Reviews (page 5 of 7)

This was new to me. I liked it.

Not bad, not bad. Upbeat and fun.

Starts off really well but the second half doesn't deliver much excitement.

New album/band for me. I enjoyed the title track, Smoke ‘Em, and Methadonia. King of New York was fun too - overall, I liked listening to the album, but I doubt I'll come back to it. Interesting that Wikipedia has absolutely nothing to say about the band.

It aight scoobs. - 6/10

Not super compelling but didn’t completely miss the mark. It was okay but don’t think I’d listen again 6/10

6/10 - Some of the songs I like and others I do not care for. The first few songs were fun to listen to and I loved the use of trumpet.

i like crime 6.5/10

I think this is closer to kid rock music than a lot of people would want to admit. The lyrics were goofy and it was more a mix of hip hop and 90s rock than country but close enough. Interestingly, I already don’t really remember most of this album despite enjoying it but I still remember quite a bit of devil without a cause despite it being corny trash.

I quite enjoyed it, was varied enough to keep my attention anyway. I dont think its a great rap record or a great rock record or even a good rap rock record, but it is decent. Im just not entirely sure what ‘it’ is. King of New York was probably my favourite, enjoyed Scooby Snacks, Bear Hug, and The Fun Lovin Criminal too. I think this will get better after a few listens but sticking to a 3 for now

Scooby snacks is great, they definitely have a unique sound. I hoped the rest of the album might be of a similar level but can't say any other song stood out. It might be a slow burner but don't feel particularly keen to listen again. That said it wasn't terrible, just not that good either, but if a shame really. 2.5.

I enjoyed a lot more of it than I expected, it has an interesting mellowness. It's not ground breaking stuff but the rapping and rock tunes hit just right. Methadonia is an awful track to end the album on and a bigger downer. Highlights: The Fun Lovin' Criminal Scooby Snacks Crime and Punishment

Sure I've listened to this as a teenager, but don't really remember any of it, which maybe tells me something.... Huey Morgan seems like a cool guy, used to like his 6 music show I spent a lot of this trying to work out if it is cool or is it a bit cheesy....I think I fell on the side that it's cool, but it definitely isn't all of the same quality and ultimately it is quite forgettable. Bombing the L was crap. The rock rap thing doesn't work, or doesn't sound good anymore... Scooby snacks is obviously great. Highlights: The fun lovin criminal Scooby snacks King of new York Overall a bit silly but quite enjoyed it, probably won't be back!

Nice, groovy Hip Hop. Bit of rock. Good melodies but sometimes monotonous and repetitive. Also with trumpet. I enjoyed listening.

rap but not rap

Equal amounts dated and enjoyable. A good vibe going on here and there

Enjoyable but probably not gonna come back to it.

Not totally down with the lyrics...BUT... down with the beat! I can just about forgive them for 'All the time in the world' version!

As nostalgic as this music is for the late 90s, I don't think I can think of a situation where I'd choose to listen to it again. The structure of the choruses here often felt too repetitive to me, and the songs themselves got to be a little stale after a while. Not much to note here other than the fact that the album feels a bit like a time machine. Highlight: Passive/Aggressive Lowlight: Come Find Yourself Surprise Hit: Methadonia

Hip hop. Rock

"Come Find Yourself" is the debut album by American rap rock band the Fun Lovin' Criminals. Hip hop, alternative rock, blues, funk, jazz rap and mafioso rap are the genres. Yeah, I heard all of that. The Fun Lovin' Criminals are Huey Morgan (vocals, guitar), Brian Leiser (bass, keyboards, trumpet, harmonica) and Steve Birgovini (drums, percussion). Commercially, the album hit #7 in the UK and #144 in the US and, critically, had decent reviews. An bluesy acoustic guitar opens "The Fun Lovin' Criminal." It continues the blues feel with an electronic guitar and horns. Morgan rapping and introducing his band who rob banks, pull pranks and eat franks. They go soulful and jazzy in "The Grave and the Constant." It's got a groove. Horns, keyboards and piano. Make the most of your life even if you're up to no good. Speaking of up to no good, they're running around robbing banks all wacked off of Scooby Snacks in their big hit "Scooby Snacks." The catchy chorus. The "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs" samples. Scooby Snacks are diazepam (Valium). The funk gets going in "King of New York." A souful, funky beat. He's describing the gangster life and I think they're trying to jailbreak John Gotti. A searing guitar solo outro. Yeah, this album was fun. I don't even know if there's a singular style to describe their music. Morgan raps and the band plays blues, jazz, rock, funk, pop and soul. The lyrics are clever and funny. The vibe is pretty chill overall. An album worth checking out if just for "Scooby Snacks."

Like 3 great songs!

Didn't leave any impression

Loved the down tempo FLC sounding tracks. Not keen on the uptempo tracks. Too varied for me.

Interesting

Scooby snacks!

Fun Lovin’ Criminals have a smooth sound: hip-hop with touches of country rock and a jazzy rhythm section. They’re cool but their coolness feels like an affectation. It’s a little calculated and feels a bit dated. But I can’t dismiss them entirely because they do have musical chops. I’m impressed to see most of these songs feature live instrumentation. Acting cool is one thing but sounding this slick and smooth is an accomplishment. This isn’t something I’ll be replaying but hats off to them all the same.

Dang my computer restarted over night and I lost what I had written for this but I'll try my best to sum it up: This is pretty '90's in a good and bad way. I think the flows are nice but the lyrics leave a bit to be desired. Often times it feels like words were added just because they rhyme and for no other reason. I really liked the songs that had live instruments and you could tell there was effort put into those tracks. Overall the album is a 3/5 for me. I didn't dislike it enough for a 2 but it also didn't offer me too much to rate it much higher than a 3. I feel a real sense of disappointment when I write something here for an album throughout a day of listening and thinking and then come back to find that it did not save (like my computer restarting), or if I just forgot to save it myself. It's only happened like 3 or 4 times so far but it's pretty lame.

1 - The Fun Lovin' Criminal é bem bacaninha/gostosinha. 9. We Have All The Time In The World é mó gostosinha também, levinha.

first listen sometimes it's rock and sometimes it's hip hop and the whole time it's mid

Favo's: The Grave And The Constant, I Can't Get With That, Methadonia

Very ok mid 90s hip hop album. Better than rap. 3 out of 5.

It is 1996. Sublime combines hip hop with reggae. 311 combines hip hop with funk. I guess these guys combine some 90s alt/blues with hip-hop? It's fun .. it's in the name and I feel like I've heard some of this stuff before. It's definitely in the wheelhouse of things I should like, but 9 tracks in I'm realizing there are better artists that scratch this itch. Interestingly enough there is not a lot about this album on Wikipedia. I'm not even sure why it's on this list. Review of Reviews: Some people seem to really like this and some people find it completely hollow. Hah. I think if I'm true to myself, I like it just fine. it is a good blend of hip hop with instruments and a bit funky in the first half... Best Track:

- Love the use of guitar in here - songs were fun and smooth - 2.5

- pretty good - enjoyed the use of rock beats

smooth listening, but I don't need to hear it again.

It's not bad, but it is altogether forgettable.

Fun, funky, and has a lot of personality, enough to make up for any lack of technicality I'd otherwise want for.

AJ: sounds kinda cool. 3shhh

This was fun. Not entirely original or exciting, but I enjoyed myself. They have room to improve, however, I do think they have promise. Had, I suppose, since we know nothing became of these fellas. 3/5

Not my thing for the most part.

HL: "Smoke Em", "I Can't Get With That", "We Have All the Time in the World" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ had my head bobbing at least once or twice Oct. 6, 2023

Very surprisingly solid. One album that I was shocked to find on this list, as it didn't have that much of a cultural impact in the states. But definitely more than the single. 3/5

Highlights: We Have All the Time in the World Methadonia The Grave and the Constant

Brought back teenage memories as I was 13 when this came out, it's an ok album but I wouldn't put it in 1001 albums of all time. I imagine some people would because the mix of different genres and styles, use of samples etc etc, as I guess it was one of the first mainstream albums to mix all that stuff together, but I'm not sure they do it very well... scooby snacks is a fun song the other singles are ok, but the album tracks really do feel like filler, I had to skip a few of them.

Surprised how much I enjoyed this album. And this what I look forward to most when listening to new music/bands off this list. The genre was listed as Hip Hop, but there was a little bit of something for everyone. Rock, R&B, Soul, Jazz, blues and rap. A very unique sound and style, leaning towards the R&B sound I enjoy, but a solid blend of several genres. Whenever I find myself grooving in my chair at work, I know this is the sound for me and right off the start, I was grooving to The Fun Lovin' Criminal. I found the lyrics to be fun and entertaining throughout the album as well. In The Grave and the Constant references In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. King of New York with Gotti and Smoke Em references NFL hall of famer Don Shula, Boston Bruin great and NHL hall of famer Phil Esposito, even Spanky and Stymie. Just all around fun, good sounds, great beats and fun lyrics. I had a great time listening and even downloaded Scooby Snacks with my first listen. Thought We Have All The Time In The World sounded a bit like the lead singer of the Eels. Bomb in the L, anybody else hear smoke on the water? Again, this is what makes this album solid. You can go from a nice mellow R&B sound, to a rock n roll sound, combined with some solid lyrics. Clean, fun, catchy along with some solid grooves makes this an album a very good listen. I would definitely put this on again and will introduce Mindy to these guys. I liked the majority of songs and I didn't think there was a bad song off the album. Favorites - Scooby Snacks, The Fun Lovin Criminal, Passive / Aggressive, Smoke Em and Crime and Punishment. Listened to this a few times over last couple days and I just felt this was a very good listen. 3.5 Maybe 4? Tough for me to decide, but I gotta move on........ 3.5 but will score a 3

3.5 Not going to lie, when I saw “rap rock” I expected to hate this album, but I ended up really kind of digging it - even if Fun Lovin’ Criminals is a goofy name for a group, at least they weren’t lying when they promised fun. The opening stretch of The Fun Lovin’ Criminal to Bombin’ the L in particular is incredibly strong, to the point where I was seriously questioning if the album could keep that musicality up and go the distance - and it doesn’t quite, the back half started running together and losing me a little bit, but it was still enjoyable for the most part, just not to the point where I found myself grooving like I was at the beginning. The only thing that really stood out to me after the midway point was We Have All the Time in the World, which was an interesting change-up from the rap sound of the album to a slower, alternative rock-style song with vocals that sounded like a cross between Lou Reed and the guy from Eels - it’s also possible I have too much Lou Reed on the mind lately. Definitely a different spin on rap rock - this is way smoother than anything else that comes to mind when the genre is mentioned, which for me is Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, and Limp Bizkit (for better or for worse). There’s not a whole lot of substance, so I don’t know if I’d go as far to say that this a full re-listen from me anywhere in the near future, but I can definitely see myself re-visiting the first six tracks. The chorus of Passive / Aggressive is incredible, the riff of Bombin’ the L goes hard (even if it is just Smoke on the Water), and the hook of Scooby Snacks is incredibly infectious despite goofy references to the cartoon series and Pulp Fiction. Can’t quite pull the trigger on the 4, but I can confidently say I liked this.

A couple of missteps, most notably a misguided cover of ‘We Have All The Time In The World’. (Was it really needed?) Generally though, this is somewhat surprisingly, a solid little album. It’s not ground-breaking but it’s a lot of fun.

3 Pretty good

For hip-hop this was OK, although when I downloaded it I assumed it had Suspicious Minds on it. Damn my memory for band names... I didn't know any of it other than Scooby Snacks - which I had no idea was by this band. But, yeah, it was OK - one of the more listenable hip-hop albums I've come across on this list.

I like "Scoobie Snacks" a lot, the rest of the album is a bit less... it is not grating, thankfully, so not an entirely bad listen.

Fun enough

"Check that ass like Phil Esposito" That line alone gets it a minimum 3. I like it more than I did when it came out; sometimes it's a weird/bad mix of genres that doesn't always work (I'm not feeling the bad-tone heavy wall of guitars here for a second) but there are enough other fun grooves here to make this worthy. Cut it down to a top-7 and I'd listen again. 6/10 3 stars

Nice and cheesy. Reminds me of comedies I used to watch as a kid. So many genres, really cool.

Fun and chill, but I can't really say I'm impressed or anything.

Good Kickback and relax Rap, with a little too much in the record

The genre hopping really works on this one. The guitar playing (eg on I can't Get With That) is quite good and the sample from the Pumpkin and Honey Bunny scene in Pulp Fiction is classic. We Have All The Time ... is an interesting choice of cover and the band's name is so good.

Some decent hip-hop/R&B. I tapped my foot and enjoyed it as much as I enjoy that genre. "Scooby Snacks" is quite fun.

My initial expectation for this album was that I would absolutely hate it. It seemed like it would be specifically designed in a lab to irritate me. I expected 90's slacker/stoner rap with grating vocals combining the most annoying aspects of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys. What I got, however, was not bad at all! It was still slacker/stoner rap with hints of RHCP, but it was well produced, relaxed but interesting grooves, and good vocals! It's still nothing I would listen to again, but it was at least decent.

Jazz licks and rap -- very cool.

Buena voz y ritmos tranquilos. Estilo un tanto peculiar, pero escuchable fácilmente

Broad album. Many genres. Although for me I heard a lot of punk which many critics seem to don't find.

A mix of styles. Gerenelly a good vibe, but no song really clicked with me. Maybe I'd have to listen to this one again. Some good instrumentals in any case. Bonus points for incorporating Reservoir Dogs lines! <3 + Scooby Snacks + Smoke 'Em + King of New York + Methadonia

This one was fun, appreciated the mix of different instrumental approaches along with fun, effortful lyricism. Can already tell this one's gonna fade from memory fast, but it was definitely a fun whelming listen in the moment.

5th June 2023 Listened mainly while painting the stair hallway after working from home. Succession finale in the evening. Light hearted, laid back 90s rap. One absolute classic in Scooby Snacks, reminded me of hearing the pulp fiction clip in my brothers room in the 90s. Chillis vibes. 3.5 if I could.

For 90s rap rock fusion I typically turned to Rage Against The Machine or Sublime. I never went into the hip hop influenced vein of that particular niche. But I had a good time with these guys this morning. Running around robbing banks all whacked off of Scooby Snacks is a mood I could fuck with today. Also did not expect to hear impassioned pleas for freeing John Gotti but I rolled with it lol.

This is like proto Limp Bizcit/Smashmouth but less shit. I like how they do the rock-rap thing but with less rock and more rap. You can really hear the jazz influences in some songs too and I enjoy that. Overall not bad could not super gripping though. A strong 3/5

Chilled and Mellow - better than I expected but became repetitive and I found my attention waning near the end - The Fun Lovin' Criminal and Scooby Snacks are the stand-out tracks, with King of New York being a particular favourite for me

Loved the bluesy "The Fun Lovin' Criminal".Interesting corss between hip-hop, blues, funk, rap, and rock.

Not as good at the Beck thing as Beck is, and a decade late to the Beastie Boys party - though to be fair this album often goes in a more chilled, jazzy direction than either of those (with mixed results). It drags a bit in the middle but overall I enjoy the vibe. More importantly, I think I can finally tell my Fun Loving’ Criminals from my Super Furry Animals.

Third listen: 2 and 3 the first two times. It gets better each time I hear it. I still don't think it is great, but I'm coming around. 3.5/5

Pretty decent

Good! I will listen to more of this album!

Not my style, very period

Nice beats and flows 7 out of 10

Truly an album of two halves. First half is straight up funky rock. Filled with unskippable tunes! Literally first seven tunes are awesome. Second seven? Not so much! Huey is cool as fuck though so a solid 3 star album!

A bit of funk/R&B, a dash of hip-hop, and a dose of machismo in places. It's a musical cocktail that promises to intoxicate but falls a bit flat after the first few sips. Highlights for me were the slower jams, that had the whole band working out a funk vibe together while the lyrics just sort of slid across the track. Tracks like 'The Grave And The Constant', 'Smoke 'Em', 'Come Find Yourself' and 'Methadonia'. I'm on the balance of 2 and 3 starts, but I'll err on the side of 3 since I wouldn't be opposed to hearing the album again. If I was looking for something along the lines of this vibe, I'd probably look for Citizen Cope or Everlast's Whitey Ford material.

I actually really liked it! Just not sure what makes it historic or significant - it’s rap about urban life in NYC. There’s a lot of that out there.

It's ok, just not my thing.

Better than I expected with fun music, but cheesy lyrics.

I enjoyed it. Hip hop background music was fun.

An AI wrote this: Come Find Yourself is the debut album by the alternative hip-hop group Fun Lovin' Criminals, released in 1996. The album features a unique blend of hip-hop, rock, and funk elements, with catchy hooks and witty lyrics. The opening track, "The Fun Lovin' Criminal," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its laid-back groove and humorous lyrics. Other standout tracks include "Scooby Snacks," "King of New York," and "Smoke 'Em," which showcase the band's ability to blend different genres seamlessly. One of the album's strengths is the interplay between the musicians, which creates a sound that is both tight and loose at the same time. Guitarist Fast's riffs and drummer Steve's beats provide a solid foundation for singer Huey's rhymes, creating a sound that is both funky and energetic. Lyrically, the album deals with themes of urban life, crime, and social commentary. Huey's lyrics are often humorous and tongue-in-cheek, with references to pop culture and current events. In conclusion, Come Find Yourself is a classic album that still sounds fresh and relevant today. Its influence can be heard in the music of many contemporary hip-hop and rock bands. If you're a fan of genre-bending music with a sense of humor, this album is a must-listen. 3.5/5

Didn't hate it but its a one and done.

3/5 Hip hop is not my thing. But it was better than I expected it to be at first blush.

I sighed when I saw this one but it wasn't as bad as I anticipated. It was mediocre and I won't listen to it again mind. Continues a week of mediocrity.

I enjoyed this more than I was expecting. I like the live band behind the beats and the jazz influences were nice. 3.5/5

This whole album immediately went into my "stuff to explore more" playlist. Definitely want to hear more of them!

I'd forgotten quite how good some of these tracks are. Nothing says mid-1990s like Scooby Snacks. There's some terrible stuff in there too. Like that cover of "We have all the time in the world".

Fun little album

Really fun album - 3 stars

Heavy sampling with early hip hop sounds. Like the full band backing the rapping. Sounds like it would fit well on an nba street soundtrack

T3B 1. Methadonia 2. Scooby Snacks 3. Crime and Punishment

I thought this album was fun, had a funk R&B rap vibe that I liked! I don’t think I’m dying to listen to it again but I would at some point for sure.

Come Find Yourself is the debut album by the American band Fun Lovin' Criminals. This album contains music from the genres of alternative rock, hip hop, blues, and funk. I found this album to be a good time and I'm looking forward to listening to other albums from this band.

I mean scooby snacks is great. The rest of the album was ok. I mean it was in stereo and high fidelity at least.

Fun record. I always liked Scooby Snacks and I still feel like it's the best of the bunch, but there are some others I enjoyed.

Wooooow completely forgot about these guys and totally enjoyed revisiting Scooby snacks. Definitely never listened to the full album and there was some good stuff here. I can't Get With That and Fun Lovin' Criminals ...but not a must listen to over and over for me.

This was fun, first half especially

It's very disjointed. One interesting song. Maybe two?

This album started off great. The cover reminded me of Run Dmc and I didnt like that album, but this was a pleasant surprise. The fun lovin criminal was an awesome opener. Passive/aggressive was a really good song. I cant get with that was another good song. Most of these songs are really good. Some mid ones bring it down. Good 6/10

Free bird sample

It's alright

1 song i liked, other songs were ok

Surpreendeu, pois o rap fluiu bem com as bases e batidas com melodias interessantes e envolventes.

Mid-nineties hip hop beats, lazy slacker rhymes and the stink of desperation to be cool. Just a bit bland and safe - perfect Radio 2 music for Dad's who feel their dangerous driving to their local BBQ. Best Tracks: The Fun Lovin' Criminals; Scooby Snacks; I Can't Get With That

Not bad and certainly bouncy, but It’s possible the artists are having more fun than most listeners will. Does it sound dated? Indeed it does.

I once had that album on CD. A rather fun listen, as far as I can remember. Then I lost this CD. But contrary to other lost ones, I never bothered buying it again. I think I'm starting to see why now... Number of albums left to review or just listen to: less than 780, I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens:  approximately a half so far  Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter (including this one)

The first half of this album is a lot of fun, the second half not so much. The singles are definitely the best songs, however I don't think they are meant to be taken too seriously! Some of the later cuts (like Bear Hug) are a bit cringy. Overall though a light hearted and unusual album, I like the fusion of rap, jazz and Latin music on here.

Listening

Stoner hip hop rock? Peculiar niche genre. I know Huey from the radio and Scooby-Snacks was on a million compilation albums. Ok I guess. Kinda plods on in a laid back way.

Before streaming, my office had a music server where anyone could go on and build playlists and we'd rotate DJing in our office. Fun Lovin' Criminals would come up frequently so this album has a big nostalgia factor for me.

Never heard of them before but it reminded me of some of the corny rap I listened to in the early 90s. 3 stars for nostalgia and being ok.

Musically and vocally its a nice hybrid mix of rock and rap. Something different with some laid back vibes.

Scooby Snacks was the only recognizable track off this album. It sounds very dated, mid-90s, lots of drug references, rap and spoken word over some rock. It was ok.

When I saw the album cover i knew I would like this album at least a little bit. This music is fun to listen to and fun to sing along with. I'm not a big fan of rap music but combined with guitars and a rock n roll vibe, well, I kinda dig it.

More white boys rapping about being gangsta or whatever. It's pretty fun, honestly but kind of a strange addition, considering the fact that the Wikipedia article for this is shorter than the article for the Uzbek village of Qirqqiz (population: 1,200). However, I should probably not be one to speak on Wikipedia article lengths, as my article is 0 words long because they keep unfairly deleting it. Apparently being the owner of the biggest PEZ dispenser collection is "not something of encyclopedic value". Fuck you, Jimmy Wales. I award this album a 3/5, one point for each "Breaking Bad extra"-looking guy in the album art.

Given the low expectations set by the album cover and description as “funky rap rock,” it was more fun than expected. High school me would probably have been really into it.

Aside from a few slightly cringey choruses, this is pretty enjoyable. A nice mix of genres

Definitely not my usual cup of tea. In particular, I strongly dislike most rap. They pull off their peculiar combination of styles quite well though and I had no trouble listening to the entire album without getting annoyed at any point. That's a good effort. Still it's not one I will ever revisit.

fine... 3/5

Interesting novelty and blast from the past - lounge-y Latino hip hop - but it beyond some catchy tracks it doesn’t have much staying power as a record in itself.

It's alright, def better than kid rock

I always had a bit of a soft spot for Fun Lovin' Criminals, despite my inability to stand rap music. They're just musical enough to pass under my radar and allow me to enjoy their rhythms. Not the world's best album by any measure, but OK to listen to from time to time.

Some harsh reviews for this considering there's a lot of dross with a lot of stars in this chart. I found it pleasant with some interesting sounds, samples from films and other bands but isn't that the name of the game nowadays? Easy listening and cool.

Dooope

Meer stevige gitaar dan verwacht. Ik vond het wel een oké album

Ok étonnament varié et sympa à écouter Prefs: The Fun Lovin' Criminal, Scooby Snacks, Bombin' The L, King of New-York, We Have All the Time in the World, Bear Hug, Come Find Yourself, Methadonia Moins pref: I Can't Get With That

Had a few bangers

Hip-hop suave. Ni fu ni fa.

Funky suave. Me gusta We Have All the Time in the World.

Best Song: The Grave and the Constant. Full lean-back chill. The drums are the star here. Worst Song: Bombin' the L. Blaring "classic rock" guitars absolutely killing the mood that had been developed up to that point. Overall: The rapping isn't always top notch, but the hazy, atmospheric vibes mean those lyrical misses matter less. There is a tendency to repeat each song's hook too often that at times feels forced. For the most part, a purely leisurely album that seems designed as an intentionally slow burn. Would be improved by removing the boisterous tracks and leaning fully into the relaxed vibe.

Some middle-of-the-road hiphop that does at least lean more into the "Fun Lovin'" than the "Criminals", which I think is to its credit.

The FLC are fun, and this album proves it. Lazy trippy but with some fantastic multi-instrumentalism in there. Good times.

interesting 90's hip hop even if apple lists it as alternative. Reminded me a bit of sublime. Nothing particularly unique, but was a fun listen.

Not a bad album, catchy riffs.

This album was average, tbh. Lot of filler with a couple of standout tracks like The Fun Lovin' Criminal.

50% decent hip-hop with a touch of trip-hop, 50% utter cringe wannabe gangster. It gets a star for being a welcome antidote to the bland indie that dominated UK airwaves at the time.

Ai generated alternative hip hop. Ambient with no distinct sound or quality. I don't hate it. Just not excited.

prime sopranos soundtrack material. actual not bad tho, found myself getting into it the longer it went on.

I found this album to be pretty generic for the most part. I only liked one track enough to save it (Scooby Snacks) and that's probably the only part of this album I'll revisit. There are 2 'slow jams' in this album that feel hella out of place - I get that they were probably trying to show that they can do more than rap/rap-rock, but it did not work for me at all. At least it wasn't insultingly bad or anything - just mediocre.

The music had its moments but even in trying to be satirical this came across as corny in a lot of moments. A fun one-time listen. 6/10

Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Bear hug

Definitely a 90s album. It was a decent album. Not sure why they felt the need to do a cover of the James Bond classic "We have all the time in the world."

Nostalgic as anything. I bounced around the limelight to loads of the tracks however it hasn't aged gracefully enough do get a 4.

Lots of fun but I definately used to hold this in higher regard than it actually deserved. In saying that there is lots to like and I enjoyed going back to it

3.5 out of 5. Chilled tunes

Yeah ok. Enjoyable even.

I really like the blend of different styles here. An enjoyable listen and while the lyrical content is a little ridiculous it seems to be pretty tongue in cheek. Refreshing to have a band not take themselves too seriously.

A few fun, funky tracks on this album, but a lot of weak tracks too. Some of them were pretty dope, though!

Not bad

A couple of classics but the rest of the album doesn't live up to them

It was alright. Good beats, good lyrics.

super 90's vibes. pretty chill.

It was quite enjoyable but nothing really stand out

Really enjoyed it, reminds me of my early 20’s

Really chill, enjoyed it. I'd recommend it for easy listening

Surprisingly enjoyed this. I liked the mish mash of genres in the samples, you can tell that they have a wide range of influences. When I got to 'all the time in the world' I thought it sounded like a velvet underground song but it turned out to be a Louis Armstrong cover, very odd. The lyrics are mostly crap and the whiff of novelty hangs over a few of the songs which loses this a few stars.

I liked the mixtures of sounds on this one.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: The Fun Lovin' Criminal, Passive / Aggressive, Bombin' the L, We Have All the Time in the World Cutting Edge: Crime and Punishment Overall Notes: Fun funky laid back rap. Kind of scratches the same itch as People's Instinctive Travels but more rock leaning.

Pretty fun album. 0RS

Thought I’d hate this as the lead singer is a bit of a nob but was pleasantly surprised. Like the hooks. Rapping was pretty decent. A surprisingly 3/5

Decent - worth a re-listen

3,7. It’s fun, baby.

Good surprise

Hip-hop suave.

Hauska levy, sopi kuunteluhetkeenkin hyvin. Scooby Snacks jäi erityisesti mieleen Tarantino-referensseineen.

Starts out strong, with an instrumental that made me expect more of a country-rap crossover (in 1996!? Lil Nas X eat your heart out). But the rest is some attractive East Coast hip-hop with rather guitar-centric beats. Fun to be sure, and I imagine a show with live instruments would be great, but not exceptional.

Definitely angling to be 90s Beastie Boys, but still pretty enjoyable overall.

Apparently Scooby snacks is very popular. Is that because people think they were listening to beck on a Spotify mix? This was very mediocre. Passive/aggressive was the only standout song. 2 stars

I’m a little confused. Are they nu-metal? Are they like a funk inspired rock band? It feels like I’m getting whiplash with how different each song is. There’s some decent vibes in here but I feel like there’s just some downers in here. One of the things on their Wikipedia uses the term “rap-and-roll” and I feel like that fits. Overall I don’t think i really enjoyed it all that much. The good songs were heavily outweighed by the bad ones and the lack of identity of the album.

For hip hop this is ok. Trippy instead of Gangster suits my tastes better. Was super cool at the time, but you do look back and wonder what all the fuss was about. I’m not sure why it’s on this list tbh. 2.5

A serious novelty album

this first song is begging to be played over the opening credits to a 2000's Justin Long movie 3 tracks in, i don't hate it, but i'm surprised to see it on this list. also, the guy in the tie, on the right side of the album cover, has to be Theo Von, you can't convince me otherwise. this is what "hot action cop" and the rest of those bands tried to emulate, so maybe they were trailblazers? idfk the entire album is what I assume college sounded like in 1997.

Es un rap-blues. No está mal, pero a mí no me gusta mucho el rap.

Kind of groovy, but really it was just the hit single that did it for me

La verdad no me generó mucho

Listenable but got very bored by the end.

I doubt even the Criminals themselves would list this amongst the albums to hear before you die.

Says it’s hip hop, sounds more like Limp Bizkit. I would rather just listen to Limp Bizkit. 2 stars for fun though.

Enjoyed the start but as a whole it lost its appeal somewhat.

Ok for rap

The blues and hip hop fusion was when they were at the best. They seemed to lose that plot about halfway through the album. The slower songs just don’t land.

This is some seriously dumb music.

I spent most of this album bouncing between “this is actually some pretty inventive fusion” and “this sounds like it was engineered in a lab for suburban white kids.” Large parts were unbearably lame, particularly all the faux-New York mobster schtick, but every so often a groove or backing track would catch me nodding along despite myself. The music was ultimately more interesting than the characters they were playing. 2/5.

This one is from the 90’s vault…. Maybe it should have stayed there.

I assume that I heard this album when it came out. The first song and not "Scooby Snacks" was familiar at least. This is not terrible. Its on par with other rap rock but not extraordinary in my opinion.

Prefacing by saying music doesn't have to be mature, art doesn't have to be "grown up" to exist and be valid expression, so I think the reviews here alluding to the contrary are silly. That said, I'm not playing devil's advocate. This is a pretty unusual mix of sounds even in the rap-rock space. I feel like usually we're talking nu-metal or the like, but this is a bit different. Like a blues/folk rap thing. It is weird, and I don't HATE it. I don't really like it all that much and I doubt I'll hit it again, but it doesn't offend or anything. A couple fine grooves. On a list that's kinda sparse re: hip-hop considering its size, bit weird to pick this one over, say, a DOOM or BDP/KRS album from a similar 10-ish year period.

Corny and just not good

Ok, it was ok. 2,5

I borrowed "Come Find Yourself" from my hometown library when I was around 14 because I mixed up Fun Lovin' Criminals with some other band (I can't remember which one). I didn't like it as a teenager and I don't like it now.

Pretty cringe.

I’d love it if I was a teenager

First thoughts: "Ok, 90s rap-rock, maybe it's a good version of it that I never heard." But it wasn't. And it was long, and along the way they actually sang through "We Have All the Time in the World" and it was really bad. Didn't quite make me angry enough for a 1-star review, so 2/5, and an entry into the "please don't listen to this before you die" list.

An album that is on this list because of one decent song, I’m sure there are better albums out there that deserve being on this list.

As far as hip-hop albums go, this one is much more redeemable in my eyes, but it's still pretty poor overall. I enjoy the songs that try something different, and I really liked the final track. Another instance where I do wish we had more rating options, because I do enjoy this better than most albums I've rated 2 stars.

this album is a testament to nick's uncontrollability... like is this the ony 1 star album he's even given? when reading the description of it i was like oh this is gonna be one of those albums that nick gives 5 stars to and I don't understand at all and somehow i'm giving it a higher rating than he did.

Solidly boring.

Not really sure how to score this. Bit of a 90s relic, and a little bit cringe today. Inessential as an album. Singles are fun, but almost in a novelty way. Somewhere between 2 and 3 stars...

2.5 stars

Not my favorite style of rap. It beats out a lot of the modern day stuff but there are countless 90's New York rap albums I'd rather listen to. The beats are pretty plain and they have the same flow and cadence in every song.

Not bad, pretty good. Not good enough to listen to ever again. Why is there no Eminem on this list?

I hate everything about this. How is there not a more deserving album to take this spot?

p784. 1996. 2 stars. Strange hybrid of hop-hop, rap and rock that partially works. The singles are fine, but there is a lot of filler, and the cover of "We Have All The Time In The World" is an abomination.

Pretty catch but it didn't stick with me.

'It's the Fun Lovin' Criminal out to represent / I know it's tough being hard & politically correct'; 'I'll break into your house & I'll smell your bed.' This is not as bad as I thought it would be, mostly b/c it's got at least some of the elements that make House of Pain a classic group, but it's still a lazy record that's committed to a musical style that was always inevitable but often too corny & really, really boring. It's not the rap-rock thing that's the problem, it's too-smooth-for-school aesthetic that (white) interpreters of blues & hip-hop get so wrong, it's Huey Morgan's insouciant & featureless voice. I dislike it even more knowing that Reasonable Doubt, The Coming, It Was Written, Stakes is High, & Ridin' Dirty were released in '96. This ain't that.

Extra star for playing their own instruments. But that's about it. Gave up three tracks in.

Wow. Scooby Snacks. That is a throwback I haven't heard since like 2002. I'm shocked to see this one on here. This is a huge cultural album that feels so niche that it's actually unbelievable that it's on here. This album is like rock/funk with rapping and was HUGE in the stoner groups. It's incredibly smooth with a great band, great brass section, and the rapping is pretty lowkey. This is my theory, but I think this album was party responsible for the "stoner" communities enjoying hip hop more; particularly Wu Tang and Tech9 from my experience. Wu Tang had the nerd culture that the stoners liked, and Tech9 had this weird metal/punk show overlap. From there they've just expended. I'm trying to think about how they jumped from Wu Tang to the current "trend" of psychedelic hip hop of Travis Scott and others. I'll get there, this theory is a WIP. Smoking weed now doesn't really have the same stigma that it did before, so "stoner culture" has kinda moved on. Musically the album is just kinda there. It's really interesting and the instrumentation is great and they're a unique combination; but it's really a cultural piece that was really popular with one particular group. These 3 guys played all the instruments and produced the whole thing themselves, which is awesome. It's just too bad they didn't really blow up more.

I didn’t mind it when I was listening to it but trying to write about it now, I realise I remember basically nothing about it

The main crime of this hip hop/rock/funk album is how incredibly monotonous, uninspired, inexpressive and non captivating the flow is. Except for three songs, this guy has the same exact flow throughout the album, and it is incredibly tedious. The only exceptions are "Bear Hug", in which the vocalist raps with a raspy voice that gives a bit of a nice attitude, and both "We Have All the Time in The World" and "Methadonia", where he signs instead of rapping. While the change is nice, his singing isn't special or anything, so in reality, it does not add any value. When it comes to the instrumentation, it is decent. It is a mix of hip hop beats with some funky and rock lines. They usually tend to the funky side, specially the bass and horns, but there are also a handful of moments were they bring up some electric guitar to give it a bit of energy, like in the choruses of "Passive / Aggressive". Overall, I think this was an incredibly dry experience. It also seems to be not that serious, yet I don't find it to be funny at all.

1 or 2

Surprisingly i liked much of it. I didnt have high hopes. Wasn’t bad

There were a few tracks I enjoyed — Smoke ‘Em and Come Find Yourself were the best. The song they’re known for, Scooby Snacks, was definitely one of the worst things here. We Have All the Time in the World felt like a bad Lou Reed parody and Bear Hug made me want to give the whole thing a 1/5 and be done. I bet they’re entertaining live, but I think I’d be tired of it after half an hour. Just enough here to avoid the lowest score, but not by much.

Started good with The Fun Lovin' Criminal. But the rest ... no, was not what I expected after that. Come Find Yourself and Methadonia were ok but the rest simply not interesting.

Better than Coldplay

This is that pretentious white college pothead dude's favorite rap group. You know the guy as the one who always starts off every retort with "You just don't get it man".

Yeah I imagine they probably do love fun. Good for them.

Have never heard of these guys, nor any songs by them. Just had it on as I was doing things on Saturday and listened 3 times through. Wasn't revolutionary, but was a good listen. I didn't love it all, but didn't hate any of it. I ended up liking 4 of the songs "The Fun Lovin' Criminal", "The Grace and the Constant", "I Can't Get With That", and "Come Find Yourself". Liked songs on Spotify: 4/13 Rating: 2/5

At first I enjoyed the rock backing tracks to the rapping, but very quickly I realized that neither part is done particularly well. It's not terrible but not very good either.

Kétaine. Mix désagréable.

Aggressively inessential.

2nd day I did not finish lol. I remember putting on a fun loving criminals song at uni and being gently ridiculed for listening to a band with a name like fun loving criminals and I cannot escape that feeling. I did not have the energy for this goofy nonsense

They could have been an ok band if they hadn't felt the need to rap.

Scooby Snacks didn’t need to make the list. 2.75

Bad music done well. Not a bad soundtrack to drive around to on a Saturday but there’s nothing remotely interesting going on

1.9 Pretty corny

so 90's haha. interesting all the time in the world cover. I liked the song I can't get with that. Lyrics underwhelming overall. 2.5

Yea, 50 minutes was too long for this. 2/5

What in the country hip hop is this. It is fun and the bass lines are diabolically boppy but the shine wears off fast. This is immature and the fusion of blues rock and hip hop I think isn;t the best flavour of the month, year, or ever tbh. On the upshot some guitar work on this is great but it's somehow lost in the wrong genre- this is like a ghetto version of really bad country rap rock

Some good beats but pretty boring lyrically.

-I feel like masters of war is a very powerful song and I wonder which war it is about, and if it is from Bob Dylan’s personal experience or what -his sillier songs give me John Prine vibes, like what is he talking about -what a weirdo -I like this album quite a bit though

More of a ‘playlist’ artist than album.

I used to love Come Find Yourself by Fun Lovin' Criminals when I was a kid, so revisiting it all these years later felt like it should’ve been a 5/5. Sadly… it really isn’t. Strip away the hits they are known for and there’s a surprising amount of filler here, with some painfully weak lyrics and tracks that just drift by without doing very much at all. What once felt cool and laid-back now comes across as a slightly cringey attempt at hip-hop, blues rock, and indie swagger that doesn’t quite land. Listening to it 25 years on, the charm has worn thin and I can’t see myself listening to it again. Favourite tracks: Scooby Snacks is still a classic and perfectly captures its moment. I also enjoyed Fun Lovin’ Criminal and King of New York, which at least have some energy and attitude. Least favourite tracks: A lot of the album just feels very “meh.” Tracks like Smoke ’Em and Passive Aggressive are dull, undercooked, and go absolutely nowhere. Album artwork: Pure nostalgia. The artwork is straight out of my youth and, to be fair, it still suits the album.

there was some promising guitar and some passable instrumental then it was all ruined when he opened his gob to "sing". all round shite

The mix of styles and instruments is a good idea, but this might serve as an example of why not many people do it. It's alright for a one-time listen. A lot of the tracks were used on adverts and promos in the 90s and they sounded good in that context. It's not great. They weren't very impressive when I saw them at a festival either. It's not fair to say it's *bad* either. But I probably won't listen again.

I’m sure I saw this band live in the late 90s for some reason. It doesn’t stand up. Overall vibes are that it’s pretty boring music.

Persona Soundtrack ahh album, has some great production and then a baffling decision that ruins the whole vibe lol

The 9th album generated for me, and the first where I was genuinely puzzled as to why it’s even on this list. I was 14 when this came out, and remember “Scooby Snacks” being played incessantly on alternative radio for a few weeks. Otherwise I have no recollection of anyone calling this a “must listen” at the time, and had forgotten about it until now. I went in thinking “there must be some reason, I’ll give it a shot.” And the first few songs weren’t terrible-the rapping definitely was, but the music had a few different styles and seemed like a decent vibe. Then the album just kept repeating variations of that “vibe” over and over, with god awful rapping/lyrics. Not good.

I could not remember them until I hit the opening of Scooby Snacks. Then I realized I know that but nothing else. Only reason I know that was because it got radio play at the time. I don't think they have anything else. Why is this on the list? Seriously there are so many other hip hop acts from this time that could be on here. Also how is this almost an hour!?! I kinda want to give it a 1 just for being almost an hour of lame shit.

4.5 Fav track: The Fun Lovin' Criminal Least fav: Bombin' the L

The singles off this album were a bit of a nostalgic listen, but not really my thing.

This started off decent enough. I was surprised how negative people were on it. But by the end, I started to understand. Hard to put to words but it got a bit grating as it went on.

for a couple of songs I was tending toward "not that bad" but you know, it's just smoothed edges, creatively devoid. easy to pick the hit out of a line up, and QT was right to do what he did to them

kinda boring

Did not enjoy this at all, production and vocals are very samey. Almost no variation or detail. Some guitar sections were cool

This album slipped a lot into the background for me. Except for when the singer was feeling themselves a bit too much. Didn't really care much for that

Dated. So very dated.

The 90s was certainly a time for music, and Come Find Yourself is certainly a product of that time. I imagine the board meeting for this album went something like this: "You know Red Hot Chili Peppers?" "Yeah? What about them?" "What if we did that, but more urban?" "Perfect, ship it." That's about all I have to say. Every track was boring, sounds like every other funk-influenced artist of the 90s. I'll give it some credit for some tight bass lines and for Scooby Snacks. Otherwise sounds like the personification of switching over to 95.9FM 90s alternative station.

It had moments but the cover of We Have All The Time in The World was ill conceived and brought the whole album down. It tries to redeem itself later but it didn't work.

It's like the Beastie Boys had a drunken one night stand with Beck. Very on trend for the mid 90s, for sure, but... it's not aging well. Not at all.

Second wave ska? Interesting artifact of another time. Reminds me of sublime. Halfway through track 2, it breaks into dirtier guitars in a surprising way that won me over to this being slightly more than a novelty project. Warm analog tones and some decent hooks. It’s clear there’s at least one instrumentalist in the group who has chops. While this particular genre fusion screams 90s, the production is good. My uber driver played me some of her ai generated songs, and this certainly felt more human than those. They also sample freebird.

Pretty cheeeeezy.

I don’t know what this band is trying to be but I don’t enjoy it. 2 stars because of Scooby Snacks but that’s only for nostalgia. It’s not a good song.

Favourites: We Have All the Time in the World

Sounds like a novelty act version of Sublime, but the joke mostly falls flat. Better when they aren’t trying to be funny or tongue in cheek.

Think it's apt that they sample Tarantino since both artists are so lost in the art of homage that they lose any sense of originality. I am a shade whiter after listening to this. Was fun to bask in the 90s production a bit so it at least gets a 2

Was fine. Not really my thing. Would give it 2.5

if i was 13 i probably would have loved this album. i’m not 13 anymore
