solid fun album
It's alright. I reckon I'd get more into it if I listened to it a few more times.
I like this more now than I did when it came out.
Didn’t listen to all of it to be honest.
Jammin! I love these guitar sounds, the first track sounds like a remixed my bloody valentine song at first which I really enjoyed. This genre is not always my cup of tea, sometimes there’s too much happening that it can feel muddled for me, but I enjoyed this one! The high-tempo breakbeat drums on “As Heaven Is Wide” got me rockin out a little. Not my favorite album but still a solid alt-rock record. If David Fincher was a girl (or at least had more female-centric movies earlier in his career), it feels like this would play in the background. Favorite tracks: Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains, As Heaven is Wide, Not My Idea, Stupid Girl
I am always nervous when I come across bands, albums, movies, books, etc. whose titles invite instant and obvious harsh criticism. Sadly, with Garbage, you get a mixed bag. If they were relevant, important and interesting in their day, time has not done them any favors. If they aren't garbage, they are at least relegated to the yard sale where perhaps someone might find them interesting.
Expected and wanted this to be a 4, but it just didn’t do it enough for me. A solid 3.
Some good sounds but the lyrics are... subpar? Not sure I'll listen to that again but I might.
This was fine… started strong and ended weak. Was never really a listen again type though.
I remember when this came out! Awesome album.
Does what it says on the tin
Nostalgic album, has a few good songs
I bought this album when it first came out and, while it's perfectly pleasant, there's a reason why I haven't listened to it for the best part of 30 years.
Solid album, but not really my thing. Butch Vig is a legend (great production). Liked Songs Added: Vow
Len Houmous was always a big supporter of girls with guitars! A pioneer in so many ways! 2.7 9/12 Dogs New Tricks
Not their best
Good slice of nostalgia, taking me back to my mid teens and early festival experiences. Album itself is nothing spectacular though singles all solid and rest listenable.
Had totally forgotten that this was Butch Vig's band. Decent shoegaze vibes with a little more polish than some of the other acts that honestly I like a little more. I saw them live back in the day and enjoyed the show, but hearing the album now end-to-end didn't really engage me. I give it a 3 because it was listenable but not amazing for me.
If you're looking for a capsule of the Gen X experience, dive into this album. It contains this sort of malaise and disillusionment that was ripe during the early 90s. Shirley Manson's vocals have an attitude that perfectly pairs with this sentiment. But that's not to say that these tracks are depressed. The electronic backbone of the songs give them a surprising energy. They may be wallowing in self loathing but this music won't put you to sleep. It's a very unique mix of distortion and synth that lets you know you're listening to Garbage. 3.5 Stars
There were some good songs for sure, but the album as a whole wasn't too inspiring.
Pretty good but slightly dated
I’m a Garbage fan, but this album is not as consistent as their next one. There are some hits (“Queer” is phenomenal) and a few misses, and Shirley Manson sounds a little too restrained at times.
This album is like being a 17 year old girl who has just transferred to a new school because you were misbehaving at your last one. You miss your friends and you think it’s unfair that you had to leave. Several prissy bitches come and talk to you, but you can tell they aren’t looking to be friends. It’s pretty obvious that your doc martens, torn denim and flannel shirt don’t fit in with their aesthetic. Instead, it is pretty clear they are measuring you up to find things to tease you and ostracise you for. You figure you’re only gonna be at this school for one year before you head to uni, so you pick up your lunch tray and smack the main bitch across the face with it. With a bit of luck, everyone will give you a wide berth until graduation.
Some very dated sounds with lots of fuzz and repetitive drumming. I still like Only Happy when it Rains and A Stroke of Luck. Other highlights Vow, Fix Me Now. Would give it a 3.5 if the ranking system had halves.
Turns out, this Garbage record is not garbage. Favourite Track(s): Queer Least Favourite Track(s): As Heaven Is Wide, Fix Me Now
I am the right age for Garbage, but I somehow avoided them until today. This is fine. Very 90s. There are few good songs on here, but the rest get a little samey and boring. Always happy to hear a woman's voice, but I don't feel like I missed anything by having not listened to them all these year.
Not Garbage at all (lol), but also not premium (lol). It's a fun listen and a glimpse of 90's alt rock, from a very known band. I liked it, but don't feel like I will listen to it from will in the future. Very listenable and light, with one or two good tunes.
Couple good songs. Boy the lyrics really match the attitude
Great album
Shoegazey a bit like SSP
I almost like this music… it’s a bit dated. I already liked Stupid Girl but hadn’t heard the rest before. I like Not My Idea and Vow. I like Vow quite a lot actually. And Milk is okay.
It was OK - fair representation of the period, and I recognised more hits than I thought I would
Good songs, but they sound samey after a while.
First 2 songs: »This is amazing! Crossover of Triphop and Grunge« Following songs: »Either there are only 2 good songs or the concept wears off after 2 songs?«
Highlight songs: Supervixen Queer Only Happens When It Rains Stupid Girl
I'm absolutely a sucker for 90's production, and Garbage's s/t debut is steeped in 90's sounds. Butch Vig's production, the slightly poppy/dancey vibe to each song, and Shirley Manson's vocal stylings all contribute to a very enjoyable record. Highlights: "Supervixen", "Only HapPy When It Rains"
Great garage rock.
Only new Only Happy When It Rains. Very experimental and big in terms of production. The variations in genre and sound paid off in places but got lost in others. I liked the dark sound. I'm torn between a 3 and a 4.
Not for me.
This still hits. Surprised!
A quirky, yet abrasive and dark slice of manufactured mid-90s grunge. Whatever Butch Vig might have had in mind when founding the band, Shirley Manson certainly threw everything overboard, with her rage and at times brilliant lyrics dealing with mental health and equality shining through all of the songs. "Stupid Girl" is a stand-out for me, a song which was very present during my teenage years of watching MTV. But there are some deep cuts here that I really enjoyed as well - "My Lover's Box" for instance, a shockingly open song about desire. But ultimately, I think it didn't really grab my attention for more than several songs. Despite the great musicianship, most of the material sounds quite similar - usually a problem for me with grunge per se. So, it's a mixed bag, but one I might return to in the future.
'You can always pull out / If you like it too much.' Shoegazey yet not quite in the clouds, Garbage's eponymous debut is strange w/o coming apart at its seams. Shirley Mason may yelp about being the 'queerest of the queer,' but this is no more than a pop record, and I don't mean that as a bad thing. Somewhere between the Cocteau Twins, The Stone Roses, and a far more reined-in Kate Bush, you can see their influence on bands like Broadcast and artists ranging from Avril Lavigne to Courtney Barnett. Ultimately tho, the lyrics and the dubious angst they express don't covert me: 'If holy is as holy does / This house would burn straight down to hell'. At times it's a fun record. Problem is, I don't think they were going for fun as much as they were going for weird.
OK
A bit too grungy for me, but it surely has dynamism and edginess a-plenty. I remember buying it when it was first released. I’m looking at the cd cover as I write. Maybe my music evolution is the reason I find it now harsher on the ear than I might ordinarily wish to listen to now. 😳. Great start to my 1001 albums though.
Alt-rock with a hard edge, a big attitude, and big hooks. This was a fun, moody, good time. What a great band name too. And a cool album cover. That pink color must have really popped on store shelves in 1995 and in people's CD collections. It really announces itself.
A true underrated gem of 1990's grunge... Garbage are great! Cool, sexy, edgy, tight production, and great performances. "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains" are the two standout tracks here, with the former possibly being a top ~150 song of the 1990's in my opinion. When I was a kid my first crush was on this Irish girl in my class. I must have been in like 3rd grade or something.. but I remember seeing a video of red haired Shirley Manson on stage and thinking "this is the most attractive person ever". She might have been the first time I saw a celebrity and thought "I'm in love!". It's a solid album, and like I said underrated. It's a high 3 for me, but just not enough to round up to a 4.
I can’t explain why but this gave me a bit of a sore head (might have been dehydrated and at the gym tbf)
Recognized the popular songs in it but not really my kind of music
Another nice enough album that didn’t need to leave the 90s.
Nostalgisk gjenhør. To hits, resten ok.
Very good
It's okay. Not something I'd listen to otherwise. The singles are good.
Ehh, no complaints really. A little grungy, a little trip-hop, a little glossy. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - Only Happy When It Rains - Vow - Stupid Girl
Pretty good 90s rock.
decent not a huge fan of the vocals though
Some high points and joyous waves of 90s nostalgia, but padded with too many filler tracks
--Supervixen...good production. okay song --Queer...sleazy. it's good --Only Happy When it Rains...heavy. it rocks in an industrial way --As Heaven is Wide...good production/average song again. also it's too long --Not My Idea...I like this a lot and it's under four minutes! --A Stroke of Luck...the great production continues but this track feels lifeless --Vow...huh, I'm a little flummoxed by this one. It sounds both experimental and like it's trying too hard to be radio friendly. Lands in a weird space between both --Stupid Girl...I just realized this is basically Train in Vain. I'm smrt --Dog New Tricks...the bass is doing a lot of heavy lifting here --My Lover's Box...fits on the album but the tracks are starting to meld --Fix Me Now...this one feels schmaltzy when compared to the other tracks --Milk...great production/meh song. again
Fun and sassy '90s alt-rock with great production. I wish I liked it more but it does feel like mall music and is a little too polished for its own good. But good songwriting it absolutely is.
A little bit repetitive. Songs are quite similar. But I enjoyed it.
Ash enjoys this album a lot therefore it is good (I also enjoyed it)
Some situationally great songs - "Only Happy When It Rains" coming home from tennis. Overall, not really my stuff
Started out strong and then lost interest Super 90s dreary self loathing kinda music I’ll take Alice In Chains or any of the other grunge bands instead Shirley Manson is awesome though!
Rather than a band, it comes across almost like Shirley Manson’s solo project, with the other members staying in the background, focusing on sound design and contributing to the album’s distinctive ’90s atmosphere. For all its calculated coolness, it lacks the raw spontaneity and universal hooks that come from chance or impulse. I get drawn in while listening, but afterward many of the songs curiously fail to leave a lasting impression — maybe that’s why.
Shirley Manson has a cracking voice, and I like a handful of Garbage songs, but they fall into that quite bland British rock vibe of the 90s that I don’t really gel with. This was completely fine, but didn’t make an impact.
Cool layered sound. Had some bangers.
Rating: 3.2 This album is engineered and produced very well, I don’t have quarrel with any of the personnel on the album as they are very talented, the problem lies where 1. an untrained ear like mine can barely tell the songs apart and 2. it is very boring especially towards the end.
I like "Queer", the dede-de-duh-duh is nice. Cool vocals and cool guitar. "I'm Only Happy When it Rains" is a classic song, I didn't know who sang it. "Not My Idea" is a cool song. "Stupid Girl" is the other song I know. Cool song. I enjoyed this album, but didn't love it. 6/10
Far from life changing, but a good listen. 3/5 Highlights: As Heaven Is Wide A Stroke of Luck
very 90s
It was fine. I can see why some people would like it.
This is one of many 90s British Bands that upon listening to their singles did nothing for me. But upon listening to this album I thought it was very good. Catchy, but not poppy, songs and she has a great voice. Lovely but not so likeable for me to give 4 stars.
That was certainly not half-bad. I really liked Queer and the entire tone of the album was cool. Certified not garbage.
Garbage's self-titled debut blends gritty alt-rock with electronic flourishes, offering a sleek, radio-friendly sound that helped define mid-90s alternative. Shirley Manson’s cool, commanding vocals shine on standout tracks like “Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl.” While the album boasts strong production and memorable hooks, it occasionally leans too heavily on style over substance. A solid, if slightly uneven, debut that hinted at the band’s greater potential.
Really giving the 90s to early 2000s vibes. Not complaining since I enjoyed that era (and grew up then). This probably isn't something I would actively listen to. It's a mood for when I need to go through my emotions. Not My Idea is giving Persona 4 vibes during the chorus. I quite enjoy it since it's a fun turn from the calm, almost girlie pop tune that comes after it.
Every song was almost good. They all just lacked some necessary component.
Nice art rock music. Very groovy. Definitely a vibe. 3/5
Good 90s rock 👍
Muy disfrutable. ¿Quizá es mejor el 2º álbum?
A good listen, mainly like it for the single but the whole album is good
I never really cared to listen to Garbage when I was growing up, so I havent heard much by them. Just so happens 2 of the songs I know are on this album. They are as solid as I rememeber, but the rest of the album sounds the same. Every song has the same sounds repeated over and over. There wasn't much emotion on any of the songs, or so it sounds, it could be the style of music but it all just sounds flat from a vocal standpoint. Solid 2 close to a 3 star but I cant do half so only a 2 for me.
An album that I sometimes feel have a bit of a hard time deciding what it is. Sometimes it felt like... vampire rock? 'As Heaven Is Wide' made me feel that way somehow. Then 'Stupid Girl' and 'My Lovers Box' feels quite poppy. 'Milk' was probably my favourite track, but sounded completely different than the rest with its dreamy soundscape. Reminds me a bit of 'Tears From The Moon' by Conjure One and Sinead O'Connor. One thing I have to give this album is it sounded really good technically. Quite pleasant to listen to in fact, which is a cool breeze after the lowpoint of Wild Gift a few records ago.
I enjoyed it
Can see how it was influential but it doesn’t make me feel anything
not for me
Quite enjoyed this, though probably won't listen again. Pop with a hint of 90s grunge. None of the songs hugely stood out to me. It got off to a good start but then became a bit samey. I did start thinking it sounded a lot like Alanis Morrisette, and then realised Spotify had started playing Alanis Morrisette
This album for me is reminiscent of family life before my parents divorce. Daddy likes hot pink feathers? Daddy who is a stupid girl? This album edged me all the way until it's cataclysmic climax (for me) the aforementioned Stupid Girl. And hey if you liked this you'd probably like their other stuff too.
Starts good, goes on a bit. Great music to listen to while you banish vampires or enjoy spring break.
Started off pretty good I thought but then just descended into dullness.
Queer is a catchy track and one song really sounded like it should’ve been on a 90s vampire film/tv show. In the hot broth of angry rock from this period I can understand why they don’t eat at the top table but they certainly make for a decent amouse bouche
I -unsurprisingly- liked this one. Alternative, punky, electronic. Just what I expected from a late 90s album. Yay! Not garbage at all (sorry I had to)
Pretty good. A few standouts and a few forgettable. 3/5
Ok
Favorite songs: Queer, Not My Idea, Only Happy When It Rains, Dog New Tricks, Fix Me Now Least favorite songs: A Stroke of Luck, Milk 3/5
Highlights: Stupid Girl, Queer, I'm Only Happy When It Rains. In a nutshell: "I know it's good for you" My introduction to Garbage was #1 Crush, via the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack- the OST many 90s teens worshipped. Over 30 years on, Garbage still resonates, and still rocks. Overall: 6/10
gets points cause "queer" was on big shiny tunes 1
For some reason I paid zero attention to Garbage when their title album was released in 1995. I guess the mid-90s had so many indie / post-grunge pop-rock bands that it was hard to keep track. I’m glad I filled that gap. Although not my personnal cup of tea, this is an excellent first album, with more talent or originality than many of their contemporaries. It’s a bit too much on the pop side for me, but I like the way they mix many different influences, ranging from punk to trip hop. Production is top-notch (especially for the time), and some tracks sound really modern. Overall a very well-made album that certainly had some influence on later bands. I’d love to give it a 3,5*, but since I can’t, let’s say it’s a solid 3*.
Cool pop/rock mixture. Powerful voice and rhythms. A good sounding album overall, just not my type. 3/5
Back in the day, this album broke free from the tired clichés of alternative rock and brought a fresh, welcome mix of styles. It’s not perfect though, a bit uneven here and there, but some tracks have become classics that still sound great today.
Liked the parts sounding like crowded house and portishead. Shoegaze-y parts are alright too. Liked the first two tracks and then it’s a little repetitive.
This was ok…didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. A couple of the songs were a bit annoying to listen to in the car, however. I had to turn the volume up way high to hear the first part of the song, and then I would suddenly get blasted out when it changed directions. Three boring stars.
Overall Good, got some nice Songs 29/07/2025
A high 3. Started strong, but dropped off as time went on.
Underwhelming despite Shirley
62 songs, ongeveer 5hrs.
Solid
In my mind I had grouped together Garbage and The Cardigans as similar bands in era and style. I could not be more wrong. Went back and listened to some of First Band on the Moon - and Cardigans are so clearly better musicians and songwriters, not much of a point in comparing the two bands. There were some decent moments on this: Supervixen has a bit of a Nirvana vibe. Stupid Girl reminds me so much of listening to the radio nonstop in the 90s.
I barely remembered these guys from the 90s until now. Kind of right at the end of the amazing early 90s run of grunge/alternative rock. In ethos, Garbage fits right in with this album. Attitude, depression, hard rock. First two songs are great, and the album stays pretty consistent throughout. I'm not sure if I'll go back to this, but I probably would if I'd had it back in the 90s, as it's onboard with the stuff I liked back then. 3/5
Uneven. Some really cool moments but the rest is middle-of-the-road at best.
Some standout tracks for sure, but Version 2.0 is a more consistently solid and well-produced album.
Good ole straight ahead rock w an attitude
Not garbage!
Very 90s rock. It was pretty good but doesn't really stand out. Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains are the best of the bunch.
- Felt as if all the songs sounded similar. - Enjoyed the first song a lot but the rest were not my favorite. - Enjoyed hearing something different that I've never heard before.
I had always enjoyed singles from Garbage, but had never listened to a full album. I was hoping to hear some more dimensions of their songwriting and musicianship, but it was just okay. All the parts are there - Shirley Manson’s lead vocals in particular - but it failed to coalesce into anything more than good parts for me.
3.49999999 Perfectly encapsulates the ‘90s sounds of my childhood. I had never heard of Garbage before, really fun listening to this album and hit my nostalgia for the era hard.
Strong album and great production, though I personally couldn’t get into it but I wish I could. Definitely had its moments and there’s a lot of creativity in this one.
Misleading title
Fairly fun and interesting alternative rock album, and certainly not garbage.
More low key as a whole than I remember, still great.
An immaculately manufactured product that takes the Nirvana sound and molds it into a somewhat safer pop sheen, sanding down the edges and filling out the production to create an irresistible confection for the time. And it works, with the quick surface appeal of junk food. But something substantial is missing, and while it’s enjoyable it’s not something i feel compelled to ever come back to
overall i liked the album, there’s some songs i’ll definitely chew on again, but some i found muddled and a little samey. i didn’t listen through all of the bonus track, obviously listened to ‘alien sex fiend’ which i think was just too slow of a song for me. really liked the guitar in supervixen. desperately want queer to be on the soundtrack for a lesbian james bond movie. liked kick my ass as well. don’t think i’ll listen to the full thing again but a few songs definitely worth a revisit to me
This is ok, though it’s pretty standard non-descript mid-90s indie rock. Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It Rains are great though.
This is the best of what I consider teen movie music of the late 90s and early 2000s. It's such a specific nostalgia for me. Another one that I'm shocked I've never heard, this is RIGHT up my alley. It's exactly what I imagine hearing when I see Bratz dolls. It's very angsty lmao. I feel almost too old to be listening to it, though I do find it very well done. If I was 15 hearing this for the first time I would have lost my mind. This is like.... everything girls wanted to be in the late 90s and aughts. It's the grungy, rock and roll, cool girl vibe. Sleaze before sleaze existed. It's got a great rhythm to all the songs with the apathetic and raspy singing. So cool. I can tell that this influenced an entire generation of girl bands. Which is why it sounds so familiar to me even though it came out way before anything it reminds me of. It's reminding me of Lindsey Lohan's album Rumors. It's also reminding me of her band in Freaky Friday. Take that what you will lmao. If I had heard this when I was younger, I would probably LOVE it for the nostalgia but I don't have that and so it's just good to me. I did add Milk to my monthly playlist though so that's a good find!
[3.00/5] Final impression: Good overall, but nothing great here. Generic sound overall, and the lyrics are really boring. Vocals range from solid to annoying. Listened to on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/album/5oBySdXAQniFqWOgxPWQSs]. Supervixen - Catchy, good beat. *Queer - Sick instrumentals. Better than the first track. Only Happens When It Rains - Good, but not great. Lyrics are kind of weak. As Heaven Is Wide - Again, good but not great. Vocalist sounds like she's trying to sing low just to sound cool, and it's taking away from the track. Not My Idea - You guys already did doo-doo-do as a lyric, you can't get away with doing it again. A Stroke Of Luck - Just okay. Better than the last two tracks. Instrumentals have some interesting moments. Vow - Strongest track since Queer. Not as good as that one though. Stupid Girl - This one's pretty sick. Dog New Tricks - Just alright. My Lover's Box - Good instrumentals. Just okay otherwise. Fix Me Now - The guitar is good, but it would be better without her vocals. Milk - One of the weakest tracks of the album to round it out, I guess. Overall notes: They lured me in with Queer and then everything started to go downhill. Generally liked it, but most of the tracks were just "good" and not amazing. Queer and Stupid Girl are single handedly carrying this album up.
Nothing particularly stand out, cool sound, very similar songs.
3’5
Rock, leaning grungey
Nellee Hooper mix😀
Dated
Some hits but also fillers and sounds a bit dated nowadays.
Gaat zeker nog eens geluisterd worden
enjoyable listen but personally i dont see anything too special about it and i cant remember anything so thats why it gets THETHREESTARATRON (i should really stop giving out 4 stars to everything)
(39 known/82 new)
Didn't do anything for me. Very cliche and predictable. Production value was good so I give it 3 stars.
has some bops on it
Best Song: Stupid Girl. What a great, snarky chorus. Worst Song: Fix Me Now. The vocals seemed so turned down and fuzzy that they were barely present. Overall: Good but not great. It has a certain dirty/grungy quality that makes it enjoyable, but it lists too aimlessly between a yearning to be raw punk and a need to be approachable, meaning that it ends up relatively milquetoast.
Not bad, as far as garbage goes.
This is a great representation of the 90’s women led bands. Slightly angry, well delivered lyrics. If you grew up in the 90’s, you knew Garbage. The singles carry this album and why shouldn’t they? The other songs can hold the album together but not blow anyone away. This is peak 90’s music. What else can I say. I don’t love it but I’d listen to it Choice cut: #1 Crush
ok
This is one of those times where I could use a .5 between rankings. I like the sound of this band a lot, but it’s hard to really judge this album after one listen. I feel like this is the kind of band you need to listen to to really appreciate. Have a great sound. I like drums and guitar and the lead singer. I will be revisiting them.
Some good songs, some meh songs, some really good production, but Garbage are not really my thing. Too much pop influence for rock band.
solid, some parts were a tad cringy but nice grunge vibe
3.5
ziemlich fetzig
Some hits some bangers. Also some stinkers. Influence is definitely there.
super middle of the line for the genre i think
Was perfectly satisfied with this and would definitely listen again but didn’t find it to be incredibly interesting
Listenable alt rock. Nothing revolutionary but good.
I love Garbage and Shirley Manson. I have to admit that the album has a lot of fillers and without their great hits will be just another album.
Pretty good grungy textures and atmosphere all through the album, contrasted with Shirley Manson's absolutely beautiful voice. I think my one gripe is that at a certain point, all of the tracks start to feel the same. They're all technically good, but even the standouts don't have very memorable moments. Solid experience nonetheless! Standouts: A Stroke Of Luck • Fix Me Now
Classic production by Butch Vig that changed everything. Shirley Manson taught everyone a thing or two about fronting a band. Unfortunately, only the singles ("Queer," "Happy When It Rains," and the Clash-sampling "Stupid Girl") have aged well.
This made me feel nostalgic despite never hearing it before
It was fun. Made me nostalgic for a part of the '90s I wasn't old enough to actually remember.
Catchy choruses and well tempered effects. I wasn't blown away by anything but an enjoyable listen overall
#1 CRUSH always takes me back to Baz Luhrman’s Romeo + Juliet and high school. Pure teen angst nostalgia.
6,5/10
Better than I remembered. Definitely brought me back to being a kid and listening to this on my walkman. Ahead of its time. Some great tracks, but not something that I would revisit often.
Aight
Garbage’s self-titled album is a solid slice of classic '90s alternative. I didn’t hate it at all — in fact, that gritty, moody sound brought back some serious nostalgia. It just didn’t do quite enough to make me want to come back for another listen. I definitely recognized “Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl” from back in the day — they still hold up and were the clear highlights for me. The rest of the album had its moments but kind of blended together after a while. If you're into that era and sound, it’s worth a listen.
Great and iconic 90’s album.
Didn't think it was my thing at the start; Supervixen and Queer did nothing for me, but I liked it the more I listened. I liked the tune and harmonies in the 'pour my misery down' middle bit of Only Happy When It Rains. Cool intro to As Heaven Is Wide also. Sweet tune to the verses of Not My Idea. Vague Twin Peaks sound to riff in A Stroke of Luck. Pretty good. Vow, Stupid Girl, and Dog New Tricks are fun. My Lover's Box is pretty dull. Sweet tune to the chorus of Fix Me Now. Milk is pretty dull too - yet AGAIN a disappointment album-ender!

It's all medium. Fave:vow
Surprisingly good. Hooky. Strong. Probably derivative but of what I'm not sure. Pretty good, we'll see if it sticks in the mind and gets another listen. Prediction: No.
Never listened before and quite enjoyed
🐦
fun in parts, but definitely repetitive over all. I really respect the band's ability to try new things and stretch out into other genres, but you can see where every song is going ahead of time.
grungey, not unwelcome, SO 90s
This just didn’t do much for me, and I’ve always recoiled from the hit single “Stupid Girl.” (I do like the other single, “I’m Only Happy When It Rains.”) Nineties rock appears to bore me these days. I want to like it, especially with a vicious-sounding female lead and NIN producers. But I give it a big meh.
I don't really like this dark, negative vibe but for some days it can be relatable. The only song I like is I'm only happy when it rains but that's probably cuz I heard it before. The rest is okay.
Good songs and beat but not really my style
Want to like it, but it feels insanely dated to my ears.
It rocks, instant 90s rocks and instantly returned to my childhood. For some reason I feel like I'm seeing a Serial Experiments Lain episode with this album maybe because the band reminds me of Bôa. The only problem I have with this album is how the singer sings all the songs almost the same. But I really like the guitars and how it transitions from one song to another.
Uneven but entertaining
Not garbage - ok and of its time - part of my X-Gen DNA
Good sound
I know this album well having owned it for a long time. It's a great piece of indie pop/rock sitting in between The Cranberries and Skunk Anansie in terms of pop and rock.
Sounds like what it is, produce of producer Butch Vig. It’s that slick mid nineties rock sound. It was ok at the time and is ok now, not particularly memorable or anything special. Sold a shed load but then so did many similar sounding albums. Passed an hour while checking work emails this Monday morning, 3 Star.
I'm surprised how much it grew on me as the album went on. Didn't grow on me as much as The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars however.
3.5
Not really my thing but still had some good stuff there. 3 stars
Not garbage, but not not garbage either.
Some undeniably good songs. I personally don’t think Shirley sings with a ton of personality. The instrumentals are not impressive. I don’t think the pushing of grunge to a poppier song really took off in any meaningful way either. Jagged Little Pill is what this album wants to be.
Sure, there are some fine tracks on this.Album and garbage, certainly did tune into the early nineties.Teenage angst. But overall, I just feel like it's a little contrived. You got the female vocalist the band's called garbage.Their big song is talking about how they're only happy when it rains.I mean, it seems a bit dated it.Give me a break
Didn’t get to finish but enjoyed the vocals and the range of sounds
I really dig the sound. There are hypnotic electronic loops and hooks with a chunky glaze of alt rock guitar work. Singer fits into it all flawlessly. Some neat samples of older songs by other artists given new life and color here. Being born the year this released, I don’t recall what popular music sounded like but I’m sure this was a new and whole different approach and I appreciate that.
This album feels 10 years before its time, as though it fits right in with the edgy alt-rock of the early 2000s. Most of the tracks on this album would be at home in a sleek urban sci-fi/fantasy film along the lines of The Matrix or Underworld.
Pretty solid. Took a few listens. The songs I was most familiar with are among the best.
3.5/5
I’m just not a fan of female vocals
typical 90's jam tbh. Not bad but not my fav
All the components feels like something I would really love but somehow it isn't geling together for me. Some tracks are great, some not so much. I bet with the right atmosphere though I would love the whole thing. Only Happens When It Rains and Stupid Girlfeels like they belong in the soundtrack of a 90s film that would have regular cult showings at the Prince Charles Cinema, and I would eat it up
Garbage has never clicked for me for some reason I can't quite figure out
Hørte halve. Syns det var greit!
Handful of great tracks and the rest or ok. Solid 3.
.75 .5 .5 .5 .5
An excellent trip back in time - great riffs and brilliant vocals - enjoyable
I thought I would like this much more, but I guess not. I will say this sounds damn fresh for an album approaching 30 years old
very mid. two good songs on there, the rest very similar sounding
Some great tunes. Epitomises that 90s sound!
Two things combine in Garbage to make something unique - Shirley Manson’s semi-improvised lyrics and compelling personality-led performance, and Butch Vig and Steve Marker’s background in production and creative remixes for other artists. It’s a match made somewhere pretty close to heaven, if not quite in it. The eclecticism for which Garbage are justly famous might have made for a disjointed album but sonically it hangs together very coherently. My reservation is that it feels like they’re playing at the dark side; their natural home is cheery, cheesy pop and the apparent edginess is performance rather than conviction. I think this is the result of having a pair of producers on board who have a very strong view of what makes a record sell, which also explains the moments of rather clever-clever production gimmickry which litter this record. That said, you have to say it’s a very competent pop record.
This was fine
Garbage by the band Garbage was indeed not garbage.
Not Garbage but not my style. Does tend to be one liners that get repeated in a song that should be 2 minutes but get stretched out to like five minutes. 5/10
6.5/10 The first pleasant surprise of my 1001 albums project. Some pre-adolescent memories of this band that may have been based on little more than an aversion to the pink album cover made me think I hated Garbage. It's still not music I can imagine revisiting particularly often but as my taste has veered a little more towards harder rock of late I quite enjoyed this. Stupid Girl isprobably the best song on the album, but Milk was a real surprise given its trip hop vibe which I did not expect to find on a Garbage album. Listens: 2
A decent listen, can't get massively enthusiastic about it.
Damned good album. Stupid Girl is clearly the stand-out track, but it's all good. A good 3.5 star album.
Difficult album to review. There's a lot of genuinely great ideas here, but every single track feels a minute too long. The vocals are great, but it's hard to shake the feeling that a lot of the angst and cynicism is slightly fake.
This is an album that belongs on this list. Appropriate and great musicianship. Great and well structured songs. Sounds well produced. Not too long. Not a lot of filler. Shirley Manson in particular is excellent. I don’t like it. I couldn’t tell you why. All those points I made earlier are true. But I listened once, like I did in 1995 and thought. Nup. Putting on again today I thought maybe I’ll get it 30 years down the track. Nope. I don’t. I don’t blame others for liking and even loving this. I can even see why. 5 for its quality. -2 for the mark I’d give it. Let’s call it a three
After a variety of genres finally a rocks album which I never heard of before. I was excited about this one and it didn’t disappoint. It’s not too special or groundbreaking, but a good and steady album. Favourite songs: - Supervixen - Dog new tricks
I thought I was going to love this based on the first few tracks, but it kinda dipped into a pseudo goth 80s pop vibe and it kinda lost me. I really enjoyed the dynamic range in the first two tracks- the do-di-das mirroring the guitar riff was cool, the huge hooks to stripped back verses and vice versa were abrupt but I loved the shift. From there it got more poppy, but still felt like there was a grunge-y tinge to it, but they lost me when it started feeling really poppy and electronic. There's a couple pretty decent songs on here though.
It was fine. Nothing special.
Very 90s. The hits are still solid, I didn’t care much about the rest.
Better than I thought it would be, but the only real standouts to me are the radio hits. 3.5, rounding down.
#1 crush was the first song I heard on the Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack. I listened to that song endlessly, and it still holds up. I always appreciated Garbage, but I recognize now that my appreciation requires context. In the 1990’s there was a flood of women responding to the Grunge movement with a spanning the feminist spectrum: Tori Amos, Morrisette, Sarah McLachlin; Melissa Ethridge; Sheryl Crow; Shania Twain; Avril Lavigne, et al. Then Shirley Manson came on the scene with something different. It wasn’t Singer-Songwriter; it wasn’t Grunge; it wasn’t rock or pop. The entire band-Butch Vig, Duke Erickson, Steve Marker and Eric Avery-offered a blend of genres that defined our generation in their own way. Songs like I’m Only Happy When it Rains, and Stupid Girl took to the radio, while songs like Queer and Alien Sex Fiend were common at house parties. There is a reason most of these guys went on to produce or play on such amazing albums. I think this is a great album but I would have to see if that is a product of my age or universal across generations. I feel like being objective requires me to score lower than I normally would due to that feeling.
This ate my review, but the short version is I remember this hitting harder as a kid. Perfectly fine album, but better examples of the style are available.
Great alt rock album.
30 Jahre. Auweia ;)
I think its good...but this band always confuses me. Industrial indie grunge rock with a pop production. Just odd.
a pleasant surprise to be honest, i think i conflated Garbage and Hole (which is also a great band)
Good songwriting, but a bit one-note towards the end and the recording quality is atrocious
Well made 90's rock, good guitar work and vocals. I just don't enjoy this genre of rock that much, even some of its more solid examples are unlikely to rise above a 3/5.
Garbage is a weird mix of being outdated at the time of release and still sounding new today. The singles are the strongest songs on the record and apart from those I really wasn’t that drawn towards the record. It’s alright, but I thought I would’ve liked it even more.
It was alright
The mix of genres doesn't work on every song, but I loved As Heaven is Wide and Fix Me Now, and already knew and loved Only Happy When It Rains. The
Innovative style.
Decent enough album without being anything spectacular. I almost wish I hadn’t liked it so I could describe Garbage by Garbage as Garbage.
This album is good and I remember it being big at the time, but not convinced it belongs on this list?
Pretty good
I don’t know if I’ll remember many songs from this record, but I will remember how great it sounded and how well it was produced for 1995 (remaster aside). “Only Happy When It Rains” is probably my highlight for its anthemic chorus. “As Heaven Is Wide” has a nice mellow breakbeat and chunky guitar loop/bassline. “Stupid Girl” has a really sticky little piano refrain on loop that stuck with me through the album. “Milk” is a personal pick for me for its downtempo breaks, synth strings, and general dramatic rock-meets-electronica mood. Is this rock? Is this electronica? Who’s to say, but it’s worth a listen. Actually solid / 5.
Good, not great rep of the 90s.
only knew one track from this but i was pleasantly surprised by the variety, the dance influence is a lot more prevalent than i would have thought going in! cool album thank you for not being butt rock
Classic 90’s, good not great. This was one of those bands that had some highlights but the normal airplay was always enough for me. Never really had the need to dig deeper.
The two radio hits are definitely the standouts here. It was a fun trip down memory lane, but listening front to back I was surprised at just how much all songs sounded alike. Not much else to say.
This was on heavy rotation during my formidable high school years so very nostalgic. I liked their big hits but never really loved Garbage. Overall a decent listen with the generic 3 rating.
Fun trip down nostalgia lane but ultimately not a great album IMO. 3.5/5
Not my favorite
Meh. Pretty straightforward garage band rock. Very middle of the road.
Probably one where nostalgia gets the better of me. Generic mid90s rock, but was bought by pretty much everyone as it felt very different. Shirley Manson's powerful vocals and glossy mane definitely stood out in the sea of bang average Britpop era. Want to give it 4 stars for the happy memories, it's getting a 3 because there's a lot of filler outside the big singles.
im normal :]
Solid enough and couple of good tracks but overall nothing that exciting or interesting to me. I feel a bit of a lack of energy (may just be me) but doesn’t really work for me in this type of music.
17/02/25
Decent 90s alt rock albeit dated. Bit overproduced but a good listen.
I'd heard of Garbage before but didn't know a song. Decent music but not really my thing and not sure if I'd come back to it, but definitely good enough to be on this list.
Yeaaaaaaah the girls. 3.5 stars.
Solid 90s alt pop.
There is a lot variety on this album but it's not working for this band. I think with limited range you should stick with your strong points. 2,5/5. +1 for female vocal cause I love this shit - 1 for having a woman in band
7/10.
Only Happy When It Rains
OK
Some good songs on here but always thought it was overly produced.
Super solid. Not a lot of range but some of the songs ruled, her voice and style is great and obv butch vig records sound incredible
Chock full of essential bangers that no 90's revival party should be without.
Full of alternative sensibility from the 90s
Esperaba un poco más de locura. No termina de despegarse de otros actos. Nota: 3.0
Super average
somewhat familiar with this. Never really loved it
This is a fun album, not the greatest. I'd only heard 'Stupid Girl' before playing this record.
This is quite a good album, definitely. Only Happy When it Rains is amazing and Stupid Girl is also a great song.
Very much the 90s album, portishead vocals mixed with Nirvana riffs. Decent 3.5*
good
Neutral on this one. Not adding any of their songs to my playlist but can let most play through. Maybe.
This was actually more interesting than I thought it would be going into it. I enjoyed it.
This is... odd. Although, I just generally don't like the vibes or sound of most 90s music. It has some really good moments, though! Other than its good moments, it's just a fine 90s rock album with some heavy produced moments. It doesn't really feel like anything special, though. Favorite Song(s): Queer
Made me feel like I was browsing in Spencer’s Gifts all over again.
Enjoyed this beyond the singles.
has a vibe but not engaging
Don't have anything to really say here. Just an overall solid if a bit unmemorable album. 6/10
A little more tuneful and a little less raucous than your average ‘90s crankiness, but perhaps a little less clever and a little less memorable than the best, as well.
3.4 2x orig 51m and 1x 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition/Remastered 1h24m
++: Queer, Stupid Girl, My Lover's Box +: Supervixen, As Heaven Is Wide, Not My Idea, Vow +-: Only Happy When It Rain, A Stroke of Luck, Dog New Tricks, Fix Me Now, Milk 7,0/10
I liked it. Not mingblowing but certainly was nice to listen to.
I like the female lead singer a lot. It’s definitely grungey and not the most uplifting music ever which would make it hard to listen to on a consistent basis.
I should like everything about this, but it doesn’t really connect for some reason. It reminded me of The Smashing Pumpkins and Hole, but I would prefer to listen to those bands instead. It’s well made and I would never complain to hear songs from it, but it wouldn’t be my first choice. Favorite songs were Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains, Not My Idea, and Stupid Girl.
Alright album
3.5
Such a huge album at the time, everyone had it and it was all over the radio. A cool chick fronting a loud grunge band with a hooky but not a sellout sound, perfect mix in 1995. Influential, a little groundbreaking and still getting airplay today. Hits "Supervixen", "Only Happy When It Rains", "Stupid Girl", "Vow" & "Queer" owned the radio that year. It's been years since I listened to this album, it was nice to re-hear "Not My Idea" which is a unique tune. The production on this album is so good, not surprising with Butch Vig on the boards. Too much of it sounds similar but it was their signature sound. Staying power, hits, influence on the sound at the time & the mark that Shirley Manson left on the industry all point to this being a T1001 album.
Took me back to my late teens early 20s. Great singles
The singles off this are pretty great; I especially like Stupid Girl. The rest isn't quite as strong and doesn't hold my attention as much. An upper three.
Solid, dependable 90's alternative, though not something I'll go back to often. 3.5/5
It sounds interesting but I can’t get super into it.
With 90s music it's very hit or miss for me. This album is kind of in the middle. Maybe I missed the boat on this kind of moody rock music but it's a little slow for me. I tend to go more on the indie and alt rock side and this wasn't my favorite but I think the talent is definitely there on this project. The composition was interesting and the vocals were great. Decent project to me.
