Reviews (page 9 of 12)

It's country music.

Nie mam zbyt wiele do powiedzenia, odsyłam do innych recek Dolly Parton. It's foin.

Here I am stricken with the flu, or something close to it, and today's album is a country one--by none other than Dolly Parton in an era earlier than "Jolene", at least if I followed all of this correctly. Country is far from being my favorite genre, and in the haze I'm in, it's hard for me to find redeeming features to this apparently by-the-numbers record (always preferred outlaw country and honky tonk anyway). The opening title track is pretty enough, but Dolly's high-pitch rant on the livelier second track already gets on my nerves. More of the same after that. "The Mystery Of The Mystery" has strangely metaphysical lyrics, the cutesy yet groovy "Early Morning Breeze" displays strangely original instrumentation, not owing much to C&W, there is quite an original piano part on "The Way I See You", and "Here I Am" has a memorable chorus with soulful background vocals typical of the early seventies. Closer "A Better Place To Live" returns to the annoyingly predictable country shenanigans of the first side, unfortunately.ooks like the second side is whole different album, and honestly, that's all for the best. I'm too much sick and exhausted to open my shakras today anyway. Going for a neutral grade here, just to err on the side of caution, and then I call it quits. Pretty sure there are a lot of typos in this "review" anyway, and honestly that's all that I can take with C&W today. Pity me folks. Leave a "like" button if you bear with my moaning. *Sneeze*! Good night folks. See you on the other side of the not-so-OK Corral! 3/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums 8/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3) Number of albums left to review: around a hundred, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 443 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 265 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 322

Dolly seems to be one of the sweetest, most likeable people on the planet but her voice and flavor of country has never really been my kind of thing. I can't really fault anything on this album, it was a pleasant but unremarkable listen.

Best: A Better Place to Live Worst: not gonna do that to dolly Liked songs: 60%, 6/10 Strong 3 I honestly wasn't expecting too much because I've never been a massive country fan, but this is a real solid album. The A-sides were decent but got me worried for the B-sides because they're always the worst on the album, but the B-sides on this album (and especially the last two songs) are the best thing about the album. Gotta love dolly too, didn't read too many of the lyrics but they seem to pretty cool (much like dolly). Almost considered giving it a 4 but there are some definite filler songs that drag it down to just below the 4 threshold.

Not my style but love her voice

Dolly Parton is a fantastic storyteller and you can hear the emotion in her voice. The songs were catchy and succinct but overall, I couldn't see myself coming back to this one.

I haven't listened to much country from the 60s and 70s but the times I have I enjoy it. Same goes for this album. Also, weirdly the story of Joseph and the coat of many colors was one of the more memorable biblical stories from my childhood

Loved this Dolly album. I had only heard Coat of Many Colors (great tune) but the full album had a nice funk groove for a country album. I'd 100% buy on vinyl for a crowd-pleasing listen.

Amazing vocals, not that into the songwriting though.

Fun album

Good minimalistic country. I'm pretty sure it's not her best work, but I still enjoyed it.

Hey, this album is great! This is not my jam, far from a masterpiece, but Dolly Parton is a legend and it shows.

I thought this was a great album -- a terrific surprise. The first two songs in particular were excellent. Dolly packs a lot into 28 minutes.

Certainly not my genre, but good songwriting

Dolly has not changed in many years - great at what she does but not my favourite genre

A sweet and cute little country album from Dolly, who is a huge legend in America but never made a big splash over here in Europe. I think her 1974 album "Jolene" is even better. I wonder why that one didn't make the list. Key tracks: Coat of Many Colors

meh? I don't really know what I was expecting from a Parton album but it definitely sounded like what I imagined a Parton album to sound like, without being iconic the way I hoped it would be 5/10

Only 26 minutes??? Dolly, you spoil us. After yesterday’s SEVENTY SEVEN MINUTES of Xtina, this will probably feel like a cool drink of water. I’ve listened to more Dolly than I ever have in the last couple years, but this one will contain mostly new stuff. Deep tracks better deliver. This is just a nice song. I mean I’m sure it’s vaguely religious somehow, but it’s a sweet sentiment and nice little pop country song. Before pop country was designed to sell trucks and beer to morons. Holy hell. Kicking it up a notch. God I do like this era of country. Guitar rips pretty good, voice is full of energy. This one is quite fun actually. There’s such an understated folk aspect to this song. Sounds ancient which is a very good thing. Man, modern music is terrible sometimes. This is probably the best of the bunch so far. The weird polyamory diversion is interesting. By interesting, I mean highly out of place. This one is not hitting the same. A little paint by numbers country. The mystery of the mystery??? This might be what finally breaks my case wide open. I’ve been walking these lonesome streets for a while now trying to make a dollar out of two dimes and now this broad with a crazy coat says she’s got some mysteries to solve. This damned city never sleeps. That concludes the noire detective portion of this review as we wait for the direct god stuff to be over. Whoa. Is this a diss track? Man. I love these old jealousy ballads. Yeah, Dolly. Scorch that skank. Pretty sweet. Whoa, some introspective bass opening. Is this the 90’s?? Ah nice, more folk. Her voice is really quite good. Couldn’t decide for awhile but it is nice. A tortured warble, which may sound like a critique, but it has character and passion. This stripped back instrumental is so good. Hmm. This is not something I’d listen to alone. Or really at all. It’s sweet, but not for me. Too much piano. Not enough going on. Too sappy. Here I am. Well. You’ve been here for awhile Dolly. Has anyone performed a wellness check on 1971 Dolly Parton? Did wellness checks exist back then? Was it a kick in the ass and a verbal teardown? Probably. This song is alright. She’s givin’ it large, as I heard some person say once. She’s really embodying that nonsense saying. Not the La La’s Dolly. You were doing so good. Less memorable. This album started off like a gentle freight train. Like one of those trains that take you through an old-timey amusement park. Gentle, fun, time to take everything in. AND it mixed in the thrill of big trains. Damn. Maybe I need to go to one of these places. Anyway. This album exhibited passion, capable singing and a lot of excellent songwriting only to be let down by a same sounding side B. A lot of the boxes ticked in my seemingly arbitrary album review process and a lovely listen all around. 3.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Coat of Many Colo(u)rs, Traveling Man, My Blue Tears, Early Morning Breeze

Pretty good. I've been in my country bag lately, but this doesn't hot the way I really want it to.

Not my cuppa

Man, country music is depressing. Can't say I enjoyed this album, but Dolly has a distinct voice and style.

it was okay maybe little repetitive

Not really my cup of tea honestly, didn't hate it but I have to admit I was glad when the last song played

Dolly Parton is a national treasure. This album was good...but not really in my wheelhouse.

Not my style but Dolly has an impressive voice. I understand why she is an icon.

I'm not a huge fan of country -- to say the least -- but it was nice to listen to; she knows how to write songs and sing them, and the background music is simple yet efficient.

COAT OF MANY COLORS by Dolly Parton First album I listened from this list, and it's the first country album I listened fully! In just 27 minutes with only 10 tracks, honestly it sounds pretty decent. Sure, it sounds like any other typical country album, but it's the way that Dolly does it that I can't even explain, but to say "yo, this shit ain't that bad". The lyrics there do go hard, like the second one had a CRAZY twist, and the sixth one just made me wanna cry (canon event). Will I revisit this album again? I don't know, but for this to be the first album, I'm off to a decent start, time to listen to another 999 albums left to hear!!! ._. 1.- Coat Of Many Colors = 8/10 2.- Traveling Man = 5/10 3.- My Blue Tears = 6/10 4.- If I Lose My Mind = 7/10 5.- The Mystery Of The Mystery = 5/10 6.- She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like) = 7/10 7.- Early Morning Breeze = 7/10 8.- The Way I See You = 8/10 9.- Here I Am = 8/10 10.- A Better Place To Live = 8/10 FINAL SCORE = 6.9/10

Even a jaded country skeptic like myself will readily admit that Dolly Parton has an incredible voice full of personality. But is that enough to justify a mix of alright upbeat tracks and totally uninspired country waltzes? Kind of, actually.

Things Dolly Parton doesn't understand: - Why men are pricks - Why her mum's a slag - What happens when we die

oli aika hyvä mut en lisänny soittolistaan yhtää

I had very few feelings at all regarding this album. Listened to it top to bottom in one drive to work. I enjoyed the staccato bass playing, it was really tight, but other than that I didn't have any opinions to be honest. It's possibly telling that when the album ended and Spotify autoplayed Jolene, it was the first time I was excited in the album because I thought it was one of its tracks. It wasn't. It's fine. Dolly is an icon and the bass was cool but that's about all this album has going for it, from my perspective. No issues with it and nothing incredibly boring either.

Dolly Parton is timeless and has inspired too many to name. Many of her standards were immediately recognizable on first listen. While it's not my usual cup of tea, it absolutely belongs on this list.

Хороший приятный голос

This album feels like a cozy chat with an old friend. The songs are simple and honest, sharing stories about family and hard times. There's a hint of Emmylou Harris in the way it all feels real, like you’re just sitting and listening to someone who really cares. The music stays low-key, letting the vocals and stories take center stage. It's heartfelt, down-to-earth, and doesn’t try to be anything it’s not.

It was good. I liked it

Pleasant and delightful. Some tracks had a more homespun gospel-sound to them, compared to what we've heard so far of the old school 70s country. Short and sweet, with a very compact run time, but enjoyable.

Good homespun country music from the Queen of country.

Overall: 6/10 Country really isn't my favourite genre of music and any artists making it needs something that stands out to differentiate them from the rest. Thankfully, Dolly stands out for two BIG reasons...her voice and her charisma! While it's not something I'm going to listen to a lot, this was enjoyable and I would recommend it to people who have a better relationship with Country than I do. Fav Song: Early Morning Breeze Least Fav Song: A Better Place to Live

Short, sweet, and goddamned good music. Dolly's straightforward storytelling style is very impactful to me, and while listening to this album (Coat of Many Colors, in particular), I was able to put a name to a feeling I have had for a very long time. 3.75

Oprigtigt bedre end forventet. Hendes må at fortælle på er charmerende, og med et glimt i øjet. Lidt belærende, men jeg hyggede mig med første halvdel af albummet. Det blev dog lidt for meget af det samme.

3 and a half stars, a nice country album but only a couple stand out tracks.

no me encanto, pero fue entretenido de escuchar top 3 traveling man coat of many colores a better place

I have tremendous respect for her singing, songwriting, and positive influence on folks. But I have a hard time listening to her do 10 songs in a row. So I'll continue liking her by micro-dosing her music.

Pretty nice country music.

Classic Dolly Parton

A generational voice which is perfect for this kind of easy listening.

Dolly has a really nice voice, it’s a shame so much of this album is singing about two timers and man stealers. If I listen to more Dolly, I’ll skip those kinds of songs.

a bit quiet for me

Dolly Parton is skilled. I don't just mean in writing songs and singing, but she's also skilled in sincerity. Despite having her own theme park (which has some worrying-sounding stories) and being extremely rich, she seems incapable of sounding insincere. It's a skill, even though it's pretty clear that a lot of that sincerity is genuine. Of course, this album was recorded back before Dollywood was even a twinkle in her eye, when she was just breaking out of being in a pretty popular duo. Whether she's singing about the mystery of the mystery or a dylanesque rant about how her mum ran off with a 'Travelling Man', it radiates charm. The band keeps up too, and isn't afraid to be as stereotypically southern country as possible. I can't really think of anything more to say than that. It misses out on being ranked higher because ultimately I'm just not much of a country guy, and I prefer it when she blends the genres more Fave: Early Morning Breeze Least Fave: My Blue Tears Strong Bad Demerit Counter: 3

Not much to say, I like country and I like dolly, a good listen

Dolly gør sin ting

Really nice country, didn’t realize how many years she’d been singing

I love her voice. The songs are comforting, and I am happy to have listened to Dolly for a change. However, nothing really stood out to me or stuck in my head, which is why I'm only giving the album 3 stars.

Biblical, thoughtful and a colorful dance with Dolly.

Cuntry and western

I love Dolly but it’s not something I’d just throw on

Not my normal listen.

I’m a bit partial to the odd bit of country music now and again. There’s quite a wide variety of styles available on this album from honky-tonk to Carter family style folky stuff. Really enjoyed Early Morning Breeze but not all to my taste.

Pleasant to listen to

Oikein rempseä ja mukava hyvänmielen taustamusiikkilätty. Queen D.

Tätä oli jotenki hirveen hellyttävää kuunnella 😭💘 love u dolly

could i write poetry to this? n

Did not use a private Spotify. Another country album. It's Dolly, appreciate her voice, but it's not for me.

I'm not normally a fan of this genre, but she's got a unique and appealing voice, and some good lyrics (although she sure talks to her Mama a lot).

Great voice and appreciate her talent, but just not a big fan of country music.

Starts off strong with title track. A national treasure.

ese corte no me gusta

I don't like too much country but it is very cool for someone that likes it. Talks too much about her mother, but i get how much rock took from country (how they influentiet each others)

very good considering it was country. but still country

Love a bit of Dolly. There were some good songs here. Not the greatest though?

I must confess, though I love Dolly, I am not a huge fan of that vibrato. And this all sounds a bit samey to me. I think she’s one of those artists where I would prefer a greatest hits package

Simple, unassuming, easy

It was hard for me to enjoy as the genre isn't for me, but she has a nice voice and the music was calming and harmonious.

Enjoyed it as I expected to.

Story-telling country songs across a range of genres/moods, all twangy and made with high-polish Nashville production, from poignant folk to pop bluegrass to piano ballads to high energy country rock. Her vocals in particular are the highlight with memorable phrasing, pauses, and overall a really charismatic delivery. The soaring lap steel soars the close harmonies are really affecting in the way they always are.

Wow. What an awful time Dolly Parton is having with men in this album. A boyfriend who gets stolen by her mum. A boyfriend who is trying to convince her to become a swinger against her will. And a woman who will fuck anything that moves. Loved it

Big respect for Dolly! Not really my scene, but I appreciated the different vibe today

So I’m not really a fan of Dolly’s chipmunk stylings and I’m mostly not a listener of country. This album is more traditional country with a heavy folk influence, particularly on the title song. But I am a fan of ‘70s singer songwriter genre and I feel like this is a mostly listenable, even enjoyable, album on that level. 3.4

not my style but dolly is a story teller!

Lovely little album, doesn't outstay its welcome, is pretty samey it must be said.

I mean, it's Dolly. She's very good at what she does. Just not really my jam.

Dolly is always great! Sounds great, lyrics are fairly simple. The music is what you would expect from a country westren album.

Exactly what I expected Dolly Parton to sing to me. Well, the plot twist with her mum and the travelling man aside, maybe! Sweet, wise, enjoyable. Thanks Dolly

As over-encompassing as this list is, country music has a surprisingly small presence. And that’s not something I’m necessarily complaining about. Maybe it just isn’t a taste I’ve fully acquired yet. But I do like a country song here and there. And I don’t scoff at people who enjoy it like I used to. But it also really depends on what kind of country music we are talking about. I am an avid and impassioned hater of what the genre has become in modern times. There are few words I wouldn’t use to describe my distaste for the Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen’s of the world. But those people are not the subject of this review. Dolly Parton is. And with this one album, she did a better job at convincing me of the power of country than maybe any other artist before. She’s definitely one of the most iconic female music stars of all time. And it’s impressive that she’s been making music for nearly 60 years, and consistently the entire time at that. I’ll admit that my perception of her had been a little twisted up until today. Simply because she has leaned more into that aforementioned form of music in recent years. But her roots were pure and strong. This album contains all of the things I look for in decent country music. And it also revealed to me just how talented of a songwriter and lyricist Dolly actually is. It’s a lot more sophisticated than I presumed it would be. What really carries the album is her voice though. Her delivery accompanied by the incredibly smooth natural vibrato makes for some marvelous performances. They are powerful, effective and simple. How I’m scoring this isn’t determined by Dolly herself, but more so my attraction towards country, and whether I see myself coming back to this in the future. Which is probably unlikely. Rating: 6/10

Not heard this one before. I enjoy storytelling in songs, how it paints a vivid picture. Very powerful singing and songwriting. Highlights: Coat of Many Colours My Blue Tears A Better Place To Live

I had never heard any of the songs on this album prior to this listen. Her songwriting and voice are so recognisable and are so authentic on this record. It is definitely more my style. Her delivery is always on point even when I don’t enjoy a song. I only wish there was slightly more range but the shortness of the album made up for it. Favourites: Coat of Many Colours, Early Morning Breeze, Here I Am Least Favourites: The Mystery of the Mystery

Decent. Listening to this album makes me think of browsing in a flea market or antique mall. Dolly is great but this album didn’t grab me.

ye 😬👍

Pretty standard Dolly album. The singles didn't really stand out to me or impress me all that much but the Nashville formula is so enticing and efficient that it's really easy to listen to, which is good.

It was fun to listen to Dolly songs that I don’t already know! Her voice is so iconic. But I do feel like Dolly has better albums out there. A Better Place to Live was my favorite song.

Cute storytelling, lovely voice.

Relaxing old school country. Old fashioned sounding recording.

I am not much of a country listener but Dolly is one of the exceptions. She is so darn charming. I like coat of many colours and travelling man.

she's got a great voice songs blend together a bit though

The album starts off quite strong, but plateaus off to fair generic country & western. My mum loves Dolly Parton and specifically the opening track, which is a great song, that's enough to inflate my rating.

++: Traveling Man, She Never Met a Men (She Didn't Like), Early Morning Breeze +: Coat of Many Colors, My Blue Tears, If I Lose My Mind, The Mystery of The Mystery, The Way I See, Here I Am, A Better Place to Live 7,0/10

I am not at a country fan but I love Dolly. She does have such a flawless voice. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

Country music wouldn’t exactly be my choice, but at least this is better than the garbage pop country we have to live with now. And Dolly Parton is a damn treasure of humanity for sure, I'm just not someone who would ever listen to her music. But I listened to this. That's really about all I can say about it. I guess I'll rate it a 2.5/5 because I can see why people like it and it was short and sweet.

# 297 : Haven't really listened to Dolly outside of her hits and I found this Pleasant to listen to. Great songs, great voice, under 30 minute runtime. It packs a punch but, on the whole, a little bit boring and no song really stood out to me here, but pleasant all the same. Favourite Track : Coat Of Many Colours

It's stuff like this that affirms my belief that there are, in fact, no objectively bad genres, at least as far as broad genres are concerned. I've never been a fan of country music. However, the country music I've been exposed to is primarily what I would call "modern bro-country." You know, stuff like Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, and Luke Bryan. I hate that music. It's so bad. I can't stand it. However, country as a genre is not objectively bad, and I know that because of Dolly Parton. Well, okay, there's other important artist like Johnny Cash that also affirm that belief. Dolly Parton is truly an American legend, and for good reason. Not only is she a stunning philanthropist (in more ways than one), she's also a pretty good musician. This album is quite good. The opening title track is just a great song, but the rest of them aren't bad either. Dolly's vocals are impressive and a joy to listen to. The writing is also solid. The sound is pleasant to listen too. Overall, while country isn't really my thing, there's no doubt that this is a solid album that has a lot going for it. High 3/5.

Everyone knows that Dolly Parton is country music royalty. That alone doesn’t do much for me, as I’m just not a big fan of the genre (with a handful of exceptions). But Parton is clearly something special. Her voice is majestic, haunted yet confident. You can feel her heartbreaks and jealousies from miles away. It is what country music is meant to be, but she does it well and better than the vast majority of men who dominate that section of the industry. To top that off, she’s also just know to be very cool. I won’t listen to this one often, if ever again. As I said, it’s just not my genre. But I said that with the utmost respect.

Okay this kind of Country I can tolerate, mainy just because how good of a person Dolly is. Key word being tolerate. The biblical references are cringe. The whole album is only 27 min. I can do that. lol There's a couple songs on here that I like. I like the old sound, and her voice.

I by no means am a country fan, so I can't say for sure whether or not this is good by country standards. Compared to other music in general, it's okay. Dolly definitely put her heart and soul into every one of these songs, and that's something that can't be said for many country artists. I guess what I'm saying is that she tried at the very least.

Katsotaan: matala 3.

Mama sure gets mentioned a lot. I enjoyed the title track and “Here I Am” which is well written. A bit too much of a country church vibe for my tastes. The double vocal got old and her pitch is only good for a couple songs before it’s annoying.

I recognized the title track. It’s a fine album. I get she’s an American icon and all that but didn’t feel like anything groundbreaking to me.

-I have never listened to a single Dolly Parton song before this album I don’t think but she sorta cooked here. It’s very reminiscent of the album I got the day before too -Favorites are Coat Of Many Colors, Traveling Man, and She Never Met A Man

Not a big country fan, but this album is a good listen

Dolly! Some of the tracks were a little too Country for me, but the overall album was well-written and well-produced, and not a bad listen for a slow Sunday morning.

It was pretty good, Ms Dolly

Wenn Country, dann Dolly. Gut, aber dann halt doch etwas zu viel Country ***1/2

I enjoy Dolly Parton, so it pains me that while this album is critically acclaimed, and while the narrative lyrics are earnest and well written, the music and the arrangement itself is fairly generic and samey for country music, particular in the 1970s and becomes a tad boring after awhile. "Coat of Many Colors" and "Here I Am" were the only tracks I truly enjoyed off this album. Everything else was meh.

Entertainment

Lekker prima country album, Dolly is een topper joh FAVO: Coat of many colors, Travelling Man, Early morning breeze

Such a lovely voice. Not wildly enamoured by this album, but it was nice to listen to.

This was my first time listening to a Dolly Parton album. I wasn't expecting it to be so contentful and wholesome. Dolly doesn't write cheap rhymes. While I'm not anxious to listen to more country, I liked this album way more than I expected.

Perus kantria. Osa akustista, osa enemmän rock. Parhaat: My Blue Tears, Coat Of Many Colors

I like Dolly - got a heart of gold and it is reflected in her music.

She is a very good songwriter.

Such a distinct voice. Dolly could sing any song and have it come through with such emotion. Title of album, song is so powerful!

a queen an icon !!

Parton is an excellent song writer but she is limited by the constraints of mainstream country music

Easy listening. Nobody can dislike Dolly.

Easy-listening, will need to give it another spin to get the most out of this and identify favourites

Surprisingly enjoyed this country album

3.3 stars rounded down

I will give this a little listen. Definitely not a country fan at all. I respect the classic country, like a-Dolly Parton. Pretty good though. I am pretty sure she is young during this record.

I like Dolly, nice to listen to a country-style album once in a blue moon. However, nothing really that catching.

This was perfectly pleasant without being life changing

I'm going to give her a 3 because it's Dolly Parton. But I'd be lying if I said I enjoyed this in any way. Just a bit too much of the old country sound. Happy for the listen, but would not revisit. 3

3 Dolly Parton is genuinely someone I respect the hell out of and admire as both a person and musician, but as far as listening to her actual music goes - meh. This album is fine, and Dolly has an iconic voice and all, but it doesn’t do much to really stand apart from a lot of other country albums from this era, at least for me - though, there’s admittedly a touch of charisma to Dolly’s music that puts her above some of her peers. Things start strongly enough with Coat of Many Colors and Traveling Man, both of which have a strong sense of storytelling to them and even a bit of humor with the latter in particular, but I feel like songs start running together very quickly after that. The only track that really stood out to me as remarkably enjoyable after the first two was Early Morning Breeze, which I think largely benefits from Dolly’s delicate vocals, though I will give a dishonorable mention to Mystery of the Mystery for its redundantly dumb name and chorus. However, one song I do want to give a special shoutout to is the closer, A Better Place to Live. While I wouldn’t call it an outright favorite, I do love its messaging, and perhaps more importantly, the reminder it serves as to Dolly is truly being one of the most accepting and loving people in a musical genre notoriously tied with bigots. Though I didn’t love this album as a whole, I think the world would be a much better place if modern country music sounded more like this and less like Try This in a Small Town.

Okay album. Not very much my taste, but I can see why it's a classic,

Title track is pleasant and Travelling Man is a bit of a bop. Then it gets a bit too country but there's more stuff in here I like in the second half: Early Morning Breeze in particular is a great song that leans more folk than country to me. The Way I See You is strong with nice piano backing, and Here I Am has pretty melodies and powerful vocals. Cool bassline too. I can't rate this higher but the second side is worth listening to at the very least.

Great country album and wonderful story telling. Got a bit preachy at the end but pretty good album

Better than expected

I love Coat of Many Colors and a couple of other songs. One of my preferred country albums it's just this isn't my genre really

this album is pretty short clocking at around 27 minutes so the listen went by pretty quick. im not sure where else i heard dolly parton from but i didnt really enjoy this album all so much. it was a boring listen imo since everything sounded samey. country isnt something that i listen to often but i feel like im better off listening to someone else like townes van zandt. the album itself is tolerable but i wouldnt listen to it again. 3 personal favs: my blue tears

Old school traditional country music. Dolly is legend and magnificent talent. Nuff said.

it was intriguing when i first saw the album i thought ehhhhh some country crap turns out it was nice highlights: if i lose my mind, early breeze track

The songs in general lean on sentimentality too much and lose much of their strength because of that. But in terms of lyrics and music, this is a well built album which I think captures what Dolly Parton wanted to express. She is an excellent artist, but not one that appeals to me. Well worth listening to and she definitely shows thoughtfulness in her songs that I admire. Her themes of relationships are sometimes very run-of-the-mill, but more often, she creates a narrative that is hers with her own insights.

Proper old school country

Country aint my cup of tea, but this album wasnt bad. The songs in my opinion would be better to listen on a drive or playing cowboy video games like Red Dead.

It's hard to turn down a Dolly Parton album, even one with a truly creepy cover like this one. (And now that I find out that it's a painting based on a school photo taken the day she wore the titular coat of many colors, I feel badly feeling creeped out by the album cover. Even worse, it sounds like she was treated much worse by her schoolmates than in the song: "the other children stripped the coat off of her and locked her, half naked and screaming, in a dark coat closet. She says this is why she always sleeps with a light on now." Yikes.) I've never been a huge fan of this kind of classic country music, but it's hard to deny that this has a lot of really strong songs, most of them written by Dolly Parton, and great lyrical stories. (And an interesting crossover-sounding song in "Here I Am".) Thanks, Dolly!

Had never listened to this before. Now I can see the plain copy that Barbara Jean was from Nashville. All of her songs sound exactly like Dolly.

country... nog zo'n genre waar ik weinig mee heb...nu, dan valt Double D Dolly nog mee, alles beter dan een redneck met bruin gedachtengoed

Some country music I actually like. And Dolly is a tremendous person. Early Morning Breeze is a song I’ll come back to

Lovely

Dollywood baby

Stabiles Country-Album mit unverwechselbarer Stimme.

This didn't stand out for me - maybe it's just that Dolly has so many hits I'm expecting to hear them.

I liked Traveling Man and A Better Place To Live. Kinda neutral about the rest.

As much as i'd like to like this it leaves me cold. Dolly has such a beautiful voice, such a lovely talented person as well.

This album is a bit more country than I usually listen to, and I didn't enjoy it as much because of that. I can hear how the Dixie Chicks were inspired by some of these tracks, especially "Coat of Many Colors." "Early Morning Breeze" and "Here I Am" are probably my favorites, and the ones I'd be most likely to listen to on my own.

Classic Dolly. Great musicianship somewhat undercut by the simplicity and subject matter of the album. Great intro album to her strongest material.

A bit boring, and the title song is overly sentimental. But a nice short album that doesn't overstay its welcome

these felt like a bunch of songs written for a very different type of woman than me. just not my thing but enjoyable enough.

Dolly is a gem and I really miss country music that sounds like this.

Like Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze. Other tracks nice, but probably wouldn't go back again.

I can't hate on Dolly, but she just isn't my thing.

Completely fine!

I think dolly’s a wonderful songwriter and really enjoyed several songs but probably wouldn’t sit down with the album again

classic country.

How many men are gonna break poor Dolly's heart?

Classic country. Dolly does have a good voice.

None of her very famous songs so I didn't recognise any. Was interesting enough that I never wanted to skip through them all though

"i found it quite annoying" - my Mum

I justt wish her lyrics had that extra bit of depth. She's 11/10 woman though.

B- Coat Of Many Colors 3 Traveling Man 3 My Blue Tears 3 If I Lose My Mind 3 The Mystery Of The Mystery 3 She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like) 3 Early Morning Breeze 3 The Way I See You 4 Here I Am 3 A Better Place To Live 3 Pretty average for a woman with MASSIVE KNO-

Somehow Dolly can make me enjoy this kinda stuff.

Classic

Wouldn’t be my type of music, but got to give it to Dolly she is a legend and should Be in the book.

Pleasant enough but not really a genre of interest.

Dolly Parton's voice is too high pitched in this album for me to really enjoy it. A re-recording of it would land it 5/5 imo.

That was nice

Despite not being a big Dolly Parton fan I listen to the album. I enjoyed Early Morning Breeze and the title track Coat of many colors. I can see why this is considered a classic Dolly Parton album.

Its good

Great songwriting. Went well under my radar.

Country, which can be fun. Enjoyed some tracks. A bit too gee-whillickers homespun wisdom at times.

Doesn't do for me what it does to Rolfe. Voice is a little bit wobbly for me, and it's a bit too twee in too many places for me. Better than a couple of the recent country efforts that we've had, but doesn't do enough to trouble the better ones for me. 3/5.

Great storytelling with a pinch of humour.

Well I enjoyed that way more than I thought I would. Liked the first 2 songs and Here I Am, but Early Morning Breeze is my favourite. Some excellent song writing with a sense of humour.

Classic Country w/ Dolly

I'm really not a fan of country music, so this was a bit of a slog to get through. Listening to this objectively I will say that lyrically this is really good. The musicianship is good. The production is good. Yet I just didn't enjoy it.

This was a generally pleasant listen. The slower ballads certainly stood out better than the faster and more edgy tracks. I could relisten to this in certain contexts. 3/5.

Favourite song- my blue tears

It's country again.

Coat of many colors and never met a man are fire. She says mama in every song

Un buen disco. El Country no es un genero del que sea fan pero este álbum me ha resultado fresco y agradable.

March 26, 2024 "Take it, Dolly. Dale"- Pitbull HL: title track, "Traveling Man", "Here I Am" I might like this album a bit less then it deserves. I pulled up another 70's country album from my personal listening list, I'm Jessi Colter (1975) to try to pinpoint why. After liking the latter more, I realize it ain't that complicated. My ideal country is watered down with other genres- as in Colter's case, soft rock, pop & blues. Some of my favourite albums this year have been country-ish, with Gram Parsons, the Band, even k.d. lang representing that one foot in, one foot out mentality. Coat of Many Colors is pretty traditionalist, and essential country listening, it's just not generally what I'd choose for everyday listening. The title track is admittedly wonderful, as is "Here I Am" towards the end of the album.

Real storytelling!

Dolly is a great song-writer, and “Coat of Many Colors” might be one of the best examples of her song-writing abilities. The album is enjoyable, and is a good example of country music of the era. It isn’t really my favorite style, but makes sense to include on this list and was a great opportunity for exposure to something I probably wouldn’t have come across on my own.

There aren't any really bonafide hits here but this is that late 60s / early 70s country, super tightly written songs. And I also just buy whatever Dolly's selling here. I don't love it but I've listened to it twice?

I like the songwriting. I love the playing. It pains me to say it, but the big bugbear with this album is Parton's quavery, goblin voice. It wouldn't sound out of place on a second-tier Muppet. Still, I'd be tempted to grant four stars based on all the other qualities that Coat of Many Colors possesses. Country rock bouncer 'Traveling Man' is ace, whilst the modal 'Early Morning Breeze' is affecting and the best track here. I'd like to give a four - but hot dog, that voice, man. Bleh!

Nice charming album. The vocals were stellar, but I don't know why it just fell flat. It was good, don't get me wrong. I think I expected every song to be like Coat of Many Colors, but it was proven wrong.

3/5. Way too short to get any higher of a score. Pretty standard early 70s country.

Good length. More variation than the Johnny Cashes of the world. Her voice is unpleasant to my ears, but that's a matter of taste. Favorite song: early morning breeze.

Sounds like summer

I mean, it's classic country music, so it's not going to be my thing. Dolly's a class act though. There's lots of personality in these songs, and they're nicely put together. This one is easy listening enough to work for me.

I'm pro-Dolly, but I don't have a lot of time to listen to her music.

Probably hurt by the fact that I still associate Dolly Parton with the Hannah Montana tv show

this was fine,, i like dolly but her later stuff is more interesting. this is very plain and simple 70s country that i have never really enjoyed. there were a few tracks that had more interesting arrangements, though. this is something i would listen to if i'm specifically in a country mood. 6.5/10, fav tracks: my blue tears, early morning breeze, the way i see you

Not a big fan of country but I can roll with Dolly on this one. Fun album that shows how and why she became as massive as she did.

Good album in terms of country music, but I’m still not a country music fan.

this album might be

Very nice, good-old-fashioned country-music. Slightly aged.

Sure sounds like dolly Parton

better than expected!

The album consists of 10 radio-ready ditties, mostly sweet and sentimental stories with a wry twist of humor in a few. There are some good studio musicians playng a nice mix of styles - country, gospel, bluegrass and I swear I hear some rock licks bangin' along in there in places. Whether you like the warbly-country vocal style or not (I don't) Ms. Parton is a skilled singer with a great voice. I enjoyed the listen more than I expected.

Lot of love for Dolly but with I connected with this album more

LIKE: Here I Am RECOGNISE: - rly enjoy D P, solid 3.4

It's hard for me to make myself listen to country music, but this classic country (Dolly, Merle, Hank, Willie, Johnny, etc) always surprises me. And who doesn't like Dolly Parton? This is by no means a new favorite, but I enjoyed listening to it. "The Mystery of the Mystery" is a nice reflection on how little we know (more God than I usually care for, but not obnoxious). "Early Morning Breeze" is a nice reminder to enjoy what you've got. I wouldn't say any one track stood out to me among the others, but I wasn't wondering when it would be over.

Talented women in business and songwriting. But one listen is all o could do. Maybe if o grew up in the mountains

Good!!

I liked it! Don't think i'll listen to it again But i'll def listen to travelling man in the future! It was my fav

Nice album by one of the historic persons of popular music the last 70 years.

\"But I patterned my look after the town tramp.\" <- sickest possible quote i did not fucking know she'd been making music for this long jesus christ. is that a steel guitar. this should like, play on the new vegas radio actually but maybe they didnt wanna get the rights. or maybe they hate women idfk. idk i feel similarly to how i do about a lot of country artists. its perfectly good, happy 4 u, sure u went thru it for many reasons but i am not gonna listen to this a lot. 3.5 to me personally, maybe if i had listened to her other shit or like read more interviews id have more thoughts. i keep trying to relisten bc i feel like i ll enjoy it more if i know the lyrics and really pay attention to the vocal and instrumental performance and i just cannot pay attention to it to reevaluate. im sorry. i do think the lyrics r fun. most of the time oh fuck organ in this song hell yea ok new theory: being high correctly stimulates my brain and i am able to actually enjoy things like this but normally it just is not attacking me enough for me to have fun

Dolly is an underrated songwriter. Wagoners songs she did not as good.

A little hokey, but cute.

I don’t like country music. I might enjoy a song or two, but after a short while it grates on my nerves. However, I’ve developed a higher tolerance after having to endure the entire Nity Gritty album, so I’m not as opposed to country as, say a month ago. On the positive side here is Dolly’s voice, which is absolutely phenomenal and cleverly enough stands out in the mix. Also? the title track is such a good song, which Dolly delivers with all the emotion she van muster. Unfortunately, the rest of the songs just aren’t as good and despite of the album’s short running time, I get bored. Only Early Morning Breeze blows some relief at the end.

Nr. 122/1001 Coat Of Many Colors 3/5 Traveling Man 2/5 My Blue Tears 3/5 If I Lose My Mind 3/5 The Mystery of the Mystery 3/5 She Never Met A Man 3/5 Early Morning Breeze 3/5 The Way I See You 3/5 Here I Am 4/5 A Better Place To Live 3/5 Average: 3,0 Okay little country album.

Pretty good Dolly Parton album.

Nice jugs. Ez 3.5

She might have a great voice, but I just have no business with the coutry genre.

The lyrics, chords, and the passion in her voice as she sings are the standing points of this album. It’s a comforting album, though it’s one that understands the hardships and struggles of life.

Dolly is great! But I don't see me coming back to this album.

I just really like Dolly Parton as a person and Coat of many Colors is a really good song.

country, guitar, female, slow/mid/fast, polyphonic, good old american dream music, great voice, has much more drive than expected, great melodies and personality - I don't want to like that

Кантри не мое, по альбом симпатичный такой аля деревенский шансон или авторская песня

Nice enough, but not a lot of GREAT songs.

Not as many bangers as I was expecting but otherwise solid

All songs are the same imo.

C'était cool, pas mon délire ultime mais intéressant.

sounds sounded pretty similar, she has a good voice but i wasn’t kept fully interested throughout

That was pleasant to listen to but ultimately underwhelming.

I've never listened to Dolly, seriously before. So this was a pleasant experience, although it seems that her voice or style of songwriting might not have changed much over her lifetime.

#115. I was never really into Dolly Parton. I just don't get it. It's not bad or whatever, I just don't want it. 3/5: acceptable

Mostly chill, some higher paced songs. The slower soft stuff is pretty nice though. Semi repetitive, a lot of the songs sound similar.

True classic country.

There is no doubt that Dolly is an iconic and talented artist, but I still found myself finding this album to be a little too repetitive. I like how personal the album is, but if I don’t love the music then I don’t care about the lyrics. Most songs are beautiful, but if you asked which song was which I wouldn’t be able to answer.

Andar por la mañana, viajar en coche, pero solo 2 o 3 canciones

cute cute... 7.5/10

This is a sweet and tender timepiece with enduring values.

Going through each song: Coat of Many Colors - beautiful heart to the song Traveling man - yikes momma steals your man, “that’s rough buddy” My Blue Tears - relatable, love sitting in my sorrows If I lose my mind - imagine needing your mom, hurts, yeah I should call her The mystery of the mystery- very inquisitive, one for the philosophers She’s never met a man she didn’t like - Oof, dolly let him go if he doesn’t want you he’s stupid. Early Morning Breeze - favorite background music of the album I think, song aesthetic is cottage core, The Way I See you - gross, love, blagh Here I am - sorry Dolly but Spirit’s Here I am can’t be beat, still very sweet and v me, hopefully A better Place to live - but I love finding faults hehe kidding, sweet song. Based on my taste in music: 3/5 Pretending to be a music critic: 3.8/5

After seeing the other ratings I was expecting to hate this but I think it was a solid middle of the road album! A bit slow paced for my liking but emotive and authentic.

I'm not a big country fan. Or at all, really. Dolly is a lot more palatable than most, though, and there were some genuinely nice and funny songs on here. Am I likely to put this album on? No. But it was enjoyable enough.

This album seems to be highlighted mostly for its very tender songs like the title track, “Early Morning Breeze”, or “Here I Am”. But this album also demonstrates Parton’s versatility in a way that some of her other great albums (like Jolene, my personal favorite) do not. “Traveling Man” in particular is a fantastic song with humor, akin to Johnny Cash/Shel Silverstein’s “A Boy Named Sue” or some of Jim Steinman’s songs for Meat Loaf. It’s that kind of hilarity: the narrator is in love with an older traveling man and wants to run away with him, but she’s afraid to tell her mom because she knows her mom would disapprove. Meanwhile the traveling man is getting with the narrator’s mom and runs away with her instead. Great song on a solid album.

Sad lyrics, beautiful voice

Dolly Parton has an amazing voice. Coat of Many Colors song is incredible. Also love mystery of the mystery.

I’m not a big fan of country music as a whole, and I really felt like a lot of the instrumentals, especially towards the end of the album were quite bland. However she does have a great voice and that makes the album much more enjoyable. My favourite song was definitely the title track

6.5/10. She has an amazing voice and it’s very old western music. First time ever listening to a girl sing a western. Favourites was coat of many colours. Would Probably listen to her again.

nice one.

An ok country album with one outstanding song

Not my kinda music, however this album conveys a sense of melancholy and yearning brilliantly

Overall, I liked it but some of the songs didn’t really stick with me even after listening a couple times. Favorite: Coat of Many Colors

Well crafted songs. Pretty standard. No experimental music. Classic Dolly Parton.

3 stars

Dolly's songwriting fits well with older traditional country music, which is my preference, having said that I do find it a bit difficult to listen to an entire album as I am not a big fan of here voice or delivery. The musicians playing behind her are stellar country players and provide a good setting for the songs. I do understand her strong following despite the fact that she is not someone I would listen to often. Favorite songs: Coat of Many Colours, My Blue Tears

anden halvdel grew on me, skøn stemme og jeg syntes faktisk instrumentationerne var rigtig fine. Man skal være i humør til det dog

Fairly enjoyable, nothing truly standout to me, but I know nothing about country

Still undecided if it's pleasantly boring or boringly pleasant.

40/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Like the Internet, I love Dolly Parton as a person. Her music, however, is just not for me. She does cool stuff with her vibrato, mind you. Not my thing, but she writes nice songs. I bumped this up to the minimum score for 3 stars.

A fun little album to listen to, though I have never been more convinced life sucked in the old days.

Dolly Parton has such a distinct voice, you can pick out her sounds easily, but listening to this album, I don't think I paid much attention to what sounds like a little vibrato (I'm not sure if that's the right word) there that really works so well to this style. I don't know country too well, but I am willing to give anything a try. Dolly is a real story teller, and in the title track it really shined through, but I do find myself getting a little bored at times with this album. There are some great songs, but then most of the song, I doubt I wouldn't come back too often to listen to this one. When trying to focus on the music, I was surprised just how great the bassist (Bobby Dyson) was here (especially in Travelling Man). Standout: Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, Here I Am

Bless Dolly Parton

Again, this music isn't usually my jam and there's nothing on this album which really changes my mind on that. I like the strong sense of character (presumably Dolly's herself?) I get from the album. And obviously the title track is very evocative. I'm just not a big fan of the music behind the songs. Standout track: Travelling Man

As far as Country goes, this is OK. It's just that I'm not a fan of that genre. The lyrics are mostly naive bordering on cringe, but I guess if you don't listen close enough and don't mind the genre, this is quite alright. 3/5

This album is regarded as Dolly Parton's best and favorite work. Almost every song on this album is considered a hit. Dolly Parton has talent and is an excellent song writer. Not many people could write a song about a mom and daughter falling in love with the same stranger. Unfortunately, the listener and writer of this review is not the targeted demographic.

Can't say anything bad about the songwriting. But it's not my favorite style of music.

Not really my kind of music, though I appreciate it is good quality in its genre. And Dolly is a singer/songwriter legend. There were a few tracks here that stood out for me - especially The Way I See You / Here I Am.

A little disappointing with how the album started out, with two great storytelling tracks. It quickly falls off into a series of love or heartbreak songs, never to return. 6/10

This is totally not my preference, but Dolly really makes everything shine. I was surprised to enjoy this as much as I did.

- nice voice - down on the farm type music

Country music isn't really my style but this had a pleasant vibe which was quite enjoyable

There's no denying Dolly's talent, country is just super hit or miss for me. Really this would be a 3.5 out of 5 if I could.

Coat of Many Colors - 8/10 Travelling Man - 6/10 My Blue Tears - 7/10 If I Lose My Mind - 7/10 The Mystery of The Mystery - 6/10 She Never Met a Man - 8/10 Early Morning Breeze - 9/10 The Way I See You - 8/10 Here I Am - 8/10 TOTAL - 67/100

I listened to this one quite a while back, but failed to write a review at the time. After a second listen this morning, I'm not entirely sure where I fall. The writing is often narrative and the singing is fine, but I never find myself terribly engaged. Traveling Man is a fun one at the front end, Early Morning Breeze is solid, and Here I Am is a familiar one. Fine album, but not my cup o' tea: 3.

A very nice quick old country album that I really enjoyed

Dolly's voice is like no other. Pretty peaceful good country but nothing that really stood out to me too crazily. Debated between a 3 or 4. Like the length of the album though. Also I’m not quite sure she was actually singing at the halftime show on thanksgiving but hot damn she looks and sounds amazing for 77. Props yo.

Another tough rating…I didn’t dislike it, and I kind of like Dolly’s voice, but the storytelling felt a little overly twee, maybe.

Some are my favorites from my childhood!

I heard of Dolly Parton and knew she was a singer, but not sure why she was famous. I know now. Her voice is lovely. It has innocence and soul. Her vibrato is delightful. Usually not a big fan of country music and this album, but a high rating for her voice.

I'm not a fan of country, but I respect the hell out of Dolly Parton, so I'm glad I listened to this. I enjoyed it about as much as I can enjoy a country album, though I probably won't listen to it again.

I love Dolly the person and her voice is great too. But having said that, I'm not a huge fan of country, so while this is a pleasant listen, I don't know that I would ever listen again.

Solid album! Short and sweet and had an iconic sound Coat of Many Colors is def the stand out

I appreciate this album for what it is, and the place of Dolly Parton in the canon of music history. This is however, not for me.

Short but just fine

Classic, but a little repetitive

Some groovy country, some plain old country. I liked some of it but it wasn’t a memorable album.

A bit trite in places but a breath of fresh air after so much clumpy country dad rock

Lovely woman, lovely voice, but this all started to sound the same after awhile.
