Reviews (page 6 of 13)

A great album.

Notable tracks: Only Happy When It Rains, Stupid Girl

I'm all in as of the bass on As Heaven Is Wide.

I had almost no expectations going in and I was pleasantly surprised. I genuinely like this sound and might have to buy this album for my regular rotation

A great example of the beginnings of post grunge - one of the core 90s rock albums.

What a pleasant surprise! This album is full of earworm guitar riffs and hooks, and Shirley's voice sounds both dangerous and sexy at the same time.

Somebody was listening to a lot of Nirvana.... At least that was my first thought when I put this on. But it moves in different directions as we go along, and even that first song works. My expectations were pretty low going in, another mid 90's album from a band I've never heard of. With a name like "Garbage". But I'm pleasantly surprised. This is rather good. Actually, quite good. Some of it it really good! The music is mostly upbeat, solid alt-rock. Lots of good bass, which is a big thing to me. The lyrics are a little angst-y, but not excessive. Nothing too complicated. Really good, clean sound. Really, this is the kind of thing I came to this project for. I'll need to listen to this a few more times. 4/5

I’ve never heard of them before so this was a pleasant surprise. A great collection of songs.

This Garbage album is anything but. A solid listen all the way through. When I first heard the album, the hook for me was Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains. The rest was gravy.

Enjoyed this quite a bit. Never really knew much about Garbage but I enjoyed their alt rock that still felt like pop music at times. There was still song structure. I think this will hold up well to repeated listenings

A brilliant album that blurs the lines between genres. A bit of alternative rock, industrial and grunge all packed into a very 90s album. Loved this one

Shirley Manson is a fucking icon. Album has some filler. Getting portishead vibes which I never got before. Lots of down tempo, soft vocals and drum machine.

Catchy songs on this album. Very grungy and hard rock with some songs you just can’t get out of your head. stupid Girl is one of those. But there are others. Don’t see this being a casual listen. However, I could see putting this in my run list. It would be good music to run to. I just don’t honk I could take it in large doses.

Blind album and artist. Know these hits and that's pretty much it. Solid album, but the Singles are the creme de la creme...

I've always, with my limited knowledge of the band, lumped Garbage into those bands that are associated with grunge even though they aren't, and I think listening to a whole album of it breaks that stigma for better and worse. Its certainly got a unique style that's a mix of the angst of the 90s with the more laid back approach of trip hop, all with this alternative rock undertones, and it certainly gives it its own vibe, but it also leads to a lot of the tracks feeling confused as to what they want to be, rather it being angry yet seductive, or bored rebellious, it all gives a feeling of trying to emulate many of the greats from the time, and while it certainly stands on its own in parts (especially on the tracks you'd least expect, rather than the hits) it also feels confused. Her voice is great, however, and I really like some of the effects they messed with here. It breathes fresh air into a genre that was stsrting to be consumed by more and more just trying to emulate the style for a quick buck, but I think a more focused approach could do wonders for this album. I did really enjoy what I did like, though, and thats always pleasant.

Wouldn't have come across this one normally, very good

Pretty good. Kind of a chick singer pop/ grunge thing

It's the music that saved us from "big hair bands". Raw at times but nonetheless great grunge. Worth it.

Classic 90s alt rock

Iconic album. Takes me back

Olipas kivaa ysärimenoa! Just sitä ysärin huoletonta genresekoittelua, mitä välillä kaipaa.

Otro clásico. Y justo que hace un mes compré el cd que nunca pude comprar en esos años. Por ahí hay algunos tipos sin gusto que dicen que este disco es fome y sin sabor. Están equivocados. Muy equivocados.

I've heard of this band but if it weren't for that episode of X-FILES where they play, I'M ONLY HAPPY WHEN IT RAINS, I probably would not know anything else about this band and their sound. Good, solid 90s grungy sound, if I was listening to rock music during that time period I probably would have really liked these guys/girls. Will I ever choose to listen to this again? Unlikely.

Positiv överraskning. Många catchy och melodiösa låtar som är lätta att gilla (fyror), även om ingen når riktigt upp till högsta nivån. Kul med lite triphop här och var också.

Remember this album. Not one I listen to regularly but worthy of its place.

i feel like this album is solid and sonically enjoyable very 90s... i am feeling a 3.5 which could round down to a 3 or it could go up to a 4 because one time i saw garbage at a music festival as a teenager and everyone in the audience annoyed me so i thought i hated garbage for years but it turns out they're not so bad. so maybe that merits a 4.

Great album

I knew the big hits from this album, but they still sound reasonably fresh, maybe as they seemed to fall out of general rotation pretty quickly. I usually don't like female vocalists, but I've always liked Shirley Manson's voice and it's a good fit here. The rest of the band are also great and the production is fantastic. It's maybe a little too glossy and perfect, but there's no real dip in quality, and the album felt exactly the right length. I can see why the lyrics might be cringeworthy for some listeners, but they're fine for what they are, and I enjoyed listening to how Shirley is only happy when the weather is bad. Almost tempted to push this to 5 stars, but I'll settle with a strong 4 stars.

Liked. Will listen again.

Nirvana makes this album out and it's in every fucking Rolling Stone list

Superb Album

Älskar 'Queer', 'A Stroke of Luck', och 'Vow'. Bästa låt: Queer.

Cool x

A neat mix of sounds on this album. The first few tracks are rock pretty heavily, followed by a couple that could be used in an anime cartoon soundtrack (in a good way). I recognized a few songs from the radio. Overall a pretty good sound. Low 4

Yay! This was one of the many albums that I loved in high school.

Wow. WFT?!? How did I miss these guys? Maybe I mistook them for another band. Wow. This is really good! Each track is another good one. Nice. I'm a fan now!

Just an all-around solid record.

I liked the vibes. The vocals went well with the beats

So not garbage !! I liked this a lot - feel like the songs worked together well n were also pretty varied - good listening experience, solid 9/10

7/10 - Not bad. I liked a few songs but Milk was really boring. Queer and Only Happy When It Rains were pretty good

A little derivative but overall just an enjoyable listen, 7.5/10

Better than I remembered

rubbish

Geggjuð plata. Elska þessa rödd!

Garbage’s debut presents a way to understand the mid-90s alternative scene. A little of electronica, distorted strings and pop harmonies singing depressing lyrics. If you look a little further, behind the singles on this album, you will find tasteful empty spaces. Sections where little happens. Those are the testimonials of a commoditization of sadness, an erotic sadness. I see it here, on placebo's, manic street preachers’, and suede’s work too. A sexy way to love your own misery.

I liked the album.

Ah 90's music!

хорошее

Влюбился в песню Stupid Girl. Хз каким образом, но вот бывает: почти с первого взгляда. Очень модная музыка, которая не особо-то и потеряла со временем.

Might be an American band but it’ll be remembered in part as Scotland’s own 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Ik wil dit een 3.5 geven maar dan ronden we naar boven af. Was aangenaam verrast door deze garage!

fun listen

Solid 90s girl rock.

I do like the sound of Garbage in the morning. That blend of grungy guitars, pop hooks, samples & breakbeats is very, very, *very* 90s, but also kind of up my alley. Roughly half of the album is really strong, though the other half is just alright and it could’ve benefitted from being a couple of tracks shorter, if I’m honest. Still enjoyed it, mind. Not an all-timer, but definitely list-worthy: 3.5 / 4

Great album, has a couple of duds though. Overall very enjoyable.

One person is garbage, is another person‘s gold dust.

Shirley is my favorite Manson.

Erica: I love her voice, it is super chick rock and everything to rock should be but I don't feel like this album showcased it. Also, the audio leveling was a little bit weird. But overall great album. Bryant: I saw her I think 2 years ago when she was touring with Alanis and it was a great show. Still crushing it. I thought this album was great.

C’est loin d’être une poubelle ce petit album là

Coming into this I knew nothing about Garbage, I had just seen this album cover before and I had been suggested it with no context on how it sounded. When I looked it up on Wikipedia before first hearing it I saw the genres listed as Alt. Rock, Dance-Rock and Power Pop which made me think this would be a typical run of the mill mid-90's alt. rock album. I then saw Butch Vig was a member who I knew from liner notes as the producer of Nevermind which gave me a lot of hope for this album because being around great musicians often creates great musicians. That feeling would end up being more true than my worry of it being run of the mill. This album is full start to end of absolute jams with incredibly ear-catching influences. *Note* I am going to say that a song had an outstanding chorus a lot because this album is full of really appealing and memorable choruses. "Supervixen" starts the album out with a nice track that features really great instrumentation. Some tracks on this album like "Supervixen" has a sort of wall of sound feel which I love if done correctly and in that way kind of reminds me of shoegaze. The next track is my personal favorite on the album, "Queer", which I love because it features an absolutely killer hook that will definitely stay stuck in my mind for the next few months. Alongside this hook it features really interesting trip hop, alt. rock production with a really cool bassline alongside some really interesting electronic instruments. It even features a switch up from electronic to traditional instruments that really makes this track an absolute joy to listen to. "Only Happy When It Rains" feels like a bit of a change of pace of sorts as it starts with much more toned down instrumentation with just one distorted guitar but then it crescendos to another full soundscape like the first two tracks. One aspect of the track that really stands out to me is it features what sounds like a vocal sample that is looped (or maybe the lead just performed it but either way) after the really catchy and is my favorite part of the track alongside some really cool electronic wobbling sounds that come in on the second verse. It also features a really solid chorus. "As Heaven Is Wide" is the actual change up of pace on this album. It features what sounds like a version of (or at least something reminiscent of) the Amen break which immediately makes me think of drum and bass which is then followed with a really low distorted guitar and some synths which does not sound like it should work but it all comes together to create a really cool blend of sounds. The choice to use a more soft, toned-down vocal style I think blended well on the track. "Not My Idea" is another track with good soundscape and a good chorus. I really like the distortion on the guitars on this track the only issue is the chorus can get a little annoying on relistens. "A Stroke Of Luck" is another song that leans in a more soft tone which I think is a nice switch up after the relatively brash chorus of the previous track. It features on of my favorite choruses on the album and I like the more subdued instrumentation letting the vocals shine on this one. It is really just the drums and a guitar or two alongside the chorus. "Vow" was pretty solid but it did feel like a somewhat watered down version of a couple other songs with a few outstanding characteristic which was some really cool guitar riffs that were very appealing to hear, some really cool layering of sounds at around the two minute mark and some really cool variations in dynamics throughout. "Stupid Girl" was the big hit of the album but being a 2000's baby I had never heard it before. It makes a lot of sense why it was the big hit because it has one of the most ear-wormy choruses on the album while also featuring some of the most widely appealing riffs on the album which is in no way a bad thing. It is a really good song and it still features some interesting experimentation like the feature of some interestingly crackling noises and the addition of keyboards to the wall of sound created which they didn't do much on other tracks. "Dog New Tricks" takes a more industrial rock path which is a nice change up from the past few lighter songs. I think they incorporated the industrial rock ok but not as good as the trip hop, electronica or even as good as on other parts of this album. It is still good but I think it is one of the weaker songs on the album and I think it only is saved because I like the chorus and some of the little instrumental choices on the track. "My Lover's Box" is a track that features a big divide between verse and chorus which adds some intrigue. The verse feature much more stripped back and spacier instrumentation and the chorus features the aforementioned wall of sounds style. It is a pretty cool track and it features some of the most memorable vocal melodies and choruses on the album. The next track, "Fix Me Now", is what I can only describe as a typical deep cut. It is not really as flashy or out there as the hits but does follow in their footsteps and it features some interestingly layered vocals that to me sound like they are imperfectly layered but that might just be me overthinking things. Either way I liked it but not as much as other tracks on the album. This leads to the final track "Milk" which again focuses on trip-hop influences and it leads to a really cool spacey track that is a really nice conclusion to the album especially because they allow for the track to stay spacy throughout and not do a switch up to the wall of sound style they used in previous tracks. I like the choice and I think that the vocals and think the layers of keyboard while create a sort of juxtaposition to the layering of guitars and drums on previous tracks. Overall this was a really good album with some of the most memorable and ear catching choruses on any '90s alt-rock album I have heard. I love the wall of sound technique (MBV and Velvet Underground are some of my favorite bands) and I think it was applied beautifully in this album. I would say that I only have two issues with the album, that being some of the songs use too similar of sonic pallets to the point that it can be hard to distinguish them from one another. I also think that later in the album some of the choruses get a little weaker as they were incredible from track 1 to 8 for the most part. I really want to give this a 10/10 because I genuinely think "Queer", "Only Happy When It Rains", "As Heaven Is Wide" and "Milk" are some of the best songs I have heard and will be in my constant rotation but I do however think these two negatives weigh it down a little too much to get a 10 but it still gets a very strong 9.5/10.

Enjoyed this album. Listened to it twice in a row. I like the 90's vibe. 9/10

Never would of thought to play this in my day to day. But very enjoyable and lots of memories these songs bring back.

Fav songs: I'm only happy when it rains, Milk

Love some good 90s grunge.

Fits right into the sound of the 90s without seeming dated 30 years later. The lyrics are way more intelligent than some of their contemporaries. Supervixen is a great opening track

Why does it seem like 30 years after it's release this album is actually super underappreciated? This is a solid album with some serious bangers

As a kid, never enjoyed this album. As an adult, love the lyrics, the sarcasm, the music. Shirley Manson’s singing is stellar! 4/5!

Very grungy, very nice

Interesting, haven't heard of this band before, some good songs, would listen to it against

Grew up with Grunge. Good album

Nice electro pop/rock

90’s classic

Fun grunge, lots of swagger. SAVOUR: Queer, Stupid Girl SKIP: Not My Idea

Somewhere between Nirvana's Nevermind and Nine Inch Nail's Downward Spiral, this album is just the right amount of 90's edge. Not quite grunge and I love that. Songs like Vow are head bobbingly catchy. You can draw a straight line from music like this in the nineties to the ultra edgy early 2000's. Favorite tracks: Queer, Vow

———————————————————————

Highly curated with great songs. Queer is a stomper and Milk adds some atmosphere. Some pioneering 90s sounds. 90s big beat rock pop with great vocals especially Stupid Girl

pretty good 90s angst

2 or 3 songs shorter and it would be a no-brainer 5 to me. Amazing album, but it drags a bit on the second half.

Not garbage, just oozing with 90s. Made the lil edge lord in me happy. “Stupid Girl” always manages to get stuck in my head

Great 90s album. Stupid girl and Only happen it rains are great songs

great record, not what I expected; more mid-90s Radiohead than Pearl Jam. will listen again

girls rock love, love Shirley Manson. wasn’t sure on the first listen but the second listen confirmed the bangers favs of the bunch: queer, only happy when it rains, as heaven is wide, not my idea

industrial for normies

I had more nostalgia for this than I remembered having.

Making teenagers depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel.

Possibly higher than a 4 but I didn’t get to pay full attention. Will definitely run it back.

I like this, very catchy beats and the singing is somber and intriguing. I like the sort of vaporwave sound in the background giving it this ghostly vibe.

I liked this. It's definitely a stepping stone for what we have today but it held up for me.

As the first track, Supervixen starts, I’m scared it’s going to be one of those hard rock albums that bore me because the songs all sound alike. Thankfully, my fears weren’t realized. Queer, the second track, barely sounds like rock at all. It’s quite the catchy midtempo dance track. As Heaven is Wide is another favorite on this album. It reminds me of music that plays on race car video games. A Stroke of Luck slows down the pace a bit and takes us in a different direction. But Vow ramps us right back up. And there we remain pretty much until the final track, Milk, which sounds more vibey and ethereal. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of melodies on this album. It left me curious enough to dive deeper into the Garbage catalog.

I understand why I love it that much when it came out, Shirley Mason's voice stood out in a sea of Brit Pop.

Very nice bass and guitar sounds and all round an enjoyable album.

6/6 hot trash

Vrolijk album. Leuke combinatie van pop, rock en some dance. Mooi gespeeld en mooi gezongen. ****

Never heard of this album before but this is fire. Great edgy alt pop with cool vocals, dancey and mysterious at the same time.

I agree with Roy’a sentiment on this being Walmart music, but I feel as if it has been the best album we have been given so far. Musically the most varied and around what I enjoy in terms of 90’s rock.

The dirtiest grunge polished into a pop record. Butch Vig's various experience gels together into something both angsty and danceable. How could a teenager in the 90s not have loved this album?

decent britpop indie

There's something special about this album. At first, I thought it was just a 2-hit wonder. "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains" seem different to me - or it's just the fact that I've heard it a thousand times. The rest of the album has some kind of boredom in it. Or rather "whatever" in her voice. They perform as if they don't care. That's unusual.

Oh, this album has this one hit wonder. I think it is nothing special but I liked it and definitely it is better than avarage 3

I liked the sound of this a lot! Extremely fun post-grunge rock.

Great alt rock/grunge!

I adored this album at the time and was worried that it wouldn't hold up after all this time and...it kinda does? The lyrics aren't necessarily the deepest, and what at the time sounded futuristic now just sounds very 90s, but I do feel there are decent enough songs underneath it all to keep it together. While the singles (Queer, Stupid Girl, Only happy when it rains) are clearly the most immediate, some of the other tracks are surprisingly good. Downsides - the rhythms, while having multiple layers, are pretty loopy and repetitive, and some lyrics are a little "15 year oldest journal entry". That said, Shirley Manson's whole vibe does elevate it above bands like Republica that were doing similar things. Definitely worth checking out if you're not familiar.

Bien. No sé pq no le doy un cinco.

Amazing first half, 2nd half couldn't compete unfortunately.

Was really surprised by this one!

Solid album, with a little bit of sag in the middle. They play a lot of different sounds competently and have a few solid hits.

This album exceeded my expectations. I was only familiar with "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl" going in, and while those are two classic 90's rock songs, I expected them to be the high points on an otherwise standard 90's rock album. But no, the quality stays consistent throughout. Shirley Manson is effortlessly cool and sexy, and the music sounds fresh even now, nearly thirty years later. This is an album of well-constructed rock that proves Garbage is far from it, and should maybe even be mentioned among the best bands to come out of the 90's.

Solid album, I liked it a lot. Fav tracks: Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, A Stroke Of Luck, Milk

Okay, Garbage are actually pretty good? I only knew the hits, but there’s some good stuff here, a nice mix between grunge, trip hop and even touches of riot girl. Good on ya, gang. C+, lingering into B territory

I was a fan of Garbage before this as they exude the classic alternative 90’s sound. Three of their big hits are on this one and it really made me reminisce. Very cool

OOOh Garbage, heerlijke rommel dit

Daaaamn echt goede ontdekking.

Some good tunes, not the biggest fan of the sound as it doesn't do much for me emotionally. Sounds dated. But since I gave Bob Marley a 3 and in hindsight absolutely loathed the album this gets 4.

liked it, liked its vibe

Solid 90s rock. Definitely not garbage.

Bit edgy but I like it for what it is

I enjoyed the vibe of this one and the music was good as well. I liked her voice. I think it fits pretty well for this style of music. Some of the instrumentation was pretty cool too and kept my attention. My favourite songs were Queer, As Heaven Is Wide, and Stupid Girl.

This album has a few iconic hits and I enjoyed listening to it. Took me back to 1995.

Didn't know Garbage outside of a few songs, left feeling satisfied Love Manson's vocals in this album And while the production sounds incredibly mid-90s, it's also idiosyncratic and not easily comparable to other acts of this time. I've heard "Stupid Girl" before but only now realized they sampled the drums in The Clash's "Train in Vain" HL: "Not My Idea", "Stupid Girl", "Milk", "Queer"

Garbage is great. I have long hated "Only Happy When It Rains", and to my family I will continue to pretend like I do. But I am man enough to admit that it is actually a good song and I understand the sentiment a lot more at this point in my life. "Stupid Girl" is easily my favorite Garbage song. It is just a really good album.

Hits different at the gym

Recognised some of the songs. Nice to know the album/band they came from.

I loved it at the time. Now I love about half of it. The other half is a wee bit overproduced and not as exciting. Queer, Stupid Girl and Milk are amazing. Some of the other stuff does less, bit that's okay.

My first reaction to seeing this album pop up on the 1001 site was to try and lower my expectations. I haven't listened much to Garbage in the past, and most of my friends just plain don't like them. It turns out this is a pretty good album ... three or four songs are definitely made for radio, but some of the others -- Supervixen, Queer, As Heaven is Wide -- are worth replaying.

Great sounding album. Well sequenced and killer singles that didn't feel like sell-outs. A great record.

One that I surprisingly didn't listen to outside the hits on Saturday morning music shows or outright own since I loved there next two albums, I'll put that down to being a stupid teenager as it has a very 90's understated cool about it that I would have eaten up back then and still enjoy today.

I was excited to see this album come up, its been a favorite since it was released. I enjoy the overall production on it, taking the distortion of grunge but putting putting some clear edges on it made for a very distinct sound at the time if that makes sense, and there is enough going on with layers of instruments & vocals to really keep my ears interested. Great hooks throughout - like the bassy-synth line on "As Heaven is Wide". I never heard the Shirley Manson / Beth Gibbons comparison before - while they both went in a 'cool' direction, I think Shirley's delivery is much more aggressive and she's definitely a captivating front woman. 4/5.

Yeah... I love this album. I wouldn't say it's the greatest album of the 90's, but I give it a solid 4/5. I hadn't listened to it in a while and I enjoyed getting to revisit it today.

'Doomy' alt rock shifts from hints of grunge to more mainstream rock. Elements of more dance/repetitive sounds mix with sharp guitarwork. Standout is the catchy "Stupid Girl."

I enjoyed it. It was chill and was a nice listen. I caught myself listening to it a few more times after the first listen. Still enjoyed it just as much. Garbage wasn’t actually garbage more like gasoline.

Initially, it sounds like most other alt rock albums of the 90s. Its very good musically and i enjoy the vocal quality. Maybe this only sounds generic because ive heard so much alt rock from the 90s and early 00’s that were influenced by the early/mid 90s alt scene… perhaps this was some new shit at the time that took people by surprise, but listening now, its not surprising me. It is good though, i enjoy it as it fits into a genre ive been surrounded by my whole life. I think its hard to justify why this is one of the albums on this list, but again i think its because ive been desensitized to alt rock in such a way that i enjoy it almost by default that i cant even recognize when an alt rock band has changed the game or not. A Stroke of Luck is a vibe and a half. Stupid girl is a little long and repetitive. I am boppin to this record ngl. I enjoy this record quite a bit, theres many alt rock bands, many women-led, that i can clearly hear Garbage’s influence on. I still dont believe it is quite suited for this list, though… Is this an album i would buy in vinyl? Yeah probably. Would rate 3.75/5 if possible, but i lean toward 4 more

I really enjoy the industrial/lofi sound from the 90s... This scratched that itch!

Ao contrario do que se esperava, nao eh garbage.

Shirley Manson is just cool. Queer is still as good as when I first heard it. Some filler I didn't care for but still a record I enjoyed listening to.

Was really happy to listen to this one again. Some great 90s alternative pop songs on here.

Moody, cool as fuck

really interesting and pioneering, obviously. not precisely my cup of tea genre-wise, but you gotta respect the medium and the experimentation behind the work

If I could choose anyone in the world to have the same singing voice as, I would make sure that Shirley Manson is on the list. I've always loved her low, raspy voice that reeked of rebellion. This record is just that too. Rebellious, edgy, dark, and sexy. It's '90s alt rock with more teeth. Also - had no idea that Butch Vig was the drummer of Garbage this whole time. A powerhouse band, no wonder. Standouts are Stupid Girl, Only Happy When It Rains, A Stroke of Luck, Dog New Tricks, and Milk.

Anticipated, well, garbage... Turned out to be a delightful listen. Great rocker from female led group.

Garbage is one of those inexplicable holes in my music collection; I don't own so much as a single mp3 of theirs, which is just bizarre. I really need to do something about that.

Better than I remember. Kudos to Shirley Mason & the band for still drawing crowds at their shows. Solid 90s alt rock.

I love Garbage.

Every day is bin day with Garbage.

Pretty good but the general dreary mood of the album gets exhausting

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Only happy when it rains, Not my idea, Stroke of luck, Stupid girl, My lover’s box, Milk

I hadn’t listened to this album in ages. I like it a lot. It’s not a favourite of mine but there are several standout tracks here. Truly an excellent example of 90s angst rock.

At the time I really liked the record, it outlived its stay very quickly though. Catchy yes ..but something is missing. Lyrics are silly for most of the time - I am only happens when it rains (boeie) - even though they got nice references (e.g. to the Jesus & Mary Chain). But it is not that. I will still give it 4 stars for being so catchy, but it is a bit too calculated. I listened to the 20th Anniversary and liked the extra tracks more. The Vic Chesnutt cover is great. The Nelly Hooper remix of no1 crush is so much better than the original - it somehow gets it right and adds the missing element. Original album: 3.5 (best song: Stupid Girl - probably because it is the Clash) 20th anniversary: 4

Well composed songs, great sound, a tad monotonous.

sounds like girlboss rock

Super loved! This whole musical style (post-grunge alt-rock?) is something I want to explore more of. The female vocalist was sublime.

Shirley Manson hunts you down if you don't enjoy this album.

Garbage is a Alternative Rock band from Madison, WI, USA. This is their first album and only appearance on the 1001 albums list. Singles: --------------------------------------------- Vow (#26 US Alt, #138 UK) Only Happy When It Rains (#16 US Alt, #29 UK) Queer (#12 US Alt, #13 UK) Stupid Girl (#24 US, #2 US Alt, #4 UK) Milk (#10 UK) Initial Impression: Thumbs Up 4/5

Bien. No sé pq no le doy un cinco.

A new one for me and I really enjoyed it!

Pure 90s. Like smashing pumpkins but a lot more danceable. Really quite liked it.

I wouldn't have categorized myself as a fan of Garbage, but I remember all of the singles from this album from when they were released. This was my first time listening to the whole album. All of the tracks were good. "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl" were tracks that I have liked from when they were new. "Fix Me Now" is a new favorite and gave me a reason to round up to 4 stars. I could listen to this album again.

I really love the sound of Garbage. I'm sure a lot of that is down to the fact that a lot of the band are music production nerds and have carried it across to the band. The guitars are droney and interesting, and I really love the big sound they generate. Then you have a bit of trip-hop flavour seeping in there, and Shirley's vocals on top. I like the album as a whole, but there's some real stand-out tracks in here. I particularly love both Queer and Milk. Great stuff.

Loved this!! The vocals really grew on me

Wow! I really enjoyed this album. I'm slightly familiar with Garbage (When I Grow Up is one of my favorite jams), but this is my first time to listen to a whole album of theirs. Shirley Manson is a great vocalist, and the band did a wonderful job producing this album. The instrumentation is so wild and unique, that it almost transcends what I think of when I'm mentally trying to place an album in a particular decade. I think this album is going to go into my regular rotation of things I listen to.

Really good pop/rock album that still sounds great. Not perfect - there's a couple of so so tunes - but a solid 4

Great album!

Pour your misery down on me

Really good album - some great tunes.

I'm aware this is a manufactured band to sell alt rock to the mainstream, but so much music comes from that melding of art and capitalism so just as sex pistols I'm going to judge this purely on how much I enjoyed the music right now... And on that it's simply not bad few stand outs with only happy when it rains, but ethereal slower tunes as well. Overall 3.5

Goed album zeg!

Still a great pop album. Dii oh rant sound dated almost 30 years later.

RIP Shirley Mansin

loved it.

This was wonderful nostalgia.

apparently grunge is a big gap in my musical knowledge because i’d never heard of this group, but this was really excellent. lyrics are fine-not-great but i didnt come for the lyrics, and everything else was really grimy and somewhat trippy. i really liked it.

6.5/10

O jee, het zal toch geen jeugdsentiment zijn. Maar ik vond dit best goed. Staan toch wel een aantal nummers op die me bekend voorkomen.

Good! very long, though. fun 90s alt rock

Good good

buenardópolis 8/10

Surprisingly excellent, especially production.

Contrary to the record/band name..this is pretty good

Solid album, lots of hits, love Shirley Manson. Subtracting 1 star because it's somewhat manufactured.

This album has that same sweet spot combo of alt rock and post punk that that elastics album did. This one was more alt rock and pop leaning than the elastics album though. I liked this quite a bit and only happy when it rains is probs my fav

I hadn’t listened to this in years, despite being a fan back in the day. I was delighted by how well is stands up. A marriage of sexy vocals, tightly constrained distortion and quality hooks. The Tricky remix of Milk is well worth seeking out.

Ooh, lot of nostalgia for this.... Not _quite_ enough to bump it to a five, but I'd give it 4.5 if I could. Fave track - "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl" both instantly transport me back in time...

I definitely had a Shirley Manson girl crush when this album came out.

This album is a strong mix of alternative rock, pop, and dance music. Despite its almost hourlong length, I found this album to be very enjoyable and it captures my attention throughout. I’m sure the Argumente can be made that this album dilutes the emergent alternative rock genre with commercial pop trappings but I think that is the wrong way to think about it. Commercialism is important for all of the popular genres and this album strikes a very clean balance.

hmm itseasiassa aika VITUN HYVÄ häh albumin keskiosa vähän paskaa mutta alkuloppu huhhuh tykkään hyvinkin paljon LÄHELLÄ VÄHÄN LIIAN LIPASEE LIIKAA semmosta rokki pokki jee jee paskaa mutta onneksi on vähän omalaatuisempi.....hyvä löytö en ole kuullutkaan bändistä... milk paras bisi

I seem to remember buying this for my sister, back in the day, as a birthday present, on Amazon. So I have had this album longer than I realized. I should have listened to it before now. Wow, what a good album. I think the star here is definitely Butch Vig. The production really makes every song hit with a punch. I don't think there was a single song that I disliked, maybe the last song was a little obvious (reminded me of STP's Kitchenware & Candybars). But otherwise, really good stuff!

I was not a fan of Garbage when they came out in the 90's. Not rock enough and too dance for me maybe. But all these years later I have a much better appreciation for their sound and I can hear so much of it in bands (who I like or don't mind) that came after them (e.g., Metric, AWOL Nation, even the Killers). It's kind of amazing how long it took for computer-aided rock to really take off. It seems like half the bands considered rock these days are just layering and looping computer and synth rock sounds. I think what I realized listening to the album for the last week is how catchy the real instrument sounds are and how well they're mixed with the "fake" instruments. I prefer the non-singles like Supervixen, Not My Idea, Dog New Tricks, or Fix Me Now (my favorite on the whole album) to the singles. I quite like Only Happy When it Rains now but I didn't in the 90's and I like Vow (a lesser known single) more than the bigger ones (Queer or Stupid Girl). All in all, a pretty solid album even though I tend not to like produced rock and prefer authentic rock and instruments.

Tough one. I really like this album, as it came out in some formative years for me, musically. I like all the songs, but is it classic?

Sound so thick you feel it fill up warehouses and pushing all the air out. So good!

It’s pronounced garbáge

Very 90s, great bass lines.

I probably sing "I'm only happy when it rains" once a week...

Cool stuff

79/100: I’m classifying this album as another hidden gem I’d never heard of before. I had no idea who Garbage was before getting this album, but wow do I love this group now. This album is quintessential 90’s grunge, and as a fan of grunge, I don’t know how I’d never heard it before. The song “Only Happy When it Rains” is an absolute banger, as is “Fix Me Now” and “Not My Idea.” In fact, I’d argue there’s not much filler on this album at all, even the songs that I wouldn’t classify as “great” are still very good. I’ll definitely be revisiting this group and album again in the future.

solid 7/10 not amazing, and those lyrics regularly made me roll my eyes but the production is actually pretty good mostly enjoyable with a few awkward quirks

Þetta er næs bandarískur tíundi áratugur. Manson er töff söngkona, margt að gerast hjá bandinu og lögin oftar skemmtileg en ekki. Tæpur fjarki og áfram veginn.

Hadn't listened to this in ages... and it's better than I remembered. Original CD, not the 2015 remaster.

Is there a more 90s band? Vat-grown hybrid of grunge guitars, dance beats and a sharp pop songwriting core. Almost like they were put together by a famous producer.... so with a slight caveat it's still a terrific sound even if the album is slightly too long. Ten tracks would have made it a whole lot better. So four stars. Can any album with the lyric I am milk. I am red hot kitchen really be five stars?

Not garbage! This took me back to high school. Not that this was my preferred genre of music at that time but you would hear Only Happy When It Rains all the time on the radio, the Box, or MTV.

It was a great listen again. The poppy grunge, the clever lyrics and some killer songs

I came in only knowing that one song everyone knows so my expectation were pretty lukewarm. Most of the songs completely leap over I'm Only Happy When It Rains.

FANTASTIQUE! Some really famous songs on here. young me remembers the dope ass theme for THe World is not enough. great band. i can't 5 star it, but i loved it.

Sleazy, sexy and cool. This is better than I remember from the time!

Hard to believe it's not a greatest hits album - with anthems like Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, and Stupid Girl on the track list. Quite a debut! Shirley Manson manages to ooze sex and scary at the same time.

Pop-rock con buenas melodías, buena voz y algún tema muy reconocible. Guitarrero a ratos

Alternative rock, 1995. An album to listen to have some fun and to enjoy catchy tracks. The record is solid in every of its parts and sounds really fresh. "Vow" and "Stupid Girl" are probably the best section of this excellent project.

I came in only knowing that one song everyone knows so my expectation were pretty lukewarm. Most of the songs completely leap over I'm Only Happy When It Rains.

Another great mid 90s album, there are some legitimate bangers on this one. Much fun had listening to this

A great alternative, post grunge album of the 90s. Garbage has a knack for mixing together happy-sounding music, catchy hooks, and dark lyrics. I really enjoy Shirley Manson's voice, and the slightly dark/creepy vibe of the music. This album is also full of late 90s-nostalgia for me, having grown up listening to it.

Thank you, 1001 Albums project, for introducing me to this band, and for the life of me I have nary a clue why up until this moment I missed this album, this band, and their music for the past 25+ years. Oh, well, I'm here now, and I love it. This album is fantastic. I haven't heard many bands that can take elements of punk and its related styles and infuse it with a bit of pop and techno and rock, etc., yet make it work really, really well. I'll have to go explore their albums that followed. But first, another listen-through on this one. So good!

Another 90s rock/pop band that I didn't know, but this time I really liked the album. Garbage sounded similar to Smashing Pumpkins, or for some reason Moloko, but maybe because the song were fresh for me, I had a nice time listening to it. Some songs, like 'milk' have potential of being repayable for quite a while. In general, very positive album.

Great album. Enjoyed and and will pull off some tracks

Fun 90 grunge

This album has some real gems that is for sure gonna be on repeat. 3.8 ⭐

i never considered myself a fan of grunge music! but this album has me rethinking that idea. i do see similarities with this album and others by female singer-songwriters in the nineties. the contents of and the focus on the lyrics, for one. this album is dark and emo! it allows me to really feel my feelings. shirley manson’s voice is perfect for garbage’s types of songs. so many songs where the guitar really stands out. but the bass on “as heaven is wide”?? wow. and no songs are duds! “stupid girl,” the only song i sort of knew on the album, containing a loop from “train in vain” by the clash absolutely blew my mind! their loops from various genres show garbage’s desire to not be defined. going to rate this a 4, but i wouldn’t be surprised if i regretted not submitting a 5.

Lots of familiar songs on here. And interesting blend of grunge and trip hop but all in all a bit muddy and miserable for my taste, I did enjoy it more than I was expecting though.

Willing to bet Billy Corgan was listening to this a lot when he wrote Adore.

Despite what the name belies, this album is not garbage! It's actually pretty good!

Big nostalgia album for me. They were one of the first bands I liked and knew that they were "new" music. The 007 song was a big one for me as a kid. Probably don't quite deserve a 4 but I need to give them more than a 3.

I conté uns quants temes demolidors

Only Happy When It Rains je GOATED pjesma ❤️ I ja sam ih sluso 2019 na inmusicu hehe

“this is a slay!”

Good 90s, few hits

sonzera

Not sure if it's the nostalgia talking but I thought this was a really strong album. A couple of songs didn't do it for me but overall it's a hell yes.

Brought back great memories of my childhood in the 90s. Some absolute bangers on this album!

I'm digging this; a cool weird, grunge-y vibe.

I liked this! There were some pretty good songs on here.

Stupid good :)

Pretty good, I liked a few songs, others were a bit forgettable but nothing inherently bad with it.

Didn't listen to all but I love trash and garbage

I fuck with Garbage. That simple.

I rather enjoyed revisiting this, I probably wouldn't have done so without the prompt from this project so nice one

Very nice album from my least favorite era. I definitely prefer their softest side, like shown on Milk.

I vaguely knew Garbage from a few songs I heard in movie soundtracks. I didn't think I was going to like this album so much, but I did! Shirley Manson offers a beautiful vocal performance and the musical arrangements have something subtly unique. Very happy to have listened to this album.

Rock alternativo. Interesante.

4-; pretty good one, interesting melodies with really interesting solutions like in the opening track with those pauses, I like the vocals; album isn't samey, I enjoyed it

It was fun

Dope 4

Hard to fault and even harder to find a reason not to give it five stars but couldn't quite get there. Heard a lot of Kirin J Callinan guitar licks throughout

not garbage

This is a 3.5 star album. I am going 4 because I was so pumped to see them last year with Liz Phair and Alanis. Stupid pandemic.

Imagine you're a hobo and you find a whole warm Big Mac in the dumpster. It's still garbage, but you can enjoy it

I grew up watching Garbage on MTV... literally...

Contrary to popular belief, not garbage

FIVE HOURS?! I guess that's the delux edition with all the remixes. They will be interesting to hear

A very good album. Pop...punk...indie...grunge...shoelace a little bit of everything I this one, including some excellent songs. Reminds me of The Darling Buds album; Erotica, which would be a 5 star album for me but does make this list. Anyway this one's a 4 🌟

i vibe with it

I didn't expect to like it, but it was a really enjoyable album minus one point for crappy band name.

Very 90s rock, kinda liked it

The name of the band and the music they put out are at odds with each other. This album is absolutely great. A bunch of really solid tracks combined with some monster hits. While not as solid as Version 2.0, I would be able to listen to this many more times over.

Gotta love those mid 90s feelings.

Well crafted guitar rock

Good album of its time.

A classic, to say the least.

garbage and tals

Wisconsin rocks

This was certainly not garbage, in fact it was really good. I had never heard of Garbage before so i'm glad I got them today because I enjoyed this so much more than expected. It's hard for me to decide between a 3 or 4 star for this one. I'll go with a weak 4 star rating I think.

This was a cool album with some really interesting guitar work and awesome vocals by Shirley Manson

Great 90s vibe

Pretty darn solid, still sounds fresh to me.

My friend sam shoplifted this from the whsmiths where he worked for my 17th birthday

Жіночий роцк

Debut was their best album.

Enjoyed it!

Pretty good!

I’ve always enjoyed most of the singles I’ve heard from Garbage but this might be my first full album listen. It seems a lot less produced than their second album and DEFINITELY their third album which had some really candy pop singles. Definitely don’t have a problem with that. Fave tracks: “Queer” “Supervixen” “Stupid Girl”

7/10. Good, edgy rock music.

It's decent, though not super appealing to me. 7/10

Good "modern" rock

Not garbage. 🦧 A ferocious album that's both brutal and beautiful. If it was a footballer, it'd be Franck Ribery. SHACK has a cervix.

I liked “I’m Only Happy When It Rains,” when it was on the radio, but it was a time when you had to buy the entire album for one song. I never got to know the rest of the album as a result, but I will probably enjoy it. To be honest, I don’t think I would have liked this back when it came out, but I definitely see it fitting into my music tastes at times now. It suits my mood today.

MBV + NIN + ... + 90s other 90s alt rock. I like it.

Good album. A lot of recognisable tunes.

Pop bem feito para lembrar do auge da MTV Brasil.

Good album. Captures 90’s grunge

Classy 90s Love it

Kind of grungy pop. First half of album much stronger than second. Really enjoyed it for something I'd never heard before

I knew more of the songs than I thought I would! Great production but not a keeper for me.

Fucking goated

1 - Supervixen - Excellent - 👍 2 - Queer - Good - 👍 3 - Only Happy When It Rains - Good - 👍 4 - As Heaven Is Wide - Good - 👍 5 - Not My Idea - Ok - 👍 6 - A Stroke of Luck - Ok - 👍 7 - Vow - Ok - 👍 8 - Stupid Girl - Excellent - 👍 9 - Dog New Tricks - Ok - 👍 10 - My Lover's Box - Good - 👍 11 - Fix Me Now - Ok - 👍 12 - Milk - Excellent - 👍

Nostalgia

I recognized a couple of songs off this that had radio play on a local alt station back in the 90's, name Only Happy When It Rains and Stupid Girl. Enjoyed listening to the whole album. Really did As Heaven as Wide which I hadn't heard before.

Awesome album, love Shirley Manson’s voice.

Quintessential 90s alt-rock band uses quintessential 90s sounds: crunching loud-then-soft dynamics, beautiful melodies hidden in a hurricane of noise. Butch Vig knew all the sonic tricks and Shirley Manson was the perfect sexy-cool front woman. This album sounds even better now than I remembered from when it first came out.

Quality American Album! Definitely not Garbage this one *slaps thigh*

I like this album, the production sound is Nirvana-esque, obviously thanks to Butch Vig

Grungey vibes, nice to listen to, a little aggressive but overall enjoyable

Some weird songs. I especially liked Stupid Girl.

Top gems, brings me back to high school

Has not aged! Good hit singles, indie rock, super moody vocals and electronic programming too.

Presentación de Garbage, con toda la fuerza propia de un debut y ya poniendo sobre la mesa su sonido característico. Rompedor en su momento, alternativo y postgrunge, con una Manson vitamínica y potente. Nostalgia pura
