Reviews (page 10 of 11)

I get it, but it's not for me.

Loved Just Kids and Because the Night. This however makes me doubt my commitment to SparkleMotion. Maybe you had to be there.

like some of parts of some of the songs... so multiple quarters of songs in the album?

This has a lot of elements that I like and is clearly influential to so many artists I love but I can’t get over how grating Patti’s voice sounds to me and how much I hate her vocal rhythm and inflection choices

This is punk? Maybe I just didn't get it, 2*

I hear the greatness, but it does nothing for me.

It was fine - I expected more, to be totally honest, judging by the amount of artists I love who have covered Patti. I feel like I'm missing something here, but mostly it just kinda felt like a Lou Reed record or something.

I wanted so badly to like this. It honestly was like nails on a chalkboard for more than half the album. It's a no for me dog. One extra star bc the album cover kicks ass.

Didn’t float my boat

I found it a bland recording of weird bland pop music. I'm sure the lyrics are epic poems of timeless beauty, I just couldn't care less one way or another when it comes to music. I got nothing from this.

Not my style. 2/5

Just didn’t love this one much

Decent.

Old Days Patti will always be my early favourite bands’ favourite artist - huge for Michael Stipe and Bono and some guy from Manchester. Plus the influences on Siouxsie, PJ, Nick Cave, Kim Gordon and perhaps most audibly to me this go-around: Tom Verlaine (and I wonder how much of a back and forth that was for those crazy kids). Today There’s a kind of coddling that occurs with these formerly challenging upstarts. Take the wiki, no one would say the easy cure or bon savants “gave frequent live performances”. It situates Patti as a special artist, not just another populist rock n roller, which she professed to be over and over. Reading over the history with Cale some, Patti runs into a paradox of sorts about rock music, an originalism trap if you will. There’s this notion that the original thing - so, whatever you heard when you were a teenager - is somehow raw, unsullied by artifice, pure, unadorned, non-articulated, that that’s the real thing. And so she shows up at the recording studio and Cale asks the band to tune their instruments or do some arranging and she’s like THAT’S NOT REAL MAN but the original thing was, in this case, let’s say Van Morrison’s Them, rehearsed and rehearsed and honed their talents long before the adolescent Patti came across, uh, them. Moreover, Van Morrison’s whole schtick was an impersonation of Howlin’ Wolf, not remotely sui generis. But, there’s always something appealing about breaking things down to their perceived essence, be it of the 3 chords and the truth variety, something barely above a campus drum circle in AnCo, Nirvana and Pavement’s “punk” in the face of 80s cultural touchstones/hair metal, Run-DMC and NWA, Jack White’s whole aesthetic framework, etc. Keepers: Break it Up, Gloria

It's not for me Clive. Very, very, very beige. I don't get how this is called punk by some people. It's more like if a couple of private school kids tried to create punk. Very sterile and anodyne. She even managed to butcher a version of Land Of 100 Dances.

Not my favorite; nevertheless happy i listened especially now since I have her signed book

I know this is important, and I've tried soooo many times. She seems amazing, but...

Another shoite album. 1001 shoite albums to make you hate music. Why am I putting myself through this? Every album I can't wait until it's over after the first song.

I don't like her vocal delivery, but I can't argue with anyone who is a fan. She is a rock god. I prefer her work with The Pretenders.

Honestly just not really my thing and not something I’d choose to put on. Some of the songs were a bit long and I got a bit bored but I don’t think it’s a bad album vocals were good and had a nice vibe

Here's one of those classics I've never quite vibed with. It meanders a bit too long, and I always felt like Smith was one of those songwriters who just likes to hear herself a bit too much, ya know? But as always, don't just listen to me on this one, please go and listen to this album to make up your own mind. Like most others, you'll probably love it.

mom rock

I liked "Land: Horses" the most and saw value in "Break It Up" but other than that it was kinda just noise to me.

I liked her voice a lot and some of the songs but some were really weird.

Artsy. Dont get the lyrics. Not the biggest fan of the singer. Experimental for sure. Felt like poetry with instruments. Nothing stricked with me too much. Most of the time i just felt like that im not either high enough or fancy enough to understand it.

Perhaps the worst singer I've encountered in almost 500 albums I've reviewed. Came across as an overly self indulgent attempt at being artsy. Even the few somewhat catchy songs are ruined by her wailing.

I also didn't enjoy this album. That being said, I can hear the influence of this album throughout. We got some ska, we got some poppier bits. Overall it was a decent listen, but not one I'm like to return to.

The more I listen to old school punk, the more I realize that I don't like old school punk. It feels like how others feel about metal music and screaming, I just don't get it. Not for me. I was glad it was over so that I can move on with my day. During Birdland, my wife said "This sounds like a goat. The album is called Horses? Is she trying to mimic one? maahhhhhh (mimic goat sound)"

When theatre kids go punk. A masterclass in how to build to something, but not every song can be a 9 minute buildup and have the same pay off. The production and instrumentation on this album are outstanding (especially the bass playing.) But there are several songs that are beyond self-indulgent and some even verge on annoying. The back half certainly is much stronger than the opening half. Overall there are lots of interesting nuggets and a few truly great songs, unfortunately a few missteps take away from the overall album.

1.8 2x

If I'm being honest, I really wanted to like this a whole lot more than I did. I know she's a legend. I much prefer her singing voice to her talking, screaming, wailing...or whatever she's doing in "Birdland." There's a consensus amongst my low rated rock/punk albums and it's screeching vocals, I'm just not a fan. It's uncomfortable to listen to, and it's just really not my vibe. "Gloria," "Free Money," and "Kimberly" were all great tracks, and she's definitely a good lyricist. I'm not sure where this lands on a scale of 1-5. I like it more than most of my 2 star ratings so far, but less than my 3 stars. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If this is her first album, I hope we get a few more from her discography, because I'd love to hear how she progresses. Maybe I'll like it, maybe I won't, but happy to listen.

Didn’t like her voice much but lyrics were great

only on the first song but I can tell this isn't gonna be my jam since this one is the most listened track on the album, ya im good

Gloria was absolute fire. Loved it. But the rest of the album simply did not hold my attention.

I wish I thought this was greater, but I'm just bored. Sorry.

This woman is a freak

I really wanted to like this…

Not for me

Not really my cup of tea. Certainly an interesting album and glad I heard it but probably won't listen again.

A few nice moments here and there but otherwise dull

2.5 stars. Art punk rock. The two covers ("Gloria: In Excelsis Deo" and "Land of A Thousand Dances") were interesting but didn't care for the rest of this, as influential it may have been.

говнище

DNF. Made it three songs in. Not sure ill ever be able to slog through this. Not as unpleasant as waits

Really not a fan of the vocals or the intense, dour music

Jesus, that was a long 43 minutes. Parts of it sounded like the rantings of a mad woman. It might be musical genius, but unfortunately, I just don't get it. I giving a bonus star because I do like Patti Smith, just not this album!

This is like if the Clash wanted to be poets instead of musicians. The first two songs (one of which is a cover) are actually pretty good. The rest of it is spoken word with a crescendo/decrescendo pattern over and over. Birdland just doesn't end. Land: Horses... just goes on and on and on. I'm just not in to it. I cant' give this a 3 because I decidedly did not like it, but it's more of a 2.5 than a 2. I realize this probably influenced a lot of albums and artists that I do like but you can say the same thing about a lot of music that sucks.

I have heard of Patti Smith before... pretty strange but einzigartig so far this might be my first 3/10 or 4/10 lmao just not my type of music at 6AM I only listened to 2 songs, sorry, was busy

Quite strange. I wasn’t expecting this punkish vibe or harsh vocal delivery. Not for me.

I wasn't too impressed by this album.

While I like "Because the Night," there isn't a single song on this album that even comes close to it. Not my jam.

I did not care much for this album. I am running out of novel things to say, so I can’t really say anything but that her voice is offputting

I liked the Van Morrison cover, but I’m not really a fan of Patti’s singing style.

Was not into it at first but as it went on I appreciated it more. Still not my thing but I totally see the hype.

I did not expect to find her singing so insufferable. Stand-out: Break It Up

Nein. Nichts besonderes.

Was excited for Patti Smith but really was just giving “OIL SPILL OIL SPILL” vibes the whole time

Some okay songs

Hmmmm. Either genius or garbage. Her biggest selling song was written by ‘much easier to get a handle on’ Bruce Springsteen. The best track on this is the cover of Them’s Gloria - clearly worked up over hundreds of bar gigs. The other best track is the cover of land of 1000 dances. Which for someone who is supposed to be a songwriter might be an issue. The originals. Ummm. The band is good. It doesn’t help that so much wadical wevolutionary bullshit has been attached to this album. Gag me with a spoon. Zappa gets justifiably criticised for his adolescent attitudes. Yet Patti gets praised. Maybe that’s a strike for feminism. * and also to be fair one can’t blame the artist for what is said about them. On the plus side - a strong woman using her voice in a male dominated industry. On the negative side - I don’t think it’s very good. ‘Jesus died for somebody’s sins/but not mine’. What does that mean? She believes in sin but is not a Christian? She’s a Christian who doesn’t think she’s saved? Or she’s a pretentious blowhard whose depth would struggle to get wet in a small puddle? It is a must hear. If only to understand the so called punk or new wave movement in New York at the time. But once is probably enough. It has a cult following so if that’s you, go to it and continue enjoying it and digging out the nuances and love every tape squeak and breath and all of it. It ain’t me babe. Poets. God save us. * this is not meant to be an anti feminist creed. I try to support feminism as best as my social cultural and political habitus allows.

Love CBGB era music, but Patti Smith ain't it for me. 2/5

Reminded me a lot of Lou Reed. Her voice was generally more pleasant to listen to than Lou Reed, but the album was still an unpleasant listen. I'll give it 2 stars since it's better than Lou Reed's "Transformer" that came up a while ago.

Eek. I’m with Sam on this one. I’ll give it points for clearly having a creative spark behind it, and not being soulless, but for the most part this was pretty unlistenable. The song about someone’s Dad passing just didn’t come across as in good taste at all to me, the use of so many strange ways of delivering the vocals really devalued the significance of the story. I won’t listen to this album again, that’s for sure.

Don’t like her voice sounds fake and forced

I mean, it was alright…

I can hear the punk in there, but it isn’t enough for me.

Gloria is a banger, but this is just not for me. I'm not saying it was not important or influential. It's just not for me. Because when you're checking the length of the track list during the third song to see how much longer you have to commit to an album, it's just not a fit.

Man man man, het zit niet mee deze week.

What does a Horse and Patti have in common...... They both can't sing. How is this one of the top 1001 albums.

dear Patti, Jesus did die for your sins, and for everyone’s

This had a very "overstaying it's welcome" vibe. It wasnt terrible but I found myself starting to proverbially looking at my watch a lot.

Maybe I didn’t give it a fair enough shake, but I really just didn’t enjoy this album.

Patti Smith sounds like a drunk girl at a karaoke bar trying to sing Fleetwood Mac songs.

I’m sorry but I just don’t get what all the hype is about

Not interesting and way too pleased with itself

I have heard of Patti Smith before, but I only know one of her songs, which wasn't on here. I won't be listening to any of these songs again. Each song was too long, I could have saved 5 minutes if they were the correct length.

Didn’t like it at all

Interesting music for it's time I guess. Kinda reminiscent of the velvet underground. Doesn't do much to distinguish itself for me. Medium 2.

Patti Smith is another singer that I've heard of for years,.but never really listened to. She has an interesting voice but this album didn't really grab me. Redondo Beach had an interesting Blondie type reggae-ish vibe to it. The sound is pretty stripped down, but I think that's one of the reasons it didn't grab me.

Couldn't get into this. Can hear her influence on others, which was cool. But not really a great listen. 2/5

These songs were too long and boring for me.

I wanted to like this album much more than I actually did. Seemed to go on too long and wore out its welcome. 2.4

I did not like it

Good foundation for the great PJ Harvey, but not my bag. Not a fan of the voice

Começo do punk! Mas n gostei!

I appreciate and respect Patti Smith but this album does not appeal to me at all.

While not personally a fan of Patti Smiths vocals I can understand this albums place in history as a revered album. On paper this album should be right up my street but there just wasn't much, in my opinion, that grabbed my attention and held it for longer than a few seconds. Patti Smith is undeniably a great lyricist but sonically this album didn't really do it for me and overall felt like it dragged on a bit and teased you with a potential musical break but never really delivered sadly.

Not for me.

I had a hard time getting through it, but managed. I can sort of see how it might appeal to a certain group of people, but not enough to see how it would show up on a list of albums one must listen to before they die...

It's not really my thing, but I appreciate the musicality and historical importance of Horses. Having said that, it's really not my thing.

A bit boring

I have read that Patti Smith inspired many, but this one was a bit of a slog.

Not for me. It is too incohesive and too meandering regarding lyrics and music. No one star because of Gloria.

Just the female bob dylan? Music is alright but could not listen to the singing

Patti Smith as a NYC icon is much more interesting than Patti Smith as a recording artist

The title song was the only decent song on the album. Rest of them were painful to listen to.

Definitely important, you can here the influences on rock music for the next 30 years. Amazing voice/emotion/power. A little too experimental for my taste. Glad she made it, I am unlikely to choose to listen to it.

I like Patti Smith’s voice, and the overall sound, but I don’t actually like a lot of the songs individually.

There are some points of the album when i wanted to stop listening. I know she get a lot of props for this album. Maybe at the time it was influential but…Not a fan.

Not for me.

Couldn't get into it.

Solid vocals but nothing that captured me too much. Album title track was probably my favorite.

Someone please get your friend off the karaoke mic. She's clearly wasted

Started great, grew bored, didn’t finish, saved nothing to favorites.

Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood, but I had a hard time getting into this

The instrumentals were okay, but Smith’s voice is just annoying to listen to. None of the songs really captivated me and she sounds whiny. DNF.

She's saying a lot of words. The production is sort of empty as well. Most of the songs blended together for me, nothing stood out that much except for the opening line which everybody quotes. Kinda disappointed by this one.

This bounces from great to unlistenable and back again.

Apparently Patti Smith is like Bob Dylan? More a poet than a singer? This was not my jam. I really really tried, but like Dylan, I just found this boring. Horses was ok. I get why that song has the most plays. Let's just say I wouldn't listen to it again.

I had high hopes for this after reading how many artists were inspired by this album. I get that it broke barriers and such but it's just not an enjoyable listen.

Wow! Super punk feel but I didn’t really enjoy it. Had the feel of listening to a live album with the looseness but wasn’t very fun to listen to. 2/5

I feel bad for not enjoying this, as Patti has been such a huge influence on much of the music I like. Her voice just really turns me off for some reason. She's clearly a good songwriter, and writes interesting lyrics, I just don't like her singing. Free Money was the first song on the album I found tolerable, and I almost turned it off before then.

An important part of the music scene.

Journey of struggle

Had really big expectations for this one, and was excited when it came up! But in the end it was a dissapointment 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲 Played the album 3 times, i was bored and nothing really had my attention besides the album starting with "jeasus died", the whole thing felt theatrical and forced. Listened to Legacy Edition that had some live recordings in the second half, and i liked those a lot better than the first half, lives had a raw emotional feeling that the rest of the album was lacking.

I had some appreciation for how her poetry merged with the music but for the most part I couldn’t wait for this to end

This album was ok, just ok. It didn't feel very "punk rock" to me, maybe the genre has changed since the 70's.

She’s very passionate but a lot of the songs just didn’t speak to me.

I wanted more from this.

Just noise. Not great, but I guess it wasn't horrible.

I like her voice and nothing else about this.

This was pretty gross, to be honest.

#37. There's really only one good Patti Smith song, and this isn't the album it's on. This one could almost get a 3- almost, but there's a few songs that are actively annoying. I don't really have even a little bit of desire to listen to this one again. 2/5: meh

I was relieved when it was over. There’s talent there but I just didn’t like her chosen singing style. She’s certainly got singing chops but most of the time, she chose a different style with terms I’m sure a trained vocalist would know but I couldn’t stand.

I went into this album hearing from my dad when I was younger that Patti Smith was big rock and roller. I was expecting more of the album to be like the first song or her cover of my generation (both of which are fantastic, before I even listened to this album Gloria and Redondo Beach were already in my saved songs). Instead, I found this album contained more poetry. The album starts off really well, but then reaches a lull with Birdland. The only other saving grace in my mind was Horses, which blended the poetry with a rock jam. I can get behind long winding poetic songs (I’m a big Dylan fan) but some songs on this album were very Avant-Garde. I get the artistic vision of this album and it’s merits but I’ll stick with the rocking Patti Smith over the poet for now. This album will definitely get another listen later on though for sure.

# 83 : Ok, not a bad album, one I can listen to but not real good either. Had nothing significant and nothing stood out. Wouldn't go back to it out of choice. Fav Song : Free Money Listened : 09/10/2023

Unexpectedly punk rock.

Alright. 2

Pretty forgettable. 2/5 Won't listen again

Not bad. Not as bad I mean, as some of the other albums so far

this is a thing.

Proto-punk meets counterculture sound. I liked “Gloria: In Exelcis Deo” more than the rest of the album I think, but there’s something to be said for a strong start. Unfortunately, I thought most of the rest of the album was dogwater and a great example of the fact that just because an album is underground and edgy doesn’t mean it’s Good.

From the very first track of her debut album, Patti Smith wants us to know she’s not fucking around. She turns a classic song on its head and makes it her own, and while it’s hard to listen to at points, it’s not exactly easy to listen to the Doors’ remake of “Gloria” either. She continues to leave a trail of wreckage in her wake with the uncomfortably long “Birdland,” and by the time she gets to “My Generation,” you’d think Roger Daltrey was an obedient schoolboy and not one of England’s biggest rockstars. There are hints of relaxation throughout the album, like the reggae of “Redondo Beach” and the Dire Straits-esque guitar of “Free Money,” but Smith isn’t going for Monet on a calm spring day. She’s going for Picasso on Adderall, and she nails it. All that being said, and as much as I appreciate her thought-provoking lyrics and the fact that each line is as unexpected as the one before it, I just don’t like the music itself, and there’s no getting around that. At least that saves the album from getting one star.

Favourite songs: Gloria: In Excelsis Deo, Free Money Least favourite songs: Birdland, Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer(de) 2/5

Very unique and pleasant voice but the album was a one and done for me.

Good first track, the rest is entirely forgettable.

Not quite sure what I think of this. There are moments when it's really good, but long periods where it isn't. The intro to Redondo Beach sounds like a reggae version of the intro to Common People, which amused me... Gloria the clear standout track, rest of the album just not as good. 2/5.

Not a big PS fan, I want to like it tho

Really didn't vibe with the vocal style. I'm sure this was groundbreaking when it came out, but a lot of the ideas here feel a little cliche now. I might like the album a bit more if knew the lyrics well, but I don't see myself returning to this any time soon.

I’m hopeful for today’s album. Patti Smith is an icon of 80’s pop rock. Who doesn’t love Because The Night? Nobody, that’s who. Aside from that, I’m not actually sure that I’ve heard much else by her. Indeed, no track titles on today’s album ring any bells for me. Let’s explore some more into her music and see what we find! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Gloria, Kimberly How odd that the tracks that stand out for me here are both names of people. These were the catchier tracks here, but unfortunately I don’t have much else positive to say. There was a lot of messy noisiness throughout. Birdland was a prime example of this and was frankly difficult to listen to, being basically spoken word with messy music in the background. I was hopeful for this, but it frankly just wasn’t very good. I expect this will be one of those albums that are loved by many, and I just didn’t click with it like others did.

Cat: I wanted to like this. I did not. Her voice is super cool but also so annoying I couldn’t keep going. AJ: saw her open for Neil Young and her energy was insane. She’s a poet. But she definitely isn’t something you just pop on. Because the Night is great, but it ain’t on here. I’d love to sit and talk to her. But a lot of her stuff ain’t really for me.

Did not connect with this album. Lots of wailing and I'm not sure what type of music this was. Like a folksy pop punk? Wasn't a huge fan.

didn't really connect with this all that much. I like the guitar work and production though. best tracks: gloria, free money, break it up

2/5 Best: Gloria Worst: Elegie

Sorry Patti Smith fans. She has a habit of doing this thing at the end of a line that I just can't get past. I don't know how to describe it. It's the she constantly ends in this falling, wilting tone. Once I noticed it, it was just always present and ruined what may have otherwise been decent music. Surely somebody out there knows what I'm talking about.

Even though it was made before 1989 (Mike) I still don't like it.

Birdland was so so bad. Like really bad.

Didnt connect with me.

No, I never got Patti Smith. I just don’t like her tone, the content just seems like a rambling stream of consciousness. Not for me thanks. 🍣

i never liked horses, but patti smith fucking rocks and i would happily go back in a time machine and marry her

Even weirder than expected. Not a fun listen but interesting none the less.

This annoyed me. I don't know why. Her voice? Urgh.

Not for me. Don't enjoy vocals that sound really distant and weak, a recording technique or the mic tech of the times?

I feel like I would have enjoyed this more if it wasn't set to music. I like the punk aesthetic and the poetic quality of the vocals, but the repetitive backing band was tedious.

I didn't expect the rawness and almost punk nature this had, but it was appreciated. However, I just didn't really vibe with this at all. Really didn't care for the two longer spoken word numbers and found them really to be long stories with the background music kinda forgettable. I did like some of the other tracks like Kimberly somewhat.

I couldn't get into it. But might have been sick.

I want to like Smith more than I do. I just find little to enjoy here - the words are smart but maybe too smart- a case of overthinking at times. And same goes for the music. It’s done well, but perhaps too well to get across any real passion. It doesn’t move me. I guess all the elements are there but they just don’t stick, for me. I find it interesting that this gets mixed into the punk soup of the time - to me this is more about the old rock order of groups like The Doors, given a 70s update. I prefer this to The Doors, but it feels like a step - rather than a Great Leap - forward.

I know I should adore this album. Everyone else seems to. But I find it a little meh. I get the raw energy, but the songs sound half-finished to me. It's not exactly a party floor filler, either. Sorry.

She seems to do a lot vocally without much skill - in way that might appeal to some people but not to me. Super influential and ahead of her time though.

HEYYY! I used to have this album! It's been ages since I've listened to it. My favorite was Rock n roll Nigger, but of course that is no available on Spotify, found it on YouTube though. Listening to that first. I could have sworn it was on Horses but I guess it was on Easter. I guess my first time hearing her was from the NBK soundtrack! Pure gold that one!

"Gloria" y "Free money" me han gustado, pero lo mismo no era el día porque me he aburrido bastante. Lo siento pero van a ser 2 estrellas aunque lo volveré a escuchar.

I appreciate the direction and novelty of the album, but I found it a bit grating at times.

I get why it’s influential but it just does not grab me.

I've always liked Patti Smith as a person, author and activist...but her music has never hooked me.

Progressive, great drum production, too avant garde for me.

really not my style, and i didn't really like it

Not for me.

Gave me flash backs to Kate Bush but it at least had a couple of songs that were listenable

I hope Patti Smith is in a better place mentally now. This album was a whirlwind.

It is a punk rock. It is not that good. I found it annoying. The Gloria cover was bad. I never really got into it.

Don't really get it

Not a real fan of this. But it’s miles better than that George Michael’s album that was on here the other day.

Not bad, would have to see if Patti came before allanis morisette because that’s all I heard in this

left me somewhat cold

Muutama ihan ok mutta monen kappaleen pilasi improvisoidulta kuulloatanut laulu. Birdman erityisesti rasittava

It's clear Smith can write and play interesting guitar parts, but that means little if she can't get her vocals out of the way. I'm all for experimental singer-songwriter approaches to liven things up a bit, but the tricks, gimmicks, and downright annoying vocal mannerisms across this thing just kept me from getting into the flow of the album.

There's some songs that are good and more punk-ish like Free Money but then there are those that are extremely barebones and a chore to listen to. I could've died without listening to this album

This one didn’t do much for me.

Favoritas: -Free money -Break It Up

Much respect. Just not my thing almost 50 years later.

Didn't mind it the first time but then listen the next day with Patty and I did not enjoy it nearly as much. Little too much talk singing. Definitely a bit experimental. A few of the songs were okay.

Didn't recognize her name, but did recognize the top track! (Gloria). Next track was unremarkable and I had to skip Birdland after 3min. Talking is not singing. So much talk singing. Not really enjoying the rest of this album.

Vill gilla detta. Vissa låtar låter bra men överlag inte bra tyvärrrrrrr

Screechy. Overrated.

I can see some talent here. I bet some of her other albums are amazing. This one... not so much.

She has a great voice, just found her lyricism and general song creation peculiar.

Fell asleep to it. That doesn't say a lot, or maybe it does. I don't know, she was embracing that punk energy, but didn't feel like she had the chops to back it up. Maybe it was just me being tired, but it didn't hold my interest at all. Next.

Expected to love this and I didn’t

Started well but overall nah

I'm sure I've tried to listen to Horses from Patti Smith before, because others have cited this as an influential album. I don't enjoy listening to Smith sing. I might like "Kimberly". It reminded me a little of the Talking Heads, but as if Gordon Gano sang about half of the lyrics. "Horses" was flirting with being "okay" too. I'm not mad that I listened to the album, but I don't want to do it again.

eh. maybe im not in a good mood today?

I did not find this that enjoyable to listen to. The songs did not really seem or sound a lot like music to me.

67/100: Not a huge fan of this album. It didn't sound all that unique, and definitely won't stick out in my memory. Honestly, I can't even recall any songs that stuck out in my mind. Overall, incredibly forgetful, so much so I think I've already forgotten it. I certainly will not revisit in the future as I likely won't think of this album ever again.

ok. Cannot see what is so amazing about this ...

Who doesn't love a song where they spell out the lyrics for you? R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Didn't care too much for the carribeanesque Redondo Beach. A little bit too far out there for me.

Ok. I really wanted to like this album because it's so influential. But I just don't do well with meandering lyrics and song structures. It makes sense that she toured with Dylan a lot as they both have very poetic styles. I do like her voice, so maybe I'll try a few other albums to see if they have more structure.

Nervig.

I hear Gwen Stefani meets Lou Reed.

Really boring. Bizzare songs with bizarre lyrics that last forever and feel like they're about nothing. Would be a 1.5 if I could give it that.

It was wack

Apparently very good punk rock? I don’t hear it

I can see the influence, and love the crooning. Not so crazy on the poetry.

The album is interesting but doesn’t really hold you or make you really pay attention. Nothing inherently memorable.

bit too spoken word-y for my taste

not my kind of thing

This was interesting. Not exactly my cup of tea, but also not that far out there for me. I think this is a good album. But other moments had me thinking "I'd be happy to never hear this again". Maybe another listen would do it more justice. But I also wasn't compelled enough to consider another listen for the future.

Couldnt do it. Her voice killed it for me.

Just didn't interest me.

I can see why this sounded fresh at the time, so I'll give it an extra star for that. But this album was a nothing-burger-with-cheese.

Not a fan of Patti Smith

the instrumentals are nice

Huge overrated and not nearly as powerful, poetic, passionate as it desperately wants to be. It works in moments, but not in any sustained way and it just sounds raw and exhibitionistic and overly emoted now. Who cares enough about "Gloria" to search for the irony or the deconstruction? Same as the imagistic dream of "Horses" morphing into "Land of a Thousand Dances." Its reputation seems vastly overblown all these years on.

Meh, didn't do anything for me.

Wasn't all that interested in, whiney voice.

I normally like unique voices but I just can't get into Patti Smith. My third time listening to this album and it still just feels like loud wailing and wavering from a voice that isn't super great to begin with. I get that a lot of people really love her, but it isn't for me unfortunately.

Not really a fan. I liked a couple of songs though.

Niet slecht

Largely forgettable.

Good album, just not for me

Ei ihan mun tyyliä, vaikka hieno artisti onkin.

I want to like this more but just felt it to be alright and nothing more. 5/10

Not my kind of music.

2/5 something was off

Fuck "Birdland". So long and aggressively annoying. The rest of the album was a mixed bag. Definitely one that's more important than it is enjoyable.

Nothing really stood out about this. Other than it seemed like a lot of angst. Felt it got a bit too much by the end. Just a lot of unpleasant moaning

Meh, there were a few times where I thought things were getting better and then it just went back to feeling like spoken-word poetry.

So she seems to go out of her way to make her voice as unpleasant as possible. I don't know why one would do that when your art form involves people listening to your voice. 'Free Money' was the only song that was kind of okay, though I didn't listen well to it since I was working. But it's what bumped this to a 2.

probably good but not for me

Alright, not sure I was a fan of her voice but some good rocking songs.

Some good punky elements at times, but it was both a bit scattered and kind of safe.

The music is fun and energetic and maybe catchy but pattis voice sucks ass. Also in a somewhat bad mood when I listened to this

I respect what she was doing at the time but not my vibe

Eh 2/5

It was alright but I had a hard time paying attention. One recognized song

I tried to like this album. I listened to it three times. Every time I felt like there were places where it felt like the song was going to get good and hook me, but it never did. I waited half a day for a third listen thinking maybe it was my mood or what I was doing in the day or something and expecting that I might hear it with new ears… but alas. This just didn’t work for me.

Who from our generation doesn't remember the building power of "Gloria". Raw and fun. That said, the rest of the album did not age well. Good; not great. She was great live. Saw my freshman year. Was in a line-up with Grateful Dead and some no-name down at UMass.

Her sound is ahead of her time. Very original and a good deal of cool songs and sounds.

109. Horses - Patti Smith 18 track. Nope. Not for me at all. Really didn't enjoy this. 2/5

Yeah that’s really not for me… just don’t get that!

Nope. I had to fast forward through Birdland because it was so bad.

Nothing to add, just didn't feel the music.

Just noisy

Mjaah lidt ligeglad

Jeg mener, at hun har lavet bedre

Minimalistisk punk rock, 70’er, ikke så tiltalende

I understand the importance of this album to the future of punk but it really does nothing for me

I know that this is regarding as a classic, and I've now listened to the album 3 times in my life. I just can't get past the way she sings, throwing noise at a note but just not QUITE getting there. Sorry Patti, but my ears are just not compatible with your music, though I do like your band:-)

2/5 - Nope.

I like the instrumental and production, but I fuckin hate her rocker-stoner chick voice; it sounds like she's doing a characature and I can't take it seriously

Not my favorite style of music, personally a pass

Patti never was my thing

Not my style but did appreciate poetic mix in the songs. It had its moments

Weint zu viel, wird nach dem 3. Lied nervig

Honestly, I think this is over-rated. I get why it was ground-breaking at the time but for me it’s style over substance.

There were a couple decent ones on there but I don't really see what's so special

Lyrically this was a wild ride - definitely a bigger fan of her later work.

Liked it in patches but not really my cup of tea-can appreciate it musically etc but was samey in parts. Favourite song-Free Money

Vermoeiend plaatje.

I didn't like the way she sang. Other parts were fine, but if I want an album to be over well before it is, it can be a high two at best.

Really not feeling this one…. Something about it just didn’t draw me in and it did not really care for any part of it

Her voice sounds like someone doing a poor parody of a good singer.

Another album I just couldn't get into. Some interesting instrumentals at times, but Patti Smith's vocals are just not to my taste.

Ça cri un peu trop.

big Theater Kid vibes. i don't like this kind of stuff.

Meh, weak

Too pop-ish for me

Meh. Assez discordant.

dated, a snapshot of a time I suppose. But no fun for the ears, and not in a good way. hey, it's art, whatev

Almost fell asleep

Really wanted to like this but I'm on a more melodic wave right now
