Dolly is sweet and naive and I give her credit for keeping Coat of Many Colors a tight 27 mins but in the end it’s very very old timey. Not terrible but may as well be from a different planet 4.3/10

Not a huge fan of country but if I'm going to listen to it, Dolly Parton from the 70s is likely not a bad choice. Favourite tracks "Traveling Man" and "Early Morning Breeze", tellingly the least country sounding. 3 known / 5 new

This is the 5th album I’m rating. I have not heard of this album until now but I’m excited to listen to a full country album for the first time. Coat of Many Colors - Adding to my Playlist. Not the biggest fan of the vocals but it’s good enough. Traveling Man - Not Adding to my Playlist. This had a bad second half. My Blue Tears - Adding to my Playlist. A little better than Coat of Many Colors. If I Lose My Mind - Not Adding to my Playlist. Some pretty cool lyrics but it’s pretty boring. The Mystery of the Mystery - Not Adding to my Playlist. The singing is a bit annoying. She Never Met a Man (She Didn’t Like) - Not Adding to my Playlist. I didn’t like the vocals. Early Morning Breeze - Adding to my Playlist. This song sounds really good and peaceful. Best song so far. The Way I See You - Not Adding to my Playlist. The instrumentals are a bit repetitive and annoying. Here I Am - Adding to my Playlist. Kinda boring but it’s fine. A Better Place to Live - Adding to my Playlist. The opening of this song made me smile. All in all I liked 5/10 of the songs. It was pretty good for my first ever country album and there are no songs that I actually dislike.

She’s so good, man lmao. Her voice is amazing, but I hate how she has so much vibrato; I know by now it’s her signature style but it can be a bit much for me sometimes. Other than that the songwriting is great and the songs are too. I’ll be replaying this.

Day 9: Coat of Many Colors - Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton delivered a brief, but enjoyable country album. Dolly Parton's status as a music legend is not disputable. I mean, how many musicians can say that they own their own theme park? Dolly Parton's pristine vocals add a nice touch to the relaxed instrumentation of her songs on the album. The lyrics to her songs are also really nice. This is a great album, but it isn't one that I would say is a must-listen. Perhaps Jolene would have been a better fit. I feel bad for giving Queen Dolly Parton three stars, but oh, well. Personal Enjoyment: 4/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 3/5.

Not my typical style but enjoyable

At first I was like ... Dolly Parton? But I have always liked her as a person and after listening to her storytelling ways through her music it is all so wholesome and uplifting I can't help but to feel like she is pretty much a treasure. I am not much of a country fan, but the element of listening erases any weirdness from "genre." Don't try to do much of anything else when listening though! You find yourself stopping so you can hear the punchlines!

What is like about classical country music is the stories they tell and Dolly Parton is a masterful storyteller. From the innocence and optimism of the title track to the loss of innocence in "If I Lose My Mind" her songs find a way to reach the listeners.

9/10 maybe even close to a 10 as I feel every song is a great addition and I got something out of the tracks; a message, a laugh or just nice descriptions of a morning sun... personal and infectious lyrics and I may have been to harsh on country, the mellow guitars exude comfort :) Traveling Man is funny cause you can hear her laugh midtake, something I had previously heard on Yung Lean - Shine lol :D The Mystery of Mystery presents an interesting question about how much we really can know! Very passionate voice on all her songs! And from what I remember she is well liked with a lot of philanthropy so that's great :D

This is both very lightweight in terms of music, but really pretty fucking heavy on lyrical content. Pleasant but not amazing.

Besides the fact that Dolly Parton is an absolute treasure (and I’m not even American) and that my heart simply doesn’t allow me to put anything less than 5, I really enjoyed this album. And I felt like being supported and like I’m not alone.

She is precious, I'll give her that. This is as about as good as country gets for me.

This is a very pretty album, and Dolly's voice is awesome. That said, it's just not my cup of tea. I appreciate the inclusion on the 1001, though, definitely worth the listen!

Głos Parton ma ciekawą wibrację, jest dosyć androgeniczny (brzmi na tym albumie trochę jak młody chłopak), ale ma też w sobie coś, co nazwałbym krystalicznością, a także sporą moc. Teksty to typowe kobiece country, ale są chwytliwe, dowcipne i zwyczajnie ciekawe. Z jednej strony nie wiem, czy będę wracał, ale z drugiej naprawdę dobrze się bawiłem przy tym jednym odsłuchaniu i jestem pod miłym wrażeniem tego albumu.

Here I am stricken with the flu, or something close to it, and today's album is a country one--by none other than Dolly Parton in an era earlier than "Jolene", at least if I followed all of this correctly. Country is far from being my favorite genre, and in the haze I'm in, it's hard for me to find redeeming features to this apparently by-the-numbers record (always preferred outlaw country and honky tonk anyway). The opening title track is pretty enough, but Dolly's high-pitch rant on the livelier second track already gets on my nerves. More of the same after that. "The Mystery Of The Mystery" has strangely metaphysical lyrics, the cutesy yet groovy "Early Morning Breeze" displays strangely original instrumentation, not owing much to C&W, there is quite an original piano part on "The Way I See You", and "Here I Am" has a memorable chorus with soulful background vocals typical of the early seventies. Closer "A Better Place To Live" returns to the annoyingly predictable country shenanigans of the first side, unfortunately. Looks like, taken as a whole, the second side is whole different album though, and honestly, that's all for the best. I'm too much sick and exhausted to open my shakras today anyway. Going for a neutral grade here, just to err on the side of caution, and then I call it quits. Pretty sure there are a lot of typos in this "review" anyway, and honestly that's all that I can take with C&W today. Pity me folks. Leave a "like" button if you bear with my moaning. *Sneeze*! Dolly seems to be one of the sweetest, most likeable people on the planet but her voice and flavor of country has never really been my kind of thing. I can't really fault anything on this album, it was a pleasant but unremarkable listen.

I don't think there's ever been a more delightful song writer than Dolly. Such joy and wonder shine forth in every song. This is not just good country, this is great music.

It is a good album. The reason for my low rating is simply that it is not at all my style. I found that the topic of songs was heavily concentrated around family, which was nice, but also infidelity. I understand that it may be her way of navigating through these complex feelings; however, the way it was sung about did not leave me very comfortable. Otherwise, her voice is beautiful, songs are lyrical, but also quite similar to one another, which I think was another reason that prevented me from loving the album to its entirety.

Best: A Better Place to Live Worst: not gonna do that to dolly Liked songs: 60%, 6/10 Strong 3 I honestly wasn't expecting too much because I've never been a massive country fan, but this is a real solid album. The A-sides were decent but got me worried for the B-sides because they're always the worst on the album, but the B-sides on this album (and especially the last two songs) are the best thing about the album. Gotta love dolly too, didn't read too many of the lyrics but they seem to pretty cool (much like dolly). Almost considered giving it a 4 but there are some definite filler songs that drag it down to just below the 4 threshold.

Dolly Parton is a fantastic storyteller and you can hear the emotion in her voice. The songs were catchy and succinct but overall, I couldn't see myself coming back to this one.

It is followed by a story about an unusual love triangle (Dolly, traveling man and Dolly's mom) after which I have already found a lot of new respect for Dolly Parton. By the end of the album everything has become a little watered down (or my concentration has weakened), but this is still a very good album. Maybe not five stars (at least not to me), but it deserves four without a doubt.

A classic country album with Dolly's sweet earlier voice. A real gem that I hadn't heard before. Despite having no smash hits on it, there's no disappointments. Will revisit and explore more of her earlier catalog.

I haven't listened to much country from the 60s and 70s but the times I have I enjoy it. Same goes for this album. Also, weirdly the story of Joseph and the coat of many colors was one of the more memorable biblical stories from my childhood

I actually just recently listened to this front to back for the first time a couple months ago. Dolly can truly do no wrong to me. I first started listening to her when I became obsessed with miley's younger now album, which features dolly. I went into a bit of a rabbit hole and was so happy to have done so. queen

Loved this Dolly album. I had only heard Coat of Many Colors (great tune) but the full album had a nice funk groove for a country album. I'd 100% buy on vinyl for a crowd-pleasing listen.

This album is good fun. Dolly is sweet in her voice is classic at this point. She seems to be on the verge of cracking and she always sounds young and sweet. Title track is my favorite but it's a short listen and the whole thing is nice to listen to.

This was a funny listen in the morning. Very much not what I start my day with on most occasions but it slotted right in effortlessly and even had me humming along to some of the songs. I feel like Dolly Parton is the woman version of Hank Williams or even Johnny Cash. The subject matter isn’t about killing people or being robbed in a bar, the songs are mostly about emotional states, but the simple song structure and poignant lyrics are just like her male counterparts. Coat of Many Colors (the song) is a touching tale about a mother’s love and being broke. My Blue Tears is a sad story of being betrayed, again, told to her mother. In fact, her mother comes up a lot in this album. The whole thing feels really genuine and hopeful at times. It made me smile. I’m not a country music guy but after some of these classics we’ve heard my opinion probably would’ve been much more favorable in the 60s and 70s. What a change this genre has taken.

Nothing less than a strong 4 for Dolly. She broke through at an early age through determination, grit, and a whole lot of talent. She has been impossible to ignore or deny her entire career. She has never really gone away , and like Elvis has never forgotten her roots and has given so much back to her home state and community. One of the greatest American singer/song writers of our generation.

Here she is indeed. Ten songs coming in under 30 minutes is all that’s needed to hit all the feels here. That voice. That pure sweetness. And all before the age of 25. Begs the question if I’m feeling this because of her recent resurgence? Or did Dolly never really go away at all…because the colors on that coat seem to shine more brightly today than ever before.

Truly the queen. What a great album, it’s just over too quickly. Actually that’s a pretty rare occurrence for records included on this list.

The title track is an unbelievable song and perfectly performed. I played it for my kids to try to give them some perspective and gratitude for everything they have. I don’t think they got it. Dolly is a treasure. Can’t say I loved the rest of the album but as a singer and song writer she’s great. I’ve prob said it before but I don’t see how she plays guitar with those nails!

Hey, this album is great! This is not my jam, far from a masterpiece, but Dolly Parton is a legend and it shows.

Sentimental, sweet, and authentic. Dolly is one of a kind and will never be replicated. Country has never been my favorite genre, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy some classic country every once in a while. This album isn't world-changing or anything in the scope of country at the time, but it's short n' sweet and I think represents Dolly among her best as a singer-songwriter. I enjoy this more over her slightly "pop"-ier stuff that would come later.

I'm not a fan of country music, but it was okay. There was something about her voice that was bothering me throughout the album that I couldn't figure out. It might have been her microphone, the way it was mixed, or maybe it was just clipping (she was kinda shouting). But there was something about her voice that wasn't meshing well with the instruments. Only 26 minutes??? Dolly, you spoil us. After yesterday’s SEVENTY SEVEN MINUTES of Xtina, this will probably feel like a cool drink of water. I’ve listened to more Dolly than I ever have in the last couple years, but this one will contain mostly new stuff. Deep tracks better deliver. This is just a nice song. I mean I’m sure it’s vaguely religious somehow, but it’s a sweet sentiment and nice little pop country song. Before pop country was designed to sell trucks and beer to morons. Holy hell. Kicking it up a notch. God I do like this era of country. Guitar rips pretty good, voice is full of energy. This one is quite fun actually. There’s such an understated folk aspect to this song. Sounds ancient which is a very good thing. Man, modern music is terrible sometimes. This is probably the best of the bunch so far. The weird polyamory diversion is interesting. By interesting, I mean highly out of place. This one is not hitting the same. A little paint by numbers country. The mystery of the mystery??? This might be what finally breaks my case wide open. I’ve been walking these lonesome streets for a while now trying to make a dollar out of two dimes and now this broad with a crazy coat says she’s got some mysteries to solve. This damned city never sleeps. That concludes the noire detective portion of this review as we wait for the direct god stuff to be over. Whoa. Is this a diss track? Man. I love these old jealousy ballads. Yeah, Dolly. Scorch that skank. Pretty sweet. Whoa, some introspective bass opening. Is this the 90’s?? Ah nice, more folk. Her voice is really quite good. Has anyone performed a wellness check on 1971 Dolly Parton? Did wellness checks exist back then? Was it a kick in the ass and a verbal teardown? Probably. This song is alright. She’s givin’ it large, as I heard some person say once. She’s really embodying that nonsense saying. Not the La La’s Dolly. You were doing so good. Less memorable. This album started off like a gentle freight train. Like one of those trains that take you through an old-timey amusement park. Gentle, fun, time to take everything in. AND it mixed in the thrill of big trains. Damn. Maybe I need to go to one of these places. Anyway. This album exhibited passion, capable singing and a lot of excellent songwriting only to be let down by a same sounding side B. Pretty good. I've been in my country bag lately, but this doesn't hot the way I really want it to.

The title track is one of the most iconic country songs of all time. There are some other good songs on the album too, but it does get a bit similar sounding. The stories told are well crafted if not a touch standard for older country.

I was not looking forward to this when it came up, despite having a soft spot and some nostalgia for Dolly. While I don't hate country outright, it's not my usual go-to. This was pretty great, though.

There’s no better illustration of Dolly Parton’s talent as a songwriter than the opening two tracks on this album. Coat of Many Colors is a heartbreaking story of growing up poor with a mama’s love. In contrast, the next one is Dolly at her sassy best with a cheeky tale of stepping out with a Travelling Man, with a killer twist. There are also songs of awful spousal abuse, spirituality and the simple joy of a flower meadow on a sunny morning. A pure gem!

I'm not a huge fan of country -- to say the least -- but it was nice to listen to; she knows how to write songs and sing them, and the background music is simple yet efficient.

I can picture her singing this proud in legitimately any location, matched to the band.

COAT OF MANY COLORS by Dolly Parton First album I listened from this list, and it's the first country album I listened fully! In just 27 minutes with only 10 tracks, honestly it sounds pretty decent. Sure, it sounds like any other typical country album, but it's the way that Dolly does it that I can't even explain, but to say "yo, this shit ain't that bad". The lyrics there do go hard, like the second one had a CRAZY twist, and the sixth one just made me wanna cry (canon event). Will I revisit this album again? Even a jaded country skeptic like myself will readily admit that Dolly Parton has an incredible voice full of personality. But is that enough to justify a mix of alright upbeat tracks and totally uninspired country waltzes? Kind of, actually.

my only flight out of state this year (it's been a busy time at school) was to visit my partners in Tennessee. we decided to visit Dollywood's adjacent waterpark Splash Country cause it was relatively close. it was... kinda nice? you expect an offshoot of a celebrity tie in theme park to be, like, Mickey Rooney potato restaurant levels of jank, right? it's odd. Dolly Parton grew up in the 70's equivalent of an Abraham Lincoln log cabin, started playing music at age eight, got into the industry, got really huge, and built a theme park ten miles from where she was born. it's odd to see someone do what they knew they were born for so well that they can build a theme park out of all the money they made from it. ...is there a God? i've doubted it in the past, but i really think God put Dolly Parton on Earth to do what she's been doing for the past half a century. it's a matter of predestination, fate -- the universe always meant to her to get this big. this is a roundabout way to say that the album is strong, sweet, and deserving of its place on the list. considering batting average, 70's country is better than 70's prog. fight me.

Another example of great Old Country(TM). Dolly is a true American treasure and she shines in this offering.

Coat of Many Colours 27 minutes of sweetly voiced country pop excellence. Although she doesn’t stray too far from traditional country structures on all 10 songs she has a brilliant way of subtly playing with the form, bringing in elements from other genres to gently add some colour and variation here and there - it really showcases all of Dolly’s skills as a songwriter, arranger and singer. Coat of Many Colours exemplifies that, a sweet sweet melody and a genuinely moving lyric, a story told with warm hearted succinctness and directness. Travelling Man is a great uptempo country rocker, with that slightly bluesy opening riff and tom tom pattern giving it an unexpected little frisson of spikiness. Great harmonies and lap steel on My Blue Tears, all done and dusted in 2 minutes. If I Lose My Mind is pretty conventional, but the sad sweetness of the words is complemented by the weeping lap steel. The Mystery of the Mystery starts off conventionally too, but the organ that picks up the middle verses is great, giving a swimmy uncertainty that matches the questioning lyric. I love the proper country structure, title and lyric of She Never Met a Man, the chorus melody doing that country thing of resolving just ‘so’. That bass on Early Morning Breeze is fantastic, again kind of playing with the genre a little by being in the foreground and carrying the song musically. Again a lovely lyric and melody too. That break and ‘bluuueee’ in The Way I See you is special, and the few bars of piano before the final verse and the outro is so tastefully appropriate. The gospel backing vocals on Here I Am are another great example of her subtly adding different colours and tones. Another great melody on Another Place To Live, a really catchy chorus with that marching drum pattern underneath and more great bass. Excellent uptempo way to end things. I don’t think this can be anything but a 5 - a gem of a country album but also just a sublime set of melodies and lyrics in its own right, performed brilliantly with such warmth and personality, with no fat or filler. Great voice, very talented. One decent song on the album. Will not be going into my collection.

I will always enjoy Dolly’s vocals. Always. Her voice is so vibrantly pure. I enjoyed this for sure. Traveling man is funny, coat of many colors is a sweet story, and early morning breeze has a unique and pretty sound. This was a good one!

I had very few feelings at all regarding this album. Listened to it top to bottom in one drive to work. I enjoyed the staccato bass playing, it was really tight, but other than that I didn't have any opinions to be honest. It's possibly telling that when the album ended and Spotify autoplayed Jolene, it was the first time I was excited in the album because I thought it was one of its tracks. It wasn't. It's fine. Dolly is an icon and the bass was cool but that's about all this album has going for it, from my perspective. No issues with it and nothing incredibly boring either.

Dolly Parton is timeless and has inspired too many to name. Many of her standards were immediately recognizable on first listen. While it's not my usual cup of tea, it absolutely belongs on this list.

This album feels like a cozy chat with an old friend. The songs are simple and honest, sharing stories about family and hard times. There's a hint of Emmylou Harris in the way it all feels real, like you’re just sitting and listening to someone who really cares. The music stays low-key, letting the vocals and stories take center stage. It's heartfelt, down-to-earth, and doesn’t try to be anything it’s not.

Pleasant and delightful. Some tracks had a more homespun gospel-sound to them, compared to what we've heard so far of the old school 70s country. Short and sweet, with a very compact run time, but enjoyable.

Good homespun country music from the Queen of country.

Overall: 6/10 Country really isn't my favourite genre of music and any artists making it needs something that stands out to differentiate them from the rest. Thankfully, Dolly stands out for two BIG reasons...her voice and her charisma! While it's not something I'm going to listen to a lot, this was enjoyable and I would recommend it to people who have a better relationship with Country than I do. Short, sweet, and goddamned good music. Dolly's straightforward storytelling style is very impactful to me, and while listening to this album (Coat of Many Colors, in particular), I was able to put a name to a feeling I have had for a very long time. 3.75

Classic old style country fare... if you like that stuff

So many great songs on here. This was a family favorite when we listened to it over the weekend. Dolly is an incredible song writer. While her voice is not my favorite ever, it's undeniable that she is a national treasure.

I have tremendous respect for her singing, songwriting, and positive influence on folks. But I have a hard time listening to her do 10 songs in a row. So I'll continue liking her by micro-dosing her music.

Dolly has a really nice voice, it’s a shame so much of this album is singing about two timers and man stealers. If I listen to more Dolly, I’ll skip those kinds of songs.

Definitely not my style, and not something I’d listen to on a regular basis. However, evaluating the album on its own merit, the songs are indeed very very pretty. I mean, it’s also some slappy happy nonsense, and even at 27 minutes long it gets tedious. But it’s calm, meditative, evocative, and actually some fine work.

Country is so polarising for me, and unfortunately this ended up on the wrong side of it. Not feeling this at all. It sounds like any other country music I've heard.

a bit quiet for me

Dolly Parton is skilled. I don't just mean in writing songs and singing, but she's also skilled in sincerity. Despite having her own theme park (which has some worrying-sounding stories) and being extremely rich, she seems incapable of sounding insincere. It's a skill, even though it's pretty clear that a lot of that sincerity is genuine. Of course, this album was recorded back before Dollywood was even a twinkle in her eye, when she was just breaking out of being in a pretty popular duo. Whether she's singing about the mystery of the mystery or a dylanesque rant about how her mum ran off with a 'Travelling Man', it radiates charm. The band keeps up too, and isn't afraid to be as stereotypically southern country as possible. I can't really think of anything more to say than that. It misses out on being ranked higher because ultimately I'm just not much of a country guy, and I prefer it when she blends the genres more Fave: Early Morning Breeze Least Fave: My Blue Tears Strong Bad Demerit Counter: 3

I love her voice. The songs are comforting, and I am happy to have listened to Dolly for a change. However, nothing really stood out to me or stuck in my head, which is why I'm only giving the album 3 stars.

WOW! Another artist I probably would have never listened to a full album from, had it not been for this list. What an incredibly pleasant listen. Comforting, to a level little music/art in general can reach. The title song is beautiful. She has some voice.

Creepy

Really nice album. I think her voice is either you love or hate it but personally I love it. I think she's a very talented song writer and knows how to tell a good story. One of the greats of the genre. Personal enjoyment wise I waffle between a 4 and a 5. Since this is her only solo album on the list (I think) I'm going to round up.

The stripped down songs show that 60s/70s country was much closer to the Greenwich folk scene than they ever would have admitted. Dolly's a true storyteller. However, early stereo recording techniques strike again! 'Here I am' has the kick on the right, rest of the kit on the left?!

Goddamn. I knew I would enjoy this; I've enjoyed pretty much everything I've ever heard from Dolly's classic period. But I didn't expect to love this album as much as I did. Just top-notch all the way around. Incredible songwriting, arrangements, performances, etc. It's so much more than just the fantastic title track. Probably the most unexpected 5 stars I've awarded so far, but very happy to. 5/5

This is just a good, fun, classic album.

Thoughts before listening: One of Dolly's classics. Its pretty hard to hate on Dolly Parton, and I'm sure this will be great. Review: This is a very enjoyable album from one of the biggest names in country music history. 50+ years later she is a household name, and the title track to this album is a staple. Dolly wrote the bulk of these songs and really set herself up as not only a star in the making, but also a creative force within her genre. 4-stars

I understand and accept that Dolly Parton is a wonderful example of a human being. Thoroughly decent, deeps her private life private and is an exemplar in her chosen art. Unfortunately, her chosen art is country music, which I really can't stand. The less egregiously country tracks (Here I am and a better place to live, notably) are sufficiently free of steel guitars, slide guitars and jew's harps that I can actually listen to them without pangs of genuine discomfort, and in these tracks I can see that Parton has an earnest, pure and powerful voice that would do so much better in literally any other kind of music. Star added for Dolly being wonderful.

awful depressing whine. Not her best work

I’m a bit partial to the odd bit of country music now and again. There’s quite a wide variety of styles available on this album from honky-tonk to Carter family style folky stuff. Really enjoyed Early Morning Breeze but not all to my taste.

Not really my bag, enjoyed Traveling Man but the rest didn’t grab me

So on a first listen, I found it to be one-dimensional but pleasant enough. I subsequently read the Wikipedia article for further context and listened again....the title track's subject and lyrics are undeniably poignant, the story itself enhancing the song to another level. Musically, it is still mostly uniform, but I guess that's the point with this style. I love the strategic placement of the kick drum on Travelling Man, with She Never Met A Man and My Blue Tears the other standouts for me.

Omg i loved this album so much. Some crazy dark stories on this album (particularly struck by the lyrics in If I Lose My Mind). So much good bass playing on this album, and I love how high it is in the mix. Early Morning Breeze wouldn't be out of place on Folk is a Four Letter Word. Great harmonies on my blue tears. Love the bass breakdown at the climax of Travelling Man. I will be listening to this album for a long time!

Familiar sounds from my youth. Quick listen but classics.

God bless this lady. I personally loathe C&W but her mix of traditional country and her gospel/church roots does not compel me to turn it off ASAP. Genuine feeling and emotions as she sings. Deserves its place here over others.

I love it! Coat of many colors (the first track) is my favorite song in this album! The storytelling in every song is amazing and feels so personal. The vocals and the instruments are amazing, but Dolly's vocal carries all the emotions, capturing the essence of every song and taking the meaningful lyrics to the next level.

Did not use a private Spotify. Another country album. It's Dolly, appreciate her voice, but it's not for me.

Never heard this before. I was hoping for something much better. I'm not a fan of the production choices. I've got issues with the mix throughout, and the arrangements don't maximize the impact of the songs. In particular, Dolly's voice doesn't sound that great. She just doesn't sound up to the level of the great female C&W singers that came before her like Loretta Lynn. There's a lot of better traditional country albums out there. Not sure why this one was included in this list.

This one is hard to rate. Her delivery and song writing skills are top notch. Coat Of Many Colors is a beautiful folky song. I personally don't like country music, but for the genre this deserves a listen.

Story-telling country songs across a range of genres/moods, all twangy and made with high-polish Nashville production, from poignant folk to pop bluegrass to piano ballads to high energy country rock. Her vocals in particular are the highlight with memorable phrasing, pauses, and overall a really charismatic delivery. The soaring lap steel soars the close harmonies are really affecting in the way they always are.

It was alright, not really my style of music

Dolly is always amazing and it was nice to hear some songs I haven't heard of hers since I was a kid. Speaking of which, it was rather interesting hearing the lyrics to "If I Lose My Mind" as an adult!

Too bland and country

Fantastic album! first song is an absolute banger, nearly brought me to tears thinking about a mother's love. A few good songs mixed in between, especially The Way I See You. Might play that one at my wedding eventually.

4.5 stars. This is a nice little album (<30 min). Dolly has some dark themes and lyrics that her high pitched voice belies. Standouts are "Early Morning Breeze" which is a beautiful tune and "Traveling Man".

A really good album, I love a bit of Dolly Parton. My favorite songs on it were Coat of Many Colours and Early Morning Breeze.

I listened to this in the background. Maybe that's why it didn't keep my attention. I have not listened to a lot of Dolly Parton but I am aware of her contributions to country music.

So I’m not really a fan of Dolly’s chipmunk stylings and I’m mostly not a listener of country. This album is more traditional country with a heavy folk influence, particularly on the title song. But I am a fan of ‘70s singer songwriter genre and I feel like this is a mostly listenable, even enjoyable, album on that level. 3.4

Dolly Parton has an incomparable career - she is a musician, actor, producer, and as a philanthropist (for her children's literacy project, alone, she is worthy of sainthood, and it is only one of her stunningly admirably projects). Coat of Many Colors was her eighth studio album. For her extensive career - 49 studio albums to date, and over 200 compilation albums - it may be impossible to rank any one album as "her best" or even "among her best." The album is on many "best albums of all time" lists. Ms. Parton has said that "Coat of Many Colors" is among the favorite songs she has written, and she has written over 3,000. The is a lovely album of country ballads, showcasing Dolly's incredible voice. At root, the basis of all of the accolades in Dolly's storied career is her amazing voice, and her ability to recount relatable, engaging stories.

Wow what a good entry. This child, I dont know if its a boy or a girl. looks like they have tears on their eyes. I guess it's about a memory, a very warm one. I kind of cried when I listened to 'Coat of Many Colors'. Good thing my mom is still alive so I was able to share this song to her and I also told her I love her. Better than never I suppose :)

I'm not a big country person, but that said, this album had some highlights. It helps that it's short, so I can quickly move on from the stuff I really don't like.

Lovely little album, doesn't outstay its welcome, is pretty samey it must be said.

Really pleasantly surprised by this one! Never listened to it, she's so ingrained in my head as an older, pop-star type figure that I couldn't picture her as a 25-year old country crooner. What a devastating title track! Impressive that so much of this was self-written. Really liked it!

Just a great little album. Nothing mind-blowing for me, personally, but I really liked it, as it's the type of folk and western/southern/Appalachian music I really like. a Classic

Dolly can definitely write a song, nice album

Always found country hard to enjoy, and this is no exception. Dolly's voice is quite annoying, but it has a couple of cute songs.

Some good old country tunes! Dolly is great, there were some meh songs but Coat Of Many Colors is a banger.

These are not my words. They are a review from another person from 2021. However, they perfectly describe how I feel about this album, and Dolly's music overall. "Full disclosure: I've never much cared for Dolly Parton's voice. I don't care for the way she uses vibrato and her voice is so sharp it could cut through steel. Which is not to say that she's a bad singer--her interpretative skills and phrasing are better than most and her pitch is dead on. It's really just a matter of personal preference, purely subjective. On Coat of Many Colors, while there is a fair amount of variety within the rubric of mainstream country (ballads, country-rock, etc.) it's all very generic, if well played but what I would guess are a bunch of Nashville studio cats. The melodies are nothing special either. The one area that Parton excels in is narrative songwriting. The opening two tracks, Coat of Many Colors and Traveling Man, are superb--I'd stack them up against the best of the giants of country music, like Hank Williams Sr., Lefty Frizzell, etc. Seemingly without effort, Dolly manages to cram in character writing, narrative, local color, comedy, and earned sentiment into three minutes or less! That's a rare talent and a golden ticket in popular music. Unfortunately, not all of the other songs she pens on the album are as magnificent. There's a nice ode to meeting God in the wonders of nature (Early Morning Breeze), but the rest of her lyrics could have come from a dozen other artists. To sum up, the terrific lyrics of the opening two songs overcome the bland music (although admittedly it might have sounded fresher back in 1971) and Dolly's voice (YMMV), but the rest of the album pretty much goes in one ear and out the other, not leaving much of a trace. Pleasant enough, but really slight."

Dolly is always great! Sounds great, lyrics are fairly simple. The music is what you would expect from a country westren album.

Dolly Parton is a great singer, and this is a well put together album of good country songs. Not my favourite genre, but I'd put this on again.

As over-encompassing as this list is, country music has a surprisingly small presence. And that’s not something I’m necessarily complaining about. Maybe it just isn’t a taste I’ve fully acquired yet. But I do like a country song here and there. And I don’t scoff at people who enjoy it like I used to. But it also really depends on what kind of country music we are talking about. I am an avid and impassioned hater of what the genre has become in modern times. There are few words I wouldn’t use to describe my distaste for the Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen’s of the world. But those people are not the subject of this review. Dolly Parton is. And with this one album, she did a better job at convincing me of the power of country than maybe any other artist before. She’s definitely one of the most iconic female music stars of all time. And it’s impressive that she’s been making music for nearly 60 years, and consistently the entire time at that. I’ll admit that my perception of her had been a little twisted up until today. Simply because she has leaned more into that aforementioned form of music in recent years. But her roots were pure and strong. This album contains all of the things I look for in decent country music. And it also revealed to me just how talented of a songwriter and lyricist Dolly actually is. It’s a lot more sophisticated than I presumed it would be. What really carries the album is her voice though. Her delivery accompanied by the incredibly smooth natural vibrato makes for some marvelous performances. They are powerful, effective and simple. How I’m scoring this isn’t determined by Dolly herself, but more so my attraction towards country, and whether I see myself coming back to this in the future. Which is probably unlikely. Rating: 6/10

Fun, enjoyable country

I had never heard any of the songs on this album prior to this listen. Her songwriting and voice are so recognisable and are so authentic on this record. It is definitely more my style. Her delivery is always on point even when I don’t enjoy a song. I only wish there was slightly more range but the shortness of the album made up for it. Decent. Listening to this album makes me think of browsing in a flea market or antique mall. Dolly is great but this album didn’t grab me.

The list continues to serve up classics. Not much to say but this is fantastic, well written and performed, and one of the few short albums I wish were (a little bit) longer.

Dolly’s gotten a lot of love in recent years, and she’s very likable and does a lot of good things. She also works HARD and is a fantastic song writer and performer. This album puts that on display.

Pretty standard Dolly album. The singles didn't really stand out to me or impress me all that much but the Nashville formula is so enticing and efficient that it's really easy to listen to, which is good.

Entirely underwhelming throughout. Would never play again, though nothing too offensive.

Durch diese Challenge lerne ich viele Platten und Interpreten kennen, die ich bewusst mit anderen Augen ansehe. Darunter zählt Dolly Parton. Sie ist eine außergewöhnliche Künstlerin und ziehe den Hut. Der Titeltrack ist sehr gut, aber dann ist mir alles zu sehr countrylastig. So ist es auch geplant, ich weiß. Aber hier ist es mir zu langweilig auf die Dauer. Dass das so ist, hat mehr mit mir zu tun.

The style is a little cheesy. But boy can she sing. She's got a fair amount of restraint but opens up and belts it at least a couple times on every song. And she transitions between those moods so casually and effortlessly that you can tell she's like a real 10/10 singer. This CD also has that other really crucial thing for an intro to a style I had not previously cared for - it's short. Like really short. I still don't really care for the style. But this is just good.

Not a fan

This was wonderful. I love Dolly Parton, although I haven't heard any of her catalog beyond her radio hits, and this album did not disappoint. The melodies and poetry were just about perfect. There is something so simple and beautiful about Dolly's writing and singing, and her band is clearly at the top of their game here. So, so good. My only complaint is that it's too short, so I'm listening to it again. Five stars, easily.

Since GTA San Andreas I knew I don’t hate country (thanks to K ROSE), but I‘m also not american and maybe that helps. This album was a great listen for me and I really like it. She has a great voice for this style of music and she’s still active today. Would listen again if I am in the mood for country.

Hard to dislike anything she sings.

Everything about this album was well done and as good as could be expected for this genre. Highest marks for a sound that I don't like to hear a lot.
