Getting this the day after Oasis's debut album puts things into perspective. This just sounds messy.
The voice is so British lmaooo I've never actually heard Suede's music but I know who they/he was?! Like I heard of the name before. Was an interesting listen for sure. Moving sounded like it was recorded underneath my bed Fave Songs: Animal Nitrate Pantomime Horse Metal Mickey
Kinda forgettable brit pop
This album, and you can’t blame them, started off with the best song. Sadly, for me it then meandered and never really found the magic again. Ultimately, an uncompelling cruise through a 90s take on a resurrected sound.
>>>>>>>>>> It was solid, but probably won't revisit it. <<<<<<<<<<
Don't like the voice, same little trick over and over again.
Wow. 2 Suede albums in a month? That's a lot of Suede for me.
I don't know why, but their songs and their Bowie infused sound just don't appeal me. I have a hard time with britpop and glam rock, so when they're both together...
Melancholy britpop of the bland variety.
Before I begin I would like to say that Brett Anderson's voice makes me want to shoot him and myself. That aside I will try to stay objective. -1 star for good-quality instrumentals. I feel like the rest of the band should chuck Brett and do their own thing because they're pretty great musicians. -1 star for a good mix throughout the album. It's a pretty nice variety of sounds. -0 stars for innovation. This one is pretty obvious. -Let's say half-star for lyrics. He does address weighty topics, but his lyrics aren't exactly genius. -Then 0 for catchiness again, which also has to do with his stupid voice. Overall, 2.5. Let's say 2.
This album really reminds me of the excessiveness of glam rock imo, like there's more to alt rock than just really over the top production, not my cup of tea
really fun guitar work but vocals that grate by the end
I thought this was going to be a little more...progressive? aggressive? based on the blurb and the cover and a song being called "Animal Nitrate" but wound up feeling let down. There was less energy here than I expected and a lot of the tracks really bled together for me. Maybe if I were someone who could parse lyrics on a first listen there would be some good lyricism in here but I unfortunately am not one of those people so whatever it is, it's lost on me.
Nice
One star for So Young and one for The Drowners
Embodiment of the two star album. It just exists. Doesn’t annoy. I would never choose to listen to it.
I dismissed 90s Britpop as "boring music" when it was happening, but maybe it's time for a critical reappraisal? I'm a wiser dude than I was 30 years ago (I hope). However, this fist of what I suspect will be many albums from that whole scene hasn't convinced me that I was wrong.
This was a big deal when it came out, and I didn't get it then. I know this came out a few years before Oasis but I can't help but think that Oasis is the much better band of this type and there's no need for this to be on the list.
The closing track here was decent. The rest was unmemorable, and the vocals are a bit wearing after a while.
i’m really not into this genre of music, the creamy whiny voices with the extra reverb, the big epic wits in the songs, it all just seems royal cheesy.
Pretty chilled out album that I have never heard before. I enjoyed listening to it but none of the songs really stood out to me. That isn't necessarily bad though if you want some chill music that isn't overbearing.
Depeche mode meets Radio head
This, the smiths, and all that has never really been my vibe. Once again, respect the artistry - but not something i'd pick out at a record shop and spin at home in my free time. But respect to the project - i'm going to give everything the listen it deserves
god this is going to make me defend britpop one of the more interesting modern genres, as it is not categorized by sound or music styles. there’s a line to be drawn when evaluating britpop and it think it boils down to how you are using your influences. successful britpop bands sound new and interesting. but they don’t reinvent the wheel (oasis legitimately ripped off many of their influence) BUTTT they were exciting. another great example is Justine leaving suede to form elastica suede falls on the side (to me) of sounding boring and derivative. this doesn’t make me want more suede. I just want to listen to Bowie now. I’m very glad Justine got out and did some cool stuff with that elastica album. this one just doesn’t hit
I wanna know what the hoes rating this 5/5 think of actually decent music. It’s so damn whiny, bland, and poorly written.
Time and time again, this just isn’t my style of music. It’s a specific English depression that is too foreign for me to make any connection. The whiny council flats vocals sound like the 80s, before my time. Washed out guitar tone blends together to sound exactly the same in every song. These albums show up a lot on this database, I get the British flair, but time and time again I can’t do it. Came into this one with a complete open mind but it ain’t for me.
Like the guitar work, but disliking the operatic voicings. The song structure is beguiling but those reverby vocals are constantly irritating me. Shame. Actually had to stop listening after four or five tracks.
Like Animal Nitrate, The Drowners. singing voice not my favorite. would never go out of my way to listen to them, and i'd probably skip if it came on. 2/5
british no
belangloses rock/pop-geheul .. das soll britpop eingeläutet haben? verstehe ich nicht.
Not for me
Fine britpop? Nothing special other than his voice.
Not bad. I like the tones and atmosphere. The singer has a pretty good voice. 2.5
The most Britpop album on this list. Mixed like mud, yammering about pub life as if I give a fuck, and being quirky with guitars over ‘60s mod revivalism to little success. There’s a good band in Suede somewhere, and I can see it in some of the melody lines and riffs here and there, particularly when stripped back like on the closer, but it never lasts long. Still better than Oasis to my ears, somehow, but I don’t mean that as a compliment.
It's like a movie that should work but doesn't. All of the pieces are in place, but for some reason it comes out a mess. Interesting sound. Guitar player has chops. But none of the songs grip me. No ear worms, the harmonic progressions sound calculated, and there's a weird incoherence between the musical instincts of (1) whoever wrote the backing tracks and (2) whoever wrote the vocal melodies. It all adds up to an album that sounds fine but that doesn't work.
Short songs with some catchy moments. Nothing memorable for me though. 2.5
Can we chill with the britpop?
Fine, 2.
The voice breaking vocal style annoyed me. Other than that, it could have been just decent, but it strays into boring territory more than I'd like. Close to 3/5, but not quite.
Fine, forgettable background music for me.
4/10. It was ok. They had an okay style of story telling but wasn’t really my thing.
There were parts of each song that I did enjoy, but I also didn't enjoy the vocals in every song either. Too mopey/ghoulish. Not awful but nothing stands out either. Meh. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
Bleh
When this album came out, I wasn't into the single that was released on my college radio station (The Drowners). I was also the only one in my real close group of friends who listened to alternative music so I never heard this whole album. Putting it on today for the first time I heard the first 2 songs and I thought oh man I might have missed out on a album I might have really liked. Then I kept listening. It lost me. Songs got similar and tired. Some songs were just too boring. Too much whining for my liking. Morrissey didn't even whine this much. Weird turn of events, my 2 favorite songs on the album are The Drowners and Metal Mickey.
Didn’t like it, didn’t dislike it. It just played. 2.5
I get that this list was made by Brits but wow I never expected to hear THIS many people sing in an English accent when I started this list. A lot of these britpop albums really aren't bad at all, but I've been served quite a few of them at this point, and a lot of them just feel really unremarkable.
Nah, annoying voice. Nothing noteworthy
Proto-Britpop with strangled-sounding vocals, long fuzzy guitar chords, sloppy crashing percussion.
Suede’s self-titled debut album has its moments, but overall, it didn’t resonate with me as much as I’d hoped. Fans of the genre might appreciate its style, but for me, it fell short of being memorable or groundbreaking. A 2 might be slightly harsh but I can’t see myself revisiting it
The rating on this one is tough. When thinking about it being on a "1001 albums to listen to before you die" list, it solidly deserves a 1. Compared to all the music I've heard in my life, it would get a 3, because it's incredibly average. Nothing really grabs at me. So I'll meet in the middle and give it a 2. Also, the comparisons to The Smiths or Bowie almost made me give it a 1. That's honestly insulting and an incredibly surface level analysis. I guess the singer kinda sounds like Bowie, and the guitar has a similarish tone to The Smiths? Sometimes, for both of those. That's about it
If you’re like me and wanted a record to engage in your confirmation bias that 90’s britpop was largely overrated and melodramatic, boy do I have the album for you. Much like beans on toast, you can only hope this is a product of a bygone, more troubling time
Album was okay. Didn’t have much wrong, but wasn’t that interesting either. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
Didn't get how this is anything special
This album was nothing terrible but did nothing for this guy's musical interest. Moving on to the next with no interest in revisiting. 2
Nothing special.
Surprised by this, some of it I sort of liked and some I sort of didn't. Yet it also seemed very much of a muchness. I really don't know how to score this, it feels better than a 2 but I don't think it's worth a 3. If it was out of 10 I would definitely give it 3, which would make it a solidly in the 2 zone out of 5. But.........
Rock and always rock
The music, musicianship, and musicians are great. Unfortunately, the lead singer suffers from a disease where he believes his purposely cracking voice and end-of-sentence yelps add to the music.
I probably would have liked this when it came out, but today it does not interest me much.
Uninspiring
I suffered through the singing. 1.5 Stars. Sorry, Suede.
Damn, what a controversial album cover for the 90s. This was ok, has a lot of elements of other music I like, but nothing super outstanding. 2* Damnit, I had it on shuffle and not even sure where it started or ended.
Esta lista tiene muchos discos de new wave y no me gusta.
Big yawn.
Not awful but not my tunes
Generic britpop from the 90s
Yksi iki-inhokeista. Levy sattui osumaan aamulenkillä kuunneltavaksi ja teki mieli heittäytyä liikkuvan auton eteen. VMP.
Found this extremely boring. Some of the retro guitar tones were alright but not digging the vox.
Menettelee toistaiseksi. 2,5
I like Metal Mickey well enough, and much of the music. But the lead singers voice gets on my nerves.
Wasn't on my radar during the Brit Pop era. Fine but nothing really stood out. There are other bands of this time and era that i'd rather listen to.
A couple of decent singles, but, so.much.filler.
Another dud this week. Just your average Britpop album you heard 50 times already. The singles are bland and forgettable. The only highlight is "Animal Lover". It was fresh in 1993 but it has since gone off. 2 stars for "Self Titled".
nix besonderes
i hate this one oh i HATE this one huh
Some parts of this reminded me of Rush, but more British and less "Proggy." The rest of it didn't hold my attention very long.
Yawn.
You'd think I would love the band that "kicked off Britpop" but I do not enjoy Suede. Annoying vocals. The music borders on interesting, but never quite gets there.
This was bland. Music, lyrics, production.
Brass in pocket lekker hoor Maar voor de rest niet echt mijn ding
Meh. I thought I would have liked this as it was during my formative years. I now know why I am not familiar with them.
Bland, at best
Late 80’s angsty raves. Pretty solid. Nothing popped for me though.
Music was alright but the voice and lyrics... Not it.
Bored to tears. Dull Brit-pop, every song is the fucking same. The vocals are so reverbed and washed out that I just get lost, like the reading a boring book lost, where you read 5 pages and remember nothing.
I hate it, but I'm fine with it also? It's complicated.
Very easy listening, but didn't really stand out
Didn't feel like it. Probably higher if I really gave it a chance, but allas
Nothing interesting here except first track.
Um no
Don’t need to listen to it again.
#179. I kept waiting for the good part, but it just kinda never happened. 2/5: unfulfilling.
Not as smooth
didnt totally dig it. Slow and non engaging. 2
Britpop in its infancy. I'm sure it's an incredibly influential record but it's not for me.
Is this the worst album on this list? No. Is it at least mildly interesting or enjoyable? Also no. My drive to work would have been less boring had I listened to nothing at all. “This album has music on it” is about the best I can say.
Hmmmm, first track is ok. Second track ‘Animal Nitrate’ is huge. Rest of album could not be more definitive of the expression “meh”.
Can see why this is beloved within its genre. It's just not my genre.
Not my jam. I simply don’t like this kind of music. Really I just don’t like this kind of singing but the music was OK at times. I didn’t enjoy it though overall. 2
1. young - 0 2. animal nitrate - 0 3. not dead - 1 4. moving - 1 5. pantomime - 1.5 6. drouunerz - 0 7. pillz - 1 8. breakdouun - 0 9. metal mickey - 0 10. animal lover - 0 11. nezt life - 2 12. he'z dead - 1.5 13. pigz fly - 1
... I tried. Maybe if O heard when it came out, I would appreciate it more, but does nothing to me. And it's a double album? .. I cherry-picked some of the songs other said check out, and they all sounded the same. No way near comparison to Cure or Smiths...
I stand by my first Suede analysis, whiney and boring.
Couldn't stand the vocals. Music was good though.
Nostalgíu fílingur, góðir spretting en svolítið þreytandi
like fine but pretty dull tbh
The Britpop voice. Ugh. It’s so whiny to the point that it’s grating. The music itself is great. The band is talented and writes good riffs and melodies. But I cannot get past the Britpop voice. The entire thing also seems to have a sense of self-importance about it. This isn’t for me. I didn’t get it and I wanted the singer to stop singing the entire time.
This didn't do much for me.
Animal Nitrate is a great single, rest of the album wasn’t doing it for me.
Yeah, it was fine. Not something I will particularly remember, but not bad.
meh
I'm not sure how I felt about this one. Was not a fan of most of it, but had a few that I liked here and there.
What was the buzz about? Bad singing and BORing.
Some good songs (Animal Lover), but the psychedelic ambience didn't do it for me. 2/5.
Couple ok songs but way too much whinny singing.
Ugh.
Parallels to The Smiths. I did enjoy the vocal and guitar harmonies
Nothing I can point out as bad, just felt boring
Not bad, but not for me.
This album definitely flew by, and not in a good way. It was over before I knew it and I left feeling really unimpressed. During some songs, like "Sleeping Pills", I even just wanted it to be over and to skip to the next track. The chorus hit me and it has a nice statement chord (a major 3 chord) but it then immediately went back to weird apathetic 80's worship. Maybe it's because this came out in 1993 and there's some innate feeling of it being "behind"? Just sort of dated and living in a place of familiarity.
Unremarkable. Nearly experimental in its manic switching of forms. A two is probably fair.
Boring. Boring. They are trying so hard to be artistic
meh
britpop
Interesting shoegaze album with no playlist additions. Didn't hate it, but also didn't particularly enjoy it and I found it a little boring and saw a theme of track similarity throughout. No one song really stood out for me to add to a playlist.
Unlike their second album, "Dog Man Star" which boasts an abrasive, dark iteration of glam rock, "Suede" is a much less interesting and more generic take on britpop.
A bit boring
Not really my thing
Tad too dramatic for my taste
This album was fine, but unremarkable. There's nothing about it that makes me think I'll listen to it again. If I did, I wouldn't be opposed or anything.
Meh
Band sounds cool but his voice
I used to like Suede, I don't know why, man was this boring.
Wispy and one note, you get the feeling that they are taking themselves too seriously
Very bleh....did not intrigue me
this was in the background, and i forgot about it. not sure if that is good or bad
second suede album on this list and i have yet to discover what makes them interesting. it's fine, but bland, music. there's some more of a punk sound than i anticipated, but it wasn't enough to save suede, at all. a 2 because i'm generous, and their music was... actually music, but flat.
Every now and then, you enjoy this album, then you remember Brett Anderson, and you're back to square one
Another album another Englishmen who can't sing.
This is the second band recently who was supposedly the first band to do britpop. Hmm. Not necessarily this band's fault but I'm getting a little sick of that sound. They have some good qualities, especially the catchy guitar riffs, but I was worn down pretty quickly by the vocals and the sameness of the sound.
I used to think I liked Britpop. Then I started 1001...
Heavier fragments vere enjoyable, can't say it about the vocals. Nothing to write home about. 2,5/5
This is a no from me, dog.
I listened to it. Some things I enjoyed, but the vast majority of it didn't click with me. Sorry guys.
Probably a 2.5 but I doubt I'll listen again
extremely bipolar. still boring. fav songs: shes not dead, pantomime horse, sleeping pills, breakdown, the next life.
A bit boring to be honest but the album is fine (2.5/5)
Literally can remember none of this and I listened yesterday, actually remember the singers voice being annoying let’s call it a 2
ad
-i do like the groove of this -i really like animal nitrate -it has a little bit of an 80’s feel to it -it has lots of pop moments but lots of more indie moments -its a little boring for me personally -each song only stands out a little bit more than the others -i also probably wouldn’t listen to these songs again, so its gonna be a 2 star for me
Can’t deal with his voice. Hasn’t aged well
Meh niet voor mij
mediocre britpop
Ok
For the most part, I've been really enjoying the diversity of genres and regions represented on this list. But there is an overabundance of mediocre Britpop. This was a big meh for me.
Cat: Guy’s voice is kinda whiny but I like the music. Some of this actually gets quite cool. I liked moving. The guy is still shrieking. AJ: Hate the vocals and lyrics. Musically, pretty cool rock and roll. Oasis they are not. Not for me, guy’s annoying. Couldn’t finish it.
Not one memorable song
While it has definitively more verve in the instrumentals than its compatriots, this LP falls squarely into the Britpop bucket I’ve grown so tired of throughout the project. I did find myself bopping my head to a few tracks, but otherwise the vocals were forgettable at best and the overall feel tiring at worst.
Decent Brit rock
Didn't love the songs where it sounded too new wave-y like the B-52s but the songs where it sounded Bowie-ish I was into. I was digging the jangle-y guitars too. Overall, a miss for me though.
some ok songs/stuff but, overall, not my thing.
Remarkably unremarkable. I forgot the sound immediately after listening.
Wildly inappropriate cover art.
Couple Ok songs. 2.5
Decent BritPop, again with the whiny voice from the lead singer though. The best songs were the ones where the guitar was allowed to rock out a little bit.
Boring. The last song is definitely the worst and leaves a terrible aftertaste
This was just……there.
Okay, don't even remember it a week later.
I can see why some would like this album but Im not one of them.
The London Suede is how spotify lists the band. It's fine. 90s brit pop.
Ok, didn't do much for me
niet speciaal, na een tijd wat saai
painted people is good but this album isnt that much my style like a 2/5
Not sure how to feel about this one. I like some tracks but I’m now wowed by it. Funnily enough, it sounded better when I left the cinema after watching The Whale.
“I wazzz baaawwnnn a paaaantmione haaaaaaaaaaawwwwsss.” No thanks.
This really did not capture my interest at all.
Meh
I didn't dislike the songwriting at all, although instrumentation was a little subpar. Those aspects together get 3 stars from me. What really kept this album from being enjoyable, however, are the horrible vocals.
An okay Brit pop album. I will say that the album art is pretty weird, who kisses like that. The music wasn’t that weird but more so boring. It seemed similar to the smiths but with less character or douchebaggery. Overall it was pretty forgettable. 5.2/10
It was ok, kind of boring. Nothing really stood out to me
It was something. Forgettable
не моё
meh 2 stars
Not really a fan of British hyper pop and this album was not able to change my mind. Only voting this for the cultural impact it had and I like the guitars.
Ei huono, mutta vähän taustalle jäi. Täytyy ottaa uus kierros joskus. 2/5
Hmh, tää ei oo minusta ihan parhaiten aikaa kestäneitä britpop-klassikoita. Vaikka tykkäänkin genrestä keskimäärin paljon. Näiden seuraava levy on muistaakseni parempi (toivottavasti listalla).
Not for me. Sounds like alot of early 90’s punkpop. Reminds me if Stone Roses. I might have liked it if I knew it from the 90’s but I don’t.
meh, not terrible, but wouldn't go out of my way to listen.
Decent britpop
The 80's and 90's came together and made this catastrophe, yeesh.
This album was just ok. The songs mostly all sound the same and the nasally voice of the singer gets on my nerves after a while.
The album is best described as rock, I guess. I had never heard of this band or any of the songs previously. It really isn't that good but it isn't awful. No need to revisit.
Kinda trailed off at the end
I didn’t find any of the songs too memorable… maybe it’s just that I don’t like British rock
This is very Bowie-esque. It's not bad at all, easy to listen to with a good mix of raw energy and times where it slows down. I could easily place this album in the early 90;s though and parts of the Bowie sound take away from the experience rather than help here. I enjoyed it for what it was but I don't think I'll be back here much at all.
I've listened to this album three times now, and it's just... forgettable. There's nothing that makes it stand out. The three things I noted: 1) I dug "Metal Mickey" a little more than the other track 2) "Moving" has a familiar drum intro that I've heard at least in one or two other songs 3) "Sleeping Pills" - the first time I heard it, I thought he sang "You're a water sign, I'm an asshole..." you know what? That would have worked better. Besides that, it was just... unremarkable. And I tried to pick stuff out of it, I really did. But there was nothing I could pull out of it. They seemed to try too hard to be glam ("Pantomime Horse," wtf?) I've given this album way too much of my time. Moving on.
Never heard of them. Early 90s Britpop apparently. - So Young – Find the vocals a bit offputting. The jarring jumps to falsetto and back down to a lower tone aren’t appealing. The bridge is quite nice though, and the transition back to the chorus is great. The core song though is just middling rock without much to distinguish it besides the caterwauled vocals. - Animal Nitrate – The intro is a solid guitar riff. It’s about drug use, sexual encounters, and domestic abuse. Not my thing. - She’s Not Dead – Details the speaker’s aunt committing suicide with her lover by carbon monoxide inhalation. The verses are good, but the chorus returns to the off-key, cracking voice vocals that are just really off-putting. - Moving – Driving drum and guitar intro creates the best instrumentation moments so far. The vocals are still annoying but this one gets my blood pumping. Unfortunately, the chorus is just awful. The edge and frenetic nature are the only place so far where the yowling singing works. The effects in the chorus are, in contrast, probably the worst point of the album so far. A shame that this includes both the highlights and lowlights of the album for me. - Pantomime Horse – A decent power ballad, curving for my distaste for the vocals. The ending does communicate sincere emotion, though it’s too repetitive for me. - The Drowners – Nice drum intro. A solid tune, though weirdly the way the singer delivers the line “you’re taking me over” just really gives me a negative reaction. Probably the most complete song of the record, though not one I’ll save still. - Sleeping Pills – Another ballad that gives a prominent focus to the vocals, which it’s already been well established that I dislike. - Breakdown – Oh hey, another power ballad. This album didn’t really need a 6 minute power ballad, but the lyrics are more constrained on this one, and it’s a better song for it than many of their earlier ones. Still don’t really like it, but it’s merely mediocre, not unpleasant. Definitely wears out its welcome though. - Metal Mickey – Another of the less annoying vocal performances, but similar to Breakdown, even with more listenable vocals, it’s just mediocre. Decent guitar work, but falls just short of making me want to save it. Also, it’s apparently about a strip club, which makes me like it even less. - Animal Lover – Another “animal” song lol. Way too repetitive. It’s an ok song on the whole though. - The Next Life – Final ballad to finish things off. A better band would have made this song great, because the lyrics and tone are solid, but they just don’t have the gravitas and power to pull it off. I stand by “caterwauling” as the best description of much of the vocals. Definitely not to my taste, and it makes the whole album difficult for me to listen to. The instrumentation has some good parts, but nothing that blows me away. Lyrical themes similarly have some interesting ideas but it never really wows or connects with me. The album is (according to the band) about “sex and depression in equal measure”. Not the kind of thing that appeals to me. Other than that, it’s just decent straightforward rock. Not offensive or technically bad, just forgettable. There’s enough good that it’s well above one star, but I’m waffling between 2 & 3, and that’s not a great sign. The fact that I didn’t find a single song I wanted to save leaves me with it as a 2.
I wanted this to be over so bad.
Bilao.
Eh
I really don't like most of the songs here, pretty bland record fav tracks: Pantomime horse, The drowners, The next life least fav tracks: Moving, Breakdown, Animal lover
Nothing special really
"animal nitrate" is the coolest sounding title i've heard
Can't see what the hype is. There were a few okay riffs but not particularly exciting or interesting.
I just can't get on with Suede - a few catchy songs, but there's just something that grates about them for me, and I struggle to get past it.
Oh shocker, it’s another British indie album. I’m good, count me out. I listened to it and nearly fell asleep from the repetition and mumbling.
Oof that opening yelp really sets a tone. Found this British Invasion exhausting. I know there’s a suede song out there I like, but it wasn’t here.
Not for me! Musicianship seems to be there and I'm sure someone likes it.
Never liked 'em. Still don't.
Nothing I could really get into. It had a sort of David Bowie vibe to it, but not as catchy as most of what he's done. Not offensive, though.
Meh
Not for me
I think I liked Pantomime Horse a little bit but otherwise every song sounded pretty much the same. This is a whole genre of music that I can't really understand how anyone likes.
I didn't give this very much of my time or attention to be honest, but there's not loads of good I can find in here for me. Nothing grabbed me or interested me, kind of bland not really my thing
I had to do a presentation on Suede in GCSE music. I remember not really liking them then and I still don't. It's not terrible it's just not great. Like a less good Smiths.
Eipä nappaa
There may be too much british rock on this album list for my taste lol I like the track So Young but the whiny singing is too much for me
I do not understand the fuss for this album.
just average. there were two songs where i said, they are ripping off Champagne Supernova and High and Dry. Then I found out this album came out first. Maybe more influential than i realized.
This was ok, but nothing really that interesting.
The album art is as good as the last Suede album we reviewed as we have moved from a photo of a guy's arse to some lebanese smooching. Musically, I think a little less of this one than I did of the first Suede offering. There are a few OK tunes but not much to get excited about.
Meh
Oof, three stinkers in a row. The guitar in this album is pretty good, but it's another new wave Smiths/Cure copycat. Pretentious, whiny, bummer music. Let's give me something more upbeat tomorrow, ok algorithm?
Meh
Ehhh I was not feeling this today....
similar to the last one if felt (the the's infected)
dross. animal nitrate is good the rest of this is gash.
It was okay. No recognized songs
I don't even know what to call this music but it's not really for me. I appreciate the griminess to it but...nah.
uhh... 2strs? skipped a few songs. props for the semi-creepy art tho
Hin und wieder ganz spannende Gitarrenteile dabei, aber jeder Song kliegt voll beliebig, und pointless. Ich druck außerdem den Sänger ned durch.
Never got the fuss.
Boring Brit-pop with some redeeming factors. Not enough spark or ambition to the album.
First listen. Seems ok, but after listening all day none of the songs are sticking with me. Maybe next time. 2/5.
Not on Spotify.
This albums was very run of the mill. Amazing production, the singer’s voice sucked to start but he kind if grew on me by the end. Im not a huge fan of when they put the tunnel effect on the vocals Notable songs: Pantomime Horse The Drowners Animal lover Hated songs: The next life He’s dead
Not my style
Some decent singles, but his voice is still way too annoying.
alt rock good background music not personally my taste
More listenable than I thought, typifies 90s Brit pop at the time however the substance of the music relies heavily on the vocalist. You take that away and its fairly bland.
DAS Album des Jahres 1993 also…Großartige Stilblüte aus dem Rolling Stone: "There is an undercurrent of doomsday urgency in Anderson's feigned languor, tartly echoed in Bernard Butler's corrosive guitar work.“ Weniger kiffen, Meister. Für mich wenig Licht, aber viel Schatten. Brit-Pop ist allgemein überschätzt.
Whiny, with some ok songs.
I honestly don't know what to make of this. It's just an average band playing their songs... nothing special about it. Somewhat like something out of a rock competition. 5/10.
Eh.
Not my cup of tea
This alternative British rock album was the debut of the band Suede, and was highly anticipated as well as expertly crafted. It's beautiful melodies and lyrics caress the listener with feelings of ecstasy, but also feelings of sadness with the low parts.
Pretty decent.
Kind of listenable to but, as I didn't like the singer's voice...
hmm..
Bueno, sin más...
Meh. I've already forgotten it.
All very at one level, wasn't much to differentiate the songs
Don't think I was that fussed on suede
Samtlige sange lød som noget man kendte uden helt at være det
Some good songs but far too long and his voice is awful.
Far beyond the very relative interest their music has for me, it is really the nasal voice, with its horrible vibrato and falsetto, that finishes the job and makes the whole thing unbearable.
Not my style
it's okay
Tiresome
Blick aufs Cover: Nein!
Another band I've danced around but never been that fussed by. I see why. The hits are solid, but the whiny, self important drone that permeates the rest of the album is a grind. It's all very wet and noodley, but not in a hot, spicy, invigorating and tasty way like ramen or pho.
British
Being lesbian is my superpower tracer core
buns
Generic. Boring. Lifeless. I actually hated this album. I think I just hate Brit pop.
what a slog, what a bore
Apparently I prefer Velvet.
Fucking BORINGGG every song is the sameeeee shut up
Absolutely not. Not at all, I think that I might have rated Dog Man Star more than it should have gotten. This though is earning it's 1 star. Made it through the first 3 songs and that was a chore when the 4th one started I had to NOPE the fuck out.
If I were to write for a sketch comedy show, and the skit was on a couple on the worst date imaginable, this is the band that would play on a stage in the background to punch home how terrible everything is. In short, I hated it.
Don't do this to me again. You already rolled me with one Suede album. I ain't falling for that shit again.
Nice
I don't like his voice. Soft with no substance.
Que nadaqueveriento
Strange music. Not impressed.
exhausting album, exhausting to think or talk about britpop anymore. this is maybe the worst britpop album on the list which is saying a lot. who cares
This project has given me the chance to listen to genres outside my comfort zone. Country (Dolly Parton - good), prog rock(Jethro Tull - not good). Indie is a genre I am familar with and Suede are a poor example. Beloved by the NME and men with Hoxton fins, but tedious and overblown. You can get away being dramatic if you have the talent (see The Smiths), but a good guitarest on there own cannot carry the weight pretentions of this album
Why is this even on the list?
No. 43 I had never heard of this band, and this record made zero impression on me.
I remember being talked into this bullshit record back in the mid 1990s. I resented it then and I resent it now. I remember thinking at the time that it sounded like a rehash of the worst impulses of David Bowie and The Smiths. After listening to it again today, I still think that. Everything I have heard from this band seems so derivative. An album made entirely of fillers. This list has way too many well recorded and produced middling British rehash rock albums on here . I would have included albums by artists that in hindsight added more threads to the sonic tapestry rather than those that just revisit previous highs. You know what would have been a better selection for 1993? Sting's TEN SUMMONER TALES, which expanded the tapestry of AOR, with excellent lyrics, and top notch performances. Hell, "Seven Days" from that album has become a standard bearer for drummers to show mastery of groove on the instrument. Or how about Depeche Mode SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION? Tool's UNDERTOW? U2's ZOOROPA? Primus' PORK SODA? I just thought of these off the top of my head without any serious effort and they are far more original sounding albums that easily could have been picked for 1993 instead of this piss. Imagine if Dimery had actually thought about it a bit more deeply? After listening to 666 albums on this list, I am beginning to lose faith that this list even understands what albums are ACTUALLY great and not merely the editor's favorites friends and bands that he wish were more recognized. It seems Dimery doesn't understand that the Brit Pop and Rock movement of the 90s was pretty much just all hype with no real meat on the bone.
I didn’t enjoy this. Why does his voice crack? It sounds like he’s going through puberty or can’t sing at all!
Trash.
english. sad. whiney.
Really whiny vocals would be forgivable if they weren't paired with forgettable, boring music.

Technically nothing wrong. Everything in tune. Impressive or groundbreaking - NO. Just another britpop album.
Not quite
I wasn’t a fan of Suede at the time. The singing that could easily be that of a choir boy who had yet to reach puberty. The effete styling. The fact that they all looked like their hair could be done with either a good wash or a lot less Brylcream. The desperate nod and winks to Morrisey. I’m still not a fan now. I’ve only managed to get half way through. The lack of variation in the songs hasn’t managed to shift my pre-listening view that I don’t like Suede.
Ya know how some people just shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a mic? Yeah. That.
This all sounded the same. Felt like an eternity to get through this.
Not my cup of tea
I admit a never heard of this band before and after listening to this album I know why. There is nothing new to detect on it.
meh
Just Bad, the voice on this person is horrendous. I sure hope I get some better suggestions soon. I keep getting crap suggestions.
Now I remember why I never liked that then very much.
