Always underrated

Enjoyed more than I expected

amazing cover, the music is also great

I’ve had this downloaded for about a month now, ever since I generated their self titled album, so at last I finally gave it a listen and I really enjoyed it. It didn’t blow me away like The Band did but it’s still a great album that I’ll be going back to. Top Track - The Weight

The Weight alone is 4 stars. Good old Americana, folky music.

A classic for a reason. Completely chill & laid back vibes with nice songwriting and pleasant music to go with it. Can't go wrong here. 4

Solid classic rock.

I listened to this album on the train, and I think that is a perfect way to enjoy it. My mom used to always play “The Weight” when I was a kid, and listening to that one really made me feel emotional and nostalgic this time around. Best Track: The Weight

I see the appeal and I understand why this would be influential. After backing Dylan, the attention was on them to make a good record for their debut. This certainly is a good record. The organ really drives the sound and they blend country, folk and rock with.. well, pretty much everything else. It is a very good record.

Easy to listen to, jam rock with great vocals. The Weight is a classic that can’t be skipped, it sounds like a much needed breath out.

This record is a baseball game won using small-ball. No home runs, (although Weight is definitely a stand up triple) everybody is at least 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run of their own. The Band wins, final score 16-5. 4.3 outta 5

I love The Band, but I guess I'm more into the singles. Rick Danko's bass playing was legendary. He had an approach to the bass that made it sound more like a tuba than an electric bass, which added so much depth to The Band's music. Liked Songs Added: The Weight Chest Fever I Shall Be Released

Love this album… faves are: - The Weight - Long Dark Veil - I Shall be Released Classic.

What a debut album.

this album feels so comforting in such a particular way

Good stuff.

I like Dylan's versions better.

Highlight songs: Tears of Rage To Kingdom Come Caledonia Mission The Weight We Can Talk Chest Fever I Shall Be Released

3.5, pretty good

Day 4: Best tracks: The Weight, Chest Fever, Tears Of Rage, I Shall Be Released A classic that spawned a decade of tunes capped by The Last Waltz. I've always preferred The Band in this more unrefined sound. 8/10.

неплохой

Love it.

God I love The Band. One might say I’m The Fan.

Good stuff, especially ‘Long Black Veil’ and ‘This Wheel’s On Fire’. If it sounded less like Bob Dylan it would be a 5… 4.5

Very interesting mix in this album. Largely folksy blues, but there are some heavy influences of country, rock, soul, and just a hint of psychedelic. Solid album and great outing from The Band.

This was one of my those “put it on and have it play in the background” kind of albums. Solid, but definitely dated.

ok but they actually ate…. what the hellyante

I thoroughly enjoyed this one! you can definitely see the foundations of a lot of musical overlap being laid, with the rock/jazz/funk combo.

The Weight is such a classic

Pre: the band is great, big pink has something to do with Dylan? Post: compilation? Great stuff

This album is so good

Here's an album that really feels ahead of its time. It's got such a variety and such a melt of so many different styles. Good album through and through.

Well produced, easy listening

The band is so good. And some really classic songs. The weight never gets old. And I shall be released. Chef’s kiss.

I must listen again

9/10 record

Très belle découverte! Une fusion de blues et de prog très solide. Si vous aimez le genre, je recommande Cressida!

A great album with so many cool styles coming through, psych, prog, hard rock and blues it was awesome, I felt like I should have known it and when the weight came on I was so happy

Loved the album. They seemed to just be jamming along, very laid back, organic sound. Great stuff

This is a fantastic classic rock album that I wasn't very familiar with previously. I think with more time this one might become a 5/5 favourite for me, along the likes of Layla, and early Neil Young.

Solid this

Não conhecia. Gostei!

interesting

Gostei tanto! Entrei mesmo no mood porque não conhecia de todo!

top to bottom really solid with some different sounds in there as well. Glad to hear something out of the 60's that doesn't sound like everything else, good chill listening

Not every song is great, but the great songs count double.

Album 14/1001 Listening to this superb album on a cloudy London afternoon has me Americana dreamin' - not of the America of today though sadly... The Weight is one of the greatest songs ever...like, top 10 great. The fact that RR was influenced by Buñuel in the writing of it only adds to it's allure... "Buñuel did so many films on the impossibility of sainthood. People trying to be good in ‘Viridiana’ and ‘Nazarin’, people trying to do their thing. In ‘The Weight’ it’s the same thing. People like Buñuel would make films that had these religious connotations to them but it wasn’t necessarily a religious meaning. In Buñuel there were these people trying to be good and it’s impossible to be good. In ‘The Weight’ it was this very simple thing. Someone says, ‘Listen, would you do me this favour? When you get there will you say “hello” to somebody or will you give somebody this or will you pick up one of these for me? Oh? You’re going to Nazareth, that’s where the Martin guitar factory is. Do me a favour when you’re there.’ This is what it’s all about. So the guy goes and one thing leads to another and it’s like ‘Holy Shit, what’s this turned into? I’ve only come here to say “hello” for somebody and I’ve got myself in this incredible predicament.’ It was very Buñuelish to me at the time. ~ Robbie Robertson Favourite lyrics: THE WEIGHT "I pulled into Nazareth Was feelin’ about half past dead I just need some place where I can lay my head ‘Hey, Mister can you tell me where a man might find a bed?’ He just grinned and shook my hand And ‘no’ was all he said." "I picked up my bag, I went lookin' for a place to hide" CHEST FEVER ""She's stoned" said the Swede, and the moon calf agreed" Favourite song: The Weight 🏋‍♂️ Honourable mention: Tears of Rage 💧😡 This Wheel's on Fire ⚙️🔥 Chest Fever🩺🌡 Long Black Veil 👰 🖤⚰️ I Shall Be Released 🛐

This is a band - well the band - I used to think that I loved in my early 20s and was worried that it would sound super boring, so was pleasantly surprised that it was almost as good as I made them out to be in the old days. My roommate at the time was a manager at Blockbuster and got a free DVD player (this being 1999, this was a big deal) and The Last Waltz was an early release. Felt like I was in a movie theater watching it on a 27 inch 4:3 TV.

Love this stuff. Not a 5 from me but I think it would be from many people.

When I read that the Band was a rock band, I was not expecting the album to have soul elements in it. They sound very American. Nice harmonies

Insgesamt, aber insbesondere wegen The Weight Hammer!

I like it!

Long time favorite of mine. It seems like a different song jumps out at me each time I listen, and this time is was "Chest Fever". As of January of this year RIP to the entire band, Garth, Robbie, Levon, Rick & Richard. Thanks for the music. (9.6) ★★★★½

Some tracks tickle me pink - The Weight and This Wheel’s On Fire are absolutely top class, the former up there as one of the best singles of the decade. Some tracks tickle me ragefully teary - like Tears Of Rage. A couple of tracks are kind of snoozers though and just tickle me asleep - like Long Black Veil. Chest Fever has such almightily boss, almost heavy metal organ riffing even though the middle 8 kinda gets cobwebby and awry before getting back on track. The album sleeve by Bob Dylan is extremely cool by the way thanks to the elephant and is probably his best ever contribution to any kind of art form. Solid 4.5

nice album to listen to

Favorites: The Weight, Chest Fever, The Wheel's On Fire I want to issue a formal apology to The Band, I was not familiar with their game. Being completely honest, I came into this album with low expectations for... quite a silly reason really. I thought a band that couldn't come up with a more creative name than "The Band" wouldn't be able to make good music, but I was proven wrong thankfully. I don't think there's a weak spot on this album, and it really holds up to this day. Now that I think about it, The Band isn't even a bad band name, it's quite a bold move and they deserve to hold that moniker. 8/10

i just can't refuse her

good, would listen to it again.

Classic album from one of the great bands of all time. "The Weight" is an absolute all-timer. "Chest Fever" is one of my favorites (though I prefer it on their live albums). "I Shall Be Released" is an excellent closer. I will say that there are quite a few filler tracks, which keep it from 5-star status, for me.

Just easy listening here, nothing stood out but none of it was bad. 3.5/5

I’m a The Band fan. This album is a little uneven but there are several classics on here.

Never heard of them before but very enjoyable experience and worth another listen at some point.

Obviously prefer the self titled album over this one, but still classic Americana

Easily listenable hymnals to fall asleep to that are elevated by The Weight.

Best with Dylan

This was pretty good, a bit generic, but good nonetheless

I wasn't overly enamoured with The Band's brown album but much prefer this one. There's clearly so much experimentation going on here and the result is a record that feels full of ideas and energy. I still don't understand how it was *as* influential as it apparently was, but it's an interesting album with a lot of depth that I will happily return to.

The Weight. Hough.

This was a fun listen! Cool to hear take a load off in context

Easy listening, groovy tuneeeesss

This is one of the all time most important and influential albums. It inspired so many things, from recording at home, to basically being the foundation to Americana, alt-country and indie. All this from four unassuming Canadians and one American. I like all of the songs but boy oh boy Chest Fever rocks. My only crtiticism is that I’ve heard this so many times and it’s become a little stale.

- idk what i was expecting for a band called “the band,” but the start caught me a bit off guard. - it’s giving bob dylan and eric clapton’s lovechild - now it’s giving the who a little bit - i looooveee caledonia mission - this album feels perfect for road trippin - ok chest feverrrr i see youuu - ok so apparently this album inspired Eric Clapton and then he left cream lol - this wheel’s on fire gives cream for sureee - ok so apparently the band backed bob dylan on tour lol - i think this album has really good first and last songs. they fit their role perfectly. - loved this album. can def see how other artists were inspired by the band.

I never heard of this band before, so this is all new to me. On the first song I was happy to have a more Americana, country, Blues sort of sound as that is my vibe. I mostly really enjoyed it, some tracks I found a bit boring but mostly I was bopping my head along and enjoying myself. Would listen again. Also, Dylan’s artwork is shite. Songs I loved: To kingdom Come, The weight, We Can Talk, I Shall Be Released When it finished my phone automatically started playing Ophelia by The Band and that was really good, I suggest listening to that if you enjoyed this album.

Enjoyable album, was surprised to see how much I liked it!

The Band rocks. Just a great folky, rustic sound to them.

Listened in the car coming back from a road trip so not as close a listen as I would like, but this is truly the ultimate Americana album. Some great songs here that are almost hymn-like in their majesty. A stellar mix of rock, traditional, and gospel that few bands could have pulled off.

Good music. Odd lyrics, only one song really stood out. The one we all know

Its pretty good but I don't find it all that exciting. Most tracks are enjoyable, not really grabbed by many moments beyond the tracks I already knew, The Weight and I Shall Be Released. 3.7/5

Some interesting sounds in this, the sort of music you put on, grab a whiskey and enjoy in your man cave when you want to actually pay attention to the music

Det va fint, og første gangen æ har hørt «The Weight» i sin opprinnelige kontekst. Positivt innstilt.

So much heart and soul in every song.

Such a solid album. Could listen to The Weight all day long

Very nice album, was only familiar with a couple of songs on here. Would listen again

The Weight is worth a four, the rest is decent as well

Really beautiful, still sounds unique and fresh all these years later.

Fantastic mellow vibes off of this record. Something about this really gets me feeling really good. Lot of the organ, love the tone, love the vocals. Strong elements of blues embedded throughout this. Beautiful album.

Great!

Fricken beautiful, I did not know of these lot and ,my days i missed out on some beautful sounds. one that genuinely is nice... 3.5

pretty good for the background, jazzy fun vibes

This is one of those albums where I know loads of the songs but not who it was by. Great combination of genres. I shall be released is fantastic but I think I’ve only heard the Dylan version. I think I like this one more. Would listen again.

Some absolute classics here. The rest is a bit too twangy for me, but good songs are good songs.

I don’t know if I was just in a bad mood last time I got their other album, but I liked this quite a lot and can’t remember why I gave the other one a one-star review.

not my taste but still comfortable to listen.

Banger They were better with dylan but the weight goes so hard

Put a load in my Fanny, put a load in for free, put a load in my Fanny, and and and, you put the load right in me!

It sounded like a mix of some type of southern rock, but mixed with Bob Dylan and The Beatles at the same time. In fact, the opening track, called Tears of Rage, is written by Bob Dylan. The song is definitely a 5/5 stars!! This album is really cool, since it came out in July of 1968, but it sounds like a later 1970’s album. The Band was beyond their time. Very cool record.

Is the band a boy band? Like do they fall into that classification? I think this album is exactly what an album by The Band should sound like, the weight rules. Everything else, since I'm not familiar except maybe one listen ten years ago, is really just exactly how I thought it'd go. We Can Talk is the first stand out for me other than the weight, loved the guitar tone and it was very fun. This Wheel's on Fire also got a save, loved the keys and energy on that one. I Shall Be Released is also phenomenal, I don't see myself going back to listen to it often but I really enjoyed the emotion of it. Feeling a steady 4.

Obviously super strong album. Feel good and throw back music. Great composition. I wouldn't say that I'm the biggest The Band fan, but this album is a classic. 4 from me.

Really good album.

I love “The Band” and this an excellent representation of them. Definitely will re-listen again. Multiple songs from this album will be add to my favorite Playlist.

STARTED KINDA SLOW, ENDED GREAT

Very chill

Good. Souldful

Muy buen disco de música country.

This is a constant in the house. Spiritual gold. We play it a lot in the fall and winter when the fire is going. Funny thing is we have it on vinyl, and it's one of those copies that you have to play at 45rpm instead of 33 (for higher fidelity), and whenever I put on another album, I always forget to take the player off 45 rpm and the next record sounds like the Chipmunks for a good 30 seconds or so before any of us figure it out.

Turns out I actually did listen to this and forgot to log it on here! RYM tells me I gave it 4*!

Good vibe, would listen again

This is what the 60s sounded like. No one can convince me otherwise. I've listened to this album a few times and yet I found myself surprised by how funky it is. I listened to this on my commute home from work, and it made the traffic all the more bearable.

I really love this album after the past few days. But it did take a few days to grow on me. The instrumentations are stellar and the harmonies are super clean. I didn’t love it right away cause I thought it was alittle slow and it kind of was a lot to digest in one sitting. But I’m glad I gave it time cause it really won me over by the end. Definitely worth checking out if you want to see the very bedrock foundation of psychedelic rock even if it’s alittle watered down compared to what we have today.

Good listen, one or two familiar songs

The birth of Americana, taking rock, blues, folk, R&B, soul, country, and swirling it all together in a pot. Everyone comes together and gets their chance to shine, nothing is wasted. "Tears Of Rage" and "The Weight" stand out, but don't sleep on "Caledonia Mission" and "This Wheels On Fire"

Really enjoyed this album, will definitely listen again. Loved the storytelling and the chill vibes. Fav song: The Weight - also loved I Shall Be Released and Long Black Veil Least fav: To Kingdom Come

This was a very fun album, with the iconic The Weight. A little one dimensional but still bouncy and fun.

'Now you look out the window tell me / What do you see? / I see a golden calf pointing / Back at me.' The Band, at bottom, is gospel-rock, tho they may be completely secular for all I know. It has more to do with their lyrics, which center on the philosophical and parabolic, and their sermonic vocal style and instrumentation. Formed in Toronto, they sure feel like they hail from Modoc, Arkansas ('Caledonia Mission'). Unlike John Fogerty, keening for the unfortunate sons, The Band, organ-driven, proffers an adventure in unconscious religiosity. Their songs are not exactly catchy, tho everyone knows 'The Weight.' More accurately, they grab hold of you, as any deft preacher would. A bit uneven, but mostly an excellent, sui generis affair.

Really good shit. Not as transcendent as I was led to believe. It's in a lane all its own and pretty much everything would sound better live, I figure.

Loved, and a very different “I Shall be Released” than I remember. A very good listen.

It’s good, I can see this being someone’s favorite album.

Whoa ! the Band! Great love this band. But I would not say this is my favorite albums of theirs so sorry 4* I will make it up with Stagefright/Brown album though.

This album works to back up my claim of Dylan songs almost always being better as covers compared to his originals. The album is clearly carried by "The Weight" which is fine because it is a fantastic song. The rest of the album is good, but pales in comparison to that song. Overall still a great album!

Enjoyed

Never heard of this before its a gem

Liker det her!

Clearly a lot of skill at work here but I got bored.

Their best

Couple of standouts you'll immediately recognise on this one - especially if you like Absolutely Fabulous. It's one of those 70's rock albums like CSNY or Lynard or that kinda thing. Enjoyed it.

gooood

Really enjoyable album, though the production on some of those tracks does sound a bit outdated. Highlights: Chest Fever, The Weight, To Kingdom Come 4 stars

A must.but i prefer the follow up

Finds top. Das andere self-titled Album aber ggf. noch einen Tacken besser.

Buen disco con el organo ahi siempre presente, todo remite a dylan, imposible separar

Buen disco, parejo, no dura tanto y suena bien. No me volvio loco pero es un gran album y para la epoca, muy rescatable.

Folksy, blues-y rock. 'The Weight' is on this album, which is such a classic.

Pretty enjoyable. Obviously the weight stands out here.

The second half is so good but the first half I can never connect with for whatever reason. I relate to Christgau's feeling that he admires the album but from a distance. Still though its influence can be heard all over, even if a lot of the bands that were really inspired by it aren't my favorites either. Rating: 4.0

7.5/10 Liked this. Nice vibes, sounded very real. Country rock, not as blues influenced as I might have expected. More soul if snugging. Best: To Kingdom Come

I was pleasantly surprised by this album, I hadn't heard of The Band before. I enjoyed the album as a whole, there was a mixture of genres which they did so well and I really liked. I'll be revisiting some of the tracks again I'm sure.

A really solid album. I can tell it influenced a lot of bands.

Chest Fever would have been their second hit wonder, I suppose. Being from the 60's I understand the general vibe and understand why it's had staying power. It's good but I'm probably just spoiled by modern trappings of music

Garth Hudson ties this together to make this what it is, iconic! And while we can point to Crosby, Still, Nash for their delightful harmonies, the Band should be noted for their peculiarly distinct and outstanding vocal combinations.

• If you’re looking for sloppy harmonies, you’ve come to the right place. • “Tears of Rage” is one of my favorite album openers. • I don’t much care for Richard Manuel as a lead vocalist. Should’ve had Helm do it all. Standouts: “Tears of Rage”, “The Weight”, “Chest Fever”

I came to the Band late in life, via Dylan. It took me a long time to figure out why people cared about this boozy, seemingly careless style of country romp. But at some point it clicked I guess. There’s nothing careless at all in a Band record. They were sounding exactly how they wanted, and were massively talented front to back. Besides a couple snoozers this album is just about perfect. Chest Fever always does unspeakable things to me. The Weight is a stone cold classic even though I don’t need to ever hear it again.

Sound like the invention of Americana, doesn't it? It's perhaps a bit too warbly and woozy at times, as if they're playing almost too hard at authenticity. Hits are great but for both "The Weight" and "I Shall Be Released" there are better versions.

A little disjointed as an album which would normally drop it to a 3 but I love The Weight so that bumps it up for me

8/10 Highlights: Tears Of Rage The Weight Chest Fever I Shall Be Released

I love all of the popular songs form The Band, but never listened to any of their albums all the way through. Honestly, I expected a lot more from the album, but it was still an enjoyable listen. 7/10

The Band that I never knew that I knew. Recognized several tracks on this album including a few from them that Spotify decided to play after. Folksy, Relaxing, and surprisingly enjoyable.

incredibell.

Lots of good music

1968 The Band feeling country, folky rock and building into the 70's. The Weight being the biggest hit. Diverse sounding and influential.

A nice chill vibe! Reminded me of lifeguarding at Clifton in 2020. Nostalgia bonus point

Has the feeling of nostalgia without me actually having heard most of the songs before. Favourite: Long Black Veil (or The Weight)

1. Tears of Rage - light 8 2. To Kingdom Come - decent 7 3. In a Station - lite 8 4. Caledonia Mission - lite 7 5. The Weight - lite 9 6. We Can Talk - lite 8 7. Long Black Veil - decent 8 8. Long Black Veil - NOTE RATINGS ARE FROM A FIRST LISTEN - SCORE - 7.8/10

Wonderful album of country-influenced classic rock. "The Weight" is one of my favorite songs. A lot of the music is easy-going, some of it is sad and melancholy. All of it is beautifully played and heartfelt. 4.5

It’s a classic.

Had to listen to it twice to make an opinion Some really awesome sounds and arrangements I’m a huge fan of alt county and hear this band influencing a lot of bands I enjoy.

听多了 有点疲劳了

This album was much wilder than I had anticipated given this generic band name. 'The Band' certainly carved out a unique sound for themselves in the late '60s country-rock scene, a sound infused with a seemingly endless amount of sounds from other genres. The songs here feel almost intangible - the biggest challenge for me here was getting over just how *off* everything sounded. It's all over the place melodically and lyrically. I enjoyed the stability of a song like 'The Weight' with its classic folk structure, quaint biblical-imagery-laced story, and actual repetition. I feel the same about 'Long Black Veil', which goes in a more country direction, although its story is much darker. The whole thing has a very Rootsy/Bluesy undertone to it but, at times, like with the synthetic production on 'In A Station' or the strange psychedelic backing of 'This Wheel's On Fire', the band sounds almost '80s and somewhat proto-new wave...which was pretty cool. Many cool little production moments here, most have to do with the keys or synth. I especially love the sharp organ tone of 'Chest Fever', the organ on this record is generally enjoyable, but this track particularly does a great job at spotlighting just how full it can sound. I'm admittedly confused by this album, it was disorienting, kind of unsettling, and puzzling but in a very subtle way. The vocals, instruments, and chord structures were all relatively standard for the genre, but just how they were arranged here threw me off. Still, this was a cool experience, I can always appreciate a band going off the rails in these otherwise very traditional-leaning genres.

3.7 Bunch of very good tracks. Richard Manual is sure trying to hit the high notes on the tracks he is signing on, eh

This is a great folk rock album. Rooted in blues and country but also rocks hard. Great songs, great singers, great players that weave in and out of jams. This is just great. Lead guitar on This Wheel’s on Fire is simply delectable.

Fantastic classic album. The Weight is just an amazing classic.

Topalbum van een top 'band'. The Weight is één van m'n favoriete nummers, maar dit album is in zijn geheel ook echt best goed. 4.3

не мое, но вроде неплохо 4/5 Обложка пиздатая.

Some classic songs, some experimental sounds. Very talented group with their vocals and varied styles. Fun album.

Der er noget Beatlesque over det. Lidt som om nogen har fået McCartneys kasserede idéer og indspillet dem.

Maybe not quite the classic that it's often made out to be. But definitely a very enjoyable record. The Dylan(-co-)penned songs plus the The Weight are the obvious highlights for me. Anyone else getting strong Deep Purple vibes from the intro to Chest fever?

freakin' sweet!

Enjoyed more than I expected but could take it or leave it

Nice, a bit Bruce Springsteen-ey in the vocals, and I liked the Americana parts being mixed into some RnB.

4/5 This is a well crafted record here by the Band. I feel like this is music dads would love but I don't think you can go wrong at all putting this on your turntable and cranking the volume up loud. I enjoyed this on first listen and will certainly be revisiting it. Classic stuff here ladies and gentlemen.

A classic album from arguably the founders of Americana as we have come to know it. The album is a dense, deceptively complex production. Skilled musicians melding multiple genres. The voices of the (four) vocalists - slightly strange but at once familiar, weaving sinuous harmonies against acoustic and electric textures. Garth Hudson’s organ adornments integrate with country guitar, mandolin and assorted folk instruments. The live feel of the songs’ elastic time signatures always locked-in to a groove. Their influence can be heard on many an alt-country artist record (Wilco springs to mind) and other works, notably George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. Song arrangements manage to be both epic and intimate - Soulful vocals over rich, organic instrumental parts. Stand out tracks for me - obvious one ‘The Weight’ but also ‘Ghost Fever’.

Pretty freakin good. Forgot how influential The Band was.

Classic album. Interestingly enough, some of these songs have a funky vibe.

So many classics in here. "The Weight" was number one on my local radio station's annual big listener voter countdown for two consecutive years, and I think as far as popular classic rock tunes that's a pretty cool pick.

Solid album

Day 10: Music From Big Pink - The Band. Music From Big Pink is a relaxing album that incorporates elements of country, folk, rock, and several other genres. It's a pleasant album that features a lot of harmonies, organ, and piano. Overall, it's a treat that would be very difficult to hate. This album mainly reminds me of Traffic and the Grateful Dead. It feels very specific for its time period (the late 1960's), but still has a nostalgic feel that makes it enjoyable for somebody like me, who was only born several decades after its release. To not beat around the bush, The Weight is a standout track. That song used to be an ear-worm for me, until I randomly stumbled upon the entire song, and learned its name, as well as the band that recorded (The Band, har har). Something about that song just hits all the right spots in my mind. I obsessed over that song for around one week. Personal Enjoyment: 4/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 4/5.

Vários gêneros diferentes com algumas pérolas muito boas. Vi um review falando que era mais uma reunião de músicas do que um álbum e acho que tenho que concordar.

I'd only ever really listened to one track. Needs more listens. You can see why Martin Scorsese loved them.

Folky. Loved it!

I've been on a major Bob Dylan kick lately and having The Band pop up on this feed just synergies really well with that. It's a great album by a great group with a terrible name.

I don't know who the singer is but I love his voice. So soulful. I would call this album quintessentially American but it turns out they're from Canada. Favorites: Tears of Rage, The Weight

Awesome. So many songs I had no idea were from The Band.

Had already listened to this album, and I enjoyed it. The Weight is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Favorite Track: The Weight

I’m not as much of a fan of the slower songs but the more uptempo ones more than make up for it. The weight itself would carry the album.

I only got like 3 songs in but i will definitely be revisiting this album

Great vibez. Gospel/ folk/ R&B classics. Good slow vibez.

Hell yeah. Aside from the atrocious Bob Dylan cover art.

Very nice. Great album.

A classic, maybe a little overrated?

I feel like this album is a vessel to get you to "The Weight." The rest of the songs are fine, but aren't anything you need to revisit, but track 5 on it's own pulls this album to a 4.

Good stuff, classic Rock.

Great great album. It had everything I wanted. I listened multiple times.

i listened to this on a dark rainy sunday evening on the hi-fi which i think is the best way to hear this album. very cozy and warm feeling. makes me want to smoke a joint fav songs: tears of rage, long black veil, i shall be released

Lead singer has some soul in his voice, it’s a good combination with the country mood of the whole album. I’d listen again, I feel like this could very well be an album in the late 80s yet it was released in the 60s.

Banger. Really good jams.

It was fine and all but not much to it. The best song on here was Tears Of Rage the worst was Long Black Veil.

Aunque no sea de mi estilo, es un buen album y tiene varios tipos de generos.

3.5 it was good not sure about lyrics

Knew the album already via the weight

Hey now, this is pretty good. The Band's got a sort of country-party-blues sound – it's bright, positive, and laden with overlapping organs, guitars, and vocals. There's also a lot of variation in sound and texture (though the "thick-texture" ones are numerous) throughout the album, meaning the listener stays fairly engaged. The songs are a good length and none of them feel too dragged out. (Albums with too many "epics" are a peeve of mine, with very few exceptions – such as Pink Floyd's Animals.) Additionally, The Band's sound is surprisingly complex for the 60s, and also manages to separate itself from its "Bob Dylan phase". You can definitely hear Dylan's influence, but it's not overwhelming. The main thing holding this album back from 5 stars is that there weren't many "wow" moments. Sure, there's a nice rush listening to the blockbuster vocal hooks on The Weight, the lush organ notes that open Chest Fever, or the quasi-angelic singing on the closer I Shall Be Released. But these "highs" aren't that high. Absent are solos, transitions, or tight instrumentation (for the most part). In addition, the record doesn't provide a particular cohesive "album experience", even if it's a darn solid album. When I think of The Weight, I don't think, "Ah, that great song partway through Music From Big Pink!" And we're judging albums here, not average song quality. 4/5 Key tracks: Tears Of Rage, The Weight, Chest Fever, I Shall Be Released

Classic: Highlights - Hearing Manuel's voice for the first time in "Tears of Rage", the organ sound on Chest Fever and the free-falling feeling of "rolling down the rooooooad..."

Nice, The Band, zemmegsetzt us de Mitglieder Leander Leadsinger, Daniel Drummer, Balthasar Bassist und Gilroy Guitarist, wo mit ihrem Lied The Song uf ihrem Debutalbum The Album, wo sie serst mal uf ihrere Tournee The Tour im Lokal The Place gspielt hend, berüehmt worde sind. Defür sinds au grad mit The Price uszeichnet worde, gratulation! Zerst mal chapeau, dass es bis 1968 gange isch, bis sich e band "The Band" gnännt het und denn no erfolgriich worde isch. Zweitens au chapeau für The Music woni no gar ned kennt und sehr gnosse han. Actually not a bad album, it was pretty nice as a background listen. I have to be honest - the album artwork did not make me feel very confident about this whole experience but the music was actually pretty good. I would say maybe 3.5 stars but sure, let's round it up to 4.

Fun and interesting album. Obviously the Weight is an iconic track. Quite enjoyed.

I like this, listened to it a couple of times but not my favorite. I’d give it 3.5 stars if I could I think. Seems to be a pretty heavy album lyric wise, with more traditional, late 60s “hippie” type Americana, despite them being Canadian. Which isn’t always my favorite genre.

Its a classic of communal folk rock - not my vibe is the only reason its not a 5.

Nice warm album

Didn’t pay much attention at first but wow this is warm and lovely. Top tracks: the weight, long black veil, we can talk, chest fever for the organ solo!

Good melodies and harmonies. Very tight. Great mix of influences from different genres. Will be in regular rotation and will look to purchase.

This is a "classic", but I don't think it's as good as The Brown Album. It's their first CD, and it just lacks that polish that they'd later develop. The Band's strength is their diversity of sound. They've got three different lead singers, all with very different voices, wonderful vocal harmonies from basically everyone in the band except Garth, and in addition to their regular instruments, each of them plays a handful of random museum pieces (more than a handful in Garth's case). They can really mix it up in terms of musical dynamics too - when they're firing on all cylinders, as on "Caledonia Mission", they're incredible. Between verse and chorus they essentially swap out every instrument, the lead singer (there's so much backing on the chorus that it's unclear who is "lead"), and the entire vibe of the song. With each passing verse or chorus they insert a new instrument to enhance the color, whether it's fiddle, organ, or (the novelty!) electric guitar. And they make all that really work. Everyone knows "The Weight", and that really shows off the depth of vocal talent they've got. But truly the secret weapon on this CD, and the guy who just makes every good song except "The Weight", is Garth, he straight crushes some totally unique parts on "Chest Fever" and "We Can Talk". I've never really understood Robinson's reputation as a strong guitar player, fact of the matter is the guy barely does anything. But Garth totally makes up for it, leaping between registers for as close as the band gets to Organ Hero moments. I listened to this a couple times and really the only thing I don't like about it is "Tears of Rage". It's an awful way to start - very slow, fairly long, and very sad - which is pretty much the opposite of the typical opener (the contrast with, among others, "Across the Great Divide" is quite stark). They could've subbed in a number of other songs from this CD, like say the next song in sequence ("To Kingdom Come"), or even a couple from Basement Tapes. Then the mix on that song on the trombone is just way, way off, as if the trombonist were attempting to deliberately sabotage the song. The whole thing is just confusing. There's some weaker material towards the end as well ("Long Black Veil" and "Lonesome Suzie"), but mostly they find their footing after the first track.

The Band is amazingly talented and they have a great sound. This album also features on of the greatest songs of all time - The Weight. Overall, the album is very good, but for me, some of the songs are a bit forgettable.

The Weight is a great song, and I found myself enjoying this entire album. I really enjoyed the instrumentation. Got to love organ in rock music.

Such a great album. Can almost give it a 5 just for The Weight alone.

Not perfect but a great album with some gems.

Even the briefest biographies of the band 'THE BAND' cannot overlook their origins as the Hawks, Bob Dylan's backing band. For most groups, emerging from the shadow of such a towering figure in music and pop culture would seem nearly impossible. Just consider Crazy Horse's enduring association with Neil Young, despite their body of work apart from him. Yet, the band 'THE BAND' brilliantly transcended this challenge with Music From Big Pink, a great debut that masterfully blends rock, folk, country, and soul, enriched by their harmonious vocals. Dylan's influence on Music From Big Pink is undeniable; he co-wrote three tracks: "Tears of Rage," "I Shall Be Released," and "This Wheel's on Fire." He also painted the surprisingly captivating album cover, further intertwining his legacy with theirs. However, the band 'THE BAND' manages to carve out their own identity. The album opens with "Tears of Rage," a poignant track that establishes a reflective mood with its emotive lyrics, featuring Richard Manuel's soulful lead vocals complemented by the rich harmonies of the band 'THE BAND'. Following this is "I Shall Be Released," where Manuel's expressive voice shines again, paired with Robbie Robertson’s lyrical guitar work and Garth Hudson’s evocative organ, creating a powerful sense of longing and freedom that highlights the band 'THE BAND'’s collaborative spirit. "This Wheel's on Fire" injects urgency with its dynamic arrangement and compelling lyrics, showcasing the interplay of Hudson’s organ and Robertson’s guitar, deepening the album's narrative. Standout tracks include "To Kingdom Come," which showcases the band 'THE BAND'’s energetic rock-oriented sound. Helm’s driving drumming, coupled with Danko’s bass, forms a solid backbone for this track, which blends rock, gospel, and folk with cryptic lyrics about sin and judgment. "In a Station" reveals the band 'THE BAND'’s dreamlike side, featuring Manuel’s haunting vocals against a hazy, psychedelic backdrop, further enriched by Hudson’s atmospheric keyboard work, adding layers to the overall narrative. The album’s pinnacle, and arguably the best track in the band 'THE BAND'’s discography, is Robbie Robertson's "The Weight." This iconic song features cryptic lyrics and a warm, steady groove anchored by Levon Helm’s drumming. Robertson’s guitar work seamlessly weaves throughout the arrangement, while Hudson’s soulful organ adds depth to the instrumentation. The interplay between Danko’s bass and Helm’s drums creates a solid foundation, allowing the band 'THE BAND''s harmonies to shine. Music From Big Pink is often credited with kickstarting the Americana and roots rock genres, steering music away from the excesses of psychedelic rock toward a more authentic sound. the band 'THE BAND''s ability to ground their music in rootsy Americana has inspired countless artists in folk, country rock, and Southern rock. This album not only marks the band 'THE BAND'’s emergence from Dylan's shadow but also establishes them as a band capable of crafting unforgettable, genre-blending songs filled with rich narratives and emotional depth. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? Yes Would this release make my personal list? the band 'THE BAND' would go on to perfect their sound on the follow-up self-titled album. If push comes to shove I would probably select that one first. Will I be listening to it again? I have immense respect for several of the leading artists of the late '60s, and the band 'THE BAND' are arguably one of the top proponents of the era.

What a great album. There’s a warmth and looseness to the sound that permeates the whole record. There are some all-time classics on this album.

Sometimes I notice the number of plays on albums. It may prejudice my judgment. "The Weight" on YouTube music has over 115 million plays. The next most-listened track has less than 2 million. Is the Weight THAT much better than the others? No, we all know popularity doesn't correlate to quality so neatly. ... But "The Weight" is definitely the best song on this album.

I thought this was a really solid album; favorite song being "The Weight". Can't say that I fell in love with it the way others did, but I do respect The Band's musicianship, just not really my style 7/10.

I did rather like this! :) Musicianship was top-notch, and I think I preferred it to the other album - this felt a bit more "focused" and it didn't feel quite so sprawling.

Oooh, c’est vraiment bien ça, je le garde dans ma collection

Really lovely!

Classic Americana folky rock.

Embarrassed to admit did not know a ton about The Band. Obviously everyone know The Weight. I can see now why they incfluenced so many others - such a great combo of southern rock, blues, 60’s feel, etc. so glad to hear this one!

One of Canada's finest.

Qué himno The Weight

Enjoying this album. Will return to listen further. Album art has great composition and interest. Loved finding out it's a Bob Dylan painting. The Weight was a cult classic at college in the arts community. Never knew who sang it until now.

I have really only heard "The Weight" by The Band before this (also contender for worst band name ever). Tears of rage was a really good opening for the album. Really dug the harmonies and general feel of the album. "The Weight" is as always a very good song. The rest of the album was a nice listen. I also only knew "This wheel is on fire" by Bob Dylan and didn't have a clue that a member of The Band helped write it. Settling on a weak 4 star. While not the whole album is great I think there is enough good songs that a 3 seems a bit harsh.

With a name like 'The Band', I really expected this to be a lot more up it's own ass than it was. I was only familiar with Weight & Long Black Veil (covered by other artists) before this and seeing the folk/psychedelic genre tags had me feeling like this might not be up my alley similar to a previous album covered on the list. But this surprisingly won me over as it went along. I enjoyed the more psychedelic rock tracks here than the folk ones, not to say those are bad by any means though. On that note, while they have their own distinct sound, I liked that there was some separation between the country/folk music and the rock tracks. Rather than just merging them together for a whole album. Highlights: To Kingdom Come, This Wheels on Fire, I Shall Be Released, The Weight

The Weight - really solid and catchy track, bass and guitars doing wonderful things. Liked the lyrics a lot. Chest fever - quite enjoyed, liked the central progression and instrumentation Not a fan of a few vocal performances throughout, I found it a bit grating at times. The instrument work was consistently good however. I’m a fan of the live jam quality that many of these tracks have.

Heard of The Band. First song sounds like Ray Charles singing.

Solid album, no dull moments

Very classic 70's.

I love their messy, drunken, bluesy ways. Ignoring any polish, they march through songs that are funny and heartfelt, while demonstrating a knack for finding grooves. I always thought “Big Pink” was a movie I hadn’t seen. I now know that it was a house where a lot of cool people hung out to make some cool music. Oh to be a fly on the wall.

Pretty chill vibes and some good tracks in there.

Hard not to like an album that features The Weight. Though it's not my favorite album of theirs it's a pretty strong leadoff.

I've never felt the urge to dig into The Band's discography, but I know people revere them. My only background comes from The Weight, which is a fine enough song that is incredibly singable and messy in the best of senses. Any time it plays it evokes the feeling that I'm having friends over who I haven't seen in a long time. Tears of Rage is a soulful opener that takes its time. Can certainly feel Dylan's influence here. Love the distorted guitar + thrumbing bass. The composition on Caledonia Mission is fantastic. Nothing feels rushed -- that's a prevailing theme here -- but they do a great job of playing with the tempo between more hopping and more drawn-out sections. Everything sounds great here. Chest Fever is familiar sounding. Unsure if I've actually heard it before or just its reverberations on other songs. Either way, its is a jam. I Shall Be Released is a great closer for this album -- slow and peaceful progression with some pretty piano melody plinking in the background supported by some echoed reverberations of some variety. Just a really nice end of party song that puts a nice bow on the whole thing. This album really grew on me with repeated listens. There is something therapeutic in the pacing of it. For me this falls in a mid-high 4 territory. Lot of good ones on here lately

Great album. The weight is obviously a banger. The Band is general is an easy classic rock listen. 4 stars for me.

Love this. Definitely moments where I was thinking 5, but I think the ending just fell a little too low for me. Loved the variety with some classic folkiness, some electronics, some ragtime-esque sounds. Plenty of depth with a couple of hits too. Great stuff.

This album had some real good stuff on it besides the Weight, which is an obvious classic. Chest Fever stood out to me and sounded wildly different than the rest. Great album.

The review

surprisingly, "chest fever" is the only non-starter for me on the whole album. i dunno how it's possible for an album to feel like a warm hug, especially with such simple instrumentation, but somehow the Band do it. it makes you wanna take to the guitar and write a few things. plus, don't lie to yourself -- it's fun to sing like Robbie Robertson on "The Weight". we've all done it once or twice.

in theory i should like this but something about it made me really miserable i cant really place why it took me so long to get through this entire thing. fav tracks are the last 3 probably i wanna grow old and marry someone and listen to this song on snowy mornings on winter vacations w our kid in the backseat. this is so beautiful i cant wait to be an old man and finally grow an appreciation for this type of music

If the Muppet Band were people. But I happen to love the Muppet Band.

Another one that's perhaps too familiar for me to be objective. This has always been a solid choice for me: the rootsy combo of country, blues, and folk is pulled off perfectly; the original tracks are great little pieces; the covers bring out new dimensions of the originals. The album is greater than the sum of its parts (perhaps fittingly for a group that started as Dylan's backing band): it's more a mood than a collection of individual songs. It's a perfect example of its kind. For me personally, it's not an album that obtrudes in my thoughts much, nor one I'd necessarily think of when identifying my favourite albums of all time. I wouldn't necessarily put it on first; instead, it's one of those that I'd see when leafing through my collection to pick the next one to put on, and think "of course, that's the perfect one!" and be very happy with my choice. It's been dipping in and out of my life for the last twenty years - and I'm sure it'll be with me for the next twenty and beyond.

Quintessential dad rock. Nothing wrong with that. Got some great hits on this old thing

classic.

I love this album a lot. The Band will always be very special to me as it reminds me of my dad. For fucks sake, if I were a boy he would have named me Levon (after Levon Helm obviously). This album is the perfect mix of folk, rock, blues, and country.

Not a huge fan of the Band, but this album has a great feel that can't be denied. I'm struck it came out as early as it did - ahead of its time 3-4 years in terms of its sound. I also love it when rock n roll bands start an album with a ballad. It's perverse and I love it. Can also hear how other bands I love were influenced by this - for example, play Steely Dan's "Pearl of the Quarter" immediately after "In a Station" and you'll know what I mean. Also, this album kicked off the whole concept of a "band house," a musical collaboration and production style these guys pioneered, as well as a slacker lifestyle that served many quite well.

I actually got this album a long time ago, before being part of a listening group, and gave it 4 stars, so it's nice to get a good album again, even if I'm kicking myself for not leaving any notes to myself on that first listen. "The weight" seems to get the most attention on this album, and well-deserved, but what I liked the most about the album has how consistent and solid the band is on the entire album; I can definitely see how this album sounded incredibly fresh and different in the midst of acid/psychedelic rock. In addition to "The weight", I particularly enjoyed "Caledonia mission", "We can talk", and "Chest fever". And pretty wild that they had to convince Levon Helm to come off oil rigs to come to Woodstock to sing and play with them.

Ist es der mehrstimmige und wundervollen Gesang? Die eigenwillige Produktion? Die wunderbaren Songs? die Mithilfe von Bob Dylan? Ich hab's von vorne bis hinten genossen. Besonders angetan haben es mir die Songs: "In a Station", "WE can Talk", "Long black viel","Chest Fever" und "I shall bei released"

The Band rarely disappoints. 3.9

Awesome awesome awesome. Deserves more listens.

Definitely a slow starter for me. I gave it three listens, and by the third, I came to appreciate much of the album.

Shades of The Grateful Dead and Traffic. I'd not heard any of this save The Weight. Liked but didn't love.

Extra star because The Weight is an all time classic jam

Starts out slow then brings out all the stars!

Still holds up well today

Dylan knew what he was doing when he put together these dudes.

pretty great songwriting tbh! i love the groovy instrumentals i fw this heavy

its peam

This is the second album by The Band that I’ve been handed here, and I have to say I liked it much better than the other one. The first one was fine, but I didn’t feel like it could be their best work and bordered on corny at times. This one felt more authentic and fresh. They’ve always had a specific sound that sits somewhere between folk, country, blues, and even a little rock. It’s a sound that I feel doesn’t commit to anything too definitely, which allows the music to come across somewhat unassumingly. It’s a bunch of dude playing music about characters they’ve created, stories they’ve written or things they’ve seen. The name of the band could be seen as pretentious (“we’re THE band”), but I don’t think that’s meant to be it. I think it’s meant to just convey that they’re simply a band. The music is simple in arrangement but so very effective in conveying the emotions of the songs. My one gripe is probably the vocals. From what I can tell there’s two singers. One is the guy who sings the opening line of “The Weight” (all time great song), the other is the guy who sings the verse about Chester. Chester guy…he doesn’t need to sing. Not in love with his voice at all. But that doesn’t define this album, nor does it detract enough from it to make it an average piece. No, this gets four stars. Great stuff. Standout Tracks: To Kingdom Come, Caledonia Mission, The Weight, This Wheel’s on Fire

8.5/10. This is a fun album. The Weight is a great song! :)

Decent album with one huge hit. Enjoyable listening experience

It took until "The Weight" before I could place this voice and band. I thought they were some kind of supergroup at first, and while they are pretty good, the members weren't really all that established elsewhere. For these 60s-70s kind of rock groups I really dig the various keyboard instruments. They really add a nice later of sound beyond just guitars and drums, and this album has at least 3 different key instruments from what I can tell. Multiple vocalists is also something I'm a pretty big fan of. I'm not sure the Band and Mushroomhead have been compared, but those elements are a big part of why i think both bands are interesting amongst their peers. At least a couple of tracks here will make a playlist for me, and that counts as a good to great album for me. Favorite track "The Weight" 4/5

Solid album. Great tunes. Eminently listenable.

I was definitely familiar with The Weight but not really any of these other songs. The songs are full of soul and the production is raw. It's crazy that they can be Bob Dylan's backing band but make a record that doesn't sound like they're Bob Dylan's backing band. This is a solid record.

I love this album and I love this band. I can honestly say that The Weight changed my life. It's one of my favorite songs. This record was always hard for me to find. I first heard The Weight and I just wanted more of The Band, especially as a Bob Dylan fan. I somehow came across The Last Dance, think at the South Jordan City Library. Its a live album and was harder for me to get into at first, but it had all of the songs I like, so that I went with a long time. When I listen to Song from Big Pink, I'm almost now just wishing I was listening to The Last Dance. Something about the live production, the guest musicians, the energy of the recording. But I guess this review is about Songs from Big Pink. I love this album too. The Weight, obviously. Tears of Rage, Caledonia Wind are all great songs. My favorites though are still Long Black Veil and I Shall Be Released. I know they're covers, but they're just so damn good. What a band.

I love The Band and this album is fantastic, including one of the GOAT songs, "The Weight".

Great harmonies and lyrics.

organs and soul easy beats, beatles the weight - most popular song (take a load off annie)

Drape this album over me like a warm blanket.

Another great album from 1968! I'm very sure that magical things happened this year. The last years of the 60s are at odds with everything that exists when we talk about music, and here it couldn't be any different.

Classic album, easy listening. The weight is a classic.

I like the lead singer's voice. Kind of an odd choice for track #1 - not a banger or a bop, as the kids say - but overall an interesting album and rather undefinable in terms of genre.

Some really great songs; a few less enjoyable ones. This is a classic for sure.

Fun! rly no thoughts but it had its highs. 8/10

This album kicks ass. Lots to like here. Amazing they made this coming off of backing Bob Dylan, as I find him fairly boring. Chest Fever is a jam. So close to a 5 for me. Just a song or two away. 4.5
