Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Peak Disco? The title track seems to be everywhere from soundtracks to grocery stores. All this was fine but not something i'm going to listen to again.

I'm not a fan of disco, but this is some of the better out there? Still. can't see myself listening to this again anytime soon.

This one I know. Big, dance-y sound. Great album!

A fun disco/dance album. I do feel a bit like I'm at a wedding though. Does get a bit repetitive but a good example of the genre. 5.75/10 (2.875/5)

Sister sledge sounds like the name of a lost hardcore band. 7/10

When I listen to the title track, all I can think of is the scene of Gene Hackman doing drag in Birdcage, what a great fucking movie. Alternatively, I think of many cringey work and school events where this played in the background. Apart from that, the title track is the only real standout on here. The rest of this is very serviceable disco music so if you are having a 70s themed dress-up party I suppose you could put this on if you found it at an opshop. The deep cuts here are good, surprisingly so, but not enough for this album to warrant more than a couple of spins for this project. Highlights: We Are Family

3 08.03.2025

Smooth like a summer breeze in a convertible

Never heard any of these before aside from We Are Family and that’s not even the best song on the album smh. Was decent overall, some songs better than others. Best song: He’s the Greatest Dancer Notable(s): Lost in Music

Disco!

Enjoyed nostalgic pop

Just good vibes all around ! Great vocals and great production from Nile Rodgers. 7/10 fav songs : Lost in Music & One More Time

Solid...have always thought the disco era was underappreciated.

Not a bad album. Recognized very few songs, but very listenable. 3/5

Great tunes on here. Nile is a magician.

Decente. Buen rollito y buenas bases.

Groovy

Solid album

Disco. Decent songs and great vocals. But still disco.

Flere gode dressmann-reklame-låter. Elles god funk.

Whoa! The album opens with the source of the main sample in Gettin Jiggy wit It! And of course it's Nile Rodgers. He's a genius. Somebody Loves Me reminds me that I don't like slow songs by disco artists. The back half feels a little too samey. I enjoyed this album overall I think but wish that more songs stood apart from each other.

That's a lot of good songs. It's hard this one, because it's great but I wouldn't choose to listen to it. 3.5 I reckon.

I knew the famous songs and enjoyed the vibe of the album - but it didn't grab me

So I didn't include the egregious final four tracks in my listens or rating. It's not my taste but it was uber fucking funky. The bass and those disco drums make it impossible not to tap along at your desk.

Highlight Song/s: You're a Friend to Me This is some really sweet soul music, though it is a bit bland.

FAMILY STICKS TOGETHER

Groupe connu par le morceau 'We are family'.

Disco definitely isn’t my go to genre, but I absolutely love the super funky guitar and bass and the beats definitely make you want to dance. The slower songs aren’t my favourite, but the more upbeat ones are pretty fun. Overall, happy to have listened to it, but unlikely to return to it on my own. That said, I will definitely hit the dance floor at a wedding when We Are Family inevitably comes on.

3.5 - now i know where all the daft punk samples came from

I had heard the title track but none of the other songs. Favorite song: Somebody loves me

Beste låt: He's the Greatest Dancer

The song “We Are Family” definitely brings back memories! I have no ill will toward Sister Sledge or even toward disco… but I think as a genre it is too polished for me and, truthfully, I simply cannot dance. It’s good to be exposed to the best of each genre through this list but since I won’t return to this it’s a respectful 3/5 for me.

Ah, disco. What a wild time! In all honesty, this is superb disco. Not all dance tracks, but a good mix of singles that are just pure fun and others that tackle bigger issues of race, art, and the record industry. It is well done, and it works for the most part within the constraints of the genre. But it is disco. And as much as I get nostalgic and even tap my feet, I feel those limitations. A catchy and honorable effort from a troubled genre. I'll take it... today.

I don't know how to do this stuff. It's good, no, great! But it's too much and too long and I get bored, because it's more of the same. Eeeeeeeh.

Not my jam but classic.

Pretty solid listen, though Somebody Loves Me was an absolute drag. Way too slow for an 8 track pop album, only 4 minutes but felt twice as long.

This was fine. I’m not a huge fan of disco, and I don’t think of this as a great representation of the time, save for the title track. It’s not bad, but not some of the best of the era that should be on this list.

This is one of those albums where I wish you could give half a star because I'd feel more comfortable with my rating. Look, "We Are Family" is an all-time classic. I will definitely jam to that song. As far as this whole album goes, the music is really good, the vocal quality is fantastic, but the lyrics are SO BAD. Not only are they overly repetitive, but just from a writing perspective they either don't feel like they fit the flow of the song, or are just generally weak. Distractingly bad. I'd feel more comfortable giving this a 2.5 than a 3, but I don't think it really deserves a 2 star rating, so here we are. One of a few albums where I'd be happier if it was just an instrumental.

I'm not a huge fan of disco, but it was fun listening to a whole pile of hip hop samples.

Very 70s. Aside from the big hit the rest was listenable.

We are family is a bit too much / overdone at this point but the rest of the album is actually pretty decent disco/dance music if you like that kind of stuff (which i do)

I hate that I thought of the stupid will smith song. Overall very catchy with memorable bits

When they were funky, I enjoyed it for the most part. We Are Family is fine, I guess. Does it need to be over 8 mins long? I don’t think it does. Overall it was too much slow ballad for me to enjoy all that much. I didn’t hate it but I certainly didn’t like it all that much either. I’ll round up from 2.5 to a favourable 3

A step back in time to the 70s and the height of disco

Not as naff as I thought it was going to be A generous 3 for massively exceeding my expectations

Disco, m'agrada. Ja coneixia la cançó de "we are family" que dona nom al disc.

Background noise R&B album, not entirely terrible.

Pretty good stuff

Very disco, but I do not need 8 minutes of title track like even the Birdcage faded that shit out

🕺🏾🪩

Disco is not for me. Nile Rodgers is though. This is fairly solid. The production is slick, and the instrumentation is well done. It's just not a thing I'll return to.

This was a little better than I was expecting. I'm not a fan of this funk/soul, but this was catchier and less repetitive than most so far. Not bad!

One should not have so many club classics on one album

A bit repetitive

Great instrumentation and production Very feel good Very well made and a great album full of classic songs but just lacks a certain something that would make it 5 stars and I swouldnt register to the album.

Chic's playing is the best part and there's some very sample-able bits but mostly it just sounds like disco to me.

vibes, 6.5/10, maybe a 7

Production and musicianship is on a high level, but the general song writing lets this album fall from a 4 to a 3

Some daft funky vibes but the title track I can't stomach anymore

Average sounding album, most songs blended together, but they didn't sound terrible.

Interesting to see this being the origin of many samples for songs in the 90s-00s

Classic.

Original album is good very old school, disco not my style but can appreciate ,love the remix’s gives some unique flavors building on the album

R&B disco, pretty standard, it was nice to hear the We Are Family remixes. Not blowing me away but happy to have had the chance. Helped me focus a bit.

One of the better funk pop albums?

3+ Stars (9/15)

Good standout hits, rest of the album felt a bit lukewarm.

Good vibes on this groovy LP, feeling the love

The first three songs up until Frankie were real bop-inducing and was pulling the album to a very strong 4-star start. But then as the album went on, the momentum was slowing down and the energy was fizzling out to leave it as a 3.5/5 in the end with a bump to 3.

Not bad, sick of the singles though

Disco music! I was born too late to like disco. It's always been either out of style or overly commercialized. I feel like as a rule, disco songs outstay their welcome. They're overly long and seem so vapid lyrically. I also get that disco was very important for its time, and that it forever changed pop music. This album is fine. It doesn't speak to me at any sort of deep level, but music doesn't have to. At it's best, the songs on this album are fun! At it's worst, they're sappy and endless (does We Are Family really need to clock in at 8:21?). I'll go with a 2.5 rounded up because I am feeling nice. I'm still not a disco fan.

This is not my genre. There is nothing really wrong with it, it’s just not for me. The production is very slick, and the album is very smooth and polished. However as uptempo and decent as the songs are, it gets a bit samey. That’s said I find it easier listening than many other disco tinged funk albums. I didn’t hate it, I see the influence of it, but the album doesn’t interest me, and I neither the music or the lyrics, as good as they are, connect with me.

Nile Rodgers created his own town and distinctive world on the guitar. It is undeniable when you hear those first funky, punching notes. Some massive dance music sample originated on this album and it’s clear why artists keep coming back to his well. Fun, dancy, hip, would have been higher without the ballads.

I needed some disco in my life and I fit my boogie on.

Is disco still dead? I'm something of a Nile Rodgers stan, so rosy glasses might impact my review here. I can groove to this. It's a solid example of what made disco such a phenomenon back in the day. That said, I was hoping for more upbeat material after the opening track. Nothing else quite lived up to the guitar hook a lot of us first heard in Gettin Jiggy Wit It. This gets a pass for me, I don't hate disco.

Disco.. een genre dat zo over-the-top is dat het soms echt goed kan zijn... hier enkele zeer goeie deuntjes (en zelfs veel die ik kende zonder het te weten)

Boring and samey.

Klassiker We are Family, aber sonst hats mich nicht beeindruckt. 3 Sterne

Guter Soulsound, mag We Are Family tatsächlich nicht so sehr als Song.

I don't think I've ever listened to this before. Of course, the song We Are Family is ubiquitous. I can't imagine getting pleasure from hearing this after it being played at sporting events and in commercials for my whole life. Right from the first song you can hear this is Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards. The dry guitar, and funky bass lines- It is a palette that I'm comfortable with. It's best when it stays uptempo. I like the songs He's the Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, and Thinking of You. It runs out of steam towards the end.

I mean it's fun. I just don't need this much. They find a bassline and say let's sit here for five minutes. 7.25/10

Curti.

After the first song I wasn’t super stoked to hear the rest. It was very disco, and I’m not anti disco, but I didn’t think I’d enjoy an entire album of it. However, aside from that track, and the title song, which has been played to death at this point, the rest of the album was lovely. I would gladly listen to this again.

Disco era classic group. Album opened with one of my favorite tune. Good album overall.

Not unpleasant but can’t say I’ve ever been a big fan of disco. For what it is I can appreciate it’s a good record though and I’m sure it stands out in the pantheon of disco albums.

Not a genre I like but this one is packed with hits and you can appreciate the Nile Rodgers impact.

It’s more of an album to be respected than loved for me. The disco hits are the obvious stars, and while I don’t love the r&b and soul elements the melodies and production arrangements are really strong.

Nice classic soul music. You can tell it influence people like Jamariquai.

nice but I also wanted it to go harder 3.5

groovy

Disco bass lines are some of my favorite. Opening two tracks are nice and groovy, while Somebody Loves Me slows it down for a nice love song. We Are Family is a wonderful, classic disco song. Catchy chorus, great instrumentation, powerful vocals, it has the works.

Good song, okay album

A few real bangers here! Not a full album of them though.

melodic, repetitive, really enjoyable. I think what carries this album the most is that the singing is always on point, just a relaxed time even if you aren't at a disco or something

Basically perfect disco. Upbeat and clean. Nice.

Filled to the brim with disco anthems I've heard my entire life, so this was nothing new to me. But I can imagine this blowing the roof off when it came out

Really good disco album. Lots of fun and obviously worthy of the attention it got back in the day. Though the sisters’ family vibe adds a lot of charm and consistency to this album, I don’t think it pushed the boundaries of disco — just cemented it’s legacy of influence in the 70s and beyond. Good album! A 3.

It's not my style of music, but I still enjoyed it.

Classic, but not my thing.

That hip Nile Rogers sound is ubiquitous throughout the album and the familial familiarity is quite obvious with the Sledge Sisters singing. (Mick Picks: THINKING OF YOU, WE ARE FAMILY, and super groove guitar lick in ONE MORE TIME) Ohh, to be a part of the era in which the Pittsburgh Pirates enjoyed success, to the soundtrack of WE ARE FAMILY... lucky jagoffs!

kinda boring

Ok so in all reality I hate The Greatest Dancer with a passion, the singer cannot count and sings off beat the whole fucking song it triggers all my homicidal itches Some songs are palatable

Besides hearing "We Are Family" in context and the hook for Will Smith's "Gettin' Jifggy Wit It", there's not much here for you if you're not a fan of disco. It's a nice time capsule, and good to hear those two pieces in context, but there's just not much here for me.

Fun listening

solid soul album

Keep the funk train going

Rating: 3.5/5 | Favorite Track: We Are Family --- This is such a fun listen! A bright, warm disco album with great vocals and lush instrumentation. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did.

Disco faves. Nils Rogers always delivers. Some hooks carry through to today. Disco not really my thing and the slow jams aren’t either. Good for what it is.

Great collection of songs from R&B/Disco legends. Good to put on and groove to.

Haven't heard much of sister sledge before. The instruments are fire 🔥. Lyrics and vocals are good but not my favorite. Would listen to it again but not often. This is great background music for when you're doing something else but not the kind of music that makes you stop and think.

Recognize a lot of it from rap samples. Not bad.

It’s good for what it is, I’m not a disco girl

Not bad. A little funkier than I was expecting from a disco album.

A nice collection of disco / R&B vibes. Some hits, but also felt some songs went on for a little too long. Overall- a good album

Famously you can’t choose your family ..

Such a cool album! I never really got into disco, so this is a huge departure for me. I really loved the first song, it really sets the tone for the whole album. I did feel like some of the songs were a little bit too subdued, almost like they were trying to showcase one of the sister’s voices and it didn’t showcase the entire band. I’m so happy this album popped up today, it makes me want to go listen and explore more disco. I can’t wait until we get to some Diana Ross.

Fun disco-y funky vibes from Sister Sledge. Had a solid sound the whole way through.

Some nice disco/funk/soul. 5.5/10

Don’t naturally gravitate to this sort of music at all. But one track Lost In Music has always appealed to me and a firm favourite. As music fans we are all probably lost in music and this song and words could be an anthem as to how we feel. A bit like John Miles and his great song Music (is my first love etc) But I can remember where I was when I first heard Lost In Music and how it struck a chord. I was in a swish nightclub in Palma Majorca when the DJ played an extended version of it. This was probably the best location to hear that song for the first time. I spent the rest of my holiday trying to remember lyrics of the song so I could discover the song on my return home which I eventually did thanks to I it becoming a hit in the UK. One or two other passable songs on this album make it not a complete turn off but it is that one song heard on holiday which reflects my rating. 3/5 2/4/25

I like disco, this album is quite fun and interesting. Maybe a bit weaker outside of the hits, but still a fun listen.

iconic but eh

Non male, rock classico tranquillo.

Hard to review. 4 absolute belter, 3 filler and one decent one at the end. I'll give it 3 stars, but the highs on the album are truly high.

3/5. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards are carrying the album. The sisters sound great of course, but I'm sure they would sound great anywhere. It's the combo of the two that really make them shine. Every track is not a banger for sure but the hits are classics, especially the title track. However, that first song really gets you groovin' the most. It's a solid disco album but don't think the whole album was a classic. The musicianship alone is worth it. Best Song: He's The Greatest Dancer, We Are Family, You're A Friend To Me

We are family is a massive song - and with the incomparable Bernard Edwards of Chic on bass how couldn't it be! - but I have forgotten the rest of the album

We Are Family is a banger. The rest... so so. But I'll give 'em the 3.

Good album. Groovy and great bass playing.

Good for what it is, but not exactly for me.

I really like sister sledge and knew most of the songs but the repeats began to be annoying.

The hits are good, the rest is pretty unremarkable.

Pretty groovy. 3/5

The atmosphere is nice and optimistic. Something to listen to on a weekend morning. Sounds quite repetitive and can be dull at times.

It’s a good fun listen.

I've never been a particular fan of Nile Rodgers' particular brand of disco - but it's deployed really effectively here. A really fun record with some very catchy, memorable tracks. There's a really infectious energy to the album and it just breezed by for me.

It was too happy lol. Like it was fiiiine just funk isn't massively my jam (if this is even funk, don't @ me)

It's chill

Enjoyable.

ahhh discoooo he's the greatest dancer kenni sogar! mich störed d drums schnell emal bi disco (ja es isch au chli s ding vo disco aber AH) we are family jsch huere churz?? ah nei het sich eifach so ahgfühlt ui isch das schnell verbiigange es isch iwie sehr ah mier verbii, sehr warm und schön aber für mich jz auchli langwilig ich los suscht gad nomal durre hahaha okay also somebody loves you kenntmer natürlich! sehr schön, wenn au gnueg langsam für min gschmack weiss aber nöd, öbis au vomene cover na kenn? guet han das eh bi jedem 2. album s gfühl hmm jaa es ischmer alles chli zu lieblich und ruhig, es isch schön, ja, aber schlussendlich au für mich langwilig. knapps 3

This is the least offensive form of disco for me - the songs are funky but boring, the voices are beautiful but the melodies are repetitive. Firmly middle of the road.

Solid album, with some absolute classics on there. Love Nile Rodger’s distinctive fingerprint.

I knew more of this album than I expected. Disco doesn't suck, it just is kinda okay.

70er Disco Klassiker „We are Family“ & „Lostcin Music“ machen das Hören zur Party, leider etwas zu eindimensional.

First time listening to the Sledge Sisters. "We Are Family" is one of those songs that's insanely popular yet I've never consciously listened to it. It's fine. I'll probably continue to tune it out whenever I hear it on the radio or in a movie. Favorite track: He's the Greatest Dancer

Easy listening. I'm not sure I would necessarily choose to put this on but who knows. It definitely a vibe. The version that’s on Spotify had like four or five versions of “We Are Family” so I was just tired of it. I can see why it was so popular at the time.

stg if this is that we are family song imma be pissed off. i lowkey hate that song pretty solid disco and soul, but nothing too interesting tbh. i still don't like we are family. never liked that song, i already think its repetitive and annoying, and then i find out that its 8 MINUTES. fuck that, overrated asl. everything else is good tho

Groovy

Nice and groovy enough!

my dad calls his sister "sister sledge" as a nickname. Maybe its from this hahah. sick vibes tho!

nile rogers is a king

great production, great vocals all over, classic! 7/10

Makes me want to get up and move. Full of soul and rhythm. Those family harmonies are tight.

Fun familiar lighthearted bops. Don't know that I'd listen on my own like this again though..

I liked it more than I thought I would, but probably won't relisten

While this is nice sounding disco music, it repeated lyrics a lot.

It's ok! Not my thing though.

Love the girls and the era. Not sure the album in its entirety is that significant ot great as a whole.

Heard two songs from it before. What a nice album, equally chill but also making me want to dance. 3/5

Like a wedding dance floor soundtrack, but enjoyable.

The title track was great, however the rest of the songs were ok to slightly boring.

This is fun, just a bit sluggish towards the end. Got immediately jumpscared in the first track by the origin of the “Gettin Jiggy Wit It” sample.

This album was a lot of fun. The most interesting thing for me was that my tastes seem to line up exactly with the tastes of the crowd on this one. My favourite songs had the most listens, and my least favourite the least listens. I listened to it while doing the Friday evening cleaning, and just wanted to dance throughout.

There were songs on here that were incredible and just all time classics. He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family, I was even cool with Lost in Music, something I've never heard before. But then the "heartfelt" songs kind of brought me out of it. Somebody Loves Me for example just brought the overall "fun" vibe down. Still a fun listen

This is #day170 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to some funky disco shit with a touch of soul, right? Very much a signature album for the late '70s. I'd never heard of the band before... my exposure to '70s disco was mostly limited to Boney M. and ABBA (which I think go beyond just disco), so this is another fun discovery. I'm not sure I'm that much into this kind of music to return to it anytime soon, though. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #171.

A few classics here!

Classic disco, as they used to say on American Bandstand, "It has a good beat and you can dance to it." Great production values, great electric rhythm guitar. While it is fun, I don't think I would listen to these songs outside of a wedding reception. I was a teenager in NYC when this came out, I was heading down the punk road.

Enjoyed it more than I expected. Some songs are a bit repetitive

Good R&B record, the singing is so beautiful, however, some tracks are unnecessarily long for a vocal-dominate genre. Still, so enjoyable. A 3-3.5/5.

Source of popular samples. Impressive amount of hits. Good example of the genre, but not something I would go back to.

Disco Funk. Bass lines are great and the songs are mostly fun. Overall a good album. 3.5/5 Might listen again

Pretty enjoyable and funky. Strong grooves.

i have heard these songs far too many times in my life

He's the Greatest Dancer is sampled in Will Smith's Get Jiggy With It. We Are Family is the big 1979 hit.

I did listen to this but it passed me by, other than "the song" it sounded samey but in a good disco way. Mid 3.

Pure disco goodness

Some great classic songs on here. I was wanting to hear other songs besides the classics that really grabbed me. Nothing grabbed me but it was a solid listen.

Some really solid tracks. I liked hearing the original "Miami 2017". "We Are Family" is such a banger. Like the reviewers said, a solid 3 or 4 songs, but the rest were filler. Nile Rogers is kind of a boss though.

It was alright. Not my style of music and there were too many re-records at the end. It has the song my grandpa always plays on it, so plus points for that. 6/10. Not horrible, but not my favorite.

suspiciously groovy…

High 3

Fun and groovy. 3.5

Difficult to rate. "We Are Family" is a timeless classic, an anthem particularly for those who are outcasts from their biological family and who found new brothers and sisters in whatever movement or culture they participate in. That said, other than "He's the Greatest Dancer", and I suppose "Lost in Music", the rest of the album is pretty thin. It's not bad, but I like disco, and I like this era, and I'd rather listen to a random Donna Summer album than this particular record.

Listening to this album, I am reminded that there is some truth in "Disco sucks". The big tracks on this album are obviously bangers and it's a good album, but somehow disco just seems to lack the purity and genuine emotion of funk or soul. Like house, disco can be great in the club when you are in the mood to dance and are willing to get lost in a groove, but there's something mechanical, manufactured and sterile about it.

a solid 3/5 i do enjoy discovering where those famous songs come from that i’ve heard throughout my life but never knew who sang them. this is the case with “thinking of you” and “we are family”, where the former is an absolute banger. i enjoyed two other songs from this album but the rest felt boring to me and i struggled to enjoy them properly.

Fun disco

Kind of funky, kind of jazzy.

Really enjoyable soul record. Stays consistent, but is lacking the extra oomph. Best Song: One More Time Worst Song: Somebody Loves Me

Funky fun classic

Would have been 4 had it not been over 2 hours! Great tracks, proper disco

A few classics and some fun music to dance to, but overall to safe, a pop album really has to bang the entire way through to be amazing

Sister Sledge didn't mean anything to me. It was only when I listened to the album that I recognized many of the songs. The music is actually not bad. I didn't know You're a friend to me and it's the track I like best. The vocals are really good. But overall the album is so disco and I don't like disco. 3/5

only knew we are family, great disco album with some good love songs on there but nothing crazy. 6/10

Solid 70s disco album

Getting Jiggy with it!!

Pretty cool, but dragged a bit towards the end.

Some disco was ok in it’s day. That’s where this lands for me.

Okay. I can vibe with this. This is a nice album. It's definitely different than the past few albums I've gotten. I'm really liking the variety of the past few weeks. Keep it up website! Anyways, back to Sister Sledge. The style of this music is fun. It's got some strong disco elements mixed in with a bit of soul. The presence of Nile Rodgers alone is enough for me to call this album good. I love his basslines. The singing is pretty good too. The writing is a bit repetitive, but certainly isn't bad. The album is quite consistent, with one stand out song in the title track alongside 7 other songs that are also pretty good. I like this album. High 3/5.

Ja was vet, niet mijn genre maar wel leuk. Soms vond ik de nummers net wat aan de lange kant

Super clear mix. All instruments are clear and pop out with limited effects and not overly aggressive stereo separation. More hits than I would have anticipated or knew about before listening.

It's Chic being Chic except it isn't Chic except it secretly really is just Chic. Pretty funky.

A really enjoyable disco album - leaders in their genre

Great start to the album, but it starts to drag on about half way through.

Not bad 3 stars.

Big old bunch of occasionally catchy disco masterminded Nile Rodgers/Bernie Edwards of Chic. They strike gold on He’s The Greatest Dancer which electrifies on every level and has hooks for days. We Are Family the title song is not gold at all in fact is horrible and cheesy but is also about as famous and as catchy. Nothing else is really as spectacular or as memorable and these sisters are also not the greatest singers so it can get pretty dull beyond the hits.

It was alright. Perfectly produced and the rhythm section rules and the singing rocked but not too many memorable songs.

Fun! Great stuff by Chiiiiiiic.

***A fun, energetic album

Not my favorite. But still pretty good.

Disco's not my thing, but the first few songs on this album are solid stuff regardless.

This one unfortunately from the jump can't be 5/5 because of we are family. I can't listen to that song another time, I'll be forced to so many more times over my life because movies use it as an easy go to. It was a fine album, good overall.

It's difficult to find praise for disco, a genre with a badly damaged brand, due to its proximity to a seemingly vapid white cocaine culture of the 1970s. But a closer listen reflects that disco rests upon great rhythm sections, and Sister Sledge delivers fanatically tight drums and guitar throughout. Vocals are a challenge; either you like this style of singing or you don't. I personally do not. The big surprise for me, however, was how positive the lyrics are, with messages of inclusivity, unity, friendship, and love throughout the album. This is not my vapid conception of disco; if anything, these lyrics feel quite resonant to today and perhaps to all of time. I appreciate the craft, even if the aesthetic doesn;t reach me. 3/5 stars

"We Are Family" might just be the perfect disco song. If that monstrous piano line doesn't make you want to move, check your pulse, you may be dead. And for those of us of a certain age, it brings up a delightful melange of memories... those awful Pirates uniforms, Gene Hackman in a dress, and family friends and relatives trying their best to boogie on down. It's the sound of communal joy. I also really liked "Somebody Loves Me." I thought it was heartrendingly beautiful, a magnificent performance by Kathy Sledge which deserves to be known better. The rest of the album... it's pleasant. Nothing wrong with it. It's lush and supersaturated like an evening news piece about the disco craze that's sweeping the nation. It's smooth dance music that's going to make anyone look good. But I didn't hear another "get on the dance floor" or "take them in your arms" number, so as an album I have to call it a 3.

After album C'est Chic by Chic I thought this type of music can't go wrong. And although Sister Sledge had the same producers as the aforementioned band, the drop in quality is quite noticeable. Two nice hits and a very average rest of album is certainly a disappointment, when compared to excellent C'est Chic. At least I finally learned who was the original creator of We Are Family, will be useful at pub quizzes.

Perfectly Passable 6/10

Had some good vibes to it! 3/5

Some really fun songs. Good voices.

Though there wasn't a whole lot to revisit in this record, the fact that it has an all-time anthem in "We Are Family" instantly gives it credibility. Very talented group, but not a lot of substance to me past that one song. Notable Tracks: - Lost in Music - We Are Family - all-time iconic classic 6/10

Never heard this before. Good solid funk/disco album.

Some great funk mixed a with a lot of meh.

Maybe you had to be there. Certainly the best disco album I've listened to in ages. Wasn't terrible but a bit too poppy at times for my liking. I'll give it a three.

Some bangers.

Catchy & boring at the same time

Really good vibe but nothing special otherwise

Music of a time and place. Very well done but not my thing

I liked this better than the Chic albums. Very good vocals.

Had one hit wonder vibes and I am not much of a disco person

"He's the Greatest Dancer" – 3,6 "Lost in Music" – 3,5 "Somebody Loves Me" – 2,2 "Thinking of You" – 3,4 "We Are Family" – 3,6 "Easier to Love" – 3,3 "You're a Friend to Me" – 3,2 "One More Time" – 3,2 Average 3,3

I've got alley sisters and me

It's good for 2 songs... Then its just rambling

I can understand the appeal, but it’s not for me. Like the rhythm, lyrics are plain Jane and repetitive

Upbeat Disco tunes with the very distinctive Nile Rodgers sound were a highlight. Some obvious highlights in the fact that all the proper Sister Sledge had are on this album. Groovy vibe. I like it - but the genre isn’t quite my cup of tea.

Again, I can appreciate the music for what it is and the massive Nile Rodgers influence, but I’m just not a huge fan of disco.

Pas mon style

Had some high points, but was a little past prime R&B

I was ready to dismiss this as schlock-y dance music for wedding receptions, but was pleasantly surprised. Once the horribly dated string parts are ignored, some serious funk appears. The all-star producers and musicians lay down tracks that would be used decades later to give Daft Punk something to work with.

A funky good time.

Good music, not my style, but could definitely groove to it.

"We Are Family" is obviously a classic, but the rest of the album was boring and full of love ballads. 3.5 for the disco parts, 2 for the ballads.

every song is a bit too long for listening at home as an album, but no skips

This was enjoyable, and I feel really sure it's important in music history, but for me today it is a "yeah I liked that"

Not my cup of tea

Pleasant. Nearly but not quite 4.

I did not really like it. Didn’t finish the album.

Iconic disco, and a lovely collection of voices. They feel like a predecessor to Destiny's Child. I put it on while cleaning the pedicab this morning before work, and I was getting smiles from the neighbors!

I feel like this album is carried solely by Nile Rodgers' funky guitar playing. Don't get me wrong—the singers are competent, the harmonies phenomenal, but the songs themselves aren't anything special. They drag on way too long, especially the boring and generic ballads. The tracks with the disco vibe are much, much better, but I don't think anything lives up to their biggest hit 'We are family'. 3 stars

This one was real fun. My fav part is listening to these jams and trying to pick out parts that have been sampled by hip hop artists. De la soul, will smith, pac, Kanye etc have all sampled joints off of this album. Good shit. Not something I’m going to go back to much, but the impact this has had on music and culture alone gets this a 3

Pretty great. 3.5 I think. I actually don't mind disco influences anymore now maybe?

4 All time classics, Chic at the top of their game as band and producers, hard to dislike this one. Again, Disco wasn't really an album scene, 12" remixes were the thing. The other tracks on this are more downbeat and reflective but show off the sisters high quality vocals and personality nicely. Ideal record form the disco era.

I feel removed/ignorant from the importance this album likely had when released. A good groovy album with some pretty recognizable tracks. I don't listen to much disco so it otherwise felt pretty par for the course

Sounds nice. Honestly couldnt get through it all. Every song goes on too long. I think the title track has been played to death but the whole album is definitely a vibe. Not something I want all the time, but possibly a cool album to put on for the right crowd.

Getting jiggy with it I only listened to about 1/3 of each remix.

The amount of samples out of this album powered the diddy crime syndicate for decades. It’s fun listening to these older disco and r&b classics and trying to place what rap song I heard the two bar guitar lick in. Other than the entertaining sample game this is a straightforward disco album. It’s a good one, and a lot of it is catchy. It kinda fell off after the first four tracks (I skipped the title track because if I never heard it again it would be too soon). Great dancing music, well executed, not really my jam but you simply have to respect it.

Typical pop album.

So, this is the home to the classic "We Are Family" song featured in so many feel-good and ending sequences of family movies. It's got some great moments and pockets. Especially with Nile Rodgers' instantly recognisable guitar playing, it was adding a lot of flavour and groove to tracks. This is particularly true for the opener, "He's The Greatest Dancer". I can spin that tune for ages. With a 42-minute runtime and only 8 songs, this album felt a tad bit tedious to listen through when it reached the middle of the tracklist. That was its lull. I never felt the quintet's chemistry very strongly. The frontwoman took much of the spotlight and her vocals were at times, strongly resembled a young Michael Jackson's. I felt that most of the time it was those strong instrumental pockets of grooves that helped carry me through the lengthy songs. I wasn't very moved by the vocals, harmonies or the energy from these songs. It didn't help that "We Are Family" was 8-minutes long. 8 minutes! Overall, a pleasant and easy listen. It got me reflecting on how my appreciation towards Soul started as early as I was a kid watching movies with a song from Sister Sledge. And the cover just captures the warmth from the tracks, very pretty!

Super soft, silky smooth, R&B with that signature rhythm guitar ever present. Very good but very much not my style.

Just ok...

Fun lil disco album here. A few hits on here but can't say it makes me want to dive further into their other albums. It was a nice surprise to start off with the song that was sampled in Will Smith's "Gettin Jiggy Wit It".

To me, this is the definition of disco. Disco isn't my favorite.

Neat little Disco album. 3.5/5

It was not really my style but nice either way

I can't stand the title track having had to hear it so many times, and the ballads & slower tracks (Somebody Loves Me, Easier to Love, You're a Friend) are pretty dire schmaltz, but the uptempo disco tracks (Greatest Dancer, Lost in Music, One More Time) are perfect: wild funky bass grooves, that drum beat, Nile Rodgers going nuts on guitar, a bit of surplus percussion, some delightfully cheesy production touches, the alto vocals and tight harmonies floating gently over the track, just taking it easy. Pure fun. The recording is so crisp and there's so much space in the mix which makes it really warm and inviting. That bass tho *Homer Simpson drool*

High 3 stars.

Brilliant album!

Soul, Disco, Funk, 1979 -> 3

Lidt frontloaded men generelt virkelig catchy! Titelnummeret lyder meget federe end jeg huskede det. Er der en eneste disco-plade fra 70erne hvor Nile Rodgers ikke spiller guitar?

Three feels harsh, but four seems generous. This album is a solid 3.5.

It's alright

Good vibes, albeit a bit cheesy now. Hard to ignore the uses and remixes of those hits. A "great at the time" album.

Funky disco, I like it. 3.375

aceptables, eran buenos en esa época
