Reviews (page 2 of 14)

Not as good as Pink Moon, but decent.

such a pretty folk album

Nick’s lyrical delivery is mesmerizing in Hazey Jane II. Its abrupt fluidity creates an urgency that I love. At The Chime Of a City Clock is beautiful, especially the beginning - mysterious. Fly is impressive, too. I liked it!

I'm pretty sure if you checked the dictionary definition for the word "pleasant," you'd see a photo of this album.

Enjoyed this one. Something about his music is oddly comforting. Would be good for a fall or rainy day. 4/5 Would listen again

I have loved the song “Northern Sky” for years and I was happy to see I knew that and another song on this album. It was pleasant listening, features an unexpected amount of flute.

I got Nick Drake confused with the earlier Nick Cave record and spent literally this whole listen thinking "This fuckin' guy has been around forever! 1970!?" Wasn't until I went to write this review that I clued in to the fact this is in fact, a completely different artist. Bizarre considering it sounds nothing like Nick Cave but I thought maybe that was this was before the Bad Seeds. Nick Drake and the Bad Seeds LOL. Anyways. I loved this! The orchestral elements, the flutes! So majestic and gorgeous. I hope to hear the album after this one as I recognize the art work a bit more than I did this one. Overall really enjoyed this listen, maybe even more than Nick Cave!

Really enjoyed the britfolk and the ensembles. Great album. Will listen again and put songs on playlists

Really good album, better than the other Nick Drake I’ve had. Such a wonderfully peaceful style, enjoyed it a lot. 4/5

Another great example of why I'm digging this 1001 project. I first heard Nick Drake from that Volkswagen commercial and always meant to hear more from him and never got around to checking him out. Now I'm committed to listen to his catalog. I played this a couple times this weekend and each time it was the perfect soundtrack to what I was doing. Easy, spacey, and just so nice. I'm a fan!

Such sparkling instrumentation, and such deep sadness. Another fine effort from Drake.

He was such a unique talent. His songs are of timeless beauty.

Cet album m'a au moins ouvert les yeux sur le fait que Nick Drake et Nick Cave sont deux personnes différentes. À la bonne heure.

Production: 17/20 Songwriting: 17/20 Innovation: 15/20 Bangers: 10/20 Emotional response: 17/20 =76 Awwww just lovely. Quack.

some of it really sounds like sims music (especially bryter layter). i’m so into it.

Not Nick Drake's best material and, despite the all-star cast of supporting musicians, the arrangements don't help. I much prefer the unadorned simplicity of Pink Moon. Fave track; One of These Things First The cover reminded me of the parody on Boris's 'Akuma no Uta' record, so I gave that a spin. Man, that is a really great album. Check it out!

I'm a big fan of Nick Drake's Pink Moon, so I was excited to see this one pop up. It's so close to being a great album, but the production kills it. The songwriting is fantastic. Nick's vocals and guitar are fantastic. The rest of the musicians are great - and then the strings kick in . . . on damn near every song. About half way through, I started thinking this must have been produced by someone who did all that crappy 70s country music, but at least it didn't have the horrible backing vocals. Then "Poor Boy" came on, and I literally said out loud "Oh fuck off" If someone out there has the stubs from this album, I would kill to hear it without the completely unnecessary strings and backing vocals. It could be another great one.

Listening to this album was a pleasant experience. Nick Drake has a warm whispery voice matched with beautiful instrumentation. It feels like a serene walk through a forest or along a hilltop. All of this is juxtaposed by deeply personal and troubled lyrics. There's a lot of introspection layered in the pleasantry and it creates music worth listening to again and again. 3.5 Stars

I enjoyed the jazzy/folk arrangements. Flute, saxophone, piano. Very nicely arranged, and very creative. Easy breezy vibe. Unique artistic expression. The fact that he chose two songs, including the title track, as pure instrumentals is a testament to that.

Nice. So laid back. He never sings with any energy; it’s like he’s not sure he has a good voice and so he delivers tentatively. But he does have a decent voice and the songs are pleasant. His guitar playing is good and the backup musicians are good. I’ve never heard Mr. Drake before - but I certainly might listen again.

Digg med nåke eg har hørt før. Bryter Layter (sangen) e ganske nice, resten e litt kjedelig. Kult albumcover, minne om Boris

1. intro - 1 2. hazey jane - 1 3. at the chime - 1.5 4. one of theze thingz - 2 5. hazey jane 2 - 1.5 6. bryter layter - 1 7. fly - 1 8. poor boy - 1 9. northern zky - 1.5 10. zunday - 2

It is a good album. I enjoyed quite a bit of it. Folks music though is generally not for me

Not my favorite flavor of Nick Drake, but useful from a completist perspective.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I can never remember if it's Nick Cave or Nick Drake whom I absolutely despise but it must be Cave because this is too non-descript and unmemorable to really get my dander up.

I just do not like his voice. It's a shame as the instrumentals were above average. I would prefer it if they swapped him out and replaced him with the quacking of a male duck.

I didn't really rate this, I thought a lot of Nick Cave's other stuff was better. Then I went to write this and realised it was Nick Drake, and I'm an idiot

Wonderful, Nick Drake keeps surprising. He's much more than Pink Moon

Masterpiece

This is some of the best Folk music I've ever heard! The guitar is the primary instrument, but the horns in the background just add a nice touch to it. It's really good! Definitely worth the listen!

Nicky D is the absolute man. Hauntingly beautiful, he will always have a perfect discography. RYM: Y (#295) Saved a song: N

Drake album getting 5 stars?? What are we doing? What’s going on?

Lovely. I really liked Hazey Jane II, At The Chime Of A City Clock, One Of These Things First. I had a busy day so those are the only ones I've pretty gotten through so far but will listen to more. I also learned about Tim Buckley through him. Did not know Jeff Buckley's father also did music. I recently found out he and the lead singer of Cocteau Twins were in love. SO many fascinating connections lately.

An absolute masterclass in folk music. Hearing Nick Drakes somber vocals in a more upbeat pitch with beautiful lyrics that reveals Nick's view of the world to us. Phenomenal.

Amazing album!

Probably slightly generous but it's very good

Nick Drake is one of my all time favorites. “Pink Moon,” the final album he released, is one of my personal favorite albums ever made. I own it on CD. I own it on vinyl. It’s helped me get through a lot. It’s one of the most beautiful albums ever made. But he made two other albums, and they’re also both incredible. My other favorite of his is “Bryter Layter,” which I have luckily gotten today as my album to listen to. Joe Boyd, the producer for this album, has been quoted saying that it is the only album he has produced that he wouldn’t change a thing about. It took almost two years to record and release. And it is perfect. Some standout tracks along its listing are “Hazey Jane” parts II and I, “At The Chime Of A City Clock,” “One Of These Things First,” “Poor Boy,” and the fantastic “Northern Sky.” But where did Nick Drake change from his first album here? His debut, the fantastic “Five Leaves Left,” was released when he was just 21 years old, having recently dropped out of college to pursue a music career. Unlike many others who do the same however, his debut was a vaguely psychedelic, vaguely jazzy take on the British chamber folk of the day, with nature-informed aesthetics and lush arrangements by (I believe his name is) Robert Kirby, who I believe would go on to arrange some of this album’s songs as well. That is a separate album for a separate day, but there were key growths between that album and this one. See, on “Five Leaves Left,” the lyricism was confined mostly to the internal world and thoughts of Nick Drake himself. On the contrary, many of these songs either embody a person completely other than who Drake is (“Poor Boy”), contains musings about people other than Drake (“Hazey Jane I” and “Northern Sky”), or similar musings about the world around him (“At The Chime Of A City Clock”). It also features slicker, cleaner, and more pop-oriented production than its predecessor; unlike the unquestionably chamber folk songs produced on “Five Leaves Left,” “Bryter Layter” is a folk album that is also arguably a pop or even a rock album at times, with songs such as “Hazey Jane II” erring on the side of unabashed rock, and several others being disputedly rock songs as well. It also features three instrumentals, a quick little opener, an orchestral easy listening number, and a closer. All three add this sort of atmospheric vibe to the album, especially in the strings, which feel like the night washing over you in the middle of a less crowded part of a big city. They add a surprising amount. This album’s biggest strengths, however, are its individual best songs. “Hazey Jane II,” the spiritual opener after the elegant instrumental introduction, is a folk-rock song that to this day has probably the best individual lyrics that Nick Drake ever wrote, at least in my opinion. The hurried delivery, the descriptive imagery, the chorus, and of course the last verse, ending with one of the best lines Drake ever wrote, that being “If songs were lines in a conversation / the situation would be fine.” It’s an incredible experience that takes you into Drake’s mind, and allows you to really feel his anxiety and self-awareness. The other best song on here is the spiritual closer, “Northern Sky,” the last song before the instrumental outro, “Sunday.” It’s generally considered the best song on the album by a considerable margin, and for good reason; it features an incredible, subdued vocal performance from Drake, and some of his best lyrics. It was also, notably, arranged by the one and only John Cale, the brainchild behind The Velvet Underground’s experimental kick in the first half of its original late sixties early seventies run. “Northern Sky” is not experimental at all, however, and is instead one of the most beautiful songs of the 1970s, with these really lovely glockenspiels, an outstanding piano performance, and wonderful drums. It’s a song that really benefits just as much, if not more, from the excellent production, arrangement, and recording as it does from the songwriting and vocals. This album represents spectacular growth for Drake just as much as it represents a landmark moment in music history in its own right, just for its incredibly high quality. Urban, nocturnal, introspective, and absolutely beautiful, this is one of the best albums of all time, and to me it is indeed perfect. 10/10

Made me feel happier

I love this album, i think it's slightly better than pink moon.

Nämen han är så jävla bra den här killen. Fantastisk röst, jättehärligt spelande.

Having only heard the comparatively sparse Pink Moon prior to this, I was not expecting the huge production and lush arrangements here. And what a beautiful surprise that was! There’s nothing better than discovering an overlooked (at least by myself, personally) album like this from an artist you enjoy. An easy 5, even on a first listen, and before I’d read about the dream team backing him up.

I discovered Nick Drake in the early 90s He was for me, like Jeff Buckley was for most people of my generation. I’m no Anglophile , but I love British musicians and songwriters who don’t shy away from their roots. Ray Davies is another one. I learned more about life in England from Kinks records than any Dickens novel. Drake was incredibly efficient. He released three perfect albums and met a tragic end. He had a beautiful voice, was a phenomenal guitar player and wrote amazingly deep and sorrowful songs. One of These Things First is one of my most favorite songs. 4.7 I’m bumping to 5 to upset the algorithm.

Maybe my favourite Nick Drake? If I had the option for half stars I would have rated 4.5 I think, but I still love it.

Great opening. Honestly, I discover this whole album when I was sixteen and had never stopped listening to it. Brings me hope. Perfect when walking in the city. When commuting. Soft and accompanying me. Just a brilliant record. My favourite Nick Drake album for sure. "I could have been sailor I could have been a cook." Relatable...

another album and creator ive been loving for years now! still slaps

Very sad and pretty. Not his best but still better than most

My least favorite Nick Drake album, but come on this is a 5. One of my top 5 artists all time.

Majestic

i definitely like pink moon and fives leaves left more but man. it's nick drake.

Sad and lovely

Probably his most possitive sounding album

Possibly tied with Jeff Buckley for most potential that we didn’t get to see :(

Nick Drake First Listen: Despite Hazey Jane II's upbeat instrumental, the vocals feel very understated. The horns the track ATCOACC instantly draws the listener in with dark guitars, deep bass, and subtle drums. The strings and sax build the song beautifully. I think it's easy to miss the background that is the acoustic, but it's played very expressively at parts. The piano in One Of These First winds it's way through the track. The guitar, drums, and even the vocals are almost a wallpaper for the piano to paint. That being said, I love Nick's vocals. They're extremely understated - similar to Sufjan Stevens he almost never goes into chest voice. They feel earnest and sad. The strings on Hazey Jane I play a similar role to the piano on the previous track. The dance around the stage set by the other elements. I love the winding nature of these tracks; while some do crescendo into something greater, I'm more than happy to let them carry along as they are. I was hoping for an explanation on the album title but all I got was a really pretty flute solo. I didn't have too many song specific notes for the last stretch of the album, it's an album that's easy to let wash over you. I'm excited to go back in and try to focus on Nick's songwriting. OVERALL: This album is gorgeous. It's creates spaces for stories to be told, whether by Nick himself, or the various instruments across the tracklist. Nick's voice is soft, rarely pushing past his head voice, but it commands a a demand to be heard. I love this album! 9.5/10 T3: ATCOTCC, Poor Boy, Northern Skies

I think this is my favorite of the 3 Nick Drake albums. Very upbeat for Nick. His hair playing is advanced and a lot harder to play than it sounds. Hazey Jane II starts it out right. The backing vocals and sax solo in Poor Boy is a highlight. Just an excellent album and one I'll revisit. No skip tracks.

Enjoyed this!

Nick Drake was one of those artists that just really left such a mark on the world. His artistic voice is so unique and this album really stands out as one that couldn’t have been written by anyone else. He had his own sound and this list is proving to me how truly difficult that is to do.

Such a great record. Blows you away right off the rip with Hazey Jane II. Just phenomenal guitar playing and song writing top to bottom.

this album is beautiful through and through. of his tragically brief catalogue, Bryter Layter contains the catchiest songs, the ones with melodies and arrangements that stick in your head. even with an undercurrent of melancholy, many of these songs are still uplifting. Nick Drake proves his expert guitar playing, surrounded by jazzy horn & string arrangements, brisk drums, the occasional female backing vocals. his voice also sounds confident here, as it well should! around each corner, another reason to smile and appreciate what Nick Drake shared with the rest of us.

Fantastic. I'll take all this you have.

I find myself using the word "sublime" too often in these little write ups, and I suppose I shouldn't overdo it, but this album fits the bill, dammit. To weave together these sounds; folk, jazz, a little gospel, with such clairty and subtlety is real music. Drake's voice, both literal and figurative, sings from every note in his dreamy upper range. This is a great album. 5/5

Incredible artist and album. A rusty voice matched with incredible guitar and piano, along with all the other accompaniments, is just ::chef’s kiss:: Nick Drake is the precursor to musicians like Jack Johnson, John Mayer, or Pete Yorn. His poetic lyrics are hopeful and tragic his raspy voice brings everything to life and keeps the tone steady without over staying its welcome. And the composition in this album, while dated for sure, holds up well and translates to the modern day better than many 70s albums.

Ultimate légende

Amazing

Music for napping in a flower. Fav song: one of these things first

idk how I had not listened to Nick Drake until now, this is very much my shit Weasel mentioned!!!!!!!!!!!!! Favourite song: One Of These Things First, Sunday

Just some beautiful beautiful folk music. Nick Drake has such a tender voice that makes these songs just float along, and the backing band is absolutely wonderful. Amazing album.

The most baroque of Drake's trilogy of albums; you might think that would make it the brightest (brytest?) of the three, and purely sonically you'd be right, as Drake makes good use of the ersatz wall of sound available to him (particularly Robert Kirby's orchestral arrangements). But on another level this is the saddest stuff Drake ever made, because it represents his fullest attempt to connect with the social world, and that attempt ultimately failed. His trepidation is all over the lyric sheet - forests full of predators, cities full of blank faces, missed opportunities both romantic and just simply human. Even the ecstasy of "Northern Sky" codes as tragic now, with the knowledge that the romance it conjures was always a figment of Drake's imagination. Breaks my heart every time.

Yes! Pink moon is one of my favorite albums of all time and I love every single track. I’ve heard from this album and all of Drake‘s work. For some reason, I’ve never listened to this straight through, I think I was just waiting for the right moment. Even just after the introduction, I am in love. Jazzier and more lush than Pink Moon. I love it nearly as much!

Nick Drake – Bryter Layter (1971) On Day 135, I moved into a more levitating space with a 70s folk classic. This is a truly decent LP that earns a full 5/5. It’s got a slick production that feels more "conscious" and arranged than a standard acoustic record. The standout tracks were definitely "Hazey Jane II," "At the Chime of a City Clock," "Poor Boy," and "One of These Things First." The title track also set a blessed tone for the whole experience. It’s a triumphant project that manages to be sweet and noir all at once, proving that Nick Drake was truly in a league of his own.

Thank you for reminding me about Nick Drake!

Love it

Wow, this was beautiful. I love every second of this album. Love all the different instruments and his voice. Favorite track(s) Hazey Jane II At The Chime Of A City Clock Northern Sky

From the ridiculous (the previous album) to the sublime. 5 stars. I'd been hearing about Nick Drake for quite a while (in the 80s and 90s), but didn't actually discover his music, I think, until maybe around when you guys were little (early 2000s), when I started getting his CDs from the library occasionally (as I still do), and discovering how good they are. So amazing. I listened to this 3 times through today, and enjoyed it just as much, each time. Just learned from Wikipedia that, on this one, he had some help from some of the members of Fairport Convention (a group I've long liked, which included Richard Thompson - guitar on track 2 - who went on to success on his own, as well), as well as John Cale, a founding member of the Velvet Underground (and violist!).

It’s good. The intro was nice. I had high hopes. The rest was not disappointing but not too satisfying either. Thinking about a very low ball 5 because I can’t think of how this album can be potentially any better.

Super Dope

Peakness

Absolutely stunning album. An easy 5 star review from me. The acoustic guitar, bass and string arrangements are beautifully arranged into an emotive, well-balanced album that flows brilliant from start to finish. No notes, just brilliant song-writing, lyricism & delivery across every single track. It’s definitely more “produced” than his other albums but that doesn’t matter when it’s so great to listen to.

This is wonderful from start to finish. People who give this 1 star must be fully dead on the inside.

I really love this album. Over the past year, I gradually became more fascinated with the songs and its production. It feels very magical and mystical at times, sometimes very melancholy and serious, and at others it feels very jaunty and light. Nick Drake’s voice across all of his albums is just so warm and uplifting, and it just binds the record together as a whole. The album’s a very full experience and a delight to listen to.

Honestly one of the most incredible albums I’ve ever heard. I adore Nick Drake and all musical choices he makes. The contrast between songs in this as well as the instrumental complexity throughout. It is one of the only albums I could call folk jazz which is a bizarre combination but works very well in many songs on this album. I could listen to this forever.

Yasssss

Here we go here we go! Finally an album I know well. Not just knowing the artist is out there, not listening to some of their other work, not knowing one or two of the big hits and getting to hear the rest of the album for the first time, an album I know back to front already, and with damn good reason. Nick Drake is in the class of the most phenomenal musicians. While not as sombre as his poignant later work (looking at you, Pink Moon), this album does a fantastic job of setting tone with such a small but masterfully utilised and manipulated instruments. Nick's voice, in the same way as equally fantastic guitarist Mark Knopfler, is not what any of us, now or then, would consider a mainstream musician's voice, indeed like Dire Straits Nick talks more than he speaks. But by god does he make it work. The words and the music combine so perfectly. This might be the first album I would genuinely consider being a requirement before the mortal coil is hopped. I've found other good albums and songs through this activity, but Bryter Layter really lives up to the task in a way the vast bulk cannot. At The Chime Of A City Clock and One Of These Things First will likely be two very high-ranking songs for the rest of my life, and there isn't a true dud on the album. Beyond my capacity to fault.

Fantastic surprise this

larga vida al folk, mi gran amigo de inviernos y donde puedo refugiarme.

Beautiful and haunting. One of my favourite albums of all time. Timeless.

This is an album I’ll remember forever. Listened to it multiple times in one day.

Super album, j'ai adoré l'ambiance !

I can't even explain my love for Nick Drake. I've always felt that his face on this cover is the face that I probably make most days, without even realising. I've always felt... that I am Nick Drake... like I am Charlie Kirk. But... I am Nick Drake, yeah.

Backed by lush strings, this is as hopeful as Nick Drake ever sounded. This is a lot more busy than the other two albums released by Drake. Drake wanted to have a record that had instrumentation similar to Pet Sounds and even hired session musicians from that album to help realise his vision. The instrumental compositions 'Introduction', 'Bryter Layter' and 'Sunday' are gorgeous and I could see Nick making more of this style of music if his life wasn't cut so tragically short. We get a bossa-nova flavor on 'Poor Boy'. 'Fly' is one of my favourite songs from him and it his most positive too due to how he yearns at the listener. I can't quite put it into words, but Drake's voice is so comforting and it will soothe your soul. This might be my least favourite album made by Drake within his lifetime, but it is still a classic and one of my favourite folk records.

Finishing up the Nick Drake trilogy out of order with his second album. This one is more polished than the other two and, like the album title says, it’s “brighter”. Drake had a wild talent for turning melancholy themes and lyrics into something colorful and beautiful. The melodies and arrangements are insanely pretty, and his vocals are by far the best on this album; this might be my favorite of the three albums. Another masterpiece from Nick Drake will make it to the top of the mountain and be my 16th 5/5.

Ayy, finally some peak music

Nick Drake makes me think of that Dr. Who episode where Van Gogh got to come to the future and see how much everyone loves his art. Nick should've had that, too.

Oh FUCK yeah. Yes please. Oh god is good. I needed this. Praise be. This is a palate cleanser after all the slop I've been gargling through this website. Lemme put a pin in this magic rq and start anew. Ok I'm ready for this experience. I love folk oh my god. This is so good so far. And only 40 minutes praise be. And his voice is good. Oh god. This was chemically engineered for me exactly right now. What will happen Drake. I literally could've been a clock bro. Like you don't even get it. Oh boy. I could've been your fucking pillar. I could've been your door. I really really like this. It's refreshing. It's a watery bright spring morning that's still a little nippy and dewdropped but the birds are back and chirping and the flowers are blooming. This is kinda making me emotional after hearing his story I wish he knew how appreciated his music is now. Wow. Big fan Mr. Drake. Edit from later Hazey Jane I is a masterpiece of modern music. Favourite: One Of These Things First Least favourite: Fly

Pink Moon is a regular for me. I should really listen to Nick Drakes 2 other albums more because they’re equally brilliant. Three 5-star albums by the age of 23. What a legacy from such a tragically short life.

Nick Drake was a legend whose lyrics, vocals and guitar style invited you into his most innermost thoughts and emotions. Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon were also masterpieces! A legend gone way too soon….

top 3 - Hazy Jane II, Northern Sky, Sunday. Beautiful!! Very comforting as well, makes me want to sit outside in the rain :D

Really liked it.

nick drake goes electric. it definitely has a more upbeat feel than the others. pretty sure i heard a few of these first from wes anderson films and the garden state soundtrack.

Loved the sound

Buen disco, chill de cojones, fantástico.

one of my favourites

Beautiful album. Melancholic and sad but not overly so, soulful singing and playing. Loved it.

Beautiful album with lots of good stuff going on. I liked how the different instruments worked together with the singing. The atmosphere of the album was also top notch. Close call if I'd rate this 4 or 5. But I genuinly enjoyed this one and would happily tip my friend of this album so lets go with 5.

es un estilo de musica que roza lo convencional, pero la comunicación con la voz es una locura, esa convención pasa a ser un viaje sonoro muy difícil de lograr. Este álbum habla por si solo y es una joyita histórica que nadie debería perderse

Favourite track: poor boy

That was a great album. Loved it. 5. Hazey Jane II, One Of These Things First and Fly through to Northern Sky all excellent.

Back to Bsck tortured folk souls... This one definately has the edge though, maybe close to the apex of British folk, just enough whimsy. For some reason never gave his other albums More than a cursory listen, so looking forward to those coming up.

A staple of naughties listening for me. Not revisited in some time, but thoroughly enjoyed throughout. Found common ground with the Mrs which is always a bonus.

Didn't listen to it. Probably sucked anyhow.

The last Nick Drake album for me to listen to, is perhaps my favourite? Fits somewhere perfectly in the middle of his debut's more grand compositions and "Pink Moon's" loneliness. No bad tracks on this, really enjoyed listening to it and will definitely revisit.

i loved this so so much, it's like a warm blanket on a cold day. absolutely beautiful album, almost cried listening to be honest.

this album could make me cry. northern sky is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. perfect <3

The common ding against this album is that it is over-produced but no it's actually not. The only choice I don't like is the gospel choir on 'Poor Boy.' Everything else is basically perfect. I love how the melody in 'Hazey Jane II' sounds like a melodic line that would start a horn solo in a jazz song. This was produced by the guy who did a bunch of Fairport Convention and Richard & Linda Thompson albums (and Five Leaves Left) and it sounds pretty immaculate. (He also produced Fables of the Reconstruction!) 'Fly' makes me die.

Superb

My favorite Nick Drake album. It has all the ingredients of his other two albums with an additional touch of jazzy lightness.

Lovely

Cool find

This is a different kind of Nick Drake. He is best known today for the stripped down melancholy of his vocal and a guitar alone, as heard in "Pink Moon". Here the music is larger and fuller, aided by members of The Fairport Convention, session musicians from The Beach Boys, and John Cale, among others. You can easily imagine a version of this album without any of that. Nick Drake's style really didn't require a backing band and I can understand why he was unhappy with it. In a way, it even feels like a label just overdubbed some unnecessary extra music on top of existing tracks. But the thing is, it works and gives us a new dimension to what Nick Drake could sound like. With or without other bandmembers, the music is great. So why not have some variety?

Needless to say, a fucking masterpiece and legendary record. Pure perfection from start to finish.

amazing

Poor boy is so far my fav track

Este muchacho tiene unos discos gloriosos. Creo que me alegro de haberlo descubierto tarde en la vida. Antes no habría apreciado su nivel musical y también es bueno dejarse alguna sorpresa agradable para la edad adulta...

i've heard this hundreds of times over the years, and it's never gotten old. it's not my fav of his releases (that goes to Pink Moon) but this is still essential listening like the rest of his discography Introduction - no rating Hazey Jane II - 5/5 At the Chime of a City Clock - 5/5 One of These Things First - 5/5 Hazey Jane I - 4/5 Bryter Layter - 4/5 Fly - 4/5 Poor Boy - 4/5 Northern Sky - 5/5 Sunday - 4/5 Average score: 4.4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ this would technically be a 4.5 star album, but i love it so much that i can't rate it lower than a 5 here. considering i listen to this almost every night, i think this is a well-deserved score

Надо послушать другие альбомы

I had already listened to Pink Moon (1972) and thought it was excellent, though very sad. The suffering in the songs feels almost palpable, and today we know there were many signs that something very dark would eventually happen to him. With that in mind, Bryter Layter by Nick Drake was a very pleasant surprise for me. The album is light, extremely beautiful, and he has a gorgeous voice. Even if I had hated the album, which I didn’t, the experience would already have been worth it just for the opening track, Introduction, which has one of the most beautiful instrumentals I have ever heard in my life. Other highlights for me were Bryter Layter, Fly, and Northern Sky. With all that said, I give the album five stars, because there is simply no other possible rating. Nick Drake was brilliant. ✨

Good vibes.

By no means a perfect album but nick drake makes music that no one else can

brilliant

This is the first review I have edited (outside of errors), and hopefully the last one I will as well. I really should have given this one a 5 when it came up, and maybe because it hasn’t been long since it did I feel obliged to rectify my mistake. Anyway, Bryter layter is a lush, smooth album; the very best from Nick Drake and one the best on this list.

The most opulent Nick ever got...and god is it gorgeous.

Love the violins and classical guitar and just the whole serene ambiance of the album.

Yaaaaaaasssssss

Yeah a low 5 for me, he has no misses album-wise but this is his only record where I can take or leave a couple of the tracks (Fly and Poor Boy), the highlights are some of his absolute best though and I really appreciate hearing a groovier, more upbeat take on his gently melancholic and deeply moving songwriting, the accompaniments here are generally excellent too

Obrigado. 5/5

love this sound and style. Big fan of the Drake

Feb 10, 2026 - oh this was beautiful

Music is timeless. I know it because of Nick Drake.

i just seem to connect deeply with really depressed people and their music

#264/1001. Another long time favourite - although Nick Drake without backing musicians in Pink Moon perhaps excels this - the beauty of his songs are in their simplistic execution, guitar and voice alone are enough. However, arrangements here are wonderfully arranged and executed. Nick Drake's vision is unique, as far as I understood his strive for perfection and lack of respect caused heavy mental issues (depression / schizophrenia) and "unbelievable amount if cannabis" (as his friends stated) use probably didn't help. But his unique vision of life and personality gave us three musical gems (amd quite a lot of bootlegs) - their immortality perhaps helped with the classic tale of the suffering artist genius - or perhaps just by the fact that there was nothing like that. (I don't know if there would be likes of Sufjan Stevens or Iron Wine without him). Poor Nick didn't even make it to the 27 club.

Classic Drake!!!

day 1 feb 4 , great vibes leads to great recs love it it was very fluid and calm i could focus

Excellent stuff. Sad though.

I was only familiar with Pink Moon but this is a beautiful album too. I think I prefer it, actually. The whole thing is very mature and interesting. Will warrant multiple listens.

Almost perfect. Apart from the sax

Based on everything else in this genre we’ve had to endure, you’d think I’d give this another 1 or 2 stars…imagine my surprise as I enjoyed this entire album thoroughly. This proves that I’m not bias against this genre inherently…it just usually sucks ass. I thought this was incredible & sweeping & beautiful & bittersweet. Really incredible album. Listened to it three times. Probably the most an album has had to earn 5 stars, uphill battle.

the sound of summer - glorious, with great melodies, delicious arrangements, and sly humour on poor boy. the whole thing is driven by that precise, melodic acoustic guitar

Beautiful voice

Nick drake made a perfect album with two instruments, his voice and his guitar on Pink Moon, and here he made a perfect album with every instrument they had in the studio that day. What a fabulous songwriter no matter what situation.

A simply charming album. It carries a soft tone, with melodic instrumentation and a splendid voice.

Love this album! It’s a journey from Start to finish, cohesive themes and a cool blend of jazz and folk sounds. So whimsical

I freaking loved this

Loved it. I only knew Pink Moon and thought Drake was a slightly overrated singer songwriter. This album was rich and varied

The original soft voice hero at his apex.

I first heard of Nick Drake at university when I was listening, bizarrely, to a BBC R4 programme by Brad Pitt on how much he liked Nick Drake’s music. I’ve been a fan ever since and have all his albums. His guitar playing is outstanding and his voice is wonderful. His second album is more polished and I suppose more bombastic and less folksy than his first, but each is a delight in their own ways. Sad that he passed away so young

(I just wanted to preface that this rating is being written as I'm actively listening to the album, so there may be typos and this won't be a detailed review, it may even be incomplete if I happen to lose myself in the music.) This was such a great start to the challenge. I was blown away by Introduction, incredible strings. It's very rich and indulgent.. Hazey Jane 2 is a great head bopper, it has the sort of rhythm that just sticks in your head. The brass is apologetically present throughout and the blending of all the different instruments is immaculate. At the Chime of a City Clock has this sense of melancholy which almost immediately brings you down from the high of Hazey Jane. One of These Things First, I appreciate the rolling constant piano motif, the want to be greater than oneself is a feeling that can be all consuming, just like the motif is the dominating layer of this song. Hazey Jane 1 is freeing, the strings soaring over an energetic yet grounded bass. It's like a bird finally leaving the nest. No comment on Bryter Layter, this is simply splendid. Fly just fills you with this sense of nostalgia. Poor Boy is jazzy and melancholic, gorgeous backing vocals, the narrator is steeped in misery, feeling overlooked by the world, without a purpose except to feel pity for himself. Beautiful saxophone part, there's so much soul. Wonderful piano solo. Dissonance in this song is used expertly, elevating the song (especially when nearing the end). Northern Sky is bright, it's hopeful and expansive. There's this mysticism and magical feel added by what I believe is synth, it reflects the feeling of being in love so beautifully. Sunday, solemn and calm, day of rest. The name is fitting for a final song. Everything has come full circle here. The way the things swell and then pull back like the tide. Do not mistake calm for boring however, this song is a wonderful summary of an album that experiments musically and explores such a vast range of emotions.

Perfect

always a great album with some really good, classic songs. need this on vinyl!

lovely

Stellar 5 - a near-perfect album

Sad loss. So talented.

I would let nick do nasty nasty things to me. Perfect music for knitting my boyfriend a sweater.

Absolutny bangier

This makes number three from Nick Drake for me on this list, which is sad because that's all his albums and I won't get any more. This guys was an absolute genius. Such a sad life, one thing that always strikes me about his music is that you can hear him struggling throughout the entirety of each of his albums. Pink Moon is really his best and the one that I connect to the most. I feel like Nick Drake, and this album in particular, are everything that Bob Dylan wishes he could be. This is extremely well written, well performed, well sung. Instrumentation is fantastic. The emotion behind this albums is everything you can want from this type of music. It's sad, sort of hopeful, melancholy and beautiful all in the best way. It's such a shame we only ever got three records from Nick Drake. 5/5

Feels intimate and quaint, the backing vocals in poor boy I’ve been singing all day since I’ve heard the song. Hazy Jane II makes me feel like a dancing following the most beautiful wedding. Got to learn a little bit about Nick Drake in the process I wasn’t aware of how tragic their story was.

Perfection.

Excelente álbum

Amazing

The GOAT.

Big fan of the vibe - lowk matched perfectly to the early modern history revision i was doing. Lived for the random flutes.

Masterpiece. Good music for sitting on a train and looking out of the window. Nike Drake is amazing and i love him. I still dont think its on the same level as pink floyd. i think pink floyd is on the same level as beatles and so i will use them as a comparison. still, i listen to this album in my own time. his music is amazing for quiet moments to yourself. beautiful and emotion evoking

Fairport convention featured!!! I love this album so much.

Hazey Jane II - 4.5/5 At The Chime Of A City Clock - 4/5 One Of These Things First - 4/5 Hazey Jane I - 4/5 Bryter Layter - 3.5/5 Fly - 3.5/5 Poor Boy - 3.5/5 Northern Sky - 4/5 Sunday - 3.5/5 I had never heard of this guy before today, but I came out loving this album. The instrumentation is soft and smooth and the first side of the album captured me in. Overall: 4.5/5 Favorites: Hazey Jane I & II, At The Chime Of A City Clock, One Of These Things First, Northern Sky

Super surprise Chanson de Garden State dedans

WOW, amazing album. Some seriously awesome reflective songs in here that really get you thinking with excellent instrumentals to boot. Great jazz throughout the entire album as well! Will repeat in the future!

I loved this album, much better than I expected. Nick Drake finds a consistent tone throughout. Psychedelic mellow folk pop that floats through your mind. A great listen when you're in the right mood.

Despite it being a sad album, it makes my chest swell in a warm way. Really beautiful melodies and his voice is just so soothing

Mt bom

I love Nick Drake and Bryter Layter is my favourite of his albums. For me it’s the perfect Sunday morning album. Side one is just the most beautiful and sublime of any album. We are lucky to live in the area that his sister Gabrielle and the Nick Drake foundation are based, and have become friends of theirs. Nick Drake’s will continue to live on and inspire both listeners and musicians alike.

Very musical, very creative. Daring, but catchy. Love this! I could do with a little less orchestra sometimes. But overall very well produced.

Perfect quiet morning vibes. Lovely arrangements and instrumentals. Hazey Jane I and II are standout songs, as well as At the Chime of a City Clock and Northern Sky are beautiful and evocative.

Nick Drake hits again. Every time I listen to this, I'm amazed by how good it is

Fire I love the sound of this album , I’m a sucker for acoustic guitar. The intro is so calming . Added to the vault fs.

Legit forgot how beautiful it is

Felt as he was reciting poetry. Sometimes happy, other times with a nostalgic vibe. Sometimes mysterious, other times whimsical. The album ends in a positive way

Excellent - had only heard two of these songs but they are all really intricate and so well crafted.

My favourite Nick Drake record, a masterpiece.

It was good. I like the folk sound.

Is this a Christmas adjacent album??? Sure! First time listening to Nick Drake, absolutely blown away by this. The incredible guitar work, the lush baroque arrangements, it all just comes together brilliantly. This has gotta be my first 5/5. Not a single bad song on it.

*1. introduction - the guitar in this is really nice. liking the orchestral touch as well, works really well with the folksier style of the guitar. very sweet song :) 2. hazey jane ii - already vaguely know and like this song. immediately a nice bassline. liking the horns as well. really nice lyrics. instrumental part about halfway through is great. very belle and sebastian.... *3. at the chime of a city clock - the bass in this album is really great :) violins just started, really loving this. i've only ever properly listened to a few songs off of pink moon and wasn't expecting the range of instruments/production on this album, which for me is a welcome surprise. saxaphone(?) is really great as well. lyrics are great in this one, loving how the violins kick in at the chorus. 4. one of these things first - guitar intro is realllly nice. chord changes make it more melancholy. piano is nice as well. these songs sound bittersweet. 5. hazey jane i - the instrumentation is so nice throughout this album, i don't have much else to say besides how incredibly beautiful it sounds lol. the lyrics are also immense throughout, amazingly bittersweet. bass and strings are great as ever, especially at the end. *6. bryter later - had to have a break bc i had a headache, but am very excited to be back!!!!!! flute and strings together is perfect. 7. fly - immediately loving the strings in this one. really beautiful lyrics again. again, not much to say, the music speaks for himself. 8. poor boy - very jazzy, liking this one :) backing vocals are great. saxaphone is back!!!! *9. northern sky - right away, giving a very mellow vibe. really sentimental and sweet :) piano about halfway through is actually killing me, reallllly lovely. 10. sunday - loved this album so far, hasn't dragged at all. loving the flute and bass in this one. strings just started, reaaallly nice :) strings and bass changed up about halfway through, so so so beautiful. fantastic instrumentation. heard a few nick drake songs and have been meaning to listen to an album of his for a while, but never got round to it until now. really loved this one, said earlier i wasn't expecting the instrumentation, the strings reminded me more of music like scott walker's than the folk i was expecting. been reading other reviews saying it sounds overproduced and i feel this is another death of a ladies man situation (a predominantly acoustic singer-songwriter puts out a more produced album), but i love both these albums so i don't care :) will definitely be listening to all of these songs on repeat for a while.

Classic album

NICK FUCKIN DRAKE the original tortured poet - Hannah

Wow. This is like a darker, more somber version of James Taylor. His guitar work is amazing. "At the Chime of a City Clock" almost painted a picture of him being in the city waiting for things to happen. I really enjoyed this, and I hope there are more of his albums in the list. My Rating; 5/5 shoes

Gorgeous guitar, soft beautiful vocals, peak 70’s

If I hadn't done this project I never would have realised there are people in the world who don't like Nick Drake

Utterly beautiful throughout, never get tired of it!

Desperately need to catch up, don't need a Nick Drake relisten to know I love this man so unbelievably deeply. Great album cover too

The best of the few albums he left us with. His ethereal voice bring a beauty to these songs that few can match. Tracks like 'City Clock', 'One Of These Things First' and 'Northern Sky' are just superb beyond belief. I can only give this one a 5. and yes I do already own it.

I've slept on Nick Drake, but this record is phenomenal. Maybe my reckoning with it is biases by a spate of gloomy weather, but it's still a five for me.

love love love love love it!

I first listened to this when I borrowed the CD from the library. This was even better than I remembered. It is a truly beautiful album.

Easy listening, good vibes

Great, baroque folk/pop music. I personally have purposefully (for some reason) held off listening to Nick Drake. Still on the fence around his vocals, not personally a fan, I find them too contrived and affected. The music is fantastic, great songwriting. I hear the influence in 90s bands such as Belle and Sebastian, et al. Great album.

I might buy this

Cloudy Sunday afternoon.

Mr Drake gets better each time I listen to his exquisite music.

NICK DRAKE IS GOD. FROM DE 1ST ALBUM

That was absolutely delightful. I listened to it probably four times that day while working instead of listening to my audiobooks, and then I put it on when my girlfriend and I went to bed that night and we made out for the entire album.

You can trace a thruline from Nick Drake to Joanna Newsom

I really like him. A five is maybe a bit high, but what can you do

Lovely stuff, I’ve never heard all of this before. Excellent. Vince Guaraldi vibes - sign me up

So lovely

Def coming back to it, very nice morning & breakfast album

Doesn't get much better than this. One of my fave albums.

This is one of those albums and artists that you wished you had heard a hell of a lot sooner than the day you laid ears on it. His entire discography, as short as it is, does not disappoint. Run, don’t walk.

I love this album and Nick Drake. I’m so glad I discovered this album this year as it’s an amazing folk record with beautiful guitar playing and lyricism

Det här är varför jag lyssnar på varje album på listan. För att hitta otroliga album som denna. Stråkarren är det klart bästa men hans röst och texter är magnifika. Tårar i ögonen i 40 minuter, this one hit me

I'm finding that I really like the folksy albums this generator is giving me. Not something I ever would have found on my own, but I loved this one!

A really nice well written and well played album

This is a perfect album

I really liked this album, it sounds really pretty, like a chill backdrop for some kind of indie game

INCRÍVEL

this is exactly what i needed. i love poor boy so much. never heard of nick drake til now but this was great and i will be listening to more. haunting and romantic and delicious to my ears 10/28 i rated this album a 4 but im coming back to give it a 5 idc. i was trying to be careful with 5 stars but i loved every song on this album

Wonderful stuff

Downloaded to listen to again. Perfect fall/winter vibes. Nick Drake's music was so groundbreaking and is now so timeless. I am so glad this album was on here!

This is truely beautiful music and makes me cry. What a song is Hazy Jane 1. I have a lot of love for Nick Drake.

Pink moon's a little better, but I think this is more fun to casually listen to. Richer instrumentation here if memory serves.

Super album, possibly my favourite by Nick Drake. Not a bad song on it.

Cozy listening for a cold, autumn Sunday morning.

Having long been a fan of One of These Things First, I'm surprised I never sought this album out. Loved, the beautiful guitar and piano melodies carried me along and for once I wish I was actually disappointed when it ended

I love Nick Drake. I don't think this is my favourite album of his but it's still solid 5 for me.

A masterpiece I will never tire of. Especially on warm, sunny afternoons.

He had such a mellow voice. Another fellow that should have had a full long successful life. RIP

Timeless perfection, infinite stars

I had never heard of Nick Drake before listening to this. I was very ready to be bored by early 70's folk music, and instead found myself absolutely mesmerised by an incredible singer-songwriter. Bryter Layter is a beautifully arranged folk masterpiece, and I cannot wait to hear more from Nick Drake. I get the feeling this is an artist I will gel with strongly.

i miss nick drake :( there are SO many great songs on here and his vocals are as gorgeous as ever ill never get tired of them

HAZEY JANE 2 I LOVE YOU FOREVER !!!!!

Really chill album, enjoyed a lot

Absolutely stunning. Everything Nick Drake is pretty much flawless for me, although I will admit to going to his other two releases before Bryter Layter. Regardless, Drake was some sort of genius - it's unfortunate we got so little from him.

All 3 Nick Drake albums are unique but all 5s in my view. I love the mix of folk and jazz and vocals are perfect. Easy 5 star.

Yes, Nick Drake, pull up a chair and take off your shoes. We're gonna be here a while. Nick Drake, my beloved. I've been waiting for this album for ages. Unappreciated in his time, Drake created a treasure trove of music in his short life. Bryter Layter is similar to his first album, Five Leaves Left, but is brighter--at times. As someone who does not like folk music, I love Drake's music. Make no mistake: this is folk music while feeling so accessible with the small jazz touches. The strings and horns are implemented perfectly. The instrumentals are just beautiful; they're evocative without words. The flute in "Sunday" does more work than lyrics ever could. Drake's lyrics can be considered simple, like some folk music, but I'd consider them deceptively simple. Songs on this album can cover wasted possibilities, isolation despite proximity, or--dare I suggest Nick Drake wrote such a song--love. I love his descriptions, especially in "At the Chime of a City Clock." He had the softest voice. Every time he sung, the words came out so gentle. Bryter Layter was a peaceful, calming listen. An instant favorite.

Honestly I wouldn't consider myself one for folk, but this album had a lot of beautiful arrangements. 5 is a little high (I would personally do 4.5), but 4 seems like a slap to the face.

I cooked a really nice pumpkin pasta whilst listening to this

Sad and beautiful

Very much his strongest album

Favs: Hazey Jane II, At the Chime of a City Clock, Bryter Layter (preciosa instrumental), Northern Sky (la mejor, seguramente)

12.00, kipeenä himas, koss, qobuz

Sometimes I feel like doing this project is a waste of time and sometimes I come across a great album like this and it’s actually worth it 🙂‍↔️

Nick Drake is a great singer-songwriter and his music is always a soothing joy to listen to. I don't really like all the instrumental backing on here though. Sometimes it works great and on the whole it's fitting instrumentation, but especially towards the end there and moments that would've been better left without. This is still part of a great trilogy of albums though, and it's nice that Nick Drake eventually found his following, even if it's years after he passed.

Nick Drake. He had that thing. Not many musicians have it. But he did. Like many great artists, he suffered during his life. And you can hear it in his music. One of the things first is in my opinion a masterpiece. It’s not a perfect album. But the majority of this album is fantastic. 5 stars. Without question. So original.

While I don't think Nick Drake needed all three of his albums on this list, I'm at a loss as to which one(s) to drop. My guess is this one, but it is still one of the greats! The brass and strings make this album his 'fullest' and most uptempo/uplifting, but the melancholy is still there. I can't get enough of his voice, as always. This should have been a hit record, but he never got one of those, which might have led to Pink Moon and his untimely passing. It's very sad that such a talent left us so early. Worthy of 5 stars, much like his other two albums.

generally in rotation for me.

Some wonderful songwriting here.

Beautiful

Prachtige muziek met een prachtige stem. En het komt ook op een ideale dag, met de herfst in het vooruitzicht. 4.5

This is probably my least favourite of Nick Drake’s 3 albums but it’s still brilliant and beautiful. The guitar hook on Haney Jane II is etched in my mind.

Fantastisch album

This account sucks, the person who made it should be ashamed of himself

This is the two hundred tenth album I’m rating. For a little over a month I've been avoiding this album but here I am now. Adding to my Playlist - Introduction, Hazey Jane II, At the Chime of a City Clock, One of These Things First, Hazey Jane I, Bryter Layter, Fly, Poor Boy, Northern Sky, and Sunday. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. All in all I liked 10/10 songs. Nothing on this album stands out too much but it was all good.

I needed this record today. Not sure if I like it better than Pink Moon but it gets the higher rating for hitting the melancholic spot.

Holy shit, That was an incredible arrangement of music. Like a soul sold to the devil for it kinda good. It felt like this album was made specifically for me to enjoy. The whole production gives an immediately classic vibe, like the album inspired countless other music projects after it, so Drake is probably one of the giants everyone's standing on the shoulders of. Definitely worth listening to before you die, if I had this album before the internet age it would be a prized possession and I would bother everyone to come listen to it with me. (Anyway I'm convinced Nick Drake was totally a woman and I'm sorry she didn't get to transition back in the 70's. I'm also pissed I didn't mull a while to transition, if I had waited a few more years, I might have been able to make a piece of art that has something to say as much as this album does. Maybe that's just me.)

My least favorite album of his

clearly an attempt at more mainstream which cuts back from full Nick Drake potential. Even more depressing because this was also a flop at the time. The freaking flute is so good. nothing to give it but a

Very sensual and such a beautiful album to listen to. Wish it was Pink Moon cause it’s a full moon tonight.

Cool, entspannt und USA pur.

This was the first Nick Drake album I listened to after Garden State. It’s hard to believe this is the same artist that made Pink Moon. It’s like listening to Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and then listening to Rumours. Heartbreaking to hear the life and optimism that’s gone on his following record.

Perfecto

Merveille

Yeah fucking hell it’s good

His best work. So massive, I can’t really explain how much it means to me. Poor boy might be my favourite song of all time. It’s another 5.

a beautiful album with tracks full of colour. listening to this while watching sunset made it a spiritual listen. the tracks are melancholic but still have a warmth to them. it's a really comforting album to listen to and it left me wishing it was longer. i've had 'northern sky' on repeat since and can't wait to listen to his other albums. his voice is smooth and compliments the underlying instrumentals perfectly.

It's fine margins but I come back to Bryter Later slightly less frequently than I return to Five Leaves Left or Pink Moon. It contains some of his finest songs but overall I tend to agree with his own feelings that some of the songs have a bit more decoration than they really need. Having said that it's still a great album and it boggles the mind that he didn't achieve at least a modicum of commercial success during his own lifetime.

I had only heard Pink Moon before (last album before he became an hero). This one is just as stunning, but in a completely different way. Man was talented af

lovely!!!

Everything I like about Cat Stevens turned up to 12

Dreamy, Ethereal & Real all at the same time. What a great album and lovely guitar work.

First time listener. I loved the musicality of it all.

beautiful, gentle, everything perfect.

love nick drake, not his best album but still deserves 5 stars

Pink Moon is too much for me albeit it is Great. So this is one for me

Amazing. All these songs are classics.

so fucking nice

Gotta be great with a name like that!!

This is the type of music that just makes you stop thinking and look at flowers and stuff. Just beautiful.

This album is right up my alley and I'm so surprised I haven't heard of nick drake b4!!! Also this guy has great hair:) "I could have been a sign post" REAL. I'm between a 4/5 and a 5/5 tbh

Excellent songwriting, lyrics and a great voice. Really enjoyed.

Incredible debut

Nick Dale has been my favorite discovery of this challenge
