meh rock
Neither good nor bad. Didn't really move me
Prince has some awesome albums. This isn’t one of then
Prince was very talented - but its just not my thing at all. This overstayed its welcome
Not the album for me. Its no 1999.
Prince isch sicher än grossartige Künschtler, chan trotzdäm nüt aafange mit sinere Musig.

Nimi biisi loistava. Sitten menee fiilistelyksi joka ei iske.
zwei bis drei
Not for me. Too synthy beats that makes it feel old and not in a good way. 2 star? Almost first 1 star
A few good songs but too many weak drum machine and synth tracks to be considered great.
I really wanted to like this. The singles on here are great: Sign o the times, Starfish and coffee, If I was your girlfriend are all excellent songs. Everything else kinda sounds easy-to-forget/all the same.
Obviously a good artist but not my cup of tea
I know people love and revere Prince, but I am still not one of those people.
*whispers quietly* I don't understand the admiration for Prince & his music, because frankly, it is ass; it is very not good. I am not going to pretend like I enjoyed any minute of this album. That being said, no one has ever had as much swagger as Prince did. And for that, he gets an extra star Best Song: Sign 'o The Times Rating: 3/10 (Irritating) Stars: 2/5
Oof. This was a long listen. Wish I could say it was pleasant but unfortunately it wasnt 2 ⭐️
2.5 - it was alright. A little let down. It had some cool songs but it didn’t feel that special
People like this?
Not my style...
I acknowledge that people feel that Prince is a musical genius / prodigy and I concede that he is without a doubt an amazing guitarist! He may also have some great party / dance tunes. However, none of his music has ever made me “feel” anything.
I don't ike this song because of the beat. I would not recommend this song. I don't like this song because it is not my type. I would not recommend this song
I don't really like this album because I don't like how the instruments sound and how heavy they are, and I don't like what the lyrics mean. I would not recommend this album to someone else because I feel like they wouldn't like music like this since it's very different to other popular music nowadays. I would give this 2 stars out of 5.
If you like old music then you would like this album. The only thing I really like about the song "If I was your girlfriend" Because of the lyrics and the instruments in the background and also his voice. I don't really like this album because I don't like all of the songs on here. I wouldn't recommend this album because I don't like really any of the songs.
I loathe prince, even more so since this thing has thrown me 3 of his crap albums. Same shite but at least he was consistent.
Poor for prince
This album is superbly overrated, the best moments on this is Prince attempting rip off David Bowie, the rest of it is total cheese.
I’m sure for most people there’s at least one well respected musician that they just don’t get. For me that is Prince. I could not stand this album. His production always sounds cheesy to me, and his voice is annoying.
Expected alot from this artist, but sadly this album didn't deliver. Nothing in particular stood out, which means it wasn't good nor bad. Hopefully theres another prince album that'll meet the expectations that have been set by word of mouth.
Prince normally isn't normally my thing so this was a little much for how long this album was. Would not listen again
Meh, it was okay. Way too long of an album for what it was. Won't relisten
This album is definitely very "Prince-like", but I think it might have gone a little bit overboard with this style. It was too much for me, I enjoyed few songs, but felt assaulted by the music, the continuous beat over 5 minutes songs, lack of tempo changes, just same style over and over again. I wouldn't mind listening to some of the songs in a vacuum, but whole album was just unbearable. A bit waste of time.
It all sounds the same. The songs are very long, and the instrumentals stay constant throughout; they are not very dynamic. His voice is cool and the instruments are interesting, but for the first few moments. This would be fine background music for school work or a social event; it's inoffensive. I like starfish and coffee, it is goofy. These songs are not bad, just slow and maybe for dancing or cooking. It strikes me as an album to be listened to with someone else in the room. Ok, Disc 2 has more interesting tracks. At least, they are louder and more dynamic.
I'm not sure that we needed three Prince albums.
I must that didn't impress me much. Maybe I need more time to proper digest this.
it's just what i'd expected from a prince album.
Wonderful another double album and another artist I truly want to like but just can’t get into it. Respect to the great and powerful Prince, he fusion so many styles of music together on Sign O’ The Times but none of them are my style. 4.4/10
I was not moved until "U Got The Look." This album did not move me.
Kind of a slog
I thought I enjoyed Prince but maybe not. This is the kind of generic music they would play in a hotel lounge that is trying to have a vibe.
80s synth gitaar funk, meh
Some albums are made on alcohol some on psychedelics—this one sounds like it was made entirely on Viagra. Sign "O" the Times is Prince in full, unfiltered, permanently-horny overdrive, stretching a single album’s worth of ideas into a two-LP marathon of funk, falsetto, and feverish lust. From start to finish, it’s like he’s trying to seduce the listener, the microphone, and possibly the entire world, and Im just not interested, it gets exhausting when he just won’t quit. Like someone pestering you in a nightclub when all you want to do is have a dance. There are some nicer moments. “The Cross” is a banger of a tune, “Housequake” is just silly fun. But then there’s way too much filler, a lot of meandering, and If I Was Your Girlfriend, isn’t just weird, it’s creepy. It’s Prince at his most obsessive, whispering and crooning in a way that feels less like seduction and more like he’s watching you through the blinds. The album is overflowing with ideas, but it’s like he refused to edit anything. There’s a great single album buried in here, but as a double LP, Sign "O" the Times is a test of endurance. It’s like Prince was so in love with every idea that he refused to cut anything, and the result is something that feels less like a masterpiece and more like an overexcited teenager showing you all his unfinished demos. Iconic? I guess in a way. A great listen? Not really. Compared to Purple Rain it's just not in the same league.
Not my favorite. Still good though
A bit of a letdown from Prince. Not one memorable song on a double album is wild.
This did nothing for me
There still are better Prince albums. This wasn't that good.
As usual with Prince, I just don’t understand the fanaticism
80s garbage, Prince has done better
Average instrumentals, average vocals, goofy alter ego (made me laugh I guess) quite a lot of awkward moments. Favourite songs: the first one from each disk. Overall around 4/10
Roughly as annoying as any other Prince album
I don't get it.
Uh
I don't like prince
Wasn’t terrible but I didn’t love it either
Good beats, but not my vibe
It's ok
I didn't like this at all. Play In The Sunshine sounded awful, like it was recorded in a suitcase. The obnoxious squealing in Hot Thing was completely unneccesary. I just can't do Prince.
Nicht meins, würde ich nicht nochmal durchhören.
I certainly don’t believe the hype. I didn’t before and don’t know because his voice just starts to get annoying just like Costanza in Seinfeld saying Costanza to a possible girlfriend and then said girlfriend is like I can’t get that name out of my head. Also you don’t need a bunch of long songs
Just painful. It started off okay but I've learned that Prince only made good singles, never great albums. All his albums that we've had so far (which are supposedly his best) have been either okay or hot trash. This was no different. First off, it's an hour and 20 minutes. No album should be that long. Secondly, the first couple songs start off okay, decent even, and then fall off a cliff. It's just a bunch of whatever nonsense lyrics or just Prince doing his squeaky falsetto over and over and over and over again. Also the "drums" actively annoyed me. Dude is still super horny and manages to have about half the album be about his sex drive. I don't understand how this fool got so famous.
uuuuuugggghhhh. way too long, too much falsetto, overly synthesized, and all sounds the same. after the 1st 2 tracks, I was done
I want to like this a lot more than I did. It's so..inconsistent. Just when I feel like an idea is about to flourish into a cool track it lets me down and falls flat. Not everything is mediocre here but so much of it is. Still, I respect the weirdness this album brings.
First side is really mediocre. No hooks. Side two is marked improvement but not really enough to save the whole endeavor. I’d like to round up to three stars out of respect for Prince but the album really doesn’t deserve it. Prince is an interesting artist in that he has SO MANY crazy-great songs but man alive so much more middling crap.
I just don’t get the fuss about the dirty little puppy that was Prince. Everything is just so overlong, and so much is repetitive and never really goes anywhere, and it just bores the wrinkly tits off me. The one high point was the somewhat-out-of-left-field rocker The Cross, which has an incredible drum sound, but even then I was getting bored. It just does not tickle my pickle.
...
Didn't love this. Don't really get the Hype about it
i dont care for it but a couple were ok
I've never been a big fan however I can tolerate his music in small doses.
Sounds like something you'd hear in a bar and wouldn't care about or remember the moment you left.
No songs really stood out for me and the only good tracks were play in the sunshine you got the look and if i was your girlfriend 2/5
Wanted to like it more but didn’t really stick with me. Not terrible tho.
Not one of the purple ones best - mediocre
I didn't expect a weird electronic album. I was getting a little bored listening to it and kept finding out there were more songs. This isn't for me.
I just find Prince's style boring and mostly unchanging. There were interesting moments of instrumental mixing but not enough to save the whole album
This all felt a bit bland and repetitive, I think it stems from the drum machine, seems like the same beat all the way through each track with no variation
It's taken me so many attempts to listen through this album, but I've finally attempted it while I'm in the right mood to at least get through it. There's a really broad variety of stuff on there, and I quite enjoyed some of the funkier ones (Housequake) and the last few, including the rocky one, but I still think Prince just isn't for me. I found the poppier tracks left me completely cold.
I don’t remember much of this album when it came out, maybe since it was overshadowed by Purple Rain and 1999. After listening to this, I feel Prince wrote better songs for other artists at the time. Other than a couple of songs, unsure I’d give this whole album another listen.
Rollo patatero
Prince was an insanely talented musician and had soul for days. But his songwriting was very hit or miss. I couldn't get myself into this album and found the album fading into the background and not engaging at all.
Was good at first, but too much
Title track aside nothing on this really stood out and for a double album that's a lot of hard listening. Very disjointed, very over indulgent...
Didn't enjoy this one. 2/5
Not sure why Prince was so popular. This was all just mediocre at best to me
I keep trying, I just can't get that much out of Prince, maybe he was a musical genius. Even though he inspired many other musicians I like, I can't get on with him. And it's the same with this album. Maybe it's great, but I don't feel that way. I probably won't listen to it again. 2/5
Creative, but not that good...
Waited for the opening song to get going and kick into another gear for 5 mins but it never came. And that was the case for a lot of songs on this album. Pretty boring and repetitive and just waiting for something good to happen. The opener had the most plays on Spotify so thought it would be the best (or close to) but it wasn't anywhere near. Play In The Sunshine was next and was immediately a better song. Side 2 is much better. The Cross and Adore are so very easily the best songs as they have the best vocal performances of the album. The Cross also builds to something pretty damn good, almost heavy metal. Overall it's just a bit wanky for my liking. Which I maybe could have guessed if I were to prejudge what I thought Prince would be like. Really not my thing at all. Half of the tunes sound like they would be okay for background music in an 80s industrial club or something, but to actually listen to, not good. Really like Prince's voice though. The non industrial sounding songs are much better, otherwise it sounds like I am listening to a bad radio station on GTA Vice City.
I just can’t get into Prince, this was fine. 2.5
Added 6 tracks to the 1001 Experience Playlist and that number shocks me, it felt like 30 minutes in between good songs. Prince has some all time bangers but his mid & late career isn't my favorite.
Didn't like it. Very 80s R&B
Wow prince is weird
Only 3 or 4 good songs. When LP artwork was great
This is the best 80s-dance, synth-psych, neo-funk, crypto-soul, agit-pop album I've ever heard. Too bad I don't like any of those things. Ok, I take it back synth-psych sounds like it could be good.
I enjoy Prince -- but apparently not as much as the next guy because this is never making my top-100 album list like Apple Music. And 2 lp definitely stretches my interest level
Ah, Prince, gifted, so capable, such a beacon and groundbreaking artist, yet he is so uninteresting to me. I try. I do try. I'm just not moved. So, moving on with a 2 star rating.
It's alright, none of the songs really felt captivating enough to listen more than once
Sign of the Times was a great start to the album. After that I quickly lost interest. Stopped halfway - was far from being unlistenable, but was just very meh.
probably 2.50 but it feels needlessly long could i write poetry to this? n
Way too long! Way too much synthesiser! 2.5 stars. Sorry.
Meh, not really for me
RnB, 1987 -> 2
Really boring, can’t be his best surely?
I am sad to say that I don't think this music is timeless. Didn't really enjoy, I'd rather listen to anything else.
Kind of a snoozefest :/ Sorry Prince (RIP), but not his best work. Fine and serviceable.
2 Stars (5/15)
I didn't actually like this one much. Decent parts but didn't hold me through the album Will I listen to again: 1%
I've never really figured out Prince. Reviews fell me I'm missing something and he's an all time great, but while I enjoy it I don't hear that level. This isn't his best album and kind of meandered some. I'm glad that people love this but I don't all that much.
Seems, I don't know... too indulgent? Not for me. 2.125
Just sort of mediocre pop / R&B. It wasn't offensive, but nothing stood out to me.
✅ parts of this are really cool, and you can totally see why Prince is so influential. But this is way too long and it felt like it dragged because of that. If they had trimmed this to even 55 minutes instead of 80, it would be a stronger album.
Music was fine but Prince's voice got a little screechy
I feel like I was wanting and expecting more out of the first Prince album I listened to. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't a standout. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
Never really got on the Prince hype train. Prefer his older work which is much more funky.
Prince is overrated. There, I said it.
✅ can really hear that technology caught up to the sound prince was trying to make. the space on this recording, the production in general is fabulous. hard to earn a double album and this one wanders around a fair amount. some cool tracks, but not a solid sense of where it's going. feels like it cooked a little too long.
Yes why not j'ai pas écouté en entier
Dont like prince don’t like rnb, but i can’t say it’s terrible music
I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" & “The Cross” . Ich war darüberhinaus froh als das Album durch war.
This was a disappointment, I had high hopes and this fell flat for me.
Never been much of a prince fan other than a few songs. This album sounds so dated. Nothing really stands out here to me.
I have resigned that I will never understand Prince and that is ok.
This album is not for me. It was quite boring and I have no interest in returning to it. 2/5
It was OK. There are way better prince songs.
This sucks - some of it is cool but most of it sucks, so it sucks!
First disc nearly made me quit. Second disc brought it back.
Couldn’t be bothered with that I’m afraid
Oh I loved this... so playful, funky, silly and inventive! I knew the hits (and U Got The Look and Sign O The Times are amazing) but the rest of the album tracks were new to me. Souch fun. 4/5
I did not enjoy this
Typically I make myself listen to the entire album even if I don't like it. After an hour of this I had to give up. Sorry, Prince, you remain too damn 80's for me.
I appreciate what Prince does, but many of the tracks don't connect with me.
I really tried to like this. I turned it up and really tried to get into it. No dice. Then I had to pause it for a meeting, and I'm like "how much more of this do I have to listen to?" Turns out I was on the second last track of the first disc of a 6 CD set. Nope, DNF. Two stars because I didn't really hate it, I just didn't like it.
Not the best Prince album.
This album just screams 80s but not in a good way.
this was quite bad actually? it sounds so dated and a couple of the songs are unlistenable (housequake, if i was your gf). saved from being 1 star from the couple good songs.
very, of the times. but dude can rip
I was happy to listen to a bit of Prince but I really didn’t love this album. The opening track is fantastic and I remember it premiering back in the 90s and being so engaged by the video but the rest of the album didn’t work so well for me.
Disc 2 way outplays disc 1. U got the look is best song and sounds like it's a Ruby Rap hit. The cross started out slow but finished strong and with a sound way unexpected from prince. He was huffing some helium for a few songs that I wasn't into. Didn't know he had an alter ego.
There's a couple of good songs mixed in but overall too long and relatively skippable. When Prince is on the music is fun and sexy, but I just don't think its sustainable for 80 minutes. It's an OK album but I feel it takes the place of something more deserving. To echo previous comments about Prince he has a ton of music and I just don't think I want to sift through 50 hours to find the 30% that are worth listening to. Some of his music is great but plenty of it is "meh". Despite being a fan I'll stick to primarily greatest hits with Prince. 2.31 stars
Not my thing at all. But the first song does kinda slap, and there are a few interesting guitar moments thrown in there
Aattelin, että Prince olisi enemmän rockia. Tää on vähän michael jackson tyyppistä. Parhaat: Sign O The Times, Slow Love, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
I’m not sure what the problem is, but I just can’t get into Prince. I feel a little guilty because it’s almost 100% certain that some other artist I love has been influenced by Prince, but I just can’t get there. This was long and tedious for me.
This is ass lol
Very much Prince, but otherwise didn't stand out or give me any major hits
That was not the experience I was expecting from a prince album. Prince was about 29 when this album was put out. The album was a bit of grind to be honest, but with moments of flare. I hit the Spotify "like" button on one of the tracks "Strange Relationship". Nice deep cut to have in the back pocket.
Feels dirty, but I struggle so much to get into Prince. There was so little I enjoyed to this album
Don't really get Prince
Apple music player a flight of the chochords album instead seemingly
I try, I really try to like Prince. This didn't help!
I’m not a big Prince fan in general, but usually I can find a song or two in the album that I like. Not the case here. I didn’t like this one.
I don't even like purple rain, so me disliking this album didn't come as a surprise to me.
Not one of princes best, but certainly good if you’re a fan
Regular.
Legend has it that someone once asked Eric Clapton what it felt like to be the best guitar player in the world and he replied, "I don't know. Ask Prince." Prince's live act was legendary. And here we have him trading all of that in for sequenced synths and drum machines. I get that he wanted a change of pace. But the product is little more than mildly interesting. And not infrequently it sags into self-parody. I can imagine the Ballad of Dorothy Parker or If I was Your Girlfriend being the product of a Chappelle Show skit. I'd give 4 stars to Dirty Mind or Controversy and 5 to any of 1999, Purple Rain, or Around the World in a Day.
Ok, so I've given Prince another chance, and I still don't understand it.
Love Prince generally but this didn't work for me
I wanted to like this more than I did
Pretty average Prince album. Super long with none of the big hits
Interestingly, Prince was heavily involved in my previous album (Madonna - Like A Prayer). I generally don't really like Prince except for maybe a few of his bigger hits. I didn't like this album. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Sign O' The Times Rating: 2
4.5/10 Highlight: Sign o the Times
I wasn't into this one. I guess I don't really get Prince. I liked 1999, but everything else has sorta bounced off me. Slow, repeat-y, and I don't get locked into his grooves. 2/5
Not engaging. Singing really let's this down. Some good melodies.
Goddam why does this have to be 80 minutes long. While there aren't any particular tracks I disliked, none of them created an atmosphere that can have me engaged for that long. I want to like Prince but for some reason I just don't really get it. Fav songs: - Sign O' The Times - Housequake
High highs low lows and way to bloated 5/10
Nice.
chill
People like prince, Im not too much of a fan.
didnt dig it Significant 44/134 Liked 21/134 Added 6/134 YNN
This album sums up everything about prince. Occasional moments of genius, way too many songs and way too many songs that outstay their welcome. And how many songs can he write about wanting to hump somebody? Prince is positively productive yet profligate.
i listened to purple rain for the first time as part of this 1001 albums list and it was phenomenal, intriguing, unique. this... was not. it tasted like a big old piece of 80s cheese with some curious little bits here and there, which, upon closer inspection, were revealed to just be mold. these songs all just sound like someone left the generic 80s radio station on in the background and don't really have anything truly exciting or evocative going on. the double album seems completely unnecessary, as I'm not sure there are enough interesting ideas here to even carry a single disc. i was going to give this three stars since it's still prince and everyone else seems to love this album, and i even went back to relisten to many of the tracks just to make sure i wasn't way off base, but i honestly don't think i'd come back to any of these tracks so I'm talking myself into a two. favorites: sign o' the times, play in the sunshine, starfish and coffee, i could never take the place of your man
Not for me.
Meh....
2nd Prince album in the last week. Better than 1999, but not my style.
I can appreciate how talented Prince is, and the impact he had on American culture and music is undeniable. But FFS, there’s just so much synth in this album. I just… can’t.
eh i dont rly fw prince, some of it groovy but nothing enough to catch me yk
I’m really surprised how much I disliked that
Prince is a great entertainer and guitar player, but what the hell was this album. It was so bad I questioned whether something was wrong with the system I was listening to it on. Not his best work for sure.
I guess I just don't love prince. It's nothing that really captivates me.
Couple of interesting songs. Mostly sounds like a bored person messing around in their home studio.
It's okay. Not my jam.
Album could’ve been one disc. Lots of duds on imo. Prince went too heavy into the 80’s tech with this one.
I just don’t get the Prince and Bowie hype. I’m so glad I didn’t have to pretend to like it when it was at its peak.
Boring
Not my vibe. Would have been good to have on in the background but not to actually listen to. Didn’t have the same catch or hook as his most popular songs. Can appreciate his artistry
Some decent songs I enjoyed, but many songs felt like they overstayed their welcome.
Les sonorités ne m'intéressent pas vraiment.
No hits, sounds like a bunch of songs thrown together.
Prince is an absolute coomer.
I enjoyed a few songs, but most of the album wasn't my style. Prince is a brilliant song writer, but this album didn't showcase that, in my opinion.
I love Prince, I did not love this Album. Long and meh. Nothing grabbed me really.
I am not a fan of the early keyboard sound and it makes the rhythm track feel very juvenile or artificial. The better part, his vocals, gets lost beneath it.
Not a prince fan apparently. Didn't do anything for me.
The end of the album really starts to shine... but man the majority of this album felt like a drag to me. Way too much, and some of it is too boring
SO 80s!
Absolutely boring - didn't know that prince made such monotonic music
My second Prince album and I still does not understand the appeal. If someone can explain me why person with cartoonish voice singing about sex should be appealing? I am not saying it aged badly but I don’t see how would this succeed released today
I thought this would be good because it’s Prince. It was not. It was too long - felt like a gazillion years - and boring. There were no standout tracks. Dull.
This album was disappointing. I haven't really listened to much Prince, but I've heard a lot about him, so I had high hopes going into it, but they were not met. The songs all seemed like they had potential but they just didn't click with me, and as a double album it went on far too long with far too little variety. It wasn't awful, but I'm definitely never coming back to it. 2/5
One of my favourite musician/artist is Steven Wilson, and Prince is his Idol. Soooo I was excited to finally dive in to Prince. I was happy to see it was this album because Steven Wilson has covered Sign 'O' The Times in his covers series album. I can see where SW gets his influence from. There is a lot of good inrumentation on this record. And a lot of like instruments between the two: synthesizers and drum machines to name a few more prominent ones. I feel like this is a concept record but i didn't dive into the Wiki on this record. There are a few songs with higher pitched vocals by Prince, almost as if he was pretending to be someone else? A protagonist? Or just a different character in the story? As interesting as it is, I think it was poorly done. The vocals came off really annoying. In fact a lot of his vocals are pretty annoying... Almost cringey. I guess maybe at the time it wasn't... But they didn't age well. There are certain points where he almost sounds exactly like Michael Jackson. The lyrics are awful. And honestly this album as a whole was very disappointing. Especially when I was very excited to finally try and get into Prince. I really hope his records are different. Perhaps he is the type of artist who doesn't write the same record twice? Just like Steven Wilson. That being said, I can't deny the influence he has had, not only on SW but on many artists. I only knew about Raspberry Beret and Purple Rain before listening to this record. That and his amazing guitar solo when he and a few other artists covered While My Guitar Gently Weeps... Which may be the best live guitar solo I've ever watched. I want more of that Prince! I don't want whiny, synthetic-poppy-drum-beat, dance Prince. I can't give up on him yet. But this record was a hard listen....
I didn't connect with any of the songs on this album, and since this is a double album, it made it feel like a double drag having to slog through it. Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: No
Nah, not my kind of thing. Next please :)
Not Princes best album by far and I say this as a fan of the man's talents and career
Better than 1999. Groovy in that obnoxious 80s falsetto pop way that I don't particularly care for. Still unpleasantly horny at times.
Just not my thing really. Has some bangers though - Slow Love especially.
good not really my fav kind of music but slay
1st
Bastante meh.
Groovy but the lyrics don’t quite hit the spot for me.
not my taste
Didn’t like this one
I must be missing something. The 80s were a weird time, man
Not a strong album imo
If I Was Your Girlfriend'.
meh
Solid 2
some good jams but overall not my personal taste.
Not the album to listen to if you want to immediately get into Prince. It would be like listening to Bitch’s Brew as an intro to Miles Davis
I am certainly more of a Purple Rain fan. It features perfect storytelling, but many songs sound like Michael Jackson rejects. Favorite Song: Slow Love Sleeper Hit: The Ballad of Dorothy Parker Worst Song: Housequake
Meh
Prince wrote a LOT of songs. Not all of them great.
Some of these songs are great. Starfish and Coffee for one. I do want this sound to be for me but I don’t know how true that’s really going to be. Maybe just a very specific collection of songs. Strange Relationship, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man are alright. It just doesn’t seem like there’s much of a place in my life for this sound.
Starts well, but not mt cup of tea
I get why it’s iconic, but I just am not really into his sound
Not my favorite Prince record.
downloaded 1&6. i dont really like prince, he has some predatory behaviour that got swept under the rug
Weird, I thought I had reviewed this earlier today. But it started off ok, but then didn’t keep me interested
So it turns out I don't really like Prince that much. There were a few good songs though.
Blind album: never heard a single song from it. I'm supposed to like this, I know I am. I know this is in the same level as Purple Rain, but the title track couldn't even hook me in. I'm super divided on this and it sounds like Prince in his true form. Credit where credit is due, the sound is classic and the style is awesome. It's just not for me...
This is a perfect example of 80s shit which has aged terribly and probably didn’t sound very good in the first place. I respect Prince but this bored me to tears
I really wanted to like this but I just didn't. This album just felt really dated and nothing about it really worked for me. Hopefully his other albums are better but this ain't it.
Wish I liked it more. Trying to get into prince. This was only ok for me.
mouai repetitif un peu délirant
This is not the sound I had associated Prince with, at some points the instruments sound like he is using a ruler held down on a table and using the vibration of the part hanging over the edge as a percussion instrument. Its interesting but not good imo

Lucky I did not die from boredom
I don’t get Prince. I was quite surprised to see all those positive reviews. It seems I’m just not hearing what everybody else is. Sure, there are some good moments but none of those is really outstanding. And the rest.. this album is just super bloated and you can’t convince me otherwise. It’s boring and repetitive, with goofy humour on top. I was just waiting all the time for it to end but nooo, it’s 80minutes long. It does get a bit better at the very end, but it does not really feel gratifying. is everyone just saying it’s so amazing because they’re supposed to? Im really curious. 2/5
Convinced there’s more to Prince than this, so I was very surprised to see this record being talked about as his peak. At least half the songs pssed me by as being just a bit mediocre. Not to mention all over the place. I like a bit of mess, but when it lacks coherence it just sounds a bit desperate. That said, this grew on me the second time round and a few songs started to jump out more. Loved the lyrics to Sign o the times, and Hot Thing was probably my favourite. Slow Love / U Got the Look were canny too, as were the live tracks. Hated The Ballard of Dorothy Parker. And loved the music to If I Was Your Girlfriend but I hated the way he sings about 80% of this. Overall, a bit underwhelming. Not the iconic masterpiece I was expecting! 2.5
Not at all what I was expecting given the fanfare. Kiss, Purple Rain, Raspberry Beret, and When Doves Cry are absolute classics. Unfortunately none of them are on this album. Severely underwhelming. Really scattered. The drums do really stand out on the mixing of many of the tracks - which is fine as they are generally excellent. I was thinking about 1.5, rounding down because I was annoyed, but the drums are great.
Not my fav. Sry
Surprised by how much I didn't like this.
I was very surprised at how much I disliked this album. I didn’t mind a couple of songs especially towards the end of the album but some of the tracks I thought were so bad, in particular Housequake and Hot Thing (the lyrics “Hot Thaaaang, barely 21” really don’t do it for me). Production is very 80s and the lyrics are very hit or miss; sometimes ok (but a little on the nose) like on the title track or The Cross but mostly just horrendous like the aforementioned Hot Thing. This album was really not my thing, only not one star due to a couple of better tracks.
Couldn’t get into it
Never been a fan
Otro disco prescindible.
Rollo patatero
This is a big Meh from me. I few songs are upbeat and hip but I’m just not that into this album.
Talent, but not my jam.
I get why it might be good but was a DNF for me. Songs outstayed their welcome.
- Very distinctive sound - A little campy for me - feels like one big soundtrack for the 80s
en varsinaisesti tykännyt. tykkäysasteikolla alhainen, varsinaisesti. tupla albumi oisi voinut olla tällä kertaa puol albumia HEH!!!! paskalla kävin tämän aikana, oli huono paska. en muista tarpeeksi että voi objektiivinen olla, vai löytyykö siinä itsessään objektiivisuutta? miettikää huomenna tuota...älä nyt.... i could never take the place of your man
Samey, meddling and all together way too long. I thought a lot about the perfect length of an album. I heard somewhere that the most difficult thing to do is to cut things out. I think they failed with this one, it's just way to long. The perfect album length for me is probably around 40 min and this album is double that. I just don't see how this album was particularly ground braking. Maybe the problem is I never really liked Prince and this album is no exception.
Prince er liksom ikke mon greie
meh
I just don't get the appeal. AT. ALL
Definitely a representation of the 80s. Has a cliched sound, which I admit probably represents an era Prince himself influenced. Not my cup of tea.
I appreciate the talent, but other than the title song none of the tracks move me in the least. Sorry, I tried.
Not a prince fan
I feel like Prince is trying to bang my eardrums the whole time and it is making them very uncomfortable because they are prude Was hoping for more shedding Not my choice album to listen to while entering data into spreadsheets I Could Never Take the Place of your Man shreds like I wanted
Hmm. I just don't get Prince. Had some nice sounds though. Just sounded like wannabe Michael Jackson to me. Idk. I'll give it another spin based on the reaction other publications have for it.
This is the second Prince album that I've received and I still fail to see what all the hype is about. To me he's just a hyper-sexualized, edgier version of Michael Jackson. Its interesting to see a full drum kit prominently featured on the album cover because most of the songs feature an annoying electronic drum kit. I'm also not a fan of his alter ego "Camille" with his higher pitched voice, it's a bit creepy. Thank gawd the record company convinced him to strip down his triple album concept to a "mere double" album because this was a chore to get through.
I honestly wish I liked Prince more, but it just is not for me. It's some funk music here, but I just do not like it much and I cannot really put my finger on it. Maybe it's his voice.
This was my first sit-down-and-really-listen-to-Prince Prince experience. And I’m sorry to everyone who loves Prince but I didn’t really like it.
So flipping cheesy. Some cool industrial sounds but overall pretty underwhelming. Sorry Prince 🤴
I generally make a point to not skip through songs, but so many on this album are just way. too. long. Without the overly long songs this album would just be mid, but having to skip songs halfway through for my sanity pulls it down. Best tracks: Sign O the Times, Strange Relationship, and The Cross.
Well, the production was good.
Something about Prince's music has never resonated with me. He definitely is a quintessential 80s sound, but a generic 80s sound. This was a long snooze fest for me.
Meh
I think I’ve decided that my beef with Prince is his vocals (which are whiny) and his lyrics. What is the song It anyways? The guy can very much play anything on the guitar. But the rest is not for me. I did like some of the funk elements of this particular album though.
Boring
Meh
Good prince but kinda funky
My mom loves Prince so this will be interesting. I don't know if I'll come out of this as big a fan as she is but just like every album, I'm going in with an open mind. This kinda reminds me of Tusk but in a more put together way. Like everything is everywhere but somehow it all ties in. It makes me think that his voice could go out at any second. The song just sounds like he's straining it so much. At times he kind of sounds like Cow from Cow and Chicken and it's really jarring to hear. I wanna know how many people's kids were made to this album because there's no better application for it. I can't imagine putting it on and just hanging out listening to it.
Not gonna lie, Ik ppl like Prince, I just dont really get it for some reason. dk why.
Too long, unfocused
I have never listened to Prince before, and it turns out I do not like Prince.
2.75
favourite song: play in the sunshine least favourite: the rest of them i judt dont get this at all. wasnt into it and it was way too long.
This is an alright album. As someone who isn't a major Prince fan, I didn't recognize any hits but there were some good songs on it. I felt like this was more of a chore to get through though and don't think I'll revisit this one again, aside from the track "The Cross", which stands alone as a unique sounding track on this album that I really enjoyed. Standout Tracks: Play In The Sunshine, Starfish And Coffee, U Got The Look, The Cross, It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
I honestly had a hard time listening to this. 80s music is just not my thing.
I don't think I'm much of a Prince fan. This is the first of his albums I've listened to in it's entirety, and while there were a couple songs I liked, a lot of songs felt like filler. Really the whole album felt like a filler album, and that's a shame. I thought giving Prince a proper shot would change my thoughts on his music.
Repetitive drums. Kind of boring. Sounds like the crew is just warming up. Maybe this was interesting when drum machines were first invented.
Did not enjoy this one at all - most tracks were bogged down in misguided synth melodies and rarely offered Prince a chance to let his vox shine. Feels like a stale relic of the 80s more so than any kind of lasting classic.
Look, I just don't get Prince. Leave me alone.
2, I respect the uniqueness of the album but wasn't for me
I just don’t like prince. I said it.
It's a diverse, funky, soulful album. Prince's best album for sure. Deserving of being on this list. I can appreciate the genius behind it. I just don't enjoy it much at all. Not for me
I could never take the place of your man is a timeless Prince classic. Most of this album unfortunately stuck in its time. I can appreciate its influence at the time but I don’t feel it holds up
