Reviews (page 10 of 12)

A good album. Limited themes overall, but decent.

Not bad

Interesting

Early morning breeze

Honest and earnest songs of being loved. It is nice to hear something heartfelt for a change.

Enjoyed this one. Favorite: title track

Cute tunes reminiscent of Midwestern summer nights. Dolly Parton is a great singer, but she has put it to better use elsewhere.

Enjoyable album. Not sure I'd consider it one of Dolly Parton's best, but that doesn't mean it isn't good. "Coat of Many Colors" and "Traveling Man" were probably my favorite songs. Given some of the albums I've listened to on this list lately, I was appreciative of the short length of both the songs and the album overall.

is it weird that i prefer the music directly inspired by this than this itself

A great country musician and songwriter. Not her best work.

Love Dolly. Great songs and storytelling. Her voice can resemble a goat or sheep, but I’ll forgive it.

I've never listened to a full Dolly album before, and reading a little history about this surprises me: I had no idea she started as a backup singer and always thought she was the solo powerhouse that she is now from the beginning! This is a decent collection of tracks, but they don't seem to flow together as a cohesive album. It goes from heartfelt quasi-biographical number to a fictional antecdote about Stacey's Mom from another perspective.

At least they featured her voice in the music and didn’t drown it out with the band. I gave it a 3-star due to the fact that it was listenable even though not my favorite music

Alright

1. Awesome opening track - really loved the story 2. Not mama running off with the traveling man! 3. The harmonies go crazy on this track, and love the strings on the second verse. 4. Man this is a sad song about domestic abuse. 5. Kinda dipping for me here. Dolly’s voice is incredible but the instrumental is a bit boring to me 6. Alright this is why I don’t listen to a lot of country. The instrumentals all start to sound the same. There is a nice piano additional on the second verse tho. and again Dolly’s voice is incredible 7. The bass intro is a nice change of pace. I’m fucking with this song heavy already 8. Man we riding. This song is beautiful as fuck. 9. Mad twangy. Dolly is swinging. This album kinda dipped for me in the middle but it came back 10. Damn and finishing with an anthem. Solid 8/10

Cinematic. My favorite tracks: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze, The Way I See You, Here I Am

Bit old timey for my taste, but good songs

There’s something very appealing about classic country music - it’s simple in its narratives and displays unpretentious but polished vocals and instrumentation. This is a really good example of that. It’s a solid collection of songs sung by a wonder of a performer. And I near always enjoy hearing lap-steel guitar on a track. While missing some of the poetry and darkness that can be found in the genre, this still is not too bad. Fave track: Here I Am

Fantastic record. Definitely plan to listen to this again and take-in all the lyrics.

A good album. Country is not my favorite, but Dolly can sing.

Country. Dolly's an icon but the genre has never been my favorite

I admire many things about Dolly Parton, like her guitar playing and songwriting. Her voice is not one of them. At least not on this album. Warbly? Vibrato?

Everybody loves Dolly

Really enjoy getting to explore these classic country albums that I never would have touched otherwise. Dolly's voice is beautiful on this album, and it's the perfect length for songs that are all pretty similar to each other. I enjoyed the rock elements I heard in Traveling Man, and the message in Coat of Many Colors is a fantastic one. Favorite track: Coat of Many Colors

I recognize the quality and skill here, but this music is not for me. I prefer later, Poppier, less country Dolly.

This is why I love this platform. Both an artist and genre I wouldn’t ever go near. Enjoyed listening to it! There are a few tracks id listen to again. Maybe not the whole album - country just isn’t really my thing. But I’ve got a whole new appreciation for Dolly the songwriter! Lovely stuff!

not rly for me but her voice is so sweet and i just love her???

Love 70s country, not a huge fan of Dolly but this is good :)

Yeah, nice easy-listening country affair. Kind of washed over me a bit, but definitely some lovely stuff on here. Dig the production too.

Few really good classics

Really enjoyed the first two tracks. After that it felt very repetitive and had the “typical” country sound. Not sure what it is about that sound that I get tired of so quickly.

Not so much 🤮

I knew (and liked) the first song, I got through the whole album, Dolly is a great singer and the album wasn't bad. If this is your kind of music, it has been performed well and I would recommend it. If you do not like country, then I would doubt it would be particularly interesting. 5/10.

Great record. Admittedly I haven't sat down and listened to a lot of Dolly Parton but she's been getting credit for a ton of great things she's been doing for society / good causes and I'm really glad to be listening to this today. I don't always like country in a general sense but it's nice to hear a record every now and then that reminds me that there is quality music out there in every genre. Nice 3/5 for me.

The good kind of country music

Clean as a bell, charming as hell, Dolly Parton brings gives that country style some real verve. I'm not sure I loved the album but who doesn't love Dolly?

Dolly is great, I am not a crazy fan though

Sweet but hip Grandma sitting on the wrap around porch telling stories and vibing. Classic country narrative Music but Dolly has a signature voice. I appreciate the work… for others

7/10 country, upbeay, bien plaisant a ecouter.

Eh I don’t really care for dolly partons music to be completely honest. 3/5

it was quite alright but not necessarily my cup of tea but to be fair i dont drink tea

Tja, hoe zullen we dit noemen? Country-smartlappen? Edelkitsch?

Traveling Man is de positieve uitzondering.

Dolly sings well, not too much vibrato. Lovely tunes.

An old-timey charmer. A bit preachy in places but plenty of fun songs too.

Not something I would have ever thought to listen to. Not my thing, but its great. Short and punchy. Some of the ballads remind be of the late 60s Beegees ballads. either a very high 3 or just scrapping a 4

I don't like country, but Dolly's voice is comforting and every song felt so incredibly genuine

Good album, short, sweet, I like the songwriting, nothing really grabbed me, 3/5

Country. Ni fu ni fa.

I found this to be enjoyable, if a bit dull in places. Parton’s voice is meant to carry the album, and some of the instrumentals feel a bit lackluster as a result. That being said, Dolly’s genuine songwriting and heart shine through in the lyricism, and while she can veer into cheese territory sometimes there were also a few lines that warmed my cold, dead heart

too country for my taste, but much respect.

More interesting than I expected, some decent songs

Oh, nice Dolly. Wish this was the album with Jolean, but I'll take it. This is good, and while I do enjoy this. It is a bit slow for my taste. The fast/upbeat songs are great, but the slower songs aren't really my speed. Dolly has a really distinct and soothing voice though; I'll give her that. Some of the guitar parts in some of these songs sound like they would fit in "Hawian" or SpongeBob music. I really appreciate how concise the album is though. It isn't too short nor too long at a cool 27 minutes 21 seconds. Overall pretty good, but I didn't vibe with it as much as I would like. A strong 3/5

it was fine. i feel like she uses a little vibrato literally all the time which is annoying. i bet molly tuttle is a big dolly parton fan

Titelsong is zeer mooi.

I've always thought Dolly was a little over-rated (and I still do), but I liked this more than expected. She's got a nice enough voice, but, for example, when she sings on Trio with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, it's the least pretty of the three. I feel that half of Dolly's fame is her personality and her time in front of the camera, rather than her actual music. Her music is good, but generally not great. But I liked this more than expected. I'll give it 3 1/2 stars. Rounding down because it doesn't belong with a lot of 4 star albums.

Dolly Parton is a national treasure and this album proves it. While I'm not much of country fan I really like this album. Dolly's storytelling is stellar same as her vocal chops.

Coat of Many Colors is the eighth solo album by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. This is one of her best country albums and is seen by many critics as the pinnacle of her career. The title track has been cited as Parton's favorite track she has written. This was a beautiful album of Nashville country tunes combined with Parton's soothing singing. I hadn't heard much of Dolly Parton's music until this album, and it proved to me that she is a talented singer-songwriter indeed. Country music lovers should enjoy this album a lot.

Damn Dolly's mom is a ho. Half spongebob music half sleepy time country. Definitely not my thing. Score: 50 Art: 40

It's honestly pretty boring, but the songwriting is strong and Dolly is such a wonderful talent and exceptional person.

It was alright - decent but repetitive songs. Lots of respect for Dolly but nothing here was her best

Dolly kinda snapped

Musik man blir glad av.

She really is country royalty and this was an album I didn't dislike at all.

Very easy to like Dolly’s voice. The arrangements and ensemble on older country music like this never seems to fail. Almost gave it a full extra star for the ever-tasteful pedal steel guitar throughout. Great vocals as always from her as well.

Very nice. Classic Country

You listen to this album and come away with a good understanding of why Dolly Parton is a musical legend. This is the essence of country music, and it's a shame that modern opinion from most people (including myself) has been soured by the uninspired, pop-country thing that has become super popular.

This is a pretty light three, but I just can't give it a two. I don't really like country, but this is tolerable. I was more interested in the lyrics than the music a lot of the time. There's certainly some interesting stories going on in these songs. My favourite song was Traveling Man.

It passed without incident. But I haven't rushed out to buy boots and a stetson.

Better than expected but country isn’t really my thing

It was sound. Something about the wishy washy country guitar that I enjoy. Doesn’t get added to the rotation. Sorry, Doll x

I like Dolly Parton but I'm not sure she is for me on an album length. It's fine background music though.

Not a huge country fan, particularly of this, lyrics felt too cheesy

Sweet music, good album

It’s a country album.

When I was growing up, this was what country music sounded like and I have to admit I'm not a fan, though Dolly makes it a little more tolerable. Parton is now in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of fame, but don't be fooled, there is NO rock and/roll on this record! The album itself is listenable and there are some worthwhile songs on here, but the genre generally is miserable and avoidable, at least for my tastes. Sorry Dolly!

Title track is perhaps her best song (according to myself and Parton herself). Travelling man is a fun story, the rest is pretty good but doesn’t reach the height of the title track.

Old country is not my thing; however, with Dolly Parton there’s always this sort of conexión. When I hear her voice I feel like a kid in his grandparents house a Sunday morning. It’s weird because that didn’t happen. I am now even from the US and my grandparents did not speak English or listen to country. I did not frequent that house either. So, it’s like yearning a past I did not have. Well, this is a nice collection of Dolly’s songs.

Not generally my thing, but Dolly is a goddamned delight. Her positivity on this is as infectious as it is relentless.

Weak three, strong two. The first song was a slap, but the rest is meh. Not a Dolly fan, but I appreciate her.

classic dolly parton, her voice just isnt for me. good songs liked a few

I like Dolly Parton but not this album.

She is iconic but not found any country music I liked...also WTF was Traveling Man

This was fun, I might come back to this. Probably a bit mood dependent, but you can certainly hear the songwriting chops. 3.5 rounded down.

Her voice is great and while this is not my style of music, it was still a fun listen.

There are many things Dolly does in her music that I’d not forgive in others, because others aren’t Dolly. Her wide-eyed optimism and her super-sweet music suits her wholesome nature, but this album isn’t all tiptoeing through the tulips: she brings some of that sassy country storytelling, too, especially when she complains about her mother stealing her boyfriend!

I’m a tough sell on most post-50s/60s country music, and I liked this quite a bit

Not my thing, but the bassist and drummers are very impressive. couple of great songs, mostly mediocre songs.

Country. Ni fu ni fa.

It’s fine. 3.5/5

This is a good country record and over time I’ve come to appreciate Dolly Parton. That said, not sure why it makes the list.

Great small length album... It is country and somehow the voice and lyrics really bring something to the album.. Nothing too particular but yet something special when hearing it. Good road trip vibe. Decent 3/5

p238 .1971. 3 stars Quality country singer/song writer, clean production and doesn't outstay its welcome. Points deducted for occasionally straying into saccharine so sweet it can strip the enamel from your teeth.

a classic country album, shows why dolly is the icon she is today

Decent listen

Decent country music, elevated to a 3 star by a couple of great songs at the start. And people say she’s just a big set of tits.

Good Album, Dolly is a legend.

The main song is nice and sticks in the mind. The rest of the album instead didn't pick any chord

Prefs : Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, My Blue Tears, Early Morning Breeze Moins pref: The Way I See You

Trur da va heilt greit, huske kje

What makes this album great is that it's not exactly country. Obviously, you can hear the recognizable country techniques in each song but they have a sunshine pop feel to them like the Carpenters, with pictures of butterflies of rainbows. She has a light and sweet voice, and the peace-like instrumentation and gospel back vocals compliment her well. Especially a fan of the bass lines. This is Dolly at her most creative. There are plenty of 60s and 70s pop albums that try to do the same and always come off as boring and lame, appealing only to Sunday church children. Not here. This is for everyone. I'm not saying there are bangers, and nothing blows me away. In fact, there's a few songs I dislike like "A Better Place to Live." But for what it does, it does it well. Coming under a half hour, I can get through the whole thing before getting antsy. And despite hating country, I have reason to revisit this record that little others of its kind could offer me. Favorites: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze, The Way I See You

Super high pitched voice but some good songwriting

A good listen

Oh Dolly, we love you. This was a classic album I've never heard. Always love a good country tune and Dolly is one of the greats. Would I listen again? No, but if these songs came on the radio I'd happily let them play.

Nice! I assumed this was very early, young Dolly, it sounds that way. She sounds very bright eyed and cheery, at least sonically (lyrics aren't so rosy at times). But apparently this was eight or so albums deep into her career, I'm impressed! Plenty of gas in the tank. Looking through her history, this seems like it was something of a breakout, or turning point, where she made something really special on her own after years of bouncing in and out of some duet albums. I'm always game for good country albums, and this is a good one. I've not been exposed to much Dolly aside from "Jolene" of course, and I can hear from this why she's regarded highly: she just does the damn thing very competently, very well. She's got a great voice and energy for classic country tunes. I wouldn't mind more from Mrs. Parton, especially if it means we get "Jolene" somewhere down the road. Favorite tracks: Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze, The Way I See You, A Better Place to Live. Album art: I assume that's YOUNG young Dolly, wearing the titular coat of many colors that her mom patched together. Dig the almost Norman Rockwell style art, really works for an album like this. 3.5/5

really short old fashion country

An easy listen. 6/10

Sweet 70's country-pop record. I prefer the more upbeat songs, as some of the slower ones kinda bore me (personal preference). Favourite songs are Coat of Many Colors (fav), Traveling Man (love the storytelling), If I Lose My Mind, and A Better Place to Live. I really like the melodies in these songs and Dolly Parton's voice is so amazing and unique, especially for her genre.

I guess I like this about as much as the Trio album the other day. That seemed more focused on sweet, syrupy harmonies though, whereas solid songwriting is a bit more to the fore here, and I respect that.

I think lyrically and musically it was a good album; although I’m not a huge fan of Dolly Parton’s singing.

Dolly Parton is a treasure and has a gift for songwriting, but there was some cheesy inspirational stuff on this album.

Hmm. The recording was first rate. Musicianship first rate. Just not a fan of the material.

Decent. Old bug good.

The opening 15 seconds of here i am are powerful enough to move this album from a 2 to a 3 for me. There are some beautiful and funny songs on the rest of the album, but it’s uneven. 3/5

not bag

I never knew Dolly's young voice! A delight!

Liked the guitar at points, pleasant, but not a standout.

This was...fine. I enjoyed the music okay, but it sounded a little too basic country-y for me, I think.

Found this fairly relaxing and enjoyable.

Wistful happy old school twangs with a legendary voice. Good for the background

The title song was the only real stand out. Still a pleasant listen but it didn’t really blow me away. 3.5 stars

3/10, 30%

Not my favorite Dolly album but it was ok

Beautiful singing of course, loved the title track and a couple others. It was a bit saccharine as a whole album for me, but it was short enough to not wear me out too bad either.

Some delightful Dolly

A great sign of things to come for Dolly Parton. Most of the songs felt more like sketches, presenting a lyrical idea of situation but leaving me waiting for more on the theme. And perhaps it's the sound of country twang: it feels from an older age than 1971 (unlike many other albums of the same year like Tapestry or Blue).

I know her most famous hits but I have not listened to an entire dolly Parton album before today. I do know that she is an amazing and generous person. I love her voice and the songs are fascinating. I hope more of her albums are on this list as I feel like this might not be her best album overall. Enjoyable none the less.

I'm not meant to like this, it has so many things that instantly turn me off. However, I smiled my way through the whole thing. It's like someone reading particularly tuneful stories to me, and there's plenty of subtle humour hidden in the lyrics to keep me entertained. A pleasant surprise from one of the albums I've been dreading having to listen to.

My first Dolly Parton record. The title track, "The Mystery of the Mystery," and "Early Morning Breeze" were my fave tracks.

The Queen of Country shows off her songwriting chops. It's Dolly, right? She's worth respect even if you don't like her music. And just like her, she keeps the tracks short and sweet. Best Tracks: Coat of Many Colors; Early Morning Breeze; Here I Am

The first two tracks set a high bar for for the album, but the next 8 do not deliver, falling into sentimental country cliches. That said, only Dolly Parton could start out with a song about a poor girl's biblical coat of many colors made from rags, follow it up with a song about a two-timing traveling salesman, and feel completely genuine the entire time. Dolly is singular; a one of a kind treasure. But this album is just pretty good.

I am not so familiar with country music but I liked it.

Nice. Don't really have much to say about it other than that.

Nice, but just nice.

Beetje kort, Dolly.

The title track is pretty good, but the rest just feel ok to me. There are better Parton albums and songs IMO.

Struggle to fairly rate given how far out of genre this is.

Country. One on my least liked genres but hey open minded eh.... (also DP is just great as a person) Anyway kicks off with 2 bangers, the title track and Traveling man. Starts to drip into inaneness after. At least the songs are sort and the whole album is lass than 30 min. Ok picks up in the second half when it loses some the country tropes. ( Liked Here I am) Gonna be a 3

I have heard individual tracks from Dolly over the years, but Coat of Many Colors is the first time I've listened to a whole album. The title track was the only song I was familiar with. "Coat of Many Colors" and "The Way I See You" were the tracks that called to my attention as I was listening. Overall I was surpriesed how consistent her voice and songwriting have been over the years. The album is not typical of the music I would listen to, but it was a good album.

Nice one Dolly. Not for me but did enjoy Coat of Many Colors and Traveling Man

Dolly Parton is one of those artists I want to like. I like her story and the title track is sweet and full of love. I just can't get into her but I also can't give her less than a 3.

I'm impressed that Dolly wrote most of the songs on the album. I like the one where she tells her mother that her husband makes her have sex with other men. Pretty brave for 1971. She had a great, raw voice in those early days. The title track I am not so fond of, but the story behind behind it makes it legit.

Short and sweet. Beautiful vocals, with songwriting that must have stood out starkly against mainstream country at the time. The songs are a nice mix of the sweetly personal and even the surprisingly funny. On the whole, most of the songs never quite reach the quality of the album's title song, but this is still a great album that's a pleasure to listen to. Fave Songs: Coat of Many Colors, My Blue Tears, The Way I See You, Here I Am, She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like)

Speravo meglio.

I'm not a fan of Country but Dolly's storytelling abilities are fine, painting vivid pictures of tales of woe and betrayal

Sentimental yet down to earth. The most easy-listen type of country music. Pretty chill.

Hmm, kyl tämmönen klassinen country toimii ihan jees. Selvästi Dollyn ääni kuin luotu tähän genreen. Ja simppeliin musaan sopiva levyn pituus.

Oli yllättävän hyvä! Travelling Man varsinkin hyvä.

Felt like a pretty sleepy Dolly Parton album

Really pretty folk country gospel album

Good collection of Dolly songs I hadn’t heard, from back when country didn’t mean a bigger truck and bragging about how rustic you are.

It's fine

Average easy listen.

Very warm and intimate country by Dolly here. I don't think musically she ever really broke the mold, but she makes up for that by having really relatable lyrics, cosy music and a sparkling vocal performance.

ara sooo

Dolly's writing is very good and all-star backup musicians. But I like Dolly in smaller portions than an entire album.

It’s good. It’s very country. It’s very Dolly. It’s very short.

It’s Dolly. She’ll never fail you but you also have to be in the right mood to listen to her

okay, didn't knock my socks off.

Country music isn't my thing but Dolly Parton is an international treasure.

I like to hear her voice now and again. I think the length of the songs and album are the right amount. None of the songs on this particular album are very memorable for me.

Bijzonder? Eerder schattig…

yeah samey again liked at first then sounded basically the same jolly banjo

Good album. 2nd Listen for me. Some of the songs are starting to grow on me.

Terrifying album cover. Never judge, etc. That girl has lungs on her. Tremendous vocal delivery, honest and aware of the campness of it all. There's a very fine whiff of the '71 counter culture breezing in.

Interesting - pure country - not quite my thing but appreciated it nonetheless

Marglaga listamaður. Gott content

Country clássico no timbre feminino

Dolly is an undeniable force of nature. She has aged with grace and poise and power. In some ways, that makes this 3-star review hard to give. But it's possible to utterly adore a person for who they are, deeply respect their accomplishments, and still not be a fan of their work. Unfortunately, that's where I am with this album. Dolly, I love ya, but this album is fairly pedestrian, steel-guitar-soaked, hillbilly country. Except for "Here I Am" - that song is amazing. On the second to last track, Dolly finally slips the lead and lets loose with the full force of her voice and the result is fantastic.

Dolly is good.

Not such a fan of most Country Music, but the lyrics to this album are great. Dolly has always been a great human being as well.

Lovely

Really fresh and funny and a little melanchonic.

Stand out bass playing on Travelling man and Early morning breeze. Very pleasant country album, albeit mainstream.

Very good

Very quaint. The song "Travelling Man" is really funny

gråvigt.

not cup of my tea, ma piace sicuramente agli amanti del genere.

For simpel og piget og kristen

Country. Suave y tranquilo.

It’s a whoooooole lot of country.

Just like Dolly, short, bold and pretty giving. Too brief for a Friday album.

fine album, but not very spectacular for me

Here we have Dolly Parton bringing her distinctive voice to the dominant folk country of the early 1970s. This was a pretty standard 70s folk album and is nowhere near Dolly's best but it still shows off her musical talent. Fav song: Here I Am

Dolly Parton has a beautiful voice. Good listen, couple of good tracks with great bass lines.

i was expecting a full album of rootin tootin cowboy boots and my daddy left when i was 4 type nonsense but i was pleasantly surprised. about half of this was actually listenable. who knew Dolly Parton started life off as a young boy?

Where to start with this? Dolly is my dream girl. I'd listen to her telling me that I'm a piece of shit all year and still adore her. She has very neat pubic hair. Very neat.

Seems good

not my thing - it's fine

Not my favorite genre, but you have to like Dolly Parton. Old country is so much better than new "pop" country.

Pretty standard country really.

I expected to hate it and didn't so i guess that's a complement.

I don't like country music so much

Meh, schyssta pattar dock

not bad, plus she has huge boobs!

Bueno, no mi estilo

She's obviously great and one of the more tolerable country artists, but can't say anything excited me much after Coat Of Many Colors. These albums based around big songs would all fare better if they embedded that song further down Saved: Coat Of Many Colors*

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Traveling Man, My Blue Tears, Here I Am, A Better Place To Live Cutting Edge: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze Overall Notes: Good old fashioned country music. 3.5 rounded to a 3 because it's nothing I haven't heard before. Still enjoyable though. Extra points for not having any problematic themes or lyrics.

"That one is only poor only if they choose to be" solid 3

I'm sure it would grow on me with repeated listens. I went back and listened to 3 songs on the back half, Early Morning Breeze & the way I see you - all brilliant. I found the songs with the most interesting stories (if I lose my mind, she never met...) to be a little dull musically.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: coat of many colors, travelling man, here I am

Good stuff

Pretty dece

Not my usual genre of music, but I enjoyed it.

Great voice!

bra skiva :D stark 3a

Everyone loves Dolly! Title track is a winner, and the rest is classic Dolly Parton 70s country crooning. I was struck by the transition of Dolly’s mom character from the first to second song. She first is the caring mother sewing rags into love, and by the end of the next song, mom has run off with her new boyfriend. Country music😜.

Beautiful uplifting country record. Title song an all-time classic; rest of them light and positive tracks backed with a great Nashville band

My Blue Tears" Released: June 14, 1971 "Coat of Many Colors" Released: September 27, 1971

Short album, Tall tunes

A bit country-ish for my tastes, but I love and admire Dolly Parton. She has a great voice and writes nice, wholesome, simple songs. 3 stars.

Really good, just not for me

I wish I liked this more than I do. Very outmoded country.

I can see why she is popular but this was way too country for me. 2.5

Dolly Parton- Coat of Many Colors (1971) Very much what you would expect with Dolly Parton. Heavy on the country twang sound i.e. picking banjos, harpsichord, etc. I do weirdly get small hints of soul tied in as well. Different messages in the album, ranging from why we must leave this earth to women cheating on men. Very different stories. I went in with an open mind, and while I respect Dolly Parton for what she has done, her music isn't something I align with unfortunately. Album Rank: 5.1 Favorite Song: Traveling Man

I'm sorry. I know Dolly is super loved and adored. I love her too, I swear! I just really really don't like most of her music.

It's fine, I guess? Not her best, not bad or anything. Didn't feel it was worth being on a "listen before you die" kind of list.

Decent, not the best Dolly album but has a couple good tracks. Below average overall though.

Y a mí me generan poco. 3/10

Good but sounds the same throughout. I appreciate her song writing ability and her connection with her fans. 4/10 Top song Coat of many colors

It's easy to like Dolly and all that, but ... did not like this album. Found it boring and repeatedly skipped ahead to the next track when a song dragged and became tedious. Disappointing.

J'aime pas

It's not you, Dolly, it's me. This genre and this kind of simple, sweet music holds zero appeal to me and absolutely bores me. Honestly, it's difficult to pay close attention to it because my brain inevitably wanders on to something else more complex or interesting while it's playing. I liked a few of the songs, but it's just something I will never seek out to listen to again.

Don't enjoy country.

Enjoyed it, don't think it'll be something I go back to though

Dolly is great but this kind of music is just not for me.

Dolly Parton is a legend who should be on this list as a representative of the genre. She's written a few great songs and is a great entertainer. But I don't understand why this album is so highly regarded. The songs are very simple (almost like children's songs) with simple stories. Her voice, while recognizable, is thin especially compared to Linda Ronstadt on Trio.

Pleasant but unremarkable

Ugh. More country. At least it's a classic artist. Let's see...... Nope. Out of respect for DP, I'll double my expected rating.

It's nice, but not exciting or doing anything terribly new or interesting

not my vibe, but i think it sounds like an afternoon at the suburbs in the US must feel like

dolly's voice is soooo pretty but this popified country stuff is just so not for me. the forced rhyming in travelin man made me question the sincerity of this project as a whole. i guess i have to put dolly in a similar state of regard as jimmy buffet where i admire the branding, entrepreneurship, and star power of the artist but cant really listen to much of their musical output. thank you miss parton for jolene, the less good covid vaccine, and trixie mattel. fav track here i am

Slatka Dolly!

sorry. literally was surprised when i realised it was over because it had become such background noise to me. did make me think about country sort of being one of the peak story-telling genres though

Nothing really stood out to me tbh but Dolly Parton has a nice voice. I guess if I had to pick a top song, maybe Here I Am? It’s the only one that sounded slightly different to the rest. But Id zone out a little and zone back in. Sounded almost like 1 continuous 30 minute song rather than an album. Maybe I might like something else on her discography because like I said, I think she can sing. But this album was kind of boring. Somewhat enjoyable listen, 2/5 stars.

Yep that's Dolly Parton for sure

This is good, but not for me. I did like the title track.

In terms of production, it's a straightforward old school country album, but for some reason Dolly Parton's singing is very grating.

Too country for me. But I respect Dolly Parton’s fight against misinformation and promotion of public health.

This was little too twee for me

throw back to when women couldnt leave the kitchen

good song but hobestly not my type of songs

Big fan of Dolly Parton as a person from what media I’ve seen with her in it, she seems extremely authentic and strong and talented. But i don’t like this type of music unfortunately. It’s got that country-American vibe that i just can’t seem to acquire the taste for. I enjoyed the lyricsism and the songs are all really cohesivo and clearly of good quality, but I wouldn’t listen to any of them on my own time.

Dolly has amazing vocals but didn't like this album

A bit depressing if you listen to the lyrics. The music is pretty boring though

No fav song

Yeah, whatever. I guess it sounds fine but it isn't much and am glad it wasn't that long. Don't think it should be in here though.

Were I born in US in 50s, I'd probably react differently, but today for me it's a complete miss. Dated poorly and has little to no relevance outside of its homebase. Right after this album ended, Spotify switched me to Joni Mitchell's Blue, issued on the same year, part of the same 1001 list, and boy that work is soooo much better! Cheers Dolly, I have places to be.

just don't really care for the genre Will I listen to again: 0%

Album #136 Dolly Parton: Coat Of Many Colors Second Dolly Parton album this week, and unfortunately, both were quite underwhelming. After not enjoying Trio that much, I was skeptical going into this one. Coat of Many Colours has a few things going for it: for one, the title track, which is definitely the best song between both albums, and second, the length, which, being under thirty minutes, should ensure that it doesn’t drag. However, somehow, I still found myself waiting for it to be over. The highs on this album are quite nice; however, the filler is just mind-numbing. I also don’t resonate at all with Dolly’s country twang and vocabulary; it just sounds grating over a full album. I think if I were to listen to a Dolly Parton’s greatest hits album, I would probably enjoy myself, but as far as her studio work goes, there is just too much mid. Best Songs: Coat of Many Colors, Here I Am, Early Morning Breeze Worst Song: The Way I See You Score out of 10: 5.5

I prefer 'new-school' alt-country music to the 'original' 4/10 Will I add this album to my library? no

Agreed-- appreciating country music is an uphill battle for me as well. This album is fine -- it's well performed. It's clear Parton was going for an upbeat cheerful vibe, and she accomplishes that. I do have a hard time listening to her voice as well -- she has this fast artificial sounding vibrato that is hard to get past. Given that Parton is a great philanthropist and champion of marginalized people, I really wanted to like this more than I did.

Dolly actually does my favorite country song (of which I don't like many) but I didn't like this album much at all. It felt whiney and awful. Granted, country has to be my least favorite genre so it's already fighting an uphill battle for me

Coat of Many colors

This felt like nursery rhymes

My favorite Dolly genre is bluegrass. Rather primitive by her later standard.

Atmosfera country e testi malinconici e allo stesso tempo freschi. Brano migliore: The way I see you

80% schlock, 20% insightful. But my own personal biases keep me from enjoying the 20%, as I find Dolly’s voice (tone, vibrato, hokey accent) like nails on a chalk board.

Love Dolly but this was boring

Not my style, was still enjoyable I guess, just not something I’ll probably ever return to

not my thing ma carino

De loin pas son meilleur album 2.5+/5

it sounded okay

Still don't like country music

Not my vibe but still good music

Country singing with dolly parton. Is there anything else to say?

Enjoyed this more than I expected. Probably wouldn't rush to listen again, but a few good songs on here

We like a bit of Dolly Parton in our house. Couple of good ones on here. 2.5

Seriously? That was my first thought, followed by honestly RGP what are you playing at now…but actually having now listened this was not as abjectly terrible as I’d assumed it would be, towards the bottom end of the 2 stars but 2 stars nonetheless.

Country’s calm… maybe a little too calm.

Нет

Better than the other country we've had on this list. Still not really a fan of the genre though. Sorry Dolly.

This was good for what it is. Not exactly in my wheelhouse, but did what it was supposed to do. Not really much more to add. Short at 28 minutes, and some dubious fade outs.

I'm not a Dolly Parton fan.

A jolly old lady is our Dolly, a manufactured saccharine product that looks like an extra from 'Valley of the Dolls' but she knows her audience I guess and she plays to them with an almost naive sincerity that makes you question whether she is actually authentic at all. I've seen her interviews and she comes across as she does in her songs and it's hard to believe that people like her exist but she insists they do and I have to believe it because she says it without a hint of irony. Not my bag but she is an intriguing enigma to me all the same. Bubble gum country that has a heart of gold wrestling with the big questions in a practical twee kind of philosophical way ('The Mystery of the Mystery') but struts a chest that says 'Here I am'. I am not a fan of the music but I don't hate it either, even though I think I should. I can't imagine her on a horse though...

No me disgusto.
