Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Pretty cool record. Didn't set me alight after multiple playthroughs, but A Passage to Bangkok totally slams.
-hell yea this was awesome to listen to… perfect dadcore music honestly. It’s one of the more enjoyable prog rock albums I’ve listened to all the way through (maybe even better than Close to the Edge) -still maybe a little harder to get through at some parts though, and his voice is an acquired taste… all in all ended up liking it more than I thought I would though -Favorites are 2112 (The Temples of Syrinx) and A Passage to Bangkok
It was pretty decent. The super long tracks were a little frustrating, but still happy I listened.
# Playlist Track - A Passage to Bangkok # Notes - A cool album, but one that only works for the true prog fans. The craft and mastery on it is very obvious and shows without the arrogance and overcomplication that tends to be in 20-min prog tracks, which is really remarkable. - For the non-fans out there, I'd say start your Rush journey somewhere else.
Doesn’t impressa me much tbh. I thought I’d like this a lot, I feel like I should love Rush, but honestly felt this was quite stale and bland. The track about Bangkok was good. 2.8/5
Good but not great
Not exactly my favourite era of Rush. I'm more of an 80s Rush fan. But this was pretty good. 3.5
First track is an absolute journey and this is an interesting side of Rush. I don't think it stacks up to Moving Pictures, but a fun listen with a lot of good tracks
This brings back memories of waking up hung over and smelling like smoke after a night of watching my boyfriend and his friends play D & D while drinking Black Label and listening to 2112. Nowadays it’s white wine, Netflix, and not 2112.
Their sound is very recognisable. I hate this guy's voice but if you can tolerate it this is a genuinely good album. Stand-out: Tears
3,5 eigenlijk
An alright prog-rock album, but I've heard better 20+ minute tracks
Lmao, no. This is way too cheesy. Is it supposed to be a sci-fi rock opera? Okay, the second half moves away from that and is better. “Tears” is pretty good and the music itself isn’t bad throughout the album, but the corny lyrics of that 20-minute opening track mean it’s not rating higher than a 3.
Good.
ok opening just ok rest of album
Liked the prog rock vibes but honestly got a little bored.
It's Rush, it was fine, but all tends to blend together to me. Nothing really stood out as outstanding.
On paper I expected to love this album but it didn't quite land for me.
Great track flow
one track being good is typically a bad sign for an album but when that one song is half your albums run time, its different. first track is def a must hear, you can skip the rest
I just don't like Rush that much. A lot of this felt like a chore. As always their musicianship is very appreciated, but this album doesn't contain any of my favorite songs from them. Nothing on the album is bad, per se, there's just nothing I would choose to listen to outside of this project.
Okay,
I liked the music and enjoyed the back story / what the album was going for.
Great opening on this, as well as most Rush albums. Some of the lyrics are a bit silly, but overall a solid album.
One thing I've learned in this project is that while I can draw a straight line from Rush to a lot of bands that I really like, I just don't really like Rush.
1st song was nuts
What's the deal with a 20 minute long song... It was nice anyways. Not anything wow about it for me
Not as tedious as you would imagine going into a 20 minute prog rock epic. Production is great and doubtless good musicians but I don't think it comes together to something satisfyingly cohesive 3*
Over half of the album is a sci-fi odyssey that you could not pay me to care about.
Rush isn't my favorite band on the planet but by god they are good at what they attempt to acomplish.
Good. Very nice
a decent enough prog album. for me, the highlight was clearly the 2112 suite, but for me that was a little bit hit or miss. some "movements" were kind of corny and others were pretty cool. the rest of the album didn't really leave much of an impression on me. as always, with rush, the musicianship is really great and geddy lee's voice is as iconic as ever. but overall, an album that didn't really move me one way or the other.
I have never listened to this album before. Certainly have listened to plenty of Rush...but usually just their greatest hits. I enjoyed this one...but it didn't blow me away.
I know I’m supposed to love this album, but I am just not there.
not my vine. I liked the basslines anyway.
I kind of cant stand rush. I understand that they are influential and have a place in the halls of rock, but man they just go on and on and it bores the shit out of me. This is an OK album, but ugh. 3/5
This album has some cool moments, with guitars and drums that drive the energy. Sometimes it feels a little too over the top, like it's trying too hard to be epic. It’s impressive in parts, but it doesn’t always hit home emotionally.
Fine. Nothing on here grabbed me. I’m aware of Rush, I know people that love Rush, I’ve enjoyed their pinball machine, but I never got into them. Is this album more significant and enjoyable to people that are already devoted fans of the band?
This was alright. Never really been into Rush, but I won’t be mad when they inevitably come up again.
Favorite: 2112: Overture Least Favorite: Lessons
Favorite Track: Something For Nothing
Starting out with a 20 minute song is a bold move but it moved in and out of different sections well and functioned more as cohesive intertwined songs. Overall. Not Rush's best work but still a solid album.
Cool, prog rock foundation - kinda all one long song
I love Rush, but this CD isn't the #1 (or #2 or #3) example I'd pick of what makes Rush Rush. To modern ears, possibly the most distinctive thing on here is the Chinese music theme on "Passage to Bangkok" - if they'd tried to release this in 2024, the collective internet universe would probably disown them and they'd get heckled in public. For a CD where the opening track is a 20-minute overture, this is sonically much closer to middle-of-the-fairway 70s arena rock than to what Rush later evolved into. You can hear bits and pieces of "Moving Pictures" era Rush, but you can also hear a shitload of Mountain and Nazareth. Rush is better at it - they're loaded with talent and very tight, and I actually really like Geddy Lee's voice (not the majority opinion). But it's still a very unsubtle style without the lush production and intricacy of some of their other CDs. Still a fine 70s rock CD.
A lot of super cool moments and steady riffs. Pretty cool stuff but not interesting enough to me for it’s runtime.
Entertaining record. Rush is Rush, but this one was pretty nice to listen to. Engaging and upbeat, it kept my attention throughout with how energetic it was.
Alllll the skills obviously, but I just don’t get pumped on this album, no matter how good the drums and guitar are. It’s good background house rock, but I wouldn’t choose it to vibe to. Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: probably Favourite Song:
Some really interesting songs which seem to be novels in their own right. I take a while to connect with music that doesn't personally apply to my life, but these are quite masterfully crafted.
I wrote a longer review for this but must have forgotten to save it. Weird ass album. I enjoyed the instrumentals, the guitars and drums were great - but the fucking vocals just sounded like a Robert Plant ripoff. Secondly, what the fuck was with the oriental riff in the Bangkok song? What the fuck? I'd give this a 4 if it wasn't for the shitty vocals. It's listenable though.
Not really my cup of tea. This prog/dad rock with the unoriginal and uninspiring vocals. Music was fine, some bright spots but not something I need to listen to before I die. Old heads are going to love this stuff.
Pretty good when Geddy isn't singing
Listened Before? Y Pretty solid, bringing me back to college and my Rush superfan buddy. I haven't heard this one in years. The Temples of Syrinx is a classic here and I don't mind the rest of the record although it's definitely not radio-frendly. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: The Twilight Zone
This was alright. I'm not a big Rush person but this album was interesting enough that I didn't feel like it dragged, even with the 21 minute song. But no real strong feelings.
Album was okay. Not overly familiar with Rush, but do like some of their work. This album didn’t have any real standout songs. 3/5 Might listen again
Good music but felt kinda drawn out. I enjoyed it though. Low 3.
Good but the vocals get tiring after a full listen
Didn't love it; didn't hate it.
solid 3.5, Im D with prog rock
Ahhh ha ha ha it’s Spinal Tap But by no means did I hate it
Meh

hard rock
This album is just…fine. Really enjoyed the instrumental beginnings of 2112 Overture, but gosh that song just kept going. Would consider this album good background driving music but that’s about it.
Have heard of Rush but never really listened to them, so I guess this is a good intro- a 20m sprawling prog sci-fi concept song followed by a few shorter (<=4m) ones. Bit of cringe w/ the "Oriental Riff" on "A Passage to Bangkok," and I can certainly hear why they were compared to Zeppelin (mostly the vocals). Overall ok, although it didn't have any of the songs I'd heard of before. Will have to check those out separately I guess.
I mean, for prog rock it's fine!
Rush is like almost good. But I don't like his voice. Or the lyrics. Or that one asian riff in bangkok seriously it always makes me think of the asian cat in aristocats who plays that its pretty cringe
Pink Floyd goes Metal 🤘🏻 Hvilken forskel distortion gør.
Two of my favorite bands of all time are prog rock bands (Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree). There is almost no one I have listened to more than those two, but if I never heard Rush again, I wouldn't be disappointed. Most prog rock is meh. I don't know how to express it, but it feels too white -- and I'm a white guy. Most prog rock is lacking something, and Rush is no different. It's like if you gave Barry Manilow a hard edge and then told him to write ten minute songs with great drumming and bass. Too white. Another good example would be Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen. Both have amazing technical skills, on par with Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield, but Steve and Yngwie are lacking something. Rush is like that too. It doesn't matter that Geddy Lee and Neil Peart are great musicians if the music is lacking. One of my friends who is a big Rush fan also thinks Creed is great rock. That proves my point. White boy music that is ultimately lacking. 3 stars.
Was not feeling it
Perhaps I’m coming around to them yet. Still don’t love Geddy’s voice a lot of the time, but I can deal with these instrumentals and production. 3.5/5
2112, the song which takes up side 1, is representative of the best of Spın̈al Tap's early work. Despite 2-3 solid songs, closer to 2 than to 4 for me.
Well, I can remember my older brother having this album way back when, so there were a lot of familiar sounds.
We recently listened to Geddy Lee's "My Effin' Life" so I have a deepened respect for Rush as musicians. Prog rock is not my cup of tea though. I liked the first 20 minute track and Something for Nothing.
Love Geddy and the boys, but this one was a bit disjointed...was on the fence between 2 and 3 but gave them the benefit of the doubt.
6/10 Thanks for coming in. Music is not an endurance test fellas. You get paid the same either way. Don't you have hobbies or families to go home to. I don't want to discourage your hard work but I guarantee no one would hold it against you if you wanted to, you know, take a nap. 6-24-2024
Not my favorite Rush album
It is just ok...
Groovy
Had heard of Rush before but never listened previously. Daunting 20-minute opener which was a bit discombobulated and not particularly 'epic' as you'd expect it to be. The rest of the tracks were decent, with Zeppelinesque vocals and some good solos.
I've enjoyed some Rush in the past, but this isn't doing anything for me.
Anytime I hear Rush I think of the character from the Goldbergs that was obsessed with them, his love and obsession for the band make me laugh. His obsession and the general love around the band confuse me slightly. I mean don't get me wrong its not bad...but its not life changing. I read one review of the band and it said they are known for their wide vocabulary and are credited with teaching people new words. Bravo on that I suppose...the 20+ minute song was good, but also could have been broken down into multiple songs and likely done the same thing. I don't know maybe Johnny Atkins just set the bar for this band too high for me to truly appreciate their greatness. For now its a 3....
Rush just doesn’t give me a rush but this was fine for what it was. Didn’t love it, didn’t dislike it.
#248. As a concept album, the actual concept is hard to grasp. There's definitely some good bits, to be sure, but on the whole it's just a bit weird. 3/5: good, but I couldn't tell you why
It's interesting to read about the albums reception at release, I'm aware of Rush but hadn't heard of this, and I think I'll be remembering this as just "the other Rush album on the list". I can hear the band is solid, I'm not a fan of the vocals, but the main barrier for me is the song writing, perhaps that becomes clearer with repeat listens.
Kind of silly to have a 20 minute song that's just a combination of like 5 different songs. But all things considered this was a good album. Not a huge Rush fan (mostly due to the vocals) but this wasn't awful. 6/10 (3/5)
I can get behind the idea that each of these guys individually are masters of their instruments, but on the whole this is just a bit much for me. A little too hard, a little too prog, and a 20 minute opening number. I was a filler-inner on an open ticket to see them live once though and I was happy to have done that. Overall fine.
It was okay
Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it
The music is good, but I hate the singing. Favorite song: 2112
I appreciate the creativity of this album, but it wasn't my favorite.
Compared to other Rush records I've listened to, the vocals on this were somewhat grating. Ended up being a pretty middling album.
Itselle a passage to Bang-cock oli tullut tutuksi Billy Talentin versiosta ja enpä aikaisemmin tiennyt coveriksi. Muutaman kerran pyöräytti helposti läpi ja neutraali fiilis jäi.
When you make the opening track a 7-part futuristic rock opera that spans the 20-minutes of side-1, you are making a statement. This prog-rock classic a masterpiece, though I have to admin this is best left to headphones and lava lamps in the basement rather than active passive listening at work or the gym. Obviously, the tittle track is a complex and masterfully artistic rock concerto. But (Rush fans please don’t judge) I prefer Something for Nothing as it keeps the same amazing musical range but in 1/6th the time. It’s a great album when you’re in the mood. How often that happens is a personal preference.
Wasn't my style, but entertaining enough! I thought the 20 minute song was varied enough to justify the length (although why not split it into multiple tracks?).
Love Geddy and the boys, but this one is a bit disjointed...on the fence between 2 and 3 but will give them the benefit of the doubt.
Never really liked Rush much, but have heard of this album, and after listening to it, my feelings haven't changed. Part of the opening 20+minute was pretty good towards the end, but the rest of the album was much as I expected. I don't like Geddy Lee's voice, and the music seems light - similar to some Police music with the drums. That being said, both Rush and Police drummers are just magnificent drummers. I like Geddy Lee - he is an incredibly interesting person too, which I found out years ago when listening to him discussing baseball and other stuff during an interview. And I appreciate their immense talent. So 2.75 stars rounded up.
Just sounds like Pink Floyd followers Rating: 3.0
Well its rush. The musicianship is amazing. There's not much to criticize. I've just never loved Rush
Rush has some crazy extreme fans, but I've never been one. However, I greatly respect their talent. Neil Peart arguably the best ever at his craft. This album was a landmark for them and deemed "progressive" at the time of its release. Rush is a genre all it's own, while it alienates some...they have a sound all their own the devout seem to love. Who uses the word syrinx ever?
2112, the song which takes up side 1, is representative of the best of Spın̈al Tap's early work. Despite 2-3 solid songs, closer to 2 than to 4 for me.
I just don't like rush
Experimental, almost 4
Really thought I'd hate this... was actually alright
3.5 Well its a pretty influential album, and people that like rush, really like rush. Their musicianship is off the charts but they kinda lose me when they have songs on how trees talk to other trees... I liked something for nothing, i don't think I have heard that before.
Hadnt really ever listened to Rush before, but obv there are tons of Rush fans out there. I enjoyed the music overall and this album. Not overly interested in hearing more, but I enjoyed Rush more than I was expecting to.
Strange hearing this album again for the first time in 40 years. I was a big fan back in the day but I'm not sure "2112" has aged that well. Side one is a tad pretentious but with some good rocking nevertheless; side two is not terribly memorable, Ayn Randisms aside.
I've listened to this one many times over the years. It's fine, but it just doesn't really grab me.
As prog-rock-Rush as it gets.
He’s a very whiny singer but he controls it well. The rest of them have mastered their instruments. It fits in well with the genre like KISS and Black Sabbath. If anything they’re a little pretentious with their song titles.
I don’t love it but I don’t hate it . Prob a 2.5
I just don’t get Rush. I by no means think they are bad. The 20 minute opening track that’s actually 4 or 5 separate songs. Some were decent, some not so much. I really disliked Tears. I just don’t get it. Props to those that do. Slapadabass
My uncle loves Rush. I just learned a lot about my uncle.
Ok Rush album, much prefer Moving Pictures, but the opening song was indeed epic. 3/5
3.5
Ok.
Old Rush
Short and sweet album but left me wanting a little more.
Nice musicianship and tone, but I don’t like the singers voice
Notable track: 2112: Overture / The Temples Of Syrinx / Discovery / Presentation / Oracle / Soliloquy / Grand Finale
The title track was the whole album for me. Perfect in itself. Not all of it is great, but as a whole it's a great prog epic. The rest of the album was mostly unmemorable to me. I almost liked Something For Nothing though.
I weirdly enjoyed this. Big, sprawling ridiculous stadium rock has it's place in the world and Rush seems to do this well.
It was okay, not my favorite but not bad
It's one of those albums that I appreciate a lot musically because it's a really great album, but for some reason it doesn't resonate with me at all, and it's not something I'd listen to again soon. It's really hard to rate such albums, I guess it's something like a 3.5.
Helemaal niet verkeerd opzich
3 stars for being unique and cool/interesting. I’m curious to know where the album came from conceptually. Also, was it just me or did the last part of the first song sound a lot like don’t get fooled again by the Who?
I listened to this album over a two hour drive and didn’t look to see what the song titles were, but I did look to see how much of the first track was left. This album had some great guitar solos and instrumental sections. But it seemed like every other song the lead singers vocals would almost ruin the song. I still really enjoyed it and it made for great road trip music.
I like Rush and I'm not as bothered by Geddy Lee's voice, or by their hokey scifi lyrics. That said, the songs on this album don't hook me as much as other albums.
Felt like someone took the arena rock of AC/DC or better hair metal bands, and blended it with the falsetto cockiness of Axl Rose. It might help I didn't really catch the Libertarian lyrics? While the cheese is strong with this one (the Oriental flourish on 'Passage to Bangkok' is especially bad), I think if I'd been exposed to this as an eight year old, I would have been a fan.
Rush are undoubtedly legends of prog rock. I'm no expert in the genre but from what I know, this album doesn't feel like it represents the best of the band, or an early landmark in the style. It's maybe a breakthrough for Rush themselves, as they're previous works weren't very successful. It's definitely good, just maybe not the best example of the genre out there.
I knew this album since high school. I loved Passage to Bangkok, the rest of the album was a snooze fest. My opinion was not changed, good music nonetheless
buen álbum
Helt fin!
Sure shot is sure a great opener. This album is so great!! I don’t think I’ve ever listened to this entire album and it is just gold. This album is fantastic from start to finish
This is their second best album after moving pictures
It was cool. A good follow up to Pink Floyd. But I didn’t love it enough to make sure I finished it.
Bien. Tampoco me parece excepcional.
Not a huge rush fan, but this was pretty good considering it didn’t have any of the songs I knew.
I wanted to love this so bad!I listen to a lot of progressive metal, and Rush is the godfather of the sound. It started off well then it just kind of petered out. It's a decent 70s rock album, but it's not very proggy, to be honest, and it's no better than the Led Zeppelin album from yesterday. So, a sad 3 stars.
Gutes Konzeptalbum, aber halt Rock. Fast 4 Sterne.
This was an entertaining album. Instrumentally all 3 members are top class. Vocally I’ve never been a massive fan of Geddy’s voice, but this album was a bit more listenable as he had a more Robert Plant approach to melody which I much prefer. But the thing with Rush and prog in general is while being a fun listening experience, I never feel the need to rush (lol) back to listen again. Great experience with no stand out songs because it’s basically a demonstration of great musicality as oppose to songs to put on repeat. Nothing but respect for the band but as far as an album goes I can’t give it a much higher rating due to lack of a need to listen again
Rush are hit or miss form me. I can see why a certain group love them and as a drummer I should too. But this could make no sense but it doesnt stand out to me so much. I imagine it would in 1976 but I would rather put on an Iron Maiden album then this one. I have no idea why you would make that first song all 1 instead of 7 normal ones. It feels like they made an ep, chucked it on the first half but forgot to change them to individual tracks then needed to make it a bit longer to be an LP. Although I do like the second half it would've been better to do a similar thing throughout. Also what is up with old songs and fade outs. Was it that hard to finish a song, let alone not have a fade out at the end of the album? I gave it 7/10 but to be harsh it will be 3/5 on here. Stand Out Songs: The Twilight Zone Lessons Something For Nothing
Revenge of the nerds
ok
Actual Libertarian propaganda. Sounds good though.
Interesting album, never heard before. When looking at the cover art I thought I was going to get something synth related, but that is probably just because I've been listening to lots of Synthwave lately. The music itself was not too shabby. The first song had some quite good and interesting parts, but I've come to the conclusion that I really am not a fan of long songs like that. I think my favourite song is probably 'A Passage To Bangkok' which has a really sick opening riff. After going through the whole album you can definitely see where Iron Maiden got their inspiration from as well. Seeing that Rush formed in '68, they must really have been ahead of the curve back then as I don't think this type of music existed then. Overall really cool album that I'm glad I heard, very strong 3!
The first Rush album that mattered. Doesn’t quite hit like their other stuff, but a good start.
East to listen to. Never really have listened to Rush other than the hits on the radio. This is pretty much what I thought they would sound like.
Rush just doesn't speak to me. I don't know what it is. I just don't get it. I can hear that they are epically talented, but I just don't enjoy listening to 95% of their music.
Canadian Prog Rock! Pretty distinctive really, thanks to Lee’s cat-fight howling in the night vocals. Talented for sure, but definitely wasn’t my thing.
after 15 minutes i thought i was already 5 tracks in but then discovered i was still stuck on the first track
Ok in parts, but wasn't my favourite listen.
Good album, never been into Rush but they are growing on me.
Prog-rock being prog-rock. Didn’t mind it, but didn’t have a sense of direction
A rock ballad starting it off then more traditional songs. It was enjoyable and worth a listen but I don't think it's something I'll go back to.
Musically it's really quite nice; the vocals prevent a higher rating than 3 stars.
Great musicianship but doesn't really have the hooks necessary to click with me. The opening song (7 songs and instrumentals arranged across one track) has a weak story and the parts don't particularly distinguish themselves. The one-off numbers of the second half, mostly classic blues rock material, are a bit more fun. Aside from the terrible and cringy 'A Passage to Bangkok'.
Awesome guitar and drums but I'm not a huge fan of Neil Pert's voice.
Verrassend!
Okay old school rock album. Annoying voice but good musicianship.
First Rush album I've ever listened to. I do enjoy a bit of prog but maybe not this prog? Also didn't help that I listened on crappy headphones at the library, while studying. 3.5 - would probably listen again to see if I like it.
First song was epic. Was listening in the car on full blast. solid album. Rush drums always rip cmon
Prog-tastic. Like much prog it has the disadvantage of running for approximately 47 years. Other than that, it's dandy.
Proggy Prog Prog Jr. Progadoo
Awesome vocals and instrumentals. The lyrics however, were not great. They were too silly to be profound, but too serious to be campy. The album was fun, but was just ok.
I can see why these guys are treated as the Progfathers and it struck me how early this album seems in comparison to the well-studied acolytes I later heard and were enthralled by in my youth (i.e. Dream Theater). 2112 is well into Rush's recording career, and in 1976 was only 5 years after Led Zeppelin IV. Still seems like a band I would like more if I'd discovered them as a teenager. Doesn't have the wider pop and rock appeal of a Zeppelin but all the same intrigue, grandiosity - and ultimately, nerdiness - of Plant and Page's cinematism. Geddy Lee has an absolutely stunning vocal range, and Lifeson demonstrates pretty cutting-edge chops in a pre-Halen world. Won't be mad if Moving Pictures comes up somewhere else on the list, though.
Ramblings on Rush's 2112...I'm going to do what the album does here which is have a super long start without a strong enough through-line as to why the initial elements are strung together rather than made distinct. I had a cousin who was a huge Rush fan, later he became a massive Radiohead fan. Are the two connected? Possibly! But I don't feel like this is the album to stake that claim on. What a swerve, but then we're called back again maybe with a hint of a motif but not strong enough. So now I ask: What if 2112 was broken down into its constituent parts on a streaming service? Would we see The Temples of Syrinx vastly outstrip the other movements in this piece? If they weren't intertwined would this record feel less like a prog album? Would Rush have had to edit down some of the weaker aspects in writing these "movements" to make stronger songs out of them? Do people really dig all of 2112? I think A passage to Bangkok and Something for Nothing along with (but to a lesser extent) The Twilight Zone are solid enough that if paired with some better version of the piece 2112 I suspect this record would be even more well received (by me at least, lol). And now like 2112 does I'll end with some shorter statements, or at least one (which you can probably guess). 2112 meanders too much for my tastes, and despite some very strong elements a 20 minute opus as opener was not a successful gambit by RUSH despite my love of Geddy Lee and Neil Pert's playing.
Brilliant. Absolut hörenswert.
Solid classic rock album with the opening track being a banger
why is the first song 20 minutes!!!!!
They play technically well, but most of the songs do not hit. Giving them 3 stars for the first track, which is at leat a cool idea.
Some good prog rocking.
Prog rock lost its appeal for me by the early 70s. I'd never heard much Rush, and am not a fan of Geddy's voice. Great playing, though, by all three.
Heys’ favorite band. I prefer punk.
Duplicate
Was never a big Rush fan, it was OK
Rush is not my favorite other than the most popular songs
The 20 minute intro is good, reminds me of King Crimson older prog rock. The second half songs are all pretty fun.
Not big on Rush or prog rock Album was fine
favorite: the twilight zone
I mean I loved the sound and the moood on the first 20 minute song . I think with more listens I could appreciate the sound more. Highlight was "Tears".
The long opening track was good, couldn't say much else for the rest. My Spotify put on a random shuffle once the album was finished and I didn't realise until about 15 minutes in. It's fun prog rock but not something that I would add to my collection.
meh, I do like Rush but this wasn't mind blowing.
B- 2112 3 A Passage to Bangkok 3 The Twilight Zone 3 Lessons 3 Tears 3 Something for Nothing 3 This was good Rush, real good.
Cool atmosphere created by rush here but I don’t think I would listen to any of these songs again.
I SO much wanted to get into rush, but never could. This album can't change that. As prog rock of the 70s goes, this is par for the course, but not terribly exciting. I also just can't get used to Geddy Lee's singing voice. I gues I just have to move on. 3/5
A decent listen but not something I’d go back to
Concept albums should be more cohesive than this. Outside of the "2112 Overture" the album didn't do a good job of keeping a theme and feeling like a singular piece of art. I don't normally enjoy prog rock, as I think it can all start to blend together and I start to zone out at times. Rush has the advantage of excellent rhythm section and startlingly unique vocals from Geddy Lee to keep my attention, but the vision could have been executed much better.
Techno shrug
An enjoyable but somewhat average 1970s rock album. I actually enjoyed the second side of the album a lot more than the 20 minute opener/first side which seems to be more popular.
2112 // 3-3.5/5
As epic as they claim to be. Too bad I got an irrational hatred to that kind of voice.
I will listen again.
-bold move starting off with a fantasy/space opera -2nd half is pretty standard 70's rock, prog rock (barely) -standard Rush sound -one or two good songs, but nothing outstanding
Great prog rock album. I like other Rush albums better than this, but this shows their more accessible experimental stuff. (Is a 20 minute song accessible? You tell me (the answer's no)).
6.5/10
i liked the conciseness and story aspect. wasn't too crazy about the 20+ minute song & my mind meshed all the songs together. top 3: twilight zone, something out of nothing, 2112.
I've been on the edge of rush most of my life. I'm a huge Tool fan and I like all the navel gazing. But none of these dings grab me like some of their other songs. There's no Tom Sawyer here. It's good, not great.
moving pictures is way better
Known Before: No Standouts: No 6.0
It's a Rush album. Can't say it's bad. Also, can't say i overly enjoy it
Very good prog rock but nothing transcendental
Sounds like a mixture of Led Zepplin, the Smith's and Metallica.
Not very engaging but nicely played, easy listening
lange song chli ungordnet aber d rock teil cool, babylon chli orientalism (said, 1978) time. tears chli ass. something for nothing no cools solo. allgemein findi sini stimm zimli geil aber sie wird mit de ziit bitz nervig. musikalisch hends eig kei melodie oder hooks wo eim bliibed, drum nöd miis. WHERE ARE THE HOOKS??
Not Rush’s best. The opener is ambitious and mainly keeps interest throughout its 20 minutes but does have a couple of passages that lead nowhere. Passage to Bangkok is not good, but fortunately the rest of the second half is stronger, with The Twilight Zone and Something for Nothing being particular highlights
fun good!
Cool. The opening medley is a little much (is there any particular reason all the sections couldn’t have just been songs?) but I think it’s neat. Good instrumentation. Liked the dorky fantasy lyrics, not so much the libertarian stuff. Best song: 2112 Medley
Soso
The title track was very cool, but I'm not the biggest sci-fi prog rock fan. I liked a few tracks on the back half of the album as well. Something for Nothing was the most reminiscent of other Rush tracks that I've heard.
Interesting album
I honestly had to come back and edit this. I gave it a 5. and it's just not a 5. I got distracted by the band name and the cover art on a day I couldn't listen. It was a 5 when I was getting into music. It's a 3 now.
I can appreciate the ingenuity and musicianship but just not for me. Too long and uninteresting
Proper Rock!
That is rush can appreciate a good ballad I guess
Pretty good, although Moving Pictures is their best work :)
Not bad, first glance on the Rush
Pretty ok
7/10 decent maar gewoon classic rock
a space monstrosity
Feels very old school.. not the kind of music i really listen to. One song is 20 mins long!!! But was a good new type of album to listen to..
Songs too long. Not a fan of lyrics
What can I say? Overindulgent mid-70s prog rock where pushing song lengths was a sign of creative wankery. But it's pretty much middle of the road alright and parts of it have a *very* good vibe like "The Temples of Syrinx" section of the overarching 2112 suite and "The Twilight Zone" in the second half would be great after popping an edible.
3,5
Well good grief, I really did like this more than I thought was possible. My ex is mildly obsessed and whenever I would hear a bit I hated it. I might be biased though. Parts of this were enjoyable and none was unbearable. I would honestly give this 3.5 if that was a thing. Shocker
Fine, I guess? Not really my style but I wasn’t annoyed by it either. Didn’t love the title track, but I did like “Tears”. Solid 3
Already familiar with this one, and I already love rush. An easy one to digest. Best Track: 2112
3 stars, because I don't actively enjoy it despite its quality definitely a slow start; starts cranking after a minute & a half actively enjoyed parts of one song, but the pacing of the whole thing throws me off
Highlights: all of Side A Overall: 7/10
This is a classic Rush album. Great guitar and vocals. Song one is twenty minutes long! There are some good production parts, like whispering lyrics on left channel while regular singing on right channel. Probably would not listen again. 3/5
didn't like the 20 min intro, but respected it. also didn't like the asian chopsticks intro to the second song. good album though.
1st song is follows the theme well throughout the song, has a futuristic feel but it needs more distinction between who is talking since the singer is playing all characters in the song and it too seamless sometimes. There is no need for a 20 minute song seriously who tf would listen to it? The lyrics on Something for nothing are very well written and are motivational while also giving you a reality check. The riffs are fine to great the rest of the album is vastly different to the 1st track and is more accessible and cohesive. Not too memorable but has some things to that will entertain you and make you think. Especially the 5 songs other than the 1st.
God stemning
title track lives up to the hype, the rest is cool but not as good
Haven’t listened to this in years. Interesting concept and musically impressive but I find the screechy voice irritating.
Not for me
2112: Thought was decent, nothing that I found incredible or overly interesting. Some tracks sounded very generic. Many of the tracks lacked any diversity and meshed into a broing, long, arduous track. A Passage to Bangkok: The orriental riff was annoying and corny. Halted any enjoyment I would have found in this already mediocre song. The Twilight Zone: First track on the album so far that stood out and sounded good. Spacial audio made the track even better. So far, a solid track. Lessons: Found the song alright, wasn't anything I found to special. Not too much about to say about this song. Tears: Stood out greatly from the rest of the album so far. Was a good listen. Something for Nothing: Ended the album in mediocraty.... In conclusion, not an album everyone needs to hear before they die.
The first song is 4 stars, passage to Bangkok is 2 and the rest is 3.
I think the first song is the best bit of the album passage to bangkok definitely a lowlight
That's certainly some 70's rock
I think it’s slay if you are a rock music girlie. like i appreciate it but it’s not my kind of music
I had honestly never listened to this. First song was epic. Great drumming, bass, and classic Geddy Lee falsetto. A lot of mixed 70s rock sounds aside from that that don't date well in my opinion. I can see why this was super influential, but probably not an album I'll play on repeat.
It’s ight
The first song at 20 mins long should have been cut down into a few tracks. Other than that I kind of enjoyed this one, wasn't too bad.
Great sci fi rock album, absent only of hooks.
Our second from Rush, and nowhere near as electric as Moving Pictures. The opener is a pretty cool odyssey track that really picks up steam toward the end. "Passage to Bangkok" made me cringe with the "Chinese" theme that was repeated in there. I don't know man, I like Rush but this was just alright. I liked two out of six songs, which isn't bad, but I really don't think we needed this as a second album from them. They probably have some better ones. Favorite tracks: 2112, Lessons. Album art: Definitely a cool one, what seems to be stars as a backdrop for a pentagram floating on black water in the foreground. Font is strong too, this one's really solid. 3/5
For sure not my favorite Rush material. I really didn’t love the first side. Some of the riffs were cool but i don’t love the one long song concept here. Side 2 was better but again, nobodies favorite Rush material. Idk, I don’t understand why this album has the reputation it does
This is really the quintessential Rush album for me because it equal parts showcases what there is to like about their sound and what gets kind of annoying about their sound. The sweeping epic opening title suite that makes up almost half the album is a perfect example, with dazzling instrumentals that vary in the amounts of interest they generate. The lyrics feel weird and don’t really do the job of tying together an interesting narrative, and then if you’re like me you’ll read up on the album and find Neil Peart credits his lyrical inspiration “to the genius of Ayn Rand” and check out completely. The back half of the album is better than I remember, with multiple solid album cuts (particularly Lessons and Something For Nothing) making a solid impression. Overall though, very hit and miss record. The central piece itself is very half-and-half, really trailing off and turning into a slog after the excellent Overture and Temples Of Syrinx sections. For me personally, an album to skip around on and not to consume in its entirety.
This album is so ambitious and really enjoyable. It could easily be a pile of crap with how ambitious it is. The first track is 20 odd mins, it's great. I dont really know what else to say. I'm between a 3 and a 4. Will resist
classic Rush, indistinguishable from their others
3+
The 20-minute track is surprisingly the standout here.
The only dip in quality on this album is the opening of side B, “Passage to Bangkok”. Please, for the love of Buddha’s butthole, stop trying to make songs sound Asian! It’s cringey and stupid. Other than that, this is an excellent concept album. Side A is a masterpiece Rush only equals with “Cygnus” (all parts combined). For anyone who’s been living on Mars and doesn’t know what this album is about, I’ll give an overview: in the future, you’re not allowed to be creative or think for yourself. Such individualism is a crime, punished under the authoritarian control of the priests of Syrinx. There is no music in this dystopian setting (similar to themes expressed in Zappa’s Joe’s Garage). One day a man finds an artifact from another time and place, and he discovers through experimentation that this device can make music. It’s a guitar, something unknown to the people of the future. This device helps the man express himself, his creativity, and his individuality. The priests seize and destroy the guitar and banish the man, and the man, disillusioned and unable to go on without music, kills himself.
2112 good, lessons good, Twilight zone good. Meh to the others
It's like drinking Led Zeppelin light, had some interesting stuff but not enough to go back to.
Not my thing
Another one of these where I go on about the medium influencing the message. The opening track is 20 minutes long, this may seem silly in our contemporary Spotify streaming world, but for the original vinyl release, it was the entire Side A, which makes sense for telling a prog-rock concept story - however unfriendly for radio airplay. Overall, it's a bit slow and meandering, glad I listened, doubt I'd revisit. 2.5
This was decent, I listened all the way through a few times and was hoping to like it more. Rush is one of those early prog bands that I really only know the hits and have wanted to get more into their catalog. I'll probably still do that, but I don't know how often I'll come back to this.
Fun album. I'd listened before, and I like it but I'm not super taken with it. I'd listen to it again, but if I didn't, I wouldn't be too upset. 3.49/5
Its not bad. I kinda enjoyed it. But it's not really my cup of tea. Geddy lee's vocals don't do much for me.
A surprisingly unrepresentative genre so good to hear some rock. Quite listenable so 3*
Hard to rate. I did enjoy it quite a bit but it is also overblown and a bit much. It is the only Rush album I own though which must mean something... a high 3.
I liked this album format in that the entire first side is a single song with a spacey, futuristic, vibe. Ultimately though, this just sounded like Rush to me. Which is not an inherently bad thing, but I expected more than I felt the band was able to deliver.
I really like the feel-change in track 1 around the 3:30 mark. There's a distinct lack of ideas like that in a lot of rock music these days, where it is easier to write songs that stick to one tempo, one meter, and one rhythmic feel. Rush always do things like this well. Love the infamous panning drum tom fills. Geddy Lee's voice sounds great on this record. That's usually my gripe with Rush but he has an edge on this record that I appreciate more than his more common vocal sound. It's not his usual super clean and pristine one. I think I liked this more than the usual Rush stuff, but I've actually never really liked Rush that much. I always felt like their music was technically interesting and had it's moments but it's really really geared towards musicians who can nerd out about things like time signatures. Geddy Lee's voice is always towards the top of the list for me of "most grating voices in rock" and I was really glad that this one wasn't his usual vocal style / production style because that's always been a turn off for me with the band.
This 1st track feels like a bit of a love letter to Led Zepplin but if they only had interesting and cool drumming/groove 2% of the time... Actually maybe I would extend this to a few other tracks. I think the album is still fine but it's not quite as exciting as Rush's super proggy stuff, but also it's, like, just fine rock music. Which I think is a bit of a shame. Something for nothing is a great track though! If I could add a .5 I would for this track alone
Rush proves that it's more than a poor man's Led Zeppelin (though there's plenty of Led Zep influence on side 2) with a drift into prog territory. The band shows great musicianship but don't really have the hooks necessary to connect with me. The opening rock opera (7 songs and instrumentals arranged across one track) has a weak story and the parts don't particularly distinguish themselves. The one-off numbers of the second half, mostly classic blues rock material, are a bit more fun. Perhaps this album might grow on me given a few more listens.
Rush is rushing through this album but still fun
Highlights: Temples of Syrinx, Something for Nothing Leave Em's: A 20 minute "medley" to start the album, Lessons Overall Thoughts: Really don't like the format of the album which begins with a twenty minute medley and only like one song from said medley. The theme of a futuristic galactic sound is cool and it allowed to vary their sound to make songs sound just different enough.
Epic opener and some okay tracks on the second side
I owned this one as a youth and loved the 20 min title track. I'm less fond now. The lyrics are ropey sci-fi guff and the tracks on the 2nd side feel mostly weak. (Though i like Something for Nothing) 3 for kindness.
Another good oldie!
-Didn't write BL- AL: a very solid album, I felt every track after the first could not recreate the level of musicianship and theatricality seen on the twenty minute epic however it was still a very good listen. FT: "2112" (Discovery & Soliloquy specifically) 3/5
In the past I've been so so on Rush. Geddy Lee's voice never did it for me. But maybe my tastes are changing or maybe I just needed to listen this album. IDK but it was pretty solid.
Not my favourite type of music. This is a solid album though
It was good, it just was so dense of an album (as hard prog tends to be) that I couldn't fully click with it in the day that I was given. I'm sure that with time and more listens I will come around more on it, but I can say at least the technical beats are all there, it sounds fantastic, and it executes on its vision very well. Obviously the highlight is the overture, but the rest isn't too shabby either. Will be revisiting to give it the attention this deserves in the future, but off my initial impressions its a 3 star outing.
Solid rock music.
Good heavy prog rock album. Definitely didn't stand out for what it is and considering the time it came out in but it is a solid early album from a band that was still developing their style at the time. Vocals also started getting really annoying around 5 minutes in
I found this a much more interesting album than the previous one. Still not really my thing, but I greatly enjoyed the title track.
Having this be back to back against Moving Pictures has not helped this album because it's not as good. I'm not usually fan of stupidly long songs however there is something really enjoyable about the 20min 2112 Overture track. Highlights: 2112 Overture Lessons A Passage To Bangkok
This has some cool moments, but overall is not my brand of prog ... although the instrumental parts are very well done I found the lyrical delivery derivative of other 70s rock band like the Who and Pink Floyd. And the whole concept underlying this concept album (Ayn Rand) is not my cup of tea. Not terrible, but not something I'd listen to again.
There were moments that I really liked, but there was enough ‘meh’ that it evens out to three.
Some songs I liked, others I did not.
