Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Prince was never the chap for me either in his original form or when he became a hieroglyph. He was not totally a miss as he was undoubtedly a great guitarist. There are better examples of his guitar playing on other albums as this one is rooted very much in 80’s electronica. Sounding now very dated and of its time. 2/5 22/2/26

Its alright, not really my thing tbh. Didnt really intrigue me

Leider macht seine Stimme nicht mehr mit

I've never really been a Prince fan, but this album had some great vibe songs. It also had some stinkers, but not every album is perfect. I think it deserves at least a 5/10

Þessi stjörnugjöf er námunduð upp í tvær. Rosalega erfið til hlustunar fyrir mig 😓

4/10 Top three of my most-overrated artists. I hated this and found myself shouting "ShutUpShutUpSHUUTTTTUPPPPP" as he squealed his disturbing attempts at seduction. The music isn't actually that good - Flight of the Concords have parodied this so well, it is hard not to hear it all as a big joke. I'm sure they do it from a place of love for Prince, but I can't stand it. I've often allowed for music I dislike but can see the skill and musicianship that it holds, giving an odd bonus s star, but I can't be bothered to do that here. It sucks.

Album #42: Sign o’ the Times (Double Album) - Prince Genre (W): R&B, funk, soul, rock, avant-pop Singles: Title track, If I Was Your Girlfriend, U Got the Look, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts: Once again, an album considered one of the best of all time is underwhelming. I don’t understand, maybe I need to just assume every single album I listen to is bad so I can enjoy them. I do love the production and some songs are extremely well-written, so good for Prince! Overall, not my stuff. Favorite songs: Starfish and Coffee, Slow Love, Hot Thing, U Got The Look

Maybe you need to be on massive amounts of coke? Idk

I do appreciate Prince as an artist but I just didn’t get this. Some pretty poor tracks with the odd good one. That’s the best I can say

Not for me.

This was a bit like Purple Rain in that I thought it was quite patchy and most of it didn't really grab me, but this is stretched over double the length. He also needs hosing down at the end of If I Was Your Girlfriend the horny weirdo.

Was a bit lacking of songs I could get into

Not a big fan of the 1st one "Sign O'The Times, way too repetitive and kinda bland and dull. Not a fan of the first three songs. It's getting better with "The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker", it sounds mellow. Oopsie forgot to listen to the rest of it cause it did not hype me up

Four great tracks but the rest is just filler unfortunately. No doubt Prince was incredibly talented but for me, apart from Purple Rain, his albums fall.

Ehh, very okay album. Purple Rain is his masterpiece IMO and these other albums have some good songs, but also a lot of filler for me.

I used to like this better.

What an incredibly mediocre album.

Wasn't expecting to be blown away, but I did think I'd enjoy it more than I did, given how big Prince was, maybe you had to be there?

Honestly, I expected worse...

Not my style. Some songs are creepy

This was not for me. I like plenty of Prince's stuff, (Purple Rain got a 5 from me not long ago) but this album just wasn't good. Worse, it's twice as long as it needs to be. By the end it already felt like it had dragged on too long, and that's before the penultimate track was a whopping 9 minutes long, and the final track 6 1/2. There were maybe 2 good songs, the rest just okay.

ok ig really not in the mood for that kinda music just finished season 4 of obx last night and I'm in denial

Most of the album is awful. The end of the album is the only saving grace. Notable tracks include Sogn O The Times, Strange Relationship, I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man, The Cross, Adore. These songs save it and make it a better listen for me than the previous Prince album I’ve had. So far, Prince is not my thing.

Not my favorite prince songs

The songs I do enjoy on here end up going 1.5-2 minutes too long of repeated chorus or just jamming, they feel like club mixes with the least danceable music ever. At his best Prince sounds incredibly soulful and fun but some tracks are downright whiny, I especially don't like "If I was your girlfriend" which is super horny and not in a good way. There are some tracks I like though, the title track and Play in the Sunshine are great, the rest of this however doesn't strike a positive chord with me

Never understood the hype - still don't

I just feel like maybe Prince is not for me. But there were a couple of bops on there for sure.

Liker hot buttered soul.

I don’t get it. Great guitarist but this just isn’t good to me. Also entirely too long. 2 stars.

I was looking forward to this because I never really dove into Prince before and I've only heard good things about his musicianship, but it didn't leave me impressed. I'm not sure I agree with the way many of the instruments are used on these songs. Housequake is a really good example of a song that just doesn't make sense. The lyrics seem rushed and the instrumental clashes with itself especially with that strange warbly synth in the background. Fortunately most of the album isn't quite like Housequake but man that song is not good. There are long stretches of songs that just don't need to be there and get quite boring. There is no world where Hot Thing needs to be longer than 2:15. Any of it's catchiness and desire is completely erroded by the needless instrumental repetition. I guess that's how the album got to 80 minutes. I've heard those stories about how Prince would write a song every day for long stretches of time. It's impressive but I think it really shows in a bad way here. So much of this record is severely under-developed. Only a couple of these songs are good. It starts with a filler track and a large majority of the track listing is just more filler. Slow Love is one of few standout actually good song on this record. It was like a breath of fresh air once we got there. It's the first enjoyable track 7 songs in. The music compliments itself and doesn't try too hard. The lyrics feel like he actually tried to make sense of something. I can say the album generally has a decent vibe, it's sure to get people to bob their head. But it absolutely overstays its welcome and doesn't inspire me to ever revisit it. At least it ends with a song that sounds like the last song on the record. Quality resolve at the end of a largely mediocre project. 2.3/5

I'm not into it

Funky but forgettable

Personally never been a fan of Prince. Understand the appeal but vocals and song writing have never delivered for me.

not a prince fan lol

The drum machine drives me nuts, but his guitar when given a chance is profound. Many of the songs seem to lack a clear direction. But then I never quite figured out the Prince adoration. Did I mention the drum machine drives me nuts?

I went into this fully expecting to vibe with the album but am discovering it is just … not for me. Similar to Queen, I’m realizing I prefer his singles over listening to a full album.

Thought I'd enjoy this but, other than a couple of obvious highlights.... Meh. Comes over as quite self-indulgent, which I guess shouldn't be a surprise. Would've benefited from a producer, I think.

His ninth album. Pop / Funk / Rock. Slick production, sexy lyrics and a funky Pop sound. All the things I expect from a Prince album. However this album still somehow manages to miss for me. By the time Slow Love came on I was bored, and I stayed that way. I thought this album a bit directionless and tired.

This is his best album? I'm starting to think the Prince discography is a joke. I've somehow managed to get all his albums on this list in a very short time-span, and it seems to me that all he talks about is boning - so much so, that I am starting to believe he is a virgin. I cannot imagine somebody who actually has sex writing one billion songs about it. It'd be tripe.

Honestly, I was bored through most of this. I'm not into those 80s synth beats and sounds. This is background music at best.

Never been a Prince fan. Listening to this (again) did not change this fact

2. Not a fan.

Hey, at least it's not a triple album. 2/5

In my humble opinion, it is nothing special: just the usual Prince stuff

Some songs have a great groove, others are clearly experimental. I can't judge it against it's time as I don't ahve much context, but as an album not to my taste unfortunately.

I'm disappointed. I thought I would like this album more, but it really did nothing for me. Hopefully Purple Rain will be better. 2/5

Like the title track. Melted away into abstract nothingness after that...

boring

This album took me 5 days to finish. I must be listening to a different album than yall. This thing is bloated, and boring, and completely lacking any cohesion, except Prince’s trademark horniness. Do not want. TWO STARS

He de decir que ni fu ni fa

I appreciate the musicianship of Prince but never been a huge fan of his records. This one didn't change my opinion.

Havent listened to a Prince aong in forever. Sign of the times is a bit dated, with the 80s synth rap bits. Play in the sunshine interesting. Builds into a rock out dancy number with a guitar solo that’s straight out of an 80s hair metal band. The drum sounds like a drum machine to me. Odd given Prince is credited as drummer (and everything else). Pretty funny when he sings ‘drummer do your thing’ and then he rips out a guitar riff. Housequake - theres a bit if funk and rythm in there but it just seems a bit lazy, let’s write a dance/rap track. Next song The ballad of dorothy showcases his skills a bit better. Still think there is drum machine used in there. I struggled for time to listen to this double album so the ranking maybe a bit unfair but i wasnt aorry i didnt have the time and that’s a but telling.

How can such a talented artists make such a cheesy, disjointed, and pathetic album? No one can question his skill as a musician, composer, performer, and all around artist, but Damn!, this album is just sad.

So long, so boring...

I thought it was gunna be a harry styles moment with sign of the times. Guess not. It was okay. Wouldn’t choose it but i understand why someone would.

Prince was certainly prolific. And horny. Nothing on here really stood out.

Better than I thought it was going to be, but still not a Prince fan.

Not for me. Think of Bruno Mars in silksonic (like the lyrics). And think of it made in the 70s or 80s. I’m neither a fan of Bruno Mars nor of lyrics like these so I don’t care much for this album. I only got till “If I was your girlfriend”

If there's one thing I learned from this listening journey, it's that I can finally put to rest any notion that I might even possibly like Prince for anything more than When Doves Cry.

it's fine. not my style

Prince IS the 80s. Like seriously, almost every song sounds like the 80s! Drum machine, key-tars & synth galore. Prince is indeeded talented, soulful & oozes sexual energy outta every pore on his tiny sexy body. He sounds like a James Brown soul party at times. I just find everything about Prince to be off-putting. I get his appeal, lyrically he talks about treating women with respect & mutual pleasure. Men want to be him & women want to be with him. I just don't like the sound he Puts out. 2.5

Great guitarrist, but a lot of boring tracks on this one. Expected *much* more out of it to be honest.

The title track rules I loved this album in my youth

Too much junk for the hits

The 80's slow/simple/repetitive drum synth in most every song has aged poorly and tends to dominate the listening experience given the "thin/sparse" production on most songs. Offbeat synth in "It" and "Starfish & Coffee" also add to this distraction rather than melodic value. Some songs sound like deliberate self caricature - both in vocals (eg: "Housequake") and in lyrics (eg: "If I was your Girlfriend") For a bloke who can famously play 27 instruments, it might have been an idea to bring a few of these to the studio with him other than just that rubbish drum machine.

not a big prince fan. can't see what the fuss is all about with him.

It is too mechanical for me, lacks any soul. There are a couple decent tracks but mostly forgettable. I prefer his earlier rawer work.

I guess this is my music hot take. Prince is overrated. He does nothing for me.

Här finns riktigt bra låtar (If I was your girlfriend, Sign ’O’ the Times) men också flera bottennapp (Play in sunshine, Hot thing, I could never take the place of you).

For as much as I loved Purple Rain, this album went in the opposite direction. I found it much more bland and mediocre than most of what I know Prince for. He's a great artist and musician, but this album seemed to suppress that. It was easy to tune out, which I thought was surprising given Prince has a penchant for grabbing your attention. It didn't help that the album was 80 minutes long. Even with the length, I actually found the last section of songs to be the most interesting and enjoyable. Unfortunately, getting to them was a slog. Some songs did well with a funky, rock feel. Most of the rest were boring and forgettable. More than a few had a cringy-ness to them from the overly 80s vibes. None of the tracks stood out to me as something great, even the ones I enjoyed. While I never really found the album bad, I didn't care for a lot of it. I'll probably stick with Prince's other works that, in my opinion, are much better. This one was merely OK. Overall: 2.4/5

I was shockingly bored by this album. Kind of surprising since I really like Purple Rain

So disappointed with this, the instrumentation just does not go anywhere in any song and yet the intros make you think "ooooh this is gonna be good" and it just tapers off

Knowing Prince by reputation, I went into this album expecting something good-to-great. Surprised to find it mostly disappointing. None of the songs really made a strong impression and it's about 35 minutes too long. I think maybe it just hasn't aged well. I can kind of see why you'd listen to this and think he might be a good choice for the soundtrack to a campy Batman movie?

Better than I expected, although there were a few songs that were a definite nope for me. Overall, I can't say the album turned me into a Prince fan, but I can understand better why he is popular.

Typical(ish) Prince album: couple of absolutely brilliant bangers, a few well crafted interesting listens, a couple of pure Prince filth and a few that sound a bit like Flight of the Conchords

Bof hein

It was a chore to get through.

Feels dated

Albüm fena değildi. Bu benim 1001albums te ilk günüm ve çok random bir albüm. hoşuma giden parçalar şunlardı; sign o times hoştu it güzel bir parça slow love if i was your girlfriend its gonna be a beautiful night (live) çok az dinlenmiş fakat çok güzel. neden dinlemediniz :((( ve son olarak adore. adore'u dinlemeden önce bütün albümü sırasıyla bitirdim ve adore'a sıra gelirken okul yolunu bitirdim ve kulaklığımı çıkardım. okuldan çıkarken, evet bakalım adore nasılmış diye heyecanla şarkıyı başlattım. pişman olmadım. 2dk geçmeden edit: starfish and coffe'yi eklemeyi unuttum. Prince'ın tangerine demesi çok hoşuma gidiyor nedense.

It's my 10 year high school reunion. I walk in the door and immediately see, let's call him Ricky, in the corner by the bar. "OH FUCK YEA!" I think to myself. I hadn't seen or thought about Ricky in years but he was the titts (as we used to say back then). Loved that guy! So funny and one of the best players on the soccer team. Just an all around BRO. I couldn't wait to catch up... But something was different. Maybe he joined a religious cult. Maybe he went off the deep end MAGA. But the guy he used to be just isn't there anymore. We make plans to get together after the reunion but I I know I never will. Best to leave some things in the past. This album feels like Ricky. You can tell it's Prince... no doubt about it. But it's just not that same magic as the Purple Rain era.

So boring and long. One bright spot on disc 1. Disc 2 is overshadowed by how bad 1 is, but even then there's a lot of over staying it's own welcome

I mean it is Prince, but god I don't really like Prince outside of Purple Rain…

Prince has always been one of those artists I only end up listening to because other people like him, and this album didn't change my mind one bit. I'm not going to leave the room if this comes on, but I'd much rather listen to Trout Mask Replica.

not a big fan of prince.. i only like the purple rain album, and this not purple rain

A couple of songs were amazing. The rest were lousy. The album is too long. I don't remember everything because it was so long.

This album was a chore and a half. This is far from the king of pop title that I've heard be used about Prince. The vocals were fine, the instruments were fine, but just not great. I was honestly annoyed throughout most of this album

Top track: I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man

Some songs are groovy, he definitely is talented and has charisma. 80s aesthetic and overtly sexual and sometimes respective/shallow lyrics don’t really do it for me

I was excited to listen to this because I’ve mentally held Prince in high regard, but it just falls flat somehow. Doesn’t even quite meld well into the background. Hoping the next Prince album to come up does me better bc I want to love him, I doooo.

top 3: - slow love - strange relationship - I could never take the place of your man

Vamos lá, a produção do álbum é terrível. 2.5/5

lowmid

ive had it up to here with this dude

Man I really want to like it and I do like Prince but its so mixed and I cant even listen to it in one go.

Still over rated

Very long! And all very similar. Couple of redeeming features towards the end when I had all but give up hope.

Pretty poor and so dated. I struggled to get into this and in general found it a self indulgent mess, but it really picked up with some more rocky songs near the end.

I like Prince. I do not like this album. Awful.

Man this album really just keeeeeeps goooooooing doesn't it... Production is bizarrely stripped down on a ton of the songs on this project. It's like Prince wanted to strictly abide by the "sounds of the future" and left tracks with just an 808 and electronic clap with a wonky synthesizer? But you hear the same sounds over and over and over.. If I'm being honest, I was disappointed by the mediocrity I encountered on this record.

Ahh the 80s, when everyone chased this man's prolific output. Overlong by 40 minutes, boring 80s drum machines, way overproduced tuneless pieces about havin sex with everyone walking around, danny elfman-level sound effects and silliness "I could never take the place of your man" is nice, but it also appears to have actual instruments, so it's a misplacement on the album. His music videos are great, high-energy cast of millions affairs, but they significantly improve on what's in the music.

Naw thanks

I know Prince is one of the geniuses of all musical geniuses, but there were honestly parts of this album I wondered if it was still his album. Not a huge fan of this one but RIP to one of the greatest ever.

Too sexy!

Hasn’t beard this album before and it’s okay.

So very 80s. If I could be your girlfriend and I could Never Take The Place of Your Man are my favs from this.

Starting to think 1999 was Prince’s best work. Slow Love and Adore were good tunes, but I didnt connect with much else. 2.5 stars

I can sorta get why people like it, but not my cup of tes

Ei ole minu maitsele. Üks lugu oli hea.

Was prince a good musician, yes he was. Just see some of his guitar performances. In saying that this album is so stuck in the 80’s I was expecting an appearance from Reagan. The synths and drum machines date this album so much and not in the fun way and it’s such a chore to listen to. There was a sporadic good song here and there but it’s surrounded by so much filler, the fact that this is album goes for an hour is so baffling and no one had the grace to tell prince that he should maybe cut some of the weaker tracks, then I see this is also his other most appreciated album which also perplexes me.

Relativ langweiliges Album.

I’ve always liked the Prince persona more than his actual music, and this album only confirms that view. It’s not a bad album per se (although not as good as Purple Rain in my opinion), but it’s definitely not my kind of music. While I’m sort of impressed that he managed to make an entire double album with little more than a drum machine and a synthesizer, I found the overall production terribly dated. Not only does it sound awfully 80s, it sounds like early 80s, with all the worst gimmicks of that time period. I find the constant claps and breaks painful to listen. I’ll admit there’s a wide variety of styles involved, Prince is clearly at ease with almost any genre. However, too many of these genres are of the kind I dislike – like Rn’B, my personal Nemesis. The only redeeming grace of this album is Prince’s voice, which is as warm and sexy as ever. I’ll give it a 2* for effort and objective talent, but I honestly took very little pleasure in listening.

I never understood why Prince's music was so appreciated and acclaimed. I listened to this album and, yes, when it came out it must have been very innovative, but I didn't like it. It's not bad, it's just not my style

Didn’t age well.

I'm convinced that "Prince was sexy" is some kind of psyop, just listen to "If I was your girlfriend" and and try not to cringe.

Prince was very prolific. Maybe a shorter album(s) would be more memorable

I just don't get it I think the childlike voice is the most grating

This has got to be an all-time "Oh no, this genius has too much money and is too famous and the quality of his music is about to go straight off a cliff" album. Love the little purple guy but this is much worse than I remembered.

Not one of his best. Some fair songs, but lacked the luster, and vibrant sound most are used to

I’ve heard Prince’s better stuff and this isn’t it.

Not even finished the second track and already bored. Tracks would maybe have been alright at half the lenght but too long and too repetitive. Just finished Starfish and Coffee and I am getting annoyed. There is clearly talent and originality here but it is all so unfocused and all the tracks fo far just drag on and on. Even the short Starfish and Coffee managed to outstay it's welcome. On Hot Thing now and I just had to look just how long this track is and was surprised it is only 5:38. When I looked it felt like I had been listening to it for much longer than that, at least 8 minutes or more. Well made it to the end and am pretty annoyed. There clearly is talent and originality here but it all get's lost in songs that drag on and on. And they're not really that long but somehow too long. And the wasted talent just annoys me terribly. This could have been a great album and it just isn't. And for that reason I really dislike this just like Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life. Such a waste.

it was an album. i feel like i'm missing something here. don't need dull instrumentals to pad out the time on already boring and repetative songs.

Sign O the times, the title track, was more than I expected - good for prince for being edgy. Housequake was a fever dream. So was Starfish and Coffee, but I kinda dig that one. Forever in my life was a nice, normal prince song that I enjoyed. I don’t know what he was trying to do with this album honestly. Glad I listened to it - but please don’t make me do that again

It all sounds like Prince, but nothing particularly compelling. I feel like maybe this was big for its time and this is a good snapshot of that 80's sound that was well regarded at the time, but did not have the longevity that Purple Rain has. It's not bad for background music but not something I am going to listen to intently.

Underwhelming. That’s probably the best word I could use to describe this album. This was my first Prince album so I had high expectations going in and although there is things to like, I was left feeling pretty disappointed Some of the instrumentals were creative, the vocals were great, and the entire album sounded really good (especially the drums), but the overall execution fell flat For as long of an album as this is (16 tracks), there wasn’t any song in particular I thought stood out as being great and a few that I thought started out good left me wanting me by the time they finished I’m still excited to hear the rest of Prince’s discography (especially Purple Rain), but my expectations have been lowered a bit Favorites: None Honorable Mentions: Housequake

Prince is a good singer and a good guitarist, but this just didn't sing to me.

Prince was undoudbtedly a highly talented singer, instrumentalist and stylist, but the songwriting in this album is mediocre, using predictable and overused patterns. There are moments of interest, typically in background instruments suddenly doing something brilliant, but all in all it's a very long bore.

I listened to this while doing work, and I found myself thinking "oh wait is it over already?" at the end because nothing really stood out to me while listening to it. This isn't *totally* a bad thing or the album's fault, because while it was up against a fierce foe (vyvanse 40 mg), so it didn't have any sounds that made me want to turn it off completely... ..I just realized how sad and boring that makes it sound after writing that, but I can't really find it in my mind to dispute it. Whomp whomp.

Not my favourite prince album. Some songs were good, but I found most of them to beyond my taste in music. This dude really loves sex though damn.

Lowkey kinda soulless, I thought he was just popular cause he’s gay turns out he’s not even gay

It's a two-hour long mishmash of ideas that don't always work. Couple of bangers, but Prince's voice becomes too squeaky for me after 90 minutes.

disc 1 - meh disc 2 - meh not doin it for me but not awful

"I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" and "You've Got The Look" are pretty good but overall I'm not excited about this album beyond a 2 for me. I do enjoy the earlier popular radio play songs that Prince did earlier than this work.

I think this is the worst Prince album but it's still on this list, showing the sexual prowess of Prince in his prime

I wanted to like this more. Undeniably talented. I just wish he started recording 20 years later and we could have escaped the sheer 80s-ness. I don't like it, I don't want to hear it again

"I took another bubble bath with my pants on".... another?!

i was intimidated by the length of this album and while i wouldn't say this was an excruciating listen, it sounded like prince threw everything at you to see what sticks and nothing about this album sticks with me unfortunately

I'm genuinely confused as to why Prince is so well regarded because I'm not a fan of this. I guess it was a Sign 'O' the Times... Seriously though, I was about to dismiss this album as entirely forgettable until we got to I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, the Cross, and It’s Going to Be a Beautiful Night. The latter of which was my favourite track on the album and stood out well above the rest.

Holy fuck, YouTube Music wasn’t lying when they said I was looking at the Super Deluxe album. Aside from the 50th Anniversary Beatles reissues, I can’t think of a longer body of music to come from a mainstream artist. Anyways, let’s have a lookie at the actual length of this thing. Fuck me. This cheeky Prince bastard just had to close out his inclusions with another double album. Oh well. Could be worse, though I’m pretty sure this is the first hour-twenner album to dawn upon the list. To echo my endlessly autistic ramblings about album length, 48 minutes is the scientifically deduced perfect length for an album. Albums longer than an hour take serious hits to their quality to reach that length and there is only one hour-tenner album that I consider to be good. The odds are heavily, heavily stacked against this thing being good, though I’ll give it a fair go, nonetheless. A weak and bleak send off to the Prince album lineage. There’s very little going on in this album and the songs are stretched out into infinity. Prince’s vocals are characteristically 80s, though I don’t think his approach works for me. The pitch is all wonky. Anyways, the title track is a respectable opener. I like the funky bass. The succeeding track, Play in the Sunshine, is a good follow-up. I quite like the instrumental, especially the bass guitar and the xylophone that appears near the end of the song. Starfish and Coffee is a nice track. If I Was Your Girlfriend is hilariously gay and uncomfortable for a song that I assume was meant to be sensual. The first half of ICNTTPOYM is solid, though the second half of absolute nothingness admittedly took me out of the track. I’m checking the book. The song “It” sucks, which is a funny thing to preface your review with. Released when Prince’s success was waning. Was intended to be a triple album. Stylistically diverse. Pushed the boundaries of music. Eh. Hmm. This album was much more successful than the list lets on and there’s an incredible amount of creative energy that went into making this album, but I think it could do with a snub. I get the impression that Prince is more of a singles act than an album act, which is a bad repertoire to bring to an album fight. In place of this album, I humbly submit Electro-Shock Blues by Eels for consideration on the list.

Pretty mid. I had higher expectations for Prince.

There's no real standout tracks on here. I also personally find something very bland about the drums on a lot of the tracks. I'm surprised by the general popularity of these Prince albums given some of the almost lethal cringe I get from the lyrics. I feel like there's always self prescribed music nerd waiting in the wings to tell me trivia about why Prince was a genius and they could be right but I don't enjoy listening to this.

a minnesotan and celebrity witness. as an album experience, all over the place. however, it felt natural for the songs to be as long as they were, and there were many colorful, whimsical, and interesting sonic and lyrical moments. there were also many off the wall, confusing and bizarre ones as well. mixing sometimes felt botched. as a back to back experience this was not so fulfilling for me, but individual songs and moments were fruitful. best tunes: sign o' the times, it, slow love, hot thing, adore + random interesting moments throughout

"I took another bubble bath with my pants on".... another?!

Oof, I know Prince is pretty wildly adored, but his music has never been my cup of tea. Also, this was way too long.

I really want to love Prince but his music just doesn’t do it for me. I like some of his hits but not his everyday stuff.

Sehr hit or miss, 1&2 gut 3-5 naja, 7 gut ~2/5 Gute Songs 3-4/5, schlechte 1-2/5, 50-60% schlecht Texte teilw naja

Overall a nice album, but nothing memorable that jumped out to me.

The first song is kind of cool. The rest is not for me

In addition to being too long, this was just not a good album. Prince has some good songs, but this is the second album I’ve gotten by him that makes me think the majority just are not.

Not my thing

Still don't get him. He must be good but I just here Shakin' Jacko

This was weird prince.

I’m sure there are parts that are good but I only made it through 6 songs

Like did it really need to be 80 minutes? I didn’t particularly like the music and the length just made it worse. 2 stars

I can see why people like this, it's good pop music. I found this a difficult album to finish because it's so long and not at all to my taste. I think the overuse of the drum machine and synths just gave every track a monotonous, repetitive feeling where the music held no interest. Prince puts in a great vocal performance but I find the music too boring to appreciate it. Quite like 'Cross' towards the end of the album and 'Adore' has some great moments but goes on too long (much like the album and probably this review...).

If you just handed me this album and I didn’t know it was prince, I would have hated it.

Prince is great guitar player, and that's about all I have to say about him. This is synth crap.

The genius of Prince seems unaccessible for me. Besides the best know title-track simply not my cup of tea. And I rate it further down one star just because of its length. 1,5

Two godly Songs and some „oldschool“ funk rock. Really long songs. Fav: Sign o the times

I’m sorry I just really don’t like this!!!

No me dijo nada

Super bland and boring. Typical pop. Not exciting not influential, didnt reallylike it. Like the queen album i just reviewed, there were good maybe even great fragments but not total songs i wouldnt say. it alwsodragged on for a brutal 76 minutes.

Never really got into Prince. Giving it a shot. Not a fan of the extreme use of all 80's sounds. Halfway through the 1st disc I started to get bored and wantes to check reviews, cause clearly this can't be a good album!? Pitchfork forking out a 10 for this? Why? This is boring as shit. I will listen through the whole thing, but man, this will be tedious. I'm finally done. My initial view didn't change. Prince is overrated

I'm relieved the label convinced Prince to not make this a triple album. Its charms, and clear popular / critical appeal, is lost on me. There are sparks of smart pop writing on display, but it wanders around a lot, the songs are extremely long, not particularly to the point and is missing the flare and hooks that I'm after.

meh rock

Neither good nor bad. Didn't really move me

Prince has some awesome albums. This isn’t one of then

Prince was very talented - but its just not my thing at all. This overstayed its welcome

Not the album for me. Its no 1999.

Nimi biisi loistava. Sitten menee fiilistelyksi joka ei iske.

zwei bis drei

Not for me. Too synthy beats that makes it feel old and not in a good way. 2 star? Almost first 1 star

A few good songs but too many weak drum machine and synth tracks to be considered great.

I really wanted to like this. The singles on here are great: Sign o the times, Starfish and coffee, If I was your girlfriend are all excellent songs. Everything else kinda sounds easy-to-forget/all the same.

Obviously a good artist but not my cup of tea

I know people love and revere Prince, but I am still not one of those people.

*whispers quietly* I don't understand the admiration for Prince & his music, because frankly, it is ass; it is very not good. I am not going to pretend like I enjoyed any minute of this album. That being said, no one has ever had as much swagger as Prince did. And for that, he gets an extra star Best Song: Sign 'o The Times Rating: 3/10 (Irritating) Stars: 2/5

Oof. This was a long listen. Wish I could say it was pleasant but unfortunately it wasnt 2 ⭐️

2.5 - it was alright. A little let down. It had some cool songs but it didn’t feel that special

People like this?

Not my style...

I acknowledge that people feel that Prince is a musical genius / prodigy and I concede that he is without a doubt an amazing guitarist! He may also have some great party / dance tunes. However, none of his music has ever made me “feel” anything.

I don't ike this song because of the beat. I would not recommend this song. I don't like this song because it is not my type. I would not recommend this song

I don't really like this album because I don't like how the instruments sound and how heavy they are, and I don't like what the lyrics mean. I would not recommend this album to someone else because I feel like they wouldn't like music like this since it's very different to other popular music nowadays. I would give this 2 stars out of 5.

If you like old music then you would like this album. The only thing I really like about the song "If I was your girlfriend" Because of the lyrics and the instruments in the background and also his voice. I don't really like this album because I don't like all of the songs on here. I wouldn't recommend this album because I don't like really any of the songs.

I loathe prince, even more so since this thing has thrown me 3 of his crap albums. Same shite but at least he was consistent.

Poor for prince

This album is superbly overrated, the best moments on this is Prince attempting rip off David Bowie, the rest of it is total cheese.

I’m sure for most people there’s at least one well respected musician that they just don’t get. For me that is Prince. I could not stand this album. His production always sounds cheesy to me, and his voice is annoying.

Expected alot from this artist, but sadly this album didn't deliver. Nothing in particular stood out, which means it wasn't good nor bad. Hopefully theres another prince album that'll meet the expectations that have been set by word of mouth.

Prince normally isn't normally my thing so this was a little much for how long this album was. Would not listen again

Meh, it was okay. Way too long of an album for what it was. Won't relisten

This album is definitely very "Prince-like", but I think it might have gone a little bit overboard with this style. It was too much for me, I enjoyed few songs, but felt assaulted by the music, the continuous beat over 5 minutes songs, lack of tempo changes, just same style over and over again. I wouldn't mind listening to some of the songs in a vacuum, but whole album was just unbearable. A bit waste of time.

It all sounds the same. The songs are very long, and the instrumentals stay constant throughout; they are not very dynamic. His voice is cool and the instruments are interesting, but for the first few moments. This would be fine background music for school work or a social event; it's inoffensive. I like starfish and coffee, it is goofy. These songs are not bad, just slow and maybe for dancing or cooking. It strikes me as an album to be listened to with someone else in the room. Ok, Disc 2 has more interesting tracks. At least, they are louder and more dynamic.

I'm not sure that we needed three Prince albums.

I must that didn't impress me much. Maybe I need more time to proper digest this.

it's just what i'd expected from a prince album.

Wonderful another double album and another artist I truly want to like but just can’t get into it. Respect to the great and powerful Prince, he fusion so many styles of music together on Sign O’ The Times but none of them are my style. 4.4/10

I was not moved until "U Got The Look." This album did not move me.

Kind of a slog

I thought I enjoyed Prince but maybe not. This is the kind of generic music they would play in a hotel lounge that is trying to have a vibe.

80s synth gitaar funk, meh

Some albums are made on alcohol some on psychedelics—this one sounds like it was made entirely on Viagra. Sign "O" the Times is Prince in full, unfiltered, permanently-horny overdrive, stretching a single album’s worth of ideas into a two-LP marathon of funk, falsetto, and feverish lust. From start to finish, it’s like he’s trying to seduce the listener, the microphone, and possibly the entire world, and Im just not interested, it gets exhausting when he just won’t quit. Like someone pestering you in a nightclub when all you want to do is have a dance. There are some nicer moments. “The Cross” is a banger of a tune, “Housequake” is just silly fun. But then there’s way too much filler, a lot of meandering, and If I Was Your Girlfriend, isn’t just weird, it’s creepy. It’s Prince at his most obsessive, whispering and crooning in a way that feels less like seduction and more like he’s watching you through the blinds. The album is overflowing with ideas, but it’s like he refused to edit anything. There’s a great single album buried in here, but as a double LP, Sign "O" the Times is a test of endurance. It’s like Prince was so in love with every idea that he refused to cut anything, and the result is something that feels less like a masterpiece and more like an overexcited teenager showing you all his unfinished demos. Iconic? I guess in a way. A great listen? Not really. Compared to Purple Rain it's just not in the same league.

Not my favorite. Still good though

A bit of a letdown from Prince. Not one memorable song on a double album is wild.

This did nothing for me

There still are better Prince albums. This wasn't that good.

As usual with Prince, I just don’t understand the fanaticism

80s garbage, Prince has done better

Average instrumentals, average vocals, goofy alter ego (made me laugh I guess) quite a lot of awkward moments. Favourite songs: the first one from each disk. Overall around 4/10

Roughly as annoying as any other Prince album

I don't get it.

I don't like prince

Wasn’t terrible but I didn’t love it either

Good beats, but not my vibe

It's ok

I didn't like this at all. Play In The Sunshine sounded awful, like it was recorded in a suitcase. The obnoxious squealing in Hot Thing was completely unneccesary. I just can't do Prince.

Nicht meins, würde ich nicht nochmal durchhören.

I certainly don’t believe the hype. I didn’t before and don’t know because his voice just starts to get annoying just like Costanza in Seinfeld saying Costanza to a possible girlfriend and then said girlfriend is like I can’t get that name out of my head. Also you don’t need a bunch of long songs

Just painful. It started off okay but I've learned that Prince only made good singles, never great albums. All his albums that we've had so far (which are supposedly his best) have been either okay or hot trash. This was no different. First off, it's an hour and 20 minutes. No album should be that long. Secondly, the first couple songs start off okay, decent even, and then fall off a cliff. It's just a bunch of whatever nonsense lyrics or just Prince doing his squeaky falsetto over and over and over and over again. Also the "drums" actively annoyed me. Dude is still super horny and manages to have about half the album be about his sex drive. I don't understand how this fool got so famous.

uuuuuugggghhhh. way too long, too much falsetto, overly synthesized, and all sounds the same. after the 1st 2 tracks, I was done

I want to like this a lot more than I did. It's so..inconsistent. Just when I feel like an idea is about to flourish into a cool track it lets me down and falls flat. Not everything is mediocre here but so much of it is. Still, I respect the weirdness this album brings.

First side is really mediocre. No hooks. Side two is marked improvement but not really enough to save the whole endeavor. I’d like to round up to three stars out of respect for Prince but the album really doesn’t deserve it. Prince is an interesting artist in that he has SO MANY crazy-great songs but man alive so much more middling crap.

I just don’t get the fuss about the dirty little puppy that was Prince. Everything is just so overlong, and so much is repetitive and never really goes anywhere, and it just bores the wrinkly tits off me. The one high point was the somewhat-out-of-left-field rocker The Cross, which has an incredible drum sound, but even then I was getting bored. It just does not tickle my pickle.

Didn't love this. Don't really get the Hype about it

i dont care for it but a couple were ok

I've never been a big fan however I can tolerate his music in small doses.

Sounds like something you'd hear in a bar and wouldn't care about or remember the moment you left.

No songs really stood out for me and the only good tracks were play in the sunshine you got the look and if i was your girlfriend 2/5

Wanted to like it more but didn’t really stick with me. Not terrible tho.

Not one of the purple ones best - mediocre

I didn't expect a weird electronic album. I was getting a little bored listening to it and kept finding out there were more songs. This isn't for me.

I just find Prince's style boring and mostly unchanging. There were interesting moments of instrumental mixing but not enough to save the whole album

This all felt a bit bland and repetitive, I think it stems from the drum machine, seems like the same beat all the way through each track with no variation

It's taken me so many attempts to listen through this album, but I've finally attempted it while I'm in the right mood to at least get through it. There's a really broad variety of stuff on there, and I quite enjoyed some of the funkier ones (Housequake) and the last few, including the rocky one, but I still think Prince just isn't for me. I found the poppier tracks left me completely cold.

I don’t remember much of this album when it came out, maybe since it was overshadowed by Purple Rain and 1999. After listening to this, I feel Prince wrote better songs for other artists at the time. Other than a couple of songs, unsure I’d give this whole album another listen.

Rollo patatero

Prince was an insanely talented musician and had soul for days. But his songwriting was very hit or miss. I couldn't get myself into this album and found the album fading into the background and not engaging at all.

Was good at first, but too much

Title track aside nothing on this really stood out and for a double album that's a lot of hard listening. Very disjointed, very over indulgent...

Didn't enjoy this one. 2/5

Not sure why Prince was so popular. This was all just mediocre at best to me

I keep trying, I just can't get that much out of Prince, maybe he was a musical genius. Even though he inspired many other musicians I like, I can't get on with him. And it's the same with this album. Maybe it's great, but I don't feel that way. I probably won't listen to it again. 2/5

Creative, but not that good...

Waited for the opening song to get going and kick into another gear for 5 mins but it never came. And that was the case for a lot of songs on this album. Pretty boring and repetitive and just waiting for something good to happen. The opener had the most plays on Spotify so thought it would be the best (or close to) but it wasn't anywhere near. Play In The Sunshine was next and was immediately a better song. Side 2 is much better. The Cross and Adore are so very easily the best songs as they have the best vocal performances of the album. The Cross also builds to something pretty damn good, almost heavy metal. Overall it's just a bit wanky for my liking. Which I maybe could have guessed if I were to prejudge what I thought Prince would be like. Really not my thing at all. Half of the tunes sound like they would be okay for background music in an 80s industrial club or something, but to actually listen to, not good. Really like Prince's voice though. The non industrial sounding songs are much better, otherwise it sounds like I am listening to a bad radio station on GTA Vice City.

I just can’t get into Prince, this was fine. 2.5

Added 6 tracks to the 1001 Experience Playlist and that number shocks me, it felt like 30 minutes in between good songs. Prince has some all time bangers but his mid & late career isn't my favorite.

Didn't like it. Very 80s R&B

Wow prince is weird

Only 3 or 4 good songs. When LP artwork was great

This is the best 80s-dance, synth-psych, neo-funk, crypto-soul, agit-pop album I've ever heard. Too bad I don't like any of those things. Ok, I take it back synth-psych sounds like it could be good.

I enjoy Prince -- but apparently not as much as the next guy because this is never making my top-100 album list like Apple Music. And 2 lp definitely stretches my interest level

Ah, Prince, gifted, so capable, such a beacon and groundbreaking artist, yet he is so uninteresting to me. I try. I do try. I'm just not moved. So, moving on with a 2 star rating.

It's alright, none of the songs really felt captivating enough to listen more than once

Sign of the Times was a great start to the album. After that I quickly lost interest. Stopped halfway - was far from being unlistenable, but was just very meh.

probably 2.50 but it feels needlessly long could i write poetry to this? n

Way too long! Way too much synthesiser! 2.5 stars. Sorry.

Meh, not really for me

RnB, 1987 -> 2

Really boring, can’t be his best surely?

I am sad to say that I don't think this music is timeless. Didn't really enjoy, I'd rather listen to anything else.

Kind of a snoozefest :/ Sorry Prince (RIP), but not his best work. Fine and serviceable.

2 Stars (5/15)
