Good first track, the rest is entirely forgettable.

Not quite sure what I think of this. There are moments when it's really good, but long periods where it isn't. The intro to Redondo Beach sounds like a reggae version of the intro to Common People, which amused me... Gloria the clear standout track, rest of the album just not as good. 2/5.

Really didn't vibe with the vocal style. I'm sure this was groundbreaking when it came out, but a lot of the ideas here feel a little cliche now. I might like the album a bit more if knew the lyrics well, but I don't see myself returning to this any time soon.

I’m hopeful for today’s album. Patti Smith is an icon of 80’s pop rock. Who doesn’t love Because The Night? Nobody, that’s who. Aside from that, I’m not actually sure that I’ve heard much else by her. Indeed, no track titles on today’s album ring any bells for me. Let’s explore some more into her music and see what we find! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Gloria, Kimberly How odd that the tracks that stand out for me here are both names of people. These were the catchier tracks here, but unfortunately I don’t have much else positive to say. There was a lot of messy noisiness throughout. Birdland was a prime example of this and was frankly difficult to listen to, being basically spoken word with messy music in the background. I was hopeful for this, but it frankly just wasn’t very good. I expect this will be one of those albums that are loved by many, and I just didn’t click with it like others did.

Cat: I wanted to like this. I did not. Her voice is super cool but also so annoying I couldn’t keep going. AJ: saw her open for Neil Young and her energy was insane. She’s a poet. But she definitely isn’t something you just pop on. Because the Night is great, but it ain’t on here. I’d love to sit and talk to her. But a lot of her stuff ain’t really for me.

Did not connect with this album. Lots of wailing and I'm not sure what type of music this was. Like a folksy pop punk? Wasn't a huge fan.

Sorry Patti Smith fans. She has a habit of doing this thing at the end of a line that I just can't get past. I don't know how to describe it. It's the she constantly ends in this falling, wilting tone. Once I noticed it, it was just always present and ruined what may have otherwise been decent music. Surely somebody out there knows what I'm talking about.

Even though it was made before 1989 (Mike) I still don't like it.

Birdland was so so bad. Like really bad.

I feel like I would have enjoyed this more if it wasn't set to music. I like the punk aesthetic and the poetic quality of the vocals, but the repetitive backing band was tedious.

I didn't expect the rawness and almost punk nature this had, but it was appreciated. However, I just didn't really vibe with this at all. Really didn't care for the two longer spoken word numbers and found them really to be long stories with the background music kinda forgettable. I did like some of the other tracks like Kimberly somewhat.

I want to like Smith more than I do. I just find little to enjoy here - the words are smart but maybe too smart- a case of overthinking at times. And same goes for the music. It’s done well, but perhaps too well to get across any real passion. It doesn’t move me. I guess all the elements are there but they just don’t stick, for me. I find it interesting that this gets mixed into the punk soup of the time - to me this is more about the old rock order of groups like The Doors, given a 70s update. I prefer this to The Doors, but it feels like a step - rather than a Great Leap - forward.

I know I should adore this album. Everyone else seems to. But I find it a little meh. I get the raw energy, but the songs sound half-finished to me. It's not exactly a party floor filler, either. Sorry.

She seems to do a lot vocally without much skill - in way that might appeal to some people but not to me. Super influential and ahead of her time though.

HEYYY! I used to have this album! It's been ages since I've listened to it. My favorite was Rock n roll Nigger, but of course that is no available on Spotify, found it on YouTube though. Listening to that first. I could have sworn it was on Horses but I guess it was on Easter. I guess my first time hearing her was from the NBK soundtrack! Pure gold that one!

It's clear Smith can write and play interesting guitar parts, but that means little if she can't get her vocals out of the way. I'm all for experimental singer-songwriter approaches to liven things up a bit, but the tricks, gimmicks, and downright annoying vocal mannerisms across this thing just kept me from getting into the flow of the album.

There's some songs that are good and more punk-ish like Free Money but then there are those that are extremely barebones and a chore to listen to. I could've died without listening to this album

I'm sure I've tried to listen to Horses from Patti Smith before, because others have cited this as an influential album. I don't enjoy listening to Smith sing. I might like "Kimberly". It reminded me a little of the Talking Heads, but as if Gordon Gano sang about half of the lyrics. "Horses" was flirting with being "okay" too. I'm not mad that I listened to the album, but I don't want to do it again.

67/100: Not a huge fan of this album. It didn't sound all that unique, and definitely won't stick out in my memory. Honestly, I can't even recall any songs that stuck out in my mind. Overall, incredibly forgetful, so much so I think I've already forgotten it. I certainly will not revisit in the future as I likely won't think of this album ever again.

Who doesn't love a song where they spell out the lyrics for you? R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Didn't care too much for the carribeanesque Redondo Beach. A little bit too far out there for me.

Ok. I really wanted to like this album because it's so influential. But I just don't do well with meandering lyrics and song structures. It makes sense that she toured with Dylan a lot as they both have very poetic styles. I do like her voice, so maybe I'll try a few other albums to see if they have more structure.

Huge overrated and not nearly as powerful, poetic, passionate as it desperately wants to be. It works in moments, but not in any sustained way and it just sounds raw and exhibitionistic and overly emoted now. Who cares enough about "Gloria" to search for the irony or the deconstruction? Same as the imagistic dream of "Horses" morphing into "Land of a Thousand Dances." Its reputation seems vastly overblown all these years on.

Fuck "Birdland". So long and aggressively annoying. The rest of the album was a mixed bag. Definitely one that's more important than it is enjoyable.

Meh, there were a few times where I thought things were getting better and then it just went back to feeling like spoken-word poetry.

So she seems to go out of her way to make her voice as unpleasant as possible. I don't know why one would do that when your art form involves people listening to your voice. 'Free Money' was the only song that was kind of okay, though I didn't listen well to it since I was working. But it's what bumped this to a 2.

I tried to like this album. I listened to it three times. Every time I felt like there were places where it felt like the song was going to get good and hook me, but it never did. I waited half a day for a third listen thinking maybe it was my mood or what I was doing in the day or something and expecting that I might hear it with new ears… but alas. This just didn’t work for me.

Who from our generation doesn't remember the building power of "Gloria". Raw and fun. That said, the rest of the album did not age well. Good; not great. She was great live. Saw my freshman year. Was in a line-up with Grateful Dead and some no-name down at UMass.

"Gloria: In Excelsis Duo" is an attempt at punk. "Redondo Beach" is minimalist blues (if that's even possible). "Birdland" is a 6-year old kid trying to explain their day to their parents. "Free Money" is a hybrid between Lynard Skynard's "Free Bird" guitar solo and Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" if a cover band somehow butchered both of them. "Kimberly" is slam poetry about a woman. "Break it up" is about having sex. "Land: Horses / Land of a Thousand Dances / La Mer(de)" is incoherent ramblings of a lunatic to the same drums, guitar, piano, and bass for almost 10 minutes. "Elgie" is depression and mental instability in song form. You can DEFINITELY hear the Velvet Underground inspiration in this one. God it sucks. I hated the Velvet Underground album and now I have something as bad if not worse thrown in my face. It's a 0/10. I have to give it a star, but it doesn't deserve it. This shit sucks ass.

I tried to give this a 2. Nothing worked here.

Raw proto-punk and poetic rock built on loose guitars, minimal piano, steady rhythms, and intense, spoken-sung vocals unfolds with restless, confrontational energy. Listening feels like standing in a dim loft where words spill out in long, unfiltered bursts over a band that shifts beneath them. The result is powerful and distinctive and at the same time its free-form approach feels uneven.

I hadn't heard of Patti Smith before this album popped up (Rather, I hadn't connected her name with what I had heard of hers), and didn't have a good idea of what I was getting into just from the album name and cover alone. Looking through reviews, I found a lot of people calling her "Female Bob Dylan" which does reign true. I also found many people who gave this album 5 stars saying that it's her lyrics that inspired them to give this album such a high rating. Perhaps I'd say similar if I understood anything that she was saying. While I do appreciate clever and poetic lyrics in the music I listen to, I am far more drawn to the musicality of an album. This album is not for people like me. I can respect what Patti Smith was for the punk rock scene, but this album did not capture my attention at any point.

Patti Smith's vocal presence is grating (reminds of school bullies). The album is emotionally taxing — specific imagery (boy hitting locker) is disturbing rather than artistic. Revolutionary for 1975, maybe, but unpleasant to listen to. Needed upbeat music to recover from the mood it created.

I had to actively fight the urge to cover my ears, even with earbuds in...why must Yoko Ono's reincarnation make me suffer on this dull Monday?

I saw Patti Smith open for the Indigo Girls at Red Rocks years ago and it was hands down the worst live performance I've ever seen. I wasn't too familiar with her music so I've always wondered if she just had on off night. While that may have been the case, this album suggests she didn't have much to work with anyway.

Feels like poetry being recited to a beat in some cases. The lyrics are pretty progressive and counter cultural. Overall, not super engaging but I can see the appeal for others

I read about how Patti Smith was sort of the Godmother of punk. I would not doubt that is true, but I was delighted when this album was over.

Smith was one of handful of New York musicians trying to create a new form of rock and roll in the early 70s but when the resulting aesthetic consists of hypertheatrical poetry readings over cruddy garage rock backing, it's pretty much dead on arrival.

Quite a frustrating one to be honest. This is my first time hearing of her and therefore first time hearing her stuff. I can't help but feel like Smith could easily make better music than this. When she sings properly, it's great. But when she starts doing weird noises and different singing styles it just sounds so shit. The music itself is so boring it hurts. At least with many of the other boring albums I've had on the list previously they've been somewhat pleasant to listen to. I know it's supposed to be minimalist. But there's a difference between minimalist and laziness. Maybe Smith isn't being lazy. But that's what it sounds like. If it makes it any better I wasn't sure whether to give it a 2 or a 1, so this is probably the best album I've rated a 1 here. Good job Patti.

Is this album provocative, rebellious, culture defiant, fused with a slam poetry style presentation? Maybe. Does this connection to self identification, or lack thereof, with culture at that time mean it is artistically deep, innovative, or lyrically complex? Not in this case. I was disappointed because this album has such raving reviews. Saying “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine” is powerful, and many revere it as one of the greatest opening lines ever. But then go nowhere with it after? At face value it was attempting to push boundaries, but stating provocative things in a punky voice is just stating the obvious. The envelope was nudged. I think…

What an absolutely dreadful voice. The songs weren't much better either! I suspect a lot of drugs were involved in both the making of this album, and the process of selecting this as one of the 1001 albums 1 ⭐️

11th album with group. I wanted to relisten and rerate this. I’ve been thinking I might’ve been too harsh. After listening to it again though my opinions are pretty much the same except I’ll swap Elegie for Kimberly. Good Songs - Gloria: In Excelsis Deo, Redondo Beach, and Kimberly. Bad Songs - Birdland, Free Money, Break It Up, Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer, and Elegie.

Wasn't very good

There’s nothing here that I’d ever want to hear again.

It was really hard for me to form an opinion of this album as I just found the way Patti Smith's sang, irritating. Most of the time, I just couldn't wait for the songs to end, and I thought she dragged on the ending of many of the songs way too long. I liked the different instruments which added to the music, but I was biased as I just couldn't get past my dislike of the way she sang. All that said, my favorite song on the album was "Elegie" which was surprising as it was basically just her singing with a piano. Worst song, in my opinion, was "My Generation". I just felt like she was trying too hard to be a "hard-rocker". The second half of the album were live versions of the songs, and I've never really been a fan of live versions as I really don't want to hear all the clapping, hooting and hollering from the audience. The more than 17 minutes of the combination of the songs "Land: Horses Land of a Thousand Dances etc" was entirely too long.

No thank you, 1/5. I'm a big defender that an "album" doesn't just have to be pure music, and I am absolutely willing to rate an album well if the experience was thought provoking or enjoyable in some creative alternative way. So I feel I was open minded when I realized this album was more aligned with poetry than traditional music. However, I imagine the song "Birdland" would be similar to the result of putting an 8 year old on a stage and telling them to make up a song on the spot, and telling a very competent pianist to try and keep up with the made up songs direction.

Forerunner for a lot of angst ridden grunge in the 90s. Not an easy listen and certainly not an album to return to. One for the chin strokers only.

Yow, I didn’t get that one. I can certainly hear the velvet revolver sound. Not something my ear could make sense of.

Had to skip through songs. The vocals rubbed me the wrong way. I think the lyrics were interesting, but I didn't want to listen to them.

I wanted to enjoy this one but I didn't really at all. I find her voice annoying and the musicians sound like a jam band. I find jangly guitars difficult to get along with and it was all just a bit noodly and directionless. If I had to pick some nicer moments they would be on Free Money and Kimberley, but no. This album is not for me.

Really tough listen. Patti Smith´s music is more art than music for me. And it´s an art form which just doesn´t resonate with me. Was waiting for the album to end pretty early on. 1/5

I know I’m in the minority here, but this was beyond awful to me. I lasted about 20 seconds before turning it off. One of those artists where I’m truly baffled by their popularity. The vocals almost seem like a put on or something, she does this weird faux southern drawl interspersed with odd high pitched inflections and yelps. Just can’t do it.

Overrated

Turned it off halfway through birdland. Aggressive DNF. Then I thought - hey, you’re better than that. Then I got to the end yowling of “break it up” and I wanted to throw my speakers out of my window.

on first listen the vocals are a little bit raw and unfiltered and not exactly melodic and especially for a female singer. Upon further listen I actually very much dislike her vocals.

Just don't have the ear for Patti Smith. Not a fan of her voice and her live version of My Generation is just annoying. No thank you.

Ugh I hate this. This makes me wish I gave some of the other 1 star albums 2 stars because they don't compare. Totally unsurprised to find this is produced by a member of the Velvet Underground. Listening on it's overall not quite so bad as I felt from the opening (though some of the songs are that bad). I hear the avant-garde punk. I hear stuff that pretty clearly influenced acts like Sleater-Kinney. Also not surprised to learn that she was a poet-turned-singer instead of the other way around. It ended up not as bad as I was worried it would be but I'm still not ever going to be excited about listening to it again.

I really wanted to like this, I did. Especially because of the absolute killer of an opening line. But this is just Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters in the 70s with slightly more of a band behind her. Why is she singing like that?

Happy to have listened to a seminal album and all but I do not wish to hear it again.

I fast forwarded through pretty much every track on this album, that’s gonna be a no for me. One star

Thus album is such a mixed bag, some of the songs i enjoyed, like redondo beach but the vast majority I struggled to either finish. It is interesting at the very least, and might take a lot of listen to like but so far I am not a fan at all

Alright so, This is pretty raw, definitely a bit too raw and unpolished for my standards. You can hear potential and amateurism in this project. I can’t seem to get behind the vocal inflections on this, however her voice is pretty good. Listening to this however, made me listen to “Wave”, which is a much more polished work that I have really liked so far.

I didn't get this at all. Though now that I see that it was produced by a member of the Velvet Underground, it makes total sense. And just like my review for them, I deem this to be over-hyped tripe enjoyed by the same people who gush over paint splatters on a canvas and call it "art". MAYBE if I had heard this for the first time in 1975, I'd have praised it, too, for daring to do something different. But, as I am not a product of that time, and I have the benefit of having heard a wealth of better things that came in the 50 years hence, I'm grading this for what it is and not for what it may have been. Some things simply DO NOT age well - regardless of what they may or may not have inspired.

I felt like I was listening to Phoebe on Friends singing in a dark, smoky basement bar. This may have been my least favorite so far.

Redondo beach is a great song, and Patti’s songwriting is definitely good, her lyrics are very poignant. But, most songs were a miss for me and it’s probably a 1/5 for me since I really only enjoyed one song.

Not for me. 1.5. Wouldn’t listen to again. Some songs are okay but I couldn’t get into it. Had to turn birdland off halfway through that was more than enough for me.

i have a playlist that is called "when people yell and pretending it's singing" and I'd put this in that playlist except for the fact that I hated it. lyrics can't make up for the execution of the yelling

I wanted to like this, I like a lot of the other stuff from this time and place. But holy shit this was absolute agony. I get it’s punk, and DIY whatever you want attitude but that doesn’t mean it has to be so obnoxious. 1/5 never again

Terribile

There's nothing punk about this album, it's pretty blah and mostly annoying. The songs have no hooks or anything that catches you. Her voice doesn't sound authentic, it's like she's putting on too much theater and I can do without all the weird "ah ah" additions. Send it back to Birdland, it's a 1.25 for Patti.
