Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Nostalgia album for me so I rate pretty high.
Great album and a reminder that I need to see them live!
I've only ever heard and enjoyed the singles before, so it was no surprise to discover this is a great rock/pop album, Shirley Manson has an excellent voice.
Still sounds fresh. And Shirley Manson used to give me the horn.
I was only familiar with the radio tracks. This was pretty good. I like her vocals.
oh the 90's. this is from the golden era of MTV, this is a great album
Bängeri 90's rock, emt. Garage/alt/whatever
I'm assuming this is an iconic album for women's rights activists. I really enjoyed the stories that played along in the album.
Liked it more than I thought. Songs were fun but not overly simple
Absolutely loved the 90's grunge vibe. Felt a lot like Eve 6 with the hard cuts in the sound of the music.
Thumbs up
This is a great album I love it.
great sounding but not connecting to the lyrics. overall super well done though
I liked this album. It has I'm only happy when it rains.
Garbage
Classic 90s
It was okay. I thought it was overproduced though. That overproduction took out the rawness of Shirley Manson’s voice. I liked her album with her previous band, Angelfish better.
Enjoyable.
Good album - contains two or three of the big rock songs of the 90s. Overall, a little too much of the same thing though.
I remember listening to this album driving around Houston during high school. It's undeniably good but there was also always something about it that felt contrived. Maybe I was vaguely aware of the way the band was formed- less of a creative coming together and more of a calculated construction- but now I think my impression was due to the heavy use of sampling and innovative, plastic-sounding production techniques and sounds that were unfamiliar in the context I was listening in. Hearing it now, it's remarkable how good the album sounds and how huge the hooks are. Garbage was definitely pushing boundaries, exploiting a gap in the market for pop-centric, image forward and genre-fluid alternative rock. Butch Vig is far from unacclaimed, but the guy had a winning streak in the 90's that rivals many of the greats.
Never have really been a garbage fan but really listening to this album I could respect the guitar work and compositions
Suprised by how much I enjoyed this despite its sound. It was quite expressive and didn’t rely to much on the genres stereotypes. I don’t know if I’d listen again but was definitely interesting.
Pleasantly surprised by this, felt like an interesting mix between grunge and trip-hop. Probably wouldn't listen again but enjoyed it more than I expected to.
노래는 전체적으로 꽤 괜찮았다. Overall, the song was pretty good.
uma mistureba de subgêneros noventistas pior que nem eh mto ruim. as partes de trip hop e de rock industrial são zZzZzZzZ, MAS ainda eh bem sólido. bacaninha!!
Washes over pleasantly enough without grabbing me. RYM: N Saved a song: N
female lead rock vocalists were eating good in the 90s
Rokimpaa musaa jonku tekemisen taustalle.
Not my cup of tea. Having said that, I understand the praise, and there are some songs in the album which are absolute bangers
Good rock/pop
ya ok sure
solidan album. distorzijski alternativni rok s dobrim ženskim vokalom. prva pjesma vjerojatno najslabija, sredina solidna, a nažalost tek bih zadnju stvar, pjesmu »milk«, mogao opisati kao baš dobru. stoga jedna lijepa trojka
Garbage were fairly big over here in the post Nirvana days, their radio friendly sound and lady vocals more palatable to the Radio 1 crowd. Not scary enough to be put off by, not heavy enough to turn off the listeners also hoping to hear Wigfield and BoyzIIMen. Aside from the two big singles, there's not much here. They're not big fans of melodies, are they? There were a lot of female fronted similar bands around this time. On this evidence I'm not sure why this lot outlasted most of the others.
Surprisingly not garbage
I never really got into this when it was released, just felt a bit too Polished and poppy but in registering I think it has grown on me a little. Milk is a great track and what I seen as sterile in the 90’s has sort of transformed to competence and quality. It’s not an essential for me bit I can now understand why it went platinum 3.3
It's fine. Good tracks but not really my thing
When I first heard Garbage’s self-titled debut album in 1995, I thought the name was a bit over the top, but somehow it hit the nail on the head. I’ve since realized that my taste in music has changed in this regard over the past 30 years, and today I find “Garbage” quite tolerable. I also remember that Garbage sounded a bit like the Smashing Pumpkins to me, and I can partly confirm that impression. Aside from the obviously different vocal styles, however, the two bands differ in the way they create boredom: While the Smashing Pumpkins simply layer so many tracks on top of each other until everything sounds the same, the Garbage sound simply lacks any sense of tension. In summary, this is a very mediocre alternative rock album.
6- / 10
I am aware of and slightly familiar with Garbage - and have 4 songs by them liked on Spotify. 2 of those are from this album - "Only Happy When it Rains" and "Stupid Girl". I've never dug deeper than some of the radio hits. So I'm definitely interested in discovering more. Thoughts after listening 3 times ... Oh yeah, I recognize "Queer" also from the radio back in the day. Pretty good. "As Heaven is Wide", "Stroke of Luck", "Vow", "My Lover's Box" are all pretty good. The keyboard part of "Milk" reminds me of Talking Heads. I like that one. The whole time I was listening I kept thinking that Poe from the 90s did this kind of music better. I still wonder why Poe never got the acclaim and popularity. I know she had some major legal issues but it seems like the stuff she did release should be more popular. I ended up liking 8 of the songs - all of the ones mentioned above. Excited that I got to add 6 more "new to me" songs because of this project. I will add, all of these songs are "pretty good" but none of them would be considered my favorite songs or anything like that - but I will enjoy them when they come up on my playlists. Liked songs on Spotify: 8/12 Rating: 3/5

Good
Cool they’ve got some funky off normal beat stuff; nothing jumped out as needing to save though
I was not excited when I saw this was the album of the day, as I was not a fan of this band back in the day. The hits from this album were played constantly on MTV and radio and I got sick of them pretty quickly. Before listening yesterday, I was trying to figure out what I didn't like about them and I decided I think I am just not a fan of Shirley Manson as a frontwoman. [One hour later...] I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would! Whatever it was that bothered me in 1995-97 does not seem to bother me anymore.
Wanted to roll the eyes at yet another 90s alternative rock album but As Heave Is Wide made me sit up in my seat. Also loved the use of the Train in Van drums on Stupid Girl. Wikipedia says they wanted to make unpalatable sounds palatable and they mostly succeed at it. Solid 3.5, this era of rock inexplicably continues to grow on me.
stupid giiiiiiiiiiirl...
5/10 I didn’t care about it at all nothing caught my attention but it could be a cool background song in a movie
I always kind of regarded this as a very-of-its-era 90s pop album. It is exactly what I thought it would be: a mostly mediocre 90s pop album with some rock and shoegaze influences. This is incredibly commercial by nature, with a strong emphasis on hooks and that feminine angst that was incredibly popular for a brief moment in the 1990s(see Alanis Morrisette for another example of this). I guess it belongs on the list as an example of the musical mainstream of the 90s, and it does have some legitimately good songs towards the back half, but it's ultimately just an example of the popular sound of its era. The band is more or less a footnote in modern music, and this didn't really have any staying power. This album is the #7 ranked album of 22 1995 albums. Other 1995 albums rated by me: The Bends(1/22)-4 What's the Story Morning Glory(2/22)-4 Jagged Little Pill(3/22)-4 Foo Fighters(5/22)-4 Different Class(6/22)-2 Me Against the World(11/22)-3 Exit Planet Dust(13/22)-3
A delightful romp with the band through some excellent punk/ pop, love how it sounds before the more produced sound they got known for as their popularity blossomed
This whole thing is a slick gimmick, courtesy of Butch Vig, who commodified his production, added a female voice akin to Courtney Love and sold millions of records to brainless drones who loved the sound he helped create on classic grunge albums that actually meant something. Hot Garbage, indeed.
I've seen Garbage live twice and lived through their 90s heyday when this came out and I still can't seem to rate them any higher than a 3. I do appreciate what Shirley Manson did and how it affected current music. There is no Billie Eilish without Shirley Manson.
Überdurchschnittlich guter 90s pop
This Is Not My Idea Of A Good Time 1001 Albums Generator 307 (6/7/2026) Favs: Supervixen Only Happy When It Rains Vow Least Fav: Dog New Tricks
Great for being released on my birthday, as well as being a fun grungy 90's rock record.
Pretty good. Don't have that much to say but I like the mix of 90s electronic with rock. I can't really think of many others doing that There are some parts where I wish it was a bit noisier in a shoegaze way like Stupid Girl. That would've completed the fuzzy bass on tracks like Dog New Tricks quite well 3.5 Highlights: Only Happy When It Rains, A Stroke of Luck
I mean, it’s fine. There’s a song I knew on it. But no better than fine
Good memories.
Not particularly unique or adventurous but solid music. I wouldn't rate this as one of my favorite albums but it's fun enough to be worth a listen.
This was garbage for sure.
I didn't love it, but it's definitely solid. Just doesn't really ever do much. Perfectly fine album. I wouldn't mind listening to this album again.
Having a hard time getting myself to listen to this all the way through, which says something. A couple of big hits for them here. Very Pop candy, even when talking about misery. The wall of sound leaves me feeling tired, even on the songs I enjoy.
Quite enjoyable but no great shakes
Really good 90s album. My Lover's Box and Not My Ideas were cool new tracks for me, and Only Happy When it Rains holds up well (even if the Doughboys Doubles over the years have changed its meaning a bit for me). Came close to 4 stars, but didn't get all the way there.
Everything was alright. But then the trip-hop Milk hit me at the end. What a great finish.
I really liked some of this album, I do remember Garbage - Shirley Manson rings a bell, not sure what I was into at the time, 🤔
Maybe a little better than a 3.
3.25
Not bad I guess. Wouldn't queue for them
This was way poppier and dance-y than I expected. Having never really listened to them much outside of a few singles, I had thought Garbage were closer to grunge, punk, or heavier alt rock than they are on here. The songs are still fairly solid, but suffer from that for me. I think my main issue is that the whole thing seems to lack depth. It's like they wanted to make something cool, so they went with what they thought would have that effect for each track rather than making something more real or inspired. And yeah, some of it is cool. A lot of the songs are catchy and have a fun hook. But they often feel shallow and uninteresting to me. It's a little too pop-like for my taste, and it doesn't really pull me in. Like it's something to enjoy with your brain disengaged rather than something to put your attention into. All that said, it was still a decent listen for the most part. I don't think it needed to be 50+ minutes long, but there wasn't really anything I'd call bad here. It just wasn't anything special to me. Overall: 2.8/5
Decent. Queer is amazing.
I remember this record meaning a lot to girls in my high school at the time. And honestly, it’s really solid. The production is top notch; it sounds amazing. I’d also say that most of the songs are at least a little catchy. It turns out, I like this record a good deal better than I originally thought. But honestly, I’ll never come back to it. It IS a solid record, and there are at least a handful of songs I’d happily listen to again. But it didn’t change anything for me in terms of long term appreciation. I love the nostalgia of listening to it, but I’m cool after a spin. Solid, but not amazing, unfortunately. 7.5/10
estuve en un limbo entre si era una banda genérica o si tenían propuesta, la que más me gustó fue milk
Not remarkable ,it was background music to me
OK music, forgettable though. Maybe in 1995 this was very fresh, but for my current 2026 palette it's just not interesting enough to stand out. I'd have loved for this to completely suck, just so I could sign off with 'this was garbage'.
I don't know - this one just didn't land well on my ears.
-Rock -kreative Motive -schöne Vocals
Great
Svag trea.
Probably need to review my rating system. This is a solid three, but I think I need to downgrade some 60s rock that I was actually bored by.
An enjoyable listen, some songs I quite liked. But nothing exceptional as a whole album.
Not garbage. Some gold, but also lots of beige
I recall these songs in the background playing on the radio a lot. Never got too close to them, but fun hear them them again.
Good for what it is. Some classic '90s jams well executed
A brooding, but up beat 90s alternative album that has some hits on it. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Highlights: "Only Happen When it Rains" and "Stupid Girl"
Basic pop rock with basic female vocal. Not great but not terrible as well
I didn't really get Garbage at the time, and I'm not sure I do now. This was ok
Album 196. Garbage (https://open.spotify.com/album/3gcPVCFXfShcfVtFdMBXNG?si=4Fogx58LTmezI50bQQwfLQ) — Garbage (1995) Unexpectedly solid alternative rock album, but not outstanding. 3/5 Liked: — Only Happy When It Rains — A Stroke of Luck
It's okay, some good songs, a lot of filler, very average 90s post grunge music
I felt like a bad bitch listening to this album 💅
I was in Middle School when this album came out, and I had both this and their 2.0 album. So, I'm a little biased, but I think they're pretty good. There's nothing outstanding happening here, but it's just good alternative rock and very 90s.
Garbage by garbage kind of sounds like garbage, but I kind of like the sound of the garbage. I don't know how to rank this album, it sounds bad, but yet I still enjoy it on some level.
Solid enough debut album from Garbage. It's a bit on the forgettable side though. The vocals fall pretty flat for me, guitars sound generic and there's nothing truly adventurous here. I mean, it sounds good, but not terribly exciting. Even the singles off this album are just "ok." This one gets a 3, some ok songs but I'm really just not interested.
Pretty fun, not great but solid.
It ws better then i gave it credit for in 90 whatever. Its fine.
Good album, but not sure I see it being top 1001 of all time though.
Strange one, at times it’s very easy to get lost in the noisy grooves and dirty guitar tones, but it also can come across as a rather cynical commercial construction. Still it’s mostly fun and energetic and does a good job of occasionally having some moodier tracks as well like “Queer” and “A Stroke of Luck”. In general the album is very solid, the vocals are decent, the instrumentals sound great and are interesting enough. I think thought that it’s all a bit generic? There’s nothing that really stands out enough to make me want to come back to it, despite it being generally enjoyable. Strong 3
Surprisingly good, enjoyed the music & vocals mix. Good listening experience.
Tough one. It’s not a 3 but it’s not a 4. This seemed like a real exercise in “steal like an artist.” It wasn’t offensively derivative of anything necessarily, but almost every song reminded me of another artist. I just don’t think this album offers anything that a playlist of Pumpkins, MBV, Sonic Youth, Hole etc wouldn’t cover.

I was hoping this album would be bad so i could say its name is spot on for the quality of the music but, it’s not :P Really good album, very diverse.
Some good singles but the rest of the album wasn't as good as I hoped. 3/5
Typ. En trea
Not Garbage, but also not that interesting. Lots of indie fuzz and an overall grungey sound but basically it was slightly edgy/melancholic pop music with a load of fuzz over the top. Not a huge fan of the vocals, just sounded like the singer would rather be elsewhere. Had some moments, and a couple of tracks were decent jams as background, but a whole album of it was kinda boring. Listenable though so going to go with a 3.
I enjoyed this album. I would have given it a 4 if each song did something more interesting or were shorter. Each song feels distinct but with each of them being 4 minutes I hoped they'd figure out something in their runtime rather than repeating flat melodies. No song has that moment where they manage to build on the individual pieces and make something special Solid 3
I liked this album, but PERSONALLY it has a huge problem, Shirley Manson's voice is horrible, TO ME, she doesn't sing well. As I was listening to it, the sound of the project was becoming progressively more and more "dirty". I think that these are all my thoughts, maybe the more I listen to this album, the more of a fan I'll become, idk, maybe it's just not for me at all.
it was okay 3.5
Not my genre but not horrible
Not garbage at all.
Nostalgic.
Decent 3/5
It reminds me of that one scene in Scott Pilgrim where Ivy and her band play Black Sheep. Most of all, that scene has always struck me as someone doing a stellar job at appearing cool, sexy and mysterious, but not per se at making stellar music. After all, I'm the type of dork who would prefer Crash and the Boys. Anyway, this band is all Black Sheep and zero Crash and the Boys, and I definitely prefer my alt-rock to be more Crash-y.
Ni slabo
This isn’t bad. I really like her voice and the music is decent but it feels a little dated. It’s probably about as good as The Black Album.
You're really asking for criticism naming yourself Garbage. Also, this album cover. Yikes. You would think I would like a 90s female-fronted rock band, but I didn't ever like any of their singles. I'm willing to revise my judgment though. I do like that 'Stupid Girl' reminds me of the Cold song by the same name, which is peak Rock Countdown material (not to say it's good). The album was fine. No opinions revised. Highlight: 'Fix Me Now'
None
Decent album. I’d heard a few tracks in the past, but never the full album. It sounds like a mix of Pink and Smashing Pumpkins. Pretty good overall.
Nothing wrong with this, but nothing great about it either. I could not listen to this more than this album though. Even this was perhaps one or two songs too many for me.
3.5
Yeah fine I guess. Very plain white bread
This album plays like an encapsulation of ‘90s alternative — grunge, trip-hop, indie guitar rock, electronica, etc. There are some good tracks — I like the slinky riff of “Queer,” and “Vow” has a nice groove — but overall it doesn’t grab me by the lapels and yank me in close.
Would have given it a 2 but I love rain and Only Happy When It Rains is one of my top-five rain songs (up there with Famous Blue Raincoat and Paranoid Android) (lol)
I'd only heard the hits, so didnt know what to expect. Pretty solid, though of its era.
Favorite track(s): Supervixen, Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, Milk Not usually my thing, but far from being garbage.
That was a nice listen. This project has basically just become an exercise in nostalgia for me. I have this album and haven't listened in forever, like many albums I have. There are a couple of great tracks, I always adored 'Queer', it doesn't really sound like anything else. I've enjoyed these memories.
This has a lot of the right ingredients, some good song construction. For me the audio quality is very of the time and hurts it. Not really for me. I did listen to this on a rainy depressing day which lined up.
interesting, surprisingly - would be a high 3/5 if that existed - but i doubt i'd listen to the album again anyway
Very well-produced. It's mostly not my vibe but I respect it.
ok
Milk şarkısı güzeldi meh işte bella swansal
Fun album, few standout individual tra ks which isnt per se necessary in a great album but doesnt help. The albums is also incredible bloated at 21 tracks with many hitting 5 plus mins feels a slog in places to get through. Overall however i do love the 90s alt rock vibe of the album and respect the influence the front woman had on what would go on to be some of my fave artists... Paramore, evanescence, Florence. Personally however barring the female front woman i dont feel this brings much of unique value to set it apart from contemporaries
Not for me, quite 90's slow indy/rock. Slightly cool but just not my kind of cool.
This was some solid 90s rock I hadn’t heard of before. Always appreciate a women led band of this era. It was good but no real standouts. High 3, probably a 4 if I spend more time with it
Good '90s alternative rock. A couple of big hits land really well and the rest of the material is very good.
It's ok, going to go back and listen more so that says something ...
Cool bad with cool roots. First I’d heard of them. Nice female lead voice too!
I like it. It's grunge, not so much my style but is good
Better than average 90s alternative. Even few really good songs. not a 4 though. 3.5.
Pretty good
A few familiar ones that I enjoyed. Not bad, not outstanding
Pretty good! Faves were Supervixen and ofc, Only Happy When It Rains!
особо не расслушала (хотя половину реально знаю и опять задумалась, как синглы оказываются на радио, кто кому платит), поэтому всё показалось в среднем одинаковым и чрезмерно готичным
Supervixen Only Happy When it Rains Fix Me Now 3 1/2
first listen fun but nothing special
Supervixen - 3/5 Queer - 2/5 Only happy when it rains - 3/5 As heaven is wide - 1/5 Not my idea - 4/5 A stroke of luck - 3/5 Vow - 3/5 Stupid girl- 2/5 Dog new tricks - 4/5 My lover's box - 3/5 Fix me now - 3/5 Milk - 4/5
Hard shoegaze? Lo-fi pop rock? When you want something that looks a bit like a pink band, but also that you can have a nap during?
For the most part, this album is largely forgettable. You've got the three hits: "Queer", "Only Happy When It Rains", and "Stupid Girl". Thank you MTV. Outside of those three, most of it all kinda blends together. Crunchy guitars, electronic mixed in, a little edgy, but not quite enough to bite in. Then you get to "Milk", where Shirley floats in this trip-hop bliss, enticing you to vibe with her. They could have made a whole album of just this and I would have been happy. Butch, you screwed the pooch on this one. My Rating: 3/5
90's alternative was just a whole lot of blah. Not horrible, not great, just melodic heavy guitars not doing anything particularly interesting, and paired with moody lyrics. It was a formula that worked okay on the song level, but led to albums that were competent but not great. Record labels saw $$$ in repeating this formula. "Alternative" was mainstream, not like the 80s where college radio stations played bands that commercial radio saw as having little potential. Not to pick on Garbage, there are some decent songs on this album, but it fits this 90s alternative formula to a tee.
This, Elastica Try to spot the difference Not much. That's OK
My superficial rating base on sound. Track 1 - five. Track 2 - six. track 3 - five. Track 4 - nine. Track 5 - seven. Track 6 - seven. Track 7 - six. Track 8 - five. Track 9 - nine. Track 10 - six. Track 11 - seven. Track 12 - six.
Wish it was more "snotty"
Meh. Average 90s grunge
This is a pretty cool-sounding album. It fuses traditional alternative rock with pop and noise elements and tad bit of industrial music. Shirley Manson's vocals are top notch even if some of the songs instrumentally are a bit boring. I am fan of noisy music with solid pop hooks, so this one was easier than most new music to listen to. I believe this just yet another of those albums where it will grow on you. Highlight Song/s: "Supervixen", "As Heaven is Wide", "Not My Idea" and "Vow"
The 90s are often stereotyped as neons and smiley faces and see through technology, but listening to this album…this is really what the 90s sounded like. It was alternative and a grunge. It wasn’t really what I was personally listening to in that decade, but I heard this and was instantly transported back to 1995.
I’m glad I gave this album a second chance. I enjoyed the listen but unsure I can quite identify the mood where I’d want to revisit it in the future. Cool sound if no discernible ‘bangers’ identified.
This was surprisingly good, but also strange. The dissonant lead lines and changes between sections in seemingly different keys took away from what is a really cool sounding album. The guitar tones, the production, all very good and complex. I can hear a lot of my bloody valentine and nine inch nails in some of this, but the production definitely elevates it above what other grunge acts were doing at the time.
I have almost zero opinion of this album. It's fine
Happy When it Rains and Stupid Girl got played a lot and are not bad. Another not great, but not terrible album
Pretty great for a debut album from 1994. I particularly like the synth choices and guitar. I do want a bit more from it, however. The poppier songs would be pretty fun and easy to try at karaoke, but also I enjoy the moody atmosphere it projects overall quite a bit. I wonder if I would prefer the non-remastered version. omg I just noticed they remastered the album image for it too. Anyway, a for sure pick if I ever got the urge to collect cassettes. Stupid Girl is my favorite, like most other people.
d shirley manson gseht iwie mega cool uus supervixen hihihihihihihi oke no en coole ahfang aber isch auchli ah mier verbii queer isch denn grad chli andersch uhhh d gitarre im refrain vo stroke of luck isch sehr coolio ouh scho fertig das seit vlt gnueg uus hahahaha milk isch na cool gsi zum abschluss aber jaa bö? chan wenig degeg aber au wenig defür sege
Not exceptional but not offensive either.
Oh I liked this way more than I though I would - very 2000s cool tv show vibes
interesting. obviously very 90s. dog new tricks was my fav
I like this. Good female vocalist. I’ll listen again.
No. 381/1001 Supervixen 4/5 Queer 3/5 Only Happy When It Rains 3/5 As Heaven Is Wide 3/5 Not My Idea 3/5 A Stroke of Luck 4/5 Vow 4/5 Stupid Girl 3/5 Dog New Tricks 4/5 My Lover's Box 3/5 Fix Me Now 4/5 Milk 3/5 Average: 3,42 Pretty good album.
Great production quality, decent music but nothing groundbreaking. 3 - deserves to be on this list
Good
It was a nice listen. A bit more electronic/synth sounds than I expected. I almost liked the vocals more to the instrumentals.
When Butch Vig was getting a band together, I was always going to check it out. I was less curious when I heard he’d recruited a singer from Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, a band who had never excited me. Once they started to release music, I was basically out, and while I would hear all the singles on the radio, I never bought any of it. I couldn’t understand why they had decided that Garbage would sound the way they did. It just seemed like it was already dated, seemed that basically everything they did was derivative of something else. Musically I thought they didn’t do much that Curve hadn’t already done better, I didn’t think Manson’s vocals were particularly notable, nor did I feel that they were doing much more lyrically than peddling angst to vulnerable goth-curious youths. This is the first time I’m hearing the debut album in full and it’s…fine. The best things I can say about it are that it wasn’t particularly annoying to listen to, and the quality of the album tracks was actually decent rather than a major drop off from the singles. So, a competent album of pop dressed as alt rock but in no way innovative like I would have been expecting with Butch Vig involved.
Solid alternative rock effort. Has it's length unfortunately.
They've got a sound aesthetic and execute it well. Butch vig shit.
I cannot nail down my thoughts on Garbage. They are equal parts fascinating and frustrating. They really go for it when they meld heavy electronics with rock music and dark vocals. Some of it threads the needle and is actually pretty good and interesting. Other parts of it are confusing and a little irritating. Their production is over the top and Shirley Manson seems to exude a certain attitude that makes this album feel like it is tied to a specific time period. It's a little try-hard but something about it mostly works here on their debut album I guess. They are a maligned artist for me but I can't really explain why without just throwing out random thoughts and seeing what sticks. I would totally understand hearing someone hated this just as much as I would get why someone absolutely loved this. I wouldn't say that the album Garbage went down smoothly but I think I mostly enjoyed it for what it was. In a certain sense I feel like I should check them out further, but at the same time I think additional exposure will have diminishing returns and any enjoyment I get from them would wane. I'll always have respect Garbage as one of the strangest selections for a Bond theme ever so at least they have that going for them. They'll get constant listens from me for The World Is Not Enough which might be just about the amount of Garbage I need in my life. 2.89 stars
Not for me
Just scratched in a 3 but tempted to give it a 2. Its mid at best
I actually kinda liked it until for some reason random beeps and boops started playing out of rhythm in the last few songs. I thought I was going crazy
Pretty fun album, that sadly suffers from those standard 90s issues. Which means vocals which feel like intentionally poorly done, and absolutely atrocious mixing. They did some cool things added some industrial guitar sounds which was pretty neat to hear.
jeg er ikke kjent med garbage i det hele tatt!! // gøy, dette er det jeg assosierer med mallpunk. hva nå enn det betyr. høydepunkt: Queer, A Stroke of Luck, Stupid Girl,
It was not garbage, but I probably won’t listen again. A few good tracks.
Definitely not garbage, more along the lines of recycling or compost in my opinion. Enjoyed it, but a little forgettable. Some stick outs were Only Happy When it Rains, and Stupid Girl.
This definitely sounds like an album made by a band of record producers. I remember hearing Garbage a lot on modern rock radio when I was a kid, and I thought they were very cool but this was back when you needed to buy the CD if you really wanted to get into a band. If I had bought this CD any time between 5th and 8th grade, I think I would have fallen in love with Garbage. Now, as an adult, they sound like a pretty good representation of hi fidelity 90s radio rock, but I don't have the ability to fall for their angsty cool anymore. Overall, some good rock songs on here with a healthy dose of experimental special fx and drum loops -- and some plodding mid songs that don't really go anywhere.
Not for me. Couple of decent tracks but mostly uninspiring.
Better than I remember!
Lindo, movido. No me pareció una locura
Garbage (1995) - Supervixen (7.9/10) - Queer (8.9/10) - Only Happy When It Rains (6.8/10) - As Heaven Is Wide (7.1/10) - Not My Idea (8/10) - A Stroke Of Luck (5.8/10) - Vow (8/10) - Stupid Girl (7.5/10) - Dog New Tricks (7.5/10) - My Lover's Box (5/10) - Fix Me Now (5.4/10) - Milk (6.8/10) Overall: Very 90s! I like, I do not love... Sound got a little tiring. Grade: C Liked: 4/12 were added to library!
This album is fine, it's nothing special. 2.9/5
not GOOOD not bad
It's okay, very mid
no strong thoughts. felt alternative but in a kind of commercial way, although i still enjoyed
Pretty decent.
Pretty good.
Really enjoyed
This reminds me of a hungover Sunday lunchtime at someone's house after a party in a dreary town in the north of England - I imagine that's because that was where I heard it before. I don't particularly want to return to a 90s hangover up north and so I would prefer not to listen to this album again. It's a good album but a bit melancholic for me.
I think I might be a fan!
A really solid album, I was surprised how the lead-in to super vixen, the first track, came right back to me. I probably haven't listened to this full album since it came out, but a lot of it holds up. My preference now is for a tighter experience, so I'd probably skip a few consistently
It'd be funny if the album was bad and I could be like, "At least they got the name right!" But no, it's good.
I would describe this album as a steady state of listenable. The instrumentals go just far enough to be slightly interesting and the singing is imperfect in an intentional manner. Nothing truly popped out to me. I enjoyed the fuzzy guitars and reverb laced samples. Nonetheless, I feel that Garbage is just a watered down version of MBV.
2.5 stars I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would, although I was expecting to be utterly bored. I was somewhat into Garbage when their second album came out, although never enough to listen to en entire album. I thought it would be dated and repetitive. But the melodies weren’t too bad, and it wasn’t super repetitive. I wouldn’t say I loved it but I wouldn’t hate listening again.
3 out of 5. This album has aged well, and from the last song on this album I can see how they got the chance to do a James Bond opener a few years later.
I guess it's been at least 20 years since I listened to this. There was a chance that this sort of music wouldn't have become stadium rock, but that's what it is.
There's something a bit calculated about Garbage that makes them hard for me to love, but those calculations did result in a couple of bangers.
It’s ok, couple good songs
Nostalgic but that doesnt mean I like it
Good energy
ghbrjkmytymrj
Fun trip down memory lane. Almost every song was good, if maybe not great.
Aiighhhyyyh
sounds like something i would listen to in 9th grade!
Very good album kinda riot girl but more vocalized and clean.
Wow - talk about a sound for a very specific time and place! This is one of the most mid-90s things you'll ever run into in your life. Garbage were ahead of the curve a bit in the US, I think. In the post-grunge environment there weren't many bands mixing electronica and heavy rock. There is also quite a bit of pop, but that's undercut by Shirley Manson's dark lyrics. Speaking of which. Another reviewer referred to her as Garbage's version of Courtney Love. AS IF COURTNEY LOVE COULD TIE SHIRLEY MANSON'S THIGH HIGH DOC MARTEN'S. Give me a break. The singles here are great, though I find "Queer" to be annoyingly repetitive. And a couple of the album tracks are nice - but - what was shocking to me is the quality of the bonus tracks (yes, even after listening to this over-long album I still gave the bonus tracks a shot). Why some, if not MOST, of these were left off in favor of whats on the album I have no idea. "#1 Crush" is excellent, as are most of the others. My frustration with this album came with hearing several different versions of "Only Happy When It Rains," instead of something new, and the b-sides provide that in spades. I wish I could give this 4 stars, but I can only manage THREE STARS
3 stars - 90s ambient sad girl music, i like very much. several great songs
I didn't listen to the whole thing
Nada de especial. Acho que as primeiras 3/4 músicas são as melhores do álbum. Tornou-se um bocado chato quando cheguei a metade. Não deixa de se ouvir bem e não deixa de ser interessante a mistura de rock/grunge com pop.
Garbage wasnt actually so garbageish, BUT the mix of the first track was indeed hot shit garbage. I am not sure if it's remaster's fault or not but fortunetaly it was better in the rest of the album. It was nice, but quite long. I am not sure about some of the tracks too. Some great, some quite boring.
3/5 ok grunge stuff need more listen
*Talking to the 90s George Bush* Sir, there's been a second singer named Manson *George throws up in my lap*
Inoffensive but generic
Nothing blew me away but enjoyed it all the way through
This is a good album. I honestly thought I'd like it more, but it's actually a bit dated.
It's ok, I just think I heard it too much in the 90s.
Garbage. Lots of familiar stuff.
I knew a few songs in this. It was good. I like Shirley Manson’s voice and I’m always nostalgic for the 90’s.
Only Happy When It Rains is an old favorite, and this was a good opportunity to listen to the album all the way through and read more about its production.
Love a bit of Brit Pop. Especially when it has this amount of attitude. Good songs, particularly Stupid Girl, Queer and Supervixen.
Not exactly my thing, but was listenable, for it's type it was quite good.
Listened Before: No The really interesting and new production outweighs the grungier parts I don't like. Listened to this one twice because I wasn't sure how I felt after the first pass. Locking in a 3.
The album rates itself! Just kidding, its alright. It very much feels like it fits in perfectly with the time period that it was released it. I like it sonically, but lyrically it doesn't really do it for me.
Good but nothing stood out other than “stupid girl” and kinda liked “butterfly collector”
Like it, but after the first couple songs I expected a little more. Liked the vocals, but the music in the background got old. 3/5
That beautiful time capsule where grunge was losing steam and Nu Metal was on the verge of ruining everything. Garbage came to rock.
Not my favourite 90s band but not a bad album.
Never really listened to any Garbage outside of the 4 hits they had. I didn't know what to expect, but this album was quite good.
Good
3.5
Brooding, classic alternative rock. It oozes 90's. Favorite track: Only Happy When it Rains
Some big songs but mostly underwhelming
I liked this more than I expected to. Wild since I never listened to it back when it came out.
If I'm being objective, this is a 2. But I loved it when I was in high school, so I'm bumping it up.
Despite the name it sounded alright.
Definitely not my usual wheelhouse, but, surprisingly, I liked this. Shirley Manson has a great and powerful presence on the album. Not one that I would visit regularly, though. Confession: I never finished listening to the whole album.
Good album. Grunge era sound that still holds up but nothing extraordinary
I was squarely in the time and age where if Garbage had caught my ear and made an impact it would have. I can see why the radio hits were picked, they are the best songs on a mediocre album.
It feels like the kind of album I would’ve been obsessed with if I were a teenager in the mid 90s sexy, a little grungy, and in between alt rock and pop. My standout: Stupid Girl, Supervixen
Not garbage
Helt ok men lite interessant rock. Stupid Girl har jeg hørt før og er ganske bra.
Likte mye av det, gled godt. Noe gjenkjente jeg, annet oppdaget jeg.
#6/1001 🇺🇸🏴 Takes me back to my last day of 6th form, buying a very ltd edition copy of Vow. It was a hideous sounding press in a cool metal sleeve. I collected all the other singles too, in equally cool sleeves but got a bit bored of the album and gave it away to a girl that i fancied. Relistening, the singles sound great still, Shirley's vocals are superb and the production is on point. So, i guess it maybe just seems a bit false and contrived. Is that because i pinned too much on NME or Melody Maker reviews at the time? Garbage always reminded me of more poppy version of Curve, who i absolutely loved, although i doubt that we'll see them on this list. I'm going for a very solid 3 stars here. Enjoyed relistening twice today but not likely to rush back. Best tracks for me are Milk, Only Happy When It Rains and Stupid Girl.
It’s right there in the album name. J/k, this is fine. I never got into Garbage personally, and my opinion hasn’t changed. I like her voice, but a lot of the music felt generic and commercial.
6/10
'twas okay
3.75
This might be the grungiest grunge album I have ever heard. Favorite track was Queer
Fun album. Needs to listen to it again to decide if I like to add to my playlists or not.
I listened to this album a lot when it came out, so this was tinged with nostalgia. Very 90s, well produced with a satisfying blend of teen angst and adult sophistication.
Not really my thing but not terrible either, never would've listened to this of my own accord. Queer was my fav on this album. Would listen again.
Easy pleasy Toe tapper No hits here but no ear grinders either
Not as bad as Neil Young. Got a bit same and rackety after a while. Do really like Stupid Girl but obvs knew that one already. Have liked the song Milk
A good, solid 90’s album. Not a regular rotation album, but a good reminder that I also like this more alternative end of the pop/rock spectrum.
Before listening: first impressions, it’s cutesy, never heard of them though. I like the cover art and the album was released on my birthday (1995) so that’s cool! They toured with the smashing pumpkins so I’m gonna say it’s somewhere in that range? During Listening: feminine, grunge, rage, my kind of music. It feels very Wet Leg with the beats but with a 90’s sound to it After listening: I did enjoy this throwback, very of the times. And I always appreciate a female forward lead! Before listening: 0/12 songs After listening: 2/12 songs.
This is an album that I have always wanted to like more than I do. The type of music is right up my alley and I think the songs are well-composed and played, but there's a muted shell that surrounds the music. Shirley Manson never exhibits the vocal range or power to provide a contrast to the instruments, which may be by design (she's often buried in the mix as well). On the whole, I think the album is fine. I don't think there's a bad song here, and there are several that I think would be favorites ("As Heaven Is Wide," "Queer," "Vow," "My Lover's Box") if something about them was allowed to stand out more, either Manson or the instruments. And that's the crux of it. I understand this is strictly a me thing, but I have a hard time just sitting and enjoying this album when I can't stop thinking how much better it could have been.
For me this album started off not great but finished strong. The vocals and instrumentals were good but it was the writing that kind of made me cringe. But as the album progressed it got better. Overall, the album is okay with some songs with replay ability.
Good - some fun songs that are more gritty sounding but some more slow and produced songs that I liked too.
As someone who lived through the 90’s, this might be the most 90’s thing ever. The smell of indie discos comes rushing back. The singles are bangers though
It’s been a long time since I listened to this record. For no particular reason, Garbage just fell off my radar. This is a solid record, especially for debut album. Reading the history of the album after my first listen, this makes sense, this was not the first rodeo for any of these artists. Essentially a mashup of several bands I enjoyed (Smashing Pumpkins, Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana), I was bound to either love or hate this album. On this relisten, I mostly found myself thinking the former. Storied producer Butch Vig [Nevermind (Nirvana), Gish (Smashing Pumkins), Dirty (Sonic Youth)] intentionally created a band that meshed genres and he had the connections and production experience to pull it off. These are clearly all fantastic musicians, and I quite like Manson’s voice. My only complaint is that the album sometimes veers a little too strongly into too familiar pop territory. The more experimental tracks make up for it though and also helped make this album hold up decades later. Now that Garbaqe is back on my radar again, I’m excited to spend some more time with the band to see how their sound has evolved over the past few decades. Epiphanies like this are what makes this project fun.
chill. rock. everywhere. crying?
A cool frontwoman, an accomplished producer, and a couple of other dudes. Somehow, for me, usually less than the sum of their parts. Middleweight grunge-pop. The radio his are very good; the rest, never bad, never amazing.
GOING IN: No strong feelings LISTENED WHILE: walking the dog FAMILIARITY: Know a few songs SKIP RATE: Skipped the odd one REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Fair enough BODY'S VERDICT: Statue mode FAVOURITE TRACK: My Rating: 2.5 Not my thing but not unlistenable.
Two minds on this one. Positive take: Shirley Manson is a superstar, and this is a fairly excellent set of pop songs. Negative take: This is what happens when you get 3 big name producers in a room together. It sounds grown in a lab, or the best result of a carefully curated set of AI prompts looking for a perfectly 1995 sounding mix of alt rock, electronica and 80s Goth pop. Overall verdict: I still can't connect with this, all the ingredients are there, mixed together a different way this would be right up my alley.
I am really enjoying waiting each day for a new surprise album, it’s like opening a gift everyday with excitement. Some of the albums so far are not my cup of tea, but I am liking the experience of wonder and discovering, I can definitely appreciate the intention of the artist and I am really enjoying some of the songs so far that I would have never listened to if it was not for this journey.
Female lead! Didn’t expect that :) Grunge rock I think? Pretty cool. Might need a second or third listen to really get into it.
3.2 coulda been half the length and better
Not really my thing/era/genre, but I actually didn't hate this. By the end I felt like it was getting pretty repetitive though. Queer was pretty funny because I initially thought they were using a more modern definition of that word, lol. My favorite was Only happy when it rains.
good for the most part some for me
It's fun
A very coherent rock album. Not usually my prefered genre, so even though I overall liked it, I probrably wouldn't listen to it as a whole again. Still, I really liked Only happy when it rains and stupid girl, they are going straight to my playlist
Fine. Clean. Safe, despite its obstinance.
Overall, not a bad album, there are a couple of songs that are relatively popular, and it's alright having it in the background.
Not the biggest fan, but a very interesting combination of experimental rock-ish sounds
Pretty good, but nothing I'd really come back to.
pleasant and nostalgic
Decent. Better than anticipated with some unexpected edges.
It was ok. That’s all I have for it.
We're the hex girls, and we're gonna put a spell on you . This was tragically 90s alt but not in a bad way. I loved Not My Idea as a concept and a few songs like Vow had a really cool sound. 3.5 rounded down
Low 3/5, but 3/5
Really liked it. I was worried it would be repetitive, but most of the songs felt different and from each other and crossed genres. I’d never heard of the band or album, so this was a good surprise
Not for me
Début album from Garbage. A good start but the following one was much better. Well at least it got me listening to their discography all day long so good recommandation.
I can't explain why but this gave me big Fred Jones from the live action Scooby Doo movie vibes
Good amount of hits and it sort of meandered otherwise
Sounds fine bit I couldn't catch a feeling.
Good for a workout
As far as albums go, this one is solid. As far as albums in the 90s go, this one is less solid. There are so many great options from the early-mid 90s that I'd have a hard time going to Garbage (although this is hardly trash). Heavily reminds me of Smashing Pumpkins.
Good album. Essentially a dance album disguised as an alternative rock album. Lush arrangements (great headphone listening). Modern sound but with production elements that include loops, mellotron, and preverb effects. It clearly helps to have production wizard Butch Vig in your band. Shirley Manson's vocals are mesmerizing. One second sexy smooth, the next second urgent and powerful. Hits: "Only Happy When it Rains," "Queer" and "Stupid Girl." Other standouts: "Not My Idea," "Supervixen," "Milk." Favorite: "As Heaven is Wide."
