Great jazz album! I find myself humming Peaches en Regalia occassionally.
Cooles Album!
Nicht schlimm aber definitiv zu besonders
Dynamic, interesting. I had no idea what would come next and was eager to find out. Nothing stood out to make it into regular listening for me.
I really liked it!
A bit too strange for me
I liked this album a lot too, but I said would be a little harsher with my grading. I loved a lot of the instrumentals because they almost reminded me of the bastard child of Pink Floyd and Dave Brubank, which was super interesting. The general atmospheric vibe to the album was also really neat and the different flowinesses of the different instruments was well done. Like a lot of jazz, you do really have to be in the right mood for it. There's a lot of repetition (or near-repetition that only the performers and someone paying really close attention can hear) and 45 minutes of the lowfi feel can get a little annoying. Overall pretty good though
Kinda decent for some of it
3/5
an interesting fusion of rock and jazz
Always loved Peaches En Regalia but not familiar with the rest of the album
Bit intense and experimental, but not bad
Mostly enjoyable, except the end of The Gumbo Variations. I liked Peaches en Regalia the most.
This album is odd. I've never quite listened to something like this before. I mean, I've listened to jazz music and jazz fusion, but this is completely different. It felt that every musical choice made on this record was intentionally trying to be as far away from mainstream sound as possible. A lot of the percussive elements to these tracks are extremely odd and sometimes off-putting. A lot of the sound is very experimental for sure. "Peaches En Regalia" feels like the soundtrack for an epic battle at a circus. It is definitely my favorite track. The guitar solo in "Willie The Pimp" drags out way too long in my opinion. Doesn't really add anything new to the track the second or third minute in. I take it back. Last bit of the solo is pretty sick with the beat switch to the swingy rhythm and the polyrhythmic section as well. But man, the vocals are just so... odd. It definitely made me laugh out loud though so I feel that's a positive. The percussive elements on "Son of Mr. Green Genes" could very well be sound effects in Mario Kart. They add a colorful element to the track, but they are definitely odd additions. The clarinet/sax/whatever that was really hurt my ears at the nearly halfway point hahaha. Gotta say - whoever is playing the drums in this band deserves some major credit. The instrumental solos on "The Gumbo Variations" were pretty hilarious, but not funny enough for me to enjoy it for 16 minutes. Overall, this album of music - sometimes I wonder if it qualified as that - was at occasion entertaining, at other times a little too harsh for my ears. Maybe if I listened to it more I would appreciate it, but as of right now this record is a 6/10 on my positivity scale.
Really interesting on the whole, let down a bit when it goes full on self indulgent jam session.
weird and good
More enjoyable than I expected. Lots of jazzy vibes, and Zappa only sings on a single track (I think). Probably not one I would reach for given the proliferation of other jazz albums, but worthy of 3 stars.
Some fun sounds, I wish there were more lyrics.
Pentaton, Fuzz face, groovy guitarlir. Så åbenbart også kontrabas, piano og vilde orgler
Nuts but that’s Zappa right?
Jazz fusion not really my thing but this album has its moments for sure. Especially during The Gimbo Variations. The playing is insanely hot throughout, not only Zapoa's playing but his band cooks 3.5 🌟
A joyous dose of jazz-rock fusion. Half the album is lengthy, indulgent jams and it’s superb - Willie the pimp the pick of the bunch
Enjoyed this quite a bit - free flowing guitar and a great sound in parts. Willie the Pimp was a brilliant track but has a few moments where it slips into porn soundtrack territory
There's a lot going on here. Perhaps too much at times. Can't say I completely enjoyed this, but it's certainly been an experience.
Ranges from sheer brilliance to the annoying, probably too much. I'm being rather harsh on this album with my rating, but then again my stars never aligned with Zappa.
Hot Rats first thing that struck me was the number of tracks and the fact so few had lyrics so that gave me a strong hint this was going to be different. I know the name but never heard much of his stuff peaches en regalia - very jazzy opener willie the pimp - second song is quite a turn, love it and a great "solo" with drums and screaming over the top. One of the very few songs on the album with lyrics but still mostly instrumental This album shows me how much I value or focus on lyrics in albums but shows they are not needed to make a great album but I don't know enough to comment on most of it except I really like it. the gumbo variations, this is jazz hectic jazz with solid rock undertones - nearly 13 mins it is a wild ride with some serious "distortion" of the instruments towards the end very experimental from what I have heard before wanted to give this as 4 - enjoyed it, will listen again as it has intruiged me but considering its experimentalness and it not being my usual music I am going with 3 - decent, could stick on again. but at 6 tracks (albeit long tracks) it won't be hard to jump back in and out
Original, muy vanguardista
One of the many great albums that frank zappa created. Great instrumental music
This was more melodic than I was expecting. More instrumental. Has some funk to it. Lots of sax. I like it. Good background/working music.
Instrumentalt album
I liked it, but I also don’t think I’ll be coming back soon
Funky instrumentals
Not really my thing but I can appreciate it for what it is. I have Zappa fans in the family so I'm familiar with other albums. Have not heard this one before.
Jamming gefällt mir. Kann mir vorstellen, dass es in der damaligen Zeit, mit gutem Kraut, die richtige Musik war.
I did not want to listen to this and especially did not want to like it. I saw that it was 43 minutes long and only 6 songs and thought it was going to be a masturbatory fest of ugly masculine energy... and I guess it kind of is. But I kind of liked it anyway. Whoever is playing the guitar for minutes and minutes and minutes does a pretty good job, and there are some really intricate lines that are doubled on some really obscure instruments. When the singing comes in, which is fortunately few and far between, the ugly snarky ironic masculine energy comes into focus and I lose interest. Oh yeah, and the drumming is freaking fantastic. Jazz-Rock Fusion huh.
Not bad, a little intrusive at parts but enjoyable in others
Not as trippy as I was expecting. Felt more like a jam rock album.
Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 12/20 Innovation: 16/20 Bangers: 5/20 Emotional response: 11/20 = 57 Yeh that was interesting. High 3.
Its definitely good, but also its not super noteworthy. I kept it on for a while but would forget that I am actually listening to something as I went about my day bc it just blended into the background. I am sure this is also influential enough and unique enough to warrant a spot on the 1001 list
A lot of instrumental and I enjoyed it.
What is it? Is it Jazz, Blues, Rock? To be honest I'm just glad its not industrial french shite. There is a hint of showing off here but i'll let that pass. Nice music to work by. would have liked some lyrics but its a step back in the right direction! 3/5
Load up the bong and take a big ol' rip, because that'll help you get through this jam band slog. This is a competent, reasonable listen, harkening back to the days of free love, copious amounts of cocaine on the set. I'm just not really sure that holds up today.
I am kinda confuse, there are a lot of skilled guitar plays but it feels kind of "not in my current mood"
Never really listened to Zappa. Not sure how much I will in the future, but this was more interesting than I thought it would be.
Interesting. Kind of jazzy, sometimes a little too twangy. Mostly instrumental.
- So much SOUND! Little place for musical rest...can be overstimulating - Prog/ jazz/ blues/ rock - Excellent instrumentation and skill
Quite varied and enjoyable to listen to
As a fan of the musical virtuoso, I really enjoyed the skill of the drumming, bass and guitar playing. Great jams from a legend. It was great to finally explore Zappa. 5/5 from the technical perspective, 3/5 as a listener, so 4/5 is where I will leave it.
You can almost smell the patchouli coming out of the speakers... Now I understand why my dad likes Zappa so much... Another thing is that I can't look at Zappa without thinking about Borat... So I imagine Zappa at the end of each song saying "Great success", "my wiiiiife, she's nice"
Really liked this album at the start! Fun weird jazzy prog from an earlier time. Started to lose me at the end as it blended together...an evergreen valid criticism of most jazz and/or prog.
Fine guitary noodling, but tails off to boredom
First and last songs where great rest of the album was very hard to listen to.
Neutral opinion
Glad I took the time to go through a full zappa album - I should listen to more
I feel like I need to be in a smoky basement at a house party. Being buzzed AF and listening to this would be great. First track is quite fun, definitely some interesting things going on here. I am not very knowledgable of Zappa so I'm glad to listen to him deliberately. There is definitely a "jazz" feeling to things here, especially with the long solos and back and forth. Jamming for sure. I could see this construed as showing-off/mastubatory guitar-playing but from what I know of Zappa ego is not a huge thing in the playing. I could be wrong. I don't know. 7 minutes into Willie The Pimp and I'm ready to move on. Finally Little Umbrellas is different. Overall, it's not bad but doesn't do a whole lot for me right now.
Peaches En Regalia is an amazing track. The rest of the album is also great, from technical point of view. However it's exactly my style.
Technically brilliant, but the lack of lyrics kind of made it a slow listen. Not fully my style
I don't listen to prog rock often, but it's interesting to listen and think about how many bands were influenced by Zappa. Decent album.
Very weird. Not terrible tho.
I see where this is excellent and innovative, but I don't think it is the kind of thing I would just turn on
Gotta be in the right mood for Zappa but this album is really cool.
Interesting instrumental album..not the biggest fan of the instrumental but I have to appreciate the effort and the art in it
Some good tracks, but not my kind of music
Ihan vekkulia menoa noin yleisesti vaikka välillä lähti turhankin hyvin laukalle.
Way jazzier than I expected, this is a great album of jamming!
Hauska proge ja sopivan lyhyt sellaseks. Työn teon taustalle toimivaa
Pretty cool but a little bit boring. Just a bunch of cool jazz solos.
Good instrumental album. Not anything outstanding. Just music
Not much on Spotify but that Little Umbrella bass lick is awesome
I’ve heard some Zappa that I like but this was not that
Liked the first song for the most part. I think each song has a lot of cool sounds and groovy parts but it always gets interrupted by some annoying grating sound part way through, might be worse on headphones, but I don’t want to bother trying to listen to this again on speakers. Overall the album gets really fatiguing over time, there’s not much downtime between songs so it feels like noise. I wanted to give it a 3 but after writing my thoughts it feels more like a 2 lol
It took risks. But I didn’t find it enjoyable to listen to
lukewarm rats 😐
not a big zappa girl tbh
Notable Textzeile: Hot meat, hot rats, hot cats Hot ritz, hot roots, hot zits (Hot wrists) Hot suits, hot cysts Die Textzeile ist vor allem notable weil das ja fast ein ganzes Album Instrumentals sind. Und dieses Lied auch 7 von 9 Minuten. Konsequent inkonsequent so to say.
Elaborate Elevator Music
Oh boy. Here we go... Odd. Organised noise. I'm too sober for this weirdness.
Probably good, just not my thing
One of the reasons why I jumped into this project headfirst is the exposure to unknown or untried artists. Frank Zappa, who I never listened to before, is one of them. I get the feeling there's a general consensus in mainstream pop culture that he was a cool guy. Anyway, I didn't like this record.
Not my taste of music . I respect frank zappas music . Zappa was a controversial figure. Zappa had diverse musical influences that led him to create music that was sometimes difficult to categorize. Favourite track: peaches en regalia and litte umbrellas
I have to be in the right mood for Zappa and today I was not.
Tiresome jam band stuff, the never ending guitar solo
Not my style,un poco densa,me estresó que no empezara a cantar.
No es mi onda 💜 es como medio experimental¿? Nose not for me
I can see why this is on the list. Not sure it is for me.
I finally get why so many people say Frank Zappa is overrated. This album did nothing for me. While listening I felt mostly indifferent with a slightly silly atmosphere hanging over everything, but that’s about it. There’s no real emotion, no depth, nothing that actually sticks with you. The instrumentals feel like a bunch of notes synced together trying hard to sound like music, but they never quite reach anywhere meaningful. It’s all speed and technical showing off with no melody or soul. Sure, it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard, but it’s also far from impressive. The whole record just feels like Zappa showing how clever he is rather than making something actually enjoyable or memorable. This album only confirmed what I suspected — he’s way too overhyped as an artist. Once was enough.
this did not interest me
Too much sax
Idk man first few are good but holy k-stall I don’t need to be hearing it for 10 minutes per song. Like Little Umbrellas that’s more of a reasonable length and vibey with a good baseline. But cool funky weird which I like.
Ah, so much jammy.
Nope. DNF.
I do not remember much about this album, I'm sure it was average at best because of that.
2.3
I really liked this, but this man is not a good person for the little I learned about him, so 1 less star for it
Not for me..
Its cool just not really for me.
6/10 - I liked this album when it was at it's weirdest - songs like little umbrellas and it must be a camel bring it down for me Fav Tracks: Willie The Pimp, Peaches En Regalia, Son Of Mr. Green Genes Heard before? ---–- ✅ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ❌ Will Listen Again? -- ✅ Album Cover ------- 10/10 weird
I think I've heard some Zappa songs prior to listening to this, but in no way could I say what they were (I don't even think I've heard "Valley Girl"). I listened to Hot Rats in the morning and it felt like good wake-up music. I mostly enjoyed this and would be interested in listening to more Frank Zappa. I know it's a slight to say my favorite thing about the album is the cool cover...
Little Umbrellas
Some of the tracks are really good however far too long.
Really disappointing. I though this was supposed to be batshit crazy but it was just a bloke playing very long guitar solos. Discouragingly ordinary.
The type of album that on paper, sounds really cool. However in execution as a new Zappa listener it's a bit of a slog. Most tracks are near 10 minutes and are pretty jam band-y. Some incredible musicianship obviously, but I feel like you need to be in a certain mood for this kind of album. Either that, or on like a billion drugs.
Ehhhh, never been the biggest Zappa fan. This listen kinda solidified that
Sorry dad. I don’t like a jam band
Amazing album art. What. Will this be. Was not expecting this! Fun little jazzy instrumental vibe. Will likely forget its existence soon.
No lyrics just guitar. I mean there were pretty solid guitar solos, but I don’t know if I could listen to a whole album of it short and sweeten to the point if you love guitar you’re gonna love this album. I was wanting more.
todo instrumental, me divirtió un poco más q los anteriores dada mi situación emocional
This is about as close as music can come to being genreless, as in you can’t name its genre category. It’s inventive, disorienting, and at times enjoyable, but often annoying and tiring too, at least for me.
Sounds like the background music for a Stasky and Hutch montage. When it locks into a grove it can be good, the baselines stand out for me but the songs are too long and after a few mins of a prog jazz jam I am over them. I sort of want to be able to say I like Zapa but it has a little to much jazz sax and guitar noodling to really hold my attention so doesn’t give much enjoyment. 2.3
Willie the Pimp is good but too long. The rest is just not my bag at all. I appreciate that the recording style was maybe quite groundbreaking at the time and these guys are obviously great players. But I'm a a bit baffled as to why this was as popular with the mainstream. It's quite an acquired taste.
내가 선호하는 장르가 아님. 음악성은 높게 느껴지지만, 집중을 하기 힘들었고 다시 찾아오지 않을 것 같음.
LSD does odd things to the human mind.
Well it was interesting, but not really my style
4/10
Сара 2 Марко 2.5
Pretty weird. Interesting listen, enriching listen, but I hesitate to call it enjoyable.
Figured I wouldn't like this and I was right. Some of the guitar-y bits were OK, albeit excessively noodly, and then a truly horrifying amount of saxophone kicked in.
I’ve actually heard this album before! I have no memory of it. It’s saved in my library, that’s how I know it’s gotten a listen. So maybe this time I’ll remember… Oh no. Frank Zappa reminds me of your neurodivergent 12 year old cousin showing off his multi- instrumentality. It’s like “oh wow Frank, that’s amazing…. You can stop now…. Please stop. Please. Please stop. Yeah you need to stop now.” I want to give him a 3 for effort, but since I wanted to kill him by the end, he gets a 2.
I feel like I need to listen to this live in a big field with 500 people smoking pot around me. It’s one long jam session in different movements. It Must Be a Camel is the only song that sounds composed; the rest just sound like they’re being offbeat just because he’s wacky!
This album should’ve stayed in the 60s
Bit boring all songs sounded a bit the same, probably I don’t have a good taste
63 yaşında olsam begenirdim belki. jazz-rock karışımı güzelmiş ama.
Meh. Some good stuff here like Willie the Pimp; kinda of a psychedelic jam ride mixing genres with lots of different instruments. Endless guitar solos.
Throwback to jazz band, essentially just improv. Favourite track: Umbrellas
Headache fuel
Yeah, I think this is not really my vibe. I do admit that this is not similar to anything that I have listened to before. I'm not a big fan of the vocals. very experimental sound. The fact that it was created in the '70s is crazy; I would think it was from the '90s. My favorite parts were the guitar riffs. Tbh, the only parts that were making it nice. I don't really think that I'm going to listen to it again. Also, this was my first experience with Zappa. The last 3 songs are the most annoying songs that I've heard. I think to get through that you would have to be completely high on drugs. They are sooooo overstimulating. At some point it feels like you are listening to an 8-year-old experimenting with music.
Not for me, kinda sounds like clown music.
Not for me.
Instrumentals are cool. Really decent background music.
I lik the guitar but that’s about it.
Lordy
What do you do with a jam band that can’t write a cohesive song? Just noodle around on your guitars for an unfocused hour or so, I guess.
Filed under I certainly respect and I recognize the talent and craft involved but don’t have the patience for it. Peaches in Regalia is excellent. Willie the Pimp is great until you’re four and a half minutes in and He’s Still Going at that solo for another four. The Gumbo Variations desperately needed to End. Not the audience on this one.
Whatever.
241/1089 This is fine, not really my cup of tea though. it’ll (deservingly) have its fans though Peaches En Regalia was the stand out 45/100
weird
my uneducated ass isn't sophisticated enough to understand music from era when making non-profitable music was still a thing like the unapologetically jazzy stuff, but some of the instrumental parts aren't my jam, I don't dig sporadic stuff
Jam bandish, too much kazoo
Hot rats? More like hot garbage.
Didn't like the Zappa stuff I've listened to before. The mix of overly proggy music with stupid lyrics wasn't meshing for me. I prefer early Ween where the songs and the lyrics are stupid. I think this is a pretty quality, colourful release, but aside from Peaches en Regalia the tracks failed to really hold my interest
meh
this one was not for me (one of my least favourite so far)
Lots of extended jam with a few cool riffs here and there, but if you’re not tripping on drugs, lots of it will be lost on you
2.5/5, rounded up to 3 by the grace of an integer based rating system. It's a decent enough album, but hardly worth a revisit. Zappa has always felt to me as overly self-indulgent with little consideration for his listeners. So many songs go on for too long, and some instruments/phrasings are used for novelty's sake. There are some good riffs and pieces here though — really good ones, and I would always think "wait, don't go" when one arrived since it would usually disappear not too long after introduction. I'm thinking of the brilliant fiddle in particular that graced a couple of the songs for far too little. It's always a little painful to think of what could've been if a jamming artist just swallowed their pride and exploited this excellent riff or rhythm instead of letting it get buried in a mess of other sounds. Hot Rats. Could've been a 4/5.
“A movie for your ears” was probably a good description for this, but I didn’t necessarily enjoy the movie. For example, the screeching instruments in The Gumbo Variations is something I’d liken to a creaky door… good thing there was only one song after it, cause after about 12min of that I was ready to be done.
I'm not a Frank Zappa fan but this is not terrible. I could actually listen to most of it only fast forwarding through one part late in the album. Probably not something that I would listen to on my own or really under any circumstance but I don't regret listening to it this one time.
Not that great and not my favorite zappa
Sumt allt í lagi en annað sem dró þetta niður
Hot rats? Meira svona hot mess. Nei, ég segi svona.
Not my speed, super forgettable, with some songs actually being painfully annoying
Frank Zappa was a genius over many musical genres, but this isn't my favorite of those genres. With the exception of "Willie the Pimp", these are all extended rock/jazz/fusion instrumentals that display a staggering amount of instrumental prowess (as all Zappa's work did) but aren't actually all that enjoyable to listen to. There are moments of beauty and coolness, but also extended stretches of ear-punishing dissonance. Not something I'll seek out to listen again.
I listened from start to finish, and I enjoyed some parts... but Zappa's out there.
Drugs
Not terrible, just not for me. Too meandering (I wouldn't say long, just boring and unfocused). Didn't like the jazz stuff so much. Felt like a collection of similar-sounding jams. Some if it was enjoyable to be fair, Peaches and Regalia, but that didn't make up for the rest.
A little groovy I guess.
Exciting style. Great musicianship. Quirky creative Zappa but all instrumental bar one track??? Nah no thanks.
wish it had words but i liked the instrumentals
Started jazzy but so much of the same thing first time dnf
Niet zo'n Zappa fan
If I had my way, I'd put it right at 2.5. This sounded like one long jam session. A lot of sounds just did not land on my ears well - a lot came off to me as "noise". Some parts were fine to have playing in the background, but this was not really my thing. I think I'll settle on 2 just cause I couldn't wait to be over with this album at the end.
Wished he sang more ngl :3
I would like to rate it higher. I like the idea of Frank Zappa. And this album is very appealing in select places for a few moments. And then it gets weird. It’s mostly weird.
it’s like i’m dating every guy i’ve ever dated.
Tøffe gutters inngang til jazz? Dersom det er dette Terje Berg har vokst opp med skjønner jeg jo negativiteten....
full instrumental album didnt listen to whole thing, its ok but not really my thing
low key groovy I like this very funky mostly no words and I low key fw that .I really like listening to the gumbo variations , reminds me of something that would play in a feel-good movie scene and I mean although there is a lot going on it all kind of works together. There are some parts that sound like forks on a whiteboard and its only on the song that Is 12 minutes long. 3/6 songs added
Quite silly and funk but I want some of the the singing. If there was i would votr higher and add tk playlist ig
very instrumental very elevator not for me
I just couldn’t get into it. It’s probably more fun to play than listen to.
a 2
Actually enjoyable Frank Zappa! All the smirking, pointless showboating I usually associate with Zappa is dialled down a lot, though not fully. Pretty groovy rhythm section and a about half the tunes are enjoyable. Would've been better with almost all the guitar removed.
exactly what i needed to work with. i will never listen again
Unfortunately not my style
Previously unknown. I did not dislike this as much as I thought I would.
Kind of boring to me. Pleasant to listen to, nothing groundbreaking
Meh.
I didn't really connect with this album. I can respect it, but not anything I would reach for again.
A bit too jazzy for me though some good bits. The first track was the best
Ponderous
Zatiaľ príliš veľa rôznych , zvláštnych zvukov. Neviem sa s tým stotožniť, asi nie môj štýl. The gumbo variations práve zabili moje uši. Ak to má byť hudobný film tak iba ak som sfetovaná v púšti a je to horor. Kritik zo mňa nebude 😔 Pardon nepáčilo sa mi to, príliš goofy na mňa
It’s fun and energetic. I just don’t see myself returning to this album.
4/10 good album , good sounds but I don’t see myself going back to his album. Added 0 songs from this album to my library
Good, just wants my cup of tea!
Zappa is not for everybody
Not half bad if not for all the squeaky jazz sax that sounds like a distressed antelope.
Zappa’s long meandering jams were never my thing really. Respect to to musicianship though. This grew on me toward the end when I paid less attention and had it on in the background doing chores. I don’t thank Zappa respects his audience.
It’s fine, but I’m personally not int jam bands
"Omg look at me, I'm like soo random!"
Not really my thing, but it was okay
I dont think I'm cool enough for Frank Zappa's music
good music but it's ultimately not for me
mmm not my favorite at the moment but i can imagine liking it at a different time
2.5 stars Really, this isn’t for me. I enjoyed some bits of it- I don’t mind the whole jazzy prog thing. But it’s a little much and not enjoyable as a whole. Just not really for me.
At least it doesn't have much Frank Zappa talking or singing. I'm not a very technical music appreciator so maybe there's a deeper layer to enjoy but this comes off as just a band in a really narrow groove pocket for 40 minutes. I guess with Zappa there's really just no pleasing me because at least this doesn't have kazoos or the default Zappa note flurries. But then this album doesn't do anything strange or forward-looking at all and then just kind of sounds like a bunch of other stuff happening at the time and it wears out its welcome especially in 'The Gumbo Variations'. Once we get to 'It Must Be A Camel' it has at least some interesting parts but that's all the way at the end. I'm not a Zappa hater, I think Apostrophe needs to be heard by everyone. Inca Roads with Ruth Underwood is fantastic. Muffin Man at the Palladium Halloween '77 needs to be heard by everyone and I will forever advocate for that.
Maybe if I was on the right psychedelics… but that’s a strong “maybe”.
This is an extremely 1969 sounding album. I didn't mind that this was mainly instrumental. I'm glad Captain Beefheart's role on this album was brief lol. I liked the first half of the album, but the second half got kind of weird and atonal.
Instrumental albums are not my thing. However, this was "decent". Also, rock is not necessarily my style, so this probably is much better than I'm making it seem. It's a 2.5 star for me.
Zappa. Man, what an album. Was it Jazz? Rock? Blues? Country? I have heard many of his later works and I definitely liked this one better, but I think it was the Brown Acid left over from Woodstock (it’s bad, man). The funny part is I kept hearing so many modern bands in here, especially Radiohead KidA, and Dave Matthew’s Band Under The Table. Was Zappa the king of jam bands or just so stoned he forgot to end the song? Key tracks for me was Gumbo Variations because the song kept moving across instrumental voices, and Willie the Pimp, which now makes sense why Zappa is on so many Best Guitarists lists. The hard part is I enjoyed the songs but I found myself wanting them to end at some point, and some just didn’t seem like that was going to happen. I get why this is on the list, but I am going to stick with Dweezil rather than Frank for a Zappa fix. Maybe it’s a GenX thing…
I like the shorter songs. Cool bass lines and fun lyrics.
Finally some Zappa. Most of it is perfectly fine jazzy prog rock but it loses a star because of Willie the Pimp which is incredibly stupid and long. I don't get the obsession with this guy sorry!
The gumbo variations were on the wrong side of squeaky for me on the sax and strings. This brought it all right down for me.
Instrumental album of just guitar solos not for me
A bit weird, but better than I was expecting it to be.
appreciate the weirdness but i'm definitely not on the right drugs for this one
It's an experimental jazz/jam album. Not for me, personally. That said, I have tremendous respect for Frank Zappa. He's been a huge influence on musicians for decades.
Forget Beatles vs. Stones, I'm a strong believer that you're either a Beefheart or a Zappa fan, and I'm a Beefheart fan. This isn't awful, it's just got a novelty quotient that is way above my desired level.
Frank Zaps you with a rock-jazz jam sesh on this album. It has some pretty guitar work supported by the sax. Recordings such as this make me wonder how much was really put into it thought wise. Did Zappa and his band take a bunch of drugs and just play around in the studio? How would you even recreate this with such long songs that don't really go anywhere? Overall, I can get down with Hot Rats but it's also not a must replay. I do like the creepy cover with a Beetlejuice lady climbing out of a basin. 1.95 hot ratstar(s).
Dont like instrumental albums
Jazz unexpectedly intricate
The only Zappa record I'm familiar with is Joes Garage (which I really love) so I'm expect to listen to this but also nervous and have absolutely no idea what to expect. Pretty crazy first track (Peaches...). I worry I will get tired of this quickly though if it's an indication of the rest of the album. Burst out laughing 3 seconds into song 2. Should have seen that coming based off the song title. I'm so fucking nervous. This groove is pretty sick, percussion layers, unhinged vocal performance (Captain Beefheart) with a meandering solo over top.. chaos. Knowing what Zappa was all about, I'm sure this solo is in like Phrygian sus7 over Pentatonic9 minor or some shit but to me it sounds entirely random. It could also just be him fucking around. No clue. This is going to be a tough listen even though I want to like it because Zappa is just interesting to me. Actually halfway through Willie The Pimp things kinda settled down and the solo makes more sense to me, with the tack piano/harpsichord just doing straight quarters. I'm quite sure every person on this recording was stone cold sober, but this sounds like a 3am drunk jam. Distorted violin making an appearance near the end is cool I guess. Unnecessary but cool. These recordings/productions sound ahead of their time imho. Like very mid 70's, so like 6 years ahead. (after reading the wiki this was one of the first albums made with a 16 track machine, most albums at this time were still 4 or 8 track, so that's definitely part of it.) I feel like I'm just going to be pointing out crazy things that I like/don't like for this review. Like wild arp synth on Son of Mr Green Genes. GREAT guitar solo tone around halfway. Cheeky ending. Side Note - apparently Shuggie Otis played bass on the first track and was only 15 years old at the time. His album Freedom Flight is cool. and came out 2 years later so I guess he was 17(?) which is wild Into a more classic jazz vibe with Little Umbrellas. Feels like a spy movie/film noir but I'm into it. A nice break from the insanity. Rippin piano/Hammond parts are cool. Some cool crunchy sax/wind parts. Gumbo Variations - I'm kinda into this (it's 12 mins so maybe that will change lol). Sick part part/chords. You can hear someone cueing/counting in the background at times. Wild sax soloing. I can't make heads or tails of what's going on musically, but I did stay engaged on this one! The mid-way guitar solo in Camel starts off sounding like I would play if I was pretending to play jazz. Then there's some crazy pitch bending going on that almost sounds like a digital guitar/pedal? These guitar tones are fake sounding and I'm so curious what they did to achieve that. The album felt like it kinda just.. ended. Not sure what the point of any of this is, but I actually mostly enjoyed what will certainly be my one and only listen. Giving it a solid 2.5.
Peaches En Regalia was all I’ve really spent time with. I remember loving it like 10 years ago. I tried Hot Rats at that time but Peaches was all that sticks. The melodies are so memorable and it’s still a fun listen, but I’m acruay drawn to the B side so much more now. Specifically Little Umbrellas and and It Must Be a Camel. Those were big standouts. A 15 y/o Shuggie Otis played bass on this record? Crazy. Pretty cool but I most likely will not return.
I have listened to this before when I first discovered Zappa, but it’s been a solid ten years Peaches En Regalia still hits Vocals are absolutely nuts on Willie the Pimp. Quite a character A lot of blues-derived stuff on this one. Sooooo much pentatonic Some shredding no doubt Love the swampiness of Gumbo A fun listen, doesn’t stand with some of Zappa’s other work for me from a compositional standpoint. Comes off mostly as a blues rock jam band on this one, which is fun to watch in a bar but not something I’m throwing on regularly.
This was decent background music but that's about it.
Glad it's over
Try to concentrate or work while having this play in the background challenge: impossible.
Late 60s psych rock. Just don’t like this genre.
Just kinda noise
Very progressive guitar solo heavy psych rock jazz fusion. Didn't really feel it.
я видимо глухая к джазу это пипец для меня
Var nice men helt ok
It's kind of jazz. It's kind of rock. It's kind of fusion. It's kind of good.
Overall score: 2/5 I get that this album is a classic, but I find that it just kind of drifts into the background. Some great jamming and musician ship throughout the album, but it gets to the point where it feels like I've listened to a never-ending guitar solo or horn section. It would be a great album to see live, but it's not something I'd return to.
not very memorable
I was excited for this one but it was honestly just really boring. Maybe I missed something? The instrumentals were too all over the place to really get into. I didn't have any highlights. Sorry Frank
4/10 - it's alright, reminds me of typical 60/70s hippy guitar band, heard his name but first time listening to him, always thought he was a caricature of the era
3 songs in and I think I get it. It’s busy, maybe too busy for me. Verging on “maximalist pop jazz.” Not my thing.
Very noodly, no doubt brilliant guitarist but somewhat overkill. Prefer the captain.
I can’t do this.
Noo
I enjoyed parts but a bit of a slog
Never been a big fan of Zappa based mostly on ignorance. I don’t think I liked this album but I’m not quite sure. I was surprised that it was mostly instrumentals and parts of it did catch my attention. This is an album I would have to listen to a few more times, but I probably won’t.
Medium
43 minutes is a long time to listen to a bunch guys masturbate. I got through the whole thing, but I found no joy.
I never really got on the Mothers of Invention/Frank Zappa train. It’s fine, this record, although I think there’s too many long passages of soloing
funky... but dull
Wow, a lot of instrumental. Found it a little boring and monotonous.
Is it Jazz? Is it rock? What is going on. It seems to be both.
very discordant, I am sure musically interesting but not pleasant
Very mid 4/10 Willie the Pimp
M-4/10 S-6/10
# Album Name: Hot Rats # Artist: Frank Zappa # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Honestly, not for me. Guitar work is good. The rest is boring. # Top Tunes: No idea # Would I listen to it again? No
Uh not my favorite, but not bad. It was cool how it started with an instrumental track, but once it got to the singing in the 2nd song.... ehhhhh what was that tone of voiceeee. AND WHY 9 MINUTES :O
This just merged into one constant guitar solo for me. Nothing I’d listen to again.
I've never listened to Zappa because I never really knew where to start. There's so much to pick from. There's a lot to like about this album....I don't mind extended jams and I don't mind instrumentals. But I just want to hear him play guitar, the bass and drums and not the other sounds and shit he's experimenting with here...like, the back half of Gumbo Variations is great. The part with the saxophone? Terrible. Willie The Pimp is a great track, but I'm not sure if I'd return to this album or not...and if I have to wonder that, the answer is that I probably wouldn't and the last track dropped it from a 3 to a 2 for me. Too bad because there are some really good moments on here.
Don't hate it, but don't particularly like it either. Progressive rock & jazz have never really been my thing. Best Track: Willie The Pimp
Nee, niet mijn muziek. Wel toffe gitaar rifjes maar verder weinig ritme en uberhaupt zang. Vooral een onsamenhangen geheel van instrumenten
Zappa's always been a very niche musical choice. He was very talented. but just a weirdo.
Not my thing
Tough, man, tough
As only knowing "Bobby Brown" by Frank Zappa I wasn't sure what to expect, but it sure wasn't this. This was some weird jazz-type elements with Arabic-sounding tunes here and there. It just wasn't for me but it wasn't necessarily bad. I just still don't get Zappa. Strong 2.
It was strange listening to ‘Peaches en regalia’ without Elis James or John Robins welcoming me to their radio 5 show or post great reset podcast. I enjoyed the next few tracks or at least that's what i though until i looked down at my phone to discover i was still only on track 2. The Jazz approach to rock left me a bit confused in that i didn’t hate it in the same way as the captain beefheart album i was forced to listen to but dont think i could say i actually liked this.
Bit of a mess, not for me noise
One of the most educated personalities in music. Big cult folliwing, and lots of publicity for his daughter Farwell Zappa. Very talented writer if music, and still fun to listen to now. Most people probably not agree
#105 / 1001. Starts up with jazz, then goes to some Zappaesque craziness, then the rest sounds like an jam session where the players play out of sheet notes. Didn't really move me too much.
Przyjemny, ale chyba nie mój vibe, znowu nie ogarnęłam kiedy się zapętlił
I think I need to be on drugs for this
Radek is a hot rat!!! Creepy album cover… lots of monkey sounds, jazzy piano and trumpets maybe. The gumbo variations sounds like they just tried to make as much noise as possible. I had this thought before I knew the title of the track. This would not do well when overstimulated. Almost triggering. When will the noise stop?
I respect Frank Zappa & there are probably other songs I would like other than Valley Girl. This album was not it.
Extended guitar solos might be my least favorite thing.
è tipo il caparezza americano
Not for me!
I thought it was a fun listen although it wasn’t really up my alley. It’s got spunk
Too long and indulgent. Had to skip through a lot.
First track is great but then I heard Willie the Pump and at the start it is interesting but as it goes it becomes a little too long for my taste and I didn't like guitar solo they're just not my type. And following with Son Of Mr. Green Genes I understood what type of the album it is. Sadly it is a boring type of album where guy plays a lot of boring guitar solos. I liked short tracks they're good jazzy and captivating but long 8 to 12 minutes tracks are so long if they were shorter I think it would've worked much much better than what I hear. I like long tracks overall but Zappa sadly wasn't the type I like. Favorite tracks: Peaches en Regalia Little Umbrellas It Must Be A Camel I also liked the beginning of The Gumbo Variations before guitar solo. Overall I think it is 2,5 maybe 3/5
experimental/free form - not really my style
Not my style. Some songs weren't so bad but some I really disliked.
Ahh, Mr. Zappa. I really wanted to like this Hot Rats album, but it sounded like a lot of noise tonight. I can hear how it is musically complex. I appreciate it, but today I don’t luv it.
Background music
When I heard the album was called hot wraps I was expecting some 1970s Charli XCX dad rock singing what was provided was completely different. The album itself is pretty much completely instrumental except one song called Willie the pimp and I think the collective music feels like your listen to a movie / play
Lovely guitar, not much else
I can mostly get on board with this. It treads a thin line between being a cacophonous racket and a stunning display of Zappa’s virtuoso as a guitarist. l vibed - and I also *really* unvibed. I’ll meet you somewhere in the middle with a high two Zap. ⭐️⭐️
how tf people listen to this shit
Hmm ikke helt for mig
2-3 interesting but now exactly my vibe
starting to really dislike this list
Very funky, this album will get ya bopping, very good background music. Basically just a medley of every instrument soloing for 6 songs, banger. However, not something I would come back to listen to specifically, but instead put on to chill out.
Didn't really like the vocals in the second song Did not like the 12 minute song Liked Peaches en Regalia Very groovy vibes, lots of tangy guitar
I should have liked this more I think?
Mostly instrumental.
Zappa, man! I feel like I’m not the target demographic for this tbh
Very haphazard and long form songs. Sound very of the time but not my style
Monotonic
Det här var inte så spännade
I didn't mind this album too much, but I know it won't stick with me. I'm not he biggest fan of instrumentals, which this album *almost* entirely is, but I see the appeal. The best song was the opener, so it was a downhill ride for me. I asked Beau if he's ever listening to Zappa, and his response was, "I don't mind him. Kinda weird though." Which got me excited for something interesting and this doesn't deliver. Favorite song: Peaches En Regalia
Meh
I didn't really enjoy this. the first few songs were nice and polished, but at some point it stops being music and starts being noise. it wasn't bad but I wouldn't seek it out
Ну че ебать Фрэнк Заппа он зе морнинг из deep purple круто ниче не сказать
Not my pale of bobbing apples. Gave it a go but failed to capture me.
Nein von mir
Not for me.
Feels like something someone looking like frank Zappa would make. Sounded like someone who thinks they’re in flow state composing in a tv show but then it cuts to reality and they’re doing shit. I like Willie the pimp though Specific rating - 1.9 Fav song - willie the pimp Least fav - it must be a camel
not too fun
Elevator jazz
Great musician.....horrible songs. I'm sure I just don't "get it"
I appreciate the music, but it's not my jam. 2/5
I really wish I could like this more. Just find it uninteresting, I don't know.
