Reviews (page 5 of 13)
Brings back sweet memories for me. Never been a fan of disco but Bernard Edward’s bass playing is sublime. Definitely a worthy 4 if just for the bass.
I've heard some songs from this and they're fine I guess. Though I have to admit I've never paid too much attention to them. Late 1970's seem to be a good period for interesting music, so I'm quite curious to find out what this is. Don't know what to expect, but the Wikipedia article paints a flattering picture. He's The Greatest Dancer Pretty famous song. Still gets some spotlight to this day. Sampled in an even more famous song (Gettin' Jiggy With It), which is perhaps where most people would recognize the instrumental from. Classic disco track. I've got a soft spot for those backing vocals. That guitar riff is iconic. Really fun and danceable. Great. 4.5/5 Lost In The Music Great simple bassline. Sets the mood perfectly. Carefree and cute. Catchy and inoffensive. Pretty solid vocal performance. It does a lot of work to keep the track dynamic and varied despite the repetitive concept. Decent. 3.5/5 Somebody Loves Me Bog standard rnb track. Has very glitzy and overexaggerated production. While a bit dated, and perhaps even cheesy, it works pretty well with the singer's voice. Don't mind the backing vocals. Dull lyrics. Fine. 3/5 Thinking Of You Great opening guitar. Pairs well with the percussive elements. Solid string break. The chorus is pretty strong on this one, has an infectious nature with its simple and singable melody. Impressive vocal performance. Good. 4/5 We Are Family Another ubiquitous song of the genre. Feels like a bit of a cornerstone of dance music. Inescapable and catchy. Great bassline. Wholesome and positive with a lot of charm. A bit meaningless, but has good energy and a cute message. Good. 4/5 Easier to Love Interesting instrumental. Really like the subtle chaos in there. The flute is a very pleasant addition. Lovely vocals. Has a very pretty atmosphere to it. Good. 4/5 You're A Friend To Me Decent strings, solid bass. Really cheesy. The slow tempo kinda kills any momemtum it would've had. Inoffensive to the point of being boring. The alright vocals don't really save it. Average. 2.5/5 One More Time Groovy instrumental. Interesting guitar solo. Danceable chorus. A bit basic, but gets the job done. Fine. 3/5 Find some fresh, funky folks and boogie on down to these groovy disco tunes. Featuring masterful guitar riffs, bouncy basslines and a whole sea of catchy hooks. You'll never be bored when this album leads the line to a good ol' time. It's mostly just that: dumb, condensed fun, made to spread cheer and joy. And that's also where it finds its success. You won't find much meaningful or emotionally resonant content here, but that is not the point. The point is to get lost in a groove. To find beauty in a great vocal performance. And to relish the soul and spirit that it took to create something so joyous and positive. Is it the greatest thing ever? No, but it sure is accesible and easy to put on no matter what you're going to be doing. 3.5/5 rounded up to a 4/5.
Geeeez. How are the so many bangers on one album?! Nile Rogers is a genius and this album a huge testament to that. Very impressed. Less well known songs, didn’t hit as hard, but to have half the album and bona fide classics is some achievement and the others do bring a nice change of pace.
An astonishing collection of timeless pop songs. There’s a sort of paradox going on here: while it’d be wonderful to be hearing the songs on this record for the first time as a whole right now … it’d be a shame to have never before heard them (and “used” them – a song like “We Are Family” works as hard semiotically as it does sonically; it is essential cultural shorthand). Fabulous, and an immediate hit in my family too.
This is a really great album. Not actually really my type of music but it's so clean and really good and cohesive. 4*
8.5 /10 - A Classic & genre-defining album
short zero skips better as samples tho
A very familiar album of tuuuunes! Fun to have the remixes too but maybe needed to listen on shuffle so they weren't so repetitive
Great album. Vocals are crazy tight and the beat is funky. It doesn't really transcend the genre but a hell of a soul record.
Ken 'm. Heb 'm. Fantastische Chic-productie en de beste Sister Sledge-plaat.
Makes me want to get up and dance. A good example of what a great producer Niles Rodgers is. And even though I've heard "We Are Family" a million times, it is still a banger. Favorites: He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family Would I listen to it again: Yes
In dem genre bin ich nicht so sehr zu Hause, es dürfte aber sicherlich eins der prägenden Alben der Disco-Bewegung sein. Jede Menge Hits, gefällt, wenn auch manchmal etwas glatt. 4/5
What a great album! I grew up in the disco sucks era and basically swallowed that dumb sentiment without question. I eventually gave my sad little head a wobble and now have paved a rhinestone highway through my heart. On that highway runs.....disco. There is a lot of vapid and derivative shit out there (as with any genre), but this is not that. Sister Sledge is in fact an apex offering for the era. There are some obvious bangers on here that will live for ever. No need to talk about those. A nice surprise for me though was the slower, "Easier to Love". I have repeated this one about a dozen times since yesterday. This track is gold and I am really looking forward to to throwing it into my sampler to see what I can cook up with those flutes, smooth vocals, and that unique marching/staccato/sidechain compression vibe (hate on that if you must).
Have heard We Are Family so often I assumed I knew this group. One of the first times I was really glad to listen with headphones, very intricate songs. Songs: He's the Greatest Dancer, We are Family
Really enjoyed this album. Most tracks had a great funk to them. He's the greatest dancer and we are family are my favourite tracks.
Classic Disco album with soulful vocals. These songs are pretty much timeless. The album gets a bit weaker over the second half but overall still very good.
Could hear Nile Rodgers within 3 seconds of the album opening and I'm a sucker for it. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.
Nile Rodgers (Himself) said that "pound for pound, I think We Are Family is our best album hands down". And you would be a fool to argue otherwise. Four hit songs came from this, and though they came from the late 70s disco era, they still have the power to make you get up and move. Excellent all the way through, with the following proviso: (There are extra mixes of We are Family and Lost in Music (two each) on the version on Spotify, the 1995 remaster, which detract a little from the experience for me, so it's going to have to be a 4.)
The first track and the title track are classics 4/5
Eigentlech no zemlech cool, jedoch ned Grad 5-Stärne-Cool
Funky stuff. Still sound fresh! Some definite highs, others not quite so, but all in all a record to keep in mind for all time!
The musice We Are Family is good :)
Finally some good music after days of draught. More funky disco music pls!
Solid album I have to say. Several songs are well known all around.
bop
Favorite Songs: Lost in Music / We Are Family
Ah , a bit of disco courtesy of Niles Rodgers. Some cracking tunes , heavily sampled over the years. We are Family has been spoiled by adverts unfortunately. Great
A lot of fun. I bet this was a total blast to dance to when it came out.
J - 4/5 Best Track - "We Are Family" F - 5/5 Best Track - "We Are Family"
This is a great album, stated the challenge with a fantastic seventies classic, I really am surprised I don't already own this but I will soon now, such an easy album to listen to from start to finish
First rate soul and disco.
As soon as i put this on and heard the first few notes of "He's the Greatest Dancer" I thought 5. That distinctive Chic style twin rhythm guitar and bass. What an opener. I think having this album pop up on a Friday did it a big favour. I'm an aging rocker but never been one to shy away from a dancefloor. With headphones on it was difficult to keep still. It's amazing to think all of the Sister Sledge bangers are on the one album. A couple of the slower tracks brought it down to earth a little bit, but it's still a brilliant disco album.
Pure disco classics
Did Sister Sledge ever bother releasing a “best of” compilation or did they realise people could just buy this?
Extremely funky
Funktastic
Funky fun
Nile Rodgers' production & writing discography is more extensive and impressive than most people realize. IMO he is to credit for the nu-disco revival due to his work with Daft Punk on Random Access Memories. But I digress, this album itself is quite jiggy.
At least 3 disco bangers, but really works as a whole album - stick it on at a party in the past 46 years and you’ll have a good time.
💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 What a party!!
Gf
Funky
First Album I got that I actually knew beforehand! My favorite track is He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family is my least favorite, but only because it's so overplayed. I don't care for the remixes much either, but other than that this album is great!
Sehr angenehme, ruhige RnB Musik. 4/5
Really enjoyed this one, even though I generally dislike disco. There's enough funk, soul, and R&B mixed in to keep me from turning against it, and the vocals are terrific.
Good old soul!
1. He´s the greatest dancer / 10 All time great! Funky! Great base. 2. Lost in music / 8 Funky, but too repetitive. Great base again. 3. Somebody loves me / 9 Beatifull ballad, nice n' slow. Vocals on point. Strings are nice. Nice use of background vocals. 4. Thinking of you / 10 So funky again. Love it. Might be the best on the album. Base is so so good. No definitely the best song on the album. 5. We are family / 9 Classic, little overplayed. 6. Easier to love / 8,5 Real mellow. easy to love and easy to hear. guitarwork is nice 7. You're a friend to me / 5 This would be a skip for me. It's missing the sauce/flow. Feels like the song is hiccing up 8. One more time / 6 Another skip. repetitive. piano sounds anoying. guitarwork is kinda nice. nothing special
Your reaction to this album will likely be along the lines of your reaction to the viral "Gen Z boss and a mini" video. If you enjoy the idea of people dancing, cutting up, having a good time, and celebrating themselves -- you've got a quality collection of tunes here. However, if the thought of those ladies sends you into paroxysms of incel-laced rage, then you're best not to push play here. Instead, go touch grass and get yourself some therapy before you hurt someone for real.
pedrada master disco é bão demais pqp
disco é delicinha d+ nao tem jeito!
I'm a closet disco fan. He's the Greatest Dancer was one of the big songs off this album. It's good. Listening to this you realize that disco is like the flamboyant cousin of funk. Some disco any way. Somebody Loves Me is the album playing in the background of a love scene in a bad blaxploitation film. Thinking of You is a good song, better than the hits on the album, a little repetitive maybe. We Are Family! 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates fans go nuts! It's a good song though. This album was better than I thought it would be. One More Time is good too. I definitely like the album cuts better than the singles.
A vibe
Just very pleasant and enjoyable.
I can understand why people love them
Boogie jazz baby
It's so funny I legit just last week had rented from the library the Chic collection which included this cd and I declined to burn it....like an idiot. Nile Rodgers is a genius. The ladies of Sister Sledge can really sing and I hope you can dance.... (Also I LOVE the extended cut of "We Are Family" it's so good, a lot of the improvisation is incredible)
Way better than it had any right to be. I really, really don't like the title track due to how overplayed and cheezy and just repetitive it is, but the rest of this album is really good! Best Song: He's the Greatest Dancer Rating: 7/10 (Solid) Stars: 4/5
Groovy baby, groovy!
Not very into disco or upbeat music in general but already had some favorite songs out of this album before I listened to it in its entirety. He's the Greatest Dancer is definitely the highlight of this album. Lost in Music is another great one. Giving it a 4 because as I said upbeat music is not exactly my jam. On a side note, absolutely mind blowing coincidence that when I learnt about this site and created a project, He's the Greatest Dancer was playing in my mind and the first album that came up was We are Family.
Of course the title track was a huge success, but the rest of the album is actually very good, very funky and entertaining.
Classic
Pretty legendary dance record. Sampled across so many songs. Classics throughout.
This album is full of a positivity that beings me up. The lyrics upon my first listen don't seem deep but I don't think they need to be as the purpose is to uplift.
Super fun and groovy album. I especially liked the guitar parts. Favorite Song: "Lost in Music"
Great funk, lots of good music, way better than the song they are known for -He's The Greatest Dancer (sampled in Gettin' Jiggy Wit It) -Lost in Music -Thinking of You -You're a Friend
Hørt noe før, nice å digge musikken mens man progger:) Kom i bedre humør. Ikke helt det jeg hører på til vanlig.
Oh damn these ladies are super famous. A lot of these tracks are used as samples. Some really good disco.
Great album with some classic hits!
Groovy, classic We are Family song. Good disco music
Favorite Track: He's The Greatest Dancer
It was a fun album, added a few songs to my summer skate album
Funky goodness! Completely under appreciated the other songs on this album.
Rich, luscious, and sensual vocal and instrumental mix. Incredible use of vocal harmonies, wonderful tight and squeaky clean grooves. Just reminds me that disco was never bad, it was just a cheesy blip on our cultural radar. This album is a stand out combo of upbeat dance tracks, empowering and unifying songs, and heart wrenching ballads. Sister sledge is a standout act for sure and this album is great, but We Are Family is all anyone ever knows about it so its not a tastemakers choice. For that seek Chic.
Can't believe I'd never heard the rest of this before album before. Hearing a big influence on particularly 2010s funk guitar, think Cory Wong or RAM. Thinking Of You is good as FUCK. The flute sample in Easier to Love is killer.
I was Lost in Music while listening to this. This album is Easier to Love.
So disco. But so often used for sampling, it's worth an extra star
This was a pleasant surprise. While this wasn’t something I’d say is worth giving a 5 to. I still find myself feeling positive about this all around. I’d be into seeing more disco on this list, and less white men with a guitar.
The Good: We’re keeping it in the family! The Bad: Shouldn’t it be Sisters Sledge? The Ugly: Well… it’s disco music! Holy shit! Though I dreaded having to listen to it, as the wikipage reminded me that this is just a clone of Chic, I was really happy with the experience as these ladies do a much better job than Chic ever did—this is my opinion, for what it's worth. Album just flew by, not really a single song that I did not like… and boy oh boy the amount of hits is impressive. So, here’s to the sisters and their short-lived success 4 1/2*
I love the disco era. A lot of great R&B / Soul music from this timeframe that I think is slept on, because of the bad rap disco gets.
I’m going 4.4 on this one! Solid ass album.
HES THE GREATEST DANCER, WE ARE FAMILY, WE'RE LOST IN MUSIC, ICONIC LOVED ALL OF IT STRAIGHT UP VIBES
Solid disco!
I don’t like R&B but I liked this
Disco really isn't my thing, and a lot of these tracks are overplayed, but it's impossible to deny the quality here so have to give it a 4
Some absolute monsters on this 🕺🏻 🪩
Pure feel good even with the heartbreaker “Somebody Loves Me” Torn between 4 and 5 here
Solid party album. A little slow at parts but still fun
Starting off with a band I was already familiar with, not my usual genre but a great listen anyway. Really enjoyed "Somebody Loves Me", I hadn't heard that one before but it was really beautiful! Kathy did an incredible job but all the sisters have such impressive voices. Not five stars because some songs do get very repetitive but still a good album.
Some of the greatest pop. Thinking of you is an absolute classic. But my oh my those boys couldn't write lyrics could they?
# Album Name: We are family # Artist: Sister Sledge # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Some great tunes on this album. Half of the tracks are absolute gems. The slower tracks are pretty standard fillers and bring the level down. Overall a good album. I enjoyed it. # Top Tunes: Greatest dancer / lost in music / thinking of you / we are family # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Didn’t love the slower songs but the upbeat ones were so fun yay disco!
I forget about Sister Sledge until something drags them back into headphones once every few years. 100 percent a vibe.
The best Chic album that Chic did not made, or had their name on the sleeve. One thing that made me put it as a 4 star instead of 5 was the running time and Somebody Loves Me, but its a great album nonetheless.
kathy, debbie, joni, kim. a long time ago the 4 sledges lived in harmony. then, the kim nation attacked.
We Are Family by Sister Sledge is a huge vibe from start to finish. This album is packed with infectious disco grooves and feel-good energy that can instantly lift your spirits, but it’s not without its flaws. First off, the production is spot on – crisp, vibrant, and infectious. Every beat is laid down with precision, creating a rhythmic pulse that makes you want to get up and dance. The instrumentation is top-notch, with funky basslines, shimmering keyboards, and tight percussion that work together to capture the true essence of the disco era. The vocals are another highlight. The harmonies are lush and add a rich, soulful layer to the tracks, giving them an irresistible, celebratory feel. Songs like the title track “We Are Family” really nail that sense of unity and joy, making it clear why this album became such a classic. There’s a raw, infectious positivity that runs through the entire record, making it an easy listen when you’re in the mood for something uplifting. That said, not every track hits the same high note. While the vibe is undeniably huge, some songs come off a bit formulaic and, frankly, a tad dated. The album occasionally lacks variety, and a few tracks don’t quite stand out—they simply blend into the background compared to the standout moments. It feels like there could have been a bit more innovation to break up the disco monotony, leaving me wishing for a few more surprises along the way. In my perspective, We Are Family is a well-loved classic that delivers an undeniable, feel-good vibe throughout. The album’s infectious grooves, stellar harmonies, and energetic production create an atmosphere that's both nostalgic and uplifting. Even though some tracks feel a bit predictable and dated, the overall experience is still a joy to listen to. It’s a record that brings people together and makes you want to dance, even on your dreariest days. For me, it's a solid 3.9/5 stars—a timeless slice of disco that’s worth a proper spin when you need a burst of positivity.
vibes+, but too short
8/10 Great to hear very solid and consistent Disco music considering its legacy has been buried by the discourse regarding its controversy. It’s slick, its elegant, groovy, soulful, everything from the grand instrumental performances and the Sister’s wonderful voices make it just a really fun listen. Shoutout women without Wikipedia pages, we still love you
Groovy. Listened to it 3 times, enjoyed it greatly. Strong 8.
funky, gold, classy
Ah DISCO! We are famil, isch leider verbrucht. Lost in Music - ich liebs. Hinenuse isch eher nichts-sagend. Drum häts wahrschindli die ville Remixes😂 ( wo aber na überraschend underschiedlich sind).

Never would have known it from the name, but I recognized several of these. Some good songs here, I like this one.
Some great grooves as evidenced by the constant sampling, and good voices as well.
Favourite track: Lost In Music
This is solid all the way through, which surprised me for a "disco" album. Many bangers on this one. Four stars!
Bring back disco for the bass players
YESSS I just listened to this full album for the first time last week, and have had Thinking of You on repeat for a good month or so now. Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards are such a good combo i never get tired of. Love almost every song here. 4 stars
yayyy disco
This slapped what else is there to say Rating: 4.0
Groovy classic. Holds up great in my opinion. Why did they steal all those daft punk samples tho? 🤔
impossible not to move 🪩🕺weee🕺aaare🪩 faaaa🕺🪩miiiilyy🕺🪩
One of the greatest disco voices of the 70’s. Tracks 9-12 great for exercising.
Fun disco sound. Grandma Mary would like.
Cute!!! Long live disco!
Disco! Big hits on this one: “He’s the Greatest Dancer” and, of course, the ubiquitous “We Are Family.” You can’t go wrong with Nile Rodgers/Chic production. Nile Rodgers’ clean, plinky guitar is a great complement to the dance floor beats. I’m not as taken with the slower songs but it’s still a solid, enjoyable album.
solid and enjoyable disco music, well crafted and pretty gorgeous. 3.5 or 7/10
Funk yes
Black is good
A good mix between dancefloor fillers and album fillers.
fun and danceable
An album that it would never occur to me to listen to, but it’s so perfectly of its time and so perfectly itself. I can’t remember this ever not being part of the soundtrack of growing up.
nice and funky, gotta love it
I grew up despising disco - but let's face it, this album really grooves. Impeccable vocals and overall musicianship, plus solid production really lifts this album above others. Really surprised myself I got into this album so much.
4.5 stars! JUST GOOD STUFF!
Good, representative disco album. Love the title track, justifiable classic. Ultimately not my preferred style for repeated listening.
Este si me gusta.
One good song.
A Chic record in disguise, the title track really doesn’t prepare you for what this record actually is: soft disco, slow dance music, and sample/break fodder. Is it bad? No! It’s very good, because Chic is a great band, even as a backing band, and Sister Sledge are a great vocal group. But its peaks are the side openers, with great side closers plus the pretty good, oft-sampled “Easier to Love.” The remaining three tracks are decent, although they’re all ballads with much lower energy than anyone normally wants out of their disco, including me. Mathematically, when there’s 8 tracks total and you have 5 great songs and 3 decent ones, that’s still a damn high hit rate, especially if you just generally love disco like I do, so that’s still a good ROI. That said, while Sister Sledge are great, and We Are Family is great, and I would buy and vibe out to this record in a heartbeat, it’s far from representative of disco overall. It’s actually kind of niche, showcasing the quieter moments of the genre that remind you that this was courting music for Boomers, and like all falling-in-love music you only hear at places you go on a date– roller rinks, bowling alleys, discotheques, etc. – disco obviously had and needed these intimate moments. We Are Family is the best of that niche, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best overall. Still good, though!
4.0
Very fun but very beautiful sounding album. The sort of album I would think of when asked to think of disco as a general concept. Not that it's a bad thing; far from it. Some very endearing and earnest tracks as well as the fun, dancable tracks add for a nice balance of stuff. Combine that with the lead singers gorgeous voice and the catching and captivating instrumentals, it's a good album overall, even if disco really isn't my genre
Enjoyed the album. Some funky and soulful songs
funky grooves. i wasnt expecting to like this due to my familiarity with the title track but it wasn't as bad as expected
Post disco greatness.
Great album especially because the members of Chic are the backing musicians. A master class in disco/funk
Growing up in Pittsburgh in the 70s, We Are Family was ubiquitous. It was the theme song for the (then champion) Pirates and the chorus was played dozens of times a day on every tv and radio station during the spring and summer. Even though I don’t like baseball, and despite the awfulness of the Pirates now, that song is deeply seated in the nostalgia center of my brain. That aside, this album as a whole is pretty solid disco/soul/R&B. My disdain for all things disco must have softened over the decades, because I didn’t mind this too much. In fact, I kind of enjoyed it mostly.
DISCO 🪩💃
Saw this and was like 'oh no I'm really not a disco fan' - I still don't think I am but 3 songs from this album made it to my liked songs so ? I really detest the title track whoops it's soo overplayed He's the greatest dancer, thinking of you and easier to love are bangers (although the first goes on a little long) Struggling to rate this as the ones I didn't like were hard skips but the ones I liked I loved, overall probably wouldn't listen in full again. It's categorically a good album and opened my mind to a genre I thought wasn't for me - would be 3 but I'm kicking it up to 4
3.5 stars
Disco at its best. What a fantastic album.
One thing I've come to learn now 920+ albums deep is that this list doesn't have nearly enough disco as it should have. Less bullshit like Captain Beefheart and more this. 8/10
This is a special type of music, a mix of rock and latin, but I could be wrong. However songs are very pleasant to listen during an activity or just enjoy your Friday morning.
Lost in music remixes hit differently
Few good tunes, knew most of them
Shame about the slower numbers because the disco classic hits on this album are genuinely brilliant. Just put out an album of those! We don't need the slow numbers, just give me 9 floor filling bangers please. However those hits here are masterpieces.
Classic disco- good for a background party ambience
Like it
Why did the disco genre continue at all after this? This is the pinnacle. Everything after this stands in its shadow. Surely nothing could possibly be anywhere near as groovy as He’s the Greatest Dancer. As for the other tracks, there’s a surprising album-worthy flow even amongst titanic tracks Lost in Music and We Are Family, so you’re not stuck waiting for the next recognisable track (apart from track 3, the only real weak point here). So, your album cannot possibly be anything below ‘great’, if it has He’s the Greatest Dancer. It’s the greatest disco.
Not everything can be a single, easy to listen to overall though I wasn’t as huge a fan of slower tracks
Really liked - We are Family. Understand why this was a dance hit. Disco was where it was at.
This is fun! I wouldn’t say it’s perfect or anything like that, but it’s a solid enjoyable dance album.
First listen. Pretty good.
A good album, I liked Lost In Music, We Are Family and One More Time the most.
Any album with Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers is going to contain classics.
Yet one big name from American r'n'b/soul scene of yesteryear. Can't say I've delved into this groups discography, I just know several of the hit songs, probably from going through Motown/Stax stuff. However, just starting the album I realize how much this has been sampled and remixed. Also how huge influence the disco movement had to the sound of whole genres of music.
Nile Rodgers probably has the most out of whack ratio of "importance to music history" to "recognizability" of anyone. Everything about his musical style is instantly recognizable, even to the average person - whether it's Chic or Daft Punk or here with Sister Sledge - and yet most people couldn't name him if you showed them a photo, couldn't tell you his name if you played his songs. Truly incredible. The Sledge girls, pretty incredible too, by the by.
If you were born between 1975-1980, there’s a 50% chance you were conceived to this album
Disco is just very pleasant isn't it
I could have done without all the remixes at the end, but overall this album slaps
Disco fever!
finest disco sound ever
The vocals on this were decent, but I was more focused on how insanely good the bass and guitar work were. Some disco type music can be repetitive, soulless and over-produced but this had me hooked. I would be dancing to this after a few on a Friday night Title track was by far the best song on the album. Went slightly downhill after that but still a great album
Nule rodgers my goat
Great pop record
This album was a true surprise! This feels like a true farewell to disco music with songs like Lost in Music and He's the Greatest Dancer. Best Songs: He's the Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, We Are Family, One More Time, Worst Songs: Somebody Loves Me Worst Songs:
Good listen.
Great stuff, this album was like a greatest hits album, one classic disco track after another. I was supposed to see them live in July but the concert was postponed until next August so I look forward to that. Anyone that has ever been to a wedding or large birthday gathering will know these songs. Dancefloor fillers
Lovely way to start the day
This was an enjoyable / classic 70’s album
Very fun
Great album 4/5
I had the opposite reaction to this one that I did with Chic. No expectations and I loved it. The beats, the voices, the orchestration--the album nails everything I like about disco.
Inte min favoritgenre men tycker ändå detta är rätt bra. 3 av 8 låtar är riktiga klassiker och resten är stabila treor, så blir en svag fyra i betyg.
Solid disco entry. Chic does their thing here in one of the best sets and Sister Sledge compliments them well.
This album slaps. I had no idea Sister Sledge rocked like this. Fav Track: We Are Family (but Lost in Music is pretty tight)
Loved it
Staan wel wat classics op hoewel ik echt zelden disco luister lol, maar voor wat het is is het een goed album for sure
Disco är rätt bra pendlingsmusik!
Un xpectwd gem. Would listen more when in the mood for disco
Funky. 🤩 👯🎉
Wasnt sure what to expect from this but pleasantly surprised. Consistently good from start to finish Groovy
Fun memories…and even soothing at times. Feel good album.
Fun. Nostalgic. For that reason I give it a four.
Groovy
I forgot how much I loved the opening track ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’. Edwards addictive, melodic, fast paced guitar licks. Rodgers insane bass lines, and the insanely preppy strings adding so much gravitas to it. It’s quite frankly one of the greatest funk songs ever put to tape. Similarly, the same elements are all over the follow up track ‘Lost In Music’; as if it’s a wonderful companion, and both tracks just work so well together. ‘Thinking Of You’, the absolutely infamous title track ‘We Are Family’, and ‘One More Time’ are also all fantastic funk tracks on their own; and each of them could have been monster hits, as well. But let’s not forget that the faces and voices of this group are the women themselves. And while I feel the composition and production are the standouts in the more uptempo tracks. It’s the more mid-tempo and ballads where they shine the most. The smooth ‘Somebody Loves Me’, the beautiful ‘Easier To Love’, and the relaxing yet somber ‘You’re A Friend To Me’. Just gorgeous soul tracks worth listening to. The biggest, and probably most obvious, comparison I could make here is to some of Earth, Wind & Fire works. Fantastic funk with so many elements working together. Beautiful soul that you could relax to. And insanely influential R&B flavours that you can still hear in music today. I was just starting to think the generator has given me an unwanted break from funk/R&B - and I’m happy to finally receive another taste today. 4/5
disco funk brilliance from this philly sister group. Shoutout to the ever-groovy Nile Rodgers too. easier to love was my favourite song, great bop. Probably wouldn't have bothered with this album had it not been for this list!
This is a disco era recording that does not feel or sound like a disco era album. "We Are Family" is a terrific song and others like "Lost in Music" and "You're a Friend to Me" are great.
Nile Rogers' magic touch!
So smooth, soooo schöne Stimmen, die funky Gitarre ist Nile out of ten.
This is disco. The songs are so well written with incredibly danceable beats and great rhythm. This is an album that I will be blaring on my speakers while I clean the house. He's the Greatest Dancer is my favorite, special mention to Lost in Music and Thinking of You.
Start of the disco era Favorite track: we are family other picks: lost in music, he is the greatest dancer, thinking of you
From the first track, I asked "Am I into disco?" The funk and soul from the guitar to the vocals just bleeds style and texture. Great variety and lots of fun, though a couple of the slower songs just didn't do it for me as the more up beat ones.
It’s hard for me to take disco too seriously, but that’s ok. Not all music needs to be taken seriously. Sometimes you just need to turn your brain off and enjoy the groove. “He’s the greatest dancerrrrrr”🕺 4/5 Highlights: Thinking of You
### In-Depth Review of *We Are Family* by Sister Sledge Released in 1979, *We Are Family* by Sister Sledge is a seminal disco album that features the iconic production of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of the band Chic. The album not only encapsulates the energy and optimism of the disco era but also stands as a timeless piece of music history. With a mix of danceable grooves, infectious melodies, and uplifting lyrics, it reflects the spirit of its time while addressing universal themes. Here’s a detailed analysis of the album's lyrics, music, production, themes, and influence, along with its strengths and shortcomings. ### Lyrics The lyrical content of *We Are Family* is marked by themes of unity, celebration, and resilience. The most famous track, “We Are Family,” serves as an anthem of solidarity and empowerment, primarily aimed at fostering a sense of community and togetherness. The lyrics, “We are family / I got all my sisters with me,” promote a message of collective strength, both within Sister Sledge as a group and as a broader message to listeners. It's inclusive, direct, and radiates positivity. Tracks like “He’s the Greatest Dancer” and “Lost in Music” explore themes of escapism and admiration. “He’s the Greatest Dancer” praises the titular dancer's elegance and style while subtly commenting on how dancing is a form of self-expression and identity. On the other hand, “Lost in Music” delves into the allure of the nightlife, where music acts as an escape from the mundanities of daily life. However, some lyrics can come across as repetitive or simplistic. For example, "We Are Family" relies heavily on its titular refrain, which, while effective for a dance track, may feel limited in lyrical depth when compared to more narratively complex songs. Similarly, tracks like “Thinking of You” are straightforward love songs without much nuance, focusing on common themes of longing and affection without adding a fresh perspective. ### Music Musically, *We Are Family* is built on a foundation of disco’s characteristic grooves, with a strong emphasis on rhythm guitar, bass, and upbeat tempos. Chic members Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards bring their signature style to the album, infusing it with infectious guitar riffs and syncopated bass lines. The instrumental arrangement is meticulously crafted to keep the listener moving, with Rodgers’ guitar playing providing an almost percussive rhythm to tracks like “He’s the Greatest Dancer.” Edwards' bass playing is a highlight across the album, offering a punchy yet fluid groove that drives the songs forward. The bass line in “Lost in Music,” for instance, serves as the song's backbone, creating a mesmerizing flow that supports the dreamy vocals. The use of brass and string sections further enhances the disco aesthetic, adding a touch of grandeur to the songs. The vocal performances by the Sledge sisters—Debbie, Joni, Kim, and Kathy—are stellar, characterized by harmonious layering and dynamic energy. Kathy Sledge's lead vocals exude warmth and enthusiasm, especially on “We Are Family” and “He's the Greatest Dancer,” while the backing harmonies elevate the songs to a communal, celebratory level. The interplay between lead and background vocals gives the tracks a lively, interactive quality, making the album feel like a shared experience rather than a solo performance. ### Production The production on *We Are Family* is polished, clean, and reflective of Chic’s influence on the disco sound. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards’ approach to producing the album was to create a cohesive sound that balanced instrumentation and vocals, allowing each element to shine without overshadowing the others. This balance is evident in the mixing, where every instrument, from the bass to the rhythm guitar and horns, occupies a distinct space within the soundscape. The sound design, including the layering of percussion elements like hi-hats, congas, and handclaps, adds texture to the album and ensures that each track has a vibrant, full-bodied sound. The use of reverb and delay on the vocals enhances the album’s dance-floor appeal, making the music feel expansive and immersive. Nevertheless, some production choices could be seen as limiting the album's sonic variety. There is a certain uniformity in the sound across tracks, which, while creating a consistent listening experience, also risks making the album feel monotonous in spots. Additionally, the disco-centric production may not appeal to listeners who prefer a less polished or more raw sound. ### Themes Thematically, *We Are Family* centers around unity, celebration, and the escapism provided by music and dance. The title track encapsulates the album's overarching message of solidarity and kinship, aiming to bring people together regardless of background. It has since become an anthem for both personal empowerment and social movements, resonating with marginalized groups seeking acceptance and strength in numbers. Tracks like “Lost in Music” and “He’s the Greatest Dancer” tackle the idea of using music as a form of escape and self-expression. These songs celebrate the liberating power of the dance floor, where people can shed their inhibitions and find a sense of freedom. There’s also a subtle exploration of identity through the admiration of the dancer in “He’s the Greatest Dancer,” who is portrayed not just as a skilled performer but as someone who embodies style, grace, and charisma. Other songs, such as “Easier to Love” and “Thinking of You,” introduce themes of love and affection. These tracks provide a more intimate contrast to the dance floor-oriented numbers, though they don’t stray far from the central theme of joy and connection. ### Influence The influence of *We Are Family* extends well beyond the disco era. The album, especially the title track, became a symbol of empowerment for various social movements, including LGBTQ+ communities and feminist organizations. It was also adopted as a rallying cry for sports teams, making it one of the few disco songs to transcend genre boundaries and cultural barriers. Musically, the album's sound has influenced numerous artists across different genres. The interplay of rhythm guitar and bass by Rodgers and Edwards became a blueprint for dance music production, with elements of their style later appearing in genres such as funk, R&B, and even hip-hop. The approach to vocal harmonies on the album also had a lasting impact, inspiring the sound of later girl groups and pop acts. The album's tracks have been sampled and covered extensively, particularly in the realms of house and dance music, further cementing *We Are Family*'s legacy as a key influence on modern music. The use of “We Are Family” in movies, commercials, and events has kept the song relevant across decades, solidifying its status as a cultural touchstone. ### Pros of the Album 1. **Timeless Themes of Unity and Empowerment**: The themes of family, empowerment, and solidarity make the album universally appealing and relatable. 2. **Strong Musicality and Performances**: Rodgers and Edwards’ production, combined with the Sledge sisters' vocal performances, create a lively and polished sound that epitomizes the disco era. 3. **Cohesive Production**: The album maintains a consistent sonic palette, with tight instrumentation and layered arrangements that enhance the overall listening experience. 4. **Cultural Impact**: *We Are Family* has transcended its original context, becoming an anthem for social movements, sports teams, and celebrations. 5. **Dance Floor Appeal**: Every track on the album is crafted to keep people moving, making it an essential record for dance music enthusiasts. ### Cons of the Album 1. **Limited Lyrical Depth in Some Tracks**: While the themes are positive and uplifting, some lyrics can come across as overly simple or repetitive. 2. **Monotony in Sound**: The consistent disco production, while polished, could make the album feel monotonous to some listeners due to a lack of significant sonic variation. 3. **Era-Specific Style**: As a product of the late '70s disco era, the sound may not resonate with all modern listeners, especially those who are not fans of disco or dance music. 4. **Overexposure of Certain Tracks**: Songs like “We Are Family” have been so widely used in media and events that they may suffer from overfamiliarity, potentially diminishing their impact. ### Conclusion *We Are Family* by Sister Sledge is a defining album of the disco era, offering a blend of infectious grooves, uplifting themes, and masterful production. Its legacy endures not only because of its danceable quality but also due to its message of togetherness and resilience. The combination of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards' production skills with the Sledge sisters' powerful vocal performances results in a sound that is both polished and emotionally resonant. While the album's consistency is one of its strengths, it can also be seen as a drawback, as the uniformity in style may come across as monotonous for some listeners. Additionally, the lyrical content doesn’t always dive deep, and the disco-centric production may limit its appeal for those who prefer a more varied or raw sound. Nonetheless, the cultural and musical impact of *We Are Family* is undeniable. The album stands as a testament to the enduring power of disco, not just as a genre, but as a cultural movement that continues to inspire unity, celebration, and expression. With its pros outweighing the cons, *We Are Family* remains a vital listening experience for anyone interested in the history of dance music and pop culture.
I'm surprised I liked a disco album this much
awseome
What did I just listen to: a Chic album or Sister Sledge album?
Period sister!!!!
Good for background music. Some known tracks and tunes from remixed/sampled songs
Disco haters who think the bass gods are Lemmy K and Geddy Lee need to sit down and listen to Bernard Edwards--on second thought, get up and dance to Bernard and Nile lay down the groove. Sister Sledge brings it in their vocals, and this album is a sophisticated, groovy party. Slick funk.
Classic album.
lots of we are family’s for one album but otherwise great
Banger after banger - high energy positive vibes Not standard listening but great every once in a while. Once a month listening
What I would class as a classic disco album. Great vocals great production timeless classic songs.
Disco has many stinkers, few diamonds. This is absolutely the latter
I of course knew the singles on the album, but haven't listened to much else by this artist. I enjoyed the whole thing, only a couple tracks were a bit slow, but the rest was high energy and funky. Bass work was super groovy. Overall an enjoyable listen.
Tranquilo, pero animado, me pone de buen humor. Sería perfecto para poner de fondo para una cena o aperitivo. Mis favoritas: Thinking of you, You're a Friend to me.
i really like the album, most of these songs are classics
Everything good about disco music.
Good funky dance music.
There are certain things engrained in popular American culture that it hard to remember that there are so many different shades of grey in the world. one of these things is disco sucking. for some much time it seems that disco has been seen as universally terrible, corny, cheesy, cringe, or whatever negative synonym for a bad fad your generation prefers. see, to me i always liked disco before i was taught it was bad. i went through that phase in teenage years when it's far easier to be a hater and go along with the crowd than stand by something like enjoying disco. now that i've aged and learned more about the history of disco i can see the beauty and awesome nature of the genre. a group of persecuted people living in a horrific economic time and amidst the 60's hangover banding together and making a place of joy and happiness. to overcome the hurtles it can take to enjoy things when the world seems to be on fire. i see the similarities in modern times. politics and climate look bleak. heavy effort is needed to help shape the world, but you can't always be doing political work. some times you gotta enjoy life, and in the face of rising fascist tides, to stay alive and enjoy your time on earth is radical.
I loved hearing this album through. It really captured the Disco Era and hold up with its funky jams.
Classic disco/ dance tracks. We are family, lost in music , thinking of you. If you like disco then this is for you.
Really great album the harmony is so beautiful
4.1 - When its good its great, but there is some good old sandwich filler there
So many hits! Really surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Fave Tracks: He's The Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, Thinking of You 4.2/5
Going in, this felt like another album where the reason it made the list was because of its title track - a massive hit of its era that has persisted in the cultural consciousness to this day. But after listening I don’t think that’s true or fair to say. The group themselves is described as an R&B group on Wikipedia, but this album feels all disco. Makes sense given the era. I admit that I have always had a weird soft spot for disco, despite not knowing much about the genre as a whole. The orchestral element of it is what really gets me though. It’s just such a fun and bouncy sound, one that gets its depth from its funk-inspired grooves and those orchestral arrangements that just fill out the sound. Sister Sledge does all of this here in these songs. The grooves are fun, and the vocals are pristine. All in all, this is one of the better collection of disco tunes I’ve heard and I was pleasantly surprised by it all. Four stars. Standout Tracks: He’s the Greatest Dancer, Somebody Loves Me, We Are Family, Easier to Love, You’re a Friend to Me
Don't consider myself a disco fan but this absolutely rips. The chic sound is tight as ever, the musicianship on vocals is equally superb.
挺带感的
Better than I anticipated.
Very nice!
Fantastic. "We Are Family" is one of those songs that I sang along to as a kid practically before I even consciously thought about music. It's one of those classic songs. Listening to it today in the context of this album, I appreciated just how good it is. All the layers -- the slick guitar riff, the funky bass, the syncopated drum beat, the piano melody and strings -- combine beautifully into a groove I could listen to for an hour straight. The same goes for album opener "He's the Greatest Dancer." What an amazing funky riff! I know it from Will Smith's "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" -- I had no idea that riff was lifted entirely from this song. And the vocals are stunning throughout. Great, belting, soulful, show-stopping singing. I really enjoyed the album by Chic on this list and this album is just as fun, probably better overall. Niles Rodgers and Bernard Edwards are the masterminds behind both albums. They lock in together perfectly -- guitar and bass -- for some insanely catchy music. And the production is top notch all around.
Awesome funk soul album with plenty of style and flair. This album has amazing production, incredibly impressive vocal performances, and the band is so impressively tight (no surprise with Nile Rodgers involved). My mom likes Sister Sledge and it's funny because growing up I heard her talk about them before hearing their music and for a while I thought it was an 80's hair metal band- like a group of sledgehammer wielding, guitar shredding women. There's still some times where I hear this band or even just hear their name and I think back to being a little kid with a wild imagination. The one downside of this record for me is that it's a little short at around 43 minutes of music. It's remedied a bit by the remaster which gives us 4 additional versions of tracks that add around an extra 30 minutes of music. It's a 4.3/5 for me. Not enough for it to be a 5. "We Are Family" is an amazing song and will forever be played at family gatherings, weddings, really any joyous event that you can think of. If this record had another one that was high up like that then I would easily give it a 5.
BEST SONGS: - Lost in Music
84% Best: He's the Greatest Dancer; Thinking of You; We Are Family Must-Hear? Sure
This was a fun disco time! The song "We Are Family" brings back good memories for me because it was one of my grandmother's favorite songs, but the rest of the songs on this album were also just as fun!
Clean. 6/10
"We Are Family" is just one of those disco songs that everyone knows -- in fact, I would go as far as to say that it is one of THE most well-known and regarded disco songs of all time. And as good as that song is, Sister Sledge shows on this album that they are so much more than just that one song. The album is full of sweet, soulful vocals and harmonies and the funkiest disco beats. There are parallels that can be drawn between this album and CHIC's "C'est Chic", not the least of which is the fact that Nile Rodgers is at the helm of both albums. That album also contains one of the most well-known disco songs, and certainly CHIC's most famous song ("Le Freak"), but truly the entire album is elevated by Rodgers' work. So much like on "C'est Chic", his writing, production, and playing on this album takes things to the next level and really just further cements him as a disco god.
Some catchy songs, hence a good album.
No private spotify session used. I like funk and groove, so disco shouldn't be a stretch. I did like this album, put images of me in my head wearing a really tight shirt, unbuttoned to expose my gold chain medallion and pathetic excuse for chest hair. Then I think it's fortunate I was to young to go to disco clubs in the late 70's/early 80's.
Fun mix of 70's R&B and Disco. Vocals are fantastic, recommend listening with speakers that allow the bass to shine through. I enjoyed this album quite a bit, added most of the songs to my iTunes library. 3.5/5
Un rollo Funk que en un par de canciones es bastante chulo y tiene un ritmo que te lleva a bailar. En general no son malas canciones, pero quitando estas dos más destacables, el resto no me parece tan destacable.
Great disco.
Sister Sledge is, in fact, made up of "family". The group consists of four sisters. Immediately upon hearing the tune to the first song on the album, He's The Greatest Dancer, I heard Will Smith's song Gettin' Jiggy Wit It. Turns out Will sampled the song. We Are Family is an absolute disco staple! So iconic of the era. I learned that they worked with Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards from CHIC on the song. This album gets a 4 simply because of how important it was to the genre. Favourite songs: We Are Family, He's the Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music Least favourite songs: You're a Friend to Me 4/5
I really liked the album - so soft and gentle
Fun mix of R&B and soul
Some stone cold classics plus others you likely remember to bring you back to an era of pure fun and excitement.
overraskende mange berømte numre på, jeg havde aldrig hørt om dem før. Getting Jiggy Wit It sample alert Nile Rodgers er en virkelig god sangskriver
Basgangene i disco rammer bare anderledes! Jeg er ikke så vild med deres ballader.
Nice album, beautiful vocals. Maybe a bit repetitive at times but maybe that's part of the charm.
While the title track has reached a certain status that welcomes the likes of pharmaceutical commercials and ironic daytime show tangents, it is impossible to ignore the cohesion of this album. It is funky, it is soulful, and it is well composed. While not a constant rotation due to the genre not being my favorite, it is something I would ask sometime to turn up in practically any setting so as to have the good times roll.
Great production, and full of classics, only 1 or 2 not so memorial tracks on here
Great album, very engaging begining to the end. Kinda hate Will Smith hearing the original sample.
Groovy and dynamic
solid four, good fun but probably wouldn't listen to it as an entire album again
fun
Sturdy bass beats, fluid grooves, sweet strings adding depth – who knew this would remain so listenable and pleasurable? It's straightforwardly happy and elevating music inclined to make people move and non-dancers smile. This will lift a mood, so it has to be Nile Rodgers, right? Should obviously be labeled as Chic + (or featuring) Sister Sledge. It's easy to forget just how and musical – sweet, fluid, groovy, elevating – disco could be. And how well-made too. This level of organic musicmaking puts so much of "modern" dance music – say last 30 years – to shame, synthetic shame. "Thinking of You" and "Lost in Music" and "Easier to Love" are delightful, hidden treasures relative to the two big cuts, which are mighty and distinctly worthy. Deserves every last bit of platinum it got. A pinnacle of disco, indeed, and just about as good as that much maligned genre could do.
Really nice and chill album. Like the melodies and the voices a lot. Favourite song: thinking of you.
Some fire disco music what more can one say. Groovy, catchy, and feel-good. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards both elevate this album to its highest potential. Best - He's The Greatest Dancer, Lost In Music, Thinking Of You, We Are Family, and Easier To Love Worst - No bad songs 4.00/5
Nile Rogers guitar greatness. Super smooth and funky
3.5 not 4
#59 - Very good vibes! Chill disco, quite enjoyed it. And of course the couple bangers we all know.
Poh lekker disco
Y'know, disco's one of those genres where I know when an album's good or isn't, but I wouldn't really be able tell you exactly why either way. Maybe I'm just not gay enough—I'unno. So, like, this is obviously a really good disco album, thanks largely to Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards's writing and production. I just can't tell you why I think it's a better CHIC album than the last one I heard, RISQUÉ. Hell, I couldn't even articulate why I was so in-the-middle on **that** album. To me, disco's just disco—if there's there, it's there, and if it ain't, well, white people who ain't the Bee Gees probably made it. I will make one specific remark: past the title track, I feel like the album starts to drag a little. I don't think anything really changes past then, and my drifint attention around then might hafta do with how much sleep I'd gotten that morning, but I'unno. It just feels like a small step down from "He's The Greatest Dancer" and the frequent film needle drop title track. I mean, that first one didn't get sampled into "Gettin' Jiggy Wit' It" for nuthin'. Anyway, I feel like I'm ramblin', so lemme jus' cap it here. The album's a 4, it's solidly in the "good disco" camp, and... I'unno. I keep thinking their name's Sledge Sisters, like the Scissor Sisters.
I’m at a really good 4. The biggest misstep on this album is the endlessly droning “Somebody Loves Me,” but besides that, what a great CHIC album. Yes, I know; it’s a Sister Sledge album, but this may as well be CHIC ft. Sister Sledge. That’s not to be taken as a complaint at all; I’m sure they had some level of say in the instrumentation and lyricism to make the songs feel more like their own, but this is a Nile Rodgers-led production if I’ve ever heard one. Some of the lingering issues from Risque are here, but they come up far less often; a few songs hit on a little too much repetition, or a melody that lingers a bit too long, or a soundscape that just loses its luster after 4 minutes without really changing stuff up. Those issues are here, but I can usually look past them because of the excellent vocals of Sister Sledge. I really don’t have any complaints; it’s a damn good album that gets dragged down to a 4 because of “Somebody Loves Me,” but without that track, I’d probably be at a 5. Honestly, I’ll probably just listen to it that way. It’s a very good listen, it’s catchy as hell, and it’s just some of the best disco of the era. Easily deserving to be on the list.
Groovy 70's disco album. The bass lines are solid in this one. Understandable why We Are Family was such a hit because the other songs are all solid bangers as well.
Influential tracks Nile Rogers slaughters again. Got Lost in Music. Another gem I was only aware of the major singles. Thanks for the deeper dive. Catchy numbers, upbeat, danceable. The ballads are also soothing.
What a bop. I think you can put anything Nile Rodgers worked on in front of me and I'd like it. 4/5
LEKKER
A really great album that is like sultry disco.
He's the Greatest Dancer is a banger! The rest chills out, disappointingly. Still good, just wish the party vibe continued!
3.9
From front to back this album is filled with some really good classic soul music.
Funky and fun. A pristine example of good 70's disco production with great vocals on top.
This is basically a Chic album under a different name, which is no bad thing. Amazing bass from Bernard Edwards, especially on Thinking of You and We Are Family. The funkier songs work better than the slower tempo ones, but overall this is a highly enjoyable listen.
So I drop the needle on this album and the first thing I hear is the main sample from Gettin' Jiggy Wit' It. Good start. Of course, the song, We Are Family is a titanic hit. It's all kinda one groove until the last couple of tracks. But it's a good groove.
I was surprised just how many songs I knew from this already, and blown away by how much fun it was. My expectations weren't high because I'd always considered Sister Sledge 'old people music' but this was a great record
toller sound, viele hits wie We Are Family und Lost In Music. schwer einen favoriten für die playlist zu wählen. die remixes am ende des albums hätte es nicht gebraucht, die originale sind perfekt!
This was a great disco album. The bass was addicting and the vocals were beautiful and powerful. There were just a few songs that didn't grab much attention. Otherwise extremely solid. 4/5.
He’s the Greatest Dancer and We Are Family are good, the rest are ok.
nice solid disco album
Enjoyable listen
This album is funky, it swings. It makes me want to sing and dance. The vocals are incredible and the instruments are clear and good. This is music.
Лучшая песня - We Are Family.
I wasn't a massive fan of disco at the time, but listening back now I find myself with a smile on my face Greatest Dancer 4/5 😎 Lost in Music 4/5 👍 We are family 4/5 🙂 Easier to love - 5/5 🌞 Overall, quite enjoyable
High 3
this had some great hits i enjoyed it a lot, i didn’t know these guys made some of the songs on this
I don't think this is a true 4 to me. Looking on my past ratings, you know? Like, this ranks higher than Revolver for me, but lower than Highway 61 Revisited. It's like a 3.5. It's def a bit repetitive and not something I'm going to be pulling to the front of my queue, but I would actively put it on again. Lemme listen again actually and get back to you.
Good slick R&B
why is this actually making me wanna disco dance
Pretty good for a disco album. I recognize some of the songs remixed in more modern pop songs e.g. he's the greatest dancer in Will Smith's "gettin jiggy with it", plus the influence on Daft Punk is unmistakeable. An album to get up and boogie to, not to listen while lounging in your favorite chair.
Great, but not GOAT, for slower 70s jams. Would listen again!
This was actually my very first time listening to an entire Sister Sledge album from beginning to end. So first off, if the actual song “We Are Family” just popped out of existence forever, I definitely wouldn’t miss it. Other than that, this album had some really good tracks that were very influential for modern-day dance and house music. Also, when it comes to Nile Rodgers, his name speaks for itself, and you can always count on getting something of good quality. I’m not going to pretend to be an expert or huge fan of disco, but overall, I enjoyed this album simply for what it is.
Fire disco, def need to revisit. Very fun and joyous. Pride month 🌈 :)
the highlight of this album is the production - nile rogers and bernard edwards knock it out of the park, as they often did with this era of disco. the title track is iconic, catchy, and still holds up incredibly well. i also enjoy the hit 'he's the greatest dancer' which holds up nearly as well. the album cuts here are not as strong, with the exception of the production (at least they all sound good), but the songs can be a bit repetitive or uninteresting at points (although it IS disco, i would imagine they would play very well in a dance club). overall, a pretty good, not great album.
Best Song: Lost in Music. The whole song is a beautiful vibe, down to the fact that they're singing "Lost in music". I feel like a lot of artists would've been compelled to write it as "lost in the music", but that seemingly subtle matters a lot, to me at least. Worst Song: Somebody Loves Me. What a waste of the energy from the previous song, that it just has to spill into this overwrought ballad. Overall: The best disco - which this inarguably is - has an undeniable element of joy to it. There's just a beautiful brightness to the whole album that makes it so enjoyable to listen to. Music for when you're feeling alive.
First, I can only think of the '79 Pirates before I listen to this. That was a fun time in my childhood and memories are vivid. As I listen, I swear I'm listening to every 90's Hip-Hop album ever made. Looking up Sister Sledge though, they aren't nearly as sampled as I thought. I'm a 70's funkateer, so this album resonates hard with me, even though it's more disco/soul than pure funk. Love it! Didn't realize the album was so complete from beginning to end.
Classic disco / R&B album, I don't think I have listened to it as an album before. Nile Roger being the producer on it and you can hear him all over it. It really is great! Not sure on 2 remixes each of lost in music and we are family, one each would have been enough. Stand out tracks: - He's the greatest dancer - Lost in music - Thinking of you - We are family - Easier to love
Great record. Lots of fun, Nile Rogers-y stuff. I enjoyed.
this album was fun as hell. didn't necessarily need the remixes, but thats the fun part of a remastered album. kinda of crazy to think that 'We are Family' only came out in the 90's. But, here we are.
Nice disco atmosphere. The perfect album to listen to in the background, 4/5
Came for the groove, stayed for the bass
girl power for real. so groovy, 4/5
I don't know why I didn't think I'd like this...it was great! Hell yeah I'll take some disco!
Vocals are amazing. A romantic disco vibe overall.
Sick.
Funky and flipping fun, loved it!
One of her better collections
Heck yeah
Such a fun album!!
