David Bowie meets dance anthem
Great Album. Really Enjoyed
I wish I would’ve checked out this album way back when I heard William Shatner’s cover of “Common People” in 2003, but I don’t know that I would’ve appreciated it fully then.
LOVE!!!!! Punk-y but really chill vibe
Was torn between 4 and 5 here. Objectively I think we've heard better albums, but I got more enjoyment out of this than some others. I'd only heard Common People before listening and really liked that song, but it was even better in context.
Brutal
So far I only knew Common People by Pulp, a song I really love. Turns out, I very much enjoyed the rest of the album too! Will probably check out other albums by Pulp :-)
Great way to start the day
So good
This is an album from my teenage years. It’s disquieting and challenging to revisit the past in a way. I also can’t sing this in key even though I know all the words. I blame Mr Cocker. I like how Pulp’s albums circumvent what the arrangement of a pop song is like through his spoken parts.
Heel goed common people is het nummer van de plaat, maar de rest is minstens even goed. 9,5 vandaar een 5/5
The best Britpop album. I think it stands up better than anything by Blur or Oasis from that era
Oasis are the best band of the 90's, but this is the best album of the 90's. Mis-Shapes - 10/10 Pencil Skirt - 7.5/10 Common People - 10/10 I Spy - 10/10 Disco 2000 - 10/10 Live Bed Show - 8/10 Something Changed - 10/10 Sorted For E's and Wizz - 9/10 F.E.E.L... - 9/10 Underwear - 10/10 Monday Morning - 10/10 Bar Italia - 9/10 Great tunes packed with witty lyrics from start to finish.
Common People" Released: 22 May 1995 "Mis-Shapes" / "Sorted for E's & Wizz" Released: 25 September 1995 "Disco 2000" Released: 27 November 1995 "Something Changed" Released: 25 March 1996
This is an essential Brit Rock album.
hell yes. I am such a bitch for this kind of brit-pop and this was a great example of it in this album. so many strong tracks and “F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E” was soooo G.O.O.D. the songs were funny quirky catchy and just really well composed. the vocalist had a nice voice too.
This is a classic album, not my favorite by them, but still a banger
The superlatives seem to be deserved on first listen. Of course, I'm a sucker for string arrangements, and there seem to be good ones here. The opening of F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. stood out especially in that regard. Other than that, loved the pop accessibility, loose concept, and vocals.
Indeed!
note to self: come back to this (i'm not sure if it's good/great)
I’ve listened to this at least 10 times before, it’s a perfect Britpop album and I have it as 9/10 on RYM. Extremely Recommended. Favorite Song is Monday Morning.
This album is actually very enjoyable, so fun. And there are also some interesting moments. The mixture between soft rock and a popish side really works very well with Pulp, even if some songs can feel a bit bland or insipid. But, overall, this album is really great, with some really nice songs and, sure, a very enjoyable record to listen to.
Goated record Didn’t realise he was such a creepy guy til I spy. He plays that character very well
This was all new to me, and I liked it quite a lot. It's a real shame Pulp didn't get the same stateside exposure as Oasis and Blur... this would have slapped so hard back in '95. There are a few tracks that could be cut to make this a stronger, tighter product, but that's really just nit-picking. The majority of this is great. Note to self: based on the wildly variant quality of albums on this list that are labeled "Britpop", you should ignore this tag just as you would the equally useless and generic "Rock" label...
This was fun. Lacked a bit of versatility, I did get a little bored half way through. It brought me back by the end though. I can see myself repeating this a few more times.
This album makes a strong case for Pulp being deserving of the best BritPop band of the 90’s. More clever than Oasis. Weirder than Blur. More sophisticated than everyone else. Heir to the throne of bands like the Kinks, the Jam and the Smiths as chroniclers of life in Britain. Jarvis Cockers lyrics are raw and pointed. The music is simple but bombastic at the same time arrangement of spikey synths, sweeping guitars and drums building into crescendos like some kind of bizarre, art show musical production. Pulp doesn’t get their well deserved recognition, but they are great and this album is their magnum opus. 4.5
One of the defining albums of both 1995 but of the entire Britpop period, putting Pulp into the bigger league of Indie bands who were now 'above ground' in the mainstream. 'Common people' was the signature song of the time before 'wonderwall' came out and Disco 2000 also got considerable airplay. The album is a consistent set of songs about the seedier elements of society and sorted for Es and Whizz is an eloquent admission of the unspoken drug culture of the 90s. On today's listen it does rank as a classic and one can hear the likes of Scott Walker, Bryan Ferry and David Bowie in Jarvis's writing. It's working class people being clever again - never favoured by the establishment!
Above average brit-pop. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.
Pretty good, not sure I have much to add that I didn't say earlier on "This Is Hardcore", but nice '90s / 2000s sound and good listen.
ganz okay
7 - GOOD
Common Ppl remains one of THE songs of the 90s. Album good back up.
Good fun album with a bunch of songs ill continue to listen to. Never really heard BritPop until now, its not bad. Some of the lyrics are a bit questionable but they are british
rlly cool
this is quite good
Some sort of line could be drawn from The Kinks and Squeeze to Pulp. Full of songs about the disappointment of suburban life, sex and relationships. It's like what you might get if Morrisey had an ounce of talent.
Trotzdem
The high points justify a 4. Inconsistent but when it’s great it’s great.
Honestly I was expecting better but common people is enough to get it at less 4 stars on its own
You win, Doug
This is how you start and end an album. So refreshing to hear a good album exactly of its time. A lot of songs that should have been bigger hits. My very obvious favs: - "I spy" is like an opera piece, or a James Bond theme song... - "Disco 2000" drummer understood the assignment. early y2k panic? Great songs, catchy, has layers but not overly produced. More of this and less jazz please
Only Jarvis Cocker could sell an album about resentment against the upper class, being horny and being horny while resenting the upper class, and then have it contain multiple of the most anthemic songs of the 90's.
Interesting. Catchy, boppy and some weirdness that you don't tend to get on modern albums.
Fun and interesting slice of 90s britpop life. Quite a few hits on this but some really dodgy lyrics. 4/5
Britpop is a hit or miss (more miss to be honest) with me, and I know this particular album is held in high regard so it was nice when it popped up to check it out. Pretty good, must be said, even if I don't necessarily listen to this kind of music.
Different Class was a super cool album I'd never heard of! Kind of spoken word storytelling over poppy electronic/rock music. It's a bit creepy, intruiging, and overall cool. There's some pretty hard guitars here too and I really like the electronic pieces where they come in. This is the kind of 90s music that I love. It's weird but still accessible on the surface. It sounds older than it is, yet still like something that could be done today in the 2020s by someone purposely going for a "retro" sound, but I dont think anyone has the balls to do something like this these days. Standouts on this listen are "Mis-Shapes" "Common People" and "Sorted for E's & Wizz" Yeah, really cool album, goes on a bit long but there's a lot to digest here. A little too much talking for me, but it's a pretty strong 4/5.
Kind of a cousin of Pink Floyd, but less serious. Quite enjoyable!
Overshadowed by the incredible singles. Disco 2000 and Common People are some of my favourite Brit Pop songs. The rest of the album doesn’t reach those lofty heights but still a bop.
Underwear is such a good song. A great 90s rock album.
heard some of these jams before and enjoyed em, nice to hear the rest of it
That Jarvis Cocker, he's reet randy. Truly the best (and the only tolerable) Britpop because it understands that music is to be danced to in the kitchen x
I enjoyed this one!
Whether this album decides to be pure unfettered fun, melancholic, or anything in between, it remains an absolute joy of a listen. I'll be returning to this often.
Great album. Would be four stars alone just for one of my favorite songs Common People. Just great.
was initially going to give this a three but the last half of the album ended very strong. There are some genuinely good writing. I’m not a fan of some of the vocals, but it works for the style of music really good stuff. I’d come back to this.
A beautiful, masterfully written set of tracks dealing with wealth inequality, unrequited love, the search for meaning, existential dread, drugs, gender dynamics, aka the struggles of "Common People". I was really blown away how genuinely deep and relatable each track was without ever feeling overdramatic or out of touch. It's a little disheartening how the socioeconomic commentary rings truer than ever over 30 years later, but it is a testament to the authenticity of the writer(s). The last couple tracks hit pretty hard for me as someone in their mid-20s struggling with the monotony and meaninglessness of a responsible, comfortable life. This isn't the kind of album I think you would put on randomly in the car or at the gym, but it is one you will think about every so often and find validation and catharsis in.
Archetypal Brit pop album. I couldn’t place who the voice reminded me of and then it came to me… Suede. But these folks were doing it long before Suede. And really better. You can hear stuff in this record that was most definitely influential. Common People is a great tune. Really liking this record… very solid. Surprised I kinda missed this group in the 90s. Squarely in a genre I enjoy. Can really hear a Bowie influence in this. But I actually like this better. Will be relistening to this one! Good find.
Some really good tracks on this album
Who doesn’t love a lil British invasion
Super fun, it was a great listen.
Reminds me of Arcade Fire (which came much later). I knew the song "Common People" (though maybe I was more familiar with the William Shatner version?). My friends note that the singer does this low/speaking "seductive" voice which just comes off sleazy and a little like "business time" - pretty funny and I totally see that. But the melodies are pretty good, especially the first track "Mis-Shapes".
Possibly their best one.
Hay un aire a sarcasmo y bizarreada que me encanta. La primer mitad del disco me encantó. Nota: 4.3
I liked this one. There were some weird moments, but overall I enjoyed the Brit pop influences. 4/5
7/10 Very surprising album. Really liked it.
Enjoyed this album quite a lot. Love the kitchen-sink lyrics; very Kinks influenced and a definite nod to Bowie with the vocal style. Overall, pretty good. 4
Pulp: Different Class FOUR STARS I wish I had given Different Class a closer listen, because I found it to be universally excellent. I cannot be certain if my casualness may have overlooked flaws in the record, or perhaps missed elements to make this record a classic. It came out of the gate with the piano fueled “Mis-Shapes.” The big hits “Common People” and “Disco 2000” deserve their popularity as both charge ahead, then add soaring choruses that must have been perfect for stadium shows in the era. Except for spoken word passages for “I Spy”, I found the slower tunes to be terrific pop. My favorite was “Something Changed” which utilized strings quite effectively. Nowhere on the album did I find whining or cheeky sarcasm. I might be a poor listener, and overlooked these traits, but I enjoyed the confident and direct style that I heard in the lyrics as well as the music. Even when lamenting a situation, Jarvis Cocker never drifted into self-pity. I felt I was on a ride with an interesting observer rather than a forlorn Gen Xer. Kudos to Pulp. I will definitely play this one in the future.
I have always found Jarvis Cocker to be an odd lad out of UK music scene, particularly in the 90s. I feel that represented in the album, which at times can be very interesting, and other times abnormal, mainly his voice, which sometimes works for me and sometimes doesn't. The music as a whole is fairly good, though can sometimes be repetitive, which could be blamed on the runtime being a tad too long for my taste. Most songs were enjoyable, but as an album I feel it can miss in some spots. Definitely listen to these songs in the future, but unsure about revisiting as an album. Favorites: "Something Changed" "Live Bed Show" "Disco 2000" (already a favorite prior to listen) "Underwear" and "Monday Morning"
Pulp always stood apart from the other Brit Pop era bands with more of a Bowie/Roxy Music/Bunnymen vibe than the Beatles/stones/kinks gang. This is a strong record, better for me than any Oasis record and arguably better top to bottom than many Blur records. And much much hornier than both
Wow! I did not know this album, or this band, at all. Shame on me! The sounds, including the vocals, are absorbing. And the lyrics are smart and quirky. I’ll get back to this one. I’m nearly 400 albums into this project, and this is the first new-to-me album that has *grabbed* me so. Swoon.
This album was easy on the ear and Common People should be considered as one of the greatest songs of the nineties.
Call me predictable, but how can you not love Pulp and Different Class, with its timeless belters (Common People, Disco 2000), London/British culture references peppered throughout, Jarvis Cocker’s iconic vocals (at times sounding like a drunk man at karaoke consoling himself with a Stella). Listening to the whole album opened my eyes to the singalong friendly, polished songs like Misshapes, Live Bed Show and FEELINGCALLEDLOVE. There is enough variety from the guitars, tempo and moods to keep you thoroughly entertained, whilst giving you nostalgia for the era of britpop that felt dominated by Oasis and Blur. Long live Pulp
Toppen, och med ultrabangern Common People!
Great album...very close to giving it 5 stars. Funny lyrics and catchy tunes - and somehow never takes itself too seriously.
Bowie wannabe, but that's not new insight. At least they make it a bit fun.
Not the best Brit pop band, but a very good album with a couple of banging tracks.
She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge Nice album, memorable songs.
Solid 4, top tier britpop. Great tunes with dry humour
Escuchado, buen disco y grupo
interesting mix of indie, punk, rock, dance
Приятная поп музыка без уважения к женщинам

pretty good!!! didn't get bored
There was a point in the mid 90’s when being a gangly myopic geek in a bad suit was cool and I thank Jarvis for his work in this area. Because the aforementioned gangly geek had a cultural touchstone. Fortunately, it’s also an album of excellent quality. The singles are obviously stand outs but for me the best pulp song has always been a FEELING CALLED LOVE. It’s like the novels about awkward types falling in lust awkwardly I read in the 90’s made into a four minute song
Fun album with witty banter
so close to being a 5. makes me feel patriotic about being british in the least reform way possible.
"Common People" is one of my favorite songs. It actually affects me pretty strongly, a song that's both infectious pop music but also angry, in my opinion one of the best popular songs of the 90s. "Yeah? I don't see anyone else smiling here. Are you sure? you wanna live like common people..." But I have never listened to an entire Pulp album before. This is an example of why I'm doing this project, to force myself to listen to more Pulp than just "Common People." And hey, this is a pretty interesting album. I wasn't completely taken by everything, but most of it was about as forceful and memorable as its top hit track. I'd give this 4 stars now, but that could increase on future listens.
These guys rule. Common People deserves its fame, what a wonderful piece of writing. Always happy to belt along to that tune.
This guy is, as I believe the brits say, a “wanker.” His vocal style is evidence of the Bowie-fication of British music, and the whisper thing irked me. That said, something about this album charmed me. The lyrics are really clever in a way that helps make up for the whiny themes. Common People is obviously a major banger, and Disco 2000 and Something Changed really caught me too. Great storytelling and the cover/title is sick.
Review - always thought I hated Pulp but maybe I was just indoctrinated as a kid. This was a good album and I'm interested in looking into their other stuff Rating - 8/10 Need to hear? YES
into it
4 out of 5. There were some good songs here besides Common People.
Wildly entertaining!
First of all, "Jarvis Cocker", that's certainly a name. Different Class is a pretty fine album. Magically not grating from "Jarvis Cocker" 's voice. The songs execute well that reminds me of XTC with bombastic 90s production (the Britpop styling). Most of the songs are pretty good or fine at worst. Disco 2000 sounds too much like Gloria for my liking., This would be my definition of a high floor low ceiling album, where in the end being entertained is good even if the product is average at worst. I'd say we can't all be extraordinary all the time. The British (who made Britpop) say this is the defining Britpop record, and I think it's better at Oasis in executing whatever Britpop meant. Oasis appealed too well to Americans anyways, and you can't say that about Blur WHOO HOOOOO. Ahem. Mr. Jarvis and his band of British people wrote on the back of the record, "We don't want no trouble, we just want the right to be different. That's all.". Sir, if you were an American you would never need to say that. That's what makes it Britpop, I say this as an American who prefers other British music movements that were going on at the same time. So yeah, not bad. There's a little something there for everyone mostly. This is at least better than Oasis, I still haven't been selected to hear Blur yet. WHOO HOOOOO
Красиво, наполненная музыка
4,3 1. "Common People" 2. "I Spy" 3. "Disco 2000"
Right off the bat, The Cure’s influence is very clear. The Police also. Some ska portions too which is interesting, especially in Monday Morning. Overall it’s a really interesting album and a really good example of some of the best that time and place had to offer. And also it’s relentlessly horny lmao
Quite good! I love the song common people but the rest of the album packs a punch as well.
Pleasant surprise this one. Wasn't too sure what I was getting myself into. Just knew it was British and from the 90s. I guess I could see something like oasis. Not really what I got but maybe some crossover. It feels almost new new wave. Still using that framework but its not the 80s anymore. But it does still fit on with other brit rock stuff from the time. The mix afterwords threw on stuff like blur and radiohead. I notoriously dislike the 2nd one but blur is great. It fits though. I ended up saving like 5 songs and that shocked me from the get go. Lots of good stuff. It does drag a bit in the middle where it gets a bit too slow and quiet for my liking but its bookended with the best stuff. Great set of tracks hete and maybe I need to do some more digging with this band as long as its of this sound an quality
Best Track - "Disco 2000"
One of the last major pillars of Britpop I had yet to pay proper attention to. I knew "Common People" and thought it was absolutely fantastic, but I never leaned into the desire to hear this one until today. I stand by the idea that Britpop reached its collective peak in Suede's first 4 years (1992-1996) and Pulp is the only band that seems to approach that. Glammy, sleek, sexual, sardonic, sarcastic and a little grimy when it needs to be. The hits are where this album peaks for me but the whole thing is a really cohesive work.
I own this and have listened to it all multiple times
Ok, sm kr excited. Poznam en komad s tega albuma, and I love it. Tko da upam, da bo cel album fletn. Dobra naslovnica. Začetek je obetajoč, so far mi je super ("Mis-Shapes"). "Common People" je še kr a banger (moj poznan od prej komad). Ah, nevermind, "Disco 2000" tud poznam. Also a banger. "Something Changed" je kul. V glavnem, všečno. Majo svoj sound, ki se ga držijo; also, men je tole bolj vrhunec Britpopa, kot pa Oasis ali Blur. Všeč mi je glas od Jarvisa, besedila so mi zabavna.
I really enjoyed listening to this album, it’s just a good vibe to listen to. However, I only really liked the songs, I didn’t love every song. That is what kept me from giving this album a 5.
Had you asked me yesterday if I knew who Pulp was, I would have said, "I don't really listened to their music, but of course I know them." Apparently, that would have been untrue. Embarrassingly, I think I may have actually been confusing them with Blur. Anyways, I really enjoyed this album after a couple listens. Common People is great and I've definitely heard it somewhere before. There were a lot of interesting influences throughout the album from disco to 70s pop to 80s new wave. There was also a pretty clear Bowie influence throughout the album that I enjoyed up to a certain point, but it did get to a point where it seemed like he might be trying too hard to be Bowie. And when he wasn't trying to be Bowie, he was trying so hard to be sexy, but his whisper singing just comes off as creepy. The awful lyrics in Pencil Skirt didn't help. I've seen it pointed out that he's playing a character and being sarcastic, but it doesn't change the fact that his singing at times makes me uncomfortable.
1001 Albums Vol. 0032: Different Class ============================================================ Introduction: ...And here's yet another album that I'm extremely knowledgeable of. It's quite...strange how many of these albums that I'm getting early on. I mean, that just ensures that there will be plenty of discoveries later on, but it just feels weird to...you know...be able to name less and less of what's to come with pretty much every album....It's the more obscure masterpieces that I keep generating too....Oh yeah, this album is a masterpiece, at least I remember it being a masterpiece from the last time I listened to it. I first heard it actually not too long ago...maybe a few months ago. Anyway, I first heard this album a few months ago through stereo speakers and remember thinking something along the lines of, "What the hell is this?" I remember thinking that the melodies were weird, the production was a bit off, and vocals sounded...well...weird....Maybe I thought that the vocals sounded a bit too "poppy" as well. Anyway, I ended up wanting to listen to parts of the album again on Spotify to see just how "weird" they actually were...and I ended up falling in love with the album after that. I don't know what it was. Maybe I simply had a closed mind when I heard it on stereo...or maybe the stereo audio quality just sucked, I don't know. Nevertheless, I found the album to be great and have since...come to consider it a masterpiece. I really don't even need to l-...alright fine! I will anyway. Not that I'm complaining. It's been a bit since I last heard this album anyway. That being said, I'll quickly spit a few things that I remember about this album right here to help give a pretty vague and general idea as to why it's a masterpiece before I go into more detail in the conclusion. Anyway, this album, Different Class, was released in 1995 by a pretty "obscure" band by the name of Pulp. Obscure is in quotations because I could see one making some pretty strong arguments against that statement. Anyway, this album is considered to be great for a variety of reasons. Firstly, this album is simply just...extremely well-written and extremely clever in many aspects. The song quality is great, the instrumentation is great, the vocals are great, and just so much about it is great. It's very sophisticated, clever, and sensible across pretty much the whole record. Secondly, the album just came at the perfect time to feel relevant to culture as a whole. Britpop, the album's main genre, was experiencing massive recognition during the mid-90's, and this album simply felt like a huge cultivation of that entire movement in one record. I mean...there's just so much great about this album that I just...can't really mention yet because it will shorten my conclusion. I just...have to hold myself back from praising this masterpiece for now...for now...I will later though...but I actually have to relisten to it first to be able to do that. Let's do just that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Track 1: Mis-Shapes: 10/10 Track 2: Pencil Skirt: 8/10 Track 3: Common People: 11/10 Track 4: I Spy: 10/10 Track 5: Disco 2000: 11/10 Track 6: Live Bed Show: 8/10 Track 7: Something Changed: 9/10 Track 8: Sorted For E's & Wizz: 9/10 Track 9: F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E: 9/10 Track 10: Underwear: 9/10 Track 11: Monday Morning: 9/10 Track 12: Bar Italia: 9/10 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Conclusion: Well...this album is just as great as I remember it being. Even listening to it with a more keen and critical ear didn't change my perception of it...at all really. Yes, there are undoubtedly some pretty weird segments pertaining to this album's music and lyrics across its runtime, yet these segments are honestly...not bad at all when you really start to get a grasp on them. And...to be fair as well, the weird nature of this album helps compliment its overall theme....I'll get back to that later though. Musically, there is quite a lot to talk about on this album. Pretty much every song on this album could technically fall under a different sub-category of music. I mean, at its absolute core the album consistently features Britpop. That being said, you'll find various mixings of Art Rock, songs that lean a bit more towards Pop Rock, and so on throughout the album. Now, I have stated many times before in many previous reviews that albums that fluctuate too much in terms of their music are generally not good. It just creates a very disconnected feel within the album's music and makes the album sound as if it's a compilation and not an actual studio album. Literally the one exception that I can think of to this rule is The White Album by The Beatles, but that's besides the point. That album actually works because The Beatles were undergoing a split as a band and...actually, I'm sure you know why that album worked. That's extremely off topic anyway. Anyway, this album on the other hand...is literally perfect in achieving musical variety all while keeping a central theme. It genuinely feels as if this album was right on the border of having a bit too much variety to the point where the tracks would have felt a bit disconnected from each other, yet the music manages to achieve a certain cohesion throughout due to a combination of production, consistent vocals, and so on. I mean, this is literally the perfect amount of experimentation that an album should have within its music. Every track feels uniquely distinct but tied together through small elements that add up over its runtime. At least for me, it's genuinely great. I could see someone believing that this album doesn't have quite enough cohesion...but they're just...wrong, alright? You won't change my opinion on this matter. Anyway, besides the cohesion, the music itself is pretty great and well-produced as well. You'll find plenty of songs on here that follow typical Britpop structure and others that are extremely experimental with the genre...so experimental that Feeling Called Love literally scared me the first time the chorus kicked in....Look, I had to mention that somewhere and I couldn't think of anywhere else to mention it.Like I said, before, the music can get pretty odd at times, yet this strangeness is simply something that should grow on the listener as they make their way through the album. Additionally, this strangeness, while being somewhat characteristic to Pulp, works extremely well with this album's overall theme. As the name of it implies, the album's theme has to do with...different, less-accepted "classes" of people. Well, it really has more to do with outcasts, misfits, or...weirdos, but the name of the album still does a good job implying this regardless. Anyway, this is where the lyrics of the album come into play. Now, I will admit, had the album not had the central theme that it did, many of these song's lyrics would be...quite terrible to say the least. You have songs like I Spy which literally gives a first-person perspective from a stalker who has sex with an upper-class woman. The lyrics kinda imply rape as well but statements from the band confirm that this is actually a misconception. You have Pencil Skirt which is about sex...and kinda implies rape too but statements prove this is a misconception. You have Underwear too which is about sex and maybe rape but not actually...and...yeah, the lyrics aren't really the best outside of context. That being said, we're not judging an album outside of context. With context in mind, these lyrics are...actually pretty good. For the most part, they give a detailed, first-person perspective into the minds of people who face complex relationships, shame from society, and sexual tensions that most people around the world really wouldn't understand all that well. It's almost as if every song is meant to be a small tale from someone who's actions aren't accepted by society. I mean, these songs just give a very personal and sometimes creepy perspective on subjects that most people don't fully understand. Now, there are a few songs most people can absolutely relate to as well. Such songs come from the perspective of the lower or working class and feature themes such as the upper-class romanticizing the lower class's situation, the dread of having to return to work, and the even partying and the effects that it can have on one. I mean, this album simply feels as if it offers many different perspectives from many different types of people in a way that just...works. It feels as if this album establishes some relatability by providing an economic or mental status that's relatable to the listener, and then successfully expands their perspectives on other types of people due to the relatability that it has established. I mean, the themes of this album simply work...in every way possible. Like I said before, the oddness of the music contributes to this as well and...well...everything really just works on this album. I mean, even Jarvis Cocker's vocals work in unison with the central theme as well due to their...unique and distinct nature. Also, Cocker's ability to perfectly capture the creepiness or normality of the various subjects presented in this album through his voice is just...great as well. I really don't see enough people praising this man's vocals. They're great. Just great. And...all of these factors that I've mentioned come together to form a genuine masterpiece of an album...another masterpiece. Again, this album really shouldn't be as good as it is, yet the many small decisions, such as literally naming the album "Different Class" add up to make something that is genuinely great...which is something that I've really been saying a bit too much for the amount of albums that I've generated. I mean, my pile of albums that I consider to be masterpieces is bigger than albums that I consider to be bad or alright. How have I gotten this lucky so far? I have no idea. I'm seriously starting to think that this site has some rule for its generation in which it generates a "bad" or "alright" album before guaranteeing that a masterpiece gets generated to keep the listener interested throughout their journey....Alright, that's kinda a joke, but my luck has still been insane. Let's just keep going forward and see what we get next. ============================================================ Different Class: 9/10 Song Average: 9.3/10
Lots of fun
Great album, I love the vibe and I will through some of the songs into my daily listen.
You Wanna Live Like Common People 1001 Albums Generator 263 (4/6/2026) I really enjoyed Pulp's album, This Is Hardcore, but I remember finding it to be a bit too long and dragging on at times. Different Class is much tighter, being almost 20 minutes shorter than its successor, and it is better for it. This is also Pulp doing what they are best known for, which is glammy britpop, as opposed to the more theatrical stuff in This Is Hardcore. This fact is exemplified in the two biggest hits on the album, Common People and Disco 2000, which are both equal parts poppy and rockin. I thought the opener Mis-Shapes was also a great example of the Pulp sound. I will admit that some songs here are just too horny for me, with Pencil Skirt being the worst offender of this. I also think that I Spy and F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. are quite boring and sometimes uncomfortable and the album would be better without them. Look, besides those complaints, I actually think that Different Class is one of the best Britpop albums I've had on this list so far. A bit flawed, but definitely deserving of its cult status. 4/5. Favs: Mis-Shapes Common People Disco 2000 Least Fav: I Spy
Really good 8/10, especially in the middle and further
3.5
Mis-Shapes - 4.5/5 Pencil Skirt - 4/5 Common People - 5/5 I Spy - 4/5 Disco 2000 - 4.5/5 Live Bed Show - 4/5 Something Changed - 4/5 Sorted for E's and Wizz - 4/5 F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E - 4/5 Underwear - 4/5 Monday Morning - 4/5 Bar Italia - 4/5 I think the generator may have screwed me over with Pulp since I got the album most associated with the so-called "hangover" period of Britpop in "This is Hardcore". I was a bit more receptive to see what this era of music was like at its peak, and this album surely delivered. Common People is an anthemic track that seems like its better than every other run-of-the-mill Britpop song of the time. Unfortunately I got the best early so this will mean the rest of the genre will be worse. Overall: 4/5 Favorites: Mis-Shapes, Common People, Disco 2000
7/10
Light 4. A lot of awesome songs and I love the 90s British alternative sound, but a few skips for me as well.
I was expecting one great song and a bunch of average alt rock for the rest like most other Britpop albums I've heard. I sort of got that. Common People is definitely the best thing on this album. The rest exceeded expectations though. Nothing else is really great, but most of the rest of the tracks are above average. It's worth keeping the album.
Pulpy
Now this is brilliant: a band I’ve never heard of before, but this (fifth) album actually turns out to have two global hits on it! Apart from that, it’s clearly British pop music, and there’s nothing wrong with that. So keep surprising me... :-)
This was brilliant. While I would still maintain the William Shatner version of "Common People" is legitimately better, I had never heard this full album before and thought it was dynamite. Great vibe, interesting lyrics, good guitar. Look forward to listening to it again.
Pretty good but I hate British people
Good album. Very Bowie.
Very good, few belters on there for sure
I liked this one! I enjoyed the diversity on the album, I didn't feel like I was listening to the same song over and over again. I was trying to pinpoint another artist they sounded like the whole time, though. I was getting early Radiohead and The Smiths vibes. I will definitely revisit.
Such a cool record, mixing glam and britpop and new wave styles. Jarvis Cocker is an exceptional songwriter and really charismatic as a frontman. Every track here is great and it's really close to a 5* for me, there are 2 big 10/10 tracks - I think one more might tip it over the edge so I'll give it some time
Never heard of this band before. Really enjoyed it. Gave me a David Bowie vibe at times. Highlights: Mis-Shapes, Common People, Disco 2000, I Spy and Something Changed. 4.5
(85/100)
I like the sounds and vibes a lot. A few of the songs are weaker than others.
Enjoyable, different and interesting
This is a great record. Forgot how great it was actually.
Pretty good.
I really enjoyed this one!
Probably the best Britpop album, which -- to be fair -- isn't saying much. But it is quite a good album, with Cocker's humour drenched in addictive rhythms.
Great record. Disco 2000 is a namgwe
Sorted for E's and Wizz
Favorite track(s): Mis-Shapes, Common People, Disco 2000, Something Changed
Sexy britpop, great fun
this one surprised me? the drama! the class commentary and storytelling! the organ and orchestra! not a perfect 5 for me perhaps because of (some of) the more poppy bits which is weird for me to say as like a pop girly. do i even understand my own taste? not really. fave tracks: common people, i spy, live bed show, feeling called love, monday morning
This album would probably rated higher if someone was listening and rating while high. Some of it reminds me of David Bowie, some reminds me of The Cure. Disco 2000 was a great song! All the songs work well together. I don’t know that I’ve heard Pulp before but this would be the kind of music teenage me would have loved in the 90s, when the album came out.
I knew Common People coming in. The rest was pretty enjoyable too, I like that sound.
4/5
A handful of absolute classics on here. Great to hear it again.
Some songs good, at least one song weird...
Some good standout songs

I feel like I have an apology to make. I’m sorry, ’90s rock: you actually can produce good music. I mean, Common People is a great song, hand down. Maybe it is the hit of the decade? It was still playing at indie clubs in the 2010s; it really is a great song. I always thought of Pulp as a one-hit wonder, and while that might be true, the rest of their songs are quite good too. It feels like a mix of Morrissey and Arctic Monkeys. I can’t decide if it’s pretentious or not. Most of “I Spy” is spoken word, but it feels a bit tongue in cheek. I enjoyed it a lot. In conclusion, there’s “Common People” and several other decent songs. I think that warrants four stars.
pretty banging tbh
Obviously, I knew Common People from this, but I've never really listened to any of the other songs. Some of them are outstanding. My favourites were "Something Changed" and "Pencil Skirt". Jarvis Cocker's voice is also weirdly calming.
любимые песни с альбома: • common people • I spy • something changed • mis-shapes
Really enjoyed this album!
really need to get into that shit
7/10… britpop / indie disco / *1995
Hard to listen to the whole album as I know the singles so well although I wasn’t a fan at the time. This is a solid album
First time I've heard the full full album, but I'm a bit of a casual fan so knew maybe half the tracks? Definitely one of the best if not the best britpop album (certainly not best if The Bends counts). Plenty of great tracks throughout (I liked Feelingcalledlove which I'd not heard before) Common People is one of those perfect songs where the lyrics are witty, with some quite unique social commentary about the class divide, but then completes the package by being an absolute banger that you want to belt out every lyric to if you're lucky enough to hear it in the right setting
Think Id put hardcore ahead of this but Pulp are much better than I gave them credit for back in the day. Knew the hits but hadn't heard the rest of it, though I think it's very much in the same direction of a wry take on British life and class. A bit like suede, the britpop label (ie sounding a bit like blur) is much more apparent when you take a whole album. Wouldn't ever be a nailed down favourite but would happily listen again.
I’m glad they were in their 30s cause the lyrics were kind of weirdly mature. It’s a decent britpop album with lots about shagging girls but common people makes it a 4
Great tunes and multiple lyrics caught my attention in a way that suggested I would appreciate this even more upon further listening and deeper familiarity.
Unlike many of the other Blur/Oasis clones of this era, I enjoyed listening to this.
I really liked this album. One of those bands that would be hard to rip off, not just because they blend a lot of styles in their music, but because the lead singer's lyrical style is so unique, The blending of insight and humor and sex is something I noticed immediately from having heard other newer songs, and I was like "oh it's that guy". He's like a dirty Elvis Costello. Their big hit (Common People) is on this album, and you can listen to that a million times and it will still be just as good and just as true as the first time. A lot of the other songs are just as memorable. I've listened to it about 2.5 times as of writing this, and it's still opening up. A great effort. 4/5
this was fun. brit pop is lit and cocker being a sex icon just makes me laugh after seeing the tiny desk. i love weirdos. fav songs disco 2000 and mis-shapes
Another banger album, it's been a great week. Its almost worth a 5 for one of my all time favorite tracks 'Common people'
Älskar fortfarande denna! Massor med bra och catchy låtar, en av de bästa är förstås Common people.
Belle découverte
Pulp are probably the best Britpop has to offer. Decent songwriting, classy instrumentation, it's decent.
Surprising. I was only familiar with 'Common People' and, according to Spotify, 'Disco 2000' before listening through. The album contains a number of recurring ideas, both thematically (working class stories) and melodically. Pulp make good use of emotional dynamics and their sounds range from almost gritty to bubblegum pop, sometimes in parallel. My chief complaint is that I think they under-did the grit and the bombast. Jarvis Cocker's vocals rise to a heartfelt belt (building to the defiant and sad final refrain of "you'll never live like common people") but I felt that the arrangement and the instrumental textures left him hanging. Like much Britpop, they reserve the full blast of emotion and are poorer for it. Note to musicians: at some point, you've gotta put it all out there, else you're just writing jingles. 4/5
No idea who Pulp was. I really enjoyed this album. Kind of haunting vocals with interesting song writing. Good solid album!
Альбом раскрылся как только я углубился в содержание его текста. За последнее время один из не самых типичных альбомов по концепту, который меня зацепил. Интересная работа
What I like about Pulp is that they're corny and horny. great stuff!
Mirror mirror on the wall. Who's the ace-est one of all? Great album. I think Pulp is great. I think this album is great.
Listening to this album it was painfully obvious that the whole “battle of the britpop” thing was painfully focused on the wrong bands. Who cares who is better between Oasis and Blur when this blows anything either of them ever did out of the water? Musically and lyrically this is by far the most interesting and dynamic britpop record we’ve been served up. The title of the album makes a clear reference to how much the album is concerned with social class, generally from the perspective of the immortalized “Common People”. Musically it’s a little all over the place but in a way that’s really fun to listen to.
Kinks/bowie rip off, Brit pop, glam theatrical rock in 96 Common people
90s grunge pop. This band just reminds me of Olivia at this point. I will say, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing even though it's not my usual style!
A cult classic and one of the most popular British albums from the 1990s. There are tons of great songs here, and Common People is such a classic. I don't like his voice that much but other than that, it's a very good album (though I have to say I have always preferred Blur to any of the other britpop bands).
I don’t think I’ve heard a single song on this album. It reminds me of something I can’t quite place… in any case, I enjoyed it! 7/10 Quite Likeable
28/01/2026 Wasn't a hard listen, a bit boring in places but good overall. Spotify listeners: 2.7 million
Insanely good. Loved evry minute.
I've never listened to the full Album. Just the big tracks off of it. It is a more mellow vibe overall. But a great album
Wtf
Kitchen sink Britpop for the common people.
Wow, finally a band that incorporates art rock elements without sounding completely weird! Interestingly, I wasn't familiar with Pulp before, but I would have loved to listen to “Different Class” in the 90s, which I found rather disappointing musically. The Britpop-esque basic sound would probably have annoyed me at some point, but the album is really not bad and even reasonably varied. Two or three catchy songs would have done it good, but otherwise it's very decent. I've always rounded up 3.5 stars, and I'll do that again now.
Liked this a lot! Good mix of tunes and messages.
I liked common people and this is hardcore
Damn fine record.
Enjoyed it, songs all fit together nicely. Good, but not quite a five
A fun album (I already knew and loved Common People and Disco 2000) although some of the lyrics were a bit dodgy.
The tunes are good, the singing is good, the lyrics are a cringe fest. Pulp had so much potential, if only Jarvis Cocker could stop thinking about his Jarvis Cock.
guter vibe, catchy, mehr gemocht als erwartet
Good vibes and some interesting songs. Enjoyed it overall.
Solid album. The opening track sets the standard, and except for 2 or 3 mediocre tracks, the album keeps a high standard of songwriting. By first glance/listen it might seem a little stock, but listening closely, you find these subtleties that raise it above standard fare.
Amazing lyrics, must have been an interesting Brit pop era mid 1990s, this album feels quite revolutionary in terms of combining poetry and every day middle class lyrics
4/5 pleasantly, pleasantly surprised by how unique it is despite its age best: disco 2000
Wow this is cool as heck, it’s like the cure or smiths but like unique as well? I liked this album quite a bit. It kept me engaged with the interesting variety. 3.6
Common People is a classic. The rest of the album is also amazingly strong. Massive fan.
It's not the most consistent album, but it does include two of the best songs ever (you know which ones I mean)
Sounds similar to PSB
To me, this album is about the disparities in understanding between the classes in the UK. Being working class is seen as romantic by the upper classes, but the reality is just that it’s actually shit. I enjoyed this more than I thought. Everyone has heard Common People, and rightfully so - it’s a great song. Most other songs are also well written, and I warmed to the vocalists performance as the album went on. Some songs were definitely not as good as others, and I thought it petered out a bit at the end. Still, a strong showing! 7/10
As quirky as it is intriguing. The musical progression is captivating with pop licks and bass lines that grove the bones. Complete with scandalous lyrics. Takes a minute to sink in but satisfies just the same.
Muzyka miejscami podobna. Fajen: 1. Mis-Shapes 4. I Spy 9. F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. 10. Underwear
Super solid tunes.
I remember bouncing off this album after a few songs last year, but this time I was all in. Very good 90s UK sound.
He sings a perverts melody but i will allow it! The British are emo and I’ve learned that every song is either “i love you” or “the world disturbs me” so all of this is that
Beautiful
Do my ears deceive me? A britpop album on this list that doesn’t sound like an Oasis knockoff? Oh, glorious day! I like the unique sound and creativity present in the songwriting. Though, the lyrics can feel a bit uncomfortable at times. Personally, I don’t think that Pencil Skirt would be much different without “I really love it when you tell me to stop.” The rest of it is normal, backdoor man type lyrics and that’s just thrown in the chorus. Also, the entirety of I Spy. Was that really necessary? Still, this album is good, I’d even call it great. 4/5
Simply great
Yes, finally ! It reminds me of "Ants from up here". "Underwear" was the first song that played, ffs what is it lol lol But oh finally my type of songs in it ! I think this is going to me another one of my fav, so far only two fav yet.
I love pulp. This is just so British in the best way possible. I listen to snippets of this album a lot, and will now listen to it more. It is a great mix between pop and rock, and not serious enough yo be that wanky indie.
Really like this, can't believe it's 30 years old. Great record, so funny and clever and interesting. Some interesting experiments with instrumentation too.
I've had this album for a long time (since it's release) "Common People" and "Disco 2000) are top tier tracks and for the longest time they were the only ones I really listened to. Occasionally "Sorted Out..." I thought the rest of it was kind of weak back in the day, but listening to it now I really enjoy the full package.
I must admit, I didn't like it back then. But I have obviously learned to appreciate it. I even like most of it. It's very, very British. This is why I love this website. I get to reevaluate things I had already written off.
Only previously heard Common People. Enjoyed the mix of different styles. Every track is well produced. Will be a repeat listen.
The only brit pop album which doesn't sound like shite
Could have been 5 stars if the vocals were cleaner. The instrumentals and overall vibe were on point and unlike just about anytime else.
Not every song on this album was good. A lot were just really weird. But then some songs were actually amazing. I think I give more weight to the good ones than the bad ones. I would definitely listen to Common People and a few others songs on the regular, but that's about it.
Album 1000 of 1089 Different Class - Pulp (1995) Rating : 4 / 5 This is an awesome Britpop album that really rewards you if you give it the attention it deserves. From start to finish, it’s sharp, funny, observant, and consistently engaging. Jarvis Cocker’s songwriting is the real star here. These are songs about marriage infidelity, sexless relationships, awkward crushes that linger too long, class tension, and everyday human messiness - all delivered with wit, honesty, and just enough bite. It’s adult subject matter without ever feeling heavy-handed, and clever without being smug. What really stood out to me is how each track made me look forward to the next. There’s no filler here, just a steady run of smart, well-crafted songs that balance humor and social commentary beautifully. The band keeps everything moving with energy and confidence, and the production lets the songs breathe without dulling their edge. For me, this is Britpop at its best - fun, thoughtful, and memorable. A great album on its own, and a very satisfying way to hit album number 1000 in this project.
https://youtu.be/ainyK6fXku0?si=733Ymgt8Bgb9kEGc
i gotta say i act kinda like this album, like its pretty up my alley its pretty good except for that song with the egregiously long title, the instrumental is good but i hated when he was talking and not singing rating 7.5/10
this was an interesting one. I don't think I've heard any of their songs before, I'm American and was raised pretty sheltered. Plus this came out before I was born. I wouldn't say the lyrics are my favorite, at least not across the album as a whole. Same with his voice. But there's an odd interesting quality to it that intrigues me. I did like the production a whole lot tho. I think I'm going to be nice and just put this at 4 instead of 3. I might regret that in the future, but it was interesting overall and I might come back to it more often than other albums I've gotten so far. Some lyrics "Why live in the world when you can live in your head" "I want a refund, I want a light" I typically only have 5 brain cells working at a time, but they're all on Christmas break at the moment :( I'm like 4 albums behind on this, I've just been really really sad lately lol.
Several songs I really liked - "Mis-Shapes", "Common People", "Disco 2000". The rest I may have to give another shot some time. On first listen, a good album. May bear repeats.
Meget godt album! Har lidt Bowie stil over sig
Virkelig virkelig god?? Meget positivt overrasket
This album rocks and rolls. Jam after jam. Hilarious lyrics. Features an all time classic (“Common People”) and another great banger (“Disco 2000”).
Easy 4.
I hadn’t heard this, other than Common People. Really entertaining - this might be one of the best britpop albums from this era.
This is pretty great. Might have found my ceiling for Britpop. Saved a song: N RYM: Y (#521)
85/100. Different Class by Pulp is a very strong Britpop/rock record, tackling themes of class struggle, social dynamics, and sex. The album explores timeless topics, ensuring its relevance long after its release. With sharp lyricism and infectious melodies, it remains one of the defining albums of the Britpop era. The standout track, "Common People," is an anthem in its own right, capturing the essence of the album’s message.
I spy = it's a sin - Umildbart 4er, men vil høre den igen. Yep. Efter lyt Nr 2 er det klart en 4er. Den rammer mig ikke som album. Måske fordi de hits som der er her på er så vilde at de overgår bandet. 🤷 Det er klart godt, men det gør ikke rigtig noget for mig.
common people was a banger. kind of weirdly sexual. by the end i liked it though
Dark and weird, but I like dark and weird! Common People is a 5* song. Songs switch instantly from bizarre to extremely catchy.
Fantastic
It definitely peaked early, but I still enjoyed it.
Great album.
I like this album. Strong the whole way through. Don’t skip out on the last track.
I really liked this one. It was a bit strange at times, but good strange. A few of the songs weren’t for me, but overall I enjoyed it a lot. Common People is a great song, and there were a few others I knew but it was cool to hear some of their songs that I hadn’t heard before. I would probably listen to this again although I think I’d have to be in the right mood for it. Fav song: Common People Least fav: I Spy
Like the cover and album of this one. Was a bit horny at times but it had a lot of heart and meaning behind it. Some serious bangers too Specific rating - 4.3 Fav song- Disco 2000 Least fav- Live Bed show
I really enjoyed this one! Would give a 4.5 if I could. Will definitely be checking out more of their music.
Sassy, sardonic, and witty.
Very gog brit pop songs
Druga klasa u odnosu na većinu dosad preslušanih albuma. Niko nije nadomjestio nedostatak pjevačkih sposobnosti efikasno kao Jarvis. Nije mi više samo Common People himna nego cijeli album. Možda drugi najjači album od velike britpop četvorke.
I like Pulp. The band and the pulp
honestly never been a huge pulp guy but they have really high highs!!
Yet another britpop band. Some of the whispering was annoying. Low 4.
Oasis>pulp>blur>suede
Really fun listen! It’s crazy the range of popular music in 1995. You could have told me this record came out a decade earlier and I would believe it. Lots of great jams and enough diversity throughout to keep it engaging. Best Track: Underwear
8/10 anche 9/10 forse Would re-listen
Great Songs: Common People, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E, Underwear Good Songs: Mis-Shapes, I Spy, Disco 2000, Live Bed Show, Something's Changed, Sorted For E's & Wizz, Monday Morning, Bar Italia Mid Songs: Pencil Skirt Bad Songs:
Pulp walked so Arctic Monkeys could run.
This reminds me of an unironic version of The Divine Comedy's album Casanova. I Spy sounds similar to Through a Long & Sleepless Night...........although Casanova came out a year later. I guess this is the period of overtly sexual cringe vampire Britpop. Pulp sounds a bit like Keanu Reeves with a British accent at times. It's catchy music and i'm sure Common People was the quintessential Hugh Grant movie theme song, but it doesn't hold up well at all imo. Just sounds too much like horny, edgy teenagers "rebelling" by openly discussing sex and just sounds juvenile. But I get the appeal for the horny, edgy, teenager demographic that then became the emo demographic. Aside from the edgy lyrics, the actual music is great and pretty fun to listen to. I'm giving this one point higher than I think it deserves just because I think this album is probably the crowning "achievement" (if you can call it that) of the Britpop era........and then the genre died; for the betterment of the world. It's produced well and I like it a lot more than than the Oasis/Blur petty rivalry that dominated the era. Overall I still prefer The Divine Comedy's Casanova because of the orchaestral elements and I think Neil Hannon did a better job of having a "please don't take this seriously" vibe. Pulp was also creepy, but the vibe felt like they were actually serious, which is ridiculous.
Another one I'm glad to have finally listened to, I think of the so-called 'Brit-pop' bands, these lot are certainly the total outliers, as I don't think you can pin down any central inspirations as much as Oasis and the Beatles or whatever. The instrumentals are really great, a bit of glam rock stuff, but with hard-rock inspirations and also some really solid electronic parts. I think Jarvis Cocker is an insanely good frontman, and I think he might be one of the most influential singers in British music, as so many bands today have the tongue-in-cheek elements which this does, and I guess these guys took themselves a lot less seriously than other Brit-pop bands, as there's a lot of 4th wall breaks and jokes in the lyrics. Also loads of these are really catchy, while still being quite experimental, and certain parts reminded me of Sterolab, which I guess sort of makes sense. Favourite songs: mis-shapes, pencil skirt, common people, I spy, disco 2000, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E., underwear, Monday Morning. Overall around 8/10 (I feel like I might be inflating this score a bit to compete with what I gave the Oasis albums, becuase I think in time, this would be better imo.
Quite enjoyable and different sound than many bands I listen to. Reminded me of the Cure but less emo.
Not bad. Some standout tracks but remainder is average
Honestly much better than I expected. I could've gone without the whispering talking like in the song I Spy, and genuinely I had a good time listening to this. I understand why so many people love this album and how it could be considered their best without listening to their other albums. Very funny how this and Oasis' Morning Glory came out the same year.
I’m a bit of a casual Pulp fan, I always liked their singles or indeed most of what I heard but never really listened to their albums back in the day, I guess I didn’t have friends that were massively into them else I might have been more of a fan. I appreciate them now more than ever and their new album was a slightly unexpected return and a good return too. My favourite tracks here are perhaps unsurprisingly the singles but Sorted for E’s and Wizz has to be my favourite. “I left a very important part of my brain in a field in Hampshire” is an all time great line.
Aye great album
Never really listened to Plup before but that was class *Jarvis Cocker strut
Brittipoppia puhtaimmillaan ysäriltä. Workkii monessa kohtaa
What a nice surprise. Liked this one a lot.
Really good.
Classic Pulp. Probably their best received album.
Their commercial peak but certainly not my favourite. It seems they finally found a formula that resonated. If I never hear Common People or Disco 2000 I won't be disappointed. The rest of the album is really enjoyable.
Putain le groupe de BDG mais j'ai kiffé
Quite good, kinda Bowie-esc
Day 10: Best tracks: Common People, Disco 2000, Mis-Shapes, Bar Italia Witty and bitingly subversive. God I wish this was bigger in the U.S. in 1995/96. My go-to answer to the "Oasis vs. Blur" debate is Pulp. At least Pulp exemplified both the "Brit" and the "pop" in Britpop. Listening to this again doesn't make me reevaluate. This album slays from start to finish. 9/10.
Haven die geheiratet? Musik zur Heirat. Wurde dort abgespielt? Passt total zur Heirat und ist Tanzbar.
Maybe the mood was just right or something, but I really enjoyed this despite it having many features that often don't work for me. I think there's just enough self-awareness as well as gravity to sell the dramatics.
I'd like to give this 5 stars for Disco 2000 and Something Changed, but parts of the album are not as incredible as those two songs. It's still a brilliant album.
For me, this is the defining Britpop album.
A very refreshing listen from a group of solid musicians.
Very human. Fun
Not a bad album by any means. However, it was somewhat boring and repetitive.
Oh fuck yeah dude!! First time I heard these guys were on Trainspotting. Man that movie is seared into my brain. Never heard a whole album by them though. Mile End is the song that's in that movie. I wonder if it's on this album. It's not but I bet this will be good. I like the album cover. The band members are in black and white. Common People is on here though! Wow, I really liked I Spy!
Still holds up well though probably more interesting lyrically than musically. Common People and Sorted for Tea and Viz were very much the '95 Zeitgeist. Havent dipped much into Pulp over the years, my Britpop revisits tend to be Blur, Supergrass even Elastica so I guess I am a Southern artskool softie.
Great album - I remember 30 years ago two kids yelling pulp as their band of choice. Sorry it took so long.
1. Never heard of this band once in my life, but apparently they’re quite popular in Britain? 2. The singer sounds like David Bowie, which is funny that their description on Spotify suggests that their “signature sound” is similar to his, glam rock 3. Oh wait, I’ve heard Common People before. Ali recently did it at a karaoke night. Also apparently this is their most popular song by a large margin (at least in terms of listens on Spotify) 4. Now this feels like an actual album (in terms of length/songs) 5. Definitely an interesting span of genres in this single album 6. On second listen, quite like Disco 2000
Fun and insightful and melodic. Reminds me of edgy rich kids.
I've always thought of this as the Britpop album for people who think they're too good for Britpop. And as someone who thinks she's too good for Britpop, well, you know how it is...
Really good. No skips. Bowie and Cure vibes throughout. Dig it. Would buy.
It's really good. It might be better than Blur, top Britpop.
This album felt like a breath of fresh air. very light and playful, I enjoyed to layers of guitar, bass, and synth. while the content of the songs were also a little sappy…
Decadence Brit
Singer sounds like Bowie. Very new wave sounding.
😁
Overall enjoyed this album, it seems like a classic from its time. Definitely some uncomfortably creepy themes surrounding consent or lack thereof throughout the album that I didn't love. Musically enjoyable, and some of the songs were pretty fun lyrically too. Some highlight tracks for me were Common People, Disco 2000, and Bar Italia.
Different Class by Pulp was quite mellow and easy to listen to. I was trying to figure out some of the more unique sounds on it. Apparently one of the instruments is a mellotron invented in the UK. Fitting name for an instrument with the mellow sort of vibes. They also played a few other instruments I had no clue that existed like a synare (which appears to be an early version of an electric drum pad), and a vocoder which essentially distorts vocals into synthesized musical sounds.
The Class Warfare album. Lyrics are a little rough in places, but show the anger.
Classic
Probably my favourite Britpop album. Creative instrumentals, incredible songwriting and, mostly anyway, fantastic lyrics about working class life in the UK. Their creative peak, the standout tracks Common People, Disco 2000, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E., Mis-shapes, I Spy, Sorted for E's And Wizz, all top tier. 9/10.
The closest comparison I can think of is its the UK's equivalent to R.E.M.'s Automatic For The People, insomuch it's full of anthems for weird kids everywhere. Its not close to that level of quality but everything hits in a weird comforting way and if you vibe with it then you vibe HARD with it.
Potential five. Will need to re-listen. Four for now.
common people is incredible, the rest of the album can't live up to it but damn does it try. 4/5

Was surprised I liked it because of the vocals they changed it up enough and was fun to listen to.
This was a 90's album and band that I missed out on. After the first listen to this album I was not impressed. Was opening up to it after a second listen. Boy am I glad that I gave it a couple more spins because each listen had me feeling it more and more!! For some reason they remind me of Arcade Fire but not quite. Really enjoyed this album and will keep in my rotation..
Pues temas cameloteros como comond people, disco 2000, pop inglés… esta bien
