Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Wait, what?!? The album was only 39 minutes…it felt so much longer. I have never had any interest in listening to a Rush album, and this album has not changed that at all. I mean, it didn’t make me want to vomit or anything, but it also did not appeal to me in the least.
Best 2112: Overture / ........ Worst: Tears 3.5/5
Love Rush, but this album always seemed slightly overrated. I like the medley, but could pass on the rest of the album. 3.5/5
I didn't really give Rush a fair shake until the movie I Love You, Man and I am not ashamed to admit that. They are fun! Not SUPER my taste but there's lots to appreciate. Neil was insane, Geddy is utterly unique.
I thought this would be a drag but pretty interesting. It’s not something I’d likely seek out again but I can see why people like it. Would give it a 3.5 but rounding down for Geddy Lee’s voice.
Not as bad as I thought it would be.
Not too bad….
Eh it was fine.
Just some classic prog rock. Very very interesting. I do love the fact one song takes up just under half of this albums runtime
A bit prog, a bit Who, a bit Zep. But Canadian. Rush are very highly rated as musicians by people whose opinions I respect, but they just don't do much for me. I don't really appreciate the subjects being sung about or the lack of emotional connection in the music.
This is NOT Adele's 21 played forwards, then in reverse. It's some other thing.
Sembra voler essere epic rock, ma con un tono più dimesso.
gött med få låtar men så var den första låten 20 minuter vilket jag har svårt för. i övrigt gött sound. inte lyssnat så mycket på rush tidigarel
Avaruusseikkailu! Ei paskempi. Täytyy kuunnella uudestaan tarkemmin mutta pääpiirteissään toimi! 3/5
Tää oli paljon parempi kuin luulin. Yllättävän maltillista progea.
Interesting to listen to as a cultural artefact, but really it's all a bit silly?
glad i listened, and i do appreciate rush. probably wont revisit.
3.5/5. Good. I found this easy to listen to, and I enjoyed it.
Putting the thought of Ayn Rand to a 20 minute song cycle is a step in the wrong direction. It’s a good thing the music is good. However, this album is bloated despite its 40 minute runtime. 2112 comes off very preachy and I don’t believe that Neil Peart was a great philosophical mind. The musicianship is excellent of course but that’s not enough to rescue this album from its worst impulses.
Liked it better than I thought I would.
Pretty middle-of-the-road prog-ish rock. The first track is a bit meandering but still cool. The drumming is awesome as is to be expected. Pretty good overall.
“Attention all planets on the solar federation…. The first song is so epic . Love the futuristic sci fi concept of finding an ancient electric guitar -so ridiculous. I actually wish the second half of the album stuck to theme for a full on concept album.. Super cheesy prog rock but super fun. The second half of the album was less interesting to me. I was very into 70’s prog rock in high school but didn’t like rush back then. I hope we get some of the classic Yes or King Krimson albums to balance out this list a bit. 3.5
I like the concept and it was fun listening to once, but I wasn’t really excited about the music and probably wouldn’t listen again. This would be a great musical
I had this album as a kid so know it well. Whether I think it is good or not is dressed up a little bit in nostalgia. I mean, I was 9 years old - what did I know of Ayn Rand? Ok so it's bonkers, and over the top but it's a prog metal album.
Goes on a bit. Don't really like the lyrical stylings of the lead singer.
This was a 3.5 and I might have been feeling generous and rounded up but then I listened to Metallica which was better so it suffered by comparison. Tenacious D did NOT do this one better. Enjoyable and objectively solid musicianship. Loses points because (a) not really my kind of vocals and (b) no song should ever be 20 minutes even if I enjoyed listening to it in the car.
There’s a lot of snappy pizzazz to Rush. They are so technically gifted and tight. Rush is like someone who can juggle a soccer ball 1000 times in a row. It’s impressive as hell, but they missed the point that the point of soccer is to score goals and stop the opponent from scoring.
This was fine. I'm not very crazy about Rush, except for the drums, which aren't as profound in this album. Probably won't return to this often. Also, I hate that so many of the songs were compiled into 1 medley. I'd rather be able to choose between the different tracks that make a majority of the album. Favorite track - A passage to Bankok Least favorite track - Lessons
Groovy, but I can see why people hate on rush so much. Probably won't come back to this, but I wasn't ever hoping it would be "over already" like I have with other albums.
Fine, not a huge fan of prog rock and singing about Satan and weed isn't as edgy as it used to be.
3.75/5 The beginning of the Overture excited me a lot, but then it took a big nose dive for the weirdness, the screechy guitar sounding voices and kind one noteness. I really nerded out about the sci-fi premise but it didn't really deliver...
Side two is a little bit generic hard rock. The "Chinese" riff in A Passage to Bangkok is breathtakingly stupid. Pretty good overall thoug.
Ahhh - the good old days when it was the norm to have tracks that lasted over 20 minutes 😂 A good album by rush, the guitar riffs would be perfect for driving along a beach at sunset. For me though, listening to this at work, most tracks ended up sounding similar and there was nothing that really jumped out at me for a repeat listen. I liked it - but know considerably better albums of a similar genre.
First song is a bit of an epic journey. Rest is meh and samey for me, imo nothing unique compared to everything else coming out at that period. Drummer is a monster though!
Good album, I'd listen to it again. Didn't like the 20 minute long song.
Rrogressive rock in the edge of metal. Great single track of 20 min, it does a great job immersing the listener into the world portrayed by the artists.
Rush's early stuff just doesn't do it for me as much as their middle-career stuff.
It takes a while to become immune to Geddy Lee's voice. I'm not there yet.
Some really good songs on here but going w a three star because the title tracks 20 minute length dominates and confuses the entirety of the album
2112 is the fourth album by Canadian rock band Rush. It was the band's breakthrough album in the US, becoming their second best-selling album, and renewing public interest in Rush's music. This progressive rock album is award winning, certified 3 times platinum in the US, and kept the band from giving up their musical goals and disbanding. Side one of this album is a 20 minute futuristic science fiction rock opera about a city on a planet where creativity is illegal and priests serving computers are the leaders of a galaxy-wide federation of planets engaged in a war - including this planet. The priests created the laws to keep citizens in control and instead focused on the galaxy-wide war. An unknown hero finds an old guitar, re-discovering music on this planet, but the priests destroy the guitar since it's "a waste of time" and the hero ends up killing himself in despair. Then some unknown entity takes control over this Solar Federation from the priests. Side two is made up of individual songs that display the band's traditional hard rock sound. It's a lighter tone with different styles, but some of this side's concepts do contain ideas about side one's rock opera 2112. This interesting album was a trip to listen to, and I'm glad I did. Side one flew by for me, and side two was actually just as good.
Fairly good classic rock with some jazzy aspects to it. Every member plays incredibly well on the album, but I'm still left feeling unexcited. I personally don't think Rush plays with much feeling, even if they are technically very talented. I wasn't quite checking my watch or anything, but I would probably change the station. Very meh. 3/5
I got introduced to Rush by a coworker of mine in 2003. I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock, because my parents listened to a lot of it during my early childhood. But since my parents didn't listen to Rush, I was never exposed to them. After discovering them, I really liked them, and immediately bought a greatest hits album from them. Over the next couple of years, I even obtained vinyl copies of Moving Pictures and Hemispheres, and in 2007, I saw Rush live. I say all of this, because this was my first time listening to a Rush album from start to finish, and well, I was really underwhelmed buy this album. Don't get me wrong, Peart, Lifeson, and Lee are all insanely talented musicians, and I think this album is a good showcase of their mastery of their instruments, but that's kind of it for me with this album. I didn't find the lyrics really great, and for a concept album, it really didn't feel all that cohesive to me.
A textbook example of hard rockin' prog, but this time the textbook was written by the example itself. Since it's so innocuous, it's easy to overlook and scoff at it's low complexity. The first side of the disc might be too long for certain tastes. However, the bite size tracks on side two are excellent samples of a more cultured hard rock approach. Credit where credit is due, but other efforts will end up being more distinctive.
It was fine. I really don’t have anything to say about this.
The opening high tech stuff sounds a little silly now but it was cool back in the day. The song goes on for a bit before the opening lyrics “and the meek shall inherit the earth”. It’s interesting that this song is where I know that line from. Nine years in Catholic school and countless Sunday masses left no memory of this line although I’m sure I heard it said by countless old farts before I heard Gary said it. Lennon was right when he said “we’re more popular than Jesus now.” and this is just Rush. I don’t remember side 2 at all. Perhaps I never had this album and just know side 1 since it’s also on their live album, All the World’s a Stage” which I definitely had on vinyl. Good memories hearing this again but my rating can’t get too lofty.
Since I was listening to prog and metal when this album was released you’d think this would be in my wheelhouse, but I’ve never been a fan. I’ve heard the first side many times and the first 5 minutes certainly catch your attention. They’re well-constructed, I just don’t like the delivery – Geddy’s screeching and the music is mechanical sounding. So, I had low expectations for my first ever listen to side 2, but once I found a way to ignore the cheesy “oriental” guitar on “Passage to Bangkok” I had a greater appreciation of that side of the album. The songs are well written and Geddy is less shrill.
It's alright. Quite theatrical and grandiose first track.
Rush was the first band I saw live, in 1978. It was a couple years after 2112 was released and I don't recall if they played any songs from this album, though to be honest I can't remember much from the concert, at least the songs they performed. They are very prog on this record (including a song that takes up all of side one...so prog!), and musically this is a dynamic, epic album, that proved to be a breakout record for the band. I was never a Rush fan (even though, I'm Canadian), I never got past Geddy's voice, but this album is more about concept and superior musicianship, I'll give it that.
I'm always confused as to why some group make 20 min songs containing 5 different songs with no particular link in between. Nice album overall
Very interesting rock album! Starts off with a very long song and that swings pretty well... Probably hard to listen to again but the experience was pretty nice. The rest of the album is forgettable... Small 3.5/5 might need a relisten
Technically it's a very good prog record. However it's mostly unexciting to me for no apparent reason. Tears is my highlight from the album.
I liked it and would listen again
First thing in the morning isn't the best time to fully appreciate 20-minute sci-fi prog medleys, but I looked up the synopsis afterwards and it's pretty wild. Side 2 is more immediately enjoyable - some decent rockers on there. I think I'm warming to Rush. There's something about their style that I like, even if the music doesn't click for me all the time. They seem like respectable chaps too.
listened to again better than i remembered but still not that interesting to me
Definitely lopsided when it comes overall feel, the absolute monster of a lead track eating up over half the album's runtime and good melodic ideas. That being said, it's still a Rush album - Geddy, Pert, and Lifeson are all respective masters of their instruments and the rhythmic/melodic play here shows that. Kudos to the band for continuing to push the experimental envelope and stepping into some unfamiliar territory here ('Tears' sounds like an early Radiohead track at points).
3.5 stars. Different layout than most albums, but this was impressive musicianship. Standout is "A Passage to Bangkok"
Similar to yesterday, this album has amazing instrumentals. Nearly impeccable in my opinion. The lead singer's voice is screechy and sounds like complete shit.
Incredible playing, solid songs, not a lot for me to really latch on too.
Alright 7/10
I can appreciate the artistry and talent in this band. Don't love it, don't hate it. Neil Peart is a legend.
This was okay but I can see why people like it.
better than expected.
A lot better than I was expecting. The guys we're hard as hell when they came out.
Alright
First time listening to Rush with some ups and downs, not bad in any way but also not really to my tastes
A bit out there but a good listen.
Songs good, but not great.
The breakup of songs threw me off. Not my favorite sound either
3.5
not another rock opera
Not a big rush fan
Prog nerdy rock
Es bien de época. Hace 35 años me gustaba. Ahora medio que me aburre. Mas allá de la calidad indiscutida de los músicos.
3.5
....and a legend is born! This is where Rush went from a plucky Canadian hard rock power trio to Arena rock stars. Not quite mega-stars yet, that wouldn't come until Moving Pictures started the ball rolling. This is where Neil Peart entered the discussions of Best Drummer on the Planet, and you get the feeling that this is Neil's album and this is no where more in evidence then on the opening track, the 20 minute opus 2112. Complete with over the top lyrical themes of space and futuristic totalitarian society, drum fills that could power a small city and a drum kit big enough to block ou the sun. All of this to the delight of arena-going 15 year old rock fans the world over. I loved this album and the concert that accompanied its release but now I find it cliched and somewhat rediculous, I actualy prefer Rush's debut album to 2112 now. Am I a Rush fan? That phase died out when I finished high school but do I respect them for being Rock mega stars without an ounce of pretension in any of them? Absolutely! So for an album that I don't really like but which launched an career that is worth celebrating...3 stars
Fantasy sci-if meets prog rock … Canadian style. 3.5/5
Typical Rush. Enjoyable.
The 20min song was song 4 songs in a row. Something for nothing is actually good. It’s was okay 5/10
Classic
It’s fine. Not great, just fine.
better than the other rush album I've heard first song is half the album
Was pretty into this album. Definitely worth checking out again
Rush is good at sounding like Rush. Track 1 doesn’t sound like Rush and it’s pretty awesome. The rest of the album is weak though.
rockafella
Start was amazing the rest was averaaage..
Not a rush fan but this was better than the songs I know.
I like Rush, but I never was a huge fan. I like some of their stuff a lot though; Tom Sawyer will always have a special place in music for me. I also feel like I really understand the lionization of Neal Peart thanks to 2112. I always heard he was one of the best rock drummers of all time, but I just never could understand what set him apart until I heard this album. The focus of this album is obviously the 2112 track, which is ambitious on a Led Zeppelin level. I do wonder how often the performed 2112. Was it a staple of their shows or was it a rare occurrence? Anyway, it kind of dwindles after the title track, but Rush is indeed a unique band with a trademark sound.
Rush's lyrics are always the best. The music itself was okay but didn't pull me in like the songs on some of their other albums, namely Permanent Waves, A Farewell to Kings, and even Caress of Steel. Geddy Lee's screeching gets old after awhile, too.
Velprodusert rock.
Sounds oddly familiar despite never before consciously choosing to listen to band much less this album.
Like fantasy novels? Like guitars? Want to be in the future from the 80's? Here is your one-way ticket to 2112. First track on the album will be your epic journey. The remainder are the little things that happen to you when you finally settle into your new wings at the spaceport of some ancient Syrian god. Good luck. God speed. And remember, you will probably find yourself with a very narrow niche of people so you better decide now if you really want to go.
Mostly harmless
I enjoyed some of it.
Enjoyed the album. Some parts were not very pleasent. There were times when the vocals were annoying but overall I enjoyed the album very much.
Quite liked the cheesy rock in this album, I wouldn’t choose to listen to it but it now makes sense of all the other slash metal/rock bands that have mimicked them.
Never been a big fan of Rush, which is a bit strange since I like a lot of prog rock. I love Yes, who I know a lot of people compare to Rush, I love ELP, Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, etc. But for me, Rush has always been a bit too mechanical. They lack heart and soul. Technically, they are incredibly talented, but it lacks feeling. Having said that, I didn't mind this, and I do appreciate their talent. 3 stars.
This is the third album I’ve been assigned that I had heard before (I’m keeping track for my own sake). I had listened to this as part of my pre-pandemic mission of listening to classic rock albums I was unfamiliar with. I think I enjoyed this a bit more today, compared to the first time I heard it. It’s hard to deny Rush’s talent. I don’t think I’d listen to it on my own but I enjoyed listening again today.
Not as good as i'd like it to be
Ayn Rand was once acceptable in polite Canadian society. That, and/or there are a lot of Boomer Bros north of the border...
A instrumentally strong album that really strives in the prog rock/rock opera category. The album is pretty short and most of it is the 20 minute song which if you’re a fan of rush is probably great to hear. I found the album a bit lacking. 5.7/10
Forgettable but I do thank them the 38 minutes of not bad music
Nice
The most prog of anything ever to happen. Good though, just dense and lyrically impenetrable. It seems to tell some sort of story, but without doing any background reading it is hard to tell what it is about.
It's an okay album. I'm bad at reviews. It sounds like a mixture between Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin. Not bad, but not extraordinary.
I like prog rock bands God is Neil Peart on the drums Ignore the lyrics
I love a bit of wiggy nonsense, so this was good fun. The song 2112 itself is not too interminable as it goes through different parts, but perhaps lacks a bit of cohesion, and doesn't absolutely soar for me like prog can. There were a couple on side two that I really liked, and overall I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say there is anything on here that shows how good Rush can really be like Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of Radio.
not a favorite. I liked the second half more than the first.
She really has a 20 min song huh
Is not for me.
Putting this in the "I respect it but I don't enjoy it" category. The story of this album is interesting, that they were struggling financially from waning ticket sales, and their label almost dropped them, but they decided to stay the course and continue to go in their own non-traditionally-commercial direction. Even with that knowledge though, I found listening to this album tedious.
"Jesus" is what I uttered when I saw the first track of 20:33 runtime. It's prog time for sure. I mean, I can respect the concept but execution it isn't doing much for me. I am admittedly not a huge fan of his voice but it can work in songs like Tom Sawyer, but here not so much. From Wiki it sounds like their label was wanting them to make more accessible/consumable music but they doubled down with their Side A being this single 20 minute track. I can respect that for sure, regardless of my enjoyment of it. The rest of the songs on side 2 are... fine. Instrumentally they are all talented, but this sort of prog just always feels like it's technical for the sake of technicality. It never feels relatable for me, but to each their own.
20 min song, really?
Monumental album for Rush, not my favorite from them. 3.5/5
I did really like this album, especially the 'A' side. The re-mastering seems to have diminished it a lot.
Very short, and very prog. I liked the "A" side.
The title track is wild but
It’s fine
Interesting. Short.
Not a great album but a fun album - I would go back to it. I mean who doesn’t like to start an album with a 20 min song? Am I right?
This album was alright. I liked the slower songs better. A bit too grating on some songs, the high pitched voice gets tiresome.
ITS RUSH. SLAP DA BASS. I do really like Rush. This doesn't have any of my favorites, but still good stuff.
Interesting through out. Liked it a lot.
We’ve taken care of everything Turned prog rock into hard rock The songs we sing Haven't really heard of them But they're OK
was expecting a drumming masterclass from Neil Peart that didn't materialise
20 min song was wild
This is barmy in the best of all ways. I have complained about overlong tracks, and this opens with a 2112, a 20+ minute song suite... Which I actually enjoy. The plot is something about some evil priests trying to stop music and a revolution which is hackneyed and silly but it just works. The interplay of the instruments and the size of the thing is very impressive. The fact that no one idea ever outstays it's welcome is incredible. Though it's worth noting that the story was apparently influenced by the writings of Ayn Rand - the philosopher of objectivism, a lazy philosophy for people who want half arsed justification for dodging tax and hating brown people. The other side of the album is a bit more trad heavy rock, and isn't as excitingly crazed. Nothing on there offended me, but equally it didn't aim for the stars and come surprisingly close to reaching them.
Heard this so many times, but still becoming familiar with it. 3/5. Very close to being a 4/5.
Vibin
Rocks, they have better albums
2112 as a song suffers from a lot of classic prog issues, like god awful lyrics and a cheesy concept, but is instrumentally wonderful. The other side of the album is kind of boring aside from Passage to Bangkok and Tears.
Surprisingly interesting, considering how much I have heard that Rush is all talent, no substance. I would say it was enjoyable, but I do get why people wouldn't want to listen on repeat. (read: Geddy's Voice)
meh, not really my thing but hi hat <3
I wish this wasn't my introduction to Rush. I really want to like them. On paper, I should be into them. This album dragged a tiny bit for me. It was pleasant and interesting enough, but this just didn't click for me? A high 3, but not yet a 4.
Not my favorite work by Rush (who I generally really like). I can understand why it was influential and bought them a lot of creative freedom but I wasn't really interested in the songs. Honestly I do like concept albums and long-form songs but I've always thought the actual topics of Rush's material here is pretty boring. Heresy?
I have listened to this record a handful of times. I enjoyed it more than ever this time. But Rush is still a little nerdy for me. I think I feel the same way about Rush that people feel about Genesis. If I love Genesis, I should also love Rush, probably.
Rush is cool. Great musicians, real "powerful" songs. I'm not a huge fan of the rock opera genre - but it's hard to listen to Rush and not enjoy it.
2112 gets a 3.5/5 from me. Perhaps it'll grow on me, but it's just not for me right now. I can get why it's so critically acclaimed; the musicianship is amazing, and Neil Peart definitely does deserve to be in contention for the greatest rock drummer of all time. But I'm not a huge fan of the singing, and that sort of brings it down.
Cool space trip. Wish the captain didn't yell so much. Will I take it again? Unlikely.
I was really enjoying with the first song. It threw you into an excited mood with little way to escape; however, it sort of just drags on due to its length and how many times it switches moods. It could've just been split up into 4 or 5 songs. The B-Side of this album doesn't really get too much better, but the last song keeps that excited mood from the beginning. Favorite track: Something for Nothing
Another of many examples on this list of an album where I can appreciate the talent, but it's not for me.
Grote inspiratie geweest voor veel grote bands, bijvoorbeeld Rage against.. Coole sound, trek het stemgeluid van de vocalist wat minder na een aantal nummers.
Nice short bit of guitar worship Bit too Led Zeppelin for my taste - I can appreciate it even if I've never been a big fan of this vibe Fav track: The Twilight Zone
A little too long and chaotic for me, but I definitely have more respect for them now.
It's ok, I like what it's going for from a sci fi perspective and telling a story. Nothing memorable to me however.
Classic Rush sound. Not much in the way of recognizable songs, though.
Rush has some balls, kicking off their rock album with a 20 minute track. I can barely summon the courage to listen to most 7 minute songs, much less 20. But this whole album kept me listening! I'm not a big Rush fan, and I knew more about why people didn't like them before I'd ever heard any of their songs, but this is a very listenable album. Didn't love that last track, though. Felt phoned in.
It reminded me of AC/DC and Greta van Fleet
It was okay, definitely didn't hate it. Not sure why they made the first song 20 minutes. Some decent riffs, couldn't understand half the lyrics though.
its a decent album, only thing is on spotify, the first load of songs are combined, so its 20 minutes long,
Great fun. Styx meets the camp side of Led Zep. Big, camp, hairy, banging. Would have got a 4 if it were less prog
Ничего примечательного, но иногда проскакивают интересные мелодии
Not Rush's finest effort, but it really leans into their prog rock sensibilities. The sheer scope of the lyrics and talent of the musicians make this a worthwhile listen.
1re face = un opéra rock inspiré d'Ayn Rand ! Pas aussi affreux que ça en a l'air, ça déménage, et sacrée guitare. La face B est plus convenue, de belles ballades notamment. Mais un son vraiment distinctif quand même.
Was a decent enough album. Very 80s "Epic tale" kind of stuff. Didn't grasp me totally, but I liked it none the less and may look into more Rush stuff. Favourite song was Passage to Bancock.
More prog than I was expecting. Relatively accessible although Geddy Lee's singing at the start is higher and more affected than in later years.
No great songs, wish the first song was broken up rather than one big one
Killer 24-minute EP, saggy and bottom-heavy full-length album
Most excellent dude.
An incredibly influential band and it seems like this was their breakthrough album. I liked it but probs not something I'd revisit. 7/10
Een soort rock met een ruimtevaart tint. Het is prima maar spreekt mij niet heel erg aan
First tune was a long one. They clearly know what they're doing. Pretty enjoyable on the whole. Davor Suker.
An enjoyable listen.
Well this is unique at least. 20 minute Sci fi rock opera as the opening track, then 5 fairly mediocre prog songs after. A bit self indulgent but I didn't dislike it
Love Rush, but 2112 might not make my top 3 of their albums.
While I appreciate greatly the musicianship and it being a well produced album, as well as their influence on many musicians after them, the lyrics are a bit immature and the go and stop nature of the 20 minute composition was a bit of a turn off. Only the song Tears appealed to me. This extreme form of progressive rock is not my cup of tea. But it’s not a bad album by any means
Rock suave. Un poco aburrido.
Surprisingly fun
Solid
hehe da bekommt man was für sein geld - 3
In general, I dig Rush, though I don't seek them out (maybe I should). I like their sound and their precise phrasing and musicality. Getty Lee, after a while, gets to me, though, so listening to this whole album got to be a bit much.
Great rock, some classics like Passage to Bangkok. 3.5
S’okay mostly gave 3 stars because it’s rush. Thought this album was brilliant when I thought Closer to the Heart was a part of this album.
I like Rush... I don't think 2112 is the finest representation. Its side A concept piece is Rush at their silliest and most heavy-handed, and the B side is patchy and uncohesive.
Not my cup of tea, but I appreciated it more than I'd expected. I danced to the guitar solo while walking down my hallway.
'What are we going to do? Are we going to try to make another mini-Led Zeppelin record or are we going to do what we are going to do and continue forward and whatever happens, happens?' Well, what happened? Es wurde ein Album geschaffen, das arg an Led Zeppelin erinnert. Die Band lapidar als Led Zep-Klon zu bezeichnen, wird der auf dieser Platte gezeigten Kreativität nicht wirklich gerecht. Gefiel mir. Gute 3 Sterne.
It’s not great but it’s Rush...
Good but this isn’t even their best stuff 3.3
Definitely the first time I have listened to a Rush album. I wouldn't consider it to be an album I "needed" to hear, but it was pretty cool. I don't know much about the band, but this seems like it is a relatively early album just before they made it big, or I guess the turning point that contributed to them making it big. The sound is BIG, and heavy. There is a drama to the trio's chemistry. I struggle to appreciate the shrill voice, but maybe it will click. I appreciate the proggy long jams that they apparently composed on many of their albums. Perhaps if I'm in a very specific mood I will explore more of their stuff. I could see them putting on a hell of live show. This is my blurb for Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: Fun, beautiful, loud. From the opening song which modernized Buddy Holly for the 1990's, the album is a slacker daydream that doesn't try to be anything except exactly what it is. It's a shame I didn't listen to them sooner, because I could see my windows-down drives being soundtracked by Malkmus and his gang.
Lekker om een album te beginnen met een medley. Fijne muzikale compositie en mastering, doet een beetje pink floyd achtig aan. Vocal zijn opvallend en passen er goed bij.
Interesting concept I guess, wish tbe album continued the theme
This is an album I've heard a few times, and to be fair it's pretty good, they can play fuuuucken well, and I know most of my mates (plus all my favourite bands) list it as a classic... but eh? Other bands did the prog end better, led Zeppelin did the led Zeppelin end better. Plus I think by the time I first heard it I was already so sick of the style I just didn't care. 3/5
I’m realizing by doing this challenge that most of these metal/hair metal/prog bands were actually just theater kids. And that’s beautiful! I just would rather they did theater.
This is what happens when a group of men can play instruments really technically well, but don't have the ability to write a good song.
Some cool ideas but it would have appealed to me more with different vocals/lyrics (there is an air of 70's nerdiness here) and some of the guitar tones/solos weren't working for me. I can see why they inspired so many bands.
Notable Textzeile: Waiting for the winds of change to sweep the clouds away Waiting for the rainbow's end to cast its gold your way Countless ways you pass the days Zweites Album der Band für mich in dieser Liste.
Da hör ich lieber Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
4/10 purely because of the musician ship and not out of appreciation of the songs. I thought the singer and drummer were very good, but the songs didn’t interest me enough to give a second listen. I liked the second song in the opening track named 2112 it was a bit slower and more my style but unfortunately it’s trapped between sections I’m not too interested in listening to again.
4/10 = was not particularly a huge fan of the screechy singing style but when he packed it in and sang a little better i liked that, enjoyed the drumming a lot though pretty impressive, overall was not majorly wowed
two stars for the song tears also come on a twenty minute song is way to much
There's no reason for the first song to be 20 minutes long I was a bit disappointed. Rush has a reputation, I feel, and I didn't get it in this album. It was fine, but unimpressive.
I expected to like this more than I did. Rush's early albums are like a Super-Hero origin story. The three of them, collectively, discover they have this awesome power, but it takes them, like, 6 albums of training montage to learn how to command and control it. By 2112 they've mastered their technical prowess. But the music still sputters and spurts kind of spastically; it still seems to come from calculated intention rather than by emotional inspiration. And the only tune that comes close to their melodious glory is the chorus of A Passage to Bangkok; which is an odd track in several other ways. So I'm surprised that this is identified as their first great album. My theory is that in a few short years they were clearly making magic that millions of people were soaking up. And those people looked back over their catalogue and saw the image from this album cover. It was just so damned cool, it had to be a great album. It certainly made for great posters and t-shirts. (On another note, yesterday I had Tarkus, and today I get this; so I've had my fill of 20+ minute prog rock suites for, oh, a decade or more.)
By far the most unique album listened to so far. I vibed with it just not as much as others
I didn't know it at all, but I liked it
instrumental jerk off sesh
Not my favorite
Wasn’t horrible, not my favorite either
No standouts
i listened to like 4 minutes of the first track and that is an accomplishment because why and how is anyone listening to one song for 20 minutes? anyways i like rock when it's progressive but i can't stand that constant high pitched singing. i liked the riffs and solos. i like the album in general but it didn't leave that much impression tbh.
I knew there must be some reason I'd never been in a hurry to listen to Rush. Technically impressive, but just not for me. Very Canadian: Enormously expansive, but very empty.
Not moving pictures, still alright, a rush album
Look man... I can appreciate the craft, but I can't say I enjoyed this as much as I wanted to. I've always known Rush as this sort of glam/operatic rock band; sometimes that genre hits, sometimes it doesn't. I certainly wouldn't call it prog rock. For me when rock crosses into this territory it becomes more 'cringe' and annoying than good rock. I'm personally more interested in very melodic and classical sounds. It's hard to describe why I don't like it, maybe it's because it was my first listen. Either way, it's the sort of thing I would avoid, even as a rock fan. Happy to have listened once, but maybe never again.
seeing that this was only 6 songs: :) realizing the first was 20 minutes long: :(
4.5
יותר 1.5
Quite boring.
I don’t love their lead singer’s voice, not really my thing outside the few of their songs I already know and like
Not for me. Didn’t like how long the first track was and the rest of the songs didn’t really grab me
2nd Rush album, and all it tells me is that I don't really like Rush. It's just quite middling - no memorable melodies like Floyd, not really heavy enough for my tastes, no real memorable riffs. It just all feels a bit thin, and the 'oriental' riff in A Passage To Bangkok really made me roll my eyes. Scrapes a 2 because I can at least see why others like it, but one Rush album would be enough.
RATING: 4.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: Something for Nothing LOWLIGHT: A Passage for Bangkok
Kjedelig
Rush are the most talented band I just cannot stand listening to.
they're all good, dynamic players but good god dude. you just cannot be serious with these vocals and lyrics
Just not a Rush fan and this album again solidified that.
I am reminded of my review of Moving Pictures: This Does Not Rock, despite having tones that should rock. Rush guys need a swirlie. They remain good at their instruments who write dumb music that does not have the redemption of rocking. I really think if they were a cover band they could do some great stuff, but instead they do this.
Ayn Rand can suck it
ja man lass ganzes album in einen song packen das kommt bestimmt krass. auch leider nicht wirklich gut
Day 4 - 2112 by Rush Not the album we needed for a chilled Sunday at home… made it through the first 20 minute song. Great guitar but not the vibe of the day… 3/10
At moments this sounds good - mainly when it's strictly instrumental, but the singing is bad and the lyrics are even worse. They sound like what a 14 year old would write while trying to sound deep.
There are many devoted Rush fans in Canada about my age. Then there’s me.
I’m not a prog rock fan, so I can’t say the 19 minute opener to this album gave me much optimism. When I read that it was inspired by an Ayn Rand story, I lost all hope. It’s some kind of dystopian story where music has been lost, and individual genius must bring it back (yes, because that’s all there is to musical production). If this imitation Led Zeppelin was what our ‘hero’ produced, I think I’d stick it out in the darkness.
I enjoyed the instrumentation, the use of Ayn Rand and Geddy Lee's vocals less so.
Album is 50 mins long, first song is 20 mins long. Make it make sense! 1/5 but they get an extra point for being Canadian
The first track is 16 mins long which boils my blood. Over all it’s ok. Some good guitar work, could be better
They really took one of Roger McGuinn's alien encounter songs, removed the 12-string guitar, and made it 20 minutes long and libertarian
First half was alright (though it didn’t really feel like one song that flowed) and the second half was rather boring for me. Tears was alright!
This is okay, nothing special, and it confirms that I'm still not a Rush fan.
I found this way, way more enjoyable than more than 95% of the hard rock-adjacent albums I’ve heard before. Over the years and decades, I’ve come to terms with this simply not being my genre at all… Urgh, the phallic, white male attitude and mostly subpar (or, simply put, garbage) lyrics. Thankfully, Rush don’t succumb to these off-putting specifica. But oddly, I have the feeling that 2112 rarely lives up to its full potential - especially in the centrepiece / opener / first-side-consuming prog rock behemoth. Often, just before the band goes all in, there are passages that meander. Also, some changes feel abrupt and disrupt the flow (around the 14:30 mark, just before the song delivers a beautiful but all-too-brief Genesis-like intermezzo, before turning back to their Led Zeppelin imitation game). The meandering and the abundance of ideas smashed together for the sake of it is something I would normally approve of, but in the case of 2112, these passages rather make me lose focus and track than feel intrigued. The second side if the record is made up of a loose collection of apparently quickly thrown-together songs; it’s certainly fun, but the songs don’t do much for me either. If I had to guess, there will be at least one other Rush record on this list. If so, I will gladly give that one a spin and see whether they managed to refine their songwriting approach.
Although I know that 2112 is one of the big dogs in the prog canon, this stuff just isn't my thing. Undoubtedly something that people should listen to just because it is so distinctive but not my bag.
I missed prodigy and got Rush instead ok then. I’ve simply so many questions, such as, why is the first song 20 minutes - over half the length of the album? also why did they use that stereotypical Chinese riff in the second song? Also why is the guys voice so high? Also
It was at least interesting I suppose
This was so boring
The opening track is a deal breaker 20 mins for what. Having said that the 5 songs are reasonable. However that voice is awful especially when we go full stretch. Not as bad as I thought going in minus the 20 minute caveat.
I do not rate it because I did not like it at all, this is not my kind of music I listen to.
Still that high pitched voice straight out of what would become the 80s standard, just earlier. The 20 minute opener says it all, it’s sometimes genuinely inspired, sometimes drifting into cliché. Great riff on Passage to Bangkok, and a few real standout moments. But overall, less rewarding on a focused listen than the previous one. Too glam rock to me, yet I kind of love the musical approach.
never really got rush.
Best Track - "The Twilight Zone"
This is my 2d Rush album and I liked the other one the list better. I enjoy the music especially the bass playing but this didnt really conmect with me.
This didn’t really work for me
Habe es schon mit mehreren Alben von denen versucht. Mag den Sound, mag besonders die Drums. Aber der Gesang geht für mich gar nicht.
It's giving long hair & flare jeans - 70s??? I can imagine some of these songs being part of the soundtrack in old action movies. Not my vibe but appreciate their talent & contribution.
Nope, not for me. They are obviously good musicians, but it just feels grandiose. I get any musician carries a bit of a people need to hear this attitude but that’s the only thing I get from this album.
F*ck, really. If people know one thing about me when it comes to music it is this—— I can’t stand Rush. Just don’t understand how people listened to this the first time and they said yes! I would like to hear more of that please. I forced myself to listen to the entire album just to make sure I hadn’t changed my mind. I can appreciate that they are good musicians….. but that is about it.
Guess I had moved on long before
t was like they were aiming for The Who's Tommy, but hit Spinal Tap's Stonehenge instead. I couldn't really understand the lyrics, so the story-line went over my head. The rest of the album was more traditional, but I find those high-pitched vocal really grating.
The sound of a band straining for something that isn’t there. Is there much more of this prog-rock to get through?
I prefer the pop music-er side of Rush to the rock cencerto side. It's good, moments of brilliance, but I kind want it to be over most of the time.
As a concept album, it sorta fell apart for me after the 5th song. As a Rush album, same criticisms as usual: not a fan of the high vocals and the proggy noodling.
Won’t be rushing to listen again
Insanely talented group of musicians, this one didn't do anything for me though. I see why it's loved but I don't think I'll be revisiting again any time soon.
Total 2
Ehhhhh
I have a soft spot for Rush fans, much like I have soft spot for Trekkies and D&D players. Doesn't mean I like the music all that much.
Wow, this one doesn't even have any actual songs on it. I guess it's useful to know where that "math rock" we've been hearing comes from, but I wasn't really all that interested.
I was waiting for the singing to start and then when it did I didn't like it.
(2.75)
this was another Meh. a much weaker album than Moving Pictures
Nose si me gusto tanto no me frene en niguna cancion como para decir guau me encanto esta
Dad rock
(44/100)
Interesting arrangements throughout this record but thats about it. A lot of rock music passes me by in a disinterested haze. This is another one to add to the pile
Sonically great - sounds amazing in the headphones - but I feel no connection to this.
I've struggled with Rush, the most dorky of prog bands, with making it stick. And this album in particular demonstrates why. "2112" is, despite its high points, a real slog at points; it feels like prog for the sake of prog instead of a deeper message and theme. Then the rest of the album is all over the place, sometimes in the riff groove and sometimes just mleh. By the end you feel like you ate a bunch of carbs and no meat to stick to it; nothing really gets left to remind you of the good stuff. Add to it that they were inspired by Ayn Rand...I dunno guys, this might be the seal on my thumbs down to Rush.
Not really my cup of tea, not that I dislike prog. I understand prog songs tend to be longer, but why on earth would you merge 7(?) songs into one track? I enjoyed some stuff of the latter part of the album, like A Passage To Bangkok. The vocals were annoying most of the time. Not really eager to check out any more of their compositions.
Im not a big rock fan so i already knew i wouldnt really like this. The songs are repetetive except for "Tears". Didnt really like any song on this album, it was just a solid generic rock album, but the guitar solos were fire, made the album shine a bit.
This is the music that Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force listens to.
It's fine. I'm not a fan of the vocals, and the instrumentals don't impress me. The feeling I get from Rush is that they want to make "high class" rock, but it ultimately ends up being kinda bland.
My wife, who used to manage a prog-rock three-piece, knows this album pretty well, but even she has not grown accustomed to the orientalist jolt that intrudes multiple times on A Passage to Bangkok. Racist? Possibly. A clanging cliché? Undoubtedly. Emblematic of the clunky storytelling throughout this very silly space opera record, not to mention the unsophisticated musical ideas. Other prog three-pieces manage a much bigger, more integrate sound. And that is the thing: there is nothing particularly progressive about this progressive rock album. They sound like teenagers playing in their garage. They write like teenagers playing Dungeons and Dragons in their garage. I've done both, so I'm not claiming higher moral ground. But imagine if, like Rush, I'd let the fantasy-reading drummer and Dungeon Master (same person) of my teenage bands write the lyrics. Maybe I should have. I miss Liam. 2 To give credit to Rush, I think there is always an ineluctable likeability to their work. There is an earnestness, endearing without being pompous, about the expressive power of rock music. The naive, guitar-discovering character in the title track is a creation of the heart - a story that Geddy Lee is telling about himself, his sincere beliefs, and the monsters of the industry that are holding him, and rock music itself, back from saving the world. Rush are pants though. However elegant a bass player, Geddy Lee writes a poor melody, and writing may not even be the right word. Much of the time his top line twists itself to fit the (dreadful) lyrics in what feels like ad hoc melody - instinctive decoration on the chord that leaves nothing memorable in its wake. The exception to that account is Tears, which is the best thing here in my opinion, where there is some sense of equanimity between the melody and the other parts. On the whole though these are clumsy songs in every way; sows ears attended to by men whose belief in the redemptive power of the silk purse can only carry the listener so far. 1.5/5
Nice compositions Somewhat masturbatory Stick to the space stuff
Got halfway through 2112 before the ole truck's bluetooth conked out and never recovered, but I must confess I preferred how it sounded on there over the perfect clarity of overhead headphones. Rush seems like it needs the right time and place and it might go hard. Otherwise it's solidly not my kind of prog rock. My mom had such a grudge caused by Rush overexposure from my uncle and a highschool bf that most of this band was largely absent from my life until recently. I appreciate the variety, yet I come out with the double sensation of feeling like I just listened to the same background chords for half an hour. The Twilight Zone is pretty funny in concept but I wish it was a little sillier. Final verdict remains just not my kinda sound.
i've never been able to get into rush. intricate instrumentation and prog-y structures just aren't necessarily my bag, and the style doesn't grab me.
This would be more interesting if I were into this types of genre but I can tell there is talent in here.
It’s just hard for me to listen to his voice.
I think 2112 is for die-hard Rush fans
Geddy Lee's voice is a huge barrier preventing me from liking Rush but it isn't the only thing. This album didn't do anything to win me over.
Sounds like a 70s rock album
2112 is not a date in the future … it’s the damn run time of the first song. Good Lord of Canada! Put down that guitar and slowly step away from the synth and no one needs to get hurt. Let’s try this another way: The word Prog spelled backwards is G-O-R-P. GORP |noun| (North American Informal)- a mixture of nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate used for energy while hiking; trail mix. The term was popularized in the 1970s. (New Oxford English Dictionary). Coincidence? I think not. Prog Rock is a collection of randomly assembled goodies which, although perfectly fine on their own, become an overwhelming mess when thrown together. The function of GORP is purely strategic, designed for sustainable energy, not built for taste or enjoyment. This, too, is true of Prog Rock. While the pieces of instrumentation are supposed to somehow fit together nicely here, in a tasteful melange, they don’t - they battle and drone on, with extended solos and unwelcome reprises in the name of intricacy. This album is a great example of death by a thousand long, drawn-out cuts. With each little glissando run or gimmicky harmonic overtone or time change, there is another layer of artifice piled on, and it becomes so excessive that the story is all but lost in the delivery. I almost wish this was an instrumental album so I could stop trying to understand the lyrics and decipher a meaning or story from them. When my mom used to put out a bowl of GORP while entertaining, I always picked the raisins and the M&Ms out and ate those, leaving behind a big bowl of peanuts. I wish I could do the same with 2112.
Ummm to be honest I kinda zoned out while listening. It's not really my kinda vibe but it wasn't unpleasant. I don't care for the vocals very much, is someone going to beat me up for that? PROGESSIVE ROCK/DAD ROCK/SPACE ROCK OPERA(?)/20 MIN SONG
Not my favourite Rush Album.
Too sharp for me and 20 minutes for the first song only? Wtf. I mean it works if it sounds nice but this is just a mashup or something.
Rush are Jordan Schlansky’s favourite band. That in itself says a lot. The first half of the album is made up of a single twenty minute song that is as ambitious as it is ridiculous. I feel like I'm sitting through a terrible musical, some sort of camp sci-fi rock opera. And there's no interval. The second half of the album is a bit more enjoyable. At times Geddy Lee is doing a pretty decent Robert Plant impersonation. But at other times, he slips dangerously into Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden territory. There's nothing really terrible here, but it's just all a bit of nonsense. Ultimately, it’s very hard to take it seriously. Especially when someone like Jordan Schlansky does.
Not my type of prog. Has its moments, but a lot of passages are not that interesting, a bit basic. The guitar tones tend to be a bit annoying, the album overstays its welcome... I've heard Rush put out many better records.
Au début, j’ai cru que c’était écrit ASH, donc le groupe suggère quelques jours plus tôt…. Je ne comprenais pas le changement de DA.. normal ce n’est pas le même groupe M’oui
Many of my friends in high school were super into Rush but I could never get into them. Listening to this album I love the music, then Geddy Lee opens his mouth and I am out. So I'm a bit torn because I think the band is great but the vocals are nails on a chalkboard; This is unlistenable to me because of his voice. I'll give it 2 stars because I feel like they put out good music but it's really just me not liking his voice.
Nothing special here
Couldn't get into this, kinda generic
A bit hard to get into, lyrics are corny as shit "we are the guardians of the temple or Syrinx"? Sure you are buddy.
I like some of the instrumentation on this, but in a RUSH to jedgement, no.
it aint hitting
Just not what I want to listen to - better than the last rush album I got but only slightly
Felt like a late 80’s version of Pink Floyd. Very experimental
I usually like Rush but I found this one went in one ear and out the other without making much of an impact.
I went into this knowing I despise Rush, but it started off with abiut 5 minutes where I was thinking, "Ok. I get it. The drums are like a very talented Octopus with the correctly prescribed amount of energy drinks, and the bass and guitar come together nicely." And then that puke started singing and it just ruins everything. I don't always care for the guitar - the more searing tones are just an oratory punishment I've never enjoyed, but I can accept that's on me just not appreciating more metal solos - and I think I could really enjoy them if they were an instrumental band. Or if they had just about any singer who didn't sound like someone brushing a hairless cat with a cheese grater. I tried to focus on the music, and this is a good band. But it's so hard to get into a hypnotic state enjoying what underlies the songs when that screech owl keeps attacking the ambience. I exited this knowing I still despise Rush but really only one of them.
Never heard anything by Rush before so wasn't sure what to expect but after the first 4 tracks of this album, I'd had enough. It hasn't changed my overall aversion to classic rock that encouraged millions of teens to air guitar in front of mirrors, a kind of aural masturbation. The heavy metal screeching and guitar solos along with the prog rock concept album ideas all made for endless yawns, I'm afraid. Ok, they can play. They have skills but nothing really stands out apart from that.
