Good good

buenardópolis 8/10

Surprisingly excellent, especially production.

Contrary to the record/band name..this is pretty good

Solid album, lots of hits, love Shirley Manson. Subtracting 1 star because it's somewhat manufactured.

This album has that same sweet spot combo of alt rock and post punk that that elastics album did. This one was more alt rock and pop leaning than the elastics album though. I liked this quite a bit and only happy when it rains is probs my fav

I hadn’t listened to this in years, despite being a fan back in the day. I was delighted by how well is stands up. A marriage of sexy vocals, tightly constrained distortion and quality hooks. The Tricky remix of Milk is well worth seeking out.

Ooh, lot of nostalgia for this.... Not _quite_ enough to bump it to a five, but I'd give it 4.5 if I could. Fave track - "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl" both instantly transport me back in time...

I definitely had a Shirley Manson girl crush when this album came out.

This album is a strong mix of alternative rock, pop, and dance music. Despite its almost hourlong length, I found this album to be very enjoyable and it captures my attention throughout. I’m sure the Argumente can be made that this album dilutes the emergent alternative rock genre with commercial pop trappings but I think that is the wrong way to think about it. Commercialism is important for all of the popular genres and this album strikes a very clean balance.

hmm itseasiassa aika VITUN HYVÄ häh albumin keskiosa vähän paskaa mutta alkuloppu huhhuh tykkään hyvinkin paljon LÄHELLÄ VÄHÄN LIIAN LIPASEE LIIKAA semmosta rokki pokki jee jee paskaa mutta onneksi on vähän omalaatuisempi.....hyvä löytö en ole kuullutkaan bändistä... milk paras bisi

I seem to remember buying this for my sister, back in the day, as a birthday present, on Amazon. So I have had this album longer than I realized. I should have listened to it before now. Wow, what a good album. I think the star here is definitely Butch Vig. The production really makes every song hit with a punch. I don't think there was a single song that I disliked, maybe the last song was a little obvious (reminded me of STP's Kitchenware & Candybars). But otherwise, really good stuff!

I was not a fan of Garbage when they came out in the 90's. Not rock enough and too dance for me maybe. But all these years later I have a much better appreciation for their sound and I can hear so much of it in bands (who I like or don't mind) that came after them (e.g., Metric, AWOL Nation, even the Killers). It's kind of amazing how long it took for computer-aided rock to really take off. It seems like half the bands considered rock these days are just layering and looping computer and synth rock sounds. I think what I realized listening to the album for the last week is how catchy the real instrument sounds are and how well they're mixed with the "fake" instruments. I prefer the non-singles like Supervixen, Not My Idea, Dog New Tricks, or Fix Me Now (my favorite on the whole album) to the singles. I quite like Only Happy When it Rains now but I didn't in the 90's and I like Vow (a lesser known single) more than the bigger ones (Queer or Stupid Girl). All in all, a pretty solid album even though I tend not to like produced rock and prefer authentic rock and instruments.

Tough one. I really like this album, as it came out in some formative years for me, musically. I like all the songs, but is it classic?

Sound so thick you feel it fill up warehouses and pushing all the air out. So good!

It’s pronounced garbáge

Very 90s, great bass lines.

I probably sing "I'm only happy when it rains" once a week...

Cool stuff

79/100: I’m classifying this album as another hidden gem I’d never heard of before. I had no idea who Garbage was before getting this album, but wow do I love this group now. This album is quintessential 90’s grunge, and as a fan of grunge, I don’t know how I’d never heard it before. The song “Only Happy When it Rains” is an absolute banger, as is “Fix Me Now” and “Not My Idea.” In fact, I’d argue there’s not much filler on this album at all, even the songs that I wouldn’t classify as “great” are still very good. I’ll definitely be revisiting this group and album again in the future.

solid 7/10 not amazing, and those lyrics regularly made me roll my eyes but the production is actually pretty good mostly enjoyable with a few awkward quirks

Hadn't listened to this in ages... and it's better than I remembered. Original CD, not the 2015 remaster.

Is there a more 90s band? Vat-grown hybrid of grunge guitars, dance beats and a sharp pop songwriting core. Almost like they were put together by a famous producer.... so with a slight caveat it's still a terrific sound even if the album is slightly too long. Ten tracks would have made it a whole lot better. So four stars. Can any album with the lyric I am milk. I am red hot kitchen really be five stars?

Not garbage! This took me back to high school. Not that this was my preferred genre of music at that time but you would hear Only Happy When It Rains all the time on the radio, the Box, or MTV.

It was a great listen again. The poppy grunge, the clever lyrics and some killer songs

I came in only knowing that one song everyone knows so my expectation were pretty lukewarm. Most of the songs completely leap over I'm Only Happy When It Rains.

FANTASTIQUE! Some really famous songs on here. young me remembers the dope ass theme for THe World is not enough. great band. i can't 5 star it, but i loved it.

Sleazy, sexy and cool. This is better than I remember from the time!

Hard to believe it's not a greatest hits album - with anthems like Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, and Stupid Girl on the track list. Quite a debut! Shirley Manson manages to ooze sex and scary at the same time.

Guitarrero a ratos

Alternative rock, 1995. An album to listen to have some fun and to enjoy catchy tracks. The record is solid in every of its parts and sounds really fresh. "Vow" and "Stupid Girl" are probably the best section of this excellent project.

I came in only knowing that one song everyone knows so my expectation were pretty lukewarm. Most of the songs completely leap over I'm Only Happy When It Rains.

Another great mid 90s album, there are some legitimate bangers on this one. Much fun had listening to this

A great alternative, post grunge album of the 90s. Garbage has a knack for mixing together happy-sounding music, catchy hooks, and dark lyrics. I really enjoy Shirley Manson's voice, and the slightly dark/creepy vibe of the music. This album is also full of late 90s-nostalgia for me, having grown up listening to it.

Thank you, 1001 Albums project, for introducing me to this band, and for the life of me I have nary a clue why up until this moment I missed this album, this band, and their music for the past 25+ years. Oh, well, I'm here now, and I love it. This album is fantastic. I haven't heard many bands that can take elements of punk and its related styles and infuse it with a bit of pop and techno and rock, etc., yet make it work really, really well. I'll have to go explore their albums that followed. But first, another listen-through on this one. So good!

Another 90s rock/pop band that I didn't know, but this time I really liked the album. Garbage sounded similar to Smashing Pumpkins, or for some reason Moloko, but maybe because the song were fresh for me, I had a nice time listening to it. Some songs, like 'milk' have potential of being repayable for quite a while. In general, very positive album.

Great album. Enjoyed and and will pull off some tracks

Fun 90 grunge

This album has some real gems that is for sure gonna be on repeat. 3.8 ⭐

i never considered myself a fan of grunge music! but this album has me rethinking that idea. i do see similarities with this album and others by female singer-songwriters in the nineties. the contents of and the focus on the lyrics, for one. this album is dark and emo! it allows me to really feel my feelings. shirley manson’s voice is perfect for garbage’s types of songs. so many songs where the guitar really stands out. but the bass on “as heaven is wide”?? wow. and no songs are duds! “stupid girl,” the only song i sort of knew on the album, containing a loop from “train in vain” by the clash absolutely blew my mind! their loops from various genres show garbage’s desire to not be defined. going to rate this a 4, but i wouldn’t be surprised if i regretted not submitting a 5.

Lots of familiar songs on here. And interesting blend of grunge and trip hop but all in all a bit muddy and miserable for my taste, I did enjoy it more than I was expecting though.

Willing to bet Billy Corgan was listening to this a lot when he wrote Adore.

Despite what the name belies, this album is not garbage! It's actually pretty good!

Big nostalgia album for me. They were one of the first bands I liked and knew that they were "new" music. The 007 song was a big one for me as a kid. Probably don't quite deserve a 4 but I need to give them more than a 3.

I conté uns quants temes demolidors

Only Happy When It Rains je GOATED pjesma ❤️ I ja sam ih sluso 2019 na inmusicu hehe

“this is a slay!”

Good 90s, few hits

sonzera

Not sure if it's the nostalgia talking but I thought this was a really strong album. A couple of songs didn't do it for me but overall it's a hell yes.

Brought back great memories of my childhood in the 90s. Some absolute bangers on this album!

I'm digging this; a cool weird, grunge-y vibe.

I liked this! There were some pretty good songs on here.

Stupid good :)

Pretty good, I liked a few songs, others were a bit forgettable but nothing inherently bad with it.

Didn't listen to all but I love trash and garbage

I fuck with Garbage. That simple.

I rather enjoyed revisiting this, I probably wouldn't have done so without the prompt from this project so nice one

Very nice album from my least favorite era. I definitely prefer their softest side, like shown on Milk.

I vaguely knew Garbage from a few songs I heard in movie soundtracks. I didn't think I was going to like this album so much, but I did! Shirley Manson offers a beautiful vocal performance and the musical arrangements have something subtly unique. Very happy to have listened to this album.

Rock alternativo. Interesante.

4-; pretty good one, interesting melodies with really interesting solutions like in the opening track with those pauses, I like the vocals; album isn't samey, I enjoyed it

It was fun

Dope 4

Hard to fault and even harder to find a reason not to give it five stars but couldn't quite get there. Heard a lot of Kirin J Callinan guitar licks throughout

not garbage

This is a 3.5 star album. I am going 4 because I was so pumped to see them last year with Liz Phair and Alanis. Stupid pandemic.

Imagine you're a hobo and you find a whole warm Big Mac in the dumpster. It's still garbage, but you can enjoy it

I grew up watching Garbage on MTV... literally...

Contrary to popular belief, not garbage

FIVE HOURS?! I guess that's the delux edition with all the remixes. They will be interesting to hear

A very good album. Pop...punk...indie...grunge...shoelace a little bit of everything I this one, including some excellent songs. Reminds me of The Darling Buds album; Erotica, which would be a 5 star album for me but does make this list. Anyway this one's a 4 🌟

i vibe with it

I didn't expect to like it, but it was a really enjoyable album minus one point for crappy band name.

Very 90s rock, kinda liked it

The name of the band and the music they put out are at odds with each other. This album is absolutely great. A bunch of really solid tracks combined with some monster hits. While not as solid as Version 2.0, I would be able to listen to this many more times over.

Gotta love those mid 90s feelings.

Well crafted guitar rock

Good album of its time.

A classic, to say the least.

garbage and tals

Wisconsin rocks

This was certainly not garbage, in fact it was really good. I had never heard of Garbage before so i'm glad I got them today because I enjoyed this so much more than expected. It's hard for me to decide between a 3 or 4 star for this one. I'll go with a weak 4 star rating I think.

This was a cool album with some really interesting guitar work and awesome vocals by Shirley Manson

Great 90s vibe

Pretty darn solid, still sounds fresh to me.

My friend sam shoplifted this from the whsmiths where he worked for my 17th birthday

Debut was their best album.

Enjoyed it!

Pretty good!

I’ve always enjoyed most of the singles I’ve heard from Garbage but this might be my first full album listen. It seems a lot less produced than their second album and DEFINITELY their third album which had some really candy pop singles. Definitely don’t have a problem with that. Fave tracks: “Queer” “Supervixen” “Stupid Girl”

7/10. Good, edgy rock music.

It's decent, though not super appealing to me. 7/10

Good "modern" rock

Not garbage. 🦧 A ferocious album that's both brutal and beautiful. If it was a footballer, it'd be Franck Ribery. SHACK has a cervix.

I liked “I’m Only Happy When It Rains,” when it was on the radio, but it was a time when you had to buy the entire album for one song. I never got to know the rest of the album as a result, but I will probably enjoy it. To be honest, I don’t think I would have liked this back when it came out, but I definitely see it fitting into my music tastes at times now. It suits my mood today.

MBV + NIN + ... + 90s other 90s alt rock. I like it.

Good album. A lot of recognisable tunes.

Good album. Captures 90’s grunge

Classy 90s Love it

Kind of grungy pop. First half of album much stronger than second. Really enjoyed it for something I'd never heard before

I knew more of the songs than I thought I would! Great production but not a keeper for me.

Fucking goated

1 - Supervixen - Excellent - 👍 2 - Queer - Good - 👍 3 - Only Happy When It Rains - Good - 👍 4 - As Heaven Is Wide - Good - 👍 5 - Not My Idea - Ok - 👍 6 - A Stroke of Luck - Ok - 👍 7 - Vow - Ok - 👍 8 - Stupid Girl - Excellent - 👍 9 - Dog New Tricks - Ok - 👍 10 - My Lover's Box - Good - 👍 11 - Fix Me Now - Ok - 👍 12 - Milk - Excellent - 👍

Nostalgia

I recognized a couple of songs off this that had radio play on a local alt station back in the 90's, name Only Happy When It Rains and Stupid Girl. Enjoyed listening to the whole album. Really did As Heaven as Wide which I hadn't heard before.

Awesome album, love Shirley Manson’s voice.

Quintessential 90s alt-rock band uses quintessential 90s sounds: crunching loud-then-soft dynamics, beautiful melodies hidden in a hurricane of noise. Butch Vig knew all the sonic tricks and Shirley Manson was the perfect sexy-cool front woman. This album sounds even better now than I remembered from when it first came out.

Quality American Album! Definitely not Garbage this one *slaps thigh*

I like this album, the production sound is Nirvana-esque, obviously thanks to Butch Vig

Grungey vibes, nice to listen to, a little aggressive but overall enjoyable

Some weird songs. I especially liked Stupid Girl.

Top gems, brings me back to high school

Has not aged! Good hit singles, indie rock, super moody vocals and electronic programming too.

Nostalgia pura

Nostalgia album for me so I rate pretty high.

Great album and a reminder that I need to see them live!

I've only ever heard and enjoyed the singles before, so it was no surprise to discover this is a great rock/pop album, Shirley Manson has an excellent voice.

Still sounds fresh. And Shirley Manson used to give me the horn.

I was only familiar with the radio tracks. This was pretty good. I like her vocals.

oh the 90's. this is from the golden era of MTV, this is a great album

Bängeri 90's rock, emt. Garage/alt/whatever

I'm assuming this is an iconic album for women's rights activists. I really enjoyed the stories that played along in the album.

Liked it more than I thought. Songs were fun but not overly simple

Absolutely loved the 90's grunge vibe. Felt a lot like Eve 6 with the hard cuts in the sound of the music.

Thumbs up

This is a great album I love it.

great sounding but not connecting to the lyrics. overall super well done though

I liked this album. It has I'm only happy when it rains.

Garbage

Classic 90s

I knew Garbage was Butch Vig's band, so I was pretty excited to listen to this album. I loved The Smashing Pumpkin's "Siamese Dream" and Nirvana's "Nevermind," both of which Vig had previously produced. I had also heard that this album was really good! And I don't think people were wrong about that. Listen, I'm a fan of pop music. Okay, maybe not the "TikTokified" generic stuff from the last 6 years. And not the EDM in the 2010s or a lot of 80s synthpop or... Maybe I don't like pop PRODUCTION per se, but some pop songwriting can be really good. And that's what Garbage does here. The songs are noisy and raw. They use a lot of weird sounds and heavy fuzz. But it's still pop at its core. The melodies and riffs are catchy, the songs are easy to digest, but it still is chaotic. Maybe a good comparison is Weezer's "Pinkerton," though Garbage is not nearly as socially awkward. However, like a lot of 90s rock albums, I feel like it could've been better if it was 5-10 minutes shorter. Not every album needs filler to reach an hour in runtime. Some albums are perfect at 40, 30, or even 20 minutes. Had the band decided to cut just two songs before releasing the album, I think it would be fine. But the songs blend together after a while. Admittedly, I was really busy yesterday when I heard this album, hence why I'm writing and publishing this review today. I definitely owe this album a proper listen. But from what I got out of it, this is a great alternative rock album. ----- #0004 Heard on: 16 Sep. 2026 Rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆ (87 / 326) Favorite track: "Only Happy When It Rains" Least favorite track: "Dog New Tricks"

Not my favorite but Stupid Girl is such a good song. Incredibly iconic.

enjoyed this, but it didn’t leave a big impression on me—but that could be placement against the recent run of albums

I got a little bored of it by the end, but they have a cool sound.

this was so close to being a 4 but its just not that special

I liked this. I remember hearing many of these songs when they came out.

Eh Bunch of bangers but I think not having grown up with this impacts my view - feels very 90s but I think that’s a result of hindsight

I honestly don’t even remember this I think it was fine

I've been confusing Garbage and Hole, I just realized

I don't think this is an album you need to hear before you die, but it's a very fun album. Queer is great, lots of other bangers as well.

I’m only happy when they play that one song. Kidding aside, I thought it was enjoyable. Good background music

I enjoyed this well enough and thought there were enough standout tracks here to warrant a second listen at a later date. Reading about the band on Wikipedia, I was surprised to see that the lead singer is from Edinburgh! I certainly couldn't hear that in her vocals. Overall, pretty good but there are far better albums of this type from the 90s.

Fireren frister, men plata blir litt for monoton.

I didn't really listen to Garbage back in the day (just a little bit too old), but I can see why they were so popular. This is a solid album, start to finish.

Garbage is not garbage. In fact, some moments on the album are probably some of the best grunge to have come out of their time, possessing both the crunchy guitars of alt rock and moody electronic effects. Almost all of the tracks were hit-or-miss for me, with Vow, My Lover's Box, and Milk being the best ones. They really shine when they lean towards their electronic side rather than their rock side. The problem is the best moments only come halfway into the record. Does placement really matter though? The b-side was definitely the best-side in this case of garbage.

The singles are so good, but a lot of the rest of the album sounds very one-note. Still a good listen, but was hoping for more.

Solid trea.

I liked it better than I expected. Solid.

I don't know if I've ever heard anything by Garbage. I guess we'll find out! Really enjoying a lot of tracks. Queer and Stupid Girl were both great. I wish the album had ended with Sleep. Also the album was soooooooo long. I didn't dislike it! But I wasn't expecting it. I don't know if I'd ever heard their music before but I was surprised at the female vocals, so I definitely didn't know them by name even if I have heard them. Overall an interesting listen with a few stand outs.

sin más con algunas guapas

Never owned this album and yet I know most of the tracks, which tells you some of the people I hung around with in the mid 90s were into it. On reflection it seems machine tooled to be something I would have liked and yet now it doesn't do all that much for me. Dare I say it's a bit samey?

Pre Listen: Never heard of this group before, but the title isn't filling me with hope. Normally when a band is this self-depreciating it shows in their sound as well. Low expectations. Notable Tracks: Supervixen - You're not that guy pal. You think you are that guy, but you're not that guy. Post Listen: That's crazy how many albums on this project are such nothing-burgers. Every single song here felt like background music. Another one of those albums where there's really nothing special I can point out. The only overtly negative thing I could really identify was the audio mixing, the volume of every instrument and the vocals was seemingly randomized with every new track. The vocals especially were so quite, I couldn't understand the lyrics 90% of the time. The whole album has this stereotypical late 90's sound to it, like something you'd hear from the Matrix and other movies like it from the time. Ultimately I don't think I'm the target audience for this album. 3/5

When I was 12 - 13 years old I would have loved this album. It has a certain type of confidence, almost like it announces itself like "this is the type of music the cool kids with backwards hats and lip rings are listening too". Years later, styles change and it feels substantially less cool, but still holds onto some of its merit through pretty timeless production and execution.

Some decent songs on here. A little slow-ish at times for me, and the album is very much of the 90's. Still not a bad album. 3/5 Might listen again

Competent but unremarkable.

5/10… dance rock / *1995

First listen

Interesting and unremarkable at the same time. I’m only happy when it rains is a familiar goodie, but otherwise bleh. A lot of allusions to religion, and I’m not quite sure whether it’s pro or atheist. Decent sounds, probably won’t listen again. 2.7.

iconic, coole gruppe, etwas einseitig

Not bad but not for me

Enjoyable, but can be a bit much at points

Nothing about this album stands out to me. It's always been a reminder of two things, Butch Vig is a good drummer and Shirley Manson is a good singer

"It's not a phase, mom!"

I liked this overall, but the sound-mixing wasn’t great.

Another man's treasure!

Instant 90s nostalgia trip from the opening guitars. Most of these songs would fit right in on the soundtrack to a 1990s Batman movie, or an episode of Veronica Mars (the most 1990s coded television show to air in the 2000s?). There's a sameness of affect that makes it hard to tell if I'm listening to one of the big hits I'll recognise when I get to the chorus, or an album track that isn't actually familiar to me, just seems like it is. "As Heaven Is Wide" is a killer title and has some interesting implications when I actually stop to think about the subject matter.

Ekkert sérstakt, en ágætt.

A very produced and heavily crafted pop album dressed up in rockers trousers. I don’t mean that as a bad thing, I really quite enjoyed it… there’s a lot to be said for things like this. It’s quite powerful in its way.

Ist doch okay, mal was anderes.

Ziemlich solides Album.

Lite deppig. Supervixen, Only happy when it rains, Vow och Stupid girl sticker ut, resten känns meh.

Anything but timeless but that makes it so charming and fun. Paired very nicely with watching Clueless last night.

Overall Rating - 2.83/5 (5.67/10). This sounds just like 1995. Nothing really bad, but nothing great, either.

Definitely understand why this was a big hit when it came out. Not totally my style but I enjoyed it.

Another one that’s not really my thing but also not bad at all.

Solid rock and roll - decent album

Angry women make good music Supervixen is an insane opening song Not feeling in a very angry feminist mood but if I was I think I’d enjoy this more

Not a bad album. I was familiar with stupid girl and I'm only happy when it rains, but hadn't heard the others. This would probably be a four if I was more familiar with it. Perhaps all listen again and advice my score

Milk

It was okay. I thought it was overproduced though. That overproduction took out the rawness of Shirley Manson’s voice. I liked her album with her previous band, Angelfish better.

Okay as mid-nineties indie rock goes, passed me by back then due to the Brit Pop overload, but no overly concerned that it did.

Enjoyable.

Good album - contains two or three of the big rock songs of the 90s. Overall, a little too much of the same thing though.

I remember listening to this album driving around Houston during high school. It's undeniably good but there was also always something about it that felt contrived. Maybe I was vaguely aware of the way the band was formed- less of a creative coming together and more of a calculated construction- but now I think my impression was due to the heavy use of sampling and innovative, plastic-sounding production techniques and sounds that were unfamiliar in the context I was listening in. Hearing it now, it's remarkable how good the album sounds and how huge the hooks are. Garbage was definitely pushing boundaries, exploiting a gap in the market for pop-centric, image forward and genre-fluid alternative rock. Butch Vig is far from unacclaimed, but the guy had a winning streak in the 90's that rivals many of the greats.

Never have really been a garbage fan but really listening to this album I could respect the guitar work and compositions

Suprised by how much I enjoyed this despite its sound. It was quite expressive and didn’t rely to much on the genres stereotypes. I don’t know if I’d listen again but was definitely interesting.

Pleasantly surprised by this, felt like an interesting mix between grunge and trip-hop. Probably wouldn't listen again but enjoyed it more than I expected to.

One of the countless Britpop-era CDs I purchased, and a solid one at that. Butch Vig's influence adds the grunge guitars and production, married to a Britpop melodic sensibility. There's no denying the singles prop the album up. 'Queer' is a 90s anthem; 'I'm Only Happy When it Rains' route one Britrock; and 'Stupid Girl' has a next-level production and layering that elevate this to enduring classic. There is some grunge-inspired filler. With the drum machine backing at points, it can feel a little like a grunge tribute or a cash-in. A wonderful core to the album and less interesting filler, resulting in a solid listen.

pas mal, certaines musiques sont a réécouter

Overall, the song was pretty good.

Washes over pleasantly enough without grabbing me. RYM: N Saved a song: N

female lead rock vocalists were eating good in the 90s

Rokimpaa musaa jonku tekemisen taustalle.

Not my cup of tea. Having said that, I understand the praise, and there are some songs in the album which are absolute bangers

Good rock/pop

ya ok sure

solidan album. distorzijski alternativni rok s dobrim ženskim vokalom. prva pjesma vjerojatno najslabija, sredina solidna, a nažalost tek bih zadnju stvar, pjesmu »milk«, mogao opisati kao baš dobru. stoga jedna lijepa trojka

Garbage were fairly big over here in the post Nirvana days, their radio friendly sound and lady vocals more palatable to the Radio 1 crowd. Not scary enough to be put off by, not heavy enough to turn off the listeners also hoping to hear Wigfield and BoyzIIMen. Aside from the two big singles, there's not much here. They're not big fans of melodies, are they? There were a lot of female fronted similar bands around this time. On this evidence I'm not sure why this lot outlasted most of the others.

Surprisingly not garbage

I never really got into this when it was released, just felt a bit too Polished and poppy but in registering I think it has grown on me a little. Milk is a great track and what I seen as sterile in the 90’s has sort of transformed to competence and quality. It’s not an essential for me bit I can now understand why it went platinum 3.3

It's fine. Good tracks but not really my thing

When I first heard Garbage’s self-titled debut album in 1995, I thought the name was a bit over the top, but somehow it hit the nail on the head. I’ve since realized that my taste in music has changed in this regard over the past 30 years, and today I find “Garbage” quite tolerable. I also remember that Garbage sounded a bit like the Smashing Pumpkins to me, and I can partly confirm that impression. Aside from the obviously different vocal styles, however, the two bands differ in the way they create boredom: While the Smashing Pumpkins simply layer so many tracks on top of each other until everything sounds the same, the Garbage sound simply lacks any sense of tension. In summary, this is a very mediocre alternative rock album.

6- / 10

I am aware of and slightly familiar with Garbage - and have 4 songs by them liked on Spotify. 2 of those are from this album - "Only Happy When it Rains" and "Stupid Girl". I've never dug deeper than some of the radio hits. So I'm definitely interested in discovering more. Thoughts after listening 3 times ... Oh yeah, I recognize "Queer" also from the radio back in the day. Pretty good. "As Heaven is Wide", "Stroke of Luck", "Vow", "My Lover's Box" are all pretty good. The keyboard part of "Milk" reminds me of Talking Heads. I like that one. The whole time I was listening I kept thinking that Poe from the 90s did this kind of music better. I still wonder why Poe never got the acclaim and popularity. I know she had some major legal issues but it seems like the stuff she did release should be more popular. I ended up liking 8 of the songs - all of the ones mentioned above. Excited that I got to add 6 more "new to me" songs because of this project. I will add, all of these songs are "pretty good" but none of them would be considered my favorite songs or anything like that - but I will enjoy them when they come up on my playlists. Cool they’ve got some funky off normal beat stuff; nothing jumped out as needing to save though

I was not excited when I saw this was the album of the day, as I was not a fan of this band back in the day. The hits from this album were played constantly on MTV and radio and I got sick of them pretty quickly. Before listening yesterday, I was trying to figure out what I didn't like about them and I decided I think I am just not a fan of Shirley Manson as a frontwoman. [One hour later...] I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would! Whatever it was that bothered me in 1995-97 does not seem to bother me anymore.

Wanted to roll the eyes at yet another 90s alternative rock album but As Heave Is Wide made me sit up in my seat. Also loved the use of the Train in Van drums on Stupid Girl. Wikipedia says they wanted to make unpalatable sounds palatable and they mostly succeed at it. Solid 3.5, this era of rock inexplicably continues to grow on me.

stupid giiiiiiiiiiirl...

5/10 I didn’t care about it at all nothing caught my attention but it could be a cool background song in a movie

I always kind of regarded this as a very-of-its-era 90s pop album. It is exactly what I thought it would be: a mostly mediocre 90s pop album with some rock and shoegaze influences. This is incredibly commercial by nature, with a strong emphasis on hooks and that feminine angst that was incredibly popular for a brief moment in the 1990s(see Alanis Morrisette for another example of this). I guess it belongs on the list as an example of the musical mainstream of the 90s, and it does have some legitimately good songs towards the back half, but it's ultimately just an example of the popular sound of its era. The band is more or less a footnote in modern music, and this didn't really have any staying power. This album is the #7 ranked album of 22 1995 albums. Other 1995 albums rated by me: The Bends(1/22)-4 What's the Story Morning Glory(2/22)-4 Jagged Little Pill(3/22)-4 Foo Fighters(5/22)-4 Different Class(6/22)-2 Me Against the World(11/22)-3 Exit Planet Dust(13/22)-3

A delightful romp with the band through some excellent punk/ pop, love how it sounds before the more produced sound they got known for as their popularity blossomed

This whole thing is a slick gimmick, courtesy of Butch Vig, who commodified his production, added a female voice akin to Courtney Love and sold millions of records to brainless drones who loved the sound he helped create on classic grunge albums that actually meant something. Hot Garbage, indeed.

I've seen Garbage live twice and lived through their 90s heyday when this came out and I still can't seem to rate them any higher than a 3. I do appreciate what Shirley Manson did and how it affected current music. There is no Billie Eilish without Shirley Manson.

Überdurchschnittlich guter 90s pop

This Is Not My Idea Of A Good Time 1001 Albums Generator 307 (6/7/2026) Favs: Supervixen Only Happy When It Rains Vow Least Fav: Dog New Tricks

Great for being released on my birthday, as well as being a fun grungy 90's rock record.

Pretty good. Don't have that much to say but I like the mix of 90s electronic with rock. I can't really think of many others doing that There are some parts where I wish it was a bit noisier in a shoegaze way like Stupid Girl. That would've completed the fuzzy bass on tracks like Dog New Tricks quite well 3.5 Highlights: Only Happy When It Rains, A Stroke of Luck

I mean, it’s fine. There’s a song I knew on it. But no better than fine

Good memories.

Not particularly unique or adventurous but solid music. I wouldn't rate this as one of my favorite albums but it's fun enough to be worth a listen.

This was garbage for sure.

I didn't love it, but it's definitely solid. Just doesn't really ever do much. Perfectly fine album. I wouldn't mind listening to this album again.

Having a hard time getting myself to listen to this all the way through, which says something. A couple of big hits for them here. Very Pop candy, even when talking about misery. The wall of sound leaves me feeling tired, even on the songs I enjoy.

Quite enjoyable but no great shakes

Really good 90s album. My Lover's Box and Not My Ideas were cool new tracks for me, and Only Happy When it Rains holds up well (even if the Doughboys Doubles over the years have changed its meaning a bit for me). Came close to 4 stars, but didn't get all the way there.

Everything was alright. But then the trip-hop Milk hit me at the end. What a great finish.

I really liked some of this album, I do remember Garbage - Shirley Manson rings a bell, not sure what I was into at the time, 🤔

Maybe a little better than a 3.

Not bad I guess. Wouldn't queue for them

This was way poppier and dance-y than I expected. Having never really listened to them much outside of a few singles, I had thought Garbage were closer to grunge, punk, or heavier alt rock than they are on here. The songs are still fairly solid, but suffer from that for me. I think my main issue is that the whole thing seems to lack depth. It's like they wanted to make something cool, so they went with what they thought would have that effect for each track rather than making something more real or inspired. And yeah, some of it is cool. A lot of the songs are catchy and have a fun hook. But they often feel shallow and uninteresting to me. It's a little too pop-like for my taste, and it doesn't really pull me in. Like it's something to enjoy with your brain disengaged rather than something to put your attention into. All that said, it was still a decent listen for the most part. I don't think it needed to be 50+ minutes long, but there wasn't really anything I'd call bad here. It just wasn't anything special to me. Overall: 2.8/5

Decent. Queer is amazing.

I remember this record meaning a lot to girls in my high school at the time. And honestly, it’s really solid. The production is top notch; it sounds amazing. I’d also say that most of the songs are at least a little catchy. It turns out, I like this record a good deal better than I originally thought. But honestly, I’ll never come back to it. It IS a solid record, and there are at least a handful of songs I’d happily listen to again. But it didn’t change anything for me in terms of long term appreciation. I love the nostalgia of listening to it, but I’m cool after a spin. Solid, but not amazing, unfortunately. 7.5/10

Not remarkable ,it was background music to me

OK music, forgettable though. Maybe in 1995 this was very fresh, but for my current 2026 palette it's just not interesting enough to stand out. I'd have loved for this to completely suck, just so I could sign off with 'this was garbage'.

I don't know - this one just didn't land well on my ears.

Svag trea.

Probably need to review my rating system. This is a solid three, but I think I need to downgrade some 60s rock that I was actually bored by.

An enjoyable listen, some songs I quite liked. But nothing exceptional as a whole album.

Not garbage. Some gold, but also lots of beige

I recall these songs in the background playing on the radio a lot. Never got too close to them, but fun hear them them again.

Good for what it is. Some classic '90s jams well executed

A brooding, but up beat 90s alternative album that has some hits on it. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Highlights: "Only Happen When it Rains" and "Stupid Girl"

Basic pop rock with basic female vocal. Not great but not terrible as well

I didn't really get Garbage at the time, and I'm not sure I do now. This was ok

Album 196. Garbage (https://open.spotify.com/album/3gcPVCFXfShcfVtFdMBXNG?si=4Fogx58LTmezI50bQQwfLQ) — Garbage (1995) Unexpectedly solid alternative rock album, but not outstanding. 3/5 Liked: — Only Happy When It Rains — A Stroke of Luck

It's okay, some good songs, a lot of filler, very average 90s post grunge music

I felt like a bad bitch listening to this album 💅

Not good but also not bad?

I was in Middle School when this album came out, and I had both this and their 2.0 album. So, I'm a little biased, but I think they're pretty good. There's nothing outstanding happening here, but it's just good alternative rock and very 90s.

Garbage by garbage kind of sounds like garbage, but I kind of like the sound of the garbage. I don't know how to rank this album, it sounds bad, but yet I still enjoy it on some level.

Solid enough debut album from Garbage. It's a bit on the forgettable side though. The vocals fall pretty flat for me, guitars sound generic and there's nothing truly adventurous here. I mean, it sounds good, but not terribly exciting. Even the singles off this album are just "ok." This one gets a 3, some ok songs but I'm really just not interested.

Pretty fun, not great but solid.

It ws better then i gave it credit for in 90 whatever. Its fine.

Good album, but not sure I see it being top 1001 of all time though.

Strange one, at times it’s very easy to get lost in the noisy grooves and dirty guitar tones, but it also can come across as a rather cynical commercial construction. Still it’s mostly fun and energetic and does a good job of occasionally having some moodier tracks as well like “Queer” and “A Stroke of Luck”. In general the album is very solid, the vocals are decent, the instrumentals sound great and are interesting enough. I think thought that it’s all a bit generic? There’s nothing that really stands out enough to make me want to come back to it, despite it being generally enjoyable. Strong 3

Surprisingly good, enjoyed the music & vocals mix. Good listening experience.

Tough one. It’s not a 3 but it’s not a 4. This seemed like a real exercise in “steal like an artist.” It wasn’t offensively derivative of anything necessarily, but almost every song reminded me of another artist. I just don’t think this album offers anything that a playlist of Pumpkins, MBV, Sonic Youth, Hole etc wouldn’t cover.

I was hoping this album would be bad so i could say its name is spot on for the quality of the music but, it’s not :P Really good album, very diverse.

Some good singles but the rest of the album wasn't as good as I hoped. 3/5

Typ. En trea

Not Garbage, but also not that interesting. Lots of indie fuzz and an overall grungey sound but basically it was slightly edgy/melancholic pop music with a load of fuzz over the top. Not a huge fan of the vocals, just sounded like the singer would rather be elsewhere. Had some moments, and a couple of tracks were decent jams as background, but a whole album of it was kinda boring. Listenable though so going to go with a 3.

I enjoyed this album. I would have given it a 4 if each song did something more interesting or were shorter. Each song feels distinct but with each of them being 4 minutes I hoped they'd figure out something in their runtime rather than repeating flat melodies. No song has that moment where they manage to build on the individual pieces and make something special Solid 3
