Classic

I have an Urban Outfitters tank top that says Lust For Life across it. Trust they only honor the greats.

the swagger

An improvement of the debut album, although its much more Iggy "Pop" than his other works. It has his hits on it and works as a pretty good mainstream follow up. Bowie can produce and create any work to be great.

had a lot of songs I thought were more modern? I listened to the songs thinking, ive heard this before but it was different? good vibes tho

Other than big songs, ok

i like :p

It was a matter of time before I covered Iggy Pop's solo career in addition to his time with the Stooges. I was at least familiar with almost half of this album, Lust for Life, his second effort with David Bowie, which saw a return to his recognizable garage rock style, compared to the experimental The Idiot. I'd say this record did a decent job of returning to form. For a good chunk of this record, Iggy, Bowie, and company are in the pocket with the uptempo songs that are largely satirical. The title track with the bombastic percussion as Iggy rattles off various vices, continuing that manic energy on "Some Weird Sin", to the drive-by with Bowie by his side on "The Passenger", to challenging western perceptions of achieving fame on "Success", to the dysfunctional man portrayed on "Neighborhood Threat". These songs all capture a certain kookiness that is effectively delivered by the raucous instrumentation and Iggy's off-kilter vocal delivery. Even when they slow down the momentum on the ballad to heroin overdose on "Tonight", the composition still bounces and works wonders, even if the song sounds more fitting for Bowie. That said, I don't consider every song on this record to be great. Iggy and Bowie tried to strike lightning twice on the same record with another slow-burning heroin overdose ballad in "Turn Blue", and it comes off a lot more corny with the sprawling lyrics as Iggy veers off-topic to talk about the sexual appearance of black people. A similar case can be made for closing number "Fall in Love with Me", which goes on for longer than it should in its midtempo slog about this romantic interest. Speaking of romantic interest, I would be remiss without mentioning "Sixteen", which is in fact about being in love with a sixteen-year-old girl. This was an unfortunately common recurrence with rock music decades ago, with much older men writing songs about being attracted to underage girls. Suffice it to say, the song hasn't aged well. Still, I consider Lust for Life to be a solid record, as Iggy Pop went back to the garage rock format he was most recognized for.

This album felt like it could have been released this year. Timeless classic.

enjoyed!

אלבום מצוין Bowie ידע מה הוא עושה שיר מועדף - Some Weird Sin

Ah, Iggy. This is basically a Bowie album with someone else singing and arguably better than Bowie’s own albums from the period.

Interesting to remind myself where he started knowing where he ended up.

Despite not wanting to know what Iggy put in his ear, I think that, along with “Passenger” are great songs on an overall solid album.

These stripped down songs wouldn’t work with a lesser voice, but here is someone who knew his voice was an instrument. Perfect for the time; still works today.

Liked this more than expected. Always enjoyed the title track.

michigan excellence

Such a good album by a great artist. Best songs are probably "Lust for Life" and "The Passenger," but every track is well made.

A classic

More mellow and melodic than I thought it would be from a pioneer of punk. Reminds me of Love and Rockets and others that would come ten years later.

Music that lasts! Good vibes, good music

Banger after banger mate. Second instance though of 'Christ this is horrible' on the old gender politics side. Sixteen? Just bad! A bad song with bad vibes! Everyone knows the Big Two on this but Tonight also really good. Best track's still Lust for Life though.

The Bowie infulence is strong with this one. I like Iggy even the Stooges stuff but there are some great stand out tracks Passenger, Lust for life definetley up there.

it's easy to understand why it's called one of if not his best work, one star off due to some verryy questionable lyrics..

What if David Bowie was a nonce and high

Feels like quite the departure from The Stooges. As others have mentioned ad nauseam, Bowie's greasy goblin fingers are all over this album. Bowie brings consistency and a glossy shine to the sound. Takes proto punk into glam territory. Very fun stuff.

Love this album. Nothing earth shattering, just enjoyable as hell.

Really like Idiot as well but a lot of great tunes on this. Sales brothers are completely awesome.

I would have considered giving this a five star rating if there was less sixteen-year-old-girl lust going on. Iggy’s a great singer and the songs are all written well. The lyrics are about as good as good as we can get from the guy, but not too shabby (again, excluding that 16 year old thing). All in all, a very enjoyable album. 4/5

Tremendous. The patronage of Bowie is clearly huge, fabulous period inc Low - the production here arguably better (especially the lack of the bronchial drums). Bowie wrote and directed the title track - it’s a cultural touchstone but oft ignored. James sounds great throughout

I definitely need to listen to this again to have a good review, but I am confident it's not less than a 4. I hear similar sounds in Strokes songs as this album, an influence I never noticed before.

Discovered Iggy Pop because he's very prominently featured in the Time Traveler's Wife. Many 80s punk bands appear in the book, but only Iggy (and the Stooges) was both new to me and awesome. In a world that gives so much credit to the British for the origins of Punk, it's important to me that Detroit's Stooges get proper recognition. But tbh I never really got into him outside of this album and the Stooges' '69 self-titled one. But enough about the grimy sweatiness of the stooges. By the time of this, his best album, he (and Bowie) has learned to use to sweaty chaos more strategically and artistically. Loose thoughts: -The Passenger is one of the best rock songs of all time IMO, but I think I like Siouxsie's version better. Not at all to disparage this version, which is awesome. Also a super obscure Cambodian band's version (https://open.spotify.com/track/3xHweP9GDLyeW8e3BcmKuH?si=fcf8cc497ec74661) -The banging-clanging sound at the start of Lust for Life is pretty neat. -Oof I dunno what to say about Sixteen. A lot of artists (especially from this era) are gross in their interest in "little girls", but they usually have the plausible deniability of not explicitly saying the age. Compounding this, he apparently had a relationship with a 13 year old when he was 23. And it's the only song on the album he wrote entirely alone. -Some Weird Sin is a dubious song to have following sixteen. But on its own it's pretty cool. -The Passenger. Wow. -Tonight is easily the most underrated on the album. The very simple, poppy guitar. -Turn Blue is such a strange song. Usually I don't like it. It's placement next to Success, juxtaposing aspects of the rockstar lifestyle, is really interesting. Success itself tends to be fairly sneering in its depiction of success (the material wealth doesn't seem to be so great). Then we get this barely intelligible ramble from someone who appears to be ODing on heroin. But on the other hand, he's become a hideous shell of himself and that's just not super appealing as a listener. -Neighborhood Threat has these just incredible grinding distorted instrumentals. Everything here is so fresh. L Review: I've listened to this album many many times, and any of those times, I'd probably give it 5 stars. But Sixteen is really rankling me this time, the first time I've actually paid attention. I'm quick to separate art and artist, but of course Sixteen *is* the art. And it makes the rest of the album a little nasty. What sort of "weird sin" are we talking? When you say "so young" in Fall in Love with Me", what do you mean? He really does seem like a neighborhood threat at that point... But I love this album. Unfortunately this is how a lot of artists were back then. In this case it negatively impacts the album a little, over and above making me dislike Iggy Pop as a person (for better or for worse, I try not to rate the personal behavior of the artists we listen to) To speak to the rest of the album, it is so so good. Musically inventive, with experimental and unique sounds and a protagonist who is as multifaceted as the music.

This was a fun album, but I guess some part of me wonders (sorry Mr. Iggy Pop sir) how much of it was being driven by Bowie's production.

Cool album to have on when walking through a city…classic!

Classic

‘Passenger’ is really good obviously. I hadn’t listened to the whole album before but it’s pretty solid throughout. Good vocals and production. ‘Neighborhood Threat’ was a highlight too.

Loved this! Love Iggy Pop's voice. Favorite tracks were The Passenger (obviously), Success, and Fall In Love With Me. High 4 stars, almost gave it a 5 because of that album cover.

Honestly, I’m on the fence about whether this is a four- or five-star album. It’s very, very good, especially in the middle third (“The Passenger,” “Tonight,” and “Success”). You can hear a lot of David Bowie’s influence, even though Iggy had wanted to move away from that a bit. But Iggy’s punk is there strongly, too. There are some flaws. The mix on the title track seems off (it’s hard to hear Iggy). And the final three songs just leave me cold. So, with some regret, I’ll give this “just” four stars.

Begins with a great drum into has some fantastic songs. Passenger is a high mark. Makes sense that Bowie collaborated on this, there are a few times where his influence can be heard. All in all just a really good album.

Love it. Favourite track is Lust for Life 4/5

Iggy Pop goes hard... Two songs I definitely recognized that I didn't know were by Iggy Pop. Also didn't know that D Bowie was a creative partner.

Very easy to see his influence in later music. 'Tonight' reminded me of David Bowie while I found Turn Blue to be laughably bad. Had it's highs and lows, but overall I enjoyed it!

It is funny 2 me how many 80s goth (and adjacent) lead singers seemed to emulated his voice. I can appreciate this one, despite the skeevy lyrics, for the way it clearly informed many albums I like more. I GUESS.

A couple of my favorite songs, would listen to the album again.

Formative rock album for my dad

Before listening to this album I had not heard any Iggy Pop beyond the obvious hits. I really enjoyed it. Bowie's influence is all over it. The second side is weaker for me. Nice to have a short and to the point album. 4* Would I listen to this again? Yes Would I buy this album? Yes, probably! Side One 1. "Lust for Life" 5:13 - Hard to listen to this with fresh ears. Excellent. Great drums, bass and guitar. Super build to the opening vocals. 5* 2. "Sixteen" 2:26 - Guitars are razor sharp. It has attitude. Great rock n roll. Yes, I've read the lyrics. I read them as Teenage angst. "Sex, and drugs and rock n roll". 5* 3. "Some Weird Sin" 3:42 - 4*. This is a very good start to the album. 4. "The Passenger" 4:44 - You would have to be born under a rock to have not heard this. Simple riff. Excellent song. 5* 5. "Tonight" 3:39 - Later released by Bowie. This version is better. 4* 23/25 Side Two 1. "Success" 4:25 - I like this. Vocally interesting. Good melodies. Good drum sound. The bridge is excellent. 5* 2. "Turn Blue" 6:56 - Slower paced. OK. 3* 3. "Neighborhood Threat" 3:25 -3* 4. "Fall in Love with Me" 6:30 - Interesting song. I like the keyboards and guitar. Guitar sounds familiar; Earl Slick or Carlos Alomar? 4* 15/20

I like this guy, he's got that mysterious odd ball character to him. Like a real rock star. Good sound, floats between rock star sound and a Bowie sound (you can hear his style pop in)

Very fun rock album!

Besides the last song, I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would.

I wonder if IDLES pulled inspiration from this record. Some of the vocals in Lust For Life really remind me of Never Fight a Man With a Perm. Could just be coincidence but they are both post punk. Or maybe it's just a common thing that I haven't picked up on before. Honestly, I quite enjoyed this record. It was full of energy and started a little more raw sounding and then transitioned into something a bit smoother. I loved the Bowie influence on this record as well.

This is a really album! It kind of grows on you as it goes. I was kind of expecting more classic punk, but the David Bowie part of this record is really what sets it apart. I almost feel like this is more of a Bowie record than an Iggy Pop record. It really feels proto-indie rock or post-punk. It feels very similar to a lot of the indie rock that I listened to as a teenager. This is rad! Also, sounds kind of like Geese.

Title track is iconic, the rest was fun.

Really enjoyable album. Lust for Life and The Passenger are justifiably the 'famous' tracks from this album, but the other tunes all stand up really well. The Bowie influence is notable throughout, and the fact he was heavily involved in the production adds to the legacy of his 'Berlin Years'. 7/10

Big step down from his work with The Stooges. Still deec but only 4 star deec. Was a 3 star until Turn blue started playing.

Pretty good stuff here

Iggy has muscles no other man has. That most popular 1 star review guy has the most boring music taste of all time. It's OK to admit that cool stuff just isn't for you mate.

I loved this. Catchy lyrics, quick sweet riffs. Sold four stars from me, would definitely listen to this again

I spent the whole album not knowing any of the Bowie links and just thinking that I had no idea that Iggy's solo stuff sounded so much like Bowie. Bowie was rather good wasn't he. This album was also pretty good.

Explodes out the gate and comes so close to catching up.

Classic Rock album, I like the lower-fidelity warm rock n roll sound it has. Warm. Easy to listen too.

2nd part of his 77 Berlin with Bowie, probably like the idiot more but that’s splitting hairs. 4 Star

I’d never heard this album somehow. Glad it’s now on my radar for those Bowie Berlin binges I find myself on from time to time.

If this is Iggy with less Bowie input, I can’t imagine what his previous album sounded like. This has a lot of Bowie. I went in expecting to like the singles and not much else, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I really liked Lust for Life, The Passenger, Neighborhood Threat. I heard the Bowie influence and writing, and I also caught a common thread with Echo and the Bunnymen’s Killing Moon. Although a lot of the songs were not to my taste, I’m giving the album a 4 based on the influence it’s had on so much of the music I love.

Quite a bit better than I was expecting. I had heard the title track and Passenger before, but I was pleasantly surprised that the rest of the album was also pretty strong.

What an incredible instrument his voice is

Liked it, more Bowie than I'd anticipated which is no bad thing. Want to revisit this.

I liked this except for Turn Blue

War mir nicht bewusst das der Iggy "The Passenger" geschrieben hat. Toller Song und generell fand ich das Album ziemlich cool. Der Jung hat echt n markanten Sound :)

Decent Bowie inflected record with a couple of smash singles.

Not doing it for me, Passenger is well known for good reasons, the rest is good, but not amazing... Still, it's not bad...

This got sauce.

4 - just a good album. No over the top frills

Didn't know Lust For Life was by him. Love that song! And the Passenger and Tonight are others.

I did enjoy this and recognized some of the popular songs. I'm between a 3 and 4 here

Only knew the passenger but lots to like on this album. Somehow ahead of its time (in a strokes-y way) and super duper 70s. Big fan.

Fun, pleasant, frankly I kind of expect more from Iggy Pop. Wish it was more focused in one direction too.

que lindo escuchar a bowie

I think of Trainspotting every time I heard Lust for Life

Strong album with some clear bangers. More reminiscent of Bowie than I. expected it to be. (7/10)

I was surprised how much I liked this record. I wasn’t super into the production but the quality of the material here more than made up for it and made for a good listen. This was good

Está bueno, me gusta lo rockero que es

Love Iggy Pop, both his albums with the stooges and the first 2 of his solo career. Comoared to the more post pinkish solo debut this one's more straight up pank, packed with great performances and catchy songs.

Very nice

so THAT'S where Julian gets it from

The best Iggy Pop album I've heard so far and one that might actually merit listening to again to see if there's more below the surface Standouts The Passenger Turn Blue 4/5

Great. Had heard the obvious Lust For Life and Passenger before but the rest was new to me. Has been on rotation since

Fun, upbeat rock. Not work vibes

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Solid 4.

Really good

A pretty good album. Of course, Lust for Life and Passenger are the highlights... The rest I can kind of take or leave.

Had never heard this album beyond the songs "Lust for Life" and "The Passenger." Fantastic band (Bowie's band for the "Low" album and tour) and Bowie's fingerprints are all over this album. Hard to believe that this and "The Idiot" which is also on this list came out 6 months apart. Talk about a productive year!

A really enjoyable album

Definitely a cool and sexy album. It’s not something I think of when I think about the greatest albums but I deserves it’s spot on the list

Bowie take notes

Energetic and fun

It's like hypnotizing chickens.

Never heard of the album, I was pleasantly surprised. Absolutely phenomenal!

nice to remember a few songs, chaotic album, like it didn't know some songs, I like them great 70's punk sound thus far, I've enjoyed all songs :)

Hmm difficult. Iconic, amazing tracks. Want to give it 4.5 but alas.

This is a great album with obviously 2 standout tracks. Iggy Pop has lived a life for at least 3 people so it’s quite something he’s still broadcasting on 6Music.

What Matt said, but with one less star.

Was pretty good but I thought The Idiot was better and why do we need two Iggy Pop from the same era?

Important album in the history of punk and rock, some absolute bangers and way ahead of it's time

Such great pop. Bowie’s influence is obvious

Oh creepy but catchy

I so wish I had never learned about Iggy's taste in women (young!) Don't care to listen to a song about showing a sweet sixteen his explosion either. The album itself is great great, but man...

Solid rock album. Title track is fantastic.

This is so much better than the Idiot, it has some actual energy to it. Although I gave that album 1 star, and I'm starting to suspect that I may have received that at a time when I was in a severely bad mood or something and was overly-harsh. I might actually give it another listen.. Either way, this is still immensely better. There's some big hits on here like Lust For Life and The Passenger, but I also really dug some of the other tracks I hadn’t heard before, like ‘Some Weird Sin’. It's really solid overall.

Godfather of Punk, influence on the genre is clear. Absolute legend, The Passenger is a classic.

• better than I remembered it, if somewhat uneven in the back half • love the two big singles (though I prefer Soiouxie’s rendition of The Passenger) • he presaged punk with the stooges and indie/new wave with this album

so good

4/5. good stuff

geen bangers behalve lust for life en passenger

Early pandemic nostalgia. Love this album dearly

forgot to rate this. the songs i remembered and that we played into the ground are the ones that still hit, and otherwise this album isn't as good as i had hoped. but success is insane.

Banger

The more I listen to this, the more I like it. This might be some of the most interesting music I've heard by Iggy. Probably because David Bowie helped him. I'm giving this album a 4 minus the song Sixteen. Let's not normalize pedo stuff.

Good album, few really great songs

Such a good palette cleanser after the Tom Waits album I had before this. Before this listen through I had only heard the hits, but the rest of this album is just as good.

Heb hem de hele dag een beetje aan gehad, werd iedere keer leuker eigenlijk

Not as good as The Idiot. Side A is great but Side B loses some steam. Still, versatile and enjoyable album. I love Iggy Pop's music.

What a cool record, seriously. So far, I've been given albums by artists that I am familiar with, but haven't actually heard their music.

A classic. Really enjoyed it. C not paying attention. 4.5 but being sparing with my 5 stars

Great album!

Pleasantly suprised as I had never listened to the album w/ the single “ Lust for Life” on it. Iggy showing much more range than I thought he had

Felt like I was listening to David Bowie on much of this album!! Which is a Good Thing

Somehow I ended up in a mixed musical marriage. My wife and I have a lot of overlap in terms of bands we like, but there is also a ton of stuff I like that she doesn't. It can become problematic from time to time because there is ALWAYS music on in our house. I never get to put on Slayer when cooking dinner, but on the flip-side I also never have to listen to the Indigo Girls. This album feels like a loophole. I know she's not the biggest Iggy Pop fan, but I can lie and say that it's a Bowie album. Talk about sneaky compromise!

LOVE U IGGY

Enjoyed this, when I read that Bowie was heavily involved it all made sense. There’s almost a Lou Reed vibe in some of the songs and more punky notes elsewhere.

I really got into this, it's got alot going on but I had a fun time

Nice passive aggression buried in the tunes--who wouldn't want to ditch the liquor and drugs? I'm a passenger here watching through the windshield and seeing some straightforward repetition of the simple chords. Things get a little more inventive in Tonight with a little room for lead guitar. Is there any more really laid back vocal to Success? We get a few lines and repeat them. Some nice low tech low level guitar leaks into things here too. Hop, Twist, we've left it all behind for sweet cool detachment. And it gets better.

Raw punk David Bowie.

This was heading into 5-star territory until it ran out of gas. The last three songs just didn't hold up, but the first 2/3 of the album is stellar. The fact that this came out the same year as The Idiot is remarkable for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is the massive difference in feel and attitude. I'm realizing I've got a lot to learn about ol' Iggy, and he's a better vocalist than I would have given him credit for before we spun these two records. So, good stuff. I'm on board.

The Iggy we all know and love.

Pepohappy, Zeitreise

Baba Albom met zemlech glöckleche Rocksongs. Vorallem Lust for Life ond Passenger fühli ond send jetzt i minere Playlist.

Seminal record from Mr. Osterberg. I personally prefer The Idiot. I like the vibe/sonics/production better, but I think this one has better songwriting. Several collaborations with Bowie, whose influence overall is apparent. The verdict: Why choose, own both!

Two all-time classic tracks, the rest is at least very solid. Strong 3.5

Started as a three then moved to a 4... Albums like this help me understand how rocky horror could have been made in the 70s. I think part of why I liked it so much was that all the 2000s bands I really enjoy are derivatives of this sound

every song in here was a jam, up until turn blue. that shit killed my high lowk

Good album. Love the energy and genre blending of old 1950s doowop elements and 1960's pop and soul. Not nearly as punk forward as Raw Power, but nothing to hate there. Lust for Life is a lovely song.

Really liked this one. A bit repetitive but definitely deserves to be on this list. I can hear echoes of this album in so much music I love. One band I thought of especially was Franz Ferdinand, some of these tracks sound like they could 100% be theirs. 4/4.5

I honestly forgot how good this album is. It's more aggressive than the Idiot, which is the album I usually gravitate towards, but this really works. It has enough Bowie to be different with enough Iggy to be a showpiece for him. The band is tight and there's actual pop songs.

A few questionable inclusions that tempted me to pull the score down, but a great album overall.

Sometimes I want a little more Iggy and a little less Bowie, but it’s still great. 4/5

I just had Iggy Pop's The Idiot 2 days ago. Well, random is random I guess, and this is a much better album, anyway. We start off strong with Lust for Life. The Passenger is a classic.

This was a surprise. First time listening to Iggy Pop, and so glad I gave this a chance, since I haven’t liked any other album so far categorized as punk or post punk. This album is, in a word, fun. Also, The Passenger is a great song.

Such a great album, one of my favorite Iggy Pop records.

Not my favorite, but it has a ton of infectious energy that really carries it through

I needed this positivity. Really fun album experience.

If you like Iggy Pop (and I do!) this is a great album. Awesome riffs, vibe, attitude, it’s all there. Go listen to it.

Мне посчастливилось увидеть живого семидесятишестилетнего (76) Игги Попа на сцене. И он вышел и разьебал. Два часа. В 76. А ты так и ной, что «вышел из группы 18-24». Лучшая песня - Lust For Life.

Thoroughly enjoyed this album only one or 2 misses

Fantastic album. Rich and full of interesting ideas.

Brings back memories of borrowing this from the library when I was at school. Title track is an all time classic and other tracks heavily Bowie influenced.

energetic and vibey Favorite track: the passenger other picks: some weird sin, lust for life, turn blue

uhhh confused about the turn blue song but overall really liked the pace and chill vibes

I believe that album cover, that's a real smile! Ratings aside, knowing this was a healthy time in life for him and Bowie is nice. Fun picturing them collaborating. Ok, as far as a review goes, this isn't my favorite album, but it's got some undeniable tracks. The run of Some Weird Sin, The Passenger, Tonight is killer. Iggy is a character, and his music is a soundtrack.

iggy pop was already in my rotation, but now that i listened to this all the way thru, dare i say i’m an iggy pop FAN? Dare i say???

Loved: Some Weird Sin Liked: Lust for Life, The Passenger Grew on Me: Success Disliked: Turn Blue

Nice proto punk album.

These all sound like Rolling Stones b-sides but I love them.

The title track is kinda overrated in my opinion but afterwards the album gets really good. "The Passenger" has always been the stand-out to me. That song and others are absolutely dripping with David Bowie magic. Favorite track: The Passenger

7.5/10 2 Bowie productions quite close to each other, think his work might have been stronger in this than Transformer. Really nice album, bunch of good tunes with good energy. Some of it sounds extremely Bowie. Best: The Passenger

The Bowie influence is noticeable. Reminded me of TRex occasionally. It's a bit dated but still very enjoyable

Refreshing Garage Rock. Most well known is probably "Passenger" which I marked as one of my favourite song.

Iggy and Bowie? Sign me up. Only complaint is, at times, it’s a little TOO Bowie. But overall, when the balance is struck between Bowie’s dramatic flare and Iggy’s punk edge, it shines.

I recognize a lot of the rock and roll riffs and rhythms. This is a good album.

It all sounds pretty similar to me, which is perfectly solid for an album. Not a 5, but enjoyed a lot.

Iggy Pop second solo album. Lots of collaboration with David Bowie who wrote several of the songs, played keyboard on album and on tour, and did backing vocals. A Side is pretty epic. 4.8/5 B Side not so much. 3.8/5

Sixteen is fucking Insane, Lust for Life and The Passenger are good though. Neighbourhood Threat is his best song

It’s all momentum. The drums hit, the bass runs, and the voice just spits attitude. Bowie is all over this, but it's rougher, messier, less put together in the best way. Feels like something that belongs in a late-night dive bar. No fluff, no filler, just raw, driving rock.

Iggy Pop's debut solo album, The Idiot, is one of the most haunting albums in the history of rock music. it's chilly, mechanical and paranoid, reflecting a long period of stagnation in Iggy Pop's career after the Stooges broke up. I can't think of many other rock albums that sound like it, so it's a bit of a shame that Lust for Life retreats back towards a more typical rock sound. thankfully, David Bowie is in charge of most of the songwriting duties here, so this is still a pretty fun listen. Bowie had a tremendous instinct for setting Pop's voice in musical contexts that suited him; "The Passenger" is one of the best songs of the 1970s, bar none. "Sixteen" is one of those creepy, creepy songs I could never hear again and I'd never miss it. decent 7/10.

A good album, I liked Lust for Life and Passenger the most.

-it was good, but not as good as some other rock albums from the 70s IMO -I enjoyed several of the songs and would relisten to some of them, my favs were The Passenger, Tonight, and Turn Blue

Hell yeah man

Lots of fun songs. Iggy shows what he is capable of without the Stooges. The back half gets a little weirder and actually I loved that about it. The bops bop. It all sounds great.

Pretty dang catchy stuff.

I don't lust for iggy but the music was pretty good.

Not really listened to iggy pop before and this was cracking. Lust for life and passenger highlights with Bowies influence all over them

Well, after I reviewed that Yeah Yeah Yeahs album I didn't think I'd be tackling another entry in the "Hey, I know that album cover from ROCK BAND" case file so soon, but here we are. And unlike that Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, I can actually remember the song that got included in ROCK BAND — LEGO ROCK BAND, in this case. But before I get into that, lemme talk for a second about Iggy Pop. Honestly, he's another person I know more for his name and reputation than anything else. Y'know, he was, like, the frontman of The Stooges, I think? They had that album that was infamously purposefully mixed like total ass (or maybe it was the remix that was? I can't remember). I can't remember what I thought about it 'coz it's been way too long of a while. Beyond that, besides his random cameo in LEGO ROCK BAND besides Queen, blur and Spinal Tap, I can only recall his name from a Patton Oswalt bit about skinny jeans. That's really it. So that just leaves us with the one piece of music I'm actively aware of from Mr. Pop, "The Passenger". A few hours before I got to listening to this album I read somewhere that it was inspired by a Jim Morrison poem, and, like... Yeah, this reminds me a lot of The Doors. Just add some Manzarek-style keys and it wouldn't be too far off — like, from the swingin' bounce to even the vocals, it's already pretty much there. I really dig it. It's got a nice "la-la" hook. At any rate, compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this is a way better song I was introduced to through ROCK BAND than "Maps". And listening to the rest of the album, it turns out that "this reminds me of another artist" would be a small recurring thought. Take the title track, for instance; it sounded a lot to me like The White Stripes if Meg had been a more technically skilled drummer. Or take "Tonight" from later on. If I hadn't already known that David Bowie has his fingerprints all over this album, I would've been able to guess here. It was the first song where I noticed this nonspecific "Bowie" sound that I'd keep hearing throughout the rest of the record. I mean, supposedly this album is more strictly Iggy Pop's baby than the last album he and Bowie worked on (THE IDIOT), but not having yet heard that... Well, I don't think I really woulda been able to guess, y'know? Really, coming out of this, I don't really have a good idea what the "Iggy Pop sound" specifically is supposed to be. And maybe this is a bad album to try and find that out, but I'unno. All that said, however, I still liked this album a whole lot. I know it sounds like I damned it with the whole "nonspecific Bowie sound' remark, but that is legit something I like about this album. I won't lie and say it's not done incredibly well. Certainly, I got into it way quicker than I did the Bowie album that was released before this, LOW. This album is great poppy rock n' roll stuff. Like, gawd, the hard garage shuffle on the opening track is amazing, and "Turn Blue" is an incredible slow burn of a tune, where I don't even mind that it's six minutes. Follow that up with "Neighborhood Watch" and its low, bendy grumble of a guitar line at the end — goodness. Really, this thing is a solid 4 in my book. I do kinda wish I could've pinpointed something that was clearly "Iggy Pop," but I suppose if I wanted that I would've gone and blown my ears out with RAW POWER. For what this is, all garage-y and proto-punk and New Wave... I didn't go gaga over it, but I had a good time. There's nothing much more I really could've asked for. Well, that's two for two from the ROCK BAND case file. Can I go three for three? That's partially up to The Randomizer, I suppose... Gosh, imagine if it was a Bowie album. Could you imagine? It'd be like, "Gawd, this Randomizer sometimes... I swear."

Iggy + Bowie = A rocking album. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

I’m at a 4 – more of a 3.5 that’s getting bumped up to a 4, but a 4 nonetheless. Right from the opening percussion (which was 100% stolen by Jet when they did “Are You Gonna Be My Girl”), this album takes off and (for the most part) keeps stepping on the gas, except to ogle at some teenagers here and there. By far, those are the most awkward parts of the album, and stop it from approaching a 5 at all. When Iggy Pop (produced by David Bowie, who does an excellent job) isn’t drooling over sixteen year olds, the album usually hits a lot more than it misses, though the tank gets a little close to empty a few times. Warning lights, at least. This is punk music, with a bit of a poppier lean, and it’s the type of punk music I think I prefer – this is an interesting case study to get this & the Ramones back to back. I bounced off of the Ramones with a perceived feeling of “isn’t this just Blitzkrieg Bop 14 times”, and less admiration because the lyrics felt like an afterthought. Granted, that’s incredibly oversimplifying it, but I stand by my thought that the album wasn’t a very exciting experience for my over attentive ears. This, on the other hand, won me over despite sharing a lot of similar structural qualities from a musical standpoint. It won me over a bit more just because I think the tracks have a much better variance in styles, and the lyricism (when it’s not pedophilic-ish) just paints bigger, bolder pictures for my brain that really make each track feel important. Even when it’s broad, there’s something that feels kind of captivating – for example, what IS the sin in “Some Weird Sin”? Why does “The Passenger” choose to stay under glass, and why does he feel like he can claim all of the things he sees without ever truly interacting with it? Who IS the “Neighborhood Threat”? It’s not actually building up to some big climax, sure, but it just gives my brain more to think about & digest & truly interact with, and I appreciate that style. Granted, it’s far from perfect – I do think a few tracks go a bit long to the point of repetition (the last track in particular is beyond guilty of this, could’ve ended 2:34 in), and even I can only pull so much from my imagination to enhance some of these tracks. “Turn Blue” in particular didn’t earn that big bombastic ending it tried to give itself, even though I liked the track. It’s not a great album, hence the 3.5, but I enjoyed it enough (& I got really into the instrumentation on a few tracks) to the point where I think I’m justified in bumping it up to a 4. It could go down in the future, but this just clicked for me on a first listen. P.S.: I couldn’t figure out where to slide this in, so I’ll just say that I think this album uses the intensity of the percussion in a way that reminds me a lot of Daft Punk, and it’s partially what stopped a lot of the tracks from feeling too stale over time – simple production trick, but extremely effective when done the right way. If it weren’t for that, and other little Bowie-adjacent touches that keep the tracks fresh, I’d probably just be at a 3. Still, I feel good with the 4.

Some great songs and some throwaway trash

Very good album. I was previously familiar with the title track and The Passenger, but the whole album is worthwhile. Would listen again.

Well, this is clearly a David Bowie album but with the rock aspect of Iggy. A win for sure. Some classics like Lust for Life and The Passenger. Really enjoyed almost every song on this album and was all about the message here too. Fuck the detractors, live hard, rock on.

Surprisingly got really into this, would listen again and a real vibe

По мнению А: 4/5 По мнению С: 4/5 ИТОГОВАЯ ОЦЕНКА: 4/5 (21.01.2025)

Pretty good. Cool to hear progenitors of punk. I could hear the Bowie production too, without knowing Bowie did production for this record. The “obvious” standout track is The Passenger; just a good song. The less obvious standout for me though was Neighborhood Threat. Some genuinely funny moments on this album (“oh shit!”), and some dated lyrics. Good overall!

I didn't realise that Iggy Pop and David Bowie weren't the same person until a few years ago. Like a pseudonym. Bowie gave me the creeps, so I refused to listen to any Iggy Pop. As you do This was actually really good!! Not quite a 5 but a very very enjoyable album! Thank you to the generator for showing me what I've missed out on In the words of Shaq - I owe you an apology, I wasn't really familiar with your game 4 ⭐️

Almost slipped to a 3 star, because of some missteps in the layer half and the general ickiness of Sweet Sixteen. But, when it's good, it's real good.

Pretty perfectly straddles the line between punk and glam rock, with the often frantic energy of people trying not to do copious amounts of drugs. A largely solid listen, from the classics (Lust for Life, The Passenger), to deeper cuts that give a Velvet Underground feel (Neighborhood Threat), to catchy new wave / disco vibes (Tonight.) & while I'm not sure even Iggy Pop can get away with the dirty old man lyrics of 'Sweet Sixteen,' the only song that really felt like a swing and a total miss was 'Turn Blue.'

Day 17: Lust for Life - Iggy Pop. Iggy Pop is an icon in punk music, and this album is a collaboration with David Bowie, who was one of the greatest musicians to ever live. That alone somewhat warrants an inclusion in the "1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" album compilation. This album feels very "Rock 'n' Roll". It has the energy of punk music, and nicely-crafted music. Unfortunately, the music somewhat slipped off me. Personally, I'm not a fan of punk music. However, that is not to discredit the album at all. The Stooges were some of the most rocking artists to ever live. They contributed to the pioneering of punk rock music. I truly wish that I liked punk rock more than I actually do. I'm not even a fan of London Calling. Personal Enjoyment: 3/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 4/5.

Re-listen from 5 years ago. Still a good experience.

This album rules. Makes me want to roll around in broken glass and cover myself in peanut butter. I love the backup vocals, just sounds like they're having a blast. Success was the main discovery on this listen. I'm serious about wanting to sing karaoke with The Boys on backup.

Surprisingly good

Some bops

Great album. I had recently discovered it a while back and love it. The Passenger is one of my favorites. Good Stuff.

Enjoyed this one.

Megahitin ulkopuolellakin oikein kelpo rock-klassikko. 4/5

This album really impressed me. I think earlier on this list I had a Stooges album and that had one or two good songs but was a little too punky in general. This is so different it's almost like a put-on to show what he can really do to show people like me who put him in the punk box and maybe dismissed him too much too soon. A couple times I thought it kind of had a Bowie vibe and then saw he collaborated with him on this album, so I was relieved to know it wasn't an aggressive form of impersonation. Aside from a couple of songs that hit my ear wrong lyrically, this is a great classic that deserves to be on this list. Gave me a new respect for Iggy, who I'd previously only associated with his punk antics. Favorite track "The Passenger" 4/5

Excellent, in some ways contrasting with earlier efforts by the Stooges. I hear Bowie’s influence loud and clear.

pretty good, the obvious tracks are best, didn't realise how much involvement david bowie had on this album. Tonight, Success

Really good. Really catchy

Fantastic classic album. Greetings to Bowie also, who helped on a great part on this album.

Zeer goed album met de grootste hits van Iggy Pop. Een echte klassieker dus. Net geen 5 though. 4.4

Think I contemplated just about every rating for this album before finally settling on… 4/5. In the Bowie vs. Iggy conundrum, I’ve always come down on the side of the latter. When Bowie was churning out complete gash in the late 60s, Iggy and his Stooges were already light years ahead of the curve. But were it not for Bowie’s creative genius, Iggy’s career (along with his life) would have ended long ago. On this record, he wanted to take more of a leading role, and without Bowie’s hand-holding, you get a more mixed bag than on The Idiot. The singles are undeniable classics, but I think the standout track comes towards the tail end of the record in Neighbourhood Threat. The rest play like B-grade Bowie, and Iggy’s lyrical prowess was never anything to write home about and consequently doesn’t bring much to elevate them above the status of “fine”. At the end of the day, he’ll always be a problematic legend - *cough* “Sixteen” *cough*- and this record got him clean and healthy for another Stooges reunion. For that alone, this album deserves its plaudits.

Honestly surprised I had only heard one song off this album. Solid, would listen again.

I will always love this style of older punk rock.

Really enjoyed it was fun and uplifting

Pretty enjoyable, got a bit samey by the end but a few classics

Some great songs

Really enjoyed this one. Nice variety plus a touch of Bowie, what's not to like?

Really enjoyed the album. I obviously knew the 2 big hits but had never fully listened to the entire album before. There was a nice mix of punk and glam and a few songs really stood out. Great listen. would definitely listen again

Great album with nice variety I was also impressed with Iggy Pop as a leading man. Though not an amazingly technical singer, he brings rock n' roll energy. I also liked the last song which reminded me a lot of the Doors. Favorites: The Passenger, Sixteen, Fall In Love With Me Least Favorite: Turn Blue

Exceptional tracks from an album that sounds as fresh today as it did when it was first issued

Thought I disliked Iggy, but I think it was The Stooges I had a bad tat set for. This was pretty good all around, especially with Bowie writing a lot or most of the music (Iggy wrote lyrics) and playing keyboards. Nicely done.

It seems like The Idiot was more Bowie and this was more Iggy. Love Bowie…but this far surpasses The Idiot. 4.5

Love Passengers - such an epic track and along with Lust for Life really stand out on the album. There are a few other great tracks on the album - but unfortunately a couple of real stinkers like Turn Blue and the icky Sixteen spoil the party.

Oh this is so good! What a delight! It feels retro, but in a timeless way. Each song is very different, exploring a lot of different approaches and sounds. I can understand this being really influential. I'm gonna ignore that Sixteen is a little creepy.

ну він певно найліпший з усіх перший ще тож нормальний

While not every song on this album is a hit, it features a handful of tracks that are classics. It has a raw, stripped-down rock feel that adds great texture to the music. Produced by David Bowie during his Berlin Trilogy years, this album benefits from Bowie’s creative streak.

It's Iggy Pop. I like Iggy Pop.

Solid release. Sounds more like Iggy than The Idiot did, but still undeniably has the Bowie signature all over it. Not a bad thing, but it's still not the Stooges.

I didn’t know Bowie wrote some of the songs on this album, no wonder I liked it more than the Stooges stuff. Iggy Pop is still a bit annoying at times, but this is good for the most part.

Oh Iggy you funny looking ball bag! This is very good stuff. Prefer the solo to The Stooges. Can definitely tell Bowie was involved, some of them were very Bowiesque! Lust for Life and The Passenger were superb. Although I enjoyed the last 10 minutes a little less. Simpsons: They make a Trainspotting joke in the London episode with Lust for Life. Which frankly, doesn’t really work.

Really enjoyed it surprisingly as all the other Iggy and Stooges stuff I’ve heard I hated. Trailed off a bit at the end but solid.

Toimiva levy, solidii shittii

really cool, I kinda thought I wouldn't like it. instrumentals are quite varied and don't sound dated. Vocals sound like an early version of the strokes, especially drums on first song... Favorite song: Tonight - they are all good but this one is a whole step ahead to me. Overall around 7/10

VERY classic rock!

7/10 Theres highlights and lowlights Favourite Song=Turn Blue Least Favourite Song=Some Weird Sin

Great 'lose' sounding garage rock, but they sure ain't playing in Joe's garage.

Oh bello, c'è Passenger

Much prefer this Iggy Pop to the Stooges. Overall a great album.

Not bad! Pleasantly surprised!

Some great Bowie composed songs on here overall mostly beautiful in its rough stripped down sound.

Passenger is a banger

Enjoyed the beats

Day304 - a real rocker. i took off my shirt and sand along

Pigeon-holing Iggy Pop into the punk rock category is an injustice to how far he can stretch. On Lust For Life, it seems that he's taken a bit of influence from The Rolling Stones, Lou Reed, and Jim Morrison, and I can hear a lot of The Strokes here too, in lyrical delivery, guitar tone, backbeat, and general New Yorker vibes. There are some topics that didn't age well ("Sixteen", "Turn Blue"), but melodies and delivery are still catchy and edgy. Life is not the only thing for which Iggy lusts. Though I was surprised at how much I liked the first Stooges album I heard, I guess I still thought of that as a one-off, because again I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. No need to point out favorites; they all work together to make an enjoyable album that shows variation in approach while maintaining a bluesy dirty-rock theme.

This just clicks for me, the vibe and energy. In fact, it seems almost entirely compromised of vibes and energy, but it feels so unplanned and from the gut that there's something infectiously exhilarating in it.

Definitely Iggy's best work after Raw Power, and loving hearing the Bowie input again. Couple all time great tracks, too. 4.5

I'm always somehow surprised by how good Iggy Pop's albums remain

So much better than the other Iggy 77 release on this list. Passenger is excellent

A perfectly named album. The feeling of energy and growl throughout is perfect. Trainspotting thoroughly planted the opening track into my generations zeitgeist but i think the passenger is the star of the show. It looses a star for some end of album mediocrity but that was fun!

Listened to this while playing Isofarian Guard. I enjoyed this album whole lot more than I thought I would. Some instantly recognizable classics...and the songs that were new to me were also great!

great album

It's a weird answer for me... It's a good album but some songs are clearly under par. Some songs can get pretty repetitive and long but I guess that's all part of the proto-punk movement. Maybe I was just not in the mood... Maybe that's it. Favourite Song - Neighborhood Threat Least Favourite Song - Sixteen (or Tonight)

Why is Iggy Pop looking at me like that? I can't describe the emotion on his face. Is he happy? Sad? I can't tell. Whatever. It doesn't matter. All that matters is whether or not I liked Lust for Life. So, did I? Yes. I did. I think this album's really good. There's a lot to like about this album. The sound is great. It's just a very strong rock sound. It's decently varied, and also stands out alongside other iconic and unique albums of the time period. Comparing this to other 1977 albums like Marquee Moon and "Heroes" doesn't make a ton of sense, but the fact that all of these albums are as great as they are really shows how great this time period was for music. Speaking of "Heroes," I really like the presence of David Bowie on this album. More albums should just have David Bowie involved. Iggy's vocals are solid. The writing is really only bad in one song. The production and pacing are excellent. This is a great album. There are others I like more, but that doesn't mean Lust for Life is bad, because it isn't. High 4/5.

还可以吧

The strumming is a little repetitive in some of the songs, but overall, I enjoyed the rock sound. Not really fan of the talking instead of singing in Turn Blue. I can definitely listen to album multiple times, and saved most of the album for later listening.

Rolling Stones meets David Byrne meets David Bowie.

Brilliant. Worthy. Music outside its specific time yet stamps a marker worth experiencing onto the later 1970s.

so much Bowie here

Rating: 8.5/10 Very catchy album that also displays Iggy Pop's quirkiness. Great performances and production.

How can you not love him?

Lust for Life always gets me fucking goinggggg

Set the tone for a lot of grunge. Have listened before and will listen again

#372. Man, Iggy Pop is an ugly son of a bitch, and every time I look at a picture of him I regret having done so. That doesn't really have anything to do with my review, I just thought I'd put it out there. I did quite like this album though. I've never really listened to any of his music intentionally before, but it's liked it for the most part 4/5: fun

Big fan. Fun, early punk rock. The Passenger slaps.

Don’t remember specifics now but know I enjoyed it.

Albumi #70, 06.10.2024 Iggy Popin legendaarinen kakkosalbumi vuodelta 1977. Albumi on Iggy Popin ja David Bowien Berliini-kauden tuotoksia. Tämä teos kuuluu jokaisen musiikista ymmärtävän levyhyllyyn.

7.5/10

Classic Iggy, decent album although not a huge amount of variety but you don’t need it. Punchy, some great riffs and it knocks you around a bit. Good album.

So I had only listened to Iggy Pop as part of The Stooges before, and this is really not that at all. This basically sounds like a Bowie album (which makes sense, because it was his second collaboration album with Bowie, he wrote most of the songs on this). In my mind Iggy Pop is the guy with with the punk sound and his shirt off doing crazy things on stage, but this is a completely different thing. I mean, look at the cover. Honestly, it's really good though. "Lust For Life" is a super catchy opener and it stays strong throughout. There's a few misses here and there, but it's really consistently strong with a few great tracks ("The Passenger" seems to be his biggest solo hit, and it's great). I really enjoyed this one, very solid top to bottom. Favorite song: The Passenger Other: Lust For Life, Some Weird Sin, Tonight, Turn Blue, Neighborhood Threat, Fall In Love With Me 10/4/24

Fun, classic album!

There's too much I wanna say about this album! Quintessential garage rock meets punk (proto-punk?) with an influence of Bowie musicality (and imagery of West Berlin). It's messy, it's crisp, it's great. And to top it off, the album cover of a smiling Iggy Pop with greasy bands is iconic. Favorite song(s): Some Weird Sin, Success Least favorite: Turn Blue Knew before? Yes

Enjoyed this one

The Idiot's glue-huffing little brother...which is to say it's fun and good but a bit inessential when Bowie's actual Berlin trilogy exists 8/10

It’s pretty good. I don’t think it’s worth five stars, but I like it.

Solid, energetic album with some really high-quality songs. Having a tough time placing this as at the moment as a 4 or a 5. Probably just on the 4 side of 4.5

The song writing and production was very stylish, other than the distorted vocals it felt very modern if that makes sense.

Such a great intro, Lust of Life, is so instantly recognizable. Classic.

# Album Name: Lust for Life # Artist: Iggy Pop # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: A couple of classic tracks on here. Lust for life is iconic. It always reminds me of trainspotting and edinburgh. However, in its own right, its a song full of magic. So good. Same goes for passenger. The rhythm guitar is just iconic. The melody is amazing, the lyrics are spot on for it. Great tune. These two are iconic tracks. Love the Rhythm and drum beat on sixteen. Not so sure about those lyrics though... Some weird sin was a real grower for me. Great rhythm and dual vocals. The album struggles to hit the same heights as LFL and passenger. These two songs create a really high bar. However, most other tracks are real growers. It took a few listens to grip me. But im glad i stook with it. I like iggys style and vocals so it was worth it. # Top Tunes: lust for life and passenger. Other notable songs were sixteen, weird sin, tonight and fall in love with me. # Would I listen to it again? Definitely.

Stands the test of time

Trodde jag skulle svimma och dö när jag hörde Lust For Life första gången. Så jävla bra låt. The Passenger är också fantastisk. Hela skivan är underbar rock-punk-pop Värd att lyssna på många gånger om. Precis som hans första The Idiot. Riktigt bra skiva det också. Kanske är det Bowies förtjänst men Iggy Pop är cool och har en skön röst. Match made in heaven Bowie och Pop.

Det är jämnbra men the passenger och lust for life sticker ut. Men hela skivan håller rätt hög nivå rakt igenom. Kul!

The Passenger är ju enastående bra och tycker denna håller riktigt hög kvalitet rakt igenom (Sixteen är den enda svaga låten). Mycket mer finess och välproducerat än The Stooges. Stark fyra.

Iggy and Bowie’s stint in Berlin yielded the some of the best music of both of their careers. The title track always makes me think of Trainspotting.

Some Weird Sin, great track.

surprisingly good!

Chulo.

Raw rock and roll sound. Enjoyable enough. Reading about iggy pop was more entertaining than the album.

Enjoyable. Fun beats and a David Bowie-esque voice.

Catchy and easily accessible post-punk music without ever really coming off as a "watered-down" version of the genre's sounds. I mean yeah, you have a song like 'Success' which sounds like a go-lucky 60s pop song that would've absolutely dominated the charts re-invented for the post-punk era. But you also have experimental cuts like the drug-addled rambling-driven 'Turn Blue'. With the exception of the poorly aged (and gross at the time) 'Sixteen', I enjoyed pretty much every song here. I generally enjoy Iggy's deeper vocal style here, like on 'Tonight' and the masterpiece that is 'The Passenger'. The latter sounds like a mix of David Bowie (who had many ties to this album, especially given the fact that 'Station to Station', which I always found had many similarities to this album musically and thematically, was released around the time of this album) and Jim Morrison-styled vocals. Well, that's probably because Bowie does backup vocals here and the lyrics were inspired by a Morrison poem. Again, easily accessible, fun, and "poppy" post-punk is sort of what draws me to this album. Authenticity is not sacrificed though - I mean it's Iggy Pop, one of the genre's pioneers, he couldn't be inauthentic even if he tried.

Enjoyed each of these songs, although ‘Sweet 16’ was a bit gross.. all in all a classic 70s brit rock album 4/5
