Reviews (page 5 of 12)

Great album. Reminds me of Grateful Dead. Or does Grateful Dead remind me of the Band?

A good listen in the car. I liked what I heard will need to listen to it again

A good, soulful album. There seems to be some passion shining through, and the whole band seems to have worked well together, with them all seeming to sing together as well. I do wish it had a bit more variety though.

good album no complaints

pretty repetitive but decently enjoyable. low 7/10

Tears of Rage // The Weight // We Can Talk // Chest Fever //

A melhor canção deste álbum para mim talvez seja a This Wheel's on Fire e a Tears of Rage. Nota: 7/10 Data: 15/06/2024

There something about this album that feels so warm. The songs feel like friends without knowing them. Magical.

Better than I thought. Full of rich arrangements and musicianshio

first album from Dylan's backing band, folk/country/americana, some great tracks

So Americana gets invented in upstate New York in 1968? By Canadians? This is the father and mother of the 70s (and beyond) and we are better for it. (Think Wilco.) (And Neil Young.)

This was my first time hearing this. I'd always seen it on various "best of" lists, but perhaps because of their association with Dylan and/or their Grateful Dead like vocals, I always decided that this was not for me. I was wrong. This is great. Not sure I can go to a full 5 stars on this, but it's definitely a 4. The vocals still irk me on some songs. (Not sure who the culprit is, but it's not Levon.) But the grooves are great—loose at tight at the same time. The arrangements and production are kind of weird and perfect at the same time. That organ sound on Chest Fever is absolutely killer. Wheel's On Fire: I knew this was a Dylan song, but until today the only versions I'd ever heard were the closing credits for Absolutely Fabulous and the Siouxies and the Banshees version. This one isn't my favorite, but it was still cool to hear. And as for The Weight: It's so weird hearing a song that's so familiar on an album of tunes I'd never heard before. No wonder this became the hit, it's so obviously commercial. Sounds like it came from another planet. Anyway, this may grow to a 5 with enough listens.

very chill

3.75 I feel like I should rate it higher just because of who makes up THE BAND.... but, it's just ok for me.

A cool earlier rock folk kind of album. There’s a lot of fun to be had. Did not get sold until the middle of the album, but I found my listen to be endearing. Thought the storytelling was pretty good too. Looking at it now as I’m writing this before bed, however, I don’t remember what I had listened to without going back to the songs. Standouts: The Weight, We Can Talk, Long Black Veil, Chest Fever, Lonesome Suzie, and I Shall Be Released.

Very 70s. Overall good, but tears of Rage and the weight stand out.

Classic. 4

I've often heard over the radio one or two songs by The Band, but until now I have not listened to a whole album of theirs. I'm thankful to this list for giving me the opportunity to fill in the blanks.

“The Basement Tapes” is one of my favorite albums of all time. It is my favorite Dylan album by far. So, I should love this album. And I do like it. But I feel like Robert Christgau, who said he admired this album from a distance. I’ve listened to enough shitty psychedelic drivel through this project that I can imagine what a breath of fresh air this was when it came out in ‘68. But I think that outside of that context, this album is just decent folksy Americana roots rock. It gets extra points for having essentially invented folksy Americana roots rock, but you know, what have you done for me lately?

Never got into The Band until my mid 40s, better late than never - truly a classic.

peak classic folk rock

Never heard this before but really enjoyed! 4.5

The Weight and Long Back Veil are both great. The rest is good 60's rock. Feels pretty laid back and easy going. Music for lounging more than activities, but I would definitely throw it on for sitting on a dock on a hot day.

Very enjoyable. It really FEELS like the 60s

It's not the type of thing I go to by myself, BUT...the weight

lures you into a great album with great lyrics. some songs are a bit too slow, but very easy to listen to

A timeless classic that still holds up. Bolstered by iconic songs like The Weight and I Shall be released, the whole album encapsulates the pioneering sound of a titan.

The Weight Album

It's great. Not much more I can say really, a warm, rich sound.

Favourite song - Chest fever

take a load off tommy...

Liked it a lot!

The Band are good musicians and they make good music. This is a very good album. It saddens me that, k knowing this, I’ve never been able to get into them. They just don’t seem to do it for me. But at least I can recognize their ability. I’m going with 4/5 because I feel that’s what they deserve, not because of my own level of enjoyment.

relaxing . nice

Lot of classics on this album, The Wheel's On Fire is my personal favorite - it reminds me of Ab Fab.

Decent

Really liked this

Really great. Perfect for the day.

Some pretty decent rock n roll

A pretty down-to-earth folk rock record that has some nice tracks on it, such as "Tears of Rage" and "The Weight." In retrospect there isn't anything that makes it really standout to its contemporaries, but its a good listen overall.

For being essentially Bob Dylan's backing band during the late 60s, these are some killer tunes. Love the organ bits on Chest Fever, specifically.

This album is proof to me that I've gone soft whennit comes to music. That, or I've broadened my horizons when it comes to the medium, but I'd be surprised something like that happened so quickly. I say that because I used to quite dislike this album, and as recently as Autumn of 2023, I still didn't get the Band. However, this listen I found myself quite enjoying this. Sure, its got a lot of dull moments, especially in the middle of the album, but it has a feeling of amateur, fireside music with some true passion behind the music, and I found a lot of the songs sticking with me more than I would have ever expected it to. Its repetitive tonally, I don't think all the hits are zingers, and I still totally see why I disliked this only half a year ago, but there was just something nice about this go around. Perhaps that's the power of a good set of headphones, or maybe I'm getting soft suddenly, but I enioyed this. I'm actually quite happy about that, as I've always enjoyed Bob Dylan's artwork as the cover, so I was sad all that time that this didn't live up to the hype for me. Still just an alright album, but I'll say I'm certainly pleasantly surprised. Suppose that should tell you to check in with the music you don't like every now and then, you may just change your mind.

I love some of it, I could leave some of it, and some of it is better covered in later years. It warrants multiple listens. It isn't fully polished, and it is ultimately a somewhat uneven collection of songs across a variety of styles, but its place in musical history can't be overstated.

I feel like I’m just not a slow rock or easy rock or whatever this is girl. I get soooo bored.

Oh boy, another album with ties to Bob Dylan. Look. I like Bob Dylan, but I feel as though I've gotten too many albums recently that are either from Bob Dylan himself, similar to Bob Dylan in a noticeable way, or, in the case of this album, directly tied to Bob Dylan. Also, before I talk about the album itself, I just want to say that "The Band" might be one of the worst band names I've ever heard. It's just super pretentious. Fortunately, despite my complaints, this album definitely isn't bad. Despite the ties to Bob Dylan, this album doesn't really feel like an album of his. There are aspects that are reminiscent of his work such as the songwriting at times, but this album manages to stand out as something original and not riding off of another artist's popularity and style. There's a good genre mix in here, with aspects of rock, country, and r&b showing all throughout. The sound is solid, with singing that compliments the writing. The writing is quite good. Overall, this album definitely has the impact and quality that an album needs to be included on this list, even if it's not my personal favorite album ever. Light 4/5.

Not the best of band Almost too soulful blues rock The Weight is the great

Really really good Would like to give it a few more listens But I'll give it the benefit of the doubt with a 4

Really just freakishly talented musicians who have a knack for portraying raw emotion and combining it with musical phrasing that really cuts to the heart. I could always use more Levon, but the availability of multiple talented singers presents that dilemma. Lovely lovely music.

Prima, beetje langzaam. Misschien wil ik dit nog een keertje terug luisteren op een chille zondag of in het zonnetje

Mooi radio 2 top 2000 album. Helemaal niet slecht.

Leuk album, goeie vibe, genoten hoor iets nieuws ontdekt

The Band nice Lekker wat rust na die van gisteren The Weight is all time classic

"The Weight" is a classic, and I dig the cover art. This album is what I picture every dad who was a teenager or in their 20s in the late 60s/early 70s adoring (and for good reason). Maybe not the greatest album ever, but it holds up well.

Solid, archetypal classic rock - this is the sort of thing I do the project for - to fill me in on parts of the boomer canon that have otherwise passed me by. Fave tracks - "Weight" is obviously the big one here - a classic track, and the only one I knew going in (unless you count knowing "This Wheel's on Fire" from the cover version used as the AbFab theme tune! 😆) "Chest Fever" and "I Shall Be Released" were also stand outs. Weird that the start of the album seemed so unremarkable, they usually front load some strong tracks...

Incredible song "The weight"

I knew The Band was Canadian, and I had heard The Weight several times, but I didn’t know they had backed Bob Dylan. I don’t have a solid opinion on Dylan so I’m not sure what to do with that information at the moment. Some say the slow, muddy, bluesy sound is a reason to dislike this album. Your mileage may vary I suppose. Some people also expect bands to not sound like themselves so that’s why opinions exist. This sound suits them, and it was a good listen.

feeling generous

mega lækker faktisk. Mindede mig om at jeg skal have set The Last Waltz

Pisse arrogant bandnavn, jeg er vild med det. Synes den her plade er virkelig god, men obs et par af de her numre lyder bedre på The Basement Tapes

This was really good. Really good. I hadn't expected to enjoy it quite so much. Soulful and folksy.

Solid classics

Lacking a bit of cohesion as an album, but a decent collection of songs and a good slice of Americana.

The Weight

Good songs! All of the like slow country rock 3/4****

Liked the chill vibes - good driving music.

Influential stuff. Enjoyed it.

This is a really strong record. It’s deceptively loose when in reality it’s weekly well crafted in terms of the musicianship, recording, and songwriting.

This was a fun listen. The Weight is still a great song.

I enjoyed listening to most of this, though there were one or two songs that the vocals made me cringe a little. But I can ignore that since the rest of the album is so strong. The Weight is one that's just fun to listen to and sing along with.

Bit too slow for my taste (at the start I was checking if Spotify somehow had a feature that slows down the bpm) but undeniably good.

I'm giving this 4 stars because "The Weight" was a song I remember listening to with my dad on a dump run in his old shitty truck and this was a weird throwback I didnt expect. Great sound

Thoughts before listening: I love the Band and this album is one of their best along with their self titled. This will be classic song after classic song so I'm sure I'll add a bunch to the playlist. Review: This album starts slower than I was expecting, but from "The Weight" on it's about as classic of list of songs as you will ever hear. "Long Black Veil", "Chest Fever", and "I Shall Be Released" are great, but my favorite of the bunch is "This Wheels On Fire". 4-stars from me cause I just don't love the first half of the album.

My kinda music

Classic

Love these guys

Not my favorite sound, but they do it well.

The problem with this album, I think, is that the influence Music From Big Pink had on the people who followed it has been so effectively filtered into the general cultural conversation, that it’s difficult to see just what was special about it in the first place. Listening 50 years later, this sounds like a good dozen or so slightly Country, slightly Folky Indie bands who I listen to on a regular basis. And the thing is I understand that this is exactly why this album is on this list, it’s influence on basically every subsequent Rock band trying to be sincere and rootsy rather than psychedelic and ironic. But unlike other groups, such as The Beatles or The Velvet Underground, I don’t think there are the elements that are so hard to replicate that the only place to get them is the originals. The USP is rootsyness, it’s the melancholy sincerity. It isn’t anything to do specifically with the music or the songwriting. All this does is create this weird sensation when listening, because I know this is the original, this is the one all of those other bands copy, but because of all of the copying it ends up sounding so archetypal that it’s slightly underwhelming. I liked Music From Big Pink fine. Actually, I liked it quite a bit, and I will probably find myself coming back to it. But I can’t quite shake the feeling that I’ve heard this one before. Mr. The Band, I know this isn’t your fault. You had no idea that legions of Indie kids would jack your style 30 years after the fact. If anything it goes to prove just how good you were. But it does slightly water down your legacy, which is unfortunate. Anyway, as a consolation, have four stars. That’s more than I gave my first Beatles record

It's always a good day to listen to The Band.

Thought this would be an easy 5, I mean, the weight alone would make this a 3 star album, but honestly I prefer dylans original basement tapes versions better than these. Love him but there's too much danko falsetto on here. Not my favorite by the band but still a classic.

i shall be released

For 1968, The Band was pretty progressive. The music is still relevant.

Out of all the possible band names these guys could’ve picked I have no idea how they settled on just “the band”. Great album though

folksy, bluesy, americana, rock. A great example of "classic rock," or to quote the famous commercial, "Is that Freedom Rock? Well, turn it up man!"

Lovely, gentle, and rootsy, I can see how this influenced decades of music

Fabulous album by a truly classic band.

Long Black Veil is a nice cover. Baritone on it blows super low notes. Thought it was the elusive rock tuba at first. Lyrics remind me a little of the speculation about Joe Hill and why he wouldn't provide an alibi to prevent his execution. I feel like American Beauty is influenced by this but better. The weight is great and everybody knows that, caledonia mission is some of the best of what goes on here, chest fever the other good one, but not hitting as well as my other faves, but I admit it's the good shit. Christgau didn't like this one and loved the second. I'm excited to listen to that one, because this one does seem a super slow burn besides the songs I like. Starts a little like tranquilizer folkrock. 3.5/5

Bluesy rock, chill vibes. The Weight is legendary, This Wheel's on Fire is another high point

Un álbum para despejarse, dejarse llevar y viajar. Seguro lo escuche en otro momento.

So many classics that I grew up listening to.

The Band is always a treat!

Without The Weight, this would not get a 4. Kind of surprised by how flat it felt. It’s solid, but pretty repetitive and mostly just didn’t do much for me. But man oh man is that a good song.

These men sound like they’re having fun. I was expecting country rock like the Byrds, but this is good late 60s rock n roll. …And who doesn’t adore The Weight?

I love the Band, and this album has some of my favorite songs of theirs. It also has some of my least favorite. I think that they found their footing on later albums, but this one, as great as it is, misses the 5 star rating from me if only due to the inconsistency of the track list.

This album is a warm hug of Americana.

i like bob dylan n shit

The Weight is the one we all know, but this was a great example of the chill groove that the genre became.

Loved this album. Took a few songs before I recognized a very big hit they apparently released: The Weight. Favorite song: Chest Fever.

Great album

Honestly pretty solid, easy listening. I'd revisit.

I liked this much more than I thought I would. Would listen again.

Solid sound and they lost some of the twang from Levon, thankfully. The Weight is definitely a classic, worth the 4 stars alone.

Not as stark in personality or instrumentation as their other record, but still full of the easy going, relaxed and beautiful atmosphere I live about this band. Deserves to not be lumped in the other, more generic rock acts of the time.

The weight earns it a 4! Just saw an amazing tribute in the rock and roll hall of fame show. Robbie Robertson just passed.

The Weight!

On second listen I liked this album better. Very relaxing and intriguing vocals.only giving it 4 stars because some of the lyrics were just very sad. Additionally, you could tell which tracks were recorded at lower levels giving them less depth of sound and a bit muffled or ‘tinny’

A crowd pleaser when your looking to sing along with some old music.

* Tears of Rage makes me think of a movie scene during the climax where everyone's sad and bummed out and it's showing a montage of everyone sulking around in different settings right before a resolve comes to light. I dig it. * caledonia mission GOES SO HARD. i am simply vibing to this. added to 'liked songs'. * today i learned this is where 'the weight' is from which sadly the way i originally learned of this song was from an illegally made album full of song mixing by the artist 'girl talk' on the album 'feed the animals' (2008) because my music taste was even more lame when i was 18 in cosmetology school. 10/10 song! * chest fever GOT ME HEAD BOPPIN

Tears of Rage - 7.3 - chorus is painful. Love the instrumentation. vocals, especially towards the end, are awesome. To Kingdom Come - 7.5 - love the dual vocals, rhythm is better In A Station - 8.3 - Best chorus yet, most intricate lyrics. gives an ethereal tone. Caledonia Mission - 8.5 - jazzier. new vocalist is interesting. The Weight - 9.0 - great piano. awesome story We Can Talk - 8.3 - severely limited by whoever is in my left ear. Otherwise a great song. Long Black Veil - 7.5 - good story, vocals aren't great. Chest Fever - 8.0 - funky organ. bridge sounds bad. great lyrics. Lonesome Suzie - 7.3 - too slow for me. good message. This Wheel's On Fire - 6.8 - harpsichord? don't like the vocals. or mixing. I Shall Be Released - 7.9 - great lyrics, vocals. a bit boring, unfortunately

There's a 4 song run from The Weight through Chest Fever that is perfection.

An album of classic songs, blending various american musical styles of the time. This one will stand the test of time.

Such a statement piece from this outfit. Top tier.

Definitely enjoyed it some of it was a little too country for my liking

Enjoyed the album

I was vibing to this while working - 4.5/5

overall enjoyable to listen to and good album... none of the songs stood out to me tho. 8/10

Better than Bob Dylan tbh

Interesting songs and I actually recognized a few despite not recognizing the band.

I shall be released og? Generalno fina muzika

Biased in my rating because I like this genre. There wasn’t any song I felt was a skip, but nothing really stood out to me, except “The Weight.” Even so, it’s an album I wouldn’t mind listening to again.

pretty sweet. 3.8.

i liked it, the weight is a masterpiece

cool and interesting

I had forgotten how the Band were such a fantastic group. A classic that showcased their almost religious sound with harmonies and a hard edge.

The Band has always been one of my favorites and this record showcases their transition from Bob Dylan's Band to The Band.

Hän tulee ja menee. Häntä kiitetään. Folk rock. Ei yhtyeen parhaita levyjä. Vuosiluku huomioitu arvostelussa.

Classy style, feels like cleaning music.

Fantastic album. I knew a few tracks, but even the weaker songs on the album combine to make a great record.

Pretty enjoyable. The weight is a classic.

Loved this

"Music From Big Pink" by The Band is a revelation. I was pleasantly surprised by my initial lack of familiarity with this album. It's nothing short of genius. You can unmistakably feel Bob Dylan's influence behind the music. The songs, the harmonies, and the overall vibe are all beautifully crafted, making this album a true gem in the world of rock and folk music.

i fucked ur mom

Didn't get to spend as much time with this album as I would've like. Will probably revisit it soon.

Really good. But doesn't really have moments of greatness for me. I do like the style, and the bass slaps.

Enjoyed this, Caledonia mission was my fave song

Really enjoyed this album. Made me think a lot of the Grateful Dead, with moments recalling Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Van Halen, and the Beatles. Not sure if The Band influenced The Dead or the other way around, but the early jam-band stuff is great. It’s fun to pull out musical or stylistic similarities between groups, and the seventies were when some of my very favorite sounds were made. Four stars!

A super good album! I normally don't like rock before the 70's but this was definitely an exception. There was really not a bad song. 4 stars

Great stuff, but not my favorite album from The Band.

Chilly vanilly am Morgen

Feels very dense. Really requires some headphones and a little time to digest and to pick up it's nuances.

Album takes off after The Weight. 4 stars.

Solid album. I would add this to the rotation.

Some nice nice easy listening

Great! put a name on some songs i had heard before but didnt know who they where from

I mean I quite like Dylan and the Stones, and thi is pretty much another flavour of their Anericana infused folk/blues rock. Very chilled out, a mellow piece for a lazy windy, sunny weekend afternoon in the garden. 10/10/23

This is a mythic album that has never quite stuck with me. It's the type of thing that would normally be right up my alley, and I can acknowledge that there are some great songs here. But as a collection, I find it to be pretty good -- not perfect. All this to say, as guilty as I feel about, I will recognize this album's iconic status while denying it 5 stars.

Being older music it will feel less original, but it clearly stands out from the era. More than a few of the tracks from this album have lived on as cultural touch points

So I had heard of The Band because my brother had gotten into them and the backed up Bob Dylan but I don't think I heard anything beyond "The Weight", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Up On Cripple Creek". Unsurprisingly this album was amazing. From start to finish it was great. I think what separated The Band from a lot of the other rock groups I have heard from this era is just how soulfully they sang, that is not to say they are better than others, it is just a clear difference imo (I just read that they were heavily inspired by Motown and Stax which makes a ton of sense). "Tears Of Rage" starts the album out incredibly with insanely heavy vocals that really are the star of the show. I honestly was not the biggest fan of the next two tracks, they were not bad just not up to par with the rest of the album. "Caledonia Mission" has a very traditional rock and roll feel specifically with the keyboard and guitar work and I don't know if that was supposed to be a reference to the James Brown version of the song "Caldonia" given the classic rock feel, if so I thought that was a nice touch. "The Weight" is the big hit of the album and honestly is one of my favorite songs of all time. I love the crescendo in the song during the chorus and in general the guitar playing is some of my favorite of all time and I love the gospel elements (Side note Aretha's cover of this song is amazing and it has Duane Allman on slide guitar playing lights out). From there on out it is amazing song after amazing song without any misses imo. It is hard to pick my favorites of that last grouping because in all honesty they are all amazing but if I was forced to pick my favorites I would pick "This Wheel's On Fire", "We Can Talk" and "Long Black Veil". This album would be an easy 10/10 for me if it were not for those two tracks that were just meh but in spite of those two it is still a 9.5/10.

Amazing reminder of how good music made by a group of people accustomed to playing live together can sound. Great songs. Top-notch musicality. And amazing engineering / production.

Liking it so far, definitely can see how this influenced music. Tears of Rage and The Weight are amazing, a lot of the other songs are good as well but not as notable. I think this will get an elevated rating because of the influence the album clearly had on music as a whole, but as a piece it definitely seems more like a collection of songs than an album on first listen.

Didn't like The Band, for no real reason other than someone annoying from uni did like them. Turns out even a stopped clock is right twice a day, as this was really good. The Weight is an absolute all timer.

Good album. One of those 'all time classics' that I never connected with. I don't ever need to hear 'The Weight' again.

I really liked this, I'm going to add it to my peaceful listening list

This is music for that big wooden lodge in the middle of nowhere that you always dreamed of having.

It keeps it fresh and has aged well for sure. Very pleasant, just what I needed on a Monday.

Country rock. Conocida The Weight.

I hate that The Band couldn't come up with a better name. Their music is pretty soulful. A little country twang to it too. Is there a "soulful rock" genre? It may be a sign of the times since Music from Big Pink was released in the 1960s. Maybe that was just the sound then. This rock music is very mellow. Unlike the other hard rock and metal albums I've listened to through this experiment. Chest Fever is the most rock-sounding of all the tracks on this album. But I Shall Be Released sounds just like an old Black church hymn. This is music I imagine listening to while dining in a barbecue restaurant in the South. Wood floors and tables, a paper towel roll on each table so you can wipe sauce from your hands and face after eating ribs so tender the meat falls off the bone. Everyone on the waitstaff speaks with a southern drawl. Not sure if that was The Band's intention, but that's what my mind conjures when listening to Music from Big Pink.

never heard this before but i still feel biased; this is exactly my kind of music. lovely grooves and lovely voices, some songwriting misses (namely long black veil) but usually hits like on the weight. hadn't listened to that song but it's *that* popular??? i get why, it's a good track, but still. that song along with "caledonia mission" and "i shall be released" are my favorites here, but it's overall very good and very pleasant.

This album is both comfortable and organic showing a band at their creative peak. With brilliant songwriting The Band make one of the best records of the 60s.

Not bad for a backing band. Struggling with this rating some absolute classic songs which I enjoyed but also got a bit too cheesy harmony at points it reminded me of the eagles. So been swaying for the last few days between a 3 & 4. It’s an important early rock album with a good mix of music and a couple of key great songs edges it to a 4 star album.

Country rock. Conocida The Weight.

no encajé con su fundamentalismo musical ni con tears of rage como marcha fúnebre, pero algunas de estas canciones suenan como si existieran desde siempre.

The Band enter's Dylan Big Pink and record timeless tunes with and without him. A lot of the best tracks are written by Dylan, but The Band is almost fully formed on that debut (The Weight is just as good as anything Dylan wrote during that period). They would eventually get even better and reach their peak on their next album, but this is a nice piece of history that everyone should hear at least once.

I adore the Weight. My rating is probably biased as I love the 60s and 70s psychedelic rock scene.

Solid easy listening music. Love The Weight. 4/5

The Weight is one of the loveliest songs ever written. The rest of the album has good moments, but isn't the most thrilling thing ever. It's very good though.

Great album, loved The Weight and Chest Fever

Loved this album. Intro track blew my mind, “The Weight” remains a timeless classic. I typically am not a huge fan of a lot of the folk-rock stuff that came of the 60s but this may have opened my eyes a bit

I'm catching up a bit after a few missed albums. But this album is fantastic. Because it was their first I don't think they relied upon Levon Helm's vocals enough. To me that's the real sound of the band. Nevertheless, from everything about The Weight to the opening hook of We Can Talk and the lyrics "I'd rather be burned up in Canada than to freeze here in the south", there are so many catchy moments that elevate a lot of the old folk songs into rock and roll, thats best shown in Long Black Veil. A classic song, that gets new life with this record. And yeah I think everyone covered it, but the organ on Chest Fever is insane. And it all wraps up with one of the best covers of Dylan in I Shall Be Released. If the Byrds gave Dylan's songs the pop chops of the early/mid 60s, then The Band really play an intricate role in helping a lot of his songs find their real style- roots rocks, with wailing organ, slick guitars, and the feeling of driving through American and Canadian roadways.

Been wanting to listen to this so I’m glad we got it. Some folk rock is always welcomed and the band are pretty og as far as that sound goes. Groove on the opening track is sick. The weight is a timeless classic obviously. And the closing tracks raw vocals and harmonies😮‍💨. That rawness is a huge part of what draws me to the folk/folk rock genre as a whole and they hit the nail right on the head with this one Heard before: the weight Favorites: the weight, i shall be released, tears of rage, in a station MMM: TAKE A LOAD OFF FANNY TAKE A LOAD FOR FREEEEEE TAKE A LOAD OFF FANNY AAAAAAAAND PUT THE LOAD RIGHT ON ME

They're so easy to listen to and I love the lead vocals. 4.5

Pretty nice...

Delightful jam!

Love the unique and recognizable sound of The Band. Have long been listening and appreciating their music. Love how they share the role of lead vocals and their harmonies.

The band ja Dylan on sellasia jotka toimii mulle hetkittäin. Tämä levy oli parempien levyjen joukossa. Hieno klassikko. Hitit jytää. 4/5

Täähän toimi paremmin itselle kuin näiden toinen levy. Mainio fiilis levyn läpi.

Suora ja toimiva paketti! 4/5

So many hits on this album

I really loved this album - almost a five four me. Before, I had only heard about the weight, but I learned that there are really so many more good songs on the album.

This is a really solid Band album. It’s a great listen all the way through, but To Kingdom Come is a favorite of mine. There’s something about those young, pathos-filled, pleading vocals on “Tears of Rage…” they get me! That’s what I get from The Band a lot… it feels genuine. The feeling of being young, upset at the world and wondering why it has to be this way. I know so little about their history as a band, or what gets them to this album. But I always get that sweet, sad feeling listening to them. Good album for many occasions, I think it has more than meets the eye. 4/5

This band had such great chemistry together and such a great sound and feel.

Could really hear the influence this album had on a TON of other stuff. Also just fun to listen to, these songs made me happy.

I really love this album. No shortage of A+ material to be found, but it has a fair share of filler too. I think this one would be just about perfect without the extra Weight.

Can’t help but feel that spinning your father-in-law’s well-worn copy of Music From Big Pink while smoking cigars on a sunny Easter Sunday, like I did, is the way everyone should experience this record.

Liked, should listen more

Pretty good tho I didn’t listen to all of it

This album was nice, I enjoyed the soft rock that it presents and it picks up in the later ends of the album

didnt know they did some of them

Actually a nice album with a very atmospheric music. I didn't really know nothing about a band named The Band, but apparently to the historical lore it is a group supporting and accompanying Bob Dylan. And although Bobby is not my favourite artist in the world, The Band, and "Music From The Big Pink" especially is a different and a very good album. Mix of the blues, rock and jazz in every song of this record was almost perfect. The opening track was a good example of that, the best of all worlds. Side B got much slower and blander, but it was still a good effort. Positive surprise.

Yeah, love the band. Some awesome organ work here.

Enjoyable laid-back music.

Great album - especially for a debut. "The Weight" is such a great song, but all of the other songs on this album have that same vibe/feel to them. What's not to love?

Very recognizable sound. Classic rock from the last 60’s

I have this on CD but haven't listened in a while.

PREFS : Tears of Rage, In a Station, The Weight, Long Black Veil, Chest Fever, This Wheel's on Fire, I Shall Be Released MOINS PREF : We Can Talk

Great just for The Weight and Chest Fever.

Classic. Good listen.

Cute and fun! Made me smile!

I love the range of instrumental expertise on this album. "The Weight" is my favorite song from 20+ commercials. The organ work on this album is masterful, reminds me of the doors in that regard. The drums are crisp and really pulls all the other melodies along with it. The singing reminds me a bit of jam band kind of stuff, a little all over the place, not always on key, but that's the beauty of this music, it's raw.

Lovely country folk. Beautifully performed and some amazing standout tracks but overall I find it a little lacking. I think the problem is that it's just not as good as The Band, their next album. That would be a 5 so this is gonna be a 4.

Great album! Was surprised to know a few of the songs already

A thoroughly enjoyable album to listen to. I get a little tired of the singers voice after listening to a couple of The Band's songs generally, but there's nothing else really wrong with the album. Not very exciting, but it's nice and fun. I'll probably listen to it again. 4/5

Liked it

It was so easy to listen to. Great mix of instrumental and not; great variety of genres, but overall so easy to bop with or sway to

Nice classic rock album. Was familiar with The Weight and Long Black Veil. Having only been familiar with the “Last Waltz” album before listening to this, the style and instrumentation was still very familiar because of my experience listening to that album.

Good album. Enjoyed it a lot

So solid you could build a house on it.

Sounds like The Beatles. Or The Beatles sound like The Band. Anyway, enjoyable.

Randy Newman but with more swag

nice beat and overall feel

I thought this was bloody brilliant - I think my favourite The Band album. All the classics and a fun variety of bluesy, country style rock, humourous songs. Absolutely solid

Excellent product, but I preferred "The Band" of 1969 a little more. Great performance after all.

I like The Band, and, honestly, if this album had only 'The Weight' on it, it would still be worth a listen. Overall, this is a good album. I can hear where they'll go with their sound in the years to follow, such an interesting path leading up to an iconic film and soundtrack in "The Last Waltz".

You just know you’re quite an early group, when that name was still available. The Band is fully able to distinguish themselves from the sound of Dylan even though this is basically from the same period as the Basement Tapes. Everything is fresh and alive and you can tell how dynamic the process of writing and recording this album must have been. There are plenty of highlights; especially “The Weight” still sounds absolutely brilliant.

This laid back country rock is great.

Pretty good, one big hit

I did not think I would like this as much as I did. Only had time to listen to it twice, so will revisit

Very earthly and rich sounds, loved most tracks

A beautiful autumn album. Perfect to chill to on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It’s very consistent throughout. Also, one of a few examples of albums where the second half sounds much better than the first. Favourite tracks: Tears of Rage, The Weight, Lonesome Suzie, This Wheel’s on Fire. 4/5

Loved it. Knew the hits but didn’t know they played “Long Black Veil,” a song I love and forgot about.

This is bunches better than the self-titled one also on this list. Tears of Rage is very, very good. I looked it up and am reminded of a recurring observation: Bob Dylan should write songs and other people should record them. Recipe for greatness. (prior listen)

Good stuff! A few songs on here I already knew and loved, and the rest is solid too. Very lush and sonically interesting album throughout. Needs some more listens.

Some classic songs here. A few that were so so.

This was pretty enjoyable, the kinda of stuff you'd hear coming out of the radio in your grandpa's garage.

I really feel like I should have learned this in school. It was like the musical version of Huckleberry Finn.

Great groovey, folk rock

I like this a bit more than their self-titled I think. It has a bit more of the psychedelic edge to it that offsets the Americana aspect which I'm not quite as into. Fun album.

A really wonderful album. Even though I'd heard the song 'The Weight' before, I couldn't remember it until I heard it again and I never associated it with this band. Though the song is good, there's a lot more to love about the album. The instrumentals mix in with the raspy vocals really well. Not all the songs are originals, like 'Long Black Veil,' but I feel like they all went well together.

This was good

The bedrock for the people to complain of music from proverbial "back then" being better.

I really liked the Blues feel to this album. I know it’s a rock band singing and playing but I feel like they tried to pull blues into the album. It was different than what I’m used to listening to but it really flowed together well and really worked for me.

Loved this album. Turns out the way to make folk music actually interesting is just making it easy rock instead. Favorite track: Caledonia Mission

Great album, really nice mix of genres. Fav track: The Weight

Of the music from this era, this country/funk/rock/psychedelic (or whatever you'd classify The Band as) really only gets topped by Soul music. This was a solid album.

nice classic rock

a developed version of blues rock until it doesn't really share much with blues rock. It has a great sound and the weight it a great song but the rest of the songs a ren't all that different.

Just fine blues-based 60s rock. Very entertaining.

No doubt this is a classic album with more depth and consistency than just The Weight. The best record by The Band and much better than most Dylan albums.

3.5 stars. Americana classic, distinct sound. Standouts are "The Weight", "This Wheel's On Fire", "Chest Fever".

Très relax. À écouter sur une route plate sans trop de virage, voir monotone, en été. The Weigh est ma chanson préféré en ce moment, et This Wheel’s On Fire, qui joue en ce moment, est une très bonne chanson.

Better than Bob Dylan 🫢

So many good songs beyond the obvious “hits” – notably “Tears of Rage” and “Kingdom Come.” And the outre twaningness late in the record is also great – “Chest Free” and “The Wheel’s on Fire” have a lot going on and most of it is quite good. Vocals aren’t optimal (on “I Shall Be Released” in particular) but effective enough. I rate this higher than the 2nd record. Last Waltz should be on this list, if only for historical impact and resonance (Neil’s “Helpless,” Scorcese, etc.) and because many of the same songs play better live.

Classic.

I remember hearing about how this album is so momentous for a lot of musicians. My biggest problem with this album is the vocals by Richard Manuel. They are very whiny. "I Shall Be Released," for example. The vocals got really grating after a while. There are a number of covers that are so much better of that song. And "Tears of Rage" starts off very warbly. It made me think there was something with the wrong with the track the first few times I heard it. "The Weight," however is such a damn good song. I can't tell you how many times I've heard it. It's just perfection as a song. All of the music as a whole reminds me so much of the Dead (not that that is necessarily a BAD thing). But ultimately, it's hard to give this album super high marks when half the songs have such a whiny, nasally vocalist.

I really love some stuff by The Band. Other stuff is just meh. This album epitomizes that. The Weight has to be one of the greatest songs ever written (so much emotional depth in the lyrics and the instruments). Chest Fever rivals In a Gadda Da Vida for coolest organ solo. The rest? If you’re in the right (somber) mood, pretty cool. If not, it can grow tired. In that mood, i think it’s Tears of Rage, Lonesome Suzie, and I Shall be Released that do it for me.

of course this is a good album. Not bad for a back up band for Bob Dylan

It surprised me how much religious imagery was included. I’m not sure if this is a biased view as a person who has turned away from organized religion. Reminded me of The Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd.

‘The Weight’ always puts a bumping coif smirk on my face, though I think I attributed to their other album in the list. A few other good tracks, like long black veil.

Another album that I was able to get through, mostly, while taking the dog for a walk. The standout track for me, and the only track that I had previous knowledge of was The Weight. Overall a good album with that classic sound. Definitely a chill listening experience.

Likeable if it came on the radio

This organic, loose, jammy feel really just tickles my pickle. It just feels so real and honest, which makes even the mediocre songs nice to listen to.

I sAid wAiT a MiNUtE ChEsTer

The Band shows that they can step out of Bob Dylan's shadow and still be great. Man how I wish these guys could've kept it together to continue to put out great music, but we had them for how long we needed to have them and Music From Big Pink perfectly illustrates the collision that rock, folk, country and blues would happen in the Woodstock, NY scene. 4/5

Folk-rock suavecín. Un 4.

I enjoyed the gospel leanings of this album!

I don't think I ever heard this in its entirety and find it less compelling that the second album. There are some familiar tunes and a couple others that are notable. Can't give this a 5.

7/10 pleasant and classic to listen to, but did not stand out to me

Solid, though a bit slow. 7/10

Big fan

Нормальная музыка, но очень старое звучание

Folk-rock suavecín. Un 4.

Country rock. Conocida The Weight.

Hard to believe this album came out the year I was born. Classic rock goodness. The Weight...what can I say.

Excellent album!

Amazing debut album by a legendary Band.

pretty good. come back to it

Enjoyed it!

Having only heard the weight previously the rest of the album was something of a surprise. Good songs and fine musicianship.

A lot of really familiar psychedelic, hippy cuts here Highlights: In a Station, The Weight Lowlights: Tears of Rage

A Banda é boa mas sei lá não me tocou

Great album with one of my all time favourite songs (as overplayed as it might be) Fav Tracks : "The Weight" (what else would it be?)

Good melodies and comp Interesting instrumentation "Tears of Rage" has unexpected modulations and chord progressions "In a Station" has a quite memorable refrain

Great album. I know the Band for their big hits, one of which is on here. They're a great folksy-rock band, with a lot of heart in their songs and playing. Nothing too fancy or remarkable about them frankly, but they're just very solid. I know there's some Bob Dylan involvement with this group but not sure how it manifests in the music. Regardless, I really enjoyed this and I wouldn't mind getting another from them. Favorite tracks: The Weight, Long Black Veil, We Can Talk, Chest Fever, I Shall Be Released. Album art: This is a cool one, and I've seen it a number of times over the years. Speaking of Bob Dylan's involvement, apparently he painted this one. Now that's some cool lore. 4/5

A collection of vibin ditties perfect for setting the tone on a weekend morning

Dad rock reaching its MAXIMUM CAPACITY

Bob Dylan soul with credence clearwater revival vibes. Nice Jam session-esque, deep lyrics.

Music from Big Pink is the debut album of The Band. It's roots rock with a certain organic quality of the instrumentation. None of the tracks stands out, as a whole it just fits like a glove though.

Great album

Started weak but was really digging it by end

Some of this was really good.

This album succeeded because the band consisted of five exceptional musicians. It boasted perhaps the best rhythm section of the era, powerful, solemn, exuberant and concise, one of the best ever. (7/10) FT: I Shall Be Released, The Weight

Rock . Muy bueno!

4.2 - "Lonesome Suzie" exhibits some of the strange alchemy on this record - the unique blend of different genres (country, rock, soul...), the ambitious vocal performances by non-singers who manage to carry some complex melodies while conveying raw emotion, the free and easy instrumentals by seasoned studio professionals. For me, what really sets this album apart and makes it worth revisiting, are the lyrics. There seem to be loads of biblical references that mostly float well above my head.

This was a very lovely album!

This is bunches better than the self-titled one also on this list. Tears of Rage is very, very good. I looked it up and am reminded of a recurring observation: Bob Dylan should write songs and other people should record them. Recipe for greatness.

Another cracker of an album. The Weight is in my top 10 songs of all time. There are some real flashes of brilliance on here and I could easily sit back and listen to this any time.

Great 4.5/5
