Reviews (page 7 of 12)

Some songs were a bit slow for me, others had a good vibe and told a story which I liked. It’s not my usual taste but it’s a nice listen 3 Stars 10th Of January

Not bad, not great - I really like the instrumentals in this one but did not like the lyrics in a lot of the songs. Good smokin on the back porch kind of music

This isn’t really my usual style but I’m appreciating it artistically. Very pleasant listen. The more upbeat songs are much more up my alley for sure. I also really like the vocals! Also didn’t realize beforehand that I knew The Weight, but I’ve definitely heard that one a lot. Favorites: To Kingdom Come, Chest Fever (holy shit the intro to this one)

Some absolutely amazing original songs but sung atrociously. I've given it a 3 to acknowledge that its probably because im not American. Like when all the Americans heard The Streets and thought "wtf?!"

While it doesn't set itself apart too much from other folky 60s music, I did enjoy my listen and have saved some of the songs. It was nice and I don't have a lot more to say about it.

3/5 Solid 60's album, but I feel like it doesn't really set itself apart from other 60's bands. I wish the sound was a bit more original, but otherwise it's fine.

This one's a pretty nostalgic record for me as it was one of my dad's favorites and I remember listening a lot to it as a kid. Nostalgia aside I think it's just ok overall. The Weight is a classic, but the rest of the album doesn't do much to really keep me interested. Probably something to come back to, albeit infrequently. 3/5

Mostly didn't care for this. There's a few songs that are decent. It's funny to see how many more plays The Weight has over the others. It is like in the realm of 100x more listens. Chest Fever is a good song too. It was interesting to learn about their origin as Bob Dylan's backing band. I definitely didn't know that. 2.5/5

It's some acceptable folk style dad rock. The Weight is a fitting name as it pulls the majority of the noteworthy weight in this album and is probably the only reason it's on this list.

Big Pink = the house in Woodstock they rented. Album was a watershed moment in rock music as it was the turn from psychedelic rock back to basics, back to roots & songs from the American Songbook. Rebelling against rebellion. Country Rock. A little too boring and samesy for me personally.

Very interesting mix of rock and jazz and blues? No song really stood out. Will need to listen again to fully form an opinion

goede start maar ging steeds beetje downhill, eerste liedje was wel fave tho

Three stars, it was fine.

Okay... I love this genre. The vibes is so chill. Fave song: the weight

Not really my funk

Music From Big Pink is a remarkably assured debut from The Band, and one that immediately stands out for its breadth and confidence. The album blends country, rock, folk, blues, R&B and soul with an ease that feels completely natural rather than showy. There’s a sense that this band already knew exactly who they were from the outset. Reading up on the background only deepens the appreciation. I hadn’t realised quite how closely connected they were to Bob Dylan before this record, touring as his backing band and co-writing three of the songs here. His influence is unmistakable throughout, not just in the songwriting but in the album’s loose, rootsy feel and understated confidence. What really works for me is the variety. Music From Big Pink is an enjoyable, rewarding listen with several standout tracks, and it’s an album I can see myself returning to. It’s also made me keen to dig further into the band’s back catalogue, which feels like a strong endorsement for any debut. Favourite tracks: There are many excellent tracks. This Wheel’s on Fire is a standout, though I can’t help wondering if I slightly prefer the Absolutely Fabulous cover. To Kingdom Come, Long Black Veil and We Can Talk were also real highlights. Least favourite tracks: The album does start on a slightly dull note for me. Tears of Rage is a slog, and some of the slower songs elsewhere struggle to hold my attention. Album artwork: A beautiful cover, painted by Bob Dylan himself. It perfectly suits the feel of the record and adds to its timeless, rustic charm.

Shrugs. This is just kinda right smack dab in the middle. They're excellent musicians, no doubt about it. Their singing voices are hit & miss, like most of the songs. The Weight is fantastic, as well Chest Fever. Wheels on Fire starts out ok & gets better. Some songs I found to be too similar to each other or just plain dull. I found Black Veil Women to be quite creepy. Just good rather than great. Almost a perfect 3 star album, if there is such a thing.

A rootsy album that pleased instrumentally throughout.

345/1089 - It's okay. Don't like the guys voice very much. Organ is cool sometimes, I liked Chest Fever. This has been a pretty weak week on the generator for me. Hopefully I get something more exciting like War or Violator soon.

pretty good but lowkey could not help yawning????

Not my favorite

Tolerable and old, I pay it no mind, you probably shouldn't either

If I could give this negative stars I would

pretty good! i never listen to the band but i liked it

Album is pretty well constructed. I don't know that I'll come back to it, though. There was one of two nice songs and nothing I actively disliked.

It was good but not great. But 3 stars for AbFab theme song alone. 😀

Definitely a good record. 8

čista solidna trojka. ništa posebno dobro ni loše. uhu niti smeta niti štajaznam koliko godi. raznovrsnost, koju neki ističu kao manu, meni je prije pozitivna strana

It was okay. The guitar work on this was awesome.

It was good

Buenos clásicos con buena onda. Me gusta como para relajarme.

Not my favorite from The Band but definitely a good record

not bad…songs blended together though

It was alright enjoyed it might listen again

Kurante saker. Litt tynt til tider. Kommer dog neppe til å få et innfall om å sette på dette av egen maskin.

12/15/2025: I didn't listen super closely to this one. It was fine, a little boring sometimes. Face songs are The Weight and Chest Fever. 6/10

Amazing tracks. Sometimes a bit boring.

Not bad

Favorite Songs: Chest Fever, I Shall Be Released Least Favorite Song: Lonesome Suzie This feels so deeply American and folky that you can imagine my shock when I found out these guys were from Canada. The piano in this absolutely rocks!

Long Black Veil was a standout song for me. Otherwise, not my favorite, but an overall fine listen.

Alt, nichts Spezielles.

Big pink is light without the weight.

This is an amazing first album. The Weight is honestly one of the best songs from this era. This album is also proof that Bob Dylan should just do art work instead of singing.

5.0/10

I liked it fine, but I didn't find it compelling. 1968, i bet this rocked then and I didn’t give it a fair chance.

Some songs are pretty good, but the album overall feels bland. Is it famous because of its ties to Bob Dylan?

it's alright - easy listening while working. Probably wouldn't listen to it again.

I knew about this album from quite a young age. And, yep, I knew The Weight because of a crappy Weezer cover some years ago. It sounds like Tom Petty and Neil Youngs voices were combined together, played with 60s sensibilities and religious overtones. I didn't really care for it, nothing offensive, but not my cup of tea. 3 stars.

This album just sounds like you’re telling your friend about how your girlfriend dumped you last weekend. You’re sad, you’re angry at her, and you’re not really sure where to go from here.

Its ok. A bit bland it parts. But it also has the track The Weight which is a lil rippa.

A few memorable hits that make this album a hit!

Sure, The Weight is a classic, but does it hold enough weight for the rest of the album. I enjoyed the parts that were uniquely blending folk and rock and blues differently than most at the time, but Bob Dylan's influence was apparent, especially when I was falling asleep.

pretty good, funky

A generic 60s folk-rock album. It's ok, but nothing incredible. 3/5

One of the albums which was big time influential back in the days but nothing special today

This was fine I guess. Just a mellow listen. Nothing really stands out to me but “The Weight”. That hit is overplayed a little yet still kind of timeless.

I was hoping for some of the songs to be on par with The Weight due to how overplayed it is, but none really presented other than a decent cover of The Long Black Veil. Still, as a singing drummer myself I gotta give props here. Overall just an average listen.

Sounded like what you’d expect if someone said “play me some music from 1968.” The weight is a solid jam. Some good parts throughout but didn’t really grab me and not something I’ll go back to.

Whenever The Band comes up on this list my brain says OH FUCK NO IT'S STEELY DAN!!! And then I remember I am dumb and this band is find. The Weight has obvi been played so much it is kind of annoying. I have a bit of a soft spot for I Shall Be Released. I'm sure peeps geek out on the Dylan connection yada yada, but this is middle of the road decent rock but not something incredible IMO. 3.5/5

Little bit more folky than what I’m used to listening to, but it’s not bad. Not sure if I’ll come back to it anytime soon, but I enjoyed it a bit for what it is.

Hard to give any album that has The Weight under 3 stars but nothing else here. Only version of I shall be released that I don’t like.

Ok so i thing The Weight is quite a cool arm-in-arm drunken hillbilly song but i discovered Chest Fever which i quite liked. So these two saved the album which i would probably not listen to again.

This was pretty good. Child background music, especially for writing. 3/5.

Better than expected, nice calm songs, Knew the one that goes take a load off annie

A great band: no pun intended. This is what happens when terrific musicians get together and nobody has to outshine the others. Not every song works well, but it is still a pleasure to listen to the musicianship and arrangement. I'm giving this an extra star simply because of "The Weight".

The Weight is a classic piece of American pie.

Its a classic as far as I know but not my particular cup of tea. Good for backgorund music, for that, its perfect. Chill guitar vibes I remember but nothing special

Very cool and easy to listen to, but not that much more for me.

Favorite songs so far: Tears of Rage, Long Black Veil & I Shall Be Released Thoughts: Pretty good album, I'd give it a 7,5/10 for vibes alone, some clever lyrics but nothing too crazy, wouldn't say it's life-changing but definitely worth the listen

Better than I remember it being. The Weight and Long Black Veil stand out.

Again, too familiar. Sounds stale.

Great album cover, mediocre music.

I enjoyed this! Particularly liked to kingdom come. only knocked off some stars for vocals, but the instrumental is great!

Average band name. Average Band album.

This is pretty good. I know it's real famous and I even own it. Only three stars though if I'm honest (and I am).

Not super interesting

1 absolutely classic song and a few decent ones

Second Band album from the generator. A really sweet record. I didn't like the other one much but this one is actually quite good 3/5

Certainly a band that held their own among the giants of Rock and Roll. A good album.

Not to my taste

This album was fine. It was an easy listen, but nothing really grabbed me.

I like the style of music and I like a lot of the songs...but for some reason I wasn't a massive fan of these versions of these songs. Didn't love the singer's voice and a lot of the songs felt quite slow and laboured.

Music with some gritty soul.

Tears of Rage - 3/5 To Kingdom Come - 4/5 In a Station - 3/5 Caledonia Mission - 4/5 The Weight - 4/5 We Can Talk - 4/5 Long Black Veil - 3/5 Chest Fever - 4/5 Lonesome Suzie - 3/5 This Wheel's on Fire - 3/5 I Shall Be Released - 3/5 Average score: 3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Good listen but it’s manly the weight & chest fever…

The weight is the best out of here. Nothing to griping for me

After listening to this album a second time, I found I appreciated it more. The Weight, is obviously a great track, Caledonia Mission was appealing to me, as was Chest Fever. Pretty good example of the Soft Rock genre and easy to listen to. Other than The Weight, nothing really stood out to me as amazing though.

Did this album warrant a snarky cutting review. Not really. The weight is a jam though, I'm down with that. Certainly not as good as lamb chops and painful ejaculations.

It's 2025 and we are back! Fun fact: All of the members of The Band were so infested with head lice that they spent hours ripping eachother's pubes out whilst drinking whisky and chowing down on crisp butties. They later burned the pubes in a ceremonial bonfire whilst recording this album. If you listen carefully you can hear the squealing of the burning lice on tracks 4, 6 and 7.

The Weight is incredible, all the others are... fine. 2.5/5

This is one of those bands I think I'm supposed to like, but it doesn't do anything for me

Superb album with a fantastic mix of instruments and vocals. You cant go wrong with “The Weight” and “We can Talk”.

Their music and songs were good, a few standouts, although not really my taste.

tears of rage- 5 to kingdom come- 5 in a station- 5 caledonia mission- 5 or 6 the weight- 5 we can talk- 5 long black veil- 5 chest fever- 5 lonesome suzie- 5 this wheels on fire- 5 i shall be released- 5

I find it pretentious to name your band "Band". I do understand there's context to this, but it ages like milk. I was able to appreciate the B side, but that first half was dull. I was preparing a 2 star review. Not that it's that much better when the continuous singles come up, but you start to understand the relevance and why it might be on this list. I'm glad I gave it a listen, I don't want to listen to it again. 2.8/5

This one was fine, but I think I liked The Band’s debut album a lot more. The Big Pink has that same mix of roots rock and Americana vibes, but it doesn’t quite hit with the same energy or charm. It feels more polished, which takes away some of the raw magic that made their first record so great. There are still some solid moments here, though. The musicianship is as tight as ever, and the harmonies are strong. It just lacks that spark that made Music from Big Pink stand out. After a few tracks, it starts to blur together a bit. Not a bad album by any means, just not one that stuck with me. It’s good, but compared to their debut, it feels like a step down.

Enjoyable music form this era, I can vibe with this. It’s a good mix of old music I haven’t heard outside of the weight. I’d give it a 3.5 if I could, it’s good but I wouldn’t go out of my way for most of it again.

Only knew their hits. Lovely songwriting, great mix (love the 60s bass and drums sound), can hear the influence they had in modern bands that emulate this style (like one of my favorites, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros). Can definitely see myself working this into regular listening

I guess this was okay. Now I know who sang "The Weight." Maybe that'll be useful in bar trivia. And "Chest Fever" has a pretry cool organ chord progression to start with that evolves into a kind of groovy organ solo. So, this album had that going for it. Otherwise, not my jam at all.

3/5 - I like Americana-style music, so this gets at least a 3 just for the "must hear it before you die" aspect and influence The Band had on acts to follow. I liked this, and listened to it twice, having never heard it before, but it wasn't a revelation or anything. Solid, laid back American music from the 60s.

Decent rock album of its era. Some of the heavy harmony portions feel like they’re sung by the muppets.

01) Tears of Rage - 7,0 02) To Kingdom Come - 6,5 03) In a Station - 6,5 04) Caledonia Mission - 6,5 05) The Weight - 9,0 06) We Can Talk - 7,0 07) Long Black Veil - 6,5 08) Chest Fever - 7,0 09) Lonesome Suzie - 6,5 10) This Wheel's on Fire - 7,0 11) I Shall Be Released - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,00 (70/100) Current ranking: 409/713

3.7/5 just some classic rock classic track on here didn’t even feel like listening, have listened already

Tunes from West Saugerties, New York.

Kinda boring, but also basically perfect 60’s rock. 2.5/5

I'd describe the sound of this album as ramshackle-inspired, and there was less of the inspired than I was hoping for. I was a bit let down. "The Weight" is a great song and there are a couple of others that are nearly as good, but many other songs feel like a jam session that needed some revisiting before pressing it onto a record.

Good album. Had the feels and sounds of The Doobie Brothers, Boston and The Eagles.

leider nich genug zeit gehabt es kompöett zu hören, aber erster Eindruck ist gut.

This is my second The Band record and I think it's enough for me to conclude they're not really thing. In the same manner as Black Country New Road I just think there's too much going on. For me it all sounds chaotic but not in the wild electric freedom of say a jazz band freestyling, more in a clustered, claustrophobic way that I feel overwhelmed and eventually unengaged. Not bad by any means, just not my thing.

It was whatever. Appreciate that they're from TRONNO though

Classic rock album with lots of recognizable tunes, especially The Weight. Important tunes to know to relate to Boomers!

Familiar with ‘The Weight’ and enjoyed the album as a whole, but no other standouts that would cause me to listen again.

да блин ну одно и то же психоделически акустическое из 60-70 хз

Late 60s folk rock. Debut. Soul and R&B elements. Close collaborators of Dylan. Chll and very middle of the road.

Originally turned it off but revisited and found there were some good boomer tunes in here.

Solid classic rock (shockingly, not mostly American, but sure seems it) with three notable hits.

very chilled music :)

chill one, not so exciting and everything sounds the same. Kinda boring. You can guess the lyrics so fast, not suprising in any way. This album could be in RDR2.

?? "The Wheight" wahrscheinlich noch nie gehört oder doch? ...cooler name c

I love the Band, but this album is hit or miss for me.

# 587 - Music From Big Pink Music From Big Pink - More like big meh. I don’t love it. I don’t hate it. It’s fine. Music from Big Pink is one of those albums that feels more like a collection of tracks than a cohesive whole. There’s no real flow, no momentum—just a handful of great songs surrounded by others that make you wonder if the tape ran too long. There’s undeniable talent here, and some tracks are genuinely impressive. But the excitement fades fast. Nothing catchy enough to pull me back in, and nothing bad enough to rant about. It’s just… there. A yawn wrapped in roots rock. Verdict: A few brilliant moments lost in a haze of filler. Big Pink? More like Big Meh. Best Track (if you must): The Weight – a classic that carries the album’s reputation on its shoulders. Closing thought: If this is what they built in Big Pink, maybe they should’ve downsized.

Nothing about this really stood out this time but still enjoyable

Some classics on here. At least a little bit sonically divergent from what else was coming out at the time.

I enjoyed this much more than I expected, but nothing stuck with me after and I couldn't recall a single song. But I still liked it!

*Like the use of jazz organ and it has some moments with some funky riffs *Just too slow/mid tempo for me to truly enjoy all the way through

Oh Brother. Not this band again. I didn’t like them the first time. 😭 Okay update after I listened: I fear Chest Fever struck a cord for me. I will give them a 3 now lol

i don't love this band (lol) but they have a wide history. Last Waltz is amazing even if you don't know who they are. i didn't know that they went all they back to '68. this is where their big hit comes from, which is great but i don't like it. it has the feel of that late 60's moving further away from the hippy dippy bullshit and being more true to country roots. these guys have a bit of goofy demeanor about their music. it never feels like they take all of this too serious. my parents love this stuff and would listen all the time, its classic backyard music. i will admit that the first half up to the Weight is kinda too mellow, then you get hit with that song you've heard a million times and its like a different record. i do genuinely like Can We Talk. its playful like a jam band with no agenda. is the greatest music in the world? no but its not trying to be better than itself. I recognize a couple of these songs, and had no idea their history with Dylan. 3/5 and i do wish i could say higher.

It’s cool that these guys had the opportunity to just sit around and make music with their friends for so long. That’s really the dream of any musician. Just waking up and making music all day. This is a solid collection of songs, but it is rather sleepy at times. Doesn’t quite stand the test of time other than as an artifact of a time and place.

This is where I feel guilty giving a low score, because realistically it’s a 5 star album, it’s so beautifully composed that there’s nothing I can really fault, other than this doesn’t fit my musical taste and it’s unlikely I’ll listen to it again.

Fun record, country rock jams that have a feel of americana future to them.

It was good, solid rock

Kjekt med gitar og trummer:) Beste sang: We can talk

Good ole classic rock.

This is a classic Americana album from the late 60's - 70's. A mix of country/folk/blues/rock/etc. I'm sure this was influential somehow, but doesn't grab me. Pitchfork: 9.4 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #100 Best Songs The Weight

I like it but I like other KW better

Great songs (for example, the weight), but also a bit repetitive

Thought I’d enjoy it more, still several bangers. Have it in cd somewhere, so must have made an impression in the past.

now i know why they are the band

Undeniably talented group. Probably a pretty amazing album at the time, perfectly fusing so many American traditions so effectively. But also just not music I like. The Weight is a classic but doesn't really do it for me. I think I prefer Chest Fever.

I can’t help thinking that no-one would be so excited about this album if the players were Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band. This is fairly average LoFi music by accomplished musicians, but it’s not that exciting. It does get points for the intimacy captured in the recording, and the quality of the genres covered (except Chest Fever). Despite the funeral organ, it’s just a bit cosy. It’s the album that you put on when it’s cold and dark outside, you’ve got your thick jumper on and a you have big mug of soup warming your two hands.

It’s nice, but background playing for me.

An album that the Dude, Eddie and Patsy can dig. What could be better? Moments of brilliance akin to a spiritual experience are surrounded by good but unremarkable americana. Good but inconsistent.

Decent listen if you’re in the right mood. Like camping. Or a slow drive through country roads.

There’s dad-rock and then there’s dad-rock. I think The Band, aside from sort of evading all the ¨greatest¨ and ¨best of¨ lists of 60s bands, is sort of the platonic ideal of what the dads of my generation must have listened to. Kind of bluesy, more immediate than Pink Floyd, sort of scruffy but overall, inoffensively masculine. Knowing that they were the backing band for Dylan who sort of grew big enough to branch off into their own thing, like a tumor becoming self-aware, makes them more interesting than they would have been otherwise. The music is good, the vocals a bit high but perfect for cracking open a light beer on a fishing trip with the boys. Best songs: ¨Tears of Rage,¨ ¨Caledonia Mission,¨ ¨The Weight¨

The Band always seemed like an artist I should like more than I do. I certainly like adjacent artists (like Bob Dylan) a lot, as well as artists who were clearly influenced by them, but for whatever reason, I'm not that into them. There are individual tracks I think are really cool, but as a whole, I'm kind of indifferent. I think this is a good album, but I don't think it's as great as a lot of other stuff from this era. I've also learned I like Levon Helm a lot better than the other vocalists. Highlights for me are "The Weight", "I Shall Be Released" and "Tears of Rage". 3.5 stars.

Fav songs: the weight, lonesome suzie, we can talk

Some big songs here. Feeling like I missed The Band almost entirely growing up. Love the sound in the right context Chest Fever, The Weight, Long Black Veil were great.

It was okay. I did kind of like it, but it didn’t stand out as one I will listen to again.

actually a decent listen. easy listen too

Love the band!

Music is solid... Vocals are a little whiny for me. Not a bad listen, but unlikely I'd revisit.

Great. Looked forward to listening to this as I generally am a fan of rock bands from this era due to my parents growing up. The Weight is obviously one of the most known songs ever, but I had never listen to a full album from The Band. Will listen again.

Nice and cosy

Not my preferred kind of music, but I enjoyed it! The song writing is really good, and reminds me of Dylan

This is ok country rock. The Band has never really been my thing.

It’s the band so obvs it rocks 7/10 bc it’s not too funky 5/09/25

As everyone said, The Weight is a classic for a reason. 3.5/5

Decent listen, with only The Weight really standing out. - 3/5

I know this is sacrilege. I'm not into this. It's nice, it's okay, but nothing happens. The standout songs are 'The weight', 'Chest fever' and 'This wheel's on fire' (famous as title song for Absolutely Fabulous). But it's rather telling that I have owned this album for fifteen years or so and that I recognized or remember only one song (The weight) from earlier listenings. Boring.

Oh that’s who this singer is!

I started listening and thought I must have heard this before, but I think it is just a kind of pleasant, nondescript classic rock. Good musicians and you see why they are famous as a backing band

The Band: Music From Big Pink: Pretty standard country rock, not awful but not my thing. 5.5/10

Music From Big Pink has a reputation as a hugely influential record, but hearing it now, it can feel more subdued than revolutionary. The mix of roots rock, folk, and country is tasteful and carefully played, with a strong sense of tradition running through it. Songs like “The Weight” show their knack for storytelling and layered harmonies, and the musicianship throughout is subtle but steady, never drawing too much attention to itself. At the same time, the album’s restraint is also its weakness. A lot of the tracks drift by without leaving a strong impression, and the overall mood can feel a little too relaxed to really grab hold. It is easy to admire the craft and the historical importance, but harder to get excited about the whole record from start to finish. Music From Big Pink works best as a document of where rock was heading at the time, rather than as an album that still demands regular revisits.

I think The Weight is a high point that isn't met by the rest of the album.

For a (the) band that considerably influenced Fairport Convention’s Liege & Lief, The Beatles and led to further collaborations with Bob Dylan, it all seems slightly pedestrian. And by now, yes, I’m aware that these sorts of albums seldom grip you fully on the first listen - that’s why their popularity has declined in the age of streaming - it’s not like you have to get your money’s worth out of a record if you’ve got every other one at your fingertips. But perhaps I’m slightly disappointed. There’s none of the Dylanesque angst, and all of the la-dee-da proto-Eagles whimsy with little of the emotion. It seems like they’re having fun, what with the cover alluding to pre-civilised cave paintings and all, so it’s nice in that communal musical sense. I can’t help but feel that I’m not party to that community, though. And none of this is to say that this isn’t a ‘good’ album, I’m just honestly annoyed that I didn’t enjoy it very much, save for Chest Fever’s more on-the-nose musicianship. That’s my unfortunate takeaway: this album is annoyingly too pedestrian for me. That is also just my takeaway from my first listen - so I hope to revisit this and have a better time, perhaps after going through some of the surrounding Band output.

5mentarios

yeah it seems i do not like the band... boring

A fun listen, you can hear the Dylan-esque vibes in almost every track. Hard to pin down genre-wise for better or for worse, but the interesting use of instrumentation keeps it feeling fresh. Seems like the kind of sentimental album that would hold up better after multiple re-listens on a cozy springtime car trip but unfortunately we have 1001 albums to get through. Fav tracks: The Weight, This Wheel's On Fire

3.0 - Ok

Tears of Rage - Quite nice, and a lovely tone setter for the album To Kingdom Come - Great rock 'n' roll sound that sits somewhere between The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. In A Station - A bit more of the same as Tears of Rage, but not quite as good Caledonia Mission - Much better lyrics this time around The Weight - Compositionally, this is easily the best song so far. Every instrument fills it's place perfectly, and the lyrics are great! We Can Talk - Great funky and harder-hitting breakdown Long Black Veil - Return to form, nice and good. This Wheel's On Fire - Good tempo for the song, but largely not too dissimilar from Caledonia Mission I Shall Be Released - A nice little soft rock ballad to close out the album Chest Fever - Great organ intro! Really mainlining The Doors on this one. Lonesome Suzie - Lovely lyrics and vibe, but just a _little_ too familiar.

The first track started out promisingly through carving out a wonderful atmosphere for itself, however it very quickly began to feel a bit laborious and drawn out (a common thread throughout the rest of the album, despite the relatively modest track lengths). The piano arrangements and rumbling bass work are the MVPs here, but something about the vocal style didn't quite do it for me, and the album plods on at a very pedestrian pace which didn't satisfy what I was after today. Nothing egregious here, but I can't see this forming a part of my regular rotation.

Love the sound, but not a lot of songs that really stick out. 3.5/5

Yeah, I'm not too sure what to think of this one. I enjoyed it, but nothing was incredibly memorable (besides Long Black Veil). This one's a solid 3 or a light 4 for me.

Loved the weight already, rest were pretty good too but haven’t finished yet

Rustic folk rock stuff. A bit over represented here but I don’t mind it

Music from Big Pink – The Band (1968) | Roots Rock / Americana | Avg: 6.18 | Favorite Song: “Chest Fever”* Music from Big Pink feels like an album where the mood and influence outweigh the moment-to-moment excitement. There’s a warm, earthy tone that runs through most of the project, and your ratings suggest it peaks in short bursts—most notably with “Chest Fever,” which brings a much-needed shot of energy and color. “The Weight” may be the better-known track, but it’s songs like “Chest Fever” and “I Shall Be Released” that seem to showcase The Band’s knack for blending gospel, rock, and rustic storytelling. Still, much of the album falls within the 5 to 6 range, which suggests a lack of variety. It often feels more like a collection of songs meant for quiet reflection rather than an album that pushes boundaries or grabs your attention. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a foundational roots rock record, but it might not always hit as hard today without the historical context. There’s soul and sincerity here, but also a noticeable drag in pacing that keeps it from reaching its full potential.

It's hard with a 60 year old album to be objective. It sounded like every other album of this genre, which is likely a testament to the influence it had. "The Weight" is definitely a classic tune. I do prefer the original version of Long Black Veil to this one, though. Heck, I prefer the other 3 versions I've heard over it.

As tacky as the name “The Band” is, there’s some good tunes on this album. I even recognized 1 of them which I was surprised by. By the end when things get soft I was kinda done with the album, but since it was wrapping up I was fine with it

6.5/10 Highlight: The Weight

2.8 I'm picturing that meme of that cartoon guy sweating whilst deciding over which of two buttons to press. One is labelled "more generic 60s psychadelic infused pop", the other is "something actually groundbreaking"

This is the least rocky rock album ever. They use an electric harpsichord.. Whatever, it works for them. The whole album is light and fragile and quavery, which is an attempt to portray vulnerability but comes across as weak and non-commital.

3.0 to 3.5 / 5.0 Clearly meant to match a super-specific mood but it's not a mood I connect with personally.

This one was alright, but it didn’t sound as good as their next album. That’s usually the case with debut albums. It’s takes a little time sometimes for a band to develop their sound. Though, I never would have guessed that they were originally just the backup band for Bob Dylan, before taking off on their own. That’s kinda neat. Favorite track: Tears of Rage Other hits: In A Station, We Can Talk, Long Black Veil, Lonesome Suzie, I Shall Be Released

Was hoping to like this more than I did. The Weight should be ranked separately from the rest of the album - it is a solid 5 stars, no question. The rest of this is 2.5-3 stars at best. Too folksy for my liking, nothing really interesting....?

Boring!

classic group with a classic hit "The Weight"! Their name is either really clever and some sort of inside joke or really boring and no one could come up with anything good.

Music From Big Pink by The Band is a laid back, rootsy record that’s uneven at times but there is enough there that makes you want to revisit it.

Nicht ganz meine Musik, aber angenehm anzuhören.

I love me some folk

It’s The Band so it’s listenable. I actually spent most of the time just listening to different versions of Long Black Veil. Johnny Cash is the best one but the original is Lefty Frizzell and it’s worth a listen if you’ve never heard it. Also, embarrassing but, I kinda like the live DMB version too.

It’s solid 60’s album. The Weight is a great song, but I wish Atlantic City was on this one. 3.5 ⭐️

don't get me wrong: this is a really good album. it's obvious there's some insane talent and production going into the tapestry of genres this album weaves together, but i, personally, like more of what came later and what was developed adjacent to twangly, jangly, americana rock. i wish there were more tracks like chest fever. highlights - the weight, chest fever, this wheel's on fire, bob dylan's artwork

A lot of it kind of has a gospel choir sound mixed with a Country/Bluegrass sound. Some other songs sound more like folk music. Pretty cool.

Chill, liked the guitar and piano mix a lot

I love The Last Waltz but I didn’t need the extended studio album here.

I didn’t listen to it. May be later on

Never knew this band was from Canada. The more you know... This band sounds like a fusion of a lot of other similar bands from the same time, but the sum of the parts somehow is less than what the originals they were mimicking were on their own. No bad, but just kinda boring. Just like every scene of every movie that uses The Weight as a backing track.

Alright, 3 or 4 good songs, the rest are alright to listen to within the context of the album but would not warrant re-listening to them individually.

на любителя.

Some good shit, some not so good shit. The Weight is so good though.

Pretty good!

Good but I wanted more

Loved "The Weight" but the rest of the album was kind of forgettable and meh for me.

Nothing here wowed me, but I did have a great time with it. Perfect 3.

Another solid roots-y album from the late 60s/early 70s.

A fairly enjoyable album from the 60s? Crazy! Very fun piano and organ parts on this one, which give it an almost jazzy feel. I had a good time. Standout: Lonesome Suzie

I am not sure how to take this. The best songs are the covers, which have been done reasonably well. its a rock album, but its not that annoying generic 70s style rock, and it had some pleasant instrumentation. I enjoyed listening to the album, but again there was nothing that blew me away. The album ends well. Can't say it made me want to go and discover more about them. it is still slightly better than the standard. so 3.5 stars

Vibey, good for background music, very 70s vibes, great instrumental sound, mom would like

Easy listening, rock clasico.

The weight is a great song. String classic/blues rock album.

This album has its ups and downs. The Weight is worth the price of admission and elevates it slightly above average. The AbFab theme song was a pleasant surprise as well. 3/5 #145

I can understand why they have such a storied reputation, but for the most part this left me flat. The forced falsetto in a few places grated on my ears, and quite a few songs were just dull. That said, The Weight is beautiful, this wheels on fire made me nostalgic, and there's some clearly decent musicianship. Straight ahead 3.

Not bad. "The Weight" is obviously a classic, but I don't have a huge desire to listen to the entire album again.

I only knew The Weight before this. Good Sunday listening.

Hello partner, I am here on orders from Big Pink. They told me I would find you here, amongst the rubble .

5/10 - nice relaxing pop rock from the 60s, I shall be released a particular highlight

Álbum suave e agradável. Moondrop May.

Too chill

A bit of a bundled mess of a debut for The Band - and it's all the better for this. The Weight is majestic. I love the sweeping ambition set out here.

There's some pretty good tracks on here and some seriously heartfelt, passionate song delivery. Tears of Rage and The Weight are obvious highlights.

Typical

I tried to get into this but found it crept into that obscure category of classic rock for me. I don't know why. It isn't bad, as most classic rock, but it ... there is something about it that kind of pushes me away. I suppose, in an overly simplified way, I am just not "into" the genre even if a single or a whole album is pleasant enough. It is probably great and all, just not my scene. (and I don't know why I guess)

Their sound is like a warm hug. So good.

Was an interesting album did not mind but not one I would buy

Some old guy rock with a couple bangers.

I don't care for a lot of the vocal performances on this one, aside from the comradely group chants, but I can appreciate this album as a cultural keystone of the late 60s that I had completely overlooked until now. I'm sure I'd heard The Weight and (covers of) This Wheel's On Fire but never knew their origins. I enjoyed the early synth and electric organ flourishes on a few of the tracks, too.

"The Band" - both very familiar and simultaneously hard to name any of their tracks. Ah yes, the one about dropping my load on Sally, that's right. Surely only on this list for being Dylan adjacent - nothing radically different from any other folky, daydreamy, harmonies, let's listen to at a campfire as the sun goes down 60s vibe.

Well, it has the hit.

My second "The Band" album. I dont consider myself to be a huge The Band fan- their style is a little simplistic / hokey for me. This album has a couple of hits though, including "The Weight". T Overall- pleasant. Not really for me, but good enough

They are legends for a reason unfortunately I am still searching for that reason.

Enjoyed it.

Quite enjoyed this, recognised the song “The Weight”. Pretty varied but cohesive album.

Cool album. Super well produced. Sounds ahead of its time to me.

The Weight just propels this album up my rankings. Does anyone not like that song. Other than that, the album is ok. I really thought it would be full of different versions of The Weight. The album is bluesy, folky and jammy It leaves a person with more to be desired but it’s not terrible. Choice cut: The Weight

The ultimate definition of mid music. Instrumentals were decent vocals were ok, just nothing to write home about. Favourite Song: Chest Fever

14/1001 The Band - Music from Big Pink Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ❎ The most famous of the Band's studio albums and I've always been torn on this. Whilst I appreciate its influences on bands and artists I regularly listen to today, there's a lot on this album that just doesn't work for me. Anything with the falsetto like vocals completely ruins the tracks for me personally. The Weight is still such a good track though.

blends together a bit

I hadn’t heard this before but I felt like I’d heard it before. It was fine

Vibe-driven and honest.

Oh, this is "The Band" who wrote the song "The Weight"? I like that one. This is a pretty chill album. A mash of styles, kind of a chiller CCR. Decent album I could hear on a boat, or at a family picnic, or something. Not really something I'd listen to on the regular, but I'll give it a 3.

The Band: their reputation proceeds them. I've heard of their work backing Bob Dylan, and of course their great song "The Weight." I've always meant to check out more them. Immediately, I'm struck by this soulful Procol Harum-meets-Van Morrison sound that is classic, self-actualized, and comforting in "Tears of Rage." "In A Station" adds some vocal harmonies and solidifies that they are at their best on the ballads. It introduces a sound similar to the more rootsy stylings of the Grateful Dead, which is further evinced with "Caledonia Mission." As tracks go on, I continue to hear snippets of Workingman's Dead, occasionally some WAR in the more groovy sections, and a touch of Jimmy Cliff in "I Shall Be Released." Quality musicianship, and warm, inviting songwriting. Comfort food

Another band that I'm supposed to have warm fuzzies over, but I never got the hype. This is a good album, but it's nothing special.

Again, not really my cup of tea. Whatever happened to synth pop? The computers have taken over my brain and I want my girly pop! Maybe this was a mistake… Also side note: I YouTubed “trippy imagery no sound” and clicked on a 3 hour video while this album was playing. This was of course after I drank a full bottle of Cabernet, smoked between 2-30 bowls, watched Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and 1 episode of Big Brother US 1, so you can clearly see where my mind was at when I decided to put this on. Ok, all that said. There is clearly a lot of talent here. We clearly see some early country and blues influences. In my semi-inebriated state, I learned that The Band were essentially Bob Dylan’s backup band prior to this album’s release. Again, this isn’t my particular taste but I can definitely see an audience for this. I definitely can hear this as an influence of Allman Brothers, Poco, and similar acts/bands of that time period. Okay my instinct was correct! I thought I definitely heard Pink Floyd in this and it turns out they considered this album an influence! Nice, I feel justified. The second half of this album is so far slapping much harder than the first. I can see We Can Talk being played in a “flying car” sequence in a movie. Some of the imagery in this video I’m watching is kinda giving Art Spiegelman Maus….nothing to do with the album….moving on. Ok I’m kinda bored again. The Weight into We Can Talk was the Chromatica II I to 911 of its day. In all seriousness I really liked both of those songs and now I feel like we’re just kinda getting back into the same stuff that I wasn’t into in the beginning. These guys definitely strike me as an awesome live act. Ok. Album’s over. Ok again I see where there’s an audience for this but I’m not in that crowd. There were a few songs I liked but overall the album kinda bored me. Very Dad rock and I haven’t asked but I’m pretty sure my dad listened to this back in the day. Which reminds me, I forgot to call him back….fuck….

Not every song hit, but it did have a decent mix of country, gospel and even a little blues. Particularly liked The Weight, We Can Talk, and Chest Fever.

Based off that first song I thought the whole album was going to be rough, but it got better. Folk isn’t my usual genre, but I had a good time.

Based off that first song I thought the whole album was going to be rough, but it got better. Folk isn’t my usual genre, but I had a good time.

The Weight is a good song. Rest of the album doesn't really live up to it, but is alright.

Easy listening, many different instrument solos throughout the album. A lot slower than what I usually enjoy and actually sent my son to sleep.

Me gustó a secas.

Country/Folk-Rock, 1968 -> 2-3

Good yet forgettable.

There seem to be albums/bands that everyone agrees is amazing, but I wonder if they do it so they can belong. Love comes to mind. Pet Sounds. The Band is almost certainly in that category for me. I just don't get it. They're good, but I don't understand the accolades.

Perfectly serviceable.

We have Led Zeppelin at home

I think the band is fine. Enjoyable, nothing to call home about.

The Weight holds some weight for this album.

Classic 60s jam band sound from The Band. Overall, a good album to relax to on a dreary day. The Weight is the only song that I was familiar with before this listen.

It does a good job of mixing in some prog and acid into a country rock album. The guitar and organ on Chest Fever are classic. It's a good debut, but the singer and vocal mixing has a hard time keeping my attention.

Some songs I really liked, especially Chest Fever

I don’t know. This is a pretty overrated record I’d guess. Doesn’t do anything for me. Take a load off fanny is probably the biggest hit here and I really dislike that song. I know this is Robbie Robertson but I still don’t know what he’s all about. Not sure I care.

Really nice listen.

Starts off as a bit of a slog, but once you hit "The Weight" it's pure vibes from there on out. Of course "this Wheels on fire" is another highlight

# Album Name: Music from the big pink # Artist: The band # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Not bad. Pretty average for most of the album with three good songs. It just lacked something. # Top Tunes: The Weight / Chest fever / I shall be released # Would I listen to it again? Hmmmmm

I liked it a little more this time but still not totally impressed. Favorite track: The Weight 3.5/5

Not overly exciting to me, mid 3-3.5. Some nice moments but nothing that catches me

3/5 decent kind of indie like

It's pretty chill, and I like some of the different instruments they use, but it's a bit boring

Fav: I Shall Be Released Least Fav: In A Station It’s good, but I think that the self-titled album pulls this off better

This is the second album I've gotten by The Band. I thought the other one was a little more varied. This one has a more defined sound, but many of the songs sound the same. The Weight is obviously a hit, and none of the other songs raise to that level IMO. However, it's a solid album. I Shall Be Released kind of stands out as the one howler.

Good background music, not my fave though

Definitely adds psychedelic to 60s folk music. But it's also very drone-y and rather boring. Innovative, but not very interesting.

01/06/2025 Apart from one or two good songs, this was okay.

roots-rock - куда тянутся корни психодела и фолка. мои любимые жанры ))) но в купе звучит лучше чем я думал

круто, я как будто в старой красной американской машине у заправки. вайб присутствует.

album chill pero no me he guardado ninguna

I feel like I should appreciate this album more than I have. Seems like I have heard better covers of these same songs elsewhere. The Long Black Veil cover seemed to be more to be of bar band cover that something more from this group.

Good, with some standouts.

Lovely, gentle music. 3.5 stars.

I like music from this era and The Band is iconic of genre so 3.

Growing up hearing The Weight and Up on Cripple Creek I thought I would enjoy this album a lot more than I did. It moves along very slow. I will probably revisit it at some point to make sure I’m not just in a funky mood. 1001 album worthy: yeah - 85/154

The way rock albums were mastered in the 60s makes them extremely hard to enjoy, to be honest. No matter what the vibe the artists were going for, it all just sounds so recessed and lifeless. And it feels like that the moment the 70s came, everything started to sound fine, for some reason. Off the top of my head, the only technically good-sounding rock album from the 60s I remember is In the Court of the Crimson King, and it came out close to the end of '69. This particular album is fine. Nothing really special, and I forgot all the songs pretty much immediately after listening. Kind of bland but not bad at all, just not very interesting.

Helt ok att ha i bakgrunden

Less of an actual album than it is an extended jam session. Still has some of their greatest songs, but this is a bunch of dudes still figuring out what they’re doing.

6/10…folk rock

This album was lyrically very beautiful. Although the instrumental elements did not resonate with me as much, the powerful lyrics help this album stand out for me.
