Reviews (page 8 of 12)

Całkiem ok. Trochę taki vibe country.

One of my favourite parts about 60’s albums is that stereo that they have where the drums will be in one ear and then piano will be in the other. I liked the piano ear mmmmm.

I feel that what The Band does best is produce music that sounds like what you'd think if you made music. In that sense, being called The Band is the perfect description of the band. It's a bit ordinary listening to it in today's age, but not in a bad way, but in a comforting way. With some nice piano parts as well, which fit well with the music.

Very pleasant but unmemorable

I liked it but I didn't love it. I didn't find it particularly outstanding, but not bad at all. Its a mix of rock/americana, with some interesting choices from time to time. Looking at it now, it's nothing you haven't heard before. But, I think an important part of the value of this record is its moment in time, in 1968 this was innovative songwriting and composition. Clapton mentions this album as inspiration for "Leila", and several other bands were deeply influenced by it. By far my favourite song was "This Wheel's on Fire". Great songwriting and storytelling, and the instrumentation is so innovative and ahead of its time, the use of the Rocksichord is so weird and interesting. "The Weight" is also outstanding, a classic track. "Tears of Rage" is also good. I also liked Dylan's influence in the songwriting.

I’d give this 3.5 stars if I could. Better than most of the mid albums, but nothing special.

The Weight is a good song. Everything else was average.

I liked how the keyboards/organ sounded. 3 stars all the way though, not even rounded from 2.9 or 3.1 - a solid 3.00000

Decent enough but not exciting and didn’t give me much beyond the two songs I was familiar with. Early Americana just isnt my thing. My highlight of the album was learning that it was in fact Fanny and not Annie (as I’d assumed for many years) who he was offering to take the load off

Better than the big stink

Not a bad album, certainly one worth having on in the background. But it's not one that I think I could dive into. At least, I couldn't dive into it today.

Like the production and some songs stood out. Wasn't too excited to relisten though

This is a solid album and something I wouldn't have an issue with being on, but I don't see myself being excited to put it on. Warm, sounds effortless, great debut album. Makes sense to be on the list but this has all the pros and cons of being laid back sounding.

This is the second album by the band we are listening to. I've always hear of them held in high regard. My review is pretty much the same as last time. These guys are so natural. Relaxed doing what they do. The album has great warmth. The Weight is a jam. I just don't see myself thinking of this album in a situation that requires me to do so.

It's ironic they all hated each other so much, because this album sounds like they're having fun

Americana/roots rock with some country, and soul influence by The Band, which was their debut in 1968. They were a very talented group of musicians and this album is well made, but maybe my expectations were too high after I've read some stellar reviews of this album. I've found this a bit too boring for my taste, the songs aren't too memorable even if the album flows together well and it's consistent album. 3.5 overall rounded down to 3.

The quintessential middle of the road album. This would get a strong 2.5, however in order to differentiate it from the inferior 2s, the album gets a 3 even though it would be on the lower end of priority for listens amongst the other three's.

The Weight is a classic. Having looked into the history I can see why this is an important album and I like how it sounds but it doesn't stand out to me, maybe it did at the time. 3/5

It was okay.

This was OK. It didn't bowl me over and I didn't dislike it.

Honestly not as bad as the other The Band on the list - I don't know if it caught me at a good time, or it was because I was doing other things so paying less attention to it, but I didn't mind this at all. Still not *great*, but not awful.

quiet folky classic songs. "this wheel's on fire", "I shall be released" and "long black veil" with the verses sung in the correct order. I only just now learned this song was written in 1959.

Haven’t listened to much The Band. The Weight is a great song. Overall, I enjoyed the album and can see many influences in artists I enjoy later in the 70s.

not bad a bit forgettable

Meh. Seeing The Weight on here immediately turned me off to it

There’s just something missing about the Band. They’re great musicians as judged by their long careers, but the music seems to be lacking energy/emotion. The Weight is an all time great though.

Another pretty over-rated classic. Hugely influential in orienting 60s rock towards a folksy Americana sound, this album is full of traditional melodies, soul crooning, gospel tinged RnB arrangements and rootsy instrumentation, capturing a bucolic hippy mood. Some good songs, some nice guitar playing, too much organ vamping and a thin voice that I've never felt properly occupies the space created for it. There's also a lot more going on here than the stripped down barn-core aestheics suggest, the proto synth sounding keyboard stuff in particular.

Similar to other hippie-ish music from the timeframe (CCR, Dead, Doors, etc.). It was pretty classic, but only moderately my cup of tea.

Easy listening, nothing stood out.

Meh I prefer their second album

Lovely! Read while doing my morning pages at Coachella

Jammy, warm, I want it on in the background as a share beers with friends

Songs wie „The Weight“, „Tears of Rage“ und „I Shall Be Released“ gelten als zentrale Stücke des Albums.

its pretty good, kind of exactly what I expected. Some cool keyboard/synth (I think??) bits. Quite a lot of it hasn't aged so well. Favourite songs: to kingdom come, in a station, the weight, chest fever. Overall around 6/10

Band. 5/10

I get it, this was probably very influential and legendary back in the day, but it was not it for me. Just felt a little bland and straight for my taste

Another one of those good albums that just don't do much for me. The Weight is a classic and while the album comes off to me as a better Grateful Dead, it still doesn't do a ton for me. No complaints from me, but minimal praises.

Big time LP but some songs get lost on me. Some of their later LP are much, much better

A mix of absolute classics in between tracks that just didn’t get my interest except for the jarring production and mixing.

The weight was the only real standout but the rest didn’t resonate. Potentially worth another listen to see if something sticks.

Big dad music vibes, I recall my dad asking me to get The Weight from iTunes when he was new to the program. Anyway good solid album

Good folk dad rock. I might need to go back and re-evaluate my 3s after further listening. It’s become a collection ground for true 3s (stuff that I like but don’t love) and stuff that I like but don’t have enough exposure to know if I love. This is the latter.

I didn't know "The Band" was associated with Bob Dylan. I was familiar with "The Weight" but didn't know the rest of the album. It's a comfortable sound, reminds me of Wilco -- mellow, slightly country'ish rock. That said, none of the other tracks really hooked me, even after many listens, so it remains kind of a "high 3" rating.

Not bad, just not a sound that I'm a huge fan off. Some overlap with the problems I have with Springsteen and Gary Newman.

Starts out strong with amazing vocals on the opening track apparently penned by Dylan. Doesn't really keep that momentum going, though, as bad covers and a bad falsetto kick in. Better than I expected but ultimately uneven.

Naming your band The Band, and then doing nothing to ever differentiate yourselves from any other band seems misguided. Their debut is wortha listen, but this just dives deeper into a shallow songwriting pool.

Pretty good, first listen. The weight is a classic

not bad, not good. reminded me of when a lemon fell on my head and i stepped on an acorn at the same time. it's just that kind of music

I kind of expected more from a band called "The Band." This is a serviceable collection of songs, completely inoffensive and well made. I just wish they lived up to the article. Favorite track: "The Weight"

The Weight really is a banger. It’s good, but I don’t see myself listening again. 3.5 stars.

I know I've listened to this before but the only song that I know is The Weight. The vocals are comforting and familiar. Long Black Veil is one that I've heard and like before. It end on a high note. The last 3 songs are pretty good. I don't think it's one I need to own.

It's somewhat taxing to listen to. It's good, just not something I personally vibe a lot with.

Pretty good, for 1968 the quality is really good, the songs themselves are quite generic to put it bluntly, basic American rock songs with the classic background vocals, not entirely my thing usually but I found them quite enjoyable still. Although, there were some bangers on here, the first song was my favourite as it felt unique to the rest of the album and the second song was good as well, chest fever was a cool song as well with a nice riff. The cover I really like as well. Overall 6/10

First listen

Solid chill album. Take a load off Annie!

Pretty good. I enjoyed the blend of a few geners here. Pretty catch tunes.

This seems like a kinda boring version of schoolhouse rock. It gets a free +1 though because The Weight is legendary.

It was a nice mellow album

I liked this album more than their self-titled, which I also gave a 3. The Weight is an all time great song. I like the other songs, but there's something about the mix that turns me off. For 1968 couldn't it have been more polished than this? It's like being at a concert in a small venue and you're at the far side of the room and the instruments are drowning out their voices because the mics are barely on. I don't know, the songs themselves are good, but they don't elicit an emotional response for me most of the time.

Country-fried rock with plenty of soul and gorgeous vocals. Pleasant but not very arresting until things pick up to over the second half! Favourite Tracks: In A Station, The Weight, Chest Fever, The Wheel's On Fire (sweetie darling)

Yeah this is nice, good harmonies and interesting touches and lyrics. Doesn't stray too deep into country for my tastes.

Vibey folk rock Favorite track: the weight other picks: tears of rage, chest fever, i shall be released

good book reading music, nothing too oustanding but vibey

I want to love this because I love their self-titled and many of the tracks, but it’s just a very uneven album. The weight and I shall be released are excellent pieces of the Americana tradition, but this album spends a lot of time with somewhat uninspired takes on classic tunes. Highs are there, but lows are very mid. 3.5 rounded down

A 37-year old man drives across the state to the hospital where his wife has been airlifted to prematurely give birth to his first child. As he speeds down the highway, he listens to his favorite band - The Band - on cassette. Perhaps it is a recording of their first album, Music From Big Pink, and the first song on the album hits him extra hard as it discusses a daughter and father after all he is convinced his first child will be a girl. When the baby is born and he is shocked to find it a boy, he must scramble to find a name for the child. Thinking of the music that kept him company on the drive, the man names his new son Daniel, after the song "Daniel and the Sacred Harp". The man, driving his family on their vacations now that his children are grown enough to appreciate travel, still listens to The Band - no longer on cassette, but on CD. He ignores the protest of his children and continues to play only The Band on these trips, especially that of his eldest who is named after one of their songs, and as a teenager, is the one most prone to complain. Now the man's son is fully grown, and a man of 37 himself. He finds himself in an activity with friends in which he listens to 1001 of the Best Albums out there. The system recommends him "Music From Big Pink", and he listens with apprehension - aware of the scars his dad's music choices listens. But as he listens to it now, he realizes that the album is ... just fine and 3 out of 5 stars.

Pretty good album, the initial songs are very bland rock from the 60's but later songs are kinda prog

São musicas bem ok, nada realmente me pegou. 2.5

This album is a firm 3.5 for me. The problem is, we obviously can't give half stars on this website. So, the question is whether to bump this up to a 4 or down to a 3? On the one hand, this album is a classic, and I can recognize that it is truly a good album and highly influential. On the other hand, I didn't love it..perhaps it's not as good as I expected it to be? Instead I found parts of it kind of boring. I don't know... I have no real desire to return to this one, which has kind of been a hallmark of 4 and 5 star ratings from me.

I could take or leave most of this. The Weight outlying as it's so comfy and relaxing; that's without digging into the lyrics at all. You get a little laugh when it's addressed to "Fanny" too, so that's a bonus.

There's some really great layers in this album, and some nice tracks overall. I really hate the panning choices that were so prevalent at this time though as it takes me completely out of the listening experience. One of the more surprising choices you can make in mixing is to have bass frequencies off center, as it can give this off kilter / unbalanced feeling, and that certainly happens here right from the start. To me it feels like my right ear (that has the bass guitar in it) is being weighed down compared to my left. I listened to a remastered version of this album to see if that was changed and it wasn't. It sucks to have something like that really put me off from an album but it's this overbearing thing that really blocks me from sitting and listening and focusing on other stuff. Not to harp on it too much but it's like a painter making a beautiful vista landscape and then painting all of the trees a hot pink color. There's nothing wrong about it, but it takes so much of my attention. I did like "In A Station", and "The Weight" is a classic rock radio staple. I've heard this track probably a few thousand times in my life while growing up in a family that drove everywhere and had classic rock on the radio every time. It's a famously catchy piece that has such a cool conversational chorus and those great opening lines that set the stage: "I pulled in to Nazareth Was feeling 'bout half past dead I just need someplace Where I can lay my head "Hey, mister, can you tell me Where a man might find a bed?" He just grinned and shook my hand "No" was all he said" "The Weight" is such a great title for this song.

Better than I expected! I thought I might have a similar reaction as I did to the Allman Brothers, but there were some stand out songs for me and "The Weight" was pretty brilliant--might have been the first time I really listened to it carefully. "Lonesome Suzie," "To Kingdom Come," and "I Shall Be Released" were some of the other ones.

It was fine. Enjoyable enough, but middle of the road. I don't remember a single song from it and I just listened to it twenty minutes ago.

Americana folky.

The Grateful Dead for 10th grade English teachers who the students ship with the manic pixie dream girl art teacher simply because they’re both in their early 30s and were caught once splitting a joint after chaperoning senior prom. Cute, pleasant, no complaints while it’s on, but it inspires very little passion in me personally.

Music from Big Pink" was a highly influential album. While its sound might seem straightforward today, that’s only because so many artists have drawn from its raw, rootsy style and expanded upon it. I do enjoy its sound.

influential folk rock album. Highlights: "Chest Fever", "The Weight"

Started slow but I thought it really picked up after “the weight”. Stand out for me is long black veil and chest fever.

It’s fine.

Some tracks on here I kind of like - “The Weight” and “Long Black Veil.” “The Weight” sounds quasi-familiar but it might just be me thinking of something else that sounds similar. Great album cover - love that guy being held by his feet as he reaches over the top of the piano to play.

counting crows but from the 60s, some good songs, probably a grower

Classic 70s rock. Never heard of these dudes specificly. The Weight is the banger on the album, the only track I recognized. A few tracks remind me of Deep Purple. Solid album tbh

I really love the Band, and even I can admit that a couple of songs on here are a bit annoying. This isn't their best album, but I still have a great time with it.

A strong introduction album to the Band.

Men bare lidt... Meeh.. Lyder som alt andet uden at gøre noget særligt.

Really good rustic folk-R&B-rock, which oozes personality. I've recently reviewed the Band's self-titled album, and for me this record is more consistent and has far more highlights. The organ on Chest Fever is a particular high point. Best Tracks: - The Weight - Chest Fever - We Can Talk Worst Tracks: - The Wheel's On Fire Rating: 7.5/10

A good listen. Some classic stuff.

Pretty good, if a bit plodding. 'The Weight' stands out a mile above everything else.

Completely ok dad rock

Pleasant album but as it happens, just kinda enters one ear and exits the other, which makes it kinda hard to keep track of what's happening after a while. But what I enjoyed the most it's the combination of chill instrumentals with the organs which gave it a sound that's a little more unique that other older rock I've heard so far. It's nice but nothing I will return to

The Weight really is a banger. It’s good, but I don’t see myself listening again. 3.5 stars.

I don’t really understand why this is considered such an important album. Has a couple good songs on it and the production is loose in a way that seems ahead of its time but I have no need to hear 80% of this again.

Okay album.

Ok well now I know the origin story of The Band. I'm still not really into Bob Dylan. The Weight is immediately recognizable. Long Black Veil is alright.

nothing really stuck besides the big hit but nothing i disliked either

I like "The Weight", but can do without the rest. My ear hears singing as melody more so than lyrics, and the lead singer's voice isn't that great, nor does it pair well with the music. I've heard much worse though: 3/5.

Först och främst, vilket fantastistk omslag. Tears of rage: Come to church-känsla. To Kindome Come: Måste inspirerat Rolling Stones.

Pretty sure I’ve heard all I need to hear of the them

Always knew this hit off of this one (The Weight -- which is a great song) But didn't really know the album as a whole until much more recently. At which point I became completely obsessed over 'Chest Fever'. I can't get enough of that organ riff. Also, TIL the cover was painted by Dylan, and the album jacket was designed by Milton Glaser.

Well, "The Weight" I knew. Never heard any of the other songs. And not so surprised. The songs are ok but no special highlight.

Well at first I though this was generic sounding music from that era. But now, after reading more about them, I realized that they were the first and influenced more bands that I can name. Too bad I don't smoke weed anymore cause this would have been exactly the kind of music I'd be chillin' with my friends during my 20s. Even though this is not the music I usually like, I'm adding this album to my "classic rock" playlist.

Not that fond of Americana, but there are exceptions. Fleet Foxes for example. Who clearly owe a debt to this record. Less so the white boy bluesy stuff such as Caledonia Mission. We Can Talk sounds like an alternative theme tune to 80s UK buddy TV show Minder. Pretty awful lyrics. The Weight is fantastic. Love this. Love the Rotary Connection cover also, possibly more so. I like This Wheels on Fire less, and the more famous Julie Driscoll/Brian Auger cover from AbFab loads more. The Dylan Basement Tapes version is also better. Overall this is alright. I am pretty sure I preferred the eponymous follow up.

Good enough but didn't grab me

boomer music, not bad, not great

a friend of mine rly loved this one... for me the sound palette just doesn't quite hit. there's musicianship here for sure, it's just not my kind of textures. i might eventually change my mind tho... maybe.

Achei ok 3 estrelas

Very bluesy, reminiscent of the Grateful Dead. Highlight was "Lonesome Suzie"

overall i found this album boring. u can't break with bob dylan and assume you're still "the band" within ur own right. that being said, "the weight" is a banger and "this wheel's on fire" was covered by siouxsie and ended up being the theme for absolutely fabulous, so credit where credit's due

Really good, but Imho there is much more rock from this period that I much prefer.

Schöni, Stimme und Harmonie. Teilwies Countrylaschtig. Ds gfalltmer eig. Aber hald dänn doch Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ach, ich finds ächli langwiilig.

The Weight is the clear standout here. I also really liked Chest Fever and I shall be released. Rest was a bit forgettable, not bad, just didn't leave much of an impression on me.

6/10 A couple of songs make this a bit better than average. but not much better. 12-27-2024

It’s pretty decent but then you get one of the greatest songs of all time right at the end.

Don’t hate it, but it doesn’t do anything for me at all. Often sounds too close to the Grateful Dead for me to enjoy much.

Not bad, defo hear the folk, country, rock influence from Dylan

I rated my last album from The Band as a "down homey good time" and gave it three stars. I tend to rate multiple entries increasingly harshly however Music from Big Pink is also a down homey good time, expertly executed while still sounding charmingly extemporaneous. A lovely album but, to my ears and sensibility, it drags a bit the whole way through. Instead of chill it hits me as restrained and maybe even timid in places.

Songs 4-7 would be ranked a 4. Some in the beginning and end (To Kingdom Come, The Wheel's on Fire, and Suzie) are closer to 2's. There is very little cohesion.

Solid bluesy rock, but nothing super special going on here.

Some of the songs on this felt a little too restrained to me, especially the first few. It did get better as it went on, and I do really love The Weight (was lucky enough to see Mavis Staples and Dave Matthews perform it together earlier this year). I'm familiar with wildly different versions of Long Black Veil and This Wheel's on Fire (Ab Fab, anyone?), versions I prefer over the ones on here, but they were still good in their own right. Also liked Chest Fever.

Solid stuff. Not mind blowing.

a nice sound though the hit of the album stands above the rest

ok, i understand. this is good, this is a classic. but it's just too... "American". somehow it is R&B-ish and never-ending, like an orgasm that never came. 3/5

An amalgam of a bunch of other 60s/70s bands. The weight is an obvious nice listen but their nondescript name really is fitting. I'd revisit when listening to other bands from the same era. 3.5?

Seemed boring to me, arised topics are very far from my life

Nice soundtrack for driving around the city

Easy listen, but not much jumps out at me. The Weight is a classic song and the rest of the album is good, but i think it lacks some sort of “it” factor that woupd draw me in more. Chest fever is probably my #2 song here.

Love The Weight, otherwise this album wasn’t for me.

we just had another album by the band a month ago. i liked this one more but it's still not great.

Altlhough I´ve never heared of them before it sounds very familiar to me. Nice country/folk-rock album. favourite: "The Weight" 3,5

I groaned when I saw it was another 60s album, but this was enjoyable. 3* Highlights: lonesome suzie

Hani scho kennt, find's cool aber ned umwerfend:)

Tears of Rage: Mir gefällt, was harmonisch passiert.

I enjoyed this album, I’m glad it wasn’t overly Dylan influenced. They have lots of variations in the sound and none of them drag on too long. I wouldn’t say any of it really drew me in but was lovely background music or boppin around on a walk.

Pretty standard late-60s rock. Nothing groundbreaking, but not bad..

eyo erste reviewwww lesgoooo okay hans es 3.5 gfunde coole stuff aber knaoo am widerreinhören verbi gebi album würdi sege stabil wenigstens kei country

Overall I like it. Probably wouldn’t listen to the whole album again, but I do like some of the songs enough to listen to them again.

"Wait. Let’s try this again. Do you see the band on stage?" "No, I don’t see The Band, that’s a different group entirely!" "On stage, Skippy! Look, see the band?" "No I don’t!" "Get rid of those John Lennon glasses and look! There, there’s the band!" "No, that’s not The Band! The Band is performing later on. Who is onstage." https://youtu.be/MC7lUOT3xPg This is the best thing about The Band. They should be the backing group for Dylan; not everyone should go out on their own. Without focus, this is a jam on record. A couple of classic songs (The Weight, Long Black Veil) surrounded by forgettable, generic bluesy folk rock. 3⭐️ (2⭐️ of which are for The Weight)

The weight is the stand out song by far. The rest is good too but doesn't reach the same level.

Starts with Tears of Rage and just keeps on sobbing. The Weight is the only thing keeping this album from floating off in tears.

Music From Big Pink was an album that did take a little while for me to really start to get used to it but when it did, the album did do it's job pretty well. Most of the songs generally sounded pretty good and were also pretty good at making some beautiful stuff at points. It did occasionally have parts where i can say that they weren't really the most pleasant to listen to such as the instrumentation getting to be a little too much but thankfully, those parts were pretty rare. This album is not a bad one and had some pretty good sounding parts but that's probably what you would expect from a band with the most generic name ever. Best Song: This Wheel's on Fire Worst Song: Tears of Rage

pretty good. didn't stick that muhc. seemed a little default

It's not offensive, but for the life of me I can't work out why they made this album. Doesn't feel tight in the slightest.

Good Background music

Think I like it. Maybe. Deserves another listen at least.

strong album with some bangers

Classic. Super nostalgic and homey sounding. A couple songs are a little flat I find, I think those more willing to submit to the vibe can ignore those mediocre points, but it’s still such an accomplishment of an album.

2.5 rounded up boooooo!!you boring highlights: to kingdom come, the weight, this wheel’s on fire (dec 3 2024)

3.5☆/5 10.31.2024

Already had The Weight on few of my playlists, otherwise good, but nothing extraordinary.

Truly one of the bands of all time.

Just ok...nothng bad, but nothing really memorable either.

I've heard the album multiple times. The Band's best songs are some of my favorites all time. I really like Robbie Robertson's writing, Levon Helm's singing, and Garth Hudson's keyboard contributions. So why can't I rate it higher? On a lot of the songs I don't think that Richard Manuel's voice has the heft to make some of these songs work. Perhaps under the hand of a different producer some of these songs could shine brighter. When the songwriting is world-class, like on The Weight or I Shall Be Released, the production/singing issues somehow add to the impact. But when the songwriting is just good, it feels like something is missing. Strong 3 stars.

Liked it well enough, not really my type of sound

Alight

I always thought they did some fascinating stuff. I think, now that I'm older, I just don't appreciate their sound, which can seem a bit whiny to me. That said, I appreciate the material, especially The Weight and I Shall Be Released.

Never heard of this band or album! I’m excited! Well, I probably would have really liked this album freshman year of high school, when I was super into Led Zepplin, The Byrd’s, The Eagles, Janis Joplin, etc. Really like “I Shall Be Released”….but more because I’m like “Oh….that might be fun as an a Capella arrangement” than because it’s actually poking my heart. Definitely interesting to hear about their background with Dylan, as well as their influence on other artists. I can definitely hear those influences. Full disclosure: I listened to this with one hearing aid on because the battery was dead in the other and I didn’t have a replacement. That said, I think I heard enough. Usually, when someone makes the choice to include an organ in their aural landscape, I have to make the choice to exit the premises. My system has a visceral reaction to organ music.

Pleasant album - surprised to hear This Wheel’s on Fire. Not sure I would listen to it again

I can't get into The Band, no matter how hard I try. I think covers of The Band songs are, generally speaking, better than the originals. Case in point: The Weight. It's a fantastic song, but this far from the flagship version. Maybe this is unpatriotic of me as a naturalized Canadian, but I thought this album was dull. A high 2, rounded up to 3.

Nothing resonates with me quite like The Weight, but it was still quite pleasant.

Self indulgent. Nice production. Sounded a bit like they were just jamming rather than performing well written songs.

I could see myself listening to this album while cooking or baking, knitting or painting. It has a cosy and safe feeling but nothing that I would listen to for the sake of the music itself. There is no song that I remember in particular, but overall not a bad listen.

Another good find! I'd give it a 3.6 but will round down to 3. Tears of Rage, Chest Fever and I shall be Released were my favourites.

I strongly disliked the previous album by The Band on this list. This is better - loads of variation in tracks, and quite fun to listen to. A few songs I vaguely recognised here and there. This Wheel's on Fire was my favourite track.

Don't think I enjoyed this as much as the previous the band album we've had on this list. Still thought it was pretty decent though and I recognised a few tracks here that I didn't know were the band. The absolutely fabulous theme tune for one. I know I shall be released but no idea which cover version, pretty sure it's not this version though. 3.5

We Can Talk about this one if it left you with Tears of Rage. Don’t feel like The Weight is all on your shoulders.

It's okay

- Not shocked that "The Weight" is the only track in this album I know; it stands head-and-shoulders above everything else. - Like the rambling, unfinished nature of much of this. But there is way to much organ/keyboard for my liking. - I am sure this is influential. But The Band walked so that so many others could run.

Can't go wrong with The Band

The guitar and piano were very good on this album. I found the lyrics a little all over the place though.

Guitar definitely carried most of it

Whatever. Just like the other album from The Band that we had to listen to. Seriously you name yourselves "The Band" and then this is the best you can do? How pretentious can you be? Totally mid '60s "southern" rock. Very mid. Most of the dudes cannot sing well at all. Also "The Weight" is a super overrated song, makes no sense, dude on lead vocals does not sound good, who the heck is Fanny and why is she taking a load off? The song makes no sense. I don't get why this band is on here at all let alone twice so far. Stupid.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. couple tracks lag a bit, but enjoyed guitar & piano. lyrics & vocals are nice. The Weight is best track on album. 3.5 stars

Enjoyable enough, plus contains the Ab Fab theme tune.

OKAYYYY

It’s alright and better than the last one though of theirs.

No. 262/1001 Tears of Rage 3/5 To Kingdom Come 3/5 In A Station 3/5 Caledonia Mission 3/5 The Weight 5/5 We Can Talk 3/5 Long Black Veil 3/5 Chest Fever 4/5 Lonesome Suzie 3/5 This Wheel's On Fire 3/5 I Shall Be Released 3/5 Average: 3,27 The Weight is an awesome song. Otherwise this wasn't that great. I prefer their self- titled album.

I listened to this whilst cleaning so I didn't read the lyrics along with the music. I regret this as really I only experienced the 'vibe' of the music instead of paying attention to the words. That said, I enjoyed some songs on the first listen. It was a very different world back then without autotune and I appreciated the rawness of some of the harmonies. I'd give this album another go.

Kudos for birthing roots rock—and “The Weight” is one of my favorite classic rock songs. The rest feels like a bunch of cool guys jamming in a house, but in a historically important way.

if you've ever wanted to know the answer to the question "What would it sound like if a bunch of Canadians made Civil War songs?" this is a pretty good proximal answer

The weight er frábært lag.

Is it possible this is a 3? Maybe a 4? “The Weight” does a lot. 3.5 I’m sorry.

It’s a pretty fun collection of songs with great musicianship throughout, and quite impressive how different it sounds from their output as Dylan’s backing band at the time - still kind of folk influenced but more of a psychedelic Americana sound. It flows pretty well and there are some very evocative lyrics here and there, but unfortunately other than the stone-cold classic The Weight nothing really leaves a lasting impression. The vocals are especially lacking, as The Band share singing duties throughout the record and no one has a particularly distinct or interesting voice, and they’re either quite bland or outright bad on songs like Lonesome Suzie

Classic 60’s Americana rock. Chest fever 🤘

I didn’t like this album nearly as much as I wanted to. Hard to explain. Lead singers voice kept reminding me of Randy Newman.

Pretty decent album. Feels like I've heard 'The Weight' somewhere else, but not sure from who. Or maybe I'm just imagining. Anyways, nothing that really stood out, but not bad either. Solid 3.

Don't get me wrong, this album is good - and an interesting listen. I listened to this a few times, and I really did enjoy a lot of the songs on here; but the latter half of the album really detracts from my rating. This record feels so top heavy, I found myself disinterested and left feeling like they ran out of things to say and it kind of just all blurred together in a bad way after We Can Talk. Definitely would listen to this again, but the tapering off toward the end where all the songs sound the same or touch the same concepts really didn't do it for me. Tears of Rage was a damn good song though, I listened to that like 5 times and loved it.

May as well get Jackbot to write this review cause that's about how I feel towards this thing, it's got that dad rock vibe and makes for alright background music I guess, but it's not really my thing. Actually that last bit isn't true this is normally massively my thing but I just didn't have enough to sink my teeth into. Didn't help that after each listen a beach boys track played and juxtaposed the mediocrity. Then on the third listen a track with them and bob Dylan played and was infinitely better. Not a bad all by any means it's even got some tracks I'll definitely return to. 6/10 Fav tracks - Tears of Rage, In a Station, The Weight, We can Talk, This Wheels on Fire Least Fav - None really

Didn’t hate it didn’t love it very middle of the road for me

Decent album.

Piola agradable

Oh, The Band. Every time I start the album I'm like, "Oooh yeah. Nice vibe!" Every time I get to the last few tracks, I'm like, "GAHHH! Make the muppetian falsetto STAHP!" Overall, I definitely dig it, but it's pretty clear to me that their strengths lie in their abilities as a backing band, not backing vocalists, up to that point for a reason.

Love the origin story of The Band being Bob Dylan's backing band and just decided to do their own thing if I remember correctly. This album was pretty run of the mill but still enjoyable. Nothing super crazy on here, but The Weight is an awesome song. Easy enough listening to music.

Definitely knew The Weight, nothing else stood out. It's a laid back album. I'm not going to scrutinize it closely, but it feels like (most) every track is the same plodding tempo. Bit sleepy. Songwriting's great. Not enamored with the vocals.

3.5/5. Pretty good, about what I expected. I would not mind listening to this again.

Yeah, this was OK, but not something I would seek out to listen to again.

I thought I would like this more. The weight is an all timer, but overall I thought this was just OK.

3 stars

Im kind of ambivalent here. A short, sharp, well played album is always welcome. I only know them via Dylan and enjoyed The Weight, though im not sure who did it first. But the vocals are weak and there is nothing incendiary here.

Forgettable even though I heard this album a bunch growing up. 2.5 stars

Not bad, but I liked the cover more than the music

Appreciate the importance of this album but it's not one I can get into, although I would not argue it's bad. 3.5*

The Weight is so good but the rest didn’t jump out at me.

This album of theirs never stood out to me.

Started off good but I slowly got tired of it as the album went on. It's fine; there are a few bangers in there, but a lot of the songs are forgettable. A decent Americana album overall.

Little bluesy, little funky. Crazy how modern this album sounds. A lot of it is slow and sleepy for my liking but in general not bad.

Not bad, but it lacked something to really set it apart from other southern folk rock

This was a little too dad rock-y, a little too folksy for me.

As much as I like and appreciate The Band their albums always seem like a nostalgia tour that makes me more sad than reflective. It’s got its high points but there’s some meh here too. If it was half’s I’d say 3.5 but …

Perfectly serviceable classic rock. I didn’t realize I would know “The Weight” but that’s probably why this album is on the list.

The Weight carried this album and there wasn't much else I enjoyed here. But it wasn't awful, just a bit turgid.

Some good songs, some duds, but The Weight is god tier

A lot of the tracks start with very interesting sounds and ideas, but then somewhat devolve into something that sounds similar to all the rest of the tracks when the vocal takes hold. I think that's a shame because they clearly have had other ideas. I'm thinking of tracks like 'Chest Fever', and 'This Wheel's On Fire' as examples for how it can work. I think they should lean more into that stuff Standouts Chest Fever This Wheel's On Fire 3/5

Extra star for The Weight, the rest is pretty forgettable

Quite liked

This is an album you always hear mentioned when it comes to influential and classic albums. While I enjoy The Band, I've never listened to this album from top to bottom. "The Weight" alone gets it a few stars, add in "I Shall Be Released", which has been covered by everyone & their mother over the years, and you have a strong collection of songs. From the opening tune you can feel the passion of Levon & Robbie's voices, they aren't posing, they're releasing emotions. I like "Long Black Veil" and the storytelling throughout the album. Not all killer, but not all filler, it rolls and fits together, reflects the time it was released and it's cohesive.

3 alright, carried by the weight and a couple others

Not really fan of these dudes voices for the most part. Some very good songs tho. Hope I will like the follow up a bit more 🙏

Fiilis album, kivoga vibbisar.

The Weight is great. I like the intro of Chest Fever. Overall I thought it was alright. Not great.

Just relaxing and enjoyable :)

Sounds like your typical 60s album. I don't know why I had to listen to this over other albums. It's pretty basic.

They really just chose the default band name

Kind of impressed. Had never thought much of the band because they are soft rockbut thos album was a great surprise. Very chill easy to listen, very well produced and song order flowed like wine. Cool to put as background on a camping trip or something like that. The slow falsetos songs didnt do it for me.

It's ok

#294. The Weight is one of the best songs from the 60s, but the rest of the album isn't nearly as good. 3/5: fine

No real problems but nothing really stands out either. The Band really is the definition of middle of the road when it comes to music to me. Immensely talented but their songs feel as generic as their band name. the Weight is a pretty solid song tho

Die Band Bobs. Ganz gut.

The Weight is so good.....the rest of the album sounds similar just without any really really good songs. Would have loved to see them live.

And yet another album by The Band. I don't mind this kind of country rock. It's actually quite nice to listen to it. I'm sure it's nice to listen to them on long drives through the USA, but I'm not looking for this kind of music and probably won't listen to this album again. 3/5

Im Down with this, I remember the weight from the Easy Rider soundtrack. Easy to listen to

Long Black Veil was my favorite of this album.

Recognized The Weight. Enjoyed Chest Fever, but everything else was just ok.

Sounded fine but super bored me

Not bad. A bit boring. The Weight will always play. Easy Rider is the lesson plan for America in the 60’s hippy era. Man, what a weird time it was. Still, better than what we got going down now.

I like a few songs on this - I realize it's the great, iconic rock album from Dylan's band and I'm expected to jump on the Band wagon, but I never much liked their sound without him. This is mediocre stuff for me. The Weight is a keeper - Long Black Veil is a popular cover and I've heard much better versions. Jagger, for example....

A mild experience, good instrumentals, however no memorable parts for me.

Good, easy listening music. Nothing particularly crazy, but a good listen. Funnily enough I recognized some riffs that *definitely* influenced folk/folk rock bands I listen to.

Couple oldies. Ryan’s first concert. 3/5

Nice chill songs 3 ⭐️

I could tell it was influential and well-crafted and all that, but it just didn't resonate with me.

Good album

Enjoyable but very few moments that stand out as particularly extraordinary. Though I do love I Shall be Released. Checked out the Dylan version after I found out he originally wrote it, and, to my suprise, found myself prefering the cover* over the Dylan version, which I rarely do. *(Though their version was recorded earlier, so…) The Last Waltz’s live version with Dylan co-singing might be even better though… might actually check out that album and finally get to watching the Scorsese movie just for that moment alone.

Had no idea they sang the Weight! Good nice vibes

This album gives a new definition to the terms bland and mediocre

To me, this album is reminiscent of the the name The Band in and of itself - pretty generic. I didn't find it grating or annoying to have on in the background while working, nor did it really make me stop and listen either. I do like their more prominent use of the piano whereas alot of bands in that era and decades after either have piano-centric tracks or strictly guitars and drums, The Band blends both in a very pleasant way. I don't think I'll go out of my way to delve more into The Band's discography, but I wouldn't skip them if they come up on shuffle either. Notable Tracks: Tears of Rage The Weight Chest Fever (cool keyboard intro and solo) 6/10

I have always liked the Chicago sound with the brass section. This album was a little too freeform for me. I definitely like their later stuff.

Great vibes, but nothing that stands out too much. I don't notice too much flow between songs, but there a lot of good tracks like We Can Talk, Lonesome Suzie, and Caledonia Mission.

Given everything about this I feel as though I should love it much more than I do. It’s just fine to me. I understand the influence it had, but the pieces don’t seem to come together for me. Favorite songs were The Weight, We Can Talk, and Chest Fever.

La famosa The Weight

Rento ja hyväntuulinen.

Surprisingly more mellow and less compelling than expected.

There are a few standout classics on here. I only ever knew the Julie Driscoll version of This Wheel’s on Fire and unfortunately that is the one that still stands out for me. Her voice is magnificent on it. But here it’s a little d’ombre although still a classic song. The Weight and I Shall be Released are timeless and iconic - my folks always loved The Band but in my mind they should have spelt it differently (think The Banned) and caused more controversy but that was just a flight of fancy. Three absolute blinders and the rest are a bit samey for me.

The Weight is a classic. Their cover of the Long Black Veil was not as good as Johnny Cash’s version. I was surprised to hear the AbFab theme song. And I just learned it was cowritten by bob dylan.

This album contains a couple of my favorite tracks from The Band - "The Weight" and "Chest Fever" - but overall the album is just okay

That was so much better than I expected. The only gripe is the vocals were a little bit 'Dog & Duck', but as a whole it was really good.

The Band. The Album. The Songs. The Music. The mid.

Better than the other band album, but still a 3

The Band is a weird one for me. A friend of mine came back from his first year of college with a huge newfound fandom for them, and one summer our entire soundtrack was one of their live albums. His band covered "Long Black Veil" and I actually think his cover is better than the original. In any case I have a certain nostalgic relationship with them that affects my ability to objectively judge their output. I think this album is good, it's not as good as some of their others, but at least there are less references to the confederates in this one. I wouldn't call it revolutionary or particularly great but The Band are good at combining that lazy country style in to rock music, more so than the Allman Brothers and others of that persuasion. They're less polished and seem more authentic I guess? For me that's a good thing, for others it's a detraction. Long Black Veil, The Weight and I Shall Be Released are the picks for me, but the whole album is decent.

It's ok 3/5

Didn’t think I was going to like this but it was alright.

The Weight always makes me happy. It makes me think my parents. Puts me in my happy space.

It’s alright

has some classic tracks and was fun

I didn't dislike it but it was very samey. I recognised The Weight. Stand-out: This Wheel's On Fire

Weird album. Three good songs but didn’t like the rest very much. Songs all seemed pretty random and haphazardly thrown together. Didn’t really do much for me overall.

Good in parts. Some of the vocals are a bit too plaintive, some of the lyrics a bit too wilfully obscure for my tastes, but the musicianship is good and there are some great songs: The Weight, Chest Fever and Lonesome Suzie

In general, when it comes to The Band, I always understand why people would enjoy their music, but I also understand that it will never be for me. It's like we started off at the same point but then branched in irreconcilably different directions. There are songs like This Wheel's On Fire where I have a pretty good time, but others where I'm just politely smiling and waiting for it to be over.

Some good some meh. Standout songs: Caledonia Mission Chest Fever

Not bad, not especially good. It's 60s music that left me shrugging. 2.5/5

The Weight

Classic

This is a solid album that is pretty typical for this list, I enjoyed it but didn't stand out as either great or bad.

I feel like I’m betraying the Band by giving them a 3. The Weight, I Shall Be Released, and their version of Long Black Veil are all amazing, but the rest of the album was just good, not great. Definitely iconic for the 60’s though.

Nothing on here as good as The Weight

I enjoyed this more than I was expecting. I recognised the song “The Weight” and it's bugging me, where I recognised it from. If this album were a football team, it would be comfortably stuck in mid-table, no chance of being relegated, but no realistic chance of Europe, but a solid team on their day.
