The Band. Just a band. If you compare the version here of Long Black Veil with the hearftfelt Johnny Cash version, for example, it highlights how turgid and plodding this is. They sound like they are struggling through this album, so it's no wonder I did too.

Favorites: The Weight

Not really a fan of this but didn't dislike it as much as the other one of theirs I got on this a few months ago. This time, when reading about it, I discovered that they were Bob Dylan's backing band right before recording and releasing this album and that makes so much sense. I like The Weight but I like others versions I've heard better. I'd also heard other versions of I Shall Be Released and meh. I won't listen to this again. Really cool art though.

Incredibly boring country rock. Dr Hook came along a couple of years later and did it so much better.

Seriously, "The Band" again? And with this album?? Wow, I don't get it! And I don't like it! I don't need to listen to it a second time to maybe discover something I like. It sends a chill down my spine. THIS CAN GO!

shocked by how bad this was. some of the worst vocals i have ever heard. started a 3. then was a 2. Rage 1 by the end.

This album has some perfectly mediocre songs, and plenty of awful singing. Dylan taught them well.

I'm sorry, I know people enjoy this band, but there is nothing in this album for me. I had to skip part of a song for the first time on this 1,001 album journey. Why do they sound so whiny all the time? Canada, you can do better.

This was a tough one. I had a hard time making it through this album, and I knew I would when I heard that first song. I was familiar with The Weight, but that's it. I liked Chest Fever, but that's about it. I like This Wheel's on Fire better on AbFab. I know people love this band/album but I just don't understand what they hear in them/it.

Nothing stands out to me. Even the songs I am familiar with are quite boring. This project is making it clear that I prefer experimental things, even if they end up being bad. This Wheel's on Fire is comically bad. I Shall Be Released has an almost silly falsetto voice. Really unimpressed with this album.

I've never heard of The Band. Writing this during the first song, a 5+ minute whine-fest, I wish I'd still never heard of them. Through the third song, this is awful. The vocalist is very bad. I understand why I've never heard of them. OK, song 5, The Weight. I've heard this song. I think it's just one of those songs that has been in movies or something. I don't know, I just know it sounds familiar. I'm through song 8. I am definitely considering some of my life choices. Mistakes were made. OK. Wow. That was painful. 1 star. There is nothing here for me.

Like I said when I reviewed the other Band album on this list, although you cannot doubt their musical ability, I just cannot stand this style of music at all. They were a big thing in my youth but in those days my head was full of Prog Rock and the stuff The Band were producing was pole opposite. Happy to give it a more considered listen nowerdays but it still is a big miss from me. 1.5/5 19/7/24

Boring. Trite. Always thought The Band was overhyped. Even with Dylan involved, I find it so difficult to listen to this. Andre can tell you about the low-key rage I hit when a cover band goes into The Weight.

I thought I would like this album but couldn't weight for it to end. Far to sobby and slowed down folkie for my liking. When it was over, I felt a weight had been lifted. One song on here and the rest just weigh it down.

Especially on a Monday morning, this was quite a slog to get through.

Tears of Rage - vocals are whiny, slower tempo but not in a way I would come back to and listen, it's also too long, we'll see how much I like this album lol To Kingdom Come - I feel like I got transported to the late 60s and not in a fun way In A Station - this is beyond boring, there's no substance - why is this a must listen? Caledonia Mission - Meh, it's at least a little more upbeat sounding, but still somehow slow? WHY? The Weight - This will prob be the only one I know, it's a classic but also just doesn't do it for me We Can Talk - No Long Black Veil - ..... meh Chest Fever - this isn't bad, but still not my style Lonesome Suzie - this is the most boring shit I have ever heard, this is painful The Wheels On Fire - also meh I Shall Be Released - honestly only thing going for it is that I know the album is almost over Overall I'd never seek this out again. Too boring, slow, folk rock with little interesting substance to make it worth listening to.

Trust underpins all human relationships. We trust family to have our backs, we trust chefs to not poison us, we trust shopkeepers to not fleece us. We pick up on subtle cues when we come across those who might not seem quite as they are: a gripped hand, a twitchy gaze, a too sincere tone. Our hackles are fallible though; many a friendly chump can end up unfairly overlooked. But I do not like the look of The Band's jib. The songs are overwrought, the singing overdramatic, the tempo troppo lento. The emotions displayed feel as original as the band's name. A pervasive sense of faux-ness obscures my judgement of them. But maybe those emotions are true to The Band. Maybe the songs do need to be as wrought, the singing as dramatic, the tempo so lento. "What else can we do?" plead The Band at the end of Lonesome Suzie. "I do not know," I answer rhetorically, as I slowly walk away, collars popped, throwing backward glances.

You’d need to be in the right mood to listen to this. If you ever see me in that mood, please shoot me. Just awful. Never heard of this before and now I hope I can quickly unhear it.

This was without a doubt one of the hardest albums to get through so far. There's something about it that was making me irrationally angry.

To Kingdom Come borderline unlistenable. By track 4 I'm trying to white knuckle my way through the rest of this. Sorry, couldn't do it. Bailed at track 7.

Ugh. I struggled with this. There is an organ and all the singing sounds whiny. The Weight is the song that is most well known and even with that it needed to end. At times it felt like Randy Newman was singing. It is probably better than a one but I will round down.

Hard to believe this is from 1968. Not because it's ahead of its time... but because it sounds like where boomer music went to die after many decades of ossification. It's pleasant enough in the background, like the closing credit music to a passable family film. But good lord it's the most boring album I've heard for a long while. "The Weight" is a song I've heard previously, and that's easily the highlight to the album. In fact, it's the only track where anything interesting or compelling happens. The rest feels like tired old country-rock tropes played with muscle memory alone. Most of the lyrics have a slight "olde worlde" air with some cliches about the rambling outlaw figure. Zzzzzzzz. 1*

I didn't enjoy this album at all. Couldn't wait for it to be over. All the tracks seemed to be the same sound and very vanilla/boring.
