Perfection
The best Byrds album we’ve heard thus far, but still a 2
Plenty of creativity on this groundbreaking album, but there are also a lot of oddities that make it hard to recommend or go back and listen to regularly. On balance, 3 out of 5.
Ahead of its time.
Monique = 4. Ben = 2. “I thought that album was absolutely death to listen to,” - Ben.
Killer, classic metal!
Ben thought 2, Monique thinks 4
Fantastic first and last song; literal filler in between.
Ben = 2, Monique = 3.9. Cliche lyrics and some Prince-knock-off sounds but the album still holds up for its time.
One of the best ever
Crazy experimental, so ahead of its time. Wow.
One of, if not THE, greatest debut albums ever.
Fascinating, compelling, emotional. Strong Nick Drake resemblance.
Some decent songs but overall pretty mediocre. 2.5.
3.5
Better than most of 1001’s 1960s folk-greensleeve throwback albums, with beautiful vocals. Would not, however, listen to this again.
Possibly the most ahead-of-its-time album on the entire list. Musically sounds like it could have been made in 2017, not 1981.
3.5. Great debut album but far from his best work. Still sounds rather ‘fresh’ for 1996!
Even though he is now the official Global Ambassador for the Carlton Football Club, we couldn’t quite make this a 5/5 even though we wanted to! It’s a solid pop album with a couple of standout songs, but sounds very much of its time. As such we’re torn but are giving it 3.5/5, rounded down to 3.
Sensational album on its own but ranking the re-issue with the addition of Born Slippy brings this up to a clear 5/5.
An absolute classic.
Very reminiscent of The Dirty Three. Beautiful, haunting melodies and the album itself doesn’t sound too dated.
Western-inspired space rock vibe.
This album is a weird attempt at a quasi-Broadway album, with vocals that sound oddly reminiscent of Neil Diamond. Not surprisingly, David Ackles was a huge influence on Elvis Costello, who for some strange reason has six albums on the 1001 list. After Ackles’ death in 1999 Costello said, "It's a mystery to me why his wonderful songs are not better known." Similar to our ratings of most Costello albums, this one gets a 2.
