Not for me

Nieko blogo, bet vėlgi country

Good storytelling but not really my jam. 2/5

No sé, fíu

Amazing voice. Nasty bass lines. Trash can music.

Better than expected, but the guitars could use some fuzz.

“Early Morning Breeze” best song. 2.4

Dog dih, the self titled track was great though

So much country relies so hard on you just liking that rural American vibe. And for me, a city rat who hates any place that doesn’t have a mall within a 2-mile radius, it’s not fun at all. This is a country album (derogatory). It romanticizes countryside life to a heavy degree. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying that, of course, but I just hate anything rural so much that I can’t bring myself to like this atmosphere. There’s also a bunch of songs about love here, which is another thing I don’t give two shits about. It’s kind of sweet, and her voice is great, but my favorite thing about this album is how short it was. 5/10

I'm just not into country at all. I can't do it

Man, the late 60s and early 70s was not kind to country music. And man, did Dolly Parton have Mama issues or what? She was already established, already a star, and this album left me wondering where the good songs were.

Country music sucks.

I hate country! (Apart from Wednesday) Boring instrumentation meant to highlight her voice. Her voice is powerful unfortunately she uses that powerful voice to say insightful lyrics such as "Here I am". The lyrics generally sound like she got drunk in the pub and got on the microphone to talk about her life. 2

Dolly Parton is a great artist with a crisp and pleasant voice, and I know she's an icon in her own country. She writes her own songs (thousands of them, apparently), and she even appears to be a really nice person. I can only respect her work and career - but country just doesn't seem to be my kind of music, no matter how hard I try. I think it's really an acquired taste ; barring a few exceptions, I feel absolutely no connection to the melodies, themes and mythology of the genre. It doesn't even bore me, it's just... background music I don't really understand. That being said, even I can recognize that this album belongs to the good ones. The music is never unpleasant or pretentious ; Dolly has a sweet voice, and sings with a touching simplicity that just feels very natural. A subjective 1* for me, but I'll add one star for talent and authenticity. At least it's not country-pop. 3/10

Good songwriting, great voice, but that music doesn't tick any box in me. I do love Jolene.

She’s got a voice… but to tell stories about being a poor redneck girl, in the exact opposite way of any kind of feminism. When I listen to this kind of music, I picture some hillbilly sleeping with his sister after church, social and moral misery. I just can’t get into it. The small bursts of energy, some cool harmonies, and a few bass lines catch my attention, until a Ford pickup truck or a Winchester quickly comes back to mind. I really can’t get into it … but I give it 2 stars because even this beats The Incredible String Band or Eno’s airport trips. Maybe also because of her tits, damn!

No. Just no. I love her voice but I can't do this country vibe. Sorry.

Dolly has an interesting voice, which is very listenable, but not a huge amount of variety in this album made it pretty bland listening.

I did not enjoy this album. I don't like country and this album didn't change my mind on the matter.

I really don’t like Dolly Parton’s voice whatsoever, and Country as a genre is one of my least favourite. However, this is much better than Trio. Somewhat rocky in places, ‘Here I Am’ being the best track. If only it was being sung by someone else.

I never was all that much into Country, nor Dolly. I know her to be a wholesome person but her music has never been my thing. Having listened through this, it's still true - also her voice kinda annoys me. Still this was an OK listen.

coat of many colours more like album of shitty songs lol

Not my cup of tea.

She had a great voice but it’s hard core country

Bwah ni zo waw

Geen fan van country

2 Cuntry

not my usual genre at all. that was kinda okay surprisingly. im sorry i lowkey skipped through it.. traveling man was good though

Title track is great, the rest of the songs have some weird lyrics. Not my overall favorite Dolly album.

Dolly is an icon per se, but I am not a fan of country genre, sadly :) Songs are cheerful and her voice is super thin, while singing of very serious topics and heartaches - that part is something I never fully understood.

Coat of Many Colors - 6/10: I really like the meaning behind the song/lyrics. Traveling Man - 5/10: I like her vocals and the beat isn't terrible. My Blue Tears - 4/10: It's just not a good song in my opinion. Her voice gets kind of drowned out by the instruments. If I Lose My Mind - 3/10: Just not that great in my opinion. The Mystery of the Mystery - 3/10: Same as the last song. She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like) - 5/10: I like her vocals on this song. Early Morning Breeze - 3/10: Didn't wow me or anything. The Way I See You - 3/10: I don't really like slower songs. Here I Am - 3/10: Just didn't really enjoy it. A Better Place to Live - 3/10: Same as the last song. Overall Score: 38/100 Overall Rating: 4/10 - I'm not into country music, and while the album isn't bad, I don't see myself listening to it again. I do enjoy Parton's voice, though.

Not sure if I’m the target audience for this. Not bad, mostly just a bit boring.

Not for me

Not my vibe I’m afraid Dolly!

Not at all my genre, not music I would put on but the vocals and sound are good. The storytelling is very fun and clear

OK for country.

she has a good voice

Track 1. (Coat Of Many Colors) I don't really listen to a lot of country music, so it's probably something I wouldn't typically turn on. But I do like the message of this song, and Dolly's voice is very whimsical. It actually has very sad and deep lyrics, which I feel set Dolly apart from other country artists. 6.5/10 Track 2. (Traviling Man) Its alright, nothing amazing tbh its sorta underwhelming. Also very short. 4.2/10 Track 3. (My Blue Eyes) Better than the previous track, it's just got that classic country sound to it, nothing particularly special. Like the melody. Also very short lol. 5.1/10 Track 4. (If I Lose My Mind) All the songs seem to follow the same heartbreak, talking to her 'mama' and crying lol. Just a slower version of the previous track. 5/10 Track 5. (The Mystery Of The Mystery) Vocals stood out on this track. I like how the instrumental doesn't drown out her voice. I think that's why I liked it better. 5.7/10 Track 6. (She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like)) I'm starting to notice all the songs sound very similar and almost blend; no song is really standing out from this album. Again shes got an incredible voice, so it's not exactly earbleeding to listen to, but not a standout song. 5.5/10 Track 7. (Early Morning Breeze) Actually has a more unique sound than the rest. It's got a very freeing, whimsical sound if that makes sense. Not sure what's so different about this song to make me like it, maybe the instrumental is different, I think it suits Dolly's voice better. 6.4/10 Track 8. (The Way I See You) I do like this one better, not for any particular or standout reason, but I do like it. 6.3/10 Track 9. (Here I Am) Again, pretty average, more upbeat than the rest, so that's a positive. It's got a catchy melody, but that's the most I can really say about it. At least it's over 3 minutes lol. 5.7/10 Track 10. (A Better Place To Live) its whatever, I HATE the 'la, la, la' in this song omg I'm sorry it's so annoying. You had good intentions with this song, girl, but it's a no for me. 4/10 Notes: very short album, not even close to Dolly's best album, so not sure what this is doing on the top 1001 albums. Final Score: 5.4/10

Nice bass , prominent in the mix. Short album Good classic country n western, but not the best album 2/5 seems harsh ,buuuut...

As much as I love Dolly, this was too country and western for me to really enjoy. However, the title track is gorgeous. It probably deserves a 2.5, but I don’t have that luxury and didn’t enjoy it as much as albums I’ve given 3* to.

This may be a sin to say, but I don't really like her voice or the genre.

Listening Notes What a voice! Very succinct album, she wrote most of the tracks and it clocks in at less than 30 min total runtime. Just feels like classic country standards, even though my experience in that genre is minimal. First time listen? Yes Fav tracks: Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, Here I Am Will it go into your rotation? No but should have more Dolly in my life

It was exactly what I expected from a dolly parton album, I liked the joseph and the multicolor coat metaphor but I feel like it got a little too women hater for me

I definitely could not listen to more than half an hour of this at a time.

I know dolly parton is historially so iconic, and she IS an icon...but im not a country pop girlie im so sorry. jolene still slaps though!!

Queen Dolly. Prefer her later stuff.

she has a beautiful voice but I simply cannot get into that style of singing / music

Quite enjoyed listening to this but not sure i'd have it on any sort of rotation. Particularly dark in parts, like lots of country music, off-set by some slide guitar so you come out of the other side feeling a bit confused. The message i'm taking from this album is don't p*** off a country singer.....

I liked some of the storytelling but the instrumentals felt too samey and bland

Her voice is so lovely and there were some standout pieces in here (the titular song is really good), but it kinda all blended together. Love you Dolly...

Not my style

Not my genre.

Respect for Dolly, but this is quite generic country music to my ears.

A fascinating album just because of the singer. At the same time, a rather annoying album, as the genre doesn't really shine, with a few exceptions. The whole album doesn't rise to a very high star level in my books.

Country still ain't for me, but atleast Dolly didn't make me chew the table corner off while I power through the whole album. Few of the tracks had a nice groove to them, even fewer had a touch of rock'n roll, but mostly it's her voice that made me want to stick till the end. I think I only skipped few tracks mid way through. Sadly no Jolene's or Nine to five's here, but it wasn't all torture either.

Light 2,5

2 out of 5. Nice and short, and better than most country albums I've heard so far.

This is a fine Country album but not for me. Side note, Dolly Parton is an incredible singer.

Pre-thoughts: - Have only a slight idea of what to expect, I have never delved deep in Dollys discog as shes more of a cultural icon than a musician in my mind. - Im hoping to be pleasantly surprised, mostly due to the year this album came out. - GD I love a short run time. 28 mins During Thoughts/Takeaways: - Shes really not my favorite vocal ever. - This is doing nothing for me - My Blue Tears is a stand out tracks, her harmonies sound great Post Thoughts - I feel like I just listened to the same song for 28 minutes. - Lyrical content is structured and well done, nothing popped about the instruments here. It felt like it was her voice and that was it. - Does not entice me to listen any deeper

Dolly's got a great voice, no disagreements here. However, the songwriting/lyricism ranges something fierce. Some songs are actually pretty good, but others are kind of bad. Country's never been my thing, and Dolly's not helping.

Not a fan of C&W

Coat Of Many Colors looks good out of the gate but gets threadbare pretty quickly. Still not a big fan of country music or Dolly, this one was listenable. And not bad for having put out three albums in ‘68 and ‘69, then five albums in ‘70 and four in ‘71. L = (2.4*s) Seemed like it might be a tribute to her mother… J = (2.3*s) She gets bigger as time progresses…

Dolly is an artist that may have become famous more for her huge tracts of land than her singing talents. This album is mediocre but for country, tolerable. It's not your typical twangy, hick schtick. The title track is alright with the sentimental story. Bettin' she gets at least one more on the list. Stuffing this coat back in the closet with 1.67 stars.

Much like her personality, Dolly's music has a certain charm to it. This is some early bubble gum country which is easy enough to stomach for 27 minutes. It's nothing special for me, but I can see why someone would enjoy this. Coat of Many Colors is short and sweet much like Dolly herself. Country is not my thing but Dolly Parton has always been a treasure. I'll never fault anybody who is a fan of Dolly whether that applies to her music or other professional endeavors. There's plenty other music I'd rather listen to, but if country is what is on the playlist I'd hope that Dolly is involved. 1.92 stars

Hm, this sounds conspiciously like Lurleen Lumpkin, but worse.

The line between folk music and country music can often be quite blurry, especially between older folk music and traditional country music. I think listening to this album helped me see a lot of the differences between the genres seem much more apparent. And perhaps this album and Dolly Parton in general is just a bad example of the the traditional country genre, but frankly this album was just cringe. And I would say it was mostly at the fault of the lyrics. I mean just look at The Mystery of the Mystery. Yikes. I will admit the storytelling of the title track was quite nice though and made the playlist. But in general I found the lyricism lackluster whereas that is usually one of the highlights for me in older folk music. Maybe it’s not fair for me to compare genres in the ranking of this album, but I digress.

Far too twangy for me - not enjoyable. Very simplistic songs.

Meh… the first song is good. Not really my jam. But I do love Dolly.

Dolly is a treasure, but this one is not for me. Found it hard to even listen in the background while working.

She has a good voice but the songs are real boring

Decisamente non il mio genere

Never listened to Dolly Parton except Jolene before. Not a fan of country or whatever it is but I love her voice. Cool vibes, put me in a good mood.

Songs are pleasant enough, but I’ll probably never listen to Dolly regularly. I’d say this is a 2.5

Very traditional C&W. Good songs good voice, never really my thing though.

Meh. Love Dolly, but this was not exactly music history.

Seemingly another artist where I can’t stand her voice but everyone else thinks it’s wonderful! It just cuts straight through the music and ruins it. The first song in particular I had to check my speakers were working ok as her voice seems to distort. Other than that the music was generally average country, saved by the fact the album was so short.

Dolly Parton is one of those artists that you never want to criticize because she’s so lovely and honorable as a figure in music. With this being said, this album is OK. I believe that Mrs. Parton has a commanding presence throughout this record, but as a whole, I’m not struck by much of it. Still though, she’s nice (6/10, 3/5 on this scale) (Update: 2/5 now)

So the title track is wildly powerful, and this album has a bunch of gospel songs on it including the title track. The only problem is I have a personal issue with gospel music and religious themes in music. I think that’s a major problem I have with country in general, but not every country song has to be religious and yet somehow they ALL are somehow. It doesn’t feel like pandering with Dolly cause it feel genuine the same way it feels genuine when Elvis sings gospel, I just have no space for gospel music in my life and I like it that way. That being said, traveling man might be my all time favorite Dolly song of all time. I had never heard it before. I also think I’d like country more if it was closer to this (rockabilly sorta). I really like country music when they pick up the tempo and bring in some electric guitars. If the whole album was music similar to Traveling Man I think this album could’ve been a 5. But I do have respect for this album and the production quality. I just think there’s only like one song on the whole album I truly loved.

Parton's voice is great but besides that the songs are just kinda run of the mill?

Gar nicht meins. Zum Glück nicht lang.

Good country music, but still just country music

This music is just not for me.

Her eighth album. Country. A very short and very sweet twenty seven minutes of solid old Country Music. Nice vocals, nice songs and ...ummm..it's nice. Not much else to say.

W sumie średnie. 2/5

Cool but gets old very fast 2/5

It’s fine, she’s a good song writer and great singer but nothing grabbed me

Really wanted to like this. But it just didn’t do it for me.

Classic country album, nice voice.

I tried to listen the whole album but it really is not my style.

There is a lot of nice sentiment on this album. The lyrics seem heartfelt and intimate, so I guess I can see the appeal, but not hear it. Sound-wise, it is pure, crystallized country, with everything I don't like about the genre.

Always found country hard to enjoy, and this is no exception. Dolly's voice is quite annoying, but it has a couple of cute songs. Best song: Coat Of Many Colors Worst song: The Way I See You Cover check: Captures a personal feeling

A string of very basic country songs and an annoying vibrato. Most of the songs mesh together making this short 27 minute album feel like a blink of an eye.

This is #day342 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… another country album. I'm sorry, Dolly, this was pretty average. I've nothing else to add. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day343.

Se me hizo repetitivo

Not a country fan but I didn’t mind this for about 3/4ths of the project, but it really started to drag. Which is nuts to say about a sub 30 minute album. (2.5/5) “School House Rock-ass music”- Al

It’s commercial and radio-friendly country music. Kinda nice, but devoid of soul.

Some good storytelling and i love dolly but this one? I don’t think i had to listen to this

Some ol country, the voice of JOLENE originally sang the I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

There were a few foot tappers and interesting lyrics. She has talent. Voice grating at times and fairly one dimensional overall.

Poor. Too polished, mediocre songs.

NOT MY

2, it was ok but I would not listen agi

Look, I’ve got nothing but respect for Dolly Parton. She’s insanely talented, sharp as hell, and probably one of the most generous people on the planet. But when it comes to Coat of Many Colors, the music just hasn’t aged all that well. Yeah, the title track is heartfelt and personal, and I get why it’s important in her catalog. But a lot of the rest of the album feels dated — super simple arrangements, old-school country storytelling that doesn’t quite land the same way today. It’s more charming than compelling, and after a few songs, it kind of blurs together. Dolly’s voice is great, and you can tell she was already a strong songwriter, but as an album, this one’s more of a time capsule than something I’d go back to often.

Not a country fan, but ok, Dolly Parton has a great voice

Pretty good

Can't deny the quality of Dolly's voice, but I also can't deny that this brand of country is not for me. This album feels sleepy with the exception of a couple of tracks that dip into a gospel vibe or edge into something a little more contemporary. I won't be spinning this one again.

There were three broad types of country music played in my house growing up. My dad's country music - Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, the outlaw/working man's stuff, the stuff we all mostly liked - Jo Dee Messina, Alan Jackson, the pop country stuff, and then my mom's country music - women singing songs about the most depressing and terrible things I'd ever heard of at the age of eight, which I'd sigh and slouch and complain about being subjected to and usually told to "LISTEN to it" and "listen to the words" and this was supposed to make me realize something. I don't mean to give my child self too much credit, but it usually just seemed like the words were supposed to be about loving someone who beat the hell out of you two songs ago and I didn't like it. I like Dolly Parton overall but this album has never been particularly enjoyable to me.

Not my bag!

Favorite track: coat many colors. Overall score: 4.1/10

self titled track is a banger, rest blended together for me on first listen

Dolly Parton has her own theme park. It's true, it's called Dollywood and I hear it's a lot of fun and not at all like this album.

Dolly’s amazing. And a worthy icon in her genre. That genre isn’t for me, but she deserves her status as a living legend for many reasons.

Early Morning Breeze = Best track. Otherwise, lots of slide guitar and sweet, sad Dolly.

And people say that AI does not create anything new, only remakes what people have already made. Well, I haven't heard those people complaining about Dolly Parton. Fucking hypocrites

not my style, skipped through a lot of the songs

This album only solidifies my general attitude towards Dolly. I dont understand the love for ol’ Doll. Her music is SO lame compared to 70s rock n roll. If you gave me a set of records from the 70s and I saw her name, I would try a random record before listening to hers All that said, Traveling Man and She Never Met A Man are good.

My first time listening to a classic country album. Exactly what I expected. nothing I particularly loved but nothing I disliked. 6/10

I love Dolly but not old school country. This just wasn’t for me.

Yllätti positiivisesti. Parempi ku Prince.

I hate country music. We'll see if this changes my mind. Post-listen: Maybe I don't hate country music. But I certainly don't like it. I didn't hate this album, but I doubt I'll ever listen to it again. Also it ended very abruptly.

I mean this just really isn't my kind of music. But I hope you like it.

Well I'm definitely not a country fan but I have a lot of respect for Dolly Parton. It was listenable for me for sure but I'm going to go with a 2 since country is not for me.

have always loved Dolly's voice. But the music is not my style.

Dolly, I do love you but your music isn't for me.

'Here I Am' vond ik wel geinig. 5,5/10 Highlights: Here I Am

Simpel. 6/10 Highlights Coat of Many Colors

I like the title track The rest was not the best. Bland and boring country

Alright, I’m pretty sure I’m not a country guy

Gostei de algumas músicas, tipo Coat of Many Colors e The Mystery Of The Mystery e Here I Am.

Э... Early Morning Breeze.

Southern, not very catchy. Really just talking with some music.

Una que otra canción es divertida. Después no me gusta mucho

I’m sure it’s a good country music album, just not my thing

Country achtig. Niet echt waard om opnieuw te luisteren

my bias toward country music slowly rises and stays... 2/5

I think Dolly is a great person but I have never loved her music. I think her voice is overly saccharinated and her songs lightweight. This wasn't bad though 2.5 stars

There’s an introduction to Baudrillard that, talking about the precession of the simulacrum, presents an image of visiting an American desert only to feel like you’ve already been there on account of how many western movies you’ve seen. I’m not totally convinced by the philosophical implications of that thought – nor do I think that’s what Jean was aiming at – but it’s always stuck in my mind as a sort of warning, in its own right. Don’t let the aura of a thing be eclipsed by your familiarity with its representations. So with Dolly, I try to keep it situated. I try to hear it in-itself. And I hear, in that in-itself, an album that’s plainly country; well intentioned; and full of the sort of judgemental rhetoric you’ve come to expect from America’s specific take on Protestantism. I’ve never met a Dolly I too fondly liked.

Feels like asking someone to eat Oregon Trail food and rate it

I am not a huge fan of country music in general. However, this album is much nicer than most modern country music, which is usually just guys with a Southern accent singing about how much they love trucks and women. Dolly Parton's songs seem more personal than shallow. I'm sure if you like country music, you'll probably enjoy this album.

I just can't stand this twee, slide guitar country music. I don't care if this was the original, it's still shit. Dolly is a saint though and must be protected at all costs.

First time listener of this album. Not a country fan and don’t really like her voice. It kinda rakes at me, I’m afraid. Lyrically, it is good though and I’m glad I listened to it this once.

Country is not my thing, but Dolly is worthy of respect.

Not her best album.

Dolly has such distinct voice very pretty. Most of the songs sounded the same, pretty formulaic

I had known the name Dolly Parton for a long time. I had probably forgotten that she is a country icon. After the last country albums as part of this project, which I found surprisingly not so bad for myself, I was looking forward to this album. Well, after listening to 4 tracks, I knew again what bothers me about the genre. I don't need this southern whining. 2/5

Please -- no more country music!

This one wasn’t really for me in instrumentation, musical texture or lyrics. Bit of a lack of diversity in the songs for me. Rating: 2

No la escogería entre la música de 1971

Not a big fan. It’s alright for a country album but I still not big on it. A high 2 star album

Absolute oldie Absolutely american What's the deal with all the "oh mama"s Songs all sound the same tbh

Dolly's voice shines on this album, but that's the only remarkable thing about it.

Not my jam

Dolly is sweet and naive and I give her credit for keeping Coat of Many Colors a tight 27 mins but in the end it’s very very old timey. Not terrible but may as well be from a different planet 4.3/10

Waaay too country. Good voice, but sometimes tries to imitate Bob Dylan.

It is a good album. The reason for my low rating is simply that it is not at all my style. I found that the topic of songs was heavily concentrated around family, which was nice, but also infidelity. I understand that it may be her way of navigating through these complex feelings; however, the way it was sung about did not leave me very comfortable. Otherwise, her voice is beautiful, songs are lyrical, but also quite similar to one another, which I think was another reason that prevented me from loving the album to its entirety.

Fine but not my type. 2/5

Not bad for a country album, Travelling Man made me chuckle.

sorry dolly

I listened to the album 2 minutes ago and I couldn’t tell you how any of these songs go. 5/10

I'm not a fan of country music, but it was okay. There was something about her voice that was bothering me throughout the album that I couldn't figure out. It might have been her microphone, the way it was mixed, or maybe it was just clipping (she was kinda shouting). But there was something about her voice that wasn't meshing well with the instruments. I'm just glad it's short. High 2.

Sorry, Dolly. I love you so much but did not love this album.

Was hoping for better. Some decent songwriting, but most of the subject matter wasn’t that appealing. Plus, I generally don’t think of her voice being that warbly.

It’s fine

Respect to Dolly but this hit far too many religious themes.

A 2.5, some good country, some stereotypical boring country. Would listen again.

Great voice, very talented. One decent song on the album. Will not be going into my collection.

216/1001

Classic old style country fare... if you like that stuff

un country un pò lento..

Country das antigas. Legalzinho

Not my jam

Lovely album. Not for me. Other than the title track, nothing stood out.

Country is so polarising for me, and unfortunately this ended up on the wrong side of it. Not feeling this at all. It sounds like any other country music I've heard.

Just not feeling it. I enjoy oldie time C&W butt for some reason she is just grinding on me... .

I understand and accept that Dolly Parton is a wonderful example of a human being. Thoroughly decent, deeps her private life private and is an exemplar in her chosen art. Unfortunately, her chosen art is country music, which I really can't stand. The less egregiously country tracks (Here I am and a better place to live, notably) are sufficiently free of steel guitars, slide guitars and jew's harps that I can actually listen to them without pangs of genuine discomfort, and in these tracks I can see that Parton has an earnest, pure and powerful voice that would do so much better in literally any other kind of music. Star added for Dolly being wonderful.

Not really my bag, enjoyed Traveling Man but the rest didn’t grab me

Never heard this before. I was hoping for something much better. I'm not a fan of the production choices. I've got issues with the mix throughout, and the arrangements don't maximize the impact of the songs. In particular, Dolly's voice doesn't sound that great. She just doesn't sound up to the level of the great female C&W singers that came before her like Loretta Lynn. There's a lot of better traditional country albums out there. Not sure why this one was included in this list.

Nothing for me. I know Dolly and a few of her songs but none on this album.

Really showcases her voice. Not my typical style but may be a couple I go back and listen to.

I was hoping this would be a “slay” from Queen Dolly but it’s a nay for me 😭 My fave is “ she never met a man “ because it’s a cutthroat diss track far ahead of its time for 1971

Ur-country. Mysigt? Javisst! Kul och spännande? Nej. Lite för kristet och sockersött. Som hur vacker kärlek beskrivs som "a butterfly that has a million colors" i 'The Way I See You'. Ibland fantastiskt historieberättande, i 'Traveling Man' och huvudattraktionen 'Coat of Many Colors'. Bästa låt: Traveling Man.

It was alright, not really my style of music

Too bland and country

I listened to this in the background. Maybe that's why it didn't keep my attention. I have not listened to a lot of Dolly Parton but I am aware of her contributions to country music.

I'm not a big country person, but that said, this album had some highlights. It helps that it's short, so I can quickly move on from the stuff I really don't like.

Coat of Many Colours

Always found country hard to enjoy, and this is no exception. Dolly's voice is quite annoying, but it has a couple of cute songs.

These are not my words. They are a review from another person from 2021. However, they perfectly describe how I feel about this album, and Dolly's music overall. "Full disclosure: I've never much cared for Dolly Parton's voice. I don't care for the way she uses vibrato and her voice is so sharp it could cut through steel. Which is not to say that she's a bad singer--her interpretative skills and phrasing are better than most and her pitch is dead on. It's really just a matter of personal preference, purely subjective. On Coat of Many Colors, while there is a fair amount of variety within the rubric of mainstream country (ballads, country-rock, etc.) it's all very generic, if well played but what I would guess are a bunch of Nashville studio cats. The melodies are nothing special either. The one area that Parton excels in is narrative songwriting. The opening two tracks, Coat of Many Colors and Traveling Man, are superb--I'd stack them up against the best of the giants of country music, like Hank Williams Sr., Lefty Frizzell, etc. Seemingly without effort, Dolly manages to cram in character writing, narrative, local color, comedy, and earned sentiment into three minutes or less! That's a rare talent and a golden ticket in popular music. Unfortunately, not all of the other songs she pens on the album are as magnificent. There's a nice ode to meeting God in the wonders of nature (Early Morning Breeze), but the rest of her lyrics could have come from a dozen other artists. To sum up, the terrific lyrics of the opening two songs overcome the bland music (although admittedly it might have sounded fresher back in 1971) and Dolly's voice (YMMV), but the rest of the album pretty much goes in one ear and out the other, not leaving much of a trace. Pleasant enough, but really slight."

Entirely underwhelming throughout. Would never play again, though nothing too offensive.

Coat Of Many Colors

Not a fan

Ni si ni no

Ok..but not really my genre

I found a positive… great bass playing on so many tracks really stood out for me, but not enough to distract me from the rest of it. I guess it’s as good an example as you’ll find from an absolutely terrible genre. 2 stars for that.

I know that Dolly Parton is a global superstar and an American national treasure but American country music is not my thing at all. Which is odd because I do like English folk music. Probably because I’m English dohh! I don’t mind Bob Dylan’s early stuff which is if I’m not mistaken is American folk music. Is there a difference between country and folk music? I must find out. A bit later…… “ Folk songs use acoustic instruments. They often rely on found instruments to establish a beat. These might include sticks, spoons, washboards, food stamps, handclaps, and finger snaps. Additionally, folk songs change from generation to generation largely because they were passed on orally. Other key sounds of note: Folk songs have several verses with an easy-to-remember chorus sung between each. Aptly, folk songs were written for the common folk. Country music may have a story to tell but it is less likely to be a protest. Country music often consists of ballads and Texas two-step and line-dance tunes. The harmony is simple and the sounds often include banjos, electric guitars, steel guitars, acoustic guitars, fiddles, dobros and even harmonicas and Irish whistles. Tunes can range from haunting to sprightly” There we are then. But wait! The article I copied mentioned Taylor Swift and I’ve recently began to listen and like her. But I still don’t like Dolly as wonderful she is. 2/5 8/7/24

Appreciate Dolly Parton, but not even she's gonna make me enjoy country music.

Not for me.

I’m good on this. No more!

meh. country

I didn't mind this. Country is not my things but I could appreciate this album. Unlikely to listen again but I do get Dolly.

Am I the only one thinking those lyrics are so sad?

I am not a fan of country music at all, even though it seems to be the thing for 2024. That said this album was an easy and nice listen with some good songs on it. the songs are country with a hint of pop, fun and engaging. I doubt ill listen to it again but I enjoyed. Favourite song: Travelling man and the way I see you. Least favourite: There is not a bad song on the album. Album artwork: Not one to hang up on the wall at home

I'm not a huge fan of country music. That probably explains why I don't like this album. I can understand why people think it's good, but personally I don't get it.

joa, ganz nett

I'm not too familiar with Dolly Parton's oeuvre as we say but Nashville is my favorite movie of all time and I actually listen to its soundtrack as if those were "real" songs, meaning I actually enjoy the inanity of lines like "we must be doing something right to last 200 years." So when the title song to this album started I immediately turned to the track list of Nashville to figure out which song was imitating this one, and then as her album progressed and as I kept looking at the Nashville listing, I realized how beautifully they align. I'm listening to The Mystery of the Mystery right now, and well, I think the title speaks for itself. Honestly, I think Nashville's better because it's got two bonus tracks: It don't worry me and I'm easy. I'm sure Dolly has great songs and albums but I don't think this is one of them. Early Morning Breeze is the only standout (which aligns with Bluebird on Nashville, fyi). Tell me that A Better Place to Live is not Keep a-Going.

I like Dolly as a person and celeb, but not much of a fan of her music.

Not really for me

Another country album...

The lyrics to me are a bit cheesy and over the top. Unfortunately, I don't see the beauty but the attempt to give them meaning and weight by painting bigger pictures or asking philosophical questions without looking for answers. Regarding love and her relationship with men, she shows vulnerability and fears of losing someone. While these feelings are universally relatable, I'm still not fond of the execution. It feels like she doesn't see her worth and needs to persuade her crush or lover that she'd be the superior or less flawed choice compared to someone else. I wish she would reveal a more confident side of herself as well. Other than that she has a nice voice and the album is well-produced. I don't really dig the music though.

Passed me by, nice enough. Dolly is great but this isn't really my thing.

Plussat: Dolly on ihana Miinukset: kantri on kamalaa

Great the 2 things I despise the most in a single song. Country and religious brainwashing. And here I sat thinking I hated Bob Dylan. As much as I dislike country music and aleluya god is strong and helps me lyrics, I will let that slide with Dolly Parton cause in a world full of trumptards be a Dolly and make this shitty world a better place and help as many as you can. My respect for Dolly as a human being is far greater than my dislike for her genere. I find her voice to be beautiful and soothing and kind of mesmerizing at the same time. She sound like southern comfort and it helped me go through most of the album. I just dont like country music overall

Dolly is lovely, and she has a great voice. But I really don't like this type of Country music, so on balance it's a 2

1971 country music.

Great voice. Just not my thing. Every song sounds the same.

Dolly is cool. However, listening to the entire album, that voice does irritate.

Some good songs

song rating: -coat of many colors 5/10 -travelling man 8/10 -my blue tears 3/10 notes: whole song was plop end was a lil better -If I lose my mind 2/10 notes: so fucking boring could use electric guitar -the mystery of the mystery 4/10 notes: every song sounds like the last in a bad way chorus was pretty chill tho -she never met a man 3/10 notes: I fucking hate dolly Parton #certifiedDollyPartonHater -early morning breeze 8/10 notes: instrumental fucking awesome dude -The way I see you 4/10 notes:below average -here I am 8/10 notes: pretty good could use a carti feature and for whitearmour to produce it tho -A Better Place To Live 3/10 notes: slop af album genuinely better without this Overall: 4/10 Dolly Parton should never drop again

dont like her voice so -4 from all ratings for a comparitive rating. rating on a scale from 1-10 for a COUNTRY song (kanye would solo all dolly's songs bru) skipped the first half of the album 2. Travelling Man - best song on album, groovy fast paced good 9.3/10 7. early morning breeze is kinda fire when the climax blows everywhere, "morning breeze" lyric go hard - 5.9/10 8. The way I see you - instrumentation is scrummy 7.1/10 9. Here I Am - drake snake would go hard for a verse here 6/10 10. A Better Place To Live - this is the song i imagine the normal 9-5 worker would sing while driving in their deisel-guzzling car in the 70's. Overall kinda slop its like dua lipa but for 60's bitches. Only redeemable part is the groovy ass guitar and instrumentals. 3/10 final rating.

Cornball Americana.

Not bad. I am not a country fan but I like this better than rap and some of the other albums I’ve heard. I will give this 2.5 stars.

Lala-Musik.

I am not a Nashville "pick up truck and a dog" fan. To me this is cookie cutter bland Nashville. Lots of mountain nostalgia. There is some good pedal steel buried in there.

never much of a fan to be honest.

Dolly is a legend. She has a beautiful country voice. But almost every song sounds just the same. And I’ve never heard someone sing about their momma so much. Just not my style / thing.

She’s fantastic. And these songs are probably awesome one at a time. But as an album, rough. But talent!

Okay, no bangers and not my kind of country but enjoyable

Okay country

Huge respect for the icon, but this is really not my vibe.

Dolly Parton, what else can I say? Not my kind of music

Expected this one to be more upbeat, but it didn't capture my attention like I thought it would - maybe because I was doing things while it was on, but it didn't make me want to stop and listen.

Quite boring, all just blends into a hillbilly jingle jangle!

Not a country fan but not a bad album. 2

seeing how much good dolly parton has done for the world, and hearing just how good she is at singing, i feel that i want to enjoy her music more but i am just bored. the emotional lyrics don't affect me at all, but at least i can smile at the comedy lyrics.

6/10 not really my cup of tea because i’m generally not into the genre. but it was definitely not utterly terrible or unlistenable and that’s for sure. + i know this is dolly’s thing or whatever haha but i don’t particularly enjoy her vocals/singing style and all that. it’s just personal taste and again if i liked the genre i would most certainly enjoy this record better but i wouldn’t say it’s excessively bad either, that’s what i’m trying to say.

Not a fan of this kind of country music

only the first song was okay, everything else is a very basic country song

Well, it’s country with a noisy voice. 2 stars

As an entertainer, I like Dolly Parton. This album - not a fan.

Favorite Song: Coat of Many Colors Album Notes: I'm just not a huge fan of her voice. The melodies are good, but this isn't my favorite.

Never would have listened to this album outside this project, but I'm glad I gave it a listen. The guitar instrumentation is great, my favorite part. Dolly's distinctive vobrato is grating on me.

- Okay wow this is insane they gave us this after her halftime show - 10 songs 27 minutes is the perfect album length - Sorry Dolly did not vibe with this too hard - Traveling Man was good but the rest was eh - 2.5

Not bad but not for me.

Country music just isn't for me, I tried it in its modern take, and it just sucks with its lyrics about trucks and beer. Dolly Parton, however, is a treasure of a human and her voice is lovely. It's a 2* for me. Lyrics a little saccharine at times. Song highlights: Coat of Many Colors

I HATTTTTTTEEEEE WITH A STRONG PASSION COUNTRY MUSIC: This is the biggest bullshit of an albumj bc Dolly Parton doesn't produce anything notable other than like three songs. It's all just drivel which I have no clue why anyone has any interest in listening. BAD.

It's nothing wrong with Dolly, I just have a strong aversion to country.

No thanks

This rating is purely based on personal preference. For what it is, it's good, but it's not my jam.

Early Morning Breeze is a beautiful song. It was nice to hear a Dolly album, but I am not inspired to look further and I don't see myself returning.

Jolene is an absolute banger but no other songs caught my ear.

This is probably a 5-star if you're into country. Nice to hear some Dolly that isn't 9-5 or Joline and there were a couple tracks I somewhat enjoyed, but over all it's just not for me.

Sorry, I found this very boring. Simply not my kind of music, I guess.

The lyrics are interesting but whatever lyrics don't matter anyway. I guess this sorta country isn't really my thing for now. Country Roads is kinda nice but 30 minutes of it... not so much.

Not my cup of tea, but Dolly's voice is truly great. "Here I am" is a good song. 2/5 Would not listen again.

Not a fan of Dolly. 2/5

Definitely not my vibe

This is way to American for me, sorry…

no strong feelings.dollys fine but not for me.

eh country, the trad kind, not feeling it

Great voice, crap tunes

not my kind of thing

Due respect and admiration but I wouldn't listen to this storytelling album by choice... Although I can appreciate its significance.

Dolly Parton is an excellent individual, surely being one of the most likeable still-living celebrities, but at the end of the day her music is still my least favorite major genre of country. There are some things here that are interesting to listen to, from her mom stealing her boyfriend from under her nose to a good ol' cucking (who the fuck makes a song about cucking?), but the music is so repetitive and boring that I hardly want to listen to it. It isn't offensive musically as a lot of country tunes are nowadays, but it still isn't that great or anything.

I understand that it an amazing album, pero no es la música que me gusta

Not even going to listen to this. Hate Dolly Parton. 4/10.

Love Dolly Parton as a person, but her music is kinda bland.

I highly respect Dolly Parton for her humanitarianism and she seems like an outstanding person. But, this didn’t work for me. To country for this rocker.

I'm all for Dolly outside of music. She sounds awesome. This album ain't it tho. Not for me thanks.
