Reviews (page 11 of 11)

first song is kinda cool but overall far too artsy for me, i bet gen x loves it. nick cave type bullshit just with female singing. 2/5

Nope, not a fan.

Never a fan of the NYC art rock scene but I figure I listen to this anew and I tried to get through it long ago and could not. Still can't.

05/31 Boring

Horrible. Reminds me of Kate Bush. Dissonant and talk/yell singing, weird poetry-like readings, hated most of it. A few songs were survivable. She even managed to butcher covers like My Generation - so bad.

couldn't make it past song 3. had to turn it off.

I don't understand how anyone can listen to her and enjoy that awful sound coming out of her mouth. Unlistenable.

No średni

An album I would replace this one with: PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her (2004) 4/5

"Gloria: In Excelsis Duo" is an attempt at punk. "Redondo Beach" is minimalist blues (if that's even possible). "Birdland" is a 6-year old kid trying to explain their day to their parents. "Free Money" is a hybrid between Lynard Skynard's "Free Bird" guitar solo and Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" if a cover band somehow butchered both of them. "Kimberly" is slam poetry about a woman. "Break it up" is about having sex. "Land: Horses / Land of a Thousand Dances / La Mer(de)" is incoherent ramblings of a lunatic to the same drums, guitar, piano, and bass for almost 10 minutes. "Elgie" is depression and mental instability in song form. You can DEFINITELY hear the Velvet Underground inspiration in this one. God it sucks. I hated the Velvet Underground album and now I have something as bad if not worse thrown in my face. It's a 0/10. I have to give it a star, but it doesn't deserve it. This shit sucks ass.

leider nicht meins. 1.4 sterne

not my thing 1/5

A chier

No me gusto y no me engancho

I tried to give this a 2. Nothing worked here.

Raw proto-punk and poetic rock built on loose guitars, minimal piano, steady rhythms, and intense, spoken-sung vocals unfolds with restless, confrontational energy. Listening feels like standing in a dim loft where words spill out in long, unfiltered bursts over a band that shifts beneath them. The result is powerful and distinctive and at the same time its free-form approach feels uneven.

I hadn't heard of Patti Smith before this album popped up (Rather, I hadn't connected her name with what I had heard of hers), and didn't have a good idea of what I was getting into just from the album name and cover alone. Looking through reviews, I found a lot of people calling her "Female Bob Dylan" which does reign true. I also found many people who gave this album 5 stars saying that it's her lyrics that inspired them to give this album such a high rating. Perhaps I'd say similar if I understood anything that she was saying. While I do appreciate clever and poetic lyrics in the music I listen to, I am far more drawn to the musicality of an album. This album is not for people like me. I can respect what Patti Smith was for the punk rock scene, but this album did not capture my attention at any point.

nope. The first song, there was a part i liked, when they were singing "gloria" but then i realized, i only liked it because it sounds like the song "victoria" by the kinks, written 6 years prior. song 2 i liked the instrumental. song 3, i liked it until she started singing..

Not for me. 1/5

Patti seems extremely cool however album is not my favourite however it was a good way to stay awake on the plane and did enjoy elegie at the end

Patti Smith's vocal presence is grating (reminds of school bullies). The album is emotionally taxing — specific imagery (boy hitting locker) is disturbing rather than artistic. Revolutionary for 1975, maybe, but unpleasant to listen to. Needed upbeat music to recover from the mood it created.

I had to actively fight the urge to cover my ears, even with earbuds in...why must Yoko Ono's reincarnation make me suffer on this dull Monday?

Not really my kind of thing

an unpopular opinion but i never liked her

Average listen Very unmusical

Pues la recordaba como más... más... algo!

1.4/5 I'm not the biggest fan of her voice and it was a pretty bland album. I know she's a big artist but this album didn't really do anything for me.

nää för irriterande röst

Just because someone is an incredible poet and a great mind, does not always mean they should make music..

I saw Patti Smith open for the Indigo Girls at Red Rocks years ago and it was hands down the worst live performance I've ever seen. I wasn't too familiar with her music so I've always wondered if she just had on off night. While that may have been the case, this album suggests she didn't have much to work with anyway.

Feels like poetry being recited to a beat in some cases. The lyrics are pretty progressive and counter cultural. Overall, not super engaging but I can see the appeal for others

not my cup of tea

This one's just not for me, which is unfortunate because she looks so cool on the album cover. I listened to it a while back, and I'm still just not understanding it.

Nope, not for me!

To moany-squeaky. This is probably what goofy’s wife (RIP) sounded like while getting it on.

Strange songs & strange intonation.

I feel like I would've liked it better if I liked her voice but I just can't get into it

wasn’t feeling this yst, got through one track before quitin on it. this one might be on me folks

I read about how Patti Smith was sort of the Godmother of punk. I would not doubt that is true, but I was delighted when this album was over.

Smith was one of handful of New York musicians trying to create a new form of rock and roll in the early 70s but when the resulting aesthetic consists of hypertheatrical poetry readings over cruddy garage rock backing, it's pretty much dead on arrival.

🥇redondo beach 🥈kimberly

Didn’t understand the hype around this one. Sounded like nonsense and noise

she has better songs

not for me

1. gloria - 0 2. beach - 1 3. bird - 0 4. money -0 5. kimberly - 6. break - 0 7. land -1 8. elegie - 1

Gibt mir nichts

Gives Maureen/Pheobe Buffett vibes.

Rough on the ol ears

Abrasive x pure noise tbf, no redeeming features at all

Quite a frustrating one to be honest. This is my first time hearing of her and therefore first time hearing her stuff. I can't help but feel like Smith could easily make better music than this. When she sings properly, it's great. But when she starts doing weird noises and different singing styles it just sounds so shit. The music itself is so boring it hurts. At least with many of the other boring albums I've had on the list previously they've been somewhat pleasant to listen to. I know it's supposed to be minimalist. But there's a difference between minimalist and laziness. Maybe Smith isn't being lazy. But that's what it sounds like. If it makes it any better I wasn't sure whether to give it a 2 or a 1, so this is probably the best album I've rated a 1 here. Good job Patti.

I didn't like this album. Lots of talking and yelling and just making noise.

Dette er sikkert å banne i kirka, men dette likte jeg ikke i det hele tatt. Bråkete, rotete, masete.

Eh, she screams a lot

Is this album provocative, rebellious, culture defiant, fused with a slam poetry style presentation? Maybe. Does this connection to self identification, or lack thereof, with culture at that time mean it is artistically deep, innovative, or lyrically complex? Not in this case. I was disappointed because this album has such raving reviews. Saying “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine” is powerful, and many revere it as one of the greatest opening lines ever. But then go nowhere with it after? At face value it was attempting to push boundaries, but stating provocative things in a punky voice is just stating the obvious. The envelope was nudged. I think…

What an absolutely dreadful voice. The songs weren't much better either! I suspect a lot of drugs were involved in both the making of this album, and the process of selecting this as one of the 1001 albums 1 ⭐️

don’t piss me off no…just no you absolutely do not need to listen to this before you die and i’m so happy i don’t have to listen to it again

Wtf is this shit? Why would she sing like that? This album is irredeemably bad, and "Birdland" has gotta be one of the worst "songs" I've ever heard.

11th album with group. I wanted to relisten and rerate this. I’ve been thinking I might’ve been too harsh. After listening to it again though my opinions are pretty much the same except I’ll swap Elegie for Kimberly. Good Songs - Gloria: In Excelsis Deo, Redondo Beach, and Kimberly. Bad Songs - Birdland, Free Money, Break It Up, Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer, and Elegie.

Just an absolute racket

I couldn’t finish it

The sound of bitching put to tape

Who thinks this is good music . . . ?

This fucking sucked

Wasn't very good

There’s nothing here that I’d ever want to hear again.

It was really hard for me to form an opinion of this album as I just found the way Patti Smith's sang, irritating. Most of the time, I just couldn't wait for the songs to end, and I thought she dragged on the ending of many of the songs way too long. I liked the different instruments which added to the music, but I was biased as I just couldn't get past my dislike of the way she sang. All that said, my favorite song on the album was "Elegie" which was surprising as it was basically just her singing with a piano. Worst song, in my opinion, was "My Generation". I just felt like she was trying too hard to be a "hard-rocker". The second half of the album were live versions of the songs, and I've never really been a fan of live versions as I really don't want to hear all the clapping, hooting and hollering from the audience. The more than 17 minutes of the combination of the songs "Land: Horses Land of a Thousand Dances etc" was entirely too long.

No thank you, 1/5. I'm a big defender that an "album" doesn't just have to be pure music, and I am absolutely willing to rate an album well if the experience was thought provoking or enjoyable in some creative alternative way. So I feel I was open minded when I realized this album was more aligned with poetry than traditional music. However, I imagine the song "Birdland" would be similar to the result of putting an 8 year old on a stage and telling them to make up a song on the spot, and telling a very competent pianist to try and keep up with the made up songs direction.

Not my thing

Not my thing

Forerunner for a lot of angst ridden grunge in the 90s. Not an easy listen and certainly not an album to return to. One for the chin strokers only.

damn i sure hate her voice

Fucking terrible.

Yow, I didn’t get that one. I can certainly hear the velvet revolver sound. Not something my ear could make sense of.

Had to skip through songs. The vocals rubbed me the wrong way. I think the lyrics were interesting, but I didn't want to listen to them.

Not a fan

que desgosto ouvir esse album

I wanted to enjoy this one but I didn't really at all. I find her voice annoying and the musicians sound like a jam band. I find jangly guitars difficult to get along with and it was all just a bit noodly and directionless. If I had to pick some nicer moments they would be on Free Money and Kimberley, but no. This album is not for me.

Not for me

This man can sing. Probably leaning toward 3.5 but upped to 4

Really tough listen. Patti Smith´s music is more art than music for me. And it´s an art form which just doesn´t resonate with me. Was waiting for the album to end pretty early on. 1/5

I know I’m in the minority here, but this was beyond awful to me. I lasted about 20 seconds before turning it off. One of those artists where I’m truly baffled by their popularity. The vocals almost seem like a put on or something, she does this weird faux southern drawl interspersed with odd high pitched inflections and yelps. Just can’t do it.

Overrated

Turned it off halfway through birdland. Aggressive DNF. Then I thought - hey, you’re better than that. Then I got to the end yowling of “break it up” and I wanted to throw my speakers out of my window.

on first listen the vocals are a little bit raw and unfiltered and not exactly melodic and especially for a female singer. Upon further listen I actually very much dislike her vocals.

Just don't have the ear for Patti Smith. Not a fan of her voice and her live version of My Generation is just annoying. No thank you.

8 minute songs are as bad as hour long albums. Hated this

Music was fine but that voice is hard to listen to to.

Ugh I hate this. This makes me wish I gave some of the other 1 star albums 2 stars because they don't compare. Totally unsurprised to find this is produced by a member of the Velvet Underground. Listening on it's overall not quite so bad as I felt from the opening (though some of the songs are that bad). I hear the avant-garde punk. I hear stuff that pretty clearly influenced acts like Sleater-Kinney. Also not surprised to learn that she was a poet-turned-singer instead of the other way around. It ended up not as bad as I was worried it would be but I'm still not ever going to be excited about listening to it again.

I really wanted to like this, I did. Especially because of the absolute killer of an opening line. But this is just Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters in the 70s with slightly more of a band behind her. Why is she singing like that?

Happy to have listened to a seminal album and all but I do not wish to hear it again.

I fast forwarded through pretty much every track on this album, that’s gonna be a no for me. One star

She's famous for this?

Thus album is such a mixed bag, some of the songs i enjoyed, like redondo beach but the vast majority I struggled to either finish. It is interesting at the very least, and might take a lot of listen to like but so far I am not a fan at all

全然合わない。 1

Alright so, This is pretty raw, definitely a bit too raw and unpolished for my standards. You can hear potential and amateurism in this project. I can’t seem to get behind the vocal inflections on this, however her voice is pretty good. Listening to this however, made me listen to “Wave”, which is a much more polished work that I have really liked so far.

her voice is so annoying

I didn't get this at all. Though now that I see that it was produced by a member of the Velvet Underground, it makes total sense. And just like my review for them, I deem this to be over-hyped tripe enjoyed by the same people who gush over paint splatters on a canvas and call it "art". MAYBE if I had heard this for the first time in 1975, I'd have praised it, too, for daring to do something different. But, as I am not a product of that time, and I have the benefit of having heard a wealth of better things that came in the 50 years hence, I'm grading this for what it is and not for what it may have been. Some things simply DO NOT age well - regardless of what they may or may not have inspired.

I felt like I was listening to Phoebe on Friends singing in a dark, smoky basement bar. This may have been my least favorite so far.

Hated this. Couldn’t finish lol

This sucks. 0/5 if I could. "Best" songs: Free Money, and Break It Up.

nooo sorry could not finish this

I don't really know how this is considered punk. Really boring, I find her voice quite annoying. No thanks.

Redondo beach is a great song, and Patti’s songwriting is definitely good, her lyrics are very poignant. But, most songs were a miss for me and it’s probably a 1/5 for me since I really only enjoyed one song.

Bluhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Maybe autotune has ruined my ears, but I’m pretty sure that wasn’t singing.

Aldri hatt foten og det ble bekrefta

Not for me. 1.5. Wouldn’t listen to again. Some songs are okay but I couldn’t get into it. Had to turn birdland off halfway through that was more than enough for me.

Dziwne to było doświadczenie. Nie powtórzę go nigdy.

Meh. Bit floaty

I see the influence this had on artists I do like, but this hasn’t aged well

Couldnt get through it

not a fan, sounds rough and unpolished, interesting lyrics though

Not much good to say.

i have a playlist that is called "when people yell and pretending it's singing" and I'd put this in that playlist except for the fact that I hated it. lyrics can't make up for the execution of the yelling

I wanted to like this, I like a lot of the other stuff from this time and place. But holy shit this was absolute agony. I get it’s punk, and DIY whatever you want attitude but that doesn’t mean it has to be so obnoxious. 1/5 never again

Terribile

There's nothing punk about this album, it's pretty blah and mostly annoying. The songs have no hooks or anything that catches you. Her voice doesn't sound authentic, it's like she's putting on too much theater and I can do without all the weird "ah ah" additions. Send it back to Birdland, it's a 1.25 for Patti.

This was a pile of horse shit. I did not like any aspect of this album. Patti Smith rambles about nonsense and the band throws together some weak back up. Makes sense it was produced by a guy from Velvet Underground. Another long song album with some garbage covers thrown in. File this one under hard pass...0.79.

From the very first note and opening lyric of "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" I was worried about this. I was pleased to find that I was not in line for a 45 minute gospel album. However, I wasn't thrilled with what I got either. Patti Smith's Horses was a mix of annoying and pretentious poetry rock that was a pain to get through. I get that she attempted to bring a punk rock edge to this but it just didn't work for me. A couple songs were listenable but the majority of the album had me itching for a skip button. Patti is a miss for me. 1.09 stars

Jesus Christ bro, this one was bad. It’s maybe barely better than some of the other god awful albums on here, but only just. Why she singing out of time so much? Why she so screechy? Wtf even is this album? 1 star

One of the most overrated artists of all-time. The most well-known track (and only single) from this album is a poorly-executed cover of a great song.

Nah bruh

This is the 13th album I’m rating. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this album and that cover is iconic. However, I know nothing about her, the album, or what genre this is. So I’m going into this almost completely blind. I’m guessing that this is either country, folk, or bluegrass. Gloria: In Excelsis Deo - Adding to my Playlist. I’m thinking this is country. Redondo Beach - Adding to my Playlist. I’m thinking I’m wrong. I just thought that with a name like Horses and Patti Smith it would be country. Birdland - Not Adding to my Playlist. Way too long for my taste. Free Money - Not Adding to my Playlist. The vocals are a bit repetitive. Kimberly - Not Adding to my Playlist. I don’t like the singing. Break It Up - Not Adding to my Playlist. I thought it was a little boring. Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer - Not Adding to my Playlist. This is too long and kinda annoying. Elegie - Adding to my Playlist. This sounds pretty good. All in all I liked 3/8 songs. This wasn’t that great and I would say it is about as good as Opus Dei.

Not a fan. Very 'whiney' with her timbre. Instrumentally unimpressed as well. Don't love the spoken word parts. Fav Track: Gloria: In Excelsis Deo

Starts off slow then gets a bit shouty (x8). Not for me

Just really plain and boring.

It’s not completely unlistenable but I honestly couldn’t name a single thing I liked about this album.

No, this is not for me. My brain just doesn't do 'poetry' and the very intense and very serious and very theatrical spoken word-ish presentation doesn't help. I like songs and melodies. Not endless freakrock work-outs with caterwauling vocals. I am a bit puzzled why this is always classified as punk. Apart from the shout-y vocals, it doesn't really sound that punk. The band just sounds like any sixties or seventies rock band. Maybe a bit wilder than average, but not that much.

Not for me

Een beetje een vreemde vrouw met saaie liedjes. Nee, het wordt tijd voor een leuk album.

Just plain sucked, she still tours tho

Another example of where the music is fine but the vocals are unbearable. Like Neil Young.

The only memorable thing about this album is her horrid singing style. I read about her and it says shes punk. Usually when something is punk I expect to be more annoyed at the topic at hand than whoever is singing, not that I can even discern what the topic is outside of the title. I dont get the hype.

I really disliked it, the style didn’t interest me at all. It was like bad karaoke.

- i cannot stand her voice i’m sorry

SNOOZEFEST

Discontinuity between raw punk lyrics and various folk, pop, rock melodies.

I'm having to skip most songs

This list continues to convince me that I don’t like punk music ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Listened to the first song and it is a no for me

Not for me

Absolutely shite

Jesus Christ no

Did not care for

Least favorite album so far. I will never listen to that again.

I hate to write this but, I really couldn't wait for this album to end. It's the first really arduous listen so far for me in this 1001 Albums journey. I absolutely appreciate how fresh this must have appeared on the scene at the time of release, and I like its punk, prog, blues, and rock mix that has clearly influenced artists like Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, however, I simply didn't enjoy the music. In fact, I absolutely prefer Velvet Underground, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey far more than this particular album. I don't really ever hear lyrics when I listen to music - it's one of my sonic quirks - and I suspect this will appeal much more to those who enjoy good lyrics. I guess Patti Smith simply isn't for me.

I did not enjoy anything on this album except for the occasional fun guitar lick.

Couldn't listen to it.

Not for me

Not my favorite vocals, but can appreciate the punk element and the song progressions

idk man

Uhh, never recommend me anything like this again. Not my type of music AT ALL.

Not for me.

Her voice is terrible, and given way too much emphasis in almost all the songs. Free Money is the only decent song, since it’s more of a rocker that drowns out her voice.

You cannot convince me this album isn't a meme way ahead of it's time. I swear to god this is an exact replica of Oil Spill from Bob's Burgers, a woman just feeling herself up as she moan-sings into the mic. A ten minute song about horses and a man dancing? How is that not Tina and Jimmy Jr? If this wasn't released so long ago, I would definitely argue she just stole inspiration from Bob's. I wanted to refrain from using a one star so early, but for most of the album I was just waiting for it to be over.

generico 1*

I listened to the whole album thoroughly despite disliking all of it. I tried. Just. Her voice mixes with a weird longing that my ears don't enjoy.

This was bad had a hard time finishing it

I don't think she knows she can't sing 😬 I'm not sure how this album wasn't the start and end of her career, it was that bad. She had this annoying thing she did with her voice between phrases that just got under my skin, very prominent in "Redondo Beach." Also, the end of "Free Money" made me hit the skip button faster than anything else I've listened to on this list. Then there was annoying repeating of the word "horses" at one point where I about said F this. I wish I could give this 0/5.

So hard to listen to this, and I tried but just not for me

This was not the most exciting album I’ve listened to. This was actually a pretty bad album. I did not enjoy this album much. This lady sounded like she had a cold the whole time meanwhile making long songs that could’ve been shortened in half. Not sure who this appeals to or why it’s on this list but it’s not for me. 2.5/10

What a horrible music

Awful. There are no ideas here. It's the same song for 45 minutes. And the song sucks.

Terrible

But know Patti Smith was cool. Part of the hip scene there in the 70s But this album sucks. And it’s not that I don’t appreciate raw sounding music that is not too over produced: in fact I love stuff like that usually. It’s that Smith’s voice is grating. I hate it like I hate Joni Mitchell’s similar bullshit.

Ненавижу хиппи. Что это блин за голос. Леваки ненавидят красоту. И откуда я знаю этот альбом, где каждая песня звучит как предыдущая? I hate made-up voices Это невозможно слушать Когда начинает себя бить в грудь, просыпается желание убивать. Ноль звезд

Couldn’t finish. Not mine.

Dogshit, unfortunately

Not good

A bit too weird for me.

how do people actually listen to this hoyl shti

Definitely not my thing.

Listened to it a few times in the past and a relisten today confirmed that this album is not for me. Most songs are too long and however much of a poet Smith is, I just hear moaning.

totally put off by the vocals and not a fan.

Its, soso...1

Don't like anything on this album.

that sucks

Bit shit

I am simply not a fan

Not really my thing

Didn’t do anything for me.

Mumbling 80lvl

I'd rather listen to my grandpa shit in a can

Can't listen to this. Her vocal inflection kills EVERYTHING!

Couldn't take her voice. I know she is well recognized. But not for me.

This is absolutely awful. Whiny, nasally, faux-deep...she has some much better stuff later on in her career. This is ass.

I don't get it

PS seems to be trying to be part of the real talent of her time, Dylan, The Doors, Lou Reed, Joplin, etc. Doesn't have the magic that any of them have/had. The music sounds like it might be good, but just sounds like it. Sounds like a tight bar band, with no reason to hit the big time. Exception might be Birdland.

I'm sorry I just didn't get it. It's just screaming with discordant supposedly meaningful lyrics. I think her voice sounds atrocious.

very basic album, was bored throughout the whole thing

not enough red wine in the world for that album

Really why tf do i have to listen all this shit before i die

stinks.over-rated. painful to listen to.

Meh. Didn't do it for me.

Such barf

This was pretty awful.

So long. Boy its long. Just... a lot of music.

not my favorite, I couldn’t finish it. I liked “kimberly” though

In de eerste nummers komt de compositie chaotisch op mij over. In het nummer Free Money wordt het al iets beter, maar nee dit album is niet aan mij besteed.

I hope I’ll never have to hear this again

Great listen front to back, get's a little samey towards the end but pay attention even a little bit and you'll notice all the differences and distinctions, awesome front to back all the same
