Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Not a bad album but one of the least essential of Bowie’s 70s albums. It’s more important as a transitional stage in his career. Overall not as consistent as his great albums
I've never liked Golden Years. The only David Bowie song that just sounds so square to me I can't take it. Other than that? Fine Bowie. This is just fine Bowie. Not a huge standout, but I do like the production on it - a good listen.
Fine, but never quite leaped out of the background for me. This has gotta be the 9th or 27th Bowie record on this list, no?
Some cool arrangements! But just not grabbing me very strongly.
Not bad, considering I don’t really like Bowie. The funk vibes helped.
Cool, but unremarkable.
Solid bowie
Intro of the first song is hard to listen to. Not bad. Just not pleasing! Love the rest of the album.
Decent felt short which I guess is a backhanded compliment.
all songs are 5/10 except Golden Years
Bowie himself said it best: devoid of spirit, but fascinating.
Nice album, Crazy to think how Ziggy Stardust was done already. David Bowie managed to keep reinventing himself.
its cool. not as good as the other bowie albums imo but stil a good listen
Always enjoy Bowie. Every album is different.
The Thin White Duke. Bowie’s cocaine album. He said he didn’t remember a lot of it. Everyone loves it 5/5. Not me.
3.5/5 Golden Years earns this entire review
never heard this bowie album - doesn't hook me at all. A light 3 stars
Golden Years! other than that... meh
So David. Much Bowie. Sweet and inoffensive. Not compelling.
short
A fascinating sound experiment on the way to the Berlin Trilogy.
Compared to other Bowie albums, I found this one to be a bit mundane. Good to have on in the background but did not take much notice.
Not bad.
Nice
Golden Years is a banger. Rest of the album isn't standout, but Bowie is never bad
Alveg ágætt.
wild is the wind albumu tasimis.. nina simone kadar iyi olmasa da cok guzel bir cover olmus zaten ilk dinledigimde aglamistm.. 5/5 bir cover ama 5/5 bir album degil
Raskas muoto heikentää uudelleenkuunteluarvoa, mutta sisältö kantaa pitkälle: mitä tulee koukkuihin, Bowie on tässä onnistunut omaksumaan mustalle musiikille tyypillisen, ekonomisen sofistikoituneisuuden paremmin kuin millään muulla levyllä. Ja TVC15:n New Orleans -piano on riemastuttava yllätys.
Not much to say about this one. I appreciated how the tracks were a bit lengthier and dynamic. Had some nice funk to it and the lyrics were mesmerizing.
Short
I think this is the 3rd of 4th David Bowie album that I've gotten. I still enjoy his biggest hits, but my initial impression of these albums has been eh it's ok music. I'm happy to have listened to it but I don't think it will join my normal rotation of music I play.
Golden Years is fantastic, but the rest of the album kind of misses for me personally. I do love most David Bowie though.
Mixed album as most David Bowie.
Groovy. I see how people can love Bowie so much. Can be a bit jaunty but overall very nice
Classic 3.5/5

Good album but far from his best. Better after a second listen. Low key funk, a bit of edgey electro glam. This was the period where Bowie was super into coke and fascism. I wouldn't say that's noticeable but the overall impression is that the album is a little bit flippant and lacked a bit of focus. I'd listen again but I'd always rather listen to 4-5 other Bowie albums I think. Better after a second listen though.
It’s ok. Lots of long songs
Oh boy here we go! It's good without a doubt but I never really super enjoyed Bowie. The record is good... It's just not a masterpiece to me. First Listen?: Y Fav. Tracks: Golden Years Rating: 3/5
3/3 it's bowie
Good for a Bowie album. Still not a fan of his voice.
david bowie - station to station (1976) notes - had only heard golden years from this album (listen to the car seat headrest cover) fav song - stay - the groove is so good - great guitar solo - im dancing but im scared least fav - station to station - like 3 songs put together, second half of the song felt like it went on too long 3/5
David Bowie, nothing else needs to be said. Great musician, classic album.
It seems to me that every Bowie album is on the list. Not saying this album doesn't deserve to be here just pointing out facts.
Started hot and I slowly lost interest over the course of the album but still very enjoyable.
Always something of interest in a Bowie album.
Fuckin Love that Bowie bloke. This album? Yeah, it's alright.
Not bad.
Dated
A few nice tracks but bowie is a little out there for my current preferences
Wasn't a bad album. Turns out I like some Bowie, but a whole album might be too much
Another day, another Bowie album. It's fine
Golden Years is definitely something that catches my attention.
Golden Years is stella but the rest didn’t do much for me. M
A couple moments caught my attention, but overall it was… fine.
Not my favorite Bowie, but still a lot to like. The piano rock vibes that come out in this album are really fun.
Lively and free, Bowie's voice sounds powerful and the tracks are musically dense though it occasionally borders on self-indulgent with the track lengths and repetition. Not sure on the cultural context, ie where this fits amongst his personas, but undoubtedly a fun album with one or two of his classics.
Casually listened and enjoyed all the way through. Definitely worth a revisit. I love the opening of the album with is pulsing/whirling pull.
Other than TVC15, this is very good.
Weird drug fucked mess
Pretty alright
Hmm very interesting. I understand the significance of Bowie but haven't listen to too much of his music.
Weakest track is the title track. Golden Years is yet another Bowie classic, but TVC15 is equally good. The rest of the record is a bit lackluster.
I really like David Bowie but this definitely isn’t my favorite album of his. There was a couple good songs but most were pretty forgettable
Not my favourite Bowie record but decent.
pretty good
This is fine. Never been a huge Bowie fan but I appreciate his creativity across music and culture.
I generally find David Bowie’s music to be underwhelming compared to all of the hype it gets and I think this album is a good example of it. Nothing on here was bad but nothing was exceptional to me. Maybe you “had to be there”? Something is just missing in it for me.
Bowie is good
Hieno muttei lukeudu aivan bowie lemppareitteni kärkeen! 3/5
Still just can’t get past lukewarm on Bowie.
Ok stuff, but I probably wouldn't listen again.
didn't realise it had finished and moved on to other albums, very much background noise
Mola, pero no tanto.
Seemed like classic Bowie? I dunno
This is David Bowie's tenth album and it can be described musically as an art rock or funk rock album. It was received well by critics and is regarded as one of Bowie's more significant works. Although the following didn't seem to affect the quality of this album, Bowie was addicted to cocaine while recording this album and doesn't remember much from this period. This Bowie album did not appeal to me, as none of the six songs stuck out to me as great. I did like the theme of the album being loosely tied to his film "The Man Who Fell to Earth" in addition to the creation of his Thin White Man character. In conclusion, there are other Bowie albums that I feel are much better than this one.
My 2nd David Bowie album on this list and this one didn't connect as much with me. It's fine but it just didn't feel exceptional. Maybe I'm missing something with Bowie but I just haven't found that in yet.
The more I listened the more interested I got. I can't say this won me over totally, but it certainly engaged me enough that I think I'd like to go back and also begin exploring his discography. The story and the persona behind this are pretty interesting.
So this album is the result of David Bowie doing so much cocaine that he can’t remember making it. Hmmmmm… The title track starts really kicks into gear about halfway through and maintains my interest afterward. I thoroughly enjoy the 1:00+ intro for Stay as well as it’s extended guitar outro. Golden years is so fun. The claps are a nice touch. I think this track highlights the best use of Bowie’s voice. He doesn’t have a classically good voice. However, Bowie knows how to change his delivery to make it effective. I don’t think Bowie always uses his voice well though. And when he doesn’t, it’s clear his voice is not “good”. Or maybe when his voice wasn’t “good,” it just means he had done too much cocaine before that take. 🤷♀️
Pros: - It slaps! Great grooves on the intro song. - I put this on while doing some chores and it made the chores really really enjoyable. This is a great experience. - The repeatability of the choruses is very fun. - The grooves continue throughout. Very pleased with the grooves. Cons: Misc: - Lack of free time and general unfamiliarity with some albums on this list has stopped me from doing deep dives into the lyrics side. While I love writing about things like production and song structure, I really love getting into lyrics and concepts and I think Bowie is probably a really great lyricist that is hurting me a little to not have the time to dig through. Wah. - Looking at this album solved a mystery for me. One of my favorite bands, Okkervil River, has a song where they mention "TVC16" and I never knew what it meant. The lyricist has some great web-like lyrical themes and sometimes I will listen to one of their songs a few dozen times before actually looking at the lyrical connections because frankly it can be exhausting. In this song, called "Plus Ones", they mention some really specific themes from other bands songs that have numbers in them, and they add a "+1" to each. So they have lyrics like "100 luftballoons" instead of 99, "8 Chinese Brothers" instead of 7, like in the REM song, "51 ways to leave your lover" instead of 50 like Paul Simon wrote about. I feel silly looking at it now, but seeing a track titled TVC15 on this album made me finally turn my brain on and look at the Okkervil River lyric. Mystery Solved! It's pretty obvious now that I think of it.
Starts ICE, ends Thomas the Tank Engine
Golden Years is perfection would listen to this on repeat instead of the whole album
Nothing special but fine
I’m not a massive Bowie fan even when he’s at his best, so this just seemed “fine” to me.
Is literally every single Bowie album on this list? The writers of this book must be huge fans. Why do I have to listen to THIS album when I should also listen to the vastly superior and vastly more influential Bowie albums like Ziggy Stardust and Hunky Dory? It's fine. The songs are listenable. Nothing particularly memorable or exciting. The best song was probably "Stay".
It was ok but not particularly memorable
Gut!
Bowie in his good period
Pretty good.
Never cared much for Bowie, but this was pretty good.
Não consegui ouvir com muita atenção.
I'm not really a Bowie fan judging purely by his singles that I've heard on the radio to be honest but this was pretty good as a whole album.
This is alright - not the biggest Bowie fan but can appreciate this album. 6/10.
Am so conflicted by this. On the one hand, I quite like it. On the other, I don't very much. It's the second Bowie album recommended by this list this week, and like Young Americans, I get the feeling that Bowie was entering into a world made by other people. With his earliest work, he went and did things nobody had done before. With this, it feels like he's latched on to something else. Listen-to-able, but again feels kinda derivative.
Classic Bowie. I appreciate his work, although I've never been a huge fan. 3 stars.
Good. Not really my jam
I don't understand this list. Every other Bowie album from Space Oddity to Low is better than this. It's Bowie, so of course it's great, but really? Why this album? This is his worst album of the 1970s - it's down there with Pin-ups. Earl Slick's guitar heroics on Stay are the highlight of the album, but there are much better versions of Stay and Wild is the Wind on the BBC sessions box set. I saw him on the Station to Station tour at Earl's Court and it was not his best performance - it wasn't a good time for him. There are good, even great, tracks on this album, but as a whole it's hopeless.
I listened to this album about a week ago and honestly don't remember very much about it. There were only a few songs, and Golden Years doesn't really do much for me, but if I hated the record I'd hopefully remember that, so I'll give it the old standby of 3.
Golden year is maybe my favorite Bowie song. Really enjoyed Stay that I had never heard before.
one of bowie's better albums
Reminded me of love lies bleeding by Elton John. Not a bad album.
not really my favorite type of thing even if i really like david bowie. my favorite song from the album would probably be word on a wing. i think that i will listen to it more closely thanks to all the people loving it.
3/6=50%
Station To Station, and Golden Years, are enough to earn 3 stars. The other tracks were meh.
Welcome to the sixth David Bowie album to be recommended. I'm approximately 1/4 of the way through the list so, ¿only 15 more to go? I liked two of the longer tracks the most ("Station to Station", "Stay"). I would skip "TVC 15" on a relisten... but probably would relisten to the album. "Golden Years" was the only track I knew from the album, and it probably got a lower individual score because I've heard it enough times already. I'm coming to the conclusion that, yes, David Bowie is talented, but I'm not his audience. It's possible that I've heard enough already.
Once again, David Bowie meets expectations. His voice is really interesting, but the music itself just seems... odd. I like it, but don't REALLY like it. This album gets another 3 stars.
Nice listen, don't think it's his best album though. "Wild is the Wind" my favourite on the album.
Nice music
This was really pretty good, but not a huge standout or anything.
Carino
my least favorite offering from Bowie so far. Fine, but not my style and doesn't feel as interesting as other pieces. Maybe its just a taste thing, clearly it seems like it was a departure and exploring new ideas.
no killer songs but good arc
I didn't really feel conected to the album
Not my favourite Bowie album, but the title track is amazing I think. I liked the albums after this that carried on with that style
Solid Bowie album, can't complain, but I don't think it's one of his best. Not for me anyway.
not his best
Golden Years was good. Otherwise boring. But decent in the right mood. Just no hits or memorable parts.
Station to Station is the sound of an artist searching, exploring, reaching for the next thing. It takes guts, arrogance, or the unearned confidence brought on by significant chemical enhancement (ahem) to spend a producer's money when you go into the studio with nothing specific to say. One could speculate that Bowie knew this on some level--even the title Station to Station implies being between two destinations, with this album being about the journey. Bowie doesn't start from zero--he keeps some of the rhythmic techniques he picked up from soul music, but with the exception of Golden Years, his last word on the subject for a while, nothing here could reasonably be labeled blue eyed soul, though there is groove involved for sure. The title cut, a kind of mini-suite, flirts with prog and art rock, while glancing backwards at glam. Word on a Wing is a twisty ballad with Bowie's most impassioned/melodramatic by way of Anthony Newly vocals. He gives a similar treatment to Nina Simone's Wild is the Wind, with underwhelming results. Stay grooves beneath glam, with an overlay of rock guitar--it's an attempt at a fusion that doesn't quite gell, but it's interesting. The one cut that most clearly points to where Bowie was heading, and the high point of the album, is TVC15, which starts from a modest piano boogie and gets progressively more aggressive in its stylization from there. There's no doubt that Station to Station is an interesting album, and especially so for Bowie-philes, since its so obviously transitional and seat of the pants, but that doesn't mean its great. The price for making it up as you go along is you sacrifice the laser sharp focus of the Berlin trilogy or Hunky Dory. I'm actually inclined to give Station to Station a higher rating than it deserves, just out of gratitude for the masterpieces that came out of the process of making it, but screw that. I'm going to judge Station to Station in isolation, and that's that.
Cool
3 1/2
This is not the Bowie album I was looking for (as in: not bad, but Bowie did release some utterly brilliant albums - just not this one)
Not his best, but a pleasant listen.
Why would you have a ten minute song where the first two minutes are devoid of anything? Couldn't it have been reduced to 8 minutes?
It's certainly not bad, but it's not something I'd likely listen to on repeat over and over either.
Golden Years is classic, hadn't heard the others but some good jams.
Vibes and iconic voice.
Good album…never gotten into Bowie so it is good start…reading the wiki page is that he was high recording this and doesn’t remember it.
Never understood why Bowie is so rated. Having listened to it I give it a 4 for the music and a 2 for the vocals.
Unlistenable
Not a big fan of this album. Bowie sings without much direction over good music which ruins it for the most part. That said, the music on Stay was good enough to make the playlist
it's ... sort of rubbish? no, it's reasonably funky yknow and maybe i should pay attention to the lyrics... though he was off his face on drugs and being a fkn nazi so maybe not nina simone cover is SHITE and an INSULT
Not a huge fan of David Bowie; this album is fine.
David Bowie no me gusta
david bowie
Normal
Fails to fully hit the mark but some nice numbers nonetheless
Easy laid back listening, funky music styles
You can tell David's life was in shambles and his addictions were at an all time high through out the entire album. The album is a stepping stone for the British post-punk scene. The highlight is "Golden Years"
Liked his songs
Not Bowie's best album but his signage moments of greatness are evident as always.
This told me that I need to listen to more David Bowie. I enjoyed this a good bit but do think I could return to it and like it even more Liked: Word on a Wing, Wild Is the Wind
Saved Prior: None Saved Off Rip: None Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: A fine album, I can see why Bowie is such a big deal. Nothing was super catchy for me to latch on to after a couple listens, but a good album nonetheless.
Nu weet ik het wel hoor.
Good because it's decent era Bowie, not terribly interesting.
A bit short and one song was pretty bad.
Wild is the Wind. Bien, corto. No lo noté especial.
In my second tier of favorite Bowie albums. Starts off strong with Station to Station and Golden Years. A few flabby krautrocky moments in the middle, notably TVC15. Ends with some impressive vocal performances in the last couple of tracks. The lore around this album probably overhypes it.

Esta bien. Me ha gustado. Pero tampoco hay que fliparse.con Bowie
This is the first David Bowie album I've ever actually listened to. I've mainly just heard separate/single songs by Bowie and have loved him that way so it was interesting sitting through a whole album of his for once. After saying that, yeah I'm not a fan of this one. I'm sure I would like other David Bowie albums and listening to station to station, has inspired me to go through his whole discography to find that perfect album that I'll fall in love with. This album made me feel like I wasn't listening to Dr. Bowie, it might be blasphemy but it almost felt like an imposter album. That's all I'll say and please don't hurt my feelings.
“Station to Station” by David Bowie (1976) Bowie’s work on this album features some well executed soundcrafting for 1976, but is easily dated. Nice musical variations, but lyrics are (once again) unrelentingly self absorbed, with clunky phrases and even a grammatical howler in the chorus of “Word on a Wing” (Can you spot it?). When he transitions to classic rock and funk strains, the arranging and recording lack the dynamism of his contemporaries, but it’s pleasant enough to listen to. I think the problem with Bowie’s singing is an excessive self confidence in his modest gifts. He seems to be unaware of how silly some of his (uniquely Bowie) vocal stylings sound. Maybe cocaine does that. Can someone with experience enlighten me? “Golden Years” is a fine track, chiefly because he finds an interesting groove and sticks with it. “Word on a Wing” is an interesting and even engaging hymnic reflection, but it lacks the convincing authenticity of the contemporary Keith Green and 2nd Chapter of Acts, or later artists such as Jars of Clay or Caedmon’s Call (or even Bob Dylan in his Christian ‘phase’). Still, this song is a refreshing inclusion. The rock strains in “Stay” are excellent, exemplifying the album’s general avoidance of idiosyncratic distractions—a definite plus. Overall, a good recording—one of Bowie’s better efforts (in my admittedly limited experience). 3/5
a. Starting off with a song that is the title of the album is bold. Making that song ten minutes long is even bolder. I’ll confess, I am not a huge Bowie fan. But this album has Golden Years which is one of my favorites of his since it is on the Knight’s Tale soundtrack. It’s one of the highlights of that movie where the entire cast dances to the song before the tournament, breaking the fourth wall. I’m sure David was proud of that when he was watching the film. Of course, I am writing this while the first song is still playing. Halfway done but that’s halfway closer to those Golden Years. I think one of the reasons that Bowie never really resonated with me is because it’s difficult to hear him on most songs. The music itself is louder than his voice and that is shown on this track. Golden Years! What a treat. I still don’t understand many of the lyrics (hard to hear him) in the song but I still sing along (sometimes even dance along wearing a full suit of armor). I’m enjoying Word on a Wing. There is a magic with David Bowie where you can have his music playing, not really hear what he is saying, but how he is saying it along with the actual music makes for great background music. It’s also wild that there are only six tracks on this album, not even 40 minutes long when compared to current day musicians trying to have multiple hours on their album. I wish I could hear him as he talks about TVC15, is that a new type of VCR or radio from back then? He was very ahead of his time so I wouldn’t put it past him to make predictions in his songs. Stay is interesting because when the song started, that is exactly what I wanted to do but as it went on I kind of wanted to Go. Wild is the Wind sounds a little bit like the rest of the songs but I hate wind in most of its forms so I totally agree that it is wild and hard to control. Is he ruminating on that presumption or telling it to someone? Either way, this was an enjoyable album that, even remastered, feels like the 70’s.
Enjoyed it, funky
I could never really get into Bowie; I feel like you either get him and his music, or he's lost to you forever. I'm definitely in the latter category - I don't hate him or anything, but his music just does not speak to me. This album is some fine funky rock and roll with a sort of krautrock aesthetic to it, but that's about all it is to me - just "fine".
not my favorite still good
Bäst var Station to station, word on a wing och wild is the wind. Albumet får medelbetyg.
impressed i didn't actually recognise station to station - clearly not a greatest hits album entry :D
Not my style. Should relisten to it
Pretty nice
Not my favorite Bowie album
Funky. Golden Years is such a bop.
As much as I like David Bowie, this album started out a little weak. The last couple of songs were great tho, Stay is funky af, and Wild Is the Wind is classic Bowie.
Eh
1. Piano and guitar nice, eccentric instrumentation though. Bass tone is really nice. Vocals sound a bit out of place with the beat. The song gets better later on, guitar tone is nice and the piano is cool. 2. Guitars are nice, groovy beat with pretty cool chorus. Left ear guitar sounds really nice, psychedelic. 3. Piano is really nice, love the Rhodes synth in the left ear. Subdued role of the guitar is interesting, and the vocals sound pretty nice. Fading oohs during the break are a nice effect. Best instrumentation so far. Love the ending 1:30 part of the song. 4. Bass is pretty groovy all throughout, I like that its given room to shine in beginning by piano. Piano really works well in the song, and the guitar part is cool. Guitar groove during 'transition/transmission' is pretty cool. 5. Bass tone is nice, intro is pretty cool. Like the really crunchy guitar that joins later on. The chorus is really strong, and I like the strings that really add to the emotion Bowie expresses. The bongos are a nice touch. I do like how the bass shares the spotlight with the guitars. 6. The guitar is really nice on this, especially with the flanger. The bass is really nice too, and I do like how both guitars are about on even footing; neither gets more of the spotlight over the other. Not a fan of the delay on the vocals, but the sad tone of the song fits well with the flanger guitar. I do like how the song gets more intense about halfway in, you can really feel the strength of the emotion increase. I do like how a second acoustic guitar joins in in the last section of the song, I feel like it really does add to the overall sound of the track.
A classic album, not his best phase or best album.
Just too short. And golden years is too much of a hit to feel like part of the album.
Pretty good
Very good song writing but not apreciated the vocal and instrumental
Any Bowie a solid 3
I liked it, Bowie is always a great listen to me because I never follow him closely but every project I listen to feels like a journey with his creative process, the good, the bad, the experimental
Standout Tracks: Stay, Wild Is the Wind
Closer to a 2.7
Golden Years has a nice funk feel. It sounds a few years ahead of its day, like something you'd hear in the early eighties. Bowie is a great talent, but his theatrical style just isn't for me.
Not the best Bowie.
Well produced and entirely forgettable collection of six mediocre Bowie songs.
Alright album. Not a lot stuck with me though. Surprising, right? 4.8/10.
Bowie is a mystery to me. The theatrical art-rock world — Rocky Horror, Roxy Music, now this — I understand why it mattered, I can see the craft, I cannot connect to it. The voice doesn't work for me. The persona doesn't work for me. Station to Station is supposedly his least theatrical album, more groove-based and krautrock-influenced. I listened hoping that would change something. It didn't. 2/5 — respectfully baffled.
I wont lie, I didnt really like this album
joa, gut aber nichts besonderes imo. 2.25 sterne
A lot of fun, great beats and instrumentals, but not the impact that I expected for...
I will remember the last name but I will not remember the album. I just don’t get it. Aside from a few songs what’s the big deal with Bowie.
I've never really been that big of a fan of David Bowie - Golden Years was the only song I liked off this album and listening to it again after a while it's just kind of a weird song structurally.
Boring
David Bowie on vähän liian luovuudenhullu mulle. Ihana tyyppi mutta musiikki ei ihan nappaa.
Pretty disappointing. The title track and Stay were highlights (by comparison) but the rest of the album was pretty poor, and I despised TVC15. Not one I'm likely to return to.
Alright
Is David Bowie‘s entire catalog gonna be on this list? What is this the fourth or fifth album since I started. Don’t get me wrong Bowie’s an icon but not sure that means every album is needed.
Fine listen, but not as memorable
I didn’t like how long the songs were and they were pretty repetitive.
No doubt important, but I found it a bit thin and uninteresting… my short attention span didn’t feel massively gripped by the longer tracks which failed to justify themselves.
Golden Years is a classic and among Bowie’s best songs. However I couldn’t connect with the rest of this album. The dramatic flair in Bowie’s vocals didn’t match the grooves in a way that resonated with me. Top song: Golden Years
im so sooo bored. word on a wing was okay and also the last track but everything else was sort of unbearable. 6 song album and its almost 40 minutes bro i think i could enjoy his voice under the right circumstances. but idk about this one
This one didn't really do much for me, I'll have to come back to it another time.
Some good songs, but overall wasn't my thing.
okay maar niet geweldig
I loved the instrumentals a lot, but the voice and the ups and lows were the same. It bored me a little bit
Me aburrio. Sobrevalorado
Not Yoshikage Kira's best work 2.5/5
Didn’t really do it for me.
2,5 stars I largely enjoy the instrumentals but most of the time the vocals kind of bother me. I can't really pinpoint why. Maybe because he's mostly talk-singing and the corresponding... special wailing melodies, maybe it's the rhythm of his singing, maybe it's his vibrato, his tone of voice, everything together? Idk I just don't vibe with his style of singing.
3/10
I liked 2 of the songs on this album (golden years and tvc15), other than that I really did not like the overall album. admittedly there are only 6 tracks on the album. I went into this expecting to like most of this as I really liked the aforementioned songs. Overall, I would not listen to this album again, nor would I want to buy/own it. Giving it 2 stars as I liked 33% of the album
While this is the album featuring Golden Years, you are much less likely to find yourself humming along to any of the remaining songs Its ok, but not one of the more likable Bowie collections
Am I having a good time? I don't know. I don't think I like David Bowie. Okay I got to Stay and Fame. His funk music is a lot more appealing to me on this album. I know its a transition album so I might take a look at the next one to see if I like it more.
Meh
Lindo sonido
Meh
I just don't get it
lyrics>sound doesn't appeal much to me on first listen
Early Bowie. Not my cuppa
New music of his for me, mixed opinions.
Album plutôt ennuyeux. Très orienté funk. Seule "Word on a Wing" me parait convaincante.
2/5 Really mid. Nothing about this album stood out to me. Instrumentals carried it the whole way through and even they didn't really stand out. Very boring album.
Hey look, another Bowie album! This one kinda feels vanilla and uninspired.
pretty good musically but I am not a fan of David's vocals, like ever.
Merge
Very short album. Music too slow, drawn-out and repetitive (boring) for my taste.
I can admit that I slept on Bowie until right around the time of his death. The starting point for me was buying a greatest hits album. And I thoroughly enjoyed it; even the songs I wasn't familiar with. So I was expecting to like Station to Station. Wrong. Didn't care for this album much. "Golden Years" was nice. And there was a lot of eccentricity and some funky elements to a few of the tracks. But I just didn't get it. Sorry....
The irony is that Dimery's Swiftie-esque adoration for Bowie does neither of their legacies any good. Those of us who appreciate Bowie's brilliance can easily disregard his self-indulgent mid-late 70s explorations. Those who believe that everything with the man's name on it IS brilliant don't need conversion. The loss is with those who haven't come to appreciate the extraordinary art he produced from 70-73. For these music fans, the combination of Dimery's claim to authority combined with his inclusion on this list of all of these mediocre Bowie albums is a genuine source of confusion and distraction from the man's legacy; it sponsors the really unfortunate "I just don't like Bowie" prejudice one finds among the reviews on this site.
3/10
I can see why people love and adore Bowie, but it’s just not for me.
2,5
Kinda boring honestly. Opening song was ok but very long. Not on the same level as other Bowie albums. Might have been the cocaine.
it was meh. i get the vision but it's too outdated sounding for me. and bland.
Kinda mid ngl. First song had a massive intro. Never really felt compelled to like any certain parts. Not offensive at all though. Would give 2.5 stars if that was an option
fun but aged
Bit too cocaine-y for me, I didn't really enjoy any track.
Newt does not like the sound effects at the beginning.
Didn't realise the album had skipped...
Not my favorite. Stay was good, the rest was kind of forgettable. I was not a big fan of the way Bowie's voice sounded... I think I really only like his stuff that has more of a disco influence.
How many fucking albums does this man have?
Boring noise
Not good
6 songs 36 minutes Listening while cleaning my room Song one- didn’t like to start it picked up and has some fun moments it’s catchy but not completely in love which is a good summary of the entire album last song is wild in the wind pretty good not in love
i love bowie but this is not my taste
Idk I was working
Very strange that it is only a 6 track album but each songs runtime is 6 mins on average. The kind of album they would be blasting in a record store when you’re already overstimulated.
You can smell the peppers and milk oozing out of every simultaneously mid-high energy yet melancholy song Pretty underwhelmed overall
David Bowie is already experimental leaning and this album is even less pop than some of his others. Interesting and im glad I listened to it, but not my cup of tea.
it was alr I got bored tho
Found a lot of the vocal harmonies grating and hard to listen to. Not sure if that was intentional or just a product of the recording technology available at the time, but it wasn’t for me. Lots of cool stuff happening in the instrumental though!
Certifainly was no Ziggy stardust
I don’t get why everything love David Bowie. Nothing amazing or interesting about this and other albums
Maybe I don’t like David Bowie as much as I thought, or maybe I just like the hits. This is the second Bowie record I’ve gotten this week (I previously got The Next Day) and neither of them really connected with me at all. Best Track: Wild Is the Wind
Coked-out David Bowie invents a weird Nazi character and does a bunch of interviews in that persona, people spend the next few decades mythologizing him as a brilliant performance artist. Cool. Meanwhile, it has almost nothing to do with the music on the album beyond a vaguely desperate disaffected vibe. The vocal performances Bowie puts in on this album are similarly baffling, both in the lead and backing vocals. Melodic and tonal choices are weird all throughout (in a mostly bad way). The lyrics are a mix of dumb (TVC15) and inescapably pretentious (the rest of it). Stop repeating "scheme of things" The best track is the cover at the end of the album because he sings like he actually knows what he's doing. Parts of it remind me of Jesus Christ Superstar - not a value judgment, just an observation.
I like the music but I have discovered I do not particularly like the sound of Bowie’s voice. Purposely ignoring the whole persona thing because I think it would encourage me to rate the album lower. not adding to collection
Just didn’t really enjoy it
Sooooo much Bowie
good but not my thing
honestly not a huge fan
Very nice background instrumentals. Just not feeling the singing tbh.
Too long songs, overall it sounds boring. I can't believe that this can be some of Bowie's finer work.
Golden Years is a good song. Otherwise I'm just not a huge Bowie fan. He's also on this list way too many times.
Looks like it’s just me but other than Young American, I never need to listen to this again. David Bowie before about 1981 just doesn’t do it for me.
The vocals were pretty rough on this one. I love the construction of the album as a few longer songs, but since I didn't really like the songs much, it solidified this as a 2.5.
Started off a little weird but mellowed out, was enjoyable but not my favorite
This one isn’t essential Bowie unless you’re a die hard fan. And even then this would be 6 or 7 tops in the order you’d put them in. Golden years is a good song but not a heroes or a life on mars or a diamond dogs. Bowie was capable of greatness. But not here. 2 because it has taken the place of something far more worthy.
not every bowie album belongs on this list...
A bit underwhelming for what I expected from bowie
Not his best
Whatever
Echt inmens saai. Begin is veelste lang, eerste nummer is al 10 minuten.
people back then really had a different way of thinking about music. Idk sometimes lyrics are beautiful sometimes they just feel like words to fill in blanks. Songs were less catchy also. But that's maybe today's problem with dopamine-filled songs. Maybe they had another idea for what is catchiness also Lots of words to say that my dubstep filled brain doesn't like it 2/5
Love the sound of this album. Unfortunately there's no good songs on it
A good album but not his best.
I get that it’s an important album for Bowie, but it doesn’t do much for me. I love that Bowie experimented with music and seemed willing to try almost anything to explore new paths. In doing so, it’s inevitable that some stuff won’t be up to the standards set by his best work. I think that’s what we have here, and that the importance of this album is more of an indirect kind in that it led up to the Berlin trilogy. So, important as it may be, as an isolated album it’s a 2/5 for me.
Meh. I just haven't gotten into Bowie outside of some radio hits, and this absolutely did not change my mind
Meh
Listened to the first song, wasn't feeling it at all
I liked the instrumentals and the vocals grew on me. Liked it more than I expected to
Imagine you have a boss who is a Boomer and you’re in desperate need for them to like you and the only way is to listen to their self proclaimed “top notch record” they produced back in college. This is that record. Felt like I took a bite out of the plastic apple that was only on the table for decoration. Just didn’t feel right, no matter how much you want it to.
Did not enjoy Bowie’s voice, but did enjoy a some of the musical elements. Did not enjoy them enough and overall annoying. Also only 6 songs and somehow feels so long
Every time I hear Bowie I think the same thing: I’m not sure I like this. There’s nothing overtly offensive in this record, but it walks a thin line of being almost annoying. It’s pretty funky, but doesn’t really scratch the funk itch for me. The songs felt repetitive and stagnant—with no groove. In fact the longer it went on, the more I anticipated the end of each song. For such a heralded artist, I’m disappointed. 3/10
Jesus. Long
Not a huge David Bowie fan...
Not the biggest fan of this album. Just felt like it was a cool album from a unique noise perspective, but it really didn't have a lot of god feeling songs. Favorite track on the album was Golden Years, which was good, and had that cool clicking noise and echoing effects, and was the one song I felt was catchy on the album.
Meh. I understand this album was significant in Bowie's artistic journey... but there are already SO MANY Bowie albums on this list. This one doesn't stand out for me.
bowie isn't really for me
I’ve never really warmed to any of David Bowie’s music. This is no different. It’s a pleasingly short duration. Sadly, this is balanced by fewer, longer songs.
