Reviews (page 11 of 12)
It's proper upbeat and you can tell they had a blast making this album. It really makes me want to enjoy it, but in reality, it's just not that great. The beats are sometimes really good, other times fine, few times boring and uninteresting. I'm not a fan of the rapping either, and for an hour long, 23 song album it gets too much. Maybe a harsh 2, and I feel bad about it because I want to like it more than I do. What makes it even worse is that (3 Is) The Magic Number is the song that plays when you first load up MLB The Show, and that game has been PISSING me the fuck off lately.
Oddio, non ce l'ho fatta a finirlo... Troppo ripetitivo
Jaunty! PSA vibes.
Ok, not offensive. just not my thing.
Meh
Not something I’d listen to again
--Intro... --(3 is) The Magic Number...opening your hip hop album with some School House Rock is a choice. It's a good choice --Change in Speak...something about the mix bothers me. percussion is a little muddy --Cool Breeze on the Rocks...skit --Can U Keep a Secret...wtf is this? This is somehow weirder than anything Dr Octagon has done and that's saying something --Jenifa Taught Me...not really feeling this. where's the hook? --Ghetto Thang...it's good but the beat is a little basic --Transmitting Live from Mars...interlude --Eye Know...I dunno, y'all, I find the production/beats on here pretty basic. Are the lyrics good? I'll leave that up to smarter people --Take It Off...I'm surprised at how hard I'm bouncing off of this --A Little Bit of Soap...sure --Tread Water...I don't know if every song has been the same tempo but it feels that way --Potholes in My Lawn...here we go. this is my kind of weird --Say No Go...you can't use a Hall and Oates sample! that's cheating! --Do as De La Does...wtf is this? part 2 --Plug Tunin'...another track I just don't feel. I think my issue is mostly the tempo. not for me --De Le Orgee...no. just no --Buddy...save me, Q-Tip! Of course I like this one. not sure how much of it is Q's or the Jungle Brothers' influence --Description...whatever --Me Myself and I...I'm just not vibing with the production. not much more to say --This is a Recording...I like the bass here --I Can Do Anything...what is with 90s rap and "doodoo"? --D.A.I.S.Y. Age...yeah, don't get this at all. it's basically an anti-groove
Soft rap.
nice Schoolhouse Rock sample but the orgy song kinda ruined it
Maso
Jesus f. Christ, i thought I'd never live this down...
I don’t care for this so much. I don’t get it. All I really know is that they said “Ecoute”!!! I agree with the Wikipedia that it's not like any rap album you or anybody else has ever heard. Unfortunately, it just wasn't for me.
Soundtrack for shenanigans and chicanery.
I really don't understand the love that these guys get. These are nursery school rhymes. And i'm not talking about the content we don't need gangster rap.But what we need is how about some complex lyricism?I mean, a lot of these songs are just so boring tribe called quest. You know, had a lot of clean, fun songs too.But they were interesting. The topics were interesting. The schemes were interesting. The construction of the songs were interesting de.La soul did not hit those marks
I think this is a 2.9 - I saved two songs from it but not all the way there for a 3.
Again, not a bad album. There are some good songs there. But overall, it's just not for me.
Dated hip hop
436/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
Too much silliness abounds in this album to concentrate on it or take it seriously. The highs are pretty high ("Me Myself and I", sampling Steely Dan, the one with the yodeling, the wordplay throughout about "jenifa") but the lows (the skits, the orgee, some of the boring "yeah I'm so great" stuff near the end) drag it down. I respect the originality on display here, but taken at face value it sounds more like an experimental mixtape than an influential album that I'd want to listen to again.
Old school! Never listened to the whole thing. I think I will stick with the hits. The skits we’re annoying.
2*. pas mon style
# Album Name: 3 feet high and rising # Artist: De La Soul # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Honestly, i was expecting big big things after reading the reviews. Firstly, the positives - the hits are fantastic. I love em. I can only imagine what it was like when they first hit. But sadly, this album suffers like a lot of american rap/hip hop with its stupid skits and ridiculously long track list. I mean 3 amazing songs out of 23 tracks?! This should have been cut down massively. I think it would have been much better. # Top Tunes: Me myself and I / Eye know / 3 is the magic number # Would I listen to it again? No. Just hits.

Well, unfortunately I was underwhelmed by the album. A few songs had some pop but the pop was the sample and the vocals only took away from the samples. I say unfortunately because I started enjoying music at about this time in 1989/1990. EPMD or NWA seemed to be way stronger lyrically and I hoped this was similar. Sounded like they had a lot of fun making it as 19-21 year olds but unfortunately it sounded like a bunch of 19-21 year olds. I wish I got it but didn't.
You could really feel that they had fun making the album. The vibe I get is of friends goofing around. I like that the album is so positive. I gave it a good listen, but to be fair I am not very good at hearing the lyrics to songs. I probably would need to sit concentrated with the lyrics in front of me to get the "intended" experience. I personally feel like the album has aged poorly. I get that it was influential and unique when it came out, but having listened to the things that come after this one it no longer stands out to me. I have also heard so many different spoofs of this style produced after this record that I can't take some of the songs seriously even though I tried. Some of the beats were good, but most of the album didn't really resonate with me. Honestly some songs just registered as noice. It did however just breeze by despite the runtime. A few songs I liked, including for example Eye Know, Magic Number. I am glad I listened to it and it was fun, but I will probably never feel the urge to listen again. Ultimately not for me.
I know of De La Soul from the collaborations done with the band Gorillaz. This is my first introduction to the group's own music. I have always pretty consistently given albums from this era of rap fairly low ratings, and this is not an exception. It's a fun album, but it gets to the point where the tracks don't sound unique after a while. Also, in my opinion, a bit too long. I still appreciate the lyricism, but I can not get past my hatred of the skits. There's one in particular (you'll know when you listen) that is completely unnecessary and brought me to the brink of ranking this a 1.
that's a no from me
Old school hip hop - it was not enjoyable though, a lot of the songs were redundant and annoying. The "skits" in between didn't make any sense.
Fun! But I believe this is the start of the destruction of music. Synthesized, nothing really new. In fact it keeps stealing from other songs.
Some bops but some songs felt more like novelty tracks because of lyrics.
I get it. Just don't like it much.
# 539 : 3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul This album feels like a hip-hop carnival—bright, bouncy, and occasionally baffling. It’s packed with charm and goofy skits, but also kind of overstays its welcome like a guest who won’t leave after dessert. A funky, feel-good time capsule of late-80s hip-hop that’s more of a vibe than a must-revisit. Great for a one-time joyride, but maybe skip the extended stay. Listen out for: (3 is) The Magic Number Listened : 05/08/2025
Pretty one-note
Best Song: Me Myself & I 2/5. Not my thing!
Too many interludes and overlong. Annoying in places too.
Great beats/sampling vs. Boring rapping/skits (The latter wins handedly, alas)
weak
Not my style
Started off pretty strong but got boring
Whatever - how do all the 1990s rap bands manage to sound the same?!
Had some fun beats, but not my jam as a whole.
Не врубаюсь. Ну и коллажи сэмпловые не увлекают.
It's one of the classic Hip hop albums that I really just don't like, it's kinda dumb and annoying.
Other than a couple interesting sample choices this is pretty… not great.
Similar sound to almost all tracks. Not my style of music.
just all sound the same idk some do groove tho
Funky and fun. Not my style.
that album sounds sooooooo dated now. early hip hop if you like that kinda thing. Not pour moi
de la seussical I turned it off at orgee and cannot bring myself to go back
the intro REALLY sets the stage for how “funny” this album is this shit made me wish I was 6 feet and sinking 💀 not for me
I met a monkey and I walked around! I did a dance but I didn't frown! Life is cool when you have friends. Giraffes, lions, in a pig pen! That's how this shii sounds to me 💔 Fav song: Eye Know
Standout Songs: Jenifa Taught Me (Derwin's Revenge) Eye Know Say No Go Me Myself and I
Heard of the group before. I might go to hell for this but I really don't vibe with most of 80s/90s hip hop. In my defense I'm a music over lyrics girl so hip hop is the literal opposite of what I'm looking for and the instrumentals of early hip hip have quite a same-y beat throughout the entire song 2/5
I really don't understand this album. It listens like a bunch of college mates just went to a recording studio and fucked around for an hour with a drum machine. I've come in blind so I might be missing some cultural significance but it sounds like a complete hodgepodge of simple, repetitive beats and one tempo raps with some in-jokes and teenage humour. On a plus note it's quite joyful and they seemed to have a good time.
not a big fan of the album, but when it was done playing, it lead to some good/fun 80s rap/hip-hop vibes.
I didn’t like it too much but I liked some of the drums and the experimental vibe
Almost too positive, threw me off.
Would make for decent background music if it weren't for the interspersed sketches. The album is also already long enough without them, so they make it a bit of a slog to get through. But the music is nice enough and makes me want to move, which is always a good thing in my book

The Magic Number is a good track but I didn't have lasting power with this album. It is not a genre I listen to often. I would not be opposed to listening to this album again, but I would not be searching for opportunities to do so.
2,5
DNF. Stopped at the orgie song and turned it off. Didn’t intentionally keep it off, just never turned it back on again. Not my cup of tea but also not the worst thing ive heard
Had some really good songs, a lot of the good ones had samples. Then a whole bunch of annoying crap that took up time.
Shit intro Maybe the song magic numbers is used by jack black in school of rock continue refrencing it. I like the frequent use of old piano in the background good hip hop Too many songs, one thing i HATE about hip hop albums. Like pharacydes etc.
Kind of all over the place. I wasn't into it.

There is a couple of minutes of decent ideas here. Problem is there is an hour of Rap around it. 2 stars or D-.
Prince of Bel Air vibes
Most of the album was okay but not great; I liked "The Magic Number" up at the front and maybe a few other tracks. The humor mostly didn't land for me. Speaking of which... reading about this album, it looks like this one is credited with starting the trend of hip-hop albums having skits? Hip-hop skits have been a continual source of fascination to me since starting this project so I'm actually pretty grateful to have a bit of that background filled in. It's weird because... the recurring skit here is pretty bad? Real cornball.
Love the samples and the direction it was going with hip hop but it fell short for me.
I thought I looked old school hip hop but this didn't really do much for me. There was some funky tracks in there and some classic tracks which I have heard samples from in Krafty Kuts sets.
Not my thing
A cool sound but the record does stay past it's welcome
quite o.k. for a hip-hop album - but it stays hip-hop for me.
The beats weren't bad. The vocals, however, were annoying most of the time, and Can U Keep A Secret was deeply upsetting. It made my skin crawl. And everything else is, at best, pretty lame.
It was alright. I enjoy soul music but none of the songs really stood out to me.
Aah! De La Soul! I didn't like their stuff back in the day, and I still don't like it now. This album bored the tits off me, with the exception of a couple of tracks. I'll give it a couple of stars, but that's all.
Alright
Don't like old wrap that much
Not my style of rap. It’s kind of silly and old school sounding.
норм
Mwah
2/5 this was fine
old school的 hip hop 听不太来诶
2 , slabo
They really didn't knock themselves out with finding new beats along the way. I remember this coming out. It felt like the 'clean' rap that was being pushed out at the time. Pre or post Will Smith, I don't recall. Never grabbed me, and listening now there's a little - I remember this. But not a whole lot else.
Old school hip-hop. Not very interesting in 2025
2/5 not for me
This album gets repetitive after a few songs and as such is the nature of rap.
This is the 2nd album this week that I am questioning why it is on the list. It isn't innovative, it isn't poignant and quite frankly it isn't good. The songs are mostly nonsensical, and goofy. I think there are much better artist to represent the genre in this time frame. Is the album fun yes, is it a MUST LISTEN? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Did not like.
meh
Muss man mal ausprobieren.
Not my fave...
Nicht meins
Not my thing at all.
Klassikko, mutta ei ihan omaan makuun. Sorgen.
Me no like
An album that is foot-tappable at best, outright annoying at worst. Some of these transitions sucked ass, the songs were well-produced and it seemed like the artists had fun creating this but I did not have a lot of fun listening to this. Highlight: Me Myself and I
Album was ok until about half when thru, then it headed south. Not my style and language was too potty.
One word to describe it is baffling. I thought the first song with the introductions was interesting and I would not have expanded on it at certain parts of the album. At this point, I am not surprised that such an idiotic, stupid, and pointless album is on the list. Sooooooo many great artists don’t have many albums but you gave these bums an album come on man. Also why does Apple Music have it in their top 100 albums of all time. This is just not worthy of that but it’s all subjective.
Totally mid. Better than any sort of gangsta rap but still totally mid. I don’t get the hype. All the tracks are just kinda juvenile and dumb. Also it is just entirely too long. 23 tracks is a ridiculous amount.
This is all a bit dull to my 2024 ears.
Already marked this down for being so goddamn long. And then some more cause it just isn't my thing.
Hmm has like 2/3 Nice songs on it and the rest is uncomfortable noise
Sin interés. No hay ningún disco de americana o country entre los 1001??
I like the idea of De La Soul more than the execution. Part of it was probably listening to the album during a 9 hour car ride and the judgement I received from my wife whenever they said “so and so has dandruff” for a minute straight. I see them as a similar niche to Tribe, but I like Tribe better.
Never really been able to get into hip hop/rap style music.
Tough listen for sure
*“3 Feet High and Rising”* by De La Soul is a light and playful hip-hop album from the late '80s, full of inventive samples. While it wouldn’t be my choice for focused listening, it’s perfect as background music. The album is a mix of different genres that create a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, putting you in a good mood.
Back when hip hop was innocent. Bring back those times.
Eh... I can see it's is important but not great
Meh. They should have said the music critics that rated these albums had a member of De La Soul in them.
This has a very Fresh Prinz, frat-boy feel to it. Abd it's not just cuz they sampled Steely Dan. I enjoyed it like Saturday morning TV.
Ok, I can't handle this kind of crap. I don't really enjoy hip hop or rap. The skits are just annoying. I can see why it might be influential but it's not for me. I do remember a few songs from the time it came out so there was a bit of nostalgia but not enough to make it a 3.
I cannot believe how wholesome this sounds...until De la orgee.... A bit sleepy other than Me Myself and I though
Confusing and forgettable
It sounds like they had a lot of fun making this album. I didn’t have much fun listening to it.
I'm simply not a hip hop lover and this didn't change my mind.
are these guys supposed to be funny? the rhythm is not bad i guess...
Not my thing
why does it need so many goofy skits, the (limited) actual music in this album wasn't even that bad
Not great. Many better from that era.
I just don't like this style of hip hop. It's incredibly boring and samey. This record is waaaayyyy too long. Can't go to 1 but it's a super soft 2.
Old school hip hop, kan ikke lige komme ind i det. Det er lidt ligesom funk, men bare mere kedeligt fordi der kun er beatet og bassen tilbage. Fint med origins, men for mig er tiden løbet fra det.
i understand the concept but i'm not really sensible to it
I felt like I was watching a school assembly rap about not smoking, then one of their songs was actually a school house rocks song
Odd, but I kinda like odd. Fun listen but I got tired of it after a while tbh (sorry). Didn’t dislike but wouldn’t necessarily go back to it! Love to expand my range though
Why are yodeling
Kinda goofy and annoying. The samples aren't particularly compelling. Not good.
didn't get my going... a little weird with the whole gameshow thing...
So this is one of those albums that I appreciate but don't really enjoy. The music is there and I really like that the lyrics aren't all about gang life and clubbing. But it's also not really my thing. Would be nice if more like this had become mainstream at the time but I know well enough to know that this group and this album were hugely influential even if I wasn't aware of them as a kid.
Pretty good, sometimes funny 80's rap. I don't remember hearing it when I was young but I enjoyed hearing it. Probably not something that I would listen to very often but I do like it. Easy to get into rhythms and good lyrics.
I've listened to some other De La Soul album that I liked much more, but this was kind of meh.
It was a good jam in the beginning, but got kinda old. Just a bit too long. They were a good vibe but idk it just couldn’t hold my attention for that long
This album is clearly a staple in hip hop for the backpack/alt rap sound. Although I recognise the importance of it, it sounds outdated to me and doesn’t hold up as well as a tribe called quest’s low end theory. Enjoyed some of the skits and some of the flows throughout Best song: BUDDY (Q tip feature was nice) Worst song: DAISY Age
Poetic simplicity, I like it. I'll listen again . I'll give it points for creativity, kinda like poetry jam in a cafe vibe, but it wears on me after a few songs. 2 stars
Maybe just from the album cover, I thought I would and wanted to like this more than I did. A lot of it sounded very similar and was not in my wheelhouse. Saved from a 1 by a cool Steely Dan sample (“Eye Know”) and another from Hall and Oates (“Say No Go”).
That's not my taste in musik.
I get the appeal but this genre of music is not for me at all.
It seems like they had a lot of fun making this album. However, that did not lead to a fun listening experience. This album felt like it was 80% skits and bad joke songs. The joke songs seemed like they were written by 8 year olds. They were all about doo doo and bad breath and stinky people. The rest of the songs on here were mostly just ok rapping with a couple decent exceptions. The beats on the real songs were pretty cool though.
I just never connected with this album. Seemed like the only songs that stood out were because of the sample used.
I understand that at the time this must have been a groundbreaking album but I didn’t relate to it that much.
I can definitely see how this is influential in so many ways, however I really didn’t like it. For me, when there’s talking in an album it kind of ruins it and makes it less music. I can understand why people like it and the impact it’s had on music to come, however that’s where my compliments end.
O no, more rap... But a little bit musical than others... ⭐⭐ for this reason, not for more...
Skimming the comments, I saw several bemoaning that this album wasn’t on Spotify. That has been rectified, it is on there today (05/29/2024). Meanwhile: I’m not a hip-hop fan, and nothing I’ve heard through this project has changed that. In clouding “2 Feet High and Rising”. On the plus side, it is not angry, violent and misogynistic. That sets it aside from most other hip-hop I’ve heard, and that’s good. It is also a bit more “hook-y” than most hip-hop. The sound is mostly open, no wall of sound. That said, the scratching / samples are still “not my thing”. I like the open sound, but the production / mixing just feel amateurish. Maybe that was intentional, though. I like the absence of angry, violent, profane lyrics, but these lyrics seem too far the other way, light and insubstantial. The interludes are stupid. I didn’t like it on The Who’s “Sell Out”, I don’t like it here. I’d like to give this a 3 as being the most listenable hip-hop I’ve come across here. But, I really didn’t enjoy it, and can’t imagine listening again. So…. 2/5
Für HipHop ok 2/5
This didn’t really speak to me.
Yo!Yo!Yo! I think this has lots of energy. And it sounds like they are having a great time! Some tracks seem pointless - A Little Bit of Soap, to name but one. Not my thing. Too long! And a bit irritating. More playground thang than Ghetto Thang. 3, alas, is not the magic number from me.
2/5 Enjoyed some of it but if you were to cut the stuff I didn’t like the album would probably be less than 15 minutes long. The lyrical content was also generally way too playful and childlike which isn’t for me but I suppose with albums like this you probably would not have gotten nwa
I'm sure this was influential but I'm not vibing with it. Uh, searching for positives...I liked the bass on Ghetto Thang. Unfortunately some of the tracks were just bad (ex: Take it Off, Do As De La Does). Needs a lot of editing, but even then I'm struggling to imagine listening to this again.
This one completely misses me, it’s not bad, but why is it considered a top hip-hop album?
More RAP, which I do NOT consider music. The audio is nice but ruined by the "talking".
kinda mid favourites: "The magic number", "eye know", "buddy"
No soy muy fan del hip hop
Interesting ideas, but always ends up sounding like Sesame Street. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
Meh, fun background music but no songs that I would save to listen to again. One song came on that I thought was cool and saved, and then realized it was from another of their albums.
Variety of hip-hop songs. Interesting mix tape.
No. Sketches are tedious, raps are ancient.
Probably they were good in the 80s. Some of the sampling is nice. But not my thing.
A few of their songs were enjoyable. Way too many sketches and call me old fashioned, but an entire track of explicit sex sounds is just going to make me uncomfortable. Not an album I will be returning to, but i did enjoy enough of the album to keep it from a 1 star.
I don't know about this. It seems rather silly to me. The wife likes it better than the last two though. She said it didn't make her want to kill people, so there's that. I'm just not sure that this fits into my lifelong internal definition of "music."
I didn’t love it
I can see why it's important, I can appreciate the fun of it, but I didn't really connect.
Awesome beats and flow but the lyrics were just to odd for me to really get into it. Will listen to some more of De La Sol though!
I have not heard of this album or hip hop group before. It reminds me a bit of OutKast because of the interludes on the album. I’m not the biggest fan of this genre so none of the songs stood out to me. I probably won’t listen again.
A bit boring, blended into the background and just sounded like a generic hip hop beat. Probably didn't give it the sit down and listen attention it needed, but not sure I want to now!
Interesting - in some ways I quite like the multi-layered approach of the album and it was certainly slightly ahead of the curve at the time. (No need to revisit it, though…)
Not my jam, but didn't hate it
Some of this album had a fun beat and I enjoyed listening to it. But I didn't love the quiz show bit and also "De La Orgee" kinda ruined it for me.
Eye Know was good, the rest is just not my thing.
Not my music
Ok I just don't like rap, but this... this was alright. I didn't hate it. I rather liked that it sounded upbeat and happy
I hate hip hop. But remember when hip hop was sort of lighthearted and fun? That's what this is. If you like nostalgic rap this is for you. It's not for me. It's not as unlistenable as modern hip hop but I got tired of it after about ten minutes. Because of the way the genre has changed, would this be considered novelty rap now? 2 stars because at least it has nostalgic value I guess.
It was fine
2.5
Heard good things. Maybe in the context of its release it was more groundbreaking, but it didn’t actually do too much for me in 2023.
Not my cup o’ tea, though it’s funny and groovy in spots.
Did enjoy some songs, but in general this is not my kind of music.
2/5
Manche coole Songs. Ist aber allgemein nicht so mein Geschmack. 4.9/10
I couldn’t have cared less, tbh.
Can hear the roots of hip hop.
It's rap, so...well, you know. And yet there are some actual melodies worth hearing here. So maybe one more star.
This style of music is not for me but I do understand why it made the list.
Not my style, not bad not good
5/10
3 is a magic number but outside of that didnt like it as much as Id hoped
Probably would have enjoyed when I was younger but no longer my thing
At first I thought it wasn’t good but it also wasn’t bad. Then, about half way through the album I started getting pretty annoyed that I was still listening to it. It’s just the same stuff over and over. There’s no substance.
Eine Nummer war gut: Eye Know Sonst zu viel Hip Hop :-)
An undeniably impactful on the history and development of hip hop, but not a particularly enjoyable listen. The spoken word style isn't my favorite and falls flat when combined with the often nonsensical lyricism. Also felt the game show framing device had a lot of unrealized potential. Favorite track: This is a Recording 4 Living in a Fulltime ERA
It's entertaining. Not something I'll likely come back to, but it's likable.
Inte bra
m'eh
Not as strong overall as I remembered.
It's fun, but feels pretty mild today. The humour isn't particularly funny but it's enjoyable hearing how much fun they had whilst making the album. It doesn't take itself too seriously.
Very disappointed in this one. I thought it was going to be a "smarter" rap album, but the lyrics are pretty crap and amateur. I think he rapped about poo-poo in his pocket and another song had poo-poo in his hand. Screaming about soda flavors (COCA-COLAAAAAAA, SPRIIIIIIIIITE). It was all a slightly edgier Young MC or Fresh Prince. Some of the music is good, but is any of the good stuff original? I heard Schoolhouse Rock, Steely Dan, Otis Redding, Ben E. King, Funkadelic, and those are just the ones I recognized.
One or two decent songs but overall not my thing. It is a cohesive album though
:/
Normally I love Jazz Rap, but I dont know, its not really grabbing me. To me a lot of the songs pretty much just sound the exact same.
The Magic Number // Eye Know // Plug Tunin’ // Me, Myself and I
I understand the cultural relevance of this album and I do enjoy hip hop and rap roots but it is what it is. A raw blueprint for what rap can be. For their time its a masterpiece but to today more spiritual rap like K dot, JID, and J cole, it doesnt hold up
sadly did not really like it ):
Didn't listen properly, maybe too upbeat for me yesterday.
Not feeling it.
I knew the era that 3 Feet High and Rising came out, but couldn't say for sure if I had heard a full track from De La Soul. "The Magic Number" resolved that question quickly, but the rest of the album was new to me. "The Magic Number" is a good representation of what De La Soul has to offer (and is my favorite track from the album). De La Soul sounds like a band that wants to have fun with their music. "The Magic Number" sounds a little retro, like they're reaching back towards some School House Rock, while using the latest sounds available to rap and hip-hop of this era. This album is rooted in its time period. For example, "Take it off" is like a fashion time capsule of the late 80s. These combinations of retro, leading edge, and the present moment are mixed together in an effort to play and have some fun. Sadly, in spite of the sense of play on the album there are multiple tracks that I would have to skip on a replay, possibly more if I were to dig down into all of the lyrics. Even though the band is at play, they unfortunately play "dumb boys" too well, with lyrics and content that I wouldn't want my mother or my daughters to have to listen to. I would have to admit that I probably took on the role of "dumb boy" quite often, but at this point I don't want to listen to that approach to lyrics either. There was some fun with a lot of this music, but the leading impression from this album by the end was "gross".
pass
Not for me 2/5
Love the samples but de la soul has never really been high on my list
A few bangers on here that I've heard before, but the in between wasn't that good.
bof serieux, ca commence bien maisa rp`s 1 heure c,est vraiment du pareil au meme . 2.75
Y qcyo medio pelo , es demasiado largo lo saque a la mitad pero no esta tan mal
This got old pretty fast. Unbearably long for how repetitive it is.
There's some cool beats in here to start; but it overall feels pretty boring and not very well produced. The game show interludes didn't really make sense to me either. The main rapper has a cool voice, but there isn't much else that he brings to the table. It got a bit better at the end, but nothing to write home about. It's a shame because I generally like this era of hip hop, but this wasn't quite it. Eye Know was a standout for this one.
I'm sure this was pretty prolific at the time it came out, but for me it just sounds like a worse Tribe Called Quest. They may have had influence over them which is tight but overall it's just an ok listen. I liked that song Eye Know with Otis Redding though. Oh of course Q-Tip pops up maybe that's where I'm getting the Tribe from idk. Dos.
.Best tracks are; Ghetto Thang, Tread Water, Potholes in my Lawn, Say No Go. Not as bad as I thought it would be as not a fan of Hip Hop or Rap
I would have needed to be approximately 3 rips high for this music to speak de ma soul. It was a cool concept and some songs were good (Magic Number, Eye Know, Me Myself and I), but most fell flat and felt repetitive.
C- Intro - 1 The Magic Number - 4 Change In Speak - 3 Cool Breeze On the Rocks (The Melted Version) - 3 Can U Keep a Secret - 2 Jenifa Taught Me (Derwin’s Revenge) - 2 Ghetto Thang - 2 Transmitting Live from Mars - 3 Eye Know (feat. Otis Redding) - 3 Take It Off - 1 A Little Bit of Soap - 3 Tread Water - 3 Potholes In My Lawn - 2 Say No Go - 2 Do As De La Does - 2 Plug Tunin’ (Last Chance to Comprehend) - 3 De La Orgee - 3 Buddy - 3 Description - 2 Me Myself and I - 2 This Is a Recording 4 Living In a Fulltime Era (L.I.F.E.) - 2 I Can Do Anything (Delacratic) - 3 D.A.I.S.Y. Age - 1 This was long and meh. Everything I hate in an album. Thanks for the Spiderman 3 credits though.
Have to say this didn't do it for me which I was surprised by.
Odd concept
Not for me. A couple of good songs I liked but not the rest of the album
I don't know man, i think I just don't like this kind of hip hop. there were a few songs on this album I liked (Jenifa Taught Me, Me Myself and I) but it felt way too long and most of the songs were pretty boring to me.
pretty good. i like hip hop. but it’s one of those albums that’s way too fucking long. the skits are cute/entertaining but they don’t make any sense. can u keep a secret just seems like some inside joke conceived after smoking a joint and then just recorded as a joke. it isn’t fire or funny. everything after tread water should’ve been cut. transmitting from mars should’ve been an instrumental no one wants to hear all that french crap , please. if this album was simply magic number, change speak, jenifa taught me, ghetto thang , eye know ,little bit of soap, and tread water this would be a strong three stars. however, they got greedy so for that they get two.
I liked the sense of humour shown in this album but ultimately it didn't leave an impression. Also, in several of the songs, the mixing seemed off as the vocals were overshadowed by the volume of the music. Pretty basic beats made this a fine listen but not a notable listen
I'm not sure if this inspired other artists and that's why it was included on the list or what. It was fine but nothing in here really stood out to me to make this a must listen album.
While this is a fun album I didn’t really enjoy it. Lots of random vocal interludes and I don’t need a song about dandruff ever.
I like De La Soul but I’ve never listened to this album and I don’t think I like it
Not my thing.
Generic hip hop.
Didn’t grab me.
p630. 1989. 2.5 stars Hip-hop/rap, so wrong audience. Well done of its kind though, and with a sense of humour. Well chosen samples, but unlikely to listen again.
This is the reason people don't think rap is real music.
Music is good, dont like the talk show in between songs
Funk on jees mutta tämä on alku-hiphopin tyyliin monotonista olematta monotonista eli tylsää läpeensä
Sounds like hiphop for 8-12 year olds in the late 80s. Boring, simplistic and nonsensical. Probably included 'De La Orgee" so it wouldn't be placed in the children's aisles at record stodes. Not absolutely atrocious though, so probably doesn't deserve 1*. Not far off though. 1.5*
*whispering* This album has dandruff
Really weak
Sounded like what early 90s hip hop sounded like. Why is hip hop obsessed with skits? They’re the worst
Skulle vara mer elektronisk musik än dessa hopplösa hip-hop album.
Well, a bit hard to track done the songs. What I could find (or remember) had a nice groove in parts, but I'd just rather listen to the source than the mashup.
Hip hop. Coñazo.
mostly forgettable early rap the most popular song isn't bad though 2.5
Was OK back in the day, seems kinda lame now. Background blather is irritating.
Fun, too long and the less than stellar parts take away from the joy of the true bops.
I can't describe a situation where I would prefer this album over any different one... so... that's a point for itself
I'm finding it very hard to get into this one. All the silly spoken word passages are very offputting
Its all a bit twee nowadays
Nope
I remember this getting played a lot when it first came out but never coming around to it - I found them a bit cutesy maybe? I can say that with the cast-of-thousands production we hear on Kendrick & Kanye, this, by comparison is one-dimensional and repetitive, but they were dealing with the tech and budget available at the time.
Some decent beats. Occasional good funk. Samples are fine. Also includes garbage like "take it off." Best of the 4 albums so far.
Although the grooves are mostly borrowed, at least they're there. But to drown them out in all that busy-ness and buzziness empties the whole experience. Ultimately, it becomes mind numbing fluff.
I didn't care for this. It's probably good but I was mostly bored. Sorry that's all I have.
eh
Sounds like funkmaster sex
I'm not a big fan of the old school hip hop, but I can see the appeal of this album. They have a pretty clean and fresh take on the genre for the time.
taste: 3/10 known: 0/10
Not my thing
I find this album remarkably annoying. It’s not objectively terrible, but if I listen to any more of it I think I’d tear my hair out.
Imo rap
I have no idea what this was but I came in thinking this would be fine but this was just garbage all the way through I cut it off half way in.
same song over and over, also aged like milk. extremely dated.
man. hitting a stretch of not so great stuff...
The mix is bad and overall it is difficult to listen to.
Yeah nah
No hip hop,
3 is a magic number ringetone kommer fra et af numrene. men ikke lige min kop te, lidt sjove.
I’m not a rap fan but I was excited to listen to this album because it has a reputation for being a classic. Unfortunately it fell flat for me. More repetitive, uninteresting music. I’ve never heard a group that likes to name drop their own group name more than this. This was a slog and a chore to get through.
Really don't like this one. It's a bit all over the place and feels quite childish. Worst one on the list for me so far. 2/10
Uncool
It's garbage day, good, I can take this out with it.
Not my style
Hip Hop, 56 eme album =>1/5
zzz
No me gustó, no es mi estilo
This album is stupid

Chopsticks and yodelling in the middle of tracks says it all for me! Quite a few tracks with a single basic theme all the way through, extremely repetitive. I remember a couple of tracks which were decent, but there's way too many I wouldn't want to listen to again.
Hip hopin klassikko, josta minä en välittänyt sitten yhtään. Ärsyttävän lapsellisia biisejä enimmäkseen, vaikka joissain sanoituksissa jotain ideaa olikin.
Vraiment pas fou
Don’t think i needed to hear this before i die tbh
Esse álbum vai entrar na lista dos que eu menos curti, foi cansativo.
Horrible me susurraron en el oído sin consentimiento… dnf :/
Pas mon style du tout et des morceaux énervants
Không phải gu.
Not what I was expecting. Started off ok-ish but there was whistling so 0 stars for that alone.
oneee
Meh
No
Even speed, listening was a waste of time
This hip-hop album is like a patchwork quilt stitched from funk, jazz, and imagination. Unhelpful as I was already having difficulty with IT being a quilt.
Skipped every one of these awful recordings after a minute or so and the album still took forever. A smorgasbord of inadequacy.
Nothing special
