Good album. Really picks up in the second half!
Really enjoyed.
the pumpkins are always welcome, i love how all the edge and grit in most of the music makes something sweeter and softer like Disarm have that much more weight
Loving this! Definitely my style. Reminds me a bit of Pearl Jam as well. Need deep dive. 4 star
Great album. Stays on one tone all the way through, though.
Big fan of this one, great punch right from the start that holds up all the way through! never listened much to smashing pumpkins before but I feel like this album could have been a template for a lot of my top albums.
Ok this was great, better than I expected it to be, all the songs are good and enjoyable. 8.9/10.
Half of the songs are really really great, half go in one ear and out the other. I can't stand the singing. The great songs are great enough for 4 stars. Favorite song: disarm.
The highlights of this album really shine and are defining songs of the era. The deep cuts uhhhhhh are pretty middling. They all sound the same, same guitar tones, same lyrical ideas. Nothing really shines on them.
Corgan's voice is an acquired taste but generally works with his songs. The drum work is great. Production is really good too. A bit samey with the quiet-loud trope, but still a strong album. Highlights: "Cherub Rock" (that buildup then release, great opener), "Today", "Rocket" (cool repeating guitar riff), "Disarm" (gorgeous in its over-the-topness), "Soma" (Pink Floyd vibe in soft part, then loud part kicks in around 3:50), "Mayonaise" (loudly wistful)
Ok, the producer here is the same guy who worked on Nevermind, and you can really feel that quality he did his job, it’s fire. Billy Corgan’s writing is sharp, emotional, and surprisingly relatable. He pours so much of himself into these songs, and you can feel that intensity in every word. The guitar layers on this record are insane. The sound is so thick, dreamy, and heavy at the same time. it’s like walls of guitars crashing together but still melodic and beautiful. That’s what makes the album so special: it balances raw heaviness with this emotional vulnerability that pulls you in. Overall, the album keeps a consistently high quality all the way through. There’s no real drop-off, just a flow of great tracks one after another. So many songs stand out, from the big anthems to the more intimate cuts. It’s that pure ‘90s alternative sound done perfectly.
Really enjoyed this
Rating: 4/5 | Favorite Track: Today --- Even though I'm not too into 90's grunge and similar alt rock, this is still a really solid album.
Great 90s rock, gritty, heavy tones and great vocals, mixed with anthemic passionate songs like disarm or today, where you can feel the hurt. Great album
A really good album! But it's a little too long. I get tired by the time there are 3-4 tracks left.
pretty good album some soft and hard songs with meaningful lyrics
Today is Today is Today is
± one star
Sometimes I forget just how monolithic the Pumpkins are in 90s soft rock. Between this album and its follow up, there's like 10 all timers. Genuinely crazy. Anyways, Billy Corgan's voice is the only thing ever holding this record back. If it works it works, if it doesn't my ears bleed. Fortunately for all parties, he's got a good streak for this album; pretty much every song works with his voice, and for tracks like Disarm, I think it works even better with his unique sound than it would for a more typical singing style. In the right place and at the right time, I think this album would be a 5 star listen. Today just happens to not be that place nor time, but even then it's an excellent listen.
Always had a weird relationship with Smashing Pumpkins... This album had a very grunge vibe with a mix of Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains (two bands I love deeply). It began and ended very well. I really liked the album and the atmosphere it produced upon listening to this while it was somewhat a sunny day. Towards the end I think I finally solidified what I wanted to get from this album and what it achieved. It's a freaking 🤘🏻 album. Loved it. Fave Songs: - Cherub Rock (a masterpiece opening track) - Quiet - Rocket - Disarm (so beautiful) - Soma - Geek USA - Mayonaise (amazing track) - Silverfuck (goes hard) Definitely needs a second lesson to appreciate the lyrics I think, and even the instrumentals I didn't hear. I love the use of violins scattered with different songs. Or perhaps it's a different instrument? Maybe keyboard? I don't know. It just sounded so good. Really really good.
You can always tell when you’re listening to a Smashing Pumpkins song. My only complaint, though, is that sometimes it’s hard to tell which song that is until they reach the chorus. And even then it’s often hard to distinguish one from another.
The best songs here are not better than the best from Mellon Collie, but this is tighter.
Some good songs. I seem to have liked it more back in the 90's though. I think Billy's voice grates on me more now than it did 30 years ago, for whatever reason. 3.5* rounding up for nostalgia.
What a great sound. Don't really know any Smashing Pumpkins music but love the solid sound of the guitars. A revelation and will certainly look out for more!
Quite nice.
Long but enjoyable, recognized a couple of hits from here
This is my kinda 90s album, the loud guitars with so many effects you can barely tell if its rock or metal anymore, or how psychedelic it gets, the tight songwriting and pretty sound. I'm not someone who listens to TSP often (in fact I only really listened to their stuff like two years ago) but I know I can't stop myself from letting one of these songs play, or the best songs on Mellon Collie or Adore. So this was a treat for me, and as close as I can get to stuff that's really and truly my taste.
What this list is making me realise is just how much my taste is shaped by exposure/nostalgia etc. I really enjoyed this album, I;d heard of SP of course but hadn't listened to them before. I really enjoyed it but I'm sure if I was more familiar this would be 5* but for now it's a 4.
As my musical tastes vastly broadened in the early 21st Century and I began to take the musical blinkers off, I really got into the Smashing Pumpkins. Love the slowness, darkness and bass heavy sound throughout this album, then regularly mid song; it kicks off with an even bigger sound. A real emotional roller-coaster of music, riddled with the expected text book stories of dramas, drug/alcohol addiction, deaths, big egos & temper tantrums from the band members you'd associate with this musical environment. Mayonnaise is my favourite track from this album. Almost a 5, but not quite.
Killer record, not a bad song on there. I prefer this over their Mellon Collie
“hummer” and "silverfuck" are masterpieces love the balance between heavy and softer / more tender music close to the type of music i’m leaning towards making not the biggest fan of the singer’s voice the sequencing of the album works really well
Cherub Rock Today Disarm Mayonaise
Homer Simpson, smiling politely
It's between this and MCATIS as to which is my fave Smashing Pumpkins album. I heard MCATIS first, but I think Siamese Dream is a more condensed and better album to showcase 90s Smashing Pumpkins without any fluff. To me this album is one of the albums to point to the sound of the 90s.
really enjoyed this, such a classic and a super influential sound for its time. 8/10
The Good: Aggressive vegetables!!! The Bad: I am more of a meat person… The Ugly: Trying to figure out where the Siamese Dream is attached? Okay, so the above is weak… but that’s because I don’t know what to say. Lately I have been dealing with terrible albums, so it has been a massive relieve to find this album presented to me. Not my favorite Pumpkin album, but who’s counting? Are the vocals annoying, sure. But there are people who can’t stand Kate Bush’s voice either… I’d argue to Corgan's voice is just what is needed for this music. Massive hits, this album was paramount in the ‘90s and definitely one that people need to hear before they die!!! Oh so close to 5* for me…
Really strong throughout, I enjoyed this a bit more than I remember. Critical album for the 90's
Ah, now here's some 90's alternative that I like. (13 known/23 new)
I've never really taken the time to listen to the Smashing Pumpkins, mostly because I don't really care for the song 1979. This album was much better than I was expecting. Solid 90s era grunge.
I enjoyed this album but I have to question whether it is exceptional enough to be on this list. Other bands around the early 90s were doing similar things. 4 stars for being good but not brilliant.
Not as much of a fan as I used to be (they’re a great band when you’re a teenager) but I still enjoyed most of this album. The bonus disc is largely a waste of time, you could lose half the songs because they’re either earlier versions of the album tracks, worse versions of songs that are already on Pisces Iscariot (the main reason the bonus tracks are a bit thin - could have been a really good three disc package), or worth the listen but just buried under everything else. I don’t think this is really an album people “should” listen to, although with the themes of most of the lyrics, it does still fit “before you die”. But if you’re into rock, grunge or shoegaze (I can definitely appreciate the shoegaze influences more now than when I was listening to it 20 years ago), it’s a fun listen. He’s not the best singer, but who is?
Great album, disarm, mayonnaise and today all unbelievably good
A good album, corgans voice though.
I like smashing pumpkins, but the album feels bloated. The singles are iconic, some of the jam tracks, cool as they are, take away from the overall album.
7.5/10 I rather liked this one, much more than other music in a similar place and time - like grunge, which this clearly isn’t. Hard rock and metal with interesting influences of things like shoegaze and post rock Corona has a unique voice Once it got past the harder, angrier stuff at the start it really hit its stride. Middle and back end were strong. Probably needed a couple of songs removed, felt a little long or repetitive towards the end. Best: Today
4 out of 5. Always a band I heard on the radio but never bothered to actually spend time with their albums. This was some good stuff.
I could never warm up to Corgan’s vocals. Nasally screech or whispering whine, it just doesn’t work for me. Otherwise, these tracks are pretty solid musically, and stand the test of time. A fine album.
some classic 90's alt/grunge songs on this record. Some decent deep cuts. Mellon Collie is their masterpiece but this is still a solid record.
4 maybe 5
Yikes so many of these early tech 90s era recordings did not age well. I feel like I'm listening to exported files rather than musicians playing. Or rather musican, singular. Didn't Billy pretty much insist on recording everything himself? Well despite the production and band member drama. I'm happy to separate the art from the artists. I don't love every song on this album but the ones that hit are pretty transcendent for me. Impossible to be objective, the nostalgia is pretty thick. Disarm is an emotional tsunami.
I like early Smashing Pumpkins. This and Gish are solid.
7/10
Wonderful. Fame well deserved. Takes me back to being a teenager. I didn't catch on to Smashing Pumpkins until later in the 90s, but I was right to revere them then, and I revere them now.
You only remember the hits, but the hits are good..
Definitely my favourite Smashing Pumpkins album. Lots of hits, lags a bit at the end but not a ton. Should probably throw this one more.
It feels very 1990s-2000s rock. I can see a 30-40-year-old dad rocking out to this now. I had never listened to them before, but I could totally sit here and listen to this again. I liked how all the songs sounded different. Favorites include Disarm and Silverfuck.
I've always liked this record.
i like this album
Just a great rock record, will be on rotation.
Love this album
I really should've been on this 30 years ago to be honest. I liked Mellon Collie but I never dug into more of the Pumpkins' albums. Admittedly it was harder to do so in the 90s, before streaming was even a twinkle in Napster's eye, but it's my loss - had I bought the CD at the time it would've been worth every penny. Part of me thinks it's better than Mellon Collie; it's tighter (shorter) and a bit more consistent. There are still changes of pace and volume but the overall feel is more raw and immediate. I was on the fence between 4 and 5 with that album and I feel myself in the same place here. Maybe the fact I don't have the nostalgia factor means I'm not quite there but both albums would fall under 'strong 4' rather than 'just about a 5'.
Powerful. Loved it.
There’s parts of the album I really enjoyed parts of it and similarly to Mellon collie and the infinite sadness, Billy corgan made an album that’s simultaneously very good, but also I didn't connect with a lot of it. But sequences like disarm and then soma got me feels. Then spaceboy hit a sweet spot. Maybe I just don’t like the A side? They’re clearly good lyricists, it’s worth listening to
I can see how this album is on the list.
Good intro to heavyish rock, classic album too
This album slapped in middle school, and it still slaps. This is kind of peak Smashing Pumpkins for me, I never really got into any of their stuff that came after this.
I was a little surprised to see this album pop up. I already had Melancholy and I didn't think Smashing Pumpkins would get two albums on this list. I like this record a little better than Melancholy, I feel like it has more substance and a lot less filler. Still, I think Smashing Pumpkins are really more of a 'best of' band - their great songs are absolutely fantastic, the rest can be skipped and you don't miss much. That said, this is a really strong record and I like it a lot. Part of that is probably nostalgia, I was just a kid when this came out but when I got to middle school everyone loved the Pumpkins and we played their records all the time. I'd go with like 3.75/5 on this one and will round up.
There are 90s alternative bands, then there’s The Smashing Pumpkins. This album introduced them with a BANG
This will always stand out as one of The Smashing Pumpkins’ best albums. What really sets it apart is Butch Vig’s production. He masterfully brought out that layered sound, balancing the dense wall of distorted guitars with Billy Corgan’s somewhat lazy, whispering vocal style. It’s that interplay between the dreamlike atmosphere and the heaviness of the guitars that makes this album so special. When it came out, it was a breath of fresh air, offering something unique and refreshing at the time.
Great album!!
Really good album
The 4 goes to the songs that are very guitar heavy, not a fan of the slower, relaxed ones. Good album.
Real 90s sounds. Headlined by Cherub Rock and Today this was a great listen but with a few long tracks that lost my interest.
Love this. It feels cozy in a vaguely sad sort of way.
Great album. Know it well.
wow this hits hard and catches my attention from the start 3.5/5
.........................
This album is undeniably a massive step up from Gish. As great as their debut is, at the time it felt like they were going to be just another grunge band, but this album is so interesting and unique. Some moments almost feel elegant, and explores a more beautiful side of the genre that even Nirvana weren't able to achieve. I feel like maybe there are a handful of tracks in the tracklist that didn't *need* to make the cut, but despite its lesser moments, this is still a brilliant album.
I'm hit or miss on Bill Corgan's voice, it can veer into whiny too easily. But the music on this record is really solid, and "Disarm" and "Cherub Rock" are great tracks, and there are some really phenomenal and surprising musical turns in certain songs such as "Geek U.S.A" and "Silverfuck". Like a lot of 90s albums, it can overstay its welcome clocking in at over an hour, and while the vibe is almost too consistent, you really lock in at a certain point.
This album is undeniably one of the defining albums of the 90's. I don't understand all the hate on Billy Corgan's voice. It's unique and weird and helps brand the band. This was a good listen.
so good bro
I go back and forth on this album (and Smashing Pumpkins in general). Part of me loves them and is so deep, different and I can connect with what he is singing about so much. Then other times (Silverfuck) just seem so pretentious and overdone. Overall I think it is a great album. Love the hits and many of the lesser knowns.
When life was good and we were young, there were groups like this who made albums like this and made us happy to be able to listen to them and share them... Then, I don't know how or why, things changed and the only thing we're left with is nostalgia. And many thanks to this project and its authors for reminding us and allowing us to relive it ;-)
This really hits. Production, writing, instrumentation, vocals all complement each other so well. Everything works just as intended. Not a hair out of place. It’s long, but the length is justified. I’d say the second half is way better than the first. Loved this album, their best??? 4/5
Chill album, great to listen back to this and their other melancholy is fantastic. 3.5.
# Album Name: Siamese Twins # Artist: Smashing pumpkins # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Decent first listen. Although the album has a very weird guitar distortion on it. Literally every track bar a few has this whiney sound. it must have been of the time! Theres a few good tracks on this album. But the album suffers from the same thing a lot do on this list - ITS TOO DAMN LONG. Coming in at over 60+ mins it feels like its over extended for the sake of it. If they trimmed it down then it would be damn good imo. The fillers take away from the quality of the good tracks. Thats subjective i know. Im torn between a 3 and a 4. A three is too low for some of the tunes, a 4 too high for others. A 3.5 would be about right. I cant give that so ill give a low 4. # Top Tunes: Cherub Rock / Today / Disarm / Luna # Would I listen to it again? Probably.
I liked this one, and liked all of the songs with the exception of Silverf*ck. I have a hunch that I would have liked this album more 20 years ago when it came out, but incredibly I had not listened to it before. I think that I must have assumed that it was too “alternative” for my taste and didn’t give it a chance. Anyway, I am giving it four stars, on the lower end.
I liked most of the songs here! Just didn't particularly like Today and really didn't like Disarm. Favorites were Quiet and Hummer.
Let's get loud :-)
So many strong songs throughout. I like it when the guitarist plays gentle then it goes back in all heavy. Bravo
I want to give it 5*, but his voice does not provide the depth on these songs. An amazing album.
I was mildly obsessed with these guys but Mike - he knows and loves them so well! This was fresh and new, they were menacing and cool and mysterious and that's how their guitars sounded too, so kick ass w Corgan growling along. What a pleasure to come back and listen from start to finish, that was great!!!
Lovely stufff
magnificent album by the titans of alternative music. although not their first album, this was many people’s first introduction to the band and their commercial breakthrough. highlights: “cherub rock” “today” “disarm”
A classic, to say the least. I love grunge music, and I do like the Smashing Pumpkins, for the most part. There's something intangible that makes me not LOVE their music, for some reason. It maybe Billy Corgan's voice, I don't know. I can definitely appreciate this album for what it is, but I just can't bring myself to love it, no matter how many times I listen to it. "Today" will forever be a proper tune, though.
7/10. Some great songs throughout, but overall went back-and-forth with it. Really enjoyed parts and other parts were 'fine'.
I’ve always liked this band and Corrigan but listening to this album straight through makes me realize I think I like all the pieces individually more than the sum of the whole. Need a few more listens.
Cherub Rock me recuerda a guitar hero
Holy shit, as of writing this album has over 874.8 million combined streams on Spotify... hopefully it lives up to its supposed preceding reputation. Listening to the 2011 remaster. Opening track, Cherub Rock --> Vibes. Big fan of the distorted guitars riffing. The bass has distortion on it too, very cool. Listened to it while driving around getting stuff done, was excited to finally have an album with a bit of energy again
4 great album
Interesting! I usually skip the smashing pumpkins, but I kinda liked the sometimes psychedelic, grungy, 90s sound!
I liked this!! More than I was expecting, although I don't know why I wasn't expecting to like it. I preferred the slower songs I think Songs added to my playlist: - Rocket - Disarm - Spaceboy - Luna 3.75/5!!
Would've been 5 stars but Billy Corgan's whiny voice gets on my nerves.
No other band sounds like Smashing Pumpkins. Super distorted, very distinctive vocals. I prefer other albums, but this is very, very solid.
I enjoyed this album a lot. It felt exactly like the alternative rock that I had always just missed out on. Classic album for me.
I've been a long-time fan of Smashing Pumpkins and this is a classic. I definitely prefer Mellon Collie though, this was good but not great - a few songs I really like and a bunch I'm not too fussed over. Rating: 4
I loved this a lot. This is what I want!!!
On paper this is right up my street. Never listed but prime alt rock. Some insane guitar work in particular the solo on Soma. Dreamy vibes meets punchy rock. I think I will re listen as in parts found a bit difficult to get into.
Great album.
Very very good album. This was right in the 'trading cassette tapes' era. Fond memories.
I always viewed this lot as a bunch of Johnny come lately's of the grunge scene. This wasn't helped when I received a promotional flexi disc of 'I Am One' through the post its a great song from their debut album. But I did wonder about their stupid name at the time and thought, they wouldn't do very well. I got that wrong. This is their best album by far. Great tunes and the use of loud/quiet Pixies influence. It's not got a bad song on it, however I've never been a fan of Billy Corgan's nasally whine, which got worse with every release and made them virtually unlistenable later on their career.
Great listen Still heavy rock without being too harsh Some brilliant songs
4.5. Their peak.
This album is twice the length of the one I got yesterday and much more compelling. Thank goodness. It's been a rough streak. Highlights: Cherub Rock, Today, Soma, Mayonaise
This album is kinda weird in that its an album by a fairly unapologetic rock band, but their slow ballads are significantly better than their hard/fast songs. Pretty good, enjoyable album.
Peak Pumpkins, this hit all the right spots at exactly the right time when it came out, still a great album thirty years on.
This, I really enjoy from back in my student daze. My flatmate played it and played it played it until I enjoyed it. At first I think I might have found it cheesygoth, but it has grown on me, so I no longer groan so much and just humm along.
I didn't get into this at the time, but have listened to it several times over the years, it's a solid rock album, but for me it never quite lives up to the expectations that my mates put on it. Don't get me wrong, there are many tracks that are great, but overall it doesn't grab me.
Crunching and punchy grunge music from the early 1990s. Eaach track layers upon the previous.
I don't have a particular connection to this album, but it's super nice listening to it again. Mostly. When it all comes together, the shoegaze-y fuzz and the melodies in its great moments, it feels like something I've missed dearly. But often, it just doesn't.
4.25
Classic 4/5
I loved the album! It sounded A little like Nirvana x red hot chillipepers. Best song: Disarm
very enjoyable once you get used to billy corgan's voice, some cool ones
Excellent album. When The Smashing Pumpkins want to rock hard, they can really rock hard. But there's an undercurrent of vulnerability in most of these songs too that gives the music an emotional complexity. The whole band is great. I love the bass playing on this album. This never occurred to me before but Billy Corgan sometimes sounds like Mick Jagger. They have a similar wailing rock style. Corgan feels like a musical descendent of Jagger in a way, even if the rest of the music is pretty different from the Stones.
Angsty, overdriven & fuzzed out grunge rock. Smashing Pumpkins are unique and beautiful and weird and are always ready to throw something at you that will force you to pay closer attention right when you start to wander elsewhere. I like this album, and I generally like their singles/big hits more than their smaller songs, and this one has two excellent ones: "Today", and "Disarm", both of which are complex and interesting listens that at times sound like they came from two different bands. "Today" is the one that plays more with the typical Smashing Pumpkins sound of messing with a dichotomy of distorted and clean; where some riffs and vocal takes are so clean and pretty, and then some are so heavy and scratchy that you almost want to look at your speakers and check for cracks after listening. "Disarm" is an epic rock ballad, with stabbing cello staccato riffs, orchestral chimes, an acoustic guitar that feels isolated and alone, and a vocal part that somehow actually acts as the glue to the rest of the track. It's a crazy mix that works so well because the band are so into it. This back and forth clean/dirty is always what kept me interested in Smashing Pumpkins and is one of the reasons why I've admired them throughout the years. This is a 4/5. Classic album cover.
I think I like it more than the other SP album
Just shove those alt hits down my gullet baby. I can't say I'm the world's biggest SP fan, but for the time, this record had everything a guy like me could've wanted; powerful anthemic rock hits accompanied by crispy unique guitar tones. Chef's kiss. I listened to this album a lot coming up, and it's still great, I just don't get the same feeling listening to it I did back then.
I loved Smashing Pumpkins when I was a teenager, but I've not listened to this album for at least a decade. On putting it on I wondered why, it opens strong and I enjoyed the guitar tone a lot. I don't quite have the same opinion of it as I did 25 years ago, the album gets a bit samey and repetitive and Corgan's lyrics often come across as the words of a teen poet. Corgan also is one of the arseholes of the music world, but I haven't docked the Smiths stars for Morrissey and I won't do that here either. This is a strong 4, it might have got a 5 on a generous day, but the tail end of the album is significantly weaker than the start and prevents it from getting the full 5.
Highlights: Cherub Rock Today Silverfuck Mayonaise This album is is all about the hits; and when The Smashing Pumpkins hit, they hit hard. They rest of Siamese Dream doesn't quit reach the high bar set by the opening track, but it is still worth adding to your library and listening rotation.
the ultimate high school masterpiece: an album meant to be grown out of but still treasured. i never heard the entirety of Siamese Dream as a teenager, but the songs i did hear appealed to me immensely. they were loud, angsty, romantic, and everything you really wanted to hear when you yourself were loud, angsty, and painfully infatuated with everyone who was ever nice to you. Billy Corgan gets you for all five and three-quarter minutes of "Mayonaise" -- and his and James Iha's guitars get you more. i can understand why someone would hate the Smashing Pumpkins, of course. they were hyped up to no end, they were this big Americanized arena rock take on a distinctly indie British scene/fad, and let's face it -- Billy Corgan is a C-tier lyricist at best. you can deny Siamese Dream its "masterpiece" status through these criteria, sure. but try denying the wave of guitars that slams into you on "Today". you can't, cause it killed you. cause it went so hard. silly.
85% Best: Cherub Rock; Quiet; Today; Hummer; Disarm; Silverfuck Must-Hear? Sure
Such a majestic and powerful album. It has some of my all-time favorite Smashing Pumpkins and 90s alternative rock songs. However, some of the lesser known songs can drag the album experience longer than expected. I still recommend it though.
Chad. 4.5
Good album
This one is a close personal favorite of mine, however, Disarm is kinda a stinker (SP aren't as good when you have can't avoid Billy's shitty lyrics) 🤷
Perfect music to listen to right after Halloween
Do you like cool guitar riffs? Siamese dream by The Smashing Pumpkins is the perfect album for you. I liked this album because of the guitar riffs it has, Sometimes its calm but sometimes its loud. It also has good lyrics. I might be biased because I used to love the Smashing Pumpkins but overall this is a good album. I recommend this to anyone who likes some kind of loud music but also sometimes calming music.
have you ever heard a song and thought wow these lyrics and instruments sound good that's how I felt about the album because I have listened to this song many times but I cant remember where I used to hear this song before also I felt the lyrics were good because the singer had a good voice and the instruments made the song add more to it than just the singer and the lyrics I think this song is good and I would recommend listening to this because its got pretty good lyrics and a good singer
1st song-i like it because i don't know I just like it 2nd song- I like it because it sound so good and little bit sad I don't know why for me its a little bit sad 3rd song- its pretty cool to hear this one it's I like it so much
If you want to listen to good beat? Then this album is for you. I like this album because it has a good bass and they can be really be intense and they can be really calm. I really connect to the songs. the lyrics are really powerful. If you want to want listen to very powerful songs. then this album is for you.
really love the pumpkins.
Good
Grunge sounds better live than recorded. It’s the bottom end that matters. It makes the droning less of a background noise. The album? It’s good. Maybe great. Among the greatest of all time? Doubtful.
I hadn’t noticed this being similar to my bloody valentine, but now that you mention it it’s pretty close. But these guys have the jams. This owned the 90s and has a place in my heart Today.
3.5 stars rounded up. “Today” and “Cherub Rock” are such bangers. Amazing singles. And “Mayonnaise” is quintessential dreamy emo rock, which out My Blood Valentines My Bloody Valentine and inspired Starflyer 59. The rest is meh. In re-listening to 90s Smashing Pumpkins albums almost 30 years later, each album seems to be 2-4 beautiful songs surrounded by at least a solid hour of unremarkable dross.
Really like a lot of the songs on here, but it falls off in the second part IMO. The quiet parts on songs like Soma are way too quiet, to the point where you can’t hear anything in the car. I wish it had more hard rocking tracks.
Felt like the shift away from down and dirty grunge into a more nuanced alternative rock world. This raised the bar, the singles like "Disarm" and "Today" just lift everything higher as, simultaneously, Billy Corgan descended into madness... You can just hear the proto-Mellon Collie songs if you listen hard enough.
Smashing Pumpkins is my college days. Back then, this was an automatic 5 stars for me. Then as time went on, the polish wore off and alt-rock became stale. I stayed away from those 90’s albums for many years. I was tired of it and that 5 star rating dropped to a 2 star. But time has a way. This now sounds like the good ole days, familiar and comfortable. The fondness is back and upon re-listening, this album has risen back to its former glory to take its place in the history of 90’s alt rock.
Did the Pumpkins invent nu metal? This is the missing link between Gen X grunge and Millennial alt rock.
This is one of those albums that immediately transports me back to a particular time and place whenever I hear it...one of the defining albums of the 90s.
Probably the 2nd best known Pumpkins album. Whatever their faults, Billy Corgan writes a catchy hook.
Great album, but the Pumpkins have yet to earn a five from me. 4.5
Still Smashing Pumpkins, still good. Mellon Collie is better imo, but there are some great songs here as well.
This album has aged particularly well- as well as any nineties riff-rock has. That's not a backhanded compliment. The quality of the recording and production is excellent on the 2011 remaster. This album has track ordering that serves to make each doing a unique expressive. It highlights the dynamic range of The Smashing Pumpkins. From headbanging breakdowns to Billy Corgan's enchanting and introspective performances on songs like Soma. I feel like this album has the ability to communicate the same experience today as it did in 1992. For me, that's represented by disillusionment with the idea of "purpose." But also dissatisfaction with the relationships answers and experiences life has provided this far. I am unsure why, but that's what I associate this music with.
Great fuzzed out alt-rock with sonic depth and honest lyrics. But Siamese Dream doesn’t light that spark in me to warrant a five.
More accessible than Melancholy, and a bit more consistent. Today is the obvious standout but the whole thing warrants a relisten. Good stuff.
Good hard rock. Some excellent guitar parts. Some of the album does sound a little harsh and muddy but still a good listen.
The beginning half of this album is really strong, but it started to lose me towards the end. Maybe it's just a tad too long. "Today" and "Cherub Rock" are both great examples of 90s rock though and I can see why this band was as big as it was during its prime.
Would rate it 4 1/2 stars if I could. Not quite in rare 5-star level desert island for me. The guitars sound immense and love the drum tone.
Exactly what you expect from a smashing pumpkins album
Great album, start to finish. Great vibes for the fall.
Classic record.
LOVED favs: today, soma, mayonnaise, silverfuck
This album starts off so strong and some of the songs fade off towards the end. Still a fun album
Oh I like this much better than "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness". Maybe it's because it's not a 2 hour long album? I know that was part of my problem with the other album. This felt tighter and more cohesive for sure. But overall I just think I liked the vibe a lot more too. I'll definitely enjoy relistens of this in the future.
7,76
I generally like it, but felt bored near the end. I think it deserves another listen though
Billy Corgan is one of those rock stars that I'm never going to love because he is a stupid dick that goes on InfoWars and seems to have nothing but contempt for the people around him. This album is hard to argue with, though. It takes the sonic intensity of shoegaze and tames it into a more stereotypical rock song structure. It really works. The sound is pretty consistent throughout, but doesn't get boring because the songs are well-crafted. Too bad Billy is such a stupid dick 4/5
Their second best
I've never been much of a Smashing Pumpkins fan and I just let this play in the background while doing stuff until Disarm came on, its just so thematically different than everything else but damn if I didnt love it. This album runs long and even though it didnt hit the sweet spot for me I can appreciate what it is.
So many great songs on here. Love Billy’s nasally baritone. A little long but hearing the blueprint for all alt rock to come was worth it
Dragged on a litttle at the end but overall really liked it
Ever since rock band 3 and hearing cherub rock, I’ve been all in on this album. Warm distorted guitar throughout and always thought the smashing pumpkins had a unique effect on the vocals
Solid rocking album. I know several of these tunes but never heard the whole album. They have a good sound using the string backing (probably synth). I've never been that high on the sound of the vocals though. 3.6
This was a fun throwback. In those early 90's years I was far more into other bands (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains) than into Smashing Pumpkins. Now, years later, I'm getting into it more. I specifically liked two of the popular tracks (Cherub Rock and Rockit), but I enjoyed the entire album.
A few songs feel like filler, but the hits (Cherub Rock, Today) *really* hit. This might be more like a 3.5, but nostalgia might be pushing it up a bit.
Great record. Will listen again
Good
Really strong stand out riffs, could have been better vocal mixing
I was really vibing with this today!
I didn't like it when it was brand new back in the day, and I thought I still didn't. Until I realized that I was singing along with damn near every song on the album. This one's solid.
This is a really good album. It flowed so well from beginning to end (apart from the shitty youtube ads!). It passed my rule - if you get to the end of the album and wonder where the time went then it's a good album. I will definitely listen again.
The first half is pretty great but I lost interest throughout the second half. The songs are very full of themselves. Rating: 4.1
Great album. I always forget they started off as a great rock band before becoming whatever they were on mellon colllie
01) Cherub Rock - 8,5 02) Quiet - 7,5 03) Today - 9,0 04) Hummer - 8,0 05) Rocket - 7,5 06) Disarm - 9,0 07) Soma - 8,5 08) Geek U.S.A. - 7,5 09) Mayonaise - 9,0 10) Spaceboy - 8,0 11) Silverfuck - 7,0 12) Sweet Sweet - 7,5 13) Luna 8,0 TOTAL: 8,08 (81/100) Current ranking: 77/246 Ok, this sounds much better to me (not to mention shorter) than Mellon Collie (Total: 7,27 (73/100), current ranking: 146/246)... Butch Vig is recognizable, at times I hear a bit of Nirvana, and at times a bit of Garbage. The album is much more cohesive than its overlong successor, although there are fewer hits like "Tonight, Tonight" or magnificent "1979". For me, the best on the album are "Disarm", "Today", "Mayonaise" and "Soma".
Again very strong music. Unique sound, technically precise, sometimes heavy but not grating. 4.3
Just a classic.
Stark 4a.
Liked this one more than I thought I would. I know a few of their songs and was expecting whiny angsty singing. And while there was that, the instrumentals were way more lush and interesting than I was expecting. Liked that it was grungy while still being clear and didn’t just make everything noisy and distorted
Enjoyed this quite a lot 8/10
all albums should be 10 minutes long, fuck this garbage
Very interesting mixture, I enjoyed the back-and-forth between harder grungier sounds and softer melodic stuff.
A formative album in my teens, although I realise that I really dislike the guitar sound.
solid garage rock album, ages decently! probably 4.5
Siamese Dream is the Smashing Pumpkins' second album. After the surprising success of their first album, the band had considerable pressure to perform on their follow-up, and they responded well with Siamese Dream. This is a great collection of guitar driven, alt-rock songs. They are far from the grunge-dominated alt-rock of the era - closer to a metal sound. Siamese Dream includes some of the band's early hits, Including "Today" and "Disarm." The success of these singles, and some very successful tours, propelled the band to international stardom. This is a great collection from the time when the band developed their sound.
Great alt rock album, Smashing Pumpkins at their peak.
so good. Im crazy for the drumming and the unique quality of the guitar diversity. The vocals are kind of off but it works in a way that may not mesh with stronger vocals.
90s icon
a bit mixed on this one. there are parts of this album that, for me, verge on unquestionably great. songs like, 'today' and 'geek u.s.a' are fun and definitely the highlights for me. a lot of the album is... fine but not really my thing. especially when the album tends to be quieter. i really like this album more when it's cooking than when it's soft. that being said, there's nothing bad here, just really not totally my thing. ultimately, i liked it, but didn't love it.
some of the songs here are great (especially mayonaise) but a lot of them are kinda boring to me. 7/10
I liked it, solid stuff but not as strong as Mellon Collie. It started well and perhaps tailed off a little. Not much to complain about though, think I'll listen to more smashing pumpkins
A lot of youth souvenirs with that album and my uncle
I liked this much more than Melon Collie. Like twice as much. That being said, I still really don't like Corgan's breathy-ass voice. The music is good though!
Classic. Aged reasonably well.
This is good shit!!! Wasn't IN LOVE with it but a solid album and I enjoyed the listen
Love ‘today’. Similar to a lot of albums— 3 of the songs stuck with me the others I might not listen to again.
This is a great 90s rock album!
Nostalgic Guitar Hero shit. Favorite Song: Cherub Rock, Today Rating: 3.6/5
I never gave this album a fair chance even though it was incredibly popular when I was a teen. Corgan's voice always annoyed me back then. Listening to this front to back, it's amazing. Absolutely love the guitar tone and layering. Still don't love his voice but it does fit the music well.
Good
this album sounds like cheese
Incredible album. Billy Organs guitar work on this record is fantastic. The guitar tone he has is beautiful. Especially on some solos or lead parts. I often find that Lyrics aren't really his strong point...but in this record they are awesome. It's too bad he couldn't capture the magic in this record with other releases. Smashing pumpkins were never really on my radar growing up. Of course the singles on the radio or on much music were often heard... But they never pulled me in at the time. I think I appreciate this record differently than I would have growing up. Even in my angst years. There's a beauty in this record filled with melancholy and hope that is captured perfectly within the lyrics, the music, and within the tone of the record.
Good album, has some bangers 7.5/10
The whiny voice was more bearable here, I actually enjoyed this one decently. I wouldn’t mind if a song came on shuffle, but damn it gets so repetitive. Sad boy summer vibes for sure. I’m just glad pumpkins are over with for now.
Wow, really refreshing, don’t really listen to something like this on a daily basis
I've never listened to this entire album straight through, and while there are no big suprises, there are also no needle-scratching disappointments, either. This is a solid album, even if Billy Corgan insisted on singing on all of them.
Great 90's rock vibes. Would give it 3.5 if I could but I'll round up today. :)
A classic 90s alt rock album. Favorites were Today, Quiet and Disarm.
Not a fan of Billy Corgan's voice, but I dig the album!
Heard of this band but never listened to them, great album and enjoyed the variety of music. Sweet Sweet is great.
This was enjoyable! I don't know if I would listen again, but I did like the sound of the album as a whole. I don't think I'd ever heard a song by The Smashing Pumpkins before somehow, but I'd listen to more from them.
Rated against other grunge in general.
I thought this was good, and if I was born 20 years ago I would’ve LOVED it
boy i sure hope corgan isn't a jag
Part #625 of “I don’t like this as much as I’m supposed to.” But I do like it. And I LOVE “Cherub Rock”. Just not an all-time favorite. 3.5/5
I've already heard melon collie and I've passed through one or two songs here but this project overall is amazing, near perfect, and remarkably produced. How it didn't make it's way into the Apple music top 100 is beyond me.. Every track brings it's own significance that makes each one special to me. I can't think of a bad song on this record realistically! Cherub Rock and Disarm are just two examples of perfect tracks. The electric guitar distortions makes this entire thing feel destructive and powerful. The band even feels a bit ahead of their competitors on this LP for the time it released.
Really cool grunge rock album.
Bands on the cusp of a breakthrough are at their most interesting and their most unpredictable. Before the Pumpkins became the Led Zeppelin of Alternative Rock, before Billy Corgan became the bald, monk of underground rage, before they released their hit-making magnum opus, there was the dense, fuzz guitar anthem “Cherub Rock” and its haunting acoustic cousin “Disarm,” which arguably goes harder than any of the blistering guitar assaults the band ever produced. “Today” is a spiritual companion to “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and it might be the only successful single in Rock history to simultaneously warn against suicide while celebrating a release from this veil of tears. For fans of guitar-based Rock, the Pumpkins offer layer after layer, with Corgan and James Iha making the case for the best, most effective guitar partnership of the last 30 years. Their debut was an exciting promissory note for ‘90s Rock. “Siamese Dream” delivered on that promise, paying that investment back, and then some.
I do like it a lot, but it's one of those albums that I can't seem to fall in love completely with
I didn’t remember the pumpkins rocking this hard
Enjoyed album. Sweet sweet was very good
i like this a lot actually 4/5 tho bc the songs are all long as fuck
why tf is it so long holy shit
Want to hear another example of the power that Butch Vig has in music? Never knew he co-produced this album with Billy until today. But suddenly it all makes sense now. The Smashing Pumpkins are a band that unfortunately feel like they used up every interesting idea they had in the first 8 years of their 30+ year long career. Of course they couldn’t have known how far they would get, but in hindsight it’s clear they haven’t been running on the same fuel they had in the 90s for a long time. And I’ll get the chance to talk about the real cause of that eventually, hopefully sooner than later. Although, I also wasn’t aware of how much of that fuel for this album in particular was not good. It’s unfortunate how riddled this album’s creation was with personal and artistic roadblocks. From a work schedule that pushed Billy, Butch, and the rest of the band to their limits and even caused Billy to have a nervous breakdown, to Billy’s excessive control over every aspect of the recording process. In which he would undo much of the work that his fellow guitarists were creating and just simply do it himself. He forced Chamberlin to play Cherub Rock until his hands bled once. And all of this was so that they could get as perfect and close to the sound they wanted for the record. And what you hear now is that. A labor of intensive work and love that resulted in one of the best produced and written alternative albums of the 90s. Say what you will about Corgan and his voice or personality, but they struck gold with this record. On many songs, such as Today and Mayonaise, there is brief respite before these thundering riffs of shoegaze-esque guitar comes in, completely fuzzed to shit. I don’t know how they managed to find a balance between intensity and warmth so perfectly, but it paid off. Speaking of Mayonaise, I’ve always loved the way pure distortion peaks through the main riff in short bursts on the chorus. What you hear on this is also some of the finest drumming of any 90s band. Jimmy really is underrated as hell, and the way he writes such unique and iconic drum parts is amazing. If you don’t believe this album’s sound was brought about in some way by the rising popularity of shoegaze at the time, especially with the release of Loveless not even two years prior, this was mixed by Alan Moulder, the same man who mixed that previously mentioned album. I’m still not sure whether I like this, or their following record more, but I do know that this one is an incredibly solid piece of work. Rating: 8/10
A brilliant grunge album, well produced and delivered.
Pretty good album, perhaps their better, the music is strong, but I still don't know if I like or despite Corgan's voice.
Parempi kun muistin! Hyvää ysärii! 4/5
Smiling politely, enjoying this album
good
Just a great album and one that holds up really well 30 years later.
I never listened to much Smashing Pumpkins, other than what was on the radio. That said, most of these songs are recognizable. Enjoyable sound. Heavy guitars, but not pounding in your ears. Definitely a niche band though. Low 4
An old favourite - absolutely loved this as a younger man. Still holds up, but I can see how it might be a bit repetitive
Like this!
Fave: disarm
Like it. Brings back memories of junior high.
Great album!
Today is the greatest day I’ve ever known. I loved this album actually. Great moody vibes. While Cortana vocals seem to be a point of contention between reviewers, I find them to add to the overall vibe and draw you into each song. So I like this album. Today is my standout.
Cleanly produced, lots of highlights with a couple songs that feel a bit like filler. Solid album
The Smashing Pumpkins reminded me this week that no matter how old I am, 90s alternative will always be my favourite. I didn’t give this band the attention they deserved in the moment. For the me guitar stands out. At times very shoegazy which is want held me back for years, but when Billy cracks up the tone, I love it. Cherub Rock needs more of that. Also sneaky good at the softer songs, Disarm has always and will always be one of my favourites of all time. 8.5/10
A couple of all time classics on this one. A great album that I haven't had the chance to listen to in full.
Wasn’t into it when it dropped, but now I see the appeal
Sonido y voz vibrantes y hermosos
Amazing album! Listen to it twice in a row. So many great songs and powerful yet tender melodies, with an melancholic sound and thoughtful lyrics.
Really good album, with a couple heavy hitters
A distant cousin to Nirvana with plenty of grunge, angst, and sound. Never quite soaring into melodies or singable lyrics/hooks, Corgan does have musical moments. The bells on “Disarm”,
Disarm net 4 sterren.
I like it but without à big enthusiam
4/5. A very expressive and loud album. Simple instrumentation and mostly simple lyrics as well, it's somehow easy listening despite the wall of sound of every song. It has a buzzing and shoegaze feel yet the production is really good that it takes away the annoyingness of what shoegaze usually feels like. It's not a perfect album but I did not enjoy more songs than I was expecting and appreciate the unique sound. Best songs: Disarm, Mayonnaise, and Silverf***.
I'm not really a smashing pumpkins fan but this is probably my favourite album of theirs, for what it's worth.
Great alt rock / grunge album. It's a lot more polished than the other albums of the time. Had a great balance of sounds and styles. Good listen that didn't get boring
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. In general, "grunge" isn't a genre I gravitate towards, but this album was cohesive, moving, and fun. I also enjoyed the lead singer's vocals a lot in the context of the songs and the album.
A reminder of my teenage years, great album. 7/10
if only the Pumpkins just kept doing this, instead of seeing the success of "Disarm" and deciding to make a bloated double album.
Pretty good grungy stuff ye
Better than I expected it to be. Some great guitar tones. But the whole thing is just too long and too dense for what it offers.
Smashing.
very solid record
This album is peak 90s alternative, it really exemplifies the Era. Songs like Today, Disarm, and Mayonnaise off this album are basically a prototype for other bands of the time. Heavy distortion, quiet lyrics that suddenly get loud to punctuate. Great album
Sonido rocanrolero indi. Canciones cañeras y otras más suaves. Me gusta.
👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
In truth I was never a fan of Smashing Lumpkins, however, this album has all the ‘90s rock edge and not the alt-emo-nasal-whine of their later work. Key tracks for me are Hummer (which my copy has a skip in due to a scratch on the CD and it sounds weird not hearing it on Spotify), and a Cherub Rock, a song that was inescapable in the ‘90s. This is overall a great flashback album even for the non-radio hits you may not have heard.
I like this album even better than I did in the 90s. I wasn't much of a Smashing Pumkins guy tbh. I was ride or die for Stone Temple Pilots. (I guess I needed a little more hair metal and glam in my grunge.). Anyway, this is an awesome grunge record. Disarm is so good. Also, I heard on a podcast recently that Courtney Love wrote in a letter to Billy Corgan the words: "the killer in me is the killer in you." Mind blown. Cherub Rock is also one of the better rockers from the 90s.
Surprised by how much I liked it.
Good variety of styles. Some cool riffs. I always found Billy Corgan's vocal style kind of interesting especially when he goes from strained (if that's the right word) to a soft voice. It kinda tugs at the heartstrings
liked
I like it Will I listen to again: 80%
it was fine
Great!
Pure nostalgia
3.7
Perfect example of 90’s alternative rock
Another great one. Never gets old.
Disarm alone is a 5.
i never gaved to much of a chance for Smashing Pumpkins when i heard the first album but they showed to had their unical sound, One of the most influentials introducers of Shoegaze-ish, and also one of the most memorable Grunge bands, this album is so noisy, ethereal, so sweet, 1990's music as it core and unical. 8.5/10
