Reviews (page 6 of 12)

Really enjoyed it. Lyrics are compelling and the music moves me.

As generic and workmanlike as the name suggests

Solid, a timeless sound

A més, és clar, 'The Weight', 'I Shall Be Released', 'Tears of Rage'...

Good album

Folk. 1968. I Shall Bet Released is great one!

really great album, my favorite songs are Tears of Rage and Lonesome Suzie. such beautiful instrumentals and lyrics, with a really fun album cover, this is such a cool album. I’m glad I heard this. i’ll give it an 8/10 for how much I enjoyed it, i’m not a huge country fan. The Weight had a nice chorus with the piano and all but i didn’t really like those verses, i mean they were okay, just not really my style. overall, the album is groovy as fuck and i’ll definitely listen to their other albums, and i’ll watch the documentary that Scorsese directed

Classic!

Excellent album. The weight is a classic and makes the album automatically a 3/5. The cohesiveness of the album makes it great. Not really any songs worth skipping it’s an easy listen and flows nicely. 7.8/10 Re-Populated Album.

JUNE 4TH & 5TH, 2021 1.TEARS OF RAGE- Great bluesy, slow 60's ballad. 2.TO KINGDOM COME- A bit more upbeat than the last track. The R-&-B influence of the music is beginning to shine through. 3.IN A STATION- Yet another great track emblematic of the era, the same kind of vibe as "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum and "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James and the Shondells. Cool, unique instrumental accompanient. 4.CALEDONIA MISSION- This album keeps on getting better and better! Great piano work on this mid-tempo track. 5.THE WEIGHT- One of my favorite tracks on this album. Nothin' but bittersweet, yet good vibes from this folksy, soulful, vaguely-countryish track. 6.WE CAN TALK- Gotta love that organ. 'Nuff said. 7.LONG BLACK VEIL- Slower, bluesy, not too bad. 8.CHEST FEVER- KILLER OPENING! Sounds a tad "heavier" than the other songs (with those drums and psychedelic-ish organ and all). Perhaps my other favorite song on this album. 9.LONESOME SUZIE- Slow, melancholy type of song. I definitely don't dislike it though. ⭐10.THIS WHEEL'S ON FIRE- Definitely the most "far-out" song on the album. Pretty darn cool with a different vibe, and the third of my three equally favorite album tracks. 11.I SHALL BE RELEASED- Strong closing track to a very good album. 》》The VERDICT: Great album that should be listened to by anyone interested in C.C.R, Bob Seger, Neil Young and of course, Bob Dylan, along with late-Sixties music (and the era as a whole). Would definitely add it to the vinyl collection and listen to it again (and might enjoy it more the second time). ◇ RATING: 4.25/5

Great album! Need to hear it a second time to fully apreciate it.

- sad this is the first time I've heard it - wikipedia calls it the father of americana. I can believe it. - real variety

Excellent album. The weight is a classic and makes the album automatically a 3/5. The cohesiveness of the album makes it great. Not really any songs worth skipping it’s an easy listen and flows nicely. 7.8/10

A great album I was unfamiliar with.

P good

Terrible SEO guys c'mon. Won't lie though, I love this kind of music

The band were already clearly very accomplished musicians before releasing their debut album, but here they really established themselves as a a proper a proper band/songwriters in their own right. At time is fells like their just having fun, jamming and playing about with different instruments and vocal styles, but also some incredible songs on here such as the weight. A great album.

Pretty good. A couple gems, a lot of solid music. Why do they sound southern, they’re not doing country music, is it like rocked up bluegrass? They relegate Levon Helm’s voice to the background too often. Lots of fun keyboard and guitar sounds. Not perfect though. Is the Band a Greatest hits band?

I was surprised I didn't like this more. I guess I'm comparing it to The Last Waltz. At least I now know The Weight is the name of the song about Fanny. I can now stop going through life thinking it was about Annie or Brandy. I also now know that the Nazareth reference in The Weight is to the US town where Martin guitars are made. I'm rounding up to 4 since the brothers are Canadians and Martin guitars are the shit.

More soulful than expected

Really liked it! Very jammy, fun, and I liked how many people it seemed were involved. Many songs sounded like people just walked in, grabbed an instrument, and joined the fun

classic the band. good listen, somewhat long

I mean this album has, "The Weight," on it, so you know its a classic already. Levon and the boys in The Band always have those comforting harmonies and country flavor that a man of southern Illinois heritage is bound to love. I could also hear a lot modern artist that I like now in their music. I was hearing a lot of Grateful Dead in this record too, so I feel like even their contemporaries were inspired by The Band. My other standout was the ballad "Long Black Veil," a fantastically somber lovers lament. "I Shall Be Released," also struck a chord with me.

A lot of really familiar psychedelic, hippy cuts here Highlights: In a Station, The Weight Lowlights: Tears of Rage

A lot of the songs sound like they could be made today. Timeless.

Good freakin' 60's music

Solid album. Very chill much wow

Pretty fucking cool

The rest of the songs are almost as good as the song The Weight

Incredible. Not to the level as the Last Waltz but still incredible

such a classic album, has one of my all time fav songs

Better than expected, very chilled

Very solid americana album. Not a lot to add here.

@@@@. Very mellow, Clapton's '70s inspiration.

Several great songs / great song writing. Their next album was better

The weight

Better than Dylan

They don't make oldies like they used to

Loved this shit. Hit right where I wanted with a great folk-rock album. Favorite songs Tears of Rage and The Weight is a classic. I will definitely be re-listening to the album. Nothing that complex, just an enjoyable listening experience. 7/8. FROM HERE ON OUT ALBUMS WILL BE RATED HARSHER ON THE 5 POINT SCALE BASED ON HOW THEY RATE AS AN ALBUM SOMEONE NEEDS TO LISTEN TO BEFORE THEY DIE.

Too fuckin good. Blues and rock in a fiery combination of awesome musicians.

The band kicks ass, underrated for sure

4/5 - soulful, rambling rock with a good drum and bass line.

Starting to like the combination of rock and country more and more. This is something I would play on a lazy Sunday.

The Weight has such weight in the rock world. This is a good album

Good folk

1968. Key Songs: The Weight, I Shall Be Released, Chest Fever

Folk Rock

Wouldn’t make my 1001 albums Some classics though

Pretty solid will be listening to again

Better than the other The Band album I listed to you but still too boring for me

Nice version of This Wheel's on Fire. Also like Lonesome Suzie.

Ainda ponderei o 4

Groovy, if a bit boring. No moments from any of these songs felt like a big arrival or moment of catharsis—a characteristic that defines most of my favorite albums—but nothing was unsavory or offensive to listen to. That was part of my problem, though: the smooth consistency. I think it’d be unfair to call this album a drag, since I think many of these songs are beautifully composed and sang, but I’m not sure I can go any higher than a decent three. STAND-OUT TRACK: “Chest Fever” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Tears of Rage”, “The Weight”

Has a couple goodies on there. Nothing too crazy otherwise

Folk is not my cup of tea but i do understand why people love the album

Despite The Band being a group I would’ve heard a lot as a child, on account of my father, I had no idea this was the name of the album… Anyway. This is your straight down the middle country rock. Absolutely fine, no issues listening to it, and “The Weight” is a wonderful song. I don’t love it, but it was absolutely fine. It’s really a 2.5* album, but I enjoyed it more than some of the 2* I’ve handed out.

I like this one

I have a vicious reaction any time I see a combination of Folk, Rock and Country in the tags, but this was a surprisingly palatable listen. A bit bland, but at this point when listening to Folk Rock, bland is better than annoying.

I’ve never liked The Band. They just aren’t my thing. But I can hear that they’re a good band.

I always feel like I should like The Band more, but usually I don't : / maybe it is the singers

I've never gotten the hype over this album. Don't get me wrong it's not bad it just lacks something. The songs kind of blen together and, honestly, quickly become indistinguishable from each other and because of that lacks a sense of cohesion and sound like they're playing songs written for them, not by them. I like their self titled album more

This is #day682 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's my first of five albums by The Band, which also happens to be their debut. I don't really mind the music for the most part. However, if you asked me to say a few words about this particular record, I probably wouldn't have that many. Let it be a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day683.

I definitely found there to be a surprising amount of substance to this, from what else I've heard from The Band it all seems to be pretty generic, but I found there to still be quite a lot hear to like. The country rock sort of style was pretty cool, nothing hugely special but just enough for me to come away from this feeling like it was actually worth my time listening to.

Chest fever's pretty rad. Otherwise just ok.

Finally some good music!! The 800s have been a pain to get through so far so this was a gem needless to say

Good song writing boring performance, best versions of all these songs are covers

Enjoyed

I am sure this album has some deep meaning that I didn't get in on the first listen. I like the vocals and the chill vibes 3/5

The Weight is a classic, and overall I enjoyed this more than the other The Band album in this project. 3.5/5

Some jams here. Kinda all over the place, though

Finding music that you've heard as a chibis in these album listenings is an incredible feeling. It's nice to know that THAT song is "The Weight". I think I will have to go with my gut and not really give it higher then 3.5 - very few instances where I'd listen to this again. But it is quite good

It has some great tracks especially The Weight obviously (The Wheels on fire is also really good) and I can here how this goes onto influence others later down the road. But those highlights are let down by the rest of the album being mostly forgettable, well played and performed, but forgettable to me.

Yeah it’s alright, don’t love it but nothing wrong with it, i prefer their self titled though. Standouts are The Weight, We Can Talk and Chest Fever.

good background music

This album is like three songs and the rest mean nothing to me, boring for the most part but has decent stuff

A destacar: Track 1 - Tears of Rage Track 5 - The Weight Track 9 - Lonesome Suzie Track 10 - This Wheel's On Fire Track 11 - I Shall Be Released

Okish 3/5

Fun instrumentation, i love organs so much...in general just good rock music!

Storytelling set to a mix of country, blues, and rock that works. It reminds me of "Nixon" by Lambchop and the later indie influences like Faye Webster. I can see why Bob Dylan and George Harrison liked collaborating with "the Band" because this album gets lyrical more than it does melody-wise at the start. A reflection I had from this album is that one/a few good song(s) can affect how I see the rest of the album. After "The Weight" for example, "We Can Talk" immediately stood out to me as a fun song. If not for those two songs (Side B at this point) it would've been barely a 3.

One really good song and a lot of forgettable songs.

3.5 -- enjoyed this album! No song compares to the weight though.

The Weight is an all-time great song. Long Black Veil is a classic. This Wheel's On Fire is pretty cool. It's well crafted music, these guys don't suck but there's just a lot of filler on this album that wasn't captivating. Glad I listened, don't feel the need to ever revisit it.

The album as a whole didn't make much of an impression on me. I thought Tears of Rage was a weak opener but liked some of the middle songs. Obviously, The Weight is the standout song here.

A few good songs on there, but not quite my vibe.

I just find it boring. Always have.

Started out as a dud but there are some cool original songs later on. Particularly liked “We Can Talk”. Some of the songs have very whiney vocals

Favourite Songs: Tears Of Rage Chest Fever

The Weight is great, but other songs are ok

Meh. I'm not the biggest fan of classic rock, sorry.

This was okay. A real mix of sounds with lots of different inspirations that can be clearer heard. It’s not a stand out album for me though.

This was alright, proper happy clappy sit round the campfire stuff. Not my usual thing but alright for a 9am start

A little too mellow for my liking, chest fever my favorite - love the keyboard and bass on it, I don’t think it’s bad just not my favorite genre

This is one of those “you’re supposed to rate well” selections simply because bands you later like site THIS band “The Band” as an influence. And they have a hit or two that is immediately recognizable because it’s been played into oblivion. But I don’t really like it. I don’t want to throw it on. Today it’s annoying. Today I feel like giving it a 2. But I will go 3 cause Jeff Tweedy thinks The Band is grand. 3 Boolean: yes, I suppose so. The thing is, can you not hear this album before you die? Is it possible?

The album was ok. Honestly, I was underwhelmed by it. The Weight is a classic, but the album felt...flat, maybe untextured is a better word. It feels like an album of its time - one of those things that you had to be there for.

Worth the weight

Good. Almost a 4

You sort of know what you're going to get going into this, lots of typical US 60s rock. It's a decent listen.

Generic music from the late 60s. Sounds like Bob Dylan. Some good soul and blue notes here and there. 3/5

Pleasantly surprised for this recommendation as I would never given it the time otherwise. I knew the weight and this wheels on fire already. Last song is great. It's a bit heavy on the clanky piano, but it's a solid 3 nonetheless.

This is about as middling as I can imagine. Im not mad at it just it doesnt make me feel a whole lot. Just kinda does what a rock record from this time would do. The weight is a classic for sure but I feel like I know a cover better but i cant be sure. Maybe clapton? And my b side pick is this wheels on fire. Everything just comes together nice on that one. Even the keys which Im not too fond of over the rest of the album. But when its all said and done this was enjoyable enough but nothing all that special for me.

Dylan + i shall be released

An interesting sound & a product of its time; wavers in some spots, but overall enjoyable.

Good listen, a couple familiar songs, but nothing amazing

pretty decent album, only knew one song off of it, i think it was The Weight.

Pretty good, 60s folk rock

Always meant to have a listen, turns out it is a bit meh

5/7/26. Personally had a sick day from work and this was a nice album to sit back with. First time diving into The Band and liked their diverse but focused sound.

Really good blues rock album. No stand out tracks but pure quality!

Long Black Veil was good, but Johnny did it better

Wanted to love it more. Solid 3

Solid 60s stoner rock—chill but with a slight edge. Good background music.

It's impressive that The Band's freewheeling signature sound still feels unique 60 years on. But it's an acquired taste: at times it's super satisfying and mellow, others it's just an overly sentimental mess.

Nice debut album

Okay rock 'n' roll. 3/5

70’s

Fun classic rock from the band

I don't honestly know if I've ever heard an album that makes me feel as completely neutral as this one does. The complete absence of anything sounding either good or bad is kind of impressive.

Will be giving this one more listens, I enjoyed the vibe but one song didn’t particularly grab me

Decent, a couple of fun songs, but mostly just great background music

You again. You guys really sang so bad. I’m sorry I can’t stand more.

As many others probably, I knew The Weight, going into this, and it was in my liked songs on Spotify for a long time. But the rest of the album was not enough for me personally. But this makes sense, because to my ear, that song stands out from the rest.

As I’ve said before, the late 60’s is a crowded field, so you have to stand out. The Band does not. They are more like A Band. However, The Weight is good enough to push them to 3 stars by itself. Chest Fever was interesting too, but that’s about it.

a few good songs, but not really their best album

Tears Of Rage - 3.5/5 To Kingdom Come - 3.5/5 In A Station - 3/5 Caledonia Mission - 4/5 The Weight - 3.5/5 We Can Talk - 4.5/5 Long Black Veil - 3/5 Chest Fever - 3/5 Lonesome Suzie - 3/5 This Wheel's On Fire - 3/5 I Shall Be Released - 2.5/5

60s flavored white noise. not very interesting to me. i have apparently heard some of these songs before because i've seen The Last Waltz which I actually really enjoyed but i think the life of these songs is lost on me when not watching a live performance.

nuh uh..

More varied and engaging that I'd gave it credit for, there's some excellent tracks here

yeah vibe it out

Half of this is songs I know backwards and forwards, the other half is songs that sound a lot like those songs. Obvious Dylan influence, without Dylan's voice.

Me gustó

Not bad. Not really my jam either. A few standouts: We Can Talk (pretty groovy), The Weight (I mean, yeah), Long Black Veil (well that's a hell of a story), Chest Fever (the keyboarding on that opener - did ELP notice?).

this and cell structure 6.8/10

It was okay. Kind of boring…

There is a lot of lore around this album but it’s not their best outing. There are some soulful moments and the vocals are great but it lacks standout tracks to be a stone classic. 3.3

i went into this skeptical, id never heard of the band or any of their works before and i left pleasantly surprised, emotional lyrics with soulful production. a great blind listen

Classic Coldplay but only a few of the big hits

I struggled to form an opinion at first. The country side isn’t really my thing, but there’s a solid vibe throughout and for some reason it keeps reminding me of Counting Crows. That’s far enough from Dylan fortunately. Second listen sealed it, Chest Fever tips the balance. I’ll might come back to this one.

classic

Big Meh. It's like they weren't sure whether to have a party or read us poetry. Not every tune landed; I couldn't help but wish for more pep in the step. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - The Weight - Long Black Veil - Chest Fever

Easy Listening - good background in the sunshine

Ei jääny paljoa mieleen, suht perus americanoa/folkkia mitä ikinä. Tuntuu että näitäkin artisteja on hirmunen pinkka

2.75. Prior to seeing The Last Waltz a few years ago, I’d only ever heard The Weight, which is fine as a song. That concert film was good but did not make me want to listen to anymore of The Band. I do like it when drummers sing.

I thought I was going to like this album more than I did. The Weight is an all time classic but nothing else really stood out at all to me.

2.75 - Fine. I’m still thrown off every time I hear “Fanny” in that song.

Un récord indispensable de la banda canadiense-estadounidense. Definitivamente merece una escucha. 8/10 [KEEP]

-soulful voice -Nice piano and guitar riffs and also good fills -steady upbeat feeling in every song -"The weight" is my favorite song -if you like calm music, sometimes this can be too much, as there is always something happening -Vibes: -sunday morning -hiking or roadtrip -holiday feeling -Genre there's some soul influence so I'd say slightly soulful rock, old school rock too, but not hard rock (not an expert at defining genres) -3/5 because there were a lot of the songs with the same energy and for me I need occasional calm so it got a lil too much

Tubo bueno, tranquilo

I know a lot of people who love The Band. I just can’t get into them. I’d say they are just okay at best.

Very folkish...some good songs but again a genre I'm not familiar with.

I like the album cover and want to like this band because my dad does, but I dont like the twang stuff

Decent album

Mixed. Interesting but not amazing

It autoplayed into Nick Drake which only then made me realize that these guys aren't too far away from that vibe to me. I liked it

it sounded nice but i wasn't listening all that deeply fav song: Caledonia Mission

Besides The Weight, all the songs blended together.

The Weight is obviously the best song, there are a couple other tracks that are decent. I was underwhelmed

It's ok. But it's not really for me. This is Americana which is nice way to say country without the twang I think. There are a few songs here I wouldn't turn off and a couple that I definitely would. "Caledonia Mission" "Long Black Veil" could easily be cut to make this under an hour. "The Weight" is a cool, classic song, so that one makes the list. I like Levon's voice for the most part, but the other fellas get a little twangy, whiny for me. "This Wheel's On Fire" is an example. I definitely see why some folks like this, but it's not my thing. Calling it a 3 for historical significance and decent musicality.

Not my music taste, but great overall.

I like it, don't love it. Recognized the one hit song from this album. I think I just don't care for the lead singer's voice.

Thought this was a triple blind, but ended up being a double blind once I got into it. Overall I liked the album. It feels like this band could have been bigger, but maybe got market corrected by the Beatles or Springsteen or something like that…

Something about this band just feels a little amateur to me, and the tunes aren't quite earworms. They feel right on the cusp of being something really special, but just cant quite get there for me

Solid classic. Great cruisy album all the way through

Nice chill background music

It's alright. Bit dated.

Nothing outstanding

Relaxing way to start my Sunday morning. Good timing. Americana rock.

I wanted to like it more!!! It was good not great.

The Band oli minulle tuttu lähinnä Bob Dylanin taustayhtyeenä ja The Weight-klassikon olin kuullut muutamissa elokuvissa. Yhtyeen musiikki edustaa helposti kuunneltavaa, leppoisaa rockia. Yhden kuuntelun perusteella Music From Big Pink on ihan perushyvää pehmorokkia, mutta ei nouse monien aikalaistensa yläpuolelle. The Bandin vokalistit eivät olleet mitenkään erityisen loistavia.

I try to listen to each of these albums twice where possible. As I feel like in the past, I have been quick to judge an album. Normally this is me not enjoying the album, then later coming to appreciate its merits. Music From Big Pink is exactly this for me. The first time I listened to it, I was entirely unmoved and had that have been my only listening I would have written it off as an uninspiring drudge. However on second listening I have been able to appreciate the beautiful harmonies of Danko, Helm, Manuel and Robertson. And also identify that this is quite an unusual sound that has influenced hundreds of bands. There is a Soul/Gospel/Rock and roll fusion taking place that will touch all areas of popular music for decades to come. For me, it was well worth repeated listening. (3.375)

Classic rock ain't that bad.

Another album where I can say "ah, yes, I can definitely hear how influential this was" and also "not for me thanks".

i’ve heard of these guys before. i know the backstory of them being bob dylan’s band. (i’ve heard all of dylan’s albums already, outside of this generator.) but i haven’t heard this album yet, im excited :) incredible start. i’m on caledonia mission now. this album feels like you’re in an old saloon and it’s BUMPING. oh i know the weight. i don’t remember liking this song this much, it’s good. that being said, it might be the worst song so far. we can talk was kinda mid. i’m worried this album was front loaded. lonesome suzie is cute, i like this. i was immediately very put off by the vocals of i shall be released, now it might be my favorite on the whole thing. damn good song. some really good moments on here, but it had some parts i didn’t really care about. my favorite songs were tears of rage and i shall be released.

Honestly felt like this album was just okay and didn’t stray much from a standard level of competence, but I always love the friendly intimacy that you get from listening to The Band. It feels like you’re right there in the room with them listening to the songs being recorded. Faves: Tears Of Rage, Caledonia Mission, Chest Fever

pretty good

I think some of the songs are well composed and written, while others are kinda dull. The lyrical makeup of the album is vivid in some spots, but even when it gets descriptive, it doesn't give me a giant emotion. I think that it could have really ended after Chest Fever, but then I wouldn't have gotten Lonesome Suzie or I Shall Be Released, which are 2 of the best songs on the album imo. A lot of these tracks are clearly very gospel, soul and blues inspired which is a cool thing, especially mixing in the kinda folksy Americana thing that The Band probably knew well backing up Bob Dylan. But... midway through, I started thinking "man, I'd love to hear Ray Charles sing this or hear Billy Preston play that or hear Aretha on that..." etc etc. I'd just rather hear it performed by artists that I feel could do the songs even more justice. Imagine a universe out there somewhere, wherein Otis Redding lived through the 70s and got to sing Lonesome Suzie. Damn. Knock this bad boy down to 30-35 mins by taking off a few of the middle tracks that drag on a bit like We Can Talk, I'd say 4. But with a little bit of drag between The Weight and Lonesome Suzie, I guess I'm calling it a 3.5ish.

Allt í lagi

Gott þetta eina lag, en hitt bara miðlungs.

= the Beatles

I love the Band. Just wish I didn’t hear “the weight” so often through osmosis.

I don’t think The Band is bad by any means, but I’m just really not that into them

Recognised so many songs

agradable

The second album I've heard from The Band, and as with the previous one I find myself appreciating the musicianship whilst not really connecting with the songs.

Second one by this artist in a short space of time. Was surprised to hear the Absolutely Fabulous theme tune near the end.

Both instrumental and vocals easy on the ears. A single hit and the rest doable at a moderate volume

Another classic rock album I thought I would enjoy more. I would give it above 3 like 3.25 or 3.5 but not good enough for a 4.

Another record that I have heard a squillion times, having known a large number of people who like Dylan and The Band in my day. The slow songs on here drag a bit, but I like the faster tracks that sound a little honky-tonk or Cajun or whatever on here. And then there's "Chest Fever" with its memorable organ bits, and of course "Long Black Veil" - who can resist a folksong sung from beyond the grave. 3 stars - I enjoyed hearing most of this again today, but I feel like I've heard it enough times over the past decades to consider it done at this point.

I’ve never listened to The Band before, I think the only reason I know about them is from being mentioned on Stuff You Should Know (great podcast, worth listening to.) I think I’ve heard their version of The Weight but maybe not.. I know Long Black Veil from Dave Matthews Band, who does it better. Anywho, this album had some good stuff on it, that classic country blues rock blend. Not sure if I would intentionally search them out, but I wouldn’t skip it.

It was fine.

Not the most interesting thing ever. It's fine. Not amazing but still pretty good.

Bluesy rock with a smattering of quality, but feels like a lot of filler in between. I liked the fat there were different singers for each song, kept it fresh. 5.5/10

I initially was turned off by this album, but admittedly (more for my own conscience), I was in and out of the office as I was listening to it. But "The Weight" is an all-timer of a summer song. There's some A+ organ on this album - the opening of Chest Fever for example. Ultimately, it's got great production and at least one all-time song, but it's just not for me.

It's enjoyable. It's blues-inspired, which I thought was pretty cool. Favourite Track(s): Tears Of Rage Least Favourite Track(s): This Wheel's On Fire

It was fine? Good back ground music, not much more.

Decent

The music is just... safe. The sound isn't bad it's just dull.

Folk rock classic. A few great songs.

Good but dated

Garth for the win

Beautiful songs. I understand why this was included.

it was fine i think. i wanted to like it more than i did

The Weight and I Shall Be Released are great songs, but that's really all the album has to offer. I'm really not a fan of the "multiple guys screeching" style of lead vocals that made up such a big part of this album

It was okay. Sort of similar vibe to the Eagles, where it was pleasant but nothing really wowed me

Cool vibe. But not really my type of music

Love, love, love The Weight but not a great album overall

Decent rock-blues album. It has the Weight, which is a great song. Most of the rest of the album sounds similar to that one. Chest Fever is a solid track I'd never heard before. It's decent, but probably not something I'd listen to a lot. 3/5

Decent, always thought I'd like them more cos of the Dylan connection but they're not bad

Almost a 4, but I likely won’t return to this

enjoyable, easy listening rock

This grew on me the further into it I got. Everything after "The Weight" was alright by me... "Chest Fever" was especially intriguing. No real home runs, and I'm still trying to understand the zealotry this album inspires. Maybe you had to be there? It is very unique for its time I suppose. Technically good musicians but a wee bit sluggish, digging into that rootsy sound... like if the Grateful Dead decided to tune up and drink a cup of coffee.

It's just a bit meh.

Estuvo tranquilo, no es mi vibe

The brilliance of The Band is mostly lost on me. It was just okay. 3/5

Props to these guys for naming their band "The Band". Smart. I just wish they were worth listening to. Wasn't awful. Just alright. Probably a 2, but the name bumps it up

this had some good moments on there, don’t mind a little american country every now and then

They are very good musicians, but I was a little bored throughout the album. Got excited when The Weight came on, but there were only a couple of other songs that stood out to me. Cool album cover though.

Solid but not overly memorable

Rock album with influences from country, folk and blues. It's not too bad but was a little boring in parts. A few songs have some good riffs but kind of meander along and don't go anywhere, and a few songs were very slow and plodding. The middle run of Caledonia Mission, The Weight and We Can Talk was the clear highlight.

2 questions. Are The Band Canada’s greatest American band? And did Robbie Roberston ever collaorate on amything? Missed opportunity if not. Anyway this album. Some classics, plenty you’ve never listened to. But what of the classics? The Weight - what the fuck is it about? Bet this was a jam track with words added because they liked the groove they were in. Overall not a terrible alv but not a great one for me.

-Just a little bland -Bob Dylan seems to have helped create the best tracks on here

I like a few songs by The Band, and I like country music. The album Music From The Big Pink really isn't anything special. It's very middle of the road in a lot of ways. Some good tracks, some boring tracks, some messy tracks. It's almost entirely unmemorable. I would give it 2.5 stars if we could do a half star rating so I'll just round up.

For every sublimely satisfying track like The Weight, there's a Long Black Veil plodding along to remind you that The Band were just a group of talented, well-meaning (mostly) Canadians finding their way to and through some form of country soul music. Of course, one person's "plodding" is another person's "haunting" or "achingly beautiful," so there's plenty to disagree about in this assessment, and yet I can't help but appreciate only their most shining moments on this studio debut.

The album that basically started roots rock as a commercial genre. Deeply influential, great record to listen to on the porch, the highs are incredibly high, but they're not all winners.

Wel leuk

I hate myself for not enjoying it more. Fun fact: The Band got their name from being Bob Dylan's backing band.

The Band is definitely a group your grandpa would call "real music". Not really my jam (something about organs in rock music rubs me wrong), but appreciated the musicianship and enjoyed the listen. Many of the songs could be a theme song for a sitcom.

Soul-lastig mit erhöhtem fokus auf die intrumentalik

Good! Interesting

Just as advertised. A mellow mix of rock, blues, country and soul. Sunday afternoon music.

Bra, men rett og slett litt kjedelig! The weight er jo faktisk 11/10 da

Love The Weight so I was expecting a bit more from this. Think I need to give it another go when I can listen uninterrupted

*1968. *The Weight and Long Black Veil are on here. *I thought I would like this more than I did... it wasn't very exciting or dynamic. RATING - 6/10

more old sluggish and smooth rock music from the 60s. these guys collaborated with bob dylan before making this album by themselves. "big pink" refers to a dinky pink house these guys practiced in. all sorts of influence here. rock, blues, gospel, country... the genre is just slow and steady. the album literally crawls at a snails pace... there's some gems in here, but most of what i heard kinda sounded samey, with dragging vocals, quirky organs and wah wah guitars. this album is very... humble. some people might like this album better, but i dunno. not feeling this one too much i'm afraid. i would probably like this more if i saw these guys perform live.

Curiously enjoyable

No better or worse than the last Band album which only seems like a few days ago

Coming only two weeks after the Brown Album it's great to be able to compare the two. Tears of Rage made me wonder if I'd been a bit harsh about the earlier outing (strong 3*) but sadly not. Fortunately Danko's guitar makes even the least listenable song something worth spending time with. But even The Weight can't drag this above bang average 3*

I like the sound of The Band, but the vocals grate on me.

I liked it more towards the end

i don't really remember a lot of the middle but i didn't hate it. probably not an album i'll be putting on a lot but there's some good stuff here... also i recommend the siouxsie and the banshees cover of this wheel's on fire, it's pretty good

it's pretty good but not my favorite. enjoyed the second half more than i did the first. who knows, this could grow on me with more listens.

UGH, I want to LOVE this album but as it is I only LIKE it but I think one day I'll be really into this band. Really interesting songwriting and arrangement choices abound but I just can't help but find it all a little sleepy at this time. It must grow on me. Everyone watch The Last Waltz RIGHT MEOW!!!

Nice, classic, groovy

Musica que no me cabe. Lo intento pero no me genera nada. Buen álbum más allá de eso. 5/10

It's okay. 2.75 rounded up to 3

LOVED Chest Fever and HATED Lonesome Suzie. This album was all over the place for me. 3.5 rounded down.

Good but not amazing?

Something you'd hear at a bar in Memphis or New Orleans. Bluesy, country, old school rock. Neat, but not my favorite.

Weirdly good

I'm sure that this album was revolutionary and a breath of fresh air when it came out, but it's hard for me to put myself in the shoes of somebody who hasn't been exposed to this kind of music before. There are definitely other albums where I can listen to it and hear how revolutionary and ahead of its time and cutting edge they were, but I just can't with this one. As it is, the songs are mostly good but there's nothing here that sticks with me once the album has finished.

Kinda chill. No strong opinions but overall enjoyable.

Not bad

Quite liked

Fine…kind of had enough by the end. 3.5 marked down.

Limpid

Pretty classic Americana folk-country-rock with a little bit of soul sound. No frills, Rootsy, laid back feel. That loose-tight thing where it just sounds like buddies jamming on some tunes but they’re in lock step where everything lands as it should. A few songs are great. The rest is just fine, but sometimes feel like they’re lacking excitement to the music at times. Which is why I’d rather listen to the Last Waltz over any studio effort of theirs. Ultimately, I appreciate all of it, like some of it, and expect myself to revisit little of it often.

I think I've probably spent too much time trying to 'get' The Band - they really do seem to be another one of those bands that are much more interesting to read about than to listen to. Their place in music history seems secure but the records themselves sound very much of their time, and, well, just a bit boring these days. I appreciate that this is an album that helped formed the foundations for a lot of more recent bands that I love, but while it's great to have a grasp of the family history, at the end of the day, I'd rather be out with my mates than out with my nan.

I am sure I should know my musical history better than I do, and I suspect that The Band were important for some reason but while this is a decent album I find it's not really all that exciting, The Weight is a song that seems to stick out for me. It sounds a bit like Neil Young fronting the Small Faces, which might sound great in principle and it's good just not very inspiring.

OH groovy

Classic folksy rock ‘n roll and apparently among the more influential albums in the history of the genre. Like many rock albums from he 60s, its strength lies in the integration and reinterpretation of other genres that came before such as country, soul, gospel and blues. I’m not implying that The Band created just another Americana rock album here, there is certainly innovation with the textures created on this album. The song compositions are solid. Another album on the list that needs to be here, in part due to its influence on so much of the music that followed. I’m glad I listened to it intently several times, but it held my interest due to its historic importance more than the music itself. There are several great songs, but overall, it’s not really my thing.

I enjoy it, specifically the hits.

The Weight carries this album.

Basic boy 60s

Pretty vibey

good bit of harmonica but not too much

The blueprint for 1980s adult contemporary. Albeit with more soul and more groove.

It was fine!

I like the Band's sound, and loved The Last Waltz. While I appreciate their music, a whole album might be a bit too much for me. :) I think I'm more of a greatest hits listener for this group.
