Reviews (page 7 of 13)

For starters, the 20 minute long "2112 Overture" is long, and feels long; although it is a very solid piece of prog rock which dominates the rest of the album. It is hard to see the rest of the album as nothing more than filler, and it is solid but forgettable "hard" rock.

Some okay tunes. “A Passage to Bangkok” lyrics are clearly about weed, but somehow the music gives some racist vibes.

Another good album by I band I should definitely be more familiar with. A bit less accessible than Moving Pictures but I enjoyed this. The 20 min opening track didn't feel that long and that's a hard thing to achieve. Might have to listen to more of the catalogue.

Makes me feel like drinking cheap beer in a garage so I can reminisce about my youth.

Me pareció bueno y todo, simplemente no me parece para 4/5. Tiene secuencias excelentes que por momento recuerdan a deep purple o zeppelin, pero no es consistente. No queda guardado pero se aprecia haberlo escuchado.

Played twice today and still it didn't stick apart from the cultural appropriation of 'A Passage To Bangkok'. Doesn't help that the opening track is 20 mins long. Brilliant drums and guitar, sci-fi like lyrics and 70s vibe.

Yeah it was fine! I don't know if I needed a 20 minute song to start the album but it's fine. It's like... good rock with some interesting elements.

joa. gut. rock wieder. ach idk langsam reichts ma.. is jetz kein wow

Ayn Randerscheinung. Not bad but I nearly can see the middle age prog rock fans with a mixture between boldness and long hairs, jeans jackets with AC/DC batches and cans with discounter beer.

I’ve harped on about nz cliches in these little posts, but there is no truer Canadian cliche than the lot of them absolutely fucking loving Rush. I say this more from a place of bafflement than judgement, as Rush’s influence seems confined to North America. I’ll give you an example. I was flying into Toronto with a Canadian colleague. As we were landing, he stopped me mid conversation and said, “sorry, I just have to do this”. He pulled out his iPod, crammed some earphones in, and put on Rush YYZ. “The beat…” he said too loudly while air drumming “… is Morse code for Toronto airport.” I willed the plane to crash then and there. I yearned to become an inferno on the frozen runway.

Not my favorite Smiths album but still decent.

3.5, la verdad me gusto más de lo que esperaba, pero no me veo escuchandolo demasiado seguido

Classic Canadian album. I prefer some of there other stuff but if your into the holy trinity it doesn’t get better.

They are from the same country as Cailou so unfortunately this has severely impacted the rating

Ah, Rush. A perfect example of a band I should really like on paper, but who end up leaving me a bit cold. The three members were clearly all highly proficient musicians, but the silly lyrics/themes and overly shrill vocals (albeit with impressive range) significantly detract from their appeal. No coincidence that ‘The Overture’ is my favourite section of ‘2112’. Nonetheless, the title track is my favourite thing about this album, working together well as a cohesive narrative even if it is a bit daft. The five tracks on side two are all decent, but none particularly stand out.

Rush Rush Rush Rush Rush, should tick all the right boxes for me, Canadian, long hair, searing heavy metal guitars, prog? Yep, but somehow, I am not so enthusiastic, this time after being berated by all the Rush fans in my life I listened to it again, really listened to it, and I liked it a lot more, I think it is not an album you can have on in the background, its cleverer and more intricate than that. Next time I get Rush I will stop what I am doing and pay attention. But for now, just three stars.

Alright but definitely drags

Relisten priority

Nothing special about it, except from a descent female singer.

Good stuff. Definitely of it's time. Rounding down though.

Rush is a Canadian national treasure, but this isn’t their best.

While I have seen parts of the epic "2112" piece live, I believe this is the first time I'd heard it in its entirety. I liked most of it, and I think the storytelling (albeit so much like Anthem that maybe Neil Peart owed more than "insipration" to Ayn Rand) is the best part of it. The second half of the album showed them starting to show off in ways that would hint as to what was to come, but all-in-all this is still pretty in line with what rock sounded like at the time. I definitely prefer what they were doing in the 80s to this, but it's cool to listen to a band teetering on the precipice of the Rush we all know.

Not bad for my first Rush album. I don't think I'd listen to the 20 minute long opener again, but it was a nice classic rock and roll sound to listen to.

A-side has a bit too much going on but I like the more laid back b-side.

sounds like rush - ok

Side 1: A cheesy grand space-opera that hits on the ethos of rock and roll in a fun and extravagant way. 4/5 Side 2: Decent. 3/5

Liked it without really caring about it. RYM: N Saved a song: N

not bad ok 3/5

Musically interesting but the fundamental problem with Rush is that these guys are not nearly as smart as they believe they are. Young men who are great musicians and have read a couple books taking themselves way too seriously.

surprisingly better than i expected. some great musical moments, but i feel like some great parts were lost in the middle of that 20 minute opening track.

I like Rush well enough, and this was ok, but nothing jumped out as a truly great listen here. Pretty forgettable and overlong, even for fantastic musicianship. 3/5

very short, but pretty cool

I really, really hope there are only two Rush albums on this list. I don’t think I can take more. They kill me. Neil Peart demands high marks but the rest leaves me cold to freezing. I am going 3 because I have to, but I never, ever want to hear Rush again. Boolean: No. Really, I think Moving Pictures is enough representation of Rush. This doesn’t show a progression of art or anything that makes me feel I needed to hear it. If I could get my time back, well I’d put in that paperwork.

Normal álbum

Expected more, to be honest. Music at times is great, problem is you have to endure everything around it to get to it. Then once the second half album with regular songs starts going, you realize the best part of the album was the first 20 minute track. Ouch.

Fuck Ayn Rand. Rhythm section is great, vocals would be significantly more annoying had this album gone on any longer. I'm not really a prog person and this proves it, but there's some definite cool ideas on here, just nothing to carry it past me listening to it for this.

the racist ass tune in A Passage To Bangkok was funny idk. An album I would just never listen to voluntarily but it wasn't that bad. 3/5

I might have liked this if I had given it a chance but it was rush so I just kinda tuned it out

track 2 is beetje sus maar voor de rest leuke basic rock

A bit on the fence with this one. I absolutely loved the 20-minutes epic - with its cheesy riffs and over-the-top kitschy scifi tropes, it feels like the musical version of Flash Gordon on acid. It's ambitious, unashamedly goofy, and kind of exhilarating in its scope. It also carries the seeds of many later musical trends - you can already hear a hint of 80s glam, a trace of Iron Maiden, and even a little bit of fantasy power metal. The other songs are mostly good too, even if they certainly don't make as strong an impression. Although I'm still not a big fan of the singer's high-pitched voice (not everyone can be Robert Plant), it works a bit better here than in Moving Pictures. On the other hand, it also feels like a transitional work. The Led Zep and King Crimson influences are strong, but the music doesn't add a lot to what these giants already built. Maybe Rush was a necessary bridge between the early 70s and the 80s, but it still feels a bit off to me, like it's neither here nor there yet. Also, Ayn Rand can go fuck herself. 6/10+

Very nostalgic

Prog rock is usually too pretentious for me. This album is easy in the ear though, except for the singers voice. It grates. Respect to Rush for sticking to their own style of music and not going the commercial route. Wish I could give this 3,5 stars.

I haven't really heard a lot of the Rush catalog, but this is a record that I have heard previously. Listening to it again, the first half of this record is really good. It's a rock opera sequence that is apparently influenced by Ayn Rand and its honestly kind of gloriously silly. It's catchy and its memorable. The bad guys get the best songs. The second half of the record is a bit more of a chore to get through. The songs are... fine I guess. I might have a better view if I was a bigger fan of the genre, but these largely feel like forgettable moody hard rock with a ballad tossed in. I'll definitely go back to the first half of this record, but probably not the second half.

I do enjoy some Prog Rock when I'm in the right mood for it, but I've never been a big Rush listener outside of hearing "Tom Sawyer" and "YYZ" out in the wild. Neither of which are on this album. What is on this album is a 20+ minute suite telling a typical dystopian story in 7 movements (only in prog...) which I enjoyed a lot, especially the driving guitar throughout. Other than that highlight, I liked every track on the album, and can recognize the skills that Lifeson, Lee, and especially Peart have with their instruments, and lyrically it seems quite rich, but Geddy Lee's singing voice does make it difficult for me to discern what the lyrics are...

Actually loved this classic rock and roll album! Loved the vocals and the drums are super cool. The second song has the asian riff ;>

Never been a big listener of Rush previously. Still not a big fan, but can see the appeal with this album

"Rush" hab ich als Begriff auf der Plattenbörse häufiger gehört... Daher waren die Erwartungen entsprechend hoch und wurden in dem Maße leider nicht erfüllt. Solides Album, aber haut mich nicht vom Hocker.

Musikalisch schon stark, aber durch die Vocals leider überhaupt nicht mein Ding.

Surprised how short the album was. I enjoyed it.

Led Zeppelin with less orcs.

Lekkere muziek maar beetje teveel all over the place voor mijn doen

FTL: Were the first song the album. 5 stars

Still haven't caught the magic yet -

Sounds like Led Zeppelin. First sing remind me of Kickapoo

Wow, not sure I really want more rush… Yeah… always hard with them. Appreciate the musicianship, even appreciate some of the daring prog/ post rock elements, but I still want it to be over. And the vocals… treble just isn’t my thing. The bubbling brook doesn’t make me want it to be over less. And if I feel this way during the 20 minute intro… well… yeah 3 stars. Cause damn can Neil Peart play the drums. Boolean rating: no. I can’t say I needed to hear this before I die.

Is this album the progenitor of prog rock or just self-indulgent wanking? Do I care? How many other bands have the confidence to make the first track on an album 20 minutes long with a babbling brook in the middle? It's interesting to hear how 70s this record sounds from a gear/tone perspective. It's like the epitome of classic rock gear played with progressive orchestration. If the music shifted back to blues roots, the sound would already be right at home.

I expected not to like this, and while it’s better than I feared, I still don’t love it. Take the opening opus, which brings to mind the Pavement lyric: “What about the voice of Geddy Lee / How did it get so high / I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy.” And that the lyrics were also supposedly influenced by Ayn Rand, oyyyyyyyyy. Like much of this album, it has some strong moments musically; the guitar and bass sound great and bring a 70s hard rock energy. But Lee’s shrill screech is hard to take, and there are all those annoyingly unrestrained Neil Peart drum runs seemingly precision-engineered to call attention to their technical virtuosity rather than giving it feeling (we get it, Neil, you were good at drumming).

Decent proggy 70s rock. Some amazing musical moment, but the vocals prevent me from loving it.

Absolute must listen with headphones. Prog rock is not something I usually listen to but enjoyed this one. 7.25/10 Top song A Passage to Bangkok

Pretty good. It was kinda crazy to see that 20 minute song but it was enjoyable. I especially like the section at the end. Overall, pretty alright. 5.6/10.

As a pretend Canadian I'm supposed to love Rush. Technical mastery for sure, not much emotional response from this guy. Some great passages but I'm missing the prog receptor in my brain, sounds too mathy.

Uninteresting theme. Uninteresting lyrics. The vocals are only somewhat more engaging than the lyrics. Good guitar work, I suppose. 2.5?

Album#3 ----------- 1) 3.5/5 2) 3.5/5 3) 2.5/5 4) 3/5 5) 3/5 6) 3.5/5 ----------- I really wish that the first song wasn't a combination of a bunch of songs because "The Temples of Syrinx " is my favorite song on the album but because it's stuck in the compilation, its rating is sort of brought down. Overall, this album is decent.

I think of Rush more as the super long songs with weird time signatures or whatever but this one really had a punch to it. Probably why it's the most well known and accessible. 6/10

Interesting listen

They're very talented, but I was kinda out of it.

They are great at their instruments but it’s not all that. Songs were no more than ok

7/10. You can feel how ambitious this is right away. It’s bold, technical, and fully committed to its concept. Not the easiest listen, but it pays off if you get into it.

it was alright, good prog rock album, made me enjoy the genre more still not better then the court of king crimson

It is a good album, though I feel like they have better work.

Do they have better albums? Sure but this is a album that deserves a little more love

This was an interesting album because I've actually known the song, "passage to Bangkok" for a very long time, maybe since middle school. I forgot who taught it to me, maybe our uncle Bruce, because I think he likes them. Listening to the whole album as an adult I was a little surprised, because it was more progressive rock than I was expecting. Their sound felt like somewhere in between Yes and LZ. I'm not particularly predisposed to enjoy the long form prog rock compositions, so they have to be done pretty well for me to appreciate them. Safe to say that Dark Side of the Moon was a little better on that front. Still, there was a lot of nice artistry and sounds on display. Passage to Bangkok is surely still the best song

The vocals and lyrical content took me out of it a little bit. Really solid instrumentalists though. I have an interesting relationship with "A Passage to Bangkok." I believe it was the first song I got on iTunes, by the recommendation of my friend Alec. So I've known it since before I could really make an opinion about it. But I hadn't heard the rest of the album until now. I guess I knew that Rush wasn't really my thing, but it was definitely worth a listen.

норм, без негатива.

(4/7) whoever sings has a little too much screech in his voice. other than the 20 minute space opera this was pretty typical fare

ottimo disco, prima traccia incredibile, 20 minuti di viaggio nel 2112 e anche travel to bangkok 10/10, le altre non sono stato attentissimo ma mi sembravano ok. buon disco!

4/14/26. Very much a grand, progressive sound. Impressed most with Geddy Lee's singing. Like Moving Pictures more, but this album is very solid.

I don’t like the pushing hard falsetto that is characteristic of Geddy Lee and Axl Rose. Made it difficult to enjoy. Good sound otherwise though!

Meh not my favourite

Rush não é muito minha vibe, mas é bom de ouvir na esteira correndo a 7.5 por 15 min, depois fica cansativo

Weird album. Neither herr nor there.

Was never into prog-rock, so Rush and others similar passed me by. That said having listened to 2112 there is no disputing the musicianship, the drumming in particular had me sitting up and taking stock. Wasn't a fan of the vocals however but that's just personal taste. Favourite track: 2112 Overture

not that great, felt like background nothing noise

This album had tremendous staying power when I was 16 and in need of some seriously different 70's rock focused music. But, in retrospect Rush would go on to have a lot better albums and songs with a bit more cohesion. By all means, I don't out of the blue 15 years later hate this album. Its iconic. The message is all too important these days, do not relinquish control of the mind, creativity, and expression to machines or to an ultimate power. Obviously the 3 part epic and title track is the key highlight. I'm always gonna love the line "its got wires that vibrate and give music" when describing the guitar. Passage to bankok is fun, CRAZY rock n roll cliché song. But the rest of the album is a big obscure. Anyway, I don't hate rush. Oh contrary. I just think my teenage years are gone and this album isn't the 5 star I used to think it was.

A solid listen. The instrumentals were pretty good.

Very fun.

Enjoyed this more than Moving Pictures. Opening number is very impressive and the guitar work is great throughout.

big journey, not bad at all!

A quintessential 3 star record

very rush

pretty fun! i have already forgotten this one though im afraid

Me gusto el álbum los sonidos te hacen sentir en algún tipo de película galáctica aunque no es el tipo de rock al que estoy acostumbrada, fue un nuevo descubrimiento.

This was quite good! Those end-of-the-world, androgynous rock vocals of the late 70s are really starting to grow on me. My favorite song was The Twilight Zone because it ruled. The whole thing was pretty sci fi in a way that ruled. I’m keeping it at 3 but it’s really a 3.5.

Alright, hate that guy's voice though

Very experimental and interesting, but generally I steer clear of Prog Rock and this is no different. Overture is the best and most musically interesting song

Pretty good

I have heard a few Rush tracks before but didnt really have a feel for them before listening to this. Kinda like a poundshop Led Zeppelin / who ? Its okay. Like a lot on this list it doesn't seem essential but 1001 is an awful big number.

Review - I've liked this album for a long time, but not listened to it critically in years. The 20 minute long title track is great, although honestly it doesn't need to be so long. And while some of the latter tracks are good, it feels a bit like a bunch of poppier songs chucked on the b side of an album that was really a showcase for the title track. It just doesn't come across particularly cohesive as an album. It's not their best album, but it's still worth a listen Rating - 7/10 Need to hear? YES

What does this album feel like? Rebellious teenage years wandering in a forest. Futuristic. - Favorite song? The Temples of Syrinx - What stood out most? The guitar solo is amazing. The voices are great. 3/5

Progressive rock. Libertarian lyrics. Three virtuosos who write mediocre songs but make them sound good (if not dorky).

Pretty solid; dug the medley. This is earlier than any RUSH I’ve heard before. I also think I heard a few things the Foos might have stolen, ha.

Super rock and roll 🤘 didn’t really blow my mind but it’s fucking awesome

i mostly know rush as a band for canadian dads. guess im finally listening to em. the first half (first track?) is solid enough. i enjoy the musical goofiness of "overture", and "oracle the dream" and "soliloquy" are pretty good (if structurally identical) metal tracks, but it's not until "grand finale" that it finally gets into the time signature changes and experimental soundscapes i associate with prog rock. a fun listen but one that gives me the impression that other prog rock acts might have set my expectations a little higher than they maybe should've been. the back half.... hmmmmm. as soon as i heard the stereotype asian riff on "a passage to bangkok" i yelled "grow the fuck up" out loud. come the fuck on dude. and "the twilight zone" seems to be literally just describing scenarios from the show. i enjoyed some of the instrumentals but it takes on a lyrical silliness that makes me think more of acts like electric six, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, except that they seem to lack the self-awareness to pull it off. its hard for me to get into. i think if they'd just released the first half as an ep i'd have ranked this higher? but they didn't. unfortunate.....

2112 the song is awesome, back half gets a little dull though

Musically sound record that's unfortunately lyrically based on Ayn Rand principles (Peart has since admitted it was a youthful phase). Docking a star.

It has its moments, but ultimately it bored me. A bit more straightforward and hard-driving than the Rush I’m familiar, which I presume is later Rush.

I just don’t get the appeal of Rush. I can’t really stand geddy lee’s voice and I know they are good musicians but it just doesn’t work for me

Is it a prog rock requirement to have a 20 minute first song?! This is my second play through of this album, and Moving Pictures came up last week which kicked ass. I am excited to give this another go. Super skilled musicians and damn cool they make such a sound as a 3-piece. The music is cool math rock, Geddy's vocals are a bit grating to me when he gets super falsetto though.

Good, old classic Prog Rock from Canada. Not there best, but still fun

17 minute song???

Enjoyed listening to this album, but not sure if I was fully my kinda music

Iconic album cover. Loved by most Rush fans and that makes me feel that you need to be a huge fan of theirs to enjoy. 3.5 stars

Decent. Intro was overdrawn but ok oversll

Men ellers OK fedt

fede numre i mellem, men også (lidt for) meget et album af sin tid

I think I’m into Rush now. This website keeps pushing them on me

Mid epic Fave track: 2112 Overture

Really not fussed about this either way. Meh. 2.5/5

Vraiment pas mon affaire le prog.

Cool prog album nothing crazy

Mostly ok

I dunno, I can’t really get into Rush. Musically, very competent but just not that interesting to me. I can’t really tell you much difference between this and the last Rush album I had - how many more??

Highlights: 2112, A Passage to Bangkok, Something For Nothing Decent. When it comes to Rush, so far I've heard only heard a few songs from Moving Pictures, so I had a bit of a different expectation coming into this. I don't understand why the side A overture isn't separated on streaming services since there are clean breaks between different parts. It's not like they melt into one giant track... The B side is more standard stuff. I liked the record but I'm not so sure how sticky the highlights will be for me... It's mostly due to my genre preferences, I'm not saying it was bad.

Rush is always a bit hit or miss with me. No denying their musical chops, but I'm not a huge fan of Geddy Lee's voice. This falls in that middle ground. Good stuff here, but nothing immediately jumped into my must listen to again list.

Irgendwie schon geil, aber Geddy Lee geht mir halt total auf'n sack. Beim Programmieren (Tunnel-Arbeit) super, aber aktiv anmachen würde ich es wahrscheinlich nicht mehr.

I have never thought of myself as a Rush fan. I am not a fan of prog rock in general. However, I listened to this and I can certainly appreciate the genius that makes up this power trio. Incredible vibe. Still not a Rush fan - yet.... but I got a better understanding of why people love them.

Good noise

I liked the clean vocals in the first song, the more rocky vocals later on didn't strike me that hard and the music became quite average sounding rock. If they kept the style from the first song, maybe I had liked it more.

Not a fan of the vocals, they're one-note, and kinda grating. Found even this relatively short album too much of the same thing. The rest of it was fine, but nothing special. Very low 3 - I'm probably not going to listen to more by Rush, but this wasn't an offensive listen.

Starting with a 20 minute song is bold. As far as long song goes this was moreso just 3 songs stuck together than a grand ballad. Reading into it and it was all a story so I'll give it a little credit. Post rock has given me high expectations of long songs sorry. The rest of the album is average hard rock. Not bad but not memorable, it didn't overstay it's welcome either. His voice is grating tho, why do hard rock artists only have one vocal style Low 3

Du rock

Sympa, mais sans plus

ehh prog rock. not personally my fave but i could see theoretically why ppl get down to this

rush is mostly hit or miss for me, 2112 has oddly always fit somewhere in the middle

Some great riffs and digging the music itself but man are some of these lyrics corny as hell. I like some Rush songs but this album falls a bit flat for me. Listening to Moving Pictures now and its much better.

I have a massive soft spot for rush, but I also have a general dislike for rock operas. Overall, I think they hit the mark here, but I honestly think that the B-side of this album leaves it feeling somewhat disjointed. I wish they'd continued with the more prog-style for the B-side, even if it was separate from the story they wanted to tell with the A-side. Still, a very solid album, it would probably be a 4/5 if it was just 2112. 3.5/5

Rush sounds so Rush

Some spectacular music and some dull moments. A typical prog record then.

I gave Moving Pictures an easy five-star review. In my write-up, I specifically said that I need to listen to more Rush. However, 2112 didn't click with me. Of course, the music is powerful and creative, as expected from Rush, and I'm not the one to be overly critical of a group getting a little corny with their progressive lyrical content. However, this one goes a little too far, and I can't help but cringe at "The Temples of Syrinx." I even tried to look up Syrinx, thinking I might have missed something significant and redeeming about the reference, but I wasn't satisfied. "A Passage to Bangkok" was downright unforgivable. The music was awesome, but the themes were too annoying. Three stars.

So this is my 2nd album by this band. I actually liked the 1st one, "Moving Pictures", well enough. I've not been back to it tho. Even tho I do like the guitars/sound, seeing the way some people hate things just kinda makes me hesitant to return to it unless I really really really liked or loved it. So, what do I think of this album? If it was only the "second half", after that 20 minute song, I'd probably give it 4 stars. I really liked those songs. However, the Ayn Rand of it all makes me have to put this at a 3 at maximum. I wish there wasn't a whole thing for her, but i guess there is. I really really liked the song Twilight Zone, and everything other than the 20 minute monstrosity was good

While this is no “Spirit Journey Formation Anniversary”—which came to Geddy Lee and Master Shake in a dream, performed in collaboration with Zakk Wylde—there’s a lot to enjoy on this album. I’m far from a Rush fan and the 20 minute overture to start the album is a bit over the top, but I found myself reasonably entertained by this. But I don’t think it passes the “would I listen to this again” test, so it’s a 3/5.

Standard rock band

(Long sigh of relief)

Enjoyable, not my kind of music

3.5/5 more my style but meh

Not my music. This is pretty pure prog rock and it's tedious. Don't care for the singing or the vibe in general. Really saved by the drumming, there is so much drumming. Arguably too much drumming, wild stuff. Why hit the drum once when you could hit it 3 times? If these guys had different interests they could have made a kick-ass metal band. Certainly influenced 80's metal, they just weren't angry enough. 3 stars, and they're all for Neil Peart. Without his drums it would be a fully disinterested 1 star album.

Ta bueno 7.9/10

Early in the project, I gave Moving Pictures a 5. That may have been an early blush of enthusiasm (though I am relistening right now and it’s quite good). But that made me surprised that this album, an alleged magnum opus, made me feel… nothing. I’m not sophisticated enough to say anything about the musicianship, which seemed solid enough. I was warned that there was a lot of Ayn Rand in there… all I noticed was some references to “Anthem,” which are harmless enough. I don’t care if your song is 20 minutes long It’s just that I could never see the point of any of it. I was ready to give it a 2 but ended up liking some of the songs on the B side well enough, especially “Tears.” But it definitely makes me intrigued about the change in their sound between the two albums. I don’t think I have a two-point spread for ANY artist so far, and this could easily have been 3 (or 2.5 if we had half-stars). I know I’ll end up with a huge spread between “Born in the USA” (2) and “Nebraska” (it will probably be 5 when it comes around). Anyway, intrigued to see if others had this same experience.

Good music just didn't peak my interest, I'm not super proficient in music knowledge but I thought it was interesting the song "A passage to Bangkok" narrarated through different countries?

Epic anthemy rock. First song is 22 minutes which is kinda insane. Good production and vocals

Could've been an EP with just track one. The multipart suite has everything I need, and then once it gets to the remainder of the album it drags.

Never really listened to Rush before to my shame. Sort of a prog rock Iron Maiden. So obviously I enjoyed it immensely

The very definition of prog. Technically really impressive work but doesn’t really do much for me emotionally. Probably would have appreciated this more when I was younger but not so much now. 3

amazing!! i like this one its also much different then my usual type of music

I'm sorry but I don't connect with Rush. I love 70s hard rock (Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Budgie, etc.). I love some 70s prog rock (Gentle Giant, King Crimson, even Yes or ELP, and of course softer Jethro Tull). I love some bands that do indeed sound like Rush (the aforementioned Budgie or event first Cirith Ungol albums). But for some reason, I cannot connect with this band to give them more than 3 stars. What can I do?

🤙🏾

It starts out promising but it mellows out toward the end. It's good prog rock but not on the level like Yes. Also the transitions between parts on the first track could've been smoother. Standouts: 2112: Overture..., A Passage to Bangkok, Tears

I was intimidated by a twenty minute opening track at first, but it was actually quite good. I liked the lyrics on the album they were decently constructed and imaginative throughout. The vocals however are very one note, and I eventually grew tired of them. If I could I might give this album three and a half stars, but I can't. Three stars. (Favorite track: 2112: Overture / The Temples Of Syrinx / Discovery / Presentation / Oracle / Soliloquy / Grand Finale.)

Man I need more of Eush in my life. This is... epic? Is that the word?

Interessant, mehr fällt mir gerade am Nachmittag nicht ein. Muss man erstmal sacken lassen, habe ich irgendwie das Gefühl

Solides Rockalbum, erinnert mich etwas an Led Zeppelin.

Prog Rock ist nicht wirklich mein Genre, dafür war das aber noch angenehm und wenig nervige Klänge

The 20-minute-long sci-fi epic first song was kind of cheesy but mostly fun and I enjoyed a lot of parts of it. I didn't care too much for anything on the second side, but didn't hate it either. If I'm ever going to become a prog fan it isn't with this album.

king gizzard and the lizard wizard but in the 70s

3,4 Highlights: 2112, Something For Nothing

I'll listen to this again to appreciate the drumming more.

Sempre bom conhecer novas bandas de rock. Gostei desse, mas não posso dizer que me cativou muito.

I like Rush. They don’t make it into my playlist often but when they do appear I find them super easy to listen to. Things just seem to flow nice.

Ook weer niet echt mijn muziek. Ik vind deze rock altijd zo theatraal dat ik het niet helemaal serieus kan nemen, maaaaar ik vond het best leuk!!!

Good parts, bad parts. The latter are mainly where they go heavy on that strumming pattern that got big in the 90s for prolonged stretches

I am sure I am missing something here. This sounds like basic "dad rock". It's not bad and I am sure with repeated listens I would find gret things here. I know Rush is all about time signature changes and complex arrangements, but at the end of the day I am here for the music and the mood, I'm not here to take a deep dive into technical ability.

I still don't love Geddy Lee's voice, which is a bit too high-pitched and screamy for me most of the time. But the instrumentals here were pretty great, and technically excellent. I enjoyed it a fair bit despite the singing. And I'm not going to knock Peart too hard for loving Ayn Rand; we all did stupid stuff when we were in our twenties :P. High three, close to four.

I w rocku mogę coś nowego usłyszeć

Interesante y mejor de lo que esperaba. Otros discos de Rush me habían aburrido. Aquí se nota un proto heavy y un falsete al que le deben mucho otros grupos que vinieron después.

I understand why Rush is a big deal. I'm just not that into their music. I like something I can sing along to.

Rush always reminds me of I Love You Man

Genuinely pissed they decide that the first track is just one track. The best part of the album is the Overture. Can't stand Geddy Lee's vocals but it's still a decent record.

Escuché el primer tema. No me gustó

As one critic on this site once said, Rush is the start of the unholy fusion of synths and technical wankery with prog and ruined the genre. I can’t judge the theory but what you should know is that there’s a period of which my favourite sci-fi book is ready player one, and 2112 played a quite important part in one segment of the book. but you know what? this is borderline intolerable. first i need to complain about geddy lee’s voice. he is like a more annoying and shrill sounding russell mael. like really androgynous and theatrical vocals but not with the good version of theatrics. also the lyrics are quite anti authoritarian in its nature but is weirdly inspired by a far right politician. like what. also it’s supposed to be nerd music due to its sci-fi themes. and as a nerd who has dabbled in sci-fi, i have some words: the wording and the plot are the most basic dystopia theme possible, the riffs are sparse and i think they can bring their hard rock influences out a bit more instead of relying on the technical wankery. overall overrated. 3/5

I’m sorry, there’s no reason that side one can’t just be seven separate tracks; doing that would have made this present like a shockingly normal rock & roll album. I don’t begrudge them their sci-fi future opera, I just think they could make a single attempt to not appeal only to nerds.

Despite starting out with a 20 minute song, it wasn’t torture to listen to. The first song seemed like several different songs rolled into one. The rest of the album was fine…and quick! Before I knew it, the album was done! Rating: 2.5/5

скучноватый, но ок

Не зацепило, но у альбома интересная история создания. Сразу не раскрывается, но что-то в нём есть

Cool riffs. Dorky lyrics.

enjoyed the last half of album, pretty rock forward but nothing special 6/10

Suprisingly not terrible!

Mediano, guitarras boas.

Fuck Ayn Rand.

Typical rush album, overwrought all over but pretty good in places.

Seems a little dated. And adolescent. Brings back memories of how jazzed I was by this album when I first heard it in 1980.

It might just be the mood i’m in today or the fact that this album has been “music bro”’d to death but while i can admit this is well-done and would probably hit me differently on another day, it’s not my favorite!

Too long but did enjoy it

the first song being the majority of the album is crazy

I wanted to bail on the first track so many times but I forced myself to listen to see where this 20 minute track was going to go. It felt like several songs strung together, and in the end still wasn’t anything I particularly appreciated. I can appreciate the talent even though this really isn’t my jam. (3)

This album consists of two distinct parts. The first is a conceptual prog-rock odyssey that is fascinating to experience. While it isn’t entirely consistent throughout, it is ambitious enough to make for a fun and engaging listen. The second part introduces some interesting ideas that are more traditional than experimental, but they never feel like they drag. Overall, it’s a solid record with some compelling history behind it. The standout tracks for me are “The Temple of Syrinx” and “The Twilight Zone.”

Excellent musicianship, especially from Neil Peart, but I didn’t like the overall sound as much as most progressive rock. The vocals are a bit too screechy at points. I massively prefer Moving Pictures and A Farewell to Kings over their more hard-rock, metal sound.

proggy old-school rock. close call between 3 and 4

Meh. I like Rush, but I don't particularly dig this album. I can't really give them less than a 3 given they're all top-notch instrumentalists, but I like the songwriting/composition on their other albums a good bit more. 3.0

Didn't drag me into the album. Probably should be listening to these more actively...

Man, even Rush is catching strays from my souring on prog rock music in recent years. Other than Pink Floyd, I would have expected Rush to be the one band to have avoided that, but unfortunately that isn't really the case. That said, this is probably the best classic prog album I've gotten on the list thus far (Aside from Pink Floyd's stuff and Jethro Tull's Aqualung). And that's because, like Pink Floyd, Rush probably had some of the better pop sensibilities of those classic prog bands (Pink Floyd also blended enough other genres like psychedelic and whatnot that they didn't sound stereotypically prog). This album however does get a little more noodly than I remember a lot of the classic Rush songs (Particularly in the title track, 2112). I expect Moving Pictures to score higher for me than this one, seeing as that album is definitely more single/pop oriented, and I'm much more familiar with it than 2112. So yeah. Best prog album I've gotten so far on the list barring Pink Floyd albums, but unfortunately I'm just allergic to prog at this time in my life.

Petite vibe Led Zep

Gonna be honest I feel like this band is a little overrated. Good, but nothing to write home about. Also kind of racist??

Ką žinau, įdomiai skambėjo.

Man, it took me years to get over Geddy Lee’s voice enough to where I could start to appreciate the brilliance of Rush’s musicianship. But, even then, I would say I have only ever really gotten into a handful of Rush songs. I was hoping 2112 would enlighten me. I wanted to be a fan. But I can’t. Everybody in Rush excels at playing their instrument, no doubt. But ugh, there is not a song on this record I would ever choose to listen to again. I imagine the die-hards love this record, but though talented players, this album just isn’t for me. 3/5

not bad, but a 20 minute song is fucking nuts

Slappa da bass! Rush first album listened to and surprisingly high vocals. Solid album’

RYM 3.0

Can't deny their skill but not into this overblown prog stuff personally

Nothing exciting. Three stars.

Not m favourite Rush album but worthy.

Great album!

The first half of 2112 delivers a compelling prog-rock mini-opera, but the remaining tracks, though solid, feel fragmented and less essential.

Good. Space opera that has cool moments but nothing crazy exciting. The storyline is the most entertaining part. The rest of the album is ok, lessons is the shining moment especially the bass and drums

love rush

why is he whispering in my ear im scared - twilight zone mi se sviđa prva pesma je zapravo kao neka 20-ominutna rok opera, its nice! sviđa mi se što ima jasno podeljene odeljke, odnosno "činove" i što je veoma dinamična instrumentalizacija. dont ask me what hes singing about i dont know bout all that! lep je ostatak albuma samo što eto, nisam pala na dupe. ali ima zaista kul momenata i stvarno su lepe melodije i generalno dobro zvuče pesme. to su takva opšta mesta ali nemam ništa mnogo specifično da kažem sryyyy. nisam prevelik fan ovog skičanja što nazivaju pevanjem, ali to generalno ne volim. ovde je podnošljivo donekle, svakako ima mnogo lepši glas kad normalno peva. bubnjevi i gitara su strava zapravo.

Always want to like it more than I do so honestly a little underwhelming

I don’t think I fully understand or appreciate the lyricism or lore around rush and honestly, don’t have the time to deep dive now. But I liked the way it sounded (heard a lot of Led Zeppelin)

Not bad, but not my favourite.

I admire Rush more than I enjoy their albums. I'm a big fan of Moving Pictures, but I couldn't quite get myself to enjoy this at the same level. I'm sure it is ahead of its time and would be absolutely amazing if I were a stoner in 1976. I really like "The Twilight Zone" on side B.

Hmm idk

Rush sucks!

Quite uneven album. Some parts are boring, others are really enjoyable.

Neil Peart is renowned for his superb drumming and I can't argue with that. I've never been a fan of Geddy Lee's vocals, though or Rush's style of rock. The first 20 min track was a chore to get through. The rest was better, but still not particularly enjoyable.

Nerdy, but good.

The first three times I played this I found it hard to focus on the music. I think this is conceptually dated, in digital it doesn't work as well as the physical LP would. Pick a side, do you want the theatrical rock opera, or the heavy hitting singles? I appreciate this on the list because it feels like getting a few different angles on one band, and I'm looking forward to hearing more because of it. I'm a bigger fan of the less theatrical B-side myself, though I love the prog-ness of their rock opera. 3.4/5

Had heard of Rush but never their music! I enjoyed this, got a lot of Led Zeppelin vibes, especially from the singer. A bit of Who there too. Huge guitar sound like those bands too. Not really my kind of music but still!

20 minute song???? Holy crap

first song was 20 mins long ??? classic glam rock

Galavanting prog-rockestra at its best moments. At the end of the day though, it’s still prog rock so things often blend together, so many ideas get thrown at you that you can’t latch on to much. The 17 minute mark in “Overture” was pretty great, highlighting the best part of this record: the guitar solos. Very high-energy. This sounds like the old computer store I used to go into. CD-ROM’s of Warcraft-like games on the wall, old dudes with beards and square glasses working on opened desktops. 3/5, the mid slog continues

The album has a great message both symbolic and historic. The instrumental is great and the lyrics are catchy. It's a great soft rock classic album. My favorite song is The Twilight Zone.

La prima decisamente fa tutto l’album e spacca. Contenta di averla scoperta.

Adding to my adventure rock list

The proggy stuff on side one is great, and Geddy Lee can really wail. The back half left me cold, though.

Not for me but fun

I’ll be honest this was in one ear out the other. But I am pretty unwell so that might be causing that

Classic rock sounds

A 20 minute song is unnecessary. Especially when there's only 6 songs on the album. I didn't love this album in general but the band wasn't bad.

The Twilight Zone jams. Overall this album was good. 20 minute song was eh.

Great rock, sick instrumentals

Love the rock vibes

2112: overture is exceptionally geeky. Sounds great though! It keeps going and going. Interesting to hear a song that is essentially an entire story on its own with multiple phases. You can hear multiple influences throughout. From Iron Maiden to The Who. While the album is pretty well done it is all a bit same-y and has a generic sound despite the experimentation with structure.

2112 isn’t my favourite Rush album, but it’s still a solid rock record. There are frequent comparisons between Rush and Led Zeppelin, yet Rush always struck me as having far more complex lyricism and more thoughtfully constructed melodies. I do respect that the band pushed ahead with this album despite resistance from their record label, but personally I don’t enjoy 20-minute, self-indulgent rock interludes. For that reason, what could have been a 4 ends up as a 3 for me.

Neil Peart Is brilliant, and this album is really well done but Rush is an acquired taste I think.

Classic background music rock. Wouldn’t ever put this on myself but if it came on while listening to classic rock radio, I wouldn’t mind.

Unique

A kinda space like album with a lot of twist and the feeling of not really knowing what’s about to happen which I love.

Better than expected but struggling for a standout track

Felt like I understood all the classic rock ever and also like I was in an episode of Supernatural

Nice prog rock album. The behemoth 2112, whose story seems to be based on an Ayn Rand novella, is a bit controversial for me because of the Rand connection. The second side is a good listen, typical Rush style.

Not my usual listen but really enjoyed

woulda been higher but that riff in track two... you know which one :/

Yk not the worst just like…idk

First track was long. Don't see the hype

Holy shit a 20 minute song is crazy! I used to hate Rush but this was more pleasant than I remember.

its alright i guess, just got a little bored.

Good, but feels too long after starting with a 20 min song. 3.5⭐

Impressive drumming

Canadian rock band The vocalist!! 🤯🤯

title track had its highs and lows, and like the rest of the album, the drums and bass held it together well. the second half for me was more interesting, especially the twilight zone and tears

Laid out like a 2 part ordeal. The back half has the fun songs

interesting, first time I listened to them

I can’t. Prog rock just doesn’t do it for me. I get the artistry and the level of talent. Neil Peart is obviously a genius. I respect those aspects. Just not appealing. I can’t give it a bad review. I know rush is loved by many and out of respect, I know it’s not a bad album even though I dont like it.

I think this is an okay album, I just don't get why side 1 is one song. There's no real cohesion to it, it doesn't really make sense. Just make them their own individual songs, I think I would've liked it more if that had been what happened. Favorites: A Passage to Bangkok, The Twilight Zone, Tears

Enjoyed it, reminded of Led Zeppelin and echoes of Yes in some of the softer vocals.

idk just rock music

great opener, rest is kinda boring

It was a Rush album 🤷🏼‍♂️

# Album Name: 2112 # Artist: Rush # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Not bad. Nothing to write home about though. Which is why i havent. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? meh

Hoped for better

Big prog fan, but can’t get into Rush. Objectively it’s probably fine and all, bu I hate the voice, don’t really like the composition, cringe about all those flashy unnecessary drum fills that only distract. I want to love it but can’t

Like every properly raised Canadian kid my parents sang these songs to me as lullabies. I never really liked Rush night, which was Tuesday. Thursday, however, was Neil Young night which was great because by the time I was 4 I could play most of the guitar solos on my little plastic guitar. Three timbits.

They can wail a plenty, and Neil Peart's reputation is richly deserved. That's the good. Geddy Lee's vocals is the bad. I'd consider listening to Rush more if I didn't think a) the vocals AND lyrics are deeply stupid; and b) they just constantly went the hell off, rather than having these stretches of being melodic and low-key. All that said, better than I expected.

I would generally consider myself a fan of Rush - I love their better known songs and admire their extraordinary musicianship. This is an interesting album - one I was definitely aware of but had never listened to. It really shows the band as a work in progress and where they’d end up. I do not however think they had really found their footing yet, as popular as this album was/is. It had a tendency to be ponderous and just feels a little tight - like their trying to hard. “Lessons” was by far my favorite track - they seem most confident here, snd this one really predicts their future - conventional rock song structures on the surface that offer them the opportunity to dive fully into their exquisite musicianship. Glad I listened to this.

A 20 minute song?? Listenable, but not a big fan. Tears is good

Bändi on taas tuttu, mutta tätä levyä en ollut kuullut aiemmin. Ei mitään suosikkimusaani. Soitto on tietysti mahtavaa, mutta vähän liikaa ”progehtavaa”. Geddy Leen laulusoundi on kyllä erikoinen, enkä oo oikein ikinä siihen tottunut. Avaruusteemasta plussaa!

There is no band that I loved at some point that has dropped off more in terms of my enjoyment of their music at almost age 53 vs age 23. I loved these guys and saw them multiple times in the 90s. Then I just stopped. So I was curious what I would think of one of my formerly favorite Rush albums in 2025. Sadly, I just don’t get it anymore. The title track is as absurd as any Crimson journey across the musical scale. And the Ayn Rand sci fi lyrics. Ugh. Side two has some ok tracks, something for nothing, passage to Bangkok . The rest is fine. Obviously the musicianship is top notch, these guys were among the best. But it’s just so much wankery and I’m not into it

Well it was a breath of fresh air from yesterday, but I was hoping to get more out of it than I did. I appreciated that there were peaks and valleys to the album but it just a didn’t have the X factor I was looking for.

I listened to this album but not a lot stood out really - the music is fine and perfectly listenable to, but not that memorable

When I saw that one song alone was 20 minutes long, I wasn't so sure I would be into it. Typically songs of that length get to be boring at some point. However, that wasn't the case with this one. It built up as the song went on and became much better with each passing minute. The B side was also quite good. I think this was a nice album, and it subverted my expectations.

While I do think Rush is a pretty good band (proven by this album and 'Moving Pictures' especially), I don't think they're a particularly great 'prog' band, at least not in the traditional sense of the word. I was pretty excited when I saw the 20-minute titular opener, but was left very unsatisfied by the end of it, given its lack of an engaging progression and its more medley style, which felt like a bunch of unfinished ideas glued together. There are certainly some good ideas on that opener, especially the final very hard-rock driven part of the medley, but it all felt very unsatisfying as a single track. Luckily, Rush are better at writing these tighter 3-4 minute tracks, as proven by songs like 'Limelight' on their other album, and 'A Passage to Bangkok' and 'The Twilight Zone' off this album. The band's obviously immensely talented, Geddy Lee especially is an incredibly evocative songwriter, as seen on 'Tears', and an even more expressive bassist - just listen to that bouncy line on 'Lessons'. So yeah, certainly a talented band, but god I wish that opener didn't sour the rest of the thing FOR ME. But it is what it is.

I've been dreading this moment. I knew a Rush album was going to show up eventually. I am not a Rush guy at all, but people that like Rush are reeeeally into Rush. Like they want to convince you that they're the greatest band in the world but honestly they don't really do anything for me. Admittedly, I've never taken a deep dive into their discography and really only know their music on a surface level with their hit songs. I'm also not a musician so maybe I don't really understand the complexities of their songs and the skill level it takes to create such epics. Maybe I'm just too dumb to understand prog rock. All that being said, I overall enjoyed this album and it did alter my opinion of Rush a bit. Maybe the '70s era, before all the experimental synths, is more to my taste. I was not aware that Geddy Lee had a soulful shriek a la Robert Plant. That along with Neil Peart's masterful drumming, you basically have a Led Zeppelin that geeked out over Philip K. Dick instead of Tolkien. So I think I vibe more with the sci-fi heavy metal in their earlier work. There is still some oddities that I don't necessarily love. I could do without a 20 minute medley, especially since it's very clear that it's multiple songs that could've been broken up into separate tracks. I'm sure that's blasphemous to say about a prog rock band, so that one is on me. The use of the stereotypical oriental riff in Passage to Bangkok was out of left field and pretty unpleasant. So did this album make me a fan of prog rock? Nope. Did it make me a fan of Rush? Eh. Did it make me understand Nick Andopolis' love for Rush in Freaks and Geeks? Actually, yeah.
