I like Rush, but this album isn't my favorite
Not actually bad, but the 20 minute long overture song is a stretch of a "song" lmao
Rush is a great band that I don't really like.
6/10
Some long songs. Some short songs
So many of my friends adore Rush that I wish I enjoyed this more, it was good but didn't amaze me
got such a soft spot for these guys
It's an excellent album to start the day with, but I don't find a single song truly memorable. Perhaps the first track is impressive, but it didn't strike me as extraordinary.
I wish these prog rock albums would have more radio edits of their 17 minute songs. That would I could decide its bang average without wasting 17 minutes of my time
As a modern listen, 2112 doesn’t feel as dated as I expected; aside from the electronic/effect-heavy feel of “I. Overture,” most of the rock passages are surprisingly listenable.

OK...
Fun and enjoyable. ★★★
Ok

6/10 Favourite: 2112 Least Favourite: Lessons
I enjoyed parts of the title suite ("The Temples of Syrnix" is pretty good), as well as "Passage to Bangkok" and "Something for Nothing". The rest didn't do a lot for me. I'm not a huge Rush fan to begin with but this era where they go full prog in particular isn't my jam. Light 3 stars.
Was good. Never been a huge fan of these guys but still not bad.
I fear I can’t get down with Geddy Lee’s voice. Impressive as it may be, and it is. But that epic first song I already had saved for some reason and I must say it was impressive (if a little musically incohesice)
Decent
3.5
Для меня Rush слишком яркие и экспрессивные.
Gutes Album.
It just feels like why listen to this when I can listen to Zep? It's all the same cliches and It's hard for me to say this is better. Seems like a bridge from Zep to Queen, and not in a good way. 2 stars would be harsh, but 3 stars doesn't mean I want to listen to this again - What kinda space alien intro is this? - Wait this opening song is 20 minutes? - Dad rock, prove me wrong. Pretty good though. Neil Peart is on it with the drums - Ugh these vocals suck. Why not just sing normal?? - Completely fine, but too many rock cliches. Maybe I would have liked this as a high schooler
70s prog rock at its finest... if you're into that sort of thing. I am, every once in a while.
Not really my type of music but good to be exposed so something I wouldn’t normally listen to.
The rock-operatic first song knocked it down from four for me. I liked the concept and story but the execution and details left me wanting another draft.
Good
It's all right. Classic, not sure I would choose to listen to it out of all the things out there
Mukavaa metallia aikaansa nähden tutun kuuloista. Olikohan naissolisti kuulostaa ihan aikansa mies solistilta.
Lite coola ljud ibland men generellt ganska mid
it was fine, there were parts/songs were you could hear their influence on Mars Volta but I probably won't be returning to this record
Somewhere between Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, and to be honest I'd rather listen to either of them.
non so ben cosa dire, comunque le instrumental lunghe non si fanno cosi guys
I don't know, Rush is just fun.
later
This first song being 20 minutes is crazy, but the rest of the album is okay.
Very silly boys with a love for charming prog goofiness (fun!) and, unfortunately, Ayn Rand (yuck!)
I like the music but the screaming vocals in most of the songs are annoying. The album generally can't match the quality of "Moving Pictures".
Kind of weird, kind of meh.
It's ok, Neil Peart rips
instrumentally its very good but im not a fan of the vocals
I'm not sure what to really write for this one, it was pretty forgettable. Some good ideas and arrangements on the opening epic 2112 but it faltered pretty hard after that.
A Rush album other than Moving Pictures? Rush is pretty good and as long as you never look at pictures of Geddy Lee you'll be ok.
Cool mais 100% mon truc mais agréable
An amazing album that is very under appreciated compared many of their other later works
Pretty good
2112 is some accessible progressive rock. Rush had a good time with their jam session as they expand upon chords and tempo and play solos. But Rush staying so close to classic rock is what makes this album super easy to listen to. I also found it to be well-rounded, a good balance between their instruments. I'm surprised this is the first Rush album in 950 albums, though I hope it's not the last. I hear the beginning of Rush's well-known sound, particularly on the last song, but I know that Rush evolved past what's on 2112.
I'm not always the biggest progressive rock fan, but Rush is often an exception, and "2112" in particular is a standout! It is very approachable and goes heavy for those of us that enjoy hard rock and metal. Similarly, Rush has also always struck me as a band that is very good at balancing sounding both as if they're doing a really good jam session and as if they're playing the most intricately crafted composition, and this album also highlights that. It's hard to believe this is first Rush album I'm receiving this far into the project, but better late than never! 3.5!
This was alright. Rush is great but there only some parts of this that I could listen to a lot of. 3.5 goin down.
Plenty of strong riffs and cool ideas here, and I respect the ambition of opening with a 20min sci-fi epic… at least in concept. In execution, it's too heavy on the cheesy arena/dad rock sound. That's not a knock on their talent -- they're clearly great -- but it's not something I see myself returning to often. Standouts: The Twilight Zone • Tears
An album that is less than the sum of its parts for me. The 20 minute piece is amazing, but the songs other than The Twilight Zone (and maybe even including that one) are not nearly as good and drag it down. My main problem with Rush is that I feel they are uneven and this is a big example.
I must say, this is some pretty nice symphonic rock music.
3.5
Pretty cool.
6.4
Not something I’d listen to on my own but not bad
3/5 - I don’t know how many Rush albums are on this list, but they are a band that should have exactly one on the list. I enjoy the music more than a 3, but between Lee’s vocal quality and whatever nonsense lyrics he’s singing, I’m often left thinking that their albums would be better as full instrumentals.
I liked this album generally but I’m just not the biggest fan of prog rock. The futuristic theme was cool and I thought this album was like the perfect length. Fav song: the first track starting at minute 16 (idk which song it is 😭)
A decent prog rock album. It offers a lot of different ideas, some of which I really liked, particularly the start and end of the song '2112'. The rest of them... I felt very indifferent about. I still appreciate the variety. Thanks to it, the record doesn't end up feeling derivative. I also enjoyed a lot how technical the performances are and how good the production is. What I wasn't a fan of are the vocals. I found them to be a bit irritating, but they manage to be tolerable . In summary, I liked it but I don't have strong feelings about it.
6.5/10 not my cuppa
Ooh, first time with a full Rush album. Before my time, and not a big prog fan. Can't help but admire the musicianship even if the songs are a bit wank.
2112 is a great song but then it just goes downhill from there
J'aime ça Rush, mais cet album est contournable comme un cone orange sur une piste cyclable.
Ça me dérangerait pas que ça joue chez quelqu'un d'autre.
I liked about half of the album. Some of it was pretty boring and I think the first half of the album would have benefitted from some keys. Also what is Geddy Lee’s deal, you can’t understand half of what the guy is saying and they takes away from what seemed like interesting lyrics.
Nice, pretty nice!
Never been a big fan of Rush. Don’t really like his voice, too much guitar.
I appreciate their sincerity.
Pretty cool guitar solos, but nothing too special imo
I just do not like Geddy Lees voice. Terrific drumming! Unbelievable guitar. I hate his voice.
Why did no one tell me Rush was Led Zeppelin with jet packs… but like not quite as good some how
i can't decide between 3 and 4, enjoyable album but some bits were a little boring.
what is this Chinese-stereotype ass song 😭. Rest is good
Pretty entertaining stuff, but thats about it, pretty easily forgotten, except for the goddamn 'asian country' chime lol
Every song was just slightly above bland and boring. Love the storyline to the opening song though. 5/10
Pretty neat
Ok this was kinda a banger it was a mix of so many good parts of song. Good rock, gentle parts, really good lyrics, but weird album composition. First song is 20 minutes and a combo of like 6 songs, then there are like 5 shorter songs after? This is like a 3.8 if I could. I really enjoyed!
No usually a big fan of Rush based on radio play but this was decent.
Maybe 2112 was a career defining moment for the band but I did not find anything special about this album.
3 // I mean, it's Rush. Not the most popular songs, it's just kinda okay for me
Pretty solid for a 70s hard rock album, could’ve trimmed that first track, 10+ min of mostly instrumental was a bit much.
This was how my friend in high school tried to get me into Rush. It was not effective, and while I respect their music I don’t particularly love it
Great music, but inspired by A*n R*nd
I feel like I should like Rush - I like prog, after all. But, aside from a few tracks (that aren’t here) they just don’t really gel with me. This is not shit, but it’s just average rock music, with a little bit of tasteless cultural appropriation in A Passage To Bangkok and a weird section where Alex Liefson spends a minute or two just tuning up. I’ve tried, but I can’t love this.
Muy rock, no es mi estilo. Tears es más tranquila y me gustó más
😛
It feels so uncool to like Rush, but honestly I do.
I really love Rush, but this one didn't quite stand out to me. I think I liked the opener, but at 20 minutes, it's so damn hard to keep track of. And, the tracks afterward feel sort of simple, or maybe sedated, for what Rush is capable of. What I will say, is Geddy Lee's voice has never sounded better to me. Jesus he can get up there. All in all, not one I'll likely return to that often. Fave songs: - There were lots of moments in here that rocked, but I just can't be asked to go back and hunt for what they were. It was good though. - The Twilight Zone - Lessons - Something For Nothing
Its good
My mom’s favorite album
41/1001 :: RUSH - 2112 Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 6 Fav Tracks: A Passage To Bangkok Being that the Discogs community started on Twitter (X) you already know that “Rush Twitter” is a serious thing. A thing that I never understood. And frankly I still don’t understand. After listening to 2112 it helps. This album is features amazing musicianship but I don’t really like the singing. And I think that’s always been the case for me. The singing is too Lord of the Rings or some shit. If you lie it, I get it but it’s not my bag. That’s it. That’s all.
I don't mind a bit of Rush, but Gaddy's vocals are a bit much after a while. Musicianship is pretty good overall. Doesn't blow me away though.
Rush is always decent. The 20 minute opener was more engaging than I would have expected from a freaking 20 minute song.
I like this album but i feel its somewhat overrated, they have several better records!
I enjoyed the music but not the vocals! Overall wasn't really my style.
If it weren't for this guy's voice, I'd really like this album. Nice prog with whiny vocals. Boo. A 3.
Man, prog rock is so fucking cool. A lot of King Crimson vibes. Not too shabby.
Just fine prog-rock.
I've always wanted to like prog rock more than I do. And while I do enjoy Rush, it's mostly classic rock radio nostalgia. I never had a full on Rush phase... probably because I'm too impatient to really immerse myself fully in a prog rock concept album. A personal failing, I'm sure.
Imagine trying to sell someone on your demo tape and 2112 was the first song? Like, it’s good but who opens with a long intro song with no singing for so long. Also, Geddy Lee wouldn’t get far in this day and age where looks make more of an impression than music does. Anyways I forgot the title track was so long. I’m sitting here thinking, geez, I must be 5 songs deep now. Nope, song #1. This is fine. It’s what I thought a Rush album would sound like. Prog rock, spacey, jammy, unrelated lyrics. Choice cut: 2112
Probably one of the more enjoyable ‘prog’ rock albums we’ve had on here so far.
Fairly middle of the road prog stuff. Bit too 70s in places but also gets ricking in others, and I found myself enjoying it.
Other than a spacey noise at the start, calling a song ‘Overture’ and making it really long, and some slightly absurd lyrics, I’m really struggling to work out what’s remotely prog about this album. It’s just a hard rock album, nevertheless, a half decent one at that. The singers vocal are strong (in a post-Plant pre-Rose kinda way) and when they get rocking it’s got some decent heft, the last track the pick of the bunch. Decent effort, could be a grower.
Some good ones but for some reason it feels like homework.
Really enjoyed side 1, very coherent. Side 2 dragged a little
Quasi eine Rock-Oper, ganz nett!
Oh, boy - the ultimate Canadien, prog, themed album from the great RUSH - 2112. What does it all mean? Per Wiki - "2112" tells a story set in the city of Megadon in the year 2112, after an intergalactic war in 2062 forces many of the planets to be ruled by the Solar Federation (symbolized by the Red Star on the cover artwork), where individualism and creativity are outlawed. The population is controlled by a cabal of priests living in the temples of Syrinx, who take orders from giant banks of computers that control all aspects of life ("The Temples of Syrinx"). An unnamed protagonist finds a guitar inside a cave and rediscovers the lost art of music ("Discovery"). Upon playing the guitar to the priests, they destroy it and declare music a waste of time and against the computers' plan ("Presentation"). In a dream, an oracle shows him a planet established simultaneously with the Solar Federation, where an elder race flourish in creativity and individuality ("Oracle: The Dream"). He awakens, depressed that music is part of such a society that he can never be part of and kills himself ("Soliloquy"). Another planetary war begins and the elder race successfully take down the Solar Federation, but the song ends with an ambiguous spoken ending: "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation: We have assumed control" ("Grand Finale"). Peart described the ending as a "double surprise ... a real Hitchcock killer". Clear as mud - side 2 - is just prog rock jams, a little much for me on most of these tunes, but it is 2112 that serves as the epic savior of RUSH that propelled them to legendary status. Love it, love it, love it in all it's weird greatness - "We are the priests, of the Temples of Syrinx" - Great line
3.4 2x fun, catch up 8/25/2025
Heavy rock and roll energy. Uncompromising in sound and style. The opening song is epic. Although not my cup of tea, I can now appreciate the sound and talent of Rush.
Drums and vocals are very clean, I get the appeal, I wish it resonated a little more though!
a little too 70's. Very hair rock whiny vocals at times.
A lively listen. It's complex and wild because it can be, and we all need a wee bit of this from time to time. It's fun, but it's not memorable.
What a weird journey .
As a lad, I was well into Yes. This was around the time of GFTO, and Rush seemed to be the flavour of the day for the other guys at school. I never saw the attraction, but view do change with time, so I looked forward to reevaluating my opinions. Nope. Still a rock band with delusions of Progressive-ity.
2112 is the clear highlight here, but everything else is pretty great too. On a more random note, I don’t think I’ve laughed harder at a song this year than when “passage to Bangkok” used the “your phone ringing” riff. 4/5 Edit: Other than the truly excellent first song, nothing has really stayed in my head, so I'm dropping it a little. 3.5/5
Goed doorheen te komen
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: 2112 Overture / The Temples of Syrinx / Discovery At about the 3 minute mark (and at about 17:30) of 2112 Overture, I am strangely reminded of the music present in the video game Risk of Rain 2 (The Rain Formerly Known as Purple); the same kind of Power guitar shredding the music in that ROR2 has. In A Passage to Bangkok, that little ditty that is typically associated with Asian culture, feels a tad um... jarring in today's world. I don't know if it's downright offensive but it definitely caught me by surprise hearing it. Otherwise the album was perfectly adequate.
RIP Neil Peart. You were a great drummer who wrote shitty lyrics. I ain’t trying to listen to your mini rock opera adaptation of a whack ass Ayn Rand fable. Side 1 basically unlistenable bc of this and the music essentially being diet Canadian Tommy. Side 2 has equally bad lyrics but they verge on charming with their one off explorations of themes as goofy as white boys traveling through Asia and a tribute to the Twilight Zone. The band also legitimately rips at times. Overall I prefer Moving Pictures. Rush’s nerd prog is much more digestible when married with ‘80s new wave. But maybe that’s just me!
Nerd rock. I gotta respect the hustle, but it's not really my thing.
Solid album with a great opening. I felt the album kind of went downhill by the second half and didn't have as many enjoyable tracks though.
Very strong first song, decent rest of way. Though the hard 70s rock mixed with prog sound is great! 3/5
What's up with prog bands making 20 minute songs that are really 3 songs on the same track? Its weird to me. But otherwise its Rush and that's good. I love Gettys voice and dude can play some bass and at the same time? I will never get over how hard that must be. All the musicianship is incredible. But its not all the compelling sadly. It was a good time but I didn't save any tracks. Its a bummer but its the way it is. Still positive but not a life changing experience
Har stor respekt för Rush i helhet och 2112 är en odödlig klassiker, men dom har mer intressant musik på andra album tyvärr. Med det sagt tycker jag detta albumet ändå platsar på listan!
Not as good as the other Rush album I've had (Moving Pictures) but still a lot of fun. Solid album. Best song: The Twilight Zone
Not really my thing but it wasn't horrible. The voice of Geddy Lee!
Rush's epic concept record about freedom of though, government control, etc, and the first one with Neil Pert on drums and lyrical duties. The fact that 2112 is dedicated "to the genius of Ayn Rand" and lyrically inspired by her writings gives me a bit of pause, but otherwise this is a solid 70's rocker. Geddy Lee's voice sounds great, and the band is excellent form. This is Rush's first big, big album, and it shows in the scope of it's ambitions. At the end of the day, it's very much a product of its time and there are other Rush albums I like more.
me gustó la medida entre rock progresivo y un rock más pesado
Not my favorite prog album. The musicianship is incredible. The lyrics and vocals, not so much.
Rush’s 𝟤𝟣𝟣𝟤 suite is an exhilarating prog-rock journey — ambitious, theatrical, and genuinely exciting. Unfortunately, the second half of the album falls a bit flat in comparison, with shorter tracks that feel more like standard hard rock than something truly special. A landmark for its title epic, but the rest struggles to keep up.
Sadly it didn't rock my world :/
I tapped out halfway through the first song and the rest was underwhelming compared to rush’s best stuff.
Ah, Rush. Another band I've heard about x100, but never listened to outside of a few songs. I'll note that I didn't really care for those songs very much going into this, but I didn't hate them or anything. Listening to this album, it becomes quickly clear that they are very talented musicians. The compositions are less vibey and more intellectual. Kind of like a thinking-man's band (...I guess that's what they are). There is strong guitar throughout, and it sounds good tone-wise. The songs had plenty of rocking moments and interesting lyrics too. I didn't notice the rest of the instrument components as much or as often, though. So what happens when you put those strong guitars, interesting concepts, and well-thought-out compositions together? For me, what I got was disappointment. I don't know what it is exactly, but nothing about it was all that attractive to me as a listener (other than the guitar at times). If I had to guess, I think it may come from their seeming effort to make the music more intellectual. For me, music is more about heart and soul than brains. Especially rock music, which should have a lot of fun in it. Perhaps that's why I appreciate bluesy stuff more; you really feel it when done right. I didn't feel much coming through from this. It's not sterile like plenty of music can be, but it is missing some soul. I thought the first half was better than the last half. The 2112 segment(s) were cool and interesting, had rocking parts and subtle parts, and flowed well. It was mostly fine with some good spots in it. That didn't really hold true as much for the rest, which felt more pretentious and boring. Even the softer song didn't evoke much emotion for me. I guess that's a long way to say I found this pretty meh. I know plenty of people like it, and there are parts where I get Rush's larger appeal. But it's just missing something for me. I don't think it's bad, but I can't say I thought it was much more than fine. Overall: 2.9/5
Loved the first song/intro. The rest was eh
Pretty good, lots of energy, variation springing off the songs, but not quite my jam
I have mixed emotions about this album. Really enjoyed the technicalities of it but some of it was too minor for me and I didn’t care for it. I want that upbeat rock.
Sounds like .38 special on acid
The 20-minute opener rules. The second track starts with the “oriental riff” and pulled me right out of my reverie. I understand it was the 70s, but I find that kind of musical shorthand lazy. This is post-“Kung Fu Fighting” for fuck’s sake. That aside, this is pretty good prog rock that thankfully sounds like prog rock. (I’m still recovering from that EL&P album.) I enjoyed it more than I expected.
its not bad but i just dont think this band is for me they just have this sort of floppy toothless vibe to me on this album idk maybe thats controversial sorry
Don’t listen to much prog but this sounded pretty much like I expected not bad not great.
WE ARE THE PRIESTS OF THE TEMPLE OF SYRINX the opener rips pretty hard in spots. Rest of the album is just fine
It's good, but if this is peak Rush, I get why I don't listen to them very often
Better than expected for a "prog" rock band!
Has some fun moments. It was pretty easy to listen to and inoffensive. Didn't strike me as much as some other more well known Rush songs.
Some stuff I loved, some weaker bits. Would listen again, made me want to discover more Rush.
I’m not a proggy guy but even I can see this album would act as a great introduction to prog rock, it’s an awful lot of fun and an accessible example of the genre. If you loved this it could point you to some tricksier, harder stuff. There are gorgeous performances from people who have a strong enough understanding of how to write music to be able to turn it into a full theatrical production. You don’t need to closely follow the plot of the opening 20 minute track to admire Rush’s confidence in turning half of their album into a sci-fi epic. If I was to critique this track, I think the different parts could have more directly transitioned into each other.
Science Fiction Rock. They are the archetype. Favorite Track: The Twilight Zone
20 min intro is insane
3.5
Couldn’t really get into it
I think it's fascinating that having a 20-minute track these days is not of note, but back then it represented an entire side of a vinyl. That track should have been 21:12 long, just needed 40 more seconds of guitar jams. I actually enjoyed the guitar/drum jamming, don't like the dude's voice
I like Rush and I recognize their talents. Visually their incredible musicians and together they make a very unique sound. However, this album is just a little bit too, Prague for me. It dips its toe into the experimental more so than the rock ‘n’ roll. I listen to it twice and I can listen to it without a problem, but I found myself getting bored.
Not something that I particularly enjoyed. Nothing offensive, but nothing really stands out at all. Song: The Twilight Zone Rating: 5/10 (Boring) Stars: 3/5
This was cool. I’d never really listened to Rush before so it was cool giving them a listen. Some really cool stuff but sometimes it felt like it dragged a bit.
Never grabbed me.
Idk its fine, it just feels like prog rock with all the good bits removed. I hate his stupid Robert Plant ripoff singing voice, also quite alike Robert Plant, his voice is much better when he doesn't scream. The long multiphase song at the start is cool, but it doesn't really thematically have anything tying it together, so it might as well just be multiple songs instead. I don't mind the hard-rock and blues-rock stuff to much, its just the singing and quite a lot the songs just aren't that interesting. Favourite songs: the long one, the twilight zone. Overall around 5/10
I really like all the nerdy sci-fi imagery. I totally understand why this is here and why people like it, but I can’t get past the shrillness in the vocals.
Hmm… sometimes you feel disgusting
É, não gostei
I liked the opener, but overall the album is a bit forgettable. Also not the biggest fan of his vocals.
3/5
track 1 is just pretentious bullshit
Okay. Nothing to write home about. Sounds like someone deciding to make an album that sounds both like Led Zeppelin and Yes and failing to be as cool.
Pretty alright, sounds a lot like Guns and roses though
Awesome guitars, fun and catchy songs. Not really a fan of the dude's vocals though. Actual score: 3.5 stars. Would I revisit: yes.
It was okay. All of the members are obviously great musicians and it was well recorded. Sounded like 5 years ahead of its time. Compared to a similar album such as "Close to the Edge" by Yes I just wasn't moved as much by it.
Alright. So I’ve never listened to Rush, though I’ve heard of them and like a lot of rock and prog rock stuff. My first impression was it sounded like Spinal Tap. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing - Spinal Tap wrote some great songs. But then I heard the voice. I didn’t like it, and if it’s one thing I’ve learnt from doing 1001 albums it’s that if I don’t like a singers voice, I won’t like the band. (To quote Pavement: “What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?”) Also, lines like “the meek shall inherit the Earth” and the “Chinese-y” riff in A Passage to Bangkok are really embarrassing and cringey. Nonetheless, there were some guitar parts and bits of the music I quite enjoyed. I didn’t hate it. I just thought it sounded a bit silly. This started with a twenty minute “overture” which was VERY PROG. I see there’s another album of there’s coming up which is meant to be more pop music, so that’ll be interesting to compare to this.
I’m still completely undecided about Rush - technically amazing, does it translate to me enjoying, I’m not sure…
Rush is amazing, but I'm not into 20 minute songs.
Not bad
The fact that the first song is 20 mins long is very impressive. Don’t know if I would go out of my way to listen, but I appreciate it as art.
Sometimes I find this stuff really cool, and other times it leaves me cold. Prog is like rock but with the danceability taken out - sometimes I think people who get really into the technical side of playing instruments forget the point of music (see also Jazz). That doesn't make it a bad listen necessarily, but it misses some key magical ingredient for me
Musically this was pretty cool. I like prog and I like prog that has 20 minute songs. My biggest issue with this era is the singing.
Nem rossz apuka rock, az első szám benne van a gta sa-ban
I used to be a die heart Rush fan, but then I started digging into their lyrics. The much I think Neal Peart was a great drummer, the much I love their music and sonics, the much I despise them now for what their message was. How can anyone with an intellect and at least a little bit of empathy come to favor the shallow and mediocre reasonings of Ayn Rand or successors? Social Darwinism at the most dreadful. Just look at the state of the world in 2025 and witness the havoc the Musks and Thiels are creating. Urgh. One star for the lyrics, five for the music.
It’s okay. The first track was weird: space noises followed by intense drumming. The slower tracks like Tears were pretty good. On the faster tracks I feel like I’m being yelled at rather than sung to. A once through I probably will not revisit.
Reminded me of Led Zeppelin vines in some ways. Wasn't for me but didn't hate it.
Tried really hard to love this but just can’t force it.
Good album but not a great fan of Rush
yes a lil wanky but it is rush and rush rules
Solid album
Good stuff, a high 3 for me, not a 4 though.
Bit weird!
Cutscene to 1976 - upon a first listen, nerds of the world immediately suggest the 2112 Overture as their DnD campaign theme song. Another funny example of suuuch a weird band somehow getting popular.
i expected better. it was not bad, but nothing actually captivated me
I'm a middle of the road Rush fan, this was a middle of the road Rush album.
Is a solid 7/10 album
oh yeah? well fuck you
Unique vocal sound. The only rush song I knew prior was Tom Sawyer, so entire album was new to me. It's just good classic rock. Not anything annoying, nothing truly amazing to me tho.
A masterpiece of a rock album. Nothing says 70s rock like a 20 minute, 7 part ballad of electronic squealing. And what’s that? There’s more? Bonus content? I’m sold. Would certainly recommend to any hard core rock enthusiasts. As for me: 3 stars.
If you gave me three words to describe this album, well I’d only need one: band. For some reason this album just gives band. Like I would expect to see stock video of people playing a dark stadium and playing this music. They do band well for sure, it’s just not extremely interesting to my brain. The lyrics were interesting when they happened, which wasn’t a whole lot. I also liked the album as a package, I think they did a good job making it all work together. But the biggest dock on points may be that I hate the album cover. Bad album cover. Sorry! Not sorry actually.
Loved this as a kid. I like some of their other songs better!
- Kult tromme-ekko i første låt - Litt tynn, nasal og irriterende stemme på vokalisten - 2112 definisjon: «2112 means that progress and direction are happening even if you don't feel like you are going anywhere fast.» Fint budskap. - Crisp og raske trommer, minner litt om «in the court of the crimson king» sine trommer.
decent
Classic hard rock album with some nice tunes.
"Weird to throw a bit of 1812 Overture in there..." *looks at album title again* "Ohhh." Went into this one with no idea what to expect. I think I liked parts of it but it's kind of uneven. Side A's sci-fi plotline is a little trite - a guy from a society where creativity is outlawed finds a guitar in a cave and rediscovers music - but it at least adds a little off-kilter flavor and the music is generally enjoyable. After that 7-part, 20-minute opener there's the weed tourism anthem "A Passage To Bangkok"- dumb. "The Twilight Zone" gets it back on track but then "Lessons" and "Tears" are forgettable.
So happy our randomizer took us back in time in the Rush catalog. This is more a purest prog album reflective of the other prog titan contemporaries at the time: Yes, Genesis. Fun listen. I did not like “Tears.”
Two Rush albums in a row was….a lot. I liked it more than Moving Pictures, but not all that significantly.
Some transcendent moments keep this at a 3 for me but I’m all Rush’d out
sort of hard to overcome the "rush" of it all, but honestly enjoyed this more than I thought I would. heavier than I realized, too.
Yessssss yesssssss I like this.
The story of the man who REALLY wanted to trade his vocal chords for a bionic Fender Stratocaster/Marshall Amp inside his throat. As others have said, the title track is a fun way to spend 20 minutes. but the following 5 tracks just feel like worse drafts for the opener. It'd make sense it it was released as an EP with these tracks for the diehards but they serve no purpose being there. I'd have much rathered a 2-track record, with the second being 10+ minutes and possessing the dynamics and charm of the first. Eh? 5.5/10 Fav Tracks: You know...
I already listened to this on 05/09/2024. I don't have it in me to listen to it again, even if it's short - it was pretty gruelling: "Weird ass album. I enjoyed the instrumentals, the guitars and drums were great - but the fucking vocals just sounded like a Robert Plant ripoff. Secondly, what the fuck was with the oriental riff in the Bangkok song? What the fuck? I'd give this a 4 if it wasn't for the shitty vocals. It's listenable though."
Close to 4 stars
Slightly bombastic prog rock. Almost good until Geddy Lee starts hitting the falsetto notes and then it all falls apart for me. The 2112 suite is lyrically dull if not dubious with its heavy Ayn Rand references. The second side shorter tracks are much better. My favourite track is Tears as Geddy tames the high shriekiness and the melody is great.
I like rush and this is a classic.
What I like about this album: Great bass work. Some cool riffs (in particular the one in «A Passage to Bangkok). Great solos. What I dislike about this album: No really good songs. The first track, which is only one track because the bloke ego master ed the album couldn’t be bothered separating the disjointed pièces of music and tuning i to several tracks. I really should rate this album two stars, but the musicianship tips it to the band’s favour
Okay album, some experimental stuff 3/5
Not my cup of tea, but nonetheless quite good.
Rush is great
Sonos doesn’t want to play the whole album at one time
2.5
Not bad. A bit too instrumental. 3/5
Muy de su época ajsjsjjaja. It’s okei not great
Meh it was ok Didn't like it as much as their other album - Moving Pictures Forgettable 3 ⭐️
LIstened to half of this, it was oaky but nthing spectacular
They def weren’t rushing… very on the best rock music. Pretty cool and def better then the average rock album
Softer kinda of rock, did cool stuff, it was good.
Yup, this is quintessential Rush!
I don’t think I’ll ever be a fan of Rush, but I appreciate what they’re going for I suppose.
To be honest, this goes pretty hard. The vibe is not what I need, but I can hear the drums, guitar, and vocals ripping. The affectation of the vocalist and the subject matter leave a lot to be desired, but I don’t hate it.
Progressive soprano rock, but average.
Didn’t enjoy this as much as Moving Pictures (which I now would give a 5). Generally enjoy the sound of Rush, but these songs just didn’t hit the same way. Also, the use of - what google tells me is called the “Oriental Riff” or “Chinaman Lick” - on A Passage To Bangkok is a bit of a shame and really took me out of what was otherwise a good song
Pretty standard stuff tbf, but easy listening. The only Rush song I know and do really like is Tom Sawyer. But not on this album. Simpsons: Not that I can find. Pretty pivotal to the plot of the film I Love You Man though
Never really got much into Rush, that has not changed a great deal listening to this (twice), not really the kind of progressive rock I can get into too much (a bit too cheesy for my liking), although being force to listen to a Rush album from start to finish I definitely appreciate the guitar work, it definitely rocks hard, find the vocals and lyrical content somewhat off putting, ⭐⭐⭐ (3.5 really)
20 minute rock rhapsody hell yes
The sound that started the Rush phenom. They arrived at Moving Pictures.
Never heard this one before. Love the guitar work overall. Throughly enjoyable listen. 3 stars
I don't mind lengthy songs but 2112 Overture wasn't too great. The rest of the album is fine.
I like the fact that it starts with a concept-like connected song, but why couldn't we just... split them up? You know, The Wall is not a single 120 minutes long song. Strong 3 or weak 4, but not my personal favourite
I thought this was a Led Zeppelin spinoff at some point.
Never got into Rush. Great band, great sound. They influenced so many bands I love. Just not me, really.
Enjoyed this. Dads favourite album 7/10
Great childhood album
A pretty good laugh this! Funny little motifs and good energy. Wouldn't go back for more but was entertaining at the time
Well it does exactly what you expect it to. Lots of guitars, classic rock, surging choruses and whatnot. I generally found it very cheesy, but hey, if that's what it's supposed to be, that's fine, but I'm just not sure how self aware Rush are. Also, I can't listen to Rush without thinking about I Love You, Man.
good stuff cheers x
Probably well-deserved in terms of quality and progressiveness to rate this high, but I've listened to the album three times now and not one song really seams to stick. Only, each time I get to ``Tears'' I remember that I'm actually listening to the album, and I do enjoy the melodies and chord evolution. The rest is probably just not my particular taste in music.
Rush is so cool haha. I love that they doubled down on their freak flag. I think I like this album more in theory than I like listening to it. I like their other stuff more. I think I've mentioned it before but as a Coheed and Cambria it's a blast hearing so much influence.
Oh I know this one 🔥 I think it will be a 4. its probably a 7.5 for me. First half is much stronger than the 2nd half I think. i think i gotta put it at a three. Lots of moments I love but i think there are 4 or 5 other Rush albums i would revisit before this one.
This is an album I should be loving, but I don't. Hard rock is just not that much for me right know, really. I can stand this, I mean, but it surely doesn't bring me any pleasure or excitement. I can sense the writing is pretty solid but alas....Nevermind. Probably a 2.5-3/5.
Fine, but a bit too stadium and not enough prog for my liking.
Not my jam
Great guitar playing, but seriously rush? Your first song had to be 20 MINUTES?? It’s made of like 7 different songs anyways. I get that you want it to tell a story but maybe just… tell the story w 7 different songs? Musically I enjoyed this album however, and I’d be willing to bet money that my dad got stoned and listened to this album at least once when he was in high school. 3.3/5. Fav song: a passage to bangkok
Yeah just not my thing but it was fine
Good album about saving rock
I generally quite like a bit of prog but I found this a bit inconsistent and over the top in places. The bits I liked, I really liked but they got a bit lost in the noise here. I certainly won’t mind coming back to this but I probably won’t seek it out too often.
The general feel I got from this album was continuously asking myself, "Oh my god, is this guy still talking?" I can respect how good all these prog rock musicians are at stringing together interesting passages of music, but I just can't get myself to give a shit about whatever the fuck they're playing.
The album opening with a 20-minute song was... a lot. It objectively sounded nice with great musicianship, but it all blended together and didn't have any discernible themes or hooks or melodies. It was just really cool sounding guitars. This isn't an album I'd reach for again but it wasn't bad. Another middle of the road one for me.
Kind of a fun 80s vibe but not sure I'd re-listen. Lessons was probably my favorite song
I can appreciate what they did for their first track. The rest of the album didn’t offend me either. Not really my music though. A little too shouty. A little too much electric guitar.
3,5. bom album prog
Awwww... little baby Rush starting to form their signature sound. I only really know established-classic-rock-radio-Rush. This album is a cusp of who they were in the soup of heavy metal rock and roll, and what they became after disco dethroned rock from the radio. I'll probably never listen to this album again, but it's an interesting bit of history for me.
19/1089 - Voice is too high and has a weird effect on it that is quite grating. Instrumentals are alright (technically very proficient).
Decent. Not my favorite Rush record.
I love Queen and this album has some great tracks but it feels like it jumps into too many musical styles and is a bit of a mess
I really hate Rush. I don’t hate this though.
I know Rush. I do know of this record, never listened to it and do know that it is a classic/legendary record. Pretty good, very progressive, experimental.
it's alright
It’s nice to see that Rush was included on this list, although there are better Rush albums than this one. Perhaps they will appear later. Not that this was horrible, I thought it was standard Rush.
I always used to mix up Bush and Rush. After listening to this album I don't think that'll be a problem for me anymore. Bush is the band I like, and Rush is the band who credited Ayn Rand in the liner notes. OK, that's a bit harsh (even if it's true). I do in fact like 'Tom Sawyer', which is Rush-not-Bush, although that's not on this album. Plus Geddy Lee is my hairdo twin, whereas Gavin Rossdale was simply Gwen Stefani's boyf. Anyway, starting off with a 20min guitar-heavy song here isn't really my idea of a good time, but I do find the mini-musical plot cute (and evocative of both Meat Loaf & Hedwig and the Angry Inch). They have a distinctive sound which is at the same time similar to other bands, but I bet Rush came before a lot of those bands, being from the 70s(!!). I appreciate that they aren't boring, but I also find it hard to take this kind of music seriously (and I'm not sure if I'm even supposed to). I never heard of "prog" before this website, and now it's font size 16 in my life wordcloud, but I still don't quite "get it". That's worth a 3 from me I guess.
I bought this album because I saw quite some hype around this album. it wasn't really what I was hoping for, but it's not bad at all. I was hoping for something more like Subdivisions.
Underwhelming truth be told, 2112 wanted to be Close to the Edge but didn’t come close. Some good moments 3/5
I enjoyed that huge first song and tears in the second half was decent. Probably wouldn’t go back
Rush is firmly on the OK side of my musical taste—good, but not quite enough to make me piss sunshine. Three stars, done. On a funny note, though, the 20-minute opening track features a riff around the 18:20 mark that’s strikingly similar to the opening riff of Dingo’s song Rio Ohoi.
Like I mentioned before in my Moving Pictures review, I've heard "Exit...Stage Left" and "R30" quite a bit, so on this one there was a familiar track too. Namely "A Passage to Bankok", but I've to admit the live versions are much better, especially in sound. This album's songs benefited from the touring and playing, it's not the best sounding, but the songs are great.
Instruments were all insane. I just couldn't get past the vocals. Seemed annoying at times
I generally like Rush, but I feel like this isn't their best album. Maybe I'm not qualified to say that, though, as I haven't given their entire catalog a proper listen. This didn't move me, and there weren't any solid hits on it. I'll give this a 3.
I'm not that familiar with Rush beyond their well known hits, but I was glad for the opportunity here to explore them more. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would; I appreciate all the interesting moments and expert execution throughout. 3.5
Rush is truly a great band. This is a bit more tame of an album from them though, but still good listening.
I'm sorry I can't stop thinking about the use of the 'oriental riff' on "A Passage to Bangkok".
It was decent. Nothing really life changing though
Fairly ok
Listened to 40th anniversary album. Covers better than the original songs in most cases
Нормальный альбом, женский вокал, довольно таки классический
This was back when they really sounded like Spinal Tap
Not bad but not my thing again.
3/5
Didn't really know what prog rock actually was, was decent enough
Bereits bekannt. Listen 3/5 Again? 3/5
Maybe I would be one of the 7 women spotted at a rush concert. I don't think I would regularly listen to this but after listening to John rant about how technically skilled they are and watching a million youtube videos of them performing live I'd be lying if i said it didnt grow on me a little. Plus every cameo they've done in a tv show or movie indicates they have great senses of humor and don't take themselves too seriously and I respect that.
High School me found the opening suite impressive, older me finds it to be Wagnerian prog rock that lacks feeling in spite of its Musicianship. Also Pert clearly hated empty spaces and had to fill them with unnecessary flourishes.
Odd
I'm a huge prog fan (specifically 60s-70s prog) and I'd never listened to rush so thought this would be right up my alley. I was a bit disappointed, I felt like they didn't bring much of a unique sound of their own that so many other bands of the time did other than Geddy Lee's vocals. A fine album but a fading memory in prog history. 3/5
I like rush, but not something I just put on
I see this album talked about on Reddit a lot as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. I’ve spun a small amount of Rush in my time but never 2112. I thought it was ok but not extraordinary. It has potential to grow on me after a couple of listens, but at first spin it comes in as a 3/5.
weirdly right wing
Really enjoyed this one but maybe just not quite enough to give it a 4. 3.5
average
good album, really engaging, i enjoyed
Not my cup of tea
Everyone knows that these guys are precise and technically masterful musicians, but I'm not sure the music itself benefits much from that. Much of the time I feel like I'm listening to store brand Zeppelin.
Not bad, I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Good album
it was fine in a Rush kind of way. I get why people love the drums from Rush so much because they were really the standout instrument talent-wise. No idea why the first song was 20 minutes and the others were 3-4 minutes because it made the album feel unbalanced.
I liked it. I’ve never really been a Rush fan, but also haven’t given them proper attention. This wasn’t bad.
