Reviews (page 4 of 14)
Great stuff throughout, fascinating to know what they became but you could sense how tight they were as a band
i love early beatles
legalzinho
Beatles - but make it less fun! You can tell there is greatness here, but it still will take some time for it to materialize Best Song: You Really Got a Hold on Me Rating: 7.5/10 Stars: 4
Another physical listen, and The Beatles are even more great in that fashion. While I would rank With The Beatles in the lower tier of their discography, this album rips. Money, Roll Over Beethoven, and Please Mr. Postman are three of the bands best covers, and you get gems like All My Loving and opener It Won’t Be Long.
It’s so interesting hearing this after hearing two of their other major albums (White Album & Abbey Road) and how different the sound is. This felt more like cabana/beach music than the others. If I ever need to feel like I’m at a tiki bar on the beach, this is one of the albums I’d want to hear.
There were birds in the sky but I never sawr them winging. No I never sawrrr them at all. Some solid covers but not a Beatles album I find myself reaching for.
Not revolutionary, but I really like the mop top era Beatles and Mr Postman alone makes it worth the price of admission
No hay mucho para decir sobre los Beatles, joyita
i've only really listened to the concept albums, so hearing this straight boy band music is hilarious. some bangers tho Would I listen again: why not Deserves to be on this list: absolutely 3.6
Childhood classics ❤︎ I’m a bit biased but I really did like this record. You can hear the imperfections, sure, but I think the hodgepodge nature of the Beatles’ earlier work is what makes it so charming. Can feel a little musically repetitive at times, but the melodies are catchy enough that I don’t find myself bored really ever. I didn’t care for some of the covers, and it’s not my favorite album of theirs, but a solid, career-defining entry of their catalogue. Four stars! STAND-OUT SONG: “It Won’t Be Long” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Hold Me Tight”, “I Wanna Be Your Man”, “Money (That’s What I Want)”
this is a great beatles album that I forget about a lot, hard to say any beatles album is "underrated", but this might be (relatively)
Still don’t have any Beatles songs I truly love but enjoyed basically everything on here. All My Loving and Beethoven my favorites here
Great example of early Beatles.
Lots of bangers, loved Georges sick in bed song. Enjoyed it despite my mood
Simple and fun, they're just the goats
It was midly boring but i think that is because all music sounds like this because obviously the beatles originally invented this style. It had quite A bit of guitar
I picture all the screaming girls at their early U. S. shows when I hear this era of the Beatles. It's interesting to me that half of these are covers — including some of the best tracks. I had wondered how they came to cover "Till There Was You" from The Music Man, and when looking it up discovered that they're really covering Peggy Lee's earlier release.
Tough call between 4 and 5. This one just missed the mark. Still an excellent album.
There were some really good songs on here, and then others that weren't as good. Overall really good though.
Nice to listen with the rain
Probably the worst Beatles album, but still better than 50% off the stuff I have listened to so far. 8/10 Top song All my loving
The music is highly romantic but the closing track, 'Money (That's what I want),' attempts to break away from the album's overarching theme of love.
First four songs are great, and then they hit us with 'Little Child'... Then they hit us with some covers, which are good, and they do them best (imo!). Later Beatles is where they really proved themselves are the GOATs of music now and forever. I've always looked down on these early albums, but as I listen more and more, I appreciate more and more. Imagine what it was like to listen to 'Hold me tight' in '63! And listening now it still feels fresh, not modern, but fresh. Their harmonies will forever be uniquely beautiful. There's something about the combination between Paul and John's voices and how different they are in tone. This is for sure one of their worst albums, but that's a ranking on the most skewed scale in the history of music. This is what people that don't know them think of (alongside Hey Jude and Yellow Submarine), and it feels like a lazy second album. Please please me is better. BUT: this is still really good and really fun to listen to. It's a lot better than most music (even today), that's how good these guys were. Under a different artists at the time, this would be considered a standout album, but because it's the Beatles, it's just 'one of their worst'.
Beatles TWO DAYS IN A ROW? Yesterday for me was Sgt. Pepper's. Very early Beatles. Great songs here, maybe lacking some of the energy I hear in later Beatles songs and even covers. Like I might go listen to my Yellow Matter Custard albums after this (prog/rock supergroup who played a few shows of Beatles covers). They rocked the heck out of some of these songs. "All My Loving" is still one of my favorite Beatles songs. Other highlights: "It Won't Be Long", "You Really Got A Hold On Me". I can't rate it too badly - I'm enjoying it well enough for an early album with a lot of covers.
the beatles are a classic but i felt like most of the songs were repetitive on the lyrics
Well, it's the Beatles...not the best but compared to the other 1963 albums, pretty damn good (though Ray Price's Night Life makes me want to (square) dance).
(78/100)
Another work of art
Most people know that "With the Beatles" was made before the Beatles were at their prime. Almost half of the album consists of covers of songs popular in the 50s and 60s. I think "With the Beatles" is a classic solely because it's the Beatles. No one else could've made "With the Beatles" as good as it is. The best songs are the original songs written by Lennon and McCartney. 4 stars for "With the Beatles".
As a massive Beatles fan, I will admit I've never given the early Beatles albums much of a chance. For a young person interested in the musical process, of course the more experimental and innovate later years are going to be more intriguing. However, it can not be understated that these covers and more poppy originals are the building blocks that gave the fab four the musical talent and confidence to make their later material. Highlights: I feel like picking specific songs from this album is unimportant, their is the obvious timeless classics such as 'all my loving' and the many great covers. Instead I recommend anyone else that may feel less appreciative of the earlier Beatles albums to give this one a full listen, you can absolutely hear the skill, harmonies and collaboration that would lead to those later songs.
There are different generations of the Beatles. The “Revolver” and “White Album” Beatles were the guys you needed to watch so they didn’t try to swim on your carpet. This Beatles were the guys you could take home to your parents. Much more confident in their skill than Please Please Please this album gives some of the earliest signs of global domination. With harmonies like the Everly Bros and style like Buddy Holly they were destined to send young men and women swooning. My personal annoyance is that Apple produced British versions and licensed VeeJay with American versions, which switched up the songs so to listen to “With the Beatles” I had to listen to both “Beatles Second” and “Meet the Beatles” (champagne problems, I know). There are some favorites on here, like All of My Loving and It’s Won’t Be Long. There are some great covers, like Mr. Postman, Money and Roll Over Beethoven. There are a few less-than-preferred tracks here too, like ‘Til There Was You which kind kills the tempo, and Devil In Her Heart which just feels misplaced. Neither are bad, just would be a better “C-Side”. Overall, a historical and personal classic.
Random thoughts: * This really got my brain turning on why this was included and other Beatles albums were not included. I think it is due to some of the original compositions, especially George Harrison's piece, and the cover choices. * The cover choices really show the influence R&B had on them. * I also have always like "Til There Was You" and didn't realize until much later that this was a cover from the musical: "The Music Man". * I definitely would have chosen other Beatles albums over this one for inclusion in 1001 but I can understand maybe why they chose this one. * It also got me to thinking, should compilations be on this list? Past Masters Vol. 1 would have covered all the best songs of the early Beatles. Also, there are other greatest hits albums that are basically staples: Bob Marley Legend, Eagles Greatest Hits, Queen's Greatest Hits, Billy Joel's Greatest Hits. I wonder how those compilation albums should be viewed. * Listening to this album again, "All My Loving" really jumps out as a classic early Beatles tune. * I can respect the choice of this album but not sure it should be included over several other Beatles albums: Help, Magical Mystery Tour, and Please Please Me. Still a great listen though!
Honestly pretty good
A fun Beatles album.. for sure not the best but the songs sound good Fav songs - It Won't Be Long, Please Mister Postman, Devil In Her Heart 4/5
I don’t know if it’s level to give a Beatles album anything less than five stars, but I’m gonna. It’s a good album, no doubt about that, but I just don’t love it.
Jenny - Right up my street, swinging 60s summer vibes and a few familiar favourites. 8/10 Tom - A fun listen to a band I haven’t given enough time to and an album I’ve never heard of! Some great songs but not sure I’d listen to the whole album start to finish again 6/10
Always a pleasure
I really enjoy listening to the early Beatles tracks, much nostalgia...But I can't say it's a 5 star album.
Hey there wait a minute mister postman!!! Cool
Fun to hear this through as a single album at such an early stage of their career. Signature songwriting traits already emerging. Surprising folk-rock vibes here and there. Also the residue of their apprenticeship as a gigging cover-band.
Consistently good songs with some variation. The songs and the overall album are short enough that it doesn't get too repetitive.
beatle
I mean, classic, sure, and an enjoyable listen. But I think the covers are a little weak. Motown originals are better in the original, and Chuck Berry does Chuck Berry better. The American "Meet the Beatles" release is far superior, dropping the covers and leading off with "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "I Saw Her Standing There," and "This Boy." If I'm rating the USA release, it's an easy 5/5. For the UK "with the Beatles" tracklist, I'm kinda surprising myself by only giving this a 4/5. "Meet the Beatles" is the one on my list.
That’s the Beatles all right I liked this maybe just a bit more than Hard Days Night which is very fresh in my mind considering we got it a week ago. I think the average song on here is catchier, there’s a bit more variety, and it feels a bit more from the soul (probably because of the Motown influence). Their version of Please Mr Postman is probably the best song on the album and might be the best version of the song period. The highs just aren’t that high for this one compared to their other albums, I really don’t think any songs in here are must listens. Their sound at this point in their career itself is pretty solid but it really does feel like they didn’t evolve much until their 4th album. It’s still the Beatles, and there’s still a lot of good tracks in this one, but definitely more of a “oh that’s cool to see how they sounded back then” than an essential part of their catalog
Maybe when this is all done I’ll go try to listen to the Beatles chronologically. It would be super interesting to see how they evolved. Here near the start it’s so tight and by-the-book, focused songs, no frills. But they could use an intro or a solo sometimes. There’s no room for anything to breathe here. It almost feels like they’re trying to get through the songs as quick as possible without really speeding up at all? And why does the Beatles doing covers feel so odd? Ultimately, there are no signs of a revolution here. It may be near the peak of early 60s carefully label-crafted boy band pop music, but even though the Beatles wrote these songs themselves they still feel like they came out of the pop machine as opposed to the bursting creativity of their later work. But this is the stuff that enabled the British Invasion and the millions of screaming Beatlemaniacs in the US. It’s the safe stuff that made them a worldwide sensation and allowed them the goodwill to be followed through the experimentation of the years to come.
Hmm... 100+ albums in and the first Beatles album I get is With The Beatles As a Beatles tragic I like this album but don't love it - its got some bonafide classics on it (All My Loving, It Won't be Long) but like all the really early stuff suffers from the early 60s tendency to lean on covers and standards and play it too safe. If this is in the 1001, I'd hope almost every Beatles album that followed is included as well. Having said all that, I'm contractually obliged as a Beatles superfan to give no less than 4 stars to any of their albums, so there it is.
I like the Beatles. This still sounds fresh today 63 years later.
There were quite a few covers on this one. I was surprised to see a song I knew from The Music Man. I enjoyed the album, it feels more consistent than some of the other Beatles albums we've had. Some really good songs and then some filler, but nothing too strange. Most of my favourite songs on it were the covers although for a lot of the covers there are versions I like more. Maybe they were just my favourites because they were more familiar to me or because they reminded me of the versions I knew better? Fav song: Roll Over Beethoven - also liked You Really Got A Hold On Me and Please Mister Postman (all songs where I like a different version) Least fav: Little Child
Had no idea this album existed but it’s a pleasant surprise. John Lennon hadn’t been given the weird creative freedom yet j guess so this is a seriously good album. A tad samey to be fair. Like the covers Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song - it won’t be long Least fav - til there was you
Good album but the mixing is really ass
*Good representation of what the early Beatles were *Great songs but isn't a 5 due to the amount of covers
it's easy to see how the masses were fascinated by the band with a record like this. while their later releases are more sophisticated and experimental, this one is just fun. i'm not giving it a 5 solely because of the sheer amount of covers on this record, but they're still pulled off quite well.
un clasico
Not the biggest early Beatles fan but gotta like All my Loving
Geezuz the lyrics to Little Child doesn't translate well to modern times 😬
Early Beatles before the drugs and trips to India. It's fun.
turns out the beatles are pretty good.
pretty good
Beatles album 2. Not there best. Half the album are covers. It is still the Beatles. I am not a huge fan of the Beatles and this album contains none my favorite songs, so downgraded to 4. 0songs added to playlist.
Not a big Beatles fan, but this was fun and energetic. Even when doing covers, The Beatles have a distinct sound that makes it their own.
Beatles are my number 1 of all time so I can’t be objective. I really like this album as I do all Beatles albums, but this is the worst of their albums. They’re still finding their footing as a recording band here and it shows. This album doesn’t have the benefit of being their debut, which I find to be a stronger album overall. If I were making this list, I would replace this one with Please Please Me.
good album which i like
Man, what a bunch of nerds. No, seriously. They’re still amazingly talented but to know what they become and then to listen to this is just really jarring. They’re so bottled up, so proper.
Love them
Very enjoyable!
had some pretty good ones but not my favorites
Not the Beatles best, but still miles better than the vast majority of albums on this list. I appreciate the passion and instrumentation the boys put into the music, even if they didn't write many of the songs and it wasn't particularly revolutionary.
I don’t care if this is their worst album, cause it has BANGERS
Beautiful harmonies and compositions, some songs maybe repeated too much and dragged a bit. Overall, 8.6/10
Was not expecting to enjoy as much as i did except for Hold Me Tight, one of the most obnoxious songs i have ever heard.
It's the Beatles. Of course it rocks.
honestly, i would've swapped this album with Help!, but this album is still pretty good Favorite Songs: It Won't Be Long, All I've Got To Do, All My Loving, Don't Bother Me, Till There Was You, Roll Over Beethoven, You Really Got A Hold On Me, Money (That's What I Want)
Clearly not their best album, but one I still enjoy quite a lot
It's the Beatles so.... Not sure how I missed their Till There Was You. Auto add to my faves list. The covers are excellent, which makes up for some less than stellar originals. 4.5/5
Not bad. Very poppy. Nice harmonies and an early window of the Beatles at their young age.
I always somehow forget how goated they are till I put them on again
It's the Beatles--but one of my least favorite albums of theirs.
Haven’t listened to this one as much as the other early ones.
Outstanding
I mean... if this isn't peak early Beatles... I don't know what is. It's like a PB and J sandwich. nothing new, but it hits every time. Pop songs at their peak.
Paul Ringo George and John fab 4
It won't be long - 4 All i've got to do - 4 All my loving - 4 Don't bother me - 3 Little child - 3 Till there was you - 3 Please mister postman - 4 Roll over beethoven - 4 Hold me tight - 3 You really got a hold on me - 4 I wanna be your man - 4 Devil in her heart - 3 Not a second time - 3 Money (that's what i want) - 4
I prefer the Beatles from Help Onwards, but even in the covers and early songs you can hear what made them great. Their unbridled passion for the music they love, and the already innovative use of chords and phrasing. And if you don’t find joy in the sub little Richard woos then honestly lighten up
Not my fave fan 4 album, but it's importance cannot be underplayed a youthful energetic movement that changed music forever
3.5 closer to a 4
Not sure what to say about this one. I guess it was worth listening as a part of learning about Western music history but it didn't move me in any special way, unfortunately.
Underrated. I love this record and the choice of covers are great.
From the hip I would say this Beatles is a little too early for me. There's doubtless some good bits & the familiar ear can hear the seeds of what's to come, but overall it's cute. Now, *pats on the head* off you go. After giving a concerted listen, I'm going to have to agree with myself, but to a lesser degree. It's better than I give credit for. And there are more seeds than I thought. And there are more gems than I realized. Still tho, it's impossible to consider on its own merits because its younger siblings exist and are absolute giants (& gods) and so this will always be... cute. 3 & 1/2
IMHO, this is the worst album by the Beatles…still 4 stars.
Can’t go wrong with a Beatles album. I assume this won’t be the last time they pop up on this list. Great early record, their sophomore I think. I still think Rubber Soul is when they really took off into their most interesting period, but this album is still a delight 60 years later.
very cool vibes
Ugh so classic and great. All My Loving, I Wanna Be Your Man, etc. I feel like there’s not a drag on this album. It’s charming!
Stand Beatles Music
Such a comforting album, it is just so them idk what else to say, it’s love, it’s the Beatles
A great early Beatles album.
Cool album. I usually enjoy The Beatles and this was no exception. All My Loving has been one of my top Beatles songs for a long time, and Till There Was You was another standout of mine too. 7.7/10
My parents gave me the US version of this album for my birthday shortly after it came out. I'd listen to it sitting on the floor with my crappy one-speaker/turntable combo kiddy record player. Ha ha that was probably a first-pressing copy; bet it would be worth a mint now if I hadn't destroyed it with my grubby little fingers. This original UK release is a little different from the US one, which made it more interesting to listen to today. There are some great covers of songs from that period on this version, like "You've Really Got a Hold On Me" and "Money." I appreciate that "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" isn't on this version; that's the one thing of theirs from that period that I've really heard enough of at this point. You know what? This is a pretty darn good record; these Beatle guys knew what they were doing. I probably haven't listened to any of this since the Johnson administration, and am enjoying it a lot. 4 stars
It’s so interesting to see how fully formed they were from the start. This record really feels like the bridge between the conservative 50’s style and the wilder cultural revolution that followed the British Invasion. Harrison’s Don’t Bother Me and Ringo’s I Wanna Be Your Man feel innovative for the time. So much of this is so romantic that it’s easy to see how millions of girls swooned.
It Won't Be Long eröffnet mit einem Nachdruck, der keinen Zweifel an der Richtung lässt; All My Loving zeigt die Gruppe in ihrer wohl prägnantesten frühen Melodieform. Die Coverversionen – darunter Please Mr. Postman, Roll Over Beethoven und Money (That's What I Want) – sind keine Verneigungen, sondern Anverwandlungen: straff, selbstbewusst, mit eigenem Stempel versehen.
Gostei, bem Beatles
I’ve always considered myself a huge fan of The Beatles, with the caveat that I much prefer their output starting from A Hard Day’s Night. I mostly thought of the first couple of records as lots of covers with a few other cool songs added. I didn’t think this album would be on the list, given I thought most agreed with my overall assessment. So I was interested to give this a listen today. I ended up liking it much more than I thought I would, as there’s different styles and lots of energy from the whole band. It’s not a great album, but it’s way more consistent than I’d felt from back in the day. Standouts were All My Loving, Till There Was You, Hold Me Tight, You Really Got a Hold on Me, and Money. Tons of fun throughout.
Sorta samey sounding in 2026, but it must have absolutely slayed back in 1963. The best of it is still great: All My Loving, I Wanna Be Your Man, Please Mister Postman.
Some of these early songs are mixed strangely. I think it’s a mix of hard panning and just general volume levels. My general impression of The Beatles is that the worst songs are merely mediocre. This album is aligning with this. Or maybe they are just pleasantly meaningless. This is only their second album though. Don’t bother me is a funny idea. The backing instrumentals are also less loud. Devil in her heart is fun. It has pretty harmonies. Money (That’s what I want) reminds me of minion rush. On a second listen it’s actually very difficult to hate any of this. It’s actually just very competent and fun pop music. The mr postman opening melody throws me. I guess the Beatles are alright. 4/5
It's been a while since my almost-mandatory discovery and temporary obsession with The Beatles so it's been a long time since I've played this album in full. I appreciate all their eras (doesn't it seem strange now to talk about a band that was only around about ten years as having multiple eras), and the early albums are no exception. It starts off with maybe my favorite early Beatles track in It Won't Be Long, and continues with bangers for three more. Little Child is the album's first foot wrong and my pick for weakest Lennon/McCartney original. But it's followed by easily the album's best cover in Till There Was You. The rest of the covers don't do too much for me, but Ringo's turn on vocals, I Wanna Be Your Man, is another of my favorite early Beatles tracks. Not A Second Time is the last essential album cut. If this album was a 5, then every Beatles album would probably have a case. As it is, there are too many covers that are just alright for me to give this the same score as their half-dozen-plus absolute classics. Compared to other early rock & roll albums I've drawn though? This is light years ahead.
Usually don’t love the Beatles but this is a good album
Love early Beatles.
A bunch of Beatles songs I haven't visited before. There's a reason they're one of the best bands of all time. Only note is the abrupt start to album. 4/5
Very fun. Great Debut
cool album, my favourites were till there was you and it won't be long. I can see how this album influenced a lot of songs later on.
well yes
Great Album. Contains some of the biggest bangers oat
How do you even rate something like this? It is virtually perfect, and forms a lot of the bedrock upon which most of the albums in this project - by ALL bands - were built. At the same time, it is so firmly entrenched in my brain that I don't even need to listen to it anymore - I can call up any song and listen to it in my head at any time - so it's not as exciting to actually listen to it anymore. I think I have to give it 4 stars, but came very close to going with 5. I would rather listen to later-era Beatles than this but this is undeniable. The weaker songs are all that drop it below the 5-star Beatles albums. Let's call it a 4.9.
Killer album and a pleasant surprise. Short and fun, had somehow never heard this one before. f Put it on this morning and just realized I'm already on my third listen. I take for granted how completely the Beatles had perfected the art of the pop song, and this is them still figuring things out. The Motown covers hit.
Interesting covers and a more mature sound than a lot of what I think of when I think of early Beatles music. Given about half of this album are covers, that may be why I feel this is "grown up" versus their other early stuff. Overall - 3.5 to 4 stars? It's early in my listening, so it's hard to put this on a scale!
The sound is definitely of its age now but, leaving aside the covers, the Beatles really knew how to write great pop songs.
Lots of future artists style references on this disk, probably on all Beatle’s discography to be honest. Im not a huge fan and I know little of them, I will give a 7,5/10
Bastante cool
Not their best album, not their deepest album, but one of their most vital. Artistically: very good. Historically: massive (it’s said to be) Pure listening pleasure: still high.
An interesting album that remind me of my childhood and Sundays with my father
Raices rock and roll de los beatles
10/14 No es el mejor de los beatles pero es bueno. Tiene clásicos
one of their better early albums, really good album, great tunes with a lot of charisma
Bass and Drums 10/10 Rest halt Beatles und 60's. Hat aber Banger! 4/5
Listening to this album is like watching Michael Jordan play at North Carolina...nobody knew what was about to be unleashed onto the world.
All my loving and please Mr postman great. Others all great but... Dare I say it, a bit samey. I get it, it's the Beatles.
This was, as expected, an easy listening album. So good I had to dance to it while doing breakfast. Their cover of Mr Postman is quite good and All my loving is the perfect single to this album. It is not their greatest work, though. 4/5
As a kid who grew up with a music nerd father, the Beatles were one of the select artists I had downloaded on my iPod Nano. One summer at the park there was a face painting stand and for my turn, I asked for John Lennon glasses. To my 6-year-old self's dismay, the teenage volunteer awkwardly asked my parents who that was. Reflecting on the Beatles now, I don't think I have listened to one of their albums front to back (despite knowing a large chunk of their discography), so maybe I was a poser. I enjoyed listening to this album, however I can recall tracks from other albums I have enjoyed more (understandable, as this is still early Beatles). Can't wait to thoroughly explore the rest of their releases! Thank you papa for raising me to have slightly pretentious but good taste!
I try to imagine what this would’ve sounded like to my grandparents in 1964. Aliens from beyond the moon.
7/10
Honestly I get it. High BPM, nice and short. They were so good at Pop music.
Beatle slop
Sunku pripažinti, kad tikrai neblogai skamba.
Can't go wrong with the fab 4!
Je n’avais jamais écouté un album en entier des B. C’est parti ! Écoute en ballade, j’aime bien, y a du soleil dans le casque
Banger
It's the worst pre-Yellow Submarine album by the boys, and by far the least important entry in their discography. Why it's on the list ahead of other Beatles albums is possibly the most bizarre entry in the entire list.
Not the best of the Beatles but a solid 4, it's the Beatles.
Muy bueno. No hay más que decir son los beatles loco.
Wonderful album Some songs aren't written by them and also personally I prefer their later period, but I would be lying if I said I don't love these songs and the albums from this period as well, I just don't think they're as strong as what they eventually went on to do. Either way, great album.
7/10 fav song, Hold Me tight
Just never really got them, yes I know it’s me
Beatlessssss
I unsurprisingly enjoyed this. Upbeat, fun, classic Beatles sound.
Rockt, macht spaß, perfekt für Café am Morgen in der Sonne
Not the Beatles best, but vibrant and joyous. With a couple classics
not my favorite of their albums but a good refresher on some songs.
Proof the Beatles were great before they were phenomenal
Oh yeah
not the best beatle album but it gets that easy vibe from listening them
Not sure what era to refer to this Beatles as, maybe the Britpop era? I'm sure there are specific distinctions that I don't know, all I know is that this is earlier Beatles with their more poppy and quick songs. Overall really good, with a few real humdingers on there, but can't really hold a candle to the REAL good ones
Didn't zone out except a lil bit. Groovy music~
Not their best, but still great.
These lads love kissing!
I hadn't listened to this one before, other than the singles. I love the Beatles and everything they touch turns to gold. It's cool to hear early Beatles do cover songs. Such great harmonies and captivating playing. They take blah songs and make them cooler.
Love this album, but wish they had done a better job of uplifting the original songwriters.
Such a good one to wake up to on a sunny Saturday morning. Unfortunately I am an insufferable Beatles enjoyer. Some absolute classics, but still a little bit too early sixties rock n roll for full marks, there was no need for the Mr Postman cover lol.
Some of these songs haven’t aged well, but, as a fan of the Beatles, I still enjoyed it
An album who reminds me my brother, i know each song of this album because of him, very fun and full of joy tthis album, my favourite Hold Me Thight
Pretty good but their later work is even better.
This is really good, I wouldn’t say great. It does showcase the band at the early stage where they already show clear signs of making a larger splash. It is not the sound and style of their later offerings which I most identify them with, but everyone starts somewhere. Worthy of the round up. 3.5/5
I was raised on the American version of this one via my dad’s collection, so it has a special place in my playlist heart. Interesting the amount of cover tunes on this that were not on the U.S. release. Can it be argued that this one doesn’t belong on this list given the amount of more mature material from the band yet to be heard? Possibly. But there’s more going on here with certain arrangements and use of chords that might not be as noticeable to most. Which makes for a solid listen.
It’s the Beatles and it is really good but not great. Still doing lots of covers, but the covers are really good. 3.75/5
7,9/10
great
Early Beatles PSA: much better in mono (unfortunately not on streaming) and should be listened with I Want to Hold Your Hand and This Boy
Awesome album
Thought this album would be longer, but I'm not upset about it. Enjoying the whole experience of this album until the very end.
The album deserves a 3, +2 for Beatles, -1 for being the Beatles not at their best. That equals 4.
There's a real variety of styles on this album from Roll Over Beethoven to All My Loving to Money. But there is a cconsistency that keeps the bar consistently high
Some interesting covers and solid originals
I had a tape (we had very few of those) of this era Beatles growing up, so nostalgia is strong. Some solid music there all the same.
3,6 Highlights: All I've Got To Do, All My Loving
love it
Even "mid" Beatles is pretty great. I wish we didn't have quite so many covers, and that "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was here. How did "I Want to Hold Your Hand" not make it! I know the music industry was different in the early 60s, even from what it would be 5 years later. But as a listener decades after this album was released it would be great to have that single on this one. FOUR STARS
Favourite Tracks: You Really got a hold on me
chill vibes
This does make me understand why people like the Beatles. It is actually energetic, and here I can hear how they didn't just invent the overdone standard pop stuff that has been copied to death and then some in the last 60 years, but how also they were at the roots of much of the more Qualitative pop as well.
With The Beatles is an album strongly influenced by American rock'n'roll, especially Elvis Presley, which is visible in the vocal style and melodic structure of the songs. The album has a romantic and accessible atmosphere, typical of the pop of the early 60s. The strong point is the energy of the performances and the chemistry between the members, which reflects their experience as a live band, even if at the compositional level the material still remains relatively simple compared to their later developments. Overall, it is a very pleasant experience and an important step in the development of the band. Rating: 8.5 / 10
Mostly covery.
Very powerful songs and great vocal and beatiful choir. Happy songas? but i didnt fing song, which make me like i am on paradise
I was enjoying it... It's just old.
Favourite Songs: All My Loving Little Child Roll Over Beethoven
Classic album. Not my favorite album, but still great songs.
This one is The Beatles second album, it's relatively solid throughout. There's this nocturnal mood that is present that I like quite a lot, the album cover definitely helps reinforcing the mood. Because it's an early Beatles album, songs don't tend to be too unique or distinctive; like their 1966-1969 albums. Which is honestly fine sometimes, and is comparable to junk food to me, good every now and then. Highlight Song/s: "All My Loving" and "Please Mr. Postman"
Better than Coldplay
Eu confesso que nunca tinha parado pra ouvir the Beatles, mas foi uma experiência bem boa. As musicas são muito bem feitas, infelizmente eu não prestei muita atenção na letra mas imagino que sejam coisas importantes
Early Beatles, good but not great
besides the fact most songs were centred around love, which is not usually my jam, its still an album i enjoyed quite a bit and found myself dancing to
Early 60s rock. Second album. Really, fun, cute version of the Beatles.
Vaikka en ollut tätä levyä kokonaisuudessa koskaan kuunnellut, on suurin osa biiseistä tuttuja. Omat suosikkini on Please Mister Postman ja Money.
Ok I get it but still don’t love it
Its a great album and lays the ground for all the amazing things we will come to see from the 4. Songs like All My Loving, Please Mister Postman and It Won't be Long would get into my playlist of their best songs and there isn't really a bad listen on there. This said, there are a few songs you wouldn't necessarily choose to put on, and most of the album are cover tracks so it can't be described as one of their greatest. 8/10
Not the best of their works. Found this one to be a bit bland Overall still enjoyable 4 ⭐️
Really solid album overall, though their later recordings have higher fidelity and a couple of the songs are not my cup of tea.
Killer, knew every song, has to be one of the most well known albums on earth. Love the early Beatles sound
Never been a huge Beatles fan but I enjoyed a lot of songs on this album, I can see why they were huge back then and still are respected now. Tracks I've heard before: Please Mr Postman Top 3: It Won't Be Long All My Loving Roll Over Beethoven Bottom 3: Till There Was You You Really Got A Hold On Me Money (That's What I Want)
just a great listen. really enjoyable
Wow they were horny. Such cringey lyrics compared to later stuff. But still, some classics on here, and the covers are fun.
I love the beatles, and this was an album I hadn't spent as much time with. I really enjoyed it!
Jolly time. What else is there to say about the Beatles tbh. Very fun album, with a lot of good tracks. Can't say anything other then good time.
4.0 stars I much prefer the latter half of the Beatles albums, as they're far more interesting/exploratory. BUT, without the success of the early albums there is no Abbey Road, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, etc. Plus, there are some genuinely great songs on this album. Favorite track: Roll Over Beethoven
With the Beatles is perhaps the most poppiest of all Beatle records, but it’s important part of the evolution from Please please me to Abbey road. Maybe this really is a solid 3/5 record, but have to give one extra star because it’s The Beatles
The Beatles are my favourite band ever, and there is only one or two (if we also count the Yellow Submarine LP) that is a not definite 5 star album, With the Beatles is one of them. It's a classic early Beatles album, with almost half songs being covers. The original songs are great but they are not on the She Loves You, I Want To Hold Your Hand or Please, Please Me level of greatness. I love some of the original songs very much (the opening It Won't Be Long, All My Loving, I Wanna Be Your Man and Harrison's first song he wrote in The Beatles, Don't Bother Me the most). And overall, the album's influence can't be denied. 4.5 stars, rounded down to 4.
Classic, early days but hints of greatness to come
can’t go wrong with the beatles
Positivo, bailable
Really enjoyed this album felt as though it really showed George Harrisons promise at such a young age especially on tracks like "All My Loving" and "Till There Was You", my two favorites off the record.
Toimii. 4/5.
It's true: "the Beatles don't even slap!" They didn't yet - but everything was in place. Is it a goofy mix? Of course - stereo had barely been invented and there are only 4 tracks in the mix. Focus on the intention and what they were trying to do. Honestly, this album is better if you just force your device to mono while listening. "Don't Bother Me" is a standout, sounds way ahead of its time and George Harrison is already shredding. Covers on the LP are a classic 60's thing, it is what it is. The Little Richard-style "woo" is pretty cheeky. Even here, Paul McCartney's voice is just wild. "Till There Was You" is incredibly impressive to hear given how raw the vocal is - they just barely avoid that overblown 60's vocal fuzz (tube mics and shitty preamps - looking at you Phil Spector) and actually have some nice space and warmth in the vocal track. It is still pretty hot but sounds fantastic for the song, nice reverb as well. All in all, it's a very early album but sounds quintessentially Beatle-y and nobody has done it like the lads from Liverpool.
I love 60s Beatles.
This is the Beatles. Obviously it should be a 5* album right? But knowing what was to come makes some of these early covers not quite live up to expectations. Still a great album with so much potential ahead of these lads from Liverpool
Favorite Tracks: Hold Me Tight, Money
like most of the Beatles fans, its mainly a childhood attachment. loved this album ive never listened to it beginning to end, still wouldn't put it in my top 3 Beatles albums. my mom and my dad would sing me all my loving, brought back some nostalgic feelings its only my 6th day here and I was already waiting for some Beatles, happy it happened so early
I haven't listened to that much Beatles previously, so this album was very interesting in that it helped me understand how they were so influential. While the album did have a common feel throughout, each song felt distinctly unique. One aspect I particularly liked was the drumming and guitar - it seems distinctly bluesy, most notably with the guitar in Roll Over Beethoven. Maybe it's just because I've listened to a lot of reggae and soul (meaning that's the influence I recognise), but the album really felt like something coming out of that genre rather than anything I'd expect from rock. In particular, Hold Me Tight felt quite reggae. In any case, I enjoyed this album more than I expected. It isn't in my normal genres, but I'd listen to it again. Probably a 7/10 for me, so I'll give it a 4.
I like the Beatles a lot but I feel their earlier era (not that they were around all that long all things considered) isn't quite as good for me, they're still excellent singers but I feel that they hadn't quite found their music yet and were still progressing in their song writing skills, they were hardly 20 here so I can't blame them and there's still some really good songs, but I knew going into this it wouldn't quite stack up against there many later albums. The highlights of the album for me were 'All my loving' a classic Beatles song, 'Roll over Beethoven' which was very rock and rollsy, as quite a few of the songs of this era were (an aside, it reminded me both of Elvis's 'Jail House Rock' and of course of the 1992 film Beethoven) as well as 'Money (that's what I want)', a song I knew but was less familiar with as a Beatles song. Unfortunately quite a few of the songs were relatively forgettable but were still largely decent, though 'don't bother me' was a bit of a low point. A strong three, nothing more. 70/100 Score edited 28/01/26
Loved it! Not their best album but it tells so much about their story! The mixing was bad though hahaha. But other times, right?
This is still the early "boy band" period of The Beatles, which is not the period I prefer. Still, it has good songs like "All My Loving", "It Won't Be Long", and the Harrison song "Don't Bother Me". Interesting that the album has a bunch of covers (Mister Postman, Roll Over Beethoven, You Really Got A Hold On Me, etc).
Siempre gustaron los Beatles, en especial sus albums mas viejitos. Tienen una vibra a verano y a nostalgia incomparable
John Lennon singing Motown covers will always be for me. First repeat play of the list!
Classic Beatles 1: Till There Was You 2: Devil in Her Heart 3: Roll Over Beethoven
eat eating ate
Derivative, innovative, classic
A great collection of their songs and covers. I didn't know until now that it was released the day JFK was assassinated
I’m with the Beatles on this one but I think they have another level to go
Not my favourite Fab 4 album by a long chalk. And I would only play it occasionally. But there isn't a weak track on the album. Although some of the best songs on the album are written elsewhere, Lennon and McCartney's songwriting is starting to shine and they hold their own in some illustrious company.
not my favorite, but it's a good album
Not my favorite Beatles album, but there are not bad Beatles albums.
This might be my least favorite Beatles album, but I really like the Beatles, there are a couple bangers and nothing I hate. But not a Beatles album I would go out of my way to defend
actually kinda whips. i dont know why im surprised it has like universal pop appeal. it really crystalized for me that transition from blues to mainstream rock n roll that never completely clicked for me (see: You Really Got A Hold On Me). i understand how one would develop a mania over these "beatles" fellows. favorite song is probably All I've Got To Do
Reminds me a family reunion and being with really lovely people hahahaha
I liked the first couple songs, the rest were alright could be better if they were longer.
1st listen: "You Really Got A Hold On Me" and "Please Mister Postman" are def my favourite, I didn't like "Little Child", "Money (That's What I Want)" is meh. Other songs are really good. 2nd listen: Some other songs got to me too, "All My Loving" and "Devil in her heart" are great. But "You Really Got A Hold On Me" is still my favourite. Everything else is the same. I didn't hear this album before or any songs from it. It is a good album, it's giving love, yearning and intimacy but also standards. Most songs are really soft and loving, deffinitely my vibe of soft and loving (I do vibe with almost everything tho). And I will listen again.
Started Jan 3 2026 (my first album of the journey!!) Finished Jan 3 2026 - really enjoyed the covers - looove old ‘60s rock and roll
Firm believer that most of what The Beatles did from Rubber Soul on is 5 stars. The older stuff is still worth listening to though. But I usually don't consider these albums as necessary for full through listens.
Pretty good
Solid
Digg å høre på som bakgrunnsmusikk, mye man kjenner igjen
It Won’t Be Long - 5/5 All I’ve Got To Do - 4/5 All My Loving - 4.5/5 Don’t Bother Me - 3.5/5 Little Child - 2/5 Till There Was You - 4/5 Please Mister Postman - 5/5 Roll Over Beethoven - 5/5 Hold Me Tight - 4.5/5 You Really Got A Hold On Me - 3/5 I Wanna Be Your Man - 3.5/5 Devil In Her Heart - 4/5 Not A Second Time - 4.5/5 Money(That’s What I Want) - 4/5
Nice Album, mysiga låtar och skulle absolut kunna lyssna på igen - mys pys
The Beatles are a classic. This album isn’t the most popular, to my knowledge but it still has their sound.
Fav tracks: it won’t be long, all my loving, hold me tight, money (that’s what I want) Such an iconic album. Little to no skips
was a good album but i didn’t rlly feel like it would be one i could listen to regularly - really liked the song “devil in her heart” and the guitar.
Amo all my loving, mas tem umas mais ou menos aqui
Good vibes don’t usually like Beatles but this was alright
I really like this after knowing this is their second released album. You hear a lot of Paul on this one and the covers are impressive because they stay true to the song but The Beatles still add a layer of grit and pace to their versions
Not a Beatles record ive listend to more than once or twice, but enjoyed it more than i thought i would. Some cool covers that i hadn't really acknowledged before, and always interesting to hear the younger versions of john and paul's voices.
I'm a massive fan of the post-touring studio band that the Beatles were in the late sixties. In fact, there is no era of any band that I like more. It's not that I don't like the earlier Beatlemania teeny-bopper tunes. It's just that I tend to dismiss that era of the band, even though I have always appreciated their hard-earned chops from their Hamburg and Cavern Club residencies. I had heard many of these tunes before on compilation albums, but I had never sat down and listened to With the Beatles, and I was seriously impressed. I wouldn't call this teeny-bopper pop at all. It's more like proto-garage rock. It is lo-fi, fast, semi-aggressive dance-pop that is clearly rooted in an appreciation for American R&B. I even detect a little bossa nova in "Till There Was You." This is a special record that I'm quite happy to have finally heard. The early Beatles sound in no way replaces my love for their later work, but it stands up as a work of real rock 'n roll, not just a loose collection of singles meant to make the girls scream. Four stars.
Nice album, not their best too (actual rating: 3.5/5)
62 year old 'Boy Band' time capsule.
Good one! Non avevo mai ascoltato quest'album e non conoscevo nessuna delle canzoni. Forse un po' monotono? Ma i Beatles sono pur sempre i Beatles.
I understand how this album was so influential at the time. Band feels counterculture for the time! 2-3 songs I recognized. Definitely some strong songs.
Nice catchy songs I liked it
I like it, some songs giving cowboy or like country vibes lol. Not bad i mean it is The Beatles sooo checks out
With The Beatles - The Beatles (1963) Issue - CD (1987 mastering) 1) It Won't Be Long - 4 2) All I've Got To Do - 3.5 3) All My Loving - 5 4)Don't Bother me - 3.5 5) Little Child - 3 6) Till There Was You - 3 7) Please Mister Postman - 4 8) Roll Over Beethoven - 3.5 9) Hold Me Tight - 3.5 10) You Really Got A Hold On Me - 4 11) I Wanna Be Your Man - 3.5 12) Devil In Her Heart - 3.5 13) Not A Second Time - 3 14) Money - 3.5
Well, it’s the Beatles innit? Their second album and they’re exploring the studio space. Bound to the 3-minutes-and-out formula, they’re pushing it out lyrically. Part of their power came from their collaboration: every member gets a bit of spotlight. And their energy! They always sound into it, which helps rescue the clunkers. They were so tight after years in Hamburg. With the Beatles builds another few rooms in the house of legend.
So...what I have learned today is that in the early 1960s the Beatles were basically indistinguishable from the Everly Brothers. I'm excited to get some more Beatles albums to see their revolu...er...evolution. Anyway, I like the Everly Brothers and, it turns out, I like this version of the Beatles.
This obviously isn't peak Beatles, but it's still pretty damn fun. I had to laugh when the Mr Postman cover came on, then laugh at myself for enjoying it so much.
I like the Pixies so I liked the album and the sound to it, and I wouldnt mind listening to it again. I wouldn't change one of the songs if they came on, but I probably will not voluntarily listen to this album again. It's just not my current music taste but I can appreciate it for what it is.
It's a good, early Beatles album. I was more than a little surprised that there was a good number of covers on the album, which was not bad, just unexpected. I feel the Beatles did a decent job in paying homage to the original but providing their own spin. Overall, not a very good album. Doesn't quite have the boppers of their other, more well-known albums, but still has good, decent songs. Having listened to a number of Beatles albums (this was my first time listening to this particular one), it's interesting to see their progression throughout their discography. With the Beatles undeniably has their earlier sound, which is what started their stardom - and for good reason! There's not much that can be said about The Beatles that hasn't been said already.
Perhaps the lowest rated Beatles album IMO. Too many covers
Great early (the 1st?) Beatles.
How they were able to create this album during the chaos that was Theo 1963 astounds me. Absolute songwriting masters with creativity exuding everywhere.
Take off time, still such a great sound. Urgent breath-taking. This showed the potential within. Just a great album.
I have 3 older sisters, our little Viking portable mono record player was very busy between each of them hauling it between bedrooms to play the Beatles and the Monkees. I still have their copy, same cool cover but the Canadian release was titled "Beatlemania! With the Beatles" and lists quotes from the press, which ruins it but I kind of like it. I listened to side one for the first time since then yesterday, it's the absolutely abused side because it has all the hits. Side two this morning, mostly covers and weaker originals, but they all come back. I'm by no means a Beatles purist, and these were the days when records were thrown together out of two hit singles and 10 fillers until the Beatles changed all that a couple years later with Rubber Soul. There were a lot of great rock and roll songs at the time but these still sound new, fresh, and different to me.
Favorite Track: All My Loving
This album was very good
Having a Buddy Holly album the day before an early Beatles album was such a great way to see the progression of rock music in such a short time. It’s also crazy to think that the jangly early-Beatles sound was groundbreaking and a heavier rock sound. There are a bunch of covers on this album, but that was common for the Beatles and how they broke into the mainstream. Not a whole lot of huge hits but I’ll gladly come back to this album often.
Lesser Beatles which means it’s still great. Couple of the George songs are sounding a little puny here.
Early Beatles albums like this one are cool for the mix of covers and originals. To see their influences and vast musical knowledge and how they are starting to apply that to their own songs.
Good songs but cant be compared to their later works
Jeg elsker Beatles for altid men det er jo ikke så meget dem, for de fleste sange har de ikke selv skrevet
B+ It Won't Be Long 4 All I've Got To Do 4 All My Loving 4 Don't Bother Me 5 Little Child 3 Till There Was You 4 Please Mister Postman 4 Roll Over Beethoven 3 Hold Me Tight 3 You Really Gotta Hold On Me 3 I Wanna Be Your Man 3 Devil In Her Heart 5 Not A Second Time 5 Money 4 I’ve always been a huge Beatles fan, I know their entire discography like the back of my hand. I always considered this an underrated album from there so I was surprised to see it included. This is their first real original piece of work, and it’s electric. It’s like someone pack a punched that early 60s pop sound and made it an entire album. So much diversity in the songs too.
Really good album
Solid, of course, with banger after banger. The originals are catchy, and the covers (with the notable exception of “Roll Over Beethoven”) infectious. At this point, the band sounded young—but nevertheless fresh/distinctive and polished. And, perhaps most importantly, genuine. With the Beatles was the pinnacle of the Merseybeat, eh? It’s not hard to believe that this band will soon change the way we all think of popular music.
This is my favourite Beatles album. I love its simplicity and enthusiasm. The tracks are short and sweet and just invite toe tapping! My challenge buddy has pointed out that the tracks ‘little child’ makes the band sound like a peado ring. But aside from that, I fucking love it.
Quite enjoyable despite the lack of hits
i've listened to every beatles album multiple times through... except this one! this popped up as my album of the day and i thought 'is this a compilation album??" but nope, this album somehow never really found its way into my collection! So it was a real treat to listen to. Some tracks were already familar, in fact most were. to me, they never put out an album i wouldn't willingly put on and listen all the way through. fav tracks: it wont be long / till there was you.
Good, early works
poor John fighting for his life on some of those
Pretty solid album
Later Beatles are better Beatles but this is still a solid record!
Bueno
Love beatles, but not exatly my vibe
Early Beatles obviously isn’t their best stuff but still has charm and quality.
Fun
I mean, there aren't any Beatles albums I think are "bad," though I was surprised to see this rank so highly on so many lists. In many ways it feels like a continuation of Please Please Me, though they already sound more produced and tighter, like a band learning how to use the studio differently than the club stage. I prolly like the original songs on Please Please Me more but the covers here more; they were so good at making covers sound fresh and exciting without obscuring the original.
This is The Beatles as “punk rock.” It’s raw, slightly distorted with lovely harmony. I think this is the stage of The Beatles, including some other hard driving hits like “Paperback Writer, “Taxman,” and “Doctor Robert” that really appealed to me before I really appreciated The Beatles. Honestly I’d forgotten this album existed, but almost every track is a banger. I can picture them playing some sweaty Hamburg pub for four hours, hopped up on caffeine and other substances. I also picture Pete Best with them before he got the boot.
