This was pretty good

This might be 2 star material, but the delivery is 5 star, and trying to leave out the nostalgia of being 15 and stupid when this came out is really tough.

Excelente!

Unique. Interesting wordplay, reminding me of Beastie Boys and Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, with brash delivery and biting commentary, also with NYC references of the day.

Starts fun but can't sustain it for an entire album

Shouldn't have enjoyed this but I actually kind of did. I can't imagine ever listening to it again but it was fine while it was playing. Surprising. 5.25/10 (2.625/5)

A fun and innovative take on rap. Some very catchy hits but drags on a bit

could definetely think of at least like 5 hiphop albums that probably should have been on the list instead of this

it was alright, nothing too special

Man, talk about a time capsule from the 90s. From the music production to all the Quentin Tarantino references, this album really encapsulates everything that made the 90s what it was. With that being said, it’s definitely a product of its time, but I’ll admit, “Scooby Snacks” was a super hot track back in the day.

This isn’t an amazing example but I do quite like that 90s jean advert sound where guitar bands sound like they are in space. But I reckon Babylon Zoo and Babybird are probably not going to appear on this list so this’ll do as a solid 2.5 rounded up to 3.

"Passive / Aggressive" -> "The Grave and the Constant" -> "Scooby Snacks" is a pretty solid run. This album is light and silly, with 90's grooves. Some of them would fit on a Tony Hawks Pro Skater PS1 game. I'm seeing a lot of hate for the inclusion on the list, which is a fair criticism. If I were voting for that, I'd also vote a 2/5 or less and ask for it's removal. But I feel like this is an exercise in voting on albums for their individual merit. This is pretty inoffensive; it has solid musicianship and production; it is emblematic of 90's alternative rock and hip-hop. Of course it falls under the shadows of better albums, such as Beck's Odelay or Beastie Boys Check Your Head, but it's still not dire enough to be considered bad. So a 2.5 rounded up to 3 because it does more right than it does wrong.

So fun, it's criminal! Not any every-day jam, and perhaps some explicit songs in the mix, but fun!

I remembered them vaguely. Didn't expect to enjoy the album. There's more to it than would seem.

Not my favorite genre, but this was actually fun to listen to.

Fun hip hop album

Not sure I feel the necessity here. FLC had one Stoner-Novelty hit with "Scooby Snacks." It was popular for about three months among line cooks, video store employees, and suburban high school boys. Probably immortalized forever on burned mix CD's between Afroman and Cypress Hill.

Prolly to old to enjoy this one. Does sound ok

Fun but formulaic

Ehhhhh.... it got took, repetitive for me?

I’ve heard Scoobie snacks a bunch over the years, but it was interesting to hear the rest of the album in context.

Hip-hop fusion album with some interesting instrumentation and passable rap. Songs where they lean into rock are probably the weakest, although there are some good guitar solos in those. Other genre mashups (of which there are many to choose from) are pretty solid. Best song: The Grave and the Constant Also worth mentioning: The Fun Lovin' Criminals, I Can't Get with That, King of New York.

Not bad, not good, not essential. I thought they were one hot wonders, but I knew a couple more songs. Favorite song: crime and punishment.

The Fun Loving Criminal - 6/10 Passive / Aggressive - 7/10 The Grave and the Constant - 6/10 Scooby Snacks - 4/10 Smoke 'Em - 5/10 Bombin' the L - 6/10 I Can't Get With That - 6/10 King of New York - 6/10 We Have All the Time in the World - 6/10 Bear Hug - 5/10 Come Find Yourself - 6/10 Crime and Punishments - 6/10 Methadonia - 5/10

Legends for their #1 song having the title "Scooby Snacks"

Better than expected. I am a sucker for 90s Hip Hop

For me to give a hip-hop album a 3 is to practically award it a Grammy. This was kind of fun and actually interesting with the variety of styles in the songs. I actually listened to the entire thing!

A fun blend of hip-hop and alternative that screams 90s.

Yeah. It's OK. Brought on a brief Nostalgia interlude, but no desire to listen again.

a fun listen & better in parts than I thought. The Fun Lovin Criminal & Crime and Punishment as examples 3/5

Definitely enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I kinda dig the "rap rock" vibes. Scooby Snacks was one I've heard before and it's great.

This album was such fun. I was lovin’ this! It’s criminal that I hadn’t listened to it before! You see what I did there? Yeah, that was about as subtle as this album was. I had actually totally forgotten about these guys. Then Scooby Snacks came on and I was like “Oh yeah, I remember this!” It’s fine. That song is cool, and there are some other good grooves on this record. Nothing that is winning any Grammy’s, but it was fine. A solid 3.

Unterschiedliche Stile ...

Alright rap. 3 stars

Fun and entertaining. More chill rap. Not 100% why I needed to listen to it, but not disappointed

Didn't like the first few songs

Vraiment original et amusant

Plusieurs bonnes tracks et style rap-rock bien réussi.

Meaning to listen to FLC for a long time. Perfectly enjoyable but some of it didn't stick as much. Another that suffers from being a bit long.

Fun, enjoyable experience. Interesting genre fusions, good hooks and verses. Liked the classic rock samples. Nothing I was blown away by.

This had some great instrumental moments but the vocals dragged it down. Wasn't a fan of the more "traditional" hip-hop style tracks

Great album love the rawness

I wish I would've found these guys in 1996 when I was still a young teen. I love the infusion of blues and the occasional guitar riff disruption. 3.5 stars. Notable tracks - The Grave and the Constant, Bombin the L, King of New York

Fine 90s hip hop

3 star - Blues and rap - its actually pretty good. A lot more fun than the usual rap/hip hop album

Fun album. Reminds me of various things: Beastie Boys, Beck, Sublime. I think I had heard the title track before, nothing else.

A low 3 stars, but a higher low 3 stars than the low 3 stars I gave Aerosmith's "Rocks" yesterday.

i thought this was kind of fun, idk. not something i expect to revisit in the future, but it wasn't a bad listen. not sure how important it was in the longterm, but eh.

this isn't an amazing album by any stretch, but it's decent rap-rock that explores different genres while remaining light-hearted and fun. it doesn't take itself too seriously like a lot of other albums in this space, which is nice. on the other hand, parts of it haven't aged well and i'm really not sure how it made it on this list in the first place. favorites: the fun lovin' criminal, passive/aggressive, scooby snacks, bombin' the L

Sometimes I forget that 1001 Albums is centred on UK culture, and then some seemingly random album will turn up and it's like "Wait, really?" and then it turns out it was like a number one platinum hit in the UK and the act is playing arenas but they're relatively unknown back at home in the US. And that's kind of what happened here. Come Find Yourself is a good album but it seems more good in the sense of "they were the first to make a cohesive, mainstream album in this particular new music style". It's very mid 90s, in the way that the mid 90s was aggressively masculine and everyone was going around quoting Tarantino dialogue. Most unexpectedly good song - the cover of the James Bond theme tune "We Have All the Time in the World".

Sian 4 Deb 2 combined score 3

Who doesn't love a song called Scooby Snacks?! Not my thing, but I can dig it.

First thought on seeing this before I listen while working “oh that’s gonna be rough” 1 song in “oh shit. I guess I like Fun Loving Criminals.”

Scoobies!

Respect the pulp fiction edits.

This album was pretty good. Not great. It sucks it was 1996 because this sounds like it’s trapped there. A couple more years and this could have really breathed. Otherwise a very chill time.

NOBODY MOVE THIS IS A ROBBERY

Bass and beats sameness. Not bad but less than the sum of its parts.

its fine but kinda poorly aged.. didnt need to hear it before i die but im not mad that i heard it

Pretty generic, but there’s some groovy instruments and flows sprinkled in there. Lyrics don’t really do much. Scooby snacks is tight.

Better than expected but I am still not a hip-hop lover even though I am enjoying it more and more.

More dated than my older sister, but fun nonetheless (same).

Surprisingly not that bad, album was all over the place with lots of different genres mixed into Hip hop

Forgot how much I loved them! Fun loving indeed. Good sunny day trundler but bit samey by the end

The band name and occasional lyricism hold back strong beats here.

Some great songs

Fun little record.

I did like a few of the beats and lyrics on this one. Doesn’t have the weight of a lot of the other more mainstream hip hop album hits that I’ve heard from this time, but it holds its own well.

The Fun Lovin' Criminal 3.2 Passive/Aggressive 3.5 The Grave and the Constant 3.3 Scooby Snacks 3.4 Smoke 'Em 3.2 Bombin' the L 3.3 I Can't Get with That 3.5 King of New York 3.4 We Have All the Time in the World 3 Bear Hug 3.1 Come Find Yourself 3.3 Crime and Punishment 3.4 Methadonia 3.3 Score: 3.3

Pretty good record, production is a good example of post ill communication hip hop. I dug it more than I thought I would.

It was ok.

á köflum barnalegt en samt skemmtilegur tíunda áratugar bræðingur. minnir nokkuð á beck ef hann væri með framheilaskaða og dellu fyrir glæpamönnum í njú jork. 3,5.

Feels like it should be listened in summer. Which it is. Scooby snacks was still fun despite it being overplayed in my university halls (with one person always acting it out...). The second half wore thin (including the what a wonderful world cover) and easily forgettable until the last two.

I listened to this album quite a bit as a teen. Funky laid back hip hop with some nice trumpets and bass lines. Where there are heavy guitars I don't think they add anything, "Scooby snacks" and the very chill "I Can't get with that" were highlights for me. I don't think when I first heard this I'd have really known "we have all the time in the world" except maybe from bond so all I can think is were they trying to bring it to a new audience in a time where music was less accessible... either way it's not a great cover and didn't add anything. Towards the end of the album it drops off but it still stands up in the main.

I’ve never heard of this group, but I liked it!

This was so 90's that the nostalgia nearly caused a physical response in me. What was surprising is how not terrible about half the songs were.

Enjoyable enough, with some standouts - Scoobie Snacks is still a jam. Some of the rapping feels a bit cringe. 5/10

I didn't hate this, scooby snacks being on here definitely brings it up to a 3. Some other bangers too

Formidable talent hidden behind a jocular romp. What's not to love?

I enjoyed this. Lot's of fun. 3 stars

concussed

A little nostalgic. A little dull. Fine.

nije moj đir, al uopće nije loše!

Come Find Yourself Haven’t thought about or listened to this in years. I had it on CD around the time it came out. I’m not sure what prompted me to buy it, I think it might have been the King of New York single, as listening now it gives me a very strong Proustian hit of summer 1997. It certainly sounds very mid-late 90s (in a good, interesting way) with its movie dialogue samples and very Beck and Beastie Boys, 70s soul and blues influenced rock and rap, and it’s still very enjoyable, even if there is a fair bit of nostalgia tied up in it. It is also a bit inconsistent, or at least for me not every track works. When they are hitting the more soulful, bluesy, jazzy grooves like The Grave and the Constant, Smoke Em, I Can’t Get With That, King of New York, Bear Hug, Come Find Yourself or the catchy pop of The Fun Lovin’ Criminal or Scooby Snacks, it's really good, with some excellently arranged horns, but when they are at the overdriven rock out end of things it it’s far less successful. Passive/Aggressive isn’t great and although I quite like the idea behind Bombin the L with the Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Judas Priest interpolations I don’t think the end result really works. And despite some nice guitar moments I’ve always thought the cover of We Have All the Time In the World is a bit odd. Still, it's a very nice reminiscilisten. Some of it is great, some less so, and despite only being 50 minutes it does feel a little long. I would definitely listen again, but not sure it quite gets into the 4s, so I’ll go high 3. 🚬🚬🚬 Playlist submission: The Fun Lovin’ Criminal

This album really left no impression on me at all. I can't find any real fault with it, but nothing stands out either.

This is such a wtf pick and Scooby Snacks is so booger that I want this 2.5 to be more on the low side. But the truth is, it's an OK album with some decent jazzy beats and even a couple songs I like. It's worst sin is being boring. 2.5/5

Don't take Fun Lovin' Criminals too seriously, and this is an enjoyable ride. Soulless, yes, but enjoyable.

Dangerously close to becoming too stupid for its own good. It’s a fun listen though - that saves it in the end.

It’s like the love child of Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill but it grew up in jail. 5/10

Rating: 7/10 Fun album that blends rap, rock, blues, and jazz. Some of the songs are a bit redundant but a good listen overall.

Meh an alright rap album 3/5

7/10 Consistent flows and great rhymes, sorta reminds me of MF Doom. However the delivery falls flat on a lot of the tracks and that’s where it loses me. Left me desiring a lot more as a hip-hop fan

This is entirely new to me. As I mostly associate the New York rap scene with gangsta rap and later on concious hip hop this isn't something I'd expect to ever come across on my own. Looks fairly fresh and interesting, seems a nice break from all of the classic rock I've been getting lately. The Fun Lovin' Criminal The instrumental has a lot going for it, really like the horn sample. Has a pretty cool bassline as well, and the harmonica adds some depth. The lyrics are just fine with some fun rhymes, with the vocals adding a fairly effective performance which works for the song, but never really blows me away. Decent. 3.5/5 Passive/Aggressive Smooth, chilled out guitar sample. Combined with the slow bass and laid back drums gives a really mellow atmosphere. The sound of that chorus really contrasts with the rest of the track's energy. Nice distortion. While being a moment of musical whiplash I feel like the decision to put the listener in juxtaposition between two very different vibes keeps them interested in the track, preventing it from melding into the background. I found the lyrics a bit too referential at times. Decent. 3.5/5 The Grave and the Constant Surprised by the sonic variety when it comes to the sampling. Great instrumental around the chorus. While the lyrics there don't really do much the horns and guitar makes it more than worth repeating. The verses don't exactly captivate, but I guess the performance adds to an enjoyable atmosphere. Good. 4/5 Scooby Snacks Pretty cool bass sound. Interesting Pulp Fiction sample. Paints a pretty fun fantasy with the storytelling. The slight abrasiveness of the vocals on the chorus makes the song seem lighter and less serious. Combined with the ridiculous euphemism for weed the track seems pretty fun and likable. Has some personality to it. Decent. 3.5/5 Smoke 'Em I'm unsure about this instrumental, feels too cinematic with that lingering horn. Doesn't fit that well with the lyrical content. The chorus isn't great either, goes on too long providing little of substance. The performance on the verses is fine, I like the raspiness in his voice. Average. 2.5/5 Bombin' The L Was not expecting that Smoke on the Water distorted guitar riff. Free Bird sample is weird. Can't really get behind the premise, at least it's not boring though I find it quite messy. Average. 2.5/5 I Can't Get With That Love the instrumental. Really smooth. The political commentary comes across in a simple and clear way. The guitar solo adds some weight to the track, and sits really well on top of the mellow beat. Effective track. Decent. 3.5/5 King of New York Funky disco beat. The flow feels really old school. Charismatic and fun. Feels sort of effortless. Love the chaotic instrumental towards the end. Decent. 3.5/5 We Have All The Time In The World Pleasant. His voice is kinda weak for this type of song. The breathines contrasts a bit too much against the warm instrumental. Having this here definitely adds to the album by providing some warmth and melody. Surprisingly well executed despite its limitations. Decent. 3.5/5 Bear Hug Was expecting something like this after the slower previous track. Fun energy. Simple but works. I like the harmonica sample. Feels a bit dumb, but it's not bad. Fine. 3/5 Come Find Yourself Takes a bit too long to get going. I don't like the whispering at all. Slow and boring. The flow is really predictable on the verses. Really repetitive. Dislike. 2/5 Crime And Punishment God-awful beat. Sounds like an alarm. Way too loud and mechanical. Improves, but loses all sense of individuality. Has some alright commentary, though the strokes seem a bit too broad for it to actually be saying anything. Dislike. 2/5 Methadonia Smooth. I like the instrumental a lot. The vibe is immaculate. Kinda confused by the lyrics, not sure if pro or anti drugs. I like the energy of the track, the performance goes very well with the instrumental. Decent. 3.5/5 Not sure what I'm gonna call this. Strange and confused is the first thing that comes to mind. I'm genuinely not sure what to think. There's a lot of instrumental moments that sound nice, though I'm not even sure if it's original work or a sample I'm hearing half the time. But even if I find it quite pleasant at times I'm never really hearing anything I find too exceptional. Most tracks are just average to decent, never really doing anything too special with their sound. The flows are boring and predictable and while the performances do feel pretty thought out they never really stick in my mind afterwards. While varied they never really seem to land on a style which they excel at leaving each track feeling a bit undercooked. Lyrically is where they lose me the most, there are very few memorable lines, it's fairly repetitive and the commentary is often too broad to have any real meaning. When it isn't it's difficult to separate satire from their real feelings. There are also so many referential comparissons which makes the tracks sort of predictable. I do however find enjoyment in how little they take themselves seriously endearing, and I find the way they embrace their flaws also to be charming. And while not every single strange sample or experiment works I appreciate them for trying to sound different. It leaves for a more fulfilling experience when the band doesn't feel like they have to safe everything. I'm gonna be a bit harsher with my score and give it a 2.5/5 leaning closer to a 3/5. Even if it doesn't reflect the individual track ratings. I think individually many tracks are stronger than the final rating, but as an album it's just so messy that I can't help but deduct points from it. Fave track. The Grave and the Constant Least fave track. Crime and Punishment

Fave lyric: “Ladi dadi, free John Gotti”

This album is like fast food, I can tell ots not great but sometimes it just feels good. Some of these songs are just dumb, but the production and sampling is really good and sometimes it just hits right. High 3.

Like if I’m splitting hairs, I’ll say 2.75…. It’s alright, some songs have a groove. But the mumble-core rapping is not my jam.

Enjoyed the start quite a bit. But got bored towards the end. Still a good album overall

Liked this more that I was expecting

Kind of a weird off beat hip hop. Pretty fun.

Fun mix of a ton of different styles. I enjoyed it.

-this is some rather inoffensive rap rock I guess. these guys are not doing much in the way of innovating the rap game but I actually enjoyed the album much more than I thought I would. every song was catchy and fun to listen to. ergo pretty good to an extent. don’t think I’d listen to again but it was super fun to listen to while passing the time -Favorites are The Grave And The Constant and King of New York

nice and chilled, can see why the singles became the singles as the rest are pretty forgettable filler

Cooler than I thought it would be!

Smooth and slick album, is it great, not really, is it fun to listen to, absolutely. The beats are fun and easy going, with a nice, thick, bass. The vocals are smooth and blend in perfectly. The songs are usually somewhat simple, but every now and again, there is an interesting electric guitar riff or solo, which is right up my alley. The band seem to blend hip-hop and rock in a similar way to other artists in the 90s (RATM, Beastie Boys, etc.), but with less success and originality, creating monotonous and commercial music for the most part. The album also has a certain Latin vibe to it. Was between 2 and 3, since I would listen to it again as it's an easy listen for work/chilling, I give it a 3.

This is a relaxing listen on a drive. Good flow, easy to zone out with. Didn't blow me away. Some great samples used throughout the album but I'm more impressed by the bands they're sampling like Funkadelic. Strong 2 weak 3. I think the day I was having while listening to it gets it the bump up.

Fun energy. Interesting compositions. I remember at least the chorus of Scooby Snacks. Gives me a Beck vibe. Not sure if there is any connection there. This is better on headphones than car stereo for sure. I like the Blues vibes. Nice flow.

Interesting. Better than I expected based on what I knew, which set a pretty low bar. Not an essential album, though. Definitely more appropriate albums from the time/genre than this to be on this list. Half stars would be a great option.

I did not think I would enjoy this as much as I did. Still not probably my type of music, but I was amused by several songs.

Better than I expected but also eminently forgettable

Man, talk about a time capsule from the 90s. From the music production to all the Quentin Tarantino references, this album really encapsulates everything that made the 90s what it was. With that being said, it’s definitely a product of its time, but I’ll admit, “Scooby Snacks” was a super hot track back in the day.

Certainly of an era.

Not fabulous, not bad. Seemed to take itself pretty lightly, a bit to tongue-in-cheek. Surprised to see John Barry/Hal David cover, that made me like it more.

Solid 3, good memories of this album, maybe not as good as I remember, but still fairly unique sound.

Ok album just feels making a bit of maturity both musically and lyrically.

This feels very much like a 3. Fairly enjoyable tbh, but not really very special.

A couple good songs. Rest are fine.

Goofy at times but kinda fun most of the time

I appreciate the fusion of genres and how these guys are just jamming and having fun with their music. They almost have a defiant attitude in their approach to music, making them criminals I guess. And in this, they invite their listeners to join in the fun

Honestly listening to this album felt like we were just cruising with the top down shooting the breeze with these fellas, talking about rock bottom 3.5 rounded down to 3/5

When it leans into fusing hip-hop with other genres, it does something interesting. But when it doesn't, my goodness does this just sound like generic and forgettable mid-90s rap.

Nice and mellow mostly

The Good: We are invited on a treasure hunt! The Bad: What would happen if you can’t find yourself? The Ugly: Worse, what happens when you do find yourself, and FLC show??? They are criminals after all… I don’t like rap… I think I’ve been clear about this. However, these Fun Lovin’ Criminals have done the impossible, and made me enjoy the album enough NOT to score them below 3* The Scooby Snacks is just lovely. The overall blend of musical styles, as well as the lovely fact that we are hearing actual instruments being used, well; lovely. So, though I will downgrade them, this is a 3 1/2* fo-sho!!!

This is better than I expected it to be. Fun songs. Good grooves.

The Grave and the Constant is already a fave, really chill vibe. I Can't Get with That is a 2nd fave, Scrooby Snacks was oversold to me, it's number 3 in my list of songs on this album. Would listen to this album again.

Really chill, enjoyed it for what it was, stand out being scooby snacks

All the 🌿 were 🌿ing, 🌿ing...

No idea what to expect form this one... seems like old school hip hop again. This shit is good though man, they have an interesting rock element going on along with that good old school funky hip hop, I dig it. Gets a little old as the album goes on, still not bad, but gets pretty samey.

I enjoyed this and would listen again.

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Never listened to it in my life. A couple of really great songs on here. But also surrounded by a lot of songs that are forgettable.

Really enjoyed this one more than I thought I would.

It was good as background music. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to find.

Some nice songs

Liked this more than I thought I would.

Not bad.

That's a blast from the past - Scooby Snacks

My expectations for this one were pretty low but it's a fun record

Ok but nothing special

Non disturbing

Carina 'Scooby Snacks'

I suppose I am still confused how this made the list, but whatever.

I still basically know every word to Scooby Snacks but outside that there isn’t much to get excited here. Very average.

Meh, sure.

It's like the chili you get from your Grandma in the home instead of what you get in San Antonio. Not too spicy but seems like it is missing a kick. Good beats

Not listened to this before and wasn't sure if I would like it. Know and like the the big hits on this, fun loving criminal and Scooby snacks, and found the other tracks to be quite funky and fun. Must say I have a soft spot for Huey Morgan as I regularly listen to his Radio 6 show on a Saturday. He seems a genuine and decent bloke and was a source of comfort for many during the dark days of Covid and lockdown. Unfortunately, the other band members seem to have stitched him up and now trade under the name fun loving criminals but are no better than a tribute act. Still this album is good fun but not good enough for 5 or even 4 stars. It's a 3 from me.

One of the more enjoyable hip hop albums I've gotten

non malissimo, non benissimo

Genuinely surprised by how unique and varied this album is. Most of the rap albums we've had so far have been fairly repetitive.

Ganska bra album faktiskt. En solid trea iaf.

Meh. Not sure how that is an all time great.

Just fine for chumps (one might say). Tuneful and bouncy and fun, mid-tempo and inoffensive, but nothing like mind-blowing or earth-shattering or life-changing. In fact, pretty mediocre overall, generic and bland and no better than replacement level in the rock-rap-with-a-touch-reggae sub-sub-genre. Beats decent, nice instrumental and production flourishes, though with a tendency to over-crunchy guitars (nothing at all would be lost if these were cut). While definitely inoffensive and pretty likable overall, the title of “Scooby Snacks” and lyrics of “King of New York” (“Lotti-dotti/Free John Gotti”) tips one off about just how seriously to take this. “All The Time in the World” is a mostly winning departure from the rest of the record.

Saw these guys open for U2 in ‘97. “Scooby Snacks” was kinda fun back then. Never listened further than that. Didn’t really need to, but it isn’t terrible. Remember when smoking weed could be your whole personality? Extra star for being real NYC scumbags.

This was a fun album to listen to. High 3

not as good as I remembering it being, odd choice for this list though

It was all right. There were some songs that I very much enjoyed. I don't know how many I'll go into the rotation though

The Fun Lovib' Criminal

twas ok.

Pretty fun and very 90s.

Fun album but for some reason it feels like they are missing something or just maybe lacking some kind of energy. Gives me Atmosphere vibes but IMO Atmosphere should be here on this list over these guys.

Second half was better

Not what I was expecting. Really funky with rock elements mixed in. Usually not a fan of hip hop on its own, but genre mixing is awesome. Highlights: The Fun Lovin' Criminal Smoke 'Em

Fun listen but nothing special. Favourite: "Scooby Snacks" 2,5

it had some good some bad some mediocre. 2.75

Fun time with this one.

Fun loving? Yes, absolutely. These guys are very fun and at times pure of heart. It’s infectious at best. However, it often comes at a cost of subpar lyricism and delivery. It’s interesting, they’re at an intersection of rock and rap, but not at all in the nu-metal linkin park way. “All the Time In The World” is the highlight for me here. Good instrumental, good vibe. And a light 3 for those good vibes

I’m not really sure who this is for. It’s not electronic enough to be techno or whatever you call that music it’s not rock enough. It’s not hip-hop enough. It’s not rap enough. I’m not sure who really would go for this.

Album 573 of 1001 Fun Lovin' Criminals - Come Find Yourself (1976) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Perhaps my favorite hip hop album, yet. None of the "I'm so awesome and will mess up anybody who messes with me" bullshit. Good lyrics and some good musicianship thrown in. A little rock coming into play. Even had some melodies showing themselves.

Not much lovin' but fun in parts. Genre eventually started to drag as the album went on. Can imagine it being people's thing but not really mine. Nothing too offensive though.

Decent album. Not really my speed, but fun none the less.

There's a spectrum of rap-rock. It starts with Run DMC using rock as a Trojan horse to gain a wider audience for hip hop, and ends (more or less) with the heavy rap rock of the late 90s (Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, etc). Fun Lovin' Criminals seem to fit somewhere in the middle. They're not particularly innovative and not particularly cringeworthy either. Well maybe the whole 'drugs and crime are fun' shtick is a bit ridiculous, but fine. The music probably filled a small niche during it's heyday and does incorporate some unexpectedly jazzy elements. Had I discovered this when I was young, I might have liked it. Now it feels a bit boring. It's fine for what it is but life is short and there is better music out there.

Interesting mix, rock and hip-hop. But nothing really special I think warrant Being on this list.

Never got into this lot back in the day as they always seemed like a bit of a novelty band to me. On listening now that may have been slightly harsh but I still don’t really get the appeal that much.

Roligt och annorlunda album

Didn’t think I would care for it, but was pleasantly surprised. Interesting arrangements behind some of the songs, mix of instruments including guitar and keyboard.

kind of a guilty pleasure

It was good - bit out of the ordinary heard it too many times though it’s starting to be one of those songs and albums that grates

Was decent back in the day and they were good fun live.

Not as bad as I originally pegged it to be. Surprised to hear that this is where the Scooby Snacks song came from

Good enough.

Nothing groundbreaking or critically acclaimed here, but it was a fun listen. Was close to giving it a 4, but it was too long.

Never heard this album before. I liked the arrangements but not that memorable otherwise.

It's an album of stoner rock

I remember buying this album on the strength of hearing "Scooby Snacks" on the radio. I was very disappointed. Songs all basically sound the same, but I could see maybe listening to it when I'm in a certain mood.

This was fun. And cool to encounter Huey Morgan, who I only know from his Radio 6 show

As a hip hop album, it's less than stellar; as a smooth, late-night chillout album however, it's pretty dope.

Everybody be cool this is a robbery! Found them slightly annoying at the time but I did quite like the two good songs you heard everywhere. I never bothered to seek out the album but my friends liked it. Several tracks sound like Odelay-era Beck. Aside from the two good songs. I also enjoyed Smoke em if you got em. I never liked King of New York. All the time in the world cover - erm..yeah. I look back upon them fondly now I guess, and I like Huey's 6 music show. Better than Stereo MCs anyway. As far as music that fully lived and died in the 90s, this is pretty good!

Gives me House of Pain vibes

Interesting, not too bad as a hiphop album

For what it is, it’s ok

Good fun opening track and obvious Scooby, the rest of the albums wanders off down the Newyork alleyways getting lost having dougnuts and just slowly turning into modern day background music.

this album is nawwwwt bad at all... the tracks are arranged in such a creative way, moving from more of a Beastie Boys-esque sound into a super unexpected ambient and chill few tracks like We Have All the Time in the World and Methadonia (EPIC FINAL TRACK!!!) overall it was not boring, but was not particularly attention grabbing or memorable either....... 3/5!

Pretty sure I’m the only person who remembers Scott Snacks in 2024

Wow I didn't expect all the hate in the reviews. It's far from perfect but it's definitely far better than some of the other albums on this list

Pretty neat. Classic 90s hip hop.

A self-aware, sample heavy NYC rock/rap trio, popular with white kids - it’s the Beastie Boys, right? NOT!!! It’s the Fun Lovin’ Criminals (with the all important apostrophe). I actually enjoyed this quite a bit more than I was expecting, particularly when they slowed things down a little and cut back on the samples. The highlight for me was a delicious cover of John Barry’s We Have All the Time in the World.

White boys hip-hop. It's not bad actually, the music is a nice blend of rock and laid back jazz/funk. Not sure it is such an essential record though.

This is the very definition of a three star album for me. Some good tracks, a bit of filler, not awful, but not interesting enough to listen to again.

I generally enjoyed this.

90s flashback af

Fell to my knees in a Wendy’s as Scooby Snacks came on and turned my review from a 4 to a 3. This album is actually a pretty fun musical cocktail. The nu-rap vocals mixed with funky beats and a little jazzy/SKA garnish end up complimenting each other very well. The problem is, this album is PAINFULLY 90s, and the subject matter is some of the most mind-numbing, dated garbage I’ve ever heard. It’s lyrically about 1 level above limp bizkit tier. 3/5 for the sounds

idk what ben is on about but the pulp fiction sample in scooby snacks went hard. but the chorus did suck lol. this was an interesting album for sure with a unique sound. i’ll give it a 3 bc it kind of worked well, but i def will not revisit or talk about this ever again

Enjoyed it, never heard the full album

Legitimately pretty good fun

Not quite irredeemably stupid thanks to the goofiness.

I was definitely thinking this was going to be a 4 star to me. There is a lot to love in this imo, but then I seem to like albums that are doing some experimenting. I think the sound of the rap over the more rock music in this case is mostly successful. However the back half of this fell off a bit for me so I have to deduct a star. I'd be curious what I think after a second listen.

Who wouldn’t want to run around robbing banks all wacked on scobey snacks. Come Find Yourself is fun, all the way through 7.1/10

More FLC hey

So yeah. It was hip hop plus.

I think its pretty okay. This type of lyricism and flow I pass on usually. The instrumentals are great for the most part, but the vocals just dont match

The Scooby Snacks band?!?!? Look this is a fun album and all but how pissed are G Love & Special Sauce that THESE guys are on the list and they’re probably not?!?

Innocuous, but why's this here?

Real talent, and fun, but it's not really my thing. Much respect, and I liked it much more than I thought I would, but it's not something I'd spin more than rarely - just not the sort of thing that resonates with my life. Though I bet it was a banger if you were the right age in '95! Also, a little too long.

Pleasantly surprised. Figured it was going to be entirely gimmicky as I remembered scooby snacks back in the day which is still a fun song. A more subtle hip hop rock mix. Fun at the beginning, more hard hitting on the back half. A fun time, though maybe a little long.

Kind of fun.

white boy rap from the 90s

I only know these guys as the “Scooby Snacks” guys, so wasn’t aware that they were a potentially significant group. After listening, I’m not really sure why this album was included. There are quite a bit of rock n roll samples featured which I guess seems unique at first, but then you realize the Beastie Boys were doing that for almost a decade prior. The album as a whole is pretty easy to listen to and doesn’t take itself too seriously, so I’ll give it that. Just don’t know what this album has to set itself apart from the gigantic rap acts of the 90’s. I wasn’t really buying what they were selling if that makes any sense. Like a 5/10 for me.

Would probably give this 3.5. I always thought of them as a one hit wonder but this album was really good start to finish. Definitely worth another listen or two.

A bit tame for my taste and mostly forgettable.

Undeniably fun. The beats are fantastic, the aesthetic, 90's pulp fiction levels of cool. But the lyrics are average at best, and you can barely make out what he's saying half the time. Still enjoyed it though, but I don't see myself returning to this any time soon.

Starts really strong and fades really hard. Can't be one of the best albums ever

It has been probably 17 years since I last thought about the Scooby Snacks song. I was surprised to see this album on here at all, but it ended up being a fun listen. While these songs often follow the rap trope of being criminals as their name implies....they are indeed fun loving about it. This is a nice contrast to the seriousness of an Ice Tea or Cube. Cube is so serious about his crimes that it makes it sound dumb to be giving a confession on an album, but these fun loving guys are just messing around and don't take themselves too seriously. Favorite track "Scooby Snacks" 3/5

Smooth delivery of very wordy but laid back verses over jazzy rock beats. It all works nicely in the extremely 90s alt/underground hip hop style. It makes sense that had a way bigger impact in the UK than the US as this was so out of step with the mainstream of 90s US rap in the mid 90s, but fits in perfectly with the downtempo, trip-hop and late madchester sound and generally fun-seeking ladish attitude of British pop of the time. The beats are really nicely constructed with soul samples for cool horn sounds, chilled out synth parts, and mesmerizing drum loops. The hard rock choruses & riffs really let the songs down though, they just whack on the distortion and hit some big chords to raise the energy, really jarring and ultimately flat/dull despite the aim.

So I really enjoyed “Come Find Yourself” by the Fun Lovin’ Criminals – as I had never heard of them before… Really liked the vibe of the album, and both the music and lyrics were both extremely well-done… Not a bad track on the album, and the diversity of sound throughout, was very much appreciated – and overall, just a fun album start-to-finish… There were a couple of tracks that grabbed me a bit more, and they were – “Passive/Aggressive” “Scooby Snacks” “I Can’t Get With That” “Crime & Punishment” Nothing life-changing here, but a solid and fun effort, and deserving of a 3 from me…

Better than expected. Seems like their lyrics are sometimes more about sound and rhythm. Other times they're just dumb.

Checks out, they do seem like they're having fun

hmmmmm

The singles stand up pretty well - Fun Lovin' Criminals, Scooby Snacks, (the one with the Tarantino samples), and King Of New York, all of which were heavily played on the radio and in pubs and clubs when the record came out. The rest is pretty inconsequential, albeit with some nice trip hop shuffles and grooves, and some decent guitar parts.

J'apprécie quelques chansons, dont I can't get with that ET We have all the time in the world, qui font très Midnight Shutdown.

Despite misgivings about this collective being massive frauds, I found the album was worth a listen and pretty chilled, even without a big spliff in my hand. I won't be attending any nostalgia trips but a solid trieze.

This was alright but didn’t wow me. Not sure i’d listen to again

Never really listened to them and enjoyed this. Did it blow my mind? Nope. Was it a totally fine and fun album to play on background while doing whatever? Yep.

Interesting. I didn’t mind this album

Like the other reviews state - this is okay, but it's really not wild. If the Beastie Boys are your fav you might love this.

much better than i expected.

Never heard of this or ifi have I don't remember. It did seem slightly familiar. I liked Scooby Snacks and so did the UK apparently. There were a couple of good songs but generally nothing that wowed me.

Some stellar singles, but most of the tracks are a bit to laid back for my tastes

Takes me back to being 13. Could do with being 20 minutes shorter and a few tracks less. But good.

solid!

This music is a slippery slope. This one rides the ridge without tumbling into terrible.

Nr. 172/1001 Fun Lovin' Criminal 3/5 Passive/Agressive 3/5 The Grave and the Constant 3/5 Scooby Snacks 3/5 Smoke 'Em 4/5 Bombin' the L 3/5 I Can't Get With That 3/5 King of New York 3/5 We Have All The Time In The World 3/5 Bear Hug 2/5 Come Find Yourself 3/5 Crime And Punishment 3/5 Methadonia 3/5 Average: 3,0 Alright album. Probably won't listen again.

Rap-Rock-Jazz?

In no way essential but also a fun old listen A generous 3

It's a great blend

This was a great use of sampling (fun to hear both "Freebird" and "Smoke on the Water" sampled on "Bombin' The L") but otherwise it was not too great. I'd never heard of this group and I now know why. Not essential hip-hop in any way.

Has a lot of fun guitar is it. Did like the album but it left less of an impact than I would’ve liked it to.

I kinda liked some of the stuff they were selling here. They... _SEEMED_ like a light, breezy group, something to listen to and bop your head to. But some of the songs did feel VERY repetitive (I'm looking at you, "Smoke 'Em"). And even though the songs were gritty, they were goofy at the same time. The dichotomy didn't work for me as much as I was hoping it would. I mean, I got the idea from the first song, but it just wore thin after a while for me. ANd that cover of "All The TIme In The World," yikes. Top songs: ""The Fun Lovin' Criminal", "The Grave and the Constant", "Scooby Snacks"

This album was better than I thought it would be. A one-hit wonder in my mind, for Scooby Snacks, they brought more than that on this album. I especially liked the funky upbeat tempos and use of the trumpet, as well as some catchy guitar riffs. The opener Fun Lovin' Criminals was a lot of fun for those reasons, and the second song Passive / Aggressive was a little boring but fun for those reasons (when turned up a notch) in the choruses. Despite ripping off Smoke on the Water and Free Bird (I guess sampling for this rap rock album) I also found Bombin the L fun and funky with a cool guitar and trumpet combo. Similar for King of New York. Not the same combos, but Bear Hug and Crime and Punishment were kind of cool too. And so many tracks that felt perfect for a Tarantino or Guy Ritchie crime drama/comedy. It just felt...stylish. The title track was a good example of that. Still, I don't think I can give the album a 4. There's far too many better albums and I don't think this one is that notable in the grand scheme of things. But I enjoyed it. And that's more than I thought I'd say when I saw the album pop up.

A slight and silly listen of alternative rap.

It's that form of 90s rap rock that's usually pretty cringe, but this is done pretty well. It's similar to trip hop with the jazz samples and downtempo grooves, but has tons of energy, some rocking beats, and catchy pop hooks. It's nothing outstanding or innovative, with the standout tracks just being the louder and catchier hits. It is consistent, and I appreciate the diversity in each deep cut, although some ideas do feel gimmicky. Very accessible and inoffensive, it's something you could chill with in the background.

Interesting album. I like the Pulp Fiction reference. These guys seem like some standard 90's hip hop rebels. I can get behind it. 3 stars

Pretty chill album that was nice to vibe to during work. There were a couple samples that I recognized, but I wasn't keeping track of any of the titles during this one. One or two songs I really liked on this one, otherwise was pretty middle of the road. We'll call this one a 3+.

I think I need to listen to that album again because I had it on while working, but I could not figure out what genre that was. It almost seemed like a playlist on shuffle because it would switch from rap, to reggae, to almost rock. Overall though it had some really solid instrumental work which had me hooked. Just still slightly confused by it

Chilled and easy to listen to but not very catchy.

I remember thinking this was cheesy when it dropped, but it actually is better than I remember it. Overall, cohesive and listenable. Not great, but pretty good vibe. Vocals and guitars are chill.

I guess I hit rock bottom on 4/20/2024. According to the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, if ya got em, smoke em. But if ya don’t got em, ya hit rock bottem (sic?). I had no scooby snacks. But I did have a chance to listen to one of the most mid-90s albums imaginable. I absolutely remember “Scooby Snacks.” And remember the general vibe that Fun Lovin’ Criminals fit snugly in. Rap rock before rap rock was abrasive and aggressive. But what was this one-hit wonder doing on the 1001? As usual, the answer is England. For some reason, FLC really caught on in the UK. Good for them. Even at rock bottom, I still had fun with “Come Find Yourself.”

I don't know what to say about this. It wasn't bad but I also didn't love it. I guess it's a 3 and move on.

A real sense of place and time with this one; funky psych guitairs, vinyl scratching, gravel voiced rapping; all very evocative of NYC in the late 80s/90s. A surprising diversity of approach and songwriting. Not all of it lands but still holds up well.

Sounds like Kid Rock wanted to be these guys but also heard Limp Bizkit on the way to the studio. (Kid Rock - Limp Bizkit)+ musical talent ≈ Fun Lovin' Criminals

some really boring songs but some songs that really got me in the mood and im bumping and bopping along with my entire body

decent

The instrumentation is excellent. The lyrics and concepts have not stood up as well.

I don't know how I felt about this album. Was it a bop? Yes. Was it something I could find myself signing along to? Yes. Should I be or do I have any context to connect with what they are singing about? Probably not. At times it feels like they are romanticizing a lifestyle that at times I don't think should be romanticized, but that might be my privilege goggles talking. Maybe its not romanticizing but putting a satirical spin on things (Methodonia) or they just need to laugh and be proud because it is a world that is so put down.

Better than I thought it would be, but I did have low expectations. Sort of Beastie Boys light. Favourite track Scooby Snacks

A stylistically really varied album, it's hip-hop with a flavour of rock, jazz and many other genres. I also like the mid-1990s vibe to it which doesn't sound dated. The songwriting drags a bit towards the end and overall nothing stands out, but nevertheless this was a pleasant album to listen to - 3.5 out of 5.

Kind of fun album. I was surprised to see it pop up though. It was a bit like seeing that Kid Rock somehow made the list.

It's a classic 90s album. No more no less.

Hell yeah

Scooby Snacks. It was popular for a minute. A sound very similar to others in the era. Nothing special.

Some good beats here, chill music, nice mix of jazz/funk/rock, and even the guitar solo on "I Can't Get with That" is solid. Honestly I'd be down for a totally instrumental album like this. But the lyrics/singing/rapping just don't do it for me. Still, a pretty fun album to spin. Might return to it on a hot summer day while outside grilling.

i had fun with this album at first, a cool combination of a more bluesy/jazzy sound with hip hop. as we got towards the end of the album, i felt like it was kind of one-note. felt like i was just listening to a variation on the same thing for a good portion of the 50 minute runtime. it's not that i thought it was bad, i just got a little tired of it three quarters through the album.

Yea, this is a lot of fun

Fun Lovin’ Criminals is very, very nineties rap/rock. It is a bit dated overall and there is nothing ground breaking here. That said it’s still fun and takes me back to my high school and college years. Scooby Snacks was on the radio all of the time my senior year of high school. That said, this is another album better for background than intent listening. The beats are better than the vocals by far. 3

That’s another 3 for me. It’s really not a bad album, it’s just kind of unmemorable. I really think the production is the obvious standout here – only 2 or 3 tracks ever really fully got my attention lyrically, and the amount of mixed genres with hip-hop sensibilities does a much better (albeit admittedly less energetic) job than that shitty Kid Rock album we listened to. If we were going solely on production, it's at least a 4. Crime & Punishment is probably my standout here, either that or King of New York. Much like some of the other albums we’ve listened to, the biggest issue is that it’s just a bit too long and a bit too repetitive in some spots to not notice, and those little moments just build up more and more every time, and that's why as a whole album, I can't go any higher than a 3. (also i don't know where else to put this but i just kept hearing lotus juice in his voice the whole time LOL)

Hier en daar vrij relaxte beats, maar die tegelijkertijd weer heel played out klinken (the grave and the constant).

Better than I thought it'd be, although massively of it's time. I've not knowingly ever played this before but I seemingly recognised every track, probably soundtracked multiple stoned evenings at university

It's a fun lovin hip hop album, a solid 3.5 stars

I don't mind this. It's fine. Scooby Snacks is a banger but in general I don't think the album was that good but it's good to have in the background and not bad

"Runnin' around, robbing banks all whacked off of scooby snacks..." The highlights on this (title tracks, scooby snacks, methadonia, smoke 'em") are brilliant, but the deeper cuts aren't quite enough to make this a memorable listen as an album. That said, this is the first thing in the queue next time I'm high.

I feel quite conflicted about this, almost like it’s a guilty pleasure. Yes, they are Novelty and puerile and seemingly taking the piss while taking a lot of of money. But I can’t deny it’s a good choice of samples, some very catchy tunes and sometimes I could not help but sing along.

I always liked the vibe of this group, though I find this album long on repetition and short on substance. I'm a bigger fan of the follow-up, 100% Columbian, though I don't know that it stands the test of time enough to be a classic. This one doesn't, but it was fun to revisit.

unremarkable, but pleasant enough. they seem to have a good sense of humor, which i dig.

Favourite tracks; scooby snacks; the fun loving criminal

Thoughts running through my head while listening to Scooby Snacks: “Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you?” “The famous, most groovy, Bellbottoms (Hu!) BELLBOTTOMS (HU!) Yeaaaahhh (HU!)” “B-a-b-y, Baby” P.S. Oh, I miss iPods.

It's one of these rather harmless rock rap combos. Not bad and groovier than many other albums in a similar direction but nothing I would've put on this list.

I remember a couple of these from the 90s.. if you don’t take it very seriously (and I don’t think you are meant to) there’s a lot of fun songs here.

Unexpected but enjoyable "fusion-hip-hop" album

I’ve heard wordy, silly hip hop done better (see: De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest). Still not bad though.

It was okay, like a low 3. Wasn’t exactly my style or my taste but I enjoyed it enough as a background music.
