Reviews (page 8 of 13)
My brothers and I would have "disco fights" in our garage when we were kids. We'd play a disco hits CD, turn on a strobe light and bubble machine and then just absolutely wail on each other. We Are Family was one of the songs featured on the compilation CD. That nostalgia made me really enjoy this record.
Good music, I was hoping for more discoveries.
Very listenable with a couple of corkers.
Fav songs: He’s the greatest dancer
Enjoyed it. Never even knew who sang We Are Family before.
We are!!!!
Lost in music , caught in a trap Proof that the disco sucks movement was boomers being fools , oh and with some racism.
It's pretty fun. I wasn't surprised to see that Nile Rodgers was a producer; i can feel the Chic in this. Still, it's ephemeral. I know disco became a musical pinata, with everyone taking a turn beating it down, which has clearly affected its legacy. I don't know if it's cultural residue or just my taste, but I have no desire to put this on again. I still thought it was a good listen, and wouldn't be mad if I heard it again, but I'm not going to add any of it to my collection.
I mean, pretty tight disco album. The Sledge can sing, the bass is a sweet groove, Niles' guitar is funky, and the (fake?) strings swirl around. Smooth as the silk the ladies sport on the cover.
Delicious grooves topped with smooth, powerful singing. “He’s the Greatest Dancer” alone is worth the price of admission. Just a smidge away from a a 4 for me.
3 out of 5 Upbeat 70s funk. I knew their top hits, but enjoyed listening to some great b-side tracks as well. Overall too many songs so only 3 stars.
Sounds great, wonderful vocals and rhythm, just very rarely suits my mood.
This is about as Disco as you can get. Solid hooks. Doesn't really hold up.
Great
in da clurb we all fam/5
Good.
ok girl, not where i parked my car
there were definitely some boring moments but overall it was an okay album
Classic
Even Will Smith sampling this lot can't ruin it. I have to admit, when I started this task I hated disco, but I have come to appreciate it now - well, the stuff with Chic anyway, and surprise surprise, this album is essentially a Chic album. No issues there. It's top notch disco. That's it. Now, where's the cocaine? That's obviously a joke. No one loses their coke. Best Tracks: He's The Greatest Dancer; Thinking of You; We Are Family
Interesting. The end of the disco era, and beginning 80s soul. Didn't love it. Liked parts of it more than I expected to, but not a great one.
Well they were definitely not songwriters, but good singers and one memorable hit.
Yeah, it’s not horrible 🤷🏻♀️ Stand-outs - He’s the Greatest Dancer - Lost in Music
Mixed on this one. There are some undoubtable mega hits on this album, so much so that you've heard them forever and over and over again. That works against this album because you hear those songs, you get it, and then you get to the other songs and that not quite different or unique enough to elevate the album. Overall good but you've heard this all before
Review - a classic disco album, for all that's worth. Reasonably fun, self-consciously chic and carefree music. First track spends a verse just name dropping clothing brands. Cutting edge for it's time I imagine. Guitar parts are good. Some fun basslines. Generally a fine album but not really my thing and I disagree with the ethos of disco so never really going to be my thing Rating - 6/10 Need to hear? YES
i hate to be the downer here but i found this album repetitive as heck… but the flute was a nice touch i was grooving hard to that. this album makes me feel like i should be in an austin powers movie and not in a good way. unfortunately not my vibe but i appreciate the heritage it holds.
Love most of the funk. Had impure thoughts about several of the sisters back in the day.
The album that sang us out of The Birdcage, The Associate, and Ice Age: Collision Course 🎥🍿
1: We Are Family 2: One More Time 3: He’s The Greatest Dancer
The singles are great on the radio, or in a mix tape. But the rest is filler.
3/5 we are family!
Love the first track but as an album I found the listening experience cloying and one-note and therefore struggled through - surprised myself with this rating not being higher!
Nothing like a little disco for the work day!
Na na na na na na na
I'm a little conflicted with rating this album. I have issues with it that would normally lower it's rating, but I also really liked the album regardless. Almost every song is too long. ('We are Family' is eight and a half minutes!) And within these excessive runtimes the songs are very repetitive sonically and lyrically. This genre also tends to sound quite similar song to song, leaving this album with a very monotonous sound. But I actually really liked the album. And I'm tempted to give it an even higher rating because of that, but I won't. Three stars. (Favorite song: He's the Greatest Dancer.)
Classic Disco. What can ya do?
Decent record… for disco. Not a fan of disco in general.
Pleasant enough, but this is not my family. ★★★

6/10 – Decent
No real highs or lows.
Nice funk/r&b album, catchy and groovey.
Some real groovy moments. Nile Rodger’s guitar playing is so infectious. I like the bass playing as well. Obviously the stars here are the Sledge sisters, and they do shine. I don’t love the strings to be honest, and I don’t really like the slow songs. Once they establish a groove, as a listener I resent any break from the disco tempo.
bring disco back to the clubs
Super groovy and relaxed vibe. Vocals weren’t my favorite but also nothing terrible. Decent melodies overall but the lyrics were a bit distracting and not exactly my style. For sure a great album and probably just not on the end of soul and R&B that I enjoy most. Still really consistent and great backing instruments and nice sound overall.
Made me mum cry
Some disco bangers
Sister Sledge, wonderful and fun listening. Indulgent into their music and discography. Listen again album!
Feeling the funk Fave track: He's the Greatest Dancer
A few chic bops. 3.5/5
Listened to and from work. Fun little album. Like a lot of disco to me it kind of all blended together.
It was okay.
Love hearing the source of so many samples in hip-hop. Great feel good record
An absolutely beautiful and lush R&B/Disco record. Everything on this album is a winner, especially the big hit, We Are Family. But stuff like Easier to Love are absolutely gorgeous tracks. Stuff that'd make a great sample for a 2000's/2010's hiphop track. THAT SAID, for as positive I am about this album, it's just not something I really think I'll ever go back to. Great album that's just not my thing.
Day770 - this is more about what a genius nile rogers is.
WE ARE FAAMILY!! Favorite Song : ONE MORE TIME 7/10
We are one hit wonders! The rest of the album was fine, good vocals with slappa da bass but never reaches the highs of We Are Family. 6/10
So many songs here are ICONIC. Everything here is very interesting and well done. I really enjoyed this. The vocals are amazing too. Liked Songs: "He's the Greatest Dancer" , "Somebody Loves Me" , "Thinking of You" , "We Are Family" , "Easier to Love" , "You're a Friend to Me"
Enjoyed this one. Probably not something I'll come back to though.
wi ar femili :D FAVS (top 3): hes the gratest dancer, somebody loves me, we are family mençoes honrosas: lost in music, thinking of you, one more time é um album disco bem basiquinho e normal sinceramente nada mt uau mas tbm nada de ruim!! nota final: 3.5/5
Disco is a genre I'm very lightly familiar with. This could considered an intro of female disco vocal groups for myself. Enjoyable, definitely groovy. You can definitely hear Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards' production through the album.
Another Nile Rogers/Bernard Edwards album? The tight back band is there, some flashes of the soulful and funky bass but its no C’est Chic. The bass is a bit back in the mix and the album is poorer for it. Gets funky on a couple of tracks like We Are Family but overall it lacks something that C’est Chic had, a spark, the overall energy. Not sure. Its Nile’s and Bernard but it hits a groove and stays there in most songs, no texture and a bit repetitive and plain. Fine for the dancefloor i imagine, but as a solo listen, drags a bit. i think it is the variety on C’est Chic that puts ut above this. It’s practically the same band plus the Sledge Sisters on this album, all sings seem to be wrotten by Niles and Bernard, so really a Chic album, but not the best one.
Classic disco vibe with one of the most famous songs ever (We Are Family) and for good reason. A solid listen.
Fun and funky with great production. The hits were great and the rest was mediocre.
good album, not a big fan of R&B/funk
I enjoyed the songs! Just got a lil repetitive, and was a lot to listen to all at once. spread out, I feel like I'd like them all a little bit more. They were also very long songs, and I do not have all that time lmao
I would say this is a must listen for sure, simply for the sheer amount of iconic singles and how they have in turn been sampled, interpolated or inspired music that came after it. Kinda sad that it seems they had a whole battle over the trademark amongst the sisters though.
Can still hear it's influence on modern music. Like the soul side, the disco side was ok.
Fun disco record!
Lotta of samples taken from here. Dated
The sisters' vocals with Rogers/Edwards is pretty irresistible. Cool how I recognize some of these from being 'in the air' but never knew where they came from, "He's the Greatest Dancer" being a strong example. I really wanted to like this more than I did. Outside of the title track and Dancer nothing really stuck to me.
Don’t hate it but not my favorite era of music
3.5 stars
Well... this was surprising. I've obviously heard of Sister Sledge and some of their hit songs, but I had no idea they were a singing quartet and that the musicians that played the music were not really an official part of the band but more like session musicians. Which is weird because if there is one thing I think about when I hear some of these songs is the iconic bass lines. And this led me down a rabbit hole about Bernard Edwards and all the music he contributed to as a bassist and producer. Legend.
Not My style but was fun to listen to
Nice relaxing tunes thx
They're good songs, just seem a little vanilla to me after being bombarded with them in cheesy movies for my whole life. I thought even the not hits on the album were solid. Probably just overplayed for me, otherwise would have gotten a higher score.
This felt like childhood. It’s fun but not something I would choose to regularly listen to. 3/5
What a banger is "Lost in Music"! If I had existed in the 80s, I would have seen myself dancing in a disco to this
it's ok
Not what I expected given my only knowledge going to this record was “we are family”. This was a lot more funky than I expected it to be, shoutout to the unreal bassline on “Thinking Of You”. I also particularly liked the slower ballads on the album, “Somebody Loves Me” and “You’re a Friend To Me”. Fun album! Not something I’m going to seek out or listen to again in the future, but this was overall extremely pleasant.
I feel like when I was a kid, disco was deeply uncool. It was a relic from past generations and the punchline of jokes, mostly relegated to themed parties. In particular there were a handful of disco songs that everyone knew—still knows—that have been endlessly adapted for TV commercials, overplayed at weddings, had their lyrics reworked for crude grade school rhymes, etc. “We Are Family” was (is) absolutely one of those songs, so when I saw this album name I expected some hokey clap-along disco. I was pleasantly surprised to find this to be more soulful and to have aged better than I expected. The vocals from the sisters Sledge are especially strong. I think it was a good decision from producer Nile Rodgers to actually put the lead single in the middle of the album, which was somewhat unusual for 1979. The most memorable parts of “We Are Family” have group-sung vocals which, in my opinion, really overpower the more sophisticated and sultry stylings found on the rest of the album. Being encouraged to get through the first four songs, at least, before getting to the blockbuster single both shows off the qualities of the other songs and frames “We Are Family” in a different light once you get there. I waver between 3 and 4 ⭐️ here, but I think I’m ultimately not very likely to listen to this album again (maybe “Thinking of You”) so I have to err on the side of 3 ⭐️.
Opens with an incredibly solid start with He’s The Greatest Dancer, and while it doesn’t seem fair to say it drops off from there, nothing else really grabbed me in the same way. That said, there’s some real fun, funky sounds throughout and it’s just a good listen all the way through. 7/10, 3 stars.
Immediately recognized the riff from the first song from gettin' jiggy wit it by will smith. Going into it, I'm already thinking about Disco albums being repetitive and long, so I'm hoping this album isn't like that. Like the first song, does have that long period of just instruments for dancing, but pretty good song. Been a pretty enjoyable album so far. Each song is a good mix of well done vocals, interesting melodies and hooks, and good funky bass and guitar.
This is a fun album. Only song I recognized is We Are Family. Lost In Music is my favorite song from the album. Some of the slower songs took me out but overall I enjoyed this.
Yea
3.5.
What a great find. I never knew how much I liked disco and dance music. The music is great and the singing beautiful. A feel good, fun album. Obviously the music of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards is responsible for all the funky, dance, pop tunes.
🪩 queens
I feel like disco may get a bad rap. While the lyrics aren't particularly interesting, the music is pretty great with some unexpected chord progressions. Not bad.
I was only really familiar with the song "We Are Family," which is not a favorite of mine, but this is good.
Classic.
I enjoyed the fast paced dance tunes- the slow ones weren’t my jam
Some songs that really hit well, it has a good overall sound.
Beautiful album, with beautiful singing. Great songwriting and just such a pleasant experience
Enjoyed this, lots of feel-good tracks. Standouts were Lost in Music, We are Family and He's the Greatest Dancer. Some dull and forgettable tracks, however.
Standout Songs: He’s the Greatest Dancer Thinking of You We Are Family You’re a Friend to Me
And smoother and my phone would have slid off my desk. Just joyful to listen to. Close enough to a three to justify.
Fun chill disco album. The instrumentation is great, the vocals are also cool but nothing outstanding. It had a couple more relaxed and vocal-focused parts that I thought were quite boring, but all in all, still an enjoyable album. 7/10
Lots of radio classics here.
3.5 stars. I really liked this album and will be adding it to my regular rotation
good stuff from the disco era 3/5
We Are Family draws me in with its groovy bass and crunchy guitar rhythms. What really impressed me was the guitar cutting — it’s subtle and never showy, but extremely skillful, and that understated precision is what keeps pulling me in. Funk isn’t something I normally listen to, and before this I only knew the song “We Are Family,” but their style impressed me.
Classic R & B with some love songs sprinkled throughout the album. There isn't much else to say. Favorite Track: "We Are Family".
Stand-out tracks: He's The Greatest Dancer - the prominent strings in the background are a nice addition, but a bit overused by the end Somebody Loves Me - a more mellow and laidback track, compared to the rest Easier To Love - I like how the chords are unexpectedly unnerving, contrary to the melodies of most of the tracks on the album which are upbeat The album was pleasant to listen to, but most of it felt like very generic disco/R&B music to just dance to or listen to in the background. Nothing to really write home about.
Highlights: He's the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family Didn't know this was where the Will Smith sample is from. Other than that this record left no specific impression on me. It's disco, alright. It has the groove and it did get me jiggy wit it, but it was dull at the same time. As a collection of songs, I would hate to have to sit through it again. It doesn't click with me because the record rarely changes in style. But I guess some of the songs would hit the groove as intended if they were played individually. For instance Lost in Music comes off as an unimpressive song when looked at as a part of an album, but I do see it moving butts at some disco party. It's practically begging for it given the theme. But the again, some don't even work as dance tracks. How is anyone supposed to dance to Easier to Love?
I like the disco vibes
Day 2 We are Family - Sister Sledge 1. NEW He’s the Greatest Dancer - very long intro. It sounds like another song. I haven’t placed it yet but I’ll get there. Will Smith’s “Gettin Jiggy With It”? Not sure still working on trying to place it. I sort of hear Cat Janice’s “Dance You Out of My Head”. Not bad. I’d probably listen again. 4/5 2. NEW Lost in Music - it’s not bad. Not my favorite from the album, I already know it’ll be “We Are Family”. But it’s not bad. 3/5 3. NEW Somebody Loves Me - okay slower than the others. A little depressing, which is not the vibe the first two songs gave. Not really the vibe I’m personally wanting to hear right now. But continuing on. She sounds a little desperate but hey I get it, been there done that. Not really my vibe. 2/5 4. NEW Thinking of You - okay again very much not independent woman vibes which is not really my thing. The music and the little bounce to it isn’t bad though. Not a bad song just the lyrics are not my personal cup of tea. 3/5 5. We Are Family - a classic. An icon. Fun. Upbeat. Feel some passion behind it. I don’t need to say anymore 5/5 6. NEW Easier to Love - not bad. Somewhere in that middle ground between slow and upbeat. Not the worst not my favorite. 3/5 7. NEW You’re a Friend to Me - not even a minute in and just not feeling it. Slow and again just lyrically not my favorite. 2/5 8. NEW One More Time - more upbeat, thankfully. I like this one. A litlte more guitar than the others which I like. 4/5 Newly Downloaded: He’s the Greatest Dancer and One More Time. Overall: 3.25
vibe tracks, its alright.
Owned it at one time and rarely played it.
Before: I was never a huge fan but know they had a few hits back in the day and I think I liked some of them a little. I had a brief infatuation with disco in the mid 70's but it was never my favorite type of music. I'm already thinking 3. Let's check it out! | During: "He's The Greatest Dancer" starts off the album and of course I remember this one well. Not my thing really, but it does make you want to get out on the disco floor, LOL. Now I'm thinking I could possibly give this a 4 if the album as a whole is at least as good as the opener. Well, I had to skip through the next 2 tracks, "Lost in Music" and "Somebody Loves Me". My immediate thought when I saw the title "Lost in Music" is that The Fall, my favourite band of all time, released a song with the same title, "I wonder if it's a cover?". Turns out it is, but in the loosest sense of the word. Some of the lyrics are the same, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. I like The Fall's interpretation much better than the original and that is one of my least favourite tracks on that album, "The Infotainment Scan". Continuing with the task at hand, "We Are Family" is another great feel good track. I also liked "You're A Friend To Me". | After: I'm going to give it a 3. I don't deny it's a great album for what it is, but it's not something I would choose to listen normally. To be a 4 it's got to be something I would choose to listen to, enjoy, and not get bored with. Finally, if my 1979 playlist was not already 160 titles long, I would consider adding the three tracks from this album that I do like, to it. Aw, what the hell, I'll add "We Are Family", just for kicks. For reference my 1979 playlist is probably 95% punk, post-punk, and new wave. |
Le album, c’est chic! Trois!
I never realized that "Sister Sledge" were four different singers - yes, all sisters - who sang lead vocals on separate tracks, but (at least on this album) never sang together. Regardless, this is a classic disco album, released only a few months before disco fever in the US finally collapsed. It's a fine example of the genre - great beats, surging romantic string sections, and endlessly repetitive choruses (the title track is over 8 minutes long). And surprising absolutely no one, Bernard Edwards KILLS the bass playing throughout (he and Chic partner Nile Rodgers wrote and produced the album). "You're a Friend To Me" has a slight reggae vibe, which isn't what one would expect from a disco album, but it works. It's a great snapshot of the popular music of its day, polished to a mirror sheen - but I'm glad we've moved on.
i like the central theme of appreciating the family & relationships one has. the songs are quite similar, but there's a lot of talent in the sledge sisters. what a nice, feel good, disco album favorite(s): thinking of you, we are family, easy to love
Not fully my style of music. Had some great songs and production not sure id listen again though
Average
Fun beats to groove to, too much repetition in the lyrics for me tho 🙏🏼
Pretty decent R&B, just didn’t do anything for me really. It was pleasant to listen to at least.
It's pretty fun disco. Glad to see it on the list. Didn't do much for me.
Fun and groovy - was familiar with two songs.
Good sound, great voices and harmonizes, great bass. I don't know what to say, it's cool and funky and feels easy to see why it's popular. Check it out and keep it down.
Fun, funky and easy to dance to. A nice album, perfect for a family party or getting you moving and cleaning house on the weekend.
It was very groovy, i knew a few songs already. however, i ended up skipping a few songs halfway through. my favorite is lost in magic!
Considering my hatred of We Are Family, I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It was easy listening, kind of reminded me of the girl groups from the 60s
Somebody Loves Me - basse
it was fine but i think disco sounds too dated for me
This is great, I don’t see myself coming back to it much but it’s fun and well produced
I had never listened to a disco album straight through so this was a fun experience. I was surprised that I knew several of the songs, besides 'We are Family', and the songs I didn't know, I knew samples from. The production values are flawless, the lyrics and singing constantly upbeat, a nice album for a dreary winter day.
They weren't my favorites.
Disco superstars!
This album is like being a bar tending woman in the early 70s. The club you work at is one of the most happening spots in the city, so you've gotta be quick to pour a drink and fire back a rebuttal at all the jive-talking fools. Yea, you know you're hot. Your close-cut afro and flares combo is always gonna turn the drunken barflies on. But you don't go home with just any old suitor. That's not to say you don't have your fun. It's just that any encounter happens by your rules.
Suffers from the same thing as CHIC on the list where the sound is good but the songs get repetitive and don't go anywhere, which might be useful for dancing but isn't conducive to higher ratings
Track 1. (He’s the greatest dancer) 7/10 Track 2. (Lost in music) very repetitive 6.8 Track 3. (Somebody loves me) play this shi at my wedding bro 8.7/10 Track 4. (Thinking of you) 7.3 Track 5. (We are family) classic 8/10 Track 6. (Easier to love) 7.3 Track 7. (Your a friend to me) 7.2 Track 8. (One more time) 7/10 Overall: 7.4/10
It was consistent and lively. Very seventies with a fun groove. Very danceable.
Good, Chic 'n' all
Enjoyed this more than expected, really funky get out your seat type jams. Then We Are Family is just a cherry on top.
The music sounded quite funky . Obviously ha some of the most iconic songs we are family. The repetitives and the slow feeling to it wasn’t for me.
Fun Disco album.
Nice popmusic, great vibes, but not much else going on. 8 minutes of we ar family is a treat though.
Not my cup of tea, but for whatever reason the version of the title track on YouTube has the bass turned way the hell up and it's actually funky as hell. No wonder Pops Stargell fucked with it.
Some solid jams.
This was pretty solid. Just good disco
3.5 for yummy disco
chill, funky, nista spec, vrv cu zaboraviti na njih
The albums good
We Are Family is an iconic song that once again had heard, but never knew who the artist was. Another funky album with a lot of fun beats. 6.5/10
Understand why it’s on the list as there are some standout classics but listening in one go means that all the songs sound the same. Genre defining sound, but not my cup of tea.
Album #3 Sister Sledge: We Are Family An album, which, on initial instinct, I assumed would not be for me. Disco music has essentially been reduced to a joke since one night in the late 70s when everyone went from dancing to it in the club to pretending not to have ever enjoyed it overnight, practically nullifying its impact on every generation to come. Yet despite that, I was already very familiar with the infamous title track “We Are Family”, a song which I feel as though I have known my entire life, despite never once seeking it out or desiring to learn more. As a kid, this song was definitely not one that I considered to be cool, an opinion which I also held towards the only other disco song which has remained culturally relevant, “Stayin' Alive” by the Bee Gees; and as such, disco as a whole was a genre that I completely wrote off. Yet I have always been fond of the loosely tied and similarly maligned era of music which subsequently followed the Disco era, which is 80s New Wave and Synthpop. Even the cheesiest songs in the genre provide me with some sort of sonic pleasure. So it really shouldn’t have surprised me as much as it did that I actually quite enjoyed this effort from Sister Sledge. The title track remains a tad corny, yet still harbours feelings of optimism and unity, which makes it a rather comforting antique in today's world, where optimistic music seems almost extinct. Though my favourite song has to be “Lost in the Music”, which is just a simply beautiful song and represents disco at its highest that I’ve experienced so far. Definitely not an album I would have ever checked out willingly, but one that was a lot of fun and I’m glad to have heard. Best Songs: Lost in the Music, He’s the Greatest Dancer, We Are Family Worst Song: You’re a Friend to Me Score out of 10: 7
Not my cup of tea
Technically a great album, with really tight instrumental and vocal performances. But the songs on this record are more or less very generic disco tunes. A fine listen but not very memorable. Standout Tracks: Lost In Music, We Are Family
Some of y'all were convinced because of this album. Your parents were at the disco shaking their asses and met, then went home and boned to this album... I like the more slowed down tracks personally. The danceable stuff isn't bad but it's not me. I have no rhythm. The full on R&B tracks are good though. Good album.
So now I know where Will Smith nicked the beat for “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” from.
Ohh ok now I have context for ABBA The sisters have an amazing vocal harmony together, and the songs are all super catchy. The recording isn't the greatest (though that's probably due to the time period), and some of the songs could benefit from a radio edit.
It’s alright. Nothing groundbreaking or amazing. 3
Her voice is bonkers: raspy, high, and note-perfect. We Are Family is undeniably catchy and Thinking of You is quite fun and sweet.
Overall, a fun listen! But 'We Are Family' isn't anymore after listening to it at every bar and bat mitzvah I've ever been to...which is a shame!
Very groovy.
For this album having the iconic track We Are Family in its' short but fulfilling tracklist, my expectations were surprisingly a bit low, but after finishing this album I have to say I was thoroughly impressed with what Sister Sledge had to offer for the entirety of this 42 minute Disco project. This project will make you dance and this project will also make you stare up at the ceiling and reminisce on all the mistakes you ever made in your life, and yet make it all feel so fitting for each other. I will say this album does feel a bit long thanks in fact to You're a Friend to Me, but other than that track everything else here feels really well paced, it just sucks how much that one song ruins the overall momentum of this album. This is quite an interesting Disco album that really tries to be more thoughtful than a lot of the feel good music of the genre and time. Even with my slight disappointment of this album, I am still more than impressed with what Sister Sledge offered and I would totally recommend it to anyone else looking for a refreshing take on Disco back in the 70s.
I had high hopes for this after track 1, most of the rest of the album was just ok
It's disco, if you can look past some of that cheese, the music itself is a bop. Gets the toe tappin', the booty shakin', and hey, you end up recognizing all the hip hop songs that have sampled this record! All I need to know next is where is the snow?
Some really good songs, some great guitar and beats, but not a great album
Classic disco, not much more to say
Przyjemne, buja, ma w sobie mnóstwo energii. A jednak czegoś mi brakuje.
If it has to be disco, Sister Sledge ain't bad. 3/5
Pretty fun album. Too repetitive for me, but it has some fun basslines. I would like it more if the songs were shorter. Any of these songs work, but it's too much for me as an album. 2.5/5
It's not horrible, but very uneventful. We Are Family is obviously the banger on this album.
Just realized where Gettin Jiggy with it came from... Pleasant listen, We are family is iconic.
Pretty fun; it reminds of that “Chic” album. I’ve never really liked the song “We Are Family” - the only one I knew from this album - which I think just comes down to it being overplayed; here, in the context of album, I was able to enjoy it more. 3.5
Made me want to go to a Bat Mitzvah party!
Classic!
Slick production, but not for me.
I like me some disco, this was pretty good. Bass was great all throughout the album. 7/10 Favourite track: He's The Greatest Dancer
Solid disco record
R&b and disco. Classic
3.0 - Ok
Funky disco stuff, liker det ganske godt. 3/5
6 - AVERAGE
Disco is fun. I said what I said.
This one is a classic case of sky-high peaks surrounded by a whole lot of pretty forgettable scenery. When We Are Family kicks in, it’s obvious why the song became immortal. That bass line really is one of the greats: bouncy, confident, and just showy enough without slipping into the “look at me” trap that plagues plenty of disco-era players. It’s the sort of line that feels like it’s levitating the whole arrangement. He’s the Greatest Dancer keeps the magic going—a slick, stylish groove with enough personality to stand on its own. Between those two tracks, you get a great reminder of what the Chic/Nile Rodgers machine could do when it was firing. The rest of the album, though… it’s hard not to hear it as padded. The charm dips, the songwriting blurs together, and it ends up feeling like the singles are doing all the heavy lifting. There’s nothing offensively bad here, just a lot of material you forget as soon as it ends. In the end, it’s an album carried by two absolute killers surrounded by filler that keeps it squarely in “good, not great” territory. A solid 3—worth knowing, worth revisiting for the hits, but not something I can bump up in good conscience.
Enjoyed this album more than I expected. Songs are light, fun, and have good energy. I won't be listening to them outside of this, but enjoyed it still.
It was fine - I like disco and the title track is great, but the rest just feels kind of thrown together as a sub-part Chic album.
Nice funky album with a sprinkling of Nile Rodgers. Some classic songs and a nice easy listen. Nothing crazy about it for me but a solid album overall.
3.5
Well this was fine. I understand why this is on the list given the insane cultural impact of We Are Family and I always appreciate a sibling musical outfit. But I think at this point the hit is too ubiquitous to listen to objectively, and the rest of the album kind of fades into a disco haze.
This is a quintessential one hit wonder. The title track was everywhere in the late 70’s disco scene. Growing up in Pittsburgh, on a local level it was a whole other thing. The song became the rallying cry for the “City of Champions”, with the Pirates winning the World Series that year and the Steelers winning another Super Bowl to cap off the decade. Needless to say, I was on the receiving end of overplay for the title track at a whole different level. Reluctantly rounding up for the impact. 2.5/5
There’s nothing to overthink here. The music is sexy, seductive and simple in its message, and was written for one purpose: to have fun. And sure I definitely took to the roller rink floor when some of these songs came on. But outside of the way overplayed title track, the rest was pretty forgettable. Except for the guitar work of coursevbwhich is signature Nile Rodgers. So, I guess that really just makes this Chic, part 2.
Some decent struttin’ music, and some songs I could do without. This one definitely belongs in the disco time capsule, but all material from that particular capsule has a ratings cap for me.
Can really get into this genre but can’t deny those beats, bass lines and guitar will get that booty moving. I think the first track might be about me. Can’t listen to the title track anymore. 2.75
Lol, Nile Rodgers and his one riff. Definitive sound for the disco generation, but gets a bit old. Also...not a great sign when the most popular song on the album is an auto skip track. I've been to far too many weddings to hear that song again. I'm tempted to round down on this one, but I think it is good enough to get a mid-range rating. I am being nice and acknowledging the ubiquitous nature of Family...oof I dislike it, tho. 2.5/5
I have a hunch this experience is going to have me listening to far more disco then I would have listened to without it. I don't hate that, I've never been one to hate on disco and if the albums keep being as solid as this one I won't become a hater. A fun, groovy album that I would probably rate a 3.5/5 if I could, but one that is not good enough to get a 4 so its getting a 3.
One of the best disco albums, not my favourite genre, but amazingly well produced
A bit too funky for me to listen to regularly but great for good vibes while cooking in the kitchen.
Some serious classics on here and great grooves, but didn't dig the R&B slow jams so much.
We Are Family is a pretty decent album. It is a 70s disco album meaning that it has all the quirks that you would expect from the genre with the bass, drums and those other string instruments which i can't exactly make out what they are but I'm not sure they would change my opinion. Overall, I'd say that the album was pretty enjoyable. Each song had a rather nice groove to it but i will say that each song does get repetitive which is a staple when it comes to disco due to what it is typically used for. It still did make me wish some songs were a little bit shorter. Even so, this album was still an enjoyable listen and on par with a lot of the other disco albums i have heard. Best Song: We Are Family Worst Song: He's the Greatest Dancer
This is a relatively good album for a genre I’m not into. I don’t love the long disco tracks but it’s not *bad*
3.5 This is a great album, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would having going in only knowing the single (which honestly is not the best track on the album) - will dig into this a bit more, though not normally my vibe.
NILE RODGERS I LOVE YOU I WILL LISTEN TO ANYTHING YOU CREATE - non-disco tracks are skips
The dancey tracks hit and the ballads do not.
Makes you move instantly from the first notes. After the first track, things get a bit predictable. Still enjoyable. Also, the title track slaps.
Fun
Pretty classic disco, which is both over-hated and also just okay.
3 - decent funky album
Having no disco exposure, this made me realize that what I love about Random Access Memories is largely just Nile Rodgers, not some magic sound that Daft Punk created themselves. There are some bangers on here, Lost in Music being the highlight. We Are Family is still pretty played out though.
Solid, iconic, not blown away.
Pure funky disco. Nile Rodgers’ guitar tone influenced the world. Forever classics.
Perfectly passable soul music, but it does get a little tiring near the end. I'd rather listen to these songs individually rather than consecutively.
We are family
Upbeat, bouncy, classic disco.
Fun classics
3/5
The first song made it to my liked list and of course the family song was a classic pop song from just before my time, so I caught some trickledown.
Is it controversial to call Nile Rodgers a one trick pony? I’m going to. It is a fun trick though.
The title track is a classic, but disco / R&B still isn't my genre. Also, the 1995 remaster has some not great remixes at the end.
Meh
pretty good
Fine and fun
Cool album and stellar dance beats. Not to mention Nile Rodgers absolutely rocks this album. “We are Family” will always make me think of the Californian Raisins though.
This makes me wish I could give half stars
The woman on the front looks just like Abed from Community.
It's catchy, it's good but I can understand why the title song is the most famous.
fun lil disco album
Much nostalgia for when these were hits during the disco era. Apparently I only heard the dance remixes back then because the songs had a lot more complexity, strings, horns on the album than in my memory. Kinda like if the Supremes decided to put out a disco album.
Cool disco, un peu played out
Let's just get this out of the way. Countless use in commercials, television, weddings, Oldies stations, the world has stolen every bit of power that the title track had. I am more than past that song. So move away from that and you have here a solid album of disco. It's fun and enjoyable.
Don’t have much time to listen to them. There were a few bangers. I appreciate being able to notice the one single that popped off on some of these albums. But seemed like the standard disco fair for the most part. I’m sure someone fucks heavy with jt
Some songs are tooooooo long
Impressive vocals and groovy melodies. I really enjoy listening to this in the morning, although I admittedly skipped the title track. Heard it one too many times on the radio.
This album starts with really fun tracks, has some okay ones. I'm not sure and of these songs really shows off their true talents; the energy of the songs does a lot of the work.
I've certainly only heard the title track before now. I like the music disco inspired more than disco music itself, but there were lots of fun moments here.
I kind of liked this. Still disco but more straight ahead pop than CHIC. Not bad.
Definitely a catchy album. I enjoyed listening to it and recognized a few hits, but it’s just too repetitive and the lyrics could’ve used some work. They’re just too straightforward. 7/10 for me.
I don't mind this, although I didn't care for the DMC remix of We Are Family or either remix of Lost in Music. I think my favorite track was Lost in Music.
it’s fine, the guitar is funky, and i’ll likely never return to it.
While the title track is good and the melodies are smooth, there’s not much going on with this record. It’s cliche a little with its themes, not going deep into the whys and what’s of love and family, which just bored me a little. I didn’t hate it so 3/5
This is one of those that operates within the murky space of not outright disliking it, but not exactly liking it either. It just is. I did learn that Will Smith sampled "He's the Greatest Dancer" for "Gettin' Jiggy With It". That took me down memory road.
A couple of bangers
We Are Family is a disco record built on groove, polish, and undeniable charm. The title track is the obvious standout, one of those songs that never really leaves the cultural conversation, with its joyful chorus and Chic’s trademark production making it an instant classic. “He’s the Greatest Dancer” keeps that momentum going with another strong hook and plenty of dancefloor sparkle. The rest of the album, while enjoyable, does not always live up to the strength of those big hits. The production is slick and the performances are solid, but some tracks blur together and feel more like filler than standouts. Still, the warmth and energy the sisters bring to their vocals give even the lighter songs a lift. We Are Family works best as a snapshot of peak disco: fun, stylish, and carried by a couple of timeless anthems.
nothing worse than relistening to an album that i've already listened to and didn't care for !!!!
Although not my vibe, this album is beautifully recorded and packs several timeless hits. Sister Sledge has a unique style. Jump right in if you are looking for some dance-floor escapism.
I'm not a huge disco fan but was to have this pop up today. Was a very fun album for today.
Good disco/dance. I really liked lost in music!
Man, this took me way back to being a small kid and really starting to get into popular music. The intro chords to "He's The Greatest Dancer" sets the tone and take you back to the disco era. Corny ass lyrics, oh boy, hard to look past, but the baseline and groove are undeniable. 142M listens for "Greatest Dancer" and nearly 300M for the title track. Glue tracks like "Lost In Music" and "Thinking Of You" have over 70M and 90M, respectively. I kinda liked "One More Time" which I'd never heard before. With those listen counts, this is a way more popular album in this day and age than I would have ever imagined. The production stands out, this is a landscape of disco, not just a hit single with a good groove. The repetition of that landscape is the downfall for me, it's a lot of the same without much variation. It feels like it was all recorded on the same day with the same players. All disco ball momentum fell out the bottom with "Somebody Loves Me", why mess with a good thing to go with a schlocky bubblegum makeout song? Poor decision to wedge it in there. Overall, this is not a T1001 album for me, it's one dimensional, though it boasts 2 all time great disco hits. 3 stars.
Now I know where Will Smith borrowed his music from. Some of the remixes were fun too
Groovy. Great production
Some good bang tunes for you and your SO
Fun but short album, only 8 songs followed by 4 longer remixes. Few bangers then rest background fillers
disco funky girls that sang for chic, but here only some numbers i liked
Some great songs, this is the 70s album I remember: we need to fill out both sides of the album because 33s are profitable
Disco isn't really my thing but it's fine. 6/10
Solid album with banger "We are Family" 6.2/10
Really good fun. Enjoyed it too to bottom, but like most disco it's nothing mind blowing. Fav Track: Thinking of You 6.4/10
nice
1979 There's a time and a place for 70's disco, which is usually wedding receptions and village hall discos, both of which are likely to be full of drunk boomers. Right now I'm neither at a wedding reception or in a village hall, so this won't be getting aired tonight. However, that said, I've heard it before, so I'm confident in suggesting that I'd rather hear this than Adele. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ❌️ not in the mood Revisit ❌️ Of the time ★★★☆☆ (5/10)
This was a fun little disco album. Might pick it up again
Good album, but sounds like everything else nice Rodgers has been involved in.
This is my 10th album ive listened to. This is the first album where one of the songs ive heard played through my life and was wondering where it came from but this album isnt carried just by that song. I do like this album its nothing too special according to my ears but its still something i caught myself liking while listening. 82/100
A mixture of Soul, Disco, and R&B, which edge more towards Disco. I'm not really a fan of Disco tracks, even if heavily influenced by the legendary Nile Rodgers. Contains their hits "He's the Greatest Dancer", "Lost in Music", and, of course, "We Are Family".
- He´s the greatest dancer - 7.2 Sonido disco con su estilo sofisticado: bajo funky, guitarras limpias, cuerdas brillantes. - Easier to love - 7,5 - You are a friend to me - 7 - One more time - 6,7
An album that definitely belongs on this list, that has stood the test of time. Songs I still hear sampled to this day. Upbeat, dancy songs. Lovely voices. Fun album.
Two hits, repeated. Again.
Familiar with one song already. Not my thing but good enough vibe.
Very inoffensive but not as interesting as I was hoping. The title track is so funky and infectious though. I love Nile Rodgers
Not bad for a Dicsco album. 3 stars or C.
Not my style but there’s some classics there
Maturity is realizing that Disco does NOT suck.
Every song is great until it's about twenty percent too long. I suspect that's because this is dancehall music and there is a length they're going for but, for me, it smears the album somewhat.
It was some really cool and interesting instrumentation but it felt like every song just stalled out. I was hoping a lot more of these would go further than they did. Not a bad album but given some of its strengths in the production it felt like a bit of a missed opportunity.
Fun - infinitely sampled, and for good reason. A feel-good album. It is not a life-changer, but it is a bop.
Masterclass in bass. You’re a friend to me is without a doubt the highlight of this record.
I hope Will Smith paid them well for stealing their riff on "He's the Greatest Dancer", but I'm guessing they're doing ok from the royalties they get from every DJ that plays "We Are Family" at every fucking wedding in the world. Otherwise it's pretty good late era disco music. Clean beats and riffs. I'm just not that into disco.
The way she sings "Viarucci"... oohhh lord... gives me a tingle in places.. y'know?
Classic hits, some good ones in there. Some just were not my style of music.
Started off okay dance music, not my thing but it was fun. Lost in music was entertaining lyrics, hopefully I remember that one. We are family is catchy classic, even if I always roll my whenever it plays in a movie or tv show. All the love songs in between were kind of meh.
I'm game for disco. When it slides into the R&B side of things, I start to lose interest. He's the Greatest Dancer is fantastic.
Move ya ass guuuuurl
2,6/5
love the groovy dance vibe listened at the gym so i kinda disassociated boo
Funkadelic. I feel like I should have longer hair while listening to this. He’s the Greatest Dancer is a disco jam and Thinking of You has some good guitar chucky going on. Obviously We Are Family is a hit on this one too.
Buen Disco (oj oj oj). Le doy 3 estrellas sólo por gusto personal
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Välillä bängeriä ja välillä tylsiä biisejä.
Good. Not my cup of tea but objectively good.
Vibes That’s the best word to describe this album’s strengths When songs like We Are Family (which is understandably a mega hit) and He’s The Greatest Dancer are playing, all you want to do is dance, which is exactly what I wanted from this album Although I always love and respect being versatile, I wish the album leaned more into being upbeat and funky since I feel that could’ve taken it to even greater heights Favorites: We Are Family Honorable Mentions: He’s The Greatest Dancer
Definitely some classics on here. Bass lines are pretty awesome. Not necessarily my cup of tea but not a bad listen. Songs added to/on playlist: 0 3/5
Disco isn't really my thing but does still have an innate power to sometimes make your booty move without input from your brain.
good stuff, not really my style
