Heartfelt
A decent album. The first song made me teary eyed. The second one made me laugh. The last one was touching. In between that the rest kinda blurred in a way that a less kind reviewer would call same-y and I would call consistent. Genuine skill and feeling and heart shine throughout, either way.
I liked this. Some really nice songwriting.
My spirit animal. Just wonderful storytelling that works for my heart and soul.
Hello Dolly, we've always liked you. More albums should be under 30 minutes, especially for this project.
Found out last night while listening to this album that it's my FIL's favourite Dolly Parton album. I liked the first song. The bass in the second song was a groove, but the rest of the album sort of all blended together. The shortness definitely helped this album, as it's not something I would put on myself.
Honestly, I thought I'd hate it more given my past with country music. But I actually didn't mind my time with it. Maybe because it's only a 27 minute album and I didn't feel like it dragged on. But each song was unique in its own right and still flowed well together. It's a well put together album.
Not a genre I enjoy, but older country is more palatable. Dolly is a treasure so I can't go lower than 3.

Absolutely amazing album probably my favorite album of hers, I've only heard like 10 to 15 out of 60 some odd. But this and *Joline* are her high water mark of what I've heard (9.93) ★★★★½

I've never been super high on Dolly Parton, but I thought this was pretty good. Favorites were probably "My Blue Tears" and "Here I Am". 3.5 stars.
Unlike Dolly’s rack there’s only proper large banger here which is the title track and it’s an incredibly blubbery one at that too. Very beautiful sweet tale and a true heart tugger. There really is not the same level of richness stitched in the other tracks but it’s still all pretty nice and pleasantish for a country album. Travelin Man definitely taken a trek to various subterranean Bob Dylan lands. 3.5 stars.

Fantastic, I had never listened to Dolly Parton before. I can hear how a lot of different artists took inspiration from her. Great sense of humor and musicality.
Dolly is just a pure joy. All of her early albums are just rife with honky tonk charm and immersive storytelling. Not only does Dolly write her own music, but she’s also one of the sweetest people walking the earth. Just one of Appalachia’s finest exports.

Dolly Parton has her own theme park. It's true, it's called Dollywood and I hear it's a lot of fun and not at all like this album.
Dolly’s amazing. And a worthy icon in her genre. That genre isn’t for me, but she deserves her status as a living legend for many reasons.
I have a habit of detracting stars from artists who are shitty people so it’s only fair I award Dolly an extra star for being a really good person.

What a refreshing album to hear in the present moment. Dolly Parton has to be one of the most down to earth, good human beings in show business. From the Coat Of Many Colors that her mother sewed her to A Better Place To Live, Dolly is genuine.
Early Morning Breeze = Best track. Otherwise, lots of slide guitar and sweet, sad Dolly.
And people say that AI does not create anything new, only remakes what people have already made. Well, I haven't heard those people complaining about Dolly Parton. Fucking hypocrites

This album was honestly okay, I was not expecting to like it too much but I was surprised by some songs. She is very wholesome
The title track is fun. Also, more rocking than most Country Albums I've listened to. Kinda gets a bit less interesting as it goes on. Not bad though.

THIS is why I love this project! Finding hidden gems like this Dolly album that I would've never listened to in a million years. Her writing is simple but earnest and heartfelt. Not to mention catchy as all get out. It's no wonder Dolly is such a nation treasure.
Very classic country, not typically something I would listen to. Dolly obviously has a great voice. The album is sonically very strong and easy on the ear. 7.1/10.

One of the goats
The opening track, and title track, of Coat Of Many Colors might be the best song ever written that falls under the genre of country music. It always makes me well up a little, and really pulls on the heartstrings. I didn’t recognise anything else on this album, but I did find myself enjoying it. Dolly has always been the anomaly in country music, because she just makes good songs. My only criticism with this is that it felt like it was finished too soon. I was left wanting more, but that’s probably the nicest criticism an album can have.
Not as good as her bluegrass stuff, but then I was always going to say that. Traditional C&W themes of please don't leave me, tempered with a bunch of religion, but it's Dolly, you know what you're gonna get. Nice though.
It's good country, but it's still very country. The start-to-Jesus time was less than a minute, the slide guitar remains slidey, and there's so many men than done her wrong that hey could start a football team. I didn't hate it, but it was just okay. Coat of Many Colours still hits hard though, no denying it.

Got to love Dolly, Travelling Man and Early Morning Breeze were the highlights of this short, enjoyable lp.
I'm pretty ignorant of country music, so this isn't strictly my thing. However, it's a solid, concise album. The songwriting is pretty strong, and I'm partial to Dolly's recognisable warbling. The music is mostly understated, with punchy bass/drum sounds when needed, and warm tones from the guitars. I haven't got much to complain about here, apart from it being outside my ballpark. 4*

In addition to dolly being an excellent person, the second half of the album is particularly great - never met a man she didn't like, early morning breeze is like a smile made into a song, here I am is massive

I was thinking this was pretty OK for its time, but the Sheriff's review made me start to think of this differently, and realize I was unintentionally grading this on an artificial curve. While this music nice in a sort of throwback, antiquated way - compared to the innovative and groundbreaking music happening all over the world at the same time, this is actually mostly just treacly sentimental bullshit. Why does almost every song reference her 'mama'? Too much mama. A friend of mine once visited Machu Picchu, the Incan ruins built in the 15th century. When I asked him about it, I expected him to be really impressed and talk about how amazing it was. Instead he shrugged and said "I don't know - the Romans built way more impressive cities 2000 years earlier." So Dolly Parton = Machu Picchu. Both are somewhat interesting in a vacuum, but considering the context and time period in which they were created, pretty underwhelming.
This album only solidifies my general attitude towards Dolly. I dont understand the love for ol’ Doll. Her music is SO lame compared to 70s rock n roll. If you gave me a set of records from the 70s and I saw her name, I would try a random record before listening to hers All that said, Traveling Man and She Never Met A Man are good.
Man, Dolly has PIPES. I’ve never listened to her stuff extensively, and this was a joy. Songs like Here I Am just blew me away – the amount of control and emotion she pulls into her songs is unbelievable. The songwriting is a bit one-note like a lot of the older music we’ve had on here, but I don’t really care. I’ll sit here and listen to this all day
Dolly is such a charmer. Rhythm section here is fun - bass nice and high in the mix. Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze, Here I Am stand out. This isn't quite Dusty or Elvis in Memphis level of greatness, but it's close.

This was cute but they mostly sounded the same to me, or sounded like other dolly songs. There were two towards the end I really liked that stood out, particularly “Here I Am” which kinda had some Janis Joplin vibes which surprised me. But yeah it was nice background music and I’m sure the lyrics are thoughtful and sweet but as we all know that isn’t usually enough to win me over anyway. *Best tracks: Here I Am, Early Morning Breeze*
Let me start by stating the obvious…Dolly Parton is a national treasure. I remember when I was a kid catching glimpses of her on the Porter Wagoner show, and thinking she was just some dumb lady wearing a platinum blonde wig. But oh, how wrong I was! Of course, since then, I’ve learned so much about her extraordinary life, her talent as a songwriter, and what an incredible human being she is. Having said that, I’ve never been a big fan of her music, but my exposure to her has been very limited. Anyway, I didn’t expect to like this album at all, but I really was pleasantly surprised. I genuinely liked all of the songs, and was especially touched by the title track. I will say I’m not crazy about her voice on this album as it sounds really youthful to me. Overall, I give this album 3 1/2 stars, but I’m going to round it up to four out of respect for Dolly. We will miss her when she’s gone.

Forgive my ignorance, but before even listening, I was surprised to read Dolly had done eight studio albums by 1971 - I didn't realise she was so active during the 60s. I've had KD Lang, Sarah Vaughan and now this on the bounce - girl power! As much as this list would like me to, I just can't warm to country music though - at least not at it's most formulaic, as this, sadly, is. Occasional more rock-orientated elements lift some of the tracks - the funky bass work on Early Morning Breeze steals the spotlight right off Dolly, for instance - but more often than not it's pedal steel, predictable stum-along chords and tales of growing up in poverty, running away with travellers and harping on to your "mama" about what a rotten time you've been having. Ultimately, just not a fan of her voice either. There'd better be no effing Kenny Rogers on this list...

I hate country music. We'll see if this changes my mind. Post-listen: Maybe I don't hate country music. But I certainly don't like it. I didn't hate this album, but I doubt I'll ever listen to it again. Also it ended very abruptly.
this might be the first Dolly I've ever fully listened to.
I didn’t love it, but I get why Dolly is known as one of the premier songwriters of her generation. The stories stand out. Maybe if I was more of a country fan I’d appreciate it more, but even so Dolly’s power as a storyteller excels.

I absolutely hate the album artwork and the title track. Gross sentimentality. But . . . the rest of the album is not bad. Standouts for me are: Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze, and Here I Am. All three of these songs sound more like Dylan’s Nashville Skyline, and less like Gatlinburg. Also, Dolly has a bit too much vibrato in her voice for my tastes.
This is fine. I think maybe in a different mood or a different day I'd appreciate this more, because the songs are perfectly constructed and her voice is great, etc. And yet I found it kind of a slog to get through this, even though it's a 30 minute album.

Coat Of Many Colors - Dolly Parton I'm not a big country music fan, so I figured there'd be a cap on how much I'd actually like this album, but Dolly's songwriting ability really made this a more enjoyable listen than I expected While the slower instrumentals of this album don't do anything for me, they set the stage for Dolly well. Her singing felt too warbled and flimsy in parts, but she does a great job of making whatever she talks about sound interesting. From her experiencing a summer breeze to losing a man to her mother, she makes her subject matter incredibly interesting to me with how poetic and heartfelt her lyrics are I don't see myself going back to this, but I'm glad I heard it. 3/5

Well I'm definitely not a country fan but I have a lot of respect for Dolly Parton. It was listenable for me for sure but I'm going to go with a 2 since country is not for me.
Country isn't a genre I enjoy. That being said, Dolly gets extra grace due to her legendary status and the amount of respect I have for her as a human. Her voice is crystal clear. It's interesting to hear her turn on and off her vibrato which can seem a bit frantic at times. It's particularly interesting to hear the blend of her straight tone and vibrato when she overdubs harmony vocals. By and large, the songs are good. As an early-70s album, it lacks many of the things that are grating about modern country. Even the cross-over songs here are more bearable because they sound like early-70s light rock. It's a solid 3 stars for me.

I love Dolly Parton as a person but I must admit...I'm not super familiar with her music, save for "Berry Pie" which I've heard several times. Outside of that, I know Dolly Parton for being one of the few leftist voices in a genre of music saturated with right-wing nonsense. With that in mind I'm excited to check this out! One of the things about listening to this record is that it has had me smiling the entire time. Dolly has a way of weaving comedy into some of her songs in a way that I just find kind of adorable, I think of the song "Traveling Man", which is a song that's not meant to be taken super seriously and I appreciate the tongue-in-cheek nature. This sort of spirit permeates the entire album in a way I appreciate. There's also moments where I feel like the lyrics can be a little deeper than you would expect them to be - I found the lyrics on "The Mystery of the Mystery". Overall, I'd say this is a really solid country album but probably not one I'll return to with much frequency. Standout tracks are: "Coat of Many Colors", "If I lose My Mind", "The Mystery of the Mystery", "A Better Place to Live".

Dolly Parton's voice is meant for AM radio. It is the epitome of that phrase "clear as a bell". I think about listening to music in my dad's store - a radio with a huge antenna that let us hear shortwave stations from Cuba, some random conversations between truckers, and a range of often static-ridden AM stations. This record sounds like those stations. I've read that the approach to recording was quite minimal, and the record does sound spare.

This isn't my favourite Dolly album- not sure if I've ever listened to this in full before. Still, it's definitely a solid entry into the classic country canon. Most of these songs (title track esp) should be sappy/cliche, but they're so earnest they just work. Travelling Man v underrated twist-ending country song IMO.

This one is hard to separate how amazing the person is from the music, in a good way. So I listened again really trying to just appreciate the music. I have never listened to a full Dolly album so it was a good treat. Her voice may not be top 10 ever, but it pretty and she engages emotion in it just right so you feel it but not too cheesy. She hits on certain elements of her life and culture in a way that is not too over the top and degrading to other. Her stories are hers and she makes them unique and different, its folksy, blue grass, country, spiritual, 70's, even a little jazzy. Just simple and beautiful.
I like this alot more than I thought I would. She mixes it up with 70's boogie honkey tonk style country (Traveling Man) to classic bluegrass (My Blue Tears), country spiritual (Mystery of the Mysteries), 70's folk (Early Morning Breeze - especially like the bass playing in this one). Good stuff!
There’s something nostalgic and comforting about this, even though I wasn’t familiar with any of these songs. A lot of them remind me of a song the sexy bear at Disney’s Country Bear Jamboree might sing. I love the heart she puts into her vocals too. The songs are simple but sweet and soulful. Very enjoyable listen!
genuinely decent album. i would not listen to it on my own and i think that’s mostly bc i don’t exactly like dolly partons voice but i do see the appeal. if i lose my mind, she never met a man, and early morning breeze were my favorites

Started off thinking this was going to be a 4 or a 5 however 3 songs in everything started to sound the same. Love the style but not much as stand out as some of her more famous hits (e.g. Jolene, I Will Always Love You). Going to check out 9 to 5 to get some more Dolly in my life!

Ik kan de pull van Dolly Parton in Amerika wel echt heel goed voorstellen, maar voor een heel album is het mij toch wel iets té corny (als in 'clichématig sentimenteel', niet als in 'maïserig', al had dat ook goed gepast). Die kant kan countrymuziek elk moment opschieten, en daar ben ik me tijdens het luisteren ook erg bewust van. Misschien dat ik daardoor niet geheel neutraal ben. Maar nogmaals, ik snap haar faam wel, en ze heeft een krachtige en karaktervolle stem. Maar ondanks dat het een kort albumpje was, kon ik daar moeilijk voor de gehele lengte van de plaat van genieten. 'Here I Am' vond ik wel geinig. 5,5/10 Highlights: Here I Am
Simpel. In (opzich) de goede zin van het woord. Dat is de basis van goede country muziek. Een simpele maar pakkende melodielijn en een zanger(es) met een mooie stem die een verhaaltje zingt. Het is veel van hetzelfde maar verveelt niet tot het einde van het album. Niet gek, maar warm werd ik er niet van hoor. 6/10 Highlights Coat of Many Colors

I do love me some Dolly. I expect she gets her ass-kicked by feminists for her “please don’t take my man/please your man” oeuvre, but she does mountain country more beautifully than anyone ever has or ever will. What it must’ve been like to hear her early on, that voice filling little churches and halls.
The cover of this always out me off for some reason but the album is quite beautiful and quintessential dolly. What a voice! I’ll be listening to this again and hope to find it on vinyl

Nice vocals. Dolly has such a beautiful voice. My favorites on this album are the first 2 songs. Still, country is not music that I like. But I see myself returning more to this than the "Trío" album, which I got before.

Superb country to listen to while contemplatively looking out of the window on a rainy day. While Dolly Parton steals the show with a fantastic vocal performance, the instrumentation is the real driving force on the album. It sounds so authentic. A good lap steel guitar never misses. Half decent, nice and short and easy enough to listen to. The shortness helps avoid any danger of the style getting too repetitive and there are some decent numbers on here. I’d think about listening again for sure - 3.5 so rounding up for a change

Post/during listening thoughts: there are a few singers in this world who they could sing me a grocery list and I’d give it a 5 on this site and dolly is one them. A lovely time
There’s an introduction to Baudrillard that, talking about the precession of the simulacrum, presents an image of visiting an American desert only to feel like you’ve already been there on account of how many western movies you’ve seen. I’m not totally convinced by the philosophical implications of that thought – nor do I think that’s what Jean was aiming at – but it’s always stuck in my mind as a sort of warning, in its own right. Don’t let the aura of a thing be eclipsed by your familiarity with its representations. So with Dolly, I try to keep it situated. I try to hear it in-itself. And I hear, in that in-itself, an album that’s plainly country; well intentioned; and full of the sort of judgemental rhetoric you’ve come to expect from America’s specific take on Protestantism. I’ve never met a Dolly I too fondly liked.
Who doesn’t like Dolly Parton? She makes great music, she’s entertaining, and she is just a good person in general. This is a good album, the tracks feel like they fit together snugly, lyrically it’s really good, i read Dolly wrote most if not all of this on her own and I must say she is skilled with the pen, she is a talented musician. I can feel the inspiration this album has on country stuff even now, sadly a good chunk of the stuff you hear learned the wrong lessons, modern country really pales in comparison to the old stuff. Hope there is more of her on this list based on her impact it wouldn’t suprise me if there is, and I’ll look forward to it. A fantastically personal dive into who Dolly is, her family around her and the experiences she’s had as her career is taking off. This is my first experience with Dolly and 70s Country and I enjoyed every second.
Enjoyed the album more than I thought I would. Lyrics were a bit too cracker barrel, but otherwise the songs were good. Traveling Man and Here I Am were highlights for me

I admire Dolly Parton a lot as a human. And objectively, this record is full of goodness. Just personally not really my jam I'm afraid, even if I do like some of the storytelling.
Good golly Miss Dolly! I don't know how I could give this less than 5 stars. What a songwriter, what a voice. I can't get over how great Coat of Many Colors (the song) is. She employs such masterful storytelling true to the heart and soul of country/ folk music. This is so easy to listen to and she packs a lot into such a short time. My favorite songs right now are the title track, Traveling Man, My Blue Tears, Early Morning Breeze, and Here I Am.

The Good: A colorful album! The Bad: Wait, it is only the coat that is colorful! The Ugly: Wait again, it seems that the colors on the coat are nothing to be happy about… Wow… Don’t know what to say, except, I repeat; Wow. And that is not meant in the WOW, that was great… more like, wow, I always knew that CaW is all about misery, yet the “lord” will come and set you free. Not my cup of tea. Not what I needed today. Musicianship on the album is tight, songwriting is tight, vibrato in the voice is a little too much to bare after a while, and one can’t but wish that we’d be sitting on a porch somewhere, chewing tobacco, while sipping some moonshine out of a clay jug and watch cousin Jethro do a jig… I think that I should give the album a second spin, but maybe not on a dreary day, when the sun isn’t coming out, and sharp objects are too close to my exposed wrists. Though gut tells me I should give this 2*, I will grant it 3* due to Dolly being Dolly!
7.5/10 This is route one country but exceptionally good at it. One thing that stands out is the voice, obviously, but especially the clarity of it. Lovely. The stories are told simply and clearly. Really well put together with some hints of folk, rock, gospel. Best: Early Morning Breeze

I am not a huge fan of country music in general. However, this album is much nicer than most modern country music, which is usually just guys with a Southern accent singing about how much they love trucks and women. Dolly Parton's songs seem more personal than shallow. I'm sure if you like country music, you'll probably enjoy this album.

Very country, very American. Not bad but not for me. Here I am is probably my favourite if I had to pick one.
As essential to any country music library as Sgt Peppers is to any rock music library. Her voice is just perfect. Essential.
First one is very sweet. Really cool bass on Traveling Man and love the TWIST. "That travelling man was a two-time lover, took my love and he took my mother!" - excellent. The rest are too country (go figure) except Early Morning Breeze which has a really cool unusual tune and great bass. The non-country parts of The Way I See You are great.
Coat of Many Colors: beautiful song and intro to the album. So poignant, made me cry. Loved the gentle guitar throughout. Travelling Man: Edgier song with a bit of humour. Imagining long car journeys and the wild west. Enjoyed it. My Blue Tears: Very nostalgic tune, loved the harmonies. She is an incredible song writer. If I Lose My Mind: crying - love a song about mother daughter relationships The Mystery Of The Mystery: not a big fan of heavy religious songs, but I appreciate the message. She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like): is the og song about pick me girls? Another sad song about Dolly chasing after a no good man who would up and leave her for another woman. STAND UP DOLLY Early Morning Breeze: Love the bass at the start of this and throughout. Nature/life appreciation. The Way I See You: Amazing love song, enjoyed the piano in this Here I Am: Felt very empowering A Better Place To Live: A very sweet finish to the album. Final thoughts: I loved this album, I love Dolly Parton. Her voice is so emotive and the nostalgic country tones forming the instrumentals on the tracks is comforting and familiar. The instrumentation leaned a little corny at times, and songs with heavy emphasis on religion sometimes make me uncomfortable. But despite this, it was a solid album I enjoyed.

Only complaint is that I wanted MORE!! Love Dolly, songs were sweet and her voice is incredible as always. Also, I'm going to find those children who made fun of her and give them the chancla treatment.
This is why Dolly Parton is that b*tch. These new girls could NEVER, they can try but they can't. I listened to this while playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and it enhanced my experience. She's a wonderful singer and writer and her songs are catchy. Fave Songs: - Travelling Man (banger) - My Blue Tears (banger!) - She Never Met A Man - The Way I See You - Here I Am (banger) - A Better Place To Live (great end!) I didn't love every song but they all sounded wonderful, it flowed so well that I felt like I was listening to several long songs. It's not that they're the same, the album just felt really good listening to it. The songs are shorter than I expected but nonetheless still very well written and well produced.

First time listener of this album. Not a country fan and don’t really like her voice. It kinda rakes at me, I’m afraid. Lyrically, it is good though and I’m glad I listened to it this once.
My queen Dolly I love her and everything she represents and she gives me a glimpse of hope of being interested in this type of music. But then again it gets to a point where how far can someone I love a personality of persuade me to like music I have never once enjoyed… I go back and forth. My queen.
Turns out that old-style country music without the pedal steel and overtly mewling vocals is something I quite like. Dolly Parton is one of the few vocalists of any genre that I actually/actively enjoy listening to - there's something so pure and clear and *unaffected* about her voice that is somehow soothing. As for the album itself I'd never heard this one - quite simple and direct which I feel like I've written about rock albums and been bored afterwards yet here it just works so well. Definite keeper. 8/10 4 stars.

Pleasant enough country album. Couldn't fully pay attention but I liked what I listened to. I'm a sucker for this era of country anyways. While this doesn't really sound innovative, it focuses on good storytelling and there's a good variation of songs on there.
This album rocks so hard. Dolly's versatility is remarkable. "Coat of Many Colors" sets the tone so well as a gut wrenching, emotional ballad. The twist at the end of "Traveling Man" is straight up gold, amazing song. "She's Never Met a Man (she doesn't like)" is another very fun song. "Here I Am" is a highlight on the second half of the record. "Mystery of the Mystery" is a little bleh, and the second half of the record doesn't live up to the first. But the one two punch of "Coat of Many Colors" and "Traveling Man" is so good this is a five star record for me, and there are a bunch of other good tracks on her. Deeply enjoyed this.

Fun album
I remember this album from Dolly Parton and its title track which I learned about from an American music course in college. It's a sweet song about accepting the best that one can accomplish with what they have, as Dolly wore that coat of rags her mother made for her. It's a nice sentimental song with a story to it, which is pretty much how the rest of the album is. Coat of Many Colors is a decent slice of country music where the warm textures provided by Dolly's voice and the session musicians are paired with lyrics of whimsy coming from an earnest place. She sang from the heart about relationships lived in such as in "If I Lose My Mind" and "She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like)", and with wide eyes about the larger world in front of her such as in "The Mystery of the Mystery" and "Early Morning Breeze". There's nothing too exciting or profound to be had here, and sometimes that's just enough for an album to satisfy. I didn't expect to give such high praise to an album so simple on the surface, but Coat of Many Colors shines in that exception.

Interesting how brief and progressive some of the songs are.
Highlights: Coat of Many Colours, Travelling Man, The Mystery of the Mystery, The Way I See You, Here I Am. In a nutshell: humble beginnings of the country queen. Country, just like blues, is a heavily diluted genre. You need to take a step back and see it in context; what it was like to hear the album in the year of its release. Dolly's songwriting, storytelling and charm is what makes her stand out. She is singing from the gut and from the heart. You do hear the pedal steel guitar and standard guitar/banjo, yet it doesn't sound hackneyed to me. I'm not a country music person, but after hearing Coat of Many Colours I will make time for Dolly. Overall: 8/10

Dolly is so sweet you can't help but love her. Her voice and storytelling is immediately endearing. "Coat of Many Colors" is a particularly gorgeous piece of songwriting. The backing band does its job well and I'm a sucker for that pedal steel (especially when it's Pete Drake!). The album is short and light as a feather, with next to no filler. It isn't super ambitious, but for me it becomes far more than the sum of its parts. Lovely stuff. I'm charmed.
Dolly’s voice is sweet and the lyrics are heartfelt. This album clocks in at an impressive 27 mins. She certainly fits a lot in. “A Better Place to Live” would be a hippie anthem were it not for the country affectation. “Coat of Many colors” has the -ability to make you cry and “here I am” is a proclamation we should all sing with Dolly’s gusto once in a while.
Country music that packs a punch. The tracks are short, sweet, and to the point. Modern-day country musicians only wish they could capture the same beautiful energy. The title track is a highlight, with succinct, peppy storytelling accompanying a simple lilting acoustic guitar line. The lyrics are really pretty. When the backing vocal harmonies come in, it's a brief moment of ascension to another plane. It's magical. Other highlights include the lighthearted Early Morning Breeze, with its subtle melodic nods to the blues, and Traveling Man, a high-energy song with a wild-west tinge. In addition, there's a good amount of album flow, of juxtaposed ups and downs between tracks that create a whole album experience, stowed in this short album of a mere 27 minutes. That's something that can't even be said for a lot of 1-hour-plus records. Admittedly, the music itself is extremely simple. Layering of vocals, strings, and acoustic guitars gives the passing appearance of complexity, but in actuality most of these songs consist of three chords – which doesn't give the ear much material to work with. I had known the name Dolly Parton for a long time. I had probably forgotten that she is a country icon. After the last country albums as part of this project, which I found surprisingly not so bad for myself, I was looking forward to this album. Well, after listening to 4 tracks, I knew again what bothers me about the genre. I don't need this southern whining. 2/5

The title track is really good, a beautiful piece of storytelling about childhood. Some of the rest is a bit bland but I do think this album showcases Dolly's stunning turn of phrase and ability to write poetic lyrics. Some very nice metaphors. To take Early Morning Breeze as another highlight, I don't find it musically that interesting but she turns a countryside morning scene into something very evocative and visual. Nice Don't think I'll go above 3*, country is not my thing and I got a little bored even in the 27 minutes. But it's pleasant enough
I wasn’t sold at first, but it only took a couple songs for me to get into it. I don’t think Dolly will join my rotation of frequently played artists, but I’d happily listen to this full album again. I’m not a big fan of the singalong-esque style that I feel pops up at times, but she avoids the repetitive cliches modern pop country is known for and has a very inoffensive sound and lyrics.
Even non-country fans can find something to love with the album. Ever poignant as always.

Dolly Parton albums tend to be, erm, front-loaded with whatever her single was at the time and a lot of filler, but this is one of the exceptions. I love the one-two punch of a mother’s love in the title track and the high camp of her mama stealing her secret boyfriend in “Traveling Man.” “The Mystery of the Mystery” is country gospel existentialism of the highest order. “Early Morning Breeze” is a spooky beauty that could have been a Lee Hazelwood cut or even a VU b-side.
I've been an admirer of Dolly Parton since my boys were very young and unsolicited children's books started arriving each month in the mail, courtesy of her and the United Way. She is a saint, yet I've never really delved into her music. Also, and I'm not an expert on country music by any stretch, but I always felt like Dolly Parton was considered more of a novelty and overlooked in favor of a mostly male cohort (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Jones, etc.) but also Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. Coat of Many Colors is a wonderful listen front to back, fully of life and heartache. Early Morning Breeze lilts on a pretty melody, the harmonizing on My Blue Tears is lovely and the storytelling on songs like Traveling Man and She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like) embody what makes this era of country music so great. Also, the musicianship and production on this album are first rate.
Album is over before you know it but it's a pleasant listen.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never sat down and listened to one of Dolly Parton's records from beginning to end. She's a great singer, a brilliant songwriter, and (afaict) a class act. Dolly is a Real One.

As Shirley would say, "That's nice!" Not a country music fan, but this was pleasant without being too cloying, and Dolly is a wonderful human (antidote to the Kanye/Morrissey/Clapton types).
Great storytelling as usual for Dolly, nice simple country with great production. Only knew the title track, the others seemed more like b-sides but were fine.
Pretty good overall, esp if you are okay with Dolly's distinctive voice. I'm partial to her just because she's Dolly Parton, but don't think I'll be re-listening to this one.
Honestly just a nice little country album. Doesn't overstay its welcome, nor does it cheesy or overly patriotic like a lot of country does. Nothing mind blowing, but it's very solid.

Dolly is a country legend. I don't like much country but this was good.
Man I love old country and Dolly Parton is a legend. This album has some really solid songs on it. I especially loved Early Morning Breeze. It sounded like it could have been a Grateful Dead song and the bass line especially felt like a Phil Lesh bass line to me.
What a fun record. Its self reflective, has great storytelling and excellent song writing. I like that she is homaging and leaning into the Appalachian style of singing and music, but also adding in elements of rockabilly and outlaw country. I love how honest and earnest her sound is. Dolly Parton is an American treasure.

I grew up listening to all the old school country acts, but never fully appreciated them because they weren't "cool." Boy, was I wrong. This album is Dolly in her prime, singing about heartbreak, and kindness, and love. My goodness, she is a treasure. I love these lyrics in A Better Place To Live. This world certainly would be a better place to live if we followed Dolly's advice. And if we'd love one another instead of finding faults We could afford the price of peace, love is all it costs Oh wouldn't it be great to live and sing in harmony Everybody take your brother's hand and sing along with me

There's some solid songs on here, and overall no complaints, but not really anything that made me want to listen again.
Dolly paints vivid pictures. These songs feel like journal entries. She reminds me of Future.
This album is quite a roller-coaster thematically- poverty, prosaic and innocent delights, insecurities and loyalties in love, salacious and inappropriate sexual dynamics, mother-daughter bond...oh my. These complex issues and emotions are given clarity by by rather simplistic lyrics. Parton is not Dylan or Swift but an excellent narrator nonetheless. Melodically the album is consistent with enough variations in styles, moods and rhytms to make it engaging and enjoyable.

This album fits the formula that I really dislike but somehow it works. Each song sounds the same and honestly from what I can tell, the stories are almost the same as well. But somehow Dolly makes this work. She keeps you wanting to hear what’s next. This album does sound more like a folk album than country. Marvelous album. The songs are well written and even better executed. The band is incredible and Dolly is Dolly, nuff said there. AND it's just under half an hour, perfect amount of time but I still yearn for more
