this clearly grew off of me.. i find it lyrically cringe at times. blister in the sun is sometimes pretty fun though!
blister in the sun!!!!!!!!!! gone daddy gone was fun! not really my style (like everything else I've listened to thus far, but I am having fun with it.
3.9 Killer name and cover tho
Decent album, a little nostalgic.
This album sounds like ass. 80’s privileged white boy rock. Some songs are decent, likely will not listen to again
Forgettable, but good in some places.
mais um self titled :D FAVS (top 3): blister of the sun, add it up, gone daddy gone mençoes honrosas: kiss off, confessions, good feeling, gimme the car dahorinha até mas acho q podia ser melhor principalmente pq gostei bastante da track 1 nota final: 3/5
6/10
oooohhh they are Blister In The Sun guys,,, ok i'm with it now. Add It Up and Gone Daddy Gone were my favs. The xylophone in GDG was so so good. But I also liked Ugly and Blister In The Sun. I ended up enjoying this a lot, it's not that different to some of the stuff I already listen to. Some songs were very eh but overall I really liked the album. 4 stars for me. The acoustic guitar and vocals were teetering on the edge of annoying for me, half the songs were just bad but a few good gems in there. Wouldnt listen agaain though. Fav song: gone daddy gone 2 stars
Nothing particular, knew and liked 'Gone Daddy Gone' from before.
ahhhh …. this takes me straight back to highschool orchestra camp when we listened to this album on cassette tape non stop …. I like a few of the songs (blister, confessions, kiss off etc) but it’s not really a constant rotation album … and possibly I have given it an extra star for nostalgic memories!
Violent Femmes are the poster children for teenage angst bullsh*t. And I mean that in a good way. If you put "Blister in the Sun" and "Add It Up" on a 7-inch 45 rpm vinyl single, you could carry angst around, if not in your pocket, at least in your backpack. "Why can't I get just one kiss. Just one scr*w. Just one f*ck!" OMG. Rampant, unfettered sexuality. "When I'm out walking I strut my stuff and I'm so strung out I'm high as a kite..." OMG. This is your brain on drugs. But this is real life, gang. Get over it.
Did not realize Blister in the Sun was a Violent Femmes song. Sounds more 90s than 80s.
Album starts with a bang!!! Blister in the Sun is a classic. Not an album I would go out of my way to listen to but I can appreciate its influence. I feel like this album is how it feels to be a teenage boy. Favourite songs are Blister in the Sun and Confessions.
One of my favorite artists growing up was this Christian pop-punk band named Hawk Nelson. Their final LP with founding member Jason Dunn (Crazy Love) was released alongside a companion album called The Light Sides, which was essentially comprised of acoustic takes on their hits from the early-mid 2000s. I played the absolute heck out of it in middle/high school. That said, the concept of an acoustic punk album isn't entirely foreign to me and I was looking forward to hearing what Violent Femmes' debut LP would bring to the table! The two albums honestly aren't very comparable – both use acoustic instruments, have a sense of adolescence in the lyrics and are vaguely pop-punk, but that's pretty much as far as their similarities go. Violent Femmes' self-titled album skips right over the fun/nostalgic bits of adolescence and gets straight to the parts we'd rather forget: the sweaty, sticky, horny and toxic parts. The album makes me look back on the worst versions of myself, but in a relatively fun way that doesn't lead to complete self-loathing. "Add It Up" was probably my favorite on the entire album for that exact reason. While I appreciate how uncomfortable this LP can get and how unique of a sound it went for (especially in the early '80s), I just don't think it quite reaches the heights of my other four star albums and I can't really see myself revisiting the full thing. Maybe I'll check out Hallowed Ground someday if I'm ever feeling particularly angsty! Highlights: Kiss Off, Add It Up, Confessions, Promise, Gone Daddy Gone
I liked them until the last few, the last song was so bad.
Sorti en 82, quel exploit!! 3-/5
i recognized the first song
Much more enjoyable and disturbing than I originally thought. The upside is that you can hear this album and feel as if you are right back in your friend's garage with friends while the band just kicks out these tight jams. The downside is that you're convinced that many of the band members will be on a very bad list and hopefully not living in your neighborhood 20 years down the line.
I was pretty good, I understand what they were going for and why people were inspired by them People did make better versions of this overtime so it has dropped because of that.
its like if the Ramones and Rolling Stones were more lonely and even more horny... someone else said when radio head sings about loneliness, its like "awe, there there buddy!" but when the Violent Femmes sing about loneliness, someone need to cal HR, and I feel like that's so valid lol. I will say, I can see how it was a precursor for a lot of the alt-rock/pop stuff to come, like I think the Violent Femmes and CAKE are probably spiritually cousins, or even Beck. I appreciate a lot of The Beach Boys-type guitar and rhythms and even some vocals, like in "Prove my love", so it feels less easy to pinpoint in a decade if I didn't know it came out in the 80s.
- already knew blister in the sun (que j’adore) mais plonger dans l’album complet c’est vrm chouette - la voix du chanteur est tellement unique, c’est raw et authentique - pov: angry teenagers experiencing rejection for the first time - fun alt rock but not my absolute favorite - meilleure chanson: gone daddy gone, ugly
Reminiscent of The Clash and Patti Smith at times, this angsty post-punk album really slaps in places, and really doesn't in others. I find the songs to be hit or miss, and while Blister in the Sun is an all-time classic, I found many other tracks (especially in the back half) to be lacking depth. 5/10
Scrappy folk punk. Pretty decent.
GIVE HIM THE FUCKING CAR
Apart from "Blister in the Sun" I don't think i know any of this album surprisingly. Never dug into Violent Femmes but here we go. listened to it at work. not my favorite but a few tracks i liked. definately a respectable album and important piece of indie rock history. 3.5
W: 3/5 P: -/5
Very “woman, wo-man, whoaaaaaaaaaaa MAN!” energy
I liked it, not amazing not great it was a solid album
“First song is good. It’s sort of well known” - Kerri Lyrics lean into SA territory and caught me cringing a few times. So hard to give it a strong review as a result. Musically otherwise it was decent.
I feel like blister on the sun is by far the best song on this album. The deeper tracks did not feel as polished
Not the best album to listen to while you have a raging headache lol. Listened to this one fairly recently by the recommendation of Gnarly-Owl. I think at the time Wild Gift by X was the album of the day and we got on the topic of the punk-esque genre. Which I think the Violent Femmes is adjacent to. The guitar on here is way better than any of the other punk albums that have popped up on this list thus far. First song is one I have known for years, although not sure from where. Will have to revisit in the future when I do not have strep throat. Some of the lyrics on this were weird and very thirsty... "But I look at your pants and I need a kiss Why can't I get just one screw? Why can't I get just one screw? Believe me, I know what to do But something won't let me make love to you Why can't I get just one fuck? Why can't I get just one fuck? I guess it's got something to do with luck But I waited my whole life for just one..." Dudes gotta download tinder... jeese...
I was surprised to learn that the Violent Femmes are men. Blister in the sun is very catchy. The rest of the album isn't bad and is kind of fun and flirty at times. Not bad.
Some fun songs on here! Blister in the sun and kiss off are classics. I was surprises that this was early 80s, it sounds late 80s or early 90s even. Definitely trail blazing!
boom, adolescente, rebelde
It was nice. It started off well then just tethered a bit
A conflicting album for me. On one hand, it's eclectic while also lacking in variety in the midsection (the xylophone solo in Gone Daddy Gone was an unexpected thing to hear and I appreciate them putting that in there to shake the track up), with Gano's vocals whining over instrumentals that leave more to be desired from a four person band. On the other hand, it makes sense, and it makes this album experience better. For an album about the angst and heartbreak of growing up, played by a band of young musicians experiencing that angst, it wouldn't make sense for this album to be 'perfect'. Angst is not pleasant, so why should this album always be pleasant? Getting in your face with an acoustic guitar while shoddy vocals shout at you is what the tone this album needs to be. As well, for every moment in the album that's 'unpleasant', it's followed up by something more enjoyable. For example, I think the vocals in Please Do Not Go are not good, but the a capella opening in Add It Up was really cool and well done, and hearing the ballad of Good Feeling after listening to a very weak second half was a good way to wrap up the album. Brian Ritchie shines in this, using an acoustic bass tone and letting him go crazy on each song was a good idea.
A mix of some good songs and some real boring ones.
Definitely not an album I would have ever listened to on my own! Not mad just kinda waiting for a song to really jump out at me, Love the band in the back. The band is probably my favorite part
best album ever
Some funky rock idk how I feel about it
Little too "dark" for my taste in terms of lyrics, however the instrumental of the songs are quite enjoyable while having a very interesting theme across the ablum. My favorite song in the album would be Add it up.
Expected female singers at first with the name being violent femmes. The song was alright, Folk Punk is a decent genre. I particularly liked "Kiss Off" but I didn't like the last two songs all that much, they leaned a little more punky than the rest. Overall not an awful album but nothing too interesting either. 61/100 (This does not fit well with my other scorings)
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Some songs I loved some I did not. A bit too much talking singing in some parts but also loved the upbeat guitar parts
Indie divertido, probablemente este fue precursor de muchas otras bandas indie 3.5
really fun; i can just picture people in the 80s dancing to this at a party or something favorite tracks: add it up confessions
cool grungy vibes, honestly didn’t get real interesting til the second half of the album, favs: blister in the sun, prove my love (fav on whole album), promise, gives suburb garage rock band
I was surprised that acoustic music could sound so punk! Releasing an acoustic punk album in the early ’80s is surprising, to say the least—they must have really gone against the mainstream. I would have guessed this album was released in at least the ’90s. I only knew “Blister in the Sun,” which is a good track, but it didn’t prepare me for the rest of the album. Although I didn’t find all the tracks equally strong, they were at least enjoyable. I mean, the xylophone solo on “Gone Daddy Gone” is so much fun. Mid 3.
Fun listen, I think I’m not the biggest violent femmes fan so wasn’t my fave. But I’m glad it exists!!!
sweet
A classic. Kiss off into the air.
It did get better after the first track
I know Michael will enjoy this one if/when he ever reaches this point in the challenge
Wait, this album is from 1982? For my entire existence, I've walked the Earth thinking the Violent Femmes were a 90s band. There's some pretty solid stuff on this album, but it feels like they have one trick and just keep doing it over and over again. At least it's a pretty decent trick
One of college favorites, have cooled on it in the intervening years. Gano was definitely eighteen when he wrote this! I like their next album, Hallowed Ground, a fair bit more than this one but I do love how novice this feels. Simple, simple arrangements that are incredibly catchy. Gano's voice is strange and feels like it's made of straw. The instrumentation bend to meet him where he can go & he can hit some really odd registers. There are yips and yelps here that almost extend out to full yodels. Always like the bridge on Kiss Off "one, one, one cause you left me and two, two, two for my family" and of course Prove My Love's "third verse, same as the first!" Cheeky Ramones reference, perfectly allusion to the bands elemental strengths. Favorite Tracks: Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, Prove My Love, Gone Daddy Gone
not my fav…
i want to love the violent femmes but i really just like them, the album drags a little sometimes in being repetitive. hopefully future albums will be different.
Definitely got Midwest emo vibes with a heavy mix of rock. I think this album may have inspired modern Midwest emo (since it’s from the 80s). Add It Up and Confessions were my favorite songs from the album, with other notable tracks being Prove My Love and Promise. Whoever played the guitar was doing a great job, one of the more excellent features of th album. Lowkey I heard a lot of yb in Confessions. Ooh also the cover is tough.
I really liked the lyrics, not a big fan of the melody or the singer voice tho. Addictions and girls. Rock atw
instrumental ótimo, mas vocalista mid + cadê as femmes + me lembra sex pistols e buzzcocks que eu amo, mas falta rock, tá misturado com um folk que não sou a maior fã
Surprisingly good!
Escuchable. Ya conocía canción “Blister in the sun” “Gone daddy gone” Cancion sorpresa: “gimme the car”
everything was unexpected. riascolterei volentieri quasi tutto.
Pretty good
Hmmm interessant, men ikke det beste jeg har hørt til nå
Great instrumentals, but most of the songs were kind of disturbing.
por qué cuatro hombres se llaman violent femmes? not bad, not good... sin más
I see the vision
Big hands I know you’re the one is an all time fav lyric of mine ❤️🔥 Such angsty 20 yr old white boy music but that’s ok, they need a way to feel too!
Really liked this one! Always hated ‘Blister in the Sun’ (still don’t like it) and always liked ‘Please Do Not Go’ and found that I really liked every other song. It felt nostalgic in a weird way like I had actually listened to the whole album from beginning to end like this at some point.
vind vooral t eereste nummer, add it up, promise en gone daddy gone tot nu toe het leukste
Not my favorite, I’m neutral on it
fun
I expected a woman's voice for some reason. I like the bass a lot, not sure on the voice yet. On some songs it fits, some are bit too whiny for me.
Good Feeling is definitely my favorite on this album, “Dear Lady, just a little longer.” Overall, I can’t say I was surprised; this is exactly what I would expect from a 1983 album called Violent Femmes. Not the most danceable album, but certainly a fun one. I did shed some tears. This album was also a little filthy, but in a fun way. This album is multi-faceted but fun. LOTS OF GOOD DRUMS! Not something I would listen to on any day, but still so good and fun, I love that people make music!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ .9 stars
acc quite vibey!! got a little funky, dance-around-my-room kinda thing going on, great background for cleaning my room or something!!
very midwest emo vocals but also reminds me of jack white and oddly enough the pixies lol
The music is funky, was great for a busy morning. Not my favorite though, the last song gave me an ick, dunno. It was okay, but not gonna listen again. 5/10
Reminds me of my high school best friend- he looked ¨Blister in the Sun.¨ Worth it for the nostalgia factor alone. Can't say an album's worth of that voice does it for me, but I can respect it.
1 star. Not for me. 1 star doesnt mean 1 star out of all albums but its a rating put in the context of what is supposed to be the best 1001 albums.
Thought it was okay, a few songs I enjoyed. Overall not for me
I'm on the last song as I'm writing this. I don't mind it. It's good for background play. I was jotting some stuff down while listening to it. It sounds familiar to the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks, probably cause its from the same era.
Maybe like 3.3. Not really my thing, but enjoyed more than expected -- could be right if looking for offbeat angst. Would listen to more by them
Not my fave indie rock but not bad
When it came out this album was just a year or two early for me to access its angsty, nerdy, horny charms. I now feel like it's a party that sounds fun if nervy in a flat two floors up that I would feel ridiculous trying to gate crash.
норм, но не впечатлен.
6/10 - sounds much more modern than 1983. quietly impressed but they start off with their best song which is hard to beat further into the album
solid uh... 3?
Not my thing, but nice
Like a lot of people, I'd only ever heard Blister in the Sun before hearing the album in full now. Everything else on the album is good, but not nearly as catchy. Except for maybe Gone Daddy Gone despite its repetitiveness.
Energetic and earnest
Gross Pointe Blank is a movie I have seen maybe 100 times and for some reason in my mind was one of the great movies ever made. If you have not seen it, John Cusak plays a hired killer and decides to go back to his 10 year HS reunion, where he strikes up an old fling with his ex-gf Mini Driver. As the years went on I realized the rest of the world did not hold this movie in the same regard. I now realize one of the reasons I loved this movie was the music andddd Blister in The Sun is one of those songs (along with many other classics). All this to say - great song, way to go Violent Femmes. The rest of the album was pretty whiny. I like the idea of folk punk and it works here and there, overall they didnt really land the plane on most of these songs. Nailed the first track though!
Stands out from the crowd of other 1983 albums. I loved the stripped down sound and weird vocals Big fan of Good Feeling.
My dad's cousin is a small-time music producer in Milwaukee - has worked with Phil Collins, Live, Sean Lennon, AND Violent Femmes, amongst a few others. I got to go to his studio a couple of times growing up as an early teen, right around the time I was starting to learn guitar, and got to mess around in the same space that those guys once recorded. One of the most serendipitous random generations so far - happen to be in Milwaukee for less than 24 hours this weekend while I was listening to this.
Difficult one this. For a start I thought they were a Riot Grrl band which was quickly put to bed when Blister in the Sun, a song it turns out I knew, came on. I liked a fair bit of this but it was a bit like pink without overdrive at times. And other times it was - as ever - too American. Lots of Velvet Underground in there. Some good bass too. But not all I loved.
Blister in the sun is incredible. I was really looking forward to this album. But the rest of it is like a teenage boys fantasy or something. The bass parts sound cool, very attacky, but the guitar parts on all the other songs were fairly generic, blister in the sun has a cool riff, nothing similar is elsewhere. It's not like I hated this, I just had higher hopes considering how interesting and unique the big single was.
Another "fine" album...I'm giving a lot of 3s here
Cool vibe! De har mycket känsla, men jag bara dras inte till den här typen av musik. Jag vill ha folk, inte folk/punk eller punk för den delen :p
Another reviewer called it acoustic punk and I think that's a decent summary of the album.
I love the instrumentals. But the lyrics and delivery strike me as proto-incel rhetoric. :/
I'm not sure what to make of this. On one hand I think they were 10-15 years ahead of their time. On the other hand some of the songs are pretty bad, besides a handful of great ones. It does have a couple of great ones. Favorite song: add it up
Ohhh, these are the Violent Femmes?? I had an ex that would whisper-screech "day ... AFTER DAY... I get ANGRY..." Just as well. Blister In The Sun is irresistible, as is Gone Daddy Gone and the Kiss Off chorus.
Some bangers, some mehs
Bien. Pas l'habitude d'écouter ce genre de musique mais j'ai apprécié
Snotty bratty band with some catchy tunes
Hard to keep going after a banging start like that
Not my kind of music, first few songs all sounded very similarly then album picked up a bit
3/5
This is about what I expected
3
Cover 6.5 Good album. Not great. There are some serious gems but interspersed with some mediocre duds. The duds are somewhat tolerable but duds nonetheless.
Du punk accoustique. Fun à petites doses.
Folk punk! Honest stuff. 3/5
Pretty solid album which I should probably give another listen. Probably deserves a higher score than I’ve given it
Correcto
good tunes. some i recognised but had no idea were by these guys
Had a couple bangers.
This suffered a bit from me just not really being in the mood for it lol sorry If I can put my shitty mood to one side for a minute though I can hear that this is good so I’m gonna give it 3.5 and maybe come back to it on another day when I’m not a dickhead
Blister in the sun. Loud and harsh. Like a blister in the sun
This is definitley the sort of thing that I need to be in the right mood to get through. I'm usually one to become agrieved by slopiness, but there's something unusually offensive about some of the performances here, which are of course coupled with purposefully careless production. However, there are some very good tracks, it's just a shame that their momentum doesn't carry the whole thing along. Ultimately, middle of the road for me.
Blister in the sun! My so-called life! Never heard the rest. Some of the lyrics are cringe ‚why can’t I get just one kiss/screw/fuck‘ and downright scary. Emo fuckboy vibe from the 80s, I guess they‘ve always existed.
Every song sounds the same.... granted it's a good song, but yeah.
blister in the sun is rockin, the rest is bleh, shout out to life is strange true colors.
I went to high school with their current sax player! (there's nowhere else I can brag about this) It was ok, some nice tracks. Veers into the "talking instead of singing" I don't enjoy. 3* Highlights: blister in the sun (classic), prove my love (60s vibes) Lowlights: gimme the car (jesus wtf) (this song alone made me debate giving it 2/5)
3.5
7/10
Had to listen twice to appreciate the effort. The bass lines were very clever and pulled everything together.
Genius sound (the bass is unbelievable) and a few great tracks here including the signature Blister in the Sun. Works quite well as a full record and fascinated by some of the stylistic choices here (the track where they slip into an almost reggae style was out of the blue), but about half of this wasn't for me as much. Still can't believe the year this came out and I do like a lot of folk punk that follows so have to pay my respects here.
My only exposure to the Violent Femmes before this was Blister In the Sun, of course. Hearing more from them the vocals strike me as especially flat and proto-emo. Despite this, I liked parts. Add It Up was pretty great.
Give the guy what he wants he sounds desperate
Today i fell Violeeeent De name gfallt mir besser als d musik. Isch eher e klassische 3er, da wirdi chum na mal drizappe. Mal was anders mit biz pönky rock, aber halt nöd so fire. 1mal glosst und ab in staubsammler aka violent staubsuger
Could be a genuinely fantastic album if they stopped singing more
3.5
3.0
wow
I don't always know what to do w/ 'cute' things, especially when the object essentially satisfies both definitions of the adjective: a cunning or shrewd commodity, on the one hand, and something that's immaturely attractive, on the other. That's Violent Femmes's eponymous debut in a nutshell, a record that's simultaneously clever and innocent, sharp-witted and yet wet behind the ears. Some of the tracks here I can get down w/, even enjoy in a real way, especially 'Please Do Not Go,' 'Confessions,' and 'Good Feeling.' +, it impresses me that this came out in the early 80s, foreshadowing a 90s aesthetics embodied by acts like Neutral Milk Hotel. But it also fails to do much for me - they aren't a wannabe VU, but come on, they kinda are, dig?
Some interesting stuff, but trying too hard to be edgy
Remarkable album but flawed by the vocals which really can get annoying after a couple of songs. There are some stand outs here and I can see how it ended up on this list. Some heavy influence on future bands.
7.3
3.5 stars
Es un sonido muy peculiar. Como un ensayo en una habitación de un grupo punk. Pero cantan bien y tienen buenas melodías. De hecho, suena muy muy actual.
Dangerous Lipstick Lesbians.
Good homework chill music
The good songs on here were pleasantly weird and a fun listen. However, the album was dragged down significantly by the inconsistent song quality and misogynistic lyrics (I understand these were a product of their time, but they were still uncomfortable to listen to).
3.5
This one is not really for me, the acoustic punk slacker thing was fine but wasn't really exciting me.
It was interesting and somewhat enjoyable, but I don't know what I should make out of it. Not bad though
Would give a 3.5 if I could. "Blister in the Sun" is obviously a classic, as is "Gone Daddy Gone." The rest of it is kind of a muddle.
Best Song: Blister in the Sun Blister in the Sun is great, the rest of the album is pretty non-eventful. 3/5.
yeah ok had a few decent songs but all were very samey
I'll give it a 3 as there's nothing on the list quite like it but i wouldn't listen again
Really enjoyed this new york 80s post punk pop smash
Wow, good feeling is one of the best songs ive ever heard. I hated a lot of the test of this album tbh, would have been a 2. Gone daddy gone just makes me pine for Gnarls. Parts of this album unfortunately gives “undertones” vibe. Bur good feeling bumps it up to a THREE.
Enjoyed the album. Haven't listened fully before. Will listen to again.
3.5 stars
Great
Prima
Weird album, 2 bangers, hated the rest. Also THUG 2 tune <3
These guys went to Waukesha North High School, which is right where I grew up. I went to West, as I wasn't in a legendary band, and thus couldn't attend Waukesha North High School.
Good starter song. The rest is alright
Somewhat Chaotic mix of folky instruments and style with punky spirit and approach. It’s got that early 80s alt rock thing where bands were unique and freer. They were messy and great and also kinda sucked, and it was cool. Anyway…The lyrics and vocal delivery strike somewhere between Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, Bob Dylan, and an awkward teen. Acoustics bass parts are a highlight. For 3 dudes using acoustic instruments, the results can be surprisingly cacophonous and messy - but they can also play with dynamics and get soft and tight. I like listening to it, but don’t crave it much other than Blister in the Sun.
very good. feeling a 3.8.
Absolutely legendary track, worth a three in my book
It's good but not very memorable. Not a lot of standout tracks just a bunch of solid tracks
Respect but not my style
If I had heard this album 30 years ago I would probably have been a big fan. As it is I enjoyed it, I just feel like I would have appreciated it much more at 18.
An album that feels like it was comprised of songs that'd been rattling around in someones head for years. The subject matter on the album feels pretty diverse (not always to the album's benefit) but the main saving grace on this album is the instrumentals. The bass playing is consistently great on here, and with fun suprises like the xylophone on "Gone Daddy Gone", the album remains sonically interesting throughout. "Blister In The Sun" is the best song on the album.
punk folk
For a five year period in the 80s, every college kid in America played 5 songs on this album, and ignored the other 5. The other 5 make me not go back to it on the regular. Good...not great.
aw
His voice is a bit annoying
more entertaining than expected, liked maybe two of them
An album with some high highs and low lows. Overall I liked what they were doing with their take on the punk sound though. Standout tracks were Blister in the Sun and Probe My Love. Unfortunately there were too many “lows” to go much higher than a 3.
Acoustic but punky, bright but uneasy. Why didn’t I know this band? Blister in the sun got me hooked—time to check their albums.
some good songs but man it's just not my jam
One hit wonder? The other songs are pretty cool too. Cool xylophone solo! Some nice bass too
De har hittat en egen stil med sitt halvakustiska garagesound. Överlag bra låtmaterial, men utförandet emellanåt lite svajigt.
With hits like blister in the sun and add it up, this is a good listen. Vibes match a rebel party
Liked this one. Blister In The Sun is a classic. Vocals in most of the songs remind me of Harley Poe in Have a Great Life which is an album I love. Best song: Blister In The Sun Notable(s): Add It Up, Kiss Off
Did you also first hear of the Violent Femmes from a Sabrina the Teenage Witch episode?
Good fun, like a sillier version of the pixies.
Fajne, dużo gitar, melodyjne, ale 3/5, bo zbyt angażujące
Big fan of blister in the sun, cool album
This is a weird one for me. Yes, the signing is generally subpar. The acoustic guitar and drumming are pretty basic. It wants to be punk but doesn't truly get close to that level. But that bass! And the fact that they don't seem to take things too seriously ("and your happy, this is only a guess"). It all just kind of works. To a point at least. This isn't an amazing album, but I kind of dug it for some strange reason. It's like a movie that sucked at the box office in the theaters but then achieved cult classic. It takes a while to find its audience, but when it does, that audience stands fiercely by it.
Fun album, I do think it's a little bit shouty at times and not in a good way. Highlights: Blister In The Sun, Good Feeling
honestly just cool and fun vibes, i like the first 3 tracks.
Fun frat music.
Phenomenal album. However, I realize I can’t listen to Violent Femmes if I’m stressed or in a bad mood.
I definitely would’ve pegged this as a 90’s grunge-ish album, so I guess it’s ahead of its time.
Cool sound but a bit too abrasive for me
alright
Not really my thing but it is good
Very Velvet Underground forward, sounds rather timestuck with a sound from the previous 2 decades with some injections of more modern themes.
Not too bad, but a lot of the songs are just about wanting a girl and doing things to her. Low 3/5.
Rv/G
Not outstanding but pretty good, and it has a kind of 'acoustic punk' sound to down to a T. That whole quirky, lo-fi DIY aesthetic sounds 10 years ahead of its time too.
It’s crazy this came out in the early 80s not my favorite album, but it is so unique even though some songs are skippable. I enjoyed this album for what it is.
Early alternative, biting Lou Reed pretty hard. Not bad though
Solid album cool vibes…gets a bit redundant.
Solid, peppy OG cuts
Pre-listening thoughts: there are NO women in this group called Violent FEMMES. I (lesbian) am so disappointed Post/during listening thoughts: OH these are the Blister in the Sun dudes. Yeah okay. So this is a genre blend of like acoustic and punk. I can dig it. Sometimes I feel like the main dude can't REALLY sing but it's not the end of the world. This was okay, I don't think I'd come back to it. 5.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Blister in the Sun, Please Do Not Go, Ugly Least fav tracks: Confessions
One banger and some interesting cuts.
Listens: 2 Standout tracks: Blister In The Sun, Gone Daddy Gone Raw, stripped down, post-punk with minimal instrumentation and interesting vocals to say the least. I had no idea Blister In The Sun was a 50 year old track. I'd heard it on the radio and assumed it was much more recent. Like something Cage The Elephant would put out. In fact, this band reminds me of Cage The Elephant, just with less instrumentation and polish.
7/10
Another okay album. Nothing too crazy… 3/5
Well, there is Blister in the Sun which is pretty good and catchy, but the rest is mediocre until Ugly (bonus track, so it doesn't really count). At least now I know this isn't a girl group.
One hit wonder. Emo kids
They used to play “Blister in the Sun” at lights-up at Perth’s indie nightclub, Amplifier Bar. I was never there to see it, but it’s the sort of thing I found so fundamentally unfunny that Violent Femmes, as a band in their entirety, became collateral damage. Fun dude. That’s a shame for me, as the next track on their 1983 album – “Kiss Off” – would have almost certainly disabused me of my overly-earnest opinions, and might have even cheered me up a bit in the process. This is a fine album. It feels a touch unbalanced, maybe – the first half being much stronger than the second – but that also might just be because the whole “I’m horny and frustrated” thing stars to grate after a while (wearing as thin as thoroughly dry humped pants, one might be tempted to conclude). I hear moments that will later find further vent in a whole constellation of American indie bands, from Bright Eyes to Cloud Nothings; raw, tuneful, full of that specific cheerful-cynical swaggering attitude unique to American punk. A record gratefully rescued from the dustbin of my own history. And as for the onanism … well. Sometimes you just have to hold up your hands and acknowledge that lights up or not, it’s you that’s the wanker.
I had heard blister in the sun Favorite song: blister in the sun
probably the most 90s album from the 80s, a lot of it seems very sarcastic and tongue-in-cheek. not really sure what it is with this book's obsession with albums that sound like a bunch of teenagers fooling around in their garage, but at least this time it's at least somewhat intentional. favorite song: "blister in the sun" overall: 6/10
Couple of bangers. Interesting blend of grunge and surfer rock.
Totally decent; burns its best songs first then fades into (genre-defining?) punk standards
Too horny
While I find the idea of 'folk-punk' interesting, I didn't find this album appealing enough to me. The point of this record is that the songs share some elements of punk rock and new wave (or at least the majority of them), but they're primarily played using acoustic guitars. Because of this, most of the songs don't make a big impact of me. There're some really fun songs, but overall, I'm not a big fun of this music. At least the production is really well done and the album sound very clean.
I didn’t like all the songs but the first one is a summer classic.
Took me back to high school
Ok
Not bad. Usually I’m not a big fan of horrible voices, but this one works somehow. I enjoyed the album mostly. Things started getting a little monotonous after a while, but overall it was pretty decent and catchy.
I had a lot of fun with the beginning section of this album for what I feel are obvious reasons. There is certainly a lot I enjoyed here but it tapered off toward the end for me. Overall quite solid.
Fun punk music. I appreciate how it sounds like they’re having so much fun on the album. I think every song may have been about getting laid. Enjoyed it !
Raucous, immature, and just plain fun. Violent Femmes radiates dead end angst but avoids the cynicism and depressing overtones often present in punk music. There are a few catchy tunes here too. Blister in the Sun is a classic, and Please Don’t Go got a few plays. I like the sound enough, and really enjoy what the band were going for. I can’t help but feel you have to be in the right mood for these tunes though. Nevertheless, it’s a high three. ✨
Sometimes groovy, but did not like it very much: not so interesting
Ist gut aber an manchen Stellen auch nervig mit der spartanischen, experimentellen Instrumentals. 3/5
Good but not great.
Not my favorite, I enjoyed some of it. It definitely seems ahead of it's time.
OK
I believe Elizabeth and I saw this band at Summerfest in Milwaukee in the late 70’s. The hits here are great, but some of the others sound pretty similar to them, so that’s disappointing. Always love it when Blister In The Sun is in a TV show or movie.
I liked it

Overall very fun Acoustic surf rock with a punk ethos. I thought this was from the 90s! Bass is doing a lot of the work. Only most of the songs are about an unfulfilled desire for sex. It's the Blister in the Sun album. 1 listen favorite: Kiss Off
Some good songs. Not a fan of the vocals.
Way ahead of its time. 90s alt bands must've loved this album. Full of verve and personality. The bass and low-end guitar work is my favorite part. Would probably grow on me with future listens.
Not bad. Pretty well what i expected from the songs that I knew
-really interesting.. today i learned what band made Blister In The Sun i guess. the blending of folk and punk is cool as hell, it captivated me a lot more than i thought it would -will need to hear this one again honestly but it’s sitting at a very solid 3.5 -Favorites are Blister In The Sun and Confessions
Overall enjoyed the album but not something I would throw on ever again. Obviously Blister In The Sun is the one exception to this, top tier song. The guy is jsut a little too whiny and annoying for me at times but I did enjoy most of the songs sometimes jsut because they were funny. Particularly Add It Up, Gone Daddy Gone, and Gimmie The Car. I think we’ve all been sexually frustrated with a woman before and straight up asked her Why Can’t I Jsut get One Fuck. The same goes with straight up asking your dad to gimme the car because I need to have sex with the local tramp since it has AC vs. my car with no AC.
First? 3,5/5 Again? 2,5/5
Good, enjoyed it 3.5
Violent Femmes is an album that i have somewhat mixed feelings on. I definitely didn't hate it but it wasn't something i really loved either. It does feel quite a bit different from a lot of the other punk albums i have heard on this project with this one feeling more acoustic than a lot of the others. The music here is pretty good albeit a bit forgettable as there is not a whole lot of differentiation between the songs with them only having a few interesting moments. The lyrics are not all that great either due to some of them feeling more perverted than i would have wanted. It is still a pretty decent album but its not one that i really want to go back to. Best Song: Add It Up Worst Song: Gimme the Car
Turns out I like acoustic punk more than electric. Also, I never realized Adam Sandler is totally doing a Gordon Gano imitation when he sings. The acoustic bass makes these songs. I learned that the lyric is "like I blister in the sun" and not "like a blister in the sun." I don't know what a blister in the sun is, always thought it was one of those nonsensical, poetic lyrics, but, no, it actually made some sense. Anyhow, good stuff. I don't recall hearing it all at the time, but glad I've heard it now.
Os antecessores do The Hives?
Started rocky and then got softer but was nice 6/10
ok
My first time listening to the folk punk genre. Quite interesting. But not my thing at all. The breakdown at the end of Add It Up was great though. Would I revisit: maybe.
Only listened to half the album. Got a great start. But it got pretty bleak after a few tracks and had to move on. Too emo for me at the moment !
Good album, very raw
This really felt like an album that had to hit at the right time - like I'm sure if I'd heard this as a teen I'd have really connected with it, but now it just didn't really do anything for me. However, I did appreciate how varied the tracks on this were and a couple definitely stood out to me (including the obviously quite famous opening track)
Lots of personality. Great singer. Great bass sound.

Ok
Acoustic punk, huh. My teacher used to call me that! This website's been really in the mood to give me punk albums. This was good! I feel like I need to listen further to really grasp the album, but off first listen it was decently enjoyable. 7/10
Love the style. If it was a little more PG (or more subtle at least) I’d listen to them a lot!
Meh
The lo-fi aspect can be hit or miss. Some catchy songs, I forgot how many were about murder
After listening to this album I know I've heard it in its entirety at some point in my life. No clue when though. Almost every song I recognized. Still it wasn't really up my alley, but it was fun enough.
está bien, se pone medio insoportable por momentos
Don’t like this guys voice Bored out of my mind Might’ve been better if I was in a worse mood
Although I'd be perfectly happy never hearing "Blister In The Sun" again, the rest of the album is actually pretty great.
Pretty good punk rock but it was fairly similar throughout and some of the instrumentals weren’t interesting enough to keep me engaged
Always liked the early 80’s new wave/ punk sound.
Strange but also kind of cool
There's some great stuff here musically, 3.5 rounded down. I like the raw teenager energy and some of the guitar work. "To the Kill" is a beautiful song and I'm glad 1001 albums introduced this to me. Though I like the youthful energy, some of that may be revealed in the lyrics though in a negative way - side eyeing the lyrics in "Gimme The Car." "Add it Up" is similar, but it makes up for it with the raw chorus "Dayyyy after dayyyyy...".
Maybe it's the era I grew up in, but many of these very early slacker rock/pop albums make me think the albums were genuinely prepared in a matter of hours. I want complexity that feels effortless and lazy on the surface, not simple carefree tunes. Nevertheless I enjoyed this album other than the song about drugging girls. There were some Pixie-esque vocals which was appreciated. 3/5
Blister in the sun is great
I don't think I've ever heard acoustic punk before. Not my genre but I could appreciate the concept
Some good songs, no doubt very influential but I'm 30 years too late I guess.
3/5
Favorite track: gone daddy gone. Overall score: 5.3/10
Good album. Never heard of it or the band, but I liked it
Iconic opening track but the rest of the album wasn't particularly memorable for me. Standard alternative tunes, but I'll acknowledge that it sounds much more modern than it was so that's impressive.
I wavered on this album, and I feel I have some bias coming into it. I was playing in a band in the late 80's and got so fed up of hearing 'Blister in the Sun' being aggressively strummed by anyone with an acoustic guitar regardless of talent. Its definitely tainted my enjoyment of this album. I gave it a 4 and then had to remove a star for 'Bluster in the sun'. Its very unjust, I know, but trauma is unjust.
Too often I found myself annoyed at this singer's voice, so I can't quite give it the 4 id like to. Maybe a few more listens will do me good. Good feeling is a particularly lovely song.
I know that one song from baseball The rest is pretty mid
Really good album and enjoyed all the songs
Reminds me of Lou Reed, Pixies, and T. Rex. I actually really liked the song "Gimme the Car" (even though I didn’t like it at first). I already knew the song "Blister in the Sun"; it’s a fun song! I also liked "Kiss Off" and "Ugly." I probably wouldn’t have listened to this album, so I’m glad I did!
Blister in the sun and kiss off 10/10. Like a snare drum is in my left ear, a loose string base guitar in my right ear, and a schizo voice dead centre in the cranium. The baby voice in please do not go is an automatic one star reduction. Add it up is foul. Swings back into the very good with confessions and to the kill. The rest is mid screeching.
whats interesting is that you could release this album in the mid 2000's, put a bunch of the songs on the Garden State soundtrack and I wouldnt be any the wiser. I suppose that makes it timeless, or ahead of its time? Outside of Blister in the Sun I didnt really vibe with any of the other songs. I figure you have to really be into that indie rock sound to truly enjoy this, its not bad or anything, just takes itself a bit too serious, also a lot of repetitive bass lines, and the vocal tones tend to wear thin. That being said it makes me feel like I'm im my early 20's living in Vancouver again.
I recognize this first song! Brown out Hey it’s that song Gnarls Barkley covered! The end
Heard before. One you hear you know it.
meh

Groupe inconnu. =>3/5
This is fun for a while. Not going to be a new favorite. For some reason I always picture Bobcat Goldthwait playing in this band.
Keith - 6.5/10 Caylum - 6/10
Bouncy in an early ‘80s post-punk way and a little boring - first track was familiar but the album didn’t hold my interest.
After blister in the sun… eh
It cannot be denied; the sound of violent femmes is fun. A glazey wall of wobbly, folky, bouncy, and intentionally imprecise folk punk rock. Lyrically lacking in depth, but isn’t that kind of the point? Look at the big picture here: juvenile, offensive, and crass desires go hand in hand with the sonic landscape.
Violent Femmes sounds like it was designed as the Gen X response to the cocaine-addled "more is always better" grindset of the 80s. This casual, intentionally low-effort blending of 70s folk rock with punk sensibilities helped pave the way for modern alt-rock. While I understand the universal need to communicate the loneliness we all feel sometimes, as a woman in her mid-30s, it's hard for me to relate to the specific expression of that loneliness made by an 18-year-old boy starved for sex. As a lover of alt-rock in general, I am pleased by the foundations of the genre I see in this album. Favorite track: Kiss Off 3.5/5 stars
This sounds much newer than it is
It's okay
Está bien, pup rock , pero no es mi estilo , 3 estrellas
Fun album. some classic tunes.
These guys have such a distinctive sound. Bass and guitar and great lyrics. I like what they’re doing. I’m good for about 30 minutes of it, but then it’s time to move on.
Gets a bit formulaic at times but they definitely have their own sound.

Meh not that good tbh😂 maybe I’m just not in the rock mood but I’m supposed to like this but god this shit can be so ass at times. For example take a listen to the last song that is so shit. Just all blended together but like that’s because it all sounded the same and had no variation. Some good songs don’t get me wrong but pretty mid tbh. Add It Up was the best song but I just didn’t like the vocals on most songs. A calm 4.6/10 2.3/5 05/04/26 review: I listen to this probably over a month ago and do enjoy it. Blister in the sun is the obvious outlier, outshining the whole album but the rest wasn’t that bad. Yeah it could be called boring but idk I just liked how chill it all was. Blister in the sun is ofc my favourite song. 6/10 3/5
