Reviews (page 6 of 12)
I like this a lot. Very varied and the instrumentation is interesting. Here I Am - Carole King vibes Early Morning Breeze - if you stripped it down would sound like something from the Hylics soundtrack Earlier tracks remind me of the Japanese Folk/Country duo(?) Humbert Humbert who I love. SOme bits remind me of Candypants too (the Album with the singer from The Stool Pigeons))
Thoroughly enjoyed this, was a nice short ride. But every song had heart to it.
Dolly Parton is an icon and this album is just a brick in that impenetrable icon wall. When I pulled her up on Apple Music this was the SEVENTH album in her "Essential Albums" section. The songs here are gorgeous and sincere; Dolly invites you in, pours you a cup of tea, and says "I know it's getting dark but you can stay as long as you like." So I played this thing through three times.
Excellent country album
Old school country but of the upbeat variety. Dolly's voice is incredibly sweet and pure and that gives this record a very welcoming, comfortable feel --more of the "sunshine, picnic, enjoying the outdoors" country than the "dive bar, hard drinking, heartbreak" kind. I enjoyed this album, though I'm not a huge country fan, and could see a few of the songs making it on a playlist.
Loved this. 4.5/5
Genuinely good album. Lyrics seemed heartfelt and full of emotion, the music was in the same wave length. Brilliant harmonies and proper classic 70s country pop
Classic Dolly Parton. A well rounded record and contextually important historical milestone of country and folk. Here I am is by and far a stand out for me. Beautiful record for driving through the countryside, making dinner, or dreaming about a long forgotten pastoral way of life. 4/5.
Great album that has some of her best songs. It's a very long album that at times gets dragged down by some slow songs that aren't all hits but it's still a great album.
Great album. Tails a bit off towards the end, but strong beginning. Listened twice accidentally, would listen again:)
Excellent
Such a fun album. Full of emotion and amazing vocals.
Brilliant album. As a Belgian (where country music is non-existent) I always had this weird attraction to Dolly Parton's music.
Never heard this but I love Dolly Parton. Heartbreaking. Cracking.
Good
Dolly for president!!!!
Nice album! Maybe all the songs are too short, but very beautiful!
Listening to this I realized that for as many of her songs as I love, I've never actually listened to a Dolly album. This one is mostly great - Waggoner's songs are the only ones that really drag it down. Dolly's material shines.
Dolly Parton doesn't know how to stop vibrato. That's country music ig, don't listen to all that much. But I don't really think you can hate such an inoffensive album as this.Never Met a man she didn't like= she a HOE!!!! All around nice music, beautiful vocals (as expected)
I have a great appreciation for Dolly Parton. The surprise song for me was “If I lose my Mind”. My favorite was “Here I Am.
(Approx. 27 mins) A stand out lyrically. Speaks with a raw honesty about life: mothers, men, poverty, and the meaning of it all (the mystery). Not sure we could have had, "Golden Hour" if this album didn't exist. I never noticed how absent mothers/motherhood is in country music. (7/10)
Classic Dolly - only the title track was familiar. Some stories - like my mother ran off with my boyfriend - seem racy for 1971. Enjoyed it but won't seek out for another listen.
Never listened much to Dolly, but good album!
Can tell Dolly has influenced a lot of country and even I heard songs that would have influenced white stripes etc. Enjoyed this one
Generally speaking, this is not my thing, but for Dolly I guess I make an exception
Nice discovery, enjoyed listening to this
good voice
Lovely stuff
I was actually quite excited to see Dolly Parton. Not super familiar with her or Country in general it was cool to finally explore that. Dolly is an incredible singer/songwriter and I definitely see the appeal here. Favorite songs: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze
After getting through the opening track, the album opens up to be amazing. Several stand out tracks, would listen again if the mood catches.
Great songs, performances, and production. I can't fault this one even though it isn't something I would normally listen to. There are some solid Nashville country tunes between gospel numbers and even some almost-rock-n-roll hippie bops.
Dolly rules
An extremely charming album that immediately won me over with the title track, and continued to impress from there. The songs here are touching and empowering, while also heartbreaking and sometimes get my head bopping. I'd place Dolly in with some of the best singer-songwriters of the 70s Americana/country era, and this album is a great example of her prowess. Fav Tracks: She Never Met A Man, Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze, My Blue Tears
This record showcases Dolly's storytelling prowess and impassioned delivery really nicely. While some of the gender politics haven't aged so well (it's never the man's fault, always the "other woman's"), her distinct perspective shines through and there's some moving tracks. My hot take is that Dolly is a better songwriter and performer than singer. The persistent vibrato that is her signature is just not my cup of tea. That said, there's a lot to enjoy here: classic country arrangements, compelling songs, tight runtime. Rating: 3.5/5 Favourite songs: Here I Am, My Blue Tears, Coat of Many Colors
Alte Musik, aber an sich wirklich gut
Kratko i slatko bas kao dobra stara Dolly.
Very cool !
I LOVED IT fair play to her as well!
Howdy
Nice, classic country.
Notable Songs: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze
Now That’s What I Call WT vol. 1 Powerful and soulful, it’s Dolly at her best. Still not sure what to make of Dolly’s mama 🤔
Made me cry, nothing like her voice in heaven or on earth
Very good. Love the mix of styles. Wonderful harmonies
Never listened to Dolly, but gotta say that I understand the hype. Beautiful music, through and through. Cant give it 5 stars because 4 seemed more appropriate to me.
only thing holding it back is the production
Treasure
This is a bit closer to a 3.5 for me but I'll round up knowing this isn't my kind of music. I liked the tracks that told stories like the title, Travelin Man, and If I Lose My Mind. The music itself all kind of blended together for me but it was a nice breezy listen.
Good, old-fashioned Grand Ole Opry Americana. She sings so beautifully. This kind of music is what I wish more country music was like: story telling about something other than beer.
No single song stood out as amazing, but the whole album was enjoyable.
I'm not a fan of the loss of sisterhood in some of the lyrics. Still amazing.
Really fun, didn't expect to like it but the album really tells a story
I mean, it's dolly parton. It was fun, probably won't listen to any of the songs again though
First time I listen to country music that I find enjoyable
Honestly, really good! Her voice is great. The production is nice. Well written songs. At least a 3.5!
That coat has 2 colors
Producers forcing this new, incredible voice into short singles for radio play on country stations... It is great to hear where she broke through to compare against what she became as she evolved.
Very nice. How could you not like Dolly Parton?
Listened to this while playing Aeon's End with my partner against Crooked Mask. We lost 2 games but won the 3rd. I really enjoyed this album. Dolly Parton is such a treasure. As a child, the only thing I knew about her was that my dad called the giant dome power plants on the way to San Diego "the Dolly Parton tribute." As an adult, I have absolutely come to love her style and lyricism. My partner felt everything sounded the same, which I get a little bit...but at under 30 minutes, it certainly doesn't overstay its welcome.
Her voice is absolutely stunning, and the message of the album is honestly one of my favorites so far in this list. There just may be a country fan in me after all. Favorite track: Coat of Many Colors
I really like this era of country. The bassist was doing a good job which is not something I usually equate with country music. Short and sweet and I like Dollys voice and cadence.
Last song was very cheesy but otherwise this was a total slay. Love u Dolly
Yay Dolly!
c’est sympa en vrai ça ambiance pas mal
I have some questions about Mamma.
all the country you'll ever need, in one handy album
This woman really loves her mum
I really enjoyed this. Some great story-telling and humor. A little bit of Peace and Love with "A better Place to Live," some sweet gospel, some humor ("Travelin Man"). But it has my new favorite song, the stunningly beautiful "Early Morning Breeze." Short and sweet. Dolly Parton has such an iconic voice and her songs are more interesting melodically and lyrically than the Porter Wagoner ones. Still great overall. Coat of Many Colors has a comfortable, folksy tone, simple instrumentation that highlights the songs and Dolly's lovely voice.
Surprisingly good, country's not really my thing but who doesn't like Dolly?
7/10 - Few great tracks - lots of smooth listening Good classic country rock - Decent songs throughout
Dolly Parton is great!
Rating: 9/10 Amazing country album. Loved the singing, instrumentation, and lyrics. The production and mix is fantastic and songwriting is strong, the album is short and sweet. The bass is absolutely amazing on this album and the storytelling is great. Favorite songs: Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, My Blue Tears, Here I Am, A Better Place to Live. Least Favorite Song: The Mystery of the Mystery, still good though.
Dolly is such a fantastic storyteller. Everything coming from a purely sincere and authentically positive place. Weaving through what I can only assume are real life examples she’s in full voice and sounds simply wonderful throughout this. An EXCELLENT country record. One even the staunchest anti-country folks can enjoy.
i love classic country sm
this surprised me just how enjoyable it was.
Soulful, rebellious, and a veritable work of art. The emotional impact of Dolly's vocal range and skill is on full display with this album. Only a few tracks feel uninspired, with all other tracks possessing a rich creativity unique to Dolly's style and songwriting.
i’ll be honest, i don’t wanna listen to this but here we go. God, am i wrong again? i think possibly, because this first song is beautiful and i love it. Dolly parton is a sweetheart with such good lyrics and sweet melodies and I apologise for ever doubting you Dolly! you have a lovely voice and such a story to tell, i loved it!!
I did not expect to wish this album was longer. I think I knew that DP was a prolific and talented songwriter, but to see it laid out in this collection of simple and effective songs is quite something. It's still a bit too trad country for my tastes, so it's going to struggle to get into the high fours, but it's probably the most pleasant surprise of The Project so far.
I don’t really like grunge - but Kurt Cobain was a genius. I’m not really a big fan of reggae - but Bob Marley wrote amazing songs. Country is one of my least favourite genres - but you’ve got to respect (if not love) Dolly.
Title song was stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Traveling Man is pretty good too. This album was easy to listen to and really shows off Dolly Parton's talents.
I know a couple of Dolly Parton songs, but this was my first experience with one of her whole albums. This album was really good; the songs ranged from gut-wrenchingly sad to heartfelt to hilarious and absurd. I really loved Dolly Parton's singing, especially on the second half of the album. The instrumentation was simple, but it created a nice backdrop for Dolly's storytelling, which was the standout feature of this album. I did really enjoy the bass line and drumming on "Early Morning Breeze," which was one of the best songs on the album. However, the crowning achievement of this album was the title track. It's beautiful, and has a heartbreaking innocence that's incomparable to any other song that I've heard before. What a wonderful illustration of Dolly's mom's love for her children. The song called to mind an intersection I pass on my way home from work, where I usually see a lady with a small child, selling flowers. This scene always breaks my heart, and I wonder what I would do for my daughter if I ever found myself in a similar situation. I hope and pray that I would be as lovingly tough as Dolly's mom was, and that I would do everything I can to provide for my daughter, while shielding her from the harshness of our situation. Hopefully though, Dolly's vision on the final track can come closer to fruition, and we can all make A Better Place To Live.
Great fun listen! Love dolly
Enjoyable album from Dolly. Having only heard Jolene and Working 9 to 5, this album is exactly what I was expecting
I thought it would be more “country” but it really wasn’t that bad. Dolly is great
There are some nice songs on here but it isnt complete. The voice shines
Amazing
Beautiful, Dolly is a treasure
Ok, so admittedly I am not a huge country fan but I've listened enough to know good from bad. This is good. More importantly I can clearly see how this influenced many female artists to come, even those not in the country genre. I don't know that I'd seek this album out again but I might. It's worth a 4 because of the respect I have for Dolly's influence on the future of music.
It's dolly parton, it's a banger
dolly for prez
Great lyrics and voice.
I’ve always said I didn’t like country. And I thought I really didn’t. But this album was surprisingly good. Felt very nostalgic, too. Not too many songs that really amazed me, but I felt good the whole way through. I can see myself checking out some more Dolly Parton in the future. 7/10 Top 3: 1. Traveling Man 2. Coat of Many Colors 3. My Blue Tears
Great album, some really strong songs. Love how the bass and her pitch offset each other. I would've guessed it was earlier in her catalogue but I don't know why.
It sometimes feels a little preachy and samey, but on the whole this was great. Easy listening, impassioned storytelling and such unique twang/drawl. Not an album I see myself coming back to often, but I really appreciated the listen. 3.5/5 Fav track: way i see you
Hard not to be won over by Dolly's signature drawl. Real emotion and tenderness in the vocal delivery too. High score, this is not necessarily my bag but I think if it is, it's a cornerstone record. Three and a half. Fave track: Coat of Many Colors
dolly parton deserves all the praise she gets. THIS is country music.
Great storytelling from a talented artist.
A consummate songwriter - every song is a heartfelt story. Dolly is a tower of talent and even if the music doesn’t always reel me in, I have miles of admiration for her.
I don't have much of a review other than to say Dolly is an American icon for good reason. Strong album from a seminal American songwriter and artist. I liked the diversity of styles — there's a country flavor throughout, for sure, but she mixed it up, and even let the bassist have a spot in the sun for a moment there on the rocker.
Yeah, this is great. It's not a 5 for me, only because of my own personal taste in music, specifically country music. But that's on me, not on Dolly, who is charming, witty, warm, caring, and sweet. Great performances by everyone involved. Great songwriting. Just a pro job all around.
A collection of sweet, gentle country songs. Really wish the genre was more like this currently.
Dolly has a lovely voice, and clever, occasionally funny lyrics. She's a great storyteller. I don't really care for country music, except when it's done well, like this.
Écouter journée en boucle m'avait donner une meilleure idée de Dolly parton Mais c'est très bien quand meme
Beautiful storytelling. I’ve never listened to an entire dolly. Very glad I have now
8/10
dolly parton is always wonderful, i've only listened to the very popular "jolene" and the collaboration album "trio" before this but this is very good. the title track, "my blue tears", and "early morning breeze" are my favorites.
This surprisingly hit me harder than I thought it would. The real strength of this album is not so much the music, but the emotion in her voice and the conviction in the lyrics. I also just enjoy the way some of these old recordings sounded.
Starting off year two with a great album by Dolly Parton. Good album with lots of catchy riffs, but just not my style.
Love Dolly :) Coat of Many Colors is a great story.
While I am obviously familiar with Dolly, I'd never listened to one of her albums. The title track is definitely the strongest song on the album but I like all of it. I really like Dolly's voice here; it's clear and strong.
Dolly is truly something special, isn't she?
Great album! Writing is from the heart and music is simply sweet!
Lots of well-made tracks aside from the title track.
Dollyyyyyyy
At first I was like "Oh God DAMN it, another country album?? Already? This is like the fourth one this month!" But then I thought for a moment, "well, it's Dolly, so hey, it has to be at least passable." And hell, it doesn't have an obnoxious run time either. That's already two points in this one's favor. And man, was my hunch correct or what? Congratulations, Dolly Parton. You singlehandedly saved country music.
I had never dug too deep into Dolly’s catalog, but I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of music and the double-edged theme throughout Coat of Many Colors. Partially an ode to her mother and partially a cry out to her former lovers, the 27-minute record provided a nice backdrop during my Uber ride back from Hobby. From “If I Lose My Mind” to “Traveling Man,” Dolly demonstrates a complicated but close relationship with her mother. She zooms out to the big picture of life (and death) through “The Mystery Of The Mystery” and “A Better Place To Live,” and gives the audience a tip we could all put to use more often: There’s a bit of magic in a simple little smile. But without a doubt, the heart and soul of this album shines through in the title track. It reminds me of the women in my family and the values they hope to pass down, even if we’ve graduated beyond rags. “Man in Black” has always been my go-to classic country tune with a deeper message, but after listening to “Coat of Many Colors,” Johnny Cash may just have company. Coat of Many Colors reflects an October drive down I-24 more so than it does a night on Broadway, and that’s alright by me. The beers will set you back a pretty penny, but the crisp autumn air on the way there won’t cost you a dime. As they say, the best things in life are free.
I thought it was a nice little record. The title track had me tearing up a bit thinking about my grandma, not gonna lie. My only criticisms are that the album feels a bit too short and the songs The Mystery of the Mystery and She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like) feel a bit dated.
Classic after classic on this one. This era of Dolly is where she was at her best, at least, lyrically and for a woman in the early seventies, writing your own songs at all is impressive, let alone that they’re country gold. This album is a cozy collection of songs that can comfort you even if she’s singing about heavier topics because Dolly is just so simply, incredibly authentic. She’s an incredible singer but rarely feels the need to show that off. Some of the tracks don’t have enough going on to really keep the album moving. The blend together a little after a while (could be because more than half of them were recorded the same day), but Dolly always finds a way to pull you back in. Also, not sure if this is something I don’t like or just something I noticed, but putting “Traveling Man”, a song where Dolly criticizes her mother, directly after the title track, which praises her mother, does make for a harsh juxtaposition of her maternal relationship. All in all, love this album, love Dolly. Fun and enjoyable. 4/5
There is such a purity and clarity that punches from Dolly Parton's songs. This record is so tight and so succinct. Just an excellent record rounded out with excellent songs.
the joy i felt when i saw today's randomized album! queen dolly! older country typically is a calming and relaxing listen, and parton holds true to that in coat of many colors. it's quite the easy listen. her voice is so endearing and definitely adds to the easy rhythm. "early morning breeze" is a great example of this! with most of the album written by parton, her music comes across as incredibly genuine. the only exceptions are the one song from each side that were written by her long-time collaborator, porter wagoner. with the opening track as the title track, parton nails her purpose within three minutes.
Dolly Parton is a country music legend deserving of her spot on this project! She only has two albums on this project, the other with other country legends -- the fact that her work spans decades and has been so influential in the country-pop crossover spaces makes that seem almost criminal. But if you're only going to include one album, this is definitely a top contender, though it would not have been my first choice (probably my second or third, though)! In any case, Dolly's voice is so incredibly sweet on this album (as always!) and her songwriting is strong; she weaves strong and relatable stories here, some of them obviously inspired by her own life. This is overall a light and easy listening album, not to mention quick and to the point, coming in at just over 30 minutes! Dolly is ALWAYS like an early morning breeze!
Je kan vinden van Dolly wat je wil, maar liedjes schrijven kan ze wil. Een storyteller in hart en nieren. Het ligt goed in het gehoor. Eigenlijk beter dan de mannelijke country artiesten
I'm not a fan of country, but Dolly Parton makes it rather fun and enjoyable. She manages to inject some life into otherwise repetitive songs and themes. Her voice also fits the genre so well.
Good album all around. If modern country was anything like this it would have a much larger fan base.
Loved it, love DP :)
Personal Enjoyability (out of 40): 23 Consistency of Quality (out of 25): 21 Keeps Interest (out of 25): 17 Album Flow (out of 10): 9 Overall 70/100 ★★★★ Quick Review: Never listened to a Dolly Parton album before but this was really lyrically and musically sweet. Some of the songs are a bit samey but as a record of 10 songs, all of which are less than 4 minutes and most less than 3, it never becomes boring to listen to.
-SO EXCITED for dolly parton -LOVE HER!!!! SO MUCH!!!!! -i’m already getting emotional at this first song -gosh her voice is STUNNING -traveling man is a cute song -this is the only country i have (so far!!!!) really genuinely liked -early morning breeze is easily my favorite on the album -it feels like a lullaby you sing to a kid in the summer -overall i love dolly parton and this album was fun to listen to
Great country album by the queen of country herself. "Coat of Many Colors" is a fantastic song with beautiful lyrics and the other songs are good too.
Dolly Parton is great and this is a really solid album. A lot of the tracks have cool instrumentation and naively not what I'd associate with Dolly Parton. This is a quick, upbeat album that's a fun listen. Standout Tracks: Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, If I Lose My Mind, Early Morning Breeze, Here I Am, A Better Place to Live
4/5. Quite a good album with not a bad song. Dolly Parton has something to say and she sings it with conviction. It's beautiful, short and sweet. It ends before you know it and just want to play it all over again. Best song: The Way I See You, She Never Met a Man
Well would you look at that, I’m a Dollyhead. Never really listened to her tunes but that was just fabulous
Comforting and uplifting 3.7/5
Sad, sappy songs. Not as catchy as her later stuff, but really pleasant throughout
Coat of Many Colors is a great song. A couple other good songs on here too.
Country guay. 3. Venga, 4, que es Dolly.
Voice of an angel with loving messages for all.
Kort, lent och bra sjunget.
Great songs and a stunning voice shorn of the schmaltzy augmentation often lavished on country songs. 4/5
Lovely country music. Dolly is really one of the greatest. More uplifting in tone than many other country artists and definitely better than all modern country I've listened to (radio pop-country).
One of my favorite songs ever is the title track so I had high expectations. I think it mostly met them. I love the more traditional-sounding country songs of the time such as If I Lose My Mind and The Mystery of the Mystery. There are a couple of weaker songs at the end but overall a very good mostly traditional country album.
Fantastic Dolly record. There are so many damn Dolly Parton records it is hard to know which ones deserve a listen.
first listen how can you not love dolly parton
Surprisingly enjoyed this
This was a cool album. Nice and short. but every song had some life to it. not too repetitive. 4
Country music back in the day just hits different. It's still free, artistic, and a memory of simpler times. Getting Flagels with Grampa out in NJ and his love of outlaw country. It's hard to think of Dolly anything other than the mega figure she has been my entire life. Short and sweet lil album here.
I liked this more than I thought I would. 70s country lyrics caught me off guard.
Beautiful album, esp Coat of Many Colors
Great! Really enjoyed this album. Dolly has such a sweet voice, it's a real pleasure to listen to
Who doesn’t love Dolly Parton?
i get the obsession with dolly, culturally, because she is a pure, raw talent. i also love many older country, more folk-adjacent catalogues. what a gem
Dolly’s voice is a treat. While some of her biggest hits are absent here, you’ve got some great, authentic country songs and a banger: “Here I AM”
This was fantastic. True queen of country
I love Dolly, but some of her music is too sad for me.
Can't say i'm a big fan of country and religious sentiment tends to turn me off completely but can't knock Dolly Parton here.
Dolly Parton is a Saint. She just seems like the est of good eggs. I enjoyed this album and when I learn all the lyrics I can see my belting this around the house.
Listened Before? No I’m not sure I’ve ever listened to any Dolly except 9 to 5 and Jolene, but this was unexpectedly wonderful. Added to/in Library? Yes (6/10 tracks)
Day 90 I am glad I got this album! Dolly Parton is one of those artists I find interesting and likeable in the way only iconic artists (which she clearly is) are but I have never taken the time to properly dig further into them. And I am glad that I've listened to this album and I have read about it because it got me thinking. A lot. Although some (probably preconceived) ideas were already there. So, my dear reader, strap yourselves in because we're in for a ride! I am reading (from Apple Music) that with this album she wanted to step away from the "sad-ass songs" she was so far known for and try to bring forward the intrinsic beauty in every day human struggle. The album kicks in with the title track, a song about poverty sung with a certain sense of joy and pride. A beautiful sentiment if you think about it, but I'd like to point out that at this point of her career, Dolly was already a staple of her own scene. I don't mean to say that she could have been intentionally hypocritical but The Dolly Parton we know and remember today is beautiful, enthusiastic, hugely successful, and forever young. She is sweet, so sweet when she sings and smiles (because you can hear her smiling when she sings!) that after spending a few hours with this album I had to sign in for a glucose levels check in. Her exuberant looks, coupled with a sort of candid attitude and the fact that she never made her marriage life public, makes of her a portrait of the 50s ideal woman of sorts: Ma'am has a sexuality that is somehow apparent to everyone (but not too much) and is only available in the context her own bedroom. With her husband. Talk about American dream! Or should I say white American conservative male dream? Clean-faced American dream. Blue-ish white teeth-bright-smile American dream. Be-happy-no-matter-what American dream. Always-perform-the-best-out-of-you American dream. Should I go on? Still Dolly Parton didn't need to take off her top or simulate an orgasm on stage, nor did she need to publicly claim she was a virgin and then reveal that she lost said virginity. She never had an affair with a fifteen year old dancer of her own troupe. She never had to cover herself in steaks either. Dolly Parton only sold the songs that she wrote and sang herself and left the rest for the crowds to fantasize about. Or not! And I am not being moralistic about it, I mean, if anything I don't see why any form of sex appeal should be a requirement when it comes to any female artist, and besides that I like my music to be down and dirty; but whereas more modern pop stars put their sexuality up-front in a way that (to me personally) seems forced, Dolly Parton came out as "too clean to be true". No swagger, in other words. Or too subtle a swagger? No rebellion, no nothing. The fact that she would go on to become an icon for feminists, LGBTQ+, and socially oppressed people in general, only based on a sense of optimism, seems counterintuitive to me. As it is counterintuitive the fact that I find her profoundly likeable, a feat that Taylor Swift will never accomplish. In a way I understand how, although far removed from reality (or at least, my reality), she might be a relatable character but I couldn't explain myself how, and that might have to do with something that is real but doesn't really belong to the conscious realm. And... Ah, yes! This album is really fine stuff.
Genuine songs, well played and beautifully performed. Dolly is on top of her game in each performance and the arrangements are top notch.
Best one so far
Dolly is THE MOMENT.
Dolly Parton's music is a thing of beauty that I don't listen to enough
This hits. Title track was great.
An absolute delight.
I like Dolly Parton, she can tell a story through music and she's a fantastic singer, her genre of music might not be my taste but its still very good
Coming across an excellent country album is always a joy.
she's the goat
7/10 - Relaxing and good to listen to in the background
Great album. Not really my thing though
i enjoyed this way more than i thought i would, but im also dont particularly feel like listening to it more ..
i really love dolly, her sound is amazing. you can’t not like it
Satisfying. 4 stars
Fantastic love dolly, short but sweet album
Not bad for country music
Surprisingly good listen
Pretty surprising. It's strong and sweet at the same time. Plenty of country twang, but it is set on top of a lot of above average songs. They aren't just pleasant, but are engaging both lyrically and melodically. This consistency pushes it to a 4.
Not my cuppa tea but surprisingly good.
Good album, loved the backing music. Dolly's vocals are awesome, but does have it's limit.
Track 1: Coat of Many Colors Dolly has such a beautiful voice. I never realized how truly amazing her vocals sound. This song is so sweet. It illustrates growing up poor and showing immense love for a coat her mom made her. Basically says riches don’t mean anything Track 2: Traveling Man This one’s about Dolly sneaking out with a man and not telling her mother. Little did Dolly know, her mom was also seeing the same guy. 💀It’s a bit humorous Track 3: My Blue Tears A sad little song about breaking up with a guy. Tending to your own sadness and pity while everyone else is happy. Track 4: If I Lose My Mind In this song, Dolly tells her mother that the man she loved is not a good person. It could represent your family sticking by your side when other people treat you wrong. Track 5: The Mystery Of The Mystery This song is about wondering about life’s questions and believing no one but God would know those answers. Track 6: She Never Met A Man (She Didn’t Like) This is a message to a man who supposedly loves a woman who loves all the other men, implicating that she isn’t loyal to her partner or would be easily swayed. Dolly loves this man. It is like a warning. Track 7: Early Morning Breeze This is a pretty song about appreciating the earth. Track 8: The Way I See You I adore the instrumentation on this song. Similar to the last song Track 9: Here I Am This song reaches out with a desperation for someone to love and shows how she would be in a relationship. Really beautiful song. Track 10: A Better Place To Live I like the lyrics, but over time the songs start to sound really similar
4.5
"My Blue Tears" "Here I Am"
A sweeter soul has never been in the music industry, Dolly comes out with a collection of knee tappers and a few heart felt tunes and one in "Here I am" that borders on soul music. Her voice in unmistakeable and inviting. Would listen to again. favourite tracks My Blue Tears, Early Morning Breeze, Here I Am.
Listened Before? N Wow, what a great album! It has a very modern feel to it in a way, and it's very cohesive in it's themes. Dolly's voice is instantly recognizable and timeless. This was her in her prime, and it shows. Amazing beauty with amazing voice. A very, very good listen. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Early Morning Breeze, Coat of Many Colors
Great album. Obviously title track is great but a lot of the tracks are just nice, clean, simple country songs. Early Morning Breeze was a standout I had never heard before
The first song is great, it's the essence of the country. The rest of the album is also great but not as the first song. The voice of Dolly Parton is great.
Dolly Parton really knew how to put out albums back in the 60s and 70s. This is one of her better ones but not her best. Coat of many colors is a great song that has an easy yet strong story. Dolly was part of country music that showed it was okay to struggle and have hard times and not everything is about a party. She is one of the best female country artists and this album shows off her great voice and excellent song writing. 7.6/10
Great voice, good simple music
Not a fan of country, but I liked this more than expected, especially 'coat of many colours'.
She’s some girl 😎
A lovely country romp
Delightful album. Absolutely lovely in all respects. Fine words, fine tunes and a great sound. First time I’d listened to an album of Dolly and it was a pleasure.
It's Dolly, with all the warmth and loveliness that that suggests. A kind hearted hug of an album that you'd have to be a grumpy rotter to dislike. The opener and closer are the two classics on here, but all is enjoyable, if occasionally a bit too Country 101 to be truly mind blowing.
Dolly is an icon and this album was very enjoyable.
Dolly is such a lovely person. I cannot separate the person who Dolly is from her music. She is a treasure and all musicians should look to her as how to deal with their influence, fortune, and fame. Although I am not a country and western fan, this is pretty great. It is light and happy, while the words are often neither. I especially like the songs: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze, & Here I Am
Dolly is a legend. Not my all-time favorite, but she has my respect.
*Generally feel good and fun, love a bit of Dolly! I liked the traveling man one because it had a story, love a story in a song. *"one is only poor only if they choose to be' lol. I know what that lines trying to say but still, lol. *Some very dark themes put very frankly (like in 'if I loose my mind') but I think that was kind of heartfelt and beautiful. *I was bitterly disappointed there was not a single song from Joseph the musical, but I tried not to let that influence my enjoyment or judgement of the album
As someone who isn't massively into country Dolly Parton is just something else. I love how she tells honest stories but with humour, but via catchy songs too. She is an exceptional talent
Obviously I've heard of Dolly Parton, but not sure I had actually heard any of her songs... even though she once recorded an album in my small home village of Great Ponton in Lincolnshire. Anyhow, I thought I would find this an intolerable mix of sickly sweet and country, but it is actually not sickly sweet, and is very good. Excellent songwriting and voice.
Dolly has my whole heart. Coat of many colors (song) is undeniably iconic. The rest of the album is a true testament to her story telling and musical abilities. This album was fantastic, even so not her best hence the 4 as opposed to 5.
Usually when I talk about having to separate the artist from their personal activities, it's because of awful crimes that they've committed against humanity. With Dolly, it's the opposite. I have to separate all the the good that she's done for humanity from the music presented here. Luckily, this is a good album. I'm not a big country fan, but a lot of the older stuff has qualities that makes it very approachable. Parton has a great voice, she's an incredible songwriter, and the music that accompanies her covers a lot of dynamic range. It's also crazy that this is her 8th solo album. In a better world, we would spend a lot more time listening to Dolly Parton and a lot less time listening to Henry Kissinger. Also, in that better world Kissinger would be long dead and we would all take turns peeing on his cursed bones. Long live Dolly Parton! 4/5
Amazing woman.
Great album from a great era in country music. Dolly has such an unmistakable voice, with some crazy vibrato on some of these songs, and her song and lyric writing are great too.
Pretty good album. I've always had an issue w/ the standard basslines in country music like this, up/down/up/down, stairstep. It just gets super repetitive. However, there are some really cool basslines in some of these songs, and I like what all the other instruments do as well. 3.75/5
I get why Dolly is so revered for her songwriting now. She has a knack for melody and lyrical beauty, as is evident throughout. I do think that it peaks on the first side and starts to drag near the end, even for a sub-30 minute album, but I enjoy the lot of it. B
first album i've listened to twice in a row. great both times. Dolly's voice is clear as a bell and the instrumentation is tight as hell. Admittedly, I've slept on Ms. Parton a little, but I don't think I will any more. I should really head back to Dollywood at some point.
Good stuff, Dolly.
Solid country album. 4/5
Coming off the back of another country album (which I didn't mind), I wasn't too enthusiastic to get into this. But, boy, am I glad I did. Some great storytelling, low key production, really good. I especially liked the title track.
7/10. Good stuff, enjoyed the dialect-y rhymes in Traveling Man
Fantastic, much better than expected
She really can sing.
One big takeaway from this project so far has been just how much amazing country records were made both in and outside Tennessee. I can’t claim to have been particularly enlightened on the genre, and most of my impressions centred around an extremely hokey caricature of hillbilly folk rock. Once again, I’m pleasantly surprised. This album is just so good. Dolly Parton’s songwriting is so stellar, but that goes without saying. What really hits home on this record is the production. There are some pop flourishes on this record which are so forward thinking, I’d have thought them impossible on a country record. But nevertheless they just serve to really hit home the songwriting quality on display. My personal favourite was the emotionally powerful “The Way I See You”, but the truth is there’s such a diverse spectrum of moods on this album you can’t really go wrong. Add in the relatively short run time and you have a winner in my book. Great stuff!
This is a terrific album. The title track is awesome. My dad played it for me as a kid and to this day it still makes me tear up a bit. The rest of the songs are pretty good, but not quite as good as that title track. There's still a lot to like here. A great album from a legend of the genre.
Liked this a lot more than I expected to.
Now THIS is country. Lush songwriting, genuine emotion, classic production. And such a pure voice. Even at her most saccharine, Dolly is earnest and wins me over every time.
I haven't heard this since I was a kid hanging out with Aunt Debbie and cousin Angela. Really enjoyed it. Dolly is an ICON.
Naslovna je genijalna
Who doesn’t love Dolly? I heard some songs I never had before. Some of the lyricals are scandalous.
Un 3 en temps normal mais un 4 aujourd'hui
dolly mon exception qui confirme la règle♥ (à bas la country)
Really good album. Standouts: Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man, Here I Am. 4/5
I kind of hate the title track. It's kitschy and belittling even as it tries to achieve the opposite. Anyway, the rest of the album is pretty great. Best track: Here I Am
Kind of surprised this one is on here, but no Jolene. Good album, but few standouts outside of the title track.
There is a criminally small amount of country music on this list. And I'm not a big country music fan. The list writer(s) being from the UK is very evident when you look at the amount of mediocre 90s pop dance. Anyways… Before she was a national treasure. Before she was an actress. Before she was the butt of jokes about her looks, Dolly Parton was pure country. Country music is story telling. It makes you happy, sad, optimistic and angry. Dolly's songwriting earned her slot on this list and her voice secured her spot on the list of great singers. 4/5.
Even those who vow they hate country cannot hate Dolly, myself included. Her voice is mesmerizing, seemingly without effort, and her storytelling is perfection. My only critique is that the world she portrays, with all of it's dysfunctional relationships and social injustices, seems somehow quaint. While she paints such a clear picture of inequality, no one would ever call it protest music.
Been in love with Dolly my entire life man.
Quite a short record but it's jam packed with the emotional and earnest storytelling we expect from Dolly. She is vulnerable yet strong and proud, and always uniquely herself which is why she is so loved and adored. I like her 80's music more, but this record is the crown jewel of her career in terms of songwriting. Country isn't my thing, but I had a nice time with this one and I respect Dolly as an artist. Iconic album artwork!
Good clever songs, and Dolly's voice is of course unique and great. Hard not to like it... but hard to get super excited about for me.
a grand time
First time of listening. The queen of country gets the recognition she deserves here. The titular "Coat Of Many Colours" a semi-autobiographical song is one of the classics on this little gem of a country classic. Favourites Include the Above Title Track, "Travelling Man" "If I Lose My Mind" and "She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like)" A really good example of country music as "White Peoples Blues" some heart rending lyrics and a search for the strength of her roots in working class poverty and the fate of white working class women through "Torch Songs" is epitomised throughout this album. Rightfully on this list as it is "Dolly 101"
Probably like many of my particular ilk it took me a long time to see past the cultural presence and facade of Parton (at its peak in the late 70s and 80s when I was growing up) and realize her profound talent and originality. This is excellent, if mostly a shade shot of her very top tier
Not my type of music but there's no denying Dolly's songwriting chops and the arrangements are generally tasteful and melodies; timeless. 4 🌟
Dolly is just great. The album I think does drop off a *little* as it goes on, a few more upbeat tunes in the vein of Travelling Man would have done wonders to keep up the energy. Still brilliant though.
Not my kind of music. But because of her personality, not taking herself to serious, her stance on the R&R hall of fame I give this a yes
Lovely lovely lovely album
Бодрое кантри. Нравится. Музыка классная, нескучная. Звучит приятно и легко :) При том, что я не фанат жанра кантри.
It started of what I thought would be a heartbreak album before ending with a whole "This is who I am, take it as is." I think this is the first time that I've heard a Dolly Parton album and it was certainly interesting.
vmp
I'm from Kentucky. I have to like Dolly. She's a saint of a woman.
Dolly is great. I prefer acoustic guitar-picking country in a bluegrass style (Molly Tuttle), rather than steel, but that's just how country music was at the time. The songs and delivery are really good.
Great stuff, makes me feel like I’m at Dollywood, gotta love Dolly, I miss this type of country
The titular song is a classic, no doubt, but Dolly Parton does simple country songs so well. It's an incredibly breezy and simple album that's worth replaying. I love Dolly's voice and her approach to songwriting, I think that's worth being on the list alone. Given how big of a star she is, though, I think there's plenty reasons why we see this album here.
Ms. Dolly has quite the way of selling heartbreak. The few times the songs weren't about romance, I felt I didn't enjoy as much. "The Mystery of The Mystery" felt jarring in the middle of the other songs, and "Early Morning Breeze" felt more folk-pop than anything. Still, the rest of the songs are great and Ms. Dolly is a national treasure. Favorite tracks: "Coat of Many Colors", "Here I Am"
Iconic Dolly
Liked it much more the second time through
I haven't really listened to much Dolly in my life, but I like it!
SImplismente a rainha do country
Great country music album. Classic
Dolly can make a bad story beautiful. She has a upbeat way of going through a bunch of negativity and making it sound like a dream. This album is song bye an angel and does not contain fluff. Most song are under 3 minutes and there should be no excuse not to give this story of poverty, bad love, and being overlooked because your a woman album.
I think that maybe I just don't like modern country because this was excellent. Older country tends to feel more similar to folk, and I appreciate the storytelling that Dolly does here. Coat of Many Colors was stuck in my head for days!
The good songs are great, some are a little fanciful.
I like it! Plain folk-pop
1971. Coat of Many Colors, Traveling Man
Parton manages to invoke each short song with so much emotion and drama. A master storyteller
4/5. Country usually ain’t my think but Dolly drives a hard bargain
maybe 4.5/5
I only really knew 9-5 and Jolene Dolly so this was great to hear! Kind of tragic though
Coming back to Dolly, I feel less judgemental of sentimentality! I love "Coat of Many Colours" and "The Way I See You." The lyrics of "If I lose My Mind" makes you sit up and listen, particularly considering this was released in 1971.
Great easy listening, hard to find something not like about this, country at its most enjoyable
Ms. Parton is a legend. 'nuf said.
viraj gut 4/5 fav trackz: early morning breeze traveling man -------------------------stay cool 8 - )
Luv dolly
Traveling Man is a bop, everything I like about real country music. A few songs are too Bible-y for me, but overall, really solid album.
This was a great listen! I'm not massively into country, and only really familiar with Dolly Parton's inescapable mega hits, so it was great to hear something from her I wasn't already passively sick of. Fave track - toss up between "Traveling Man", "The Mystery of the Mystery", or "Early Morning Breeze"
She's a national treasure. I'm not a country fan by any stretch of the imagination but I love Dolly.
que belleza
Nice!
Not a big country fan, but there is something about this which is somehow joyous. It just sounds like someone who is happy, which makes it difficult not to like. 3.5/5.
I listened to this album like it was one consistent track album. I didn't see the time fly. Very good lyrics, melodies and vocal.
Chill out country, like it. Probably won't be going and listening to Dolly's back catalogue. Glad to give her this revenue for the vax though. Cheers Dolly
Dolly is such a timeless storyteller. Most of her music isn't really for me, but it's still really good music.
A living saint and a great album.
A great album. I've heard Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, I Will Always Love You, and a couple other songs from Dolly, but never a whole record. This was beautiful and enjoyable and felt like it should have been longer.
New to me. Has a very old school / country feel to it. Starts off slow but kicks it up a notch with the second song. Very wholesome lyrics. Rather short record with "only" 27 Minutes.
Traveling man 👌
Absolutely beautiful stories and songs. I don’t go out of my way for country music but Dolly really does a great job with this one. The production is clean and clear, and her message gets across the whole album.
Dolly <3
First experience with any Dolly Parton. Good stylistic range. Big fan of the song where she calls her neighbor a ho (euphemistically ofc)
Great album. Tapped my foot all the way through. I don't listen to this genre but enjoyed.
she captures a cuteness with this album that i don't think i've heard anywhere else.
Very traditional country music with some great vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and sweet country twang. My favorite tracks were the more upbeat ones, like the title track and Traveling Man. I also liked Here I Am. My least favorite was The Mystery of the Mystery, but not terrible, just a little extra preachy.
Can’t hate on Dolly. She’s a treasure even if her music isn’t my taste.
Was pleasantly surprised. This is a tight, concise, tuneful album. I wasn’t expecting it to be so accessible and so ‘pop’ based on the preconceived notion in my head of what I assume country music sounds like. This is really good stuff.
Love me some Dolly!!
country tunes, catchy, not one for heavy rotation but nice enough
Beautiful
Love some Dolly, not the best of her album but solid all around. 3.5 but rounding up
4/5
4.2 + love that storytelling classic country music. Dolly Parton is an amazing songwriter and this is one of her best.
nice to hear dolly in what i take to be her prime - she's still going strong, but 'merican culture in 1970 was primed and ready for her music. it's not really my thing, but she does sing like a bird
Very good. Very Dolly.
Solid classic country
Good.
Fun stuff, enjoyed it a fair bit. Dolly is cool.
Album has some nice songs, but it's not really my thing
