Reviews (page 13 of 14)
Boring. Overrated. Could tolerate a few tracks in the background if I’m in the sun or bar abroad but would get on my tits soon after. 2. My fat fingers meant my Velvet Underground review was never posted (4)
Although i found it enjoyable, I think that had more to do with the genre itself rather than anything this album did. Best served upside down in a car, in the water, on GTA San Andreas. Or at Revolution De Cuba in Sheff.
Reminded me of gta radio stations. Nice background music
Now it let’s me add notes… I think the music sounded good, and I think there’s a time and a place for this music, BUT I gotta lay the hammer down. This is a 2. It’s just not my style, and I don’t ever see myself going… “Oh, I gotta throw on some BVSC” (unless I’m doing some sort of Spanish thing).
Not quite my tempo.
Niet iets dat me aanstaat
couldnt finish it. not my thing ig
Забавно, но вообще не моё
Unexpectedly boring. A lot of these songs feel like they loop ad nauseum without enough dynamics or switch-ups to sustain themselves.
Lift
Its fine. I understand the appreciation. Not my cup of tea but enjoyable.
the clave is alive and well on this album. easy listening. 3
Thought it was nice, but it isn't something I would choose
Not my style at all :(
Just not big on Latin music
I didn't like it that much
not my thing at all. not an altogether unpleasant background noise. Wouldnt listen again
Not my cuppa. Top track: “De Camino a la Vereda”
Great musicianship but not a style of music that does it for me
Was ok, just not my preferred genre of music.
Surprisingly good to work to
Not my style of music, but I could get into the rhythm of it and found myself bobbing along to a bit of it.
This might be the best of this genre, I just couldn't connect with it.
Two reviews in a row where I think Meh is the right term. This might be culturally significant (and probably should be on the list) but I just didn't care listening to it. I didn't care the first time I did when I received it in a VMP subscription, and I don't care this time. It's perfectly pleasant, but not something I like.
Giving cuba in the summer Définitely will listen if I go to latam Not my style though
It's good, but not really my vibe. Something id jam to with Bruno and Andy in a road trip though
I remember when it seemed like the whole world was crazy for BVSC. Tours etc. I bet they were phenomenal live. Not really my thing. Especially at album length.
Cracking opening track, talented musicians. Bored the pants off me
One good song and they blew it in the trailer for the movie
Remember when this came out and topped the album charts. Also recognize some songs and the vibes are generally really positive and fun. Would not listen to voluntarily though.
Not a club I'm a member of
Not for me I'm afraid
The music wasn't so bad, I was mostly just really bored and had to convince myself to not switch to something else. Standouts - 2/5
- I sort of like a handful of the songs on here, but I don’t really get the hype. It feels busy and repetitive and the vocals often too thin with no texture and variation, and I don’t love hearing a group of people singing the same thing with no harmony. - I’m not into the timbre of the main singer’s voice in most of the songs at the beginning of the album. It’s just kind of thin, not super warm, especially in the higher registers, and doesn’t vary much at all. It feels more like speaking than singing, but without an interesting speaking voice to carry it. - My highlights are Chan Chan, Murmulla, the title track (but wish it was half as long), Dos Gardenios, and Y Tu Que Has Hecho and Amor de Loca Juventud, which were more chill and smooth, and this guy’s voice is sooo much more enjoyable to me - a deeper, warmer, smoother sound. - The musicians are good instrumentalists. - I read that this was done in a few days, and it feels like it to me - ideas that are formulaic and not fully explored or particularly memorable. So, it’s like an improv album… which I guess is quintessential live jazz. But, jazz just doesn’t do it for me - it just feels like an intellectual exercise that doesn’t take me anywhere emotionally, and I don’t want that from music I’m listening to.
Fun Spanish vibes but not doing much otherwise
вайбово прикольно весело бар стакан рома жара денс йоу
Not into Latin
Pretty decent, but nothing too special honestly
Another relaxing album
it's all perfectly charming, but it just feels weirdly cliched these days. There’s something ’middle-class-coffee-table-book’ about the whole thing - for a while in the late 90s this stuff was everywhere which, although initially interesting, ended up rendering it all a bit boring. Harmless background music, at best.
It's fine. I don't speak Spanish and don't particularly care for cubano music, so it's just ok. Probably won't return to it. They do appear to be talented musicians, and I'm sure one who is more into this style will appreciate it, but it's not for me.
Brroke my front tooth today and the nerve is exposed. It's so painful and may well get infected. I have a five day wait for the dentist. Some music, blah blah. Cuba, arrrghh my tooth ! Pain.. fuck off..militant Taylor Swift fans scare me more than a nuclear Iran..I am incoherent..my tooth..fuck off Prog Rock...whatever.. bollocks...I'll have to soak myself in gin until Thursday (Its Saturday)... where did all these bats come from !
Close your eyes. You’re at a Mexican restaurant. Imagine the ambiance, the smells, the sounds, the condensation beading off of your margarita or Dos Equis, with chips and salsa in front of you. Now open your eyes. All that’s left is the music. That’s what listening to this album is like. Honestly it was fine. Probably meaningful to someone out there.
Very good but more background music.
Undisputedly skilled but not my favourite genre.
..
Inte min grej och inte på humör.
I remember this album coming out while I was working at Indigo in Scarborough Town Centre, and it was often played in the background during shifts. I think that's why I never took it seriously. It was introduced to me as retail background ambience.
eh
Afro-Cuban Jazz, Trova, Son, Danzon, Bolero, Guajira, Ballad. which came first, them or Calexico?
It was okay for a while. But after a while, it just drags on and on. A little too much for me. But I will still probably come back to this one, or one of their other albums, later.
musique cubaine
Good listening instrumentals. Never heard of this group but music is decent and somewhat unique
Nice background music
I didn’t really listen to it all that much… I mean I did but it was alright, it was good, not bad—it just wasn’t for me
Buncha squares lol
2 out of 5 I was transported to Miami. My wife came down the stairs dancing. That was well worth it! Great Cuban music to set the tone.
Pueblo Nuevo // Amor De Loca Juventud // 2.5/5
Pros: the instrumental music is really great. Cons: I wish I could understand the lyrics
All of a sudden I'm in the mood for Mexican food! And a Mexican restaurant about the only place I really care to listen to this kind of music.
Nothing wrong with it. Just not my thing
Soothing cuban jazz. Top track: Chan Chan
Decent. Not my thing, but not bad
I’ll give it another chance in the future.
words ending with "o" simulator
This is #day365 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… o wow, today marks precisely a year since I started this project. Now, World is currently among my least favorite genres, and I'm not sure if seeing the artwork of this record pop up on the lists of those you kind of must hear before you die can change my perception of it. Some fun moments in here, like the piano on "Pueblo Nuevo," "Murmullo," or the title track, and the sax play in general. Otherwise, there's little chance I'm coming back to this record soon, if ever. Let it be a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day366.
I mean, it's fun, but not really my cup of tequila. The pianist is quite good
I understand the significance, however the constant horns sounded like a panic attack. Not for me
Didn't jump out at me as much as similar pieces of work have done.
Good music but not for me
Not for me.
It's nice but kinda boring and quite repetitive
The first song was really good but I didn't enjoy the rest quite as much. I wanted to, but didn"t feel it unfirtunately..
Oh man I don’t like this at all. It’s too traditional, I just can’t connect. I listened to Manu Chao yesterday who plays alternative Latin music and it was great. It had new wave, punk, rap influences which made that form of music more accessible.
I dont care much for Spanish music. Is fun though, I can imagine this playing on the beach. 2/5
definitely not my style of music
doesnt feel memorable, like it never gets out of its groove. once you listened to the first song you got the vibe of the whole album.
I liked it more than I thought I would. I saw the movie back when it came out and did not enjoy any part of it. So I was surprised when I found I didn’t hate this album. Not great but better than expected.
Not my yum, but not gonna knock anyone else’s. It’s good music, just not my jam.
Vibes go hard though not personally my thing.
Not for me
First song is fire, sadly the album peaks there.
Didn’t stick with me. Needs some more listens
Yeah its pretty nice, would feel right at home backing a room full of cured meat, rum and cigars. Didn't grab my interest much but probably due to personal taste. Where all the distortion at?? Favourites - Pueblo Nuevo, Veinte años
Chan Chan (7/10) Da Camino de la Verada (6/10) El Cuarto de Tula (5/10) Pueblo Nuevo (3/10) Dos Gardenias (7/10) ¿Tú Qué Has Hecho? (6/10) Veinte Años (6/10) El Carretero (6/10) Candela (8/10) Amor der Loco Juventud (6/10) Orgullecida (6/10) Murmullo (5/10) Buena Vista Social Club (5/10) La Bayamesa (4/10) 5.7/10
Sounds like instrumental you'd hear in movies or shows.
Stark början, men blev lite seg
Didn't quite hit for me, although the Cinco de Mayo timing was a fun nod to this album.
I mean, it's alright....not really my jam and I have no clue what they're singing about. Instrumentation DOES seem on point though. But I would rather listen to this than Roni Size, The Slits, or Scritti Politti. And for those reasons, I give this a 2.
Enjoyable lively music but not something I would have in regular rotation.
Good for what it is, and another of those albums where my assessment is "I can respect it, but it's not my thing."
This was okaaaay. I quite liked it at first cause I'd had a few Latin vibe albums recently and quite enjoy them but then it went a bit lounge music with all the piano (which I have no issue with) but it just dragged on a bit and I kinda just wanted the Latin vibes back.
Spanish piano salsa
I saw a band claiming to be these guys in Havana. One of the worst shows I've ever been to. Pretty sure it was a big ol fake but that experience has still tarnished this album for me. Jajajaja. The doco is decent and I'm sure this was cool as heck in '97.
It’s slow and quite boring. Nothing on here interested me.
No me gusta
Not my kind of music. Maybe would be enjoyable live, but this album sounds like muzak and is way too long.
Now if I had chips and salsa it may have been better
5/10 General: Not my vibe, but very fun; WHY ARE ALL OLD SONGS 83405274062650547074589 MINUTES LONG Favorite Song: Dos Gardenias
not for me
Cool
Wish I could vibe with this album more, something about it falls apart
Again, I think a cultural thing.
This went on for too long. Because it’s different from what I’m used to I was interested in what could be found appealing, and it didn’t start off bad but continued for much too long. I have neither compliment nor complaint.
I've found that I like non-English vocals either a lot more than I'd thought or simply a lot more than I used to. It's far less-distracting and lets me as a listener have the vocals settle in as more of an instrument which I prefer. Get that shit out of the way dammit and let's hear the music which I was excited to... Yet after all that, this doesn't grab my interest. Zzzz. This album is unchallenging - it's fine, but feels like the kind of music I (yeah stereotyping) might hear street musicians playing which sets a nice evening mood as I'm strolling by but I'm not really compelled to stop and listen, nor would I remember much about it. Nor do I remember any of the melodies here as they pass me by. 4 chord traditional structures, eh ok. It bores me. By way of contrast, one of our first Spanish-vocal albums was Milton Nascimento's "Clube da Esquina" which has become a favourite - not for anything vocal-wise, but the music is mysterious and challenging which is my jam - that's a compelling album that I can play anytime. Not much of a review, but I'm not feeling much of anything either. 5/10 2 stars.
Not for me
I wish I understood, I'm rating purely on vibes and idk
I don't really love the genre, but the songs sounded not bad for the genre. A lot of the songs in the album (esp towards the beginning) sounded similar to me, but I don't understand Spanish (which definitely impacted my enjoyment).
09/01/25
Not my stuff.
2 Stars (5/15)
Fun vibes and a good listen nothing I’ll play back too often but something to throw on a late evening
Not for me - I get why it’s popular just felt flat
Appreciate the opportunity to listen to something which is far outside my comfort zone and comes from a country that I have no interest in exploring the musical history of. Aside from that, this music is pretty tepid, uninspired and drawn out
Can see why people would love this, but wasn't for me. Grooves were cool but not much else to draw me in
Not really my style. Nice enough in the background.
It was nice
The only reason this got any play Stateside is because of Ry Cooder. It's great that this introduced people to a type of music that they might not have otherwise heard, but I don't think Cooder needed to insert his boring white boomer self. I used to own this on CD and would listen to it occasionally because I thought it was important to hear stuff like this, but I always lost interest after track two. Still true today. I'm sure there's plenty of great Cuban music, but more often than not, this just ain't my thing.
Just not really my thing.
God, this was unescapable in the late nineties. I can see the appeal. It's got a good story with layers and layers of authenticity and it sounds very warm and just familiar and at the same time different enough and the songs are quite pleasant (if rather repititive). But it's also very safe and even then it was very much background-music-in-a-coffeeshop kind of stuff. I like to think that the success of this project was part of the inspiration behind the subsequent and still ongoing wave of rediscoveries and reissues of, ugh, 'world music' from the sixties and seventies. I have no wish to put on this album ever again.
Not something I’d listen to on a regular basis, but if I were at a restaurant or on vacation listening to it, I’d be pleased. Nice melodies, but nothing stood out to me as being particularly memorable once the album was over.
At the time, this album could be heard in the background everywhere. It is well made, but nowadays I hardly listen to it. my vote in 1997: 3/5 my vote in 2024: 2/5
It's competent, but doesn't do much for me. Highlights: "De Camino a la Vereda" (upbeat, I like the horn lines), "Candela" (nice burbling percussion and fingerpicked guitar, though the repetitive vocals on the last half become mind-numbing)
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Fine for what it is, just not something I'm interested in
I appreciate it but not my go to. This is something I think I need to be in the right physical space too enjoy more. Some bar in Miami probably.
It was not my type of thing , gave me jungle book vibes and no words, if you were mehinto that sort of thing I’d imagine it would be good.
either grunge or that music oasis made
Stark 2
Not really for me. There’s one idea per song, repeated for a few minutes til it’s over. I’m sure some people love this.
Latin folk music. It was okay, nothing mind blowing.
Me gustaed it for a while. Liked that it was in Spanish, if it was in English I probably would've decided it was old man music and not even tried to get into it. I still didn't get into it, but I don't regret listening to this album
Nah
2+ Letkeetä kesäistä
Not for me. Just background music for my ears. I think the fact that I don't speak Jazz had more of a negative influence on my experience than the fact that I don't speak Spanish. Shame on me, I say! Also the vibes got kinda ruined, because I listened to this while it was raining outside. This is very much a sunny day album.
I’m glad I finally got a non-English album because I think it’s ridiculous that seemingly over 90% of the albums on this list are in English BUT I unfortunately found this a bit boring. The Cuban vibes were definitely strong!
I don’t speak Spanish only did like half
Background sort of music. If not for the backstory on this band, it wouldn't be on here.
Pretty pants
Would I listen to it again: no Is it a no-skip album: - Do I like it: no* * I was so bored. It's a me problem.
Chill but same
sounds like its pretty significant for latin american music, but i didnt vibe too much with it YNN
Very easy listening...even though I am not fluent in spanish!
I really struggled to get into this, it probably didn't help that I couldn't understand any of the lyrics.
Underwhelming. The songs are pretty one note. Limited hints of Latin beats. Would be fine background music - but I wouldn’t search it out.
Traditional Cuban music. OK for what it is but it's not my thing. 2.5 stars
Not really bad, just wasn't personally feeling it. If you're a fan of Latin music, I'm sure it's great.
Sadly Cuban jazz is not my jam. Listens: 1 Rating: 2
Limited feedback available for a foreign album, but would be something I'd be fine with having on in the background of a restaurant. Favorite track "Pueblo Nuevo 2/5
hot summer nights; a small tavern with acrid smoke coming from inside; the sweaty bodies of two lovers merge in a passionate dance to live music; the musicians are elderly people who seem to have seen all the torments of life for a long time, but still find sincere feelings in music. fav track: Pueblo Nuevo
thi is so far away from being my kind of music. That said whilst listening I noticed I had heard many of these songs before. With a holiday coming up this album took me to a beach in the sun. Lovely harmonies, great spanish guitar and brilliant percussion. The only issue is the repitition over the duration of the album. Easy album to listen to and just switch off, which I am not sure is a good or bad thing. Favourite song: D camino a la vereda Least favourite song: quite a lot of them Album artwork: love it
This would be good relaxing beach music.
Not bad but nothing I would write home about. The kind of music I might hear in a Spanish film and think "this is pretty funky". High 2.
It's fine. Like some solid stuff but not something I care to listen to for a full hour
It's okay. Nice but unexciting. It's classy. The sort of classy thing you'd put on over dinner. When you've had Sabu and stuff why would you go to the diet version?
Fine as background music, but didn't do anything for me.
The nandos background music soundtrack
An ok album
not my jam but still okay
I can appreciate it but it’s not my thing. Far far worse albums on this list, so a low 2.
It's a Cuban albums of nice-sounding Spanish songs. It's pleasant enough, but not my style of music.
I could picture myself listening to this while sipping rum in Havana, but I’ll probably never do that so I’ll probably never listen to this again.
It was fine, but I don't want to listen to an hour of it.
i know i usually like this stuff but this seemed a bit boring to me and really dragged on
One day when I grow up, I’d like this to be the kind of music I put on to get work done
Great background music
An sich nicht schlecht, wird nur irgendwann eintönig. Ich fand den afro cuban jazz von Machito um Längen besser (damals leider nur mit drei bewertet), deswegen kriegt das hier ne zwei.
Slightly overrated I think. Very popular when it released, perhaps because of the novelty of hearing Cuban musicians. I wouldn’t naturally pull it off the shelf.
I can appreciate this album for its vibe and the musicianship. It’s kind of a good album, I just don’t like it. I will never listen to a single one of these songs ever again if given a choice, so it’s unfortunately a two from me. Can see why others may like it, though.
Appreciating the warmth and charm. Not my style.
I remember this being a massive cross-over hit. You wanted to be a cool hipster before cool hipsters were a thing, then you definitely told people ALL about this album. Listening to it now, kinda hard to see why *this* one in particular was popular. Sure, it's cool and funky, but one of "the greatest" - I don't quite see it.
Not too bad. If I understood Spanish it would get at least one more star.
Very chill album, first song was one of my favorites, later songs were more jazzy which I liked
Not my kind of music, enjoyed the Latin vibes, though
Not my style
Another fine album ruined for me by the restaurant industry. I had to hear music from this album every day for many years, even though we didn't serve any Cuban food. On the upside, it always makes me think of the Cuban scenes in "The Godfather Part 2", which is a favorite of mine.
When I was a kid, the family who lived in the house behind me would often have late night parties and I wouldn't be able to sleep because this type of music would be playing loudly.
Enjoyable, great for testing out speakers / sound stage / equipment but not sure it’s an album I’d recommend having to listen to before you die.
Buen ritmo
A lot of world music recently. Not a terrible thing. Nothing too crazy sticks out to me on this except I immediately recognized Candela. Definitely sampled in a Lazarus song Enemy and I in the movie Alpha Dog. Love when that happens. I appreciate this for what it is, but a whole hour is daunting for most albums and especially this for me. Not an absolutely terrible album at all, just not for me and would never really find myself coming back to it. 2.5 but rounding down cuz I'm feeling saucy.
Was into it to start but lost me by midway. One of the singers I did not vibe with at all...showed up on a couple songs. Sounded like he was gonna die any second. Certainly prefer this Spanish style over the polka but not a replay for me.
I kept tuning out of this one rather than finding myself drawn in. On paper a mix of jazz instrumentals with samba stylings should at least be enjoyable to me, but there's not enough editorial or musical guts here to get down to killer tracks rather than filler background noise.
Das ist nicht meine Art von Musik. Qualitativ bestimmt sehr hochwertig gemacht jedoch nicht das ich gerne höre.
Apenas achei paia demais
Honestamente achei bem divertido e dançante. Não sei se seria algo que procuraria sozinha para ouvir um dia mas eu gostei da experiência. Só não foram todas as músicas que me divertiram, algumas achei meio chatinhas. Fave: el cuarto de tula
Generally ok but a bit predictable.
I thought I might dig this but I didnt. I expect setting counts for a lot with this album.
Reminds me of that time I was sitting in a social club in Buena Vista.
Not my Genre unfortunately. But great Kuban Music Sound.
de camino a la vereda was a very enjoyable song to listen to although it's easy listening in the background I wouldn't relisten to this album otherwise
It was a fun album, the music is good but not my vibe
nice to have in the background but I would not actively listen to this
Not really a type of music I would set out to listen to
Next 5 Songs played by my Spotify Algorithm: Cody Castro - He Hopes She Loves Me Nos Naranjos - No Tradition no Se Olvida Maria Agusto - Eres Un Punto Ray Perez - Muchacho Loco Ray Baretto - Acid
Not bad but a bit on the slower side
Did not expect a spanish album to be integrated in the 1001 album mix. Maybe id understand its influence better if I spoke the language. I gave 2 stars because some of them I could bop my head to.
It was catchy for a while. Got old kind of fast.
A nice break from my usual but not a must-have for me. Actually, the piano player Ruben Gonzalez put out a solo album I enjoy more than the Buena Vista release.
Musique cubaine, à écouter en sirotant un margarita sous un chaud soleil. Je me sens comme dans un début/fin d'épisode de Dexter. Me gusta correct
I mean it sounds great but would never listen to it
Fun and energetic introduction to Cuban music. Not an album I'd ever listen to again though.
Not really my cup of tea but some interesting ideas
Boring, not for me
Repetitive nonsense
Meget chill, men forstår virkelig ikke hvad albummet laver her. Meget basic spansk chill
Raggae, gute Vibes, nicht mein Ding
Not really my thing, but it’s not offensive
I’m not great at focusing on songs in languages besides the two I know so this album loses points for that although obviously it doesn’t weigh on the objective quality. Favourite song was Orgullecida.
Sorry wansnt for me
Not my thing
never been a huge fan of most Hispanic music, this is alr
Elevator music
Just not my thing
I always assumed (having never listened) this was a white indie rock band. I was pleasantly surprised. Needs to be 20 minutes shorter or my Spanish needs to be significantly better for a 3.
Spanish music, was weird listening to it. I don't think I'll listen again.
Listened Before? N Meh. Not an album I needed to hear before I die. Much respect but not my style. Added to Library? N Song added to playlist: Chan Chan
Eg e for trøtt til å tenka på nåke kult å si om da
A pretty chill listen. Got a few tracks that I'd listen to again
I’m sure the musicianship is great but Christ this sounds like background music
Not riveting.
Makes me hungry for Mexican food but that's about as far as it goes, also this one song with the piano just sounds terrible
Not my scene
This one made me hungry for some tacos. It sounds like the soundtrack in every Mexican restaurant I’ve been to, it probably is come to think of it.
im trying to review this album i dont like and some cunt called sm-a205f keeps hijacking my spotify. so you have a samsung galaxy a20 eh? bastard. this has happened before - why do they always listen to the most ai manufactured sub-10,000 views garbage on the database? who with actual human sentience is listening to 'hype' by hermes demon? how can this scam possibly make money? "Hey @drakelito, Thanks for coming to the Community." why the totalitarian capital c? only God gets the big g fuck sake "It's possible that you've joined a Group Session" have i FUCK accidentally joined a group session. and again the corporate onanism with the capitals. cheer up maxim it says you're not even a fucking spotify employee. see if im listening the climax of the heiliger dankgesang, (when the heavens align, the lotus flowers bloom, the bough breaks, when jesus wept and the great void sighs in peace), and asian fucking boo by baby tenchi comes, on theres no fucking telling what ill do. ive put on 'go away' by strawberry switchblade to see if they have a sense of humour. oh my days. 'ain't staying' comes on. my god. am i having a spotify war? i retort with 'fuck you' by lilly allen. is this actually real? okay this isnt funny now and changing my device password didnt help. laura probably did this with three lines of code for a laugh just to annoy me. it is now 12 o'clock and im fed up and tired. oh thats how you fix it. ah okay. and peace p e a c e peace! and thousand sighs and sweet soothing sounds, and birdsong (it was veljo tormis - la kanteletar: I. herkä neito) --- anyway blah blah buena vista social club it was fine
Huh... album that i listened to a few times hoping i just didnt get it yet but it has just started grating. i like that its in Spanish and some of the bass is nice. some nice jazz elements as well. maybe if i was dancing i would enjoy it more.
i mean it was fine as kind of background music while doing my homework but a lot of it sounded very similar. probably due to my not knowing the language though
2.5
nah
This was just OK. Nothing jumped out as spectacular.
Didn't enjoy this
Background music of backpacker Hostel
These are clearly talented musicians, but this was just not my taste. Very chill, relaxing background Spanish music that kind of all just blend together to me and nothing really stands out. I bet if you're really into this sound though, this is a top tier album for you. It made me want to visit a Cuban restaurant and drink and eat. 2.5/5
I get why this made such a splash and they’re undoubtedly very accomplished but it’s just not for me and if I here Chan Chan again in my life it’ll be too soon.
The problem with most world music is that it that it does not generate an emotional response. This is no exception. One or two tracks are catchy and highly danceable, but the rest are just of purely intellectual interest, and that is not what music is about for me (which is probably why I am not a fan of jazz). If I want intellectual stimulation I will read a book, or discuss topics of interest with friends and family, I will not listen to music. So, despite being well performed and produced, this left me cold. If I am to take an intellectual aproach, then I have to criticise it as being an artificial collective created by Ry Cooder and Nick Gold. There is little that is authenticaly Cuban in its genesis. The result may be true to Cuban music, I can't tell as I am not particularly familiar with their music, but it is their equivalent of a 'boy band' or perhaps a supergroup. All very produced and artificial.
Blir ju lite glad av musiken men särskilt bra är det ju inte.
Like others noted here, I kept tuning out of this one rather than finding myself drawn in. On paper a mix of jazz instrumentals with samba stylings should at least be enjoyable to me, but there's not enough editorial or musical guts here to get down to killer tracks rather than filler background noise.
It was okay
An album that begins entertainingly enough, but there is a LOT of filler. I'm struggling to see how this has been raised above anything else of the same genre.
Great music and rhythms. Again, I wish I could enjoy the lyrics and the meaning of the songs.
Failed to trouble any part of my brain
no
Give me Tito Puente over BVSC any day. This is alright but nothing to write home about, 2/5.
Nothing special. Have enjoyed some of the latin flavored music quite a bit so far, but this one seemed very monotonous...2/5
overrated
It's clearly good music but just not what I'm into
Ei mun genre, mut ihan kivalta kuulostavat.
Not really my style, it was nice listening, but as a background music for me
I don’t know. I don’t speak Spanish.
boring
Wasn't really my thing
Good musicianship. Not my thing.
Music was fine but a little repetitive at a certain point. Kind of made me think of elevator music or what plays in the background at Mexican restaurants.
Heard it before?: only one song Enjoy it?: yeah, background filler for me but was very melancholic Favourite song: Track 1 - Chan Chan
This was fine. Very specifically Cuban, and mostly interesting for background music.
Lyrics in Spanish so I couldn't understand what they were singing. But music wasn't too bad. Probably wouldn't listen again.
If I hadn’t had this nearly back to back with more world music I would have enjoyed it more.
2.5, It's nice.
I get the appeal just not my thing
pretty fun actually.
Not my jam
Too gentle to stir the soul.
Jazzy, went on a bit.
not for me
Not what I’d choose to listen to. It didn’t hurt my ears, on the contrary, but I’m not scoring it highly. 2*
This was overall one of the most boring foreign language albums I’ve gotten. Surprised this came out in the late 90s since it sounds like something from the 60s
Background music
It's fine, I guess
For mariachi music, its ok.
I'm not into Spanish music, besides Salsa. So this was a no for me unfortunately. I can see that the album is well produced tho.
Although I found this quite boring it just made me want to go on holiday!
Pitäis lukea mikä tässä oli taustalla, kun aika perussetiltä genressään tuntu olevan. Pidemmän päälle alkaa tökkimään ja vaatii ympäristöltäkin jotain, että tulee kunnolla fiilisteltyä
Nandos music? Completed it m8
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Candela Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: A good soundtrack to a lazy day somewhere south of the border. Unfortunately I am listening to it in a state of mental anguish in my solo apartment and I wasn't transported to a beach so much as wishing I was there. Maybe it caught me on a wrong day. Gonna go listen to Morrissey or some shit that meets me where I'm at right now.
Whilst I find the music perfectly enjoyable, it’s not the type of music I can see myself gravitating towards (likely because I like singing along to songs so I like music with English lyrics, which is obviously no fault of the album). But I just didn’t find it very interesting in general. So I probably won’t listen to it again. I also think it’s too long and becomes a sort of drag as some of the music is very similar. Favourite song is probable Candela.
It sounds like Spanish music. I really don't know how else to describe it. It's just an incredibly generic album, a solid hour straight of just thinking "Yep. This is what Spanish music sounds like." It's not bad, exactly. I enjoyed listening to some of it. But it’s just about the most bland thing since unbuttered white bread. I kept wondering if there'd ever be a single interesting thing, some song I could point back to and say "yeah, this was the highlight" or "I really liked what they did here". Nope. I forgot every single song within a minute of listening. If the scoring system here allowed it, I would give it a 50/100, because I think that's the only fitting rating for it, but I can’t, so just pretend that my 2 is actually a 2.5.
I imagine this sort of music being played at a Cuban restaurant - De Camio a La Vereda was my favourite song of the album but that means fuck all really. Didn't understand a word of the Spanish lyrics and the vibes were relatively chill, good background music but don't think I'd listen to it out of choice ever again (unless I was asked to put some music on in a Cuban restaurant). Although, they may have been singing about something NSFW so in that case perhaps not.. Because I'm extra and I can't help but judge a book on its cover I'm gonna throw in an extra rating for the album cover: 5/10
Upbeat and dancing music but abit of the same stuff each song, good music to put on to cheer yourself up
Not for me
Jazzy
Meh. The story behind this album is more interesting than the actual music. Not terrible, but not great.
It's like Prog-Rock for Spanish music. Lots of good musicianship, not much to remember. Highlight Tracks: 3, 7, 11, 12
Hmm yeah, kind of not really my thing. I remember it being very fashionable to like this though. Maybe I need to see the film.
Really not my thing
I'm sure it's a decent example of the genre but it just sounds like the background music in every bar in Cuba
Nice enough chill vibes, but a bit too old school for me
Retro salsa
Pueblo Nuevo is a nice jazz song. I enjoyed Dos gardenias. Buena Vista Social Club (Song) was nice. Overall, not for me.
Some beautiful Cuban music came out of this album, and even though I couldn't understand the lyrics, I could appreciate the jam. This album was thrown together with a makeshift band in Havana within only 6 days! The music feels like a jam-sesh between friends at a local club, which might explain why it was so easy to record. The only reason I can't rate it higher is because I don't speak Spanish.
Sounds like something I've already heard accidentally in the background of a Mexican restaurant. Definitely joyous and fun but too repetitive for my tastes.
Lift music for lifts.
Chiquitos: Official Soundtrack
Not really my thing. Good background music but nothing special.
like cuban gypsy kings. very much sounds like restaurant background music. maybe that's its purpose and its really good at it.
Good background noise.
Good music to work to
