Reviews (page 7 of 12)
Fun lil diddy from the queen Dolly. Not much more to say beyond that but it's charming and interesting.
Great album! Great vocalist, guitar player and songwriter. Liked her more before she became a mega-star. Nothing wrong with that, though.
Sweet voice - a little too munchkin for me
Twangy, short album
Classic Dolly
I don't have the best relationship with country and I'm not going to pretend that this has changed my mind in that respect, but at least Dolly has some personality which does shine though here and at least keep it interesting for it's short runtime. She's also taken some influences beyond country with Travelling Man (Dylan_ and Early Morning Breeze (Simon & Garfunkel) which elevate the album above more trad country affairs
love you dolly
had low expectations, but it was a good listen overall. had it for backgroud music and it was nice
Country.
Is this the best Dolly Parton, No. It was good because it was Dolly Parton and she is a national treasure.
It’s fine. 3.5 down to 3
Review: This album was definitely a pleasant surprise. I thought there was no way I would enjoy a dolly parton album but here we are. It does not really have any sense or originality from track to track but that is not necessarily a bad thing. She knows what works for her and that's what she does. There were definitely some good songs on the album my favorite being Here I Am. The vocals did not miss once and her performance on every song is very well done. I cannot hate on it for being what it is supposed to be but it is just not for me as much as it is for some people.
not bad. dolly’s voice is nice. i think there are some unresolved mommy issues here bc why did she reference her mother so many times. 3/5
Great singer, great instrumentation, amazing recording, just not my style of music. As they say there are 2 styles of music: Country and Western.
Solid dolly. Really nice. I wondered at first if I like pop style country more than I like the blues style country that is slightly more prevalent here, but it's all good. The 'never met a man she didn't like' song is musically excellent and it's such a shame the lyrics seem to be judgemental about a promiscuous woman (or sex worker, not sure)
2.9 2x short and sweet just dont see myself listening again
Not bad at all. I can see where she gained her status as a country legend.
An amazing person with a beautiful voice who makes music that generally isn’t for me.
All the songs are so country. A few of them sound too similar to me. She seems very nice though. Dreamy mind : ) I love Travelling Man!
fav songs: here i am melodic, traditional, tender 60/100
With a voice as sweet as a mars bar topped with candy floss and maple syrup it's hard to not be drawn into this album. But there becomes a point where the sweetness is too much and you want to digest it in smaller chunks over multiple sittings. It's a really nice album though.
C'est ok, heureusement que l'album était pas trop long c'est le genre de voix/style qui pourrait me faire chier à la longue
9 songs, 27 minutes....a perfection only achieved in classic country and punk rock.
Classic Dolly.
What the hell is going on with that travelling sales man and her mother?! Awful choice in men but shows that homemade gifts can overcome familial adultery. Sweet easy listen
The beloved Dolly Parton, in this recording from her early years , stands out for its simplicity while listening to the songs without losing sight of her beautiful lyrical effort, but also for her intense folk and country mood. Sweet melodies from the 70s in the familiar style of the beloved lyricist / composer / singer.
This was exactly what country music sounded like in my head.
That was OK. Travelling Man was a hoot.
Pleasant enough. Not always a fan of this era in country
Review - probably the biggest drop off from track 1 to 2 I've ever heard. Gets pretty rough from track 2 through the end of the album but then some bangers to close out (bar the last track itself). Early Morning Breeze is a bass-led country song - I didn't know they did those. Score - 5.5/10 Need to listen? YES
I love Dolly as much as the next person but I’m still not a country person. Mostly enjoyed this though, just not particularly my taste.
Great album with good songs, was just shocked that it ended so soon
Ugh Dolly my queen. The songs are structurally pretty simple, but her voice infuses them with a quality that’s so soothing and moving. A three almost feels too low, but I don’t see myself coming back to most of these songs. Nonetheless a really enjoyable listen throughout: probably a veeeery strong three overall. STAND-OUT SONG: “Early Morning Breeze” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Coat of Many Colors”, “The Way I See You”
Look - big respect to Dolly, but I won't play this again. Not annoying but not that enjoyable either. All power to her!
5/5 person, 3/5 album
Muy lindo :D
ok i enjoyed this way more than i thought i would.
She was one of the best of an era to straddle traditional and pop country lines. She’s got the trad chops here. But time has made her stuff still sound so clean. I need a little grit in my country.
I love Dolly however I was pretty bored for this album
On my personal list of 1,001 albums, you probably wouldn’t find a single country album. Dolly Parton’s *Coat of Many Colors* clearly illustrates the arguments for and against my stance. Why *Coat of Many Colors* belongs among the 1,001 albums: It is the trademark of the Queen of Country and, as such, automatically a legend that has had a massive influence on countless artists ever since. The title track is simply the quintessence of country music. Why I still don’t like it: Dolly Parton’s voice is unpleasant as soon as she sings with a bit more power—shrill and with far too much vibrato, so that she sounds more like a crying child than a singing adult. Aside from that, I find country music overall too naive and too boring. All in all, that’s three stars.
Actually a bit too country for me. The songs I like better are on other records.
My first real time spent on Dolly Parton. Enjoyed the story behind the title track, and Early Morning Breeze was probably the song I liked best.
some very nice songs on this, most of which I've not heard before. 3/5.
This is really standard country stuff, but I feel like it’s kinda saved by her voice. There’s something really compelling about her voice, and it works really well on the classic country instrumental. It makes the whole thing a lot more palatable, as well as the fact that it’s less than half an hour. It’s still classic country though. Favorites: Traveling Man, My Blue Tears, The Mystery of the Mystery
Ihan mukavaa, mutta ei iskenyt hirveän syvältä. 3/5.
Its decent country music, following in the Carter family tradition and not overly Nashville-ized (i.e. over-produced). It just feels a bit boring to me. Kinda generic, but maybe that's because Dolly has been over-imitated in the current iteration of country.
Fave tracks: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze. Hon mentions: Here I am Also, this album is 27 minutes long, so that’s nice if it’s not really for you. I love Dolly Parton as a person. I am impressed with her as a multi-hyphenate sensation and general delight of badassery. If she was a lesser person, I might not dig the music as much, but this is definitely a case of artist-as-person coloring the art in the best possible way.
Really enjoyed the first and last songs, and a re-listen increased my vibe with the collective. Dolly Parton is a babe!!!
Very good.
Dolly is a treasure. Not sure how often I'd revisit this record, but it was absolutely a delightful listen. Dolly sings and she restores your faith in humanity, if even for a few moments. Songs from this one: Early Morning Breeze, Coat of Many Colors, My Blue Tears
I listened to the last three albums all in the same evening and stylistically none of them were really my thing. This felt very traditional to me and unremarkable, but early morning breeze was quite pretty
Cool and fun
For a country album it was pretty decent
country music is not my cup of tea, unfortunately but lyrics are terribly sad, dolly who hurt you?
I actually quite like me some dolly
Fun album, reminded me of Johny Cash.
Dolly be partin. 5/10
Voice of an angel, but a voice of an angel only gets you so far in terms of a full album. Still really enjoyed being serenated by Miss Dolly. 7/10
consistent. but just not my taste.
This felt like a very quick album. Enjoyed it as it's a very inoffensive collection of songs. She's a great songwriter.
😭😭😭🥹
3.5
Great singer. Mediocre album. Nice songs that tell a story.
- It's nice enough, but I don't really love it. I like her voice in the lower registers but find it screechy and forced in the mid-high registers, where she sings most of the time, unfortunately. - The instrumentation is pretty uninteresting minus a few nice basslines, and the album is clearly American -- it could be from nowhere else. - Lyrically, way too much about "mama" -- I just can't relate with that kind of thing. But, I do like the sentimentality and humour throughout, and (especially) the first two songs are really great in terms of storytelling. - That all said, Dolly has charisma that shines through that still makes the experience enjoyable. - It's a 2.5 for me, but I'll probably round up because there are so few women on this list, and she's just so likeable. Also, the album is nice and short, and I really appreciate that after suffering through The Who's Tommy yesterday. It's nice to listen to while making dinner. - Also, something that bumps it up to a 3 is that I listened to the extended version of the album, and the extra songs are quite nice - more melodically interesting than most of the ones on the album proper and with some nice singing in the more soprano registers, where she loses the vibrato.
I mean it’s dolly and it’s country, they go together like cheese and onion
country is truly the art of storytelling america listen to your idols
Nice lyrics and stories. Not a big fan of this type of country music.
Pretty good! Might upgrade to 4* depending on how the next week goes with the ratings
2.51 sterne. schon schön aber für die heutige zeit wahrscheinlich zu eintönig über das ganze album coat of many colors aber hat gehittet
A great album by Dolly!
First Dolly album for me, not the sort of thing I typically gravitate towards but was intrigued simply because of how loved she is as a person. Many sweet moments, straightforward throughout, and rock solid as a whole. 1 listen Favorite Track: Title Track
Expectation: -> Dolly's another national treaure. I've listened to a lot of country music but no Dolly album until today. After listening: -> No suprises for a 1/1/71-released 27-minute country album. I'm not hearing any big hits here. Some fun songs, some sweet songs. Glad I listened but won't come back. Track ranking: Traveling Here Way Coat Breeze She Never Better Lose Tears Mystery
This was a really lovely album to listen to, if I'm being honest. There is a lot of passion behind not only the vocals but the lyrics as well in Dolly Parton's music. A lot of this album is Dolly Parton recounting times when she was younger, making a lot of the tracklist feel quite sweet to listen to. This is a very short album, so it's over quite quickly. I think this could have worked better with slightly longer tracks, but I do think they also work well as they are. I really enjoyed the opening track, 'Coat of Many Colours', where she spoke of a time when she was younger, when her mother made her a coat from rags; The other kids made fun of her, but she states that you're 'only poor if you choose to be'. I thought that was a really lovely line in the song, recounting that she may not have had much money growing up, but it was the love that she was given where she was 'rich'. Favourites: Coat of Many Colours Traveling Man Here I am A Better Place To Live
Nice. It disarmed me. I’m not a big fan of country but this was nice.
Clocking in a 27 minutes, it is really hard to connect with this album. Dolly Parton has a tremendous voice, but I just am not a fan of the genre or this iteration of it. I am sure country fans can show me the way, but until then... she gets a gracious 3.
Nice to get exposed to an album I did not know of. Can't believe DP was on her 8th studio album by 1971. A few nice songs, but this one is not for me.
Ok. Not any standouts to me.
Good album. Dolly’s great but I think she could have done with a Jimmy Webb or Lee Hazelwood or Bobbie Gentry to elevate the arrangements.
7/10
I get why she’s a legend, everything she does here is clearly intentional and well crafted. It’s too bad I just don’t enjoy it
Favorite Track: Traveling Man
Yeah it was good! Incredible singing, fun interesting songs, but not my jam
Not outstanding but very pleasant - lacks a signature track to my ears
This is pretty good, and I don’t like this type of country - Dolly is a legend
A short and sweet country album. Nothing too special, wasnt blown away by the lyrics or vocal performances. Found the instrumentals uninteresting. 3/5
I really like Dolly and I liked a lot of this album. It got a little tiring after a while, though.
Dolly sounds so sweet and wholesome here. And I like the Joseph metaphor in the first song. She definitely has a knack for storytelling, but this album does sound a little basic to my ears.
Love Dolly, but I usually listen to her hits rather than full albums. This album is a nice time, but you know that the hits are Coat of Many Colors and Here I Am. The rest are nice but unmemorable really. Still a nice listen of course.
Not a fan of this style of music but I gotta give it to Dolly, she’s got an incredible voice, an instrument itself basically.
13/04/2026 Sorry Dolly. Nothing really stands out for me here. Spotify listeners: 16.5 million
good ole dolly
A wonderful voice which does nothing to me.
I love Dolly Parton as a person and everything she’s done outside of music, but I’ve never really connected with her voice, and this album didn’t change that. Some things just don’t always mesh, and this is one of them for me.
this was nice and plesant. dolly's vocals are wonderful, the instruemtnals were nice. i really enjoyed 3 songs, the rest were good background music. 6/10
Not music made for me but I respect Dolly. I liked Travellin Man
Dolly Parton is very talented, not my music style.
Good album with good songs, but Dolly Parton isn't my type of music. I can definitely respect her though because she has a great voice and calcium cannons.
Dont love country but this was good hungover music for a Saturday
A title track receberia 5 estrelas tranquilamente. 3,5/5.
Very twangy
makes me want to drive through the countryside with some sweet tea.
Good old Dolly. Just a legend in her art. Not something I would reach for, but it was great.
Easy listening
Me gustó pero no me mato
No standout songs but no bad ones. Maybe could grow on me
Dolly Parton has that iconic twang. She sings meaning to her songs, but for whatever reason she doesn't land with me.
Early Country is better than early Folk... And that's why I have to give credit where credit is due and give DP 3 stars.
ok, better than current pop-country
Good old Dolly
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Coat of many Colors, Here I Am I still don't really enjoy most country music, but this could have been a lot worse. 27 minute album is short enough that its generally tolerable and there are some decent songs to boot. None of the songs are going to be joining any playlists, but I think in the spirit of listening/experiencing to new music, I was decently happy to listen thing this is a perfectly fine entry on the List.
Dolly Parton’s 1971 album leans into classic country traditions—fiddle, pedal steel, and front-porch storytelling—anchored by her unmistakable voice, even if a few more upbeat tunes would have added welcome variety. The affecting title track remains one of her signature story songs, while “Traveling Man” shows she can holler with the best of them and “She Never Met a Man (She Didn’t Like)” mixes sharp humor with sweet harmonies and pedal steel. “Early Morning Breeze” offers stripped-down charm with some surprisingly nimble bass, and “A Better Place to Live” brings a welcome shot of energy. Around the edges, Dolly throws in curveballs like the possibly-swinger-themed “If I Lose My Mind” and the piano-led “The Way I See You,” small touches that keep a warm, lived-in album feeling fresh.
I know of Dolly as a prolific public figure, but I've never really listened to her music (besides the obvious "Jolene"). She has a singsong, sweet, wise-sounding voice that pairs wonderfully with her storytelling capabilities. Her stories are at times sad, at other times funny (see "Traveling Man"). The songs are simple, but have nice melodies. I particularly enjoyed the style and bassline of "Early Morning Breeze". That being said, country isn't my favorite genre, but this was pleasant to listen to.
Beautiful songwriting, classic production and too much vibrato
Not my style but pretty damn good
I enjoyed this but I doubt would ever put it on intentionally….but I do love Dolly
It’s a nice, cozy little country album. I’m glad I listened, even if little stood out to me.
Very pleasant listen
ok
27 mins wow, this is fine not my favorite Dolly
Not really a country fan, so can’t say I will listen to it again, however it was very clear the message about growing up in poverty, and all the thanks she had to give to her momma
I really wanted to give this at least a 4 because it’s St Dolly!
She's a good lyricist, a good singer, a great person, but this album is just fine. That's a positive - these are kind of ur-country songs that're just nice to listen to, but again, just fine.
She really loves that coat! Overall too country for me in general tho
not my favorite country music styles but this was great and fun and I would prefer to be listening to this while wandering around Dollywood. Go Dolly! Love a short yet enjoyable little album.
A 3/5 from me is high for a country album. Nice songs!
Dolly Parton is the closest thing we have to a living saint, and I adore and respect her beyond words. That said, this isn't really my jam. I respect the craftsmanship - this is a woman who wrote most of her own songs (and wrote some all-time classics) and performed them at a very high level - but old-school country doesn't really grab me. Parton does a fantastic job of using her country dialect to make rhymes that shouldn't work work ("Traveling Man" has some great examples), and the backing band is rock-solid.
It’s a Dolly record but not the best one.
Title track was excellent. The rest of the album was good.
Album #43, Dolly Parton, Coat of Many Colors ⭐⭐⭐ I’ve always been a big admirer of Dolly Parton. She’s written some absolutely amazing songs over the years, and a couple of them are on this album. As an album artist though, I’ve never really fully gotten into her. On the surface this is a pretty simple country record, but it does take a few little turns along the way. Most of it is straightforward country, but there are moments where it moves into other styles. The Way I See You leans much more into soul, and If I Lose My Mind moves into more traditional ballad territory. A lot of the album really comes down to two things: Dolly’s voice and Dolly’s lyrics. Her voice is pure gold. She’s a fantastic singer, and the little bits of colour and inflection she puts into lines, the way she bends notes here and there, is genuinely beautiful. Lyrically she’s very strong as well. She’s dealing with some pretty big ideas here. The title track, Coat of Many Colors, is a beautiful song and one of the best songs about poverty I can think of. It’s also one of her most personal songs, and it’s done really well. She can be funny too. Traveling Man is kind of gross when you think about it, but I did find myself laughing by the end of it. There are darker ideas throughout the album as well. There’s a song about a mother running off with her daughter’s man, which is pretty bleak, and If I Lose My Mind deals with a woman threatening to kill herself if she stays in the situation she’s in, admitting that to her mother. These are heavy themes. Later in the album she moves more into her gospel side. I don’t usually mind gospel music, even though I’m fairly agnostic, but her personal religious outlook isn’t something I really connect with. I actually found myself getting a bit annoyed at times. The Mystery of the Mystery feels like a song about willful ignorance wrapped up in religious belief. I respect that those are Dolly’s beliefs, but it’s not something I find particularly appealing in a song. The closer, A Better Place to Live, also has a few lyrical moments that rubbed me the wrong way for similar reasons. That said, it doesn’t take away from the fact that she’s a fantastic songwriter and a fantastic singer. Overall I didn’t love the album and I probably won’t go back to it, but it’s still a solid three stars for me.
Cute little country album. Like her energy and interesting voice. Here i am and early morning breeze are fun.
Definitely not my cup of tea. Twenty year old me would have dismissed out of hand. Today me is much more open minded about music. Several endearing parts like traveling man ‘fetching water from the spring’ and story telling caught and held my attention. Popular music isn’t made like this anymore. 3/5
Joyful, just not my style of country.
i liked listening to it but i would not willingly listen to it again
09/03/2026 *1. coat of many colours - nice guitar. love the bass and the organ. really lovely lyrics <3 backing vocals are sweet. *2. traveling man - great bass!!! bluesier... love the guitar!!!! 3. my blue tears - like the strings... even though i'm really liking these songs, they've not got that spark for me so far... *4. if i lose my mind - slide guitar is lovely, especially with the strings. *5. the mystery of the mystery - slide guitar and bass great again! love the lyrics and backing vocals. *6. she never met a man (she didn't like) - ngl the songs are all sounding a bit the same now... not disliking it though :) love how dramatic this one is getting towards the end!! *7. early morning breeze - immediately a different sound. the fingerpicking guitar and bass together are great! wow!! 8. the way i see you - very sweet... this album sounds beautiful, but doesn't do much for me beyond that :/ 9. here i am - same as the last one really... her vocals are phenomenal in this one! 10. a better place to live - nice :) really liked this one, but something about it was just a bit same-ish throughout, felt it lacked some energy to push it into something i reallllly loved - especially with the last few tracks, it kindof just fizzled out for me. early morning breeze was a great changeup and probably my favourite off of the album! short and sweet :)
Not my prefered genre but have to admire songwriting and story telling in lyrics.
What a banger. Brilliant voice. Great songwriter.
Cozy and emotional, I like the songs where piano takes more of a forefront but she has a good voice and clearly feels strongly in her lyrics which creates an authenticity that supports the music.
Some fine country stuff and there was solid songs for sure but nothing to ride home about.
Good dolly album
Short but sweet. I was familiar with the title track but pleasantly surprised with the variety of the rest of the album.
country, prima
Strong vocalizations and soothing sounds coming from Dolly
I genuinely do try to go into every album open minded but, with a couple of exceptions, I really don’t like Country music. This one however I didn’t mind at all. A big part of it is Dolly Parton has a brilliant voice. Overall though while there weren’t any tracks I didn’t like it’s very unlikely I will ever go back to this. Top Track - Coat Of Many Colours
3+ Stars (9/15)
Dolly Parton выпустила «Coat of Many Colors» в 1971 году, и это, пожалуй, самый личный альбом в её дискографии.
It's nice
You are the sunshine of my life 3/5
A lot of songs about tragic and fairly inappropriate relationships
Fat tiddies
I grew up in a house where this album would be blasted on repeat, so I'm averse to a bit of Dolly Parton - that said this is her eighth album released over 50 years ago and she's still got the beans now, even I can't deny that she's one of the all time greats
Not really my thing, but not a terrible listen. Probably 2.5 for me.
Go get it Dolly!
Good but sounds the same throughout.
I guess
Dolly is a legend - such beautiful and thoughtful songs honestly. In terms of general enjoyment it’s middle of the road for me.
No boob visible :(
I liked this quite a bit
Söpö. Vähän liian kantrinen mun makuun mut ihan hauskan kepeä silti. Nypin ja kastelin kukat ja kuuntelin tätä. Kevät tulee 🌱☀️
Legend. Instantly identifiable. Icon. Also her singing is good.
Stabil, aber nicht meins.
A little too country for me, but I enjoyed it well enough. I can definitely tell why Dolly is loved. 6/10
Dolly parton's voice is exquisite, it has an uplifting quality to it I am fond of. Not quite, but it reminds me to Mary Hopkin in the effect it has on myself.
3.5/5. A fairly straightforward 70’s country album, however Dolly Parton is just a great vocalist and really sells any song she’s on. funnily enough though, I do not love the title track. it’s always been one of my least favorite big Dolly Parton hits. But the rest of the album is a good time.
A national treasure. I’d come back to this one.
I really like Dolly and have heard many of her songs but I didn’t feel this was my favourite album of hers. Some of the songs were catchy and the lyrics are always so interesting and fun. I would certainly relisten but it wouldn’t be the album of hers I would say is my favourite
A pleasant suprise
This was fantastic country and folk
That’s a voice suitable for the Queen of Country I did like this album, lyrics felt very personal in this one. Dolly’s vocals are outstanding as well; I’m usually not huge on country but damn I would listen to this 100 times over some modern bro country. Also wow 27 minutes for the entire album? That’s gotta be one of the shortest on the list. For better or worse even if you hate this album it’s over quick. I don’t think there’s a ton of variety in this one but all the tracks sound pretty good. I do think I’d be harsher on this one if her name wasn’t Dolly Parton but at its core it’s an above average southern country record, nothing more nothing less. Definitely on the higher end of 3 but alas
“You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there's still going to be somebody who hates peaches.” - Dita Von Teese
Don't care for country but she has a good voice. Creepy cover
Love Dolly, like this album, easy to listen to.
I know Dolly Parton is big in America. I'll miss the cultural background. Nice, but nothing more than a...
I enjoyed some of the songs. Country isn’t my favorite, but I do enjoy this era.
Dolly and her voice are a gem.
Just a very simple album to enjoy. Some easygoing fun. Didn’t know Dolly could slide like this though. The accent adds a surprising amount, especially the moments when she plays it up. Faves: Coat of Many Colors, A Better Place To Live, Here I Am, If I Lose My Mind
Album was a perfect length and felt whole, not my kind of music but I can appreciate the album for what it is
Dolly Parton sings like a sheep. A very tuneful sheep, but a sheep nonetheless. Honestly though, decent voice, major overuse of vibrato. Country music isn't my thing, but this was pretty easy to listen to. There's some fun stuff going on with the bass lines, and the tracks overall are reasonably interesting. There's not a huge amount of variety, I got excited at the start of "The Way I See You" because it had different instruments, but that didn't last more than the first few seconds. As far as Country goes, this was alright.
It’s Dolly, but just not my thing
Enjoyed more than I expected to, but it’s Dolly!
If this was anyone other than Dolly Parton I would be giving it a 2. But I’m not gonna be the asshole that gives Dolly Parton a 2.
A country music album that fully embraces its Tennessee roots. Dolly’s fame is well deserved as a singer & songwriter. She’s extremely accomplished as an artist and the songs on this album all tell a story that I imagine is very personal to Dolly. Fantastic range across the songs and a tone that is easy on the ears. Good listen.
Am I the only one who reads the reviews in foreign languages and tries to guess at what they mean, even though I don’t speak the language? Here we go! My guess: ”Give me more. If I die, let it be listening to The Queen. My guess: “ Seventeen and a half minutes of Dolly Parton and I feel empty and blank. I am once again surprised by a Country album. I enjoyed this quite a bit, Dolly tells a fine story and her voice is lovely. I don't foresee buying a gun rack for the back of the Jeep anytime soon, but this Country stuff ain't so bad y'all.
I mean, it's Dolly, what's not to like.
Ok album, nista spesl, prva pisma dobra, sve dalje je ok. Sad mogu rec da san poslusa Dolly Parton album. 6/10 Najdraza pisma: Coat of many colors
Love a good Dolly album! Highlights: "Coat of Many Colors", "Early Morning Breeze" and "The Way I See You"
Non termino de entusiasmarme con este Coat of Many Colors, pero si atopo nel cancións preciosas coma 'She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like), Here I Am ou especialmente o tema que dá nome ao disco. But they didn't understand it and I tried to make them see That one is only poor only if they choose to be Now I know we had no money but I was rich as I could be
ugt vibes
I really don't like country music, but Dolly does make it tolerable for me. She really does have a pretty voice. There's something about her that just makes me smile. Maybe it's the wholesomeness. Still not a country fan after this one, but for what it is I thought this was nice.
its dolly i can take it or leave it
I love the songwriting and instrumentation on this, but I do not like Dolly Parton’s voice. I love her as a person though. Wish she wrote more songs for my favorite vocalists.
It's fine
Good but not for me
Dolly Parton is a legend, due to the uniqueness of her voice it can make each song sound similar
I don’t enjoy the slower songs. I’m more of a Dolly’s greatest hits guy.
Short and sweet, nice!
Pleasant and comfy. Nothing too crazy. 6/10
This was a very gentle album, a nostalgic feel. Favourite track: The Way I See You
Really solid. I’ve enjoyed most of these older country albums on the list. Rating: 3.2
It was fine, no takeaways from me, but I could see where people would enjoy this.
Pleasant
Dolly rules. This album has quite a few awesome songs, but too many about God and the Bible, for me.
I know relatively about Dolly Parton, so this was useful education. Interesting that Dolly says the title song here is her personal favorite song (career-long). The melodies are fine and it has a folksy story-telling vibe.
Dolly is a singular voice and cultural icon, so I'm glad to see her on this list. Even if few of the songs resonate.
Wanted to like this more than I did.
not a REALLY big fan of country music . However, this was a good one
Gotta love dolly
Dolly is so good, this was a little middle of the road for me. Easy listening, some great tunes but not anything that’s going to stick with me for too long. Just a solid country style album.
5/10
love her voice but damn if i hate country music overall: 3 favourite track: she never met a man least favourite track: if i lose my mind
Traveling Man
A fun little country album. Dolly's voice is beautiful; making it an enjoyable listening experience.
Good collection of mostly original songs from Dolly but I never really FW the vision.. Favorite Tracks: Traveling Man, She Never Met A Man, The Way I See You
Country has never been my thing but I will admit it’s hard for this album to not put some sort of smile on your face. It’s so optimistic and sentimental. It’s not really the kind of thing I’d come back to but I do appreciate it for what it is. 3/5
what a woman
Damn, it's 1971 and Dolly Parton already has multiple albums under her belt before her Coat of Many Colors appears. For listeners of a certain vintage, she's mainly become in our minds all these things that are more 80s, 90s, and beyond than a country singer from the 60s/70s. The concerns reflected in the music are from a different time and place — and there's something about the clarity of it that makes the reflection feel more like a window. We can't measure the extent to which this is actually the case, but I feel it more with an album like this versus Tago Mago, Fragile, or Tarkus (all of which also share that release year and which I enjoy, but that bend the light of their truth in a way that feels less like a window and more like some hybrid mirror-meets-irregular-optical-device). Anyway, this is the first time I've sat and just listened to Coat of Many Colors, and the title track had me shook. The rest of the songs aren't bad either, though they had less of an immediate emotional impact. This record certainly serves as a reminder that Dolly's popularity was well deserved a long time back — and to think she hadn't even dropped Jolene on us yet.
i really enjoyed this album. her voice is incredible and i've never been in a situation to listen to more than just her hits but every song is its own hit. she's incredible in that way. i will continue to take the mystery of the mystery and she never met a man (she didn't like) with me :)
Country but not too obnoxious about it. Good tunes and messages. Mommy issues.
I liked it, but it was kind of boring. 3/5
Short and sweet. The title song is a standout.
Sweet lyrics, although I think I don't like country sorry Dolly 😔 3/5
Short and sweet. I enjoyed but not enough to go beyond a 3.
Warm, gently swaying grooves built from soft acoustic guitars, light percussion, subtle bass, and occasional fiddle or mandolin accents, with vocals delivered in a clear, tender, storytelling lilt move this country-folk album like sitting beside a wood stove while a close friend quietly spills her heart—comforting, intimate, and glowing with a humble, lived-in warmth.
Dolly Parton is, by all accounts, an amazing person, and has written some great songs. But nothing on this album grabbed me much. The wisdom on offer is a bit too simple and folksy for my taste, and none of the songs stood out much for me
The storytelling is very interesting. Beautiful voice as well
I liked it, not the best Dolly songs but still an enjoyable album.
There are two BIG reasons to like Dolly Parton: her selfless funding of the COVID vaccine research and the earnest lyricism of her music. Sometimes, on this album, Dolly ends up sounding like Alison Krauss, the type of country folk that I'm fond of, "My Blue Tears" being the perfect example. But other times, it drifts into the type of country western that I can't stand. You know the type: overly polite melodies, syrupy sentiment, and that mournful pedal steel guitar sound. The kind of thing that always seems to be on TG4 when you're skimming TV channels, skipping quickly past. But for some reason, I find myself overlooking my contempt for country western in favour of Dolly. There's something undeniably genuine about her - warm, sincere, and bright - and it comes through in her music. "Here I Am" captures that best on this album. I still don't like country western. I probably never will. But Dolly's songwriting is sincere enough that, if she happened to be on TG4, I might actually stop and watch for a bit.
I’d give this a 2.5 because it was better than rubber soul but there aren’t any bangers here I’d come back to listen to. Nice album though!
Astoundingly good vocals and incredible storytelling on this record. The well-known hit was my favorite. At just over 27 minutes, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Also included a few lyrical themes that surprised me for a 50+ year old record. I’m not a country fan at all, but I enjoyed spending a little time with this one.
It's a country album which is not normally my thing but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. She has a really good voice. It sounds like someone singing who happens to have a country accent as opposed to someone trying to force an accent to fit the vibe of country which I hate. She is also a good storyteller.
I usually say "I don't like country" but this was the type of country I can get down with. Dolly has so many known songs, and so many albums I haven't known where to begin. Nice to hear how she tells a story across the album.
I like Dolly but she’s always sounded like a cartoon mouse to me.
Talented country singer but dislike country music
I think a fair summary of this album is that it’s exactly what you’d expect from a Dolly Parton album. It’s fine but a bit too old school country and western for me and likes the punch of a 9-5 or Jolene to lift this beyond just being a reasonable listen.
I do love Dolly's voice, and I enjoyed the album, though I don't think any particular song stood out over any other. I liked it enough to listen to the album twice, yet nothing has really lodged itself in my brain. I am however now hugely curious how many times Dolly had written "Mama" or "Momma" into her song lyrics... I am still looking for the Dolly album that I can really love, because I think there's probably one out there. I think this is really a 2.5 album for me, but I'm going to give a generous rounding up as it's better than a 2. 3/5
Old school country music, lots of twanging guitars and Dolly’s unmistakable voice.
A sweet little album. I found the songs pretty simplistic with nothing I'd heard of, but I guess she couldn't write bangers all the time. Probably great if you love country but it's not really my bag. Due respect for all she's done though.
What a woman, it's a lovely album but country isn't really my thing and even though I'm sure the song writing is delightful it just doesn't really move me when the musicality is one dimensional.
I love the sound of Dolly Parton’s voice! And I love the stories she tells in her lyrics.
Dolly Parton is outstanding at what she does, but the genre itself just does not do it for me. Too many of the songs blend together, relying on the same banjo, basic drum patterns, and simple guitar work. That said, Dolly’s voice is flawless. On tracks like “Coat of Many Colors” she is genuinely brilliant. There are also moments where she pushes country into more interesting territory, like “Traveling Man,” where the electric guitar and strings actually add some bite. Unfortunately, those moments are short-lived, and it quickly falls back into familiar, predictable territory. The strength of the first two tracks keeps this album from dropping lower, but it never justifies a higher score. Solid, well-executed, but largely unexciting. 7/10.
A whimsical, joyous, rebellious, nostalgic and calming nature comes from this album. Very much enjoyed the opening track of the same title as the album, it brought up emotions of gratitude, unwavering love and guidance that mothers have towards their children. All in all a soothing listen for whenever you just want something fun and purely calming.
I liked this, it was pleasant. Didn't blow me away by any means. Dolly has an excellent voice, great person, easy songs to listen to, etc. Lots to like. But there's nothing special about it for me. Decent.
I like the lyrics of Coat of Many Colors
Travelling man and A Better Place to Live are my favourite tracks.
I like country music, but generally not popular country. But Dolly is a treasure.
Um, well this sounds just like the music my grandad played on a Sunday morning in the 1970s. As he grew up in one of the poorer parts of London before joining the navy and fighting in the war, I think he related to the stories told in country music about hardship and loss. And they are good stories, well related by the talented Dolly. I don't especially connect with these songs myself, but I do appreciate the skill and craft that went into making them. My grandad didn't necessarily have the coolest taste in music, but his C&W collection was infinitely preferable to my uncle's Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull albums, which scarred me for life 😬 I miss my grandparents and their tasty Sunday dinners...
Dolly Parton.
Not the style of country I'm into. 1 point for Dolly being iconic. 1 point for songwriting. 1 for it being a 27 min album. 3/5.
Country isn’t really for me. But Dolly is obviously iconic. Didn’t mind it!
Although I do not like country or think this album has influenced me to listen to it more, it was well done. It reminded me to appreciate the things that I have in life and stop envying others.
Very pleasant. I might rate higher upon further listens. Made me think of Robert Altman's "Nashville"
Better than I thought. She can sing. It is probably a two but that rack…
Not really my thing :/
Ei tajunnanräjäyttävä, mut aivan hyvä 3-4/5
At 27 minutes, this album is straightforward and concise. Dolly Parton’s songwriting is very focused while also being pretty sappy at times. Songs like the title track are full of heart and other tracks can be a little too on the nose. This isn’t a bad album at all, but it left me wanting a little bit more.
A pretty generic Dolly Parton album, nothing special but still very good
This was absolutely lit! Not sure I’ve ever listened through a full dolly album and it was awesome. She can sing and she can TELL A STORY! More 3.5 to me but like a real solid 3.5. Almost a 4, but it’s almost too short and the genre isn’t my fav still.
Love when she says oughtn’t
Dolly Parton has such a great, unique voice, but I'm not a big fan of country. I truly enjoyed listening to this album but I doubt I'll return.
Shockingly good run of tunes here. I completely forgot that old country was really just folk extended. There are some really lovely arrangements and I can see why people love Dolly. 6/10
later
Easy-listening country rhythms with acoustic guitars; good lyrical storytelling
Nostalgic
I've never listened to Dolly before and was surprised about how much I enjoyed this! I am not a country music fan in the slightest but this album was enjoyable.
Never heard anything by Dolly Parton and I don't generally like country music. This was really enjoyable. Probably not something I'll listen to again but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed when the album ended.
I enjoyed this album fine. This is not music I typically gravitate towards or listen to regularly but I found this to be pleasant and enjoyable to listen to. Nothing groundbreaking but still very Dolly! I probably wouldn’t listen to this again but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
I get that she’s a good songwriter, I just don’t like it and I can’t listen to that voice for more than a few minutes at a time
Short & sweet 7/10
Pretty good 70’s country. Dolly was in her prime here. Admittedly some of this does blend together for me but it’s still a fine (quick) listen. 6/10 Favorite tracks- “Traveling Man” “Here I Am”
I have never heard a bad Dolly Parton song, but some tracks, like “Early Morning Breeze” are truly transcendent, while others seem like they require a passion for country music (that I lack) to truly appreciate and sit with. It’s such a short album so there’s not much room for error, which makes it hard to give a rating. I’d say this one is on the better side of 3 for me.
Tolerable country
