Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Melodic Britpop. Animal Nitrate is a classic.

Decent album, really just more ok Britpop that good ole Bobby Dimery is obsessed with. This does fit on the better end of the britpop he put on here. The influences from The Smiths are very apparent, probably why I like this more than most Britpop. I liked it, but nothing stood out to me from it.

Found myself listening a lot to Brett Anderson’s vocal squeak on every note. It takes some getting used to. Cool fuzz guitar work and chord parts. Animal Nitrate is a banger.

Decent brit rock from the 90s,but I feel like other bands did it better.

Cool Grungey sound. Nothing too special though

Some ok alternative rock / brit-pop. I listened to it yesterday and I honestly can't remember anything about it. Did hate it though

Its okej.

Always got time for the singles on this

Recontra brit con buenos temas pero sin ninguna épica.

It was ok

I didn’t enjoy this album as much as their album Dog Man Star, but would listen again

Quite enjoyable surprisingly

S’ok

This album hits in my sweet spot of music enjoyment and I'll tell you I've never heard one song from this so-called monster hit. Growing up in the twi-state area and listening to some of the biggest US pop, rock and alternative radio stations this hasn't caught my ear. I get there that a list in this style needs to pick up some things that I'm unfamiliar with, but for crying out loud, can we please slow down on the 80s/90s BritPop? And slapping on a descriptor like 'they sound like a modern Bowie' doesn't help. Bowie sounded like a modern Bowie. Suede's eponymous debut LP sounds like the boring Brit-pop that made the Gallagher brothers think they should be pop stars. 3/5.

3, warmed up to it a bit

I’ve never heard of this band before. I wasn’t drawn in, but I appreciate the new wave vibe

Sleeping Pills stands out for this band that has echoes of Bowie. The Next Life though is the best song on this album for me. Overall, echoes of Bowie on this album with a somewhat stronger English sound. This album doesn't outperform expectations, but does not underwhelm either. It's worthy even if I didn't find any tracks to add to my favs.

This album has some really great songs on it, solid indie guitar rock. The only thing is that the singer has a style I don’t really like, a weird ‘squeaky’ voice. Charismatic, but not something I enjoy. The songs are good though. 7/10

Second time listening to this album, the first time in last year's go at the 1001 albums challenge. Not horrible not sure what I thought on the first listen, but definitely not something I would go to.

I love Animal Nitrate. However, a whole album of the more raw Suede is a bit much. As the production values rose, so did my enjoyment of their music. This punky, Bowie on a budget style doesn't do it quite as much for me. Not bad, deserving of its place, just doesn't do much for me - where Coming Up does, for example. Can't be anything to do with Bernard Butler, as Yes is one of the greatest songs ever written.

aighhtttt

Average but with some memorable moments

Rating: 6/10

I liked bits and pieces of this but I can see why this hasn't survived in the public imagination in the same way that Blur and Oasis have.

I'd only heard "Metal Mickey", a good song that felt a little niche. The rest of the album had a fair bit of range to it and was actually pretty good. Brett Anderson's screechy vocals grate on me after a whole album though.

Didn't like Suede in the 90s, still don't like them in the 20s

Weird. Kinda cool. 6/10

Listened to it a lot in the past, but not for many years. This re-listen has been revelatory in that I now wish I could hear a version of this album without the singer sounding like he's in a cave or the unnecessary organ. Maybe having zero breathing space matches the album thematically, but it all seems too much. This time I around I think I enjoyed it for the nostalgia more than anything. Also, I don't think I realized what a horrible Bowie impression Anderson was doing. We live, we learn.

Yay more britpop 3

Not bad at all. Some really popular tunes that stand out, but the overall production on their songs always seems a bit tinny.

this is a fine album that I find difficult to make stick. Listened to it several times, can't seem to recall the melodies nor do I find myself curious to put it on again. i am aware of it's huge reputation and alleged importance to the Brit Pop movement so .5 additional stars for that. 3 stars

An old friend, good but not great

6/10 Best song - Animal Nitrate

This was just meh. Not really bad but not good. A solid 3

This is a nostalgia hit, my sister used to love this band.

b-tec smiths

Helt decent. Skulle vilja ha lite mera ös på låtarna...

Enjoyed it, glad I've heard it, didn't feel inspired to listen a second time.

Reminds me too much of The Smiths and I don’t love The Smiths. It’s just ok.

Britpop is a weird genre. It's usually not bad, but often not that great either. An album of songs you'd hear in British media and enjoy but not really think of again once the show is done

Britpop the band. yep, its brit pop alright.

A few classics which I enjoyed, others were a generally okay experience for me

I've really got out of the swing of this. I definitely did listen to this but I remember nothing so going to go with a safe 3

Interesting. Not my first pick, but I didn't hate it.

I enjoyed this album and would happily listen to it again but it didn’t quite make 4*

Enjoyed this. Probably didn't give it the attention in deserved but was good.

An impressive debut by Suede. Among all the Britpop bands, Suede started out the strongest, with this release and their magnum opus Dog Man Star being released before Oasis's What's the Story, Blur's Parklife, and Pulp's Different Class. That being said, I think the strongest aspects of their debut is their aesthetic and sample hits. Several things I mean about that. First of all, Britpop builds itself on British music influences, which are evidently clear here. It's very much rooted in glam rock and baroque pop, many tracks it straight up sounds like he's trying to replicate Morrissey's vocal style. It also takes from shoegaze, with many of the non-singles characterized by slow, fuzzy noise and lofi vocals difficult to make out. Beyond that, I find their songs to be fairly shallow. They're not bad by any means... they're all pretty good, but nothing stands out in the non-singles beyond those fundamental principles. I hate when this happens, but the singles are the highlights of the album, and you can tell without looking them up. "Animal Nitrate" and "The Drowners" are energetic, catchy, with inventive lyrics. It's put the other tracks, especially on the second side, to shame. If I wanted to introduce someone to Suede, I'd only recommend them this album if they were a shoegaze fan, or at least just take the singles. But otherwise, it's a solid effort.

Quite a good listen.

Some great music, more than slightly ruined by Anderson's whining.

3.8 - A nice Britpop album from the genre's heyday. This sounds like a cousin to "The Bends" - perhaps less hooky, less ethereally beautiful and with fewer slap-your-face rockers. Still, I like the dreamy soundscapes on the more downtempo tracks like "She's Not Dead", "Pantomime Horse", "Sleeping Pills."

Gillade!! Riskerar att bli lite monotont ibland men tycker det händer mycket kul i gitarren. Sången känns dock tillgjord till nivån att det nästan blir irriterande efter några låtar?

Interesting classic rock

I didn't mind this but I didn't love it either. Animal nitrate worth a star on its on own. Remainder worth a couple extra.

3/5. Mid. Next album’s better

enjoyed the quirky singing, did not love all the songs, but it piqued my interest.

six outta eight still great

Alright album, but some pretty forgettable songs and the majority do just sound the same. Glad I listened tho!

Didn’t get my interest

Circa 1993, it was impossible to read Q and not have a nuanced, often contradictory opinion about Suede. (NME and Select readers, accustomed to being told what to think, had no opinions worth noting.) On the balance, Suede were not the collective Messiah. But they did have a picture of two lesbians kissing on the cover of their album 30 years ago. That’s one in the eye for the young ‘uns who think that history started in 2010. (Yes, I was the same etc etc) (The full image is actually quite interesting. The artists didn’t give them permission to use it. More trouble than it was worth, she thought.)

26th October 2021 Listened at work in the office on my headphones. Didn't mind it, liked the sort of Smith's/Bowie combo.

hard to find on Spotify but pretty good 3.5

This album is sweet. It's got a classic 80s/90s rock sound that never gets stale. Some of the songs on this record could very well be on my current day playlists that I make. There are definitely some high and low points that make some of the weaker songs stand out just a bit more. One of the big faults of this album that I notice is that some of the hard-hitting songs don't really hit as hard or are just not as noticeable as other tracks on this album. Examples of this are "So Young" and "Moving" - they don't stand out as much compared to the classic "Animal Nitrate" and are are too bland to be compared to "Pantomime Horse" and "Breakdown". Of course, the highlights are highlights for a reason. As far as bangers go, "Animal Nitrate" and "Moving" are killer tracks. And emotions are very apparent on "She's Not Dead" and "Breakdown". The sound across the whole record is not very unique, but it is quite enjoyable. From front-to-back, this record is super fun. It does have some low points which are pretty easily overcome with the high points, but I still think this album is a 7/10.

Solid album. I remember liking the singles when this came out and umming and ahhing over buying the CD - listening to the whole thing in the shop. Didn't buy it though.

Not bad.

Er kwam geen einde aan! Wel prima hoor, maar ik sla er niet van achterover.

Like Radiohead but with more piano. Got better as it went but I’ll probably never listen to this again.

This one brought back memories of a club I used to go to in the late 90s - Pure Pop at Club 77. The DJs would play Suede all of the time but I never got into the band. I can hear now the glam and Bowie influences.

pretty good, not super-memorable

There's a special place in heaven for animal lovers. Best track: Animal Nitrate

feels like a 90's alt evolution of earlier indie darling music. It's not bad, but doesn't hit me at all.

Better than the last Suede album on this list.

Great guitar.

Хороший большой альбом для своего времени, Даже пару треков понравилось, но их так много, что не всё послушал. Средне.

Definitely have to listen to this album and band more

I really liked it. The singer has a distinctive voice, that I can hear in my head at any time. So Young and Animal Nitrate are blinders, and Sleeping Pills also.

Animal Nitrate is a classic, but the rest of the album doesn't live up to it as much as I would like

Bowie voice in the 70s is present here. Kinda like it, but old, even in the time it was released.

generic britpop. cool guitar sound on some tracks. overall pretty forgettable. animal nitrate is a great track

Strange brit poprock mix from early 90s. Was expecting blur/oasis got weird hybrid thing...didn't hate it, think I would have preferred blur or oasis

I had never heard of Suede. Or the London Suede. But you have to have heard of both to figure anything out? And which reissue or remaster to listen to? Do I have to listen to the bonus disc? The demos? The live versions? Ok, we figured it out. But why have I never heard of Suede? Why did they not get nearly the level of attention that other Britpop bands got (much to the chagrin of one pretentious-ass)? Because I actually liked this album quite a bit. I could definitely see myself listening to Suede again. I will agree that I don't dig the singer's voice at times, which is what is going to keep this album from earning ****. Sometimes - sometimes - I really like the way he uses his voice, with short sudden high notes and quick swings to the lower register. But too often he hits that sweet spot of saccharine Sussex accent that makes pretentious-ass sick to their stomach and disrupts their bowels. All the vocals needed to do was not fuck things up too bad, though, because the instrumentation was the real standout. Super interesting stuff, that I could try to remember how to ramble on in a doomed attempt to make it sound like I know how to talk about music. However, I left writing this until the last minute today and am out of Hershey squirts to give.

I’m stuck between and 3 and 4. I hear things I like and it reminds me of The Smiths. Ultimately, I could definitely listen to this but no song really grabbed me so I guess it gets the 3 rather than the 4.

Had to listen on youtube. Solid English rock. I don't remember much about the album.

Album was solid nothing special

Didn’t have enough time to listen as thoroughly as I’d like but I did like what I heard. Nice mix of Brit pop/alternative

Fantastic gem of an album, though it does start to feel a little samey after the mid way point.

A la The Smiths, Suede apply Dyadic Primacy, the borderline post-punk guitar shapes in constant discussion with Brett Anderson's playfully fey vocals (so playful in fact, that he pushes his whine to the point of annoying before pulling it back to vulnerable) about the main topics here: sexuality and sensuality. The lyrics probably have something to add but one listen isn't enough to pick any out - and anyway, what's going on musically says more than enough. That guitar/voice conversation front and centre means the afterglow atmosphere can work its magic in the background rather than losing everything in its haze.

3/5 Music and composition are alright. The vocals are however not something which catches my interest.

Not bad.

Another lead singer that puts me off the band. I didn’t mind this album, and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. A couple of decent tunes on there...even if his voice does kind of ruin them.

I kinda liked the album. Some songs more than others. It reminded me a lot of other bands, some of which are from the same era or later. Bands who did something similar to Suede, but better than Suede did it. It definitely has a legacy and some influence though. 6.5/10

Dos classic and some other goodies.

Sad adult grungy British business

Indie rock.

Not bad, but also not that good. I can fully understand why the other BritPop bands passed them by.

yet another brit pop band, while good, almost having a bit of a morrisey feel, was just ok (getting tired of typing that).

Actually super cool, need to listen again

A bit too poppy for my taste, but I can't say I hated it. 3 stars

Animal nitrate is so kickass

This was pretty nice. Better than I was expecting. It was smooth and easy to listen to.

Okay album. Started off with some interesting and unique songs but later on got a bit repetitive and boring. No really "bad" songs but also nothing that memorable

It’s was alright!

Interesting album - sort of an alt rock and shoegaze-y mix. Good stuff overall, 3/5.

Better than expected but I do find his voice annoying

I don't think I've ever head them before.

This is pleasant enough, but it isn't really my thing. It was clearly influential on a bunch of 90s music, so I think it's reasonable to say that this album was ahead of its time. It just doesn't do it for me. 3/5

It wasn’t bad but also wasn’t memorable for me.

This was an album from the past for me.

too grungey, they wanted to make me sad too hard and like yo do it organically plss

Really like these guys sound but I think it gets a bit repetitive throughout the album. Still has some bangers on it though

Kind of trance like like Pink Floyd. It make me think of laying around on a blanket at a music festival or founders day.

I didn't realise this wasn't the "cum on feel the noize" band and was thinking "wow, they managed to stay relevant into the 90s" haha. But yeah, not bad for britpop. About as good as I've heard apart from Oasis first 2 albums. 3/5.

Musically this album rocked. Add the vocals to the mix and I wanted to jump off a bridge. Not a great experience, but you can blame the lead singer…or the UK as a whole.

Do you know what is interesting, cool and really enjoyable about this album? ‘Cuz I sure as hell don’t .

Brit Pop is much like British food, flavorless and nothing to go out of your way for.

Alright at points but mainly kind of boring. I've heard better stuff from them.

j’en peux plus du bruit pop 2+/5

This is apparently the first Britpop album....so I know exactly who to blame. I don't love Britpop and this is not helping. You can hear what came after in this. I bet these guys hate Oasis. The Drowners is the best song so far. I wonder if the lead singer gets mad that Thom Yorke sounds like him. Not great.

No me dijo nada

Nothing great even if the singer reminded me of Howard Devoto, but only the voice.

I feel like Britpop is super over-represented on this list.

Its got some nice melodies here and there, but I cannot for the life of me give a glowing review to an album that sounds like so many other British Rock entries on the list. It also borders on annoying more often than not. I suppose this genre isnt for me.

Man, I'm really tiring of these forgettable britpop albums. There's some good guitar work here and there but it sounds like so much other stuff I've heard on this list.

Not sure why but this did nothing for me. Even on the third listen none of the tracks clicked for me.

Why is this on the list. It was completely forgettable.

Not for me. Boring

I had about 300 beers for the weekend leading up to listening this, so I can't really process correctly what was heard

I dunno, a lot of Britpop stuff just rolls right past me and doesn't make any kind of impact. It's fine, it's just not particularly for me, I guess.

Pretty much meh

Me pasó de noche

I really like the guitar work on this album but I don’t really like any of this album at all. It’s weird, very indifferent to most of this but the guitar was really stellar. Everything else is take it or leave it. Animal lover was awful.

Unknown band for me. Not bad. Overall a fair album.

Animal Nitrate is a banger, the other ten versions of it, less so.

Sorry didn’t like it.

It's okay. Cool how the cover art was controversial i suppose.

A few upbeat moments ("Moving" was a highlight), but overall I wasn't into this. This is well-done English alternative rock, but maybe I just have an attraction toward the urgency of stuff from America, and there was no urgency on this album whatsoever.

I had never heard of this band or album before so I went in intentionally not knowing anything about it. Initial listen, I’m not a huge fan. I looked at the wiki for the album and realized this was compared to The Smiths and Bowie, but I didn’t like it nearly as much as those other artists. Oh well. I did listen a second time and enjoyed it better on second listen. But still not quite my thing

already had a song (animal nitrate) pretty peak and first song also fire (so young)but rest of album not for me 2.5/5

2.5 - inoffensive but nothing phenomenal

Seriously Mr Generator. More britpopsters was not on my bingo card today ...or ever.

Nope. I'm done with the wailing British dudes.

Meh, no me gusto la voz pero chance si el estilo

I liked one song (Animal Nitrate)

Not bad. I’d like to give 2.5 stars. I think I’ll like it more with more listens.

I'm seeing reports that this was the "first" Britpop record? So do we have these guys to blame for all of the mediocre Britpop we've had to endure in this list? I kid of course, but this was a pretty tepid and whiny sounding album overall. Started off a tad hot early and kind of just fizzled out. I guess you can say that this group set the table for Britpop to prosper, but better acts definitely followed.

Not my vibe

I’m not a big fan of the lead singers vocals, however I will argue that it sounds fitting in the song Animal Nitrate. Admittedly, I did add that song to my playlist, but I don’t think I’ll be adding more. It’s good, just not my cup of tea.

mmmm highlights: she's not dead

I feel like the list has given me this album like 6 times. Or is it that there are 5 other nearly identical albums on this list? The best I can say is this is like an adequate local band covering songs discarded Smiths songs. Not objectionable, necessarily, but certainly not anything I'll be coming back to. What IS objectionable to me is that I can't decide between 2 and 3 stars. I'm actually going with 2 because there's really no reason for me to finish this album, having looked back at my history and knowing I have listened to the following album already. It ain't getting any better as time goes on. Stopping at track 6 ⭐⭐

4/2 Meh

Found it a bit dull

Well that was interesting

Strange and alternative.

This album has occasional glimmers of being really good. But mostly not that great. I just felt they were a little too close to the Smiths, without being enough new original style.

juste dix albums avant la fin juste dix albums avant la fin juste dix albums avant la fin juste dix albums avant la fin juste dix albums avant la fin juste dix albums avant la fin juste dix albums avant la fin juste dix albums avant la fin

nowt special.

never liked Suede although I agree they are musically significant

This feels like that moment when you are dancing, and you let go. You no longer feel any inhibition. You are part of the energy, completely in synch with those around you, moving as one. Back and forth like a metronome.

Nothing bad, but it just kinda slid off my brain.

Favorite tracks: Moving, Animal Lover (if it was 1 minute shorter) There were a couple songs that were ok, but overall I would not recommend this album. It's not bad per se, but the sheer volume and continuous droning at the end of every song knocks it down for me.

Good guitar, but painfully British.

In mijn herinnering was het 1 lang lied

nao gostei

Ugh, more brit pop nonsense. 2/5

Sweeping guitar lines, dramatic chord changes, steady rock rhythms, and occasional orchestral touches create a moody, dark and theatrical atmosphere, which moves this Britpop album like wandering through a rain-soaked city at night in borrowed glamour—seductive and dramatic on the surface, while restless and slightly hollow once the thrill wears off.

1 stern

Irritating. And that's from someone who has a couple of Suede records from back in the day!

Didn't much care for it.

- it's .... ok. It will stay in my rotation for a bit as a pallet cleanser while the music is on shuffle ..... Kinda middling with some good riffage .... but it's done better before and since. .... and I have to give a shout out to the other reviewer who nailed how completely annoying the singer is; SO much affectation and not in a good way. It can be painful .... 2.5 rounded down. -

Two decent songs at the start then I spent the rest of my walk waiting for this to end do I can listen to something else

Didnt do too much for me. There are simply better records for this genre.

Too on the nose in the Bowie-worship? It's okay, but nothing I'll revisit.

другий альбом suede за тиждень, звучить так само як попередній, я б сказала шо він посередній

this really just isn’t for me i don’t think.

Meeeeehhhhhh

I really didn’t need to listen to these two Suede albums.

Suede is the most boring of all the Britpop bands. The singer is whiny, the melodies are unoriginal. A desperate mix of Bowie and The Smiths, without any of the vibe or charisma.

Fave tracks- animal nitrate

This sounded samey and just wasnt my thing

I can’t remember any song except the first one

I've enjoyed a lot of the Britpop on this list, but this one fell flat.

milquetoast forgettable bland britpop. there is at least one interesting track, "breakdown", the only one i cared to learn the name of which has a sense of epic scale to it that is enjoyable. the rest of it though? pretty rough. it's not aggressively bad it's just kinda Nothing, ya know? it's aggressively british though, that's for sure. brett anderson's vocals are just awful. that's probably why "breakdown" is the best track on here to me because he's at least trying to sing there instead of just whining and it takes a back seat to the generally solid instrumentation. but on the whole? i already forgot all of it.

It's a weak britpop album. I don't really like the singing much on this, and it just generally comes across as underbaked to me. I've never liked Suede though, they're like the britpop band that even half of England forgot existed and it is very easy to forget about them. A discount The Smiths which, lets be real, is already a discount band. I really don't hear the david bowie comparisons wikipedia says they're compared to, especially early bowie, unless they're talking about like The Laughing Gnome Bowie.

Interesting cover art, but the music just sound the same to me. Like something i already have heard from other bands.

Ugh. Another 45 minutes of Brett Anderson’s whiny, pretentious voice. Once again, Bernard Butler is the redeeming feature with some great guitar work. But it’s never allowed to shine alongside the vocals for long enough.

This album is like when your high school sweetheart broke up with you and you locked yourself in your room to cry for the whole summer holiday. Who could you do this to me Caroline? What we had was special. Your dad tries to get you to come outside and go to a rugby game, or play golf, or eat dinner. Anything to try and get you out of this hole. But he doesn’t even understand the pain you are in.

Yep. It's britpop. Kind of really yawn.

I was underwhelmed by it, though it wasn't bad.

Made me feel suede and swayed

Not a fan

Ugh. I didn't really need to hear this.

Like most Britpop, this is distinctly meh.

Keysey voice: Brit.Pop.Slop. Shamefully boring and singer's voice is grating. The zodiac sign song and love in a Volvo, that was supposed to be deep, but it really wasn't. You can tell that the record company or whoever decided on the singles from the album because those three are all somewhat faster and energetic than the others.

I don't know if this does anything meaningful...

BritPop album, they're all alike. Production wise is ok 5/10.

This was ok

Comparing this to The Smiths is just lazy, and wrong.

It's trying but achieve nothing a mix of a lot of different things without making it personnal, not harsh to listen but without character

One half-decent hit does not make an album, and this is definitely not a great album by any metric. I was done after listening to half of it, and killed it as soon as Spotify took me into bonus tracks. Two stars.

A painfully mundane listen. As "alternative" as rock can get. Some interesting buts at the midpoint but not enough to salvage. 2/5

Hmm. Suede is a band I think I've heard of, though I'm confident I've never never seen this album cover before. Going off the year of release, I'm pretty sure I'm in for an alt-rock album. Might as well get on with it. Faaaaark. More Britpop. These editors need to get it through their skulls that Britpop isn't all that relevant in the grand scheme of things. Especially these fledgling albums which had a marginal influence over the genre. Anyways, this is a tolerable listen, I suppose. It's admittedly interesting to hear what a proto-Britpop album sounds like. The guitars have that distinctive crunch to them, though just about everything else is somewhat disorganised - especially those vocals. Overall, I was pretty spaced-out while listening to this one. "She's Not Dead" is decent. The moments where the sensitive guitars become more pronounced are quite good, and the atmosphere is pretty great overall. "Moving" features some pretty cool guitar distortion. I always enjoy when guitars adopt the "submerged underwater" sound. "Sleeping Pills" has a cool, dreamy atmosphere. "The Next Life" is vaguely familiar. Oh wait, I heard it in The Chase. I thought that movie was pretty alright, though everyone else seemed to hate it. Anyways, good closer. I like the vocalising sections along with the delicate piano. Book time. Has a lot of influences. Nothing much in there beyond that. Wikipedia says that this was the fastest-selling debut album in the UK in nearly a decade, got in on the ground floor of Britpop, has a solid critical reception and influenced a few bands of it's own. I guess I can let this one slide - these are some pretty solid qualifiers. I cosign the inclusion.

Technically sound music that doesn’t set itself apart from its peers. There’s no reason to listen again. Yes, I understand its influence especially for britpop, I’m still not interested.

Is Suede considered Britpop? This album smells like it and it stinks!

Generic British album that could be dropped and no one would notice #784 4/10

I thought this was Weird Al before he got weird but it was kind weird so I guess it would have been Kind Of Weird Al but then it wasn’t him so I guess it was Not Kind Of Weird Al. 4/10

It gains an additional star for the pleasant vocals. Other than that, this album is essentially one, long slow song which makes 40 minutes seem like 40 days. Favorite Track: "Breakdown"

She's Not Dead was probably the best of a dull bunch. Listened to the album twice, couldn't really get into it. Too vague, Smiths-lite. Ethereal, some tracks too hard on the feedback pedals.

Me gusta suede pero el album no le llego a pillar

bowie mimics. diluted music. tough listen gah

I prefer more upbeat music, but good all the same

Wasn’t really fan

It was ok

Bit boring innit

This band could benefit from a lyricist. Most of the tracks have the frontman sing the same line on repeat while the band plays in the background. Weak.

"Displaying a sound of Britishness..." - the Suede article on Wikipedia.

A lot of non-notable tracks for me, but Animal Lover was an absolute banger.

It must have been the moment because I don't get it whatsoever.

Very mellow 90s British alt rock a la The Cure, but not nearly as interesting

nothing really stands out on it, vocals pretty grating to me

Smiths wannabes

This is the ultimate uk gen Xer rock that no one else likes

Instrumentals okay, but I really disliked the vocals on this. A bad case of "Bowie voice". I don't understand where that comes from, it seems to only affect British singers but I've never heard anyone speak like that in real life. Anyway it's not my cup of tea. I found it very difficult to make any sense of the lyrics so can't really comment on those. Reading the Wikipedia page for this album it looks like the band were enormously hyped before its release, which is honestly baffling to me

Gotta be honest. I'm just impressed the author can find so many albums that sound the same and feels that I need to listen to them all, I can't even tell them apart.

I liked some of the guitar riffs. Vocals not so much. This is just forgettable. Not required listening I hate the album cover for it's colour palette.

Brit. Pop, schwülstig, 1993 -> 2

Quite liked the songs, but the whiney vocals were too much to handle.

I should like this, but I didn't. 2/5

not a huge fan of this. not bad enough to be a one... but i don't get what this album is doing here.

Starts out very strong, heavy 90's britpop. The second half of the album was a let down for me.

Pretty good, not my cup of tea har har har

Apparently patient zero for Britpop as we know it. The hallmarks are there: soaring choruses, layers of guitar, opaque lyricism, Smiths homage. It would probably really work for someone, although that person isn’t me. The Zodiac sign breakdown in “Sleeping Pills” was one of the only discernible lyrical moments for me which is not great.

Everything about this was meh

anguished, mannered, and rather dreary

It was interesting. Not too basic, nice vocals, I enjoyed it. 3/10

yaoi. 50/100

Wailing, annoying voice.

5/10 Want to like this but it just gets exhausting after a while. 45 mins of Suede is too much, sry. Highlights: Animal Nitrate So Young

My wife hates Bob Dylan, can't get past the voice to get to the poetry. I finally understand a bit better.

This is too overly dramatic for my taste.

Definitely sounds of my time, but it's too far on the melodramatic side of alternative (yet without the sonic charm of The Cure) for me to enjoy very much.

It's like New Wave meets Britpop. The result: the production value is good, but the songs are dull.

Generally felt a bit dreary to me and didn’t give me much interest. 2 stars

Wikipedia says Suede is part of Britpop's big four, with Oasis, Blur, and Pulp, but I swear I've never heard of them. I guess this album was fine? 2.5/5 stars?

Meh. Fine. Nothing more. Nothing less. 2/5

The lyrics are repetitive and boring. The music is decent but holy shit it's repetitive lyrics just remove any enjoyment of the band. It's like they tried to rip off better bands and got stuck on vibes.

This was ok, even if it was a little depressing.

Listened to it yesterday and don’t remember it.

Not for me

Just ok. The vocals are abrasive but the guitars are cool. Sounds like all the other bands in this genre trying to be something they aren’t. Not much authenticity.

I find Brett's voice and Bernard's guitar tone equally enjoyable.

i didn’t hate it but i didn’t love it either, minus 1 point for sounding like an amalgamation of a million things that already exist, plus incestuous undertones on the drowners

Boring

The voice sounds like it is constantly cracking. I hope the singer tries to make a new album after puberty.

I found it kinda boring. For me, that is one of the worst things for an album. I did like the increasing pitch at the end of the 2nd last track (Animal Lover) though If music is very extreme like Kollaps’ album, I actually enjoy that cause it is something different and pushes the boundaries. Something unique to “listen to before you die”. Kinda like how love and hate are not true opposites. An opposite of love/hate would be boredom

This was fine. Nothing that I'd want to listen to again though.

There's some interesting guitar work on this album, but it's overshadowed by a lead singer trying hard to be a Morrissey bootlicker, and not doing a very good job at it. There isn't any song on here that really stood out. The singles are all flat and tedious. Quite the disappointment.

Couple of catchy songs but the rest was a bit grating. I always liked Animal Nitrate. I think their Britpop contemporaries were much better than this offering.

This singer is just so annoying. Maybe if he sang differently, I'd enjoy him? But he doesn't and I don't. 2.5* because the rest of the band is fine, but still rounding down.

This might be the most boring Britpop album I've heard. So, props for beating Oasis.

Not necessarily bad, but also not particularly interesting.

The Smiths (again), so no surprises here. An unobtrusive album that has little character, barely any stand-out qualities, and I couldn't name or even clearly remember a single song after listening. 2.5/5

Some of it's OK, but a fair bit of droning and boring bits. Bit of a meh overall, not bad but nothing especially compelling.

Not my.cup of tea. Didn't care for it.

This is Britpop?? Wow it's nothing like Blur or Oasis and I am not a fan. Really don't like the singer's voice

Suede, much like the fabric, is soft and matted but when you rub it one way it shows the texture. Definite Smiths sound but more upbeat and layered. I'm betting more attention was given to the album due to the cover art...2 dudes, 2 chicks, dude/chick? (I checked on it and it's 2 chicks). Interesting to find out that one of the founding members started her own band Elastica and dated Damon Albarn. Not a bad record but not much of a triumph either...2.28 stars.

It's okay. It sounds dated. Reminds me of the Smiths. I just dont find it very interesting. There are no stand out songs for me.

not gunna listen to this whole thing

This was an album. What it did, I can’t really say because it’s run of the mill, droning britpop.

this mix sounds so strange in my ears, kind of muffled in a way? i don’t really enjoy this much. idk why. i’m just… noup. “pantomime horse” probably the best song. 2.8/5

Very middle of the road. No songs jumped out at me as either good or bad. Would not listen to again.

I've had 90s Brit pop for 3 of my last 4 selections. Mostly forgettable stuff. No thank you. 2/5 Album 28/1001

Britpop can be cool I guess
