delightful. 4.
Philly girls have done quite well here. Building from Gamble and Huff roots. Sister Sledge is dominated by the production team of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, who wrote and produced the entire album. While it clearly sounds like it emanated from the Chic family, the sisters bring their exuberant vocals to the table. The hits are enduring. "We Are Family", "He's the Greatest Dancer", "Lost in Music" and "Thinking of You" all have been very influential and have been remixed and sampled over the years. Many of the remixes drive home the point that the originals (including production) were close to perfect.
Yeh it's disco banger after disco banger If you didn't know what you were getting before you popped this on, why are you even listening to music?
An album of massive hits I always forget they are all by them!
Good rhythms. Title track blunted by overfamiliarity but pretty great album overall.
Pinnacle disco. The Sledge sisters provides the main vocals while an orchestra of other musicians and singers color in the rest of the album. Did not know it was spearheaded by the guys in Chic or that they wrote the songs before knowing the Sledges. An album defining of its' era and endlessly sampled in the modern age.
A time capsule of the height of Disco instrumentation. The production is perfect in every way. It is Disco so that makes it lose a point, but I would say it’s well played anyway.
cok eglenceli ders calisirken guzel gidiyo
those singles are fucking outstanding
A few meh songs. But the best songs SLAP. It's so apparent how influential Nile Rodger's production is here (I realized the first songs was sampled by Will Smith). And despite being way too overplayed, relistening made me realize that "We Are Family" is overplayed for a reason: by itself, its so fun.
Slammin'. I bet watching this album live was so hot hot hot.
Is Sister Sledge the long lost sister to Zero 7? Okay, but maybe great grandmother. Regardless, I loved this way more than I thought I would. Specifically, the track You're a Friend to Me... sooo good.
Favorite song: One More Time
Listening to this album makes me want to listen to more disco soul.
Classic funky vibes
Vibes
Will Smith sampled this album's opening track on Getting Jiggy Wit It. Pop, Soul, and Funk all at once is such a GOOD vibe. Groove to this daddy-o! Works best on an uptempo track IMO 4/5 cuz I can't give it 3.5/5
Funk-disco-soul. Un megahit. Un 4.
This is a damn groovy album! I just love good bass work on any album and this is some damn exceptional bass work. And of course the titular track is an all time classic. "He's the Greatest Dancer" has to be my favorite song on the album though.
Lost in music 🎶 I love disco. My fav songs are We Are Family and One More Time
I would probably dance to that, or maybe I did
8/10
Super fun album to get ready to! Listened to it before the bucks game and it got me in a good mood!
Its a pretty great album, and from the perspective of 2022 its absolutely nuts how literally every track has been sampled in basically everything since. 4/5
Kind of an all women Jackson 5. Very, very cool and groovy basslines. We are family Lost in music Thinking of you
Disco is underrated and this album is much better than I was anticipating. Nile Rodgers remains undefeated. 4/5
Piacevole, avvolgente, caldo.
fun!
Nile Rodgers!
Listened to on 10/3/22 4/5 Favorite song: we are family, lost in the music, someone loves me It’s impossible to listen to this album and not want to dance - it’s SO fun, flirty and even the ballads were beautiful
Every song makes you want to dance in place. Gotta love the classic WE ARE FAMILY
Didn’t realise they had so many bangers
Great disco album
Brilliant. Niles can do no wrong.
You’ve heard the song now listen to the album
Now! That's what I call music! But I must wonder about all those strings in the disco era. Did violinists playing for Sister Sledge get more money than, say, violinists in the New York Philmarmonic? There is a lot of funky sweeping strings in the disco era, how did they do it?
so much fun
So many disco-tastic hits.
Maybe one of the best soul album I've ever heard.
Groovy and catchy as hell, definitely a classic that I can't believe fell under my radar. I haven't heard much disco so this is definitely top 1 for now.
The album give some vibes of the 80's, it starts very energetic and then slows down the pace of the music. The voice is great in every song and the instruments were great.
July 12, 1979. Comiskey Park, Chicago. A sad, sad and tragic day. Disco, when done well, has no equal, musically, for danceability, for joyfulness, for pure hedonistic pleasure of moving your body. This album has some cracking good disco on it. But also some crappy disco. The slow end-of-the-night numbers are just plain uninteresting,, even though they showcase the talents of the performers admirably. The higher energy disco hits, though, are superb.
This was a really fun, solid album.
Very good late 70s album, didn't add to Playlist but thoroughly enjoyed
Wow this has a lot of hits in it. Really takes me back to school dances. Disco at it's finest courtesy of Nile Rodgers. 1001 albums could have a whole genre in his name (Chic has 2 albums as well). Amazing how many cultural references have spawned from this too - a lot of people unaware where they came from.
Funny
This album grew on me quickly. It’s got the “we are family” classic on there, and the rest of it is just really smooth, groovy, and good vibes.
I dug most of this. Bonus points for inspiring the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates. Best track: We Are Family
I wouldn't say this is my genre of choice, but I did enjoy the album. Obviously, We are Family is a banger. He's the Greatest Dancer is good too and shows just how lazy the sample was for Will Smith's track. Overall, a decent listen.
Love the album cover photo, I feel like I know just what I'm going to get. And they do indeed bring smooth sweet harmonies along with some funky disco. Feel good fun time music. Thanks album generator!
Motown banger after Motown banger 4.5
Great listen, very surprised as not something I was looking forward to listening to when it appeared. Funky beats and didn’t realise the Chic influence and link
I mean, come on. This album is just fun and groovy. It isn't the most substantial, sure, but the feel of the music is enough to enjoy without an intense meaningful punch.
Gotta love that Chic sound!
If you appreciate disco, like I do, then this album is awesome - Nile Rogers in full form - with a carefully crafted album of funky, soulful, sexy songs. Obviously, 'He's the Greatest Dancer', and 'We are family' are monster hits, but the whole album is one of the defining records of the disco canon.
Classic disco album, hail to Nile Rogers
I wasn't looking forward to this listen simply because I have never like the song "We Are Family": it sucks. But the rest of the album was pretty damn good. It was funk/r&b with the lasting touched of disco, but it is what it is. It has Nile Rodgers stamp ALL over it. As a matter of fact, if I didn't know it was Sister Sledge, I would have guessed that it was Chic that I was listening to.
Pleasant listen. There's nothing wrong with this music but doesn't move me.
We are family is a classic and this just brings back memories. Great album overall but somehow also sounds a little disco era
8th July 2022 Listened in the morning getting ready to drive to Norfolk for Josh Wright’s wedding. Pure disco, doesn’t get better than this if you want to jive on the dance floor.
It’s a pretty good album from the height of the disco era from a group of sisters
Super funky, slightly girly, reminds me of car rides with my dad.
Didn't realize Will Smith sampled He's the Greatest Dancer for Jiggy with it, quite the jam.
great dance music - blast from the past
Diskoklassikoita! Eipä tästä muuta voi sanoa kuin että toimii. 4/5
Solid disco album
I'm listening to this on a Friday morning, the sun is shining. I made an effort to listen to it as a "new" album, and get past the feeling of being at a wedding or awful corporate away day, or another concert that Nile Rodgers has been wheeled out for (he just turns up to anything these days eh) and I really enjoyed it.
Great album with some brilliant highlights. Enjoyed so can’t complain.
pretty good, I enjoyed it - 8/10
Disco music huh, interesting to see how it holds up. Not bad so far, easy to groove to. I like the first song. The title song is a classic hit. Overall I enjoyed this album.
Классный альбом, очень понравился романтичный трек Somebody Loves Me. Здоровский.
About peak disco, marred only by the vapidity of some of the lyrics. It's rate for something to be such a complete period piece that can still stand on its own merits.
I like very much this music. Sister Sledge is a great band. "We are family" is a hit song.
I imagine this this is probably pretty classic for the genre. For what it's worth it was enjoyable.
I am very tired
Nice
Megabangerzz
Så gott som alla låtar lät likadana men det var en banger var gång...
Slick and similar to C'est Chic, but with more hits (4 out of 8 album tracks).
Funky Disco that has 3-4 really big bangers. I am especially enthralled by Lost in the Music and He's the Greatest Dancer, both of which are fun. I'm guessing We Are Family must have been a smash hit but commercials have ruined that song for me. While those songs are great, listening to the entire album is a rather repetitive experience with all songs having the same guitar riffs (which are cool in smaller doses) and bass lines. Also the more quite songs are kind a meh. It is a 3 1/2 album for me, but forced to choose, we end at 4.
Great
Smooth disco classic.
Classic. Great album, exceptionally funky.
Ones I didn't know were pretty slow. Still d i s c o. How do so many reviewers not like disco?!
It's got all the bangers! Great album.
I obviously knew We Are Family but the rest of this was pretty good too!
A bon entendeur.
The quality on an 8-song album is incredibly high, everything is done so well and so efficiently, almost nothing wasted, a no-skips contender, has everything you want.
Not a disco fan, but this is class. This was an absolute delight. Some classic disco here mixed in with some really lovely, soulful ballads. Nice and upbeat, will be listening to this again when I need a pick-me-up. 4/5, maybe deserves a 5 but I don't like disco enough for that.
Some really nice disco on this! All the people in the reviews who hate this clearly don't know how to have fun. Not a 5 because of the more boring songs (Somebody Loves Me, You're a Friend to Me).
Loved it!
Some great songs, can see a few reviewers knocking stars off as it goes on a bit too long with weaker songs, but don't believe in penalising for providing more. The first few tunes are more than worthy of a 4
Loved this. Start to finish. Really entertaining, listenable. Added.
I enjoyed it. A lot.
Probably liked this more than I should have
DISCO music!
I was surprised by how much I liked this album. The one issue I have with these disco/funk albums from the 70s is that the god damn strings always sound like shit. Dunno how they caught on. Despite that, it's a great record with some good performances and exceptional songwriting.
When disco was huge, I missed most of it because I was really into rock as a kid. I do recall a couple of these hits, but this was definitely my first full listen to this album. It's great! I'm not a dancer at all, but even this awkward listener was bopping his head to this album. The four sisters' vocals are fantastic -- wow, the harmonies. And when one of them takes a lead, it's just gorgeous. Nile Rodgers' guitar work is stunning. Bernard Edwards on bass and Tony Thompson on drums...Holy Schneikies, some serious chops there. Too easy to dismiss music when it's in a genre I don't listen to, and I admit that. This has some real fun and interesting songs on it.
Fun times!
Classic disco album. Love almost every song from it.
Fun, good for dinner party. Lost in music fav track
This originally put me off because of "We Are Family", but the album stands up as a decent work of the disco era, with R&B flavour. It probably helps that Nile Rodgers helmed the album, and he seems like a perfect match for the fierce vocal talents of the sisters. It's an album with plenty to dance about.
Rrr
The genius of the Chic Organisation working hand in hand with a great vocal group - smart, sophisticated disco, packed with hooks, great tunes, fabulous vocal performances. All the big hits open with the title (in classic Chic style) - Lost In Music, He's The Greatest Dancer, We Are Family - "BOOM! HERE WE ARE! TO THE DANCEFLOOR EVERYONE!"
Funky
With all the basic albums this week, I’m glad we could end on a high note. This was a great album with a ton of fun dance songs that also are good to chill to. We are family is a classic but I found myself jamming to almost every song on here.
Of course I'm familiar with the title track here, who isn't? Props to Sister Sledge for picking the perfect band name, as they are indeed four Sledge sisters. When I saw the tracklist, the song "One More Time" reminded me of Daft Punk, and oddly enough when hearing this thing get started I couldn't help but think they were influenced by this. Maybe not this particular album, but the disco fever. There are plenty of gems on here, not just the reunion fodder that is "We Are Family." But it helps to know that song was literally sung by four sisters in a band. Great album. Favorite tracks: He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family, Somebody Loves Me, Thinking of You. Album art: A great band photo, made a little funnier by the familial relationship. Perfectly late '70s though, especially all the mirrors. 4/5
Funk-disco-soul. Un megahit.
There are no less than four major hits on this album. In the context of this album, even those sound fresh, and swing like they must have done 42 years ago.
Good funky/soul vibe. Faves: Thinking of You, He's the Greatest Dancer
I love Sister Sledge! I don't ever listen to their work in albums though for some reason. Packed with bangers, very nostalgic for me makes me think of good times and makes me feel goooood! Only down side is Somebody Loves Me - not feeling them doing a slow song to be honest. Other than that it's all top for me, funky beats and just gold.
I understand why this group was so popular - they knew their sound and they stuck to it and stuck to it well. It's not really my jam, but I can see how the album is perfect for someone whose jam it is.
Disco cool
Some classic songs on here I forgot was SS. Enjoyed. V good fun
You can't deny it's a disco classic. You can boogie, you can sing, it gets ya bopping and I won't hear another word about it.
Some great disco classics on this album, although some of the slower tracks are a bit saccharine.
The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world that disco is bad! What a collection of smooth groovy bops. I only previously knew the title track, but recognised many of the others from later sampled songs. I enjoyed 'Thinking of You' the most, as well as 'He's The Greatest Dancer' and the title track of course.
Groovy, nice mix of slow and upbeat songs
Had me boppin and movin at my desk. Boogie woogie tushy for sure.
funk my weak spot
When you imagine disco, this sound is what you think of. Not many disco albums don't have a single filler track, and this is nearly one of them.
Copado mismo jajaj
Another classic. Reminds me of the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series champions
Great easy listening 70s vibe
okay
Surprisingly full of absolute bangers.
Yo I know disco is dead but like this was really fun dancy music. Considered giving this a 3 but its pretty enjoyable so rating it higher
Decent for a disco album!
Fabulous. This is one of the first albums I acquired on vinyl from a record store in the same shopping center as a pretzel place. Anyways.. the album is so much more than the title track. The first two songs are disco standards and “Thinking of You” is a personal favorite. 4/5 I recommend the Dimitri from Paris remix of “Lost in Music” as well.
Super funky album. Disco wasn't so bad huh?
Really funky, good tunes there. 4/5
Yes! Love! 4. Thinking of you best track. Banger after banger
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Now I know where so many samples come from.
Got me dancing ;)
Sad I had never listened to this. What fantastic classics
Was really getting into this one, some classic tunes
We are family and thinking of you are clearly the most groovy songs...love the overall album tone and all basslines are dope! --- Perfect to listen the entire album in one go
Simple and appealing with groovy bass lines that you can dance to.
Solid soul/disco album, plenty of smash hits on this 4*
was ok
A classic album. Nile Rogers in peak songwriting and producing form. So many disco classics which you’ll still hear at least one of on any given night out and will always bring the vibes no matter the sort of club you’re in. The Dimitri From Paris remixes are also pure fire.
Another album that got played twice during the day. So many classics! Nile Rodgers creating a legacy for himself, Sister Sledge and an entire genre.
When I listen to disco music I like to pretend I’m Matt Damon trying to escape from Mars. I enjoyed this a lot more than just the one hit I only hear at weddings.
most of this album is pretty catchy
Fucking great, and I don’t care
Bastante bueno.
Highlights - He's The Greatest Dancer, You're a friend to me Lowlights - Somebody Loves Me (too long), We Are Family The title track, in my opinion is the weakest of the bunch, and Somebody Loves Me is long and repetitious...But the rest of this album is fantastic, especially when you're gettin' jiggy with the Greatest Dancer. This is pure R&B/disco joy.
Então esse é o famoso We Are Family?? Loucura, muito bacana as músicas mas meio coisa que eu não iria ouvir intencionalmente.
Me ha gustado mucho la cancion de We are Family
Varios temazos de bailoteo
A goddamn CLASSIC. I always associated We Are Family with Motown; come to find out they are from Philadelphia. Still a great album.
funky af, nice finding. that easier to love track is a delight (even thogh my apple music likes to act and cut some tracks)
Beautiful, groovy, funky & sexy.
Had no idea "We are Family" was on this album
just what i needed today... fun album
Oooh baby, disco riffs to kick things off. Not upset about that. This is bringing me to the 'gettin' jiggy with it' era that followed in the 90s, and the disco revitalization (Get Lucky) that came afterwards. I don't know how much these sisters get credit as pioneers, but maybe the OG disco music isn't as bad as it's cracked up to be. And yes, I still hate the title track - credit that to being overplayed I guess. Now time to listen to Poolside's Daytime Disco playlist for the next 10 hours.
This is music from when I had a drive-in disco. Disco, among with a lot of other music styles, is still one of my favorite music styles. It was nice to listen to this album. I had not listened to it as an album but I know all the songs of the album. If I would go through my single collection I know I have some singles of ‘Sister Sledge’ there. I really liked the remixes.
Knew many of them. I'd say like 7/10
Great album, but so many disco hits it feels like a disco compilation. Amazing talent
Funky!
Can beat a bit of disco. Stone cold classics. Love the extra remixs
Funky album for a Friday!
that Friday feeling
Good dance music. Funky.
Groovy Thinking of you We are family
Lush, fun, and joyful. Maybe a touch repetitive, but doesn't really detract from the experience all that much. Favorite tracks: "He's the Greatest Dancer", "We Are Family"
Essential disco album, featuring Nile and Bernie from Chic. The Spotify version substitutes the radio edit of the title track instead of the full 8-minute version. YMMV for disco, but this should be at least a 3 star for everyone. 4 star for me, almost a 5, but a little filler takes it down a notch.
This is one of those things I never actively listen to, but even in like 15 seconds of the start of this album I knew I was gonna like it. Catchy AF, cool disco/R&B beats. Must make a mental note to listen to more of this stuff 4/5.
Dayum wait I kinda like this. Yeah it’s fire. Way better than le chic. 👀
We Are Family by Sister Sledge is a classic disco and R&B album from the late 1970s that remained hugely influential throughout the 1980s dance scene. Produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of Chic, the album delivers polished grooves, catchy basslines, and uplifting vocals that defined the era. Overall, I thought the album was okay. It has a fun, upbeat sound, and it's easy to hear why songs like "We Are Family" and "He's the Greatest Dancer" became enduring classics. The production is excellent, with tight rhythms and memorable hooks that still sound fresh today. That said, I found that I mostly enjoyed the well-known singles, while some of the deeper album tracks felt less memorable. The album maintains a consistent disco style throughout, which fans of the genre will likely appreciate, but it didn't always hold my attention from start to finish. Even though it wasn't a personal favorite, I can appreciate its importance in music history and its influence on dance, funk, and pop music. If you enjoy disco, funk, or the polished sound associated with the late '70s and early '80s, We Are Family is definitely worth listening to
A classic, but was it truly influential?
Classic. Really enjoyed.
"Lost in Music" and "We Are Family" still groove after all these years! The rest of the album is solid in a good way.
plesant fun bouncy album, thought some of the deeper tracks were pretty good. Also who can hate "We Are Family" 3/5
RATING: 7.5/10 HIGHLIGHT: We Are Family LOWLIGHT: One More Time
Perfectly fine.
If I have to listen to 'we are family' one more time, I'm gonna shoot myself in the head. the other songs were fun though.
Not a huge fan of the remixes, would rate a 3.5 if I could but the album without the remixes is too short.
J'ai été transporté par cet album mais le voyage a été trop court malheureusement, j'aurais aimé plus de titre et plus varié aussi peut être.
niet perse slecht maar gewoon absoluut niet mijn muziek
존재 자체가 좋음
Never actually listened to this. Don’t really know what I’m in for… Disco. Groovie. Yeah. A whole album is tedious. 3 Boolean: True, but not one more time
Not the biggest disco fan but this record is pretty good.
the jams are jammin', but the slower tracks definitely dragged a little.
A solid album with a groove that I enjoy. Did not blow me away but never bored me either. If I am in the mood, I may go to a 4/5, but in general it is a 3/5 for me. Nothing to complain about here!
Bon mais pas extraordinaire
Solid disco with great harmony.
Peaked with the first song imo, but the rest was still pretty decent, also has an iconic title track. Highlights-He's The Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, and One More Time.
Really good music and singing, but not a fan of 5 minutes of the same thing on each track lol
Very talented. Just not my cup of tea. Actually tea is not cup of tea either. But, I digress.
Die Balladen waren mir zu Schmalz, den Rest mochte ich.
Couple of disco centric bangers on this one and the rest of the album also pretty good. Overall an easy album to listen to but doubt I’ll ever get back to it.
While this was a very popular album, Disco is not my thing. We Are Family is my least favorite song on the album. I am more favorable to those songs that lean toward funk.
2026.06.19.
We truly are a family.
It was the very definition of middle-of-the road for me. 2.5 rounded up because I'm not a total bastard.
Smooth but effervescent, peach and tobacco notes, looks like a model 'cept she's got a little more ass.
Several good tracks, but I got a little tired of the style as the album progressed.
A mixed bag. Some of the more energetic tracks are really fun. “Thinking Of You” is a pop classic and the opener is pure disco. The title track is cheesy and far too long; the second half of the track is completely redundant and annoying repetitive. The slower ballads are pretty poor and offer nothing except a change of pace. It’s good, but not great. I would listen to the is more than most of the rubbish on this list, but it’s an album of peaks and valleys.
We are Family is on it would you believe. I like that song, the others aren't really my jam that much.
This is very obviously the handiwork of Nile Rodgers which means it's pretty good. Songs you know, songs you recognise from samples. Excellent stuff.
Classic. Pretty coo.
Kind of boring. Not my vibe.
I'm a huge Nile Rodgers fan. His influence in pop, dance and eventually electronic music is amazing, not to mention Chic's guitar rifs as a base for so many hip-hop samples. Lucky for us, at the height of their creative peak they recorded this album with Sister Sledge where half of the songs are as good and sometimes better than Chic's best songs. We Are Family is just as big as Le Freak and Good Times. Lost in Music is an great great deepish track. There's mostly cringe fame for Greatest Dancer because of Will Smith, but the song is great, one of Chic's best And where do I start with Thinkin of You, one of my favorite songs ever. The groove on this song is, the guitar riff is great, the bass line is unique and sticks with you forever. Shame that the rest of the album suffers the same as other Chic albums, half amazing, half forgetable. I don't know how to rate this album, is it the listenability? Ho consise or essential of an album listening experience it is? There's so much music that it's enjoyed as a set of songs from different artists that flow better than the album it came from, assuming it's ever on an album. If it were on the strength of it's top songs, i'd rate it 5 stars, but it's not so I won't.
🙂
I guess I never realized that the album version of We Are Family was 8 minutes long.
After the last 3 days of albums this was a breath of fresh air. I think the nostalgia of growing up listening to my dad's band play "We Are Family" and loving "Getting Jiggy With It" made me like this album a bit more than I would otherwise.
3 - This is good, just not really something I get Jiggy With.
Great album that influenced and was sampled by lots of the rap first generation. The importance of this album that mixes funk with disco in a pop soulish vibe is undeniable
Funky 70s soul. I can dig it! 3 We Are Family is the song though! 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates. I wasn't even alive in 1979 & I know that song & that team are forever intertwined.
Getting Jiggy with it.
Maybe innovative and certainly not bad to listen to, but not my thing.
wanted to like this more than i did :( perfectly Fine disco album
The title track was a huge part of the soundtrack to my summer of 1979. It was literally EVERYWHERE. That said, I have no idea why this album is on this list. It is pleasant, competent post-disco, elevated somewhat above its contemporary competitors by the presence of Chic’s Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards as producers and composers. Their obvious fingerprints are easily noted throughout this album. So these nice young women had their 15 minutes of fame, and then gradually faded back into relative obscurity in the 80s. Sad note: they seem to have expended a more than a modicum of effort in the 2010s/2020s suing and countersuing each other over rights to the Sister Sledge name/copyright. We are family, indeed.
Ken ik echt totaal niet. Maar als de titel van het nummer is dat ik denk dat het is wordt het disco bonanza. Lost in music: Vet, voelt wat zwaarder dan de meeste disco Thinking of you: He deze ken ik van een setje van laatst. Job Jobse ofzo?
Well sung and well produced. I'm not the biggest fan of this genre - it honestly sounds too slick but I can appreciate the craft that went into this.
Fun one time listen
Cheesy as hell but it’s actually pretty decent. Never listening to it again though.
Been humming all day...
I really like the sound of "He's the Greatest Dancer," and I could not have said it was Sister Sledge. Of course, the title track is classic disco.
I'm not the biggest fan of disco and I wasn't expecting great things from this. However, while I wouldn't necessarily put this on again I did enjoy it and in part that was because it's female vocal rather then male. Not sure why that makes a difference but it does, so go figure
Classic disco record, but not one of my all-time favorites or anything. Everyone knows the title track.
Repetitive, as disco tends to be, but some slower pieces too.
The title song was heard EVERYWHERE when it came out. I mean EVERYWHERE!! Nile’s and Bernard knew how to bring out the best in everyone. Fun album. Not sure why it was deemed worthy to be on this list, however.
Nice funky album, great for a dance floor. Nile Rodgers knows how to create a great funky groove
The album is more than just its title track. It's good mixture of disco and R&B, and the bass lines are amazing.
First listen
Tuesday, 19 May, 2026 Amazing voices. Nile’s Rogers’ production and direction of Chic as backing band is great. That Philly Sound!
Getting jiggy with it
Maybe my first full-length disco record I've ever listened to? I can respect the arrangements here and I imagine a lot of the repetitive dancier songs would be perfect for clubs and dancefloors but this isn't a highly enjoyable album experience. "Somebody Loves Me" is pretty though.
The first thing you think of hearing the beginning of this record is "damn, this sounds like Chic". That's because Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote all the songs and produce and perform on it. Disco with strings and silky vocals, it's a product of its time, a snapshot of the late 70s. Irresistible boogie bait with Sledge sisters singing. "Thinking of You" and the title track stand out with slinky funky bass performances and groovy arrangements.
Not a particularly cohesive album, but some great tracks.
Really good songs, disco vibes, liked
Really great disco album, wouldn't return so I'm giving it a 3
I had a summer retail job where music came from a small colletion of CDs. Some shifts I'd hear We Are Family 2-3 times. Favorite songs: Easier to Love, Thinking of You
Disco with nile rogers He's the greatest dancer We are family
Takes me to the disco days, dancing to a lot of this music on the dancefloor. Enjoyed this album overall, although it's not my go to genre.
Ранний R'n'B. Прародитель всяких TLC и пр. Вполне неплох. Слушать дальше я его конечно же не буду.
This is the album that got me stuck on this project for like a year. Moving on.
#937. Ah shit, another disco album this week? I thought the party was over, I was about to put the cocaine away, but don't worry, I'll put it back out, we're not going home just yet. 3/5: fun
Can't fault it if disco and We are Family is your thing.
Lost In Music ❤️
Not usually a fan of disco but this was surprisingly fun
I noticed that this one also has Nile Rodgers credited on it. I think that's funny because the guitar is like the least interesting thing about this album. I liked the vocals, I liked the basslines, I liked the grooves made by the drummer, there might've been a song in here that didn't have guitar. I wouldn't know. It was fine. I didn't actively dislike it. But I also heard it while playing video games with my friend Molly. So it was the soundtrack to a pleasant time. Molly is bad at Slay the Spire 2.
i liked it but i felt like there was so much repetition. that’s to be expected with disco but it’s hard when you’re just sitting around listening to it like i was, versus it playing while you are dancing, which is what a lot of this is intended for. but yeah i think disco does lose some of its shine when you’re listening to it the way i was versus at a disco/club/party. some good songs but then there were some songs i just got bored with. he’s the greatest dancer, lost in music, and we are family were the standouts for me. 3.5/5
I found this mostly fine but a little to dancey and superficial for my preference. The music was pretty good, especially when it hit its grooves. The vocals were solid too, if repetitive. As a whole, though, it just didn't really seem all that interesting to me. There were a few good songs that I enjoyed. The rest were forgettable. I'll also note that this is a Sister Sledge album, but it's really just them signing songs made for them to sing. The majority of the album is written, performed, and produced by others. That probably plays into the inauthenticity I felt from it. Also, that it's disco. While the album isn't bad, it's not much more than fine for me. I don't really see what makes it an essential listen. Overall: 2.6/5
70's Disco Soul. Not my favorite kind of soul, but it isn't a bad listen. I can groove to it.
I don’t think this whole album needs to be on the list. It has the one famous song and another song that was sampled by Will Smith in the late 90s. The rest is just really long disco.
A rollercoast of an album. I instantly connected with some of the tracks, although the slower songs did not impact me as much. Overall, it’s a very chill and enjoyable album with engaging grooves and interesting instrumentals throughout. ++ : He's the Greatest Dancer Lost in Music We Are Family One More Time
This is some high-quality R&B focus disco. The songs are great, production is good, and the vibes are positive.
Hmm disco. Not sure. Let’s see. Saw them live once and it was fun. First half I was thinking four, second half three. It's a real 3 and a half but I'm going to have to go 3/5.
It’s like Nile was looking around at disco and nascent hiphop DJs and knew he just had to write something perfect for sampling. The songs here aren’t all that compelling lyrically, but the music and vocal affect by the Sledge sisters makes up for that shortcoming. Is it the same basic song every time? More or less, but that’s fine, it’s a good song!
Probably a 4 on a relisten
Solid R&B. Title track is the stand out known all over the world.
Great singing; We Are Family was the standout.
Very fun. The album cover is gorgeous and We are family is a great song. It's just a bit slow sometimes (the more romantic ones got boring for me)
Hum
Very listenable & largely enjoyable. Each song was probably about 1/3 longer than it needed to be though, and the songs are all a little bit samey!
Standouts Lost in Music We Are Family
We Are Family is Sister Sledge's third album, and the most successful work of their career. For this album, they collaborated with Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards from the band Chic, making songs that sound very much like the disco that Chic produced. The album includes a few disco classics, "We Are Family" and "He's the Greatest Dancer." "We Are Family" became the group's defining song, as well as one of the most recognized songs from the disco era.
fun disco groove! but not my fave
Pretty darn catchy, but I don't feel like dancing.
Very nice rhythm section, I understand why it got heavily sampled! Didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Was jamming in the record shop and sold a copy. Gotta revisit this one not usually what I listen to, but it was good!
I don’t hate disco. I find it pleasant to listen to and dance to, but it doesn’t exactly leave much of an impression on me. I respect the emotion, sense of fun, and technical skill in the album, but it just doesn’t sink it’s hooks into me in the way other albums do.
No conozco a la banda. Parece que es tipo música disco. we are family es un temón. Después todo muy agradable al oído, buen genero. No suelo escucharlo, pero me gusta. 7/10
3.5 would listen to this live
Consanguineous
Mostly enjoyable. A strong 3
Nile Rodgers.
The hit plus a few other great moments. How to rate that? 3.5
Sweet disco album. I like the more upbeat numbers better. 3.5
460/1089 - I liked the Chic album more but this is still alright.
Love the repetition!
Disco at it's most catchy, some smash hits and some nice vocals. Smooth bass, and silky vocals. Some clever lyrics pre-hip hop that may have had some influence on things to come in the years to come.
Never heard of it, but you can hear the Nile Rogers vibes throughout. Cool R&B/soul album. It’s fine. Let it have three stars.
Easy to listen to. Had no idea these guys are responsible for "We are Family." I enjoyed most of the album, but when that song came on I felt like I was being forced to dance at a wedding and didn't care for it.
This is some smooth '70s disco. It's not my thing, and "We are Family" has been pummeled into oblivion by decades of overplaying, but this is a fun glimpse into the coked-up Studio 54 era that sounded like it was a good time all around. 3.5.
“We Are Family” has been ruined by hundreds of advertisements and workplace radio rotations. The rest of the album, while not bad, isn’t something I’m racing to listen to again. Some good funk grooves and soul though. It grew on me a bit while listening, probably closer to a 4? They’re from Philly :)
Solid listen. I enjoyed the album.
A delight, if also a bit monotone.
Muy buen disco😉😉😉
decently enjoyable. not my normal music but fine
fun,dancy but a bit annoying
An alright album nothing too crazy to me
Better than I thought it would be. First song is quite funky.
Good disco! 3/5 Favorites: Thinking of You, Easier to Love, He’s the Greatest Dancer Should this be on this list: Yes!
solid
Good album. It was tons more fun than Band on the Run. Worth a listen.
70
Groovy and funky. Felt like a trip to the 70s.
Nothing to write home about outside of We Are Family. Mediocre disco sounding band that can be passed up. Would be a 1 if it were not for We Are Family which is a keeper.
Good beats and funky sound
Some real disco classics, but funk loses something for me with the four-on-the-floor, so doesn't quite have the longevity of the best in that genre.
It was some fun disco tunes. Had Jacob dancing around the living room. It was fun, but didn’t make me want to come back for more.
There are some great songs, but as the album played on, some songs felt repetitive. Overall, decent album with filler.
Rounding up from 2.5
