Best Track - "Here I Am"

I never really have any strong feelings either way about music like this. Some of the bass playing and especially Dolly's voice are very good here though and elevates this album. A high 3

Surprisingly funny, some classic tunes. Love a bit of Dolly.

Title song is a classic. I remember hearing it as a little one and wanting a coat like it myself. "A Better Place To Live" shows Dolly's been true to herself for a long time. All that said this album lands differently to 2025 me than 1975 me, as it should.

Schöne Texte, nervige Stimme

I don't like Country. But I dlo like Dolly. The world needs more Dollys.

Easy listening old country music. It contains some enjoyable and funny songs

Okay short album . Dolly parton has a great singing voice!

Dolly Parton

Not my favorit Dolly Parton album. But she still knows how to perform :)

good album

Great voice as always but the music is tiresome and repetitive. Glad it’s only 30 mins

Typical country album, not bad

Jolene Jolene Jolene!

Hmm, actually decent for C&W. Coat of Many Colours is sweet story, Traveling Man is a humourous track. Oh, falls off a cliff after track 2 - generic C&W dirges. Best track - Traveling Man 3 stars for 2 decent tracks

Found this to be quite sweet and pleasant, though I probably prefer other Dolly Parton efforts to this. An album that I expect I'll enjoy in the moment but quickly forget about.

Dollys a legend. Not my usual listen but an enjoyable time.

Highlight Song/s: Coat of Many Colors and The Way I See You One of the most majestic voices EVER! This album is nothing too crazy or radical but every album doesn't have to be that.

Fine voice.

As I continue to catch up on the 1001 albums to hear before I die series, I wanted to talk about some good ol' fashion Dolly Parton. I don't think Coat of Many Colors is anything crazy by Country and Dolly Parton standards, but it is still a solid album in her absolutely massive catalog. Thankfully this project is extremely short and to the point, despite it not having any of Dolly's best written or performed songs in my eyes. It shows her at one of her creative highlights but I wouldn't call this one of her best releases out of the very limited stuff I've heard. It is good, but don't expect a masterpiece here unless you are a ride or die for this country gal.

Respect to Dolly Parton, her voice is iconic and her songwriting can be brave, but... when I tell people I like country music and they roll their eyes, this must be the kind of thing they think I'm talking about. It's not.

Good album. Not my favorite Dolly album though.

Dolly e ein søting hu Beste sang: Coat of many colors

Despite my previous comments about country music I don’t mind some of it. Dolly is definitely one of the best of the genre and this album was a pleasant listen. Certainly also helped by being under 30 minutes, but it also sounds much better than some of the others that have been on this list.

It's really hard to separate this from my preconceived notion of what it was going to be like. She's got a great voice but the songs themselves are a bit hit and miss. I'm not 100% sure whether "Man will seek the mystic rails of the mystery" is deep or doggerel (though I've got a suspicion.)

In the end can't bring myself to score Dolly a 2 but I was tempted. Just didn't click with me

I always think of Dolly Parton as a character, or even a caricature, rather than an artist. That is quite unfair of me, and mostly due to never really listening. I liked this.

5.5/10 Highlights: Coat of Many Colours She Never Met a Man

Was not to my taste, but didn't hate it.

She’s a great singer/songwriter and this was about what I expected

Nice album and good to listen.

This is good. I want to like it more. I believe that Coat of Many Colors and The Mystery of the Mystery are two of her best songs. I would rate it a 4 but I can't quite get there and believe that to rate it that high would be being subjective due to my feelings about the paucity of country music on this list.

I liked it. Should check out more dolly. Damn tho she’s got almost 50 albums 😱

Yipp yee yip yaw

Not my cup of tea, but she writes a good song. She is what she is and thats ok. Guilty pleasure this was

Given these sweet little ditties, why are American hillbillies so, 'muh guns, muh racism, muh Trump'? Obviously not Dolly herself, she's a sweetheart. They ought to take notes from A Better Place to Live. This was surprisingly much better than I expected. Quite upbeat and because it was short, it didn't become repetitive and annoying as country is. Not something I'd choose to listen to, but really, she's okay.

Lovely, few hits

Songwriting isn't super strong, but Dolly's charisma makes up for that to provide a pretty good listening experience

her voice is so charming wtf a few cool songs but most of them are just kind of fine.

tbh i needed to put more respect on dolly's name

I always considered Dolly Parton as a country singer and never gave her credit for being songwriter as well. Many of the tunes on this album were written by her. Some of the tracks tell little stories, which were enjoyable. Overall this short album was pleasant listening standard country music.

Hello, Dolly! We all love Dolly-the-human, but do we love Dolly-the-album? We think it's OK. Yet another album that evokes... Children's Favorites. Nice messages, very inviting. Highlights: 'Coat of Many Colors', 'A Better Place to Live' (surprise surprise, I like the la-la-la-las)

Fine I think? Honestly I wasn't really listening. Sorry Dolly. 3/5

Not really my favorite style but some nice tunes nonetheless such as here I am. Reminded me a bit of Janis Joplin at times. Some songs are such timeless style defying classics that it feels almost like AI lol

Was alright, but I didn’t love it

You get a steel guitar, and you get a steel guitar! Lots of songs about love and heartbreak; classic country/western music and themes. Dolly has a nice voice and is a documented wonderful person, but I can't give this more than a 3/5 due to the simplicity of the music and basic formulas of each song.

Classic Dolly listen, quite the variety of subjects, good songwriting, music sounded good, just not my jam

This one is good. Not my type of music but it was good enough to listen to and enjoy. 3 stars.

She has an amazing voice. A great classic country album.

Dolly's voice is not my cup of tea, but you can see why people love her so much.

There has always been something about Dolly's voice that feels close to Alvin and the Chipmunks. I loved Alvin and the Chipmunks

I feel almost unqualified to rate a legend, knowing what great things she had coming. I heard elements of mountain music, gospel and the steel guitar that makes it classic country, with the storytelling that makes it classic Dolly, but nothing stands out as much as the title track.

Good classic country. Nothing to hate here. But not enough to make me listen to it again.

Like with most Country on this list for me, it's cozy and reminds me of Fallout New Vegas and GTA San Andreas. Make me nostalgic. have built up a Pavlovian response to slide guitar haha It's not amazing composition wise for me. It is a Story based genre like blues, folk and similar genres; and I'm not a big lyrics listener. But the music put me in a nice mood and Parton has a beautiful voice. She definitely influenced allot of country singers

Dolly is a national treasure and I had high hopes for this album. Especially after the first track, I really liked that one. Unfortunately many of the other songs didn’t live up to the title track. I’m going to say 3+ stars, but not quite enough to round up to 4.

I mean it’s Dolly so it’s an automatic 3 stars, but it’s not an album that I’d put in heavy rotation.

In general I liked bits and pieces of it and I do like Dolly's voice but a good piece of it just kinda went in one ear and out the other. If the instrumentation had been a little more dynamic I probably would have liked it more....

Solid Dolly Parton

Surprisingly good album. Distinctive voice and sound. Some tracks stronger than others and enjoyable.

6/10 Favourite: Coat of Many Colors Least Favourite: She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like)

Obviously better than typical/modern country sounds. This album tends to fall in to the pattern of Dolly singing something that is soon followed by a chorus, which gives the songs an all too similar feel. Traveling Man was the stand out as its subject is quite entertaining and it breaks out of the pattern the rest of the album follows. I can see why Dolly gets to have a theme park and sell cake mix.

It’s fine.

3. maybe needs more listens

A nice, easy listen. Classic country western music with great storytelling.

Not really my style but I enjoyed it. Clear lyrics, kind of catchy. Especially enjoyed traveling man

Lovely voice and enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

det här var ändå najs. känns inte renodlad country men jag kan ha fel

It's pretty shit, but I can't give Dolly less than a 3.

Helt greit country-album

Great country album

Classic Dolly

Yeah, she's pretty good.

3.5/5. Redelijk

Not my favorite genre of music, but Dolly is a such a gifted storyteller that I enjoyed it anyway. Traveling Man added to Liked Songs.

Not my favorite (probably just my mood today) but Dolly Parton has such an incredible voice. I need to add this album to my lazy summer day rotation.

I generally do not like country, and this 1,001 experiment has taught me that I generally don't like singer-songwriter/folksy music. I also hold a general distain for a vibrato. And here we are with what is basically a combination of those genres featuring a vibrato. But it's Dolly Freakin' Parton, y'all. And it's Dolly Freakin' Parton's favorite song. So, while I don't particularly enjoy it, it is undeniably really, really good. Influence 4.5, hits 3, quality 4.5, I just can't do better than a 2. God, this thing needs half stars.

It's Dolly! Dolly's great, but I really wouldn't ever choose to listen to her music.

Dolly <3

Standouts Early Morning Breeze

Bien sabrosito. Me dió como ganas de irme a una granja a criar vacas y cochinos

Dolly has a great voice and it shows on these songs. Having said that, the album is pretty samey - there’s a lot of steel guitar and fiddle going on. A lot of the songs are even in the same key and most are pretty simple 1-4-5 structures. Notables include Coat of Many Colors, My Blue Tears, The Way I See You, Here I Am.

7,2/10

Not a bad album. Dolly Parton can sing, but it's just not music I care to listen to. 3/5

Favorites: Coat of Many Colors, The Mystery of the Mystery, She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like) I want to thank the state of Tennessee for Dolly Parton. Even though I'm not the biggest fan of country music, this album gave me a sense of comfort that made me feel super warm inside. Her voice and songwriting is so charming, and she was able to put so much of her charm in a mere 26 minute long album. So iconic. 7.5/10

Solid country album. We enjoy some classic country. The common issue, however, through most of them is that all the songs kinda sound the same-y. I guess back then, country artists didn't like straying from the formula too much, and lots of the album tracks (including on this one) follow the same structure, the same major chords (in occasional differing order), and the same instrumentation. That being said, I still like country and it's a good album. Just nothing spectacular.

C'est du bon country mais vraiment pasnl convaincu d'y retourner. La première toune est bonne La deuxième est dans un style emprunté de Dylan fin 60s.

норм.

Can’t really knock Dolly can you

I've never listened to this album (9). I love Dolly! It was a good one, but a bit short and not the most memorable tunes of her catalogue.

Sweet and pleasant enough.

Not my thing but good for what it is and she seems like a very good egg.

Der unverwechselbare Dolly Parton Sound. Ist angenehm zu hören, wird aber nicht in meine Highlightsammlung kommen. 3/5

8/29/25: Not gonna lie, although I love Dolly, I was expecting more country disappointment. Ugh. Just men. Always gotta ruin everything. Anyway, next time let me just sit down and kindly shut the fuck up because oh my. I’m moving my Caucasian hips left and right restoring the smidge of Honduran left in me. YEEEEEE HAW. She really knows how to pull you in and just convey her emotions to you. Her twang. It just brings warmth to my heart. #gay4dolly

Not a country girl, but this is nice

Country classic. Short album but cornerstone of female country musicians of the time and future. Considering it was up for CMA country album of the year thought I would recognize more than the title song.

One of the joys of this app as never heard of this album, let alone would have played it.

Never really listed to Dolly she's pretty enjoyable but dude country better

There is a reason that Dolly is so beloved

This shit is damn good. Would love to hear it on a scratchy record. Good stuff dolly. I rate this a 3.5 (above Willie), but can’t do halfies

Caca i do't like it

Dope for country.

Pretty solid and a short runtime too which is always a plus. It got a little worse after multiple listens since everything sounded the same. Luckily, Dolly carries with her vocals and songwriting so there wasn't anything to hate. Top 3: Coat Of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze, and The Way I See You 3.50/5

Я поважаю Доллі Партон, але такий кантрі-сторітелінг веселий мені не те щоб прям не подобається, але й якось прям кайфанути від такого не можу.

so upbeat and fun

I am not a fan of Dolly Parton. It’s mainly her voice which kinda grates on me. I’m also not generally enamored of her as many others seem to be. That all being said, this was a fairly decent listening experience. I really enjoyed “Traveling Man” a lot, but it was an outlier in style to the rest of the record. There were many well written and performed songs, but by the end it sort of devolved into positive affirmation tunes that I didn’t really care for. I’m giving it a 3, but it’d be a four if I could just tolerate her voice more than I do.

Well I'm giving this classic country album my top rating (which is three stars, as I can't see how anyone could like country music enough to give more than three stars to it). I particularly liked the song about the travelling man who went off with the mother. I may have even heard the coat of many colours song before!

Always a pleasure to listen some classic Dolly.

Some solid country pop songs on this. Some might be worth a second listen.

First listen

Outstanding first song, the other ones are nice.

Good LP. Not my style

Ganz nett und gefällig, aber ein bisschen zu lieblich/harmonisch.

Dolly’s voice soars in this sparse but pristine gem from 1971. Her songwriting range is exemplified in “Coat of Many Colors”, a narrative about the richness of love and self-worth versus “traveling man” about a mom’s betrayal of a daughter with a two-timing man. I was unaware of this album before and I feel a surge of appreciation for Dolly’s songwriting and vocal talent after listening.

What dolly parton does in the album (in terms of sound and style) she does very well but there is a definitely a lack in variety.

it's also repetly but was a good álbum

Excellent singer / songwriter mostly about peace and love, but lots of country twang.

Coat of Many Colors...meh. Nice story. Traveling Man...dynamic. I actually believe her. Johnny Cash-esque storytelling. Hello Early Morning Breeze bass line. The Way I See You...turning point on the album. More poppy country. Could be a chart topper in the early 90s. Beautiful song. Just kinda boring, musically. Same cookie-cutter country from the late 70s-80s. Lyrically ok.

Out of this album I’d only heard Coat Of Many Colors before so listening to that and then Traveling Man right after was so fucking funny. Best song: Coat Of Many Colors Notable(s): Traveling Man, She Never Met A Man

The title track is a pretty powerful song and relatable probably if you came from humble beginnings or maybe were raised by people that came from humble beginnings. Dolly is another one that (like Ray Charles) sounds pretty much effortless and clear with how she sings. Not really my type of music, but I can definitely appreciate and recognize the talent.

Dolly Parton is surely a great singer, but this album reminds of cowbells just a little too much. I don't have a problem with listening to any song on this album, but when they are in a consecutive line I don't hear many difference in them. Like most of it starts and ends the exact same way🤷🧑‍🌾. Favourite song - Coat of many colors

Was ok but not the best

Nice stuff

Pretty boring album, title track and Here I Am are bangers though. 6/10

Ese año Dolly publicó no uno, ni dos, sino tres álbumes: este y The Golden Streets of Glory y Joshua . Incluye un clásico como la titular y autobiográfica Coat of many colors. también My Blue Tears que luego versionaría en su disco con Emmylou Harris y Linda Ronstadt, Traveling man (nada que ver con la de la CCR) un temazo estupendo o Here I Am. Otros temas que lanzó fueron She Never Met a Man y The Way I See You. Se trata de un disco especial, pues fue un retorno al éxito y despegue para lo que vendría después.

Easy listening

Absolute icon. Fun to hear the early days

3/5 Young Dolly is definitely more on the country side that she will be with future songs like 9 to 5. But she still shows off her singing chops and the songs are pleasant to listen to if a bit sacharine. Favorite track: Coat of Many Colors

First track is a gut punch. My goodness its beautiful. Album shifts gears after that with some Honky Tonk Country via Travelling Man and it seems some normal transmission. I'm not a massive country fan but this one brought back some memories of my late mother, mostly the lyrical content. + 1 star for that Dolly. Coat of Many Colors was the Gem.

And people say she’s just a big pair of tits

Only really knew a couple of Dolly Parton’s biggest songs going in (and none of them on here) but this was really decent. Lean and super melodic, deceptively simple, this was a real easy listen even though I don’t normally listen to any country.

A great country album. Very high three for me

Enjoyed this, just didn’t have any tracks that grabbed me

if i'm being honest i probably won't listen to it again which means i'd usually give it a 2, but i think that undersells it

This album is very quaint. That's the best word I can think of for it at the moment. Just kind of old-timey little country vignettes that are short but pleasant to listen to. It's your typical old school country fare. You know what you're getting with Dolly and it's pleasant and doesn't overstay its welcome. Standouts were "Coat of Many Colors," "Traveling Man," "She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like)" and "The Way I See You." I enjoyed this album, but probably wouldn't listen to too much of it again on purpose. Wouldn't complain if it was on though. 3 stars for me but really really close to a 4.

Dolly telling stories about men. One song really grabbed me and that was Early Morning Breeze, that bass intro was gorgeous.

Lamentablemente gente soy un chico country y no le puedo ir en contra a dolly parton, no es su mejor disco y temas pero siempre tiene un no se que que me atrae.

An icon, I don't hate it, I don't love it. It's as 3 as it gets.

Dolly might be the female equivalent to Willie Nelson lol everyone loves her and she is just a good person and she's been around forever! I love me some dolly and she is a great country singer and she is beautiful! This was a pretty good solid fast album!

This is my first Dolly Parton album to listen to. I'm not exactly a fan of country music, but Dolly's a legendary icon. Not an album that I'll add to my rotation, but can't deny the reason for her legendary status. Also, there are a lot of songs about "Momma". Best Songs Coat of Many Colors If I Lose My Mind Early Morning Breeze Here I Am

Good intro to dolly parton, a bit too country old school for me but good background music 5/10

Off the cuff remark: Another country artist I want to like, and she gets closer than most. Often quite funny as well as bitter in her tales here. Standout track: Early Morning Breeze stands out as a little different Revisits?: Unlikely to choose it, but if it's on it might be nice in the background, at the right time!

Some classic Dolly Parton songs and some lesser known but good ones too. This is a great album if you like Dolly's work. Reminds me of when I was a kid in the 80's and she was super popular.

Whilst I probably didn’t care for most of the songs on this album, I adore Dolly’s voice. It’s so unique and amazing to listen to. I don’t care what she’s singing, I’ll listen to it. As for the actual album, it’s mostly kinda meh country but it gets 3 stars because I could listen to Dolly sing mediocre country songs all day

A vibe in many ways. Nice to get to know the title track.

Cava album! Niet per se mijn ding, maar aanhoorbaar. 2.6

I'm not really a country music fan but this is REAL

I'm kind of whatever on this

Short but good. Really enjoyed the first couple of songs.

Strong 3

The coat of many colors indeed. It has a '70s vibe, gospel sound, and country roots by a powerhouse of a woman.

An unfortunate truth of many a Dolly album -- the ratio of killer to Nashville by the numbers filler skews to the latter. While this album fares better than most - the first three tracks are far and away better than the back half with the title track reigning supreme. Still - a hot to hear.

Lovely voice and storytelling. Dolly's charm comes through on every song.

I had high hopes after the first few tracks, but it loses steam pretty quickly.

Old School country. Light on the music side which requires her voice and "stories" to carry the day. Dolly has a unique voice but it is far from great and her 'storytelling" is solid but quite simple. But man what a career. 2.5 rounded up to a 3 because she is so damn cool.

The title track to this album is, of course, one of Dolly's all-time classics, and apparently this album as a whole is also regarded as such. I'm not sure if I am completely sold on the rest of the album quite so much. "My Blue Tears", "Early Morning Breeze" and "The Way I See You" I do especially like, and to a lesser extent "The Mystery of the Mystery". "Traveling Man" and "She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like)" fall flat for me. The remaining three tracks I don't really feel strongly about. On this album we do have a song that is one of her most famous and one of the best showcases of her storytelling talents. There's also on several songs the lovely ability to evoke romantic and familial connections and connection to nature through very simple lyrics that I consider characteristic of Dolly's music, and her lovely voice throughout. But on an album that's only half an hour long, only about half of it is really good material to me, which seems like not a lot. Unfortunately I don't think I can go above a strong 6.5/10 here.

While I'm not much of a fan of country, I have to commend Parton's storytelling. Her lyrics paint interesting stories and make the songs interesting enough to keep going. The album itself is pretty short, and all the songs pass pretty fast too. All in all, it's a pretty easy listen. If you don't like country, this record likely won't be for you, as it leans very heavily on the classic country sound, as trademark as it gets for the genre. Parton's singing and songwriting make the record worth listening to, even if I won't be coming back to it any time soon. The standout track was "Coat Of Many Colors", as it tells a moving story about her and her mother. "Traveling Man" was also nice.

Dolly is awesome, but I'm not sure about this one.

Not the biggest fan of country but I liked this, great vocals obviously and some really nice storytelling. Wasn’t blown away by the instrumentation most of the time but that’s understandable when the songs are basically carried by Dolly Parton’s vocals and guitar as-well to be fair (and the lyrics), it sounded a little like generic country but just much better for the most part and for 1971 it has definitely aged well. Also, 1 minute shorter than pink moon which is crazy. Favourites: the first two songs. Overall, 6/10.

Better than I expected.

Not my kind of music but it's well-made and short Favorites: Travelling Man

Honestly expected a little more but I enjoyed it

I honestly expected to enjoy this more overall but it was still good.

dark & charming

Nothing super memorable on this album for me

3.5 stars. Some good ones on here. Traveling Man is a blast. A better place to live, cheesy but accurate, if only people understood that one. She Never Met a Man was great. Love that you can clearly hear the bass and it is a driving instrument in a lot of these songs. Would listen again.

Doesn't miss but sometimes a tad boring

I know I'm going to sound hypocritical after my previous review, but I enjoyed this. It's still old school twangy country but it's so much more enjoyable. It's more fun, it's more upbeat, it's livelier. Also Dolly Parton's vocals, which I've always loved, absolutely shine through here. This album has just reinforced my opinion that she's just a bloody good singer and songwriter. She's got a great vibrato, her voice could cut through glass, spot on pitch. She's just great. My favourite track is 'She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like)'. It's a slow ballad and Dolly sounds fantastic. You can always hear the emotions in her voice when she sings. She manages to take a repetitive and pretty boring genre and makes songs that are poignant and fun, and her vocals only add to the tracks. Now, again, this is still old school twangy country, but the run time is only 27 minutes long so before it starts getting a little too samey, it's over before you realise.

This is a quaint little album, really feels like looking into another lifetime. But I know Dolly is one of my mom's favorite people so I suspect that it can't be too far removed from present day. I think the messages are pretty timeless, even if the specifics are a little dated.

121/1089 - Sounds like she's singing through a fan. Lots of songs seemed to blend into eachother but it wasn't bad.

I'm not the biggest country music / Dolly Parton fan, but I liked this one. 3.5 out of 5

It's pure.

Ja wel oke

Classic Dolly album. Quirky and upbeat. Lacking the religious vibe that came later as she aged. This is a good thing.

Very solid album with fantastic songs, as to be expected from Dolly Parton. Top 5 (no order): Coat of Many Colours, She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like), The Mystery of The Mystery, Early Morning Breeze, A Better Way to Love To be honest I don't have much to say about this album, it didn't blow me out of the water or anything but it was definitely great. 7.5/10

I grew up in a Northern Ireland household who loved their country music - Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Charlie Pride, Johnny Cash - so I have an affinity to a lot of the music. But, while she has become an icon, I always found Dolly a little bit twee, a little "Aw, shucks". Listening to this album again has not changed that. The songs are earnest, and I am sure they come from the heart; the playing is excellent and shares a lot with music that I love, Gram Parsons for example. But it is just not for me.

Found out last night while listening to this album that it's my FIL's favourite Dolly Parton album. I liked the first song. The bass in the second song was a groove, but the rest of the album sort of all blended together. The shortness definitely helped this album, as it's not something I would put on myself.

Honestly, I thought I'd hate it more given my past with country music. But I actually didn't mind my time with it. Maybe because it's only a 27 minute album and I didn't feel like it dragged on. But each song was unique in its own right and still flowed well together. It's a well put together album.

Not a genre I enjoy, but older country is more palatable. Dolly is a treasure so I can't go lower than 3.

I've never been super high on Dolly Parton, but I thought this was pretty good. Favorites were probably "My Blue Tears" and "Here I Am". 3.5 stars.

Unlike Dolly’s rack there’s only proper large banger here which is the title track and it’s an incredibly blubbery one at that too. Very beautiful sweet tale and a true heart tugger. There really is not the same level of richness stitched in the other tracks but it’s still all pretty nice and pleasantish for a country album. Travelin Man definitely taken a trek to various subterranean Bob Dylan lands. 3.5 stars.

Enjoyed it!

Fantastic, I had never listened to Dolly Parton before. I can hear how a lot of different artists took inspiration from her. Great sense of humor and musicality.

I don't love it but this is a good album in a genre I'm appreciating more. High 3

Music you'd her at grammas 30 years ago

This album was honestly okay, I was not expecting to like it too much but I was surprised by some songs. She is very wholesome

The title track is fun. Also, more rocking than most Country Albums I've listened to. Kinda gets a bit less interesting as it goes on. Not bad though.

Easy listen

Not my usual listen but can see why people like country music. 3/5

Very classic country, not typically something I would listen to. Dolly obviously has a great voice. The album is sonically very strong and easy on the ear. 7.1/10.

honestly no issues with the album. couple of songs i really like. just didn't jive 100% and is far from a daily listen

Not as good as her bluegrass stuff, but then I was always going to say that. Traditional C&W themes of please don't leave me, tempered with a bunch of religion, but it's Dolly, you know what you're gonna get. Nice though.

It's good country, but it's still very country. The start-to-Jesus time was less than a minute, the slide guitar remains slidey, and there's so many men than done her wrong that hey could start a football team. I didn't hate it, but it was just okay. Coat of Many Colours still hits hard though, no denying it.

I must be getting old. I rated this way higher than I thought I would have

There’s no doubt of her talent and there are 2 or 3 really well crafted songs on here

I was thinking this was pretty OK for its time, but the Sheriff's review made me start to think of this differently, and realize I was unintentionally grading this on an artificial curve. While this music nice in a sort of throwback, antiquated way - compared to the innovative and groundbreaking music happening all over the world at the same time, this is actually mostly just treacly sentimental bullshit. Why does almost every song reference her 'mama'? Too much mama. A friend of mine once visited Machu Picchu, the Incan ruins built in the 15th century. When I asked him about it, I expected him to be really impressed and talk about how amazing it was. Instead he shrugged and said "I don't know - the Romans built way more impressive cities 2000 years earlier." So Dolly Parton = Machu Picchu. Both are somewhat interesting in a vacuum, but considering the context and time period in which they were created, pretty underwhelming.

Great country album by Parton, top country sounding for my liking but it was lovely to have playing on in the background. 6/10.

Songwriting stands out, enjoyed the album more than I thought I would

cuteee…honestly every single song on here sounded exactly the same to me, but it was a pleasant enough song to begin with so i didn't mind so much. nice unobtrusive melodies. also don't worry dolly patchwork clothes are SO back.

This was cute but they mostly sounded the same to me, or sounded like other dolly songs. There were two towards the end I really liked that stood out, particularly “Here I Am” which kinda had some Janis Joplin vibes which surprised me. But yeah it was nice background music and I’m sure the lyrics are thoughtful and sweet but as we all know that isn’t usually enough to win me over anyway. *Best tracks: Here I Am, Early Morning Breeze*

Good traditional country, I like the bass line on early morning breeze. It's a good album, just not my cup of tea

I don't care for her voice but cant deny she’s been influential on country music. A 3

this might be the first Dolly I've ever fully listened to.

I didn’t love it, but I get why Dolly is known as one of the premier songwriters of her generation. The stories stand out. Maybe if I was more of a country fan I’d appreciate it more, but even so Dolly’s power as a storyteller excels.

Losta good country singing and strings

I love Dolly, and I love the song Coat of Many Colors. I appreciate that this was a short album, but I wanted a little more "oomph" in it. Not sure it's something I could really lose myself in.

Pretty good, got nothing else to really say, just listenable.

I absolutely hate the album artwork and the title track. Gross sentimentality. But . . . the rest of the album is not bad. Standouts for me are: Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze, and Here I Am. All three of these songs sound more like Dylan’s Nashville Skyline, and less like Gatlinburg. Also, Dolly has a bit too much vibrato in her voice for my tastes.

This is fine. I think maybe in a different mood or a different day I'd appreciate this more, because the songs are perfectly constructed and her voice is great, etc. And yet I found it kind of a slog to get through this, even though it's a 30 minute album.

Coat Of Many Colors - Dolly Parton I'm not a big country music fan, so I figured there'd be a cap on how much I'd actually like this album, but Dolly's songwriting ability really made this a more enjoyable listen than I expected While the slower instrumentals of this album don't do anything for me, they set the stage for Dolly well. Her singing felt too warbled and flimsy in parts, but she does a great job of making whatever she talks about sound interesting. From her experiencing a summer breeze to losing a man to her mother, she makes her subject matter incredibly interesting to me with how poetic and heartfelt her lyrics are I don't see myself going back to this, but I'm glad I heard it. 3/5

Soft and fuzzy, early morning breeze, the way I see you, are just like a hug. Country is not totally my jam but Dolly is so lovely and some of these tunes are just perfect

im not a fan of this type of music... but sure ill listen to anything once

folki-americana. Not my mood today

Country isn't a genre I enjoy. That being said, Dolly gets extra grace due to her legendary status and the amount of respect I have for her as a human. Her voice is crystal clear. It's interesting to hear her turn on and off her vibrato which can seem a bit frantic at times. It's particularly interesting to hear the blend of her straight tone and vibrato when she overdubs harmony vocals. By and large, the songs are good. As an early-70s album, it lacks many of the things that are grating about modern country. Even the cross-over songs here are more bearable because they sound like early-70s light rock. It's a solid 3 stars for me.

I love Dolly Parton as a person but I must admit...I'm not super familiar with her music, save for "Berry Pie" which I've heard several times. Outside of that, I know Dolly Parton for being one of the few leftist voices in a genre of music saturated with right-wing nonsense. With that in mind I'm excited to check this out! One of the things about listening to this record is that it has had me smiling the entire time. Dolly has a way of weaving comedy into some of her songs in a way that I just find kind of adorable, I think of the song "Traveling Man", which is a song that's not meant to be taken super seriously and I appreciate the tongue-in-cheek nature. This sort of spirit permeates the entire album in a way I appreciate. There's also moments where I feel like the lyrics can be a little deeper than you would expect them to be - I found the lyrics on "The Mystery of the Mystery". Overall, I'd say this is a really solid country album but probably not one I'll return to with much frequency. Standout tracks are: "Coat of Many Colors", "If I lose My Mind", "The Mystery of the Mystery", "A Better Place to Live".

genuinely decent album. i would not listen to it on my own and i think that’s mostly bc i don’t exactly like dolly partons voice but i do see the appeal. if i lose my mind, she never met a man, and early morning breeze were my favorites

Realest, classic country... just lovely and charming

Started off thinking this was going to be a 4 or a 5 however 3 songs in everything started to sound the same. Love the style but not much as stand out as some of her more famous hits (e.g. Jolene, I Will Always Love You). Going to check out 9 to 5 to get some more Dolly in my life!

It's almost impossible to listen to this while you're trying to do something else. Parton tells stories that just suck you in.

Coat of many colors - classic, no notes Traveling man - court/ourt'nt, beautiful My blue tears - beautiful harmonies If i lose my mind - "made me watch him live another/ tried to make me love another ... afraid of what I'd do" The mystery of the mystery - ??? She never met a man (she didn't like) - Jolene sequel? Early morning breeze - just a chill song about nature The way I see you - Here i am - she's lonely and really trying not to be A better place to be - let's like all work together man A solid album with one big standout in front. 3/5

Nice vocals. Dolly has such a beautiful voice. My favorites on this album are the first 2 songs. Still, country is not music that I like. But I see myself returning more to this than the "Trío" album, which I got before.

I don't think I've ever listened to a Dolly Parton album before! This wasn't a bad experience either! Her voice is so sweet, and she's quite a writer! I may have to listen to more of her albums. She certainly has enough (80?) to listen to!

Short and sweet!

You can’t really go wrong with Dolly Parton. She manages to make the most beautiful melancholic songs and pulls a few bangers out of her boot as well. She has stronger songs not found on this album, but this was rock solid.

Cute country

A very soft and very well written album. Don’t know if I’d revisit it soon but a very quality album. 7.5/10

3.75/5 beautiful vocals and accompanying instrumentals. Liked the folksy country more than I might have expected.

A lovely time

Who doesn’t like Dolly Parton? She makes great music, she’s entertaining, and she is just a good person in general. This is a good album, the tracks feel like they fit together snugly, lyrically it’s really good, i read Dolly wrote most if not all of this on her own and I must say she is skilled with the pen, she is a talented musician. I can feel the inspiration this album has on country stuff even now, sadly a good chunk of the stuff you hear learned the wrong lessons, modern country really pales in comparison to the old stuff. Hope there is more of her on this list based on her impact it wouldn’t suprise me if there is, and I’ll look forward to it. Rating: Good (Strong ☆☆☆) Favorite Tracks: Coat Of Many Colors, Traveling Man, and A Better Place To Live.

2.5 — didn’t enjoy much but I love Dolly so it’s rounded up

I admire Dolly Parton a lot as a human. And objectively, this record is full of goodness. Just personally not really my jam I'm afraid, even if I do like some of the storytelling.

The Good: A colorful album! The Bad: Wait, it is only the coat that is colorful! The Ugly: Wait again, it seems that the colors on the coat are nothing to be happy about… Wow… Don’t know what to say, except, I repeat; Wow. And that is not meant in the WOW, that was great… more like, wow, I always knew that CaW is all about misery, yet the “lord” will come and set you free. Not my cup of tea. Not what I needed today. Musicianship on the album is tight, songwriting is tight, vibrato in the voice is a little too much to bare after a while, and one can’t but wish that we’d be sitting on a porch somewhere, chewing tobacco, while sipping some moonshine out of a clay jug and watch cousin Jethro do a jig… I think that I should give the album a second spin, but maybe not on a dreary day, when the sun isn’t coming out, and sharp objects are too close to my exposed wrists. Though gut tells me I should give this 2*, I will grant it 3* due to Dolly being Dolly!

# Album Name: Coat of many colours # Artist: Dolly Parton # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Bang average. Just OK. # Top Tunes: No idea # Would I listen to it again? No

Lovely

Sweet. Wonderful story telling.

Rating: 3.5/5 (Rounded down to 3) Favourite Track: Here I Am Honourable Mention: Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze HERE I AMMMMMMMMMMMMM, OH HERE I AMMMMMMMMMMM Dolly has such a distinct vocal style that really shines in this album. Her talent combined with the storytelling makes this such an easy listen! Bonus points for the heavy bass :)

Correcto

First one is very sweet. Really cool bass on Traveling Man and love the TWIST. "That travelling man was a two-time lover, took my love and he took my mother!" - excellent. The rest are too country (go figure) except Early Morning Breeze which has a really cool unusual tune and great bass. The non-country parts of The Way I See You are great.

Coat of Many Colors 3.6 Traveling Man 3.7 My Blue Tears 3.2 If I Lose My Mind 3.4 The Mystery of the Mystery 3.3 She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like) 3.4 Early Morning Breeze 3.3 The Way I See You 3.2 Here I Am 3.4 A Better Place to Live 3.5 Score: 3.4

Lovely album as expected from Dolly. Personal favourites were Here I Am and She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like). I liked how short and sweet it was.

My queen Dolly I love her and everything she represents and she gives me a glimpse of hope of being interested in this type of music. But then again it gets to a point where how far can someone I love a personality of persuade me to like music I have never once enjoyed… I go back and forth. My queen.

Nice, if not all that memorable, tunes.

I had never heard a country album that inspired and kept me engaged. I still have not.

Fun album

A voice recognizable among all others. An album of ballads, not memorable but fine and pleasant to listen as long as you are in the right mood

Very pretty music. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would, especially Liked her Voice and lyrics. Some Songs Sounded to simmilar though

The title track is really good, a beautiful piece of storytelling about childhood. Some of the rest is a bit bland but I do think this album showcases Dolly's stunning turn of phrase and ability to write poetic lyrics. Some very nice metaphors. To take Early Morning Breeze as another highlight, I don't find it musically that interesting but she turns a countryside morning scene into something very evocative and visual. Nice Don't think I'll go above 3*, country is not my thing and I got a little bored even in the 27 minutes. But it's pleasant enough

Even non-country fans can find something to love with the album. Ever poignant as always.

Country

Some more Dolly. Sounded fine. Not much to say.

Album is over before you know it but it's a pleasant listen.

Conflicted on whether to give this a 3 or a 4, enjoyed it but doubt I'd listen again.

This was fine but I don't see it as a must hear.

No sé porque vuelvo a abrir cualquier trabajo de Dolly. No soy muy afecto a su género, pero la curiosidad maneja mis hilos esos momentos y me quedo

As Shirley would say, "That's nice!" Not a country music fan, but this was pleasant without being too cloying, and Dolly is a wonderful human (antidote to the Kanye/Morrissey/Clapton types).

Pretty good overall, esp if you are okay with Dolly's distinctive voice. I'm partial to her just because she's Dolly Parton, but don't think I'll be re-listening to this one.

Honestly just a nice little country album. Doesn't overstay its welcome, nor does it cheesy or overly patriotic like a lot of country does. Nothing mind blowing, but it's very solid.

Dolly is a country legend. I don't like much country but this was good.

Not for me but enjoyed the songs. Enjoyed far more than the more modern country songs. Can hear the roots of other genres like rock and gospel. Using my Goodreads book ratings - 5 It was amazing. could not put it down. lifechanging. would recommend. 4 Really liked it. would pull an all-nighter. incredibly useful. would re-read it. 3 Liked it. it was good. nice book. glad I read it. 2 It was okay. Liked a few things. limited useful info. wouldn't re-read it. almost couldn't finish it. 1 couldn't finish. Did not like it. Not my cup of tea. skip it. No Stars mainly non-fic and don’t want to rate people’s memoirs or dense texts.

There's some solid songs on here, and overall no complaints, but not really anything that made me want to listen again.

Clear vocals and story telling

Country music (especially this type classic country music, for want of better description) really isn't my thing, but I didn't entirely hate spending time listening to this album, seemed an interesting mix of soul and pop influences on some of tracks, with not too much of the typical cringe worthy country lyrics,⭐⭐⭐

solid country album (I'm not a country fan) from a talented singer 2.5/5.0

Country twang.. 27 mins? Thats short!

Dolly is so great - often replicated but its neevr the same. Her songs are so short and to the point, its refreshing. A whole album of Dolly is just a bit too much for me tho.

dolly parton lowkey freaks me out why does she look like that its fine. i tried to pretend that she was adrianne lenker, but then i thought about it and she actually sounds nothing like her beyond the fact that they both make country music (adrianne lenker is more of a singer-song writer folk artist but you know what i mean, right?)

Not my thing. I can acknowledge that it's good, but I can't 100% get into it. There are some good tracks though. Standouts: Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like)

Not a huge fan of country but if I'm going to listen to it, Dolly Parton from the 70s is likely not a bad choice. Favourite tracks "Traveling Man" and "Early Morning Breeze", tellingly the least country sounding. 3 known / 5 new

I'm not a big country fan, and this album won't change my mind, even if it does have a sweet flavor.

Classic album but not my jam.

Some brilliant tracks here. A lot more funky than I had expected.

Dolly and her quivery country songs.

Country is not for me. Album doesn't drag but is a little bit samey throughout.

Day 9: Coat of Many Colors - Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton delivered a brief, but enjoyable country album. Dolly Parton's status as a music legend is not disputable. I mean, how many musicians can say that they own their own theme park? Dolly Parton's pristine vocals add a nice touch to the relaxed instrumentation of her songs on the album. The lyrics to her songs are also really nice. This is a great album, but it isn't one that I would say is a must-listen. Perhaps Jolene would have been a better fit. I feel bad for giving Queen Dolly Parton three stars, but oh, well. Personal Enjoyment: 4/5. How Much It Belongs Here: 3/5.

Not my typical style but enjoyable

This is both very lightweight in terms of music, but really pretty fucking heavy on lyrical content. Pleasant but not amazing.

Solid old school country (which is far better than the new stuff) 2.5/5

Not a fan

We love Dolly. Complex relationship with both mother and travelling man.

I think Dolly has a beautiful voice. I liked a few songs, but, overall I don’t think it’s for me. I’m just not a big country fan.

Ça s’écoute mais je suis pas un gros fan

She is precious, I'll give her that. This is as about as good as country gets for me.

This is a very pretty album, and Dolly's voice is awesome. That said, it's just not my cup of tea. I appreciate the inclusion on the 1001, though, definitely worth the listen!
