Reviews (page 13 of 13)

I cant. im sorry but i cant. 12 minutes ... yes i know you're THE frank zappa ... but i need to stop letting men convince me to listen to songs over 7 mins ... this is getting ridiculous

I’ve tried listening to Zappa in the past. He certainly has the chops and a tight band behind him but I guess I just don’t get it. Some parts of songs are cool like much of SOn of Mr Green Genes, but devolve into silliness or random noise. Not for me

Abstract af

It's ok, the guitar is very well played, but there's really nothing to it. All the songs blend together and there's nothing distinctive. It's good background music I guess?

2nd Listen. Not my favorite Zappa record. It seems good though. It is starting to grow on me.

Frank Zappa has never appealed to me musically and that's mainly because his image is so off-putting. He looks like a total fucking creep. Only knew the song Valley Girl and that he gave his kids fucked up names. This shed new light on Zappa for me, but it's still not my bag. *shrug*

Not my favorite Zappa - there's something about jazz without lyrics that I have trouble getting into. Technically proficient, sure, but I like his later stuff much better.

Well, I've never heard an album like this. Hot Rats is essentially a jazz album, but the bass is electric and the horns share the spotlight with searing electric guitars. Zappa demonstrates his remarkable guitar abilities all over the album's six long tracks, breaking into long solos over spastic drum lines. The instrumentation really is remarkable and full of variety. My experience listening to this album felt like watching a really long talent show-- I could appreciate, even stand in awe of, the incredible display of musicality before me, but I couldn't imagine coming back again. There's only so many minutes of blues-rock-jazz improv I can listen to before I start to check my watch. Maybe the fault is with me. I couldn't help but want to compare this album with Wish You Were Here, the last one we listened to for this club. While from totally different genres, I noticed some superficial similarities. Both feature long, sprawling tracks with extensive instrumental sections. However, while every song on WYWH seemed to grow, develop, and build, Hot Rats sounds like a jam session the length of a college lecture. It's like listening to a Tech N9ne song-- yeah, it's impressive, but when am I ever going to be in the mood for this?

Had fun but not something I'm going to put on and listen to anytime soon. Good jams, thought I'd enjoy the vocal track more than I did. "Zappa dedicated the album to his newborn son, Dweezil." Alright, man Saved: Peaches En Regalia*, Son Of Mr. Green Genes

First listen. Love other Zappa albums. Not getting this one though.

Was so dissonant, it inspired me to pick up my guitar just to drown it out

I quite often like Frank Zappa but this passed me by a bit if I'm honest.

As a younger pup, I was many times guilty of pretending to like Zappa more than I actually do. But it's time to come clean. I don't care for this very much at all.

Not bad

2/5 experimental sounds, a bit noisy though

I’ve never really understood the appeal of frank zappa. Most of what I’ve heard in the past seemed to be frustrated, talented, informally trained orchestration and that’s most of what I heard on this album. “But he’s a great guitarist!” I remember college friends saying, and they are right about that - I really liked ‘Willie the Pimp’, but there just isn’t enough guitar to save this album for me. 2.5 stars and rounding down.

It was OK at best. Nothing really stand out

Didn't enjoy that much but didn't expect to

Very 70’s. Not really my thing

6 songs of weirdness. Willie the Pimp is kinda fun. Other than that there's lots of instrumentals with some pretty cool guitar. Not great but not the worst either.

Never will I enjoy jazz rock saxophone.

Well, my favorite track on here was both the shortest and the one that had zero guitar in it. “Little umbrella” is great! I liked the last track, too. The rest felt kind of exhausting. I was expecting everything to be exponentially weirder. Instead, it sounded like a jam band parked in my ears and (mercifully) forgot to bring the vocalist.

I don't. Alles, was der Künstler damit sagen will, ist "Schaut mal was ich kann". Okay, we get it FRANK. Gut gemacht. Ansonsten nix packendes. Musste viele Passagen überspringen wie Spider Man. Will not listen again - but no total bullshit

Not my cup of tea.

Not great

Creative, but hard to listen to.

Brutal nosies.

Willie the Pimp is pretty iconic and great, but rest is just some noise for me!

Pété ben raide le Frank

Too much noodling for me, but some of it was like a groovy sixties dancing scene.

Enjoyed and intend to return to more Zappa. Lots of variety on the album (reviewed 4 days late whoops!)

The musical equivalent of someone talking for 45 minutes without actually saying anything.

Eh, really wasn't feeling this album today.

lovely noises Frank This genuinely gave me a headache

No thanks, not in my Q zone

goofy ahh album

not terrible. very out there and experimental, but still kind of listenable.

Rats, but not hot.

não gostei

Background music at a fancy restaurant. Not a fan

nur instrumenatl. mir persönlich bissi zu stressig alles aber jetz nit schlecht. trz 1/5 weil i würds mir safe nit nochmal anhören

I think I know two Frank Zappa songs: “Dancing Fool” and “Watermelon In Easter Hay”. This album isn't even remotely in the same league. One star...

Disgusting album cover. Music itself is also not catchy at all

A test of will

Pretty groovy if I do say so myself. Basslines and guitar solos are eating. Fav song is ‘The Gumbo Variations’.

Little bit of this, little bit of that ahh music. Just felt like a random jumble of music, like just default music mashed together thoughtlessly. I was prepared to give this album 2 stars as I thought it’s a bit whatever but it’s not like bad until I heard the saxophone solos on ‘The Gumbo variations’ which was then followed by about 8 mins of quite an ear-splitting violin or guitar? The thing is I know there is going to be some gimp on here saying that “oh this album is a masterpiece”, nah it’s not, just shut uppp and pack it in you slug eating, pretentious, pompous freak. I like a good bit of jazz, but this did not sound good to me, I just don’t get why this album is on the list, some of it was alright and he’s doing his thing or whatever but just isn’t for me, anyway it’s a 1 star from me.

i hated this

The music is really nice, but mostly intstrumental and the tracks are really long. Best song: Willie The Pimp

Bastard racket

Screeching guitar instrumentals with the occasional piano smash

Pretentious Jazz noodling...

Not for me.

Soulless technical accomplishment. This is a collection of random noises, and the class clever clogs sequences these to make something vaguely listenable. This is exactly why I don’t like jazz fusion.

Fastest 1 star I have ever 1 starred something

It's difficult for me to hand out too many 1-star reviews. Most times if I don't like something, I admit that it's likely just not for me and give it 2 stars. But I struggle to find any merit in this album. Why anyone would listen to this, then feel the need to ever go back to it is beyond me.

Jazz is my least favourite genre and unfortunately this album didn’t do much to change my mind.

Could not care less about this guy in 2026.

I’m no expert, but I found that the songs seemed kind of all over the place… maybe it’s just not my style.

To me, this music is forgettable. Nothing stands out to me. What I know of Frank Zappa is how he was outspoken about subjects that meant a lot to him. That, and the Valley Girl song that was “sung” by his daughter, Moon Unit. I’ll never revisit this album. I was actually surprised this album was not more avant- guard given who produced it.

sounds like a good jam band going for 43 minutes.

Self indulgent shite. I didn't even make it through the full album. 11 minutes long songs, most of which are torturous to listen to. Would leave a venue if this was on live.

This is probably one that it is important and revolutionary, but I didn't enjoy listening to it. I can admire and respect the guitar playing, but this wasn't for me

This mostly instrumental record is a mix of overly-fussy and overcooked compositions on one hand and ordinary rock jams with extended soloing on the other, neither of which makes for compelling listening. Zappa's guitar noodling never goes anywhere in particular *and* takes forever to get there, making *Hot Rats* a real test of patience.

Gefällt mir gar nicht

Not my style

Horrible, mid mid mid

Not that good

Instrumental mainly not my vibe 1/5

Found this very hard to listen to. Hate music that is built around solos. Just play a song, dammit

Didn't enjoy this at all tbh

I was hoping for something interesting. This is useless and repetitive. Sometimes this album sounds like a middle school orchestra playing tv show themes. Sometimes it comes across as a soulless humorless parody of funk music. Thanks for wasting my time, Frank. After this I re-listened to a previous assignment ('Freak Out!' from 1966) and I definitely like it more.

I have always been turned off by the eccentricity of Frank Zappa and this does nothing to change that opinion.

Lots of different sounds but none that I wanted to listen to.

Sounds a bit...random?

I'm not ready for an album with weird sounds and noises.

Perezon

Wouw.. more weird than actually good

Needless fiddly wankery. Peaches en Regalia (6/10) Willie the Pimp (6/10) Son of Mr. Green Genes (5/10) Little Umbrellas (5/10) The Gumbo Variations (3/10) It Must be a Camel (3/10) 4.7/10

Not my jug of juice.

This album made me feel physically ill. The guy can clearly play instruments well but why is he using is talents for evil?

Shit sandwich

8 minutes of enjoyment and 33 minutes of a jazz fart.

me estresa que sea casi todo instrumental perooo, las partecitas que escuche no estaban mal. not my cup of tea.

Niin että instrumentaalilevykö tämä olikin? Oli kyl parempi mitä se mothers of inventor vai mikä olikaan. Kuunneltavaa kai kuitenkin.

Really not my style.

Not my thing, but I can imagine it working in the background at the right party in my youth. He is definitely talented. I made it all the way through, listening in the car on the way to work. It is a strong 1 star in that I somewhat enjoyed it but can't make it to 2 because I wouldn't give it a second listen or recommend it.

This is the kind of music I would pay to avoid.

70s porn soundtrack?

Another album of noise from zappa

Not sure I understand

The horn players and drummer should be out of a job

All instrumental.

not my thing

Soloist wank instrumentals, noisey and avant garde for the sake of pretentiousness. No from me

Son of Mr. Green Genes was going to be my favorite song, but then it just kept going, and going, and going, and going. If the song ended in the first 3.5ish minutes, I would have really liked it. And that's kind of how I feel about this whole album. It has some really good ideas but exhausts them without elaborating in new or interesting ways. The longer this album goes on the more I don't like it. It started at a solid, this is fine, and I can see why it's highly regarded, and now I need the album to be over. Favorite Song(s): none

Terrible album, lacks musicality

Hopefully the next one is better

Zappa not for me

this is just not it for me

This exercise is challenging assumptions I've had about myself for a very long time... I thought I enjoyed all types of music... I guess I was wrong... Or maybe I just really hate meandering instrumentals, jazz, blues, bluesy jazz, jazz-infused blues, folk anything, and *gulp* rumba - which, based on the first 60 albums reviewed, makes up about a fifth of this list. Hopefully, this has been just an unfortunate randomization of the algorithm and not a foreboding of what the next 3.6 years will be like.

Man, I don't get it. Less obnoxious than the worst music I’ve heard from frank zappa, but still just really gross and unpleasant at best and boring at worst. I just don’t think he’s very funny?

Clown music made by an absolute clown. It was too easy to be 'freaky' in the 60's, no wonder boomers are scared of everything now. White guys who think going 'doot doot doot' over a splashy drum part is jazz love this. Peaches en pretense legitimately made me say 'fuck off' out loud twice. Anyone who describes an album as 'a movie for your ears' would be utterly and rightly ridiculed these days. Man would have to be in the top 5 of people I'd least like to have at a dinner party. As is frequently the case with reviewers, looks like again only Christgau got it right.

Listening to this made me very sad in a way music has not in a very long time. A uniquely joyless experience.

It's like they took all the unused notes from the rest of 1969s albums and put them in this. Honestly, if you're out there jamming with your friends and having a blast, awesome. But we don't need to hear you all jerking off together.

Zappa can make some music, but this isn't my thing.

I'm not going to question Frank Zappa's talent, because I believe he is very talented. With that said, let me be brutally honest here: "Hot Rats" is a mess and doesn't represent even 1% of Zappa as an artist. It was 6 unpleasant tracks to listen to, I almost thought I wouldn't finish it. I don't intend to listen to it again, whether by my own will or someone's recommendation. I don't think Frank Zappa is a bad artist, he's just maybe not the kind of artist I want to listen to at the moment.

headache

It feels so forced to sound that goofy it is unbearable. A lot of technique, not that much reason.

Awful 60s psychodelic nonsense

1. The most energetic elevator music I have ever heard 2. Absolutely anxiety-inducing. Couldn't listen to all 9+ minutes 3. This sounds like music for a chase scene shoehorned into a 70s porn. Would have been fine listening to it for a minute until the next scene, not any longer 4. Too many musicians playing different songs at the same time. Not enjoyable 5. If yaks went to blues bars, this would be their favorite saxophone riff. I, as a not yak, am unfortunately not the target audience for this song 6. I like Scandinavian Jazz, French Cafe Jazz, Hard Bop, Cool Jazz, and Jazz Trio (guitar-led AND piano-led). I do not like Anxiety Jazz, which is a genre I hadn't heard until now. Hard pass on this album, and I fail to understand why it's on this list. Perhaps for inventing Anxiety Jazz..?

Boring

reaaally not a fan.

never heard this album Willie the pimp track 2 is great rest is a bit jazzy for me so far and getting on my nerves

NGL. This is just too out there. At the end of the day, I just like nice pop songs. When I was in high school, System of a Down was big and I couldn’t ever get into them because they, as I used to say, “keep going out of their way to be weird.” Well, maybe this is where they learned that from.

I didn't like this album at all. I had no enjoyment while listening.

Fairly self indulgent rock/jazz. Doesn't really say anything just a stream of musical notes, whose order isn't particularly important.

Uh? Don’t know Zappa’s music. First time listening. Great guitar player but the music is bad

Blues Rock apparently means loosing the part which makes Rock fun and the part which makes Blues heartfelt.

What is this trash?

Very strong 1.

Not a fan

This sounded like overstructured, overdone arrangements, over and over again! Not….my…cup…of…tea! Better than Bjork though.

It's like the forefather of dubstep.

Not my thing.

Every now and then he managed to put out something that I found listenable and a good listen. "Willie The Pimp" is one of those. But for every one of those songs, there are at least 10 garbage tracks like "Peaches En Regalia". I'm very content to be one of those people who just doesn't get Frank.

Trash emo music 2/10

Good God, this was even worse than the Moss Side story album. Just terrible.

STANDOUTS: n/a; not the kind of album I'm here for. OVERALL: 1/5

Step 1 get drunk Step 2 go into a music store Step 3 record Step 4 randomly start playing every instrument there into a cluster of an 8 min song Step 5???? Step 6 this album and frank zappas music in general This is hot garbage, just an absolute mishmash of random noise

Bunch of noise

Not my cup of tea...

just dumb, playing the organ didn't help

Was not a fan

Not for me.

No me gusta me aburre

i can understand why it might be technically musically genius, but it was hard for me to listen to

1. peachez - 1 2. the pimp - 1.5 3. green genez - 1 4. umbrellaz - 0 5. gumbo - 1 6. camel - 0

Had to turn it off two songs in because I got tired of hearing guitar noises lol!

Basically bland elevator music

Seems like this is what happens when you do a ton of drugs and suddenly think you know how jazz works.

Not my thing, ever.

I'm not into music that tries to blend every genre on the planet into every track. First track is dreadful. Willie The Pimp - a shade above dreadful. ...and the album goes on and on in a random choppy messy way Couldn't give more than 1 star

This isn’t my thing. I associate Frank Zappa with the Dr. Demento show. (DJ who featured odd music). I’m not even sure if Dr. Demento ever played Frank Zappa on his show, because I never listened to but it is the sort of music that I imagine was on. He probably also played The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

Did not like at all.

Most of this music confuses me, but somehow interesting.

I’ve tried to go through his works before and didn’t get hooked

I thought this was alright at the beginning but then it went full jazz

I give up. This is dogshit. Nearly all of these records are guitar bands from America. A tiny cross section of what's available. Ok, they might throw in the odd Zappa to show how wacky and irreverent the list is but it's just the same beef, different gravy.

Too weird.

Poor jazz psychedelic rock

Rubbish

No thank you.

I know Zappa is considered a genius but the it’s just not my style of music to listen to in any setting.

Menee yli hilseen, vai pitäisikö sanoa ali?

Unlistenable

Wasn’t digging the all over the place jazz

I forced myself to do it but it's such a cacophany. Zappa was a genius, but it's rare when I have a taste for it.

it's                   shit

Kind of infuriating. Won’t be returning to Frank in a hurry.

My brother’s favorite. But at my age I can openly admit that really am not into Zappa. Or my brother, for that matter…

Goat testicles

I've tried, but no.

1/5 Ugh..... Uuuuuuuuuugh. Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! 🤕

Not my style

Not this album

I'm not an instrumentals guy, so it wasn't up to my speed.

Songs with no direction. Pissing in the wind.

This is 40 plus minutes a jam session that gets a very obscure at points. I do not understand the allure to this album. The album is 6 songs long so that means most of the songs are way too long. No need to listen to the album.

Hot shite

I keep thinking I should get more into Zappa. Or at least give him more of a listen. But everything I hear seems to be music for music’s sake. And this album does little to change that perception for me. Everything seems overthought and overplayed and lacking much spontaneity. I feel this album tries to be too clever but fails. Even the wonderful Don Van Vliet vocals on Willie The Pimp (nine and a half minutes long? Really?!) can’t change my mind that this is indulgent and flabby throughout.

Not a fan. Too many extended jazz type solos. Not my cup of tea. looked forward to it ending 1/5

I do like some Frank Zappa....but definitely not this album

First two tracks were unbearable, so I turned it off.

Nonsense.

I really don't like this

Not my thing. Too jazzy.

Amateur-sounding garbage

Ugh. Fucking terrible.

1* absoluter schmutz, mal lieber weniger Haschgift flotzen.

Talented musicians. Just not a style of music I'd see myself listening to much.

not my thing

Wow, this is dissonant. I hate jam bands.

I hate Zappa
