Reviews (page 5 of 8)

This grew on me over the listen. Some interesting effects, anyway.

It started off interesting, but then got boring. I might come back to it when I'm reading and just want something really chill to listen to. Wasn't doing it for me today unfortunately.

doesn't stand out to me but pleasant

I'm not loving it so far, and the comparisons they use in his Spotify writeup are insane, but it's not terrible. He's more like low-rent Elliott Smith than anything else. Or like a precursor to The Shins. Stone on the Water is the best song on the album so far. Critics complained about the Rolling Stone 500 being too "American" but this list is way too British. As indie folk, this is not as good as Iron & Wine. Parts of Bewilderbeast sound vaguely like The Doors Land Ho! Blistered Heart is one of the better songs. The music is better than his singing. Epitaph is a good song to end on.

I liked this one. It was easy listening, tender, and the instrumentals were unique.

I kinda like it, a little indie slop and too long though Will I listen to again: 30%

Solid indie rock, almost a 4

I really like Damon Gough's moniker as Badly Drawn Boy, although I'm not sure I've ever heard anything by him, especially from this album. It's a pleasant enough listen, and there's a fair amount of musical variety across the hour-long album, which is always a positive in my book. I was a bit disappointed that his music seemed to be lacking a lot of depth (likely from the lack of a band, although impressive that he played many of the instruments on this self-penned, self-produced album); the highlights for me were probably "Everybody's stalking", "Another pearl" (in part due its strange clown-themed video) and "Disillusion" (also in large part for its quirky human-taxi video). (The video for "Once around the block" was amusing, but the song just wasn't all that interesting.) I'll admit that overall this isn't the most distinctive album, and given that the Wikipedia entry notes that most reviewers compared him (somewhat unfavorably) to Elliott Smith and Nick Drake, for whom we get five albums in this collection, I'm a little puzzled why this was included in the collection.

Maybe doesn't need to be quite as long as it is but there's probably 45 minutes of good, solid stuff here. Very singer-songwriter-y but at the same time richly produced with a nice mix of styles.

Really a 3.5 more good than less good songs, some real head spinners, and great lyrics - the closer in particular.

3.5 but rounding down

I like it. Not amazing though. 3 Stars

Genre: Chamber Pop An 18-track semi-slog, featuring lots of copies of 60s and 70s groups that preceded our Badly Drawn Boy: The Beatles, The Zombies, The Moody Blues, etc. It’s not a terrible record, but it’s a bit overlong, and a bit too worried about being pretty rather than being captivating. Interesting listen. 3/5

I'm unlikely to think of this album again ever

joah, konnt man hören, aber mehr auch nich

Fand Disillusion und Say it again am Ende richtig gut. Ansonsten ganz nett, nichts besonderes.

Only really knew the first song, not a bad album, some really nice moments in it, a long maybe, probably needs a second listen to appreciate it a bit more

a good indie chamberish album. of course the people on this site, who can’t think beyond the same worn-out lowbrow "classics" like the beatles and queen hate this kind of honest and sincere music

The Boy's singing is boring. At best, he's a watered down George Harrison. The music is interesting and varied at least, but nothing too exciting here.

Started promising but got kind of boring

This was a goddamn roller coaster - listen, as 2000s moody-bloke music it's decent, speaking as someone who was a moody bloke in the 2000s (I got better on both counts), so it was going to get three stars just on vibes. Then Once Around the Block comes on, and seconds in I go "oh, it's THAT song!" and have a nostalgia overload and think... does this get 5 stars for that? Then the very next song attempts to FLOSS MY BRAIN THROUGH MY EARHOLES because I'm wearing headphones, and all goodwill is gone. What do I do here? I'm not lying when I say that, if the album was just Once Around the Block and a voice memo from the band ceding the rest of their time, this would probably get five from me. As it is, i guess three will have to show my complete bafflement at this whole event

I liked it. But it's way too long, I got bored. It needed to be about 12 tracks instead of 18, cut unnecessary songs. This was not what I was expecting at all after the other songs I've heard from this artist. The piano ballad type form works well for him though.

Well crafted and I appreciate his talent. Not sure what it is but it kind of made no impact and was entirely forgettable. Maybe ill revisit this

It's not going to blow your mind away, but apparently, the Badly Drawn Boy is its own genre. I'm not sure how to classify this. It's one of those Pop-Rock-Soul-Folk albums . Favorite Track: "Epitaph".

Finally! A niche 2000s British indie album that isn't completely worthless! There's a lot of those on this list and so far this is one of the best. I can see myself revisiting this one.. Favorite track: Another Pearl

Remember when every album had to be super long? This is from that time period. Don't get me wrong, great stuff on this, but a lot of filler as well. Would have made an excellent 35-40 minute LP.

Really enjoyed this one, peaceful indie folk

It's a pretty decent, inoffensive album. But why is it in the book? It's not that influential (I presume) and isn't a fantastic album that feels like a masterpiece. It's just kinda there.

This is one of the times I really want a 3.5 rating. I liked it quite a bit, but just not enough to justify a 4. Good listen!

Niet gelukt om hem echt even met aandacht te luisteren, maar denk dat ik hem wel goed zou vinden als ik dat wél had gedaan.

Entirely inoffensive, but slightly too long for it's own good. The vocals were a little weak compared to how lush and varied all the instrumentals were. Once Around the Block is the strongest offering here. i think it should get a 3.

***An ok album

Sometimes the intense early 2000s-ness of this publication really jumps out, I've never heard anyone talk about Badly Drawn Boy. I only know a couple of his songs and expected this to be boring, but it did actually have more variety and depth of sound than I expected, while simultaneously never "wowing" me. Disillusion is pretty great at least.

Eines dieser vielen Alben von Menschen, von denen man noch nie etwas gehört hat, die etwa 2000 rauskamen. Das war aber eins der besseren, war nicht so schlimm wie ich es erwartet habe.

#591. What is the context in which people heard and/or liked this? It wasn't played on the radio. I've certainly never heard anyone mention this band even a single time in my life. How did they get to be on a list like this in the first place? It's not like the music itself is super mind blowing or anything, it's just... there. 3/5: I guess

It was fine and it was too long.

I like it. Would I say I needed to hear it before I died? No. Slightly too long

I had to ride my bike for an hour to work this morning in the pouring rain. I Put on Full rain gear and an extra sweater to be warm and left a little early so I wouldn't have to rush and get all sweaty in the waterproof cover. This album was absolutely perfect for that nearly hour long leisurely bike ride in the rain.

Out of all of the countless no-name 1997-2003 UK Indie bands this one is the most okay-est. I wish it was shorter, but it at least has a little bit originality and a unique sound. I still don't think it really deserves a spot on this list but, it isn't a bad album. Mid 3.

quite interesting but also pretty boring. it could’ve been shortened down a bit.

Nice, easy going album. 6/10

It was lovely but I don’t think it’s a need to listen. I did enjoy it on my drive though

Not bad. Didn't know what to expect, but this was fine.

Good album. Haven’t listened to it before but have heard of Badly Drawn Boy. I rather enjoyed it.

Discos del 2000: COLDPLAY- Parachutes, PJ HARVEY - Stories from the city, stories from the sea, YO LA TENGO - And then nothing turned itself inside-out, THE JAYHAWKS - Smile, EELS - Daisies of the galaxy, THE WATERBOYS - A rock in the weary land, ELLIOTT SMITH - Figure 8, RADIOHEAD-Kid A , U2-All that you can't leave behind, MADONNA-Music , QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE-Rated R , Dakota Suite- Signal Hill, Lambchop- Nixon, David Gray- White Ladder, Mojave 3- Excuses for travellers, Piano Magic -Artists´ Rifles, D'Angelo- Voodoo, Primal Scream- XTRMNTR, Goldfrapp- Felt Mountain, Death Cab for Cutie- We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, Doves- Lost Souls, Black Box Recorder- The facts of life, Calexico- Hot Rail, Ágætis Byrjun (Sigur Ros), The Sophtware Slump (Grandaddy), The Marshall Mathers (Eminem), Skantonia (Outkast), Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (Godspeed you black emperor!), Since i left you (The Avalanches), The Noise Made by People (Broadcast), The great eastern (The Delgados), The Friends of Rachel Worth (The Go-Betweens), Tourist (St. Germain), Community Music (Asian Dub Foundation), Chore of Enchantment (Giant Sand) y otro monumento en forma de triple álbum como es 69 lovesongs (The Magnetic fields). Hasta Born to Do It de Craig David o A Grand Don't Come for Free de The Streets).

For me, indie music is more on the miss side of the hit-or-miss dichotomy. But this debut album by Badly Drawn Boy was different and engaging. The Hour of Bewilderbeast wasn't pretentious or over-the-top like Coldplay and had strong instrumental sections--I loved when those horns hit. All that being said, what I'm left with is that it takes a certain kind of musician to write a song with a title like "Pissing in the Wind".

I had never heard of this album or this band, and went in pretty skeptical. It wasn't necessarily project-worthy in my opinion, but it wasn't bad either. All around, just pretty average. I will say that some interesting instrumentations kept it from being a dull album; I was at least interested.

Not a bad album, but it really didn't have much cohesion or direction for its runtime. It jumped around stylistically so much that it really didn't have much of a personality. Elliot Smith and the Microphones have a very similar feel with a more refined sound. 3/5

I appreciate the variety of songs, but also made me extremely sleepy. Need to go listen to dubstep or something to wake up now.

I liked it. Kind of slow and one note but I got it on a rainy day so I didn’t mind. I enjoyed the variety of instruments, but kind of found myself losing focus at parts.

This album was fine. I even enjoyed it. I just don't understand the inclusion on this list. In fact, I just checked, and it's already been removed. Oh well. It was a fine listen, but in no way affected my preparation for eternity. Finally, I want to remove a star for the cover, but that's just petty (so I won't).

Not heard of this before, but I like it! Mellow, but fairly interesting, a good mix of vibes, but just also very charming. Definitely some new songs to add here.

I’ve never listened to this band

This is a tricky one. It was varied enough to remain interesting all the way through but nothing really truly jumped out at me and the guys voice is not that strong. I’m balancing out to a 3.

Neither bad, neither good

Firecamp album

Always loved the first track: 'The Shining' but never heard the rest of the album before. Turns out I didn't miss anything.

A bit sleepy, but overall inoffensive. Not far from my tastes when I was in my 20s in the 00s-10s. I know I gave this guy a listen back then too, but never really gelled with me.

It’s okay. Mostly it’s kinda boring and a little twee. But he really tried to do something. He knows how to write music. And it’s all nicely made. I’m just not the target audience. It is cute, though.

I found this album to be really interesting. The artist manages to genre-hop while still creating an album that feels like one cohesive piece of art. I wouldn’t say there was anything that was spectacular, nothing ground breaking, but I’m okay with that. It’s a solid, beautifully written album that I will definitely revisit. Once Around the Block and Disillusion were both added to my liked list. It’s a high 3, not quite a 4.

Okay. Here's the thing with all of these early 2000s British indie albums that keep showing up on this list for some reason. This album here is a perfect representation of these sorts of things. Would I say that an album like this is one that you should not ever listen to? No. Not at all. While I feel more negative towards other albums of this nature, The Hour of Bewilderbeast is not what I would consider a bad album. But would I say that this album is one you should listen to before you die? Nah. If you like this sort of music, I guess I might recommend this album, but that's really the only case in which I'd do that. This album is not an essential listen in any capacity. What does this album provide that something like a Radiohead or Elliott Smith album doesn't? But what makes those artists stand out above someone like Badly Drawn Boy? (stupid project name btw) Well, I think it's the songwriting. Sure. This album has some pretty strong instrumentation, and the vocals aren't any more annoying than that of someone like Elliott Smith or Thom Yorke, which is to say that they're not annoying. However, those bands have deep songwriting that really touches the soul. I don't think this album has that. The songwriting does its job, but there really aren't any lines that stick out to me. I would say that this album just goes in one ear and out the other, but the album's too long to allow that to happen. I guess what I'd say is that this is a good album that doesn't do anything particularly poorly, but is not excellent in any capacity, nor does it really touch upon the subtler aspects of music. A real jack of the basics, master of nothing situation. It's fine, but not spectacular. 3/5.

eccentric one, Once Around the Block is neat but other than that its not my favorite, maybe interesting for its time though

Rating: 3/5 | Favorite Track: Camping Next to Water --- A couple of pretty good songs in a pretty forgettable album. I found this album to be far too long and lacked a lot of forward momentum making listening to this to be a dull experience. Overall, it's just fine.

I liked this a bit more than I expected. I never really liked the jazz pop hit but the album overall has a woozy messiness I can appreciate. However, I still think his greatest contribution to music is the time Mark E Smith from The Fall decided he was a taxi driver and forced him to drive him home. The next morning BDB found Mark's dentures on his back seat and dutifully returned them. You know people were already saying MES was unintelligible but can you imagine....

I thought this was going to be heavy metal. It wasn’t bad. It had some good grooves, but I don’t understand what makes it so special.

Reminded me of a mix of Ben Folds and Death Cab for Cutie. The musical style ranges throughout this album. I didn't listen to the lyrics but enjoyed it in the background.

Another indie project I really like , that’s def been a new development form me in this project as well Hour of bewilderbeast is experimental and messy but it works , it comes together and creates a coherent and beautiful atmosphere

I don't see what all the fuss is about. Quite pleasant, but slightly boring and I can't imagine going to see them live.

Most of the album is fine but I am begging British artists in particular to find some brevity in these types of projects

Enjoyable but not really essential

Good musics to cook to.

Pleasant

unique vibe that grows tiring pretty quickly.artistic and chill, but not enough to make it more than a 3

its a pretty decent serving of indie rock but doesnt really stand out so much to me. I had it playing in the background and didnt notice it had ended, and couldnt recall any particular song. Not bad by any means, their peers are better.

Very “Shins”y. I liked it but forgot it almost immediately

Just some indie bullshit (lots of xylophones/accordions/plucked electric guitars on some folk rock songwriting) but there are some decent tracks on here. I like the opener and the string arrangements, I like the jazzy feel of the once around the block. the lo fi acoustic/indie rock aestheics on this song, bewilder, and fall in the river. Magic in the Air has an Andrew Bird vibe to it and these lush arrangements with a beautiful piano ballad. I think I'd rather listen to Wilco for an indie rock/alt rock/singer songwriter vibe but definitely some noteworthy things on this one.

Ну это довольно неплохо. Но я ничего не помню и переслушивать это не хочу.

Actually enjoyed this more than first anticipated

Great songwriting and unique and interesting arrangements and aural landscapes. I need to spend more time with album. Love it.

3.5, need to revisit. Like the writing, arrangements, and production

This feels like the perfect sunday morning album to get, timing of the random generator really worked on that part. A nice soft and mellow folky album to listen to. Disillusion was a very nice and groovy track. The album is a bit dull and boring at times though and the runtime is a bit too long, victim of the CD era.

I have a rule of thumb that says by the time a pop musician starts using strings, they've run out of ideas and it is all over. Here we have the first track of his first album starting off with a cello... Oh. I guess there's always the "exception proves the rule" thing. Let's hope so. OK. 5 tracks in. Plenty of ideas on display so this can be "the exception". Problem is, I am not sure I like many of the ideas. The album is certainly "interesting". Lyrically good, musically entertaining at times. At other times just jarring. With a different vocalist this would be a lot better. I'm reminded of "Tubular Bells". No, not the style of music but in the sense of a new artist trying to prove "how clever" they are. This pulls it off better. I'm going to give this 3/5 which is my "OK" rating, but I have no particular desire to own it or listen to it again.

If I heard each of these songs separately I would highly enjoy them. But as a whole it became really blah and long. At times I didn't even realize we had moved on to a new song.

This was a nice listen. Super chill vibes. I like P'ing in the Wind, Disillusion and Say it Again. The variety in sound was creative and refreshing, and I'm impressed he wrote, produced, and did a lot of the instrumentation on this. Quality production overall!

I’m starting to think there really aren’t 1001 albums one needs to listen to before they die. Maybe just like 300 or so because this list has quite a bit of filler. Do I think this is filler? Yes. But did I enjoy it? For the most part. Some of the songs gave me Velvet Underground vibes, which I quite liked, and there was some weird for weird sake that I also liked. This album was definitely dull at times, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I might. Music from the 2000s on this list seems very hit or miss, and this is one of the few ones that rests nicely in the middle.

Not a fan of folk songwriters. But easy listen.

Blind album and artist. Not my cup of tea really but was interesting having a more quirky folk type album here.

I kind of liked this, it was a bit dour and sad, but not bad

Nice and easy listen, but nothing memorable 3/5

Pretty good but also kinda boring at the same time?

Just another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex Felt like an odd album, nothing seemed to happen, still I nodded along with it, then forgot about it.

Ooh is that cello? I want to believe. Mmm, nice but a bit too mellow. Ok, the second song is better. It was alright, not my cup of tea generally, but not abrasive.

There was a period of time when I feel like indie music tried too hard to be deep and beautiful, and lost a bit of what makes music fun and enjoyable. Not a bad album, but nothing about it is making me want to listen again.

Not much my type of music. Hear lots of indie and straight-ahead pop influence.

Meh vocals over okay music. Forgettable and long

Cool album and I appreciated the sound! Various instruments and piano was dope on a few tracks. Not as upbeat as I'd like but I may listen to it again.

Not unpleasant to listen to, but for me no memorable song or riff. Not a bad choice for some background music on a lazy weekend day...

Mellow vibe. Pretty calm overall sound which meant it never drew my ears fully in, but it was a nice easy listen for my work day. 3.5

Nette Texte. Insgesamt in Ordnung.

Another option for sullen, sad-sack, "nobody understands me"-type teenagers after they have worn out their Elliot Smith records.

I'm a sucker for this brand of wimpy indie music. Could definitely benefit from some editing. 20 minutes less would do a lot.

Like Fun Loving Criminals/Come Find Yourself, which was so rock-heavy at the top, this kept morphing stylisticly. I find it somewhat disorienting and counterproductive to the album format—but who really cares when the songs are good. ✅✅ Once Around the Block ✅✅✅ Cause a Rockslide

Mostly enjoyed this, nice lyrics and very melodic vocals. Uses a variety of styles without losing cohesion and he sounds a bit like Elliott Smith which I consider a plus I'd give it a 4 but it's a fair amount of filler too. Cut some of the chaff and I'd give an extra star, but I'd listen to some of these tracks again for sure

Was very surprised by this album. It was peaceful, yet really fun to listen to. Expanded the party by listening to some of their other albums afterward.

Not bad! I think I need to give it another listen and go from there, but gut says 3/5 atm

I don't know. It's so not bad. At all. Unequivocally. But then what. It's of a moment like the Electric Prices are of a moment. But do I want to go to that moment. That's really the hang up. But I really don't know.

The Hour Of Bewilderbeast is what i expected from an album that's at least 1 hour long. Basically, its an album that has it's really high highs but also has it's really low lows too. Typically, the songs were of the high variety with them often having an Elliott Smith like sound with a lot of it's strengths and as someone who likes his stuff, it's a major plus. But in some cases, there were songs that were annoying or just tried things that clearly didn't work and even some of the good songs could go off the rails when it was completely unnecessary. This is a good album but it's flaws do hold it back from greatness. Best Song: Another Pearl Worst Song: This Song

I have never heard this before and it's different from anything I've listened to. Sort of hard to describe but it's pretty chilled out and easy to listen to. A lot of nice music with a lot going on. Great to listen to while working or relaxing. I will probably listen to this again when a chill mood strikes me.

Perfectly pleasant. Is it essential? Probably not. 3/5

Based on the album cover and information provided by the challenge site and some reviews, I was expecting to loathe this album, but it’s not bad. The singing is fine and the music inoffensive. As an album being listened to during breakfast, it fit the mood. I wouldn’t go back and listen again, but it was cool checking out once.

It was okay, didn't move me but I didn't mind it while it was playing in the background

Very 90s. Not bad.

A solidly inoffensive indie rock experience

Very pleasant. I didn't know what to expect, but with the name 'Badly Drawn Boy' I imagined it was conflated with band names like 'Bad Brains' or 'Fallout Boy' or 'My Chemical Romance' or 'Bullet For My Valentine' or ... pretentious word salad. It turns out Damon Gough has a sense for intimate and earnestly sublime compositions, thankfully nothing to do with the band 'Sublime'.

Favourites Everybody's Stalking, another pearl, Bewilderbeast Disliked The Shining, cause a rockslide Lots of variety, a bit hit or miss. Overall not my thing but there were a few tracks in on the album I did quite enjoy.

Instrumentally interesting music with boring vocals that do absolutely nothing for me personally. Perhaps I would have more to say about this if I liked this genre, but this album for all its instrumental merit just made my eyes glaze over for the hour. I won’t knock the actual quality though.

Lol I mixed this up with my Regatta review, thank God I was gonma give them the same thing. Am I cooked? 6/10 Fav tracks- mother, syncronicity II, murder by numbers Least fav - none really

Meh, a bit boring TBH

Some really, really interesting instrumentation and songwriting with some of the most dull singing I've ever heard

It’s all solid and some great moments for sure, but this made me realize I like my folk music like I like my coffee - straight up and erring on the gritty side of things.

The Hour of Bewilderbeast is a full hour of bewilderbeast. It’s a bright, pretty album. When it’s good it’s very good. The opener, The Shining, Stone on the Water are fantastic. 6.0/10

Almost exactly the kind of band the three star rating exists for. I know some albums that should be on this list that didn’t make the cut that are probably better, but I’m not angry that this one is here.

It was OK. Very indy sounding.

Now, I'll admit I bought this CD back in 2000 and I loved it then, and I haven't listened to it, or anything else by him for that matter, in probably 20 years now... And what seemed earth shattering to my naive reptile smooth brain back then is kinda boring now. It's just dull turn of the millenium indie music innit? I still enjoyed songs like "The Shining", "Another Pearl", "Magic In The Air", and "Disillusion", add in a couple more and a killer EP they would make, but this was just too long and too stuffed with filler like instrumental tracks to be enjoyable as it once was. And don't get me started on the aural assault that is "This Song", do not wear headphones for that.

It’s okay. Mostly it’s kinda boring and a little twee. But he really tried to do something. He knows how to write music. And it’s all nicely made. I’m just not the target audience. It is cute, though. Bewilderbeast feels like a direct Beatles ripoff.

Um... Ok

Kinda bland

Rating: 6/10 Very artsy and overall pretty enjoyable. The use of a variety of different instruments was commendable, most of the album will end up being pretty forgettable though.

Why do some people like Marmite and hate Bovril? Who can say? I guess it's upbringing or personal taste that makes some like Rap and other hate it. Glad to say I do 'get this'. It's not awe inspiring or unique. Just pleasant and introspective.

I enjoyed this album but wasn't blown away. It reminds me of a lot of other music from around this time but it might even be a little more interesting than a lot of the indie music I listened to. There was a variety of styles and sounds which surprised me. There would be like a random bit in a completely different genre that would catch me off guard and I love that.

It's interesting how exposure to music at a young age influences your taste. I honestly didn't really hear anything in this record that shook my world or blew my mind, but I liked almost every song. And I think that's because I've spent a considerable amount of time listening to singer-songwriter indie music. Is this so much different than Wilco or Bright Eyes or even Dinosaur Jr? Its probably where you plant your flag and what you spend a lot of time with. This record was fun, it was interesting, it was even engaging. I liked almost every song. Though, I'm not sure if I'll revisit it. And that might be because it isn't too much different than a lot of music that I've spent a lot of time with. In that sense, it feels a bit generic and almost like "genre music." Though, this did have that kind of personal, self-reflective element that I feel elevates out of the "general category." I guess I'm a sucker for sad boy indie music. When are we getting some Bright Eyes??

You guessed it. It's too long dude. But pretty ok. Obscene words for thumbs up

I found it a pleasant listen. Solid indie rock, but it did come across as a bit amateur-ish

With 15 minutes cut off, this could be a brilliantly coherent album. But as it stands, it sounds like Mr. DrawnBoy got carried away with playing with toys in his bedroom while crafting this. No shame there, I do it all the time too, when I’m trying to write a defined song. Still, there’s a lot to take away from this. It’s really ahead of its time, and easy to hear how it inspired later indie giants like Arcade Fire, even if it is taking a play or two from Elliot Smith’s book.

I hear a lot of Wilco and Jeff Tweedy in here, especially in “pissing in the wind”. There also elements of Thome York and Radiohead, and Neutral Milk Hotel. Pretty good stuff.

Melancholic, excellent production, variety of instruments. I think the singing is lovely but the music tends to venture a little too broadly for its own good. Nothing to really pick apart by this album, just appears to be a lack of passion of conveyance there of. Just kind of bleh.

Disillusion and Once Around the Block are brilliant tracks in an otherwise half decent album. 3.5 stars

First song stunk, I was surprised to like it better after that

Some nice tracks here. Not a great album

It's not exactly my preferred type of music and a bit lengthy, but it's not that bad. It's easy to enjoy its first 30 minutes and forget the rest.

Not sure it really is one of the 1001 best albums ever, but it definitely captures that flipside of club culture that was the acoustic chillouter - see also Beth Orton. The three singles are great tracks, there's always something interesting going on. Cardinal sin: wayyy too long. Pick your twelve best tracks BDB. 3.5 but definitely not a four.

Some nice chill tunes but dragged on a bit in parts for me.

One tempo so far. Mellow. Very acoustic guitar driven from the onset and throughout. It’s not a standout album but it doesn’t fail other than not making me want to hear more from them. Choice cut: Another Pearl

A very gentle record with short tracks that flow together with apparent ease. In fact I’d say the interlude tracks with less traditional structure and weird little samples are much stronger than their verse-chorus-verse counterparts (Disillusioned being the major exception). The lyrics border on being too sad boi but don’t fully go over the precipice. Listened to: walking around the woods. Favorite tracks: Body Rap, This Song, Pissing in the Wind

twas ok, but nothing groundbreaking.

I don’t know if I somewhat liked this or if I didn’t like it at all.

Would've been better without the singing.

guet s löschts halt immer wieder aber da album isch z lang s het immer wieder seeehr schöni moment drin aber mer het chöne grossi abstrich mache. und die guete moment sind meistens ehner afoch no schön und nöd woooow. das is nummer drei nur deswegen.

Another album that is not particularly intersting. I also didn't particularly like his voice. However, it was an easy listen.

Much better than I anticipated. I had bought a BDB album back in the early aughts (after reading great reviews) and found it unlistenable. This one was much better, although it tailed off at the end. 3.5/5

This sounds like the soundtrack to an Indie movie circa 2003

Primer acercamiento a Badly Drown Boy. FAVTRAXS: The Shining, Camping Next to Water, Stone on the Water, Body Rap (interludio fav), Once Around the Block, Magic in the Air, Epitaph LEASTFAV: Fall in a River, Another Pearl, Cause a Rockslide 3.5/5

Some solid indie with more hit than miss imo. Would be a 4, but lost a whole star for the stereo manipulation on This Song. That honestly made me feel like my head was going to implode.

Guitar noodly and voice droney. This Song almost made me sick listening to it with headphones on holy fuck. I hated this song, but I kinda appreciate the capability to give me vertigo. Overall there were a couple times where this album flashed 4 star potential and my ears perked up, but there were also plenty of times where the songs just came and went without much of a thought. An interesting album that I have no interest in revisiting.

Pleasant album to listen to first thing in the morning. There were some cool songs for sure but then there were some really boring indie sounding songs. Would have been ok with 4 or 5 songs taken out of this. Disillusion was pretty sweet, was the highlight of the album.

Somehow I've listen to this 3 times and still not rated it.. There's a few really great songs on this and then a bunch of forgettable songs. It's a strong 3.5 but not quite 4.

It's not bad, but the whole time I thought i should just listen to Elliot Smith.

I had this CD from back when I was in college. And I probably haven't listened to it in close to 20 years. After re-listening, I remember why. There's nothing wrong here, but it's just not something I'd choose to put on as there are better examples of this style and type of music. It's perfectly pleasant, and fairly forgettable. Nothing wrong here at all, but doesn't knock anyone's socks off, either.

Another aware of the name but not the music album…lots going on which in this case is ok. Just once I’d like my preconceived notions to be right…but not today. I liked this album, I could listen again with it in the background.

Listened Before? N This record is pretty good for what it is. Surprisingly good for early 2000s English pop. The Floyd influences are front and center and it works well. I enjoyed it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: The Shining

Pretty OK.

It was alright

Great alternative rock from the 2000.

Some decent songs but a bit bloated

Badly made music

Very unique album. Not sure what to say about it. I liked it overall. It was mellow an folky. Kind of a blend of folk-pop-rock-alternative? At some points it was like listening to The Eels and some points it was like listening to Beck. Other points it was entirely its own thing.

The sort of winsomeness I'd usually hate. But surprisingly got into this a little. At its best the musicality and layering make for pleasant listening. Will I listen again? No.

Not my thang

I'm not sure about this album, it reminds me a bit like the Flaming Lips, but more of an independent band or even a one-person operation (which it seems to be). I dig the instrumentals, they seem to be a bit of a break and not too noodle-y. At first I was thinking this was a concept album, but I realize that was an error. What was the "Body Rap" track for, again? That was... a choice. "Once Around The Block" had a feel of a simpler band, but there was a lot more going on than you'd expect. Even though the title of the song is one thing, I liked "Pissing In The Wind". The sentiment was real, there. Interesting debut album. I think I have to listen to this again, and maybe more. That says something about the album, to me at least. Top tracks: "Everybody's Stalking," "Once Around The Block," "Pissing In The Wind," "Epitaph"

Hit and miss, up and down. I really liked the strings and horns to start The Shining - beautiful song overall. But the album didn't always keep up with that level. Everybody's Stalking has some edgier guitars but the vocals and the other instruments don't quite fit. Camping Next to Water and Stone on the Water were both nice pieces (the latter, again like the opener, combining some deft instrumentation). But it soon gets grating again with Body Rap (sounds like a bad version of Gorillaz) and This Song (maybe he thought he was being skillful by playing the sound back and forth across speakers/ears but it is extremely difficult to listen to). Once again the album saves itself with Bewilderbeast (real tender sound) and soon after Cause a Rockslide (nice new indie rock sound) and Pissing in the Wind (nice indie folk sound). But then he sort of lost me again and Blistered Heart and I'm not sure I loved Disillusion either (vocals? tempo? something felt out of place). Epitaph was okay as a closer. Not a bad album overall but a little inconsistent. Not sure it's such a novel revelation of folk or indie that it needed to be on this list but I didn't mind it.

Meh nothing exciting or overly interesting or distinct about this album. Not terrible, but just generic.

Initially struggled with momentum and some songs didn't quite hit, but overall a decent album. Stronger at the end.

Could feel the Magic in the Air with this one, but it ended up being more like Pissing in the Wind.

Maybe there's a gem hidden here but it takes a while to excavate and I find it straddles an awkward line between wistful indie pop and glossy britpop.

It was alright. I don’t know, it really wasn’t boring enough to get a 2, but not as memorable as most of the 3s I give. Ultimately it’s a 3.

Blandly Songed Boy.

I was hopeful that this would be the album to break me out of my 3-star (and below) slump. It’s pleasant indie with at least one track that was pretty cool/unique (“This Song”), and another that I really liked (“Stone on the Water”). However, the rest was fairly boring and left my mind as soon as it was over. I don’t think this is the one to break the pattern. C’mon, RNG! Make the next one at least 4 stars! Favorite track: Stone on the Water

Interesting so I will probably return to it in my lifetime.

Nice voice, creative songwriting, but sort of forgettable too.

A little rough around the edges. Perhaps intentionally so, but I still wanted a bit more from it. That said, I was unexpectedly committed to the listening from start to finish. It sounded like a more recent album than one that is more than 20 years old.

Good soft clean kind of gentle alt rock. A good listen but I probably won't come back to it.

I liked it more than Robert Wyatt but that's not to say I liked it all that much.

Good solid album

Some good songs, but overall kinda boring.

decent

A nice break from all the jazz albums I’ve been getting! This was good — chill and inoffensive without being dull. Pretty enjoyable and will probably listen again.

This had its moments. It’s kind of like a more lushly arranged, less serious Elliott Smith. I definitely liked some songs more than others.

J'étais absolument pas concentrée et le son était très bas mais bien je crois ? 2.5 ?

pretty good. took me a little while to get into it but nothing bad

It's fine as background music. I want to like it a bit more than I do. It goes on longer than it needed to, with a lot of similar songs.

Some good tracks, but thought i was going to enjoy it more

Yeah, it's ok. It reminds me a little bit of (but not nearly as good as) John Lennon.

Hmm. I enjoyed a lot of this, and it’s definitely an amalgam of lots of genres I do enjoy, but it’s a bit too bloated for me to absolutely adore. 3.5/5

Best song: Fall in a river Vibes: introspective white boy, proto-weezer, where the wild things are Themes: nature, love, loneliness

Very nice. Liked and would listen again, but not quite a 4.

A little off neat but far from terrible

I liked this more than I thought I would. Ended up saving 5 of the 18 which isn’t the best ratio but I still enjoyed the other songs. Rating: 3.5

Today's album is British indie rock. Some good songs in the mix, but mostly very bland. Nothing to write home about. It's one of those albums that is hard to focus on for any length of time, and is about 30 minutes too long. Some interesting stylings and techniques throughout, but just not enough to make this a strong showing for me. Favourite songs: The Shining, Disillusion (would be my favourite song except for the random last minute of the song), Bewilderbeast, Everybody's Stalking, Another Pearl, Once Around the Block Least favourite songs: This Song, Cause a Rockslide (what's with the random 1 minute break in the middle of the song to play out of tune radio?), Camping Next to Water, Fall in a River (good song, except for the needless 30 seconds of underwater noises), Epitaph 3/5

Another album that I like, but does it need to be on a list of 1001 albums I need to hear before I die? 3

A really pleasant listen though on some of the tracks the terrible drumming rather spoiled it for me as did some of the rather forced lyrics. Consequently a bit middling rather than a great album. Another of those Mercury wins that went for "a bit different" over "the best album this year". "Once around the block" is a good song, the rest a bit ephemeral.

Music is a 4 but the lyrics are forgettable, so that's a 2. Or less, really. Would have been better with no lyrics at all.

This list continues to perplex me. There's some fantastic picks on here that I agree are classics every music nerd should listen to. But then there's stuff like Badly Drawn Boy. Like a lot of other records on this list, it's not bad! In fact, I kinda dig it. But I don't think this is a must-hear record.

Halfway through and there hasnt been any song that I didnt like. Very chill and easy to listen to. Talented artist. Pissing in the wind was funny

Not something I would seek out, but I didn't turn it off.

It’s giving Beck

The songs are really long, and the whole album is pretty long. I did like the sound, and I am surprised I had never heard of this. I think it is worth a revisit in the future, but nothing that blew me away.

Remarkably mediocre. A couple tunes had enthusiasm, but most felt uninspired and unengaging. No real hook for the listener to bring them into the album either. Nothing is bad, but not much is particularly good.

and to the year 1999 we go... I remembered little except a sense of happy quirkiness, and there it is with "once around the block" ok.

It was because of Nick Hornby that I became familiar with Badly Drawn Boy. Like any ex-record shop worker, I loved Hornby’s High Fidelity (1995) so much that I became a fan & avidly read each novel, about as far as Juliet, Naked (2009). His second novel was About A Boy (1998), which became a film in 2002, with a soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy, & this was when I first heard him. I enjoyed this cd, which begins with The Shining & a string intro straight from Bowie’s version of The Merseybeats’ Sorrow. The Avalanches did a great remix of this track. Other standouts - Another Pearl, Magic In The Air, Pissing in The Wind, Say It Again & Once Around The Block, which I really like. Whatever happened to this dude?

Una sorpresa interesante

Rien de vraiment spécial, certains moments avec plus de oumpf mais c’t’assez rare

Big thumbs up for The Shining, but the rest is rather dull.

Middle of the road, modern

Good easy listening.

This was pretty cool, it included more songs than necessary, IMO, and I'd need a bit more time with the album and artist to make a firmer commitment to a rating. I'd say this is more in the 3.5 range, but I didn't love anything enough on the one listen to raise that to a 4. I heard a number of spots that were reminiscent of Elliot Smith (I honestly don't know who was on the scene first, so maybe Smith sounds like this cat), and that didn't make me like it more — not a knock on either, just a statement that it's a sound I've heard before. And more than the sound and production, the melodic structure — even without that comparison — got a bit repetitive. But now I'm nitpicking. I did like the album's title.

This was ok. I remember listening to it back in the day and being captivated by it for about a week or two before moving on and totally forgetting about it until today. It's charming, though, and the arrangements are cool. I think it's about 20 minutes too long.

This artist is brand new to me yet somehow familiar. There is a bit of Elliot Smith flair. But he stands on his own and I really enjoyed. This album inspired me to start making a playlist of 1001 artists to explore more. If you did not listen to this album with headphones, do go back and give This Song a listen with them.

It's a fine album but I can definitely see why it's been removed in more recent editions of the book. Another case of a 2000s era album that proved to not be very influential after all 3/5

Pretty ok

just been boring fr but with some pretty high highs. bro "This song" gave me a fucking headache

Weird album, half of it I enjoyed, half was either uninteresting or just weird

ok i guess

Enjoyable light indie song. Cause a Rockslide was an interesting one.

One of those singers that always sounds slightly out of tune. Still enjoyed the album a little bit.

Middling British indie - like a few others on the list! Pleasant enough, and pretty nostalgic for me, but probably not an essential for future generations.

It is ok. I'm not sure why it is revolutionary

Enjoyed the beginning of the album with a rich full sound. It wore on me as it went though

Nån typ av folk med orkestrala och lo-fi element som blir jättepoppigt ibland

There are quite a few gems here. Too long, could pick out a few songs and make an EP out of it instead. "But we have Kurt Vile at home"

I feel like this music reflects a dream like quality that can be background music for life or a movie featuring yourself. Not offensive. Rather enjoyed it but would not seek it out to listen to again.

I was kind of grumpy at this one for the first half. Familiar with it already, and it was the sort of dull English singer songwriter from the early 2000s sound I remembered. Won me over a bit by the end though, there’s some fun and different stuff in the back half. A favourite, no. But worthwhile!

Singer songwriter, multi instrumentalist. Not bad, consistent pace, pretty peaceful.

Wasn’t that into it

The Shining - 2/5, Sounds like a slow Disney monologue song that never picks up. A really interesting album. One to listen to properly, not really background music fodder. I like his quirkiness and talent on so many instruments. I prefer some of the more stripped back songs that show off his melancholy vocals and songwriting. Quite vulnerable and emotional rawness. Highlights ‘Once Around the Block’, ‘Pissing in the Wind’ and ‘Another Pearl’. A strong 3 from me. Let down by a few tracks that are just experimental fillers, and boosted by the fact that he was born in Dunstable. This makes him one of the best things to come out of Dunstable, apart from Kevin from Grand Designs. Oh, Faye Tozer from Steps. Top 3 ain’t bad for such a hot bed of talent.

Interesting instrumentation. Enjoyable but didn't completely click. 3

Simple, catchy, Brit indie-pop. Like a poor man's Paul Simon.

Lekker album voor een slow Sunday,

SpongeBob Squarepants font aside, I like this album cover; made me smile. Very early 2000s vibe which tracks as this is 1999. Liked the music but would not buy the album. It all seems to be meant as a joke, which is fine, but who wants to listen to that multiple times? Some songs just feel like sitting in a coffee shop, soft chuckle on the 4th. Mixing is a bit rough sometimes especially on the 5th track.

I enjoyed this strange tapestry of alt rock and musical mimicry. I found it intriguingly-haunting for further listens. I cannot identify one track on the album, but I can tell you how I felt throughout it.

Nice lirrul stroll down memory lane

I like this genre so I enjoyed it, but it didn't seem especially original or groundbreaking.

Another strong album killed by length. 18 tracks and over an hour is too much. If this was pared down to about 10 or 11 tunes and 40 to 45 minutes it would be a classic. I hear lots of Nick Drake in this and that's a good thing.

bonitinho

This was fine-pleasant but nothing to write home about.

Really pleasant album that I enjoyed

Un d'aquells discos dobles que hagués millorat en una edició senzilla amb menys temes. Aquí i allà, vas trobant cançons realment bones, 'Camping Next to the Water', 'Pissing in the Wind', 'Everybody's Stalkin''...

Like a more boring Neutral milk hotel. Not a bad thing.

Kind of interesting.

Nice and soothing. Someone of RateYourMusic put it well that it's music for a "cold morning drive".

4/16, 25%

There was a time I would have liked this more. But only hearing it for the first time in retrospect, it's the kind of white boy indie pop stuff that isn't very interesting anymore and didn't do it as well as others (Elliott Smith, Beulah) in the first place.

Mostly forgettable but had some nice spots, would've been better shorter. Sounds like it's from a movie you'd watch in freshman English. BT - Cause a Rockslide - Disillusion - Epitaph

Song writing wasn’t bad but definitely wasn’t anything special and neither were the instrumental performances.

Pretty cool!

Never encountered this before, I liked how it started out quite a but, though it went through an odd shift of tone and sound throughout and ended in what felt like a less interesting alt-rock vein.

This was a bit of a mixed bag. I got worried at the start that this album would annoy me, but I think it picked up as it went. When a lot of the songs started, I would be interested, then I would lose interest. It didn't always happen, but it made me sad when it did. Still, there's a few nice songs on here, and the atmosphere here is an enjoyable one. My favourite songs were Disillusion, Magic in the Air, and Epitaph.

Musically they kinda reminded me of Elliott Smith. I didn't have time to focus on lyrics so I need to go middle of the road.

This is a great debut album from the immensely talented Damon Gough. In particular I'm a huge fan of Once around the block and opening track The Shining is great also. The Mercury prize that they won is very much deserved. This is almost a 4 star album

Unsure why this is here, its bland and plenty of other bands like this but better

Really enjoy this one. 3/5

It completely knocked me off my feet. I have listened through probably twenty times already. I am excited to check out the artist more.

Very laid back, pretty music, but lacking a little oomph. First track is easily the highlight, some clever musical stuff going on around it but nothing that really draws me in much closer. A fair bit of variety, and a nice listen, but lacking something that takes it to the next level. 3/5.

Background music. Nothing to merit being on this list.

not groundbreaking but ok, first song is movie vibes

I liked it Plain and simple

For an album with 18 tracks is wasn't that bad actually.

had to skip "this song" 😬 first track was cool tho

Quite alright. Cried while listening to it, so I couldn't really concentrate. Like the vibes, kinda indie. Teen me would have loved this. + Epitaph

Like some better than others. Disillusion was pretty solid.

- Had a slow start but decent vibes - Mild jammy vibes which was cool - Not something I'd anticipate going back to a bunch, but a fun listen - Pissing in the Wind - Favorite songs: Another Pearl, Everybody's Stalking

first listen a meandering folk journey

Got some nice vibes

4 3 pretty good, loved it

Some pretty good songs here, but as an album I found it very drawn out. Not bad, not great.

Very relaxing and elegant music, just 3* because it did not really move me.

It's more varied, distinct and funnier than this American tripe we've been getting. Would like to imagine a pitt's brass band coming out for the opening track. Not totally my cup of tea (bit too twee) but the badly drawn boy's done good.

Some really cool ideas and pretty decent songs buried under trying to do weird things with pretty much every song that usually ruins a song, where a minute or two of a song is usually used up to build on the next song or just make noise. The album is also overly long, with some things repeating for seemingly no reason. I can't help but like this a little bit, but it's definitely a type of album that's been more so surpassed by internet music artists such as Jack Stauber.

No doubt about it, it's a good album. But I can't get over the fact he's a complete arsehole in real life and completely and utterly terrible life. Sorrynotsorry

2.75, OK

I was expecting some thing harder from the name of the album and the artist but was surprised with some really classical music elements. It was nice dinner making music for sure.
