Back in the day, when music was soulful, magical and sexy...

One of the best soul albums of all time in my eyes. Every song is given so much room to breathe. The bass in particular is so badass.

T’es bien redécouverte

J’ai beaucoup aimé cette voix grave portée par un funk élastique comme du caramel. Je réécouterai

Great voice and great album. Interesting panning choices.

Nice strings and guitar... quite soulful and groovy

One woman and walk on by are my favourite from the album. Definitely soothing, it feels like a sunny day with a gentle breeze.

Most people would say "Tom Cruise" when asked "who's your favourite mental scientologist?", but for me, it will always be Isaac Hayes. Every second of this album is incredible.

I really enjoyed this album. Listened 3 times and it sounds timeless. "One woman" is an absolute masterpiece.

This was very good! I would get it on vinyl. Great find. Right up my alley

4.5 - This was really a surprise, really like this. Deffo going to check out more

So nice. 4 tracks that all deliver vibes. The opener is particularly iconic. Though now all I hear on top is Beyoncé’s “6 Inch”. This is great music. 4.6/5

generational stuff mister hayes!

This album was great! I was grooving the whole time.

Long songs. But amazing

5 stars. Great album

Production: 5/5 Lyricism: 4/5 Sound: 5/5 Enjoyment: 4.5/5 Overall: 4.6/5

Best bald man album ever, classic amongst the classics

Wow incredible. 4 epic tracks that showcase how to take a soul track and expand it to 10 min long epics that don't lose intensity throughout. Considering this Is 1969, it deffo has been a key influence for the progression of soul, funk, even hiphop. Hayes is hypnotic throughout. Overall perfect album that redefined the sound of soul music

Beautiful Gorgeous 10/10

So smooth, so soulful

I keep forgetting g how bad ass Isaac Hayes is.

Sexxxxxxxxoooo

4.5? le doy 5 igual porque uf

This album feels ahead of its time for the 1960s (though I’m certainly no music historian). An incredibly delightful listen. While I didn’t love the 8.5 minute spoken work portion, Isaac Hayes more than made up for it with 37 minutes of pure smooth soul.

1969. Progressive Soul. 9/10 1.Walk On By Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic / One Woman / By The Time I Get To Phoenix

I not a big of soul fan at all but this is an album with massive personality and style. I love a long song, and this is quite a masterclass of subtly building guitar, string and brass arrangements, and combing with some moody vocals. And the range of styles really grabbed me. Starts with a soul psych acid rock beauty and Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic might be the most subtlest funky track I’ve ever heard. And the last track just makes it impossible not to get into the story, and slaps out with some great arrangements, particularly love that the Hammond is being flogged so much you can hear the keys being slammed. Fair to say this album was a very cool surprise.

such a perfect album, hayes’ walk on by is a pysch-soul all time classic, hyperbolic… is just such a ridiculous awesome song.. one woman is the beautiful calm before the storm that is the sprawling nearly 20 minute epic that is also the best version of by the time i get to phoenix. a flawless album f’reals

Not a single boring moment and the man is telling a story at one point. Impressive.

It's honestly hard to believe that this was released in 1969 because it could honestly be released today and sound completely relevant and modern. The beats, the instrumentation, the vocals, and everything in between are all solid. The strings and horns on One Woman are incredible.

I originally listened and reviewed this seven months ago: "Walk on by is such a classic sample, I never even knew this was the original record. Honestly this album was so good until the last song, which dragged on with making random noises. I'd give this a 4 if it wasn't for the last song (which ironically is a quarter of the whole album) being such a letdown. First 3 songs rock though and this album is definitely worth a listen." Not sure what I was smoking, because after a second listen, this is fucking unreal. I must have been listening to the whole remaster, and not Walk On By to By The Time I Get To Phoenix. This album is a masterpiece holy fuck.

45 minutes for 4 songs sure is a flex (especially when one of them clocks in at just under 19 minutes) I'm actually kinda shocked at how much I loved this. the production for these songs has a genuinely timeless feel, which is a statement I think gets thrown around about a lot of albums but if you gave this to someone who somehow had no clue who Isaac Hayes is I think they would have a tough time piecing together when this was made, let alone the fact that it's more than 50 years old. I imagine a lot of people would be put off by the duration of each song, especially the opening of 'By The Time I Get to Phoenix' which is essentially just a 8 minute monologue with some light instrumentals along the way. But if you have the patience for a much slower burn than normal there is plenty to love in both the cool stretches of calm and the bombastic climaxes of each track

I only knew Hayes as Chef from South Park and he had a few hit records. Who knew the "Chocolate Salty Balls" guy made such an awesome album? "Hot Buttered Soul" is the best soul album I've heard since Stevie Wonder's "Talking Book." There's nothing I hate about it. What an amazing end to the week! 5 stars for "Hot Buttered Soul".

Where has this album been all my life?? By the Time I Get to Arizona was my playlist pick from Public Enemy's Apocalypse 91...and the inspiration for that song title came from Chuck D's appreciation of Isac Hayes's version of By the Time I Get to Arizona (written by Jimmy Webb, made popular by Glen Campbell). The Public Enemy Song is a protest of the state of Arizona so it's a completely different thing, but these are the kinds of rabbit holes I love to go down. But what a fucking cover from Isac Hayes. He reimagined the whole song, created a backstory, and then he gives you permission to step into his flow state bubble for nearly 19 minutes. This is a delight of an album start to finish.

I really really really got into this. Possibly one of the highest compliments I can pay this is that, despite our generation's identification of Isaac Haye's as the voice of Chef, I never once thought of South Park. This album could easily find its way up there with 'Boards of Canada' - an album to create an atmosphere - that I could play over and over. Although I may edit out the Phoenix preamble.

By the time I get to phoenix could be the greatest song of all time

Walk On By is smoother than Isaac’s freshly waxed dome. It’s Soul, Sphagetti Western, Delicious.

Next time I’m whipping up biscuits, I know who I want on the butter knife. Incredible album, definitely one of my favorites we’ve had so far. So groovy and cool, Walk On By is a masterclass. Maybe could have cut down on the spoken word portion of By The Time I Get To Phoenix, but honestly I don’t mind it. Easy easy 5

This album is incredible. The horns, and strings, mixed with the funk and soul and psych guitar make for a really fun and interesting album.

Another incredible record. I discovered this album after listening to a podcast with Jim James, and while this album really doesn't sound anything like My Morning Jacket, its become one of my favorite soul albums of the era. It's kind of over the top with sex, cheating, and affairs. And the music is kind of always going to a new level of high, but its so damn good. Walk on By is sad and longing in the lyrics, but epic and movement in the music. Its trippy and psychy but also heavy and almost like a movie soundtrack. Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic is a psych rock masterpiece. Its all over the place, its dancy, its groovy, its jazzy. One Woman is sad and sexy, and probably the least over the top on the album, which is a good break before you get into the epic of When I Get to Phoenix, which is another masterpiece. And the fact that half of the album are covers that he just turned into his own thing?? So rad. This record really has everything you would want. Its one of my absolute favorites, and I'm so happy I found it. I revisit this one often.

Surprised this isn't ranked higher, it's a 5 all the way.

That “Walk on By” is impeccable.

I like it, I like it a lot. It's one of his I bought when it came out.

Easy my favorite album until now, just pure art

Smooth soul! 9/10

The true power of this app struck me with this album, I got the idea of it before I started, but the idea that here is something I would never have listened to without the app struck me. Great album skip first 8 minutes of last song though, it's true what everyone says about 1969!!!!!

teary eyed fucking

This has some of the best funk/soul tracks, bar none.

Really, really good. This is not my cup of tea as far as genres go, but this is universally just likable soul music. You can see how this album influenced a lot of stuff that came after, even though it's very representative of its time with the instrumentation.

Perfect for a relaxation in the evening

‘Hot Buttered Soul’ is 45 minutes of hypnotic build up, and simmering tension and release. It’s a symphonic musical orgasm. An RnB masterpiece. The ultimate psychedelic-soul album.

A really superb album all the way through. It feels brand new, despite being from the 60's! I'm pretty sure I have heard samples of this album before, but the original songs were a very pleasant surprise. Favorite track: "Walk On By"

I know nothing about this. I'm sure I heard the name Isaac Hayes, but can't really associate it with anything. It starts amazing, the fuzzy intro guitar on Walk On By cuts straight to my soul. This ten minute jam encompasses everything that’s great and beautiful about this album. It’s catchy yet jammy and open. Heart wrenching yet uplifting and danceable. I think my main takeaway from this project so far is that I’m a latent soul and funk fan.

Only four songs?? But I want MORE. What a great lil album though

"Walk On By" is just a stone jam and easily one of the greatest leadoff tracks on an album, period. The Bar-Kays provide excellent playing throughout. Great album.

Walk On By, immediately it’s cinematic. His vocals are so smooth and grounded. “Make me believe you never see the tears I cry, Do me a favour and walk on by” is heart wrenching. I feel like there’s so much going on that all work together so well it hard to pick things out of the production. If a song this long should get boring and it just keeps building, the really high pitched guitar i don’t like but the drums are magical. Hyper……, is suchhh a groove. The mumbleish singing is fabulous. Like hard to make out the words but it doesn’t matter cos the soul is there. The chorus of women saying this insane title word is beautiful. “My heart is on strike” such a brilliant line. I think half way i just heart him say “dig the groove” and i’m gonna be so honest I am feeling like there’s main character while walking to my gym class rn. The piano is simple but so necessary. This music cannot be picked apart, mostly cos i don’t have the knowledge to but it is a whole. One woman, oh beautiful, hoping my man feels this way about me damnn. oh hold on he’s cheating :0 that is sick Hayes, hope u sorted it out. This is a stunning song tho. So precise and particular with the choices of the arrangement. I hope it’s not written about true events but i guesss I’ll personally forgive him, because the musics too good. By The Time, love does make the world go round. I love this talking explanation, just symbols in the back. His voice is such a boom, the little singing in between the spoken story are stunning. The strings come in perfectly obviously. The yearning in this song is palpable. I love the trumpet far back in the mix. The outro is sad and triumphant simultaneously. What an artist. I would never chose to listen to a 45 min album of 4 songs. Because I would assume it’s over indulgent and cocky. But this is well constructed and beautifully played. It has to be a 5.

I'm so glad I saw the Stax documentary series before revisiting this record. It provides so much incredible context for this masterpiece or an album.

Superb soul. Generated this album on 1/20/25, Martin Luther King day, and the day of Trump’s second inauguration. Insane and incredibly disturbing that we’re doing this AGAIN. Finding some solace in the dulcet tones of Isaac Hayes.

1/20/25. First time diving into Isaac Hayes, this music is completely up my alley even if its older. Will always love that funk and soul sound. Didn't even realize most of the tracks are 8+ minutes I was enjoying them so much.

Hayes almost makes the audicity and ambition of a 4 track album, with the 2nd shortest song clocking in at 9 minutes, look easy. Soulful but groovy, taking you to church--but the preaching's about infidelity and love, ahead of its time and timeless. A classic I'm glad to get exposed to through this exercise.

I could listen to this all day

This one's a great masterpiece. Both starts and ends with 10/10 compositions. "Walk On By" turned out to be the source of the instrumental part of one of my favourute tracks. Outstanding feeling of music, deep emotion, beautiful spoken word in the last track. This recording is exceptional and it can be felt throughout the 45-munute disc that you are listening classic stuff.

gorgeous. soo gorgeous. I was so happy to hear By The Time I Get To Phoenix again as the single edit because this track blew me away the first time. warm and inviting, and quite modern sounding for a 1969 album

Isaac Hayes could lather my soul with hot butter after listening to this. Love a long song that keeps me entertained. These two-minute pump-and-dump Ariana grande songs today can’t make me nut like hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic can.

No notes 💯💯🔥🔥

Fabulous

Masterpiece, that has been sampled so many times 5/5

Smooth soul tingled with funk for a cold day. Amazing mixing.

It's hot, it's buttery, and it's soulful. The title of this album checks out. It features long and eventful tracks. The cover art of this album is rather interesting. :)

What a fuckin masterpiece

Amazing album, instrumental groove on second track was the highlight. Enjoyed it thoroughly!

What an incredible album, listened to it 3 times, what a crying shame he was brainwashed by Scientology, to think of the stuff he would have released if he didn’t have a stroke 🥺

I didn't know soul could be progressive/psychedelic. Now I know, and it has made my life a bit better.

What's so important in your lives busy brains that you can't spare 7 or 8 minutes for Isaac to talk about love and the song he's going to lay on you. For shame. I can't be the only one who finds it hard not to hear Ghostface's urgent pleas at the start of Walk On By.

Stunning album and astounding to think that this came out in 1969. It is such a jump from Isaac Hayes writing and production for other Stax artists, amazing though many of the resulting tracks were. Only four songs, one of which is growling, distorted funk of "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic", another the good but relatively forgettable "One Woman". It is the other two tracks which make this album essential - covers of Bacharach and David's "Walk On By" and Jimmy Webb's (Glenn Campbell's...) "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", the former just over 12 minutes, the latter 18:42 - over 8 minutes before the recognisable part of the song starts, Isaac rapping, free-styling, telling a story to introduce the narrative of the song. Amazing stuff - orchestral strings, fuzz guitar, soul choirs. Unmissable.

Hell yeah. I knew my funk/soul was way behind when I started this project and doing this helped me to expand this. 9/10

a classic, the best soul album i’ve ever heard and crazy that it came out so early

very nice

What a surprise! Groovy and good - this is a repeater!

Fantastic. The balls to hold one chord on an organ for 10 minutes and just talk over it. And it's still brilliant. This version Walk On By is THE version. They don't make em like this anymore.

I am most definitely up for a twelve minute version of Walk On By. Didn't feel nearly that long. I also had no problem with the extended spoken word intro to By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

Isaac may have been a Scientologist cult weirdo, but the man can sing. Soul music at it's finest.

It's a masterpiece of soul-funk.

Walk on By is one of histories great recordings. I highly recommend giving this one another chance if it isn't connecting.

Brilliant.

Aaaaaaa kakav melem za uši nakon Radioheada. Kako je ovo dobro. Kakva gruvčina, kakav ses, predivno. 🫶🏻 Ove orgulje su predivne. Ojme druga stvar - najs! Al ga pegla brate. Fino bome, iako moram priznati da su mi ove laganije stvari u trenucima postajale malo dosadne, ali svejedno me opuštalo i pasalo mi je. 5/5, 9/10

Groove world championship winner right here. This shit bumps.

Classic, not traditionally my cup of tea but enjoyed

Day 60 - Nov 1, 2024 Butter to my ears. 5/5

Sexy funky smooth

That’s gotta be the best 18 minute song I’ve heard. This brother is smooth, this album is smooth and it just sounds pleasant to the ears. Great for an early morning ride to work, a tremendous way to start the day.

Holy shit

Love this album. A classic for sure

Impossibly fabulous. 5/5

You know it's five stars when I'm sad that the an hour long album is over. The perfect soul album. The singing is amazing but the instrumentals are perfection. Never heard of this album before but it is one of the best on this list.

Fucking awesome

so good at worldbuilding that it creates a whole backstory for an already existing soul standard and its one of the most hypnotizing experiences u can have listening to a record. hayes and the bar-keys go absolute god mode finding every single possible bit of groove and emotion to be fleshed out in a mere four songs to create something so overwhelming im a lil at a loss for words even having heard this a while back and sort of knowing what to expect. idk how often id even be in the mood for this but what an accomplishment man. south park will pay for its crimes

Beautiful at times.

This record is just so damn cool. The production quality is mind blowing for the age of the album, and it really holds up in the modern age. I think the opening track genuinely deserves the 12 minutes of run time it was allowed. It’s a beautiful version of “Walk on By” The second track, which I will not attempt to spell, is just cool and groovy and everything you’d ever want from Mr. Hayes. The string section on “One Woman” fits in so nicely, it’s as close to a perfect r&b song as I can imagine. I’m not entirely convinced that “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” needed to be 18 minutes, and I say that as a prog metal fan. It’s a great song, but I did find it a little difficult to get through the entire thing. It’s hard to imagine giving this record anything less than the 5* it deserves. Isaac Hayes at his best.

Lovely. Splendid even.

So much anguish, so much groove, so much soul. "Walk On By" and "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" are such fantastic songs and the way they have been expanded and reimagined here is some kind of magic covers rarely accomplish. I don't know what else can be said about this album that hasn't been said before... iconic. *chefs kiss* 9/10

i liked

Great album and the first I've heard of Isaac Hayes, although I have seen the movie Shaft which I believe he made the original theme for. Delicious tracks with a scary run time, but they work so well. Hard to believe this album is over 55 years old!

There's me thinking I didn't like soul music

Very nice

Amazing album. Have been listening to this for the past decade.

Very soulful.

true soul music, walk on by is electric

Away from the soul and r&b writings of Stax Records in the ‘60s, this record likely resonates with the avid hip-hop head, record collector or producer as being at one of the many cornerstones of sampling throughout hip-hop music. On this record, you’ll hear the original samples for ‘Warning’ by The Notorious B.I.G, ‘Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos’ by Public Enemy. Samples that allowed for these guys to flawlessly showcase their lyrical prowess. Nevertheless, in an era where 1:59 is an acceptable running time for a single in the charts, ‘Hot Buttered Soul’ emerges as the remedy. ‘Soul’ and ‘feel’ a bit a few things that can neither be encapsulated or condensed when it comes to music, and no one individual knows that better than Isaac Hayes. From the opening of ‘Walk On By’ right the way down to ‘By The Time I Get To Phoenix’, you can tell that Hayes meant every last note, let alone every last word he contributed towards this album.

Hot buttered soul Great band w/ the bar kays. Really liked the bass playing. Walk on by was cool His voice his great. I thought the spoken word was a bit long but it made me more invested in the story and lyrics.

Love this record. The long form songs are kind of unique and work so well with this vibe.

Любите себя

Was debating between 4 or 5, as I'd probably give it 4.5, but fuck it, it'll probably get to a 5 on further listens. And I'll definitely be listening again. Favorite track: Walk on By

Loved it wish it was longer

Soul sublime. Brilliant.

Love this album. Started listening to this 20 years ago and still revisit often. I think it’s Isaac Hayes at his best. Lush production and prototype soul album that allowed for evolution of ‘soul sound’ from Motown into a looser more expressive sound. Walk on and Phoenix are so great.

Right from the jump this is an AMAZING headphone album. The layering of sound, the organ and guitar competing in seperate channels, and the ebb and flow of dynamics in Walk on By is just an unbeatable sonic experience. The party continues through Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic, then Isaac slows everything down for side B, into what can only be described as his patented "fucking music". The man is a deserved legend and this release is a perfect example of why.

Stunning album. Definitely recognized some spots where this has been sampled. I lost track of time in a good way with this one. Groovy and soulful sonic waves to surf on. That voice is smoooooth. Absolutely worth many listens.

Awesome!

What happened to Stax to have instigated this album in is tragic. This album is anything but. The instrumentation is better described as orchestration which competes with the likes of Ravel.

I didn't want to listen to an album today. I went on Spotify and saved the first song so I could listen at a later date. I accidentally started the track, and was completely entranced. Listened to the whole album. Masterpiece. Some songs are *a little* bloated, and could have been trimmed. But as a huge Pink Floyd fan, it does not bother me. Apart from that, this album is flawless.

Old school R&B, nice

I wonder what they're considering an "album" since this one is just a few songs. But damn, Walk On alone can go toe-to-toe with most full albums on this list. Another round of hot buttered soul plz

Chef makes 39 seconds of dialogue last 8 minutes

Impossibly fabulous. Only Sir Isaac Hayes could pull this off. His version of Walk On By is fucking brilliant. 5/5

Phenomenal

Some days you 'discover' music that blows your mind. I'm 55 years late to the party here. It's four tracks long, in about an hour. One is a Dionne Warwick cover. Every track is worth it's length.

To be fair, the 9 minute spoken work intro to By The Time I Get To Phoenix fucks, as does the rest of the song with it’s gorgeous cinematic strings. Actually, all of this album sounds cinematic. Those strings man, I don’t really associate strings with Soul before Disco. This makes it work. Fuck it, this is a 5

This man sweat out more soul than I’ve ever had in my whole life. And one of the coolest voices I’ve ever heard.

Ruglaður

This guy is absolutely brilliant, you can encapsulate this album into a category of its own. Absolutely timeless

4.5 rounded up. Isaac Hayes' version of "Walk On By" is a legendary classic that still sounds fresh and relevant. The other songs are good, very experimental but enjoyable all the way through. Sexy and wildly inventive.

that fucking guitar in walk on by holy shit

delicinha de album

Bedroom music

This had no right to go as hard as it did.

Smooth with a good beat, enjoyed!

Definitely influenced Portishead, just four great soul jams!

Deeply emotional and soulful.

What a baller album. Probably one of my favourite discoveries since starting this challenge. Hayes' voice is lush and commanding, and he's accompanied by some really gorgeous production and orchestration behind him. I particularly like the last track with how this very bare bones instrumentation goes from unsettling to much more grandiose and beautiful. Best track: By the Time I Get to Phoenix Worst Track: Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic

Incredible stuff, not really a fan of the nearly 9 minute story on the last track but the rest is SO good it makes up for it

As smooth and soulful as it gets! More evidence that 1969 may be the greatest year of music.

it’s chef!

This is amazing. How have I not listened to this?

Wasn't enthusiastic about this until I read what it was. As a sucker for a long song which grows and twists, I'm in heaven here. Also I thought I'd heard all the banging covers of Walk On By.

Captivating and soulful, holds up well despite its age

one of the all-time best. amazing!

Love me some Isaac Hayes.

Four tracks, three absolute gems. "One Woman" is fine, but it's both the shortest and most mundane cut in what is a crazy album elsewhere, especially when it comes to textures and arrangements, all deftly handled by Hayes and his cast of stellar musicians. Recently, I've had a few albums on this app in which cover versions of other people's songs play an important part (LPs by Dion, Blood Sweat And Tears and Trio), and all of those were at least somewhat unconvincing as a fully-embodied artistic statement. *Hot Buttered Soul* feels very different in that regard. Because it displays a mastery that this sort of record mostly containing covers rarely reaches I love the fact that the old schmaltzy Bacharach / David standard "Walk On By" opening this record is barely recognizable, for instance. As I love the notion that this smoooooth version of the song feels very much like an elder brother to Hayes' "Ike's Rap II" (famously sampled by Portishead and Tricky). Hayes savours very moment here, and so does the listener. "Hyperbolicsyllable...", the only "original" composition in this album, is a thing of wonder as well. Sensual and groovy, thanks to its killer bassline and its thick, moody instrumentation. And a composition which is a testament to Hayes' songwriting skills. After all, the man knew a thing or two about that, since he co-wrote Sam And Dave's "Soul Man". Even if what we have here is a very different animal, opening the way to the "progressive soul" subgenre... Finally, "By The Time I Get To Arizona" is another unrecognizable cover--a version of a sad country song I had never heard about before. Needless to say, this version (which probably inspired the title of Public Enemy's "By the Time I Get To Arizona") beats the original out of the park. With this 18-minute tour de force about a couple breaking up, Hayes is not merely groovy here, he becomes fully epic--"Black Moses" indeed, or maybe "Black Homer". After a long spoken-word introduction setting you in the right mood and explaining the stakes of the proper tune about to follow, Hayes' deep voice propels you to another dimension, supported by cinematic orchestral arrangements --those lush, lush strings! Those sudden blasts of horns!. Man oh man, what a treat! Buying this record right away. 4.5/5 for the purposes of this list, rounded up to 5. Which translates to a 9.5/10 grade for more general purposes (5+4.5) Number of albums left to review: 227 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 333 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 197 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 250

Ass blasting.

Great stuff.

Excellent vibes and production. Really enjoy the vocals as well.

I think I gave this record on vinyl to a buddy of mine at the radio station I worked at. Huge mistake as this is definitely a classic. Pretty cool sounding soul record. Pretty experimental feeling too having such long songs but the arrangements of a full band plus some orchestral elements really add to the vibe. If you pay attention you can appreciate all the details or you can just let it play for the general vibe and it's good both in an hypnotic trancey state or a mood enhancer. One woman being a beautiful love song. Walk on by being a killer opener. The second song which I can't remember the full name feeling inspiring to that outkast album but being a jaunty piano track. A crazy "by the time I get to phoenix" cover. This album is the definition of not feeling cool enough to listen to it.

soul at its best. really no point in giving this less than a 5

Very cool. The use of full orchestra is so muscular here you'd have to believe that this was a time when music could really change the world. There's simply no other reason for that kind of intensity.

Only 4 song, but one is 12 minutes and one is 19 minutes and the whole album is fantastic. The tension, build, and release of each piece is masterful.

Very niceeeee

There's a spiritual nature to Isaac Hayes' records that just leave me floored every time, contemplating conversion to Scientology, and Hot Buttered Soul might be the best example of that. It's ironic that I already played this independently from the challenge earlier this week, because it'd been a while since I listened to it in full, and it really is *that* good. I used to listen to it while writing college papers, because it's excellent background vibe music, but you can also fully engage with it and find something new and rewarding to fixate on. You could argue that the track length, detail, and the singularity of this album are a sort of Achilles Heel, as they're strengths to the album proper but weaknesses if you want a more casual listen, but I wouldn't. No other 18-minute song in the history of recorded music makes me sit my ass down faster. The fact that 75% of this album is cover songs is crazy, because this is cohesive as hell, an Artistic Statement™️ if I've ever seen one. While I think it may be just outside my personal Top 100, there's a magic to this record that I can't deny. It's essential to a whole half of American music history in a way that I can't understate, and it holds all the allure I'm sure it did upon release 55 years ago.

Fantastic, some of the best Soul music I've heard. I'll definitely be coming back to this.

When you don't really notice or care how long some of the songs are, shows how engaging it is. I really liked the ambition, the cinematic nature, and the psychedelic touches of this album. The backing band is very solid. Also, I loved finding what would later become the sample used on Public Enemy's 'Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos.'

Like this a lot. Walk on by - very nice.

I already love this album. This walk on by is simply one of the best pieces of music.

What an album. The arrangement on Walk On By is stunning. Not many artists could pull off an album that’s book-ended with 13 and 18 minute tracks, but the black Moses does it in style here. The source of many hip-hop samples. So soulful.

So good

Above all, the music slaps and you get treated to extended jams of tight grooves. One of the highlights is the composition of the band and the added orchestral touches, it is a consistent sound throughout the album, and is perfectly balanced for the music. “Walk on by” (apparently a cover?) is a stunner. 12 minutes fly by. The extended jam has some great interplay between all of the musicians. “Hyperbolicsyllabicssesquedalymistic” - what a mouthful. It’s a bit of a sonic shift when the track opens, but is still solid despite the silliness of the title. Toward the middle/end of the track, the band settles into another delightful extended jam that really brings it home in its final crescendos. “One Woman” slows things down for, at first, what seems like a heartfelt love song, but is actually about a man torn over his infidelity. I can’t really connect, but the music is sweet and the backing vocals are on point. “By the time I Get to Phoenix” let the man speak - he needs 8:45 to set up the song he wants to sing, which is going to be another 10 minutes of a fucking sick cover song. I get that it might be divisive or controversial to have such a long intro/setup, but overall the song comes together beautifully.

We could use all sorts of adjectives to describe this work, but honestly, "Hot", "Buttered", and "Soul" are the most accurate. Isaac Hayes brings his absolute smoothest and hottest vocals to this monster of a soul record. There's only 4 tracks on the entire album, two per side, but man oh man, each one is a total journey. Hayes is unafraid and unbothered by the conventions of a radio-friendly song; he has a story to tell on each song, lyrics and instrumentals all included, and you're gonna sit there and ride with him. The last track takes over 8 minutes to get to the first sung lyric, and the slow build is simply incredible. Hayes utters or sings every word like it's worth gold, and the sparseness and spaced nature of the vocals make them so much more poignant and sensual. This record laughs in the face of quick and catchy pop; like a good lover, it takes it's sweet time. Stand out tracks include "Walk On By", "One Woman", and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix".

I love this album. Long, dramatic songs with a great groove and room to breath. This is innovative, progressive/psychedelic soul at its finest. Stellar instrumentals (tasty ass guitar licks, bass in the pocket with solid fills, strings and brass for added effect) and classic smooth delivery from Hayes. “Walk On By” is a phenomenal long journey (sampled in some great rap) that hits an exciting climax. The tempo picks up for “Hyperbolic…” but the tight groove sticks around. “One Woman” is the most classic sounding soul track, but a high quality one. The album ends with “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” which can only be described as epic, story telling in a song. Just a great album that rewards close listening. What other soul album could have 4 tracks take up 45 minutes and never get dull?

Delicious.

So good. Groovin and movin baby

Fantastic. Really nice chill album

Fuck yeah

incredible sound. great tracks!

Four tracks and most were covers. Good though.

Woah! This soul music really shocked me it was really good, and unexpected!

Great!

Fantastic arrangements, a classic

For my sins I only discovered this about 5 years ago. It has immaculate production. It is close to God at times. Yeah, the spoken bit on side 2 goes on a bit too long but it IS a album of indulgence. Can only be a five...

Very good. Enjoyed thoroughly

Smooth af

five fuckin stars

8 / 10 Soul con canciones largas muy instrumentales.

I doubt I would have found this album on my own, and I’m glad I did. Everything about this album is great. No frills soul, good stuff.

This is one of the coolest things ever created. You will be cooler just for having listened to this album. 5/5

1. 4.9 2. 4.9 3. 4.4 4. 4.7

Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic is perfect

Hoh ha is iconic. I don’t know where I heard the first song but it’s super familiar

Beautifuly captivating and powerful

Wonderful

Phenomenal. Hot & bothered soul. I couldn't hear the interview on Spotify, that sucks. But it's not Isaacs fault. Probably 🤔

Likeed Hyperbolicsyllablecsesquedalymistic, nice upbeat...will have to look up lyrics. The other songs were relaxing to listen to.

I did not know this artist before, and this album makes me feel inside a Dolce & Gabbana ad. It is surprisingly good to make an album of 4 songs with a duration of more than 18 minutes and do not feel repetitve A good choice to play in roadtrips! 8/10

V good

The last track is 18 minutes long and the drums don't kick in for 8. I believe this is known as "foreplay." Very sexy record.

Epic. Looooooove Isaac Hayes with my whole life. He scored some amazing films in the 70's too and just totally had the goods. He buttered my soul alot. This was revolutionary. Sensational!

Bloody loved this. Thought the production was incredible and loved the stories in it. Such cool instrumental stuff alongside Isaac’s epic voice. Favs One woman By the time I get to phoenix Think I might give it a 5 Totally did Just well enjoyed this. Was playing mass effect while listening

I like reading the context of when the album was released to the history of the year it was released in; I listened to it twice. Flashes of funk, and sensualness over buttered soul, like the album was named.

Symphonic soul doesn't get better than this.

A perfect four tracks. A perfect beginning, middle, and end. Hot Buttered Soul only exists thanks to the label's complete desperation after losing their back catalogue over night. Hayes was in the right place at the right time and he capitalized on it. Truly a cosmic gift. RIP to the GOAT. *Heard before.

This wins the most apt title for an album. The production is on point and has such a modern feel. If you like an ounce of soul you will love it.

Total head-bopper with a beautiful finishing story. It’s amazing how one could turn spoken word to music

You could make another 5 star album just outta songs that sample the songs on here.

Hot damn. I'm gonna need a shower and a cigarette after that one. So much soul. You also could have told me this was released anytime between 1970 and 2023 and I would believe you. So timeless (even with the filter pedals... who doesn't love a filter pedal... looking at you Thundercat). I was here for all of it. Even the 8 minute short story starting off By the Time I Get to Phoenix. The album is a whole meal so plan accordingly but it's one good good meal.

there really is no music that just oozes cool more than isaac hayes. his voice, the vibe, the orchestration and production. when i listen to this album, i feel like i am the coolest motherfucker on the planet.

#motovation, #lounge, #working

Like the title of the album suggests, this album is one hot and smooth soul album. Hayes voice is velvet. You get wrapped in it each track and just want to hang out for more. Despite having long tracks, which in 2023 can require too much attention for people, the songs don't drag. All of the musicians are right in the pocket and put on great performance. The mixing highlights everyone without taking the attention away from others, which I can appreciate a lot. While the story at the start of 'By the time I get to Phoenix ' takes a while to get into, by the end of the song I was having a great time. I'd easily recommend this, and will be playing it for years to come.

This album is great. Whether listening to every note on headphones or in the background, Isaac’s great voice and the majestic arrangements are perfect.

It’s easy to forget just how big Isaac Hayes was. Particularly because living in australia his biggest thing was theme from shaft. (Which is great). But this earlier stuff didn’t really fit in the Australian demographic.* And sadly too, none of his stuff made the big chill soundtrack so the confected nostalgia that attached to Motown and those other soft rock acts didn’t really include Hayes. He was Chef in South Park and that ended badly. Yay us. So this album is extremely good. Walk on by is done as a soul epic. Motown meets Spector meets Jim steinman meets early Queen meets Prince. The second track gets down and funky. Johnny wah wah Watson shines. One woman is a sultry ballad. Nice stuff. And then one of the best songs by one of the best songwriters. Stretched out, phoenix is taken far beyond where Jimmy Webb would have seen it go but keeps its essence. Hayes stretches it out. It’s marvellous. And he had more to come. A great album by a great artist. 4.5 stars. * the complication is of course the reluctance of Australian audiences to listen to black artists or the cost it took to get stuff out here or the reluctance of radio stations to play this stuff or the cultural gulf between Australian suburbia and black urban culture. Or all of it.

He takes one of my all time top 100 tracks and takes it stratospheric as track #1. Masterful orchestration. and then the 'liquid' voice comes in (shivers down my spine as I recalled a Gregory Porter concert Kongresshaus Zürich) . oh my. 5+++

Isaac Hayes, hell yeah! Normally, my musical taste runs to fast, loud and out of control, which is the opposite of what Mr Hayes is doing here. But I really dig it. He really wrote the book on what coudl be done by stretching out the soul sound. His arrangements are immaculate, and the backing (by the Bar-Kays) is funky and disciplined. Listening through, there are million tiny moments that I recognize from samples in hip hop and trip hop songs. This certainly has been an influential sound. I could live without the 8 minutes of talking at the opening of "By the Time I Get To Phoenix", but that is a small criticism on an otherwise immaculate record. 5 stars.

So happy to be introduced to this album. Sultry Issac. It’s a groovy and sexy listen.

It was soo beautiful just the vibe i needed to focus and work but also see myself painting to this album. Very creative

1. Walk On By Such a cool groove, the guitar(?) sounds so unique whilst not being inaccessible. his voice is calm but stoic. It EASES!!! flutes are always a plus. “o, mama. walk on by.” the pace is glorious, while it is a long song, it still conforms to structure. ~7 minutes in, it starts the build!!! orgasmic!!! this is brilliant. THAT GUITAR AT THE END??? best part definition of cooooool. 2. the groove and mood continues… so good!!! it’s all about building up to a cacophonous climax, and each one is as emotional as the last. 3. This album is unique in that the centerpiece is the short piece, while the others are almost or far surpassing ten minutes in length. that being said, this does NOT pale in comparison to the others, if anything, it is a strong build to the monstrous, twenty minute “by the time i get to phoenix” 4. here it is, the peak of peaks. the top that towers above everything else. absolutely glorious in form. it doesn’t really start until about seven minutes in, but by god, i was still enthralled. 5/5 chef’s kiss!

This album touched my soul and I felt something from it I hadn’t felt from anything else

The ambition is clear from the start. The orchestration, the very fact a simple pop hit of the day is bloated to over 11 minutes as a way to open the album. And it works. It’s as if Massive Attack never happened. Though by nine minutes in… that word previously used is back in one’s mind. Bloated. Do we really need over 11 minutes of this? I love records that provoke a reaction. Is it Prog or is it just pretentious? Are the two the different sides of the same coin? Because well before it’s nine minute conclusion we realise we don’t actually need 9 minutes of Hyper… either. But , once you’ve worked this out, you can accept it for the brilliance that it is. One Woman is a soul classic sitting within a Progressive, um, Soul(?) album. Which is the context within which you need to look at the Jimmy Webb standard, … Phoenix. Yes did a Prog Rock cover of “America” by Simon and Garfunkel. They took the simple and made it complex. It didn’t work out too well. And Hayes likely needs to similarly apply the maxim that less is more. Because this song says it all in its original 3 or 4 minutes. It doesn’t need a 10 minute monologue to set the scene. But we can forgive him for the beauty of his version of the song. And he did beg our indulgence at the start of his monologue. This is a record that is so uncompromising it demands your full attention. Which is fine by me.

Gooood

A perfect deep avant soul album that ends with one of the best covers ever.

Hot Buttered Soul is a perfect title for this album. I absolutely loved his version of Walk On By - in my opinion, it's one of the best songs ever written & recorded. I've added his version to my favorites. The rest is wonderful with the exception of the spoken word part of the last track. All in all, great listen. 4.5 stars.

This is the 70s prototype for Silk Sonic and I’m about it

Oh shit this album is awesome. How have I never heard of Isaac Hayes before?

Great album. Still love hearing his voice!

Really soulful!

Fave: One Woman

track ranking: Walk On By Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic By The Time I Get To Phoenix One Woman cover art: 7/10 - looking at it makes me taste buttered biscuits or cornbread holy shit. the title is accurate as this is some of the smoothest, warmest music every laid to tape. Walk On By is a stellar Dionne Warwick cover, feeling like an epic trek throughout some late '60s urban neo-western odyssey. the record's psychedelic touches rlly shine here, with woodwinds and occasional distorted guitars wrapping around the incredible funk bassline. the horns and strings cut through the song like there's no tomorrow (actually, this song all feels very apocalyptic),

Gun to my head, I don't think I could have named an Isaac Hayes song other than the theme song to Shaft. But holy hell, this album was amazing. Isaac Hayes's voice is so smooth but powerful; there's a certain truth to his singing, and I can't help but wonder how much of these songs are some sort of memoir for him. The musical arrangements were outstanding as well. I loved the string arrangements, and the guitar playing was great too. This album was such a surprise hit for me, and now I want to watch Shaft.

After listening to and rating 211 albums over the past year, I can confidently say this is in the top 5 of best albums on the list so far. It does not get funkier than this. For me, a track list of four songs, half of which are 10+ minutes, is like heroin.

This soul isn't just hot, it's forged from Olympian flame; this soul isn't just buttered, it's draped in liquid gold.

Now this is my jam. Smooth funky beats make you feel warm in your chest and move on your feet. Just like drinking a cup of... well... Hot Buttered Soul

This was funky and smooth. I can tell a lot of artist have used these beats as samples.

Yessss!

Isaac Hayes' 1969 album, "Hot Buttered Soul," is a genre-defining soul masterpiece. With just four songs spanning 45 minutes, it's a soulful journey that leaves a lasting impression. The album opens with the powerful "Walk On By," setting the tone with Hayes' emotive vocals and smooth production. "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" introduces a female backing vocal, adding depth to the sound. As the album progresses, "One Woman" hints at a more complex narrative. The epic "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" is an 18-minute soul odyssey, showcasing Hayes' storytelling prowess. The album's sensual artwork complements the music perfectly, and its cohesion makes it a pleasure to listen to in one sitting. "Hot Buttered Soul" is a timeless classic that defines the soul genre.

Some of the best of thebgenre

And now for the music of Mr Burt Baccarach! This is funky, sensual and just a tiny bit repetitive in places. Damn good though.

Somebody get Chef out of the kitchen! He's cooking too hard!

This album is insane holy shit His vocals are wild and these instrumentals are doin something to me

Really good, I need to listen to more soul music

Cracking soul

I liked this a great deal more than I expected to. I think the album name describes this perfectly. It's outrageously soulful, warm and smooth as butter. So enjoyable on this week that's finally seeing a bit of sun, it just makes me wish I was lounging by a pool instead of sitting at a desk. Hayes' vocals are great and the production is absolutely amazing. I will say that the length of these tracks are excessive in my opinion - They couldn't hold my focus throughout, but I don't mind as these are perfect songs to sit somewhat in the background. A wonderful record. Favourite: Walk On By

This album is growing immensely in my all time favourite albums, it is that good! With only 4 songs Isaac Hayes, can’t afford any missteps, and frankly, there’s none. Deep, buttery smooth voice backed by an incredible band. And lyrically great too, sometimes on the nose, but mostly very creative wordplay and a nice flow to the singing. 9 out of 10

A classic. Amazing arrangements, and performance. You'd think the tracks would be too long, judging by the timings, but you would be wrong. They are the perfect length for Hayes to present his version of these stories. And great to hear an album with proper dynamics, building and swooping majestically.

Never heard any of these songs before and they were terrific. Too long for radio. So glad I listened.

Hot Buttered Soul was perhaps the most perfect explanation for whatever agenda Isaac Hayes was conjuring up towards the beginning of the 1970s. A journeyman throughout the 60s, Hayes saw the opportunity to reconfigure and reinvent not only the songs that comprised Hot Buttered Soul (only a scant four songs elongated to epic status) but the R&B/Soul sound as he saw fit. There is a reason why is renditions of Walk on By and By the Time I Get to Phoenix remain cornerstones of his discography and blueprints on how to conjure up feeling in compositions outside the typical range. And that's not to say nothing of One Woman and Hyperbolicsyllabic..., two tracks that prove that filler doesn't exist in such a quality album. It is a tad bit hard to imagine what soul would be like without the hot butter but I can only guess that we'd be a whole lot poorer. P.S., the album cover alone is a signifier that baldness looks best on Black men.

This album just oozes sexiness from every pore; this type of jam-funk is just so tasty. The songs are all extended grooves, but all 4 pull their weight and are a treat to listen to. Just such an essential R&B album.

This is transcendental. I had no idea what I was missing. The longer songs earn every second of their length, with free-flowing structures that take you on a psychadelic soul journey. The grooves are tight, the melodies are gorgeous, and the arrangements are expertly executed. Love the slow builds to powerful climaxes on here, and the way Hayes pours out his heart is always worth sticking around for. Seriously, even on the cover song (By The Time I Get To Phoenix,) he's sings with so much conviction that I wholeheartedly feel like he's telling his own heartbreaking story. This one's an easy five.

Absolutely fantastic. Sexy, smooth and cool as can be. Does not sound like it was recorded in the 60s. Did not know soul can sound so progressive as this.

I feel sexier for having just listened to this. Hard to believe this came out in 1969. Coulda been released tomorrow and it'd be no less perfect.

This one blew me away right out of the gate. Thought IH was going to be like a Barry white mixed with Chef but this was pretty big and epic and daring. Listened a couple times to it

Très cool le soul orchestral, j’aime beaucoup EDIT DU FUTUR: C’EST JUSTE TROP BON, J’PEUX PAS LE LAISSER DANS LE CLUB DES 4

This album is slow, but the arrangements are insane. I think this will grow on me even more with more listening. Walk On By and Phoenix are so good!

Absolutely delicious

I was surprised to see issac Hayes again because I thought he was just the shaft guy but it makes much more sense why that soundtrack was so good after hearing this. The album really lives up to its title and is just some really really great soul music. The third track is definitely the weakest but this still gets a 5 due to the sheer power of walk on by.

Remarkably accurate album title

Normally not into Soul, but this got me!

Fantastic, great arrangements and songwriting.

This is an awesome funk soul vocal groove slow and rich and creamy lyrical musical masterpiece to be enjoyed with a rich cognac or cherry wine oh lawd baaaaby! The fact this is so groovy after 55 years. The Phoenix song is HOT. I need a shower! 5 out of 5.

I want to go to bed with that voice.

Gotta love the soul vibes!

Very immersive album with songs to remember. Only thing I have to say is that it’s too short.

Great album. Wish it was longer

seminal

The slow burn to end all slow burns, and I need to go to the burn ward because I jumped straight into it and loved every second.

Soul music as it should be. The Bar-Kays nearly steal the show, right of the gate, with axe work so hot it’s sizzling. (That one doesn’t know the guitarist’s name is an embarrassment to be rectified – Harold Beane and Michael Toler seem to be the guys, but don’t sleep on Charles Pitts’ soloing on “Do Your Thing” on Shaft – these cats can play their asses off and seem all-time underrated.) But IH is so cool he knows he can hold off and do his thing and will still have maximum impact (less being more yet again [except when it comes to wah-wah, where one is very much in the more-is-more camp]). When he talks, when he sings, one listens. “Walk on By” is the very definition of soul singing, and so much besides. The song rocks, truly, and slow burns, too. The nearly unpronounceable second cut certainly is singable, besides being full-on groovy. “Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic” indeed – easily one of the fattest grooves of this or any other decade (and in fact might have single-handedly pushed across the ‘60s-’70s threshold). “One Woman” drips with ‘70s sentimentalism (in a good way, too, the contrast with the baritone voice working well) and works as a slightly misogynistic morality play. “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” gets points for creativity but it does drag a bit. Still … wonderful record, great ride and experience overall.

Superb! Full of funk and soul, was let down a little by the previous Isaac Hayes entry and this more than made up for it, never heard a version of walk on by like this one, assume no-one has done it like this since cos it just wouldn't get close

2 classic songs get Isaac Hayed and become 100 times as long. Anyway: great soul album from >50 years ago that I had not listened to for many years.

Smooth and soulful. Would be a great record.

Honestly very calming

Iconic.

There's not much to say - this is the best album on this list, no competition at all. It's actually ridiculous how good it is, amazingly groovy record. I love "Walk On By" and "By the Time I Got To Phoenix". I'm heading to a music store right now to buy a vinyl of this album, from now on you can call me Isaac Hayes' fan #1. Perfect Sunday morning with "Hot Buttered Soul".

One of the few albums in history to transcend it's own genre. This is beyond it's time. So good in so many ways it's not just Hayes but the producers and arrangers that seemed to hit the right spot at the right time. Even the cover is a bold statement. Love it.

This was a wonderful blend of soul and orchestra. "Walk on By" is a masterpiece. "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" is quite fun. "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," however, might have brought the rating down a bit. It made me laugh out loud that it took my whole 8.5 minute commute to actually get to Phoenix just as I turned the car off. But on the other hand, that's a pretty spectacular intro while holding that key down on the organ the whole time.

This definitely was some hot buttered soul, and I was totally taken by it...until the interpretation of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix"...this track left me more like cold margarine.

Soulful and sexy and only a little silly. Heart!

I knew two of the four Isaac Hayes songs on this album going into this… Walk On By and By The Time I Get To Phoenix. I love both songs as songs, but Isaac really takes them to a special place. The songs on this album are very extended from the versions that played on the radio. These tracks take their time with you - no wham, bam, thank you ma'am for Isaac Hayes. Slow down, go with the flow and slow progression, and savor the orchestral arrangements and backup vocalists. Linger over a lost love and Walk On By. Groove to that extended piano solo in Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic. Vacillate between One Woman and another. Then take the full 18:44 to get to Phoenix. These songs gave me goosebumps then left me completely satisfied. I want to stay with this album all night.

Soul music at it's finest. It won't be great for everyone but it's what I like in music when I'm in the mood. I'll be exploring this one for awhile.

It would be a 8.5 but vibe with it really well and couldn't give it a 4 stars

4.6 - Majestic. I especially love the sweeping composition on "Walk on By" that creates a landscape massive as a spaghetti western. I also love the hushed grooves, especially at the beginning on "By the Time..." where Hayes raps over a single drum kit and muted organ.

top demais né n tem jeito muito sensual

Některá hudba je prostě nadčasová. Jen je trochu škoda, že One Woman ja taková "obyčejná" oproti tomu experimentálnímu zbytku.

Butter me up baby!

Such an incredible album. Don't even know what else to say. Always been one of my all time favorites.

I’ve only ever known Isaac Hayes as Chef from Southpark, but I enjoyed the groove on this album! A definite classic.

谁能拒绝老的深情的SOUL呢。

What's there not to love?

A classic. I still think walk on by is the best track on the album

Muy bueno.

Before Scientology, Isaac Hayes had something good going on. Something soulful and funky and just a little witty. Hot Buttered Soul delivers 4 songs in 45 minutes. Those are Jazz stats. And really, for a soul singer, these are impressively sprawling pieces. Side A has been exploited for samples enough to be worth hearing as an original document. Certainly Walk On By is musically worth the ride. Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic feels like it is trying to be very clever in word choice, and lyrically it clunks a bit, but overall the music is something exciting to be part of. Side B gives us some straight Soul to start and then moves on to a version of By the Time I Get to Phoenix that feels more like a sermon. That first 8 minutes of Story Going Nowhere loses this a half star in my book, but overall this was surprising in scope. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

Much better than Shaft. I still have trouble not hearing Issac Hayes as Chef from South Park. I thought this was a five from the beginning and it might be, but for now, it's a four

Always enjoy Isaac Hayes’ music, but I feel like this album is hampered by the last track of “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” with the talking. I understand the idea behind it, but it kind of ruined the groove of the album I was immersed in.

maybe a five on another listen

What an album. 4 songs in 45 minutes. Clearly a big influence on hip hop. I know this has been sampled so much I could even hear that bed spring beat.
