Behalve Purple Rain heeft Prince nooit een plaatje kunnen maken wat me echt helemaal overtuigt, hoewel het nr Sing O' the Times wel echt helemaal te gek is.
Beetje lang album, maar Prince in topvorm.
I do enjoy the occasional Prince music but not sure about full albums. It’s the 80’s sound which my soul just can’t bear lol

Don't really see the fascination with Prince. Thought disc 2 was way better, but idk. Some of the beats are cool and have clearly been sampled since. Second listen through was a little more enjoyable.
Most double albums would be better as single albums.
why does it start out with such a depressing song? very interesting industrial electronic background percussions, but it really gets weird after dorothy parker. Starfish and coffee is hilarious, and slow love is pure SEX. forever in my life is great. U got the look pales in comparison to its Roxette counterpart. Very boring second half 6.5/10
Never heard this album before. 16 songs is a lot for 1 album. There were 4 songs that stood out in the album that really were great. Prince’s voice is versatile like his instruments. Not my favorite album of his but still would listen again.

The man (formerly known as prince) so nice we get him twice! Very glad I could dip my ears in some of the lesser known prince songs. While this album didn’t hit the same way the last one did, feeling more whispy and long, it was still enjoyable! No songs stuck out but I like this album cover because it is a perfect description of this album being a little all over the place and a lot to listen to.

Prince's ninth album & his most critically acclaimed, even though 'Purple Rain' was more successful. The album was certified platinum only 4 months after release, and was finally inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2017. Prince experimented with many genres and musical sounds in this album, including R&B, funk, soul, rock, and pop. Because of this, the album is considered by some to be Prince's magnus opus. I highly recommend this album to anyone wanting to listen to Prince.
I have heard this phrase associated with Prince, but definitely missed out on this album. It's pretty expansive! Basically, this is quintacential Prince. You have good stuff (Adore), weird stuff (If I was Your Girlfriend), creepy stuff (Hot Thing!), and everything in between.
Not sure if I'm giving this a fair shake because Spotify doesn't have the whole album on here, but this only had a couple of songs that I liked. The rest wasn't bad, but not great either.
I do love Prince, I mean the guy was a genius. But sometimes you feel that he never really embraced the notion that less can be more. "I could never take the place of your man" morphing into the Grateful Dead is sublime and "The Cross" almost becomes indie grunge. And that's after an hour of Synth laden pop. It feels like an album I need to listen to again, which says something.

Prince is a GOAT music artist. Now that the formalities are out of the way, I'll focus on the album. It's a weird product of it's time. I suppose that makes the name more fitting than not. There's lots of gated drums, funky synths, and it's all exacerbated by Prince's unique songwriting. He's so confident in his delivery though that Prince convinces me that it's great music. And there are certainly some great songs on here. But Prince doesn't wow me like he does for many others. I think he's certainly talented and worthy of praise, but I don't love any of his albums. That's just personal preference; I can't control that. It certainly seemed like Prince was trying to make a big statement about music and mankind as the 80's grew old, but I can't see much past the odd production choices and long runtime.
As with a lot of the records showing up in my queue, Sign 'O' The Times is something familiar but not something I spent much time with. I really like Prince and I enjoyed this work as well. It gets a little nasty, so it is not something I'd throw on with other folks around, but, if it comes up in my playlist I would not hit skip. Not my favorite Prince collection, but, have not heard much Prince that is bad...

about time i listen to a prince album. looking at the track list idt i know any of these songs. lyrics are insaaane in this first track. didn't love the sound though. loved the last minute or so of 'play in the sunshine'. 'the ballad of dorothy parker' is the first song i like the sound of. really nice. 'slow love' is okay. some songs are annoying, like 'hot thing', and others do nothing for me like 'forever in my life'. i'm bored. i had to look up who was singing 'if i was your girlfriend' it's just prince pitched up lol. 'adore' is so cute. well i'm done. pretty good i think. didn't love a lot of the songs but even those weren't awful and the good ones were pretty great.
Wasn’t my favourite album from The Purple One but I was just happy to be along for the ride
Didn't enjoy this quite as much as I would have expected. I just did a run through all of Ween's albums, and there were some weird parallels to draw that I didn't expect (pitch shifted vocals, genre bending, and an overly playful feeling).
Busy and ambitious.
The record starts of with an extremely strong title track, incredibily catchy and funky rhythyms. This continues on Play in the Sunshine, with it's creative ensembles and swingy energy. (due to the extremely below average recording quality, on Spotify at least, it is a necessity to listen to the Super Deluxe edition). After those two classics, the record switches to a more hip-hoppy and "clap your handsy" style, which gradually started to annoy me. On the other side of the spectrum, the more slow and mellow Dorothy Parker, I am unamused and find that Prince does not use his vocal qualities to create something unique or even enjoyable. The album does end on a strong note with U Got the Look, Strange Relationship and The Cross, of which the latter has an amazing raw sound brought by a thumping bass. Overall, I believe a 3/5 is a fitting score.
I appreciate the constant creative experimentation; however, I like other work from Prince more.
I respect the hell out of Prince who was a supreme talent. I think the man could play every instrument ever invented. Housequake sounds like a party at Prince’s house where we are all invited and I’m all-in. I’m also a big fan of The Cross. None of the other songs on the album definitely make me want to hear them again. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker could go away. Forever In My Life too. Most of the rest are nice and all, just nothing spectacular.
Some solid tunes and great production but overall not that memorable of an album for me.

The long run time can turn off from the great songs towards the end. Decent album overall, cool grooves, but it doesn’t showcase to a new listener all that Prince was.
The man can play and sing, and his music is almost instantly recognizable. I respect it, just don't love as much as his fans.

A really diverse and interesting album. Though there's only a couple of real highlights, nothing is really tragic... a lot in the middle of the road. It is a bit long though.
I liked this one better than yesterday’s, though not as much as Purple Rain. I think maybe I’m not as into 80s music as I once thought.

This is a hard one for me. I don't really like Prince as a whole. Mostly due to vocal deliveries and general style. He's obviously very talented in all aspects of music and music production, but the result isn't my cup of tea. Most of the instrumentation I like, but I enjoy it most when it's without the vocals. Side note: When the track "The Cross" played I thought it was a completely different band that came up after the album ended. Probably my favorite track cause it's the least "Prince-like" on the album. I actually like the vocal delivery on this one. It'd probably be a 3 or 3.5 but since I don't really "like" prince I will personally give it a 3. But, anything from 3-5 I think is justifiable.

A very odd and intimate album that just has Prince written all over it
Wanted to like this album. Started out strong. 80s vibe with some cool bass parts and arrangements. Then it got weird with the lyrics and the songs. Album went on for too long
Definitely displays Prince's range and diversity in songs. I wasn't too much a fan of the album overall, but it did have some good songs with provocative lyrics like "If I Was Your Girlfriend"

It was ok. Certainly not my favourite Prince album. I can't see how many reviewers consider it one of the best albums of the 80s.
An artist i have never really got into (especially the tunes of the early 90's) which were unclean but not in a good way) Will try and give it a fair hearing, even if I have never understood what the fuss was about. Christ nothing dates a record like syn drums, and they're all over this album, horrible. Really struggling with this one. I'm just not enjoying it. I get that he's an immensely talented man and a fantastic guitarist (his solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the concert for George is phenomenal) bit i just dont get it.. Not entirely sure that this album was meant for me. Its soaked in hot sweat and bodily fluids, which isnt my bag. Will persevere but my.mind is made up, i dont.like this record and it will remain unplaced in my racks. . An artist to be respected but not necessarily liked...
Wow, it seems Bruno Mars built an entire career ripping Prince off then huh? Prince is another revered artist I've spent a lifetime criminally underappreciating, so I was looking forward to this. Look, I'm an indie kid who grew up in floppy black jumpers moping to the Sisters of Mercy; tight, fun, funk-rock steeped in R&B was never going to be my thing. It can be toe-tapping, but for my tastes it was patchy, I liked some songs, the more self-indulgent and jazz-noodly the better other;s were, well hard work, I may have strained my eyes rolling at all the "oohs"...a double album of this was purgatory. Maybe i need to be in the garden chatting to mates on a sunny day, enjoying gin and tonics, to get on the right side of the vibe, it would definitely land much better. The individual songs vary from 2 to 4 but the album.en mass is just too much for me.
Didn't draw me in, maybe one day i'll listen again.
My first Prince album and I'm...disappointed.
Really not even close to the same tight quality of Purple Rain. Starfish and Coffee really makes Side A - the others are mostly a mixed bag of 2s and 3s. Side B is shorter but the song quality goes down a little. Especially if I was your Girlfriend and the cross which are both bad for different reasons. Side A: 2.6/5 Side B: 2.2/5 Total: 2.4/5 -> 2/5
No offence to the legacy of Prince, but this is an utterly boring album.

Started strong, then faded. Pure Prince vocals stand out on Sign O’ the Times and You got the Look; however, the rest varied in vocals and instrumental elements. I updated my playlist to include zero of these tunes.

mehhh 2.5 .. there’s moments i like and i love prince and his voice and whole thing obviously but im sorry to say he’s just not as good without wendy and lisa and the revolution . lesbians really make everything better sorry i really hope controversy is on the list. also i think we’ve been spoiled by all these 40 minute albums so an hour 20 double lp really feels like a slog

I listened through most of it. Prince has never quite been my cup of tea, for reasons I struggle to explain. I don't think I like his instrumentals, which feel sort of stripped down. And I'm not so crazy about his voice. I wish I felt differently and should probably give a more thorough listen sometime.

Prince is an artist who I respect but do not enjoy listening to for any extended length of time so what I did not want was a double album! There are of course brilliant moments, and I wouldn’t say there’s anything bad about this, but I’m just not a Prince fan I guess.
I don't really care for whatever style of music is that Prince does, acknowledging that he does have a few certified bangers. Those bangers were not present on this album though, so it gets 2/5 what else do you want from me

Prince is probably the biggest example of an artist who is renowned as a legend but I just can't get into. It's a me problem, I know. Purple Rain is fine as an album, but it doesn't move me like it does most people. This isn't as good as that. Prince was still undeniably cool, but his music apparently isn't for me.

With the hit singles being so iconic, it seems a no-brainer to dive into the albums for more treasure! But that is strange territory indeed, and not a welcoming place for the casual lister like myself I should have stopped after the title track

Like most Prince albums there are some great tracks (the singles) while the rest is often pretty average. This album is no different.
Album #203 Prince: Sign ‘O’ The Times I can only really blame my increasing distaste for Prince on this list. Before, I wasn’t a huge fan or anything, but I enjoyed Purple Rain a decent amount like everyone else. But because of this list, I’ve had to endure 3 Prince albums in one week, with two of them being double albums, and all three of them leaving me feeling like I need a shower. After my bad experience with 1999, I kept hearing that Sign ‘O’ The Times was actually Prince’s best, so I figured maybe down the line I would give it a spin; the list, however, felt that it was incredibly important that day came as soon as possible. Perhaps if I had given the proper time for my tastes to adapt and put my prior Prince experiences behind me, I would have enjoyed this album, but unfortunately, as it stands, this is just another bloated, uncomfortable mess, which clearly was not made for me. If I had to single out one thing that bothers me here more than the other Prince releases, it would probably be the amount of unnerving high-pitched voices that he puts on, but to be honest, most of my grievances have been universal amongst his albums. Not the worst thing ever, obviously, and sure, every now and then there is an enjoyable tune, but my god, am I sick of hearing Prince. #372 This was bobbins, the vocals for the most part were very strange and the production was very of its time. I can tell it’s influential from listening (in addition to knowing how influential Prince was) but it wasn’t until the last few tracks where I found something I genuinely liked. It was long and bloated too, I genuinely expected better from Prince - maybe I’ll get on better with other albums of his. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Listen before you die? ❌ Fave track(s): The Cross Rating: 4/10 ⭐️⭐️
I got halfway through this album and while it had like around 2 songs that were good, it just doesn't really seem like anything that special.

This was a 5-star great album that reflected the times in which it was produced in a great way. Then "If I Was Your Girlfriend" came on and I almost threw up from the cringe. That was a song people liked? Like without having a gun at their head? Like non-ironically? That song ruined this album.

I’m a fan of old school Prince. I had the posters on my wall when I was a young teenager. Saw him during his Purple Rain tour. He was fantastic. But the last album I bought from him in the 80’s was Around the World in a Day. He kind of lost me after that, due to changing musical interests on my part and his. I was not a fan of this one. He’s incredibly talented but this was not good in my opinion.
AC/DC have released 16 studio albums and they all rock. Truth is we all know they have maybe 5 different songs, but somehow they got 16 albums out of 5 songs and people love AC/DC and all their albums. Prince released 39 albums, first of all wrap your mind around that..thirty nine! We all know Prince has maybe 10 songs and he somehow got 39 albums out of those 10 songs. The difference is Prince pushed is luck and reworked those 10 songs over too many albums, and some of his albums are bad. This is one of those bad albums.

I just don't get this album. I love Purple Rain. I don't know if I've listened all the way through his other albums, but this album just seemed weak. From everything else I've heard from Prince this just wasn't up to par. 2/5.
I don’t mind Prince’s music, but it’s not something I seek out. I also enjoy other albums more than this one. Some of the songs felt like they dragged on a bit.
This album is the answer to question I never thought would have a Yes as the answer and that is "Could Prince Make A Bad Album". WOOF, Starfish And Coffee was TRASH. I could not imagine Prince writing songs this bad, but here we are. Started strong with the title track for the album and of course U Got The Look and If I Was Your Girlfriend are strong songs but not enough to save this from a low star count.

I can appreciate Prince as an artist, but I’ve never really liked his music. He’s insanely talented, amazing guitar player. His music just never really jived with me. This is unfortunately still the case with this album. A couple songs are good, but for the most part I didn’t get into them. It’s very well produced, and the instrumentation is great. It’s also too long. Some editing down would probably help a bit. Overall, the album is just fine.

On the last Prince album I was somewhat surprised to find I didn't really like it. It was really samey over the length of a full record, so I wasn't really looking forward to this. And then I looked at the running time and my enthusiasm dropped even further. Some stray thoughts: - The title track is fine but doesn't really build to anything. - Rhyming "lets jam" with "green eggs and ham" is a choice, but Housequake is very funky. - this is extremely 80s. - I liked The Ballad of Dorothy Parker backing vocals, but it was again very meandering. - by the time I got to the song It, it became fully apparent that I wasn't really going to like the second Prince album on the list. - the weird whooshing noise on Starfish and Coffee was **horrible** - I very nearly fast forwarded through it. - how did Prince become such a massive star? These albums are so dull for 90% of the run time. - U Got The Look just made me sad that I wasn't listening to The Look by Roxette. Another artist the generator has taught me that I don't like, I just thought I did. A grudging: 2/5

I live in MPLS - where loving prince is practically a religion- but I only really love purple rain as an album.
I never know what to do with Prince. One one hand he's mega talented and I guess I get why people like him. On the other hand, I really don't like very many of his songs
Não consigo, é muita coisa solta num saco sem fundo. Pra mim ele tem ótimas músicas, mas não bons álbuns. Acho que prova que ainda não me livrei por completo do meu desgosto pelos 80s. Mas acho que tô quase lá, garanto que grande parte é culpa do Prince.
Prince is one of those artists with great songs rather than albums. This is often called his best but it’s mostly made with a Linn drum machine and a Fairlight synthesizer, two of the worst sounding instruments ever, making it hard for even the best songs to come out listenable.

They had to name it "The Minneapolis Sound" because even *they* knew that all Prince's stuff sounded the same. Why does everything have that clunky drum sound and a similar arrangement. And the shreaking. And be too long. I bought the follow up to this, Lovesexy, in 1988 and really liked it. But that was before I grew tired of the thuddy drum machine, the synthetic band and the screeching. Sorry mate.
I really want to like this but it just drags out and is a bit boring. Nothing necessarily bad but like does Prince have good albums? Really doesn’t seem like it. Just listen to It’s Gonna Be A Beautiful Night and that’s all ya need. I liked Adore too.

Sign O The Times is an absolute banger. The rest: not so much. A mess different genres that never gets to the point. And the album is way too long. Drums sound fantastic though ... at the time of release, the LM-1 was already a thing of the past and nobody aside from Prince was still using it. This has really become a staple sound of his, and the lo-fi yet full-bodoes crunchiness sounds lovingly retro.
I was expecting better, almost looking forward to this one. But no, I didn't like it. One okay song, "The Cross", "Forever in my life" was embarrassing. 2/5

i don't understand why this is prince's most critically acclaimed album when i think that, for as much as there are standouts (the bass in "ballad of dorothy parker" was very nice) with interesting instrumentation and it is impressive as a solo effort, to me it fails to cohere as an album and more a scattering of disparate songs. this is most noticeable on a thematic level in that it opens with a very politically pointed song (the title track, even) yet the rest of the album is very far from that. a lot of these tracks needed to be shortened, broadly worked on more, or simply combined because there is so much repetition in content and form that it made for a slog to get through. even the moments where a flash of brilliance is witnessed, to me it felt drowned in the monotony of everything else failing to congeal into something enjoyable.
Not as good as the last Prince Album. I don't know why but it just feels like Prince isn't having as much fun here as other albums and it bleeds into the music. This is meant to be the socially conscious Prince album and I can hear it, but I don't think it does enough. The stripped out production, even the singing especially on the Camille tracks, just doesn't pop as much as it did before. I enjoy U Got the Look most, but I'm stuck in comparison mode with the previous Prince album I listened to and its just not there.

There is no denying Prince was a musical genius and songwriter, but I’ve never really got into him. I like that this album is varied and has a really good production, especially for 1987. I’m just not really into any one of these songs. Which is my exact sentiments for his entire catalog. I don’t even like the song Purple Rain that much, and it’s still one of his best songs.

Didn’t finish. Not my style, found it a bit repetitive at times.
I was very young in the 80s, so I missed a lot of the pop music in the moment, though I do have a lot of respect for Prince. The heavy production and use of synth sounds isn't really my thing, but what I did like about this album is that it feels representative of the time. You can hear the influences across genres: you hear back beats, you hear hip hop influences, obvious pop influences. You can also tell Prince has a Thom Yorke-like control on the compositions. Everything is deliberately chosen. With all that said, the first few tracks just felt way too busy for me. Things turned a corner around starfish and coffee & slow love, where we got into even more influences, especially the Soul influence in Slow Love. Overall, interesting mix of Genres, but I never really felt captured by the album. Not my favourite Prince album but not terrible. Top songs: 1. Starfish and coffee 2. Slow love

Not my Prince, not a very pleasant listen.
I can see the appeal here but it didn't get above 3 in my mind and with the length, was leaning in the 2 direction. Given how insanely famous he is, I'm surprised to have not known almost any of this album.
My feelings on Prince tracks are as varied as the tracks themselves. I really appreciate the variety that he throws in here, and in general I liked many of the slower tracks, but there are definitely several songs on this album that completely lost me. And it’s a pretty long album. The highlight for me was probably the title track.

Don't tell Mom I didn't like this one. I don't know what my favorite song was, but "if I was your girlfriend" wasn't it.

Listening back to this, all I'm thinking is USE DRUMS!!!! Every song that has the best drum machine of the day instead just sounds terrible. Side 4 seems to be immune from this, but doesn't have the best tunes. This hasn't stood the test of time. I didn't really enjoy it much, despite having a few great tunes scattered throughout. I'm quite disappointed.

Prince was never the chap for me either in his original form or when he became a hieroglyph. He was not totally a miss as he was undoubtedly a great guitarist. There are better examples of his guitar playing on other albums as this one is rooted very much in 80’s electronica. Sounding now very dated and of its time. 2/5 22/2/26

4/10 Top three of my most-overrated artists. I hated this and found myself shouting "ShutUpShutUpSHUUTTTTUPPPPP" as he squealed his disturbing attempts at seduction. The music isn't actually that good - Flight of the Concords have parodied this so well, it is hard not to hear it all as a big joke. I'm sure they do it from a place of love for Prince, but I can't stand it. I've often allowed for music I dislike but can see the skill and musicianship that it holds, giving an odd bonus s star, but I can't be bothered to do that here. It sucks.

This was a bit like Purple Rain in that I thought it was quite patchy and most of it didn't really grab me, but this is stretched over double the length. He also needs hosing down at the end of If I Was Your Girlfriend the horny weirdo.

Four great tracks but the rest is just filler unfortunately. No doubt Prince was incredibly talented but for me, apart from Purple Rain, his albums fall.
Ehh, very okay album. Purple Rain is his masterpiece IMO and these other albums have some good songs, but also a lot of filler for me.

This was not for me. I like plenty of Prince's stuff, (Purple Rain got a 5 from me not long ago) but this album just wasn't good. Worse, it's twice as long as it needs to be. By the end it already felt like it had dragged on too long, and that's before the penultimate track was a whopping 9 minutes long, and the final track 6 1/2. There were maybe 2 good songs, the rest just okay.

Most of the album is awful. The end of the album is the only saving grace. Notable tracks include Sogn O The Times, Strange Relationship, I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man, The Cross, Adore. These songs save it and make it a better listen for me than the previous Prince album I’ve had. So far, Prince is not my thing.

The songs I do enjoy on here end up going 1.5-2 minutes too long of repeated chorus or just jamming, they feel like club mixes with the least danceable music ever. At his best Prince sounds incredibly soulful and fun but some tracks are downright whiny, I especially don't like "If I was your girlfriend" which is super horny and not in a good way. There are some tracks I like though, the title track and Play in the Sunshine are great, the rest of this however doesn't strike a positive chord with me

I just feel like maybe Prince is not for me. But there were a couple of bops on there for sure.

Enten bopper det ikke nok, eller Prince involverer enda et distraherende element. Låta jeg liker best, The Cross, er også den som høres minst ut som resten av skiva. Ikke et godt tegn. Jeg fucker med siste låta også. Jeg trodde jeg likte funk, men jeg gjør kanskje ikke det da. Liker hot buttered soul.

I was looking forward to this because I never really dove into Prince before and I've only heard good things about his musicianship, but it didn't leave me impressed. I'm not sure I agree with the way many of the instruments are used on these songs. Housequake is a really good example of a song that just doesn't make sense. The lyrics seem rushed and the instrumental clashes with itself especially with that strange warbly synth in the background. Fortunately most of the album isn't quite like Housequake but man that song is not good. There are long stretches of songs that just don't need to be there and get quite boring. There is no world where Hot Thing needs to be longer than 2:15. Any of it's catchiness and desire is completely erroded by the needless instrumental repetition. I guess that's how the album got to 80 minutes. I've heard those stories about how Prince would write a song every day for long stretches of time. It's impressive but I think it really shows in a bad way here. So much of this record is severely under-developed. Only a couple of these songs are good. It starts with a filler track and a large majority of the track listing is just more filler. Slow Love is one of few standout actually good song on this record. It was like a breath of fresh air once we got there. It's the first enjoyable track 7 songs in. The music compliments itself and doesn't try too hard. The lyrics feel like he actually tried to make sense of something. I can say the album generally has a decent vibe, it's sure to get people to bob their head. But it absolutely overstays its welcome and doesn't inspire me to ever revisit it. At least it ends with a song that sounds like the last song on the record. Quality resolve at the end of a largely mediocre project. 2.3/5

The drum machine drives me nuts, but his guitar when given a chance is profound. Many of the songs seem to lack a clear direction. But then I never quite figured out the Prince adoration. Did I mention the drum machine drives me nuts?
I went into this fully expecting to vibe with the album but am discovering it is just … not for me. Similar to Queen, I’m realizing I prefer his singles over listening to a full album.
Thought I'd enjoy this but, other than a couple of obvious highlights.... Meh. Comes over as quite self-indulgent, which I guess shouldn't be a surprise. Would've benefited from a producer, I think.
His ninth album. Pop / Funk / Rock. Slick production, sexy lyrics and a funky Pop sound. All the things I expect from a Prince album. However this album still somehow manages to miss for me. By the time Slow Love came on I was bored, and I stayed that way. I thought this album a bit directionless and tired.
This is his best album? I'm starting to think the Prince discography is a joke. I've somehow managed to get all his albums on this list in a very short time-span, and it seems to me that all he talks about is boning - so much so, that I am starting to believe he is a virgin. I cannot imagine somebody who actually has sex writing one billion songs about it. It'd be tripe.

Some songs have a great groove, others are clearly experimental. I can't judge it against it's time as I don't ahve much context, but as an album not to my taste unfortunately.

Favorite tracks: Starfish and Coffee, Play In The Sunshine I really enjoyed the variety of styles on this album, and a lot of the instrumentals were really fun - I dare you to find someone who wouldn't groove to this! That being said, most of the lyrics really ruined this album for me. We get it: you like sex. I don't mean to come off as ~prude~ but it got old before I even finished the first disc. Hot Thing and If I Was Your Girlfriend in particular I couldn't even get through. Also, the cognitive dissonance to make a 2 disc album mostly about having sex with lots of girls, then ending it with "The Cross" is wild to me.

I appreciate the musicianship of Prince but never been a huge fan of his records. This one didn't change my opinion.
Havent listened to a Prince aong in forever. Sign of the times is a bit dated, with the 80s synth rap bits. Play in the sunshine interesting. Builds into a rock out dancy number with a guitar solo that’s straight out of an 80s hair metal band. The drum sounds like a drum machine to me. Odd given Prince is credited as drummer (and everything else). Pretty funny when he sings ‘drummer do your thing’ and then he rips out a guitar riff. Housequake - theres a bit if funk and rythm in there but it just seems a bit lazy, let’s write a dance/rap track. Next song The ballad of dorothy showcases his skills a bit better. Still think there is drum machine used in there. I struggled for time to listen to this double album so the ranking maybe a bit unfair but i wasnt aorry i didnt have the time and that’s a but telling.
How can such a talented artist make such a cheesy, disjointed, and pathetic album? No one can question his skill as a musician, composer, performer, and all around artist, but Damn! This album is just sad.

If there's one thing I learned from this listening journey, it's that I can finally put to rest any notion that I might even possibly like Prince for anything more than When Doves Cry.

Prince IS the 80s. Like seriously, almost every song sounds like the 80s! Drum machine, key-tars & synth galore. Prince is indeeded talented, soulful & oozes sexual energy outta every pore on his tiny sexy body. He sounds like a James Brown soul party at times. I just find everything about Prince to be off-putting. I get his appeal, lyrically he talks about treating women with respect & mutual pleasure. Men want to be him & women want to be with him. I just don't like the sound he Puts out. 2.5

Too much junk for the hits
The 80's slow/simple/repetitive drum synth in most every song has aged poorly and tends to dominate the listening experience given the "thin/sparse" production on most songs. Offbeat synth in "It" and "Starfish & Coffee" also add to this distraction rather than melodic value. Some songs sound like deliberate self caricature - both in vocals (eg: "Housequake") and in lyrics (eg: "If I was your Girlfriend") For a bloke who can famously play 27 instruments, it might have been an idea to bring a few of these to the studio with him other than just that rubbish drum machine.

Här finns riktigt bra låtar (If I was your girlfriend, Sign ’O’ the Times) men också flera bottennapp (Play in sunshine, Hot thing, I could never take the place of you). En enkel-LP hade höjt betyget men nu insisterade Prince på en dubbel (han gav åtminstone med sig från kravet på en trippel). Ur ett albumperspektiv är det också märkligt att slänga in ett live-spår.
For as much as I loved Purple Rain, this album went in the opposite direction. I found it much more bland and mediocre than most of what I know Prince for. He's a great artist and musician, but this album seemed to suppress that. It was easy to tune out, which I thought was surprising given Prince has a penchant for grabbing your attention. It didn't help that the album was 80 minutes long. Even with the length, I actually found the last section of songs to be the most interesting and enjoyable. Unfortunately, getting to them was a slog. Some songs did well with a funky, rock feel. Most of the rest were boring and forgettable. More than a few had a cringy-ness to them from the overly 80s vibes. None of the tracks stood out to me as something great, even the ones I enjoyed. While I never really found the album bad, I didn't care for a lot of it. I'll probably stick with Prince's other works that, in my opinion, are much better. This one was merely OK. Overall: 2.4/5

So disappointed with this, the instrumentation just does not go anywhere in any song and yet the intros make you think "ooooh this is gonna be good" and it just tapers off
Knowing Prince by reputation, I went into this album expecting something good-to-great. Surprised to find it mostly disappointing. None of the songs really made a strong impression and it's about 35 minutes too long. I think maybe it just hasn't aged well. I can kind of see why you'd listen to this and think he might be a good choice for the soundtrack to a campy Batman movie?

Typical(ish) Prince album: couple of absolutely brilliant bangers, a few well crafted interesting listens, a couple of pure Prince filth and a few that sound a bit like Flight of the Conchords

It's my 10 year high school reunion. I walk in the door and immediately see, let's call him Ricky, in the corner by the bar. "OH FUCK YEA!" I think to myself. I hadn't seen or thought about Ricky in years but he was the titts (as we used to say back then). Loved that guy! So funny and one of the best players on the soccer team. Just an all around BRO. I couldn't wait to catch up... But something was different. Maybe he joined a religious cult. Maybe he went off the deep end MAGA. But the guy he used to be just isn't there anymore. We make plans to get together after the reunion but I I know I never will. Best to leave some things in the past. This album feels like Ricky. You can tell it's Prince... no doubt about it. But it's just not that same magic as the Purple Rain era.
So boring and long. One bright spot on disc 1. Disc 2 is overshadowed by how bad 1 is, but even then there's a lot of over staying it's own welcome

Prince has always been one of those artists I only end up listening to because other people like him, and this album didn't change my mind one bit. I'm not going to leave the room if this comes on, but I'd much rather listen to Trout Mask Replica.

This album was a chore and a half. This is far from the king of pop title that I've heard be used about Prince. The vocals were fine, the instruments were fine, but just not great. I was honestly annoyed throughout most of this album
