A hot take of mine has always been that besides the absurdly good Guitar, Hendrix isn’t that great. I don’t enjoy his vocals much. I love the guitar but oh well. I wish I enjoyed him and this more.

This is pretty great. I've never had anything against Jimi Hendrix—I got the greatest hits from BMG a million years ago, for what that's worth—but I really appreciated the deeper cuts and other songs I haven't heard a million times.

This was pretty great. Being an avid subscriber of multiple guitar magazines in the early 90s, the specter of Jimi Hendrix was unavoidable, and rightly so. Very much a one of a kind and rightly holds the mantle of GOAT guitar hero. Can't help but wonder what strange and mysterious music he would have created if he stayed off the drugs. Had never listened to this entire album, and some stuff on here I'd never heard. Sounds decidedly less cheesy and dated than other late 60s rock albums that pop up on here, e.g. Jefferson Airplane. All that said, not all of it really translates to me in 2025 and some falls flat, but I'm the problem, not Jimi.

I can see what people mean that this sounds better while your stone or drinking because I was kind of getting bored half way through.

Had LP1 on CD back in high school, grew out of classic rock in college and upon relearning to like it, I have definitely come to appreciate LP3 as a masterpiece. I may never have heard this album besides "Little Wing", "If 6 was 9" and the title track. Now that I've heard the whole album I have to admit that even "Little Wing" and the title track may have been brand new for me. And "Castles Made of Sand" was most recognizable, possibly a track my guitar teacher tried to get me to learn. Overall a fine time, I may revisit.

This is only the second Hendrix album I’ve stepped into on this 1001 journey, and yet again it feels like entering another dimension. His music is an atmosphere, a kaleidoscope of color that pours straight from the guitar - you almost see him painting the air with sound. There’s a dreamlike quality to it, but also a precision and clarity that makes every note feel alive. Each of the songs carry his boldness, but also an intimacy, as though the music is flowing directly from Hendrix’s soul. Bold as Love feels like his whole ethos…fearless, fluid, and deeply human. Standouts for me were You Got Me Floatin’, the delicate dreamscape of One Rainy Wish, and of course the kaleidoscopic sweep of Bold as Love. He certainly forms a trip that feels both cosmic and personal.

In my graphic design career, I have met and worked with other designers that made me want to hang up my hat and just go home. They are just too fucking good it makes me wonder why I am even trying. Likewise, It must have been such a bummer to be a rock band in the time of Jimi Hendrix. I imagine Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Pete Townsend, Carlos Santana, and more must have felt pretty chilly standing in Jimi's shadow. And Jimi earned it—he was a dedicated musician who played for hours and hours and hours every single day. What's more though, you can hear clear as day that this dude was born to do it. Aside from being a virtuoso guitarist at such a young age, he also had such a talent for songwriting and composition. Jimi was apparently also very open when it came to collaboration and taking notes from producers and engineers. On this record he slips effortlessly from these glassy fluid figures into arpeggiated rhythms soaked in blues so often it sounds like his guitar has an actual voice and isn't something simply laying the foundation for the vocals. Even in slower tracks, there is an energy to his music that just feels vital... I mean, it bleeds. This masterpiece opens with straight up UFO references kinda suggesting War of the Worlds and moves into wild-ass panning distorted guitar noise. It gave me chills. All over this thing the band plays with rhythm and time signatures in really compelling ways. "Castles Made of Sand" grooves in smooth liquid textures and yet has this incredibly propulsive rhythmic foundation that hits and complements the swirly reversing guitar notes. It's in 4/4 but somehow sounds almost like 5/8. I think a lot about how he wrote his watery melodies. Although they seem scale-based, they are also super complex and the playing of them comes across as effortless. Ultimately, however, this is a very drum-forward record. Although everyone pulls their weight, Mitch Mitchell is an absolute monster on practically every track. Axis: Bold as Love is psychedelic rock at its absolute peak. This album is totally overflowing with imagination. You can tell Eddie Kramer had a blast in the studio after the session applying phaser effects and taking it to another level. Like the other songs about castles, "Spanish Castle Magic" absolutely rocks and grooves at the same time. "Little Wing" is gorgeous, and I cannot believe they got away with using a freakin' glockenspiel on a 60s rock ballad, but here we are. Where the melodic figures come from in "If 6 Were 9" boggles the mind. The completely random recorder freakout at the end is fabulous. Apparently Jimi just found the weird flute we all played in grade school laying around the studio and decided to use it. The cover art, although iconic, is a pretty hefty slice of mid-century American Orientalism, so that part kinda sucks. But the colors are juicy and the typography sends a very clear message about what you're getting into (even though you don't hear a single fucking sitar). Finally, the girl who popped my cherry put the song "Bold As Love" on a mixtape for me in the 90s and that will forever canonize this record as a holy relic of my life's story. We never fell in love, but we had a pretty good time. Maybe it was a commentary on my performance, after all, "Orange is young, full of daring, But very unsteady for the first go 'round..."

Opening track is the unfortunately prevalent avant-garde weirdness. A couple of actual songs also get a bit weird. Otherwise, pleasant to listen to.

I always thought Jimi Hendrix was just a rock god. I didn’t realize he was also a blues god. I really dug this album.

This had a lot of depth. Funky, groovy, gave those classic 70s game show music vibes. I felt like I was watching Match Game in the best way

How could one not like Jimi! This album showed more depth and maturity than his debut. Was fun to listen to this one end to end.

I hate not to rave about this album, but words cannot capture its creativity, talent, breadth of styles, or influence. Listening is sheer joy, always. And, in a not-so-subtle nod to the Desert Island Album selection committee, there is even a sing about sand castles. An easy 5. Strong candidate for 🐐.

Very 1967 coded and definately more eclectic than I was expecting - maybe a little less guitar virtuosity orientated than the other Hendrix I have heard - looser, perhaps a little jazzier and a bit more...far out.

I don’t mind Hendrix. I just struggle to get excited by Hendrix.

In all honesty, this is my least favourite studio album from Hendix. That said. it's still damn solid. Lacking the signature song but this is still a must listen for anyone wanting to explore the genius that is Hendrix.

The great guitarplay of Hendrix is shown off here. In both the hard psychedelic rock songs like Spanish Castle magic but also the fragile beauty of little wing and castles made of sand. Castles made of sand is a beautiful reminder that all things must eventually pass. Both the good and the bad, this too shall pass.

To me, Axis: Bold As Love is for the weakest album from Hendrix. It doesn’t really have the same pizazz that his other records have for me. I think it has some weak songs and moments, and I thought the lyricism could’ve been better. But then again, this is by no means a bad album. Hendrix is epic on guitar as is to be expected with killer riffs and melodies with songs like Spanish Castle Magic, which is heavy and psychedelic. The iconic Little Wing, while relaxed, short and sweet, I wish was a bit longer. That’s just a me problem though. Both of these songs how well Hendrix can set an atmosphere. There’s still good tracks to be found on this album despite the faults I have with it. Even if I prefer Electric Ladyland, Axis: Bold as Love is still a nice album. It proves to me that Hendrix was a king of psychedelic rock and a god at the guitar. Rest in peace Hendrix. ✌️

So, so, so cool. Probably the best Jimi record for me I think. I reserve the right to change my mind on that, but it's super consistent, got a very singular vibe, and - unlike Jimi at times - all the songs feel quite finished and complete.

I don't get Jimi Hendrix and think he is very over rated. Little Wing is about the only track worth hearing.

Butterflies And Zebras And Moonbeams 1001 Albums Generator 78 (07/21/2025) Jimi Hendrix needs no introduction. As perhaps the most iconic guitarist of the 1960's (if not of all time), it is surprising that during his life, he released only 3 albums, all with his trio, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The second of these albums is the most surreal, Axis: Bold As Love. From just looking at the cover, which is quite a strong departure from the simple portrait of the band that donned their debut Are You Experienced (and was created without Hendrix's permission), it is clear that this album is going to be strange. And the first "song", Exp, which mimics a radio interview with a "peculiar looking gentleman" who non-convincingly argues against the existence of UFOs before being taken by one (?), also features extremely noisy and dissonant guitar feedback for like a full minute. Welcome to Axis: Bold As Love. Now, luckily this album does not stay this weird. In fact, I actually think that in a lot of ways, this album is more accessible than the band's debut. Jimi's guitar work is much cleaner and more jazzy, especially on songs like Little Wing and Castles Made Of Sand, which ended up being the two most famous songs off of Bold As Love. The intro to Little Wing especially may be the best piece of songwriting that Jimi Hendrix every did. The glockenspiel is also a beautiful touch. Castles Made Of Sand is an autobiographical song about Jimi's childhood that is full of reversed guitar parts. The drums and bass cut out during the beginning of each chorus, which give focus to Jimi's vocals. Up From The Skies is also a chill piece and is a very different style than a lot of what Hendrix had done before. Mitch Mitchell's drums are extremely jazzy and Jimi's guitar is drenched in a constant wah-wah sound. Spanish Castle Magic feels like metal before metal. The guitar and drums are especially crushing and the chromatic walk down riff during the verses is really heavy. If 6 Was 9 (someone doesn't know his subjunctive conjugations) is split into two distinct sections. The first is built on a relatively simple but effective blues-y riff, which transitions into a guitar solo before falling into a more free form jam with spoken vocals. Finally, the band explodes into another jam that fades out. Bold As Love starts with a riff that really reminds me of RHCP (positive) and features a relatively straightforward jam from the boys, but it is some of the finest work here honestly. I really like the flanging on the drums. Not everything here is great though. Wait Until Tomorrow has great instrumentals, but the backing vocals are annoying and childish. Actually, this is a similar issue I have with You Got Me Floatin'. Songs like She's So Fine and Little Miss Lover fail to stand out in any real way and bring the quality of the album down a bit. Overall, Axis: Bold As Love is probably my least favorite of the 3 albums by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but it is still great. Some of Jimi's best and most restrained songwriting appears here, but some forgettable songs keep it from being as good as his best albums. 4/5. Hendrix is rock n’ roll. It is an extension of him. He just seems to understand it on a deeper level than most artists. We should be grateful for the short time we got with him.

Enjoyed this much more than electric lady land. It felt more cohesive, the production is awesome. The drums are fat and warm and the guitar tones are amazing. This demands more listening

Axis will always hold a place as one of the best albums ever recorded, in my opinion. The experimentation juxtaposed with the classic rock sound, creates a sonic experience so unique, that we haven't even seen it done by others. Must listen in stereo, it's very important for the true experience of this masterpiece.

A genius. Altough I think some of his best songs might not be in this album

Wish I had half-star ratings available, 3 too low, 4 too high. Not his best work, but it does contain, probably, his best song ("Little Wing") along with a few other gems. Doesn't blow me away, but still quite good.

I must caveat and say this is more of a 3.5 star outing as it perhaps didn’t grab me as much as I expected, though I did enjoy it on the whole. I feel like there must be other Hendrix records where I’d get on better with maybe just down to the famous tracks but this was good enough to revisit, I just don’t know when. The vocals at times were softer than I expected, and I quite liked that about it.

I can respect this album a lot, and glad I listened to it, but will probably not return to it

It’s 1967 so parts of this album are experimental. It’s Jimi Hendrix so there is plenty of other dimensional guitar riffs. “Little Wing” and “Castles Made of Sand” are standouts. Unfortunately Jimi’s genius doesn’t always translate well in the recording studio.

I’ve been left relatively disappointed by the Hendrix albums in this project so far, but something stood out about this one. It contained mostly unfamiliar songs, but it had a markedly more mature sound and superior sonic production to Are You Experienced, while being less obnoxious & in-your-face than Electric Ladyland. It’s the only of his three albums so far that I would happily listen to a second time. A high 3 for this decent output, rounded up to a 4.

Maybe it was just the songs in this selection, but Mr Hendrix is an amazing guitarist but not as much a singer. The things he does to a guitar are magical, with a transportive quality.

Cool guitar sounds. Hendrix's voice is kind of boring to me. It almost sounds like he's singing from the next room over - there's something dull about it. Music from the '60s has something about it that just stops it from really hitting me, I think it's just too far back for me to not seem a bit dated. Overall a decent album but no standouts. I think if I heard this at a time when I felt more energetic I'd get more out of it, but hey ho

- The panning on this album is nuts for '67 - This goes without saying but the guitar playing is nuts - The songs are all so short which is weird to me. I feel like they all felt like they ended too fast - I love all the weird psychedelic guitar noises he makes during the psych parts

Incredible. When I listen to this, I hear his influence everywhere. That fuzzy, bluesy, psychedelic guitar. I think what really stood out to me this time around is actually his voice and singing style. He's really kind of doing a blues / soul / almost funk kind of thing, where he's talking through the lyrics or adding little phrases here and there. It really makes me wonder what would have Hendrix sounded like if he made it to the 80s? And how would that have changed the landscape for music? Would he have leaned heavier into funk and collaborated with artists like Sly Stone or George Clinton? Would he have collaborated more with The Grateful Dead or Eric Clapton or The Beatles? His style is so nuanced and diverse but also expansive. I can hear it everywhere. I can hear Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Childish Gambino, Grateful Dead, Phish, Sly and the Family Stone, Funkadelic, Parliament, Prince all within this record. Its so so good. What a treasure.

Such an enjoyable album to listen to, there wasn't a single weak track, and it sounded so ahead of its time. As expected, vocals, guitars, and drums were all exceptional, and I loved hearing the use of the (then) groundbreaking techniques e.g., the "wah wah" effect on the electric guitar in "Little Miss Lover". The intro was trippy as hell, and I loved the sounds swirling around my head throughout the album. "Spanish Castle Magic", "If 6 Was Nine" and "One Rainy Wish" were the standout tracks to me, but they are all outstanding. I also really enjoyed the personal lyrics in "Castles Made of Sand", and the space-like guitar solo at the end of "Bold as Love".

One of the worst intros ever. So irritating. But leads in to pure gold. Little Wing is one of the best.

Jimi Hendrix: Axis: Bold As Love: Really damn good. The guitar work is intricate, and the songs are incredibly varied and interesting. His vocals are also fantastic. I can see why Hendrix is so well regarded, this was a really enjoyable listen. Some of the weird parts are a little too abstract or go on too long, but that's really my only complaint. 9/10

Yikes, I couldn’t get past the album cover, firstly. Secondly, it’s extremely meh. Some tracks were fine, but others were barely bearable. Safe to say, I do NOT get the hype.

This was my second Jimi Hendrix album and I liked it more... mostly because if felt less meandering and guitar solo heavy.

Really good album, but not quite great. There are some great tracks but overall it’s a little too uneven for a full complement of stars. Obviously the guitar playing is superb - Hendrix just has so much feel and is so comfortable with the instrument it barely seems like he is playing, it’s more like it’s just coming out of him - but what I think is sometimes overlooked is how great a singer he was as well. If this was a little more consistent in quality, and if we had a little more of the outtro to Little Wing, this would have been 5. As it is it’s a really strong 4.

Impressive that this album was released just seven months after their debut. While more expansive in sound and songwriting, some of the production techniques are overused and therefore distracting at times. Way too much panning. But, it makes sense given the times when the studio was becoming an instrument itself and multi-tracking was a whole new world. Still a solid listen overall.

I’m game to let Jimi take over, but this one was just a touch lacking at times. A couple of his greats on here, for sure. But some underwhelming tracks too. Still really solid

Listening to this I was like is it a 4* or 5*? And then my brain was like STFU and let the guitar licks wash over you. And I did and it was glorious. First two tracks had me thinking "rut roh" but it dramatically improved from there. Greatness. 4.25.5

There's a huge reason Jimi Hendrix is widely considered the best. Just listen to the first song on this album, it's Jimi making traffic noises on guitar! Mitch Mitchell is a beast on drums as well. It's a shame we only got 3 albums during Hendrix's lifetime.

Liked the album, has lots of distortion, very energetic

really good, and to think that this was only 7 months after their debut, just shows how much of a songwriting machine Hendrix was (and maybe the rest of the band too). So much of this is so revolutionary, guitar tone wise especially, the feedback noise in the first song mimicking and alien or something is straight up some 90s noise rock/shoegaze shit, as well as some of the 'heavy-pshych' bits. Many of these songs sound a lot like 90s and 2000s Red Hot Chili peppers, and I know the guitarist was heavily influenced, but this was like 30-40 years ahead. obviously the modulation effects and wah stuff is so good, especially when combined with fuzz/gain. I also really like the one song by the bassist, sounds like some Syd Barret era Pink Floyd stuff. There's also one song where he's kind of rapping, which makes you wonder what crazy music would have been made if rapping existed and was popular in the late 60s. I can't really pick holes in this, as I think that parts of this guitar style (blues stuff) haven't aged very well, but that's becuase of other people doing it to death later on, and I think that Hendrix's playing style is just so unique and captivating, to this day. I think I maybe like this a little less than Are you experienced? and a similar amount to Electric Ladyland. Favourite songs: all Overall around 9/10

I didn't get the distortion at first but I did like vibe, guitar, base, and lyrics.

This album is a bit overlooked, coming just seven months after Hendrix’s debut Are You Experienced. It’s probably the weirdest and most experimental of his albums too, with a very strange intro and lots of strange audio phasing effects in the production mix. Lots to appreciate here, and it points the way to Electric Ladyland.

Fantastic album, would give it 4.5 stars if possible. Not quite my favourite JHE album, but solid all around.

Listened via YouTube music on iPhone headphones and the truck. This is about as classic as they get and never gets or feels old. Only shredder like him now is Mdou Moctar. Getting to see him again at Shaky Knees in a few months.

Potrafi ten pan grać na gitarze i wiedzą to wszyscy. Ale wokal już nie jest taki dobry. Kompozycje też do mnie nie trafiają. Nie planuję podwyższać oceny tylko dlatego że to klasyk. Nie bez powodu najbardziej podobały mi się piosenki, przy których majstrował ktoś inny. 6/10

I've never been a fan of psychedelic rock, but this ain't half-bad. Didn't knock my socks off, but if I heard it again, I wouldn't be mad I did. I see why my Dad had a poster of this in the den when I was a kid.

Hadn't listened to this one in a while, but it was always my favourite Hendrix album. Forgot just how great it was! So many groundbreaking riffs, and an improvement over their first album, which had some fat to trim, IMO.

while ive yet to have a proper jimi Period where he becomes my favorite dude or whatever, my many years of inexplicably apathy/distance towards his music Were snapped out of by this very album, last year i believe? its technically the most songwritey hendrix record but i tend not to think of the songwriting itself necessarily on its own...more the way it provides a springboard for jimi's various timbrel ideas, a greater intimacy with the base elements of the electric guitar than could ever be Taught. every song is a relatively simple approachable base meant to be Complimented from the various colors of candy-coated fire that jimi launches off into. and that tonal balance between flower power and atomic explosion is rly only something that can be done this brightly on this specific configuration of the experience,,,not an ascended blues rock record like are you experienced, or a big exploratory spread like electric ladyland, but a relatively economic poppy psychy thing. prob still my fave! tho i owe EL a lot more time probably. obviously jimi influenced everybody and their mom, but i feel like dean ween in particular has gotta love this specific record.

What an album! What a genius! Way ahead of his time. There’s beauty in this album. Not a lot of pain but beauty.

Standout Songs: Spanish Castle Magic Wait Until Tomorrow You Got Me Floatin' One Rainy Wish Little Miss Lover A great album to get stoned and zone out to. Nearly 40 minutes of Jimi’s sweet guitar filling my ears. A lot of interesting sounds used throughout, especially the ending of ‘If 6 Was 9’.

The thing that gets me the most with Hendrix is how consistently fantastic every song is. There's nothing that's boring, or unimaginative, or lackluster. Everything on this album is crisp and magical. Excellent psychedelic rock

Enjoyable listen but never truly hooked me in

I've now listened to every album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and all I'm gonna say is by U.S. standards, they were a One-Hit Wonder(although Hendrix's admission in the 27 Club was the main reason why). Other than "Are You Experienced", the other two albums are mediocre on their best day. That's not to say Jimi Hendrix wasn't one of the greatest guitarists of all time. However, these songs essentially rely on Hendrix's epic guitar solos, and while it's fine for awhile, it gets old. Favorite Track: "If Six Was Nine".

Hendrix's guitar is probing and epic. The album is a bit more playful than I expected.

This is the only Hendrix album that I couldn't name. It's not the Jimi I'm used to. It is, to me, more experimental and "out there" than the other two. It was fine, but I'm not sure if I was on the right drugs to really like it.

It’s ok but too much talking and noise

If you’re a millennial like me, understanding the impact of Axis on modern music is hard to put into context. There are guitar sounds on this album which had never been heard before and would never be mastered so expertly again. Jimi’s manipulation of the instrument sent a shockwave through the musical universe, and things were never the same again. Does that mean this album is perfect? Not exactly. It doesn’t surpass the cohesiveness or consistency of several albums during the same era, but it’s pretty damn close. Also, Jimi’s lyrical content is a little too abstract on this album. It’s hard for me to create a bond with an album when half the lyrics are an indecipherable psychedelic mess.

I've listened to the hits of this album many times, but never the whole thing. I liked hearing Jimi's deeper cuts - an interesting mix of genres with more jazz influence than I expected.

I can't believe I've never listened to this album in its entirety. I understand why Jimi's considered one of the greatest. The chord progressions, the syncopation, the rhythmic delivery of his lyrics in addition to the lyrical content. The compliments and studio firsts continue. Perhaps subconsciously I knew of this, but Bold As Love being originally sung and written by Hendrix kind of blew my mind.

What more can I say about Jimi Hendrix! The legendary guitar sound accompanied by a great band. Experimenting with various sound effects that outline the time of psychedelia. My only complaint is perhaps the recording quality and the fact that some songs end with a fadeout, but how can you stop a band like that when they start their instrumental adventure!? Excellent.

I really like how laid back it feels while still being relatively experimental. I enjoyed my experience, and everyone featured is just so talented.

Some strong guitar playing

Once again I am made to question how I feel about my heroes. I basically have the same feelings about Axis as I did Electric Ladyland. A few songs are some of my favorites ever recorded, and most are pretty good. Little Wing is one of my few true 10 out of 10 songs. Castles Made of Sand, If 6 was 9 and One Rainy Wish and Bold As Love are all S tier. She's So Fine should have been sung by Jimmy. Why'd someone else sing that? I mean it's Hendrix how could it not be five stars. I knew a lot more songs on this album than I realized because I had never listened to it before in its entirety. It was a nice little gem.

This was a pleasant surprise to me - not because I don't like Hendrix, but because I didn't expect the songs so be so approachable and catchy. I dig it!

Jimi’s been played to death and it’s a lot of wank, but you can’t ignore the cultural blast radius he left behind. The rhythm section carry the weight; the guitar just gets the headlines.

5/5. It's just a fact that the first three Jimi albums are perfect. Although this one may have less hits and be less known in general, it still stands among the other two records, with a lot more psychedelic influence. The guitar playing as always is excellent, and even the song from the other member on vocals is great. Relative to the other two, it is the weakest but relative to albums in general, it's awesome. I listened to this album several times, and I find it hard to come out with a review that is not just 'sounds great' or 'they play very good' or even 'full of nice grooves', but I think I'll have to leave it at that. It is great. Nothing more to add, really.

sounds cool but the stereo bugs my head out, i know he's influential, and groundbreaking guitarist, his music pisses me off though.

Jimi is such an amazing guitar player (not saying anything new there). The bass and drums really drove the sounds too. The use of the right and left speakers for different sounds or moving the same sound back and forth created a unique spatial environment that put you in the room with the band.

He is unreal. Really wish he lived past 27.

Great songwriter, turmoil in his personal life adds more depth to the material, not always in a good way. The songs are clear slices of everyone’s life, but as a full statement there is too much.

This album is a great intro to Hendrix. More classic song structures and hints of the genius. Just enough classic songs to make this a 5. So much style and charisma in this project.

Not my favorite Jimi album but still full of great songs. Little Wing is in my top 5 of all time, and the only complaint I have about it is that I wish it was several minutes longer. This album continues the incredible synergy of the trio that make up the band; Mitch Mitchell's drumming in particular is absurdly good on this record. The fact that Noel Redding on bass handles a lot of the actual timekeeping on this record is brilliant. And of course Jimi's playing is it's own whole thing. The album runs through a lot of different tempos while maintaining Jimi's signature style, which one would expect. You could say this whole thing is just another Hendrix album, and it is. All of them are so good that it's a huge compliment. I dunno, there's basically I nothing I dont' like about this album. It's perfect.

I had a lot of exposure to Hendrix as a kid and never really bit in. Dad was right, it's pretty good.

It's not my favorite sort of album to listen to, but it's pretty unbelievable in terms of the sounds and production work. Jimi with the guitar is pure magic. I've always said that his voice is one of the things that holds him back a bit, but I enjoyed it a lot more in the context of listening to a full album. His songwriting not being off the charts is what holds it back from a 5 though, still just excellent musicianship.

Okay. I must have listened to a different album. I have read a bunch of reviews telling me how wonderful this album is, with frequent mentions of different musical styles. All i hear is a bunch of riffs on The Wind Cries Mary, and all of them fairly flaccid imitations. Are You Expirienced is an incandescent bombshell that told us music would never be the same. Electric Ladyland was a masterpiece with a couple of filler tracks. Axis is all filler, no killer.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience's second five-star album of 1967 (talk about being on fire!) is a psychedelic masterpiece that should be in the library of anyone who has even a passing interest in having a well-rounded collection that properly represents the music of 20th century. Every bit as good as The Jimi Hendrix Experience's debut album (Are You Experienced?) that was released earlier in 1967. Has anybody ever released two stone cold classics in the same year besides Hendrix? Honest question.

Unarguable that this album be on this list. Not a go too for me but I can appreciate the influence and still have fun listening to it.

Psychedelic rock is not in my wheelhouse but this album was damn good. Not because it’s Jimi, which he’s incredible, but because of the effects that I heard from the various tracks - it felt very much ahead of its time. Favorite Track: Little Wing

If the core is Hendrix's recording career spans about two years then album 2 of 3 can serve as a transitional album. Sonically rich This eclectic collection lacks the urgency of the first album but you can hear the tricks he has picked up and twisted from Dylan and the Beatles. Excellent production and musicianship shine even if the highest highs are not to the heights of the albums it sits between. Still great but JH has a high bar.

I enjoyed this. I've never really listened to Hendrix much but I probably should.

You know how on albums from this era that drugs make the album and other times drugs made the album? This is definitely one of those.

It's easy to dismiss Hendrix as a virtuoso guitarist, but this album proves there's so much more to him; it gets into Jimi's head and he gets into yours via stereoscopic effects and mega riffs. Almost auteur-like in its ability to take the album form and expand it beyond its limits.

Really liked this one, first time hearing it (other than Little Wing) and came away feeling very positive about it both individually and as a big piece - I think the opener ties things together thematically and it's both very listenable and challenging in places.

This was originally my least favourite Hendrix album but after listening again I don’t even know if that’s a thing, they’re all definitely 5’s, every single song on here is just so good, Mitch Mitchell on drums goes insane and obviously the guitar is peak, even songs I didn’t like as much on previous listens like if 6 was 9 I completely changed my perspective on especially as the drumming goes particularly hard on that one. Also, the intro “exp” was a lot funnier than I remembered. Overall, I may as well just give it a 10.

I have never listened to a Jimi Hendrix album in full before, which is exactly the reason I started this challenge - there is so much more to discover. What a fantastic intro. This is without doubt a great album, but the artwork is even more dear to me.

Is Little Wing really that short?

I know Jimi is a genius. I just don't enjoy listening to his music. A song here or there is fine, but a whole album is just not my thing. Castles Made of Sand is lovely.

I recognize and value his cultural significance, but I’ve never been able to connect with his music.

I'm not currently on enough psychedelics to fully appreciate this record. It's groovin, rockin, trippy, and sexy. I know my Dad was in to this, and for him I enjoyed the listen. Maybe I'll go smoke some weed now.

My personal favorite Hendrix record, even if it's not his best. I love his spirit here. There's an unbridled sense of discovery on this one that I just identify with. Most of my favorite Hendrix riffs are here, and I adore the 8-string bass usage throughout on certain tracks. Dig it. 9/10

8/10 Sandwiched between two of the best Rock records it unfortunately doesn’t get a ton of light in conversation, but it undeniably is a kick ass record with a lot of Hendrix’s best work. That’s the wrong India guys!!!!!

What do you know, another great album! I enjoyed listening to this one I can tell Hendrix had a lot of talent, it’s a shame his career ended so early. I almost gave this one a 5 but I know he will have more albums here and I want to save that spot for another one. One last thing, look into the reasoning behind the album cover, it’s kinda funny Favorite Tracks: If 6 Was 9, Little Wing, Wait Until Tommorow, and You Got Me Floatin.

This is the hundred fifth album I’m rating. I’ve never listened to a full Jimi Hendrix album before. Adding to my Playlist - Up from the Skies, Spanish Castle Magic, Wait Until Tomorrow, Ain’t No Telling, Little Wing, If Six was Nine, You’ve Got me Floating, Castles Made of Sand, She’s so Fine, One Rainy Wish, Little Miss Lover, and Bold as Love. Not Adding to my Playlist - EXP. All in all I liked 12/13 songs. Jimi is very good.

This isn't Jimi at his most concise, but it is Jimi at his most experimental. All of Axis: Bold As Love is just fun. You can tell they're having a good time, trying out new things, getting properly weird with it. I don't think it's the best Jimi Hendrix album, but that's a very high metric. 9.5/10

Fijne muziek

This is Jimi. What makes him a legend is how he uses the guitar to speak to the audience. Little Wing is guitar perfection, even though I prefer the much longer instrumental take Stevie Ray Vaughn did back in the day. While this album is great, I could have done without that annoying screeching intro track. I guess I should have expected that from a psychedelic rocker like Jimi. It was borderline a 5 star album, but for that reason alone I'm dropping it down. ~ 4 Stars

The guitar tones, style, and even recording mix are WAYYY ahead of its time here for 1967. For that, this album gains major props. This is a really enjoyable psychedelic album, but is just not my favorite. I feel like it is very anti- what I should be saying as a guitarist, but there are so many other guitar players I'd rather listen to. The album is still GREAT, but I just needed to make that comment.
