Reviews (page 5 of 8)

In a nutshell: the media whores of Britpop. I say "media whores" Suede's management pimped them to every media outlet long before an album was released. It paid off. Just as Blur and Oasis were gaining traction, Suede were chugging along nicely. As for the music, excellent drumming and guitars. Loved them! Shame about the frontman's voice. Brett is intense and dramatic. I think he's trying to be a crooner but to my ears he lacks nuance. He wails and whines. That shrill falsetto (shudder). And I don't think it's Brett's accent either. But the Brits lapped this up. I can't deny that Suede holds an important place in music history, so I'm giving this a pass. Overall: 5/10

My first time listening to Suede, despite growing up on a large diet of Oasis (with sides of Elastica and Blur)…this was different and better than what I was expecting

Day411 - i didn’t particularly like the other album by suede but this one was pretty good

ANOTHER Suede album?! How, why, seriously? Its fine but two Suede albums to listen to before I die? No way. Its mid.

Any song I've ever thought was a great Suede single turned out to be by another band. That mixtape is 5*. Those songs actually by Suede, or perhaps just their press presence, always seem to project more cleverness than they actually have. A less-committed Smiths. Echo and the, well, just echo of better English bands from 10 years before. Probably sounded great in a bar in 93.

It's albums like this that make me so confused about what Britpop means. To me, it's post-punk, with echoes of bands that came before (Adam and the Ants, T-Rex, The Smiths, Bowie) and after (The Horrors). Nice diverse set of songs.

Not bad, but I don't really have much interesting to say about it except that I didn't realize Justine Frischmann was in Suede!

I guess this is considered one of the first Britpop albums. Which is why I guess it's on the list. I think this completely missed those of us on the other side of the ocean. (Is that a thing anymore? Are artists region-locked like they were back then?) It's a nice album. I really liked "Pantomime Horse". Had I heard this back then, it'd probably have stuck with me. As it is now listening to it for the first time 30 years later, it's nice, but not something I will likely revisit.

I had already forgotten how I love the song "Animal Nitrate"! But the rest of the album can't hold this level although I really like the guitars on it.

I listened to it twice and I still don’t have much of an impression of it. Not sure whether that’s my fault or theirs.

Not bad. I liked a lot of the guitar work on this album. It's not really my style, but it made for a decent play though. 3/5

I liked the other Suede album more. This is ok, but just not my thing. 2.5/5

Not that familiar with Suede’s discography. Because it is the precursor to a lot of Britpop, it ends up being an album that has a nostalgic vibe despite me not knowing many of the songs. 3⭐️

I only remember that it didn't annoy me.

I don't like britpop or glam rock. But the musicianship was good and I like the first couple songs

Another basic-ass British pop-rock album. The singer kind of sounds like a poor man's David Bowie. It was a fine though unspectacular listen. 2.5 stars...low 3 territory.

It was 👍

Relaxing

I liked this a little more than I expected to, though I did lose interest in the second half. Not bad as far as britpop goes. 3.5?

my youth - excellent

Hadn't heard of this before. Not mind-blowing but still pretty cool.

Not bad, good vibe but didn’t feel like finishing the album.

Had never heard of these guys. Kind of a cross between Oasis and the Smiths. I enjoyed it

It's aight Will I listen to again: 15%

i liked that they had gay people on the album cover and that the bassist is richard osman's brother. The music was fine

An alright album overall. I wasn’t really captured by it, but I didn’t give up on it either. Just not really my type of dedicated listening music.

I remember back as a teen in Australia reading about this album and how it was dominating the British charts. I headed down to the record store to check it out. Back then you could listen to albums before buying. I distinctly recall sitting there with headphones on being completely underwhelmed. This album suffered from British reservedness, being released into a world where Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Body Count etc. were the standard. Hearing it again decades later, with matured senses, this isn't a bad album. There's some interesting things going on musically. That said this still isn't something that I would seek out to listen to.

Wasn't too impressed overall by this album, but I can see it having laid some groundwork for the genre. While slow, and somewhat boring at times when it picks up and gets going you can really jam out to it. It gets loud, emotional, powerful and punches you in the gut with how ear-pearcing it can get. The highlights off this album for me are the songs She's not dead, moving, metal mickey and animal lover. What these songs I loved have in common is that they have quick parts, screaching near-scream vocals and insanely epic guitar solos. Overall, a pretty neat album to get me started on this 1001 album project.

Fine. Portions sound like the ‘90s trying to sound like the ‘70s.

Fine. The algorithm recommended other bands that were like (London) Suede and they’re all bands I like better. Perfectly bland.

This was fine. Not my typical thing, but I liked it OK.

The first 10 seconds of this album were almost a hard "no" for me. I turned it off and went and looked at some of their more popular songs because I hadn't heard of them before and really liked what I heard. Gave the album a second shot and I'm glad I did. Really liked at least the first half of this (first track not withstanding).

i kinda dug their glam take on Britpop, but that flange effect got old after a few songs, as did their singer.

Certainly enjoyed but little stood out or struck me or stuck.

There's nothing TECHNICALLY wrong with it. The musicianship and production values are fine. It's just so damn bland. It's cream of wheat to Bowie's strawberry tart.

It's fine. Sludgy, mid-90s, post-grunge brit-rock. If Oasis and Screaming Trees had a baby.

Suede's debut is one of the first britpop albums, and it is a lush, smooth, and well produced record, though to me the songs aren't too memorable or interesting and overall I prefer other britpop albums to this. 3.5 out of 5.

A very generic rock album. Not a single thing stood out to me, but it was a fine listen.

I actually liked this album way more than I thought I was going to based on the album cover. Thought it was going to be some super corny poppy shit. The guitar actually kind of rips in a few of these songs and the singer is not half bad. More of a hair metal kind of feel than pop. Still not something I would revisit but a nice surprise. Mid 3 still

I did not like the last Suede album but we'll give it a shot. Pretty similar feelings on a lot of these songs, but Moving has some really cool sonic sound effects. This was a weird blend of worse Bowie/The Darkness with some Cure and Smiths mixed in. Meh low 3. Almost went 2 but actually liked some parts of it.

🎧Middle of the road Britpop record. Favorite track: Animal Nitrate

Album 632 of 1001 Suede - Suede (1993) Rating : 3 / 5 Some decent Brit Pop. Reminds me of The Smiths, like a lot of Brit Pop tends to do.

Brings back some memories.

Unexpectedly good

Reminds me of pulp

What's with the intentional cracking of the voice? I might like this more if that hadn't been the choice. It IS a choice, right? And they're not the only British band from the 80s that sounded like this. Except that it looks like this came out in 1993? Well, I'm confused then. This sounds at least 10 years older. That voice and the clear Smiths influence both turn me right off. The more punk tracks redeem it somewhat, but I won't be going back to this. 2.5/5

Favorite Track: So Young

Like alternative British rock. Not too bad but not much stuck with me.

Singles are good - So Young, Animal Nitrate. The rest is fine, the arrangements are competent, but rarely innovative or particularly striking, so it mostly comes down to the quality of the songwriting (great to fine) and Bret Anderson's vocal affectations - which are sometimes well over-the-top.

Starts strongly before fading to a whimper. Lots of hype and fuss surrounded the album when it was released but all these years later it hasn't stood the test of time.

Wasnt awful

I'd already heard something about Suede and had fond memories of them. But I couldn't really categorize them anymore. After the comments I read in advance, I was excited. The comparisons with The Cure, The Smiths, Oasis and David Bowie raised my expectations quite high. Unfortunately, I have to agree with some commentators. The sound is reminiscent of the aforementioned musicians. It's just nowhere near as good. Then I'd rather listen to something else. The fact that the album wasn't particularly annoying is the best thing I can say about it. 3/5

Sleazy and fun, but the Bowie whining got a bit grating after a while.

Fun! Liked the guitars.

Not as fast and energetic as I had assumed. A little more raw than what came later. If I'm in the right mood and place this could be very good.

I liked some of the guitar tones but most of it is just not for me, similar to Morrissey.

Light and crazy vocals, and the music is all right. I'm sure I've heard this at my local pub.

A bit to lazy for my taste, but far better than what I expected. One of thos bands who sound kind of mediocre, with certain moments of pure brilliance interspersed in their music.

No. 265/1001 So Young 3/5 Animal Nitrate 3/5 She's Not Dead 3/5 Moving 3/5 Pantomime Horse 3/5 The Drowners 3/5 Sleeping Pills 3/5 Breakdown 3/5 Metal Mickey 3/5 Animal Lover 3/5 The Next Life 3/5 Average: 3,0 Was better than expected. Interesting fusion of pop and glam rock.

One of the progenitors of brit-pop, but still work to be done at this point. I was never a huge suede fan, and this is far from their best album. Anyone who thinks they were the best British band of the 90s (and there are a few who do) should listen to this, definitely maybe, modern life is rubbish, everything must go ( ), urban hymns, and different class, and see who the real dons were

Liked it more than I expected. Some good stuff.

Another album from the time of procreation where I wasn’t paying any attention to anything new. I’d probably like this album a lot if I’d listen again. But until then…meh.

So this album was actually very peaceful and relaxing to listen to. I think it was a little boring for sure after a couple songs but towards the beginning it was just calming and honestly pretty. I feel very neutral on this album and I’m not sure how to rate it because yes it was nice but I 1) don’t see its influence necessarily or 2) it did bore me towards the end. I think if I had the time I would listen a couple more times but for now I’ll give the benefit of the doubt.

I remember this album but not sure how much time - if any - I gave it back upon release. It holds up, and is way better than their follow-up album (Dog Man Star). Really the biggest negative is that the vocals get (more than?) a little trying at times, but I do say that on ~80% of albums. I like the music, although it all gets tiring by the end and I can't figure why it doesn't sustain my interest. e.g. I'd put any 2 of these songs on at any time and dig it but after 6 or 7 the mind wanders... I know on their next album I felt this way a lot more quickly. Is it production? Lack of dynamics? TL;DR: Decently surprising variety, and definitely stands out amongst the other billion or so 90s Brit-pop entries on this list not to mention what still gets (over)played on radio, but can't sustain my long-term interest. Good for a few tracks on a playlist. 6/10 3 stars.

I think I've had a Suede album before. Sexy cover! There are parts of this song that remind me of Catherine Wheel. Meh.

Pretty good

Totally new to this one, haven't even heard of the band. First listen through: nice dreamy indie rock, certainly sounds of a time. All sounded a bit similar. Wouldn't seek it out to listen again, but definitely wouldn't object. 3/5?

This was ok. I didn't love it nor did I hate it. Pretty easy listening for the most part.

When this came out, there was a lot of media hype for them, cause they looked good in magazines. The music was okay. Fine, but nothing exciting. It’s still fine, but ultimately not much more than that.

Meh… nothing wrong with it.

-this is definitely at the better end of the Britpop spectrum I’d say. Not sure why Suede didn’t do better in America at least for a little while because this is pretty strong for a debut, I actually really like Brett Anderson’s voice -Favorites are Animal Nitrate, Breakdown, and Animal Lover

First of all - interesting that for me to find this album I had to call the band 'The London Suede'. Is it just Suede in London? How many Suede's are there? Anyway, this was fine. Maybe worth a closer listen.

just fine overall, but when a song hit it HIT, you know?

I have never heard of this band. If I had not seen the date of the release I would have thought this was released 10 years earlier - when The Smiths reigned. So, a bit of a throwback that I really, really enjoyed. These songs fall right in my wheelhouse. Jangly guitar…a bit of angst…..good stuff.

There are some really solid tracks here but It can be a bit slow at times. We liked most of it though

I didn't think this was gonna be as good as it was. I didn't think I'd hear another good britpop song after so many not-so-good ones

Music was good but nothing really stuck. Really a 3.5

I like this better than their following album Dog Man Star, but I just get lost in the British glam of it all and can't find a foothold to give it staying power. 2.5/5

Suede is the second Suede album on the list as far as I remember, but neither of them are Coming Up, which was my favourite. The first four tracks on here here bangers and easy 4 territory, everything else afterwards is a bit weaker by comparison (Sleeping Pills is the best of them, just over Metal Mickey) and a bit less interesting, so it's a 3 overall because it's on its way to being the stuff I really liked from them, but not there yet.

Like our previous Suede album, didn't like it as much as the Suede I'd heard in my dad's car (Coming Up) when I was young. But this is better than Dog Man Star, I think. Just isn't that memorable for me, 3/5.

I found myself thinking, "This album has to get interesting at some point, right? Right?" Cue my excitement when I reached the final trio of songs – Metal Mickey, Animal Lover, and The Next Life – which are the only really great cuts from the tracklist. The remainder is fairly bland, milquetoast Britpop that was clearly inspired by the likes of early-career Bowie and the Smiths, but with less gusto and nothing new to bring to the party. (In fact, the same could be said for every song, but the final three were just a smidge better.) I'm definitely giving this album more flak than I should, because it was by no means bad. The vocals were funny and British, and the instrumentation was actually pretty dope. But I came in with high expectations because of the 4/5 album Dog Man Star, released a year later, which I had already reviewed. I'm not even sure I would say Dog Man Star was good, even though I gave it a good rating – but it committed a kind of Beatlesque style, which is at least a genre you can't go wrong with. Britpop is much more questionable. 3/5 Key tracks: Metal Mickey, Animal Lover, The Next Life

Oikein hyvä debyyttialbumiks, Coming Up oli niin paljon kovempi, että tähdet jää kolmeen

Solid album. I liked this one--it has some 90s alternative/britpop vibes but is more akin to 80s stuff like The Smiths, etc. There were some nice tunes here. ***

Geen slecht album, maar nu ook niet geweldig. Animal Nitrate is echt wel een klassieker. So Young is ook nog benoemenswaardig. Metal Mickey, The Drowners en Moving zijn nummers die ik nog niet kende en nog oké vond. 2.9*

starts very promising, but soon sorta drifts off into the softie rockie zone of meaninglessness

Downers and Metal Mickey are really good. The rest of the album is kinda bland, just a little punch and I would have liked this so much more.

Not familiar with this at all and it was fine. Never wanted to turn it off. But I don't remember much about it.

Nothing to see here.

0_o First listen Have to check out the London suede before I listen to this. I listen to like 3 songs but it's alright I guess.

It's tolerable and had some enjoyable songs. Probably enjoy it even more after that garbage I was given yesterday by Robert Wyatt

July 11, 2024 HL: “So Young”, “Moving”, "Breakdown”, “Animal Lover”, “Where the Pigs Don’t Fly” (bonus) Online articles mention the "Big Four" of Britpop- Blur, Oasis, Pulp & Suede. Well I've heard 5(!) Blur albums, 2 Oasis (Oases), 1 Pulp and not a lick of this band before today. A fine night-time listen, but in a tricky place between its influences (Smiths & Bowie) and the later 90’s Brit albums that came to define the era more. At least here in North America

Kind of good but boring

Kinda reminds me of The Cure.

Nice to revisit this after all these years where it's not One Of Many flowing into the studio. 3.5

Overall, the music was solid, but the vocals were a bit rough around the edges. The album presents an intriguing mix of alternative, grunge, and glam rock. While it might seem average for its time period, I can see it being the kind of album that grows on you with repeated listens, revealing its depth and unique qualities.

could i write poetry to this? n

Very good and underrated

Hadn't heard this one before, but was excited to listen since 90s British alt-rock is a favorite genre of mine. They didn't disappoint.

Nothing really stood out and the singer was a little too grindy for me.

I liked this album more than I expected to. Funnily enough, I thought the less popular songs/less Brit-poppy songs were infinitely better than the others. I did also find the singer to be a bit hard to listen to on some tracks, but I attribute that to just not liking the style of Brit-pop. Overall a solid listen. Top tracks: Pantomime Horse, The Drowners, Breakdown

At first, this guy sounded a little bit too much like the Smiths. However a kind of wained after a while and there's a lot of good songs on here but nothing great as usual

Pretty good.

Enjoyable! But it did not stand out to me as one I wanted to repeat listen to. Fun fact: the cranberries opened for them for one of their tours and ended up becoming more popular!

This never really engaged me much. It had a Smithyness to it that I kind of liked and was kind of annoyed by at the same time. It might have been the day. Maybe I'd like it more another time.

I found this one difficult to listen to on the first try. Coming back to it a couple of days later didn't help much. At least this time I didn't feel compelled to stop it before it ended.

This might improve with more familiarity but after only one listen this doesn't appeal to me much. It sounds like the 80s college radio bands that I never connected with.

This list really likes Britpop. A year ago I didn't even know what Britpop was, but now I'm deep in the weeds and have strong opinions about all these one-word-name '90s British bands (Suede, Blur, Pulp, Oasis, (The) Verve, Supergrass, and on and on and on). This band is interesting because it seems like they got a ton of hype before their debut album (this one) was even released. This also seems to be considered the first Britpop album, though I feel like I've read that at least three other times so who knows really. This one wasn't bad at all, but it definitely wasn't as interesting to me as some of the other similar albums that I've listened to. This is right in the 3.5 star range for me, I'm mildly positive about it but there wasn't a ton that really blew me away. Probably rounding down on this one, I feel like while it's reasonably well-produced it's not going to stick with me much. A random note, but while most of the Britpop bands never really hit it big in the US like they did in the UK (other than like Oasis probably), these guys didn't even have the same name in the US. It sounds like some other band was already using the name Suede in the US, so they went by The London Suede here instead. Favorite song: The Drowners Other: So Young, Animal Nitrate, She's Not Dead, Pantomime Horse, Sleeping Pills, Metal Mickey, The Next Life 5/10/24

I want to like this so much more than I do. I like a lot of the music - *really* like some of it in fact - but feel a massive disconnect with Anderson’s voice. Shame. 3/5

I never got into Suede, mainly because I was still in protracted mourning following the demise of The Smiths and held out some hope that Morrisey's solo career would keep the dream alive following the blistering 'Viva Hate'. Well, of course, that forlorn hope died a death many times over in the ensuing decades. And so it is that I get round to hearing Suede's debut album, 31 years after the event... and it's quite good! I hadn't been impressed by singles 'The drowners' or 'Animal Nitrate' at the time and, sadly, time hasn't improved that sentiment. However, I really like 'Pantomime Horse', and 'Metal Mickey' is a stomping little number. Throughout the album, the musicianship is great, particularly Bernard Butler's guitar and I'm happy to say glowingly that, after all these years, 'Suede' is a decent effort! Maybe I'll even give 'Dogmanstar' a spin one day.

What feels like a mostly David Bowie knock off with less polish, it does have a few gems hidden in there.

FAVO: Moving, Pantomime Horse, The Next Life

Don’t really remember!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, Suede by Suede, so many albums like this. And the cover doesn't really tell me what's going on. This ended up just being another bouncy pop type album from that time period. I liked one song but the rest was forgettable.

I mean, yeah. One of these albums. The Britpop, British alt-rock stuff that plagues the list, overrepresented and underwhelming. Not bad, liked a couple on here as is usually the case. But "just alright" is not alright on a list like this. Favorite tracks: Animal Nitrate, The Drowners, Where the Pigs Don't Fly. Album art: Two people kissing, are they boys? Are they girls? No one knows, but it's provocative. It gets the people GOING. 3/5

Was an unexciting album; just fine to listen to. Confused why it is on this list, what it's importance to music as a whole is -- Felt like I was in a 90s teen movie while listening to it, which was nice.

It sounds like The Smiths directly passed their torch to Suede and in doing so it created Brit Pop. This album is incredibly 90s, guitar driven alt rock. Definitely not a bad thing. Overall, I say it was a bit overhyped on its release and I don't hear the Bowie influences that others have mentioned. Nevertheless it's an impressive work.

I enjoyed this one! It doesn’t sound like anything else that came out in the early nineties. It sounds like it could’ve come out in the late 70s or early 80s, but with enough of its own sound to not seem dated. I thought it was a bit too long in run time until I found out I had listened to the expanded edition which has like 7 extra songs. That being said, my initial thought was the album should have ended on The Next Life, it was a perfect ender but there were two songs after it that threw off the flow. Come to find out that song wasn’t even part of the original album. I think it would have been a great closer still.

Sehr spezielle Stimme und leicht schwermütig

It's like the UK Pixies from the 80s in the 90s.

The album got better as it went on, but overall it's a bit dreary? Very bland and just not as good as other britpop. It feels like a rainy afternoon, only instead of making you feel cozy, you feel ultra miserable. There were some good songs though - Pantomime Blues, The Drowners, and Sleeping Pills.

It has some moments where it rocks out and I enjoyed those. The playing is solid and they know how to craft a song but it's somewhat disjointed and inconsistent. Decent but not spectacular.

Ha Ha, this was a surprise! I enjoyed this album so much today. It was great for a change and most of the tracks were pretty catchy. I'm not sure about the album cover; I had some strange looks from office staff peeping at my Spotify browser app. Loved it

A well-produced and well-played Brit rock album, but there is nothing that is truly noteworthy for me here.

Des sonorités intéressantes, qui semblent justement dérivées du rock britannique à la Smiths, The Clash ou The Cure. J'aime bien.

Les falta emocionar con sus instrumentos

Sounded familiar but also new. Decent album, middle of the road

An unmistakable voice makes for an unmistakable album. It's as Suede as it goes, but that might not be everyone's cup of tea. I feel it's a solid album, definitely worth a listen, but not up there with the great ones.

"Suede" by Suede, also known as "The London Suede" in the US, is a seminal album that helped define the Britpop sound of the early '90s. Released in 1993, the album is a mix of glam rock, punk, and indie pop, with a focus on catchy melodies and introspective lyrics. Tracks like "Animal Nitrate," "Metal Mickey," and "The Drowners" are standout examples of the band's ability to combine gritty guitar riffs with infectious hooks. Brett Anderson's distinctive vocals and the band's tight musicianship give the album a sense of urgency and authenticity. While "Suede" received critical acclaim upon its release and helped launch the Britpop movement, some critics have noted that the album's sound can be derivative at times, echoing the glam and punk bands of the '70s. Additionally, the album's production, while fitting for the time, may sound dated to modern ears. Overall, "Suede" is a solid debut album that showcases the band's talent and sets the stage for their future success. It earns a respectable 3/5 rating for its contribution to the Britpop genre and its memorable tracks.

The only song I ever knew from this band was in fact the lead single “Metal Mickey” off this album. And the rest of the songs did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed this from front to back which I have not said much about other albums in this exercise. Strange how this and many of their other albums did quite well in the UK, but didn’t have near the impact in the US. And yet their fellow Brit-pop contemporaries Oasis, Blur, etc. did not have the same fate. I will definitely be visiting more of their catalog.

I liked this much more than I expected to. Having said that, I expected to hate it.

Some of it was good. Some of it not so good. Maybe I’ll listen again later and it will grow on me but for now it’s a high 2 for me.

Gummy is kicking in and I can’t come up with much to say about this album. I liked it ok. Above average. 2.75/5

Ok. Nothing great

British glampop. I'd never heard of this band before. Other reviewers compared them variously to Bowie and the Smiths -- some of the tunes sound a little like Ziggy Stardust era Bowie, but as a pale knock-off with nowhere near the same edge and energy. The Smiths is a better comparison but again, without taking that sound anywhere new. The songs are well crafted, played and produced (The Drowners was my favorite) and this record was reasonably entertaining. Despite that, I feel like it's one of the worst choices for this list I've heard yet -- worse than several albums I didn't enjoy listening to as much. There was nothing special or innovative here -- if you like 90's britpop you'll like this record but it sounds like lots of other stuff from the genre. It's definitely NOT a record you need to hear before you die.

Emhh algunas cosas lindas pero nada que me llame

Listened 3 times, and it grew on me

Seems like one song.

Another questionable entry to this list. Not a bad album but nothing special about it either. O.K. britpop but that’s about it.

Fine but inessential. “Moving” did have a great guitar solo.

Average early 90's British (?) rock.

Mid tier brit pop. Reminds me of pulp and stone roses just not as good. Still catch well crafted competently played

never been a massive fan, just a bit miserable in it?

2.8 - It was fine, quite forgettable. Did like He's dead though

Medium. Fave Tracks: So Young, Animal Nitrate 3/5

I feel like this album started off pretty strong and then kind of fell off for me. The opening track actually reminded me a lot of the Pixies but as the album went on it felt like it moved more into just standard Britpop. I didn't strongly dislike anything on here though either, so I'm going to go right down the middle with 3/5. Standout Tracks: So Young, Animal Nitrate, Moving, Metal Mickey

High highs and low lows. Ultimately not a huge fan of the more glammy britpop tendencies that Suede ventured into.

An album with strong rock influences. Some of the vocals are a bit too overdone for me, but overall it's a very good album. I should listen to it again later when I don't need so much time to study.

Meh. Ok in parts. Maybe a 3.

Very cool intro to Britpop. I have listened to almost nothing in this genre and enjoyed it. It takes some time to get through the vocals. The guitar's sound on this album is incredible and rich. Probably not staying on the rotation, but enjoyed it. Sounds a little like The Cure or the Pixies for a new listener.

wasn't really into them in the day but I do like this album. probably listen to it again sometime

As is common, more British bias. This album was big in England. No where else. But it's not bad. Pretty good even. If I had not heard any Brit Pop before, I might like it even more, but it's hard to know, and as is, I'd give this 3.5 stars, and I'm rounding down.

I can't blame them for britpop even if I should. This album is legitimately great. It's not whiny and painfully whitebread like the britpop that followed. There's an edge to it that keeps it interesting.

It’s ok overall. Probably not something I’d listen to regularly but it’s different in a good way.

This is an old friend. Butler's guitars are amazing, lyrics and voice are good to. I think I prefer Dog Man Star

This is a real swing for the fences rock album. It’s got hard rockers with grit and swagger, and it’s got soaring, stadium-sized anthems. I like the energy but after two going on three listens, not a lot of songs stick out in my memory. But I’m enjoying them in the moment.

I know there is a bit of a (US) backlash about the amount of Britpop on here but this is quite bold and distinctive. There are obvious Bowie influences but it holds together well.

So Young // The Next Life // 3/5

Won't someone give me a gun? Oh, well it's for my brother Well, he writes the line Wrote right down my spine It says, "Oh, do you believe in love there?" Meh. Decent. 3/5

The London Suede, very average English rock

It’s a wonderful britpop record and an amazing debut but I can’t help but feel that something’s still missing.

First listen to suede. Some nice tracks.

Early Britpop, they say. I think they deserve their own spot in music history. It sounds darker and much more dramatic than Blur and Oasis and the likes. They're closer to the Cure and the Smiths. The singer has that Bowie gasp. Favorite song: Pantomime Horse

Don't like his style of singing. Awesome guitars in 'the drowners'!

Like the vibe

This was fine. Good not great.

Good, not great. That is all.

Well, that was unexpected. I'll never listen to this again, but it was fine for an 80's rock album.

I was just on the edge of liking this, but it never really pushed me over. Not bad. Solid 3.

As a debut this album kind of feels like a promise of better things to come than an actual great album. I mean Animal Nitrate is pretty catchy but nothing else really stood out for me.

Ok, this more closely aligns with my preconceptions about Suede. I much preferred "Dog Man Star" - heard the singles from this against my will far too many times, and the singer's little vocal flourishes now really grate, even on the tracks I'm unfamiliar with. Fave track..... eh, "She's Not Dead" let's say, though I wasn't too enthusiastic about any of it.

3 singles are excellent. The rest is so so

Nice band overall. Love the song Beautiful Ones which is not on that album. The band was surely influential in the britpop genre! Personal Top3 in no order: Animal Nitrate So Young Moving

So this is Britpop's answer to grunge or what? It's not bad but not really good. Charitable 3 stars

Es un buen disco, aunque no es mi favorito de Suede.

just okay

It was a good album but not really my taste

Pretty good honestly. I was not familiar with it before listening but I could see listening again.

Kind of slay! I liked moving - the end song was also a wild way to end an album.

Jännää vähän psykedeelistä poprockia. Vähän ehkä tulee jopa Rush mieleen, paitsi että laulaja kullostaa täysin eriltä. Pantomime Horse hyvä. Varmaan paras Tää oli ihan hyvää

This is my second Suede album, and my critique of them is more or less the same. They remind me of other bands who did this sound better. I actually kind of dug the song "Animal Nitrate", but the vibe of the album didn't keep with this particular sound. Again, I'm left feeling like this was fine, but ultimately nothing remarkable.

3/5. A pretty fun britpop album but the hits definitely shine above the other ones. Not really a bad song on this one but I'm going to need a few more listens to cement a 4 score. Just britpop is becoming harder to listen to because a lot of it sounds too similar. A personal bias but that's my rating.

Pretty good - the production/ mix left me wanting a bigger thicker sound. I feel like maybe there’s a better version of this album that could’ve been made or released. I like the glammy and moody stuff over the punkier stuff. I can hear the Bowie influence on Animal Nitrates. Pantomime horse was good. Cool chorus in the Drowners wish the verses were better. Sleeping pills is good It reminds me of something from Pablo Honey or the Bends. Breakdown is awesome Next life is cool- I feel like this is in a movie but I can’t place it Did not like Metal Mickey, or animal lovers

I enjoyed this but probably wouldn’t listen again. Mostly pretty good songs and I like the glammy vibe. The singer annoyed me at times but it fit the vibe of the album. The production was pretty good, kept me listening the whole time, but I think if it were a touch bigger I would’ve liked this more.

This album really grew on me! His voice is really polarizing and I found myself picturing another singer and started to enjoy the songs.

Apparently some consider this the album that spawned Britpop. Not a huge fan of Britpop, but I can see how it was influential... it's a bit whiny in the wrong ways for me. Definitely glad to at least hear some Suede since I'm unfamiliar with most of it.

Not a huge fan, but it was ok

Easy to listen to, insofar as its genre goes. It’s a finely produced piece but being quite honest I didn’t find much in the way that you’d call memorable.

There are a few kind of interesting tunes. But I don't think it's anything over the concepts.

it was OK, didn't make it through the first listening since i got tired of the same voice throuout. liked the music, may go back and continue later.

Another classic debut - there is some great stuff on here (singles like So Young and The Drowners but also the more somber Breakdown and The Next Life) but there’s also a bit of filler, and some of the mixing is pretty poor (there’s one bit of phasing that stuck out as being particularly bad)

Pretty boring outside of the singles, but some decent tracks on here.

Singles are top

I hear hints of Bowie’s influence and I think that this band must’ve influenced The Darkness’ vocal stylings. Solid tunes and a good mix between slow songs and up-tempo rockers. I don’t think I have any favorites off this album nor do I have any that I really dislike. I’ve always liked Justine Frischmann although I have to admit I knew her from her work with Elastica rather than Suede. I think her great guitar work is the highlight of this album rather than any given song. This album gets a 5 or 6 out of 10 for me.

Not bad not great. Didnt do much for me either way

Not as boring as I expected or remembered - and not as good as it is purported to be. Some good rock songs and some pretty quieter songs. Ok.

It was fine

I really liked the first song "So Young" and was looking forward to the rest. "Animal Nitrate" was ok. Then it kind of went downhill with all the shoe gazey ballads. I thought this was the best at its higher tempo songs like "Moving".

This was the second album from Suede I've had on my list and they're beginning to grow on me. Not literally, like a wart, or rash, or anything but in a good way. Don't know if they'll show up again but they were a worthwhile listen nonetheless.

I liked it. Definitely never heard of a British glam rock band before. But I believe this certainly embodies what that aesthetic would be.

Would have enjoyed it more with a different singer

Like Animal Nitrate, not so keen on She's Not Dead Moving and Pantomime Horse sound like filler The Drowners is great Where the pigs don't fly is a dreamy ending to the album

Like the singles, happy to have it on in the background, but a whole album of Suede and Brett's voice gets a bit much for me. Appreciated the glam aspects, which I hadn't thought about much previously with regards to Suede.

I'd give it 3.5 if I could. I expected to like it more than I did as it touches on several styles I enjoy, but for some reason it didn't totally click, too all over the place maybe.

Very interesting album, 3/5

Good vibes but nothing really stuck out to me

Favorite Song: I liked how Animal Nitrate sounded. Honestly seemed good, but not good enough to be on this list. Where is the epic ground-breaking-ness???? The main words that come to mind for this album are "weirdly mid".

Good but not especially great. I don't get what all the fuss is about. I had Ziggy Stardust a few albums ago and this isn't that. Two thumbs up for the cover art, though. 3

A good start…

as much as i like this sound this didn’t really blow me away - lots of better out there

Enjoyed this one. Loud wall-of-sound production reminiscent of other britpop groups like Oasis. Eccentric, new-wave style vocals. Mixing 90s alternative with glam elements. Cool listen. Sick album cover too.

Nothing to write home about, but listenable.

Quality indie solid and unshakable

Suede were OK. Just OK, noting special but not shit.

Good album. 3.5

Another yeah why not

I find their songs all a bit too similar

brit pop with more glam and grit.

I have seen this album around for a long time, but had never taken time to actually listen to it. One of the first bands to really make it big in the Brit-Pop craze of the early 90's, Suede was always destined for greatness. They showed what they had and made a giant name for themselves with singles such as The Drowners, Animal Nitrate, and So Young. Personally, the album just doesn't resonate with me like albums from other bands of the time. Singer Bernard Butler gives a great performance on almost every track, while guitarist Brett Anderson is clearly the highlight of the band. Favorite tracks: Moving, Sleeping Pills

If Oasis and Sweet had a kid and they gave him a guitar fuzz box pedal turned all the way up for his birthday - you would get Suede. Could use a little more fun, and better annunciated lyrics. Or just a touch less fuzz effect on the guitars. Extra point for real drums and guitars.

Enjoyed this album!! Was poppier than Oasis but I am a fan of a 90s UK band. I do hate how Spotify only has the anniversary editions and then adds extra songs to the track list.

pretty sick album, some really good songs and some really bad songs, averages out

Ganske fett, men ikke helt min greie

generic 90s alternative rock sound. not great, but not terrible either.

Not as good as I remember.

Pretty good stuff. Very good composition, love the voice. I need to be in a specific kind of mood for this kind of music though.

Good album. And that's it. Not really rememberable.

This was alright. Not a huge fan of the vocal style but the music was pretty good. Personal Enjoyment - 6.5 Songwriting - 7.5 Lyrics - 7.5 Originality- 7 Production Value - 10 Artwork - 9 Overall - 7.5

What a boring and dragging album. I like the guitar sound and licks, but so draining to listen to this songwriting.

2023/03/06 Could give it another try someday.

Guitar driven brit-rock. Some "soaring/open" tones that vaguely reminded me of Def Leppard

I thought I liked Suede, but this album is alarmingly whiny. Hope my memories aren't too rosy and their later albums still hold out. But this wasn't fun.

Good album. Pretty chill vibes

Not bad. A little outdated. A U-2 sound that must have inspired U-2 in fact.

Boring. Never heard of this band and it never does anything interesting. 2.5/5

2/2/23 3 Fav: The Drowners Weird but not bad…?

would not object if played in an Uber or a Coffee Shop, or maybe on the radio, but wouldn’t add to a playlist

When I saw this was a britpop/glam rock mix, I anticapated really not enjoying it too much. To my surprise it ended up having some really good stuff. The slower/ballad cuts I enjoyed more than the more high energy stuff, though. It also dragged a bit towards the end - could've ended around the 35 minute mark and been a 4 but oh well. 6/10

This was a good listen. I could see putting on a song or two, but the entire album for a bit repetitive at the end. Great vocalist.

Animal nitrate and Drowners were good. Rest meh. Like the clash (both brits) but less good

90s indie rock. Some good energy, but overall pretty forgettable.

I expected to dislike this, since I have Dog Man Star a 2. However, I was pleasantly surprised. They sound like a less interesting version of The Smiths to me, but I didn’t mind it!

I recognized The Next Life from The Chase (1994) featuring the gorgeous Kristy Swanson. 10yr old me knew at that moment, without a doubt, that the E36 BMW would become one of the best generations of 3 Series.

Wasn’t too bad, kinda forgettable tho

I never listened to Suede during the initial phase of Britpop. I'm not sure why. I gravitated toward Elastica, Blur and Oasis. Until now, I never took the time to make my way to Suede. I don't know if this would have engaged me like "The Great Escape" or "Definitely Maybe" did.

I knew of Suede in their hey-day but unlike a lot of Brit music at the time this just didn't really land for me at the time and honestly, not a lot has changed. Not bad, not great, not my thing really...right down the middle. If I hear it again fine, but won't rush to put it on myself. The only thing I did learn from this is before they made the big leagues Ricky Gervais was their manager briefly. I wonder whatever became of him?

better than a lot of britpop albums 6/10

I could see why people might like this. 5/10

Eh, maybe I'd have liked it better if I were an angsty teen

It was not terrible but I probably don’t need to revisit this. Listened twice to be sure

what a strange little album. it didn't do much revolutionary, but it knew what it wanted to be and did it well. pretty good, not essential.

Love me some britpop, loved the melodies, the vocals remind me a little bit of Bowie, sometimes too over the top but really a gun listen 6.5/10

A clear case of an album that might have been something upon its release, but - by now - is an irrelevant has been.

J'ai eu un peu l'impression d'entendre la même pièce. Ce groupe a un son à lui, ce son me plaît, mais je finis par trouver ça un peu monotone. Mériterait peut être une autre écoute pour que je me familiarise avec lui.

90 luvun britti rock pop vittuilua.... haista vittu. sama kuin kaikki vittu muutkin..... voit lukea ne arvostelut, niistä arvostelusita, niistä saa , ne on samoja mitä laittaisin nyt tähän, ne arvostelut, eli, jos haluat nähdä kunnon arvostelun niin mene katsomaan niitä arvosteluja 90 luvulta brittiläisiä vittu bri ish vittu meikä pojalla on aksentti hahahahaha turpa kiinni vitun brexit lutka tumputin kuvalle though mutta joo sanoisin että annan kolme kuitenkin (lol olin niin negatiivinen mutta annan positiivisen määrän tähtiä(stars) aikaha) pantomime horse

Muziek 4/5, zanger 2/5 = 3 sterren

I feel like this type of Brit pop is hit or miss for me but this one was more in the middle for me. I liked the sound of it generally but none of it stuck with me either. The wiki says this is like the first Brit pop album and that makes sense given that it sounds more like the smiths than oasis

I had some fun with this one, but I just can’t get super excited about it like I have with some of these others. A solid album, I can see why it’s a classic, but I can’t see much more than that.

Very solid, will download others by them. Yoooo!

Wasn’t the closest listen, but cool 👍 Queers are cool 😎

Album not on Spotify.

Anderson always tried a little too hard with the androgyny and the ambiguous sexuality (despite quite clearly being straight), perhaps in an effort to come across as more interesting. Because aside from a few stand out tracks where Bernard Butler is unleashed on lead guitar and the tempo is quick and the mood is glamorous, there’s too much internalised warbling on the slow tracks. For sure, Suede had something and definitely had their moments, but there’s half a decent album here.

Good not great

D'accord

ce fut long mes aïeux

The album cover made me expect…I don't know, something else? My wife's driving me nuts right now, trying to explain how calming ice cream is for stomach, and interfering with my review. In the past 5 minutes, she's gone from complaining about how "funny looking" Reba McEntire is to trying to remember what the movie with Laura Dern and Cher and that kid with the funny looking face was called. So basically she thinks Reba McEntire looks like Rocky Dennis, which isn't fair to either of them. Or this album, now that I think about it.

This album rocked! Definitely had the same energy as early Bowie or The Smiths. Manic depressive to its core and very creative.

Aardige popmuziek. Ik vind de zanger niet altijd even leuk om naar te luisteren. ***

This album is full of unoriginal 80s pop music, but it was made in the 90s. Music wasn’t necessarily bad, just not my type and nothing new. 3/5

Not bad, but nothing really grabbed me.

I wasn’t familiar with this but quite enjoyed it. I thought that musically it was good. Loved the drummer. Once again the vocals I thought were quite generic & uninteresting. And some of the lyrics were a tad embarrassing - You’re a water sign & I’m an air sign - Really?????? But I liked Animal Nitrate, She’s Not Dead & Pantomime Horse & really enjoyed The Drowners & Metal Mickey. Solid.

Pretty adequate Bowie/Smiths knock-off. I remember the hype in the NME when Suede first appeared. Their early singles featured on this album are pretty strong, and I bought a copy of this album around the time it came out. Have not played it in quite a while... Is it on the list as the most dramatic example of an over-hyped English band (on the cover of the NME before they even had a record out)? They delivered a pretty good record, but an all-time classic? Perhaps not. Bernard Butler does a lot of the heavy lifting with some pretty flash guitar work that evokes Mick Ronson-era Bowie. Brett Anderson's tendency to yelp gets a little wearing after a whole album, and the lyrics (with their "shocking" androgyny and hints at bisexuality) are a bit embarrassing now, but they could crank out a tune. The singles (Metal Mickey, So Young, The Drowners, Animal Nitrate) are pretty strong. I like that the production still is a bit of rough-around-the-edges, which is to my taste. I might try to spin this a little more, but I do think you could live a long and happy life without this record.

British glam rock.

I've never heard of Suede before today, so I entered into this listening session not knowing what to expect. What I heard was notes of brit pop/ alt rock of the 90s. Vocal delivery is very similar to The Smiths. Not a stand out album for me, but not terrible either. I'm glad I listened to it, but it isn't something I will put in frequent rotation. Favourite songs : Moving, Animal Nitrate, Metal Mickey Least favourite songs : The Next Life, Breakdown, So Young 3/5

Well they ain't no Oasis.

if i remember right it was ok

Enjoyed but a bit same-y

Wacky cover matches the David Bowie + Smiths thing going on here Metal Mickey doesn’t sounds like the Metal Mario theme but I ain’t complaining

the cover prejudices me to expect big queer energy from here. opening with "so young" tells me that the queer energy comes in a david bowie flavor. why isn't "moving" more of a bi anthem? "she's not dead" is such an efficient narrative delivery device. "pantomime horse" too, if more self-indulgent. really, a lot of these songs would make for great stories if they could have figured out a different way to end besides doing a line over and over again. or just snip those parts out entirely. how much better would "breakdown" be if it was just 4 mins? the guitar work in "animal nitrate" is amazing. double for "the drowners" and "metal mickey". apparently these three were the singles out of this. why didn't they do this for every song? "animal lover" could have been a single too. im wondering why this album is called the harbinger of britpop. the sounds are bowie/smiths photocopies, far far away from parklife.

I guess in retrospect we were still figuring out Britpop at the time, so this was a landmark album. I remember my buddy's younger sister was a huge fan of Suede, Blur, and all things Britpop or Britrock in the mid-90's. Blur I got, Suede I did not. I think I still don't. The album feels a bit aged, and foggy. I really only knew Animal Nitrate before this, and I thought So Young (the follow-up single) sounded very much like it. I had no idea that The Drowners and Metal Mickey were the two singles before it that was creating all the positive Suede momentum. They're pretty good and better than Animal Nitrate. My favorite track though was Moving; still that foggy sound but a bit more energy that I enjoyed. Of the softer or trippier songs, Sleeping Pills was my favorite. Good lyrics and an otherworldly sound - Bowie-esque almost. I guess I never totally understood Bowie either so if they're paying him reverence (nd not at the same level) then maybe that's why this album doesn't quite move the needle high for me.

Dreamy Britpop that owes more than a little to David Bowie. Maybe a little aimless in the middle, but finishes strong.
