Reviews (page 5 of 13)
I mean, it's freaking cool. I've listened to his discography and it's one of the most fun.
Beautiful. Not my usual thing but the intricacy and beauty of these tracks is undeniable
great album! 4/5
cool jazz: una estética de contención, melodías limpias, armonías sofisticadas y un swing más insinuado que explosivo. Move; Boplicity; Jeru; Moon Dreams; Israel; Rocker y Venus de Milo las mejores canciones
This is my fourth, and I believe, last album by Miles Davis in this book. I didn't even realize there were so many Miles Davis albums, which to a jazz amateur like I am, having four Mile Davis albums seems a bit much. Even though I have listened to approximately 894 jazz albums while going through the 1001 albums listing, I still am not sure if I can identify what is "good" jazz and what is "incredibly good" jazz. There is even a song on here with vocals! Darn That Dream is a fun song and this is a fun jazz album. What I like the most about it is the songs arrive promptly, leave promptly and Miles Davis doesn't spend time with his dick out just showing everyone how truly awesome he is. I listened to this one while I was doing work. For a few hours I forgot that work sucks the soul out of my body and creates a void which only can be filled by life-ruining cancerous cells or naive joy believing the future will be brighter. So, for that, I give this album a nice rating.
Nice jazz background music.
Nice classy jazz
It’s not Kinda Blue, but it’s still a great listen.
8 / 10
Not my favorite Miles
I'm not a massive jazz fan, but I did like this album.
This album was a lot 'cooler' than I remembered it, had a lot more variety than just the straight bepop stuff. Having some oddball instruments like the tuba and recorder in the mix was really fun! Miles just keeps getting W's for me
ooooh…. now this is more like it! love love love ❤️
16/01/2026 1. move - bass is realllly nice throughout.... trumpet is sososo goood. drums are completely fantastic!!! 2. jeru - horns are crazy! really liking this so far :) *3. moon dreams - really liking the start. very moody... sounds like the score of an old movie. love the solos... liking the ending. 4. venus de milo - more upbeat. really loving the bass in these songs. saxaphone is lovely... 5. budo - loving the start... the drums near the end!!!! really nice :) 6. deception - loving the horns at the start... the drumming is real nice as well. 7. godchild - bass and saxaphone are still great... nothing more to say about most of these songs, really liking them :) 8. boplicity - like the title of this... piano towards the end is nice. *9. rocker - loving the energy in this one! *10. israel - reall liking the beginning of this one... really nice ending as well!! 11. rouge - loving the drums again!! *12. darn that dream - lyrics?? not sure if the vocals make it sound a bit cluttered, but really liking it anyways :) really liked this one, looking forward to the other miles davis albums on here :)
I have been listening to and appreciating more jazz recently - this was a good album for my snowy commute
Love Mles Davis!
Such cool and incredible jazz!
Hard to place in context
It was Miles Davis, I could listen to it all day, but I think other Miles albums commanded my attention a little more.
The beginning of Cool jazz Move Venus de milo
Trochę festive uczucie, trochę bajkowe. Bardzo przyjemnie się słuchało. 🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🎺🥁
Cool
It’s just so damn smooth
8.18/10 jazzzzzz 4/5
Really delightful. Moon Dreams was my favorite overall. Venus de Melo. Overall the album is a delight hr to listen to. Very upbeat good vibes I couldn’t help but find myself in a positively good mood. 7.6
Heerlijke muziek!
My dad liked big band music so I always struggle to find it anything but “fuddy duddy,” so this isn’t immediately “cool” sounding to me. It’s a different beast to Glen Miller and co however. You can hear the bop in it. But, whilst I respect it, it doesn’t grab me like “kind of blue” or later Miles.
Excellent!
such a goated album
Kommer aldrig komma ihåg specifika låtar från Miles Davies men det är alltid trevligt att lyssna på

It's jazz so the bar is fairly low. But it swings along. I would struggle to tell you where things stop and start but I didn't dislike. A weak 4 but I enjoyed it.
I'll listen to it again, but I really liked it the first time. It deserve a more careful attention, though.
Not my cup of tea. At least for today.
🎺
Certainly sounds like jazz as I currently know it, but at the time, this must’ve been mind-blowing.
Very cool, as the name implies. Put it on when you want people to think well of you. Not my favorite jazz album but I understand why it's here.
This is a compilation album so definitely not what I'd come to expect from a Miles Davis record, but still a worthy listen and an enjoyable time - like all Miles Davis records. The guy just bleeds talent.
I don’t listen to Jazz at all. However I enjoyed it very much.
(sorry for the double-rating, but I have to clear my History)
Love Miles. I had to really sit with this one to "get it."
idk if its one of the most memorable miles albums for me but still
Lived up to the name, that felt very cool to listen to
An exceptional album by a legend of the genre. Obviously great
Great instrumentation and a sound that strongly invokes an era gone by. You can see the roots of the slower darker jazz among the upbeat melodies in this one. Songs are all super short like pop music which this may have been. The Wikipedia tells an interesting tale of how this album was made. Enjoyable but more as a reference to the late 50s than a jazz album in itself. Music still banging though
primeira experiencia com miles davis e seu cool jazz, gostei bastante.
This was cool and pleasant
I've listened to some Miles Davis albuns before, and they always amazes me for the same reasons. Very enjoyable to listen to
Lovely. Sounds like it would be played in the background of a black and white film
Miles Davis is a favorite of mine, but his early work leans more toward technical perfection than what I think he does best. His real strength is the soulful tone and the willingness to experiment, and that comes through more clearly later in his career. This is still a strong record, especially for the 1950s, but parts of it feel dated now. Solid overall. 8/10.
If you look up the word "cool" in the dictionary, you should see there a picture of Miles Davis playing the trumpet. So, the title of the album tracks.
“If peeing your pants is cool…”
It's good enough to make me dance on a London train platform
Each song sounded very different which I think is a feat for jazz
I've been really interested in getting into jazz, this album has definitely helped expand that.
Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool packs a significant punch in a small package. I was mostly introduced to Jazz through listening to samples in Jay-Z songs such as "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)," "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)...," and "Show Me What You Got." Miles' influence is demonstrated by other Queens artists such as Nas, whose vocals can be found on Miles' beats on the Evolution of the Groove album released circa 2007. It is no coincidence that The Low End Theory, an album by one of my favorite bands, A Tribe Called Quest, features bass from one of Miles Davis' longtime bassists, Ron Carter. Back to Miles Davis: while I am no expert at Jazz, Miles' contribution and evolution from Bebop to Cool Jazz really made a cultural impact. Gone were the powerful solos, and here stood 2-4 minutes of pure, cohesive jazz. As a fan of Rap and Hip-Hop, Cool Jazz stands at the forefront of samples and what I love about the genre. I listened to Birth of the Cool on a snowy December day, and the music felt like a warm scotch going down. Pure, warm music. This album featured no skips and received 9/11 likes: Move, Jeru, Venus De Milo, Deception, Godchild, Boplicity, Rocker, Israel, Rouge. This album receives an 81.8/100.
I enjoyed this. It was a good way to get some solid work done while it was playing.
Day 1 of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die with @marmeu. This was some really good jazz. I loved that first track so much— It was just really groovy. I don't have much to say other then I'm beginning to understand jazz more after this listen being my 2nd jazz album that I have heard so far. I know @marmeu is gonna love that I reviewed this album and STILL will complain to me in class about how this is better then TPAB and then go on my AOTY account and check my 100s and say it's better then all of them. But anyway, great album, I recommend this (if you haven't heard it) to most people who listen to jazz. 85/100
Starting to get Jazz
Overall Rating: 8.5/10 Favorite Song: Venus De Milo
Way cool
Best song title names ever.
I definitely enjoyed it. Some songs were a little chaotic for me but a lot were lovely and more soothing. I still don't totally get jazz lol but i'm getting there.
Nice and upbeat the entire time, sounds so magical and easy to listen to. Great introduction to Miles Davis.
He’s on his way.
Aside from the final track with its very dated vocals, I enjoyed this album. I don't think it's the style of music that I could ever truly love however.
Epitome of jazz
Thoroughly enjoyed.
Nice …to quote the fast show. Cool indeed. Great collection of jazz hard to imagine this is 70 years old as it still sounds cool and interesting now. Odd last song brings the album down a bit . Dropping a possible 5/5 to 4 .
Great
Fue muy bueno , me recuerda obviamente a la serie cowboy bepop, entretenida, de fondo, nada mal
It's a good album, but a little too "big band" for me. I prefer his more experimental stuff late on. 3.5/5 Might listen again
Quite liked this as an intro to Miles Davis - i assume his landmark album ‘Blue’??? is a bit more avant-garde? Anyway it gets a 4 this time
Had a delightful time listening and coding to this
Very smooth and classy, be bop I think it is? Will return to, good way to start the day 😂. Need a few more listens to digest. Some really nice drums and trumpet on “move”.
Cool
Smooth! Not my usual fare but I wouldn’t turn it down.
Cool
Very cool Miles is a surprisingly consistently impressive considering we aren't really into jazz
So this is where Cool started. I like it.
jazz album! maybe next time I go to listen to the whiplash soundtrack, I should pick this up instead. budo is real life caravan.
Cool pour travailler. Bon jazz
This Miles Davis guy is pretty cool.
very cool
Miles 'consecutive Fridays' Davis delivers for consecutive Fridays.
I know this is cool on an intellectual level and it is by no means unpleasant. It's just not my cup of Diet Pepsi.
jazzy
I read Miles's autobiography not too long ago, so it was great to have a focused listen to this album that was so innovative in its time.
Pretty cool. Saved a song: N RYM: Y (#984)
interesting I liked it. not ever bothered much with cool jazz but quite enjoyed this, super interesting instrumentation
I appreciate Jazz more and more as I age. Punchy little 35 minute instrumental albums that set a mood rather than modern music's tendency towards simplified beat and melody. No one has ever gotten a jazz song stuck in their head like a pop song, maybe that's why it's not as popular. But it's nice to have on in the background. To dim the lights, have a cocktail and smoke a cigarette out of one of those long holders. It's all the same but it's timeless and cool, like a 3 piece suit.
Cool
Nothing really stands out here because it is all good, balanced jazz. Worth studying.
One of the most important albums on Jazz. It's a little in-between big band and cool for my taste but set the path for cool jazz sound. 4.5
Laid back "cool jazz" kuulamine. Väga raske oli midagi siit meelde jätta. Sellegipoolest on album suht revolutsiooniline oma aja kohta ja siin on ikka head kraami.
not a bad album at all, pretty good sounding. unfortunately I don't listen to jazz much to truly appreciate it. 4/5 favourite tracks: darn that dream, rocker, jeru, moon dreams
I mean they're obviously great players, but I just don't think this is how jazz is meant to be listened to. Jazz should be a live experience, listening to a studio album just feels odd. Favorites: Venus de Milo, Budo, Godchild
Need to explore more jazz as it’s another one of my blind spots. Liked this quite a bit. But I bet I’ve only scratched the surface. 4/5
7/10
Very nice jazz album, miles davis is a talented man but not quite 5/5 for me
Nice jazz.
I love this album.
Awesome album maybe even 4.5
Love Miles. Cool.
This is certainly a 'cool' album of jazz from one of history's most acclaimed trumpeters. Miles Davis leads a diverse band of brass [French horn, trombome, tuba], woodwind [alto and tenor saxophone], piano, bass and drums through a tight 12-song set of highly influential jazz numbers such as 'Moon Dreams' and 'Boplicity'. Although this record was released in 1957, the recordings actually took place throughout 1949-50. Davis' trumpet takes centre stage throughout the entire album, showcasing his talent as a jazz artist with swagger and feel. While it's difficult to pinpoint his influence across contemporary popular music, there's no denying his status as a key innovator within the jazz genre. For every Miles Davis, there's likely a large swathe of jazz musicians who've been forgotten about, and as far as the greats of jazz are concerned, he's definitely up there with Louis Armstrong. If you're looking for something different musically, or just want a nice, relaxing album to chill out to, chuck this on! Best songs: Moon Dreams, Budo, Boplicity
This is good, but not quite as good as Miles Davis would later get on Kind of Blue. Still, pretty solid and Davis' trumpet tone is amazing as always.

Surprised by how much I lied this!
This album is just so easy to listen to. It can almost carry you.
Får det här verkligen vara med? Då pratar vi naturligtvis inte utifrån musikalisk kvalitét. Där finns det alltid rum för Miles. Men detta är ju ett samlingsalbum. Olika inspelningar från 1949 - 50. Årsbästalistan hade i alla fall lagt in ett veto. Men, men nu är den med och då får vi ta det därifrån. Titeln är spot on.
Cool
Smooth
Fun fact this is Lisa Simpson's favorite album
So glad Miles birthed cool, must have been a pretty lame world before this came out.
jazz top
legend
Rich and engaging, abstract enough for achieving focus, I really liked it
Very energetic.
Good, easy jazz. Feels like a gateway record, accessible and deep.
If you like Jazz
This was fun. Very melodic.
Timeless and oozing with talent and just raw coolness.
This was pleasant, jazz for me is at best pleasant and at worst deeply irritating. It's nice and easy to listen to but the emotional landscape for me is just cleaning the house on a Sunday morning with a lot of coffee. Which is not bad!
A master at work
Oh yeah
here we go. this comp is not one I'm familiar with, but it being stuff he's worked on since 1949 is crazy. it goes to show how in love with arranging and composing music he really was. at that point, there really was no cool jazz and him goin more classical but unconventionally is pretty remarkable. it displays an era when his songs weren't long and unwieldy, rather they are concise and almost straight forward standards. Boplicity is fun. so is Rocker, like walking in a park back in those days. i like it even tho its kinda like him finding his footing before something like Bitches Brew. Move is great. Godchild is different but good. I wish i had more of a personal connection to it, but I'd say still 4 outta 5 even if its a compilation.
Pretty cool jazz. I don't have a lot to say about the album but I really liked it. Lots of good standards came out of it like Boplicity.
mr. miles davis gad ebe scho fast immer ha mi sicher scho jazziger gfühlt als jetzt grad aber generell sicher 4* verdient
cool indeed
I don't have the historical knowledge to fully appreciate what this style was such a departure from. But I really enjoy it - it has a very classy sound.
This album is great. 4 Stars
So smooth. Hard not to give Miles less than a 4.
If peeing your pants is cool… Great cool jazz album. I didn’t realize this was a compilation album out together by Capitol Records from multiple sessions Miles Davis recorded over the course of a year or so. My favorites tracks are Move, Jeru, Venus de Milo, Budo, Boplicity. Every song is good though, and this album is a great straight through listen.
jazzy
This apparently is "cool jazz" which means that all other jazz must be "square jazz"? Whatever you call it, I like it better than more freeform jazz. This is pretty good. I would definitely listen to this again. Move and Moon Dreams are particularly good.
I used to listen to this album a lot the way Miles Davis intended: as background music while I studied in college. Listening to it while working almost 30 years later probably isn't any better. But I remember this well, even though it blends together in my pedestrian brain. Obviously it's a landmark album, and it has a one of best titles of all time.
I never get tired pf Miles Davis
Not a huge jazz listener but I enjoyed it
I don't know much about Jazz, but I can say I did not find this album pretentious as some other Jazz things I've heard, and it was quite enjoyable. 7/10
Its smooth, simple and complex. I enjoyed that I could follow along with the songs and didn't feel scattered. Was it mind blowing, no but it was nice to have a jazz album I could simply listen to and enjoy.
Cool was born in 1957, still cool nearly 70 years later
Slightly prefer the modular jazz of Kind of Blue or the hard fusion of Bitches Brew over the cool jazz of this but this was still an enjoyable listen from a master craftsman. Helps that the great Max Roach is on the kit.
Delightful jazz. Very cool indeed
Was alright, but not very impactful to me personally
I don't know much about Jazz, but this was a nice album to have in the background while I worked on things.
That is Jazz for sure. Matched my morning coffee.
𝘉𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘰𝘭 may not have the universal aura of 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦, but it’s a landmark in its own right. Miles Davis and his nonet trade the frenetic energy of bebop for elegance, subtlety, and carefully arranged textures. The result is a cooler, chamber-like jazz that still feels fresh in its restraint — a pivotal step in Davis’s evolution and in modern jazz history.
A pleasure to listen to, it didn't feel like it was overworking my brain like some jazz, especially free jazz, does.
Hard to believe this was the 1950s. The speed, the creativity the creative flow through each song was excellent. If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.
Definitely cool. Much more approachable than some jazz can be.
It is cool. I don't know much about jazz or jazz history but Miles Davis is infamous in music. The music is quite pleasing and nostalgically reminiscent of a bygone era. I imagine walking into a late night, smoky, dimly-lit den and sitting down not just to hear this, but to listen to it. Back when music was live and people danced.
Three jazz albums in a row, but I ain't complaining.
I'd expected to like this. It was pleasant, tight jazz. A big band sound was woven in and out, but each time I decided to classify it as such, it would cut to some nice piano. I like jazz, but I think I'm still not in the frame of musical enjoyment where I can devote my full attention to it. As a result I drift in and out a little bit. Perhaps if I was watching the performance, I might think differently... That's something to ponder later. One album per day. 4 Stars.
This is like going to a high-end European car dealership. You show up at dusk, and as the sun sets, the dealer mixes you a Manhattan and offers you a cigar. You don’t smoke, but you appreciate the cocktail. You sit in luxurious armchairs in his office, discussing what you’re looking for in a car. As you finish your drinks, he takes you to look at an impeccable sedan, fitted out with mahogany dash and rich Corinthian leather seats. You turn the engine on and a shiver crawls up your spine as the engine hums. The V8 purrs a quiet yet stern roar, telling you that it can keep calm and maintain decorum, but can also roar if needed. You don’t even need to take it for a test drive. This is the one.
Okkkk
He is cool and there’s no other words to describe it
hard to compare jazz records. good genre though.
9/10. feels kinda refreshing to listen to some oldies especially the one with jazz genre after marinating myself in viral tiktok songs in the daily basis. good albums, it's giving coffee shop vibes, I'll definitely comeback to listen to this albums sometimes. the albums is not too long too, 30 mins is definitely the perfect length for songs like this.
A compilation album which seems (to me) to be a cheating. But here you go. I can't penalize the artist for the choices made by someone/a group years later...these are pretty great cuts. His best work? not by a margin. But better than half of what we have to trudge through here? Hell, yes. 4 stars.
Good jazz. Different than the other jazz I’ve listened to. A bit more upbeat.
Wat lekkere jazzdeuntjes die mooi bijna allemaal in de instrumentale en dinner playlist gaan.
The title pretty much says it all here. It doesn't get much jazzier than this!
Loved it. So much to unpack in terms of melody and song structure.
Still partial to Kind of Blue but this is good, should listen to again.
Classic jazz. I’m a fan!
Definitely cool, but me personally I prefer when he gets a little freakier.
This album is cool (unironically). So good. Miles Davis kicks ass. This doesn't feel like a jam album. It has structure and is interesting. Also, "Move" FUCKS. Almost a perfect 5/5 but actually a 4.5. Liked Songs: "Move" , "Jeru" , "Venus De Milo" , "Deception" , "Godchild" , "Rocker" , "Israel" , "Rogue"
Hört sich cool an, ist rein Instrumental und die einzelnen Songs ähneln sich alle aber es macht gute Stimmung
I get that it's a landmark, transformative album, and I was blown away by In a Silent Way earlier in the list, and I feel like a heathen not giving this five stars, but I just don't quite feel it the same way.
Very cool
This was a really cool album to check out, especially knowing the tracks were recorded between 1949 and 1950. From what I’ve learned, this album was a key part of starting the ‘cool jazz’ movement. Cool jazz was a response to the energetic big band bebop sound of the time. It’s more minimal, restrained, and laid-back, making it a smooth and relaxing listen. For its time, this was a big shift in jazz, and it’s fascinating to hear how it all started.
What the angels in heaven are listening too!
Superb!
I’m not a fan of jazz music, but I enjoyed this album.
Maybe not the birth, but pretty cool nonetheless.
Cool would get cooler
Good, needs more time with me
Solid jazz album but not as iconic as some of the others. Good background music I wouldn’t be upset to listen to, but wouldn’t be a go to jazz album for me.
Another week, more Miles Davis. But we're going back to his earlier work this time, where the "Cool" was apparently birthed. I'll be the judge of that. A smooth listen. Davis was the gold standard in jazz for a reason, and the efforts of the rest of the nonet were instrumental (pun intended) in this compilation recording too. Nice and relaxing, yet simultaneously expressive. I got Davis's "Kind of Blue" much earlier in my journey here, and while I think nothing quite compares to that work, this was still a classic effort during the "cool jazz" era.
Title speaks for itself. He is cool.
Jazz makes me feel like life itself is an instrument, and I’m just finding my part in the tune
Звук древний совсем.
Snappy, fast bebop jazz. Mid 50, feels more modern. Cool indeed. Perfect dinner party jazz.
Man. That title is right. This is cool as hell! Of course, I expected that going into it. This is Miles Davis we're talking about. He's only one of the greatest jazz artists to ever live. This is the earliest album of his on the list, 1957's Birth of the Cool. Well, "album," that is. You see, Birth of the Cool is actually a compilation album, containing 11 3-minute-ish recordings from 1949 and 1950. Does that make these recordings the oldest of the 1001 albums list? I don't know. There's probably a sample from like a movie from the 1930s or something in a different album. Despite their age, these recordings are great. This is perfect dinner party music and I mean that as a compliment. That's the neat thing about jazz. It's subtle enough to work as background music, but complex enough to be analyzed as a work of art. I love it. The short length of each song give this album a different vibe from the other Miles Davis albums on the list. There's definitely a difference between the shorter, more bebop-esque songs on Birth of the Cool and the longer, more experimental tunes of an album like In A Silent Way that make this album feel different enough from the others to potentially warrant the inclusion on this list. This is definitely my least favorite of the 3 albums of his that I've heard, but I can't deny the incredible talent that Miles Davis and his band show off in these recordings. Great stuff. High 4/5.
Miles is still clearly a trumpet god. I hope we also get "Bitches Brew" at some point. This is as cool as an album can be. Great listen. 8/10 fav songs : Jeru & Budo
Barry B Benson once asked, “you like Jazz?” No, to be honest, not really. This is a good album, perhaps great to those who like jazz. But i can’t hack it. Regardless i’ll give it four
Cool
I really liked this album. Very different to other jazz I’ve listened to, much cooler in tone, which I think is to do with the omission of the tenor sax? Such an arresting opening and ending
YEAAAHAHAHAHAHAH i like miles davis :] have 1 of his records on cds... not this one though
I'm not a big jazz fan, but this album was nice background music at dinner. And Miles Davis is a legend.
This is a good album, but not the best that Miles Davis can do. While this album has some great tracks on it, it really just made me want to listen to Kind of Blue. Standouts: Moon Dreams, Venus De Milo, Move Rating: 4/5
Very enjoyable and forward thinking jazz album, though the final, vocal-led track really isn’t my thing.
That was some top teir jazzy jazz for sure
don't know jazz too well, but the album sounds cool to play during a dinner party...very mellow chill vibe
Delightful. Out of the three Miles Davis albums I've gone through on this list, I'd probably say I'd rank this lower, but it's still a nice listen. Liked Venus De Milo and Moon Dreams the most.
Can't believe nobody was cool until 1957
An amazing and very atmospheric Jazz album. A classic 4/5
Easy listening. No one song stuck out to me but I enjoyed the album as a whole. I saved it to my library to use as study music in the future.
Very solid jazz album. I like Davis' more experimental stuff more but this is still very good I mean it has "Venus de Milo" so I can't go lower than 4.
Cool.
I really like this, but I'm struggling with how to rate it. like, it's entertaining to listen to and very cool indeed. musically delicious and satisfying at the same time, would I ever seek this out as something to listen to? jazz rarely fits into my life so how I typically rate albums on here (how likely I am to relisten) doesn't work on this as well. I landed on 4 stars because it's pretty much a 5 star album that I don't want to listen to
Awesome jazz album. Feels generic but probably because it is so influential.
Not my favorite Miles album, but even then - it's pretty damn good.
Another excellent Miles Davis album
Every Miles Davis album we’ve had has been superb and this continued it
This got me reading up on the origins of the slang, "cool", which is attributed to 1940s jazz. This album sett a milestone for the specific genre of "cool jazz." Tt's interesting to listen to the albums that precede an artist's magnum opus (in this case, Davis' Kind of Blue), as you can see the toeing the line of classical music (and though relaxed, cool jazz has the seriousness of classical) and something else, something new - that though there are intricacies in the composition, there is more improvisation, and at times, more emotion. I see Davis buliding the foundation for these complexities and emotions in this album. Perfect for sipping a coffee to, writing to, or just daydreaming to.
what a random album to pick, Blue Note was already in its heyday by 1957 and 'Round About Midnight came out the same year which is much better. Either way, still a good album. Starts off on an unimpressive note, and while none of the songs on the album are really memorable, Godchild and boplicity are highlights. 3.75 rounded to 4
Oh man. More Jazz? I'll do my best, but I'm just not sure what I'll have to say. It's always fine, and it always has sophistication that my ears apparently are too stupid for. Listening Notes: -Yep sounds like Jazz -Moon Dream has a slow, languid feel I like Review: I really wish I had something to say about jazz stuff. I don't. I can recognize its influence everywhere, and it always sounds fine. It's clearly a unique contribution to music that American culture (notably, African-, and Jewish-American culture) is rightly proud of, but its more opaque to me than any other music. Not having lyrics doesn't help. Since I perceive this as a deficiency of mine and not of the music, I will continue to give every jazz album 3 or 4 stars until I know what I'm supposed to get out of it. This seems good relative to the other jazz. So 4 I guess?
This is great jazz. Unfortunately for it, I am of the opinion that jazz music only functions as background music and this did nothing to dissuade me of that fact.
Me hubiera gustado escuchar uno de estudio y no uno recopilatorio. Dicho esto, muy bueno. Miles Davis es lo mas grande que hay. No es mi disco favorito de él pero lo escucharía sin dudas.
Very jazzy.
oh i do love to tap my toe and wag my index finger why does it feel like the trumpet has words coming out of it and i can understand it? (i didnt get enough sleep)
I love the Monster's Inc soundtrack
Before: Woot. Miles. It's not one of the miles records I've listened to a lot either. Should be fun After: a really interesting stage for miles. Not my favourite but still great. More energetic than [x]'in with records, and much much more than the modal stuff. The tone is still there though. It feels a little bit more arranged. Slightly closer to a count basie band or Ellington etc. There is still mikes' slightly classical feel somehow even though it's quite bebopy.
The birth and ever-presence of cool, Miles Davis. What a fantastic, quick glimpse into the genius that is Miles. This record is such an easy one to listen to, keeping the attention high and just generally putting me in a good mood. The brightness of the record shines and it just sounds like the band is having a great time playing together, basically a recorded jam session. This is a fantastic album.
Great
Really is a cool album. Made me go looking for more Miles!
Every time I listen to capital J "Jazz" i wonder if this will be the listen in which I "get" it. I don't! I play music and I don't really understand what the fuck is happening in jazz, I usually trust that if the jazz I'm hearing has made it to me it has passed several quality checks and must be Important. So I feel weird putting a number on this! I think it moves way more than Kind of Blue, which I've heard way more and bought on vinyl once to look smart. It's probably perfect but I have no way of knowing, so get wrecked, jazz, i guess.
Норм джазец, но не лучшее от Майлза
#9 Birth Of The Cool ~ Miles Davis It's some good jazz that has started to evolve out of the era of bebop to prioritise feeling over technique. Miles Davis started out his fame by taking over the rapid fire fingers of Dizzy Gillespie in the Charlie Parker Quintet and became well respected as a virtuoso of the trumpet equal to Gillespie almost immediately. But as years past, Miles was looking to expand and redefine his sound, no longer interested in being another Gillespie, but like him a pioneer of his own sound. Birth Of The Cool represents this attempt to deliver this new sound. Distinguishing features? The sound of this album is incredibly smooth and laidback compared to prior bebop albums. Solos are less flashy and feel more like breathes of fresh air through the haze of the jazz orchestra. And emphasise of 'jazz orchestra' because the arrangements of these songs are well thought out so that the sound of every trumpet, trombone, French horn (yes there's one in there), tuba (yes, also that), alto sax and baritone sax is taken into consideration and paired in different ways to elicit sounds of different timbres throughout each standard, or arranged in a fugue-like manner to propel the music forward like an oiled machine. If you are thinking this is sounding a lot like classical music, you would be correct, because this is basically the concept of classical orchestration, particular the impressionist or spectralist era of classical music: the creation of 'new sounds' via the blending of old. This is what gives Birth Of The Cool that very velvet sound: how each instrument interacts with one another in difference of pitch, volume and timbre. The relative slowness of each song helps drastically to highlight this 'new' sound of bebop jazz, as it basically puts Miles innovations forefront rather than the technique of the trumpeter. This is just a very solid album, and another good selection of songs for any jazz lover, or perhaps someone new to jazz to lay back and soak in the sound. If there was only one criticism, there's no big catcher song, it's all very neat and pretty but no earcatcher. It's just a well-done jazz session, which may be inconsequential for someone in tune to jazz, but might be a hard pill to swallow for a newcomer. Verdict: Birth Of The Cool, Birth of a Sound
This is more like it! I like the more structured jazz band set up. Not stressful but still talented.
This is such a strange album in Miles’ discography. Not squarely cool jazz but also not squarely bebop. It’s not like an album doing two sub genres at once is particularly novel, but it’s not something I associate with Miles. Overall, it's punchy, fun, and a good taste of what was to come. Favorite Song: Move/Rouge 8/10
Favorite Track: Moon Dreams
This sound always puts me in a good, relaxed mood.
cool jazz
Not in my Top Ten of Miles‘ albums
such a fun listen. his mastery of his craft on full display
Thank you Miles, very cool!
This album is definitely cool, as expected from Miles Davis. Really cool, chill vibes throughout.
In the Canon of course. Only a 4 personally because it would be bullshit to say I appreciate jazz enough to make it a 5.
He really birthed cool
I'm a fan of Miles Davis' later work in hard bop rather that cool jazz, but hard to not see how brilliant and influential this was
An album for a winter evening.
Cool 😎
sounds like a great jazz (good to be on the background but it has soul) so far 4/5 final thoughts 4/5 didnt dissapoint
Cool
Cool beans
Incredible for its time. Miles Davis walked so others could run.
own
This is not my usual kind of music, but is undeniably brilliant and it's influence across much of the music that has been released since is evident. Did enjoy this actually, very very cool. Very nice to study to.
Ech fends eifach crazy wie guet ond schnell mer cha Trompete oder Bass spele. Au söscht geds met mim begränzte Jazz wösse nüd gross uszesetze osser dass es ergendwie dör die gleiche Instrumänt emmer öppe gliich tönt.
Well... I wasn't expecting it to be as "COOL" as it actually sounded. Touche Mr. Davis
It's the quintessential jazz album for me among a few others my dad used to listen to. It holds both and special place and up. It's a classic piece and it's splendid.
++: Move, Jeru, Moon Dreams, Venus De Milo, Budo, Deception, Rocker, Israel, Rogue, Darn That Dream +: Godchild, Boplicity 9,4/10
Great Jazz Record. I think this record will get a few good spins during this coming summer. It was really smooth. It flows really effortless. (4.5/5.0)
Great, enjoyable, not his best.
today is somehow very hot and although i am indoor with the air conditioning blasting overhead, i still need some very cool (in a lot of sense) stuff. 4/5
Sometimes the album doesnt match the day and it hampers my enjoyment. Today was not that day. I sat in the grounds of a castle in Ireland, in the blazing sunshine reading a book and letting this beautiful jazz wash over me. I don't know enough about jazz to critique this or say why its good but i loved every second.
Always love Miles.
Love this style of old short jazz takes. Listened to a lot of this when in jazz band back in the day. Not my favorite Miles, but still classic for its time.
Enjoying this now than I expected - between a 3 and a 4, rounding up because I think I’ll need to listen some more to appreciate it.
Really chill for the most part, feels like a lot of the songs are based on familiar-feeling themes. Moon Dreams is an obvious highlight.
i love jazz! this is awesome. “moon dreams” was probably my favorite. always appreciate a good instrumental album. 4/5.
Exceptional
Great jazz album.
classic
I'm going to be listening to this more. Really good, complex, and complete feeling.
Probably the most appropriately named album on the list. A glorious combination of melody and texture, with just a hint of the experimentalisation that would follow. Considering this music is more then 70 years old it totally stands up. Can't give a 5 and Davis went on to develop even further, but as far as 50s jazz goes, pretty much perfect.
Very relaxing music to have going on in the background.
Legendary and emotional
It's a fun album, but as a huge fan of Miles Davis not my favourite of his. It doesn't have the cool slink of Kind of Blue or the manic energy of Bitches Brew. But it's still Miles so it's still great.
Yes, classic!
A classic. Glad I listened.
I love this album. I've listened to this so many times I'm surprised the grooves are still on the record. It's not Kind of Blue, it's less engaging than that but it's more of a 'play in the background' kind of album. It's super short, loses points for that but that may have been a result of the limitations of the time. I mean Miles Davis is one of the best ever, and he's definitely done better than this record. But still, even Miles Davis's run of the mill record is better than most. 4/5
Terrific record!
Cool Jazz Landmark album which introduced the more restrained, arranged and cerebral cool jazz style. Compiled tracks from sessions with a nine piece nonet recorded between 1949 and 1950 yet released in 1957. 7.0
Kino.
Big fan of this, started my day perfect
Just from the first few songs, this is a great album. I don't always love Jazz but this is cool! Good, solid Jazz music to listen to when working on homework, walking, or relaxing maybe reading. Good rhythm.
Not my favorite Miles
Very cool indeed, title does not lie.
Trumpet time!!! I'm in need of some jazz to chill to this is timely Have I moaned about star rating lately bc. This is so nice to listen to but I have nothing to say about it? I can tell this is really good!!! I can't like pay attention to it tho like idfk 4 stars ig
A great listen. Marks a polyphonic melodic development in the history of jazz. Short, peppy tracks for the most part. Miles and his band cooks, as usual. 4.5/5
I don't like this album as much as I like his modal stuff, but it's still a pretty decent one. 3.5/5
I've had a hard time with many kinds of jazz, and also Miles Davis. I consider this a personal failing. However, I did really enjoy this one. I think it's the shorter songs that really did it for me in this case. 3.75/5
classic jazz record.
if peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis
Some very listenable jazz. It's early period Davis, so it lacks the experimentation of his later albums.
I have been revisiting the compilation series of albums Rebirth of the Cool lately, which are great if you fancy some mid-nineties jazz electro. This album is great. I never reach for it but I enjoyed having it on and replayed it, which is always a good sign. Now (a few days later) I couldn't make a single track or hum any of it.
Classic Miles, incredible bops and some great solo moments. On par with sketches of spain imo.
Great way to start this 1001 Albums project! It’s probably not something I want to listen to every day, but I love this album! Definitely very cool!
This is the first album I’ve listened to with only instrumentals, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I obviously enjoyed it but it is my first time listening to something like this so it doesn’t really feel complete for me, even though everything about it was incredible.
This was a really good cool jazz album. Some big jazz hits on here and some chill moments. Not the most impressive or standout of all time but certainly very great. 4/5
Just solid, relaxing Jazz.
Not qualified to talk about jazz so won't, but it was a enjoyable album. I prefer later offerings from MD.
I don't know enough about jazz to give a detailed review, but Miles is always magical.
Shocked how much I enjoyed this one, energetic burst of energy. Gives me a certain spring in my step
# Album Name: Birth Of The Cool # Artist: Miles Davis # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: This album was cool. I enjoyed it as a whole. # Top Tunes: Whole album is worth a listen in its entirety # Would I listen to it again? Yes
I'm a total Jazz poser, but this album is definitely cool. If I understood Jazz better, it might get a 5.
I have known a couple of tracks on this record for years, so it was cool to finally hear the entire thing. It’s not full of standouts all the way through, but it still has such a great sound to it and “Israel” still has one of my favorite saxophone solos ever recorded.
Miles is always great 4/5
פעם ראשונה שומע אלבום גאז שלם ואהבתי
can’t go wrong with some great jazz on a sunny morning
A nice album. I enjoyed it. It’s hard to make music like this now. It ages really well.
