Overall rating by me: 7,5/10 Songs added to playlist: ,,How Much More", ,,Lust To Love", ,,This Town", ,,Skidmarks On My Heart" Notes: Absolutely my taste is music. This makes me desperately wish for spring to come faster. Very jumpy, fun and with so much soul.
I actually liked it a lot
that was fun
Good fun
I like it, it's like early Blonde, post-punk. Light production, good songwriting. 35 minutes of good music. 4/5
It's very interesting that these ladies were setting up 90's alternative rock / pop punk with their basic chord progressions and incredibly catchy hooks. But listen carefully to "Our Lips Are Sealed", you could hear the same 5 chord progressions that made Green Day very very popular. This album is not just MTV bubble gum pop, there's some serious post punk / new wave punk vibes on it. It most definitely needs to be on this list. It's funny how many 80s New Wave bands secretly laid groundwork for 90s alternative rock while getting almost none of the credit for it. 3.73 / 5 stars
HS Cheerleaders, cornerstone of american new wave Our lips are sealed Lust for love We got the beat
Great album. Lots of hits, and they kept it interesting.
So much fun
We got the beat otro trallazo para saltar.
this one has cute songs and it's a solid album for when it came out
Loved it. So fun & gets a little more rock than I realized.
Super fun and energetic. A lovely tonic for anything, including the massive traffic jam on my way to work!
Just a fun, bouncy Pop Rock album. Belinda Carlisle has that sauce and the whole band is tight, everything is short but filled to the brim and while the production is polished and radio-friendly, the band's punk roots still shine through in the energetic tempos and driving drums. This album is essential listening. It manages to be critically respected yet endlessly fun, proving that pop music can be both commercially massive and artistically credible.
As a Brit, I am more familiar with Fun Boy Three's version of Our Lips Are Sealed, which has a much more sombre feel. I like both, and I guess I knew Jane Wiedlin could write a sparkling pop tune, as she did with Rush Hour. The more joyful take on Our Lips Are Sealed is typical of the album's mood. It's just a really fun album with most tracks matching up to the singles.
The Go-Go's walked so Best Coast could fly
Vibey, I liked it!
Great energy. Takes me back to when I was 10 singing with my hairbrush. Wish I could have been a Go-Go! Would never have listened to this album if not for this app. This was such a treat this morning to listen to this!
This album was a ton of fun! I found her voice a bit grating, but I was dancing the whole time (well as much as you can dance while sitting with the great unwashed waiting for a flight in LHR). The percussion in this album was awesome! I especially noticed in How Much More. I appreciated just how unserious this album was. After a lot of heavy albums it was fun just to have some fun again! Tonite was a fun upbeat little party song! I loved the little guitar moments thrown in there. I actually loved the vocals on Lust to Love and the baseline on This Town. Heh one I finally know! We Got the Beat is so awesome! They definitely do got the beat. Fading Fast and automatic were a nice change in speed, without dropping the pace of the album if you know what I mean. You can’t walk… and skid marks on my heart were very enjoyable songs. I don’t really have anything to say about them as I was walking about a mile to my gate while listening to them. Can’t stop the world was an awesome closer that really sums up the album! Overall, 4/5 ⭐️! I really enjoyed this. I went into it thinking “oh great, an entire early 80s dance album”, but it pleasantly surprised me! I will be listening again. Favourites: how much more, tonite, we got the beat Least Favourites: I don’t really have any for this album, at least not anything I deem offensive enough to be here. 6/1089
Great album! I really enjoyed that. Will probably listen to this from time to time. But is it an album everyone needs to listen to before they die? Not exactly. Like I said, it's good. But I don't think it's world-shaking or momentous.
Fun, upbeat album. Lost to Love was the standout for me. 3.4/5 but I’ll round up just for Lust to Love.
Underrated band and album.
First listen, and wow—this is better than expected! Infectious, sun-soaked new wave pop energy with a raw edge that keeps it from feeling too polished. The hooks are irresistible, the rhythm section drives hard, and Belinda Carlisle’s vocals have that perfect mix of sweetness and attitude. It’s fun, rebellious, and surprisingly tight for a debut. A pure slice of early-’80s cool.
what an awesome new wave pop album. it's just solid track after solid track. the two hits are baller and all the other tracks as well are just tasty synthy goodness.
I wish this list had more fun pop '80s albums on it, because this album is just fun the whole way across. No doubt the hits of We Got The Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed are the highlights of the album, but these women know how to rock!
8/10 04.01.2026
I inherited this record from my mom's collection and never gave it a spin mainly because I assumed by the album cover that it wasn't something I'd be into. How wrong I was -- this album jams. Some solid grooves in the interplay between drum and bass here and the songs themselves are entertaining. Standouts: Our Lips Are Sealed + We Got the Beat (obvs), Automatic, This Town, and You Can't Walk In Your Sleep. I'll say some of this sort of runs together in terms of the rhythms + tones employed. But they are good rhythms and tone so I'm not to pressed on the issue. For me this is a low 4.
Power pop has me cruising. Fun, upbeat album. Little bit samey throughout, but who gives a toot?
Some real high quality surf rock, there were parts in the beginning half when I was really jamming. It's nice when the only song that you know from an album, We Got The Beat, turns out to be one of the worst on there. First half was way stronger than the second half, but still all around very fun album
Knew way more songs on here than I anticipated. Fun boppin' album!
Immediate good vibes. It's fun and upbeat. I liked it, liked the first song the most. Fun and girly.
Lovely record, songs were good and I liked how it flowed from start to finish.
really really fun! I love being a girl!
I'll be brave and say what we're all thinking.....we got the beat reminds me of jimmy neutron
Straightforward and fun. Must-listen #276.
This was fun! I realised I knew more songs than I thought, mostly from covers, and I'm aware of the Bangles/The Germs connections, so the punkiness didn't surprise me. Didn't feel like the kind of album that would change the world, but a very pleasant time was had.
80s punk-pop
best song: tonite/lust to love worst song: how much more surprise song: automatic
Fun 80s pop
Fun 80's Summer music.
My rating 3.8
I was surprised by how consistently good this album was. I feel like a lot of new wave bands have one or two bangers per album and the rest is pretty samey but this was really good, even if you don't count the obvious singles.
Really solid album and songs
Oh, this is a lot of fun! And I love me a girl band from the 80's.
Solid album. I liked it a bunch and had fun listening to it.
Knew the singles but the rest of the album was equally as energetic and catchy.
A 3.5, but I can’t bring myself to give it a mere 3
Really dig this. One of my favorite flavors of early 80s rock
4/5. Classic new wave
What a great album! Poppy, punk fun that at times borders on surf rock... one of the most successful ever releases from an all-female band, and music I would never have listened to if not for this list. A well deserving entry for sure. I did know a couple of the songs, but couldn't have told you whose songs they were, which is always a nice surprise. I'd absolutely listen to this again any day.
fun et sympa
Great alt pop, even better from a "girl band"
4 1/2. I’ve been loving this album since I was 12 years old.
Pop/Punk Mädels
loved it honestly
4.2 Really enjoyed that, total surprise. It was a bit punk, a bit pop, a bit Nu Wave. Echoes of Police in there also. What surprised me most is that it really sounded like it was laying the ground work for most of pop punk. How much more sounds like an early Green Day track whilst Tonite like early Offspring. First half was certainly stronger than the second, but plenty of stuff to go back and enjoy here
this album is so fun, one of the most 80s sounding albums i’ve ever listened to. great album
I really enjoyed this top to bottom. Really fun and two classics on it.
Always fun
--Our Lips are Sealed...really dig the bass on this. good pop --How Much More...fun chorus. not much else to it --Tonite...solid pop punk driven forward by the bass --Lust to Love...we shift to something a little darker. Carlisle shines on this --This Town...dark surf pop. I like the small guitar spikes --We Got the Beat...always loved the bass groove in this one. simple but effective --Fading Fast...these ladies certainly had great pop sensibilities --Automatic...this one's a little different. Most of the album has somewhat needly arpeggiated guitar chords. This one has more of a crunch --You Can't Walk in Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep)...fun pop punk --Skidmarks on My Heart...feels like a lesser version of previous tracks. this is the first real miss for me --Can't Stop the World...a solid but uninspiring rocker to close
I’ve listened to some of the songs from this album, but never the whole thing. I love Belinda Carlisle, though, and Heaven Is a Place on Earth is one of my favorite songs—partly due to its use in the Black Mirror episode San Junipero. The opening of the album is amazing, with a fun beat and instruments slowly being added. It’s a pretty perfect opening segment, and the rest of the song doesn’t disappoint. How Much More is also really good, with a fun guitar riff and chorus. I can definitely sense that it inspired Green Day and some of riot grrrl’s more melodic stuff, such as Bikini Kill’s Reject All American or Bratmobile’s Pottymouth. Tonite then pushes things to a more dramatic level, with a building melody and riff. The lyrics have some great imagery—albeit a bit stereotypical—and really serve the song well. Lust to Love continues the dramatics with a pounding drum and powerful melody with backing vocals. This is definitely a song where you can really tell how much they inspired Madonna—specifically Like a Prayer, with its pop/rock sound. This Town is similar to Tonite, but with a lot more diverse of a sonic palette. It’s very dynamic, with a perfectly-placed instrumental segment. And then, of course, you have We Got the Beat. This song is so fun and perfect to place right after a handful of more dramatic songs. I also love that it sort of gave the album its title. The next few songs add some emotion, alternating between extremely fun and upbeat to heartbroken and reflective. Even during the latter, however, nothing is ever slow. The ending doesn’t feel much like an ending, but that’s a good thing. It continues the upbeat feeling right up until the end, tempting you to listen once more. I have a lot of respect for what this album did for women in rock. While the Runaways and Joan Jett pioneered women in hard rock and showed that women had a space in traditionally male music and culture, this album made a space for combining traditional femininity and pop styles with punk, as well as helping to create a space that not only accepted women, but actually put them and their art front and center. Without this album, we likely wouldn’t have had Bikini Kill and the riot grrrl movement, or even female grunge bands such as Hole, L7, and Babes in Toyland. Even much of the fashion of the riot grrrl and kinderwh*re movements could be traced back to this album/band, with feminine clothes being introduced to rock. And it goes beyond rock and women in rock—you wouldn’t have Madonna without them, Green Day wouldn’t be the same without the influence of this album, and much of New Wave wouldn’t be the same. Recap: Favorite songs: We Got the Beat, How Much More, This Town Least favorite songs: N/A Comparisons/similar albums: Reject All American, The Runaways, Dookie, Live Through This, Celebrity Skin, Like a Prayer, Bricks are Heavy, Fontanelle, Pottymouth, Heaven on Earth Ranking: 4/5
wtf?!?!?! i'd never heard of this band besides their hit we got the beat which i never fully listened to before, so it's shocking to me how much i'm liking it! great summer album i can see myself singing this in a bikini while tanning. someone called it boring and i can see that, but as a pop / punk lover i can tell the difference between generic boring pop songs and great catchy songs with different melodies. also, 1st girl band who wrote their own songs to have a number 1 album on billboard! amazing! i'll probably have this album on in the background as i do my chores this weekend, it's so fun and easy to listen to!
Another to go on my list for great debuts. Fun, high energy, well done all the way from start to finish. All good songs.
Not heard the album before and a sound of the time. Will definitely listen again
Pure fun!
Unexpected banger
Good fun, enjoyable.
Wall to wall bangers
Very good!
It’s just fun
A Great Day at the Waterpark. FOUR STARS
Solid '90s alternative to cover a slow afternoon
Enjoying this! I’ve previously had a fairly neutral feeling about the Go-Go’s, mostly only knowing the two singles from this album. Finding this fun! Fav tracks: Lust to Love, You Can’t Walk in Your Sleep, and Can’t Stop the World.
A banger of a high four. I might revisit.
Never heard any of this before but very good and clearly very influential as I could hear lots of others bands in this.
Kicks ass. Bunch of great tracks.
I'm glad I got this on a Friday, because this album has absolute Friday vibes. The songs aren't just fun & upbeat, they're pretty darn good too. Hooks for days!
Clean and bright punky pop
Super fun album. One of the few on this list that I can say is too short. 4/5
Honestly really good album. I had no strong feelings about the singles I knew before listening, but the album is good and has more depth than I'd expect. 3.5/5
Ba najs
Den här var cool
Härlig typ av musik!
Great 80s pop
Really fun album. I recognized the hits, and the rest of the songs were good at least through the first half. Really liked "Lust To Love"
Enjoyed this more than I expected. Easy listening, and has aged surprisingly well for a early 80's pop album.
Great band, poppy punk
A very fun album of upbeat poppy rock songs. I don't think I listened to a ton of The Go-Gos but this is a great album and it makes me want to hear more. Obviously "Our Lips Are Sealed" is a classic but I also very much enjoyed "Lust to Love" and "We Got the Beat"
Familiar with the hits on this album but had never gone further than that. It's a good album, I don't recall much else sounding like this in 1981, certainly not from an all-female group. Superior power pop riding atop a jangle guitar riff wave. Much to like.
A lot more moodier/ darker than I expected. Vocals and music felt a bit more alternative than pop. The band was great but that bassist was amazing!
Very nice record. The overall feeling of the album is very upbeat. We got the Beat is of course the big hit and makes me feel pretty happy overall when hearing it. Just short of a perfect score. 4/5
Nice engaging pop!
"Beauty and the Beat" is a very good Pop/Rock album that radiates with energy, delivering a collection of strong tunes and melodies. The record captures a vibrant, "sound of summer" quality, characterized by excellent lead vocals and tight harmonies. It is a thoroughly enjoyable and foot-tappingly good listen from start to finish. (Rating - 4/5). Key Highlights: Standout tracks that define the album's brilliance include: "Our Lips Are Sealed," "We Got the Beat," and "Automatic." Side one 1 "Our Lips Are Sealed" (5/5) 2 "How Much More" (4/5) 3 "Tonite" (3/5) 4 "Lust to Love" (4/5) 5 "This Town" (4/5) Side two 6 "We Got the Beat" (5/5) 7 "Fading Fast" (4/5) 8 "Automatic" (5/5) 9 "You Can't Walk in Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep)" (4/5) 10 "Skidmarks on My Heart" (3/5) 11 "Can't Stop the World" (4/5) Total - 45 Average - 4.09 161/1001 90/161 albums reviewed were new to me.
Nettes Album, hat mich auf meinem Weg zur Arbeit gut unterhalten.
Catchy, hat Spaß gemacht.
Fun new wave perfection - a little repetitive but a lot of fun.
Good album, fun sound
Not every song is a hit but it’s classic 80’s. They’re good musicians and I enjoy their music.
short and sweet pop princess hours makes me want to put on my silver doc martens and a tea length party dress and dance it out this album definitely plays in the record shop from pretty in pink super fun seems ahead of it's time that this was early 80s girl power
Very, very cool 👌
Super fun record, def going in the mix for just fun background jammers. Surf rocky, fun melody, they really know how to lead into a good chorus.
Enjoyed. Great, Blondie-esque tone to the whole album. Totally surprised to find it's not just some generic poppy nonsense, but something with genuine, slightly punky life to it.
It’d be lower if it was any longer
Pretty good for a debut album. Simple guitar-driven record that is a time capsule of the music scene at the time.
I liked this one. The surf guitar with their distinct vocals was a winning combination for me.
Obviously familiar with their hits and like them well enough but turns out the whole album is bangin
Loved this! Pure pop punk perfection, and every component was just tight - vocals to harmonies to the guitars to the rhythm section. I can definitely see the influence on bands like Green Day. I didn’t get a chance to look into the lyrical content, but all the songs felt they’d fit very well onto a Clueless/10 Things - type soundtrack.
Mjög hresst, svoldið Blondie-esque, sem er frábært.
Immediately the first song hits and that 80s vibe takes over. Every song is a banger. You could hear any of these on any 80s tv show/movie/ or video game. The beats, vocals, flow, all perfection. I was pleased with this listen.
A pretty good debut album and a good mixture of new wave and pop
Best Song: Our Lips are Sealed This is both fun and nostalgic. Not something I would listen to often but also not something I would turn off. 4/5.
I loved this. Clearly influenced bands like Best Coast, and could have been made 10 years ago.
A great early 80s power pop record that is strong from start to finish. I had really only heard the hits off this album ("Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat") so it was good to hear the whole thing. Belinda Carlisle has the perfect voice for this music and the whole band and songwriting is great. Just an enjoyable listen from start to finish.
I knew that We Got The Beat was a great song, but this whole thing is just an excellent, punchy, high energy New Wave record. Thoroughly enjoyed and was entertained by the whole thing, and I cant believe its their debut, the band sounds so cohesive.
Joyful and engaging music. Not really my kind of style and sound so only 4, but I almost feel guilty for not rating it 5 for the sake of effort alone.
Just uncomplicated and fun
Classic part of New Wave. Fun times in music
Awesome post punk pop debut album. Trailblazer band with some classic songs. Fun and well put together.
Kinda like the Monkees, but personally one finds Belinda Carlisle a lot sexier than Davy Jones. Early 80s were a mini-golden age for this sort of pop (oh bliss to be alive in that dawn), even for those acts aiming to modernize 50s hooks and vibes. And certainly this has more heft than much of today's disposable, (hyper)pop. That Greil Marcus loved it is both surprising and excellent, speaking volumes about the quality pop of this era lifting all boats (including allegedly lightweight ones like this) and offering ample fodder to anyone considering this a guilty pleasure (as one does) or embarrassed about liking it even a bit (as one is). And wouldn't it have been better for everyone if punk bands had learned to play their instruments so well?
Me ha gustado muchísimo, que chulooo.. Ahora quiero oirme el resto que tienen, ya lo hare. 2025-10-26.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. My favourite song in this album Lust to Love. Glad to have found this and that i could give it a listen 🎶
Great pop record.
A new one for me, and only my second all-female band on the list, at 106 albums in. The first was TLC, and this was much more enjoyable than that! This is a clear pop/punk album and sounds like it was one of the first examples of this. Fun listen and I think I would enjoy it more with more familiarity. 8/10
Just wonderful, wondrous girlie poppy punk rock at it's finest. Love the drums, love the melodies & songwriting. Keep it rocking girls!
Y estas? Zarpado new wave. 8/10
Great beats, fun music, and Belinda Carlisle's beautiful voice? Sign me up! I'd only heard Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got The Beat before, both great songs. The rest of the songs keep up that energy. Lust To Love was a lot of fun. Fading Fast had great music. I really loved Automatic. Skidmarks On My Heard was pretty good, but I just kept imagining poop marks instead of what was obviously meant to be tire marks. Fun album! Best song: Our Lips Are Sealed
what a delight. absolutely loved it!!
Had heard the big hits before (aka: Our Lips are Sealed), but think their deeper cuts were more impressive. To me, this album is 80’s LA. Would I listen to again? Sure
Crazy guitar, good sound, very era.
Poppig, very 80s and somehow reminds me of Abba. Gute Laune Musik. Never heard if 'We got the Beat' and don't think it's the best song on the album. I much orefered 'Lust for Love' for example. The first half of the album sounded quite samey. But after 'Automatic' the sound changed a bit.
Good listen, they really have the beat.
Highlight songs: Our Lips Are Sealed How Much More We Got the Beat Fading Fast You Can't Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep) Skidmarks On My Heart
Excellent power pop. This was pretty revolutionary when it came out, and it stands up well today.
This album is a timeless bop
A great album and an enjoyable listen. Our Lips Are Sealed is the standout track for me, but Tonite and We Got The Beat are full of confidence and attitude. Belinda Carlisle's voice suits this music better than the middle of the road pop she was singing a few years later and the whole thing sounds like they were having a lot of fun. A few filler tracks towards the end, but altogether an above average album.
Yllättävän raikas ja menevä kasaripoppislevy!
Gogos produce new wave and radio classics that typify the 80s so well. They got the beat!
Boy, did I love this band when I was in high school. Saw them live whenever they played at Merriweather Post Pavilion in MD. A little bubblegum pop for sure, but I contend there's something more to this. Not quite in 5 territory, but the hits alone are worth the listen, and there are others on here that are pretty damn good. I recommend watching the documentary from 2020. Gina Schock (drummer) is worth the price of admission all on her own.
I think I like this album more because of the documentary on them rather than the tunes. I have to bump them a Star because it’s The Go-Go’s!
This takes me instantly back to 4th grade when every girl in my class was singing these songs (and the ones from Vacation). At the time I liked the singles but didn’t think too much of it, I was 10. Anyway, this is an excellent album of new wave pop, the singles are absolutely killer and there are several strong album tracks. A few duds but overall, this is very good. I wonder what would have happened if they hadn’t hit it so big on this album, would they have lasted longer and stayed on the new wave track? We’ll never know, but this album is a tantalizing tease of what could have been.
“Beauty and the Beat” is an album that was MADE for summer. Driven by the bass line, it evokes days on the beach in surf and sand, as well as warm summer nights with darker songs such as “Lust to Love” and “Automatic”. The two biggest singles — “Our Lips are Sealed” and “We Got the Beat” — helped to lock in the California new wave sound for the 80s in a way that no other band quite could. If this album isn’t playing at your next summer BBQ or trip to the beach, you’re missing out!
I wanna be cool and edgy and say that this album is lame. But it isn't. It's fun and sounds great. I'm a bit upset that I wrote it off in my mind even before I hit play: "The Go-Go's, ugh what a drag this is going to be on a Monday". The songs area good in general. The vocals are good, the instruments are good. Solid album.
Post-punk sound, really cool alt-rock vibe. Great melodies, very eighties, driving bass. Really enjoyed this one, seems like a great precursor for some later 80s alt. Sleater-Kinney esque, garage-rock/punk/post-punk. Really like it.
The Go-Go's are proof that rock music doesn't have to be rough around the edges. Their polished sound gave them a pop appeal that was fitting for commercialization and movie soundtracks. But beyond the classic hits like We Got the Beat, The Go-Go's are pretty damn punk. Within the bubbly nature of the tracks are a surf rock attitude that you can't help but dance to. There's plenty of variety in this album, with not every track being bright and sparkly. The girls play around with their timing and harmonies to give a different tone throughout. I found the bass lines would truly define the energy of each song which is something that's usually not easy for me to notice. With a short lived career as a band, albums like this are easy to see why The Go-Go's are a name that have stuck around for decades.
3.5 / 5 A little too poppy for my taste, but still a solid punky-pop album that broke barriers. Like a more radio-friendly Slits. A few tracks in here I will come back to.
Like a great '60s garage band with Roni and the Ronettes singing. Ballads? We don't need no stinking ballads! Only note: I wish the cheesy 80s synth on our lips are sealed was replaced with a 1960s sounding keyboard/organ. Did they borrow the Attractions drummer for this? #beastmode
This one is great, solid 4. So many bops, really good upbeat pop music, their voices are great too. Reminds me of CHVRCHES a bit, like a new wave predecessor
This album surprised me - much better than I had expected. It appears I have underestimated the Go-Go's. Nice tight pop songs that I will come back to. This Town, and Tonite were my favourite tracks
Would give a 3.5 but feeling generous
What a fun band and sound with some familiar hits. Fading Fast was a new and appreciated song for me.
Wow! Great early pop punk tunes here, a genre that will command a lot of attention in the decades to come. Great grooves, nice song writing, solid pace/sound changes. I’m surprised by this!
Such a fun album and trip down memory lane in the 80s.
Beautiful bouncy 80's pop. I especially liked the big hits, plus "This Town", which I had heard before, but I don't think it got a lot of radio play. My Rating: 4/5
These ladies are a lot of fun. Some songs are five stars and some are four stars but every song is a banger
This was much better than I expected. My vague memories of this band are of a just another purveyor of 80s garbage. But, no! This wasn't the over-produced, rubbery synth treacle of memory. Real guitar sounds catchy tunes, and some memorable lyrics and song titles (Skid Marks on my Heart, anyone?). I ended up enjoying this quite a bit. I'm actually adding this to my playlist.
this probably deserves a 3, but it gives me happy nostalgic feelings so bumped up a notch
What a very fine record.
This definitely reminded me of my childhood. Truly ahead of their time and their own style of pop punk.
Fun and enjoyable album to listen to for a good mood.
4.0 - Very Good
didnt like this as much as i expected to. its got some solid tracks but a few really felt like filler which is sad on a 35 minute album. still pretty enjoyable overall.
I've lived this album for 44 years. Still a great sounding representation of those beautiful early 80s, birth of New Wave era.
Having next to no knowledge of The Go-Go's, this album makes them seem like a Pop powerhouse. This is such an incredibly fun album filled to the brim with high energy earworms, it's like the album itself is invoking the vibes of the 60's while being very much an album of the 80's. My two favorites here are definitely Our Lips are Sealed and We Got The Beat. Our Lips are Sealed gives small glimmers of Post-Punk while also being so damn bubbly and catchy, while We Got The Beat is like the raw manifestation of the teen fun and teen spirit in a song. While these songs are all great, the only nitpick I have is how many of these songs don't leave that much of a lasting impression on me. Still, I can't complain about a fun record like this one!
Ça s'écoute très bien. Et j'adore le titre de l'album. 4/5
Довольно динамичный попсовенький альбом
Undeniably good songwriting but I can’t help but wonder what this album would have been like if they had actually kept the punk influences from the Los Angeles scene they had sprung forth from. I saw them a couple of months after this record was released opening for the Fleshtones in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom and the show was wild. Payolas opened the fiesta. They were energetic and fun and these songs played live struck differently than on the record. The record is meticulously crafted in its production. After listening to this album for the first time since the 80s, I’m struck by how good the non-singles are on this record. For me, This Town and Skidmarks on My Heart are the two best songs on the LP. And that’s why this record is enduring- the hit singles We Got The Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed are indelibly etched in the pop pantheon but the rest of the record might be better.
I wasn't really interested in listening to this album, and it was a pleasant surprise. Very catchy and hooky pop rock and a solid album all the way through. I don't know if I'll regularly seek it out, but an enjoyable listen.
I NEVER would have listened to this whole album without the 1001 list, and I really would have been missing out. I was surprised to hear that everything on it was as good as the two singles everyone knows. Everything on the else on the album is so good, they could have all been singles too. That sort of consistency isn't something you see very often. Maybe the only album on this list so far that I wished was longer. It's not very often I hear a great album on this list I don't already have, but this is one. Adding to my collection today ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
love it, Radiohead will always be recognizable. Hadn't seen the anime music video, was cool!
This is good. I was expecting more synthy new wave, but this is almost proto pop punk. Theres melodies that remind me of Husker Du and Green Day, and Lust for Love kinda reminds me of a My Chemical Romance song that I can't place. Probably not gonna be in my rotation, but I'd listen to it again. Consistently enjoyable all the way through
I have a feeling I might really like this one, based on how I feel about the singles from this record. I used to joke that if I ever started a band I would want it to sound like the Go-go's...and I said this without ever having listened to a whole album through. After the first two songs that weren't "Our Lips are Sealed" so far I think I was really on some shit when I used to say that. lol. Overall, I like it quite a bit. I think I'm gonna add it to my collection. I would really like to be in a band like this.
Not a bad song on this album
Surprisingly actually enjoyed this change of scene from my usual listening.
Fun album
Good
Better than expected
Monumental album!
Unfortunately more pop than punk but still a fine album.
This was everywhere back in 1981, and I was too "cool" to appreciate it at all at the time. I'm sure I rolled my eyes if it was played at any college parties I was at, and wanted more edgy music played. Listening this morning and I realized this is exactly the kind of power pop I enjoy from other bands, but because they had no hits it was ok for me to listen to. You can't help but smile listening to this, and bopping your head to the beat. A very fun listen and I'm very glad it's on the list.
This felt like a flashback to 50s and 60s beach music. Fun and upbeat.
Starts strong. Fun pop rock album by this all-girl group.
Super fun poppy punkw as a good lil ride
Love it. Infectious and groovy. Maybe it goes on too long, like there weren't enough ideas for a full album. But the energy is undeniable and unabated.
Well I’ll be damned! I did not expect to click with this album so hard. The upbeat, jangly, pop sound won me over hard. I even caught a bit of the Smiths in the style of these songs. I could talk totally envision Jonny Marr writing some of these guitar hooks. Maybe I’m crazy with that take. I also have to applaud the consistency and conciseness of these tracks. I don’t have a particular favourite, ( I don’t even think the two singles were necessarily the best this album had to offer) but I had a joyous time bopping to these songs and plan to revisit them again. Solid 4! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Loved listening to this album! Go girl bands🥰
This was a lot of fun! Catchy, full of pop and a bit of attitude. Favorite tracks were Our Lips Are Sealed, The Town, We Got The Beat, and Skidmarks On My Heart
scale: 1 - skipping if heard it again/actually skipped it 2- meh can be skipped/reaches point to skip 3 -nothing wrong/easy listen/not seeking out 4 - would listen to again 5 - must listen our lips are sealed - 4 how much more - 3 tonite - 3 lust to love - 4 this town - 3 we got the beat - 5 fading fast - 4 automatic - 3 you cant walk in your sleep - 3 skidmarks on my heart - 4 cant stop the world - 4
Very good record, but lacks a couple of my favorite Go Go's sounds (Vacation and Head Over Heals).
Much better than I expected. I already really liked their big hits from this album, which would've given it a 3.....now it's easily a 4
7/10 On my first listen of this, I was almost ready to write it off as something a bit lightweight and lacking in substance, but on listening to it a second time, there is actually a lot more quality at play than one would initially assume. There’s some really interesting songwriting across the album, with plenty of structural variation, instrumental breakdowns, and even a little bit of fun with time signatures at one point. But it’s all presented with this bubble-gum pop-rock sheen that gives it a more mainstream friendly tone. I can hear big punk rock echoes across the album, and quite a few of these tracks wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a Ramones record if they had a bit more grit to the production. It’s all pretty good stuff. I suspect there are a whole bunch of bands that have been influenced by The Go-Go’s, from the Madonna and The B-52’s to Green Day and No Doubt. I’d probably almost call this proto-pop-punk in the way it takes a lot of the structure and energy of punk and twists it with a softer, more user-friendly aesthetic. I would prefer there to be a little more grit to this, as well as a little more prominence of the low end, particularly as some of the bass lines are great, but lacking a bit of body, which would really elevate it to my ears, but it’s still pretty bloody good and interesting for a record from 1981. There are a couple of lulls in places, but overall, it’s got a lot more quality than one might think, it’s really great fun, and fells like a genuine gateway album to what was to follow. Our Lips Are Sealed - This is a decent little pop-rock song. It’s got a good, chugging backbeat that gives it good drive, and there’s a good bounce to things. It doesn’t quite deliver on the hook that I was looking for, but it’s a decent little opener. How Much More - This has got great pace and a really good pop riff. It doesn’t do anything vastly interesting, but it’s a chirpy little track that does everything it sets out to. I bet this kind of thing is great fun live, there’s just so much pep to it that it’s almost impossible not to move to it. Tonite - This is a lot like an old school punk song, but presented as a girl group pop song. Yeah, it looses a bit of the grit because of that, but it also gives it an extra sheen of production and bounce that makes it interesting. Good fun. Lust To Love - The tempo for this compared to the previous tracks makes it drag a little bit. The sparse vocal led section in the middle is great though, and I do like the way the backing vocals play around the lead. This Town - Ooooh. Chuck in a bar of two why don’t you? Fantastic to hear in a pop record. This is really good. There are a lot of ideas and it never hangs around. I can’t help but wish for a little bit more grit and weight to it, but the songwriting is really fantastic. We Got The Beat - This is also good, but I fell like it could do with being a tad faster and it would be great. There’s a bit less variation to this and it leans a bit more on the surf rock motifs, but it’s not bad at all. Fading Fast - This is a bit more pedestrian. It’s just a bit more by the numbers and it doesn’t manage to land on a particularly satisfying hook. It just doesn’t quite have the substance or musical invention of some of the other tracks. Drags on a bit much too Automatic - This is a bit plodding, but there is some sonic interest in there. While I’m not a massive fan of the track, I do appreciate the attempt to do something a bit different, it just doesn’t quite connect with me. You Can’t Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can’t Sleep) - Back to something with a bit more drive to it. I like the bass line and it’s super bouncy. It’s also pretty silly, but in a really good way. There’s actually quite a bit more nuance and quality to the songwriting than one would necessarily credit it for, and it’s another one that I can’t help but move to. It’s just good fun. Skidmarks On My Heart - More good fun. It’s got a good chorus, it’s got some interesting breakdown sections and it’s got that toe-tapping pace that they seem so good at. Another great slice of fun. Can’t Stop The World - Another chirpy, punky pop number. The way the verses chug along, building up to a song-along chorus is pretty good. It’s not the most musically inventive song, but it’s more fun and another toe-tapper.
Had a very upbeat vibe but some very similar songs. Still enjoyed as a whole though. Good album cover too. Specific rating - 3.8 Fav song- we got the beat Least fav- can’t stop the world
Very fun, perfect vibe of music to put on while you're cleaning up- less helpful for editing a paper. Some of the songs were a bit similar but I never found myself getting bored of the album. Favourite song: You Can't Walk In Your Sleep (If You Can't Sleep) Least: Fading Fast
Still sounds fun, original and not dated.
Loved it, was not expecting so much dad rock. Album hit banger after banger at the start, i felt the middle of the album didn't have quite the same highs, but ended with a bang, Can't Stop the World was an awesome song. can't believe this came out two years before R.E.M's Murmer.
Fun, poppy and the perfect length so there's no chance of it wearing out its welcome.
que DIVAS. e ainda deram uma carreira pra hilary duff (eu amo o cover).
This is pretty much everything I want in an album. Tightly written upbeat pop/punk with a natural sounding recording. Short, sweet, and kick-ass fun.
Very fun
If this is new wave, maybe I don’t hate new wave as much as I thought.
7/10 punk without grievance is weird, but I like it. 8-8-2025
Instrumentals are very happy. Lyrics r pretty basic. But would listen again and especially as a pick me up or during the summer/ roadtrip!
Ten times more listenable than the previous album on this list, Madonna’s 7th album. Yes, its simple, refreshing, straightforward pop but not at all pretentious of over produced. I wouldn't listen to it again, not being 22 anymore ( the age I was when it was released) but yes, 4
Fun and interesting pop punk. The first half is great and it fades slightly on the second.
This is so much fun. Sometimes pop sometimes new wave but with the infectious spirit of punk in the song writing style. One to consider buying on vinyl. Very enjoyable 4/5
I’ve been searching for an album like this for ages. The musical diet I am fed by “the agreed canon” is very male focused, so its refreshing to get such a single heavy, uplifting new wave record that is also feminine. It’s astonishing that Beauty and the Beat is from 1981 as it sounds like acts that come from well after them. You have jangle pop guitars that I’d associate with acts from the mid-80s; harsher post-punk moments which add a nice bite to a wholesome overall production. Then, the thing that shines through this is the highly charged, overbright, overbold power pop which harkens back to the soul girl groups of a couple of decades earlier. It makes me feel so positive. I am looking forward to getting to know The Go-Go’s better!
Solid 4 and a great find!
Fun album. Would have probably had a bigger impact at the time. In retrospect, I can see how important it was for those that followed. We Got The Beat is probably my favourite track
An iconic band that helped create the sons of the 80’s. It’s a fun album and that’s all it was ever meant to be.
Shockingly enjoyed this more than I should have, poppy, pinky with some great hooks and beats.
Fun, upbeat, punchy 80s girl band - highly enjoyed! There were a few songs that were a bit redundant, which was common back then.
Great album.
1981 classic - brings back great memories of junior high and Skateland in Bismarck, ND. Also have always loved Belinda Carlisle's voice and the skill of the rest of the band.
sehr cool so zum hören im zug, gemütlich aber trotzdem belebt
Just an unpretentious fun album. Knew several of the tracks.
Great sound from the first all girl band. Loved it.
Classic
Aye, the 5 star rating system strikes again. This grew on me over a few listens, and I got used to Belinda Carlisle’s voice which was a bit irritating at first. Some nice punchy wee tunes on here which I enjoyed but don’t find particularly memorable. 3.5
Albums like this are why I keep going (almost 600 in). 100% unexpected. Solid 4 stars.
Rating this one higher for its influence more than for my personal enjoyment of it. Overall I felt a little lost realizing I had moved to the next track, but it was fun, and almost campy in sound. The bops went-went hard and those I cranked up the volume. It’s so 80s, but this soon into the decade, the Go-Gos are iconic
Rating higher for its influence. Know some of these songs through their covers more than the originals (Hilary Duff’s Our Lips Are Sealed for example, lol), so don’t have as much nostalgia for these. We Got The Beat is amazing, but can’t give 5 stars when Skidmarks On My Heart exists (horrible).
Surprisingly goes harder than I thought it would, it's not entirely bubblegum. Sort of proto-pop-punk and overall enjoyable. More nuance than I anticipated
This is pure fun. The lyrics might not stand out, but the energy and sound are fantastic. Catchy, upbeat, and just a blast to listen to from start to finish.
Actually pretty good
Fantastic 80's pop! So many hits on that album, a fun listen
Surprisingly good
Starts with a bang, but not as exciting from there. Still, it's enjoyable and I did quite like Skidmarks On My Heart...I will listen to this occasionally for the remainder of my years. No doubt
would be an easy 5 if Vacation was on this album too
"Beauty and the Beat" is the debut album by California new wave band the Go-Go's. New wave, pop rock, post-punk and surf rock are the Wiki-listed genres. Yeah, I don't know about the surf rock but everything else fits. The album was critically acclaimed and noted as one of the cornerstones of American new wave. The bandmembers included Belinda Carlisle (lead vocals), Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Gina Schock (drums), Kathy Valentine (bass, backing vocals) and Jane Wiedlin (rhythm guitar, backing vocals). The album reached #1 in the US and stayed there for six weeks. Jane Wieldlin and the Specials' and Fun Boy Three's Terry Hall wrote "Our Lips Are Sealed" about their relationship and reaction to it. The drum beat, the rhythm guitar, the keyboard melody, the bass and Belinda Carlisle's vocals come in. That's how you start a song. a great bass sound, a poppy dance beat and catchy. When you say an early 80's song, this one pops to mind immediately. Fun Boy Three also recorded a version which is nowhere near the level of this version. They speed it up on "How Much More." Nice backing vocals and a catchy guitar chorus. A great deeper cut. She wants to be that girl whose shoulder that guy's head is on. "This Town" has a darker tone with a low-key guitar. It's a tongue-in-cheek song about how glamorous the LA/Hollywood life is and what's really underneath it. Side two kicks off with their other big hit "We Got the Beat." A rumbling beat and layers of guitars and bass. Another catchy song. The third single, "Automatic," is slower. An eerie guitar and an ominous bass line. Caffey rips off a guitar solo. Emotionless relationship? Emotionless sex? I don't know but the musical tone fits the stark single-phrase lyrics. The background of the Go-Go members was punk and that comes through listening to this entire album as they do a great job fusing punk/post-punk with their pop sensibilities. In a lot of the songs, the guitars have a darker post-punk edge and tone. The producers, Richard Gottehrer and Rob Freeman, did a nice job keeping the bass loud in the mix which really drives the music. The lyrics cover relationships, dancing, partying and Los Angeles. This is a really good album and more than just the two songs that you've heard. A solid recommendation.
Enjoyable 80s yeah yeah yeahs
I've only ever heard We Got the Beat from this record, and while it is a great song, honestly it might be one of the weaker tracks. The three songs before it, Tonite, Lust to Love, and This Town are a pretty damn good run of three, with their post-punk urgency. You can also hear how influential they are, drawing a direct line to Kathleen Hanna projects like Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, and Sleater-Kinney. Dunno if I'm surprised by this album being so good, but I definitely wasn't expecting a slight post-punk vibe. Plus, I'm a sucker for some good bass, and Kathy Valentine is providing that in spades. But all the members are at peak form here. Side note: Aside from We Got the Beat, I've mostly only known them from Jane Wiedlin being on VH1 in the 2000s constantly? Don't remember much other than I think I had a crush on her, but it's weird I remember that, haha.
Beauty and the Beat is a fun, energetic album from start to finish. There’s not a bad track on the album; it’s catchy, upbeat, and confidently delivered. That said, it’s not really my kind of vibe. I can appreciate the charm and songwriting, but it doesn’t fully click with me personally. Still, a strong and undeniably enjoyable debut.
Decent
This had some classics and some songs that probably deserved to be classics. Honestly, this surprised me because I have never considered listening to The Go-Go's. These are the types of albums that I'm hoping to find more of in the 1001 list.
This albums is great! The Go-Go’s have the garage rock grime, they have the peppy pop, they’ve got the surf-rock vibes. Great energy from start to finish. Listening to this brought back good memories of a buddy I played hockey with. Anytime we won, he would insist on playing The Go-Go’s, Vaction in the locker room. Sadly, Kurtis passed away early this year so The Go-Go’s will always have a spot in my heart. RIP Kurty. 4 stars
Just a great production, with smooth lyrics.
Probably the best girls band after The Runaways. Very dynamic and full of young energy.
This was really pretty good. Go Go’s were huge when I was 10ish. I knew all the hits, but can’t say I ever listened to the whole album. Great early 80s California new wave.
Было на удивление хорошо, только я не слушаю женские группы толком
This album was decent, I thought it was quite unique and interesting as it wasn't like much other music I have listened to before. It was also interesting listening to an all Female band which I have never really listened to before.
Super fun
super super fun....can hit on some surprisingly effective punky edges even more than a lot of other new wave, and flirting with moments of darkness as well, but mostly just sweet and kickass Ramones In The Early 80s For The Girls, emphasizing the bubblegum roots with gleaming glittery Teeth. the aesthetic focus on california is also distinguishing i think, if not for total uniqueness than certainly for the quality of what it delivers. just wall to wall great songs...we got the beat made me light up in recognition immediately, but i dont know from what, surely it was in a movie montage or something!
Good times to the max!
Fun! Short! Excellent qualities especially 600+ albums in!
Really fun punk album masquerading as pop genius.
Fantastic 80’s album. Great energy throughout the whole album.
Bought this when it came out. Liked it a lot then and still do. A nice debut with two monster hits that are still fun to sing along with on the radio. 3.5 rounded up to 4 because the documentary was very good.
I knew the two hits, obviously. And I kinda expected the rest of the album to be poppy filler. It’s so much more interesting than that. I loved “Tonite” and every other new-to-me song was solid. The two hits are undeniably fun but they are not what I love about this album, which is its punk insouciance. (Although I do think “we got the beat” benefits from the context of the whole album, which seems to draw out elements of that song I hadn’t focused on before.) I thought about 5 but I think it’s merely a solid 4. Also I think if I had bought this album in 1981 and then Belinda Carlisle made “heaven is a place on earth” six years later, I would have rioted.
77/100.
So poppy and upbeat
83% Best: Our Lips Are Sealed; Tonite; We Got The Beat; Fading Fast Must-Hear? Sure
Uno bueno que no conocía
Me ha gustado muchísimo y no esperaba nada de él.
A fun little collection of bops. Automatic was my favorite. Nothing life changing but it wasn't trying to be.
Fun and catchy with plenty of hooks. Better than most of the new wave crap we've had to suffer through.
Think I'm a Go-Go's fan
It would be easy to write off this band as the token easy pop girl group inclusion, and I has that impression too. Until Lust to Love reached my ears. I went back to start with refreshed, unbiased ears, and was really impressed. Both the playing, songwriting and production is on point. And the run from track 2-7 is not easily beaten.
Fun 80’s party/dance music. Good to see a successful girl band
I like it! Female punk rock, lively for sure. Listened again and thought of the Ramones - female version. May be a stretch, but still a fun listen.
Awesome debut album
Fun album, really enjoyed it! Just don't think there's really a bad song on it. One of two albums since doing this that I've actually added to my music too. REMINDS ME OF 13 GOING ON 30 😭 (one of their songs features on the soundtrack) Highlights: Our Lips Are Sealed, This Town, We Got the Beat
A fun album! Another one I think I’d enjoy more with more listens Favourites: Our Lips are Sealed, This Town
Had not heard alot of the songs on this album. Fun listen
This album is so much fun, the vocals and the harmonies are perfect. An incredible debut album! I’m not sure if any other Go-Go’s albums are on the 1001 list but I sure hope so! Fav songs: This Town, We Got The Beat, Automatic (this song was different from the others but I think it came at the right time in the album and broke it up a bit)
Great album. Wish they were still together
Fun, short and sweet. Didn't love every track but enough good tracks and it didn't overstay its welcome.
A solid, fun album. If not something I’ll come back to a lot, it’s an undeniably fun and well made album with two massive hits.
Really solid album with some good songs. Catchy and energetic. I like this one.
Solid 4/4.5, We Got the Beat is overshadowed by quite a bit here
So good! The two singles are unstoppable and "Skidmarks on My Heart" was a mixtape staple back then. I just read that Belinda Carlisle's tenure as the drummer for the Germs was cut short because she had mono - the most adorable LA punk anecdote ever!
Everybody knows the twin hits, but the strength of this album lay in its deep cuts — the icy new wave of "Automatic," the surf rock of 'Skidmarks On My Heart," the uptempo post-punk of "Tonite," the wistful "Lust to Love," etc. I find most of them more interesting than the hits, but there's really not a bad tune to be found. The band is peppy, energetic and fully in command. I'm left trying to remember why I ever parted with my copy of this LP back in the day.
I think I'm going to go on a deep Go-Go’s listening spree, heck yeah this stuff.
"Our Lips Our Sealed" is one of the all-time greatest opening-tracks-on-a-debut-album. And that bass line. Just perfect. This entire album is bouncy, happy pop-punk perfection.
The songs are all good, but they all kind of run together. Not much tempo/style change. But still, solid album.
Wow this was fun. The two singles - My Lips Are Sealed & We Got The Beat - were the highlights but there basically wasn't a bad song. Early 80s New Wave girl group, super high energy, almost a surf rock vibe going on. Loved it
I'm a sucker for poppy rock. The songs definitely start to blend together. But We Got The Beat is such a bop. Couple of weird songs (looking at you Automatic). Skidmarks on My Heart is the unexpected fave.
bangers bops love it 4.5 stars
Like
Fun and energetic
Didn’t know Belinda Carlisle was a punk
A nice change of pace (still within the rock genre of course). A varied album, a bit repetitive in lyrics but the emotion packed into them makes up for it. Very fun, 4.5 stars rounded. down. Close to 5, but lacking some of the emotional oomph for this genre - More rock :( at least it's more like pop-rock - Actually, this isn't like the rock we've heard. More like 'band music'. I'm enjoying it! - Easily 3 stars, probably needs a deeper listen to earn more - On second listen, I like it more! A little too simple, but short enough to get away with it. I would listen to this again - Honestly, lyrically reminds me of Sabrina Carpenter. Big breakups, hookups culture, dumb boys, etc
Nice listen. Fun beats.
surprised how much I liked it. I expected bland bubblegum pop but I think I had this misconception because of their femme vocals (and because We Got the Beat and Our Lips are Sealed have been used in women-focused commercials and covered by tween Disney stars). In particular on the song This Town if you replace the lead and backing vocals, it could easily be a Green Day song; YCWIYS reminds me of The Matches' Papercut Skin. The name Skidmarks on My Heart is definitely not bubblegum pop lol. Love the drama and enunciation on Automatic (a la shiver with antici..PAtion). Fav songs: This Town, Fading Fast, Automatic, You Can't Sleep Walk if You Can't Sleep (bonus: Head Over Heels which played I didn't realize the album ended)
While the Go-Gos may seem quaint or "cute", they were anything but, and the enduring quality of their music speaks to that.
This is fun and pleasant, with great songwriting. I feel like Sleater-Kinney must have listened to this a lot.
Fun bops & fun album cover
Only listened to 'We Got the Beat' before, but I've been missing out on the full album! What a bop!
Girly summer bops. What's not to like?
Fun, upbeat, pop-punk. Really enjoyable. Favorites: How Much More, Tonite, This Town
How Much More of this is there? I was Fading Fast until I heard this. I have the Lust to Love this album.
Classic 80s band!!!!
Better than expected
Album 781 of 1089 The Go-Go's - Beauty And The Beat (1981) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Always loved the hits and the rest isn't bad, either. Good album.
Sophomore year in college this album came out. Every girl I knew loved this album and it was a great conversation starter and usually paid off. Brought back good memories listening today.
Fun! Vey 80s! Go ladies! Not the most musically complex or wowing album, but definitely deserves a spot on this list of must-hear albums.
Long time listener, first time caller.. I've heard the singles a bazillion times and expected the rest of the album to be carried by those tunes. I was pleasantly surprised with this album
That was surprisingly fun!
